New Frontiers #58

The Orc Caves:

The battle against the orc horde and their dragon master has ended. Ember has fled, whisked away by protective magic before he could be slain. The surviving goblinoids have simply fled for their lives deeper into the Underdark.

The Guardians cautiously move forth to explore the cave and locate the portal Opikus/Ember used to arrive here while Polymorphed into human form. Right after that, a Flying Carpet appears bearing Lord Sharadin, his daughters Terry and Sherry, along with a silver-haired elf maiden by the name of Silvarn.

Lord Sharadin told the group how they came to be in Corunglain and that Victor the 8th has taken the throne and is now the new King of Cynalon. He awaits the group's report up in the Duke’s Star-Shaped Fortress. Introductions and greetings are made to all.

To his fellow lords, Sharadin will say, “Our new king has planned for this day for many years. He’s kept tabs on most of the younger generation of lords. He’s aware of all of your accomplishments and has plans for each of you. He’ll want to speak to each of you personally once we are finished here.”
Grondar wrote:Having done what he can for their comrades, Grondar moves to join the group. Approaching the flying carpet from the rear, he moves around to the front. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Lord Sharadin," he says with a bow. "Your reputation is well known even among the dwarves. I am Grondar Foehammer, priest of the Revered Mother, Berronar Truesilver." He gestures to the two young women talking to Chareos. "I'm afraid I didn't hear the names of these lovely young ladies who travel with you..."
“A Priest of Berronar,” Lord Sharadin notes approvingly. “I’ve heard of your goddess before. Well met. The girls are my daughters, Sherry and Terry. They are both sorceresses in training.”
Grondar wrote:Turning, Grondar bows to the elven woman as well. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Silvarn. I take it you have some experience with the great worm." Her answer to Validar's question answers his as well.
“We’ve battled before,” Silvarn states. “He’s a slippery foe with the magic he has at his disposal.”
Grondar wrote:"Lord Sharadin, if I may. We have wounded and two are beyond all but the greatest of restorative magicks. I myself escaped the battle unscathed, but have a duty to our injured. Yet, despite most of my patron's blessings being used up, I feel that going with you is what Berronar would want. Is there anyone who can take on the responsibility for getting our casualties to those who can help them?"
“Place the dead on the Flying Carpet,” Sharadin will say without hesitation. “My daughters can fly them back to the Duke’s Fortress where they can be Raised. Numerous healers were brought with us to help in this time of crisis. The carpet can only hold four beings safely, so they will have to return before any others can be transported out of this foul caves.”

(Assuming that this is agreeable, Lyonessa and Ivy are placed on the Flying Carpet and Sherry and Terry will raise up and fly back up the tunnel to the surface. The carpet can carry some of the smaller items liberated from the orcs too.)
Argent wrote:“I will make the attempt, milord.” Argent will set her Bag of Holding on the ground and start to fish through it for her Crystal Ball. Then she’ll use a spare dress to make a holder for the ball and try to locate the dragon through it.
Seeing Argent bring her Crystal Ball out, Sharadin will say, “Don’t bother, Argent. If Ember could be located so easily, this would have been over decades ago. The monster is protected from scrying and location spells.”

Once ready, the group crosses the cavern to the location of the portal. The arrival side of the Mirror of Mental Prowess is normally invisible to the naked eye. However the haze in the cave flows around the opening, making it stand out. Silvarn leads the way through the mirror, followed by Lords Sharadin, Validar, Acerion, and Corley. Everyone else going on this trip follows.

Valena, Rathlar, and Arocken remain behind to secure this side of the portal. The black tabby Onyx rests comfortably in Valena’s arms purring contentedly.

Through the Mirror:

The change is dramatic for those who step through the mirror. The foul smell and haze are gone and you’re in what appears to be a study. The chamber is thirty feet wide and forty feet long. The ceiling is twenty feet overhead. Elegant cedar panels cover the lower six feet of the walls and it gives the chamber a pleasant aroma. Many fine rugs cover the floor. The rest of the walls, floor, and ceiling appear to have been carved out of a translucent substance. (Those with the necessary skills will find this to be crystal quartz.) Daylight fills the room from the upper part of the walls and ceiling, while an eerie orange/red glow emanates from the floor around the rugs.

Directly across from the mirror, which is a free-standing floor model encased in a finely crafted wooden frame, is a huge black crystal that seems to have been carved into the shape of a demonic looking mouth. The black crystal is ten feet wide and ten feet high and seems to be carved from black quartz. While the outside of the demons mouth is translucent, the inside of the maw is an inky black in color.

A large fireplace takes up much of the wall to your left. A roaring fire is burning, providing heat and more light for the chamber. The hearth is open in the back, and you can see another vast chamber through it. A door to the left of the fireplace appears to allow entry to the chamber seen through the hearth. The fire is too large to try to pass by and not get burned to reach the next chamber.

Beside the mirror and off to the right is a stool and artist easel. There is a paintbrush there, but no paints or easel. No canvas rests on the easel.

On the wall to your right there is an archway leading to another chamber. Those looking into this chamber see a room about half the size of the study. Rows of bookshelves fill the room and most of the shelves are filled with tomes of all shapes and sizes. Oddly enough, what appears to be frost covers everything in the room except the books. Those trying to pass through the archway find an invisible force prevents them. Those who examine the archway closely will find a small keyhole on one side. Resting on the cushion of a nearby chair is a small silver key.

A large oaken desk with a matching cushioned chair fills the area between the archway and the strange black quartz carving. Numerous books and papers are piled upon the desk.

Silvarn will move about the room as if searching for something.

“He’s not presently here,” the elf maiden will say. “But he was recently. This is not the location where he teleported to.”

The Other Side:

Led by Hasverion, Lyonessa and Ivy start to cross the great arrival plaza in the City of the Dead. They pass more orcs, trolls, and other creatures that they’ve only heard of in myth or legend and even pass things that they’ve never even thought could exist.

“The variety of life is wide and vast across the mutliverse,” Hasverion will remark upon noticing their stares. “Your world is only one of billions where life exists. The power of your gods is felt across the entire multiverse and the number of their followers is so great that the number is almost beyond comprehension. To have received the direct attention of your gods is a rare and great honor.”

“Our destination is where you were being called to. There will be those there who can help us resolve this situation to your satisfaction.”

It’s true. The direction that you are proceeding in is the same as the one you felt the summoning towards earlier. As you move along the crowd begins to thin out and you finally arrive to the edge of the great plaza. Numerous other beings are walking in the same direction, although now they are primarily human and other familiar races. (Elves, dwarves, etc.)

A wide street with numerous great buildings on either side comes into view. Upon first glance, they appear to be grand temples to the various deities of Arret.

“The calls you felt were your summons to your proper places in the afterlife. On this street are temples to the gods you are familiar with. Lyonessa here is being drawn to Mystra’s temple, while you Ivy are heading towards Azrella’s. These temples take in the new arrivals of their faiths and prepare them for the next step of their journey. Typically, new arrivals will stay here for a time so that they can adjust to their new circumstances. It also gives their mortal companions time to bring their friends back if they are able.”

Coming to a stop, Hasverion will gesture towards two of the temples here. “We have arrived. Mystra and Azrella are closely allied and their temples are next to each other. Inside are other followers of your own faiths who can vouch for my sincerity.”

The temples are the largest that either woman has ever seen and perfectly reflect their understandings of their faiths. There are greeters at the entrance to both temples. The ones in front of Azrella’s are all female, while the ones in front of Mystra are both male and female. Azrella’s greeters are all human, while Mystra’s are of mixed races, including a few elves and half-elves. As you watch, other beings are stepping up the entrances of both temples, are greeted by the various priests, and then led inside.

After a pause, Hasverion say, “Go ahead. Go in. You have nothing to fear. Speak to your brethren so that your minds can be put at ease. I’ll wait here for your return.”

Laucian

As Sharadin and the others begin to move through the portal Laucian makes his bow ready for anything as he walks cautiously through himself. For a few fleeting moments he thinks his senses are playing tricks on him as he takes in his new surroundings. ‘ A study?’ is all he can say to himself as he looks to the books lining the walls.
“He’s not presently here,” the elf maiden will say. “But he was recently. This is not the location where he teleported to.”
Silvarn’s words strick him quite oddly and he can’t help but to ask, though quite politely, “How can you be sure? Are you a tracker of sorts?” Perhaps the Elfin maiden has traits he never dared think an elf would possess. His eyes fall upon the statue of a demon and Laucian eyes it with contempt though they only linger for a moment.

“If he is not here perhaps he left something for intruders in his stead?” he will ask the others. He will then speak to Sharadin as well as Silvarn, “Ehlonna does grant a spell that I could bestow on one of our scouts that will hide their scent as well as tracks.”

Seeing Lord Corley injured Laucian will ask if he can see to his wounds.
Til Ehlonna's will be done

Chareos

Walking through the haze of the caverns toward the portal Chareos follows the others into uncertainty, only to emerge in a Study?

Chareos rubs his eyes expecting it to be an illusion of sorts. Though as he and the others move about Silvarn makes it clear that Ember is not here though was recently.

Once the knowledge of Ember's whereabouts or lack thereof is assessed Chareos looks about the chamber. His eyes fall upon an Archway; beyond it countless books and tomes lie in a frosty prison. Stepping forward in an attempt to enter the room he comes to the harsh reality that there is some magical force preventing him.

He begins studying the archway and a small keyhole is present, not too far away a silver key is to be found.
Leaving it be, he will alert Validar / Sherra of his findings.

Looking about the room he cannot believe a dragon would make this its home. It is then his eyes fall upon the table and books and paper above it. He wonders what they read but keeps his curiousity in check until the room is secure. And the Demon head behind it. Not liking the decoration Chareos will watch it for any movement, while saying to Sharadin and Argent, “I wonder if it is of Magical nature?”

Grondar:
Aria wrote:“As my pappy used to say, ‘Thems good eats!”
Grondar smiles. "I'll take your - and his - word for it, milady. He must have been a great warrior to raise a fine daughter such as yourself."
Argent wrote:“That is Lord Sharadin, the Archmage of Cynalon. The twins are his daughters, Sherry and Terry. They are both mages as well. Lord Sharadin now controls Karn’s Keep, a giant-built fortress far to the east that was liberated by my previous adventuring band, the Company of the Sword.”
Grondar listens to Argent's introduction. "Thank you, Argent," he says.
Sharadin wrote:To his fellow lords, Sharadin will say, “Our new king has planned for this day for many years. He’s kept tabs on most of the younger generation of lords. He’s aware of all of your accomplishments and has plans for each of you. He’ll want to speak to each of you personally once we are finished here.”
Grondar overhears Lord Sharadin's words, but it means little to him. He's neither human nor a lord, and thus this King Victor is likely to have little interest in him.
Sharadin wrote:“A Priest of Berronar,” Lord Sharadin notes approvingly. “I’ve heard of your goddess before. Well met. The girls are my daughters, Sherry and Terry. They are both sorceresses in training.”
"Thank you, Lord Sharadin. Your knowledge must be broad indeed for you to be familiar with the dwarven gods." Grondar turns to the girls. "So you are the daughters of the archmage? I am very pleased to meet you as well. I am sure you are both very talented in your own right."
Silvarn wrote:“We’ve battled before,” Silvarn states. “He’s a slippery foe with the magic he has at his disposal.”
"Hopefully, with you and Lord Sharadin here, we can offset that advantage and prevent his escaping again."
Sharadin wrote:“Place the dead on the Flying Carpet,” Sharadin will say without hesitation. “My daughters can fly them back to the Duke’s Fortress where they can be Raised. Numerous healers were brought with us to help in this time of crisis. The carpet can only hold four beings safely, so they will have to return before any others can be transported out of this foul caves.”
"That is a very agreeable resolution, Lord Sharadin. Thank you. I will gladly accompany in pursuit of the dragon."
Aria wrote:“Then lets get going then! Me axe be ready to rend dragon hide!”

To Grondar she’ll add, “Looks like we might be having dragon steaks after all!”
Aria's words are like music to Grondar's ears. "I'm looking forward to it. I'll be right with you every step of the way."
Corley wrote:The great sword is there, as if there was ever any doubt. “Let us finish what we have started here this day! Let us deliver the head of this dragon to our new king!”
"You and your king are welcome to the head, my friend. All I want is a couple ribs, nicely basted and roasted over a nice fire..." Grondar grins at Corley and Aria.

As they prepare to depart, Grondar digs through his pack and pulls out the healing potions that Validar had mentioned earlier. He will offer them to any who are injured, starting with Lord Corley and Laucian.

It is not long before they are proceeding through the portal. Grondar stays close to Aria, as he enjoys her company immensely.

The transition from dark, smoke-laden cave to luxurious home is startling. Grondar looks around in amazement, trying to verify that he is really seeing what he thinks he is. Soon enough, he accepts the reality of their new location. "This is quite a place that Opikus, or Ember, has made for himself."

Silvarn announces that Ember is not there now and Grondar nods to himself.

The black crystal draws the dwarf's attention with it's depiction of a demon's mouth. Moving closer, he examines it carefully, dredging his memories for any indications of its nature or purpose. "Sharadin, could this be another portal of some kind?" It certainly seems big enough!

Lyonessa:

Lyonessa will listen as Hasverion explains about all the different worlds with all the different races. It's very fascinating as she tries to take it all in. The one thing that makes the wonderment a little hard to enjoy is that all of these beings have passed on from their mortal lives.

Soon they arive outside of the temples devoted to Azrella and Mystra. Lyonessa can feel the gentle pull and looks upon the structure with amazement.

After a pause, Hasverion say, “Go ahead. Go in. You have nothing to fear. Speak to your brethren so that your minds can be put at ease. I’ll wait here for your return.”

Lyonessa glances over at Ivy, and then makes her way to the temple entrance. She is uncertain about how aware the greeting priests will be of her arrival, although she guesses someone will know something. She will approach one of them and say, "Hello, I am Lyonessa." Uncertain of exactly what to say or do, she'll simply come forward with her question. "I'm wondering if someone can tell me exactly who that man who led us here is," she will ask with a glance towards Hasverion.

Lord Validar -

Lord Sharadin told the group how they came to be in Corunglain and that Victor the 8th has taken the throne and is now the new King of Cynalon. He awaits the group's report up in the Duke’s Star-Shaped Fortress. Introductions and greetings are made to all.

He’s aware of all of your accomplishments and has plans for each of you. He’ll want to speak to each of you personally once we are finished here.”

It is a sense of pride that the young noble lord feels at that statement. Lord Validar has met the Crown Prince briefly before. He is a good man and will make a good King. "We will be honored to be afforded this great priviledge."

"This sounds to me as a very acceptable solution to the situation," Lord Validar will respond. It does not take long for the group to transfer the bodies of their fallen comrades and soon Sharadin's daughters are on their way to the surface.

“I will make the attempt, milord.” Argent will set her Bag of Holding on the ground and start to fish through it for her Crystal Ball.

"Very well, you are certainly more knowledgeable about this subject than we," Lord Validar will say. "However, do you think I would be correct in saying that Ember is likely on his way to close that open portal? I do not think he can risk leaving an opening to Opikus' Tower available to his mortal enemies. We should make haste."

“Validar is correct, We should not linger until Ember is dealt a mortal blow.” Looking about the Library he will add, “Perhaps we should take the writings on the table, there maybe more to Ember’s plans besides Corunglain!” If no one objects he will move forward to the table and attempt to read what the book titles are and that is all. "Indeed it shall be a very fine honor," Acerion will reply. His long journey to paladinhood left him little time to meet many of the nobles of the land, let alone the Crown Prince. It seems that time is fast approaching a remedy to that however.

Acerion is a little surprised to arrive in what appears to be a private library and study. Apparently this dragon Ember goes through quite some trouble to pass off as the mage Opikus. After looking around and having the elven maiden Silvarn confirm the dragon is not nearby, Acerion notices the huge crystal carved into the semblance of a demon's mouth. He joins the dwarf Grondar in looking over it, seeing if it resembles anything he may know. "Not a pleasant way to travel if it is," Acerion will observe on Grondar's question about it being a portal.

Not having much else to do at the moment, Acerion will remain at the ready, his axe in hand, in case something springs on them unexpectantly.

Sherra:

Stepping through, Sherra is momentarily shocked at the drastic change of surroundings. Such lush furnishings is not what she expecting. Looking around quickly, this is the sort of set up she would love to get used to! Still, danger could be present and she keeps her eyes out for anything that could prove harmful to her and her companions.

All her time on board ships hasn't given her a very good experience with dealing with traps, although she wonders how a mage, or a dragon for that matter, would defend their belongings. As she looks about, Chareos points out a silver key laying in the open on the cushion of a chair. Doubtful it was left in any manner except deliberate, she moves up to examine it and the chair without touching either. Regardless of her findings, she will stress she doesn't like it one bit.

She will wait to see if anything else is discovered by mundane, magical or other means, and see what Lords Sharadin and Validar wish to do next.

Lord Validar -

Through the portal:

The other side of the portal is a welcome change from the choking smoke of the cavern and their recent battles. The chamber is quite opulent, with high ceilings and expensive accessories. The glow coming in through the crystal walls, ceiling and floor is strange to say the least. Lord Validar has his enchanted blade ready.

Silvarn will move about the room as if searching for something.

“He’s not presently here,” the elf maiden will say. “But he was recently. This is not the location where he teleported to.”

"He was not long on the battlefield with us. Likely, he was watching from this location. When his lieutenant Dek was felled, Opikus arrived in the cavern. Even then, at first his presence was only an illusion of sorts,: Validar will explain. "But that also means that he has not yet returned here. We should find a way to use this to our advantage."

"Lord Sharadin, you are certainly familiar with Ember's tactics, as are you Milady Silvarn. What can we expect from Ember at this point? He seems to be gravely wounded. That makes him likely to be both cautious, but even more dangerous."

"Have either of you any experience with the sort of traps or magick that the dragon prefers? The more we know the better. Also I think at this point it would be best if we did not split up much. No telling what we may run into."

“If he is not here perhaps he left something for intruders in his stead?” Laucian will ask the others. He will then speak to Sharadin as well as Silvarn, “Ehlonna does grant a spell that I could bestow on one of our scouts that will hide their scent as well as tracks.”

"I too am concerned that there may be dealy traps awaiting us. But to what extent? Certainly someone cannot be so paranoid as to trap every item in their home." Some of the group begin to explore the room, but wisely no one touches anything as yet.

Lord Validar looks about the chambers a bit, taking it all in. The demonic maw causes the noble lord to snear somewhat under his helmet. "What is your plan, Lord Sharadin?"

Argent:
Seeing Argent bring her Crystal Ball out, Sharadin will say, “Don’t bother, Argent. If Ember could be located so easily, this would have been over decades ago. The monster is protected from scrying and location spells.”
“I suspected as much,” Argent will quietly say as she packs up her Crystal Ball.

Like most of the others, Argent will be surprised to see what awaits them on the other side of the mirror. The Invoker will look around, taking in the mostly pleasant surroundings.

“I like it,” Argent will conclude. “Well, except for the icky demonic sculpture there. That’s really tacky.”

Moving towards the archway with the books, Argent is mildly disappointed to discover that an invisible force blocks the path.

“Whoever created this place did so for the long duration. Cold keeps books from wearing out too fast if they are specially treated. I’d love to see what he had in there.”

Argent notes the silver key, but controls herself from just picking it up. There will be time for that later on.

The large desk comes under inspection next. Much to her surprise, Chareos moves to examine the books!
Chareos wrote:“Perhaps we should take the writings on the table, there maybe more to Ember’s plans besides Corunglain!”
“I’d keep my hands off of those myself,” Argent says. “No telling what sort of protective magic might be involved here. Argent will look at the books and papers on the desk for a few moments, but will not touch them.

Moving onwards, Argent joins those by the giant demonic sculpture. Chareos wonders if its magical while Grondar wonders if its another portal.

“Judging by the lack of canvas in the room, I’d wager that it’s a magical rubbish bin filled with failed painting attempts,” Argent says with a smile.

Gathering with the others, Argent adds her two cents to the conversation. "That ranger fellow with the wolves said that he had heard of Opikus before. Based on what we’ve seen here, there must have been a real human Opikus who built all of this.” Argent gestures around her as she speaks those last words. “His fate was most likely to end up in Ember’s belly.”

“It also explains why Ember is not here. He simply would not fit in dragon form and could only visit here while Polymorphed for short durations. I would not expect to find many traps, at least not in this area. This was his home and likely sanctum. The traps would be encountered along the way here.”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

It is a sense of pride that the young noble lord feels at that statement. Lord Validar has met the Crown Prince briefly before. He is a good man and will make a good King. "We will be honored to be afforded this great privilege."
Lord Corley will try to conceal his surprise from hearing all of this. The Crown Prince was keeping tabs on him? Remarkable!

First Laucian, and then Grondar come forth asking to heal his wounds with spells and potions.

“I thank you both for your kind offers, but they are not necessary. My wounds will be healed as soon as we engage the dragon in battle again. Save your magicks for those who will need them instead of wasting them on me.”

"You and your king are welcome to the head, my friend. All I want is a couple ribs, nicely basted and roasted over a nice fire..." Grondar grins at Corley and Aria.
All this talk of dragon steaks has gotten the attention of Corley’s stomach. “I hope this doesn’t take too long. I’m starting to get hungry!’

Corley is stunned by the splendor on the other side of the mirror. “What is this place? Where is this place?”

Ivy:

Ivy walks along with Lyonessa and Hasverion. She stares in wonder at the unique creatures she sees along the way. However, it is a fleeting wonder, as it will not be remembered once our spirits are drawn back.

Finally we arrive at our destination. It is a large temple dedicated to Azrella! Another one dedicated to Mystra is right next door. Although Ivy never considered it before, it only makes sense to be greeted in the afterlife by others of your own faith.

At Hasverion’s guidance, Ivy walks up to the Azrellan Temple. “Greetings. I am Ivy and I hope one of you can answer my question. Have you ever heard of a Hasverion of Heironeous before?”

Aria Stonehand

Post by Aria Stonehand »

Aria:
Grondar smiles. "I'll take your - and his - word for it, milady. He must have been a great warrior to raise a fine daughter such as yourself."
“We Stonehands are known for our combat prowess. My father was known as Arak Stonehand. Most folks have heard of him. I’ve got a lot to live up to.”
"You and your king are welcome to the head, my friend. All I want is a couple ribs, nicely basted and roasted over a nice fire..." Grondar grins at Corley and Aria.
“Aye! It’s the meat that we’ll settle for! What happens to the bones matters not to me. Although, I‘m told that dragon hide can make nice armor.”
The transition from dark, smoke-laden cave to luxurious home is startling. Grondar looks around in amazement, trying to verify that he is really seeing what he thinks he is. Soon enough, he accepts the reality of their new location. "This is quite a place that Opikus, or Ember, has made for himself."
Aria takes in her new surroundings and isn’t quite as impressed as the others are.

“Bah! A little too soft for my tastes. This is not a place for a dwarf. Although, you could do some serious roasting on that fire! Quit hiding and get out here dragon! Take your medicine like the lanky lizard you are!”

As they prepare to depart, Grondar digs through his pack and pulls out the healing potions that Validar had mentioned earlier. He will offer them to any who are injured, starting with Lord Corley and Laucian.

As Grondar offers the potion Laucian hesitates and does not accept it. “Perhaps we should use them when the battle with the dragon begins. With only you and I to heal the others; perhaps it should be given to the other archers or mages to use on who's needs are most dire.”
Argent’s word bore deep within as the thought of being eaten alive strikes him. A horrible fate indeed!!!

Corley Wrote
“I thank you both for your kind offers, but they are not necessary. My wounds will be healed as soon as we engage the dragon in battle again. Save your magicks for those who will need them instead of wasting them on me.”
“As you wish my friend,” he says in reply and readies his bow with an arrow.

“I’d keep my hands off of those myself,” Argent says. “No telling what sort of protective magic might be involved here. Argent will look at the books and papers on the desk for a few moments, but will not touch them.
Chareos takes Argent’s warning and does not touch them, though he will reply to her. “ I wouldn’t dare disturb them until I knew they were safe,” he will say rather defensively. “This attack must have been planned for some time, given the range of humanoids that we fought, we do not yet know of the scale it was conceived,” he will add.

Chareos will make a note to look for once the dragon is dealt with and any protective spells removed. So in the end the notes and books will remain undisturbed by his hand and eye.

Lord Validar -

First Laucian, and then Grondar come forth asking to heal his wounds with spells and potions.

“I thank you both for your kind offers, but they are not necessary. My wounds will be healed as soon as we engage the dragon in battle again. Save your magicks for those who will need them instead of wasting them on me.”

"With luck we will have a still gravely wounded dragon and not one who has been fully healed," Lord Validar adds. "We should try to find the great Wyrm as quickly as possible to avoid any unecessary surprises."

As Grondar offers the potion Laucian hesitates and does not accept it. “Perhaps we should use them when the battle with the dragon begins. With only you and I to heal the others; perhaps it should be given to the other archers or mages to use on who's needs are most dire.”

"I agree with Laucian. At this point, we are relatively healthy and the potions may prove more useful in the near or distant future. For the moment, it would be a good decision to give them to the archers in case someone is in dire need. I would rather see spells used for healing if such is necessary now, as they are a renewable resource, while the potions are not."

"If such is the case, then likely Ember is prepared to return here. He cannot risk the gate being open for long I would think."

Corley is stunned by the splendor on the other side of the mirror. “What is this place? Where is this place?”
"Most likely it was created or found by the mage Opikus and then stolen away by the dragon Ember. As to where it is, that is certainly a question only Sharadin or Silvarn among us may know."

"I thought your name sounded familiar, Aria. Arak was a member of the Swords of Cynalon. Two of my ancestors were members of that illustrious band, as well as the mysterious Nightmist that our friends Lord Sherwood and Kylie are currently searching for."

Pre-Departure:

Thank you, Lord Sharadin. Your knowledge must be broad indeed for you to be familiar with the dwarven gods." Grondar turns to the girls. "So you are the daughters of the Archmage? I am very pleased to meet you as well. I am sure you are both very talented in your own right."
“I’ve made a point to learn about the dwarves and the elves as they are our neighbors,” Sharadin states. “Including their various religions and ways of life. Fascinating stuff.”

“Nice to meet you,” one of the sisters says.

“But we’ve still got a lot to learn,” the other adds.

“You have the gist of the matter, Lord Validar, and the reason for haste on my part. Ember has made a mistake by leaving it open. We must make him pay for it before he can close it.”

Opikus’ Lair:

The Guardians safely pass through the mirror and arrive in what must be Opikus resplendent study. It also appears that no one else is around. The conversation turns on what to do next.

“I would tend to agree with Argent’s analysis of the situation. This was the home of the real Opikus and Ember has just been using it for his own needs. I would further speculate that any traps that were here were probably triggered by Ember himself. Subtly is not one of his traits.”
Lord Validar wrote:"What is your plan, Lord Sharadin?"
“Where ever his Contingency spell took him, Ember must return here to seal the portal if he wishes to continue to use this place as a base of operations. However, he is very intelligent. If he felt he could not accomplish this task, he might stay away. Regardless, we must operate on the idea that Ember is coming here and soon.”

“The first order of business is to secure the premises. The warriors and the scouts should perform that task. We need to figure out the ways in and out of this area so that they can be guarded against Ember’s return. Then we can further delve into the mysteries of this place.”

Lord Sharadin casts Detect Magic and scans the immediate area. “The door by the fireplace is not magical. I believe it safe to use, so go forth and explore. I’ll scan for magic as we go.”

While this is going on, Laucian has a word with Silvarn.
Silvarn’s words strike him quite oddly and he can’t help but to ask, though quite politely, “How can you be sure? Are you a tracker of sorts?” Perhaps the Elfin maiden has traits he never dared think an elf would possess.
“I have my ways,” the older elf will simply say. “Yes, you could say that I am a tracker of sorts.”
“If he is not here perhaps he left something for intruders in his stead?” he will ask the others. He will then speak to Sharadin as well as Silvarn, “Ehlonna does grant a spell that I could bestow on one of our scouts that will hide their scent as well as tracks.”
“I wouldn’t bother,” Silvarn states. “All dragons have superior senses. Even if you could mask one’s scent, he could still hear someone breathing nearby. It’s too late already, as he could smell our presence.”

The scouts and warriors move out deeper into the lair while Sharadin scans for magic within the study.

“The library doorway is indeed magical as is the silver key nearby. Most likely the key is used to open the door to allow access to the books. I don’t believe that there is any danger there.”

Turning to the desk, Sharadin looks it over carefully. “My friends, we have multiple spellbooks on top of the desk. Ember must have had to be polymorphed to make use of them since they were made by a human. There are eight spell books in all. They do not appear to be magically trapped.”

Continuing on, Lord Sharadin finishes his inspection of the study. “The only other magic in this room apart from the mirror is this demon head. I believe that your guess is correct, Grondar. That blackness in the demon’s mouth is magical and most likely a way in and out of this chamber.”

Exploring:

The door out of the study is free from traps as Lord Sharadin suspected. Behind the door is a vast dining hall that measures 40’ wide and 80’ long. A massive feast table (20’ x 40’) occupies the center of the room. Beautiful china and silverware sets are laid out on the table and must be very expensive. An elegant crystal chandelier hangs over the table. The other side of the fireplace is in this room.

The lower part of the dining hall walls are paneled in cedar much like the study. The upper parts of the walls are all crystalline and daylight floods in. Rugs cover the floor here and there and the orangish-red glow is still there.

Sharadin will declare the dining hall clean of magic.

At far side of the dining hall is where the opulence unexpectedly ends. There, it seems that much of the far wall has been smashed out to create a large opening. Beyond this opening is a huge circular room that Ember could easily fit into.

What purpose the room originally served is unknown. There is a 20’ walkway around the outer edge of the room, while the middle is occupied by a bowl-like depression. The inside of this bowl is filled with what at first glance appears to be thousands of small crystals. Those who inspect these crystals closer, and have the proper skills, will realize that these crystals are actually raw, uncut diamonds!

“This is Ember’s bed”, Silvarn will announce as she looks around. “Reds always liked sleeping on their treasure.”

Sharadin will detect multiple sources of magic from underneath the bed of diamonds.

Two untrapped doors lead out of the dining hall. One goes into a good-sized extravagant kitchen. Numerous sources of magic are found in the kitchen, including coming from the stove itself, from most of the cauldrons, and from some of the utensils.

Off of the kitchen is a small pantry filled with sacks of food, hanging haunches of salted meat, and casks of water and wine. The entire room feels colder than the kitchen and you can see your breath inside. The entire pantry radiates magic.

The other door off the dining hall leads into Opikus’ richly appointed bedroom. The first thing that those who enter get is the smell of death. Near the middle of the room is the decomposing body of a red-haired, white-robed man lying in his own dried blood. Those with the necessary skills will conclude that numerous spear wounds killed the man. There are many bloody tracks around the body and those with tracking skills will agree that kobolds make the tracks. There is no magic within the bedroom.

Two more doors lead out of the bedroom. One goes into a large walk-in closet filled with magnificent clothing of all colors and materials. None of it is magical.

The other door leads into a magical bathroom. There is a pleasant smell to the room and a magically-heated bath. Bodily waste is cleaned up by magic.

There appears to be no other way out of this series of chambers other than passing through the mirror and perhaps the demon’s mouth.

The Other Side:

Far away in the City of the Dead, Hasverion has led Ivy and Lyonessa to their respective temples. There he hopes to have fellow followers of the priestesses' faith vouch for him. Unsure at first, Lyonessa and Ivy go forth to the greeters at their temples.
“Hello, I am Lyonessa." Uncertain of exactly what to say or do, she'll simply come forward with her question. "I'm wondering if someone can tell me exactly who that man who led us here is," she will ask with a glance towards Hasverion.
“Greetings Lyonessa,” a male elf will say as he steps forward to greet her. There is a warm smile of understanding on his face. “I bid you welcome, but you are not supposed to be here. You have many wonderful songs yet to compose and you haven’t rescued your sister yet.”

The elf will cast a glance at Hasverion and then turn back to Lyonessa. “That is Hasverion, a celestial steward of Heironeous. Most everyone knows who he is. He is an Aasimon and hence incapable of lying or cheating. He is perhaps the most honorable being I have ever met. I would gladly put my life in his hands should need be.”

An older woman with graying hair greets Ivy with a hug. “Welcome home, sister, but I do not believe that you are meant to be here. You have much yet to do back on the Prime. Heard of Hasverion? Who hasn’t? He’s a Celestial Steward of Heironeous. He takes orders directly from that worthy god. He is impeccably honest and trustworthy to a fault.”

Laucian does not say a reply but debates whether or not to ask her to teach him these ways. Though he thinks better of asking as there is much work to be done. Another time perhaps.

“I wouldn’t bother,” Silvarn states. “All dragons have superior senses. Even if you could mask one’s scent, he could still hear someone breathing nearby. It’s too late already, as he could smell our presence.”

Having never encounter a dragon before and given Silvarn and Sharadin’s knowledge of the Dragon, Laucian will believe what is offered, never second guessing it as it may save his life.

Before long the scouts and warriors move forward as the others search the secured rooms.
With his sword drawn he looks about cautiously. As he walks in from the dining room to the bedroom the smell of death nearly makes his stomach turn. Fighting back the urge he moves forward into the room and notes a decomposing body on the floor surrounded by a pool of dried blood.

“Now we know of Opikus’ fate.”

Laucian crouches down by the red-haired body and looks at the wounds, several stabbing marks lay about the man’s frame. It is then that Laucian notices the footprints abound. As he looks he begins to trance the footprints with his finger trying to make them clearer to his trained eye.

“Looks like Kobolds did this. Perhaps they sprung on him as he was about to sleep.” after a few moments his mind begins thinking of their relative size and says, “The question remains how did they get in?” the last being more rhetorical then anything.

“Aren’t kobolds miners of a certain degree?” he will ask Grondar and Aria. “Perhaps there are concealed entryways and exits.”

Laucian will move to the dining room/ treasure room and walk the outside walls in the hopes of finding a concealed entry point.

A bit of a roadblock...

Lord Validar -

"Very well, you are certainly more knowledgeable about this subject than we," Lord Validar will say. "However, do you think I would be correct in saying that Ember is likely on his way to close that open portal? I do not think he can risk leaving an opening to Opikus' Tower available to his mortal enemies. We should make haste."

“You have the gist of the matter, Lord Validar, and the reason for haste on my part. Ember has made a mistake by leaving it open. We must make him pay for it before he can close it.”

"My sentiments exactly. Unfortunately we do not know if he can arrive in dragon from or needs to change to human form to do so. If the later, we might have more time. Another thing to consider is that as we nearly killed him ourselves and now have you and Silvarn's power at the ready, he may be willing to sacrifice the base of operations in exchange for his life. At least until he is fully prepared to return. It would leave him likely vulnerable. How cautious is our foe?"

Once across the portal:
“The first order of business is to secure the premises. The warriors and the scouts should perform that task. We need to figure out the ways in and out of this area so that they can be guarded against Ember’s return. Then we can further delve into the mysteries of this place.”

"Agreeable."

The groups move out to explore the area and Sharadin looks for magick. There seems to be a significant spell collection and the demon mouth is some form of portal as well, according to Sharadin. Validar looks at the 'portal' with a furrowed brow. "Let's keep an eye on that thing then."

The treasure that they find in Ember's lair is significant. Although it appears to require a significant amount of work to refine the diamonds. Still the amount recovered will be incredible and can do much good for the kingdom. "This is how Ember gets in and out of here. We should put some scouts here hidden to prepare for his arrival."

The real Opikus is eventually found. The smell of death is indeed oppressive, but Validar does not show any signs of discomfort. He has experienced worse before.

Validar is somewhat skeptical about the source of the killing. "Clearly a mage of his calibur would not be taken unawares by a Kobold Commando squad. He must have been betrayed by an ally, who used Kobolds in some manner, possibly including something else perhaps invisible. Perhaps he was struck by the dreaded black water or the same potion used to incapacitate the leaders of Corunglain."

Argent in Dreamland

Post by Argent »

Argent:

The explorations continue and it seems that a new wonder is found with each room! Lord Sharadin determines that the silver key most likely opens up the frozen library of books. Something to be investigated later.
Turning to the desk, Sharadin looks it over carefully. “My friends, we have multiple spellbooks on top of the desk. Ember must have had to be polymorphed to make use of them since they were made by a human. There are eight spell books in all. They do not appear to be magically trapped.”
Argent turns away from the frozen library upon hearing that. “EIGHT SPELL BOOKS!! Oh my! What wonders must lie within those pages… Say, if these are the same books used by Ember, then it almost guarantees that he’ll be coming here as fast as he is able. Perhaps we should get them out of here or move them to a different location?”

“With all these books it looks like I won’t be getting much sleep anytime soon…”
Continuing on, Lord Sharadin finishes his inspection of the study. “The only other magic in this room apart from the mirror is this demon head. I believe that your guess is correct, Grondar. That blackness in the demon’s mouth is magical and most likely a way in and out of this chamber.”
“If this thing is some sort of portal, then it tells volumes about the real Opikus. He was pretty demented to even consider using such a thing as a portal. Perhaps it was a good thing that Ember ate him!”

It’s an effort, but Argent drags herself out of the study and into the large dining hall. The beautiful chandelier and the place settings get her attention. She’ll examine them a bit closer.

“Oh my… This stuff is top quality! It’s worth a small fortune! You know, I really like this place. Can I have it?”

And it just gets better as the dragon’s nest is found and Ember seems to have used raw diamonds as bedding! Bending down, Argent will pick a few up to examine.

“Have I mentioned that I really, really like this place? A bed of diamonds? It’s almost unimaginable! There must be thousands of them! Another small fortune! And there are multiple sources of magic from underneath? Someone pinch me. This has to be a dream!”

Even if this Opikus was demented, he certainly had good taste in some areas and liked to live in style. The kitchen further impresses Argent. It seems to have numerous magical time-saving implements. Even better there’s a full pantry too.

To the dwarves Argent will say, “If you two do get your dragon ribs and steaks, I’ll be happy to cook them up in this kitchen. It’s got about everything you need in it!”

The bedroom is found and it’s huge. Unfortunately, it also has a dead body in it so that makes it stink a bit.

“Apart from the corpse, this is very nice. Plenty of closet space and even an enchanted bath. After all this fighting and smoke I’m ready for a nice hot soak. When can I move in?”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Though as tempted as he is to look at the spell books that Sharadin has deemed safe to read, Chareos fights back the feeling of reading them all. Instead he merely looks at the notes and other book titles on the table, hoping that perhaps there is something there of value as well.

“Perhaps we should move them so if Ember does try to escape he cannot get his hands on them in flight. It would limit his magic abilities if he were to flee again.”

As they make their tour of the tower Chareos is very impressed. Perhaps he will have a residence like this sometime in the future.

When they find the dragon's trove Chareos lets out a whistle; never has he seen so many trinkets of value in one place until now.
Argent Said:

Lyonessa is a bit shocked at what the elf tells her. Knowing she's not supposed to have perished yet, and what she's going to accomplish before she does! She's about to comment, but then remembers what she was told that she would be forgetting all of this anyway.

The elf will cast a glance at Hasverion and then turn back to Lyonessa. “That is Hasverion, a celestial steward of Heironeous. Most everyone knows who he is. "Oh my," Lyonessa says, slightly embarassed at having questioned Hasverion's intentions before. "Well then, thank you very much. I look forward to maybe seeing you again, although not too soon, with Mystra's blessings," she says with a warm smile.

Before leaving, she will offer up a prayer to her goddess and take a small amount of time to marvel at such a wonderous temple. She will not keep Hasverion waiting any longer than that however.

Returning to him, Lyonessa will say humbly, "I'm sorry to have had any doubts of your regal and honorable nature. I will carry your message for you in whatever means you need to impart it to me."

Extinguishing the Smoldering Ember

Grondar's eyes widen in surprise. "I'm sorry, milady. I recognised your clan name, but didn't realize that you were Arak's own daughter. Please forgive me," he says to Aria with a bow. "I have no doubt that even Arak Stonehand is proud of what a fine warrior you've become."
Sharadin wrote:“I’ve made a point to learn about the dwarves and the elves as they are our neighbors,” Sharadin states. “Including their various religions and ways of life. Fascinating stuff.”
"I believe that we all benefit from knowing more about one another. If you don't mind me saying so, your wisdom speaks well of you, Lord Sharadin."
Sharadin's Daughters wrote:“Nice to meet you,” one of the sisters says.

“But we’ve still got a lot to learn,” the other adds.
"I have no doubt that you'll live up to your father's legacy in time," Grondar replies.
Acerion wrote:After looking around and having the elven maiden Silvarn confirm the dragon is not nearby, Acerion notices the huge crystal carved into the semblance of a demon's mouth. He joins the dwarf Grondar in looking over it, seeing if it resembles anything he may know. "Not a pleasant way to travel if it is," Acerion will observe on Grondar's question about it being a portal.
"I don't really know about that, but it is certianly unpleasant to look upon."

When Sherra steps through the portal, Grondar looks over at her. "<How are you holding up, my friend,>" he asks in dwarven.
Argent wrote:“Judging by the lack of canvas in the room, I’d wager that it’s a magical rubbish bin filled with failed painting attempts,” Argent says with a smile.
Argent's comment is greeted by a deep chuckle from the dwarven priest. "Why, I think you must be right, lady Argent. By time we're through here, we may have a few other things to toss in, like dragon bones..."
“Bah! A little too soft for my tastes. This is not a place for a dwarf. Although, you could do some serious roasting on that fire! Quit hiding and get out here dragon! Take your medicine like the lanky lizard you are!”
Aria's enthusiasm and humor are most refreshing. "I doubt the cowardly beast will dare to come anywhere within range of your mighty axe, lady Aria."

Grondar listens as Lord Sharadin checks the area for magic and weighs in with his thoughts regarding Ember and his confiscated home. It doesn't take them long to explore the entire dwelling; while the others do so, Grondar remains near the demon-mouth statue in case anything unfortunate occurs. The report of what they find is fascinating. Herein are many wonders and great riches; much of the place is magically enhanced to achieve greater comfort for the owner. Grondar suspects that there are many who would kill to own such a magnificent home. Hopefully, Argent isn't included in that number, though it is clear that she dearly wishes this place to be hers. Personally, Grondar agrees with Aria that it is far to soft and pampered for any self-respecting dwarf.
Continuing on, Lord Sharadin finishes his inspection of the study. “The only other magic in this room apart from the mirror is this demon head. I believe that your guess is correct, Grondar. That blackness in the demon’s mouth is magical and most likely a way in and out of this chamber.”
"I guess then that the real question is where it leads, and whether Ember may use it to return here. It appears to be the only other entrance or exit from this place.
“Aren’t kobolds miners of a certain degree?” he will ask Grondar and Aria. “Perhaps there are concealed entryways and exits.”
"While their skill is certainly limited, they do have the knowledge to build crude tunnels and such. I doubt they could conceal an entry with any skill, though."
To the dwarves Argent will say, “If you two do get your dragon ribs and steaks, I’ll be happy to cook them up in this kitchen. It’s got about everything you need in it!”
"That sounds great, Argent, but don't forget about Aria's secret sauce. I'm quite anxious to give that a try."

Ivy:
An older woman with graying hair greets Ivy with a hug. “Welcome home, sister, but I do not believe that you are meant to be here. You have much yet to do back on the Prime. Heard of Hasverion? Who hasn’t? He’s a Celestial Steward of Heironeous. He takes orders directly from that worthy god. He is impeccably honest and trustworthy to a fault.”
A noticeable look of surprise and embarrassment comes to Ivy’s face as she hears that Hasverion is none less than a Celestial Steward of Heironeous! Lord Acerion’s father is something akin to an angelic being!

“Oh dear”, Ivy finally manages to mumble. “It appears that my fears were totally misplaced. Thank you for your assistance. Perhaps one day far from now we shall meet again.”

Ivy slowly makes her way back to where she left Hasverion, her mind awhirl with what she’s just learned. The handsome and dashing Lord Acerion is something far more than mortal…

Once back, Ivy will say, “It appears that I owe you an apology, Hasverion of Heironeous. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for tolerating my foolishness. You may do as you requested. I would be happy to carry any message that might help your son and us in the future. I am ready when you are.”
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

“I’ve heard some stories from my father about that worthy adventuring band. I didn’t place your name at first, but now that you mention it, pappy did travel with another Validar for a time. That was before I was even born and my pappy has been known to stretch the truth when it comes to his past exploits”

“No need to apologize”, Aria shrugs. “I’d rather be known for my deeds than the past glories of my father and family. Actually, I’m one of my Arak’s daughters. I have a sister named Gilana. She’s a mean one and something of a black sheep in our clan. The less spoken of her the better.”

Laucian & Grondar wrote:“Aren’t kobolds miners of a certain degree?” he will ask Grondar and Aria. “Perhaps there are concealed entryways and exits.”

"While their skill is certainly limited, they do have the knowledge to build crude tunnels and such. I doubt they could conceal an entry with any skill, though."
“Kobold miners?”, Aria snorts indignantly. “Here’s what I think of kobold miners!”

With that, she gathers a mouthful of spit and launches it towards the ground!
Argent wrote:To the dwarves Argent will say, “If you two do get your dragon ribs and steaks, I’ll be happy to cook them up in this kitchen. It’s got about everything you need in it!”
“It’s a deal, human!”, Aria answers excitedly.
Grondar wrote:"I have heard much of the qualities of dragonscale armor. A suit of it would be fitting for even the greatest heroes of legend. Fortunately, I happen to know of a smith back in Rockhome who is reputed to have great skill in fashioning dragonscale suits for dwarves."
“I’ve heard tales that those who wear armor crafted from the skins of dragons gain a resistance to what that dragon breathes. So plate mail from a red would protect against fire.”

Aria quickly grows bored with all the searching and the humans “oohing” and ‘aahhing” over this and that. The bed of diamonds does demand her immediate attention though!

“Aye, this is a major find! With some crafting, these little darlings could be worth a fortune to be the envy of anyone!”

But even the appeal of a fine treasure from beneath the earth can't hold back Aria’s impatience.

“Alright, lets get moving here! Me blade is getting dull with all this talk and no action! If this dragon is beyond the Demon’s Mouth, then lets go get’m!”

such finery.. and a not-so-fine death..

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:
When Sherra steps through the portal, Grondar looks over at her. "<How are you holding up, my friend,>" he asks in dwarven.
"<Quite well now that I can breathe,>" Sherra replies in dwarvish with a smile on her soot and sweat-covered face.

The room is quickly explored and no traps are detected, and the group branches out further to explore the other rooms. Sherra is not the only one impressed with the finery.

Sherra smiles at Argent, relaying to her in that smile that she was thinking the same thing. However, the dead body does put a damper on the regalness of it all. Still Argent appears undaunted by the whole thing and continues on with wanting to claim this as her new home.

Eager herself to explore whatever treasures may lie hidden in what is obviously the dragon's sleeping chamber, Sherra hopes the final confrontation with Ember is swift and decisive. May Tymora bless us today and we will surely be rich in countless ways because of it she thinks to herself.

Acerion:

"I don't really know about that, but it is certianly unpleasant to look upon."

Acerion agrees with Grondar on that point, but sees no need to comment further on it.

The groups move out to explore the area and Sharadin looks for magick. There seems to be a significant spell collection and the demon mouth is some form of portal as well, according to Sharadin. Validar looks at the 'portal' with a furrowed brow. "Let's keep an eye on that thing then."

"Agreed," Acerion replies simply. As the others explore, Acerion stays nearby, axe in hand. He doesn't leave sight of the demonic-shaped crystal, regardless of whether it is a portal or not.

Hearing Grondar’s words Laucian rethinks his actions. Rather then look for a door that may not be there Laucian stand in the corner of the study near the mirror(lower right hand corner.) and draws an arrow to his bow and readies his bow to be fired at the Demon’s mouth or what may come out of it, or the mirror which ever happens first.

Looking over and noting Laucian has the same idea, he nods in the elf's direction. Neither of them will allow the group to be ambushed by means of using either device. Too much has been lost on this day for all that we have won, Acerion thinks grimly.

Awaiting a dragon...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

"I thought your name sounded familiar, Aria. Arak was a member of the Swords of Cynalon. Two of my ancestors were members of that illustrious band, as well as the mysterious Nightmist that our friends Lord Sherwood and Kylie are currently searching for."

“I’ve heard some stories from my father about that worthy adventuring band. I didn’t place your name at first, but now that you mention it, pappy did travel with another Validar for a time. That was before I was even born and my pappy has been known to stretch the truth when it comes to his past exploits”

"He was obviously one of the group that did not disappear on their legendary final battle. I obviously have no idea what stories your father may have told, but the group completed some truly glorious accomplishments. They are all heroes in the truest sense of the word."

Chareos agrees. “Perhaps we should move them so if Ember does try to escape he cannot get his hands on them in flight. It would limit his magic abilities if he were to flee again.”

"I agree that we should remove these from this area right away. If they are Ember's then we are denying him a substantial wealth of power and information. Even if he does not return to this location, we will have some extra knowledge of his abilities and possible ways to counter our foe. Also it ensures that we have some significant reward from this endeavor."

"Chareos and Argent, remove those books to the cavern so that we can transport them out of here." Suddenly a dark thought captures Validar's attention. Without another word, he will step back through the portal to the cavern.

On the other side, the noble warrior will make certain that this side of the portal is still secure and he will tell the three remaining here to stay near to the portal. "If Ember returns here again and not at the Crystal Tower or if any of the humanoids find some bravery, I do not want you to be caught in a desperate situation. Come to get the rest of us immediately."

(If something is different than when we left, he will adjust as needed.)

“If this thing is some sort of portal, then it tells volumes about the real Opikus. He was pretty demented to even consider using such a thing as a portal. Perhaps it was a good thing that Ember ate him!”

"There are two possibilities to consider: the 'portal' is decorated in an evil manner and simply a decoration for a sick, evil man or the portal has some actual evil qualities. Do any of you clerics have the ability to Detect Evil remaining?"

"While the place is interesting and the Mirror gives a suitable transportation capability, we are still likely in the Broken Lands, based on what the ranger Rathlar said. The place seems well secured, but I am not sure it is my idea of a base of operations. Of course, I am not a mage as well."

"I have heard much of the qualities of dragonscale armor. A suit of it would be fitting for even the greatest heroes of legend. Fortunately, I happen to know of a smith back in Rockhome who is reputed to have great skill in fashioning dragonscale suits for dwarves."

"That would be quite the glorious momento from this battle to have. Surely everyone would be impressed by such an obvious display of dragon hunting." Still, Validar is somewhat disgusted by the talk that is bantering back and forth of eating an intelligent foe. It seems so base and uncivilized.

Continuing on, Lord Sharadin finishes his inspection of the study. “The only other magic in this room apart from the mirror is this demon head. I believe that your guess is correct, Grondar. That blackness in the demon’s mouth is magical and most likely a way in and out of this chamber.”

Grondar replies, "I guess then that the real question is where it leads, and whether Ember may use it to return here. It appears to be the only other entrance or exit from this place.

"There must be some way in, besides the obvious teleportation spell. Although, we have to consider that Ember has another of these Mirror portals at whatever location he was teleported away from the cavern battle. Keep your eyes out for any other entrances which may appear at any time. Discounting that and assuming that Ember IS on the other side of this 'demon portal', is there some way that we can examine the other side of this portal first or some way to learn where it goes short of the obvious, simply crossing over? Is there some way that one can go through to see what is there and then return on their own power or somehow communicate to us, in the case this is a one way portal only?"

Aria adds, “Alright, lets get moving here! Me blade is getting dull with all this talk and no action! If this dragon is beyond the Demon’s Mouth, then lets go get’m!”

"I would not prefer to simply charge head-long into the unknown when faced with a dragon, potentially on death's door. Certainly, it is the most dangerous foe any of us have ever encountered and I for one would prefer to be as prepared as possible, in order to not lose any more comrades this day."

"What is your suggestion, Lord Sharadin?"

“ If Sherri and Terri have returned from the surface then We should give the tomes to them as they can get them to the fortress quicker then anyone.“
Chareos will then take a handful of books (say 4) and walk to the mirror and the cavern beyond, If Terri and Sherri are there with their flying carpet he will give them to them.
