Blackflame #8

After a quiet but chilly night the explorers are on the move again. Nariya takes her usual position at the point with Lia and Talen close behind. Sherwood, Yusef, and Rat come next, with Kylie and Lilia bringing up the rear.

The journey to Byxata, the Hutaaka village that Nightmist calls home, will take all day on foot. Fortunately the trek is an easy one as the enter way is paved. Travel passes quickly on foot and the group move deeper into the Lost Valley.

More abandoned villages like the one you spent the night in are passed. Right after the third such village, the road forks and the half-elves indicate that the right hand fork is the one to take. A worn stone bridge leads you across a small river that feeds the lake in the middle of the valley.

The road continues onward and leads you along the outskirts and then into a small forest. While nowhere near as majestic as an elfin forest, it does give the elves a more relaxed feeling to be among the trees once more. Lunch is enjoyed among the trees with a view of the lake.

Continuing on, the road forks once more and again the right hand fork is taken. Another stone bridge is crossed and now you’re passing around the western side of the lake. So far there has been nothing suspicious on your journey. No indications of anything like an ambush or signs that anyone else lives in the valley.

That all changes about an hour later as yet another village comes into view. Unlike the other villages on the eastern side of the village, this one is inhabited. No armed guards are spotted and it doesn’t even appear that they have anyone keeping watch. The group is almost at the village before they are even noticed.

Along the way in to the village, you passed by fields were numerous groups were grown. The fields are bare right now as winter is just around the corner.

Much to your surprise, the inhabitants of the village are mostly goblins. They move about the village carrying out their business. A metal worker is busy forging plow shears while others work to repair damage to their meager homes. Goblin children run in the streets playing, seemingly without a care in the world. The majority of the adult goblins are female. Very much out of place in this goblin village, is a towering half-ogre who helps out with his great strength by lifting and carrying things.

While the goblins eye the explorers warily, none make any threatening motions. Upon seeing Lia and Talen, some will wave and call out greetings, while a few will approach to exchange good wishes personally. The majority of those you see do not even carry weapons.

The group passes out of the goblin village without incident. The paved road leads on and will take you directly to Byxata. The shadows are growing long as the village comes into sight. Much like the previous village, farmland is passed through to reach it.

As you near the village, you notice a mixture of races among its inhabitants. More goblins are seen, as well as orcs and even a few bugbears. Half-orcs are common along with half-ogres. A few humans are seen along with several drow elves. No one that you see makes any threatening moves towards the group. Most seem more curious of you, then hateful.

Lia and Talen lead the way into town and are greeted by many of their friends. They wonder why they have returned so soon after setting out on their journey, although the sight of the adventures answers that questions.

Byxata sits at the base of a cliff wall and many of the buildings are built into the cliff. One of these buildings serves as the makeshift Temple of Eilistraee. Word has reached the temple ahead of you and a pair of drow females comes forth as you approach. Like all drow, their skin is jet black in color.

“That is Nightmist”, Talen will say indicating one of the two women. He’ll then rush forward to hug his grandmother.

“The other is Sabal”, Lia adds. “She’s like our great-grandmother.”

Nightmist is not like any drow you’ve ever heard about or seen. Her style of dress is plain, almost peasant-like. Her holy symbol of Eilistraee is plainly visible dangling from her neck. She stands just barely five feet tall and is exotically beautiful. Her hair is silver in color and falls to her ankles. What is most striking is the bright, broad smile on her face.

Sabal is a bit more conservative and will eye the adventures as if trying to figure them out.

After a quick conversation with Lia and Talen, Nightmist will come closer.

“I bid you welcome to our valley”, Nightmist will say in a melodic voice. She approaches each of you and welcomes you personally, her smile never wavering. (If rebuked, Nightmist makes no mention of it and just moves on to the next adventurer.)

“Please, come and join us. We were just getting ready to sit down for our evening meal. From what my grandchildren have told me, we have much to discuss.”

GM Notes:

At last you’ve reached Nightmist! As noted in the post, no one has made any threatening moves towards the group. Most just seem curious, more than anything. Hardly any weapons are seen either.

Now what?

Talen:
“Poisonous!” Rat repeats in astonishment. “Why it’s the finest pipeweed you can ever hope to get your hands on! Just shows how uncultured you folks really are! Poison indeed!”
“I’m really sorry” Talen quickly apologizes. “I meant no offense. Clearly, I am not cultured enough to enjoy your halfling delicacy.”
Yusef nods. "I am inclined to agree with you, Talen. It would be fascinating to meet them, but it seems that is not destined to happen."
“I don’t see why not,” Talen says. “They live in a village near ours called Ronkan. We can always make a trip over there to visit.”
Talen's question causes Yusef to consider for several long moments. It is far more complex than it sounds on the surface. "First off, I would warn you that the world is vast beyond what you likely imagine. Few people are ever likely to see more than a tiny piece of the whole in one lifetime.

"Take your time, observe and learn. Keep your mind and thoughts fluid, as there will always be something new over the next hill. Help people wherever you can, but try not to absorb their prejudices or limitations. Try not to jump to conclusions, as hasty judgments almost always prove wrong.

"Most importantly, be true to yourself and your beliefs in all things. There are many temptations and trials in the world; many experiences and opportunities that can lead you astray. It can be so very easy to head down what appears at first to be a moral path, only to find later that you've slipped into a morass from which you may never extract yourself."
Talen considers Yusef’s words deeply before speaking. “You speak with great wisdom, Yusef. I will take your words to heart. In a way, they remind me of what grandmother said while we were preparing for our journey. I think you’ll like her.”

Next morning, Talen will thank Kylie for such a wonderful meal and this time keep how attractive he thinks she is to himself. The walk back to Byxata is a pleasant one and Talen will point out things of interest and offer tidbits of knowledge that he has learned growing up here in the valley.

Talen starts to get more excited as the goblin village comes into sight. That means that home is just a little bit further along. He’ll chat and greet his friends there before moving on.

Finally Byxata comes into sight. The only home Talen has ever known. He fields questions that come his way about how they came across these adventures on their way out of the valley and that they are seeking Nightmist.

Grandmother emerges from the temple, along with Sabal. After point her out, Talen will run up and give his beloved grandmother a big hug and explain what has happened as best he can. He’ll trail behind her as she greets the explorers and will follow along to the dinning hall.

“I’m really sorry” Talen quickly apologizes. “I meant no offense. Clearly, I am not cultured enough to enjoy your halfling delicacy.”
“Well, I’ll let you off easy this time. You seem like a good lad. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m not about to waste any of this pipeweed!”
Rat's words bring a smile to Kylie's face. It has been too long since she has spent time with her first mentor, and she finds that she misses his entertaining outlook. Kylie gives him a big hug, just for being him.
Rat is puzzled by this show of affection, at least a first.

“Trying to find something in me pockets, lass?” he’ll say with a smirk on his face.

Next morning, Rat will awaken feeling refreshed but feeling oddly damp. Did it rain last night? He makes no mention of sleeping through his guard duty. In fact, he’s already forgotten about it. The first order of business is warming his feet by the fire and then eating another round of Kylie’ fine cooking.

Rat manages to keep pace during the daylong trek. He eyes the goblin village skeptically. These folks seem peaceful enough, but seem to be lacking in any coins or valuables. They live a simple, albeit poor, existence in this Lost Valley. It doesn’t look like there’s gonna be much to find here! Looks like Sherwood have taken him on yet another quest with little coin to be gained from it!

The next village seems to be our destination. There are many critters that rat has never seen before here! Giant humans and elves with skin as dark as night! What an odd collection of races! Nightmist is introduced and she comes forth to greet us.

“She certainly seems friendly”, Rat will comment. He’ll say, “Hi Ma’am" when she greets him. "That’s some hair you’ve got there. I’d wager that a family of halflings could live in there!”

“Food? Well, I’d be honor to share a meal with you! Just lead the way!”

Sherwood

Post by Sherwood »

Sherwood:

Lia wrote:Lia’s expressions soon lighten and a warm smile forms across her face. “I always hoped to have a large family. It hasn’t been the same since we lost our parents.” when she says parents her features are downcast.
“If it is true, then I’ll introduce you to some of them. At least the ones I know that can easily accept having half-elves in the family. I’ll have to speak to Nightmist on the subject.”
Lia wrote:A look of sheer pity and sorrow strike her face as He tells of his wife and her fate. “I’m sorry for your lose. It must be very hard, but Mystra is right, you shouldn’t blame yourself. You should cherish the time that you had with her and soon the pain will fade. That is how I dealt with my parents death.”
“Thank you”, is all Sherwood will say on the matter.

The day’s journey is pleasant enough. Our path takes us through one of the small forests and it helps put the elves more at ease. Even Sherwood feels better in the forest.

The next part of the journey starts to become surreal. A village of goblins is reached and they all seem very peaceful! Almost like a normal human village. There’s even a half-ogre helping them out with those tasks that require great strength. Somehow these normally aggressive and evil creatures live here in peace and harmony. Amazing!

Sherwood will reiterate his command to attack only if we are attacked to his companions. No need to make things worse with an itchy bow finger.

The trip becomes even stranger as they close in on Nightmist’s home. A few drow are seen, but they are not threatening. A few even smile and wave as we pass. They are clearly unlike any drow Sherwood has ever encountered before.

Then we reach the Temple of Eilistraee and Nightmist herself comes forth. A look of surprise comes to Sherwood’s face when he sees her. He’s never seen a drow with such a bright, infectious smile before, let alone one so beautiful. He quickly begins to understand what his grandfather saw in her.

“I am Sherwood”, he’ll say stepping to the front of the group. “I believe that you knew my grandfather, James the Red. My companions and I have come searching for you in seek of information regarding a past mission you had with the Swords of Cynalon.”

“A meal would be most welcome. We’ve walked all day to reach here and as you suggest, there is much to discuss.”

Sherwood will follow Nightmist and company to their dinning hall. He will not pressure any of his companions to join them should they not desire to do so.

“If it is true, then I’ll introduce you to some of them. At least the ones I know that can easily accept having half-elves in the family. I’ll have to speak to Nightmist on the subject.”

“I would look forward to it, if it were possible.”

The days travel passes easy enough as the twins direct Nariya in which direction to move when the time comes. As they enter the forest she notes the tension in some of the elves falter and they become more relaxed.

As they near the goblin village, Lia wonders just how ready these newcomers are to see their world. A small forms on her features as she watches the kids play within the street and several of her friends wave and come say hello; in which Lia waves in return with a smile, stops and says hello and talks to as many as she can, without hindering the newcomers, then gives a hug to her closer of friends then returns to the column.

Byxata comes into view and a large smile comes to her face, “Home sweet home.” she says just above a whisper. She didn’t think she would miss it as much in such a short period of time.
“That is Nightmist”, Talen will say indicating one of the two women. He’ll then rush forward to hug his grandmother.
“The other is Sabal”, Lia adds. “She’s like our great-grandmother.” She to runs the remaining steps to her beloved grandmother and gives her a hug. She will help her excited brother retell their tale. Afterward she sees Sabal standing ever watchful which brings a smile to her face. “I didn’t think to see you so soon.”

As Nightmist makes her introductions Lia will accompany her but stand a few steps back from her grandmother, not wanting to crowd her or look over protective.

When food is mentioned Lia will accompany them to the dining hall, after all it may very well be the last home cooked meal she will have in sometime!!

If Yusef does accompany them Lia will walk beside him explaining the building’s uses, in particular the temple, “…And that over there is the Temple of Eilistraee, If you would like after dinner I could show you it?”
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Nariya:

There is little conversation except for when Lia or Talen point out which direction we need to be going. Nariya feels a little out of place since she isn't exactly trailblazing, but keeps alert despite the pair's comfort at being in familiar surroundings.

Upon coming upon the goblin village, Nariya gets a little apprehensive. She hasn't had her bow out, but her hands slip towards her swords until she catches herself at the sound of familiar greetings from the pair to many within the village. As the group moves through, Nariya sees very few adult male goblins, and her first thought is they are off raiding. Shaking her head, she tries to remember there is nothing around here to raid and that things are different.

Moving on, they finally reach Byxata and again she has to hold herself in check. A strange mixture of races seemingly resides together here. Her eyes settle on the Drow and her heart jumps. The stories were true of their description, but they don't make any move to attack. Looking down, her hands are firmly on the hilts of her swords, yet, thankfully, they are undrawn. Feeling a bit of embarassament, she removes her hands slowly in time to meet Nightmist and Sabal.

"A pleasure to meet both of you," Nariya will say, trying to keep a level and friendly tone. She still is not certain of her or her group's safety, and doubts she will be for a while. She will accompany Sherwood and any of the others who are going to the meal, mostly just to learn what she can about this place and any hints of their ultimate quest that led them here.

New Beginnings

Kylie:
Rat wrote:“Trying to find something in me pockets, lass?” he’ll say with a smirk on his face.
Kylie smirks at her dimunitive friend. "Nah, we both know you haven't got anything worth stealing..."
Talen wrote:Next morning, Talen will thank Kylie for such a wonderful meal and this time keep how attractive he thinks she is to himself.
"You're welcome," Kylie replies, still rather nonplussed by the man's attention.

The group proceeds to make their way across the valley floor, with Talen and Lia providing directions. Not really trusting the pair, Kylie keeps a sharp eye out for any sign of ambush, though she converses pleasantly with Lilia as she walks. Of course, she'd rather be riding, but that isn't really an option at the moment as Sherwood seems disinclined to conjure any mounts for them. Still, the valley really is lovely, and it would be hard not to notice. As they reach a wooded area, the elves relax visibly. Some part of her wants to respond similarly, but is quashed by the city-bred human half.

They pass more abandoned villages and even cross a bridge without meeting anyone. If the valley is inhabited, it appears they must be quite sparse. Eventually they arrive in a village that hasn't been abandoned. Kylie notes with alarm that the villagers are goblins! Immediately, she readies a Magic Missile for use at the first sign of aggression. Strangely, the goblins - and the huge ogrish entity - do not attack, and seem even a bit fearful. Nevertheless, some great their guides in a friendly manner. This does little to soothe Kylie's suspicions; perhaps they are here to prevent the group from leaving once they've been lead deeper into the enemy's domain. While there are no weapons evident, they could easily be secreted near at hand.

A little ways further on, they reach another village pressed up against the side of a cliff on the edge of the valley. The population here is an even stranger mix than before. A variety of goblinoids intermingle with drow and even humans! Again, none are openly hostile, but that means little.

Two drow women approach the group, causing Kylie further alarm. She struggles to keep the impulse to start flinging spells under control. Talen and Lia introduce the two as their grandmother, Nightmist, and great-grandmother Sabal. Nightmist wears the same holy symbol as Lia, thus marking her as some kind of priestess.

When Nightmist greets her, Kylie returns a tight, forced-looking smile. "Thank you," she says.

Sherwood introduces himself, and Nightmist invites them all to dinner. Sherwood, Rat and others agree; not wanting to be left behind, Kylie nods her acceptance and accompanies them inside. She's pretty determined not to actually eat the food, though; no telling what might be in it.

Travelling Ever Onward

Post by Yusef »

Yusef:
Talen wrote:“I don’t see why not,” Talen says. “They live in a village near ours called Ronkan. We can always make a trip over there to visit.”
"Ah, it seems I misunderstood. I was under the impression that they were long gone from this valley, perhaps even from the world entirely. That is good news! I would very much enjoy meeting the race that built these towns."
Talen wrote:Talen considers Yusef’s words deeply before speaking. “You speak with great wisdom, Yusef. I will take your words to heart. In a way, they remind me of what grandmother said while we were preparing for our journey. I think you’ll like her.”
"I'm afraid I cannot take credit for any of it; what I told you is largely just a distillation of the teachings of our priesthood," Yusef replies. "I have no doubt that I will enjoy meeting your grandmother. From what Sherwood has told us, she seems like a fine lady."

The morning breaks cool and bright. After gathering their things and having a quick bite that Kylie has prepared, they start on the next leg of their journey. Travel is a big part of what Celestian's priests are all about, and Yusef sets forth with gusto. As he walks along, he chats with Sherwood about the valley as they experience it, seeming having not a care in the world.

Lunch is spent at the edge of a wood overlooking a beautiful lake. Unfortunatly, the break is far too short and they are soon off again. They pass crop fields that have been prepared for winter and soon approach a village.

The inhabitants of the village prove to be goblins and a large, muscular half-ogre. While strange, the goblins seem friendly enough, and Yusef will say hello to any that approach. Yusef even steps a bit away from the group to get a better look at the village and what the inhabitants are doing.

They continue on and reach Byxata a little later. The inhabitants of this town are quite varied, including orcs, humans and drow. Two drow come forth to greet the group and are introduced by Talen and Lia as their ancestors. Greetings and introductions are exchanged by some, and Yusef participates in a friendly manner.

"Well met, Nightmist. It has been a fascinating journey here to find you. I hope you don't mind me staring a bit, as I have never seen a drow before." The subject of dinner comes up and Yusef is more than happy to join in.
Lia wrote:If Yusef does accompany them Lia will walk beside him explaining the building’s uses, in particular the temple, “…And that over there is the Temple of Eilistraee, If you would like after dinner I could show you it?”
Yusef listens as Lia tells him about the town and points out the temple. "Yes, I would very much like that. Thank you," he says.

Nightmist has been found and she is indeed a drow elf maiden. Her style of dress is plain, almost peasant-like. Her most remarkable features are her bright, infectious smile, her exotic beauty, and her ankle-long silver hair. She greets the explorers individually.

“Hello there!”, Nightmist says in greeting. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a halfling. You’re far a field from your Shires.”

Nightmist lets out a small laugh at Rat’s observation. It’s almost musical to the ear.

“That might be true, good sir, but I doubt they would live comfortably. I know how you halflings like your creature comforts and I would frown on anyone smoking pipe weed in my hair. Come, there is a roaring fire to warm your feet and a hot stew to warm your insides.”

“I am honored to meet you”, Nightmist states as she takes Sherwood’s hand. “Yes, I knew your grandfather very well. He was a good, kind man and a very dear friend. I can see some of him in you… the broad shoulders is a trait shared by most men in your family. I miss him very much.”

“Now there is a name I have not heard for a very long time. Yes, I was a member of the Swords of Cynalon for a while. Mostly because of James’ urging. We did much good for a time before the war with Keln came over us. I have often wondered whatever happened to your grandfather. Oh, the stories I could tell you of him.”
“A pleasure to meet you as well. You are a wood elf”, Nightmist notes. “Callarii tribe if I am not mistaken? You’re tattoo’s are very beautiful.”
When Nightmist greets her, Kylie returns a tight, forced-looking smile. "Thank you," she says.
“Ah, a half-elf! Well met. Forgive my curiosity, but were you raised by your human parent or by your elfin one?”
"Well met, Nightmist. It has been a fascinating journey here to find you. I hope you don't mind me staring a bit, as I have never seen a drow before." The subject of dinner comes up and Yusef is more than happy to join in.
“I bid you welcome”, Nightmist says with her ever present smile. “I do not mind. Truth be told, I have not seen that many tieflings in my day either, so forgive me for staring as well. Unless I am mistaken, your mortal parent was human were they not? And you are a Priest of Celestian the Wanderer as well.”

Sabal remains more reserved and aloof. She’ll nod respectfully to those who greet her.

You’re escorted into Nightmist’s simple home. There’s a small table in the kitchen itself that serves as the main dining area. There are only six places to sit. The aroma of the kitchen is very pleasant. Freshly baked bread can be smelled while a large stew pot simmers over the fire.

“Fortunately, I am in the habit of making extra to help feed others in the village, so there is plenty of food for all.”

At Nightmist’s direction, Talen will pull out extra bowls while Lia slices up bread. The stew is ladled out into bowls and given to each of you. The bread is laid out for all to consume.

“Had I know we were going to have guests, I would have made something special for the occasion.”

The stew smells good and is filled with diced potatoes and vegetables with hunks of meat. It tastes as good as it smells. It’s a warm and filling meal. Nightmist elects to remain standing as the meal begins and will eat lightly.

Nightmist's Story:

“I imagine that you have many questions about this place. I will answer them as best I can. Your grandfather told me that this Lost Valley was originally discovered by Victor the Second before he took the throne. This was a much different place than it is now. This valley is the cradle of Hutaakan civilization. As they advanced, they moved out into the lands down below. But in time more aggressive races were encountered and the Hutaakans were not a violent people. They eventually retreated back to this valley for their own safety.”

“But they were not alone. With them was a sub-servant tribe of humans called the Traldar. In time the Traldar rebelled and made open war against the Hutaaka. Even worse a monster called the Kartoeba had invaded the main Hutaakan temple of Pflarr. This was the situation that Victor found when he arrived here. The adventures managed to slay the monster and liberate the temple. Peace was brokered between the Hutaaka and the Traldar and tranquility came over the valley once more.”

“It was decided by Victor the Second to conceal the existence of this Lost Valley. Both the Hutaaka and Traldar were dying out and posed no threat to the kingdom below. The Archmage of the kingdom placed a Permanent Illusion over the way up into the mountains and all official charts did not include the valley on it. Things remained this way for hundreds of years.”

“About a hundred and fifty years ago, I was growing up with my family in the Underdark. I had just started training in the worship of the Spider Queen as dictated by the Matron of our house. But I did not believe in those dark teachings and could not stomach the behavior of the others around me. Instead another voice called to me. The voice of Eilistraee who told me that there was another way. That I could walk on the surface again like my ancestors once did. That killing and enslaving others was no way to live. That kindness was stronger than cruelty.”

“With Sabal’s help, we escaped from the Underdark. The tunnels we used were ancient and had not seen travelers in many years. We emerged on the surface here in this valley. The transition from the Underdark to the surface was traumatic for we drow, but I was determined to adjust for there was no going back. Death or worse was my fate for betraying the Spider Queen.”

“We entered the valley near a place the Hutaaka called the Singing Pool. By the time we arrived, the Hutaaka had dwindled to a few dozen and the Traldar were extinct. I found the Hutaaka to be a proud, nearly arrogant race. But they were peaceful and were more concerned about art and beauty than anything else. They were almost drow like in their conceit and that I knew how to deal with. I befriended them and they came to trust me.”

“Then it came to me why Eilistraee had guided me to this place. While the Hutaaka were a dying race, this valley could be used for good. It could be come a refuge for those wishing to live only in peace. It also meant going into the outside world and that was going to be problematic given my appearance the hatred of my kind on the surface. But still I had to try.”

“It was not easy at first and my faith was severely tried. Then I met your grandfather and he provided me with a magic item with which I could conceal my appearance. It was he who gave me the name Nightmist, because in the dark my hair seemed to move about as if a living vapor. James the Red helped me set up this refuge and for a time I adventured with him as a member of the Swords of Cynalon.”

“All was right in the world for a time. But then the war came and the Swords parted company. I was with child when your Grandfather departed on his final mission. I never saw him again and the Kingdom had changed dramatically. I dedicated myself to bringing those who only wish to live in peace to this valley and have done so ever since. I’ve had little contact with the affairs of men since that time.”

“That for the most part is my tale. So tell me my new friends, why have you come all this way to see me?”

Now what?

Lia can’t help but notice the tone of her grandmother’s voice, this James must have been someone special to have touched her so.
“Tiefling?” she looks to Yusef in wonder, “What exactly is a tiefling?” she asks no one in particular cause she does not wish to be rude to Yusef.
At Nightmist’s direction, Talen will pull out extra bowls while Lia slices up bread. The stew is ladled out into bowls and given to each of you. The bread is laid out for all to consume.

“Had I know we were going to have guests, I would have made something special for the occasion.”
After slicing the bread and taking a portion of both stew and Bread, Lia moves to a wall and leans their eating it. If she is able she will have seconds. No telling when She will be able to eat Nightmist’s fine food again.

She merely sits and listens to her Grandmother explaination of the past Most of which she knows from Nightmist’s and Sabal’s teachings.

As the others finish their Meals Lia will ask those if they wish for more or not, if Not she will take the bowls and begin cleaning up. Afterward she will return and listen to the tales Sherwood intentions.
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Sherwood

Post by Sherwood »

Sherwood:
“I am honored to meet you”, Nightmist states as she takes Sherwood’s hand. “Yes, I knew your grandfather very well. He was a good, kind man and a very dear friend. I can see some of him in you… the broad shoulders is a trait shared by most men in your family. I miss him very much.”
Sherwood is mildly surprised at just how forward and friendly Nightmist is. Her touch is tender and gentle and somewhat distracting. Based on what she said about his Grandfather it seems almost certain now that Lia and Talen are his cousins.

“The honor is all mine. Yes, that is a common trait among my family.”
Nightmist wrote:“Now there is a name I have not heard for a very long time. Yes, I was a member of the Swords of Cynalon for a while. Mostly because of James’ urging. We did much good for a time before the war with Keln came over us. I have often wondered whatever happened to your grandfather. Oh, the stories I could tell you of him.”
“Most of what I know about my grandfather comes from the books that I have read. I would love to hear your stories about him. There have been very few people I’ve met that knew him firsthand. No one still knows what happened to him and the others involved in that final raid on Keln’s Palace. Even the palace itself vanished leaving behind no clues.”

Sherwood follows Nightmist into her humble dwelling. The aroma is most pleasant and reminds Sherwood just how hungry he is. He figures the food is safe to consume. After all, they had no way of knowing we were coming before hand and the others here are eating too.
Nightmist wrote:“Had I know we were going to have guests, I would have made something special for the occasion.”
“That’s quite alright. This will do nicely.” Sherwood will stand as well for the meal.

Nightmist then goes into her tale. How this Lost Valley was discovered by Victor the Second and his subsequent decision to hide its existence. Then how she came to this valley and how she met James and adventured with the Swords of Cynalon. Her story does seem to explain all the facts of the situation, as Sherwood knows them. The valley was found in the early days of the kingdom and concealed, as those within were no threat. Later Nightmist used it as her base of operations with the aid of James. Then comes to time for Sherwood to explain why they have come here.

“Kylie, Lilia, and myself were part of another adventuring group a few weeks back when we fought men who, upon death or defeat, burst into Blackflames and were fully consumed. The incident triggered memories of things I had read in my ancestors’ journal. There were some details there, but not enough to paint a complete picture. In my search I found a crude map depicting these mountains with your name indicated on it.”

“It was our hope to locate you to learn more information about the Cult of the Blackflame as they appear to be active once more. What we need to know is everything that happened during your campaign against them. Can you help us?”
I do what is necessary.

Nariya:

“A pleasure to meet you as well. You are a wood elf”, Nightmist notes. “Callarii tribe if I am not mistaken? You’re tattoo’s are very beautiful.”

Nightmist indeed has a pleasant manner about her, not at all what she expected from the horrible stories told to her at a young age. It makes Nariya wonder if Kylie is going to try to stab Nightmist just for not living up to the half-elf's horrible expectations.

Nightmist's comment about her tribe is suprising, but in a good way. She had not expected the Drow to know her tribal roots, although really she can't think of a reason why Nightmist wouldn't know. They are the most renowned tribe of wood elves after all! "Yes, you are correct," Nariya replies, finding herself smiling despite herself, "and yes my tattoos are very beautiful and precious to me."

Trying to remain alert, Nariya finds herself unable to justify being wary, especially after entering Nightmist's humble home. There are just no signs of spiders, or slaves chained to the walls, to make her believe that Nightmist is one of those storytime Drow.

Taking a smaller portion of food than she might normally, Nariya finds it quite delicious. Listening to Nightmist's story, she begins to understand what exactly has been going on with this valley, and it begins to make a lot of sense to her. She will eventually take another helping, although small, before the food is all gone.

It becomes Sherwood's turn to explain why they are here. The cult sounds fiendish to her and must indeed be put down if they have resurfaced. Nariya waits to see what Nightmist's response will be, hoping she has some insight to this as well.

Rat:
“Hello there!”, Nightmist says in greeting. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a halfling. You’re far a field from your Shires.”
Nightmist lets out a small laugh at Rat’s observation. It’s almost musical to the ear.

Rat can’t help but chuckle at Nightmist’s laugh. “You must have a wonderful singing voice! Are you a singer?”
“That might be true, good sir, but I doubt they would live comfortably. I know how you halflings like your creature comforts and I would frown on anyone smoking pipe weed in my hair. Come, there is a roaring fire to warm your feet and a hot stew to warm your insides.”
Again Rat will chuckle at the dark elf’s words. It’s clear that she’s spent time among halflings before. “You don’t have to ask me twice!”, Rat says and will go inside with the others. He’ll find something comfortable to sit on and prop his feet up near the fire. The stew is as advertised and Rat will have at least half-a-dozen bowls if able.

He hears some of the stories being told by Nightmist and then by Sherwood, but eventually falls fast asleep in his chair.

“They number only a few dozen these days, but they are still here for the moment.”

Excitement grows in Talen as they travel nearer and near to home. He does feel more relaxed in the forest, but cannot fathom while Kylie still appears to be tense. These are the places of our ancestors and all with elven blood should feel at home in a forest.

Talen says hello to his friends in the goblin village, but can’t help notice the anxiety in the faces of his new traveling companions. If he didn’t know better, some of them would attack at any moment! He finds it hard to fathom that they would attack any being without cause. Fortunately, violence is averted and we continue on.

Home comes into view and when Nightmist comes out, Talen rushes to greet her.
“That is Nightmist”, Talen will say indicating one of the two women. He’ll then rush forward to hug his grandmother.
Talen hangs back while the introductions are made and will follow his grandmothers’ instructions as we move into the kitchen to eat. He’ll help clean up after the meal is done and will gather the small pile of dishes left by the sleeping Rat.

Talen will listen with great interest at the conversation between Grandmother and Sherwood.

Lilia:

The elf maiden has been mostly silent during the daylong walk, but those who are near her can’t help but feel her tenseness. Everyone fiber of her being wants to cry out just how wrong this all is! Drow cannot be trusted! Goblins, ogres, and orcs should be killed on sight!

Lilia does relax noticeably during the all too short stay in the forest. It’s nowhere near as grand as the forests of the Elfholds, but better than nothing.

Then it’s on to a village of goblins! The horrid little creatures seem to be pretend to act civilized. “It’s a trick of some kind! It must be!”

Continuing on it just gets worse. We walk into a village with drow, half-giants, and other fell and evil creatures! Just like lambs to the slaughter!

Lilia will glare at Nightmist and the other drow. Her hands hold her bow and will tremble slightly. No words are spoken and Lilia refuses to enter the dwelling of the drow. Instead she’ll stand guard and keep her eyes open for the first sign of the treachery to come.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Nightmist wrote:“Ah, a half-elf! Well met. Forgive my curiosity, but were you raised by your human parent or by your elfin one?”
Kylie is a bit taken aback by Nightmist's question. "Well... both, at first, until my elven mother went away. Then it was just my father and I."

Kylie is half tempted to stay outside with Lilia, but isn't comfortable with leaving her more trusting companions alone inside.

Admittedly, the smells are wonderful. Clearly, someone here is a good cook. Still, Kylie doesn't trust the food, and will eat and drink as little as possible. She can always eat from their own supplies later. Of course, the fact that Nightmist doesn't eat much herself does nothing to allay her suspicions. Noting Rat eating his way through nearly his own weight in this stew, Kylie watches him carefully for any sign of it having an effect on the halfling.

Nightmist launches into a lengthy tale of the valley and her own experiences. This woman was a member of the Swords of Cynalon, and a companion of Victor the 2nd and James the Red. They must have had some reason for trusting her; could she have fooled them both for so long?

Eventually, the tale ends and Sherwood explains their purpose to the drow woman. Whatever the truth of Nightmist might be, there is no doubt in Kylie's mind that this Cult of the Blackflame must be dealt with.

Yusef:

Noting Lilia's growing anxiety as they pass through the goblin towns and into Byxata, Yusef keeps a subtle eye on the elven woman. He remains ever ready to intervene if she become violent; fortunately, it never comes to that.
Talen wrote:“They number only a few dozen these days, but they are still here for the moment.”
Yusef nods with a smile. "That is wonderful; I'm sure that it will be the experience of a lifetime."
Nightmist wrote:“I bid you welcome”, Nightmist says with her ever present smile. “I do not mind. Truth be told, I have not seen that many tieflings in my day either, so forgive me for staring as well. Unless I am mistaken, your mortal parent was human were they not? And you are a Priest of Celestian the Wanderer as well.”
Yusef smiles back, though it fades somewhat at the mention of his parentage. "Yes, my mother was very much a human. My father... well, he was a tiefling, as you mentioned; I'm not certain whether he would be considered mortal or not. You might consider me to be a half-tiefling; the tainted blood is somewhat diluted in me.

"You are correct in regards to my calling in life. I am of the order of warrior-priests of Celestian."
Lia wrote:“Tiefling?” she looks to Yusef in wonder, “What exactly is a tiefling?” she asks no one in particular cause she does not wish to be rude to Yusef.
Yusef turns and regards Lia for a moment, uncertain how she will take the truth. "A tiefling is one who's parentage is mixed with those of the lower planes."

The meal provided is excellent; Yusef eats a healthy serving, but doesn't stuff himself. As he eats, he listens to Nightmist's tale. It is long and full of interesting information about the area. Sherwood then tells her of the nature of their quest; Yusef hadn't heard much of this, so listens carefully. He had heard brief mentions of this cult during his training, but had no idea that they still existed. Though he knows very little of them, what he does know is sufficient to convince him that they are a threat to them all.

Meeting Nightmist:

The explorers continue to meet with Nightmist...
Sherwood wrote:"Most of what I know about my grandfather comes from the books that I have read. I would love to hear your stories about him. Even the palace itself vanished leaving behind no clues."
"I would love to tell them to you," Nightmist replies. "The time I spent with your Grandfather was among the happiest days of my life. Yes, they all just seemed to vanish at the end of the war. Not even divinations could reveal their fate. After Jylsin was a few years old, I did go back out into the world but almost everyone I knew was now gone. It felt very unfriendly once more."

"Then came the humanoid hordes from the Broken Lands that drove everyone to the east side of the Streel River. Many half-orcs were born from those raids and I helped those mothers who had nowhere else to turn. The stigma of a half-orc child is still very strong among humans these days. I brought those who wished to escape here to live in peace."

Nariya wrote:Nightmist's comment about her tribe is surprising, but in a good way. "Yes, you are correct," Nariya replies, finding herself smiling despite herself, "and yes my tattoos are very beautiful and precious to me."
"I've passed through your woods on many occasion as I was the closest to an Elven forest I ever suspected to get too. A very lovely place with lovely people."
Rat wrote:Rat can't help but chuckle at Nightmist's laugh. "You must have a wonderful singing voice! Are you a singer?"
"Yes, I am," Nightmist will smile. "We always have song and music during our services to the Dark Maiden. All priestess are trained in at least one musical instrument."
Rat wrote:Again Rat will chuckle at the dark elf's words. It's clear that she's spent time among halflings before. "You don't have to ask me twice!" Rat says and will go inside with the others. He'll find something comfortable to sit on and prop his feet up near the fire. The stew is as advertised and Rat will have at least half-a-dozen bowls if able.
Nightmist smiles as the one called Rat scurries along. "Typical halfling," she thinks to herself.
Kylie wrote:Kylie is a bit taken aback by Nightmist's question. "Well... both, at first, until my elven mother went away. Then it was just my father and I."
"I was mere curious", Nightmist will say. "I have noted in the past that how a half-elf was raised, by either the human or elfin parent, determines their attitudes. The purpose of my question was to find out how I should relate to you, be it as an elf or as a human. My guess is that you lean more towards your human heritage than your elfin one."
Yusef wrote:Yusef smiles back, though it fades somewhat at the mention of his parentage. "Yes, my mother was very much a human. "You are correct in regards to my calling in life. I am of the order of warrior-priests of Celestian."
"I meant no insult", Nightmist will say in a soothing voice. "None of us had any choice when it comes to the circumstances of our births. Eilistraee teaches that our appearances have absolutely nothing to do with who we are. This flesh just houses our spirit and once the flesh fades our immortal spirits will be free to travel to the afterlife. The flesh does not define who we are."

"In short this does not matter", Nightmist gestures to her own body. "For it is what lies inside that truly defines who we are. The fact that you are a Priest of Celestian tells me more than your appearance ever would. It tells me who you are and that you can be trusted."

"Unlike the creatures of the outer planes, we mortals are not predisposed to our paths in life. Our attitudes towards good and evil are not ingrained into us. For unlike those creatures, we have souls. We are free to find our own way and have the choice of either doing good or evil or anything in-between. No drow or orc or goblin or even tiefling is born evil. This is something that they learn from those around them. We are all products of our environment. We learn our attitudes and behavior as we grew. Those children who have grown up in this valley will never become evil, as it will not be taught to them. They will be repulsed by it as any other good person would. They won't be colored by prejudice and hate."

"Your father is indeed mortal. Anyone born from a union of human and a being from the outer planes has a soul. That is what makes us mortal."

Lia & Yusef wrote:"Tiefling?" she looks to Yusef in wonder, "What exactly is a tiefling?" she asks no one in particular cause she does not wish to be rude to Yusef.

Yusef turns and regards Lia for a moment, uncertain how she will take the truth. "A tiefling is one whose parentage is mixed with those of the lower planes."
"It is a very broad label as there is no general appearance for a tiefling, unlike half-elves for instance." Nightmist adds. "There were those drow priestess who, in their lust for power, did consort with demons and bear them children. That is how I know of tieflings."

"To balance the tieflings, there are the Aasimar. Their parentage is mixed with creatures from the upper planes."

The Tale of the Cult of the Blackflame:

Inside Nightmist's humble dwelling, Sherwood has just revealed their reason for coming here.
Sherwood wrote:"It was our hope to locate you to learn more information about the Cult of the Blackflame as they appear to be active once more. What we need to know is everything that happened during your campaign against them. Can you help us?"
"The cult active again?" Nightmist repeats in surprise. "This is terrible news! Of course I will assist you. They must be stopped before they can grow in power."

Nightmist pauses as if bring back very old memories.

"The cult worships the vile substance known as the Blackflame. It is literally a black fire that only burns living things. Specifically those beings that have souls. The fire burns the soul and leaves behind only lifeless flesh. It is one of the most horrid ways to die. For death by Blackflame is permanent and there is no eternal afterlife when the soul is destroyed."

"The flames cannot be extinguished by any normal means. One of the most horrible things I ever witnessed was death by Blackflame. Poor Melchor was consumed by it in front of our very eyes. He writhed about on the ground trying to put the flames out but could not. I still have nightmares about it. Finally his screams stopped and his body ceased to move. The flame consumed his flesh and left behind his clothing and bones."

"Anyway, our battle against the Cult was the final mission of the Swords of Cynalon. The baby Crown Prince Victor the 7th had been kidnapped along with his older sister, the Princess Theandra. They were being held hostage by the Cult."

"We fought and defeated a small gathering of cultists in Elcadan and learned of their base of operations in this region. It was a small fortress just north of the Great Swamp to the south of Elcadan. Swamp surrounded it for many miles and a large tribe of lizard men called that area home."

"Melchor perished during the battle in Elcadan. It was only afterwards that we learned that the Blackflame was magical in nature and could be dispelled like any other enchantment. But it must be cast quickly as the Blackflame does its work with horrible efficiency."

"We fought our way through the swamp battling lizard men along the way and reached the ancient fortress. It was older than the kingdom itself and was crumbling. With in the courtyard, right out in the open, was a huge brazier of Blackflame. The guards of the fortress would dip their swords into it and Blackflame would coat their blades for a short time."

"It was a tremendous struggle, but we managed to defeat them. The baby prince was found, but there was no sign of his sister. We were all wounded and hordes of lizard men were marching on the keep. Having little choice, James teleported us all away to safety. The Swords parted company then. The noblemen took the young prince back to the palace and the war with Keln began. That consumed all their free time from then on out."

"I returned here to the valley and discovered that I was with child. I am told that Arak returned to Rockhome to lead the dwarves into battle against the forces of Keln. James, Jalazar, Validar and Valerian all took place in the final battle and never were heard from again. I do know what happened to Beleme."

"The mission did seem incomplete at the time, but all the Cultists were killed in the battle. We just never found the missing Princess. We feared that she had already been killed as she was, as James put it, strong willed and highly protective of her younger brother."

"We did find something unusual within that crumbling fortress. In a small chamber on the third floor of the fortress we found a strange object. It was a stone circular platform that very nearly filled the entire room. The rim of the platform was silver and there was what appeared to be a keyhole in the center. Five runes were spaced out evenly around the edge of the platform. We did not have time to fully investigate this strange platform and its purpose remains a mystery."

"My best advice is to travel to this ancient fortress. If the cult has surfaced once more then perhaps it is their base of operations. We extinguished the Brazier of Blackflame, but perhaps our efforts were not permanent."

"In the meantime, you are all welcome to stay with us as our guests. I'll have rooms prepared for you all."

Just to clarify, Nightmist was not a companion of Victor the 2nd. That Victor was the first to discover the Lost Valley and died before Nightmist was even born. The people that Nightmist knew included James the Red (Sherwood's Grandfather & Sharadin's father), Jalazar Sallivarian (Jallarzi's grandfather), Validar and Valerian (Validar's Grandfather & Grand Uncle), and Arak Stonehand (Aria's Father). She participated in the mission that rescued Victor the 7th when he as just a baby (the current king who just stepped down over in New Frontiers), but never actually met Victor the 6th.

There is also substantial information on the Cult delivered by Sherwood in the first few pages of New Frontiers #13.

Now what?

Lia

Yusef turns and regards Lia for a moment, uncertain how she will take the truth. "A tiefling is one who's parentage is mixed with those of the lower planes."

“Oooohhhh.” Lia says with a bit of naivity in her voice. She turns and regards Yusef a moment and looks him over finally noticing his skin as well as eyes, which she finds beautiful. “I Hope that all teiflings are as kind as you.” giving him a warm smile.

"Melchor perished during the battle in Elcadan. It was only afterwards that we learned that the Blackflame was magical in nature and could be dispelled like any other enchantment. But it must be cast quickly as the Blackflame does its work with horrible efficiency."

Lia will commit this to her memory so that if she does encounter it she will know what to do.

As Nightmist and Sherwood speak of the Blackflame’s history and apparent demise Lia gets a little nervous and places her hand to her. To be burned so by such a fire must be horrible!!! A though comes to her mind as she hears the story and she can’t help keep it from her mind.

If the Princess was so protective of her brother she may do anything to save his life, even risking her own. Perhaps she made a deal so that the cult took her to some unknown fate so that her brother could live? She looks to Talen while thinking this; I know I would. She thinks somberly.

When they conclude their meeting Lia will ask Sherwood, “I would like to help you in this quest, If you will have me.”

Not seeing Lilia come in for the meeting Lia will scoop out some stew and get a slice of bread, and come outside to Lilia. "I do not know if you are hungry, but perhaps you would like some?" She will place the bowl on a chair near Lilia. "What do you think of my home?" She asks the elf maiden.
If she does not wish it she will return it to the kitchen.
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Interesting... Kylie thinks to herself. He seems inclined to downplay the unnaturalness of what he is. No wonder he gets along so well with all these drow and other perversions.
Nightmist wrote:"I was mere curious", Nightmist will say. "I have noted in the past that how a half-elf was raised, by either the human or elfin parent, determines their attitudes. The purpose of my question was to find out how I should relate to you, be it as an elf or as a human. My guess is that you lean more towards your human heritage than your elfin one."
Kylie eyes Nightmist for a moment, looking for the hidden meanings in her comments. "That may be. I try to remain true to both my parents, but I may know my father the better of the two." After all, it was her mother who taught her the evil of the drow.

Kylie listens as Nightmist tells what she knows of the Cult of Blackflame and her experiences with them. From her description of the location of the fortress, it shouldn't be too hard to find. The distance from Elcadan to the Great Swamp is not great, and it would be located in swampland between the two. That cannot describe very many places.

It also occurs to her that the Swords of Cynalon were more powerful than their own small group. If their battle was so terrible, it can only be hoped that what remains of the Cult is much smaller now; otherwise, they could be in a lot of trouble. At least the Blackflame can be Dispelled, so that might help some.

She doesn't like the sound of the platform Nightmist describes. If Kylie had to guess, she'd say it was some kind of portal. But to where? The greatest danger is that the leaders of the Cult might have escaped. It may also have something to do with them not finding the princess. Perhaps she yet lives, somewhere.

Kylie wrinkles her nose when Nightmist offers rooms. She and Lilia may be more comfortable outside. When the discussion is done, Kylie will locate Lilia. "Personally, I'd rather take my chances in the woods, if you're so inclined. Since neither of us need a great deal of sleep, we can take turns on watch."

=============================================
Sorry about the mistake regarding Victor the 2nd; I misinterpreted.

Based on the Pyris/Elcadan map, I'm thinking the two hexes of swamp directly west of Hendry and southeast of Elstrich are the most likely location of the fortress.

"I would be inclined to agree with you, though I know few do. I believe that both good and evil are learned, rather than innate. All beings have certain inclinations, but as sentient beings, we have the ability to overcome our lesser inclinations and to maximize our positive ones.

"As for my father, I'm sure you must be right. However, I've seen little to indicate that it is true."
Nightmist wrote:"To balance the tieflings, there are the Aasimar. Their parentage is mixed with creatures from the upper planes."
Yusef pauses a moment. "I have never heard that before. Aasimar, you say? Can you tell me more of them?"
Lia wrote:“Oooohhhh.” Lia says with a bit of naivity in her voice. She turns and regards Yusef a moment and looks him over finally noticing his skin as well as eyes, which she finds beautiful. “I Hope that all teiflings are as kind as you.” giving him a warm smile.
Yusef frowns. "Unfortunately, that is not the case. Most tieflings, in my experience, are nearly as bad as those who spawned them."

Nightmist tells a long tale of the Swords of Cynalon and the Cult of the Blackflame. From the description, the Cult, and the Blackflame itself, are both dire foes. Though he had not heard of this group until this very day, Yusef is determined to see them removed from this world. If left unchecked, they could bring terrible pain and suffering to incalculable numbers of people.
Nightmist wrote:"In the meantime, you are all welcome to stay with us as our guests. I'll have rooms prepared for you all."
"That is very generous, Nightmist," Yusef replies. "I would be happy to stay as your guest, even if for but a night."
Lia wrote:When they conclude their meeting Lia will ask Sherwood, “I would like to help you in this quest, If you will have me.”
Hearing Lia's request, Yusef turns to Sherwood to hear his reply. It seems a good idea to him, as Lia appears to be a good soul and is undoubtedly competant.

Nariya:

"I've passed through your woods on many occasion as I was the closest to an Elven forest I ever suspected to get too. A very lovely place with lovely people."

"Really?" Nariya will say, unable to hide the astonishment from her voice. "When was the last time you passed through?"

Nariya listens intently to Nightmist's story about their encounter with the Cult of the Black Flame. However the parts about the missing princess and the strange platform that were never fully investigated leaves Nariya thinking there are several blatant loose ends. Still the information is very valuable.

Nariya believes that should be their next step in the path of this mystery. It sounds like she will be able to utilize her skills yet again, and feels the anticipation grow. When Nightmist offers eveyone to stay, she will look to Sherwood for the response. Nariya is aware that some of their band are not comfortable, and she is still feeling a bit wary herself. She's not sure being indoors will be the best decision.

Talen:

Talen quietly helps clean up after the meal while Grandma tells her tale about the Cult of the Blackflame. Its clear to him just how important her time among these adventurers were. She speaks of them with such great fondness that Talen can’t help wonder if he’ll look back on this time in his life with such affection.
When they conclude their meeting Lia will ask Sherwood, “I would like to help you in this quest, if you will have me.”
“Count me in too,” Talen quickly adds. “We’re supposed to be in this together, sister.”

The hour grows late and Talen feels the daylong walk catching up with him. He’ll help as needed before retiring to his old room for sleep.

Sherwood:

Sherwood listens intently to Nightmist’ tale. It does fit in with the facts as he knows them and adds new details as well.
Nightmist wrote:"My best advice is to travel to this ancient fortress. If the cult has surfaced once more then perhaps it is their base of operations. We extinguished the Brazier of Blackflame, but perhaps our efforts were not permanent."
“My thoughts exactly,” Sherwood agrees. “Thank you, Nightmist. You’ve at least given us a place to look.”
Nightmist wrote:"In the meantime, you are all welcome to stay with us as our guests. I'll have rooms prepared for you all."
“Thank you again,” Sherwood answers. “I’ll let my companions decide how they wish to spend the night. Some of them prefer to camp outdoors to being cooped up inside.”
When they conclude their meeting Lia will ask Sherwood, “I would like to help you in this quest, if you will have me.”

“Count me in too,” Talen quickly adds. “We’re supposed to be in this together, sister.”
“Thank you for your offer. I’ll consider your request,” Sherwood answers diplomatically.

Sherwood will chat with Nightmist for as long as she is will. There is much he wishes to know and few questions that he wants to ask in private.

Lilia:

Warily, the Elf Maiden watches various beings walk past the outside of Nightmist’s house. Creatures that should be attacking her on site as that is their true nature. And yet they just look at her with curiosity and wonder. Have they never seen a true elf before? Do they not know the face of their enemy?
Not seeing Lilia come in for the meeting Lia will scoop out some stew and get a slice of bread, and come outside to Lilia. "I do not know if you are hungry, but perhaps you would like some?" She will place the bowl on a chair near Lilia. "What do you think of my home?" She asks the elf maiden. If she does not wish it she will return it to the kitchen.
Lilia raises one eyebrow as the half-breed comes forth. At first glance she looks similar to Kylie. One born of an elf and a human, but her elf side is dark and corrupt. It is puzzling that that her skin can be so far to be born of demonic blackness.

“I’ve eaten”, is all Lilia will tensely say on the subject of food. “

“I don’t know what to make of this place. Everything here is wrong! You freely mingle with creatures that should kill you without a second thought. Even your blood is corrupted with ancient sins! I hate it. The sooner we leave the better!”
“Agreed. Anywhere away from here is most desirable.”

Not saying a word she merely retrieves the food, Upon hearing Lilia words Lia merely adds in reply,
“It is only wrong because it is of what you are not used to. These people here would not harm me nor you without just cause. More so they would stand and defend you while you were here. I know this because I have stood by them as they have stood by me.

My blood maybe corrupted in your eyes but not mine, I will not be labeled by my heritage but by actions and words. I am sorry that you view it with such hatred. It is a shame that you could not give them a chance as they have given you……” speaking evenly and friendly.

Inside Nightmist’s Kitchen…

Yusef pauses a moment. "I have never heard that before. Aasimar, you say? Can you tell me more of them?"
“I’ve only heard stories about them,” Nightmist explains. “They are the offspring of mortals and those good creatures of the upper planes. The most likely parent of an Aasimar is one of the race of Aasimon’s, powerful beings in the service of the gods of good. I have not be fortunate enough to actually met one, but I am told that they are handsome beings and very charismatic. They are born leaders and aid all good beings.”
"Really?" Nariya will say, unable to hide the astonishment from her voice. "When was the last time you passed through?"
“It’s been a while since my last visit as the need of those here in the valley take up much of my time. It’s been about twenty-five years now.”

The rest of the night passes with conversation, as Nightmist will converse with those who desire it. Quarters are arranged for those who want them. The elfin priestess shows no signs of disappointment for those who prefer to camp outdoors in the nearby forest.

Regardless of where you sleep, the night passes without incident.

GM Notes:

Carry on conversing with Nightmist and you can start with what you plan to do the next day as well.

Now what?

Lia

As the night wages on Lia begins to move about Nightmist’s cabin gathering whatever she may need for the coming day, if she is allowed to come. She sits and listens to Sherwood and Nightmist speak of older times even with her love for history she begins to grow tired of their stories and sits near the fire. Pulling out a wooden carved flute she begins to play a tune she loved as a child.

Noticing the time she excuses herself to go to the temple to do her nightly rituals and prayer.

When morning comes a calling Lia is up fairly early helping prepare breakfast to those who wish to have it. Afterward Lia can be seen working through her sword routines to sharpen her skills. Upon seeing Talen she will ask, “Care for a little work out brother?” as she motions with her sword.

Kylie

Kylie listens as the conversation continues, though she does not comment. There are too many here with suspect intentions. The mention of Aasimar intrigues her; while she cannot recall him mentioning it, something about the description causes her to think of Lord Acerion...

Lia, and then Talen, ask Sherwood permission to join the group in their quest. This is definitely not to her liking. Fortunately, Sherwood gives a non-committal answer.
Lilia wrote:“Agreed. Anywhere away from here is most desirable.”
"Nariya seemed a bit uncomfortable inside, if not for the same reasons. Let me see if she would like to join us, then we'll find a place well away from these... creatures."

Kylie will go in search of Nariya and ask the elven woman if she would like to join Lilia and herself in the woods for the night.

Either way, once they settle in for the night, Kylie will gladly take her shift at watch. She will also provide her companions at the campsite with some light fare for those who were leary of the food provided by the drow. Any remaining time spent not sleeping will be spent reviewing her spellbook.

Yusef:

Yusef is glad to hear Talen volunteer to join them like his sister. They are both likely to be happier together, and would be good additions to the group. Sherwood appears to be considering the request, though he doesn't give an immediate answer. Perhaps he wants to discuss it with the group, first.
Nightmist wrote:“I’ve only heard stories about them,” Nightmist explains. “They are the offspring of mortals and those good creatures of the upper planes. "Fascinating," Yusef says. The variety of sentient life in this world seems almost limitless. "Yet another type of being I hope to meet someday. Surely if I travel long enough, I will encounter one eventually."

The meeting seemingly over, Yusef turns to the siblings. "When would be the best time for the tour you mentioned? Now or in the morning? I really am looking forward both to seeing your temple and meeting the Hutaaka."

Yusef sleeps quite comfortably in the room provided by Nightmist. Before bed, he conducts a short service in honor of Celestian. Rising early, he spends a little while stretching and moving through his forms.

Hearing Lia invite Talen for some practice, Yusef asks, "Mind if I watch?"

"Yes, that would be my prefrence," Nariya replies. "Thank you for asking."

She will join Kylie and Lilia out in the woods, enjoying the open sky and the night air. She considers opening up a conversation on something that is sure to start tempers flaring, but she feels it's a valid question. "So what do you two think? I mean really think, about all this?" she'll ask, sweeping her arm behind her to indicate everything they've seen - the village, the mix of races and Nightmist. Sherwood

Post by Sherwood »

Sherwood:

Sherwood talks with Nightmist long into the night and very nearly until morning. The knowledge and insights that he’s learned are invaluable. Some of his own deductions are proven to be accurate. The information does cause some misgivings and will fill Sherwood’s thoughts even as he uses a guest room for sleep. How to proceed from here?

It is unusually late in the morning when Sherwood rises. He’ll stop by the kitchen and see if there is anything to eat before heading out into the village. He spies Yusef watching Talen and Lia sparing with swords in the courtyard. Sherwood watches for a moment and then will ask if they know where the others are.

Assuming that they do, he’ll ask Yusef to come with him and that when he returns he’ll speak to both Talen and Lia privately.

Once reunited with the Nariya, Rat, Kylie and Lilia in the nearby forest, Sherwood reveals his current plan of action.

“I trust we’re all surprised by what we found here in the Lost Valley? It seems that we’ve come to the part where we decide what to do next. Obviously, we continue on with our goal to locate the Cult of the Blackflame. To that end, I’ll be using magic to make the trip go faster.”

“My plan is to teleport all of us to my cousin Jallarzi’s estate outside of Elcadan. From there we’ll proceed south to the ruins that Nightmist indicated. I estimate that I’ll be able pull this off with just two trips out of the valley.”

“Lia and Talen have asked to come along with us and I am going to permit it. Now before everyone gets too worked up, hear me out. The twins’ mysterious grandfather is none other than my own grandfather, James the Red. I suspected this early on and Nightmist confirmed it last night. She spoke of the traditional appearance of the men in my family and Talen has those features to some degree.”

“In short, they are my own cousins. I’ve agreed to take them under my wing and out into the world with Nightmist’s blessings. They have quite a few interesting people to meet.”

“Anyway, we’ll depart near sunset this afternoon. That’ll give everyone a chance to complete any tasks that they wish to do. Let’s say we meet back here late this afternoon? I’ll teleport Rat and Lilia first and then come back for everyone else.”

“Any questions?”

Later on, Sherwood will have his private meeting with Lia and Talen.

“Nightmist has confirmed what we suspected. We share the same grandfather. That makes us cousins. Nightmist has agreed to let me take you with me when we depart on our mission to find the Cult of the Black Flame. I’ll be using magic to move us out of the valley late this afternoon.”

“Our destination is the estate of our cousin, the Lady Jallarzi Sallivarian. One of her ancestors, Jalazar, was another member of the Swords of Cynalon that your grandparents were a member of.”

“We’re meeting in the nearby forest near sunset. So wrap up your affairs and be ready to leave then.”

“Do you have any questions?”

"Lady? She is of some notirity then?” the shock of having more family is somewhat surprising though somewhat expected as Sherwood and her spoke briefly of it.
“What is the weather like there? Any particular type of clothing that would be preferred?

“Uhm, sure. As long as you go easy on me!”

Rat:

Sometime next morning, Rat comes around due to a combination of factors. First he smells something good cooking and his stomach is awake before he is. Next he hears a wondrous voice singing as they work.

Opening his eyes, Rat finds that he’s in the same spot that he fell asleep in near the fire. He rises, stretches and scratches for a bit. Then he scurries over to the stove where the nice lady with the long silver hair is working.

“Is it ready yet? I’m starving!”

After breakfast, Rat will go forth to explore. The lass doesn’t seem to be around and the other elves are gone too. Maybe they went off without him? No, there’s Yusef and the half-elf twins right there.

No matter, Rat will happily explore the village. After all, you’ll never know what you might find if you don’t look!

Later Rat listens as Sherwood lays out his course of action. “Sounds fine ta me,” the halfling simply says seemingly without a care in the world. “More things to explore!”

The Elf Maiden does not reply, but cannot help but hear the words. Even worse there is some truth to them. The only one being hatful here is her!

Later, Lilia feels a bit more relaxed once they reach the forest and make camp. She’s really not hungry as she nibbled on her elfin trail mix earlier. She’ll take her turn at guard duty during the night while the others sleep.

Nariya wrote:She will join Kylie and Lilia out in the woods, enjoying the open sky and the night air. "Sherwood has never led me astray in the past. Do you think he makes the right decisions now as well?"

“I am not sure,” Lilia admits, uncertainty in her voice. “It has dominated my thoughts for the last few hours now. It is the true that the drow abandoned life on the surface and took up with their precious Spider Queen in the sunless depths. Those who did so betrayed the Seldarine in doing so. They turned their backs on their own gods.”

“Some of the other creatures here routinely attack my clan in the Elfholds. Orcs, goblins, ogres-- these are typically monsters to be attacked on sight for that is what they would do. That is what I have been trained to do.”

Lilia noticeably pauses for a moment.

“When the Father-Of-All-Elves spoke to me, he said not to give in to prejudice and greed. When I first left the Elfholds, I had no great love for humans. I thought them little more than mindless barbarians. I was wrong and it took the voice of the Father to show me the error of my ways.”

“I cannot help but wonder if I am straying once more from his words? It is true that the drow and we surface elves share the same ancestors in our distant past. It is also true that other elves have done evil things and they were not drow. If a normally good elf can do evil things, does it not also seem logical that a normally evil drow might be able to be good?”

“Perhaps I shall go back into the village tomorrow and just observe without prejudging those who live there. What I saw today was beings I knew to be evil because of their race. I wasn’t looking at the individuals and who they were.”

Later on Sherwood lays out the next course of action. It seems sensible to the Elf Maiden and will save many tedious days of travel to reach Elcadan by land. She’s unsure of the presence of Lia and Talen, but given their relationship with Sherwood she makes no comment of it.

“I will be ready to depart as directed.”

“Tomorrow morning I think would be best,” Talen answers. “It’s about an hours walk to their village and best made during the day. After breakfast would be good for me.”

Talen is up early, as he doesn’t require much sleep. He spends some time studying his meager spell book before the mouth-watering smell of breakfast reaches him. Reaching the kitchen he finds that grandma has already made breakfast and Talen heartily digs in. Once finished, he’ll clean up and then goes out to meet the day.

He had planned on taking Yusef to the Hutaaka village, but is intercepted by his sister first.
Lia wrote:Afterward Lia can be seen working through her sword routines to sharpen her skills. Upon seeing Talen she will ask, "Care for a little work out brother?" as she motions with her sword.

Later on in the day, Talen listens intently as Sherwood speaks to them. His jaw drops in surprise when it is confirmed that they are related. The human side of his family has just expanded greatly and he looks forward to meeting his other kin.

Once more Talen’s jaw drops in surprise when Sherwood says that he’ll be teleporting them out of the valley! Obviously, he is a far more powerful mage then he seems! There is much to learn from his cousin.

“I have no immediate questions”, Talen says, but he’s really too excited to think straight. Soon he’ll get the chance to meet more relatives. After getting back from the trip to the Hutaakan village, Talen will shave and bath and make himself presentable to meet this Jallarzi Salavarian. He’ll make the trip to the location indicated in the forest with his sister when she is ready to go.

Kylie:

Kylie is happy that Nariya has decided to join her and Lilia. This way, they have time to chat and get to know each other a little more.
Nariya wrote:She considers opening up a conversation on something that is sure to start tempers flaring, but she feels it's a valid question. "So what do you two think? "Sherwood has never led me astray in the past. Do you think he makes the right decisions now as well?"
Lilia describes her own feelings on the matter in some detail. Her mixed emotions reflect Kylie's own to some extent, though for different reasons. Still, Kylie feels some reassurance in the elf's thinking.

"I have known Sherwood for many years now, and neither he nor his cousin Jallarzi - who was my mentor in the magical arts - have ever steered me wrong. Still, I have a hard time accepting this situation. Everything I have learned over my lifetime tells me not to believe in the tale we're being told. I don't really know what it would take for me to be able to trust any of them. In some ways, it seems almost like I would be betraying my mother to not be suspicious of them - particularly of the drow and their kin. I just don't know what to think or feel, and the whole situation makes me very uneasy.

"Lilia, I would like to join you for that trip in the morning, if I may. I need to ask Nightmist a question, anyway..."

The next morning, Sherwood arrives at their camp in the forest and lays out his plan. More surprising is the information regarding Lia and Talen being his cousins! For a few moments, Kylie feels almost like her heart is going to stop or something.

"Your-- Your cousins?" she says, not really asking so much as expressing her incredulity. Pausing a moment, Kylie continues, "I suppose it makes sense for you to bring them along, then...

"It will be good to see Jallarzi again, even though I suspect the visit will be short. Sunset is fine, as I would like to do a few more things here before we go."

When the time comes, Kylie will accompany Lilia back into town. She will take some time exploring around and watching the inhabitants as they go about their lives and interactions with one another. It is hard not to mentally label them and stick them in boxes, but she tries. Still, it gives her a bit of a creepy feeling just being around all of these members of so many malicious races.

Eventually, she will seek out Nightmist. "Excuse me, Nightmist, I was wondering if you might allow me a question?"

If Nightmist agrees, Kylie will explain her situation. "My mother was an elf known as Allurien Cortheledran of the Clan Aelrhed. When I was still young, she became sick and departed with some other elves to receive proper treatment. However, we were not allowed to accompany her and have never heard from her again.

"Since then, I haven't been able to learn anything of her fate. No elf I have spoken with has admitted even having heard of her clan. I am quickly losing hope of ever finding her, and am wondering if you might have any ideas of where I might turn?"

"In the morning it is, then," Yusef replies. "I will see you then." It seems that he will get to both meet the Hutaaka and see the temple. Should be an exciting day.

Yusef gets a good night's sleep and wakes refreshed. Nightmist has politely provided breakfast, and Yusef eats moderately after thanking her. Excited by the plans for the day, he goes in search of the twins, finding them outside preparing to spar. At his request, they agree to allow him to watch. Their styles are somewhat crude and lumbering, but appear effective.

He spies Yusef watching Talen and Lia sparing with swords in the courtyard. Sherwood watches for a moment and then will ask if they know where the others are.
"I believe they spent the night in the woods, over in that direction," Yusef answers. "Sorry, I don't know exactly where, though." When asked, he accompanies Sherwood to find the missing elven ladies.

Yusef nods contemplatively as Sherwood fills them in on the plan for continuing from here. It seems a good plan, and the teleportation that Sherwood speaks so casually of sounds like a very interesting new experience for the monk.

At the information about the twins, Yusef smiles. It is quite a wondrous coincidence that they are related to Sherwood. And having them along should be very helpful in the mission before them.

"No questions here, Sherwood. I'll be ready to go when the time comes."

Once Sherwood has had his chance to talk with the twins, Yusef approaches them. "Are you ready to give me the tour?" They still have the entire afternoon, so hopefully that will be enough.
