Elfquest #1

The combined magicks of Sherwood and Lady Jallarzi take the group away from the cold confines of the Duke’s Fortress in Corunglain. A heartbeat later you reappear in a vastly different location.

The group materializes inside a large room in a wooden dwelling. The first thing you notice is that the air is much warmer than in Corunglain and moister. Its noticeably more humid here, but this doesn’t bother the elves at all. Cold weather clothing will not be required here.

The arrival is more dramatic to Kylie, Lia, and Talen whose elven heritage was opened up by the Father of All Elves. For the first time they feel and sense what full-blooded elves can. The entire area feels alive and that there is a connection between you and all that is around you. You can’t help but feel serene and calm here. It feels like home and that you’re being held in your mother’s loving embrace.

Lilia and Nariya feel all of that and more. So in tune are they to their forest surroundings, that they can even sense the presence of other beings around them without even seeing them. This enhanced sense is a bit overwhelming at first as you’re in an Elfin city and there are hundreds of other beings around. With practice you can tune out this sense, much like you can your regular senses.

Having not been touched by the Father of All Elves, Laucian and Valena don’t feel any different in their homeland.

“We are in the Cynalonian Embassy here in Alfheim,” Lady Salavarian explains. “Alfheim is the only place in the Elfholds where other races are normally permitted. This is where the elves trade with their neighbors.”

You’re arrival does not go unnoticed and a human male enters the room. It is an older man with touches of gray in his thinning hair. “Ah, you’ve returned at last! Welcome to Alfheim. I am Lord Sergei Pyotrev, Cynalonian Ambassador to the Elfholds. We’ve been expecting you.”

Another man slowly steps through the door into the room. It is an older elf that is recognizable to both Lilia and Laucian. It is the Clan Elder of Clan Grunalf, one of the advisors to the Clanmaster himself.

“Welcome home children,” he warmly tells Lilia and Laucian. “And welcome friends and allies. Come, they are expecting your arrival in the Sky Palace.”

GM Notes:

Welcome to the Elfholds! The Clan Elder is the same elf that appeared in Lilia’s very first post a long, long time ago. With the change in campaign direction, I’ve decided to post this under a new name as well.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Kylie:

There is a flash of nothingness, then their destination appears around them. Kylie immediately notes the change in climate, but more emphatic is the feel of the place. The sensation is almost overwhelming, yet it is too pleasant and reassuring to cause anxiety. Her mind instinctively recalls her mother's embrace from when she was little and it is a very comforting feeling.

"Is... is this how you full-blooded elves feel all the time?" she asks in wonder. "No wonder you are so drawn to this place. I've never felt so... at home in my life."
Jallarzi wrote:“We are in the Cynalonian Embassy here in Alfheim,” Lady Salavarian explains. “Alfheim is the only place in the Elfholds where other races are normally permitted. This is where the elves trade with their neighbors.”
Kylie nods at Jallarzi's words, though she is still somewhat stupified by these new sensations. She takes the information in as best she can. Of course, she's heard of Alfheim before, but never visited in person.
Sergei wrote:You’re arrival does not go unnoticed and a human male enters the room. It is an older man with touches of gray in his thinning hair. “Ah, you’ve returned at last! Welcome to Alfheim. I am Lord Sergei Pyotrev, Cynalonian Ambassador to the Elfholds. We’ve been expecting you.”
Making her best attempt at a curtsy, Kylie responds to the introduction. "A pleasure to meet you, Lord Pyotrev. I'm Kylie Lanthorn, daughter of Allorien Feador. You've been expecting us?" This comment surprises her, as they have just learned of their destination so recently themselves.
Clan Elder wrote:“Welcome home children,” he warmly tells Lilia and Laucian. “And welcome friends and allies. Come, they are expecting your arrival in the Sky Palace.”
Once again, Kylie curtsies, unsure how else to respond to the unintroduced elven elder. It occurs to her that he must be quite old to actually show sign of aging. Again, the mention of being expected is surprising, but much of what the experience on their travels is. "Excuse me, sir, but what is the Sky Palace?" With nothing more to say at the moment, Kylie begins to move uncertainly in the indicated direction.

Valena:

Past:

A grimace crosses Kylie's face. "That's roughly what Lilia described. It would seem that our clan has much to make up for. If we succeed in this quest given by Corellon, then maybe that will help."
"Yes, it would. That is why I wished to come along. If I can ease the shame my ancestors felt, then it would be worth it.
"I just found out, and already I feel some bit of that shame. Hopefully, I will get over it."
"You shouldn't be ashamed, Kylie. None of us are responsible for the actions of our ancestors. I am sure they did what they thought was best at the time. There is no reason to believe that anyone else could have done better."
Kylie listens carefully as Valena tells the tale. Lilia had not mentioned this Moorkroft, so that is an added piece of the puzzle. "That is very mysterious. I hope that we will be able to get to the bottom of it. The situation there could be very different now than it was then, so there is no way to know what to expect when we arrive."
"No there isn't. We must be prepared for anything.
As Valena speaks, Kylie's eyes light up. "My mother was... famous?! Really?! Wow. That's pretty incredible. To me, she has always just been my mom. I must have inherited my magical talent from her. Can you tell me of any adventures she had?"
"She and others like here helped defeat the Elfholds against any threats. Our Clanhold, Feadiel, is located on the eastern edge of the Elfholds. (About 88 miles northwest of Crossroads.) There was the constant threat of raiders from either Xorg or from Rockhome. Those are the adventures I mostly heard about. She was frequently away, so I am sure her adventures took her to many interesting places."

Present:

Valena is unaccustomed to traveling by sorcery, but thankfully the trip is almost instantaneous! The familiar sensations of home are felt and Valena noticeably relaxes.

The human woman explains where we are and Valena nods her understanding. She’s been in Alfheim before. Valena nods in greeting to the human lord and will bow in respect to the elfin elder of Clan Grunalf. “Well met, Elder.”

For the most part, Valena remains quiet as she’s just learned of this quest and that their arrival was expected.

Nariya:

Arriving in Alfheim, Nariya drops her look at Laucian. He seems to fancy Lyonessa, and Nariya noticed she wasn't the only one to have been slightly surprised at that. She's not sure what Laucian sees in that frail-looking woman, but she can understand Lyonessa's attraction. maybe he feels the need to protect her she thinks to herself, then drops it for now.

The instant comfort of being within the Elfholds is a sensation that rivals even what Nariya felt in her own lands. She immediately understands why other elves would find leaving here difficult. The stronger sensations overwhelm her and it takes a moment to sort things out. Thankfully someone comes in to break up the attention all of her senses were demanding of her.

“Welcome home children,” he warmly tells Lilia and Laucian. “And welcome friends and allies. Come, they are expecting your arrival in the Sky Palace.”

She gives a nod and simply says, "I am Nariya," in response to the human ambassador, who seemingly was expecting us. The second figure to enter is known to a few of their members, and apparently a clan Elder.

"Thank you," she will say in response to the Elder's greeting and will let her own question about the Sky Palace ride since Kylie asked first.

Kylie nods as she listens to Valena. Perhaps she is right; their ancestors surely did the best they were able, but just weren't up to the task - whatever the reason.

Any news of her mother is more than she has heard in years, and Kylie listens carefully to the story. She knows little of the area that Valena speaks of, and will try to have someone draw her a map when time allows. "Thank you, Valena. It is fascinating to hear of my mother's life before she and dad settled down. If you know any specific tales of her adventures, perhaps you would share one with me someday when we have more time?"

Sherwood:
"I suspected as much, Sherwood," Kylie replies. "I just wanted to verify my suspicions. Not sure I would feel very comfortable in the presence of a king and his court anyway."
“Kings are just people like the rest of us, Kylie. Having a title doesn’t make anyone a better person. I will say that our King is a good man whom I have known for years. There are going to be many changes in the Kingdom now that he is on the throne.”

After another teleport jaunt, we arrive in Alfheim at the Cynalonian Embassy.
“Hello, Sergei,” Sherwood says, shaking the man’s hand. “How have you been?”
Making her best attempt at a curtsy, Kylie responds to the introduction. "A pleasure to meet you, Lord Pyotrev. I'm Kylie Lanthorn, daughter of Allurien Feador. You've been expecting us?" This comment surprises her, as they have just learned of their destination so recently themselves.
Sherwood fields this question.

“While we ourselves just learned of this quest, the elves seemed to have known before hand. Lady Gabriella just completed negotiations with the elves. The elves will be sending troops back to the Corunglain to aid in the defense of the area. In exchange, they requested that I assist them on a quest of great importance to the elfin people. Their request ties into your quest; they are one and the same. Therefore, our eventually arrival here was expected. I’m assuming that our being summoned here will reveal more information about the quest.”
“Welcome home children,” he warmly tells Lilia and Laucian. “And welcome friends and allies. Come, they are expecting your arrival in the Sky Palace.”
“Good to see you gain, Elder,” Sherwood tells the old elf in elfish. “I guess we’re heading to the Sky Palace them. We should get moving then. We’ll be back as soon as possible, Jallarzi.”

Sherwood will follow the Elder to the Sky Palace.

Lilia:

The stay in Corunglain is mercifully short. The city seems to have endured a great tragedy and there seemingly was a shroud of gloom over it. Thankfully, the time spent with the spell books that Argent and Chareos had more than made up for this. To her surprise, the Elf Maiden was able to learn many new magicks!

The time to depart comes and Lilia will say farewell to her former companions. The magic takes them back to the familiar confines of the Elfholds. The sudden sense of being home nearly overwhelms Lilia for a few moments. The feeling of being home is much stronger than she remembers it to be. Her senses are alive and she can even sense the presence of those outside of the room!
Kylie wrote:"Is... is this how you full-blooded elves feel all the time?" she asks in wonder. "No wonder you are so drawn to this place. I've never felt so... at home in my life."
Lilia uses this question to focus on and it helps bring her back to reality.

“Yes, Kylie, although what I am currently experiencing is probably beyond even that. What you are feeling is the effects of the Trees of Life have on us. The Mother Tree was a gift from the Father of All Elves. What you are feeling, indirectly, is the love the Father has for all his children. It is the Trees of Life that provide this feeling and that makes an elfin forest far greater than any regular forest. It makes the outside world seem cold in comparison. Their loss would be devastating to we elves.”

A human comes in, but Lilia says nothing to him, but will nod in his direction when their eyes meet. The elf maiden senses that someone familiar is coming close and she realizes just who it is when he walks in the door.

“Elder!”, Lilia cries out and goes to hug the old elf. “My friends, this is Arloen Treelife, an elder of Clan Grunalf. He has been a friend and mentor to me.”
Kylie wrote:"Excuse me, sir, but what is the Sky Palace?"
“While I have not been to Alfheim before, I know the Sky Palace to be the dwelling place of the Elfin King. We elves tend to live up in the trees, so his palace is said to be in the sky. This is very exciting!”
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Talen:

The whirlwind tour continues. First to the human city of Corunglain and now into the Elfholds themselves! While Talen has felt more relaxed in the forest, this new sensation is overpowering. He never imagined such a wonderful feeling! Talen’s knees buckle and he finds himself sitting on the floor. It’s hard to concentrate from the wonderfulness of it all.
Lilia wrote:“Yes, Kylie, although what I am currently experiencing is probably beyond even that. What you are feeling is the effects of the Trees of Life have on us. Their loss would be devastating to we elves.”
“You’re feeling something greater than this?”, Talen asks in surprise. How could anything be more wonderful than this?” Yes, the loss of this feeling would be awful.”

Lilia wrote:“While I have not been to Alfheim before, I know the Sky Palace to be the dwelling place of the Elfin King. We elves tend to live up in the trees, so his palace is said to be in the sky. This is very exciting!”
“Up in the trees,” Talen can’t help but repeat in wonder. “How is that possible?” They must be pretty big trees!”

Having grown up in the Lost Valley, Talen hasn’t seen many really big trees in his time. Unsure about what is really going on, Talen will follow Sherwood where ever he goes.

“I would be happy to. You’re a member of my Clan and among we elves, loyalty to your Clan is the most important thing.”

Valena is mildly surprised that the reaction of being here is doing to the half-elves and even to the full elves. Perhaps this power given to them by the All Father has something to do with it? It seems normal enough to Valena and she is glad to be back home.

Lilia & Talen wrote:“While I have not been to Alfheim before, I know the Sky Palace to be the dwelling place of the Elfin King. We elves tend to live up in the trees, so his palace is said to be in the sky. This is very exciting!”

“I am familiar with Alfheim,” Valena will say. “Thanks to the Trees of Life, the regular trees here in the Elfholds are huge compared to any you’ve seen elsewhere. Lilia is correct, we elves tend to live in the trees and it is no different here in Alfheim. There are two distinct areas to the city. The ground level where the humans are and then the part overhead, where the elves tend to live. That is where the Sky Palace is.”

"I know you mean well and believe what you're saying, Sherwood," Kylie says. "At the same time, I have not had the best experience with nobles in my life, and he's the highest muckety-muck noble in the land. It is hard to just say, oh, this one is different and wonderful. Only time will show whether that is really true and only time will mitigate my innate distrust of their kind. Maybe that will happen someday, and maybe not. We shall see."
Valena wrote:“I would be happy to. You’re a member of my Clan and among we elves, loyalty to your Clan is the most important thing.”

"Thank you, Valena. I will look forward to the occasion."

Kylie listens, nodding almost absently. "I can certainly understand how losing this feeling would be hard. I'm just experiencing it for the first time, and am already quickly growing attached to it..."
Sherwood wrote:“While we ourselves just learned of this quest, the elves seemed to have known before hand. Lady Gabriella just completed negotiations with the elves. I’m assuming that our being summoned here will reveal more information about the quest.”

"So we were, in effect, the last to know?" Kylie asks with a sly grin. "Any new information will be welcome 'cause I'm certainly still feeling like I'm a bit in the dark. Plus, there seem to be some big logistical hurdles to overcome, though Sharadin implied that they were making headway on those."
Lilia wrote:“Elder!”, Lilia cries out and goes to hug the old elf. “My friends, this is Arloen Treelife, an elder of Clan Grunalf. He has been a friend and mentor to me.”
Kylie kurtsies to the elven Elder, uncertain whether they should introduce themselves or wait to be introduced.

Kylie listens to the discussion regarding this Sky Palace and the huge trees here. Perhaps it is something that must be seen to fully comprehend. Still, she feels some apprehension regarding the mention of the elven king. What she said to Sherwood regarding nobles is true, and it's hard to think that it would be any different with elven nobles and kings. She will have to wait and see how it goes.

Post Continued:

Lady Salavarian steps in and introduces everyone to both Lord Sergei and the elder elf. Arloen will then lead the group to their destination, the elfin Sky Palace.

Emerging from the Cynalonian Embassy, you find yourselves in what appears to be a typical small town. The buildings are all constructed of wood and the streets are dirt. The street is fairly crowded with humans and elves. A few centaurs are spotted further down the street.

Rising high above and all across the town are a dozen of the largest oak trees that you've ever seen. Each has a base at least 30' wide and each stands 300-400' feet high. Rope bridges and catwalks connect the trees to each other, forming a giant web of overhead passageways. Even more remarkable, there are small buildings built on and between branches, and even others seemingly carved out of the trunk the trees themselves!

A wooden staircase spirals up the tree to the higher levels. Each step intricately carved with spirals and other designs. The railings are just as elegant and tend to be carved into curves.

It’s almost another world up here in the trees. Homes and shops are passed by as you move among catwalks high over Alfheim. You’re about two hundred feet above the ground. Reaching a rope bridge, the Clan Elder fearless begins to walk across it. The bridge creaks under your footsteps, but does seem solid enough. Ominously, the bridge says with the breeze. The full-blooded elves pass over the bridge with ease, while Sherwood struggles to maintain his balance on it. The bridge itself spans nearly 100 yards before it reaches the next tree.

By transversing these overhead bridges, the group crosses Alfheim without touching ground. Another bridge is crossed from the second tree as you start to approach an area where several of these giant trees exist close to each other. Once on this third tree, you move across multiple catwalks as you draw closer to your goal.

Up ahead, the Elfin Sky Palace comes into view. It is surely worthy of its name. The Sky Palace is built between three of these giant oaks and their branches intertwine with each other creating a thick canopy of limbs and leaves. Upon this, the Sky Palace is built. The structure is three stores high and a combination of elegantly carved architecture coupled with areas that appear to have been grown that way.

Unlike the dwarves with their love for plain, straight geometry, the Sky Palace is build with elegant arcs and curves. A wide porch surrounds the palace and the posts are carved with elegant leave designs. Growing flowers form the basis for the railing that surrounds the porch. The shingles of the roof are carved in the form of leaves and each leaf appears to be different from its neighbor.

The Clan Elder leads you up to the Sky Palace and you’re now on the porch that surrounds it. He speaks momentarily with a guard before turning back to you.

“Wait here a moment. I will announce your arrival.”

Laucian

Within a blink of an eye Laucian and the others are teleported to Alfhlem within the confines of a lodge dwelling. As the warmer air hits him he can only think one thing, as he idly pets Starfire and places him down before him. “Home.”

Nariya’s gaze soon departs unsure of what she is thinking Laucian merely lets the matter drop for now

O

Laucian notes the elder man greet them and Laucian merely gives him a nod and says, “Greetings Lord Sergei. Been expecting us?” he asks quietly asks himself.

A smile comes to Laucian’s face as he sees the Clan Elder, “Greetings Elder. It is good to see you again.” He will then take his cat from Lia and say “Thank you.”

He will then follow the others toward the Sky Palace.

Though Later on he will ask his clanmaster what he may do for his mount for the time being till he can return for him.

Lia

Arriving in Alfhiem, Lia looks about her within the lodge dwelling as many new yet odd feeling strikes her. She’ cant help but to feel secure almost as if a mother was nurturing her as her own mother did so long ago.

“We are in the Cynalonian Embassy here in Alfheim,” Lady Salavarian explains. “Alfheim is the only place in the Elfholds where other races are normally permitted. This is where the elves trade with their neighbors.”

Lia listens as Lady Salavarian explains where we have arrived, She slowly begins to understand why elves are so hesitant for help, especially if these feelings are normal within their ancestoral home.

Soon after an elderly elf comes into the room, the years seem to be showing as he looks even older then grandmother!!!
Lia remains quiet until spoken to and is content for now to take in her surroundings as the new feelings bombard her senses.

To Save Mother Tree!

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:

When introduced by Jallarzi, Kylie smiles. "A pleasure to meet you. Is Elder an official title within the community, or just a form of address?" she asks.

Exiting the building, it doesn't look so very different from any other town, other than being in the middle of a forest. Of course, many of these trees are far larger than she has ever seen before. And she's never actually seen a centaur before, so Kylie can't help staring at them. "Real centaurs... that's amazing... Do they live here?"

Then they start climbing, and climbing, and climbing. Around and around the spiral staircase up the inside of a huge tree. Kylie finds herself wondering whether it was built there, carved out of the tree, or just grown that way. Whichever, it's quite a unique experience.

They reach a rope bridge high above the ground, her legs feeling the strain of so much climbing. Kylie looks down, and a knot forms in her throat. She's done her fair share of climbing, but never has she been in quite so precarious a position so far above the ground. Fortunately, her training takes over, and she is able to cross the bridge with little danger. Still, she's happy for solid footing when she reaches the other side.

The Sky Palace is immense! Supported by three giant trees, it rises far above their heads. Despite being made entirely of wood, it is quite beautiful an regal. The elven part of her heritage swells a little with pride. The Elder departs for a moment, so Kylie spends the time looking around at this wondrous elven city.

"Are all elven cities like this?" Kylie asks.

Sherwood fields this question.

Laucian looks between Sherwood and the Elder with moderate surprise, he wonders if Divine intervention has graced the elves before hand.

“You’re feeling something greater than this?”, Talen asks in surprise. How could anything be more wonderful than this?” Yes, the loss of this feeling would be awful.”
Laucian raises an eyebrow to this and looks his clanswomen over, “Why is it that you feel different, Lilia? Was there more to this vision in which you saw?” he asks in Elvish.

“Some of us are more in the dark then others.” He playfully replies as Valena and himself has recently rejoined their ranks.
A wooden staircase spirals up the tree to the higher levels. Each step intricately carved with spirals and other designs. The railings are just as elegant and tend to be carved into curves.
Laucan traces the designs with his forefingers as he ascends the stairs after the others. “Fine workmenship.” he says to himself more to anyone else. He can’t help but admire the beauty in the work.
Laucian smiles as the Sky Palace comes into view, Never before has he seen such skill and beauty etched into woodwork. I silently thinks to himself ‘Ehlonna would greatly approve of this.’

“Up in the trees,” Talen can’t help but repeat in wonder. “How is that possible?” They must be pretty big trees!”
“No wonder this ‘Mother tree’ is so important to the elfin people. It is a way of life.” she quickly realizes. No wonder they are secretive of this she thinks to herself.
"I can certainly understand how losing this feeling would be hard. I'm just experiencing it for the first time, and am already quickly growing attached to it..."
“As am I, I would not wish to lose such a feeling.”
Emerging from the Cynalonian Embassy, you find yourselves in what appears to be a typical small town. The buildings are all constructed of wood and the streets are dirt. The street is fairly crowded with humans and elves. A few centaurs are spotted further down the street.
“Centaurs? They are beautiful.” she says as she catches a glimpse of them as they walk past. Hearing Laucian’s words Lia will ask, “What other languages do you know beside theres?" she asks curiously.

Seeing Sherwood struggle before her Lia, says, “One step at a time, Focus on one solitary object it may help.” she adds thoughtfully.
“Never in my wildest dreams would I have dreamed of such a place.” She can’t help but ask Lilia, “How old is it?”
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

And she's never actually seen a centaur before, so Kylie can't help staring at them. "Real centaurs... that's amazing... Do they live here?"

Nariya smiles at Kylie's wonderment at having seen centaurs for the first time. "We see them from time to time also," Nariya tells her, "but they typically shun heavily populated areas, like human towns and cities can be."

Laucian notes Kylie’s amazement and says, “Try not to stare, they do not care for it much. They are more or less our neighbors, Kylie. Many of us are versed in their language as well as other beings of the forest.”

"Unfortunately our sightings are more rare," Nariya reveals, "So not all of our people had the chance to learn their language, myself included."

Crossing the bridge is of little concern to Nariya, who does so easily. She stops though, seeing Sherwood having some difficulty. The concern for him is felt by all who are travelling together, but he makes it across without incident.

While the city is quite remarkable, the Sky Palace is astonishing to behold. Nariya's people use similar bridges and dwellings within the trees as needed, although they are not as grand as found here, but the Sky Palace is like nothing she has ever seen before.

"Are all elven cities like this?" Kylie asks.

"Our villages are much simplier in design, more towards practicality," Nariya replies. "Our forest is nowhere near as old either. This is quite breathtaking."

“I have read that Alfheim is only 550 years old. It was created as a place where the elves could trade with their human allies.”

Soon the Clan Elder leads up into the trees and away from the humans below. Lilia easily makes her way along the bridges, as they are very similar to those back in her home village. The Elf Maiden is impressed at the skill used to make the Sky Palace. It’s name fits for it truly is in the sky itself.

“While both the humans and the dwarves have kings, the situation with the elfin king is different. First and foremost, we elves are loyal to our clans. Our clans are our first and foremost thing of importance. Not even the Elf King comes before this. It is the Council of Clanmasters who decide who the King is to be when the time for a change comes. Valena handles the overhead bridges easy enough as do most elves. She’s interested in why they came here. Perhaps more information about the quest is to be had.

Only time will show whether that is really true and only time will mitigate my innate distrust of their kind. Maybe that will happen someday, and maybe not. We shall see."
“I’m not saying that you should trust every noble blindly. They are like everyone else. Some are good men and women, and others are not. The trick is figuring out if they can be trusted or not. Don’t forget that Jallarzi and myself are also nobles and you seem to trust us, so you’re already well on your way in the process.”

“That’s the way it usually works,” Sherwood laughs. “At times I feel that the higher powers are just leading me around to where I’m needed.”

Sherwood’s heard of the Sky Palace, but has never been there before. Of course it has to be high up in the trees that the elves love so much. The trek up the stairs isn’t easy as they are not made for humans, nor are the bridges and catwalks. The spans on the rope bridges are at odd distances for a human. To most elves, they would fall right in stride.
Lia wrote:Seeing Sherwood struggle before her Lia, says, “One step at a time, Focus on one solitary object it may help.” she adds thoughtfully.
“I’ll be alright,” Sherwood answers. “All of this wasn’t built with humans in mind. Give me solid ground any day.”

Finally, we reach the Sky Palace. Hopefully we’ll start to get more details about what is going to on to help fill in the puzzle.

Post Continued:

Sherwood and the elves have arrived in Alfheim hoping to learn more information about their quest. They arrive at the Cynalonian Embassy; there they meet the Ambassador and an Elder of Clan Grunalf.
When introduced by Jallarzi, Kylie smiles. "A pleasure to meet you. Is Elder an official title within the community, or just a form of address?" she asks.
"Just a form of address," Arloen answers. "Each clan has elders that assist in the day-to-day operations of the clan. We advise the Clanmaster and help instruct the young. We pass on our lifetime of experience."

With Arloen in the lead, the group heads out into the streets and then up into the trees overhead. It's another world up in the trees and numerous elves are passed as the group travels to the elfin Sky Palace where the Elfin King dwells. The Sky Palace was built and grown in-between three of the giant trees. While Arloen goes to see if the King is ready for you, the group relaxes on the porch of the Sky Palace.

Arloen reappears a few minutes later and gestures for you to follow him. "King Doriath will see you now. I know that some of you do not know of the elfin king, but Doriath has ruled for almost 200 years now. Before that he advised the previous monarch, King Celedryl, for a century. Before that he adventured extensively in the lands beyond our borders. It is said that Doriath knew the first Cynalonian King and played a part in his rise to power."

A pair of elegant double doors is opened and you're ushered before the King. There is no pomp and circumstance like there is among the humans. Upon entering the elfin king turns to greet you. He's a handsome elf of average height. (About 5'5".) While wrinkles are beginning to form on his face, he still seems physically fit. He is faired skin with light blond hair.

"Welcome to the Sky Palace," King Doriath says in greeting. "I am glad that you could make it."

"Ah, you must be Sherwood. You bear a strong resemblance to the first King of Cynalon. I've heard much about you in your short career. We are in your debt for the recovery of Thiondar's Library. It is because of your past aid to the elves that we've requested your involvement in this mission. We can trust you in our time of crisis."

Introductions are made and King Doriath gets down to the business.

"We were told about the rest of you by the Priests of the All Father that you would be under taking this quest. We all put our faith in the Father that he has chosen wisely for this mission. It was ten years ago when the Tree Keepers realized that the Trees of Life were dying. No cause could be determined, but eventually it was discovered that the source of the problem was the Mother Tree herself in the far off Sylvan Realm. She was dying and through the mystical link they all share, each Tree of Life would also die."

"The greatest elfin heroes were summoned for the task. Divinations were cast for when the Rainbow Path would appear so that they could be taken to the Sylvan Realm. Everything proceeded as expected. The heroes were taken away by the rainbow and were never seen again."

"Every year since, more heroes were sent across the Rainbow Path as we can only divine when the path appears once per year, and each time failure was met. We do not know if there is something wrong with the Rainbow Path or if they heroes failed. Their fate lies beyond our ability to divine."

"Word came through the Priests of the All Father that a new way must be tried and that a new band of heroes would be coming to make the attempt. But instead of taking the Rainbow Path, you will have to travel across the land to reach the Sylvan Realm. That is why we've asked your assistance Sherwood. You know these lands and can help them reach their destination safely."

"But we would not send you out on your journey without assistance. This has been provided by the Tree Keepers of Clan Feador. It is a star chart and with it you can find your way to the Sylvan Realm."

The king hands a parchment to the group. The elves can understand it and with it know that they can find the Sylvan Realm. The chart is incomprehensible to Sherwood. In addition to being a navigational guide, the chart shows the elfin constellations and their names for the standard twelve months. (You can view the star chart in the maps section of the World of Cynalon reference page.)

“It is also said by the Elders of Clan Feador, that the chart will also help you locate the Mother Tree, but they are unsure exactly how it will do so.”

“The current situation in the Sylvan Realm is unknown. What we do know is that back in the days before Clan Feador withdrew, the elves there had been betrayed by a human mage by the name of Moorkroft. He first befriended them and then later invaded with an army comprised of humans and orcs.”

“Surrounded by invading armies on all sides, the Elves hatched a desperate plan to save their homeland. The Mother Tree was hidden and most of the other elves departed over the Rainbow Path. Several hundred elves stayed behind to tend to the Mother Tree. One Keeper was to always be awake, while the rest were safe in a special slumber. Those elves ‘merged’ with the trees themselves to withstand the passage of time. When a new Keeper was needed, one of the elves would be released from their tree to carry on with the task.”

“We can only assume the invaders arrived, that they were surprised to find the elf lands empty of the elves and the Mother Tree gone. It was hoped that the forces of Moorkroft would eventually tire of the search and withdraw. This appears to not have been the case as the message to return has never been received.”

“We can also assume that since the Mother Tree is dying, that she is no longer being tended to by a Keeper. Perhaps the Keeper died before another could take their place, or maybe Moorkroft captured them. We just don’t know. Discovering the Keeper’s fate is now your task.”

“The Keepers here in the Elfholds know that the Mother Tree can only survive another year, perhaps two at most. But they do know that if the longer it takes to find the Mother Tree, the more difficult it will be to heal her. We have some additional gear to help you on your journey.”

The Elf King fishes out a pendant and offers it to Sherwood. “Here, this will make your time in the Sylvan Land. This is an Elf Pendant. When worn, its magical will transform you into an elf. This is necessary as the elves of the Sylvan Realm are probably not too receptive to humans these days. When removed, you will revert to your true form.”

“Do you have any questions?”

GM Notes:

Here’s the extra gear the King mentioned. Anyone who does not have Boots and Cloaks of Elvenkind can add them if they so wish. Each of you will be given a small bag of elfin iron rations. Unlike the human version, these are actually tasty, at least to elves, and will last you 10 weeks.

Now what?

Is this also true of the half-elves? Is their comprehension the same as the elves or less?

Laucian bows slightly in the presence of their appointed king, “Greetings, Milord. I am Laucian Nailo.”

He soon the listens to how the Elves new about such a quest. It is soon learned that they have known about this for sometime!!!!

He begins to unwind the information given to him and the speaks,
“Surrounded by invading armies on all sides, the Elves hatched a desperate plan to save their homeland. The Mother Tree was hidden and most of the other elves departed over the Rainbow Path. “Milord, If these elves hid within the trees what would become of them if the trees were cut down? Orcs are well known of stripping the land; Would the elves incased within the trees die if they were cut down? Perhaps this is why word was not sent.”

Kylie:
Nariya wrote:"It's probably because our forest isn't quite so large, plus I think the ones near us are a bit more nomadic due to the human populations not too far away," Nariya says in response.
Kylie considers this response. "That sounds reasonable, particularly if they are uncomfortable with humans. Not that I can blame them, really."
Nariya wrote:"We weren't very far away when we first met each other to undertake our quest," Nariya says. "If we ever have reason to head back that way, I'd be happy to show you."
"That would be wonderful, Nariya. There is so much of this world that I think would be interesting to see, and it would be fascinating to compare your home with here. Do you know if there are many other elven homelands?"

Kylie listens as Laucian responds to Nariya's and her own questions regarding the languages he knows. "That is quite a few languages. I think I would have trouble keeping them straight. Still, it might make sense for me to learn more, considering that there are so many languages in the world. I'll have to give some thought to that."
Arloen wrote:"Just a form of address," Arloen answers. "Each clan has elders that assist in the day-to-day operations of the clan. We advise the Clanmaster and help instruct the young. We pass on our lifetime of experience."

"Ahh... thank you. Considering the elven lifespan, that would be an immense amount of experience. I can certainly see the value in that."

It is not long before they are ushered into the Sky Palace and are introduced to the elven king Doriath. Kylie curtsies and speaks respectfully in this august company; perhaps it is the incredible age and experience that impresses her.

Doriath fills them in on more of the situation. That the Trees of Life are dying is new information, and certainly seems to be highlight the urgency of this mission. Also, there certainly appear to have been many teams sent to save the Mother Tree, none of whom have been successful.

"I don't know why we were chosen, King Doriath," she says, "but I'm sure the All Father must have had his reasons. For me, it is a priviledge to follow in my mother's footsteps, and I hope that this quest will bring me closer to the truth of her fate."

When the star chart is presented, Kylie examines it carefully, surprised to be able to make sense of it. Seeing it, she gains a measure of hope that they will reach their destination. As she looks it over, King Doriath continues to describe what they know and don't know of the situation in the Sylvan Realm and with regard to the Mother Tree. He also presents and amulet to Sherwood which he says will make the human mage an elf for as long as it is worn. Amazing.

"While this may sound silly, know you anything of the weather we will encounter in the Sylvan Realm? From what we have been told, it would seem to be far to the north, so that it may be much colder there than we are used to. It would be good to make sure that we have proper clothing for the conditions that we might encounter."

Though her own Boots are probably better for many situations, Kylie will accept a pair of the Elven Boots to go with her cloak. The rations are also very welcome, and she is curious to find out if the taste appeals to her as well.

=============================================
I'm sure glad Kylie understands the chart, because I sure don't!

Kylie wrote:"You can actually sense people? That's amazing, Lilia. Corellon's gift appears to be affecting us all in unexpected ways."
“That seems to be the case. It is rather disconcerting at times. Since I didn’t feel this way before, I am sure that once we are away from the Elfholds it will fade.”
Laucian wrote:"My clergy taught me quite a few. It is Ehlonna's intent that their be harmony among the woodland creatures, so many of her followers are trained in such ways."
The Elf Maiden is surprised that her clansman knows so many languages.

“I am verse in several different tongues as well. Learning orcish and goblin was to be able to understand our foes. I’ve also picked up the wizard’s tongue and can decipher the ancient scripts of the Elders. It may behoove us to learn what languages we can speak in case there comes a time where speaking in a different language would be beneficial. I am sure that all of us here speak elfish and the local human tongue.”

Lilia bows when introduced to the Elf King in respect and listens as he reveals what he knows. Lilia can certainly see that a new approach to this problem is needed since everyone else sent seems to have failed thus far.

She’ll scan the star chart when it is passed around to her. It seems simple enough to decipher and should lead us to our destination. Sherwood’s involvement in this is made clear. He is the one to help us make the overland journey to the Sylvan Realm.

Items are offered to us, but Lilia already possesses Boots and a Cloak of Elvenkind, so she will not take these. The elfin rations are taken.

“The prized Elfin Boots and Cloaks are another gift given to us by the Tree’s of Life. The cloaks are formed from carefully treated leaves, while the soles of the boots are made from treated bark. It is also said that other items can be made from the Trees by products, but these are rare. Items such as elfin swords, bows, and arrows.”

Lilia has no other questions for the Elfin King.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Lia

Lia follows the others into the Hall of the Sky Palace. Looking about her she takes it all in appreciating the new world around her. It is something she will treasure greatly. Not before to long a voice catches her ear and she looks down upon a handsome elf and soon becomes embarrassed for she slowly finds herself liking him.

Lia will bow low at her introduction to the King. She finds herself listening to the story and what the others have to say. But having little to say herself she merely remains quiet.

When the star chart is handed to her Lia examines it, at first the map looks complicated and she wonders how they will find it but strangely enough it slowly makes sense to her!!
“"Every year since, more heroes were sent across the Rainbow Path as we can only divine when the path appears once per year, and each time failure was met. We do not know if there is something wrong with the Rainbow Path or if they heroes failed. Their fate lies beyond our ability to divine.”
“MiLord, How many adventuring bands were sent?” she asks curiously. If they were captured their maybe allies with the Slyvain lands she guesses.

Later on its are offered to the party. Lia thinks on it for a second then speaks. “I would be honored to have such gifts.” Lia will accept the rations, cloak and boots from the King.
“Then perhaps we should all agree on learning one alternate language so that we may converse without wandering ears overhearing us. I know it is not the best of languages but perhaps One of woodland creatures languages or a different elfish would be suitable.”

“That is remarkable!!! A sword from wood!? I wonder how this feat is accomplished.”
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Nariya:

"That would be wonderful, Nariya. There is so much of this world that I think would be interesting to see, and it would be fascinating to compare your home with here. Do you know if there are many other elven homelands?"

"I know where a few other Sylvan villages are, Kylie. There is quite a tour I could give you through the southern lands," Nariya tells her. "A few places not on any map I know of, and I intend to keep it that way," the last being said lightheartedly.

Laucian thinks for a moment then answers, “ I’m fluent in Dryad, Pixie, Centaur and Brownie. Treant was far to difficult for me to grasp. In my travels I also learned Goblin and Orcish, It is always good to know one’s enemies as well as friends.” he states.

Nariya laughes lightly, "I found Treant to be fascinating. It was difficult but worth learning. I also speak Dryad. I have yet to learn any of the lesser races, but it makes sense to know their tongue."

“Then perhaps we should all agree on learning one alternate language so that we may converse without wandering ears overhearing us. I know it is not the best of languages but perhaps One of woodland creatures languages or a different elfish would be suitable.”

"That might indeed be good to do," Nariya agrees, hearing wisdom in both what Lilia and Lia suggest. "Any of them could work since we only have a few of us that know the same languages already. Treant is probably too cumbersome, but Dryad or Centaur might work well. Plus we should strive to learn Orcish and Goblin too, I think."

Introductions are made and King Doriath gets down to the business.

"An honor to meet you, King Doriath," Nariya says sincerely. "I am Nariya."

She listens close as the King explains things to them. She smiles to herself at the mention of the star chart, believing her abilities would allow for them to find their way, especially if Sherwood knows the way to get to the Sylvan Realm. Still, anything to help them along Nariya isn't going to turn down since time is important.

Laucian asks a good question and Nariya is interested in the response to this, if known. Kylie's question is not as important to Nariya as she is always prepared regardless of what weather they might face.

Nariya will accept the offer of the Boots and Cloak of Elevenkind as well as the rations. With what they should be able to hunt out, Nariya can not see a shortage of food regardless of weather conditions.
Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

Kylie wrote:"Of course, that's mostly because I have known you both for a long while," Kylie replies. "And even you I don't trust blindly, so I don't see that as likely to happen."
“You don’t trust me,” Sherwood says in mock surprise. “And after all we’ve been through together. You wound me.”
Kylie wrote:"There are those that believe that we're just pawns of the gods. I'm not entirely certain they're wrong."
“I’m not sure it’s as cut and dry as that,” Sherwood answers. “The real answer is probably a lot more complicated.”

King Doriath wrote:"Ah, you must be Sherwood. You bear a strong resemblance to the first King of Cynalon. I've heard much about you in your short career. We are in your debt for the recovery of Thiondar's Library. It is because of your past aid to the elves that we've requested your involvement in this mission. We can trust you in our time of crisis."
“A pleasure to meet you, your highness. I was unaware of my resemblance to Victor the First, as from my perspective that was a long, long time ago. I was glad to help in the matter of Thiondar’s library. It properly belongs to the elves. I will do what I can assist during this time of trouble.”
King Doriath wrote:"Word came through the Priests of the All Father that a new way must be tried and that a new band of heroes would be coming to make the attempt. But instead of taking the Rainbow Path, you will have to travel across the land to reach the Sylvan Realm. That is why we've asked your assistance Sherwood. You know these lands and can help them reach their destination safely."
“I know some of them. If the Sylvan Realm lies to the north and west from here, we’ll be crossing the lands of Vassa and that will not be pleasant. We’ll get there, somehow.”
King Doriath wrote:The Elf King fishes out a pendant and offers it to Sherwood. "Here, this will make your time in the Sylvan Land easier. This is an Elf Pendant. When worn, its magical will transform you into an elf. This is necessary as the elves of the Sylvan Realm are probably not too receptive to humans these days. When removed, you will revert to your true form."
Sherwood accepts the pendant and eyes in for a moment. “A form of Polymorph, I would assume? The magic just gives me the appearance of an elf. Thank you for your gift. We will do our best to complete this mission.”
I do what is necessary.

Valena will be polite when the King is introduced and listen quietly as the situation is explained. When offered, Valena will accept an Elfin Cloak and the rations graciously.

Laucian
The Elf Maiden is surprised that her clansman knows so many languages.

I am verse in several different tongues as well.
“I think that would be a fine Idea, though if we are ever unable to talk then it would be in vein. Perhaps we should consider a form of signing as well? One that we could create ourselves.”
Kylie listens as Laucian responds to Nariya's and her own questions regarding the languages he knows. "That is quite a few languages. I think I would have trouble keeping them straight. Still, it might make sense for me to learn more, considering that there are so many languages in the world. I'll have to give some thought to that."
“Not entirely so. Though I have accidentally spoken the wrong word at an inappropriate time.” he says with a sheepish smile. “It is a wise idea Kylie, you gain knowledge from it and a greater understanding of the beings that speak it.”

“I think Dryad would work best. They are solitary creatures and not readily found.” he adds thoughtfully. “Orcish is not the most difficult of languages,” he says with as smile, “Once you get past the fifty some odd words for war, battle and then the grunting; you have the jest of their Language.”

“Alas, I am not one of those many,” Valena will sheepishly admit. “I can only speak our native tongue and the local human language. While I too am a follower of Ehlonna, much of the focus of my training was archery. I’m sure that both Nariya and Laucian are better trackers than I.”
Laucian looks a bit surprised by this, though after seeing her fire her bow he is quickly sedated. “I was trained somewhat in tracking, it was one of my favorite studies.” he adds thoughtfully.
