New Frontiers #66

Pre-Departure:

Sir Validar/Lady Gabriella:

Sir Validar wrote:Validar will accept the ribbon and lift it to take in the aroma of Gabriella's perfume. "I will keep this with me at all times, my lady. In truth, I will need no reminding of you, as you will certainly be on my mind each night. Regardless, I thank you for this token of yours."
"I can only hope that you are indeed correct that we will see each other again sooner than expected. That thought will make the time apart much easier." Validar leans in and kisses his beautiful companion briefly. "That and the expectation of another kiss from your beautiful lips."

"That's a very sweet thing for you to say. Yes, the days to follow are going to be long ones, but we will be together again."

Sir Validar wrote:"You are correct, my lady. Anything involving Elcadan is of great interest to me. I am not surprised that Elcadan is somewhat lacking in their support. They are self-interested and self-serving. I wish you luck in changing their attitudes." Validar starts to say more, but catches himself. This is a time to enjoy their fleeting time together, not rail on about the evil that encompasses Elcadan.

"I fear that my chances of success are limited. I've never even met the Duke of Elcadan before. Of course, I didn't have the King with me at that time either. I am sure that the Duke will see him."

Sir Validar wrote:"That is most considerate of you. I will prepare a message to my parents to inform them of what has been happening with me since I departed. I would also like to leave word with my old allies the Seekers that I do not seem to be able to return to them anytime soon, and to Lady Vera that we will soon be moving to free Ardelphia and Stone Ridge."

I know how difficult it can be to be away from loved ones during these trying times. Perhaps I will have responses for you and that will force me to seek out again.
"

Sir Validar wrote:"Be safe on your travels, my lady. I eagerly await our next encounter."

"Be safe yourself, Sir Validar. You're bound to see much more danger than I."

More obvious retcons involved. See A Heart Divided.

The King and the Knights 3:

Sir Validar wrote:"In truth, my liege, I have given much thought to plans for myself in the future. At the same time it is difficult to say for certain what opportunities will present themselves, as the Kingdom seems to be in very changing times. I believe I would be a just ruler over as much territory as you would deem appropriate. I will stand in the defense of Cynalon to my dying day. I have been bred for battle and strength of arms and for leading my men and my citizens in war and also in peace."

"I also would have some interest in helping to develop stronger ties with the Zakharian people and bring our Kingdoms closer together. I will do my best with all my strength and all my will to perform the tasks that you require of me, my King."
"It is as you say, Sir Validar. What opportunities may come in the future cannot be seen in the here and now. It is my intention to reward those who serve me and the kingdom during my rule. You are already destined to rule when your father decides to relinquish control of Pyris. We shall see if something else comes along between now and then."

Sir Acerion wrote:After Validar, Acerion will reply, "I too have given much thought on possible future plans, my king. It is my goal to reclaim the lands that my family and our people were driven from. It would honor me greatly if you deemed it worthy of me to help restore rulership and peace to those lands, and fortify them against all of our enemies, once we have cleansed them of the foul taint they are currently under. It will always be an honor to take the field for you in whatever manner my services are needed, but to one day rule over the lands of my birth would be a great appointment to have achieved."
"That is a noble goal to strive for, Sir Acerion, and one that I fully support. The recovery of Stone Ridge and the re-opening of the mines in that area will be a boon to the Kingdom. The proper ruler of the Barony of Stone Ridge remains in the Ardel family line. Hopefully the Lady Ardel will find a strong man to serve as the Baron of Stone Ridge. As such, I cannot promise you what rightfully belongs to another. But much can happen between now and when Stone Ridge is restored. I promise that your efforts will not be forgotten."

Sir Corley wrote:After his fellow knights have given their thoughts, Sir Corley speaks. "Alas, unlike my comrades, I fear that I haven't given much though as to the course of my future. I am not sure if rulership is for me, but I do know that I will serve in whatever capacity you desire, my king."
“At least you are honest, Sir Corley. I admire that in a man. I think that your future is a promising one.”

Speaking to you all, the King will close saying, “Good fortune to you on your mission at Fort Fletcher. I am sure that your reports will be ones of success. Until we meet again.”

Goodbye to Corunglain:

The rest of the last day in Corunglain proceeds smoothly enough. The gathering is held and Sir Acerion announces his engagement to Lady Ivy.

The morning comes too soon for some and the final preparations are made. The group’s mounts are gathered together for the trip to Fort Fletcher. Aria shows up bearing 15 kegs of ale, as she noted that it was not on the supplies list. The Priestess Olivia is there as well. She carries a mace and wears a backpack. Lord Sharadin finally does arrive about an hour late.

The Archmage places what at first glance appears to be a simple 6” stone cube on the ground. A command word is spoken and suddenly a pair of regular sized double doors appear before the cube. The doors are open and you can see into what you would guess to be the interior of a building. The floor is stone and the walls wooden.

Immediately inside is a large central area and more doors lead away from it. Boxes and crates of supplies fill up a large portion of this area. Lord Sharadin steps through the doors.

“The stables are over there,” Sharadin states pointing towards another set of double doors. “The Stone Cube has 15 chambers to it and is much like a manor house, complete with bedrooms, living areas, practice chambers, and a kitchen. It has borne numerous great men and women before, starting with Victor the 2nd and his comrades. History has been made in here.”

“The operation of the cube is simple enough. There is a command word to open and close the door and they can be used from inside or out. The interior is essentially a pocket dimension, a place outside of our reality. The stone itself weights only a few pounds; it is possible to be teleported from one place to another. Everything inside goes along with it. It’s useful for moving many things quickly. All right, in you go.”

The mounts are shown into the stables and the last of the supplies are loaded in. Lord Sharadin closes the door and the portal to exit the Stone Cube vanishes.

A few minutes later the portal reopens and the scene outside is vastly different from the courtyard of the Duke’s Fortress in Corunglain. You’re in a dark, 30’ square chamber. The first thing you notice is the cold. It’s much colder here than in Corunglain and frost seems to cover everything. There are numerous, normal spider webs coated in ice and they glisten in the light.

Lanterns are lit and you can see that a single door leads out of the room. Dust covers the floor. On the west wall you see that an elegant design has been carved into the wall. It is this design that was used as the target for the teleport spell.

On the other side of the room are three simple beds that do not appear to have been used in a very long time. No one is about, nor are there any bodies here.

“We made it safely,” Lord Sharadin will state. “Time to start unloading.”

The only door out of the room is checked. Beyond lies the Temple of Heironeous that was indicated on the map. It does not appear to have been defiled. Much like the other room, it is cold and a layer of frost coats everything. There is much dust on the floor. Again, no one is about. There is an altar made of bluish stone, while a pair of statues to Heironeous flanks it.

The double doors that lead out of the Shrine appear to have been smashed open from the outside. Nothing unexpected can be seen through the opening.

Between the two rooms, the supplies and the mounts are unloaded from the cube. As the process nears its conclusion, Lord Sharadin speaks to Sir Validar. The mage hands Validar a piece of white chalk and a piece of yellow chalk.

“I will scry this carving on the third morning from now. If all is clear, then make a mark with the white chalk. If it is not safe to come here then draw the mark in yellow. Do you understand? And make sure that the arrival area remains uncluttered. I do not wish to Teleport into a solid object."

When the unloading is complete, Lord Sharadin closes up the Stone Cube and picks it up once more. He turns to face the group.

“Good luck to all of you. I will see you soon.”

The mage casts another Teleport spell and is gone.

A mystery:

As the group prepares to begin their explorations, a white light gets your attention. Kneeling before the altar is what appears to be a Priest of Heironeous! However, the Priest is translucent and can be seen through. This Priest seems oblivious to your presence and is deep in prayer.

Unexpectedly, the now repaired double doors to the shrine burst open and several translucent men quickly enter. The first two men carry a third who appears to have been injured. A fourth man trails and quickly closes the double doors behind them. He then bars the doors.

“We cannot hold them!” one of the men carrying the wounded man cries out. As you look closer you can see that each of these men have been in battle. These new arrivals also seem to be oblivious to your existence. “The invaders are coming here!”

The Priest rises from his meditations and regards the new arrivals. He reaches for his battleaxe.

“We must hold!” the Priest declares. “The Shield must be protected at all costs!”

Something large strikes the outside of the double doors, but the bar holds. More blows follow and the bar begins to weaken and finally it breaks. The doors are smashed in, just like they were when you first saw them. But no one is there! The area outside the doors is empty!

A fierce combat begins among the translucent humans, but no one can see who or what their foes are. Anyone who gets too close to the combat will discover that the combatants are not really there and that they pass harmlessly through you. Likewise, none of the group can touch the translucent beings. It’s as if they are not really there.

“No one interfere,” Olivia calls out. “I believe I understand what we are witnessing here. We are in no danger.”

The unseen enemy eventually overwhelms the humans. The dead are dragged away and then all the translucent figures vanish. If you look closely through the frost, you can see their bloody trial leading off.

“I have heard tales of those who died while leaving some important task unfinished,” Olivia explains. “I believe they are known as spectral minions. It is true that they are a form of undead, but they are not a baneful one. Their spirits are trapped here until whatever task they were supposed to accomplish is completed. They are trapped reliving their last moments of life throughout eternity. A horrible fate.”

GM Notes:

Sherra restocked her arrows, but no magical shafts were to be had.

You’re now in Fort Fletcher. There is a combat map in the Private area for this level. I’ve numbered the rooms to make things easier.

Now what?

Sir Validar -

With Lady Gabriella:
"I can only hope that you are indeed correct that we will see each other again sooner than expected. That thought will make the time apart much easier." Validar leans in and kisses his beautiful companion briefly. "That and the expectation of another kiss from your beautiful lips."

"That's a very sweet thing for you to say. Yes, the days to follow are going to be long ones, but we will be together again."

"It is only the truth, my lady. And yes, we will be together again."

"I fear that my chances of success are limited. I've never even met the Duke of Elcadan before. Of course, I didn't have the King with me at that time either. I am sure that the Duke will see him."

"I would not be surprised if the vile Duke of Elcadan did his best to appear cooperative, but truly do nothing that does not further his own ends. I am very curious to hear the outcome of these talks."

"I know how difficult it can be to be away from loved ones during these trying times. Perhaps I will have responses for you and that will force me to seek out again."

"If that is true, then I will be doubly pleased, Gabriella. Anything that brings you to me more quickly than expected is a good thing in my eyes."

"Be safe on your travels, my lady. I eagerly await our next encounter."

"Be safe yourself, Sir Validar. You're bound to see much more danger than I."

"I may not be able to remain safe with the fort to reclaim, but I will certainly be well. This group has managed to deal with all dangers and I have no worries that we will successfully survive these next missions."

Here is their morning re-written, after Fireside Promises.

As dawn approached, the first light of day began to peek through the cracks in the shutters, casting a soft glow across the room. The air grew chilly, but their bodies remained entwined, generating their own warmth.

They awoke slowly, the realization of the day's events gently seeping into their consciousness. Validar pulled Gabriella closer, feeling the warmth of her body against his own. They shared a quiet breakfast of bread and cheese, delivered by a discreet servant who knew better than to disturb their solitude. The simple meal was a stark contrast to the grand feasts they had shared previously, but it felt more intimate, more meaningful.

As they ate, they talked in hushed tones about the upcoming mission to Fort Fletcher, Validar's eyes never leaving hers. He described the quick journey, the potential dangers, and the importance of this mission. Gabriella listened attentively, her gaze a mix of admiration and concern. She knew that Validar was a skilled warrior, but she couldn't help but worry about the perils that potentially awaited him.

When the last of the food was gone, Validar helped her to her feet. They walked to the window, watching the sun rise over the city. "I'll be back soon," he assured her, his voice firm but gentle. "We'll have many more mornings like this."

Gabriella nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. She knew he had to go, but the thought of being apart was unbearable. "Be safe," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Validar kissed her forehead. "Always." He stepped away and began to dress, his movements quick and efficient. He knew the longer he lingered, the harder it would be to leave. He turned to her and asked, now that she had something of his, the ring from his mother, to connect with while they were apart, if she had some memento for him as well.

Gabriella searched her thoughts. She removed a dark blue ribbon from her hair. It had matched her attire from the Guardians' feast the night before. "Here," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "Take this. It's not much, but it's something to remember me by." She placed the ribbon in his hand. He lifted it to his nose taking in the scent of her perfume.

"Perfect." He took her in his arms and they embraced and kissed warmly. "I must gather my things for the mission. But I will see you before we leave." The morning of Validar's departure had arrived, bringing with it a mix of excitement and dread. They had spent a night filled with love and comfort, but now the reality of their separation loomed.

Sometime later, the Guardians were gathered and their supplies and mounts had been loaded up into the Stone House. Once everyone was inside, they would be teleported to Fort Fletcher and the recovery of the abandoned fort would begin.

Gabriella stood in the courtyard, her hand in Validar's. She could feel the strength in his grip and the warmth of his palm. His armor was gleaming in the early morning light, a stark contrast to the softness of her dress. The air was filled with the clink of metal and the muffled sounds of the horses' hooves on the cobblestones.

"Remember, I'll be with you in spirit," she said, her voice firm despite the tremble in her chest. She knew the risks of his mission but didn't want to add to his burden with her fears.

Validar looked into her eyes, his own filled with determination. "And I will carry you with me, in my heart," he replied, tying the blue ribbon around his sword's scabbard. It would be a constant memory until they were together again. "I will see you next in Pyris!" They embraced a long time and kissed. It was a kiss meant to last them throughout their time apart.

Finally, they broke apart and Validar turned to join his companions. The other Guardians had gathered their own mounts and were checking their supplies. The air was electric with anticipation and a hint of unease. The mission ahead was critical, and everyone knew it could be dangerous.
Gabriella watched him go, the ribbon fluttering in the light breeze, a dark blue against the color of his armor. She felt a pang of sadness but also a surge of pride. He was a hero, and she was the woman he loved.

King's Audience:
"It is as you say, Sir Validar. What opportunities may come in the future cannot be seen in the here and now. It is my intention to reward those who serve me and the kingdom during my rule. You are already destined to rule when your father decides to relinquish control of Pyris. We shall see if something else comes along between now and then."

"My King, I welcome any opportunity that comes my way to make Cynalon a better Kingdom. Pyris is the land of my birth and I will strive to be the best Baron that I can be for my people and for my king. If additional duties are presented to me, then I shall surely approach them as I do all important things in my life." The King is clearly still evaluating the noble warrior, despite his recent knighting. That is not unexpected, Sir Validar thinks to himself. He would be careful in who he trusted so early as well. But the opportunity has been mentioned and the topic has been broached. It is one more step along Validar's ambitious plans and goals.

Validar is silent when the King mentions the political situation regarding Stone Ridge. There was a point when he considered a tryst with the Lady Ardel himself. She is certainly beautious and known to be kind and genuinely cares about the reconstruction of her fallen lands. She will make a fine Baroness for the right man. As such a political tie between Stone Ridge and Pyris would help to deflect much of the damage done by Elcadan and help to stabilize the area against the largest threat. Those thoughts all seem to be thrown out when Lady Gabriella enters the mix however. While Lady Vera would make a fine wife, Gabriella is all that and much, much more. He cannot think about her without his heart beginning to race.

Sir Acerion and the Lady Ardel would make not only a strong couple, but a very powerful political ally. Acerion has grown closer to their Azrellian priestess however, whihc would certainly ever preclude such an arrangement. Wordlessly, Validar looks over to his good friend, Sir Corley, and gazes at him for a long moment. It is not an unreasonable thought, Validar concludes.

“At least you are honest, Sir Corley. I admire that in a man. I think that your future is a promising one.”

Indeed, Validar thinks to himself. The lad seems so different since being healed by the Azrellian priestess. It can only be a good thing, Validar decides.

Speaking to you all, the King will close saying, “Good fortune to you on your mission at Fort Fletcher. I am sure that your reports will be ones of success. Until we meet again.”

"We will succeed in all that you ask, Your Majesty. Of that you may be certain."

Comings and goings...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

Lord Sharadin is only an hour late for their planned departure to Fort Fletcher, so this is not a big delay. Sir Validar is pleased about that.

The Archmage places what at first glance appears to be a simple 6” stone cube on the ground. A command word is spoken and suddenly a pair of regular sized double doors appear before the cube. The doors are open and you can see into what you would guess to be the interior of a building. The floor is stone and the walls wooden.

Validar has heard tales of this artifact and the many uses that it has offered past Kings during their exploits. On the surface, it seems somewhat mundane as far as artifacts go, but this item has many more uses than what first appear.

Validar will motion for the horses to be led to the stables. He takes a moment to look around. There is indeed history and stories aplenty.

"There is one phenomenal tale regarding King Victor the Second," Validar will explain to his group. "The King was adventuring and his group found themselves on a high rope bridge. One of his team was knock from her footing and the King lept off the bridge after her. He not only managed to catch her, but open the doors of this cube before them as they fell, saving themselves with the extra-dimensional space that exists here. It is astounding to consider the bravery involved in such an act."

The group arrives safely in Fort Fletcher and Lord Sharadin opens the portal once more. Validar begins to give orders as soon as he steps from the Cube. "Lord Corley and Arocken, guard the door. We have to consider ourselves in enemy territory from this moment on, until this Forts is completely reclaimed. Chareos and Sherra, begin removing the horses from the stables. Everyone else, let's get the supplies emptied as quickly as possible. We will store everything here until this level is cleared and then move on from there."

"Understood," Validar will respond, taking the colored chalks and stashing them away for safe keeping. "White is safe and yellow is not. We will endeavor to do our best to supply a white marking for your scrying."

When the unloading is complete, Lord Sharadin closes up the Stone Cube and picks it up once more. He turns to face the group.

“Good luck to all of you. I will see you soon.”

The mage casts another Teleport spell and is gone.

"I do not believe in luck, Lord Sharadin. But we welcome your intent," Validar says with a slight wave of his hand. He then pulls his swordblade from its scabbard. "Good travels to you, until three days hence."

Turning to the rest of the group, Validar will say, "Form up into the groups that we established. Ivy and Acerion are the point."

Soon the group sees the spectral play that unfolds before them. Quickly, Validar understands that this is an image of something that actually happened here.

“No one interfere,” Olivia calls out. “I believe I understand what we are witnessing here. We are in no danger.”

"Indeed, I believe her words to be true as well." Validar continues to watch intently, looking for any clues that may present themselves.

The unseen enemy eventually overwhelms the humans. The dead are dragged away and then all the translucent figures vanish. If you look closely through the frost, you can see their bloody trail leading off.

"Curious," Sir Validar says. "The priest over there mentioned protecting the Shield. Most likely he was speaking of the Shield of Justice, part of the Guardian Shield artifact. The implication is that whatever we saw kill these men was after the Shield, and perhaps more. Strange however, that we were not told that the Shield of Justice was recently here. Perhaps that was neglected since it was obviously spirited away and likely is no longer here."

Validar looks to see if there is any mounting where the large stone Shield of Justice might have been displayed and guarded here. "The blood trails under the frost correspond to the vision we witnessed, so likely we have seen the recent past and not some distant and ancient event. That has both fortunate and unfortunate circumstances attached to them. However, securing the fort is of much more immediate importance than recovering the Shield of Justice."

"The main group will stay here and see if there are any other clues to what happened in this chamber. Corley, you go to the southern door in the hall. Be certain that the stone block allows passage to the ballista platforms. Acerion, you and Ivy take the door at the end of the hall. Aria, the one closest to that one. Grondar and I will explore the room with the archer slits that looks down to the valley."

"Aroken and Sherra will guard the doorway to this hall and act as coordinating eyes and ears for each of the assault groups. Move out." Validar will wait until the other three groups are on their way before he nods to Grondar to move forward. Besides the both of them are now much faster than the rest of the group due to their magickal items. Validar will open the door cautiously and look about for anything that may be about.

Farian

The morning comes too soon for some and the final preparations are made. The group’s mounts are gathered together for the trip to Fort Fletcher. Aria shows up bearing 15 kegs of ale, as she noted that it was not on the supplies list. The Priestess Olivia is there as well. She carries a mace and wears a backpack. Lord Sharadin finally does arrive about an hour late.

Seeing Aria arrive on a wagon of barrels, Farian asks, “Milady what have you brought us?” Upon hearing what it is Farian let’s out a laugh and says, “Ah, a women after my own heart.” He adds, a smile still on his face, “I was wondering whether we would die of thirst or not!”

Upon reaching the fort Farian makes himself useful and begins moving supplies from the Stone Cube. Once completed he will look about the temple and rooms to see his surrounding areas, though he will not pass Arocken or Sherra's scout line.

While doing this he will have his shield in place and warhammer out and at the ready.

Chareos

While waiting for the others in the courtyard Chareos mills about trying to curb his nerves for the coming trials. About an hour later, Lord Sharadin finally appears and casts a stone to the ground. Speaking a command word the doors open and a large area lies within.

Aria soon arrives with several kegs. Unsure of what it is he soon finds that it is ale. "Dwarves!" He thinks to himself. Only they would bring ale to brighten their day.

He soon helps the dwarves move their ale as well as moving his horse within the Stone Cube.

Stepping out of the Stone Cube the chill in the air hits him and he begins to shiver. Looking about, frost lays everywhere. Looking further he notices the caved in door. Soon after a sight that chills him more so than the cold unfolds before his very eyes.

Afterward Chareos wonders something, "If they are reliving the last moments of their lives, perhaps there is more to just protecting the shield. There may be more of a clue to the wounds that were inflicted on them." If the ghostly show continues Chareos will pay attention to the wounds that were inflicted to them and try to distinguish what sort of weapon could make such a wound.

“How long ago did this fort fall? And what did it fall to?” After some thought, he will add “Surely if the Shield was here, it would not have been left when the hordes could freely come and go as they please.” He realizes what he says is mundane though he says it anyway.

After taking the horses/supplies from the stone room he will look to the walls and floors on the chamber. Considering there may be dust he will look for an area where there is less dust in the shape of a shield or support that could hold one.

Freeing the Fort...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

Seeing that the blood on the stones is not recent at all, Validar understands that this was not from the recent overrun ambush that the Fort experienced.

Chareos is the first to voice the question on when this may have happened.

“How long ago did this fort fall? And what did it fall to?” After some thought, he will add “Surely if the Shield was here, it would not have been left when the hordes could freely come and go as they please.”

"What we were seeing must be from the fall of Fort Fletcher during the reign of King Victor the Fifth. It was when the humanoid invasion took many of the lands in this territory, including Ardelphia, about 50 years ago. Judging by the uniforms of the soldiers, that is most likley the time frame of this vision."

"The Fort was taken by the Humanoid invaders, but that is not to say that there was not something or somethings else with them. And we are not completely certain who or what is the main driving force behind the enemy. The War with Keln continually drained away men and supplies and this outpot was not sufficiently manned to defend against the sudden and unexpected attack."

"Often there is a particularly powerful and charismatic humanoid who manages to unite the warring tribes and races and form a super army. It is my contention that in most cases there is another force behind this warlord. The question is: who is this unknown enemy? For they are the true enemy."

"As for the Shield of Justice, I was not told specifically that it was taken during the Humanoid Invasion. However, it was not alluded to being held by Cynalon recently and therefore was likely lost at this time. It certinly would not have smply been left here, but it may be that there was no one left to protect it."

I can teach you the awkwardness that I pass off as dancing if you wish." The last is said with the accompanyment of more laughter.
Sherra's words draw a smile from the somewhat stoic priest. "If you please, yes, I do wish it," Yusef replies. It quickly becomes apparent that Yusef is very agile and graceful, and seems to learn fairly quickly. Impressively, he manages to avoid stepping on her feet even once, although at one point it seems almost that he will fall down in his contortions to avoid doing so.
Sherra wrote:During the time they are together, Sherra asks Yusef, "So I understand you are a priest. I seem to fit in well with them for some reason, although I do not claim to hold much faith to a particular belief, although I guess a prayer or two to Tymora probably counts to some degree. Grondar and I hit it off rather well and he has taught me a lot of the Dwarven language. So what was the decision you reached to become a priest, if I may ask?"
"Hmm..." Yusef murmurs, considering the question. "After leaving Elcadan, I travelled about for quite awhile. I did a little of this and a little of that, but always felt like a piece was missing from my life. Suddenly without my mother to point me in the right direction, I found myself wandering, lost. It eventually occurred to me that I had no direction, no sense of purpose.

"In time, I came across the monastery dedicated to Celestian. Spending a little time there resting and talking with the brothers and sisters there, I discovered that I had found a purpose, a meaning for my life. Thus, I joined the monastery as an initiate and became a brother of the order. It just felt... right... somehow, and I haven't regretted it since. Now, no matter how far I wander, I never feel lost as I know that there is a reason for my being there."

After a few more steps of the dance, Yusef turns the question back to Sherra. "So what about you? How did you end up a part of this valiant crew?"
Chareos wrote:Raising his glass with a smile, “May the Gods smile upon you!”
The announcement of their engagement comes suddenly, but not unexpectedly. Yusef joins the toast to the new couple. "May the path you travel together be full of joy and hope."

The next morning, they gather to await the journey to Fort Fletcher. As Lord Sharadin is a bit late in arriving, Yusef will take the opportunity to chat with Sherra for a time. Somehow, the possibility of getting to know her better seems very appealing...

Sharadin arrives and shows them the operation of the Cube. Yusef listens carefully, just to make sure he understands how to operate it properly, should the need arise. He joins the group entering the enchanted box, helping with the loading of animals and supplies as needed. It is truly an incredible artifact! Yusef looks about at the huge interior, examining the different rooms, amazed at the magic that must be imbued into the box. Then making himself comfortable, he prepares for the journey.

Next moment, they have arrived. Despite having been teleported by Sherwood previously, this is different and Yusef cannot quite believe that the whole place has arrived at their destination already. Nevertheless, there is work to be done, so Yusef joins those involved in unloading all of the supplies from the Cube. While they are working, Sharadin discusses their means of communication with Validar. Moments after the work is done, the mage is gone and they are left in the haunted fort.

As they emerge into the temple of Heironeous, they are treated to quite a spectacle. Translucent spirits act out the scene of their deaths as though this were some ghostly theatre. The priestess Olivia briefs them on what they have just seen, though Yusef had surmised most of it already. It is the content of their story that interests him. It seems that they died defending the fort from a powerful enemy, and lost the Shield of Justice in the process. Will these spirits be released to walk their final path once the fort is reclaimed, or not until the Shield is regained and returned? Hopefully, they will live to see that day.

Validar issues orders, and Yusef joins what has been dubbed the anchor group. Once the two-person teams move out, Yusef begins to explore the chapel, looking for any further clues as instructed.

Lyonessa:

Lyonessa can not help but smile at Sir Acerion's announcement of the engagement. She catches Ivy's eye and gives her a knowing smile. There is no mention of a date, but given that we need to get to the fort in the morning, there can't possibly be time now. It's a wonderful moment and Lyonessa finds herself thinking of Laucian again, wondering what he would think of the news.

The Stone Cube is an amazing artifact. Lyonessa marvels at how large the interior really is! She will help with the loading of supplies as needed and begin to settle in. However, they've already arrived! She isn't sure why she expected a longer trip.

Lyonessa helps once again move supplies into the Fort. The chill is very noticeable, and she draws her cloak up around her tighter. If it becomes too unbearable for anyone, she will prepare her spell. Hopefully all the moving about will keep everyone warm, especially because tension is high.

As they move into the Temple of Heironeous, Lyonessa is glad to see it does not appear defiled. However a scene is played out, and Olivia calls out there is no danger. Lyonessa pays attention and wonders just how old this scene truly is. There is something growing in the back of her mind, something familiar somehow...

Almost trance-like, Lyonessa says, "The Shield of Justice lies beyond the ether in Fort Fletcher." Then she stares about blankly for a second as if she doesn't know where she is. Recovering, she looks around before realizing she is the one who had just spoken, "I'm not entirely sure I know how I knew that, but it seems true to me."

Grondar:
Argent wrote:“Why thank you, Grondar. What a wonderful thing to say.”

"You are most welcome, Argent. Would that we could have more such gatherings."
Sherra wrote:Sherra notes that Grondar is there and a devious smile crosses her face for a second. Ultimately though, she decides not to go and try to drag her dwarven friend out for a dance.
Seeing Sherra looking in his direction, Grondar smiles contentedly back as she returns to her dancing. *Need to find that woman a boyfriend,* Grondar thinks to himself. Strangely, he is fairly oblivious to the interest she has shown in Yusef.

Sir Acerion's announcement of his engagement with Lady Ivy brings a light to Grondar's eyes. Many toasts are given, and Grondar joins in the celebration of this couple. "May the gods light your way and heap their blessings upon you. May you love, honor and cherish each other throughout eternity. Oh, and if you wish it, I would be happy to preside over your nuptuals." Though they will probably choose a priest of their own faith, he would be remiss in his duty to Berronar if he didn't offer.

Eventually the celebration winds to a close and Grondar makes his way to bed. Disappointingly, neither Aria nor Farian join him for morning devotions. It seems he is failing in his duty to bring his people closer to their gods. Perhaps he should look to the priestly leadership for ideas on how better to serve this purpose. Unfortunately, it is likely to be some time before he has an opportunity to contact them.

He will see about restocking his bolts for his crossbow, but will make no other special provisions other than to prepare his spells.

At the appointed hour, Grondar goes to join the gathering of the Guardians for their departure to Fort Fletcher. Not long after, Aria arrives with a load of ale. "Good morning, Aria! I see you remembered the most critical supplies," Grondar says with a smile. Happily he goes about helping her unload the barrels.

With Sharadin running late, Grondar takes a moment to greet Olivia. "Good to see you, Olivia. I was pleased to hear that you would be joining us. With both you and Lady Ivy in attendance, the undead infesting Fort Fletcher will have every reason to know fear."

Arriving late, Sharadin reviews the functioning of the Stone Cube. Supposedly, it's been used successfully many times in the past. Still, Grondar eyes the thing uncertainly. "We're supposed to get inside that thing?" he grumbles, standing back a bit. "Still, I guess being made of stone, it might be safe enough." With some trepidation, Grondar joins the others entering the magic box. Once inside and looking about, it feels comfortable enough, so Grondar turns to assist Aria in loading the ale. Besides, it helps take his mind off his anxiety.

Moments later, the door to the Stone Cube opens and Sharadin announces that they have arrived. Immediately, they set to work getting all of the supplies unloaded from the cube. As they work, Grondar notes the difference in temperature; clearly, they have moved farther north, which is in keeping with the location of the fort on the border of the Broken Lands.

When the unloading is done, Sharadin departs with the Stone Cube. Grondar eyes the sigil on the wall that Sharadin had discussed with Validar before moving into the Temple of Heironeous. The chapel is very nice, with an attractive blue altar.

Moments later, white light swells in the room. When he can see again, Grondar spots the translucent man kneeling before the altar. He is joined by other translucent men who enter and bar a noncorporeal version of the door to the temple. As they prepare to defend themselves, the door is smashed open by invisible intruders, who slay the men and drag their bodies from the room. Though the show is played out by intangible spirits, it is a moving reminder of the grimness of their task.

More importantly, one of the participants mentions a shield, which others in their group speculate may be a reference to the Shield of Justice that they have been tasked with recovering. Out of the blue, Lyonessa makes a cryptic pronouncement concerning the Shield, but there isn't time to really consider it at the moment. It is strange that she doesn't seem cognizant of where the information came from, though.

The time to move out comes, and Grondar joins Sir Validar as one of the specified point teams. It occurs to Grondar that Sir Validar recently received Boots like his own. "I believe we could cover a lot of ground in a short time, Validar. Should we look to use that to our advantage, or go slow and cautious. After we're done with the room you suggested, I suspect we could scout the upper floor and meet the others by the temple across the way in the time it would take them to make it across."

Sir Validar -

"We're supposed to get inside that thing?" he grumbles, standing back a bit. "Still, I guess being made of stone, it might be safe enough."

"It is one of the most well-regarded artifacts of Cynalon, my dwarven friend," Validar explains. "There is no danger in using the Stone Cube for transport."

Validar turns to the young bard and gives her a questioning look. "Is there something more? And what do you mean by beyond the ether: on the ethereal plane somehow?" Validar waits for any further clarification of this unexpected statement.

"I wonder if Lyonessa's comment is a part of the image we are seeing and the residual effects of this event, or something else. In either case, this may be a bit of mystery, but I am happy for any assistance of finding the Shield of Justice. What can any of the mages or priests tell me about ways to enter the ethereal plane?"

"I would like to use our mobility to our advantage in a number of ways. certainly we can cover large open spaces and I intend for us to do so. Also we will be able to more quickly support other teams should they encounter any resistance."

"Once we are certain that this immediate area is clear, then, yes, the two of us can quickly scout the rest of this level while the others move across to the other temple."

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Sir Corley:
Lord Charoes wrote:Chareos is still not used to his title and it takes him a moment to get used to it. "Then perhaps you would do me the honor of being your student. If time permits I would wish to learn of all three weapons, so I can better defend myself and my people. If I am to become half as skilled as either of you I would be content! For you both are formidable men in battle."
“I would be my pleasure, Lord Chareos. Come, let us see if we can find a blade for you to use.”
Yusef wrote:"I'm sorry, but you are mistaken, Sir Corley. That is very much to tell, and I suspect there is far more to it than you have told. I can see where it might be daunting to be the son of a General, though, as well as the childhood friend of the renowned Sir Validar. Speaking of whom, has his father recovered? Is he in need of assistance?"
“There is a kernel of truth to what you say, noble priest. Indeed, the task of living up to my father’s expectations has been daunting. But now, I think he would be proud of my accomplishments. When I was younger, I dreamed of such a thing, no doubt fuelled by Sir Validar’s own drive to reach Knighthood, but never put any real thought into reaching that lofty goal.”

“Yes, Baron Relon has recovered from his affliction thanks to the efforts of Lady Elspeth of Azrella. The last I heard he was doing well and once more ruling his lands.”
Yusef wrote:"In truth, I am new to the outside world. My mother was taken from a caravan in her family's lands and sold into slavery. The man who bought her - and fathered me upon her - is in the lineage of one of the oldest and most corrupt merchant families in Elcadan. As his son, I had a little more freedom and was treated a little better than most of the other slaves. I was able to use that freedom to escape some years ago. I wandered for a while, searching for some purpose and meaning to my life. Eventually, I stumbled upon a monastery dedicated to Celestian. I joined the brotherhood there and was trained as one of their wandering monks. Little more than a week ago, I chanced upon Lord Sherwood and his small band down near the town of Rifllian. We traveled the same road until reaching this place. And now, it seems, I travel a different road..."
Sir Corley listens to Yusef’s tale with great interest and more than a little anger. “Aye, fabled Elcadan seems little more than a pit of scheming vipers! It would shock me that such a thing could happen anywhere in the Kingdom, but there it does not. I can’t imagine that our new king will allow the current state of affairs to continue on as they are. Indeed, I would suspect much change is in store in Elcadan.”

Later that evening, Sir Corley attends the group gathering. He enjoys Lyonessa’s latest musical composition and listens to Sir Acerion’s announcement.
Sir Acerion wrote:"I would like to share some news with all of you, my friends and companions," Acerion begins. "Thank you to those who brought us together this night, it is a real treat to be in such fine company. I also wish to be the one to tell you that I have proposed to the lady Ivy last night, and to my joy and honor, she has accepted." He will turn and smile at Ivy, taking her hand in his and kissing it.
“Let me add my own congratulations to the happy couple. May the years you spend together be happy ones!”
LadyArgent wrote:Although it turns out to not be much of a problem, as Sir Corley seems to have been trained for this sort of thing. Before too long, Argent is really enjoying the dance and her closeness to the young knight.

“Why, Sir Corley, I believe that you have swept me off my feet! Thank you, so much!”
“It was my pleasure, Lady Argent.”

Sir Corley will gallantly kiss the back of Lady Argent’s hand as the dance ends. He’ll see if Lady Sherra is available to dance next, but he sees Yusef moving towards her, so Sir Corley will just take a seat next to Sir Validar who seems to be lost in thought.

“A most enjoyable evening, my friend. A pity that the Lady Gabriella could not attend. It must be difficult to be separated from her charms. Indeed, there is one lovely lady who often dominates my thoughts that I have not seen in a while. To win her hand would bring a joy to my life that I have yet to experience.”

“But, do not let us wallow on such things! Tonight we celebrate our most recent victory and prepare for the next round of battles to come. A toast then, to all the lovely ladies in our lives! May they remain as beautiful as the first time we gazed upon them!”

Near the end of the evening, Sir Corley will thank Lady Lyonessa for her compositions. “Another rousing tale of great deeds, Lady Lyonessa! My thanks and gratitude for your efforts.”

Next morning, we are transported to Fort Fletcher by Lord Sharadin in the Stone Cube. Corley has heard of the magical artifact, mainly from Validar, as he loved to study the exploits of our past kings. He can see how such a thing would be a boon to an adventuring band. It’s like taking your own private fortress out in the field!

It seems only a moment after we’ve loaded up the Stone Cube that the time comes to unload it again. Sir Corley will see that his warhorse is taken out first. The knight is surprised just how cold it is here.

“This cold is not good,” Sir Corley mutters. “We’ll need heat for ourselves and the mounts soon.”

With Destrier safely out of the Stone Cube, Sir Corley goes to help with removing the supplies when another assignment is given to him.
Sir Validar wrote:The group arrives safely in Fort Fletcher and Lord Sharadin opens the portal once more. Validar begins to give orders as soon as he steps from the Cube. "Lord Corley and Arocken, guard the door. We have to consider ourselves in enemy territory from this moment on, until this Fort is completely reclaimed. Chareos and Sherra, begin removing the horses from the stables. Everyone else, let's get the supplies emptied as quickly as possible. We will store everything here until this level is cleared and then move on from there."
“As you wish, Sir Validar.” Drawing his Greatsword, Sir Corley advances to the double doors that enter into the Shrine to Heironeous. They appear to have been smashed open in the past. The doors themselves lie on the floor and have long since rotted. By the doors is where Sir Corley is when the strange otherworldly show begins. He watches in confusion at first, until Lady Olivia fills in some of the details.

It is suspected that the Shield of Justice is what the ghostly men were defending when Lady Lyonessa makes a strange proclamation.

“Then perhaps the Shield is still here,” Sir Corley muses although he has no idea what ‘beyond the ether’ means.

The call to begin exploration begins and Sir Corley steps up to Lady Olivia. “Are you ready to begin, milady? Stay close.”

Aria:
Grondar wrote:Aria's words cause Grondar's eyes to light up. "You know of Thunderdelve, milady? Not long past I met an ancient dwarf who claimed to have lived there at one time. No other that I have asked had ever heard of the place - in fact, most seemed to think him senile. Nevertheless, I promised him that I would do my best to find and cleanse the place. If we can do so, it would mean the world to him. He gave me directions to finding those halls, so perhaps that will help."
“Yes, I do, although I know next to nothing about it. Before I left Rockhome, I procured a map showing the location of the dwarven holdings in this area. All of them were registered with the Mining Guild back home. A Thunderdelve is noted on the map. It is fairly close to Hammerfall and would be either the closest or second closest location to that city. We’ll be visiting it soon and your vow will be fulfilled.”
Grondar wrote:Grondar returns to his quarters to wash up and change. When he arrives at the celebration, he is wearing clean priestly raiment, sans armor. Looking about, he notes that everyone appears to have come, including Yusef, which pleases him greatly. In particular, he makes certain to greet his dwarven comrades, Aria and Farian. If the opportunity is available, he will sit by the lady Aria.
Aria will attend the gathering, mainly for the food and drink. The half-elf's song of the battle with the dragon is rousing, and Aria will cheer at the small part she played in the conflict. The humans’ style of dancing is rather dull to Aria and she’ll take no part in it. She’ll eat and drink heavily before making her way back to her room for the night.

Next morning, Aria rushes to meet the others having enjoyed a long and deep sleep. But she comes with her own idea of supplies.
Farian & Grondar wrote:Seeing Aria arrive on a wagon of barrels, Farian asks, "Milady what have you brought us?" Upon hearing what it is Farian let's out a laugh and says, "Ah, a women after my own heart." He adds, a smile still on his face, "I was wondering whether we would die of thirst or not!"

“You can’t fight without having ale to quench your thirst afterwards. Why, it would be like an elf not having a tree to hug! It’s just not right!”

Aria critically eyes this so called ‘Stone Cube’. “Hmph. It's stone and a cube, so I guess the name fits.”

The dwarven battlemaiden shares Grondar’s concern over the artifact and mutters “mages” under her breath. Nonetheless, Aria does her fair share of the work in getting her ale in the cube.

The arrival at the Fort is painless and Aria is thankful for that. Humans put way too much trust in magic for her tastes. It’s also cold here.

“This is why we dwarves prefer to live underground. It’s warmer! At least the ale will be cool. Nothing worse than warm ale. Come on, lads. Let's show them how dwarves work.”

Aria will help unload the cube, carrying as much as she can efficiently.

Shortly after that, the ghost show begins and Aria watches with her hands wrapped tightly around her new battleaxe. “Guess this is why folks think this place is haunted. It would scare away most, but we dwarves are made of sterner stuff!”

Validar starts barking out orders and Aria is given a room to explore. She doesn’t remember who the priest she was going to be paired with is, so she’ll just call out. “Whoever is going with me, it’s time to leave! We’ve got us some spooks to stir up!”

He will turn and smile at Ivy, taking her hand in his and kissing it.
Argent noted Ivy's new pendant earlier in the evening, but made no mention of it, but now it makes sense to her. Rising from her seat, she'll congratulate Ivy with a hug.

"My best wishes to both of you! I must say that is a lovely pendant you have there. Very stylish."

Sir Corley wrote:"It was my pleasure, Lady Argent."

Sir Corley will gallantly kiss the back of Lady Argent's hand as the dance ends. He'll see if Lady Sherra is available to dance next, but if he sees Yusef moving towards her, so Sir Corley will just take a seat next to Sir Validar who seems to be lost in thought.
The dance comes to an end and if Argent is disappointed that it’s over so soon, she doesn't show it. Instead, she'll accept Chareos' invitation should he make it after he finishes up dancing with Sherra.

The night ends too soon and Argent is forced to sleep as the time off comes to an end in the morning. She memorizes Secure Shelter in the morning and joins the others waiting for Lord Sharadin to arrive.

Argent hasn’t heard much about the Stone Cube before, but she quickly takes a liking to it. “It’s like having all the comforts of home on the road! I want one!”

The trip to Fort Fletcher is quick enough, but boy is it cold! Argent bundles up in her large fur coat and gets out of the way as the cube is unloaded. Upon hearing the commotion in the next room, Argent comes forth to see what is going on. She sees ghostly figures fighting some unseen enemy. Then something about the Shield of Justice is mentioned.

“Excuse me, but what is this Shield of Justice and the Guardian Shield you’re speaking off? I’ve not heard of them before.”
Sir Validar wrote:"I wonder if Lyonessa's comment is a part of the image we are seeing and the residual effects of this event, or something else. “The ethereal plane co-exists with our reality. It is all around us. The spell Wraithform moves the target partially into the Ethereal, so that might help. But perhaps we’re reading more into what Lyonessa said. Ether may not necessarily mean the ethereal plane. Simply that this shield was hidden beyond something else. Such as behind a wall or in a place where magic is needed to access.”

Argent will look around in the Shrine while the others begin to move out and explore the fortress.

Sherra:
“It was my pleasure,” returning her hug, he laughs slightly at this and says, “I think I would have better odds wrestling with a dragon then accomplishing that.” he says with an easy smile. He thinks for a few moments torn to say something then decides to anyway, “Besides, I fear she is like a shooting star, Attractive to the behold but elusive to grasp.”
Turning to watch Argent with Sir Corley for a moment, she looks back to Chareos and says, "She is indeed quite attractive, but you might be suprised at how elusive she may really be." Sherra gives Chareos another hug before he leaves.
"Hmmm," Sherra says with a smile, "I think you were merely hiding your talent Yusef. You are doing quite well, and might even have a few things to teach me."

Sherra listens to Yusef's tale of how he came to be a priest. She suspects he was purposely leaving out a few finer details, but she doesn't comment. Everyone has their secrets she thinks to herself. He seems to have found his calling though, and for that Sherra is glad.
After a few more steps of the dance, Yusef turns the question back to Sherra. "So what about you? How did you end up a part of this valiant crew?"
"Sherwood brought me in, actually I owe him quite a bit," Sherra explains. "He found me when I was running from some bad people and gave me an opportunity. That's how many of us came together actually. Sherwood knew what types of skills he would need back then and recruited appropriately. Now, here we are, most of us still together, and lots of new and interesting people have joined too." The last is said with a warm smile in Yusef's direction.
Sherra restocked her arrows, but no magical shafts were to be had.
"With all the items we've recovered, you would think we would have found some magical arrows by now," Sherra says to herself, mildly frustrated.

Everyone gathers about the following morning waiting for Lord Sharadin, who ends up being a bit late. Still everything goes smoothly as Sherra is fascinated like many of her friends at the marvelous Stone Cube. The trip is short and everyone finds themselves in the Fort. It is definitely colder here, although not so much as to make it uncomfortable for her yet.
Sherra nods silently, as no words are needed. She moves to the horses with Chareos and begins to lead them out. There is a ghostly scene that is played out in the temple that Sherra notices only as the others stand around and watch. She catches enough to understand what is going on and to hear Lyonessa's cryptic words. It is uncertain whether anything can be figured out now, but it is clearly beyond Sherra's understanding for the moment.
Sherra moves up without sound and takes her indicated position. She has her bow at the ready and watches as everyone moves out in pairs. Keeping a sharp eye out, Sherra is ready to sound an alarm should something attempt to sneak up and ambush anyone.

Acerion:

"That is a noble goal to strive for, Sir Acerion, and one that I fully support. The recovery of Stone Ridge and the re-opening of the mines in that area will be a boon to the Kingdom. The proper ruler of the Barony of Stone Ridge remains in the Ardel family line. Hopefully the Lady Ardel will find a strong man to serve as the Baron of Stone Ridge. As such, I cannot promise you what rightfully belongs to another. But much can happen between now and when Stone Ridge is restored. I promise that your efforts will not be forgotten."

"Of course," Acerion replies. "I would not wish any to be displaced in their rightful rule just because of my goals. As you have stated, there is much that can happen between now and then, and there may be new opportunities that I can not forsee at this point. It is enough of an honor to be thought of for any such future considerations by you, my king."

After the announcement of his engagement to the lady Ivy, everyone begins to toast them and offer their congratulations. "Thank you all for your kind words and warm wishes," Acerion responds.

"Thank you Grondar, we will definitely consider your offer," Acerion replies. He knows the day will be far from arriving and all the details, vague now, will be handled by then. He has some ideas for what he would like, and will ask Ivy her wishes as well. Acerion also hopes all of his friends and companions will be in attendance as well when that day arrives.

The next morning arrives so quickly and Acerion offers up a prayer to Heironeous before donning his armor and weapons. His new armor was cleaned, painted and dedicated in time, and he finds it fits pretty well. Securing his weapons, he joins the others as they wait for Lord Sharadin and our trip inside the Stone Cube.

As everyone moves in supplies and horses, Acerion listens to Validar's tale of King Victor the Second. This item they now use has some truly remarkable history around it, and Acerion feels secure in its magic.

The cold bites into everyone as we arrive at the fort. Acerion listens as Lord Sharadin explains the markings to use and entrusts the duty to Validar.

Turning to the rest of the group, Validar will say, "Form up into the groups that we established. Ivy and Acerion are the point."

As we prepare to move out, Acerion is thankful to see the temple has not been violated. There is a spectral scene that unfolds before them, but the priestess Olivia calls out that there is no danger. The scene is seemingly an old one, forced to be replayed by those who were caught up in those moments so long ago. The Shield is mentioned, and although Acerion's interest is further heightened, they must secure the fort before anything else can occur.

Acerion looks over at Ivy after hearing Validar's final orders. Smiling at her, he asks, "Shall we, my lady?" He heads out, moving towards the door at the end of the hall, remaining alert with his axe at the ready should there be enemies about.

Sir Validar -

In Corunglain:
Sir Corley will just take a seat next to Sir Validar who seems to be lost in thought.

"Yes, unfortunately, she had to depart with the King earlier today. And it is indeed difficult to be apart from her charms. The very thought of her is nearly intoxicating. However, I must admit a bit of surprise at your comment. You always seemed to be enamored with several of the ladies we have encountered. Who, pray tell, is this special woman that has center stage in your heart?" Validar asks, quite curious at this unexpected revelation.

“But, do not let us wallow on such things! Tonight we celebrate our most recent victory and prepare for the next round of battles to come. A toast then, to all the lovely ladies in our lives! May they remain as beautiful as the first time we gazed upon them!”

Validar raises his own cup at Corley's toast. "Indeed I echo your thoughts, my friend. A fine toast!" Validar will drain his drink.

At Fort Fletcher:
It seems only a moment after we’ve loaded up the Stone Cube that the time comes to unload it again. Sir Corley will see that his warhorse is taken out first. The knight is surprised just how cold it is here.

“This cold is not good,” Sir Corley mutters. “We’ll need heat for ourselves and the mounts soon.”

"Indeed you are correct. We need to establish a safe area as soon as possible and get some heat generated here. Each of our three main objectives seem to fight against each other, quite unfortunately."

"However, the main furnace for the fortress is on the lowest level, and that is also where the gates are, so we should work out way down there as quickly as we are able."

It is suspected that the Shield of Justice is what the ghostly men were defending when Lady Lyonessa makes a strange proclamation.

“Then perhaps the Shield is still here,” Sir Corley muses although he has no idea what ‘beyond the ether’ means.

"Based on this sudden unexplained revelation from Lyonessa, that appears to be true, my friend. If so, we will be able to accomplish several tasks here at once."

"The Guardian Shield is an artifact of Stone Ridge and Ardelphia. Unfortunately, it has yet to be put into use. However, it is of great power. Four individual shields make up the artifact and are held in statues in Ardelphia's central square. They would keep beligerent beings away for a distance of forty miles. Quite a powerful defense, you all must agree."

"The four Shields are each dedicated to one of the gods of Cynalon. Helm's Shield of Protection is safe in our hands in Corunglain. We are said to be close to Mystra's Shield of Magic. Perhaps it is in the Tower of Magic that Kharyna and her group are exploring. Heironeous' Shield of Justice is apparantly still here somewhere. Perhaps the clerics managed to successfully hide it. And then there is Azrella's Shield of Life. Each are large stone shields emblazoned with the god's symbol on it. I was not told if they have individual powers besides operating as a whole."

"Then perhaps they were successful in hiding it. Or perhaps some undead creature captured it and sequestered it away itself. We cannot be certain. Do any of the mages have the spell ability to look into the ether?"

Lyonessa:

Validar turns to the young bard and gives her a questioning look. "Is there something more? And what do you mean by beyond the ether: on the ethereal plane somehow?" Validar waits for any further clarification of this unexpected statement.

Lyonessa looks a bit sheepish at Validar's immediate questions. "I'm sorry, but that's all. I don't even know where what I said really came from," she'll say, obviously at a loss for answers.

Argent's words make some sense to Lyonessa, although clearly Argent is far superior in magical knowledge. "It could be shrouded or in a pocket dimension, similar to one we just used. Or it could be anchored to the ethereal plane in a spot accessible from the fort somewhere," she offers.

As Acerion and Ivy prepare to leave, Lyonessa makes sure her mace is ready. It will be good to get moving again, as standing around talking has begun to chill her.

Ivy:
Sir Acerion wrote:"My mother and grandmother are in Alexandria," Acerion tells her. "My grandmother has probably convinced someone, somewhere, by now to have raised an army to march back and retake our lands. She can be quite persuasive," Acerion says with obvious mirth.
"I see," Ivy casually remarks. She wasn't sure if Sir Acerion had family or not. The subject simply never came up. "While I do not know of my blood relatives, there are friends I would like to have present. Elspeth for one."
Sir Acerion wrote:"My father, well, he is not of this plane," Acerion explains. "When you spoke those words of his love for me while recovering from your wounds, I can only wonder about why you would say such a thing." Acerion doesn't pry further, not wanting to fluster Ivy if she honestly doesn't know.
"Not of this plane?" Ivy repeats in surprise. "I guess that explains some of your unusual abilities then."

After a moment's thought, Ivy continues on. "If your father is not of this plane, then perhaps I did meet him there. It is said that when the body dies, the spirit is sent to the higher planes to a place called the City of the Dead. From there, your spirit is sent to its proper place in the afterlife. If your father is not of this plane, then perhaps that is where I was given the message I passed on to you. I honestly don’t remember anything between the troll attack and waking up in the fortress. Perhaps your father used those circumstances to pass a message on to you?”

Ivy will smile happily, but blushes a bit at all the attention being given to her. She’ll earnestly thank everyone for their well wishes.
Grondar wrote:Sir Acerion's announcement of his engagement with Lady Ivy brings a light to Grondar's eyes. Many toasts are given, and Grondar joins in the celebration of this couple. “Thank for your offer, Grondar. Truth be told, we really haven’t even got that far yet. Sir Acerion wishes to wait until the liberation of Stone Ridge and to have his family present, so the event is a long way off yet. Perhaps in the spring or summer.”
Sir Acerion wrote:As others dance, Acerion will wait until a slower song is played by Lyonessa. He will then rise and extend a hand to Ivy after a short bow, "If you would accompany me, my lady, I believe we should share at least one dance."
Ivy will accept Sir Acerion’s hand and say, “I just want to warn you that I’ve never done this before. But it does look like fun.”

The night ends all too soon and Ivy is forced to retire for the evening to rest up for the next day’s activities. Most of the group is already there, but we’re not ready to leave yet anyway, so it’s not an issue. She’ll chat to Olivia and Acerion while waiting.

Shortly after arriving at Fort Fletcher, a spectral event unfolds before us.
Olivia wrote:“I have heard tales of those who died while leaving some important task unfinished,” Olivia explains. “I believe they are known as spectral minions. It is true that they are a form of undead, but they are not a baneful one. Their spirits are trapped here until whatever task they were supposed to accomplish is completed. They are trapped reliving their last moments of life throughout eternity. A horrible fate.”
“I have studied about such things,” Ivy announces. “It is as Olivia said, they are trapped in this state until their task is completed. That means it is up to us to succeed where they failed, so that they can be released and sent to their proper place in the afterlife.”

Lyonessa suddenly speaks up and says something that she has no idea how or why she said it. Ivy can’t help but wonder if Sir Acerion’s father has something to do with this as well. Perhaps he is helping us from afar?
Validar & Acerion wrote:"The main group will stay here and see if there are any other clues to what happened in this chamber. Corley, you go to the southern door in the hall. “Yes, we best get moving. We have much to accomplish before we can rest.”

Brandishing the Kiss of Azrella, Ivy follows Sir Acerion into the fortress.

Yusef:
Sherra wrote:"Hmmm," Sherra says with a smile, "I think you were merely hiding your talent Yusef. You are doing quite well, and might even have a few things to teach me."

Yusef chuckles. "Thank you, fair lady. I spoke true when I said that I have no training in this. However, the fighting arts of our priesthood are in some ways much like dancing, so perhaps that had helped prepare me for this particular trial," he says with a sly wink. "More likely, of course, was that I was simply inspired by your beauty and charm. What could be more magical than that?"
Sherra wrote:"Sherwood brought me in, actually I owe him quite a bit," Sherra explains.
"Sherwood seems a wise man, and appears to have chosen well. This group has been quite successful, and appears poised to continue that trend. I only hope that I can contribute my share it its future success."

When the party wraps up, Yusef will be certain to let Sherra know what a wonderful time he has had and thank her for the dancing lessons and her company this evening. He looks forward to seeing more of her during their travels together.
Corley wrote:“There is a kernel of truth to what you say, noble priest.

Yusef nods. "I'm sure you are right. Any father would be proud of a son like you. You have achieved much, and no doubt will achieve far more in the future."
Corley wrote:“Yes, Baron Relon has recovered from his affliction thanks to the efforts of Lady Elspeth of Azrella. The last I heard he was doing well and once more ruling his lands.”
"That is good news, Sir Corley. Thank you for sharing it with me."
Corley wrote:Sir Corley listens to Yusef’s tale with great interest and more than a little anger.
"Sir Validar has spoken of plans to bring about change in Elcadan, and if anyone is capable of it, I suspect he is. Further, both he and the beautiful Sherra have promised to aid me in freeing my mother, which brings great joy to my heart. It seems that we are poised on the cusp of a time of great change, and it seems this group is destined to play a part in that change. I look forward to all that we may accomplish together."

Upon arrival at Fort Fletcher, it may be noticed by some that Yusef does not appear to be dressed for the weather. Other than his usual pants and shoes, he's wearing a sheepskin vest with the wool on the inside, but no shirt or jacket otherwise. Nevertheless, if he's bothered by the cold, he shows no sign of it.
Lyonessa wrote:Almost trance-like, Lyonessa says, "The Shield of Justice lies beyond the ether in Fort Fletcher." Then she stares about blankly for a second as if she doesn't know where she is. Recovering, she looks around before realizing she is the one who had just spoken, "I'm not entirely sure I know how I knew that, but it seems true to me."
Validar wrote:"I wonder if Lyonessa's comment is a part of the image we are seeing and the residual effects of this event, or something else. In either case, this may be a bit of mystery, but I am happy for any assistance of finding the Shield of Justice. What can any of the mages or priests tell me about ways to enter the ethereal plane?"
Yusef considers Lyonessa's statement for a moment. She seems uncertain what lead her to say what she did. "Perhaps I can be of assistance here," Yusef says, turning to Validar. "I have access to certain holy magics that allow interaction with the Etherial Plane. Once we have cleaned out this fortress, I can request those spells from Celestian search the local Ether for the Shield that you seek." There is futher discussion on this point, but Yusef has little to add.

Grondar:
Aria wrote:“Yes, I do, although I know next to nothing about it.

"That is wonderful news! Thank you, kind lady. It warms my heart to think that the greybeard will be able to return to his long-lost home."
Acerion wrote:"Thank you Grondar, we will definitely consider your offer," Acerion replies. He knows the day will be far from arriving and all the details, vague now, will be handled by then. He has some ideas for what he would like, and will ask Ivy her wishes as well. Acerion also hopes all of his friends and companions will be in attendance as well when that day arrives.
Ivy wrote:“Thank for your offer, Grondar. Truth be told, we really haven’t even got that far yet. Sir Acerion wishes to wait until the liberation of Stone Ridge and to have his family present, so the event is a long way off yet. Perhaps in the spring or summer.”
Grondar bows in acknowledgement of the couple's thanks. "I understand. Just let me know your decision when the time comes."
Aria wrote:“You can’t fight without having ale to quench your thirst afterwards. Why, it would be like an elf not having a tree to hug! It’s just not right!”
"I cannot dispute your logic, Aria. I am happy to give you a hand in transporting these fine barrels."
Validar wrote:"It is one of the most well-regarded artifacts of Cynalon, my dwarven friend," Validar explains. "There is no danger in using the Stone Cube for transport."
Grondar looks at Validar and back at the Cube. "I'm sure it is. Still, we dwarves are less given to strange magics than many of the other races. Nevertheless, in this situation, there is little choice but to use what is available."
Aria wrote:The dwarven battlemaiden shares Grondar’s concern over the artifact and mutters “mages” under her breath. Nonetheless, Aria does her fair share of the work in getting her ale in the cube.
Grondar looks at Aria for a moment and nods in agreement, but says nothing.
Aria wrote:“This is why we dwarves prefer to live underground. It’s warmer! At least the ale will be cool. Nothing worse than warm ale. Come on, lads. Let's show them how dwarves work.”
Once again, Grondar nods and pitches in. While he drinks in moderation - unlike many dwarves - he still has a keen appreciation for the fine brews of his people.

Following Lyonessa's strange pronouncement, there is a discussion of what it may mean and what the mages and priests can do with regard to the Etherial Plane. "Berronar's sphere of influence doesn't reach into the other planes in the manner of Yusef's patron. However, I do have availble one miracle that will allow me to search for extradimentional pockets and such. Perhaps that could be of use."
Validar wrote:"Once we are certain that this immediate area is clear, then, yes, the two of us can quickly scout the rest of this level while the others move across to the other temple."
"Let us not forget that there is one level above us. I believe it would be wise to clear it before beginning to work our way downwards. It was my thought that we could take care of that while the other three groups work through clearing this one."
