Grondar wrote:With Sharadin running late, Grondar takes a moment to greet Olivia. "Good to see you, Olivia. I was pleased to hear that you would be joining us. With both you and Lady Ivy in attendance, the undead infesting Fort Fletcher will have every reason to know fear."
"I am happy to be of service," Olivia will say. "While I have seen few adventures such as this, I am formidable against the undead we are likely to encounter. Afterwards, I will be content to run the Fort's infirmary and care for any wounded. I'll leave the adventuring to those who are more skilled in such things."
Fort Fletcher:
Shortly after arriving at Fort Fletcher, the group witnesses a strange scene. White, translucent figures appear out of nowhere and seem to replay the last moments of life of the previous defenders of the fort. One of them, a Priest of Heironeous, mentions something about defending the shield at all costs. The group believes this to be a reference to the Shield of Justice, one of four shields that comprise the Guardian Shield, a magical artifact that would create a safety zone around Ardelphia extending for forty miles.
Out of nowhere Lyonessa speaks up proclaiming that "The Shield of Justice lies beyond the Ether in Fort Fletcher". After a small discussion, the group begins to move out while the rest remain in Heironeous' Shrine.
Sir Acerion and Ivy lead the way out of the Shrine and into the hallway outside. Much like the doors to the shrine, those in the small hallway (area #411) that connects this section to the ballista platforms have been smashed open. A cold wind whistles down the passage from outside of the fortress.
It is possible to look through the hallway and out in the ballista area (area #408). Light from outside can be seen in the long area, suggesting that the doors leading out to the firing platforms are wide open. A coating of undisturbed snow covers the floor.
Sir Acerion and Ivy make their way up the hallway to the door to area #409. A light dusting of snow has been blown into the hallway and yours are the first tracks in it. There are patches of ice underneath the snow so going is slow.
The door to 409 remains on its hinges, but is partially open. The inside of the room is a mess. The rotting remains of wooden crates are scattered across the floor. Most look like they've been forced open many years ago. A few arrows, bolts, and spears can be found in the debris, but they are no longer in usable condition as the wooden shafts have rotted and the metal heads are rust covered. The room is otherwise empty.

Sir Corley and Olivia enter the hallway and turn south. They can see that access to the stairs leading to the upper level are open, but no light can be seen from up there. The door to area #412 is closed. Sir Corley grips the handle, but the door does not budge. The knight lowers his shoulder and the door bursts open and falls to the floor with a loud crash. The hinges had rusted shut with the passage of time.
The stone block that is used to bar the access hallway (#411) was cleverly made to look like part of the room itself. The room itself appears to have been used as an office. A thin layer of snow covers the floor by the door. Two desks are present, but they were smashed apart long ago and have rotted since. The room shows no sign of recent use.
Aria and Lyonessa follow Sir Acerion and Ivy up the hallway, but take the door to room #413. The door is slightly ajar and creaks ominously as Aria pushes it open. Beyond is a thirty-foot square chamber that appears to have been used as a place of relaxation. Several stuffed chairs and couches are here, along with three sets of regular wooden chairs and tables. The stuffing has been ripped out of the chairs and couches long ago and much of the remains litter the floor. The wooden chairs and tables have faired better, but show signs of decay. One of the tables has been flipped over and three chairs are lying on the floor.
Once everyone else is away, Sir Validar and Grondar move out. They take the lone remaining door in the area, room #410. This door has been bashed in and most of it lies on the floor. Half a dozen three inch wide arrow slits have been cut into the outer wall. A pile of snow has collected below the arrow slits, as all of them are wide open. There is a long bench along the walls by the door. Several wooden crates with open tops are strewn about the room. A couple of them still hold arrows, but the shafts have long since rotted. The remains of several smashed bows are also noted.
Looking out the arrow slits you see a disturbing sight. Several long ropes dangle from the ballista platforms. While most of these ropes rotted and broke long ago, a few still hold skeletons wearing rotting clothing. The skeletons are dangling by their ankles and sway slightly in the breeze. One of these swaying skeletons seems to be wearing bluish chainmail.
Back in the Shrine, the rest of the group examines the room. The only thing that remains in the shrine are the statues of Heironeous and the altar. The statues are mirror images of each other. Each depicts a tall, youthful man with coppery skin, auburn hair, and amber eyes. He wears blue-tinted chainmail and hefts a large battle-axe in one hand. His other hand holds what appears to be a silver lightning bolt. The battle-axes are held on the sides away from the altar, with the lightning bolts extending back and partially over the altar.
Apart from that, nothing of interest can be found in the Shrine. There does not appear to be any place for a shield to be have been stored or hung. None of the walls seem 'cleaner' than any of the others. Any of the debris on the floor has decomposed beyond the point of recognizing what it was.
Chareos wrote:Afterward Chareos wonders something, "If they are reliving the last moments of their lives, perhaps there is more to just protecting the shield. There may be more of a clue to the wounds that were inflicted on them." If the ghostly show continues Chareos will pay attention to the wounds that were inflicted to them and try to distinguish what sort of weapon could make such a wound.
The weapons seem to be slashing weapons that were thrusted forward. (Thin wound marks in width, but not long slashes.)
I somehow missed this during the last post.
Validar wrote:"What we were seeing must be from the fall of Fort Fletcher during the reign of King Victor the Fifth. It was when the humanoid invasion took many of the lands in this territory, including Ardelphia, about 50 years ago. Judging by the uniforms of the soldiers, that is most likely the time frame of this vision."
Victor the Sixth was the king at that time. He's the one who disappeared in the final battle against Keln at Shadowkeep.
Validar wrote:"Often there is a particularly powerful and charismatic humanoid who manages to unite the warring tribes and races and form a super army. Most agree that this enemy is the Witch-King of Vaasa who is well known for gathering humanoid hordes and sending them forth to lay waste. More info on the Witch-King can be found in the public reference section, specifically the Fellowship of Mages file and the Timeline. (And Clash of Empires #2 for those who want to be spoiled on things.)
Leaning on his staff he glances at eerie scene play out before him. It takes about three blows before he can make a rational opinion that the men were brought down by slashing weapons of some sort; the wounds inflicted are small, merely a few inches think but not wide at all.
Lost in thought he tries to distinguish what sort of weapon would cause these sort of wounds. “Spear more than likely,“ he says, “or a sword thrust.” This last thought comes to mind as he watches the last men dragged away.
Afterward he moves to the doorway in which Sherra and Arocken are standing, being ready to greet anything that may come to them.

While inspecting the temple out not a lot is found besides piles of decaying mass. Even with his gloved hands it is hard to pick them and move them around with his fingers, “What a waste,” he says grumply. “To think we could be out there helping them rather then be holed up here looking at the scenery.”
He then makes his way to the stone works statues noting their workmanship. “Very well made,” he notes to himself. “Looks like dwarves craftsmanship or someone equally skilled,” he says with a smile. He will see if any of the statues has moving parts perhaps hiding something valuable.
“I have studied about such things,” Ivy announces. “It is as Olivia said, they are trapped in this state until their task is completed. That means it is up to us to succeed where they failed, so that they can be released and sent to their proper place in the afterlife.”
"An admirable task then, and one to add to our growing list of duties here at this fort."
Lyonessa looks a bit sheepish at Validar's immediate questions. "I'm sorry, but that's all. I don't even know where what I said really came from," she'll say, obviously at a loss for answers.
"Fair enough," Validar responds. "We shall address this issue further when the time presents itself. For now, it is important that we keep our focus on our initial priorities: closing up this fortress and combating the undead that infest this place. Everything else is secondary."
Argent's words make some sense to Lyonessa, although clearly Argent is far superior in magical knowledge. "It could be shrouded or in a pocket dimension, similar to one we just used. Or it could be anchored to the ethereal plane in a spot accessible from the fort somewhere," she offers.
Yusef considers Lyonessa's statement for a moment. She seems uncertain what lead her to say what she did. "Perhaps I can be of assistance here," Yusef says, turning to Validar. "I have access to certain holy magics that allow interaction with the Etherial Plane. Once we have cleaned out this fortress, I can request those spells from Celestian search the local Ether for the Shield that you seek." There is futher discussion on this point, but Yusef has little to add.
"There seem to be many possibilities and we will have the chance to explore them all once we have secured this place. Gaining the Shield of Justice, if in truth it is still here, will be an extra bonus, most certainly."
"Once we are certain that this immediate area is clear, then, yes, the two of us can quickly scout the rest of this level while the others move across to the other temple."
"Let us not forget that there is one level above us. I believe it would be wise to clear it before beginning to work our way downwards. It was my thought that we could take care of that while the other three groups work through clearing this one."
"I am not as concerned with a thorough inspection of this place on our first pass. My intention is to complete our priorities first and the highest of those is to close this fortress up and deny the humanoids any possible passage through to Cynalon. The undead are only the second priority and anything we lock up inside with us can be dealt with more leisurely, if necessary. I want to get to the second level and close the gates and get the furnaces working as quickly as possible. Above us is simply the tops of the parapets and a few rooms. Even if there is something undead there, I do not suspect it will either be going anywhere or likely to catch us completely unawares with the anchor group in place."
The Guardians begin their search of the Temple area and do not find much there. The place appears to have been looted and what little remains is rusted and decaying. The fortress appears to have been open to the elements for over 50 years now and the severe weather has taken its toll on what it has touched.
"We will need workers to replace and repair much before this place will be ready to be properly inhabited again," Validar says as he examines the archery room. Peering out the arrow slits to examine the pass below, Validar sees a disturbing sight.
"It seems we have learned the fate of the priest's mortal remains at least, my dwarven friend," Validar will say, indicating the armored figure. "We will properly intern them once we have this place in our possession."
As no one has discovered anything of note, Validar moves the group further through the area. "Corley, you and Olivia take Farian and scout out the rooms above us very briefly. Arocken and Sherra will remain as a connection to you by stationing themselves on the top and bottom of the stairwell. Do not daudle there as we need to move down first, not up."
"The rest of the anchor group move into the Ballista Hall. Keep connection with those back in the Heironeous temple. We will be preparing to go down to the next level as soon as possible."
"The other two advance groups start checking out the doors to the ballista platforms and see if we can close them all up. Grondar and I are moving across to the other temple area. Does anyone sense any evil here, as yet?" Validar will lead the way across the Ballista area, keeping an eye to the open doors, but also focusing on the door before him to the Helm temple area.
Unhooking his Warhammer from his belt Farian makes himself ready for the run through of the upstairs. "‘Bout time!" he mutters to himself as he makes his way to the stairwell/ladder.
“Let’s make this quick, Lord Corley. I’m starting to get ice in me beard!” He will stay within eyesight of the others, opening doors as he can and peering inside. If clear he will move on to the next. If something living or undead is occupying the room he will yell, “We have company!!!!”

"Well, welcome to the Guardians of the Light for however short a time. I don't doubt that those coming later to defend the fort will be just as happy for your presence as I am."
Chareos wrote:“If they are coming from the Broken Lands and the Vassa, it would be a safe assumption that it could be the being known as the Witch-King behind all this.”
Grondar has heard this name before, and nothing good associated with it. Hopefully someday this Witch-King will be removed from his throne by those powerful enough to do so.

Grondar nods. "Fair enough. I think it's a risky strategy, but your call."
Validar and Grondar hit their room, and find it as empty as the others apparently find theirs. Unfortunately, an ugly sight greets them upon looking out through the arrow slits, and Grondar turns away from the grisly tableau.
Validar wrote:"It seems we have learned the fate of the priest's mortal remains at least, my dwarven friend," Validar will say, indicating the armored figure. "We will properly intern them once we have this place in our possession."
"Yes. They will be given the honor that they deserve," he says with a grim tone.
Validar gives out new orders and then the two of them are off, racing down the hallway toward the temple dedicated to Helm on the other end. Though not a dwarven god, Helm is the kind of god a dwarf can respect, and plays some of the same role in the human pantheon as Berronar does in the dwarven one.

Chareos wrote:“If they are coming from the Broken Lands and the Vassa, it would be a safe assumption that it could be the being known as the Witch-King behind all this.”
Yusef knows little of this Witch-King. He sounds like a terrible threat to everyone. No doubt they will learn more if it becomes important.
Validar wrote:"There seem to be many possibilities and we will have the chance to explore them all once we have secured this place. Gaining the Shield of Justice, if in truth it is still here, will be an extra bonus, most certainly."
"As you say," Yusef says with a nod. "We should have time later to deal with this and any other issues that arise."
Soon, the point teams are gone and the anchor team is left to search the room and guard it from intrusion. However, they find nothing of interest. The statues are beautifully make, as the dwarf Farian says, and Yusef stops to examine them closely. He runs a finger along one of the stylized lightning bolts, admiring the workmanship.
Eventually, they have little to do until further orders come from Sir Validar. Yusef will move to a convenient corner and serve up a prayer to Celestian, then wander over to Sherra. "So, what do you think? A nice temple for so small a fort. Are you warm enough?"

Argent listens as Sir Validar explains what the Guardian Shield is.
Sir Validar wrote:"The Guardian Shield is an artifact of Stone Ridge and Ardelphia. Unfortunately, it has yet to be put into use. However, it is of great power. Four individual shields make up the artifact and are held in statues in Ardelphia's central square. They would keep belligerent beings away for a distance of forty miles. Quite a powerful defense, you all must agree."
"The four Shields are each dedicated to one of the gods of Cynalon. Helm's Shield of Protection is safe in our hands in Corunglain. We are said to be close to Mystra's Shield of Magic. Perhaps it is in the Tower of Magic that Kharyna and her group are exploring. Heironeous' Shield of Justice is apparently still here somewhere. Perhaps the clerics managed to successfully hide it. And then there is Azrella's Shield of Life. Each are large stone shields emblazoned with the god's symbol on it. I was not told if they have individual powers besides operating as a whole."
“How interesting,” Argent remarks. “And as you say a powerful defense. It would effectively seal off this portion of the kingdom from the hordes from the Broken Lands.”
Sir Validar wrote:"Then perhaps they were successful in hiding it. Or perhaps some undead creature captured it and sequestered it away itself. We cannot be certain. Do any of the mages have the spell ability to look into the ether?"
“If the shield was that important, I’d have to think that they secreted it away until they could assemble the entire artifact. I doubt that it would just be lying about out in the open. There are various materials that will block magical detections. Stone and solid metals are just some of them. Likewise, I’m beginning to think that the shield is not on the Ethereal Plane either as it would also ‘just be lying about in the open’. In my opinion it’s concealed here in the Fort. Logically, close to this Shrine.”
When she has the opportunity, Argent will examine the altar closely. Being stone it would block magical detections and the shield could be inside it.
Lyonessa wrote:Argent's words make some sense to Lyonessa, although clearly Argent is far superior in magical knowledge. "It could be shrouded or in a pocket dimension, similar to one we just used. “A logical possibility,” Argent will agree.
Yusef wrote:Upon arrival at Fort Fletcher, it may be noticed by some that Yusef does not appear to be dressed for the weather. Other than his usual pants and shoes, he's wearing a sheepskin vest with the wool on the inside, but no shirt or jacket otherwise. Nevertheless, if he's bothered by the cold, he shows no sign of it.
“Must be nice,” Argent mutters to herself as she draws her fur coat about her and tries to keep from shivering.
Yusef wrote:Yusef considers Lyonessa's statement for a moment. She seems uncertain what lead her to say what she did. "Perhaps I can be of assistance here," Yusef says, turning to Validar. There is further discussion on this point, but Yusef has little to add.
“How interesting,” Argent speaks up. “I was unaware of such spells, but I suppose the Wandering God goes many different places. Should you attempt this, you’ll need to be aware of possible defenses that block ethereal access. Jallarzi taught me some of them. For instance her family’s estate is shielded against penetration by those on the ethereal or astral planes. I would surmise that such precautions were extended to important fortifications such as Fort Fletcher here.”
The Invoker nearly jumps out of her skin at the loud crash. “What was that!?”
Rushing to the doorway she sees Sir Corley had to make his own entrance and that was the cause of the noise.
“Careful, Sir Corley. You might wake the dead with that racket.”

The statues are beautifully made, as the dwarf Farian says, and Yusef stops to examine them closely. He runs a finger along one of the stylized lightning bolts, admiring the workmanship.
Argent stands before the altar and statues, contemplating what she sees before her.
“You know, I have the feeling that the clues to the Shield's location are right in front of us. It's just a matter figuring this riddle out.”
However, before any progress can be made, the call to move on is made and we begin to enter the ballista firing area. Argent will stay near the middle of the group as we move along.
Ivy tries to ignore the cold as she follows Sir Acerion out into the fortress.
“What I wouldn’t give for some warm tea,” she mutters.
Snow and ice are found on the ground and thankfully no tracks are present. The room we explore seems to have been an old armory, but everything has since rotted away.
“There is nothing here,” Ivy calls out to the others. “An old, abandoned armory.”
Leaving the room, we retrace our steps back to the entrance to the Shrine. Having a spare moment, Ivy will say to everyone, “I memorized spells that will help protect one of us against this cold. I would rather save them until they are absolutely needed, but they will help make this place bearable for a short time. Should anyone have need of such protection, please let me know.”
As we begin to cross the ballista area, Sir Validar asks if anyone has detected evil yet. “To make use of our detection abilities, we must stop and concentrate on the task. The range of the detection is also short, a mere 60’ feet and is blocked by thick stone such as these walls. The ability is helpful, but much depends on the circumstances when used.”
Sir Validar wrote:"Yes, unfortunately, she had to depart with the King earlier today. And it is indeed difficult to be apart from her charms. The very thought of her is nearly intoxicating. However, I must admit a bit of surprise at your comment. You always seemed to be enamored with several of the ladies we have encountered. Who, pray tell, is this special woman that has center stage in your heart?" Validar asks, quite curious at this unexpected revelation.
“Indeed, my friend, there has been many a young lady who has caught my fancy! A veritable feast of femininity surrounds us! But, alas, my thoughts always seem to drift back to the fair Lady Vera and her plight. To have her by my side… Well that, my friend, would be special.”
Sir Validar wrote:"Indeed you are correct. We need to establish a safe area as soon as possible and get some heat generated here. Each of our three main objectives seems to fight against each other, quite unfortunately."
“Seems to me that our own survival takes precedence. After all, if we succumb to this bone chilling cold then we’ll never complete any of our objectives. However, starting up the great furnace may not be our only option to secure warmth. Indeed, we do not even know if it still functions or not. The fort’s kitchen no doubt has a place where a fire could be built for warmth. At the very worst we can simply build camp fires where needed. It seems this place will be a worthy test for our skills and ingenuity.”
Sir Validar wrote:"However, the main furnace for the fortress is on the lowest level, and that is also where the gates are, so we should work out way down there as quickly as we are able."
“Agreed. And perhaps the undead said to dwell here will be drawn to us as well. The sooner they are dealt with, the sooner we can prepare for the orc hordes. Although, my friend, I cannot help but wonder if these poor souls who are trapped repeating their deaths are not the same undead said to inhabit this place. To the unknowing, they could be most frightening.”
Yusef wrote:"Sir Validar has spoken of plans to bring about change in Elcadan, and if anyone is capable of it, I suspect he is. Further, both he and the beautiful Sherra have promised to aid me in freeing my mother, which brings great joy to my heart. It seems that we are poised on the cusp of a time of great change, and it seems this group is destined to play a part in that change. I look forward to all that we may accomplish together."
“You can add my blade to this fine and noble cause, friend Yusef. It is our duty to stamp out evil where ever we may find it in the Kingdom, be it from without or within.”
Once inside Fort Fletcher, Lady Olivia and I go forth to explore. The door to the room we’ve been assigned to investigate seems to be stuck. The Knight shoulders it open and it unexpectedly falls to the ground with a tremendous crash.
Lady Argent wrote: The Invoker nearly jumps out of her skin at the loud crash. “What was that!?”

“Sorry,” Sir Corley calls out sheepishly. “My apologies, Lady Argent. Indeed, it seems that I’ve may have alerted the enemy to our presence. At the very least, the battle will soon begin, meaning that it would soon be over and we can secure our position here.”
Sir Validar wrote:As no one has discovered anything of note, Validar moves the group further through the area. "Corley, you and Olivia take Farian and scout out the rooms above us very briefly. “Haela’s Hairpins!” Aria curses at the surprising noise. “Why not alert every spook in the fort that we’re here? Then again, that might not be a bad idea! It least it would get the blood flowin’!”
Aria leads the way back to the others when her room turns out to be empty. She’ll keep moving back and forth on her feet trying to keep warm. When the time to move out comes, she heads across the ballista area with the others ready to smack down anything that gets in their way.
"Who, pray tell, is this special woman that has center stage in your heart?" Validar asks, quite curious at this unexpected revelation.
“Indeed, my friend, there has been many a young lady who has caught my fancy! A veritable feast of femininity surrounds us! But, alas, my thoughts always seem to drift back to the fair Lady Vera and her plight. To have her by my side… Well that, my friend, would be special.”
A smile comes to Sir Validar's face. "Truly a fine choice my friend. I would dare to say that I myself would be interested in the Lady Ardel and her ample charms were it not for Lady Gabriella."
Validar stands and claps the large knight on his shoulder. "I shall certainly prevail to assist you in your quest, just as you have assisted me in mine. But now I know why you so eagerly joined the quest to recover Stone Ridge. And here all along I thought it was our friendship that drew you in, my friend!" Validar chuckles at that last bit. "Now we know that it was the feminine influence of Lady Vera. An extremely admirable choice, Sir Corley. I am impressed."
"Often there is a particularly powerful and charismatic humanoid who manages to unite the warring tribes and races and form a super army. It is my contention that in most cases there is another force behind this warlord. The question is: who is this unknown enemy? For they are the true enemy."
“If they are coming from the Broken Lands and the Vassa, it would be a safe assumption that it could be the being known as the Witch-King behind all this.”
"That is very correct, my friend. The Witch-King has indeed been behind the humanoid invasions before. It is entirely possible that these recent attacks could be continued directives from that vile being. There are other possibilities as well. Until we learn more, we cannot be certain. Whoever it may be, I intend to take the battle to them. Likely the Witch-King has additional layers of intervention, puppets at his command, which control various parts of his empire."
"There are advantages and disadvantages to that. While they insulate him from direct conflict and any direct defeats, it also allows us to eliminate certain parts of the Witch-King's influence. Of course, since the conflict with Valen and Elena over 500 years ago, the Witch-King has not been heard from again. Neither directly nor from divinations. So if Vaasa is to blame, it may indeed be the Witch-King or it may simply be someone who has replaced him."
"In any case, Vaasa is a vile place to conquer and bring under control of Cynalon. It is a plan of mine, once we have our internal problems resolved. We will soon take the battle to our enemies rather than remain forever on the defensive."
"I am not as concerned with a thorough inspection of this place on our first pass. My intention is to complete our priorities first and the highest of those is to close this fortress up and deny the humanoids any possible passage through to Cynalon. Grondar nods. "Fair enough. I think it's a risky strategy, but your call."
"It may be more risky to us, but it is less risky to the overall mission, in my opinion. It is true that we could be attacked from within, but I am confident that anything here in this place, we can beat in direct conflict. The humanoids are the greatest threat to the kingdom. Anything here has likely been here for some time and is not going anywhere."
"It seems we have learned the fate of the priest's mortal remains at least, my dwarven friend," Validar will say, indicating the armored figure. "We will properly intern them once we have this place in our possession."
"Yes. They will be given the honor that they deserve," he says with a grim tone.
Validar nods silently and then turns back to the rest of the group. It is time to move on.
"There seem to be many possibilities and we will have the chance to explore them all once we have secured this place. Gaining the Shield of Justice, if in truth it is still here, will be an extra bonus, most certainly."
"As you say," Yusef says with a nod. "We should have time later to deal with this and any other issues that arise."
"Indeed. And we may learn other clues as we progress with reclaiming this place. I am fairly certain that there is more to this situation than we have seen as yet."
Argent listens as Sir Validar explains what the Guardian Shield is.
“How interesting,” Argent remarks. “And as you say a powerful defense. It would effectively seal off this portion of the kingdom from the hordes from the Broken Lands.”
"Indeed, as well as any other potential invasion threats. This portion of the Kingdom would become a power base for the region that could not easily be threatened and almost impossible to defeat."
"Then perhaps they were successful in hiding it.
"It depends. They may have had a defensive option that allowed it to be displayed as well. Something this important is also something that builds confidence in the troops and increases morale. It is much like the difference between a commander that leads from the front of his troops as opposed to one who leads from the rear. One has much more respect and inspires much more loyalty than the other."
"However, you may be correct about it being secreted in the Shrine. There could be a secret passage either magickal or mundane that leads into or under the altar or some other extra-dimensional space. It will be worth exploring when we has the opportunity."
"That would be an advantage to us then. Since it would likely mean that nothing has been able to disturb the Shield and ease our finding of it."
"That is good to note." Currently, Validar is comfortable enough in his armor and heavy, fur-lined cloak. The padding beneath the plates helps to insulate him from the brutal wind. "If anyone is feeling themselves succumb to the cold, let Ivy know."
"Yes, I understand some of the limitations of the ability from conversations with my old friend, Cereld. Those who have unlimited use of the ability should try to concentrate on such when we stop their group. It may help us to avoid a posisble ambush or at least to be prepared and organized against any possible foes. We may be moving too quickly for the ability to be used, but I would like you to try when possible."
"That is true. It would indeed be unfortunate if the furnace were no longer functioning. We shall know soon enough. I would imagine that some of the rooms have additional fireplaces as well as the main furnace. Failing that you are correct that we can build fires when needed. Hopefully once we get further inside the fort, it will be more insulated and warmer than these upper tower areas, open to the elements."
"However, the main furnace for the fortress is on the lowest level, and that is also where the gates are, so we should work out way down there as quickly as we are able."
Validar considers Corley's last statement. This place may very well be more a matter of using their brains and intelligence than brawn and skill at arms. Afterall the apparations they saw could be the undead that people claim have infested this place and there are no other dangers. While unlikely, it is a possibility. Still Validar is going to be ready for every eventuality. "If there are dangerous foes in this place, we may encounter them along our way, or they may avoid us. In either case, we will head down to the lower levels as quickly as we can. Then we can determine the level of undead infestation that exists."
"If there are not any other undead enemies, all the better for us. Your observation is quite possible."
As no one has discovered anything of note, Validar moves the group further through the area. "Corley, you and Olivia take Farian and scout out the rooms above us very briefly. Arocken and Sherra will remain as a connection to you by stationing themselves on the top and bottom of the stairwell. Do not dawdle there as we need to move down first, not up."
“As you command, Sir Validar!”, Sir Corley calls out. He takes a few steps and then turns back to face his friend. “Should we continue on over the parapet and meet you on the far side?”
"No," Validar responds simply. "We can just as easily explore that upper area from the stairs on that side. I want to avoid separating anyone too much until we know more about what's going on here."
"Once it is deemed safe, return back this way and meet up with the anchor group. We will proceed from there."
Following Aria, Lyonessa moves into the first room. There is nothing but broken furniture about. She does, however, nearly jump out of her chilled skin upon hearing the crash quickly followed by Aria's booming remark.
“Haela’s Hairpins!” Aria curses at the surprising noise. “Why not alert every spook in the fort that we’re here? Then again, that might not be a bad idea! It least it would get the blood flowin’!”
Lyonessa remains quiet, but looks about the room as she settles her nerves. She's not too sure what to make of her dwarven partner, but knows Aria will definitely be more than a match should they come across any foes.
"I too have taken spells to help with the elements," Lyonessa adds. "One such spell, called Everburning Log, will make any wooden fuel last hours longer than normal and provide substantial heat. It will be good once we're settled and we can stretch our wood supply to last much longer."
My voice, my will, my magic - three blessings bestowed by Mystra that spell your doom
Sherra smiles when Chareos joins her and Arocken as they stand watch. Nothing comes of it however as everything appears free of enemy activity. There is a bit of downtime as a few words and new plans are being exchanged. Sherra keeps a watchful eye out regardless.
Eventually, they have little to do until further orders come from Sir Validar. Yusef will move to a convenient corner and serve up a prayer to Celestian, then wander over to Sherra. "So, what do you think? A nice temple for so small a fort. Are you warm enough?"
"Sure, I suppose so," Sherra replies to the temple question. She hasn't been in enough of them to really tell, but at least this one appears to be in good shape given its history.
"Oh, I am comfortable enough, but thank you," she says to Yusef with a warm smile. "Time spent riding the ocean waves hardens one's resistance to the elements. Plus this full leather is pretty warm as well."
Sherra merely nods at the new orders and looks over to Arocken to make sure he is ready, although she suspects the elf will be. She will move up to the top of the stairwell as she doesn't know if Arocken can handle the cold as well as she.
Neither him nor Ivy find anything in the room. Anything of importance has been lost to the elements long ago and no beast makes its lair here.
“What I wouldn’t give for some warm tea,” she mutters.
Acerion smiles behind his helmet at her comment but says nothing. Truly a warm cup of anything would be good right about now.
No one else finds anything of importance and Validar splits everyone up again after some quick discussions. Acerion agrees at not spending any more time standing around than neccessary.
Ivy and Lyonessa comment about having spells that will protect against the cold. Acerion has a spell as well that can offer protection and will say so, "I too can provide protection against the cold. It sounds like we have enough such protections amongst us, and with Lyonessa's other spell, to endure the cold as needed."
"I have not detected anything as of yet, but will do so each time we stop and secure an area to make sure nothing is lurking around close by that our eyes may have missed," Acerion will reply.
Acerion will make his way with Ivy to the ballista platforms once we are ready again. Keeping his axe at the ready as always, he prepares to meet any foe should one be found in this frozen home.
Ivy first indicates that she has spells to help against the cold, should they be necessary.
"I too have taken spells to help with the elements," Lyonessa adds. "One such spell, called Everburning Log, will make any wooden fuel last hours longer than normal and provide substantial heat. It will be good once we're settled and we can stretch our wood supply to last much longer."
"That is good, as it can help all of us, rather than be directed at one person. Thank you for the information."
"Excellent. We seem to be well-protected against any cold concerns for the long term. Now we must get ourselevs to the lower levels to close the gates and light the furnace here."
"I have not detected anything as of yet, but will do so each time we stop and secure an area to make sure nothing is lurking around close by that our eyes may have missed," Acerion will reply.
"That would be ideal. We may not be facing as much as we originally expected and we could be facing more. I do not want to be caught unawares."
Arocken -
Arocken moves out with Sherra. She looks over at him expectantly and he answers with a wide grin, pulling his sword from its scabbard.
He allows Sherra to take the top of the stairs and he sets himself a few stairs from the bottom and crouches down, so as to be able to see the main group on the level and Sherra above him.
The dwarven priest listens in on the discussion of the magical shields, but has nothing to add as it is not his area of expertise. There is also some discussion of the Witch-King. It is interesting that Sir Validar already has some plans for removing him. Good.
Validar wrote:"It may be more risky to us, but it is less risky to the overall mission, in my opinion. It is true that we could be attacked from within, but I am confident that anything here in this place, we can beat in direct conflict. The humanoids are the greatest threat to the kingdom. Anything here has likely been here for some time and is not going anywhere."
"Like I said, it is your decision."
Soon enough, Grondar is busy with the exploration of the fort.
Gordon (fanchergw AKA Kylie, Grondar, Yusef, Lily Pak / Menagerie)
Corley wrote:“You can add my blade to this fine and noble cause, friend Yusef. It is our duty to stamp out evil where ever we may find it in the Kingdom, be it from without or within.”
"I am honored, Sir Corley. No doubt with your assistance the chance of freeing my mother increases greatly. Thank you."
Argent wrote:“Must be nice,” Argent mutters to herself as she draws her fur coat about her and tries to keep from shivering.
Argent gives him a strange look, but Yusef cannot make out her words, so he ignores it. Clearly, it wasn't something she needed him to hear.
Argent wrote:“How interesting,” Argent speaks up. “I was unaware of such spells, but I suppose the Wandering God goes many different places. "Yes, Celestian is the Great Traveller. No place is barred to him. And I have some knowledge of means of blocking extradimensional access, and even am able to wield such spells myself. I don't know if such defenses are present here, but it may be wise to prepare to use them ourselves if we decide to do some Etherial exploration."
Lyonessa wrote:"I too have taken spells to help with the elements," Lyonessa adds. "One such spell, called Everburning Log, will make any wooden fuel last hours longer than normal and provide substantial heat. It will be good once we're settled and we can stretch our wood supply to last much longer."
"That is a miracle that Celestian blesses his priests with as well, though it is not one I have chosen for today. I will be sure to rectify that oversight tomorrow."
Sherra wrote:"Oh, I am comfortable enough, but thank you," she says to Yusef with a warm smile. "Time spent riding the ocean waves hardens one's resistance to the elements. Plus this full leather is pretty warm as well."
"That is good to hear, Sherra. I would love to hear more of your days at sea. Perhaps you will favor me with a story when we have the chance to relax?" The beautiful scout gets an assignment from Validar and moves to take up her position, leaving Yusef to ponder the riddle of the shield and the shrine.
Argent wrote:“If the shield was that important, I’d have to think that they secreted it away until they could assemble the entire artifact. I doubt that it would just be lying about out in the open. “You know, I have the feeling that the clues to the Shield's location are right in front of us. It's just a matter figuring this riddle out.”
Argent's comments float around in Yusef's head as he examines the shrine. Since the others are off clearing the way, there is little else to do, so Yusef focusses on the mystery at hand. Since the lightning bolts have drawn his attention, he starts with them. Yusef sights along each bolt as though they were arrows, both forward and backward, trying to determine if they point anywhere in particular. He attempts to determine if the lines of sight in either direction converge, either within the room or beyond.
Gordon (fanchergw AKA Kylie, Grondar, Yusef, Lily Pak / Menagerie)
The exploration of Fort Fletcher continues. In the Shrine of Heironeous, the anchor group examines the altar and the statues. Argent examines the altar itself. It seems to be constructed out of one solid piece of stone. There are no openings or concealed compartments that she can detect.
Yusef concentrates more on the bolts of lightning in the hands of the statues. The bolts are on the sides of the statues next to the altar, so the statues are essentially mirror images of each other. The bolt rises up in the back and passes over the altar.
Projecting each bolt forward they go off in separate directions towards the opposite walls of the shrine. However, projecting their paths backwards does reveal something interesting. The bolts seem to target a single point on the wall, about eight feet above the floor behind the altar. Looking at that point, there seems to be a tiny opening in the wall. Looking closer, the opening appears to be what you'd guess to be the end of a 1-inch wide pipe. The pipe is hollow and extends through the wall into darkness.
With the initial exploration not turning up anything of interest, Sir Validar moves the group on. Sir Corley is instructed to take Olivia and Farian and go explore the rooms above this section of the fortress. Sherra and Arocken take up positions on the stairs.
Farian leads the way up the dark stairs. No light comes down from above, so a light source is required. The steps go up to a landing and then continue back in the same direction to the top floor. The source of the lack of light is quickly apparent. The defensive block as been put into place here effectively sealing off most of this area. Only access to room #513 is allowed.
That chamber has a ladder attached to the wall that leads up into the observation tower. This chamber is dryer than the ones below. The stone floor is only covered by dust and dirt and there is no trace of snow here. The chamber appears to have been used as a relaxation area and minor armory. Cases of arrows are here and they appear to be in good shape for the most part. Many can be salvaged. There is no sign of anyone or thing being here for a long time.
Farian explores up the ladder and emerges in an observation platform 30' overhead. A wooden hatch allows access to the tower top and had to be moved aside to gain entrance. From the tower, Farian has an excellent view of the surrounding area. This vantage point puts him 180' above the ground.
No beings are seen in the surrounding area. The wind is quite cold and there is a light snow falling. There are signs of birds having used the observation tower as nests in the past, but none are here right now. The open areas of the fortress (areas #501, 507, & 508) are covered with snow. The door to the area on the far side is swinging back and forth in the breeze, but nothing can be seen inside there. Farian returns to the others below. The group safely rejoins the others.
By now, the others have moved into the Ballista Hall. The doors that let the ballista platforms out are all open. A few are held open by ropes that were attached to them and then tossed over the edge. Some of those ropes still have bodies attached to them and these ropes appear to be taunt. Three of the five sets of doors are still intact, just open. One set appears to have been bashed in from outside and little remains of the last, save for traces of fire damage.
Snow blown in from the openings covers the floor in spots. There are at least nine of the mobile ballista platforms in sight. None are out on the firing platforms and some appear to have been pushed back into the hall from the outside. A couple sits against the south wall with their weapons broken. The others appear to have seen combat and have taken damage and show signs of exposure to the weather. All the metal portions of the ballistae are coated with rust.
Sir Validar and Grondar reach the far side of the hall without incident. The passageway leading to the helm temple is sealed off. The defensive block has been put into place. From the looks of it tools have been used to try and breach the stone block, but it remains in one piece. None of this work is recent.
The only remaining ways out of this area are the twin pairs of stairs that lead down into darkness. No traces of evil or undead have been detected thus far.
Suddenly, there is a flash of white light and the ballista hall is swarming with dozens of translucent figures! A phantasmal battle erupts among the group as transparent figures come into existence battling foes that cannot be seen.
At first the combat is centered on the platform openings as the ghostly warriors man their ballista positions. Suddenly, the men operating one of the platforms appear to be locked in close quarters combat against unseen foes. Then, an unseen force violently shoves the ballista platform backwards and across the chamber.
More hand-to-hand combat erupts as the unseen enemy breaches the hallway. The struggle is fierce and violent and it becomes clear what the final outcome will be. The defenders are vastly outnumbered and swarmed over. Translucent figures drop and merge with the snowy floor.
Behind you, the stone block leading to the Helm Shrine is moved into place sealing off that area. The enemy moves into the Heironeous side of this level before their block can be moved. The hallway doors are bashed open and the ones beyond soon follow.
The last moments of the scene you saw earlier are played out as the temple itself is breached and the final defenders are defeated. Then as suddenly as it started, the phantasmal replay ends and all is quiet once more.
GM Notes:
The maps have been updated in the private section.
The exploration does not get much further here on this level. Several of the ballistas are in the hall and damaged and most should signs of battle use.
"Apparently, the attackers may have come in this way as well as from below," Sir Validar comments looking at the scene. "It is not likely that the defenders would have pulled the ballista platforms back on their own, while the battle still raged."
Grondar and Validar do not have far to go before they are halted. The defensive stone block is in place. "It seems we have little choice but to proceed down from here for the moment. That is our preference anyway."
As Validar turns back to the main anchor group, he sees another ghostly play erupt into being.
Suddenly, there is a flash of white light and the ballista hall is swarming with dozens of translucent figures! A phantasmal battle erupts among the group as transparent figures come into existence battling foes that cannot be seen.
Sir Validar watches closely as the battle is played out. Soon they see the ghostly defenders pushed back by their unseen enemies and the group is quickly slaughtered. Helm's Temple is blocked off and the Heironeous side is breached, which likley leads a repeat performance of the scene they originally saw.
By the time that has finished, the others who went to explore above the Heironeous Temple have returned as well. Part of that area is closed off as well.
"We will explore the upper areas soon enough, as it appears that is where the defenders made their last stand. However, we must move down for now," Validar will tell everyone.
"The main anchor group will continue to hold this area. I want those intact doors closed up and barred and we might as well bring in the dead bodies while we have the moment," Validar directs. "It will keep some of this horrid cold at bay as well."
"Acerion and Ivy will lead the way down that stairwell," he adds indicating the one closest to Helm's Shrine. "Corley and Olivia will lead down the other. Myself and Grondar will follow Corley and Aria and Lyonessa will follow Acerion."
"Once the doors are secured here, we will move the anchor group down to the next level with archers covering the stairs behind us. Everyone will move down those stairs," he says, again indicating the stairwell closest to the Helm Temple.
"There is a large open area below us which was the archery range and combat practice area, as well as the lifts to the lower levels. W will sceure this area, with each group fanning out to check one quadrant. Once the anchor group comes down, we will proceed to hold this area. Two of the advance groups are to watch the stairs further down. We will have numerous avenues of approach on this level. From there the other two groups will first explore the Boiler Room."
"Alright everyone, let's continue to keep our eyes and ears open and stay in eyesight of at least one other group at all times."
Taking the lead up the stairs Farian looks up the stairway. Even with his infravision he can see very little as the cold has worked against him. Taking a torch and igniting it he steps forward with the torch slightly behind so as to not blind him completely.
Reaching the top of the stairs the lack of light becomes apparent, as the stone block is set in place. “Least it's dryer here,“ he mutters as he notes the dust and dirt about the crates. Passing the torch about the room he notes the ladder. “Looks to me there is only one route to go,” he says while indicating the ladder against the wall. “Shall we have a look around?” he asks Corley.
Passing the torch to Olivia, “I'll be back in a moment.” He then put his war hammer in his mouth and ascends the ladder. He is met by a hatch that he has to strain against as snow falls down upon him. "By Heaven that is cold!!” he exclaims as the hatch gives way and sunlight spills through.
Raising up through the hatch Farian notices the snow, which comes about his knees and the beautiful sight beyond. So many mountains reach his view. No wonder his people dwelled here.
He trudges through the snow to the broken valley side, the best that he can tell no force is within view. A site that he is thankful for the moment. A creek in the wind catches his ear and he spins with hammer in hand to see what it is. Quit being Paranoid. He tells himself as he sees the inside of the room is empty.
With the wind and cold biting at his bones he returns to the hatch and says to his waiting comrades, “Nothing that I can see.” He then adds, “Let’s join the others,” while taking the torch back from Olivia.
Meeting up with the Anchor group and Validar, Farian reports what he saw, “From what I can tell there is about a foot of snow on the observation towers. With any luck any advancing group may be slowed by such foul weather. From the observation deck I saw no forces moving this way.”
For the second time a spooky scene erupts about them: the defenders were thrown back and slaughtered to melt into the snow. He slowly comes around and says to Grondar quite gruffly, “Perhaps, I was mistaken about honoring the gods; I do not wish this to be my fate.”
Hearing Validar's orders Farian moves forward to Acerion and Ivy. “If the defensive stones are down, light will be limited. You may need this for even I had trouble seeing.” He hands them the lit torch.
Racing across the Hall of Ballistas with Validar, Grondar is brought up short by an obstruction. The short hall leading to the temple of Helm has been blocked with the defensive stone block. "Looks like we'll be going the long way to reach the temple, Validar," Grondar says over his shoulder to the big knight.
Validar wrote:Grondar and Validar do not have far to go before they are halted. The defensive stone block is in place. "It seems we have little choice but to proceed down from here for the moment. That is our preference anyway."
"Time to collect the others?"
As he turns back towards Hieroneous' Temple, yet another silent, ghostly play unfolds before them. It appears that the enemy gained access through one of the ballista ports, but what could have shoved the huge machine back so violently? Clearly, there was some powerful force on attackers' side.
Farian wrote:For the second time a spooky scene erupts about them, the defenders were thrown back and slaughter to melt into the snow. He slowly comes around and says to Grondar quite gruffly, “Perhaps, I was mistaken about honoring the gods, I do not wish this to be my fate.”
A wrinkled smile crosses Grondar's face. "The gods give so much and ask so little in return; I believe there is wisdom in honoring them. Think about it. You are always welcome any time to join me in devotions to those who made and provide for us; and you may even find it a pleasant experience."
Validar wrote:"The main anchor group will continue to hold this area. I want those intact doors closed up and barred and we might as well bring in the dead bodies while we have the moment," Validar directs. "It will keep some of this horrid cold at bay as well."
Grondar nods in approval as Validar orders the hanging bodies brought in. To have been treated so; no decent person deserves such dishonor in death.
Following Validar's orders, Grondar moves over to join Corley and Olivia in preparing to descend to the 3rd level. From what he saw of the maps, they will have to be very careful; there are many rooms and many approaches on that level, which means they could be attacked at any time from almost any direction.
Gordon (fanchergw AKA Kylie, Grondar, Yusef, Lily Pak / Menagerie)
After several minutes of looking, Yusef's examination of the lightning bolts on the twin statues seems to pay off. The back end of each lightning bolt appears to point to the same spot on the wall. Moving over to the wall and looking up, he spots a small hole in the wall. It looks like there is a small, hollow pipe or tube leading into the wall. Unfortunately, the hole is rather high up on the wall.
Needing something to stand on to examine the hole, Yusef goes into the other room and fetches one of the crates of supplies. Returning to the shrine, he places it on the floor in front of the hole. "I think I found something," he says to those still remaining in the room. "There appears to be a hole in the wall here that the lightning bolts are pointing to." Climbing up on the box, Yusef pulls one of the throwing spikes from the pouch at his waist. Holding one end, he gently inserts the other end into the pipe, trying to ascertain more accurately which direction the pipe seems to be pointing. It might be helpful to know if it leads to another room or level of the keep.
Seeing the warrior-mage Chareos in the room, Yusef gestures at the statues. "Can you give me a hand, Lord Chareos? An idea occurred to me and I would like some help to check it out. See the spears the statues are holding, could you check to see if either of them can be moved in any way or taken out of the hand holding it?" If, by chance, either of the spears can be moved, Yusef will see if it can be inserted in the hole either point-first or backwards.
Working in the temple, Yusef is unaware of the shadow-play that is going on in the Ballista Hall. The part that occurs in this room reoccurs, but he ignores it as he's intent on exploring the hole in the wall.
Eventually, Sir Validar and the others return and everyone is gathered together in the hall with the ballistas. Yusef informs their leader of what he's found so far, then listens as orders are issued once more. Hearing of the bodies hanging out the windows, Yusef volunteers to help bring them in. That is no way to treat the dead.

As he awaits the others return Yusef’s voice calls to him, "I think I found something," he says to those still remaining in the room.
Turning and seeing the Priest standing on a wooden crate Chareos says, “I would not stand on that too long Yusef. The wood might be worn and crack at anytime.”
“What do you require?” the young mage asks. “ I can try but with my enhanced strength I would not wish to desecrate Heironeous’ statue.” Setting his staff against the wall, he will see if one of the spears moves without ripping the statue's arms off.
Seeing Yusef insert a pike of some sort into the hole a thought comes to Chareos. “What if it was meant to show the way?” Seeing the confused look on the priest he adds. “We aren't sure just how far back that hole goes. Say if the sun, at a given point in the day, lit the hole in the wall from the other side causing it to spill out the other end marking something on the floor or opposite wall that is only able to be seen at that time?” Gauging Yusef’s reaction he will then say, “It would be a very clever way to hide something.”
Later on when we are all gathered Validar issues orders to bring the dead bodies in. Chareos volunteers for this with his enhanced strength. “I just hope the ropes aren’t close to being worn through. I would not wish to see their remains shatter on the valley floor.”
Chareos would have missed the spectral show as he was in the shrine with Yusef.

Yusef looks down for a moment, then back at Chareos. "It survived the trip here with us from Corunglain, hopefully it will hold up a little longer. Besides, this shouldn't take too long."

"No, I certainly don't want you to damage the statues. If it was designed to move, it should do so fairly easily. I'm mostly trying to determine if this hole and one of those spears might form some kind of magical lock-and-key arrangement."

As Yusef is talking, Chareos can see that the throwing spike Yusef is holding appears to be about eight to nine inches long, perhaps half an inch in diameter, and sharply pointed on one end. "That's why I'm using this throwing spike. I'm trying to determine which direction the hole is pointing and get some idea of it's depth."
The remark about the sun coming through the hole surprises Yusef. "I hadn't thought of that." Turning, he looks into the hole to see if there is any light coming through from the other end.
Gordon (fanchergw AKA Kylie, Grondar, Yusef, Lily Pak / Menagerie)
Suddenly, there is a flash of white light and the ballista hall is swarming with dozens of translucent figures! A phantasmal battle erupts among the group as transparent figures come into existence battling foes that cannot be seen.
Shocked by the sudden appearance of another ghostly scene unfolding admist them, Lyonessa watches intently as soon as she recovers. Being who she is, the history of the final hours of this place is unfolding before her and she means to commit it to memory. It may not find its way into one of her ballads, but she will scribe all she has seen so a history exists for others to know.
"The main anchor group will continue to hold this area. I want those intact doors closed up and barred and we might as well bring in the dead bodies while we have the moment," Validar directs. "It will keep some of this horrid cold at bay as well."
It weighs heavy on Lyonessa's heart that people were left on display in such a horrible fashion. Surely it hasn't helped to put the ghosts to rest here. She hopes that they can succeed and let these restless spirits know peace.
"Acerion and Ivy will lead the way down that stairwell," he adds indicating the one closest to Helm's Shrine. "Corley and Olivia will lead down the other. Myself and Grondar will follow Corley and Aria and Lyonessa will follow Acerion."
Lyonessa isn't sure how her dwarven partner is going to take having to follow Sir Acerion and Lady Ivy, figuring that Aria would prefer it if the roles were reversed and she was in the lead.

Yusef wrote:"Yes, Celestian is the Great Traveler. No place is barred to him. And I have some knowledge of means of blocking extradimensional access, and even am able to wield such spells myself. I don't know if such defenses are present here, but it may be wise to prepare to use them ourselves if we decide to do some Ethereal exploration."
"I think that you might have misunderstood me, Yusef," Argent states. "I'm not speaking about spells that block ethereal travel, but rather what you might consider to be a magical side effect. As I stated, Jallarzi mentioned that her estate was protected against penetration by ethereal, even astral, beings. That's because when it was built gorgon's blood was added to the mortar. By doing this, walls built this way block those on the ethereal and astral planes. This is not a magical effect that can be dispelled. It is quite possible this fortress was also built with this type of protection. That was all I was suggesting."
Argent watches with interest as Yusef finds something on the wall. It seems that the lightning bolts that the statues hold point to what appears to be a small hole in the wall. She listens in silent contemplation as he and Chareos examine it.
"Does anyone remember if the maps showed any chambers behind this wall," Argent asks. Having not attended the planning sessions, she's not that familiar with the Fort's lay out. "Or maybe this arrangement is like a lock. We just need to figure out the right key to open it."
"If I had a Wraithform spell in memory, I could attempt to see where that hole leads to. Perhaps there is another chamber at the far end? That could be where the shield is secreted. Maybe there are other treasures there as well."
The call to move comes before we can finish here and we move deeper in the fortress. Argent stays near the middle of the group for protection.
All of a sudden, the ghostly play starts once more but this time on a much grander scale! It seems that dozens of defenders are involved in this event. It does make Argent wonder if this is indeed the source of the undead infestation here. Seeing this ghostly apparitions battling and dying endlessly could lead one to that conclusion.
Once the play has ended, it becomes clear that we'll be descending down the dark steps. As usually, Argent will stay near the middle of the group as we go down.
With the initial exploration not turning up anything of interest, Sir Validar moves the group on. Sir Corley is instructed to take Olivia and Farian and go explore the rooms above this section of the fortress. Sherra and Arocken take up positions on the stairs.
Sherra remains alert, but it is evident soon enough that there is nothing above either. Sherra heads back downstairs, taking a quick note of everyone's location. She hears Yusef and Chareos discussing something, but soon another ghostly scene appears in their midst.
Watching it play out, this time longer and incorporating the first scene they had witnessed, Sherra can't help but wonder if these were the "undead" rumored to be here. If so, their only concern will be to secure the fort before the humanoids arrive.
Sherra gets ready to head downstairs. As always she will be alert and keep a watchful eye over all she can see.
Once again, nothing is found by any of the groups. Acerion secures his axe for a moment as we wait for the others to rejoin. Suddenly the ghosts spring to live once more, acting out their final moments against a still-unknown enemy.
Acerion pays more attention, seeing if the defenders faced opponents their height or not. Blows would normally be swung at an enemy's body or head. Therefore if the defenders are attacking in a strained fashion, either higher or lower, it might give some clue as to who they were fighting, or at least rule out who they weren't.
"Acerion and Ivy will lead the way down that stairwell," he adds indicating the one closest to Helm's Shrine. "Corley and Olivia will lead down the other. Myself and Grondar will follow Corley and Aria and Lyonessa will follow Acerion."
"Understood," Acerion says simply. He looks first to Ivy, then to Aria and Lyonessa to see if all are ready. Then, Farian approaches them.
Hearing Validar's orders Farian moves forward to Acerion and Ivy. “If the defensive stones are down, light will be limited. You may need this for even I had trouble seeing.” He hands them the lit torch.
"Of course," Acerion replies, taking the torch after re-arming himself with his battle axe. "Thank you."

"Actually, I think I understood that, mostly," Yusef replies. "I just figured that we wouldn't know one way or the other whether that was true until we were in a position to attempt our ethereal searching - should it even prove necessary. However, if it does prove necessary, then I accept that if such defenses exist, then it will likely limit what we can do. On the other hand, if those kind of defenses are not present, I was suggesting that we should be prepared to protect ourselves with spells of a similar nature while we conduct our search. Does that make sense?" Not being a mage, he's feeling a little out of his depth here.

"Somewhat," Yusef admits. "However, I'm having some trouble orienting myself sufficiently to be certain what should be in that direction. As for your mention of the lock, that's exactly what I'm trying to figure out here with Chareos's help."
Argent wrote:"If I had a Wraithform spell in memory, I could attempt to see where that hole leads to. Perhaps there is another chamber at the far end? That could be where the shield is secreted. Maybe there are other treasures there as well."
Yusef smiles at Argent's obvious interest in finding treasures. "Well, tomorrow would certainly be soon enough for that, and I'm sure you can arrange to have the spell available for then."
=========================================== In truth, I am uncertain which wall the hole is in. Could you mark it on the map for us?

“From What I recall of the maps and description of the terrian, this fort blocks the pass to the broken lands. Some of the fort was built into the rock face anchoring it,” he adds recalling his memory. “I don’t recall anything here that was in the original plans though, or perhaps it was left out for a reason.”
“There shouldn’t be a need to wait until tommorrow, Yusef. Ever since the battle at Coruglain I have made it a habit of keeping a Wraithfrom spell within memory or my Ioun stone. My only fear would be not being able to navigate the hole and return safely, before the spell's limits were reached…,” he trails off at the thought of becoming solid in a hole a fraction of his size. He lets out a shudder at the very thought!!!
