Crucible #47 - "Displays of Power"
Roll Call: Backlash & Tesla
While making their way to Caliente, Backlash and Tesla have run afoul of a group of superpowered gang members calling themselves the Maulers.
Tesla hovers overhead, surrounding by an arcing field of energy. She just avoided a wide blast of fire from the lone female among the Maulers: a Spanish beauty in black leather going by the name of Bella Fuego. Spinning, Tesla retaliates with another electrical blast. Once more her aim is true and Bella Fuego is sent flying backwards. She doesn’t rise after the assault.
This action draws the ire of the last of the Maulers, a man in a Hispanic man in a cloud gray bodysuit with white accessories. He also hovers above the ground; his cape buffeted on the light winds that race around him.
“Bella!” the man cries out in anger. He turns back towards Tesla and glares at her. “Now you face the full fury of El Tormenta!”
The sky darkens overhead and you can feel a storm rolling in far faster than normally would be possible. Fierce winds begin to buffet the area around Tesla, but so far her electrical field keeps them at a bay.
Down on the ground, Backlash and Maul get up close and personal. Backlash lands a punch to the face of Maul and much to his surprise, Maul is unmoved by the blow! He grins at Backlash and lands his own punch. ‘Lash feels this one and is thrown backwards nearly ten feet!
The force of the blow stuns Backlash for a moment, but he quickly shakes it off. As he gets to his feet, he can feel himself being energized by Maul’s punch. His muscles ripple and grow in size!

Roll Call: Blackout
Over at the Shelter Island docks, a flying man has come in search of the Guiding Light. He calls himself Brother Brimstone and declares that he will strike down anyone who interferes with their mission with his ‘purifying fires’.
Blackout warns the officers to take cover. While this is going on, Brother Brimstone unleashes his powers with a scream of rage. A ball of fire is tossed and it streaks over the ship and towards the docks next to it. One of the DEA cars is hit and it explodes with a tremendous boom! Hunks of metal and debris are flung in all directions and most of the men in that area is thrown to the ground.
While Brother Brimstone is marveling at the destruction he wrought, Blackout acts. His rod is thrown into the sky and catches Brimstone on the side of his face. The fiery zealot falls from the sky and plunges into the bay water along side of the ship. The water around his landing spot bubbles and boils from the extreme heat!
Enraged, Brother Brimstone explodes out of the water and rises into the air once more. His gaze is firmly locked onto Backlash!
“Come on!” he yells. “Lets see how tough you really are!”
Fiery energy begins to gather around the hands Brother Brimstone…
Roll Call: Menagerie & Serena
While making their way across town, the pair has spotted an unconscious woman hurtling through the sky! Menagerie changes course and speeds after the woman. She’s no longer rising into the air and begins what is sure to be a fatal plunge!
The distance between you and your target rapidly dwindles, as does her distance to the ground. After what seems like an eternity, Menagerie in the form of Major Star gets close enough for Serena to reach out and grab the unconscious woman. Serena draws the woman into her arms, as Menagerie tries to pull out of her power dive.
The street seems only inches away as Menagerie pulls up. She flies down the street, weaving around abandoned vehicles. Finally her flight begins slow and Menagerie touches ground with her passengers.
Serena lays the woman down on the ground and you get good look at her. She’s an attractive young woman with shoulder length raven colored hair. She wears a green colored robe that’s tied closed with a green sash. It looks like the kind of robe you’d wear while training for karate. It falls just below her waist. Matching green high-heeled ankle boots finish her outfit.
She does not look familiar to either of you and you can see some bruising on her face.

Roll Call: Eldrich, Frostbite, Goldstar, and the Purple Phlox
Inside Horton’s Plaza, the heroes get a momentary rest in-between crisis’s.
However before the Phlox can speak further, something comes out of the rift. At first it’s a ball of blackness that rapidly grows into a man-shaped being sheathed in blackness.
Fearing another assault, the heroes attack!
Eldrich casts another Sunglare spell but he cannot tell if it has any effect, as the black figure does not react to it. Goldstar adds a Photon Blast she doesn’t get any reaction either.
Frostbite gets some results as his ice ram slams into the black figure and sends it across the summoning area. The Phlox steps in and a blast of purplish fire leaps from her Crystal Headed Staff. It strikes the black figure and for the first time he cries out in pain! For a brief moment, the darkness around the figure fades revealing what lies beneath.
You see a man in a green body suit with golden accessories. What really draws your attention is what he holds in his right hand. There sits a gleaming emerald jewel about the size of a softball! Eldrich and the Phlox can sense the magical energy of the strange gem.
The darkness covers the costumed man once more and he rises. Without a word, with a sound, naked power erupts from the man! A wave of black energy is flung out in all directions and no one can escape it. The blast takes a lot out of Frostbite and Eldrich, but they remain coherent. Goldstar seems dazed from the attack, while the Phlox lies unmoving on the floor.

“I have an idea”, the Phlox admits, “but it is risky. I can try to absorb the magical energy, which in turn will boast my own magical powers. While that is going on, a man-sized black hole opens up nearby and something comes through. Standing less than ten feet away is a large, muscular man in green and white costume. There’s no mistaking Shamrock!
“Alright boyo’s”, Shamrock says as he smacks his right fist into his left palm. “I hope you’ve got your insurance paid up!”

On the Negation Of Evil Magic
Eldrich Arcane
Eldrich has his doubts about this mage's ability to absorb evil magic without corrupting herself in the procces,but the issue never comes to the test. The human-shaped shadow draws their attention and seems to shrug off all attacks but one. That one attack reveals a human holding a large emerald stone of magic power in his hand.
The counter-attack is fierce, laying low half it's opposition in one stroke!
The quick reponse has failed. Now the measured response must be employed.
"Frostbite, I will attempt to negate the stone's power. You must engage the foe in battle, draw it's attention. Our comrades are not yet able to defend themselves."
Eldrich will cast Dispel Magic upon the stone [assuming it can be seen] or against any incoming magic if it can't.
And perhaps we shall learn of what we face here, the man - or the stone...

Being slower than most super's Flux will wait to see how things shake out before acting. If Shamrock evades Tilt he'll go at him. If Scorpia drops in he'll take her instead. It will depend on what he sees. Note: still in small size.

Getting up he shakes the birds of the punch and focuses on Maul yet again. Feeling the familiar strength return from getting hit he let’s out a smile of his own.

He will move in and Beat Maul to a pulp
Putting full force into his punch the Mauler holds his ground and doesn’t even move!!! Worse off he merely sits smugly as he retaliates. Stunned by his lack of effectiveness he doesn’t even bother to defend himself as Maul’s punch knocks him back a good 10 feet.Down on the ground, Backlash and Maul get up close and personal. Moving to catch his rebounding rod, Blackout hears the water boiling. He shudders at the thought of what kind of horrid burns would have to be endured if he were to be hit by that knid of heat.While Brother Brimstone is marveling at the destruction he wrought, Blackout acts. His rod is thrown into the sky and catches Brimstone on the side of his face. The fiery zealot falls from the sky and plunges into the bay water along side of the ship. The water around his landing spot bubbles and boils from the extreme heat!
"Not good..." Blackout says, letting the words trail off and he concentrates on his enraged foe. If he has time, he will hurl his rod once more in the hopes of putting Brimstone down this time. He is fully prepared to go full evasion should Brimstone be the quicker of the two, as Blackout has no desire to be hit even once by the super-heated zealot.Enraged, Brother Brimstone explodes out of the water and rises into the air once more. His gaze is firmly locked onto Backlash!
“Come on!” he yells. “Lets see how tough you really are!”

Tesla lets out a sigh as the Spanish beauty hits the ground in a very unladylike fashion after being tagged by her electrical blast. "You guys should invest in a training room, or maybe just a better diet.." Tesla mouths off, drawing the ire of yet another Mauler.
“Bella!” the man cries out in anger. He turns back towards Tesla and glares at her. “Now you face the full fury of El Tormenta!”

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Foundry...

"As for whether the Vigilant are a group that you should carry out good acts with, that is up to you. However, you may find that the definition of good here is different than what you are used to. It might be wise for you to learn something of our world before you condemn it or try to change it."
Flying as fast as she can, Major-Menagerie plunges toward the falling woman. They are getting dangerously close to the street when Serena is finally able to pluck the woman from the air. Lily struggles to pull up, but finds that gravity and momentum have a firm grip on them. At the last moment before they become a smear on the pavement, she's able to level off. It still takes time and a fair bit of dodging obstacles before Lily is able to safely land.
Now that they have stopped, Lily can finally get a good look at the woman. The face is unfamiliar to Lily's poor knowledge of metahumans, but her outfit implies a knowledge of martial arts. From the looks of her, she has taken a fair beating.
"Serena? Can you heal her? We need to meet up with our friends, but we cannot leave this woman like this."

Roll Call: Backlash & Tesla
The struggle against the Maulers continues! Tesla sends another electrical blast at El Tormento, but is wide of her target.
The fury of El Tormento’s storm continues to gather. Dark clouds overhead thicken and a steady rain begins to fall. The sound of cracking thunder detonates in the air and a stroke of lightning explodes from the sky. The stroke streaks past Tesla and strikes a street light post before dissipating.
Backlash rushes Maul once again and strikes with his newly augmented strength! The result, however, is the same. Maul seemingly shrugs off the damage and remains unmoved!
“Is that the best you can do, punk,” Maul taunts.
Maul retaliates and throws his own punch. This one misses Backlash completely.

That covers phases 4 & 5. Not much happened on either side this time around.

At the Shelter Island docks, Brother Brimstone has just emerged from the bay waters after being sent there by Blackout. He is NOT happy!
However, Blackout acts first and his rod is thrown once more. The weapon strikes Brother Brimstone squarely in the stomach and causes him to double over in pain. The force of the impact sends him further away in the sky.
Now enraged beyond words, Brimstone comes flying back in and hurtles a fireball. Blackout ducks away from it. The ball bursts into flames upon impact and that part of the deck is singed. Some of the deck continues to burn.

The mystery woman in green has been rescued from falling to her death. Menagerie touches ground and releases her passengers. Serena gently sets the woman down on the pavement.

“You waste your time, mageling,” a voice calls out from nearby. Eldrich turns to discover that the speaker is the ice covered Black Paladin. “You do not comprehend the power you are facing now. Negating the stones power is beyond anyone’s ability. I thought the magic of the rift was familiar and I was correct. What you face is the man who used to be known as Borealis. He was bounded to the Greater Emerald Eye of Azog and in turn was used to create a gateway between the dark realm of demons and the real world. This magical tear must have opened up a portal to that place that Borealis used to re-enter our world. He must be stopped before the innumerable hordes of shadow demons come forth to lay waste to this world! Release me and I will assist you. I would not see this world devoured by these fell creatures!”
While this is going on, the blackness covered Borealis turns towards the rift and gestures towards it. As he does, the rift grows wider and the blackness beyond seems to move!
Frostbite sends a hail of icy shards at Borealis, but he seems to shrug them off.
In the background Goldstar regains her wits while the Purple Phlox starts to move.

Outside the Caliente Research Labs, Terror Unlimited has struck! Mindslayer has mentally assaulted the Scarlet Sabre from a distance. While that is going on, Black Hole has caused Shamrock to appear in their midst!
Tilt does as Flux instructs and rapidly advances on Shamrock. She hits him with her ‘Topsy-Turvy’ power and the effect is immediate. Shamrock remains on his feet and moves around as if he’s drunk.
While that is going on, Starguard rushes to the Scarlet Sabre’s side.
“Scarlet!” he cries out while he fumbles with her gadget belt. But before he can do whatever it is he is attempting, Scarlet stops moving and appears to have passed out from the mental onslaught.
“Mindslayer’s not here,” Starguard says as he stands back up. “She can find minds and attack them sight unseen!”
Clearly angry over what just happened, Starguard turns and as he does an energy mace forms in his hands. He rushes the staggering Shamrock and smashes him with the weapon! Shamrock is hurtled backwards nearly thirty feet from the attack.
“We can’t waste any more time!” Starguard announces as he turns back to Flux. “We got to act or they’ll just pick us off and then no one will be able to stop them!”

Far better to consult with the local mage first-and activate the second use of the amulet of Warding.

Eldrich casts the Giant's Cudgel anyway as much to gauge the effect as anything else.

“WOOO…” Goldstar utters as she shakes off the latest attack. “Wow, I’m getting really tired of being knocked around like a leaf in the wind!”
Rising up into the air, Goldstar tries to figure out what’s going on. She sees Frosty closing in on the man who is all black while Eldrich is talking to the man in the black armor. (Gee, lots of blackness around here!)
Since her Photon Blast didn’t do much, Goldstar will step up the intensity. Pointing her hands at the black figure she’ll cry out “Ion Blast!”

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Foundry...

It occurs to Lily that there may be a faster option for reaching her destination, now that she isn't carrying anyone. Digging into her memory, Menagerie does her best to mimic the appearance of Tilt-A-Whirl and races off. After a few moments, if she thinks she can make better time either as herself of as Major Star, she will change appropriately.
As she travels, Lily calls in to Edgar. "I'm heading on toward Caliente, and hope to be there soon. I just left Serena to care for an injured woman. Blackout is back at the docks helping the authorities clear up a matter involving smugglers."

"Shoot... see you're distracting me.. less talking, more defeating!" Tesla says, frustrated that she missed this last Mauler. El Tormento takes advantage and his summoned storm starts growing more intense.

Blackout:
Judging the range, Blackout tries to gauge if he could leap from the highest part of the ship and reach where Brimstone is hovering. If he believes he can, he will uncap one end of his throwing rod and hurl it in a spinning arc at Brimstone, hoping to entangle him with the line. Then he will make his way quickly to a point on the ship where he can leap at Brimstone and hopefully grapple with him. Blackout will, of course, drop darkness around himself during that grappling period.
If this isn't feasible, then Blackout has little choice but to just keep hurling his rod at Brimstone, hoping for a knockout blow while he keeps himself mobile and hopefully unburned.
Ducking out of the way just in time, Blackout reaches out and catches his rebounding rod once more. He's pretty resilient Blackout thinks solemnly, and he isn't talking anymore. In downtown San Diego, Backlash and Tesla continue to engage the Maulers. Tesla unleashes another electrical blast and this time hits El Tormento. The lightning strike sends the weather manipulator flaying backwards nearly thirty feet!
However, it’s not enough to put him down. El Tormento starts to get up, but Tesla doesn’t give him the chance. A second lightning strike puts him down for sure.
Down on the ground, Backlash and Maul continue to go at it. ‘Lash takes another swing at Maul but misses. The follow up punch does hit and Maul is finally sent flying backgrounds! He lands ungainly some 25’ away.
However, it’s not enough to take out Maul. He’s up on his feet again and leaps at Backlash! ‘Lash sidesteps the assault and Maul lands behind him, ready to renew their fight.

Out on Shelter Island, Blackout continues to grapple with the enraged Brother Brimstone. Using his rod once more, Blackout hurtles it once more. This time, his climbing line plays behind the projectile. The far end of the rod spins around Brimstone, wrapping him up in the line.
While Blackout tries to figure out how to get elevation so that he can close on his target, the authorities on the dock act. Having gathered their wits after the car explosion, they draw their weapons and fire on Brother Brimstone!
Bullets sail through the air and several are on target. The heat around the fiery man mostly melts the bullets away, but several of them still hit him. Brimstone’s body flinches backwards and begins to plummet from the sky again. He’s falling towards the water and Blackout’s rod line faithfully follows!

Brimstone appears to be unconscious from being hit by the bullets.

Roll Call: Eldrich, Frostbite, Goldstar, & the Purple Phlox
The situation inside the summoning area of Horton’s Plaza is deteriorating again. The living eclipse that Borealis became since being merged with the Greater Emerald Eye of Azog walks the Earth once more! Days ago, Devilspawn attempted to summon a Nether Lord to Earth. Her attempt was thwarted, but a small opening did occur, linking the summoning area with the dark dimension where the Old Ones had been imprisoned.
Since that time the rift has grown wider and the dire magical energy of that dimension spilled out into our world. Those in tune with the magical forces could tap into this energy and amplify their own powers.
Finally, the rift grew large enough for Borealis to come forth at the direction of the Greater Eye. Can it only be a matter of time before a second invasion from the Children of Azog begins?
While this is going on, Black Paladin makes his case for being released to assist in this crisis. Eldrich questions the Dark Knight’s sincerity.
While this is going on, the heroes attack! Eldrich casts his Giant Cudgel spell but misses his target. Goldstar connects with her Ion Blast, but it appears to have no effect. Frostbite generates icy boxing gloves around his hands and tries to punch Borealis, but strikes nothing solid.
Pointing her staff at Borealis, the Purple Phlox unleashes another blast of purplish-fire. This gets noticed by Borealis who screams in agony as the magical fires burn him. He falls to one knee and seems to be disorientated.
While that is going on, a creature bursts forth from his dark chest! It’s a small misshapen beast obscured in a cloak of darkness. Occasionally you can see flashes of teeth and claws. The beast tenses, as if preparing to leap and lets out an unearthly howl.
“Unless you are prepared to deal with millions of those creatures, then release me!” Black Paladin calls out. “I will not see their ilk run domain over this world! Don’t be fools!”

Finally, the rift grew large enough for Borealis to come forth at the direction of the Greater Eye. Can it only be a matter of time before a second invasion from the Children of Azog begins?
While this is going on, Black Paladin makes his case for being released to assist in this crisis. Eldrich questions the Dark Knight’s sincerity.
“I don’t know!” the phlox calls out. “This is my first meeting with Black Paladin. I just don’t know enough about him!”"Purple Phlox! Is what he says true? What can you tell us of his honesty?"
While this is going on, the heroes attack! Eldrich casts his Giant Cudgel spell but misses his target. Goldstar connects with her Ion Blast, but it appears to have no effect. Frostbite generates icy boxing gloves around his hands and tries to punch Borealis, but strikes nothing solid.
Pointing her staff at Borealis, the Purple Phlox unleashes another blast of purplish-fire. This gets noticed by Borealis who screams in agony as the magical fires burn him. He falls to one knee and seems to be disorientated.
While that is going on, a creature bursts forth from his dark chest! It’s a small misshapen beast obscured in a cloak of darkness. Occasionally you can see flashes of teeth and claws. The beast tenses, as if preparing to leap and lets out an unearthly howl.
“Unless you are prepared to deal with millions of those creatures, then release me!” Black Paladin calls out. “I will not see their ilk run domain over this world! Don’t be fools!”

Roll Call: Flux, Tilt-A-Whirl, and Starguard
Things are getting desperate out at Caliente. The Scarlet Sabre has been struck down and Shamrock was teleported into the heroes midst. Tilt sends Shamrock on a ride that disorientates him.
Flux decides to go in immediately before they can be attacked again. Starguard complies and both he, Flux and Tilt-A-Whirl vanish from the grounds. Were anyone able to see it, Scarlet is teleported away by Starguard too, but to a different location for her safety.
A second later, the group appears in the main research lab where the Fast Breeder reactor is being tested. The reactor itself is stored inside a heavily shielded area for protection and is remarkably small for what it can do. The inside of the reactor room is a radiation hazard area and require safety gear to enter. Typically any work done inside the reactor room is down with remote controlled waldo’s mounted to tracks that crisscross the rooms ceiling.
Outside the main reactor chamber are foot-thick observation ports. These can be reached by a metal walkway that spans the reactor chamber.
Several smaller chambers can be accessed from this main area. There is the control room where the reactor is monitored and the waldo’s can be operated. There are several offices as well.
Starguard’s scans indicated that hostages appeared to be gathered inside one of the offices, while Terror Unlimited were closer to the reactor.
As Flux, Tilt, and Starguard get their bearings, they immediately spot the other three members of Terror Unlimited. All three were on the metal walkway outside the reactor containment dome near one of the observation ports.
The newest member of the group was the man called the Black Hole. He was all dressed in black and had a stylized symbol of a black hole on his chest outlined in white.
The other two were the women of Terror Unlimited and they were easily the most dangerous. The undisputed leader of Terror Unlimited was Scorpia. She attractive, standing about 5’6” with long brown hair. She wore a black bodysuit with long red boots and gloves. On the back of her hands were her most dangerous weapons. Sheathed claws could spring forth and they could slice through steel. Dart launchers on the back of her hands could deliver a variety of payloads.
The last woman was even more attractive. She was a small slip of a girl, barely even five feet tall, wearing a skimpy satiny purple costume that left her well-tanned legs bare. Mindslayer had long brown hair and a large oval cutout drew attention to her impressive chest. Short white gloves, high-heeled ankle boots, and a white sash finished off her minimal clothing.
Spinning to face the heroes, Mindslayer calls out, “Company boss!”
Scorpia turns around and casually announces. “Kill them.”

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Foundry...
Menagerie:
Menagerie's idea seems to pay off as she streaks through the city in Tilt-A-Whirl's borrowed form. Despite her own ability to run fast, Lily is almost aghast at how fast she is moving in this form.
In mere moments, she arrives at her destination. She can see the Young Champions jet landing not far away. Her first inclination is to run over and greet them, but she realizes that she might get in the way as it lands.
The jet touches down and Gladiator leads some of his team off the plane, but Lily also notices movement in another direction. A big guy dressed like the Jolly Green Giant comes toward her, yanking a tree from the ground in the process!

"No, I'm sure you do that just fine all by yourself," she calls back. Menagerie starts to race toward him, then suddenly - while still well out of reach with the tree-club - shifts into the form of the smallest flying bug she can manage and flies straight up. Backlash
“What’s the matter Mauler? Did I hurt your Ego?!” he calls back at Maul. The anger is apparent as he leaps towards ‘Lash whom quickly sidesteps his attack.
“Let’s say we finish this!!” To Maul, to Tesla he will say, “Don’t get to comfy up there Ill be done with pretty boy here in a minute!” He goes in and Hammers Maul with punches, hopefully he is near his breaking point!
Backlash let’s out a laugh as he hears this, “If that’s your Idea of a date,” Dodging a punch from Maul, “Then Im seriously gonna have to take you out and show you a good time!” Finally a second stroke lands as Maul goes flying back 25 feet."Sure, you've shown me around town, we've been working out and you even helped me pick out clothing for the Monster, why wouldn't this be a date?"

He yells to the others, “ If He swears that he will help then Free him!!! And if he goes back on his word I will gladly show him where to shove his word!!! We can use all the help we can get and We aint cutting it!!!!!Free him!!”
If Borealis tries to widen the gate Frosty will step in front of his line of fire hopefully taking the blow, If he does not Frosty will remain defensive one cause of the monster and second of Borealis.

Flux has been feeling the potential for another effect of his powers involving mass increase at a distance. Having multiple targets in sight and being more than a bit desperate he will try to spread his density over to Terror Unlimited to weigh them down. If he needs to get closer first he will do so, remaining small sized.
"Tilt, drop the short woman in purple. 'Guard, cork the Hole Maker. I've got dibs on the clawed one."
I hope this works. Our one advantage here is a lack of info on their part about us.
Whether or not the density works Flux will still close on Scorpia to strike as flight will be shut off for the density to activate.

Blackout:
The unexpected gunfire startles Blackout for the briefest of seconds. He realizes that Brimstone is plummeting for the water, apparently unconscious. Blackout will make a leap to grab his swing line trailing behind his rod. If successful, he will try to brace himself to be able to pull Brimstone up after he hits the water. If he misses the line, Blackout will dive into the water until he can reach it, and then work to pull Brimstone up to the surface. Either way, Brimstone is hitting the water first!Bullets sail through the air and several are on target. The heat around the fiery man mostly melts the bullets away, but several of them still hit him. Brimstone’s body flinches backwards and begins to plummet from the sky again. He’s falling towards the water and Blackout’s rod line faithfully follows!

Tesla:
Backlash let’s out a laugh as he hears this, “If that’s your Idea of a date,” Dodging a punch from Maul, “Then Im seriously gonna have to take you out and show you a good time!” Finally a second stroke lands as Maul goes flying back 25 feet.
Tesla laughs in response, "Don't set your expectations too high, you might not survive the fall." Her response seems playful....
In downtown San Diego, Backlash and Tesla continue to engage the Maulers. Tesla unleashes another electrical blast and this time hits El Tormento. The lightning strike sends the weather manipulator flaying backwards nearly thirty feet!
However, it’s not enough to put him down. El Tormento starts to get up, but Tesla doesn’t give him the chance. A second lightning strike puts him down for sure.
"Finally!" Tesla exclaims. "You about ready to wrap up yours, hun? I've done all the heavy lifting in this one again it seems," she continues her playful banter with Backlash. She will remain airborne, ready to use another electrical blast if Backlash can't put this last Mauler down.
