Sir Validar -
With Lady Gabriella:
"I can only hope that you are indeed correct that we will see each other again sooner than expected. That thought will make the time apart much easier." Validar leans in and kisses his beautiful companion briefly. "That and the expectation of another kiss from your beautiful lips."
"That's a very sweet thing for you to say. Yes, the days to follow are going to be long ones, but we will be together again."
"It is only the truth, my lady. And yes, we will be together again."
"I fear that my chances of success are limited. I've never even met the Duke of Elcadan before. Of course, I didn't have the King with me at that time either. I am sure that the Duke will see him."
"I would not be surprised if the vile Duke of Elcadan did his best to appear cooperative, but truly do nothing that does not further his own ends. I am very curious to hear the outcome of these talks."
"I know how difficult it can be to be away from loved ones during these trying times. Perhaps I will have responses for you and that will force me to seek out again."
"If that is true, then I will be doubly pleased, Gabriella. Anything that brings you to me more quickly than expected is a good thing in my eyes."
"Be safe on your travels, my lady. I eagerly await our next encounter."
"Be safe yourself, Sir Validar. You're bound to see much more danger than I."
"I may not be able to remain safe with the fort to reclaim, but I will certainly be well. This group has managed to deal with all dangers and I have no worries that we will successfully survive these next missions."
Here is their morning re-written, after Fireside Promises.
As dawn approached, the first light of day began to peek through the cracks in the shutters, casting a soft glow across the room. The air grew chilly, but their bodies remained entwined, generating their own warmth.
They awoke slowly, the realization of the day's events gently seeping into their consciousness. Validar pulled Gabriella closer, feeling the warmth of her body against his own. They shared a quiet breakfast of bread and cheese, delivered by a discreet servant who knew better than to disturb their solitude. The simple meal was a stark contrast to the grand feasts they had shared previously, but it felt more intimate, more meaningful.
As they ate, they talked in hushed tones about the upcoming mission to Fort Fletcher, Validar's eyes never leaving hers. He described the quick journey, the potential dangers, and the importance of this mission. Gabriella listened attentively, her gaze a mix of admiration and concern. She knew that Validar was a skilled warrior, but she couldn't help but worry about the perils that potentially awaited him.
When the last of the food was gone, Validar helped her to her feet. They walked to the window, watching the sun rise over the city. "I'll be back soon," he assured her, his voice firm but gentle. "We'll have many more mornings like this."
Gabriella nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. She knew he had to go, but the thought of being apart was unbearable. "Be safe," she whispered, her voice trembling.
Validar kissed her forehead. "Always." He stepped away and began to dress, his movements quick and efficient. He knew the longer he lingered, the harder it would be to leave. He turned to her and asked, now that she had something of his, the ring from his mother, to connect with while they were apart, if she had some memento for him as well.
Gabriella searched her thoughts. She removed a dark blue ribbon from her hair. It had matched her attire from the Guardians' feast the night before. "Here," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "Take this. It's not much, but it's something to remember me by." She placed the ribbon in his hand. He lifted it to his nose taking in the scent of her perfume.
"Perfect." He took her in his arms and they embraced and kissed warmly. "I must gather my things for the mission. But I will see you before we leave." The morning of Validar's departure had arrived, bringing with it a mix of excitement and dread. They had spent a night filled with love and comfort, but now the reality of their separation loomed.
Sometime later, the Guardians were gathered and their supplies and mounts had been loaded up into the Stone House. Once everyone was inside, they would be teleported to Fort Fletcher and the recovery of the abandoned fort would begin.
Gabriella stood in the courtyard, her hand in Validar's. She could feel the strength in his grip and the warmth of his palm. His armor was gleaming in the early morning light, a stark contrast to the softness of her dress. The air was filled with the clink of metal and the muffled sounds of the horses' hooves on the cobblestones.
"Remember, I'll be with you in spirit," she said, her voice firm despite the tremble in her chest. She knew the risks of his mission but didn't want to add to his burden with her fears.
Validar looked into her eyes, his own filled with determination. "And I will carry you with me, in my heart," he replied, tying the blue ribbon around his sword's scabbard. It would be a constant memory until they were together again. "I will see you next in Pyris!" They embraced a long time and kissed. It was a kiss meant to last them throughout their time apart.
Finally, they broke apart and Validar turned to join his companions. The other Guardians had gathered their own mounts and were checking their supplies. The air was electric with anticipation and a hint of unease. The mission ahead was critical, and everyone knew it could be dangerous.
Gabriella watched him go, the ribbon fluttering in the light breeze, a dark blue against the color of his armor. She felt a pang of sadness but also a surge of pride. He was a hero, and she was the woman he loved.
King's Audience:
"It is as you say, Sir Validar. What opportunities may come in the future cannot be seen in the here and now. It is my intention to reward those who serve me and the kingdom during my rule. You are already destined to rule when your father decides to relinquish control of Pyris. We shall see if something else comes along between now and then."
"My King, I welcome any opportunity that comes my way to make Cynalon a better Kingdom. Pyris is the land of my birth and I will strive to be the best Baron that I can be for my people and for my king. If additional duties are presented to me, then I shall surely approach them as I do all important things in my life." The King is clearly still evaluating the noble warrior, despite his recent knighting. That is not unexpected, Sir Validar thinks to himself. He would be careful in who he trusted so early as well. But the opportunity has been mentioned and the topic has been broached. It is one more step along Validar's ambitious plans and goals.
"That is a noble goal to strive for, Sir Acerion, and one that I fully support. The recovery of Stone Ridge and the re-opening of the mines in that area will be a boon to the Kingdom. The proper ruler of the Barony of Stone Ridge remains in the Ardel family line. Hopefully the Lady Ardel will find a strong man to serve as the Baron of Stone Ridge. As such, I cannot promise you what rightfully belongs to another. But much can happen between now and when Stone Ridge is restored. I promise that your efforts will not be forgotten."
Validar is silent when the King mentions the political situation regarding Stone Ridge. There was a point when he considered a tryst with the Lady Ardel himself. She is certainly beautious and known to be kind and genuinely cares about the reconstruction of her fallen lands. She will make a fine Baroness for the right man. As such a political tie between Stone Ridge and Pyris would help to deflect much of the damage done by Elcadan and help to stabilize the area against the largest threat. Those thoughts all seem to be thrown out when Lady Gabriella enters the mix however. While Lady Vera would make a fine wife, Gabriella is all that and much, much more. He cannot think about her without his heart beginning to race.
Sir Acerion and the Lady Ardel would make not only a strong couple, but a very powerful political ally. Acerion has grown closer to their Azrellian priestess however, whihc would certainly ever preclude such an arrangement. Wordlessly, Validar looks over to his good friend, Sir Corley, and gazes at him for a long moment. It is not an unreasonable thought, Validar concludes.
“At least you are honest, Sir Corley. I admire that in a man. I think that your future is a promising one.”
Indeed, Validar thinks to himself. The lad seems so different since being healed by the Azrellian priestess. It can only be a good thing, Validar decides.
Speaking to you all, the King will close saying, “Good fortune to you on your mission at Fort Fletcher. I am sure that your reports will be ones of success. Until we meet again.”
"We will succeed in all that you ask, Your Majesty. Of that you may be certain."
