Blackflame #9
A new day dawns in the Lost Valley. The night was chilly as was the night before, but not uncomfortably so. The explorers set out on a variety of tasks.
Outside the makeshift Temple of Eilistraee, Lia and Talen engage in sword practice. A small group of temple initiates watches them. They are all Priestess of Eilistraee in training and are a variety of races. They are a mixture of drow, orc, goblin, and half-elf. All appear to be in what would correspond to their mid-teens for their particular race.
To those who watch, it becomes clear that Lia is the better of the two with her blade. Lia uses a longsword, while Talen has a bastard sword. After the contest is over, a drow priestess uses the area to teach sword training to the initiates.
While Talen recovers, Lia gives Yusef a tour of the Temple. The building was a Hutaakan temple in the distant past. It must have been grand in its day with the elegant carvings and statues. However, time has worn them down and Nightmist elected to let the statues of the Hutaaka remain as respecting art and beauty is one of the Dark Maiden’s credos.
(As mentioned earlier, the Hutaaka appear human with the exception of jackal-like heads.)
The Temple itself is functional, but rather Spartan. Most of the prayers and ceremonies dedicated to the Dark Maiden take place outdoors under the stars, so there is no large gathering area in the temple.
Instead, the place seems more like a school than a place for devotions. The initiates are taught swordplay, how to play musical instruments, how to sing and dance, and how to cook. Other training, such as hunting skills is taught out in the field.
Yusef notes that the multi-racial trainees are all female and all seem pleasant and happy.
Talen takes over and shows Yusef the way to the village where the last of the Hutaaka live. Instead of following the ancient roads, Talen heads cross country following the cliff base. There is a minor trail here and it cuts travel time down considerably.
After a time the village comes into sight. It’s a bit different from the other ones you’ve seen in the Lost Valley thus far. There’s a ditch dug around the entire village, but it’s currently empty of water. An ancient wall surrounds the village, but the main gate is wide open. Talen will explain that the defensive features date back to when the Traldar and the Hutaaka were at war.
The village itself consists of nearly a dozen buildings. In the village square you see several of the Hutaaka. They do resemble the statues that you’ve seen. They are tall and slender, with jackal-like heads, but otherwise resemble humans with narrow hands and feet. Each of the Hutaaka wears long, somber robes, with the occasional addition of a simple piece of jewelry. The Hutaakan’s speak with a fluting, mellifluous tone that has a haunting, musical quality to it.
For the most part, the Hutaakan’s present ignore their guests. They’ll look you over and then turn back to whatever task they were working on. A small group of the Hutaaka is critiquing a newly carved statue.
(Yes, they are a dying race and they are more worried about art than anything else!)

Back in Nightmist’s village, Kylie and Lilia return to look around. The village is much like it was the day before. Near the temple several young priestess are receiving sword training from an older drow. A half-ogre pulls a large cart that is filled with firewood. He goes from home to home refilling their firewood bins. The pleasant smell of fresh bread baking comes from another house. A group of children—- drow, orcs, goblins, and half-elves play close by. The group is composed of both boys and girls.
All in all, everything looks peaceful and pleasant. Almost like a human or elfin village. The only real difference is that the races are different. Other than the ones practicing swordplay, you don’t see anyone carrying weapons. There are no guards either.
After a time, Kylie seeks out Nightmist. She’s not in her home, but you are given directions to the Temple of Eilistraee. There, you’ll find her instructing young priestess in singing. Nightmist’s voice is among the finest that you’ve ever heard.
Taking a break, Nightmist will come over to speak to you.
“Welcome! I trust you all slept well? Anything I can do for you?”
Nightmist will grow more concerned as she hears of Kylie’s tale.
“That is very unusual indeed. Elves very rarely get sick like that…”
“Those in the Elfholds are very particular on who they allow into their lands. It is truly an honor to be allowed to go there. I still dream of being able to do so, but hold out no real hope of doing so.”
“Getting back to your mother, I have not heard of her clan before, but I know very little that goes on inside the Elfholds. However, I would have way to help you learn information about your mother. The Dark Maiden allows me to cast Commune once per day. Using that spell, I can ask the goddess about your mother’s fate. My questions must be answerable by yes or no. Think of what you wish to ask and I will prepare to cast the spell.”
Now what?

Kylie wrote:Eventually, she will seek out Nightmist. "Excuse me, Nightmist, I was wondering if you might allow me a question?"
If Nightmist agrees, Kylie will explain her situation. "My mother was an elf known as Allurien Cortheledran of the Clan Aelrhed. When I was still young, she became sick and departed with some other elves to receive proper treatment. However, we were not allowed to accompany her and have never heard from her again.
"Since then, I haven't been able to learn anything of her fate. No elf I have spoken with has admitted even having heard of her clan. I am quickly losing hope of ever finding her, and am wondering if you might have any ideas of where I might turn?"
Nightmist will grow more concerned as she hears of Kylie’s tale.

As she circles her brther she remembers her training striking fairly quicker, Her brother seems to be getting better as well, she begins to have more trouble in finding openings within his defense but when she does she taps him with the flat of her sword. After a while the session is over, “You are getting better Talen,” She says with an easy smile,”And look no cuts this time.” she adds playfully. Seeing her brother a bit winded she asks Yusef, “Would you care to see the temple?”
Walking with her hands behind here she walks by his side answering any questions as well as explaining the building in general to her new friend.
After showing Yusef the temple classrooms Lia moves about the other priestess offering suggestions to improve their form. Then heads to a tree and sits against it, she sits and plays her music and is content for a time just enjoying her last day in the only home she has ever known.
Looking up from her playing she notices Kylie and Lilia merely walking among the village causing her to smile ear to ear. It seems that they are giving it a chance which gladdens her heart. She can’t help but look at the two as they observe her village and soon realizes that she will be in their shoes, in an unknown land. She is sadden by this but knows it is for the best.
Raising up she will approach the two women and ask, “Good morning , Would you mind if I joined you?” If they allow her she will walk with them and talk about anything they wish to speak of and perhaps introduce them to some of her neighbors and friends if they wish to speak with them.

Nariya:
Nariya listens as both Lilia and Kylie express their thoughts about all they have seen here in this unique valley. She is pleased at their responses, knowing now that they have been wondering about these mysteries themselves and thinking over their own reactions. Nariya is still of conflict herself, but it didn't seem as deep as theirs. Later on, Sherwood arrives with news of our departure and of something even more interesting.
“Lia and Talen have asked to come along with us and I am going to permit it. Now before everyone gets too worked up, hear me out. The twins’ mysterious grandfather is none other than my own grandfather, James the Red. I suspected this early on and Nightmist confirmed it last night. She spoke of the traditional appearance of the men in my family and Talen has those features to some degree.”
“In short, they are my own cousins. I’ve agreed to take them under my wing and out into the world with Nightmist’s blessings. They have quite a few interesting people to meet.”
Nariya is a bit shocked at the news, but is not entirely surprised. Nightmist is quite striking in her own way, and Nariya has heard about human males and how easily they are won over. "Sounds okay with me I suppose," she tells Sherwood. "I guess this is a happy time for you upon finding otherwise-lost relatives. Are they really ready to survive in a harsh world that may be prejudiced against them? I also ask because the orcs, ogres and others we meet on the road will not be the friends they remember from here."
Seeing as how the others all seem to have things to do and we will not be leaving immediately, Nariya will search about to try to find good stock to replace her broken spear. She does not know if they can craft a decent weapon here, but she did hear something about swords. If they have the ability to craft swords here, then a spear head should be simplier. She will approach either Lia or Nightmist on the subject, "Is there the ability to craft a weapon, more specifically a spear, in the village? I lost one in a fight on the way to discovering this valley and would like to replace it if it can be done."
If it can not be done, she will not worry, but venturing forth into unknown territory, she would like to be fully stocked with weapons if possible.

Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.
Sherwood
Sherwood:
“I work for the betterment of the kingdom in conjunction with Jallarzi and Sharadin. Sharadin is the King’s Magist-- essentially the King’s own personal wizard. Jallarzi is also a mage, but more academically inclined. She’s instructed several sorceresses over the last few years, Kylie included. Jallarzi tends more to dealing with politics and the nobility, so she uses her title. I tend to work more in the field and those I deal with may be put off by a noble title and not be as easy to deal with otherwise.”
Sherwood will mostly relax during the day and spend more time speaking to Nightmist when she is free to do so.
“I really haven’t given much thought to my own feelings upon learning that I have more cousins. Some of my family will accept them without question, while others are probably better off not knowing. Getting them used to the outside world is part of the reason I agree to take them along. Better to learn from someone they can trust instead of on their own. I think they’ll be alright in the long run.”Nariya wrote:"Sounds okay with me I suppose," she tells Sherwood. "I guess this is a happy time for you upon finding otherwise-lost relatives. “Our bloodline goes back all the way to the first King of Cynalon. We’re all part of the nobility. I simply choose not to go by Lord Sherwood is all. So, Jallarzi is of noble birth and hence called Lady Sallavarian. Our Uncle is Lord Sharadin and his daughters, who are about your age, are correctly called Lady Terry and Lady Sherry, although I’ve never heard them addressed that way.”Lia wrote:"Lady? She is of some notoriety then?” the shock of having more family is somewhat surprising though somewhat expected as Sherwood and her spoke briefly of it.

I do what is necessary.
New Beginnings
Kylie:
Kylie wanders through the village with Lilia. It is an eerie experience, and it is clear that the young half-elf is tense and apprehensive. At one point where there isn't anyone nearby, Kylie addresses Lilia. "This is all just so... creepy. I cannot get over how wrong it feels. Everything looks the way it has been described, but I still feel suspicious. I don't know if I could ever feel comfortable here or trust those who live here. Even the humans who live here are suspect in my mind.
"Yet some here are Sherwood's relatives. I have always trusted him and Jallarzi, and never been given any reason to do otherwise. Could his other relatives, including his legendary grandfather, James the Red, have gone so far astray?"
She shakes her head. "I just don't know what to make of it all. It's almost more than I can make sense of."

Kylie glances over at Lilia and then back. "Uhm, I guess so." She doesn't ask many questions of Lia, whose presense doesn't make her any more comfortable. She tries to be polite to those Lia introduces, though she's a bit stiff about it.Lia wrote:Raising up she will approach the two women and ask, “Good morning , Would you mind if I joined you?” If they allow her she will walk with them and talk about anything they wish to speak of and perhaps introduce them to some of her neighbors and friends if they wish to speak with them.
"We were told it was a magical malady that would require very special magics to cure or even relieve."Nightmist wrote:Nightmist will grow more concerned as she hears of Kylie’s tale.

"So I have been told. Because my father was human and I was raised in a human city, I was not allowed to accompany her."Nightmist wrote:“Those in the Elfholds are very particular on who they allow into their lands. It is truly an honor to be allowed to go there. I still dream of being able to do so, but hold out no real hope of doing so.”
Kylie nods. Turning away to let Nightmist conduct her preparations, Kylie contemplates the questions to be asked. After a while, she returns when Nightmist appears ready. "The first question is easy: 'Is my mother, Allurien Cortheledran of the Clan Aelrhed, still alive?' Other questions would depend on the answer to that. The second would be something like, 'Is she - or her body, if dead - still in the Elfholds?' Beyond that, it's kind of hard to predict the direction the questions would take."Nightmist wrote:“Getting back to your mother, I have not heard of her clan before, but I know very little that goes on inside the Elfholds. Yusef:
Yusef notes that Lia appears to be the slightly more skilled warrior of the twins. It's interesting that she uses a sword, as she is a priestess and few orders allow them. Perhaps the weapon has some significance to her goddess.
The next tour is even better. Talen takes him out of the town and along the valley wall to the village where the remaining Hutaaka live. The village has crude defenses that are obviously not currently in use.
Entering, they find the residents going about their daily lives. The Hutaaka appear exactly as depicted and described, though their coloring is interesting to see. Their clothing is simple and practical, with little in the way of ornamentation. Yusef finds listening to their voices to be delightful. They don't appear particularly friendly, however.
While being careful not to approach too closely or interrupt them, Yusef moves a little closer to the group discussing a new statue. This way, he can hear them easier and get a better view of the statue. It looks like a very nice piece, to him, though he has no expertise in art.
This makes a lot of sense, and Yusef nods approvingly. "From what I have seen, they will have an excellent teacher. I'm sure they will do your family proud."Sherwood wrote:“I really haven’t given much thought to my own feelings upon learning that I have more cousins. The tour of the temple proves quite interesting. There is no internal gathering place, as services are held outdoors. Quite a few classrooms are in evidence, however, as are private rooms for those living in the temple. The temple is decorated with beautiful art, which apparently was created by the Hutaaka. Yusef enjoys seeing the place, and looking in on a few classes currently in session with initiates.Lia wrote:As she circles her brther she remembers her training striking fairly quicker, Her brother seems to be getting better as well, she begins to have more trouble in finding openings within his defense but when she does she taps him with the flat of her sword. Post Continued:
The explorers wander the Lost Valley. Talen takes Yusef to the last Hutaaka village left here in the valley. They are a curious, somewhat isolationist race. They care more for their works of art than seemingly anything else. They are skilled artisans as a race and their works are most pleasing to the eye. After about an hour, Talen leads the way back to his home village.
Back in that village, Nariya seeks to replace her broken spear. She finds Nightmist crossing the main courtyard.
Nightmist leads you to a house near the front of the village. Inside is a small armory complete with racks of weapons and some suits of armor. The armor is predominately leather, but there are a few chain mail ones as well. In one corner there is a barrel that holds nearly two dozen spears.
“Help yourself, Nariya.”
Nightmist departs allowing Nariya to pick out which spear she would like.
Later that afternoon, Nightmist is ready to cast her Commune spell for Kylie. Talen and Yusef have returned by then. They along with Sherwood, Lia, Lilia, and Nariya watch from a safe distance. Rat is out looking around somewhere you would imagine. He’s been seen several times during the day, so you know he is safe.
Nightmist begins to chant in her musical voice and does a little dance as she invokes a granted power of her goddess. A soft glow of divine energy comes over Nightmist and she tells Kylie that she is ready to begin.
Unexpectedly, matching energy erupts from Lilia! It unerringly strikes Nariya, Talen, Kylie, and Lia. To the view point of Sherwood, Yusef, and Nightmist the others seem rigid and paralyzed.
“I don’t understand,” Nightmist says in disbelief. “My ability does not work this way!”

Those who were struck by the divine energy find themselves in a different place. They are in a sylvan glade deep within great elfin forest. Trees wider and taller than any of you, with the exception of Lilia, have ever seen surround you. The full-blooded elves sense that they are in a great elfin forest, while the half-elves can feel something special is here. Your movements seem slow and this all has a strange dream-like quality to it.
“Welcome children of my blood,” a warm voice calls out. The speaker sounds male and is known to Lilia.
Turning you see an incredibly tall elf (seven feet tall!) approaching. He possesses unearthly grace and beauty. Coming to a stop he casts his gaze on Lilia. All you look upon the elf with great awe and find yourselves unable to even speak.
“Forgive me daughter for using you in this way, but it was necessary. Since I touched you before, it was easier for me to do so again.”
Turning away from Lilia, the elf looks upon Kylie.
“Your mother, more properly known as Allurien Feador, was sent away on a mission of great import to the elfin people with others. They failed and those who followed also failed. A new approach is needed and you five will form the backbone of this effort.”
“The Mother Tree wilts and will die soon unless you can reach her. To help you restore the Mother Tree, I will impart a tiny bit of my essence into each of you, my children. It will be channeled into the Mother Tree and she will be restored to her full glory.”
The tall elf than holds his hand out and a small bolt of divine energy strikes each of you in turn. The energy is warm and more wonderful than anything you could imagine. Having imparted is divine energy the tall elf turns and begins to depart.
“Farewell my children. Until we meet again…”
The tall elf vanishes and the sylvan glade begins to fade. But before it does, Lia sees another figure off in the distance. She stands in the shadows of the tree and is just as tall as the male elf was. Long silvery hair streams out behind her on the soft breeze. She nods to Lia and then is gone. The vision ends for all.

Page Three
The elves and half-elves find themselves back in the Temple of Eilistraee in the Lost Valley. The force of the vision knocked each of you from your feet. Each of you feels changed from the vision and can feel a power inside you that you’ve never felt before.
Sherwood rushes to Kylie’s side, while Nightmist checks up on Lia and Talen. Yusef sees to Nariya and Lilia.
“What happened? Are you all right?” Nightmist asks, concern thick in her voice.
GM Notes:
Lilia will know the tall male elf to be Corellon Larethian, the Father of All Elves and the ruler of the Seldarine. Lia will know the female elf see spotted to be a manifestation of Eilistraee herself.
While the power of the Father of All Elves is within you, it will change you all slightly. Half-elves will have their full elfin heritage opened up to them. In game terms, those half-elfin abilities that are less than those of a full elf, will now function as if you were a full elf. For instance, half-elves normally have a 30% resistance against sleep and charm. It will now function at 90% like a true elf. Furthermore, you will feel the mystical connection to forests that full elves do.
The Full Blooded elves will find themselves even more in tune with their surroundings then they were before. Your natural elfin abilities are now amplified. Your 90% resistance mentioned above is now 100%. You can now see farther and all of your senses are sharper.
Thus begins the Quest to find Kylie’s mother and save the Mother Tree!

Lia
Later on in the afternoon, Nightmist begins to prepare a spell for the use of Kylie. Her and several of the others stand nearby watching as they begin, Nightmist’s frame becomes empowered by their deity, Most unexpectedly Lilia is empowered by the same energies as it strikes Lia.
The next thing the half elf notices is being in a strange and different place, One that she has never seen before in her short life. She looks about to see a forest of grand nature and a feeling of this place being special washes over her.
Lia wonders just whom this elf is standing nearly 7ft tall though his grace an beauty are unmatched by anything she ever laid eyes on. She listens carefully as the being speaks of Kylie’s mother as well as her mission. Before long It invokes its divine energy and gives each of us a part of it.
Afterward he says farewell and begins to leave, the surrounding area begins to fade and Lia notices a figure within the woods, a figure who also stands 7ft tall and her hair is long silvery hair flows about the breeze she nods then she is gone….
She awakens with her grandmother looking more worried then she has ever see her.
“What happened? Are you all right?” Nightmist asks, concern thick in her voice.
“I dunno, I think I’m okay,“ as she looks to the others seeing similarly on the ground. “We were in a glade and an exotic elf spoke to us and gave us Divine energies of some sort and spoke of saving the 'Mother tree' Though I know not whom he was. Then I thought I saw you, but it couldn’t have been…. I think it was Eilistraee herself!! She had long flowing hair and she was so beautiful, Not that you aren‘t Beautiful grandmother… She nodded to me then was gone…….” She looks up to her grandmother hoping that maybe she can explain some of it to her.

New Beginnings
Kylie:
Noting that the rest of their little band have gathered around, Kylie watches intently as Nightmist prepares her spell. She still doesn't entirely trust the drow priestess, but her need to know outweighs her distrust. The spell is cast and Nightmist begins to glow softly.
Suddenly, before the first question can even be asked, energy spikes outward from Lilia to the other elves and half-elves in the room! The next moment, they all seem to be in another place. Kylie notes that Lia and Talen are there along with Nariya and Lilia, but Nightmist is not.
They appear to be in a lovely forest glade, but Kylie can sense that there is something special about this place. The appearance of an unusually tall and beautiful male elf grabs Kylie's attention. He speaks for a moment to Lilia, his voice a wondrous symphony of sound before turning to Kylie.
"Wait! Please!" she calls out as the vision fades away and her body slumps to the ground, but it is too late. She senses Sherwood moving near, but for a moment she feels only like crying. To be teased by such a small bit of information without really getting any answers...
After a moment, Kylie collects herself. "I'm okay, Sherwood. We had some sort of vision, where a tall, inhumanly beautiful elf spoke to us. He talked of a Mother Tree, which others - including my mother - had failed to save. Apparently, the task of doing so has fallen to us.
"I don't know who the elf was, but he gave us each a bit of what he called divine energy, so perhaps he was a god. He also said my mother's true name is Allurien Feador, but I don't know what that means. Is that name significant somehow? And where are we to find this Mother Tree that we are supposed to save?"
Kylie feels different somehow, but doesn't know what to make of it. This leaves her feeling confused and uncertain.

I had intentionally left Kylie's mother's fate open as a possible story 'hook'. It's great to see you building on that!
BTW, would the name Allurien Feador mean anything to Kylie?

Questions by the dozens swarm through Kylie's mind as he speaks, but she is unable to voice them. Then, though she cannot otherwise move, Kylie smiles blissfully as the warmth spreads through her body.Corellon wrote:“Your mother, more properly known as Allurien Feador, was sent away on a mission of great import to the elfin people with others. Yusef:
Disappointingly, the Hutaaka show no interest in speaking with him, so he has little opportunity to learn anything of them. Thus, they leave not long after for the walk back to Nightmist's home. Perhaps he will have an opportunity to return someday and learn more of them.
Not long after they return, Yusef joins the others to observe Nightmist's casting on Kylie's behalf. He suspects that she will use a spell that he has heard about which allows her to ask questions of her diety. Kylie looks nervous and excited at the same time.
The casting seems to go fine for a moment, then is suddenly interrupted by energy shooting out from Lilia to ensnare Kylie, Nariya, Lia and Talen! Even Yusef isn't fast enough to prevent it, and he wouldn't know how if he could. He can only watch helplessly as the five stand as though frozen.
Moments later, the effect ends - whatever it was. Those affected collapse to the ground. Yusef rushes over to Nariya and Lilia. "Are you ladies all right? Have you been injured?" he asks. "What happened?"

Yusef shares Nightmist's alarm. He has never heard of a spell like this, and Lilia didn't appear to be casting anything. "What can be happening?!" he asks urgently, hoping for some answer from Nightmist or Sherwood, but they appear as confused as he feels.Nightmist wrote:“I don’t understand,” Nightmist says in disbelief. “My ability does not work this way!”

They seem to be allright, though they have been given quite a vision. It appears they have a new duty to persue. It would seem that the Blackflame Cult will have to wait a little longer; hopefully, they won't grow too powerful in the interim.Kylie wrote:After a moment, Kylie collects herself. Nariya:
“I can help you”, Nightmist says with her ever-present smile. “No need to craft one as we have spears. We are not foolish enough to live here without means to protect ourselves.”
"I did not mean to imply that you were foolish, but so many years of peace can dull the heartiest warrior's edge," Nariya replies.
It's not a big armory by any means. Even the most peaceable sylvan villages have more than what she sees before her. She almost feels bad in taking from the meager assortment. She selects a single spear, as close to her own as possible, and turns away from the rest.
Later in the evening everyone gathers for some sort of ceremony or spell. Nariya has seen the priests of her village do castings, but she usually didn't pay much mind to them. Suddenly something leaps from Lilia, and begins striking her fellow travellers. we have been betrayed! Nariya thinks as she is struck, Lilia and Kylie were right!
At first she doesn't believe her eyes, but Nariya soon begins to realize that the forest they now find themselves in is ancient and majestic, beyond anything she has ever seen. It takes her breath away.

Nariya can not take her eyes off the beauty of the male elf before them. It is only then that she realizes that none of the non-elves are with them. She briefly wonders why Nightmist isn't present then, but this male elf's words take all of her attention.
He talks about Kylie's mother and the inability to save the Mother Tree. Nariya desperately tries to remember her teachings of the elven lineage, but she is suddenly struck by divine energy and it warms her in a way previously unknown.
Moments later, the effect ends - whatever it was. Those affected collapse to the ground. Yusef rushes over to Nariya and Lilia. "Are you ladies all right? Have you been injured?" he asks. "What happened?"

Lilia:
Later on, Lilia and most of the others gather to watch Nightmist cast her Commune. Lilia feels that she should be there for Kylie’s sake. She’s too emotionally involved when it comes to her mother that she might be deceived by Nightmist’s words.
However, that does not come to pass. Strange, but familiar energy comes out of Lilia’s body! Unexpectedly, she finds herself in a great elfin forest. The feeling is wonderful!
She’s head the voice of the Father of All Elves before and this time she’s not so overwhelmed by the vision. Still, she’s in awe of the creator of her race and cannot find the words to speak.
The All Father speaks and tells of finding and healing the Mother Tree. A tiny portion of his divine power is invested into us and the feeling is marvelous. Lilia’s senses feel as if they’ve been masked before. She can feel and see things she couldn’t before!
The vision ends and Lilia finds herself on the floor. Having been through this before, she’s quickly on her feet and not as flabbergasted as her companions were.
Then a thought hits her. The All Father even included the half-elves in his plans. Called them also Children of his Blood. Amazing! Many elves look down on such half-breeds as they are not true elves, but the All Father does not! If they are good enough for the All Father to except, then there is no logical reason Lilia should not do the same.
Even more remarkable, the half-drow where included in the vision and given the same divine energy to carry out this task! Lilia can only conclude that the All Father even still thinks of the drow as still part of his children. She can’t even begin to comprehend the depths of his sorrow over what his wayward children have done. Again, if he finds Sherwood’s cousins worthy, then there is no reason for Lilia to treat them any other way.
Lilia’s drawn away from her musings. The half-elves have trouble comprehending just what transpired. Even Nariya seems somewhat at a loss. It’s not a complete surprise, as her own clan does not have a Tree of Life. Recalling the stories told by the elders and what she’s read, Lilia will try to explain just what is going on.
“We have all been blessed greatly. The one who spoke to us was no less than Corellon Larethian, the Father of All Elves. He spoke to be me earlier when we fought against the Dark One in the swamp. Undoubtedly, some of his essence must have remained within me as he foresaw this need coming.”
“It is written that the first elves were created by the All Father on this world some 700,000 years ago. Those elves were pure and innocent. Time passed and they learned the ways of the forest and were the first to make use of magic. As a gift to his children, the All Father gave us what is now called the Mother Tree. It is a Tree of Life, a magical tree that is sentient. It is the Tree of Life that makes an elfin forest so special. It allows all the other trees to grow much larger and taller than anywhere else in the world.”
“Some 50,000 years ago, the first great elfin civilization came to be. They dwelled in a great elfin forest that had been created by the Mother Tree. They named this place Evergreen. It was place of great beauty and splendor. Or rather it was.”
“With the passing of years, other races came into being, humans among them. They built a great civilization that was known as Blackmoor. These humans triggered a great disaster and the climate changed. The lands of Evergreen grew colder and it began to freeze. Earthquakes and other disasters occurred and many elfin lives were lost.”
“Having little choice, Evergreen was abandoned. The Mother Tree was uprooted and prepared for a great journey as our ancestors were forced to find a new home. The journey took decades, but they did find a new home. They settled in a place they called the Sylvan Realm. It is said to be far to the north and west from where we are. The Mother Tree was replanted and it worked its magic, turning what had been an ordinary forest into a great elfin forest. This was about 20,000 years ago.”
“More years passed and the elves become more like what they are today. Eight great clans were formed in the Sylvan Realm. My clan, Grunalf, dates back to this time as do Clan Chossum, Clan Erendyl, Clan Long Runner, Clan Mealidil, Clan Red Arrow, and lastly Clan Feador.”
“The elves recovered and flourished after the Blackmoor disaster. However, the Sylvan Land was not as large as Evergreen was. There were mountains to the south and east, and ocean to the west. Even worse, other races grew closer and closer to the new homeland.”
“With space growing short, King Dorwynn decided that the elves must move again if they were to survive. Seven of the eight clans agreed to depart for a new home, while Clan Feador remained in the Sylvan Realm to tend to the Mother Tree. Using great elfin magic, King Dorwynn creates a great rainbow path that the seven elf clans crossed over. They arrived in what is now called the Dorwynn Elfholds to our north. This was over 10,000 years ago.”
“Each clan took with it a branch of the Mother Tree. These in time grew into new Trees of Life. That is why that first Tree of Life is called the Mother Tree, as the ones in the Elfholds are its daughters. These daughters of the original Tree of Life took to their new land and a new great elfin forest came into being.”
“New clans were formed and some of them moved to find their own lands. Such as Nariya’s Clan Callarii, but they did not have their own Trees of Life.”
“Some 600 years ago, most of Clan Feador used the rainbow path to reach the Elfholds. I am told that they fled from the Sylvan Realm from invaders. It is said that some remained behind to protect the Mother Tree and that they had hid it from these invaders. This caused many of the other elf clans to show disdain to Clan Feador for failing to protect the second elfin homeland and the Mother Tree. Many changed Clans or changed their names to hide this shame.”
“If the Mother Tree dies, then it will affect all the Trees of Life as they are mystically linked together. The great elfin forests will wilt and die. There like will never been seen on this world again. We elves will survive, but a vital part of our heritage will be lost! This takes precedent over everything else! We must leave immediately!”
“I agree completely,” Lilia will say. “While this might be a sanctuary for some, it is not one for us. Thankfully we will soon be away from here.”Kylie wanders through the village with Lilia. Even the humans who live here are suspect in my mind.”
“I’m afraid that I do not have an answer to that question. You’ve known Sherwood far longer than I have. Until I was introduced to him to go with him on his mission, I had only heard of him by way of reputation. I see no reason to distrust him know, but there is no reason to fully trust his new cousins either.”Kylie wrote:"Yet some here are Sherwood's relatives. I have always trusted him and Jallarzi, and never been given any reason to do otherwise. Could his other relatives, including his legendary grandfather, James the Red, have gone so far astray?"
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Lia listens to the others as they speak by she becomes transfixed on Lilia’s words the most as she explains what has transpired before their eyes.
“
“Corellon Larethain, “ She says more to herself then anyone she adds thoughtfully as she slowly puts what she witnessed into perspective. It would also explain why Eilistraee herself was there to emphasis it’s importance to the half elf.
Forgoing her Grandmother’s help she will raise to her feet and look to Lilia and the others, “It is clear to me that we must go and swiftly for time is against us. But here do we begin?” she asks the others.

“
Lia Listens to Lilia’s tale of the history of the tree itself and of the different clans, one of which Kylie is related to. Does she have some intricate part to play in the quest remains unseen. She does have one question that she can’t help but voice. “If this mother tree is so important then why didn’t some of the other clans guard it as well?” She asks aloud without thinking,We have all been blessed greatly. The one who spoke to us was no less than Corellon Larethian, the Father of All Elves. He spoke to be me earlier when we fought against the Dark One in the swamp. Undoubtedly, some of his essence must have remained within me as he foresaw this need coming.”

New Beginnings
Kylie:
As they recover from the vision, Lilia speaks at length regarding what she knows of elven history and how it relates to the vision. She provides a lot of information and it will take Kylie a few moments to digest it all. Kylie is astounded at the news that it was apparently Corellon Larethian himself who spoke with them - assuming it wasn't some kind of trick.
"So if I understand you and the vision correctly, my mother is actually a daughter of this Clan Feador? And this clan has been disgraced by their inability to protect the Mother Tree? Therefore, she changed her name to hide the fact that she was part of that family?" Kylie doesn't like the sound of this; the elves already have enough reason to look down on her, now to find out that her mother was a daughter of this disgraced clan will only give them more reason. She loves her mother, but is starting to really wish that her mother had been more honest with her. And she still doesn't even know whether her mother is still alive or not.
Kylie nods. It is good to know that someone else is as uncomfortable here as she is.Lilia wrote:“I agree completely,” Lilia will say. “While this might be a sanctuary for some, it is not one for us. Thankfully we will soon be away from here.”
"I agree, despite my confidence in Sherwood," Kylie replies. "I think I will just have to take a wait and see approach while keeping my eye on them."Lilia wrote:“I’m afraid that I do not have an answer to that question. You’ve known Sherwood far longer than I have. Until I was introduced to him to go with him on his mission, I had only heard of him by way of reputation. I see no reason to distrust him know, but there is no reason to fully trust his new cousins either.”

"I do agree with Lilia and Lia that we need to pursue this, and do so as soon as possible. It sounds like we will need to travel to this Sylvan Realm where the Mother Tree is. My guess would be that the only way to do so would be to go to the Elfholds. Of course, that raises the question of whether they will allow any of us - other than Lilia - in or provide us with the means to travel there."Lia wrote:Forgoing her Grandmother’s help she will rise to her feet and look to Lilia and the others, “It is clear to me that we must go and swiftly for time is against us. Yusef:
And Lilia does have quite a tale to tell, full of history and elven lore. More amazingly, it seems the visions were a message from the chief god of the elves. That certainly explains why he and Sherwood were not included, though Nightmist's exclusion leaves him puzzled.
Lilia is up quickly and talking, and Nariya says she's fine - if a but shaken by the experience. Yusef breathes a sigh of reliefNariya wrote:"What?" Nariya stammers, "Um, yeah... I feel.. fine." Thoughts rush through Nariya's head as she tries to make sense of everything that just happened. Hearing Lia and Kylie's words, Nariya becomes rooted in her thinking that this quest is too important to delay. She looks towards Lilia, hoping she may have a few answers that Kylie voiced.

"I think Kylie raises a valid point. If the route to the Sylvan Realm is through the Elfholds, we will have a hard time getting there. It's possible that they might allow Nariya and Lilia - and perhaps even the famous Sherwood - in, but they certainly won't allow me anywhere near their lands, and may not give the twins any friendlier of a greeting. Perhaps there is some other route we can take?" Like the others, Talen is surprised and in awe over what just occurred. It takes him a long time to overcome the wonder that he feels and the strange things his senses are telling him. As he comes back to Earth, his grandmother is there.
“I think I’m okay, grandma. Just very confused. I mean, why would the Elfin Father pick us for this task? It’s a very great honor, but I don’t know if I’m ready for something of this magnitude.”
Otherwise, Talen doesn’t have much to add to the discussion. He feels very much out of his league at the moment.

“It might also explain why they said she was sick and you were not told the truth. This is a very personal elfin thing. We would not discuss it with non-elves, although I seem to have just done that now. Anyway, if she succeeded then she had been cured of her malady. Otherwise, she didn’t survive. Either way, her true mission was concealed.“
“That is possible,” Lilia concedes. “But if she was skilled enough to be sent on this guest, it is also possible that the name change had more to do with her settling down to raise a family for a short time. We elves tend to look at things differently than most other races. You might consider her marriage to your father something that would last a lifetime. But to we elves, it might only seem like a few months of time spent, not many years. She might have just wanted to raise you and not be bothered by the outside world.”Kylie wrote:"So if I understand you and the vision correctly, my mother is actually a daughter of this Clan Feador? “That may not be the case,” Lilia speaks up. “Remember, the Father of All Elves said that a new approach is needed, so that tells us that the traditional methods have failed thus far. Legend says that the appearance of the Rainbow Path is varies wildly. Predicting its exact appearance is almost impossible. Perhaps we are not meant to take the Rainbow Path, but rather travel normally to the Sylvan Realm.”Kylie wrote:"I do agree with Lilia and Lia that we need to pursue this, and do so as soon as possible. Sherwood:
Sherwood listens intently to Lilia’s historical account of the elves and their Trees of Life. He’s only heard bits and pieces of this before; so much of her account is new. It does shed a great deal of light on the current situation.
“Based on what you told us, I would be inclined to agree with Lilia to a point. It does seem that a new approach is needed and that we non-elves may not be allowed to go along on the quest. Regardless, we still need more information before we can decide on a proper course of action. Therefore, let’s continue on with our original plan. I’ll teleport us all to Jallarzi’s estate. I have some contacts in the Elfholds that I can speak with. Perhaps they’ll fill in the rest of this story.”
“If this is agreeable, then we might as well leave immediately. Well, as soon as we find Rat at any rate.”
Sherwood is relieved as the elves and half-elves come around from whatever it was that they went through. “A Mother Tree? I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of such a thing. It seems that you’ve been selected to go on a great quest.”Sherwood wrote:After a moment, Kylie collects herself. "I'm okay, Sherwood. We had some sort of vision, where a tall, inhumanly beautiful elf spoke to us. He talked of a Mother Tree, which others - including my mother - had failed to save. Apparently, the task of doing so has fallen to us.
“Feador is one of the eight elfin clans,” Sherwood explains. “I’ve noted that they tend to be over-achievers, as if they are trying to make up for something.”Kylie wrote:"I don't know who the elf was, but he gave us each a bit of what he called divine energy, so perhaps he was a god. He also said my mother's true name is Allurien Feador, but I don't know what that means. Is that name significant somehow? And where are we to find this Mother Tree that we are supposed to save?"

I do what is necessary.
New Beginnings
Kylie:
At least her mother must have been held in some regard to have been chosen for the quest. But what does that say about them? They are all young and largely untried, nor have they really established themselves as any great heroes. "So why were we chosen? Surely there are more qualified elven heroes for such an important mission?"
Putting actions to words, Kylie heads off toward Nightmist's kitchens in search of her diminutive friend. Once she finds him, she'll make sure that they both collect their things before rejoining the others.
If they were seen as being in disgrace among the elves, that would be likely. Kylie had never thought of her mother as someone that others might look down on. It's a sobering thought.Sherwood wrote:“Feador is one of the eight elfin clans,” Sherwood explains. “I’ve noted that they tend to be over-achievers, as if they are trying to make up for something.”
Tears come into Kylie's eyes as she listens to Lilia's response. She makes it sounds as though having a family and raising a daughter would not have been very important to her mother. Worse, Kylie had long ago mostly given up her mother as lost to her, but this experience had allowed a sliver of hope that she might see her again. Now, Lilia assures her that her mother must be dead as they did not succeed in the mission.Lilia wrote:“That is possible,” Lilia concedes. “But if she was skilled enough to be sent on this guest, it is also possible that the name change had more to do with her settling down to raise a family for a short time. Kylie can make some sense of this. "So, Lilia, just how far away is this Sylvan Realm? From your description, I got the impression that it would be an extraordinarily-long journey."Lilia wrote:“That may not be the case,” Lilia speaks up. “Remember, the Father of All Elves said that a new approach is needed, so that tells us that the traditional methods have failed thus far. Kylie is cheered by the thought of continuing on to Jallarzi's home. It's been awhile since she's seen her mentor, and it will do her spirit good to see her again. "I'm ready to go whenever the rest of you are. As for Master Finder Rat, I'm confident that we'll find him near the food. If you like, I'll go see about rounding him up."Sherwood wrote:“Based on what you told us, I would be inclined to agree with Lilia to a point. Post Continued:
After Nightmist's spell goes awry, she goes to check up on her grandchildren.
"I never imagined something like this in my wildest dreams," Nightmist continues. "My grandchildren being sent to the Sylvan Realm. Enjoy this time, for you may never see the likes of it again. The chance to see the Elfin homeland and the wondrous forests that the Trees of Life created is more than I could ever had hoped for."
Turning to Kylie, Nightmist will add, "Do not give up hope on your mother just yet. Just because she failed in her mission does not automatically mean that she is no longer alive. Have faith and do not give into despair. I have the feeling that things will turn out better than you expect they will."
Rat is quickly located as he's helping himself in Nightmist's kitchen. Goodbyes are said and Sherwood teleports away with Rat, Lilia, and Kylie. He'll return for the rest of you in a few minutes.
In what seems like an instant later, Sherwood and passengers reappear inside Jallarzi's estate. It's quickly learned that the Lady of the house is not home. Instead she's up in Corunglain and that she left word for Sherwood to go there as soon as he is able. The letter goes a little bit into the situation up there. (As shown in the New Frontiers Posts.)
"Fortunately, I had memorized extra Teleports just in case. It seems that our destination is a bit further north than I originally expected."
Sherwood fishes through his Bag of Holding and brings out a book of pictures. He fishes through the book until he finds a picture of the designated Teleportation arrival point in Corunglain. Once located, Sherwood casts another Teleport and you're whisked away once more.
This time, you arrive in a cold chamber inside the Duke's Fortress in Corunglain. Guards are near by, but a Lady Teris Penhaligon calls them off as she recognizes Sherwood. Teris and Sherwood converse for a few moments. Sherwood then turns back to Kylie, Lilia, and Rat.
"Lady Teris here will show you to your guest quarters. It appears that the Guardians are here as well, so you have some friends to catch up with. I'll be back shortly with everyone else."
Stepping away, Sherwood casts yet another Teleport and this time departs by himself.
Back in the Lost Valley, Sherwood reappears almost half an hour after he left.
"Sorry for the delay, but there's been a change plans. There's been a great deal going on in the outside world in my absence. Forces from the Broken Lands invaded the City of Corunglain. Most of her nobility have been kidnapped. The old king has stepped down and passed the crown on to his son. I've been summoned to appear before the new king. So our destination is Corunglain instead. Jallarzi and Sharadin are already there."
"If there is anything we can do to help," Nightmist speaks up, "please do not hesitate to ask."
"I'll keep that in mind," Sherwood promises. "At the very least this trip will put us even closer to the Elfholds then Elcadan would have. Everyone must gather close to me and be in physical contact."
Once that is done, Sherwood draws his longsword from its sheath and holds it up into the air. Those who haven't seen it before will be surprised to find that the metal is whitish in color. Holding it aloft, Sherwood calls out, "Lifeshield, take me to Corunglain!"
The sword complies and you're gone from the Lost Valley.
GM Notes:
As you've might have guessed, you guys are going to be appearing in the New Frontiers post! Use this post to wrap up any conversations that started here and took place before you left. Post your actions for arriving in Corunglain over in New Frontiers #61.
"I can assure you that no offense was taken," Nightmist answers. "We live here with the possibility of outside attack occurring at almost any time. The Dark Maiden teaches us to be ready to defend ourselves and if necessary to throw back the tide of evil. Skill with a sword is a must in our faith. All priestess are taught how to fight and defend herself. We are as prepared as we can be."Lia wrote:"I did not mean to imply that you were foolish, but so many years of peace can dull the heartiest warrior's edge," Nariya replies.
After Nightmist's spell goes awry, she goes to check up on her grandchildren.
"As Lilia said, you have been greatly blessed my child. I am so proud of you!" Nightmist gives Lia a warm hug.Lia wrote:"I dunno, I think I'm okay," as she looks to the others seeing similarly on the ground. "We were in a glade and an exotic elf spoke to us and gave us Divine energies of some sort and spoke of saving the 'Mother tree' though I know not whom he was. Then I thought I saw you, but it couldn't have been.... I think it was Eilistraee herself!! She had long flowing hair and she was so beautiful, Not that you aren't Beautiful grandmother... She nodded to me then was gone......." She looks up to her grandmother hoping that maybe she can explain some of it to her.
"I do not know why you five in particular were chosen, but I put my faith in the Father of All Elves. He would have not given you this great honor if you thought that you were going to fail."Kylie wrote:"So why were we chosen? Surely there are more qualified elven heroes for such an important mission?"
"It sounds like it's on the other side of the continent," Sherwood interrupts. "It is dangerous to travel to the Northwest from here. That's the path through the lands of Vassa and we'll find no safety there. We'll find a way to make the journey to the Sylvan Realm. That I promise you."Kylie wrote:Kylie can make some sense of this. "So, Lilia, just how far away is this Sylvan Realm? From your description, I got the impression that it would be an extraordinarily-long journey."
GM Notes:

Lia
Lia returns her grandmother’s hug , and smiles at her. “Thanks, you don’t know what that means hearing that from you,” she replies.
“Nor do I. We will see this to the end, together.”
Sherwood then takes some of the others away via Teleport spell and Lia looks around at Talen and says, “Take a good look; we will not see home for quite sometime. Her gaze falls to her grandmother and she gives a half smile. I will miss you greatly!” she says while giving her a embrace.
Sherwood takes considerable time in returning which worries her. Perhaps he has had second thoughts about us?
Lia merely listens as their destination has changed from Jallarzi’s mansion to some city named Corunglain. She smiles as she realizes that a portion of her extended family will be there. She just hopes that there is time to meet them!
“Goodbye Gram!” she says to Nightmist as Sherwood pulls forth a sword of white metal. She takes hold of Sherwood and soon is whisked away.
"As Lilia said, you have been greatly blessed my child. I am so proud of you!" Nightmist gives Lia a warm hug.

The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Nariya:
Listening to the further telling by Lilia, as well as Sherwood, Nightmist and the others, this is definitely a big change in plans for what Sherwood originally asked when he sent her word in need of her pathfinding skills. they'll be glad they have me along now more than ever, she thinks, it doesn't seem like they really have any idea where they're going.
Sherwood teleports away, and Nariya shakes her head at more magic being used. An overland journey would be much more relaxing and educational to all involved. How can she learn the secret trails and paths of the world if all they do is arrive everywhere in an instant?
Time drags on and everyone begins to wonder what's going on. He does manage to arrive eventually though.
Back in the Lost Valley, Sherwood reappears almost half an hour after he left.
"I thought I was going to have to track you down again," Nariya says to Sherwood, who quickly explains what the delay was about. He urges everyone to gather close and uses his sword to teleport everyone away. Nariya can only wonder what this Corunglain is going to hold in store for them...

Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.
New Beginnings
Kylie:
Kylie notes Yusef observing her and scowls. Still, she doesn't say anything outlandish, so perhaps she's maturing.
Soon, they reach Jallarzi's home. Kylie is disappointed to find that she isn't there. Still, Kylie spent several happy years here, and there is a warmth to the place that lifts her spirits. It doesn't take them long to find out that Jallarzi has been summoned to Corunglain, and that Sherwood's presence is required there by the new king as well.
Moments later, they arrive in the city of Corunglain. Kylie has never been this far north before; she can feel a chill in the air that is greater than where they were earlier. It doesn't take much looking around to tell that there was a great conflict here recently, and the soldiers appear to be in a state of alert.
Fortunately, one of the people waiting where they arrive recognises Sherwood and keeps the soldiers from attacking them. Sherwood introduces the woman quickly and then departs to retrieve the others.
"Lady Teris," Kylie says with a curtsy. "I'm sorry but I don't have much experience with nobles or courtly ways. I'm Kylie Lanthorn of Elcadan. Pleased to meet you."
After Sherwood returns with the rest of the group, he departs to join a meeting with the new King. Meanwhile, Kylie follows Lady Teris to their assigned quarters. For some reason, wandering around in this huge fortress is leaving her with a desire for the open forest...

Kylie pauses to consider. A god. The greatest god of the elven people, and he chose them. Whatever his mysterious reasons, he must have some reason to believe they might succeed. This realization, however strangely it may have come about, causes something to shift inside of her. "I pray that you are right, Nightmist," she says, with the first inkling of true respect to the drow woman, "and I pray that we are truly up to the task."Nightmist wrote:"I do not know why you five in particular were chosen, but I put my faith in the Father of All Elves. He would have not given you this great honor if you thought that you were going to fail."
Kylie nods. "I will do my best to hold onto that hope. Perhaps that will help to carry me through the challenges that are to come."Nightmist wrote:Turning to Kylie, Nightmist will add, "Do not give up hope on your mother just yet. This information is quite new to Kylie; she had never heard much about the rest of the continent outside Cynalon and the lands which border it. In truth, Kylie has never heard of this Vassa, but it sounds like a dangerous place. Still, she has faith that Sherwood will find a way. "I'm sure you will, Sherwood. Between you and Jallarzi, I have no doubt that you'll find some way to get us there. Of course, should we survive, we'll have the problem of getting home again, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it."Sherwood wrote:"It sounds like it's on the other side of the continent," Sherwood interrupts. Travelling Ever Onwards
Yusef:
Much of the discussion revolves around the elven peoples and their mission. Thus, it doesn't really involve Yusef, as his path appears to lead in a different direction even though he knows not yet what that direction will be.
Perhaps he's fooling himself, or perhaps this experience has had a subtle effect on Kylie. Either way, she seems to be handling herself a little differently. If it's true, then this is a positive change in Yusef's view, which he hopes will continue in the future.
Some time later, after everyone has collected their gear and is ready to travel, Sherwood teleports away with Kylie, Lilia and Rat. Surprisingly, he doesn't come right back. It isn't long before concern appears on the faces of those who were left behind.
"I would have thought Sherwood would have returned by now," Yusef says. "I hope they are allright. Perhaps their plans changed in some way."
There is a palpable sense of relief when Sherwood reappears. It seems their plans have changed, as the old king has stepped down, and Sherwood has been called to appear before the new king in Corunglain. Yusef smiles at Nariya's chiding of the mage, but says nothing.
Amazingly, Sherwood calls on his sword to transport them to Corunglain. The next instant, they are standing in a fortress far away. A bite in the air proclaims that they have travelled far to the north.
Sherwood introduces them to a local nobelwoman, by the look of her, then runs off to his meeting with the king. "Yusef ibn Nerita bint Falawi Al-Rashid, Lady Teris," he says with a bow. "I'm very pleased to meet you."
