New Frontiers #57
While the Guardians await the arrival of the red dragon, the great wyrm blows on the Wall of Fire, causing it to eerily bow out. Lord Validar barks out orders and then unexpectedly charges into the Wall of Fire and towards the waiting dragon beyond! A few moments later, Lord Corley also braves the fire.
Those closely watching the two men will see what appears to be a silvery-blue shimmer around the two lords just as they disappear into the fire. It is as if some invisible force is protecting them from the flames.
While the rest of the Guardians ponder what they've just witnessed, Laucian completes casting Dispel Magic. In response to his prayers, the Wall of Fire simply and suddenly vanishes!
The fire surrounding Lord Corley and Validar disappears and both are out in the open once more. The heat took a small toll on both, but neither man is seriously injured.
With the Wall of Fire gone, all the Guardians and their allies cannot help but notice just what they are facing! A gigantic red dragon stands before them, its head just on the other side of the wall of fire. The beast is easily over 100' long! Its head is the size of a small room and its neck alone is easily twenty feet long!
Dragon fear washes over all who see the monster. Argent, Lord Acerion, Grondar, Aria, Rathlar, and Lord Corley shake off the effects while Chareos, Laucian, Sherra, Arocken, Valena and Lord Validar cannot. The Guardians attack in rapid succession.
Argent casts Magic Missile at the Red Dragon, but the Missiles simply fizzle out upon striking the beast. Lord Validar reaches his target, but the dragon's scales turn aside his blade.
Chareos hovers and casts his own Magic Missile. A trio of missiles slams into the dragon and this time they draw blood! The dragon roars its displeasure.
Sherra fires a pair of magical arrows to no avail. The dragon fear causes her aim to go wide and the shaft that does hit simply bounces off the iron-hard scales.
Aria rushes forward on the left flank and slams her battleaxe down into the right front leg of the Red Dragon. Again blood is drawn and the dragon roars in pain.
Arocken fires a pair of arrows at the dragon with no effect. They simply bounce off the beast's scaly hide.
Lord Corley reaches the dragon and hacks at it with his great sword. The blade is swung in a wide arc that slashes the monster's neck. A vital area is hit and a stream of blood flows from the wound. The immediate area is showered in blood! The dragon's scream is nearly deafening!
The dragon turns and faces Lord Corley. It gathers its breath and spews fire out! A cone-shaped blast of fire completely envelops Lord Corley. Those who see this will again note the silvery-blue shimmer around him as he disappears in the fire.
The dragon's breath continues on past Lord Corley. Lord Acerion is far enough to the dragon's left to safely avoid the blast, while further back, Sherra and Arocken move to their left for protection. The far end of the dragon's breath terminates in the cave opening where the trolls were webbed up. The blast incinerates those trolls near the front. The webbing instantly goes up in flames and the fire spreads along the entire length of the cavern. None of the trolls survive this attack.
The fire finally fades as the dragon has emptied its lungs of air. Lord Corley comes back into view once more. He does appear a bit singed, but is otherwise no worse for wear! Even the dragon is astonished by this!
Valena fires a trio of shafts at the dragon but once more the arrows fails to hit anything.
Realizing that this is indeed a real dragon, Grondar discards trying to Dispel the illusion and simply rushes forward to smash it with TruthGiver. Joining Aria, Grondar slams his mace hard in the dragon's leg!
Rathlar is also there and his longsword bites deep into the beast's flank. Over on the other side, Lord Acerion buries his axe deep into the other flank. More cries of pain come from the bloodied monster!
And then the dragon simply vanishes! Even the monster seems a bit surprised by this. One moment it was there, the next it was gone. The effect looks much like a Teleportation spell much like most of you have seen Sherwood and Jallarzi cast in the past. One moment it was there, the next it's gone. Even the effect of the Dragon Fear has vanished.
The Guardian's suddenly find them in a vast, mostly empty cavern. There are still fires burning here and there, but no more foes rush to face you.

The Other Side:
In the City of the Dead, Lyonessa and Ivy have met a familiar looking stranger.
"Now, when you are restored to life, your experiences here in the City of the Dead will be forgotten. Your mortal mind will only remember those things you experienced in life, so all this will seem like an elusive dream. I will be required to directly implant that which the gods wish you to remember. When the time comes, the message will be clear in your mind. To do this, I must make direct contact with your minds. Do I have your permission to do so?"
In the City of the Dead, Lyonessa and Ivy have met a familiar looking stranger.
"Forgive me for not making proper introductions," the man says with a polite bow. "I am Hasverion, and yes Lord Acerion is my son. No, I have not 'passed on' as you put it, for I am a native of the Outer Planes. Mercuria in the Seven Heavens is my home to be specific. I am in the service of Heironeous and that is why I have ventured here this day. I have been instructed to pass a message on to each of you to take back to Arret with you."Lyonessa & Ivy wrote:"Your son? Return to the Prime?" Lyonessa is a bit overwhelmed, not just at the fact that the resemblance to Lord Acerion is so strong, but that he says we'll be going back. "Of course we would do such a task for you, but how would you know we would be returning?" she asked, clearly confused, "Are you... do you.. have some sort of sway or power here?"
"Yes, Lyonessa is correct. We'd be happy to carry out this task for you. I am thankful that our visit to the afterlife is to be a short one. I can't help but wonder if you are Lord Acerion's father? Does that mean you've passed on as well?"

GM Notes:
GM Notes:
Lord Corley managed to do a Critical Hit to the dragon that ended up doing a whooping 42 points of damage!
For those unfamiliar with this, the Critical Hit system from Player's Options: Combat and Tactics. Here's the gist of how it works:
To do a Critical Hit, you need to roll a natural 18, 19, or 20 AND your roll has to be 5 better than what you need to hit. For example, if a character needs to roll a 14 or better to hit a target, then if he rolls a natural 19 or 20, then a Critical Hit has been made. An 18 wouldn't work in this case, as it was not 5 better than what was needed.
When a Critical Hit has been scored, the target automatically takes double the damage rolled on the dice, but not including any strength or skill bonuses. From there, the target needs to make a Save vs. Death. If they succeed, then nothing else happens.
If the save fails, then there is a possibility of a greater wound. There are a series of tables that are used in this step. The first step is to compare the size of the weapon (Small, Man-sized, Large) vs. the size of the target (Small, Man-sized, Large, etc).
This tells the GM what dice to roll on Critical Hit tables. A small weapon against a large target will probably not be that bloody, but a large weapon vs. a small target probably will be.
These dice are rolled and the result is given on the appropriate table considering weapon and target type. The more bloody results you've seen in the game are the results of Critical Hits. Ivy's demise was a Critical Hit.
Hit Points:
Chareos - 45 of 57
Corley - 29 of 52
Laucian - 43 of 64
Rathlar - 50 of 68
Sherra - 32 of 38
Valena - 44 of 50
Validar - 70 of 76

Fortune favors the bold...
Lord Validar -
Lord Validar decides the best course of action is to take the attack to the dragon. He leads his comrades at arms into the fire, quite literally, and rushes through the Wall of Fire. He barely notices that the fire doesn't seem to harm him much, concentrating on the dragon.
Rushing through the flames, Validar is immediately confronted by the immensity of their foe. The sheer size of the beast and its obvious power gives the noble warrior pause and a terrible sense of foreboding grips his heart and his mind. He pauses as he watches the light reflecting off the polished scales of the great wyrm and sees it moves with both fluid grace and uncomparable power.
Fighting back the awe and fear gripping him, Validar strikes the giant lizard, but the beast's scales turn aside his enchanted blade. Lord Validar lets out an audible grunt from the force of the ineffective attack.
The heat from the fire behind him is gone and more attacks are made on the dragon. Validar does not have to look to know that Laucian was successful in removing the interposing Wall of Fire. As the Guardians attack, they start to draw some blood. Then in a terrific exchange, Lord Corley slashes deeply into the dragon's neck, showering many in blood. The beast then retaliates!
Somehow, Corley survives the blast of flame and Validar notices the silvery-blue light that seems to shroud his good friend from the fire. More attacks hit and surprisingly, the dragin suddenly vanishes in what appears to be a Teleport spell.
Suddenly, there is a reprieve again. Lord Validar looks around and sees that none have fallen to the dragon. "Spread out and check the area. Someone keep an eye on the fallen orc priests. One of them seemed to fall in battle to my blade earlier."
"Arocken, Valena, Laucian, Rathlar! Check the caverns near the far wall. The portal that Opikus may have come through may still be functioning. If so, I want to locate it. It should not be obvious if it is what I expect."
"We also need to gather the bodies of our fallen comrades once we secure this cavern. Argent! What do you suppose happened to the dragon? To me, it seemed like a teleport spell took effect. Could someone or something have activated a teleport from afar?"
"Everyone be ready if we are attacked again. I am not certain that any of these humanoids want to do battle with dragon slayers, but I do not want to be taken unaware at this point. I also do not want to let any of the humanoids get away if we can stop them."
Validar notes that the cavern with the trolls is empty and they seem to have been incinerated by the dragon breath that hit Corley. "Lord Acerion, can you make certain that the trolls have all been destroyed?"
Lord Validar approaches Lord Corley. He slaps the blood-soaked warrior on the back. "We all did well in attacking the dragon, but yours was the telling blow, my friend. Well done!" Validar moves on to see about the rest of the arrangements needed here.
"We have dealt a serious blow to the enemy, but we cannot rest here. If the adjacent caverns are all empty of enemies, then we do not have the wherewithall to track them all down, so we will gather our fallen and the fallen leaders of the enemy and return to the surface. Hopefully the fighting there will have ended by now. In any case, well done all of you. I am proud to be called a member of the Guardians of Light." With that, Validar will raise his sword over his head in respect to all of his comrades.

Conquer or Die!
Chareos
As Chareos' comrades rush the dragon’s side and strike blow after blow the dragon soon merely disappears causing Chareos to fly in confusion as to where it had gone, trying to consider what spell was used. (Any chance Chareos could use his Spellcraft ability to recognize the spell that was used?)
“I will see to the dead,” he says with a sadness in his face. He will then lift Lyonessa’s lifeless frame and lay it upon the munitions cart in a respectful manner and do the same with Ivy’s remains covering both in the cloaks that they wore.
If no counterattack is seen Chareos will then gather the priest they fought in the park as well as Dek’s body and place them on the cart.
Of those who notice, the mage will say very little lost in thought.
Chareos doubts how effective his spells will be after seeing Argent’s spell merely sparkle out of existence though he tries anyway. Raising up he casts his Magic Missile spell and three energy beams soon find the dragon. Much to its dismay the Dragon rears in pain as they slam home causing blood to spill.Argent casts Magic Missile at the Red Dragon, but the Missiles simply fizzle out upon striking the beast. Lord Validar reaches his target, but the dragon's scales turn aside his blade.

“Well done, all of you!” he says in elation as they have survived a dragon battle. Though Validar’s words soon strike home as two of their comrades have fallen, of which Chareos took little notice during the battle."We have dealt a serious blow to the enemy, but we cannot rest here. Laucian
Lord Validar and Lord Corley valiantly rush towards the flame of the fire wall. An odd occurance catches Laucian’s eye as a shimmering blue light, aura if you will, forms about them as they begin to enter the flames. It is hard for the elf to finish his prayer though he doubles his efforts in doing so. Upon completing his spell he lets out a sigh of relief as he sees the Wall before him disappear into nothingness.
Standing where the Wall once stood, a very large Red Dragon looks at us menacingly. A fear that Laucian has known very few times grips his very soul as he stands stock still for a few moments. He is soon awakened by the deafening scream of the dragon, shaking his head as he sees Lord Corley being stared down by the dragon.
“Not another comrade… Not this day!” he says as he readies his bow with a shaft. Though it is too late for the ranger to do anything as Corley is engulfed in the fiery embrace of the dragon's breath.
Before he can take aim at the monstrosity it simply disappears before him, for a moment he can't help but notice the shock on the dragon's face as well as his comrades. With it gone he looks around to see if the dragon is merely in hiding or under some sort of stealth spell waiting for it to appear at any moment.
Lord Validar’s voice breaks the confused silence:
Laucian will make his way down through the cavern, his bow nocked and ready for trouble, if it is to rear its ugly head once more. He will begin looking for anything that might surmise as a door or portal.
He will then say in return to Lord Validar as well as his fellow comrades, ”We have accomplished much this fine day. I am honored to stand among you, but do not forget those whom have fallen for they have given the ultimate sacrifice."
If they are able to leave unhindered Laucian will see that Dusk makes his way back out to the sky above, "It is what Lyonessa would want."

Lord Validar's henchmen...
Arocken -
Arocken is not successful in his attacks against the dragon, although some of his comrades are. Frustrated though he may be in his own right, Arocken is excited when the dragon is repeatedly wounded and Lord Corley, especially, strikes a telling blow.
A loud whoop escapes the elf's lips as the dragon disappears, surprise and confusion etched on the great lizard's face.

Arocken stows his bow and changes to his two blades to scout the area. Others have better bow skill and who knows what they may find. Arocken begins looking for any kind of hidden or unusual thing he may find, as well as checking out nearby tunnels as he passes them.
He will try to stay close to the others so that none of them can be ambushed alone.

Taking control of the cavern...
Lord Validar -
Lord Validar stands guard and vigilant as many of the Guardians go about their tasks. Soon everything is moving smoothly and the noble warrior is hopeful that their fighting has ended for the moment. While they are in good condition physically in general, this has been a day of severe tests. A brief respite would be good for all involved.
Laucian - He will then say in return to Lord Validar as well as his fellow comrades, ”We have accomplished much this fine day. I am honored to stand among you, but do not forget those whom have fallen for they have given the ultimate sacrifice."
Lord Validar looks ove to their fallen comrades and sees Chareos carefully placing their bodies on the wagon. The fighter-mage seems extremely sullen.
"If all goes well, we have not seen the last of our friends. Prepare their bodies as best as you can. If it is possible, then we will do what we must to bring them back to us."

Battle Under Corunglain
Grondar:
Grondar winces instinctively as Lords Validar and Corley charge through the Wall of Fire. Strangely, a silvery-blue glow surrounds each of them as they pass the flames, which seem not to touch them at all. From the color, could this be some blessing of the Revered Mother?
Moments later, Laucian dispels the wall, and the rest get their first good look at the dragon. Fear, like a palpable force, washes over them, causing some to quail or shrink away. Marshalling his own prodigious willpower, Grondar fights through the effect, but finds that the words of his supplication have fled his mind. With no other good option, he races forward and strikes the dragon.
Several others strike telling blows as well, particularly Lord Corley and the lovely Aria. The dragon's response is to bathe Lord Corley in its fiery breath. Once again, the aura appears and protects him from the worst of the inferno. Helpfully, the blast also incinerates what's left of the trolls.
Rathlar and Lord Acerion also draw blood from the beast. Wounded sorely, the dragon suddenly vanishes! From what he has seen of Sherwood's magic, it looks like a Teleport spell, but Grondar is no mage.
Looking about, it seems there are no more opponents to fight. Apparently, the goblinoids fled at the sight of the dragon. Not surprising, really.
Validar begins issuing orders once again, but none are specifically addressed to Grondar. As none of the Guardians appear critically hurt at this point, the dwarven priest joins Chareos in gathering up the bodies of their companions and the enemy leaders. Once that is done, he uses his expertise to prepare Ivy and Lyonessa as best he can for possible future resurrection.

Ivy
Ivy:
“Well met, Hasverion”, Ivy says in greeting. The man’s words do click in Ivy’s head. If he’s not truly mortal, than Lord Acerion is not completely mortal either. Perhaps that is the source of the innate powers he has displayed upon occasion. Unfortunately, it appears that this will be forgotten once we’re returned to life.
“My apologies for even suggesting this, Hasverion, but how can we know that you are really what you claim to be? I mean, you are also far afield from your home plane and could be trying to deceive us for some unknown reason. If you were genuine, then I would willingly agree to what you propose. How can we really know for sure?”

Argent
Argent:
The Invoker gasps in a combination of horror and surprise when Lords Corley and Validar rush into her Wall of Fire. Didn’t they understand just how deadly it was?
A moment later the lords come back into view as the Wall is brought down by Laucian’s magic and a humongous Red Dragon comes into view! Fear rises up inside Argent, but she manages to keep it in check. Perhaps her earlier battle against the much smaller white dragon helped her deal with this behemoth?
Keeping her wits about her, Argent launches a barrage of Magic Missiles that have no affect whatsoever.
“Magic resistance,” the Invoker mutters to herself.
Fortunately, Chareos’ Missile is effective and numerous weapons cause further injury until the dragon just disappears!
“I agree that it appears to have been a Teleportation spell, but the dragon did not cast it. Jallarzi did speak of such an affect. While I cannot be certain, it does seem to fit the facts. Jallarzi herself has knowledge of a spell that will hold the effects of a second spell until a specific condition has been met. She uses one so that should she be incapacitated or near death, she is teleported to the Temple of Mystra in Elcadan. I believe it is called a Contingency spell. Perhaps that is what we witnessed here this day.”
Having nothing else to add, Argent returns back to the terraces where the bodies of the fallen are being placed on the remaining wagon. To her astonishment, Chareos seems to want to put the body of the orcs on the same cart!
“Don’t put those scum with the bodies of our fallen! They deserve better respect than that! Strip them of their magic items and put them on the cart, but don’t even think about mixing their bodies with ours! Toss the orcs into one of the fires. They deserve nothing less.”
Argent will wait to see where she is needed next.

I am an Invoker of no small power.
Corley
Corley:
Lord Corley winces as he steps into the flaming wall and instinctively closes his eyes. To his immense surprise, he doesn’t feel any real pain. The heat of the fire is strong, but tolerable.
Suddenly the fire is gone and a great red dragon is before him! He spies Lord Validar attacking the legendary monster, but with little effect. Rushing forward, Corley swings his own blade in a wide arc and creates a large gash in the beast's neck! What seems like gallons of the monster’s blood erupt outward!
That seems to have drawn the beast's fury as it opens its mouth and fire spews out! Once more Lord Corley is engulfed in fire and this one is even hotter than the first! It sears the young noble but he somehow survives and remains on his feet. Everyone, including Lord Corley, seems surprised by this.
Another surprise follows as the dragon vanishes!
Seeing the bowmen moving forward, Lord Corley will trail behind them just in case more foes show themselves on the far side of the cavern.

“That we did, my friend! Even better, we lived to tell the tale!”Lord Validar approaches Lord Corley. He slaps the blood-soaked warrior on the back. "We all did well in attacking the dragon, but yours was the telling blow, my friend. Well done!" Validar moves on to see about the rest of the arrangements needed here.

Aria:
The Wall of Fire vanishes and the giant dragon concealed behind it appears! Seeing that the dragon is close enough to reach and attack, Aria stashes her Throwing Axe and reclaims her trusty Battleaxe. Once she reaches the dragon's front leg, she hacks at it with her axe, drawing blood.
Grondar is quickly there, moving far faster than any dwarf aught to. His mace further wounds the dragon and then all of a sudden it is gone! Escaped like a cowardly beast!
“Come back here and fight, you overgrown snake!” Aria hisses, brandishing her battleaxe wildly. “Too bad. Pappy always said that dragon steaks were the best to be had! I could almost taste them now!”
Not having anything else to do, Aria will stand guard in case of attack.

Valena:
“Lady of the Forests, protect me!” Valena utters upon seeing the dragon. Fear unlike she’s ever felt before grips her and holds her tight. Even her shafts sail wide from the effects of the fear.
Just as sudden as the dragon was there, it's gone again taking the debilitating fear with it. Valena can think and react normally again.

Valena comes forth upon hearing her name. She’ll carefully make her way across the battlefield and visually inspect the openings on the far side of the cavern."Arocken, Valena, Laucian, Rathlar! Check the caverns near the far wall. The portal that Opikus may have come through may still be functioning. If so, I want to locate it. It should not be obvious if it is what I expect."

GM Notes
GM Notes:
The dragon cast no spell, so Spellcraft would not help in this instance.Any chance Chareos could use his Spellcraft ability to recognize the spell that was used?
Not necessary as Lyonessa left Dusk back at the Gatehouse. If they are able to leave unhindered Laucian will see that Dusk makes his way back out to the sky above, "It is what Lyonessa would want."
Try it and find out!
Chareos
He will begin stripping the dead orc leaders of anything that might be magical or valuable: weapons, wands, armor, jewelry (no holy symbols) and any pouches/bags that may be on them. After they are stripped of their armaments, Chareos will then dump their broken bodies into the fires to be consumed.
Looking a little taken back he will stammer out, “Yes, yes of course. I wasn’t thinking.” He says this as he looks into Argent’s eyes.Argent wrote:“Don’t put those scum with the bodies of our fallen! They deserve better respect than that! Strip them of their magic items and put them on the cart, but don’t even think about mixing their bodies with ours! Toss the orcs into one of the fires. Lord Validar -
Lord Validar approaches Lord Corley. He slaps the blood-soaked warrior on the back. "We all did well in attacking the dragon, but yours was the telling blow, my friend. Well done!" Validar moves on to see about the rest of the arrangements needed here.
“That we did, my friend! Even better, we lived to tell the tale!”
"That is the general idea, my friend," Validar says with a grin. "My hope is that it is a long time before we no longer tread this ground." Lord Corley soon moves off to cover the scouts.
Slowing picking her way across the battlefield, Argent walks up to the handsome and unfried warrior.

"I see," the warrior states. "If that is the case, we have little chance to find the creature, as it could literally be anywhere that it knows, likely someplace it considers to be extremely safe. However, this does give us an advantage if we find the portal that brought Opikus here, as he may not be back at his tower currently."
"Is it possible for you to scrye the beast, Argent?" Lord Validar asks.
Validar sees Grondar assist Chareos in preparing the bodies of their fallen and then Argent interrupts as Chareos attempts to place one of the orc leaders on the wagon as well. Validar does not interfere with the discussion and it seems that Argent gets her way. The noble warrior is more likely to side with Argent as well, as the orcs really do deserve nothing more than fire, if that.
Validar continues to monitor all the group's actions and stand guard as well, should anything unexpected happen.

Conquer or Die!
Lyonessa:
Lyonessa is quite shocked to learn that Lord Acerion is not entirely human. The paladin is rather striking, but didn't notice anything more than that in the short time she has known him. It soon seems that when they return, and it really does appear they will, all will be forgotten. Lyonessa is about to accept Hasverion's request when Ivy speaks up a concern.
“My apologies for even suggesting this, Hasverion, but how can we know that you are really what you claim to be? I mean, you are also far afield from your home plane and could be trying to deceive us for some unknown reason. If you were genuine, then I would willingly agree to what you propose. How can we really know for sure?”
That question is a good one, but Lyonessa ponders what would be satisfying as truth. Powerful entities from other planes could do just about anything, she figures. She will lean in to Ivy and say softly, "How will we know for sure, even if he does show us something? I don't wish us to be rude, but now you have built my paranoia with your question. Will we take anything as truth now, or as a well-crafted trick?"

My voice, my will, my magic - three blessings bestowed by Mystra that spell your doom
Acerion
Acerion:
Validar is already through the wall, as is Lord Corley. He thought he noticed a shimmering around them as they passed through. Was that supposed to happen? the paladin thinks to himself. Wondering if some other magic is in play, Acerion sets his feet for his own leap. The Wall of Fire is dispelled however, and so Acerion will never know what had transpired.
The dragon is beyond, larger than anything Acerion has seen. He feels the unnatural fear of it wash over him, such a monstrous creature, but he manages to shake off the dread. He pushes forward, manuevering around to one side of it as the rest of his companions press forward.
Several do manage to strike blows upon the dragon, including a massive blow dealt by Lord Corley. The dragon turns and unleashes its hellish breath weapon upon the young lord, completely engulfing him.
The dragon's breath continues on past Lord Corley. Lord Acerion is far enough to the dragon's left to safely avoid the blast, while further back, Sherra and Arocken move to their left for protection.
Over on the other side, Lord Acerion buries his axe deep into the other flank. More cries of pain come from the bloodied monster!
Thankfully Acerion is out of the way enough to miss being hit by the dragon's attack. He moves in closer and swings his axe in a mighty arc, burying it deep into the dragon's flank.
Soon after, the dragon merely winks out of existence. Acerion looks around, but the enemy is gone, and none of the humanoids remain. Things look calm again, for now. Argent provides some information to Validar's asked question about where the dragon may have gone, and if it truly is gone. Then Validar turns to Acerion.
Validar notes that the cavern with the trolls is empty and they seem to have been incinerated by the dragon breath that hit Corley. "Lord Acerion, can you make certain that the trolls have all been destroyed?"
"Of course," Acerion replies, then pauses, asking a question of his own, "Did you notice anything when you leapt through the Wall of Fire? It seems as though you and Lord Corley were wrapped in an aura of sorts. Plus Corley seems moderately unharmed by the dragon's firey breath. Were there other protection magics in place that I was unaware of?"
Regardless of the answer, Acerion will still move into the troll cavern, his axe at the ready, to make sure no trolls remain inside.

is it over?
Sherra:
Sherra watches the Wall of Fire fall and reveal the dragon behind it. She watches as her friends and companions rush forward to do battle. What she can not do is make her fingers work and pull back on her bow. How can anything I do actually harm that? she thinks, fear running through her like poisonous barbs.
She knows she can't just hover there forever, for eventually the dragon will be slain or slay all of her friends and come for her. Fighting against the fear, she pulls back on her bowstring, but with no results.
Validar gives out orders to some, but has nothing specific for her to do. She lowers herself to the ground and begins picking up the caches of arrows she had laid about the cavern. Once done, she will stand ready with her bow, covering everyone from the cavern mouth.

She watches the rest of the scene play out before her as she moves in seemingly painful slow motion, reaching for another worthless arrow. Then suddenly, the dragon is gone, and the fear vanishes with it. Sherra almost doesn't know where she is, the clarity is so overwhelming.Sherra fires a pair of magical arrows to no avail. The dragon fear causes her aim to go wide and the shaft that does hit simply bounces off the iron-hard scales.

Lord Validar - questions...
Lord Validar -
Validar notes that the cavern with the trolls is empty and they seem to have been incinerated by the dragon breath that hit Corley.
Lord Validar considers what was asked by the paladin for a moment before answering. "I saw what you mentioned shroud Lord Corley, but did not take notice of the same in regards to the Wall of Fire. To be honest I never considered the Wall's flames to be much a a threat, at least in comparison to the dragon's breath. So combined with the adrenline of the attack, I cannot confirm or deny that such a protection covered me as well."
"I could say that I expected that to happen and that it was part of my plan to attack," the noble warrior says with a mock smile. "But in truth, it was simply the thought that we could turn the battle against the dragon through elan. As for its source, I am not certain either. There were no obvious or known magicks in play, either from enchanted items or from spells." Validar casts a long look at Grondar and the mace that Ivy held. The glow around Corley was a silvery blue, which is the signature color of Azrella. "We have received aid from various gods before on this mission. Perhaps it was a boon from one of them, yet again. Or perhaps your dear Ivy managed to send us a gift from beyond the veil of death. At the moment, we can only speculate. In any case, it seems we defeated the monster, perhaps with some 'outside' help."
"Now I hope to put an end to this battle and return to the surface. If all has gone as expected, the battle above ground should be grinding to a halt as well and with the hordes driven back, we have managed to buy Corunglain a bit of a reprieve."

Battle Under Corunglain
Grondar:
Argent seems to confirm his own speculation regarding the dragon's disappearance. While he has never heard of a Contingency spell, it would seem to explain the dragon's seeming surprise at the event.Argent wrote:“I agree that it appears to have been a Teleportation spell, but the dragon did not cast it.
"And that is the greatest blessing of all," Grondar says. "Would that we all might have survived," he says, glancing toward the bodies of Ivy and Lyonessa, "then we would truly have something to celebrate."Corley wrote:“That we did, my friend! Even better, we lived to tell the tale!”
Grondar chuckles in appreciation at the axe-mistress' enthusiasm, courage and ferocity. "Admittedly, I've never had the opportunity to try dragon steaks, Lady Aria, but perhaps that oversight will be corrected someday."Aria wrote:“Come back here and fight, you overgrown snake!” Aria hisses, brandishing her battleaxe wildly. “Too bad. Pappy always said that dragon steaks were the best to be had! I could almost taste them now!”
Argent wrote:“Don’t put those scum with the bodies of our fallen! They deserve better respect than that! Strip them of their magic items and put them on the cart, but don’t even think about mixing their bodies with ours! Toss the orcs into one of the fires. They deserve nothing less.”
Grondar shakes his head at the continuing mindless prejudice within his companions, but chooses not to launch into another lecture that will inevitably lead to another argument. Instead, the dwarf focusses on caring for the bodies of Ivy and Lyonessa.Chareos wrote:Looking a little taken back he will stammer out, “Yes, yes of course. I wasn’t thinking.” He says this as he looks into Argent’s eyes.
Acerion wrote:"Of course," Acerion replies, then pauses, asking a question of his own, "Did you notice anything when you leapt through the Wall of Fire? It seems as though you and Lord Corley were wrapped in an aura of sorts. Plus Corley seems moderately unharmed by the dragon's firey breath. Were there other protection magics in place that I was unaware of?"
Noting the look in his direction from Validar, Grondar enters the conversation. "Silver is a color associated with the Revered Mother, so it is possible that the effect you and Corley experienced was due to more cooperation between her and Azrella. It may also have been related in some manner to the Recitation blessing that I requested from the Revered Mother at the beginning of the battle."Validar wrote:"I could say that I expected that to happen and that it was part of my plan to attack," the noble warrior says with a mock smile.

Lord Validar -
Corley wrote: “That we did, my friend! Even better, we lived to tell the tale!”
"And that is the greatest blessing of all," Grondar says. "Would that we all might have survived," he says, glancing toward the bodies of Ivy and Lyonessa, "then we would truly have something to celebrate."
"I would not consider our two fallen companions as lost to us. As you know, we have some powerful friends, including Elspeth of Azrella. I am certain that our fallen comrades will be able to join us once again as the heroes that they are."

"You may certainly be correct. Unless someone takes credit for it, we may not ever know for certain. And it has been said that there exists a close connection between various human and humanoid gods. Your patron and that of Ivy may have been responsible. Corley is now alive, that much is certain and likely he shouldn't have been facing a dragon of that size. For that at least I am pleased."

Post Continued:
The battle underneath the Earth has seemingly come to an end. The wounded dragon unexpectedly vanished and any goblinoids in the area seem to have retreated. The Guardians spread out to secure the immediate area.
Some stand guard near the entryway while Chareos and Grondar retrieve the bodies of Ivy and Lyonessa. The orc leaders’ bodies are searched for items and then tossed into the nearest fires.
Arocken, Laucian, Rathlar, and Valena are sent across the cavern to search for the suspected portal Opikus used to reach these caverns. Everywhere the explorers look, there are signs of habitation. Crude bedrolls lie here and there along with campfires.
The air is most unpleasant to breath between the smoke of numerous fires and the stench of burnt flesh. A haze hangs over the cavern as fresh air is being depleted faster than it can be replaced. Those sensitive to such things will find breathing difficult without choking.
Some things of interest are found during the search. Arocken and Rathlar come across passages leading away from this cavern system and deeper into the earth. One is in the far left corner, based on how you entered these caves, the other on the far right. Both passages show signs of heavy usage. The most recent prints lead into these passages. The one on the left also has the footprints of numerous reptilian beasts of burden.
While Laucian searches, a soft pitiful mewing sound reaches his ears. In an out of the way campsite, the elfin follower of Ehlonna finds a small cage holding what appears to be a black housecat. The poor creature has been wounded and blood is noticeable on its dark fur. Several sharp weapons lay near the cage with blood on them, suggesting that the orcs were prodding the trapped animal in its cage. The cat eyes Laucian as he approaches and mews once more.
Valena discovers something unusual in the back wall of one of the side chambers. There is a spot where the omni-present haze does not exist. Reaching out, her hand passes through this area and vanishes! (This is the location of the invisible portal. The haze made it stand out even thought it was not visible to the naked eye.) Valena calls out her discovery.
Elsewhere, Lord Acerion searches the caves the trolls emerged from. He finds nothing but ash in the entry cave, but the adjacent caves are not as damaged. He comes across more troll bodies that were seared by the fires, but not reduced to ash. Tunnels lead away deeper into this cave. Noises can be heard off in those caves, but none appear to be getting closer. Most just fade away into silence.
Back near the entrance to these caverns, a flying carpet unexpectedly flies in! It carries four individuals and three of them are known to some of the Guardians. (Specifically Argent, Chareos, and Validar.) These three are Lord Sharadin and his daughters Sherry and Terry! Sharadin is a tall man with short blonde hair and is clean-shaven. His daughters are both in their late teens, are attractive with long blonde hair and bright blue eyes.
The identity of the fourth passenger is unknown to all. She is an exquisitely beautiful elf with flowing silver hair and bright blue eyes. The woman appears unarmed and her dress is rather plain. The elf maiden leaps off the flying carpet right before it sets down on the terraces.
“He was here”, the elf says as she looks about. “But no longer. Ember has fled this cavern. We were so close!”
Spotting familiar faces among the group, Lord Sharadin comes forth to greet them.
“Lord Validar! You turn up in the most unusual places. What has transpired here?”
Sharadin will also take the time to say hello to his former apprentice, Chareos, as will his daughters. He’ll ask Argent how she is doing.
In reference to the elf woman, Sharadin will say, “This is Silvarn. You would all do well to treat her with the utmost respect.”

The Other Side:
“It is a fair point,” Hasverion will concede. “And a sensible precaution. As you suggest, revealing my true form might only be construed as another trick. Very well, let us seek out independent council. If you ladies would do me the honor of accompanying me, then perhaps I can put your fears to rest.”
Hasverion will gallantly offer his arms to Ivy and Lyonessa so that they may travel deeper into the City of the Dead.
Ivy & Lyonessa wrote:“My apologies for even suggesting this, Hasverion, but how can we know that you are really what you claim to be? I mean, you are also far a field from your home plane and could be trying to deceive us for some unknown reason.

GM Notes:
Sharadin, Sherry, and Terry all appeared in the old Frontier and Sword of Doom games in the Q-link section of the site. Sharadin is also Sherwood’s uncle and probably the most powerful known mage in the kingdom.
Items taken from the Orc Leader include a battleaxe, a footman’s flail, 3 potions, a spear, a longspear, platemail armor, a girdle, boots, a phylactery, and 2 rings. Other miscellaneous items grabbed include a scroll, a footman’s mace, a shield, spiked leather armor, chain mail armor and a morningstar. Scattered about the vast cavern are numerous regular weapons and ranged weapon ammo. Some valuables can be found if you take the time to search for them. (Coins lying here and there and so on.)
The orc cave map has been updated. Actually I reverted it to an earlier pre-combat copy that shows everything in this particular area. Ignore the numbers and letters on the map, as they have no real meaning in this. (The map is from a published module. I just adapted it to use as the setting for this battle.)
The white areas that go off map continue on. This is a very big cavern! The two passages leading away from the cavern are both on the left side of the map at the top and the bottom. X marks the location of the portal.
Hit Points:
Chareos - 45 of 57
Corley - 29 of 52
Laucian - 43 of 64
Rathlar - 50 of 68
Sherra - 32 of 38
Valena - 44 of 50

Laucian
Moving deeper into the cavern the darkening haze of the fires grips Laucian by the throat. Barely able to breath the ranger takes his cloak and places it before his mouth in the hopes to filter the smoke. As he moves deeper within the cavern a weak sound rises from within.
Following the sound with his bow at the ready Laucian moves ever forward. As he grows closer he begins to hear the call steadier and more pitiful, almost like an animal crying for help or its mother.
As he rounds a stalagmite, with his bow drawn his eyes fall on a cage with weapons about it. Within the cage lies a little cat with blood about its dark fur, its sorrowful eyes burrowing into his.
Slacking his bow he returns his arrow to his quiver and squats down near the cage eyeing the cat. He will sit with it for a few moments speaking soothing words to the cat hoping to ease its tension that it may have towards him. After a time Laucian will convert his Command-surrender into a CLW and cast it on the cat. Afterward he will release the poor thing from its cage saying, “Looks like you have 8 lives left, my little furry friend.” Lifting it up into his arms, if it allows him, “Come you must be hungry.” Taking some jerky from his pack he will attempt to feed the cat.
If the cat does allow itself to be picked up Laucian will carry it back to their entranceway.

Chareos
While relieving the enemy of their useless burden of equipment Chareos looks at some of the equipment as he removes it from its former owner. He can’t help but wonder of their properties.
While Chareos removes a girdle that looks similar to his own, out of the corner of his eye he sees a flying carpet. Rising to his feet he looks in their direction where a elfin woman lands nearby followed closely by his mentor!
“Ember!? That was Ember?” Looking to his mentor as well as the elf maiden, in shock and excitement of meeting a foe of Sharadin’s past and surviving it. It is only then that he realizes just what they were dealing with.
As he sees the twins he recalls his time spent among them. Oh how they teased him in many ways for paying attention to his studies more than them. He will greet each in turn with a hug a brother may give, while saying, “It is good to see you again; may I say that you are as beautiful as ever.”

New arrivals...
Lord Validar -
The area slowly comes more under their control as the Guardians secure the caverns. Lyonessa and Ivy are recovered and the orc leaders are stripped of items and burned.
Clearly, they will not want to remain here long. The fires have managed to choke off much of the oxygen and the smoke is starting to hang in the air. A clear sign that it is not being replaced by fresh air. They will be moving out soon.
Other tunnels deeper into the earth are found and Lord Acerion finds that the trolls are no longer a threat. Valena soon calls out success in finding the portal that Opikus used to arrive here. Validar is about to head that way, when new arrivals appear. In an instant, he spins toward the intruders, his sword at the ready.
However, he sees that it is Sharadin and others on a flying carpet. Lord Validar keeps his sword at the ready, but lowers it as the group lands. The noble warrior moves a little closer to the terraces to greet the new arrivals, but still stands ready in the cavern.
Spotting familiar faces among the group, Lord Sharadin comes forth to greet them.
“Lord Validar! You turn up in the most unusual places. What has transpired here?”
"Lord Sharadin, it is most pleasant to see you again. The Guardians of Light have been involved in the liberation of Corunglain, since we found it under attack a few days ago. To that end, we recovered a few of the gatehouses over the last evenings. When the snowstorm hit, we found that the humanoid scum who had attacked the city fled underground to ride out the storm. We decided that the best way to help the people of this city to win the battle to carry the fight to the enemy."
"Encountering orcs, bugbears, trolls and goblins, we attacked their encampments. We have destroyed and routed a large number of their forces, as well as driving back the red dragon, calling himself Opikus the mage, who seemed to be behind this attack force. The wyrm seems to have been teleported away, perhaps against its will or as some contingency. We have just located the portal that this Opikus used to arrive here however. We have not had time to investigate as yet."
"What is the status of the battle on the surface? Our hope would be that we have blunted their attacks with our own and the siege has been ended. There is much more information to share about the source of this attack and the results, but I am not certain what you may already know and what brought you specifically here to us."
In reference to the elf woman, Sharadin will say, “This is Silvarn. You would all do well to treat her with the utmost respect.”
Lord Validar will nod respectfully in the elf's direction. "Most pleased to meet you, my good lady," he will say. "You know the enemy we fought here this day?"
Lord Validar will give directions to guard the areas that were found, as well as the portal of the mage Opikus. "Lord Corley, keep an eye on that portal with Valena and Arocken. From my understanding, it is an open two-way conduit, so anything could come through, but I am not sure if spells are possible to pass through. Keep away from the front of the opening in any case."
"Archers! Guard the tunnels coming into this cavern and cover them with your bows. I do not expect any attacks, but I do not want to be taken unawares."
"We must decide if we are going to proceed through the portal to Opikus tower or to return to the surface or perhaps even to split our forces and do both."

Argent:
A smoky haze hangs over the cavern making breathing difficult. Oddly enough, Argent doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of discomfort.
Argent is also about to move towards the location the elfin archer points out when the Flying Carpet comes into the cavern. It’s familiar to the Invoker, as she’s seen it before. Its passengers just confirm her original suspicions. It’s Sharadin and his daughters, along with an elfin woman she’s never seen before.
Argent will say hello to Sherry and Terry and try to keep one ear on the conversation between Lord Validar and Lord Sharadin.
“It’s okay,” Argent will respond as she looks back at Chareos. She’ll touch his arm for a moment, before moving off.Chareos wrote:Looking a little taken back he will stammer out, “Yes, yes of course. I wasn’t thinking.” He says this as he looks into Argent’s eyes.

“That seems to be the gist of the situation, milord.”Lord Validar wrote:"I see," the warrior states. "If that is the case, we have little chance to find the creature, as it could literally be anywhere that it knows, likely someplace it considers to be extremely safe. However, this does give us an advantage if we find the portal that brought Opikus here, as he may not be back at his tower currently."
“It is possible, but not very probable. Even if I did locate him we still do not have a method of going to his location assuming that he’s not on the other side of the portal.”"Is it possible for you to scry the beast, Argent?" Lord Validar asks.

“That’s an awfully nice thing to say,” one of them will comment. Chareos never could tell them apart.
“It looks like you’ve seen some real excitement," the other adds with a smile.
Sharadin:
“There is much to be discussed, Lord Validar. Lord Acerion and Lord Corley will wish to hear my words as well, as will all citizens of Cynalon.”
Once everyone who can be spared has gathered, Lord Sharadin will continue.
“My fellow lords, citizens of Cynalon; change is now upon us. Do not think of Corunglain as a complete tragedy. What has befallen here has finally given King Victor the 7th the nudge he needed to step down from the throne. As of late last night, Victor the 8th is the new King of Cynalon.”
“I should step back and explain how this all came about. During the opening moments of the siege, several river barges managed to escape downriver bearing word of what had transpired. Word soon reached the ears of the nearby towns and was quickly carried along to the Lady Salavarian. She in turn alerted me and I went to the see the King. Hearing of the fate of Corunglain was too much for the aged king. He could no longer bear the weight of the crown and at last turned the reigns over to his son.”
“Since that time, we’ve been preparing for a counter-strike against the forces attacking Corunglain. The legendary Stone House was liberated from the King’s vaults and used to transport troops and supplies to the Duke’s Fortress. We arrived just a little over an hour ago. The King awaits our report at the fortress and we shall go there as soon as we are able.”
“With the Fire Giants driven off, we scoured the city in search of more resistance and learned of the tunnels and came to investigate. That was when Silvarn picked up the scent of Ember and that is what led us down here. The fact that you forced him to withdraw speaks volumes of your and your companions’ skill in battle. You’ve driven off what is perhaps the greatest enemy of Cynalon since the days of Keln himself. You should all be proud of what you’ve done here this day.”
“The dragon that you battled is properly known as Ember. He’s been a major foe of mine for nearly twenty-five years now. During an early encounter in a system of caves to the north of here, we both were plunged into what we now believe to be a Pool of Power. The pool gave the skill and talent to wield magic to me, but it was also given to Ember as well. Since that time, the wyrm has grown as powerful in the art of magic as I have. It seems that when he was younger, Ember’s mother was slain by Victor the First in single combat and he swore revenge. Ember has no doubt been masquerading as this Opikus of which you spoke. This whole siege was created to draw me here so that Ember could finally defeat me. It appears that you’ve ruined his plans in your usual spectacular fashion, Lord Validar.”
“You’ve wounded Ember enough to force him to flee. We must go after him and finally slay the monster before he can recover. There will be no peace for Cynalon until this is accomplished. To that end, gather the strongest of your group to accompany Silvarn and myself through the portal. My daughters can use the flying carpet to transport the wounded to the surface. There are healers up there to tend to their wounds.”
“We must make haste. Every moment we waste just gives Ember the chance to recover and heal. On this day, Cynalon will no longer tolerate such attacks upon our people and our towns. Today we start to fight back!”
Lord Sharadin will draw his own blade and holding it forth dramatically.
“Who is with me?”
Silvarn:
GM Notes:
The Stone House is a magic item that was discovered by Victor the 2nd during his campaign against the Master of the Desert Nomads in the lands to the west. The item itself is a small 8” stone cube. Within in the cube is an extra-dimensional space that can be accessed via magical doors that can be called upon command. The Stone House functions like a cross between the Secure Shelter/Hidden Lodge spells that Sherwood uses and the Magnificent Mansion Jallarzi summoned. The exception is that it is permanent and the Stone House itself can be moved-- either carried physically or teleported—- to other locations. Everything inside the Stone House goes along with it.
Laucian & Friend:
The cat calms down quickly as Laucian works to soothe it. It noticeably perks up after being healed. The tabby will devour the jerky given to it and will take more if offered. The cat allows itself to be carried off.Slacking his bow he returns his arrow to his quiver and squats down near the cage eyeing the cat. He will sit with it for a few moments speaking soothing words to the cat hoping to ease its tension that it may have towards him. After a time Laucian will convert his Command-surrender into a CLW and cast it on the cat. Afterward he will release the poor thing from its cage saying, "Looks like you have 8 lives left, my little furry friend." Lifting it up into his arms, if it allows him, "Come you must be hungry." Taking some jerky from his pack he will attempt to feed the cat.
If the cat does allow itself to be picked up Laucian will carry it back to their entranceway.
Chareos:
"Yes, it was", Lord Sharadin will simply state as he scans the cavern."Ember!? That was Ember?" Looking to his mentor as well as the elf maiden, in shock and excitement of meeting a foe of Sharadin's past and surviving it. It is only then that he realizes just what they were dealing with.
“The Duke’s Star-shaped Fortress still stands, Chareos. Drakkimor and his companions were able to drive off the remaining Fire Giants. Corunglain will endure this terrible trial.”As Sharadin greets him Chareos will smile and give his Master a warrior's handshake, "It is good to see you well. I heard of your deeds at Karn's Keep. Congratulations." He can't help but wonder, "Was the fortress saved?"
Sherry and Terry will smile broadly as they greet Chareos. They’ll each give him a kiss on the cheek. As he sees the twins he recalls his time spent among them. Oh how they teased him in many ways for paying attention to his studies more than them. He will greet each in turn with a hug a brother may give, while saying, "It is good to see you again; may I say that you are as beautiful as ever."
“That’s an awfully nice thing to say,” one of them will comment. Chareos never could tell them apart.
“It looks like you’ve seen some real excitement," the other adds with a smile.
Sharadin:
Sharadin nods as he listens to Lord Validar’s tale. “That was pretty much what we were able to put together from those that we’ve spoken to. With the goblinoids being routed down here, the battle for Corunglain has pretty much ended. The Fire Giants have been driven off as well. The siege is over.”Lord Validar wrote:"Lord Sharadin, it is most pleasant to see you again.
“There is much to be discussed, Lord Validar. Lord Acerion and Lord Corley will wish to hear my words as well, as will all citizens of Cynalon.”

Silvarn:
“We’ve battled before,” Silvarn will admit with a slight smile. “But never to a satisfactory conclusion. He has Contingency magic on him that whisks him away before the fatal blow can be landed. Sharadin is correct. We must go through the portal and face Ember for the last time.”Lord Validar will nod respectfully in the elf's direction. "Most pleased to meet you, my good lady," he will say. "You know the enemy we fought here this day?"

Try it and find out!
Acerion
Acerion:
Elsewhere, Lord Acerion searches the caves the trolls emerged from. He finds nothing but ash in the entry cave, but the adjacent caves are not as damaged. He comes across more troll bodies that were seared by the fires, but not reduced to ash. Tunnels lead away deeper into this cave. Noises can be heard off in those caves, but none appear to be getting closer. Most just fade away into silence
Acerion makes sure that there is nothing left. Not only that all the sounds fade, but he lingers a little while longer to make sure he neither sees nor hears anything lingering in the shadows. Satisfied, he emerges from the caves and informs Lord Validar. During this time, unexpected allies arrive upon a wonderous flying carpet.
Covered in troll blood, his armor battered and his eyes swollen from the foul air and the recent loss of the lady Ivy, Acerion is not in the best of finery to meet such distinguished guests. Still, he removes his helm and bows his head respectfully before the ladies as well as a respectful nod to the Lord Sharadin. "An honor to meet all of you," he will say simply for now.
“There is much to be discussed, Lord Validar. Lord Acerion and Lord Corley will wish to hear my words as well, as will all citizens of Cynalon.”
Acerion listens to the news, wondering at the vast and sweeping changes that have occured so quickly. There is comfort in knowing Corunglain has been freed from the oppressive clutches of the invading horde. Talk quickly moves to going after Ember, and for that Acerion agrees wholeheartedly. If the dragon is injured enough for its defensive magics to wisk it away from the brink of death, then it needs to be dealt with before the dragon can heal and begin its terrors anew.

Momentous situations...
Lord Validar -
Lord Validar is pleased to hear that the Duke's Fortress has been spared and the seige is ended.
Sharadin nods as he listens to Lord Validar’s tale. “That was pretty much what we were able to put together from those that we’ve spoken to. With the goblinoids being routed down here, the battle for Corunglain has pretty much ended. The Fire Giants have been driven off as well. The siege is over.”
"That at least is good news. We have battled hard for several days in an attempt to assist the defenders of this city. Our sacrifices have not been in vain."
“There is much to be discussed, Lord Validar. Lord Acerion and Lord Corley will wish to hear my words as well, as will all citizens of Cynalon.”
Once everyone who can be spared has gathered, Lord Sharadin will continue.
"Indeed," is all that the noble warrior says. Lord Sharadin is certainly well-known for his integrity and Validar does not question his motives, although he is certainly curious based on the importance Sharadin is placing on his words.
Lord Validar will gather everyone available together for Lord Sharadin's announcement. Lord Validar removes his helmet out of respect and to better listen to the weighty words.
Not wanting to interrupt, Validar still fails to completely conceal his surprise at the announcement of the new King. Word has been mentioned more and more that this would soon happen, but perhaps very few foresaw this happening so quickly. When Sharadin pauses, Validar offers his respect to the new King.
Lord Validar will raise his sword at the news. "All hail, King Victor! Long live the King of Cynalon!"
Sharadin tells of the plans to counter-strike the invaders and that the King's troops arrived just recently to secure the city. Surely, coupled with the efforts of their group this day, there shall not be a similar attack for a long time.
The King's Mage Supreme then explains who the dragon is and what they were facing. It is both a sense of pride at the power the Guardians bring to battle and a sense of frustration that they were so close to defeating such a major foe on their own that Validar feels at Sharadin's words.
"It seems that when he was younger, Ember’s mother was slain by Victor the First in single combat and he swore revenge. Ember has no doubt been masquerading as this Opikus of which you spoke. This whole siege was created to draw me here so that Ember could finally defeat me. It appears that you’ve ruined his plans in your usual spectacular fashion, Lord Validar.”
The slightest grin graces Validar's face for the briefest of moments. Anyone not looking directly at him may not even see it. But the warrior is clearly proud both for himself and his comrades at arms. "The Guardians of Light have been encountering numerous instances of evil in this part of the Kingdom since we started out from Pyris together. It is our intention to continue to ruin the plans of our enemies, both internal and external."
Lord Sharadin then makes known his plans to follow after Ember and attempt to finish the job that the Guardians started.
“We must make haste. Every moment we waste just gives Ember the chance to recover and heal. On this day, Cynalon will no longer tolerate such attacks upon our people and our towns. Today we start to fight back!”
Lord Sharadin will draw his own blade and hold it forth dramatically.
“Who is with me?”
Acerion will raise his axe and proclaim, "I am with you."
Lord Validar adds his sword to that of Sharadin and the axe of his friend Lord Acerion. "You could not keep me away from this fight with a horde of demons."
Turning to the rest of the team, he will add, "This is the most dangerous battle we will ever have seen. It is also truly the most glorious. Because of the risks, I certainly cannot speak for any of the rest of you." Lord Validar will then look to Corley to see his response, fully expecting the powerful warrior to add his great sword to theirs.

Conquer or Die!
Lyonessa:
Ivy considers Lyonessa’s words for a moment. “You have a point there. I’m not really sure we can know.”
That is what Lyonessa feared. Now that the seed has been planted, her mind is filled with nothing but suspicion and doubt.
Ivy mimics Lyonessa's acceptance to the offer. His willingness to do so strikes a better chord within her, especially with his noble mannerisms. Lyonessa truly wants to believe him and maybe now they will be able to. She will accept his other arm to see where they will be led to.

Laucian
As Laucian cares for the cat he hears Validar’s orders from the cavern echo. He quickly takes another piece of jerky and feeds it to the cat as he carries it back to the others. Placing the cat at his feet Laucian nocks an arrow to his bow and awaits any trouble that may come through one of the tunnels."Archers! Guard the tunnels coming into this cavern and cover them with your bows. I do not expect any attacks, but I do not want to be taken unawares."
Looking back to the others he will say, “I will see this to whatever end,” the elf states, then looks down to his new friend. “You do not have to come, though if you wish to, I will look after you.” If the tabby wishes to come he will then give it the name of Onyx as it best suits its coloring.“We must make haste. Every moment we waste just gives Ember the chance to recover and heal. On this day, Cynalon will no longer tolerate such attacks upon our people and our towns. Today we start to fight back!”

Chareos
With the news of a New King uplifts Chareos’ spirits, adding to Validar’s cry staff in hand.
After a moments hesitation Chareos steps forward his grip on his staff tightening as it hits hard against the cavern floor. “You needn’t ask me Master, You trained me well; It is time to show you just how well.” he says with the same determination he showed when taking up his apprenticeship. “I will stand with you!”
As Argent touches his arm he can’t help but notice the warm touch that lingers long after she moved off. Chareos can’t help but watch her move away.“It’s okay,” Argent will respond as she looks back at Chareos. She’ll touch his arm for a moment, before moving off.
A small smile forms across his features as news of the Fortress relieves some tension though the thought of Ember still grates his nerve."Yes, it was", Lord Sharadin will simply state as he scans the cavern.
“The Duke’s Star-shaped Fortress still stands, Chareos. Drakkimor and his companions were able to drive off the remaining Fire Giants. Corunglain will endure this terrible trial.”
He will return their smiles forgetting which is which, hopefully one of these days he will distinguish one from the other. He says in reply, “It is always easy to say what is true. Yes, these last few days have been tiresome though we shall see them through!”“That’s an awfully nice thing to say,” one of them will comment. Chareos never could tell them apart.
“It looks like you’ve seen some real excitement," the other adds with a smile.
With the news of a New King uplifts Chareos’ spirits, adding to Validar’s cry staff in hand.
His grip tightens on his staff as he watches Acerion, Validar and Laucian answer Sharadin’s call. Uncertainity hits him as he knows he has but few spells remaining though they may not be of use versus a dragon.“We must make haste. Every moment we waste just gives Ember the chance to recover and heal. On this day, Cynalon will no longer tolerate such attacks upon our people and our towns. Today we start to fight back!”
Lord Sharadin will draw his own blade and holding it forth dramatically.

giving chase..
Sherra:
Standing guard, Sherra misses out on introductions and most of the conversation going on between Lord Sharadin and Lord Validar. It seems that there is some news that brings forth a cry, something about a new king. That is quickly followed by a rousing array of oaths being shouted to follow Lord Sharadin. Sherra is uncertain what to make of all of it until Validar turns and addresses the rest of us.
Still, she gave Validar an oath at the beginning of their journeys together, and she isn't one who gives her word so freely, nor one who breaks that word. "Count me in then, Lord Validar," Sherra will finally reply, "you may have need of my abilities to scout out an area that will be ill suited for those of you wearing all that heavy, and quite noisy, plate."
A smile will form on her lips at those last words, as she realizes her needs may extend beyond combat, and for that she can help with easily. Still, it took a while for her normally-easy smile to emerge, but Sherra keeps that concern safely tucked away inside of her.

It would seem they mean to give chase to the dragon, and that thought sits ill with Sherra. She was ineffective against it already, quaking in fear in the might of it as well as her arrows useless against its hide. It is not high on her list of tasks she wishes to undergo.Turning to the rest of the team, he will add, "This is the most dangerous battle we will ever have seen. It is also truly the most glorious. Conversations...
Lord Validar -
"Is it possible for you to scry the beast, Argent?" Lord Validar asks.
“It is possible, but not very probable. Even if I did locate him we still do not have a method of going to his location assuming that he’s not on the other side of the portal.”
"Perhaps not, but information is vital. We would know if the dragon is at the tower or not and if not, then we could still proceed to investigate, should we choose to. We may get some information on where the dragon has gone and who may be allies. Sometimes the answers are not as simple as they appear on the surface. And sometimes the answers you find may lead you in to something unexpected."
“I am doing well. Thank you for asking, Lord Sharadin. Seemingly no side effects from what happened to me.”
Lord Validar catches this odd comment and files it away for future questions. It likely isn't a major issue, but it is one worth mentioning apparently.
Lord Validar will nod respectfully in the elf's direction. "Most pleased to meet you, my good lady," he will say. "You know the enemy we fought here this day?"
“We’ve battled before,” Silvarn will admit with a slight smile. “But never to a satisfactory conclusion. He has Contingency magic on him that whisks him away before the fatal blow can be landed. Sharadin is correct. We must go through the portal and face Ember for the last time.”
"Indeed we shall. Unless the wyrm has managed to spirit itself away to some hidden, unknown spot, then it shall breathe its last this day."
"Count me in then, Lord Validar," Sherra will finally reply, "you may have need of my abilities to scout out an area that will be ill suited for those of you wearing all that heavy, and quite noisy, plate."
So far, Lord Acerion, Chareos, Laucian and Sherra have joined in on the attack against the dragon with Sharadin and Silvarn. Validar waits to see what the rest of them say.

Battle Under Corunglain
Grondar:
As he works, Grondar finds that the smokey air is causing his throat to become dry and raw. He coughs a bit and drinks from his waterskin periodically to keep it from getting too bad.
Startled, Grondar looks up as the flying carpet soars past. It bears three humans and an elven woman. The older man on the carpet introduces the elf to the group, but not himself or the young women with him. Grondar can only wonder who they are. Clearly they know some of the group as they greet Lord Validar, Chareos and Argent by name. The young ladies seem particularly fond of Chareos.
Finally, Validar releaves some of the mystery. The man on the flying carpet is Lord Sharadin; even Grondar has heard of him. While he doesn't know the man, he certainly respects his formidable reputation as a wizard. The younger women are still not introduced, however.
The mention of Ember by Chareos and the elf named Silvarn. Grondar has heard many tales of the great worm. So that was the great Ember?! And from what is said, Opikus and Ember are one in the same. Very interesting.
Having done what he can for their comrades, Grondar moves to join the group. Approaching the flying carpet from the rear, he moves around to the front. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Lord Sharadin," he says with a bow. "Your reputation is well known even among the dwarves. I am Grondar Foehammer, priest of the Revered Mother, Berronar Truesilver." He gestures to the two young women talking to Chareos. "I'm afraid I didn't hear the names of these lovely young ladies who travel with you..."
Turning, Grondar bows to the elven woman as well. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Silvarn. I take it you have some experience with the great worm." Her answer to Validar's question answers his as well.
Validar and Sharadin catch everyone up on the events both here and outside. It seems the attack on the city has been truly broken. Grondar is grateful that the residents are no longer in dire peril.
From the sound of it, the announcement of the new king would seem to be a good thing. The old king has passed the crown to one who is better able to uphold the kingdom. Of course, it means less to him than some of the others, as neither of these is his king. The dwarves have their own king back in Rockhome.
Sharadin urges them to pursue Ember through the portal and asks who will follow him. Many of their group volunteer to go. Grondar believes it is the right thing to do, but is torn by his duty to their injured. "Lord Sharadin, if I may. We have wounded and two are beyond all but the greatest of restorative magics. I myself escaped the battle unscathed, but have a duty to our injured. Yet, despite most of my patron's blessings being used up, I feel that going with you is what Berronar would want. Is there anyone who can take on the responsibility for getting our casualties to those who can help them?"
"That is true; they may be able to help our fallen friends yet - if we can get them out of here and back to those who can restore them.""I would not consider our two fallen companions as lost to us. As you know, we have some powerful friends, including Elspeth of Azrella. I am certain that our fallen comrades will be able to join us once again as the heroes that they are."
"I will attempt to find out what I can when the opportunity arises - which may be awhile. However, the gods are not always forthcoming with answers so, as you say, we may never know.""You may certainly be correct.

Argent
Argent:
Realizing that some people there may not know who the new arrivals are Argent will make quick introductions.
“That is Lord Sharadin, the Archmage of Cynalon. The twins are his daughters, Sherry and Terry. They are both mages as well. Lord Sharadin now controls Karn’s Keep, a giant-built fortress far to the east that was liberated by my previous adventuring band, the Company of the Sword.”
Argent listens intently as Lord Sharadin explains what has transpired. Many have privately thought that the Kingdom has been stagnant under the rule of Victor the 7th. That events from his youth had traumatized him into being to cautious. In later years his rule seemed contradictory-- making a choice and then changing his mind a few days later. A new, stronger ruler can only be a benefit for all.

“I will make the attempt, milord.” Argent will set her Bag of Holding on the ground and start to fish through it for her Crystal Ball. Then she’ll use a spare dress to make a holder for the ball and try to locate the dragon through it.Lord Validar wrote:"Perhaps not, but information is vital. Argent does a double take upon hearing that. The suspicion that this Silvarn is not really an elf rises in her mind.Lord Sharadin wrote:That was when Silvarn picked up the scent of Ember and that is what led us down here.
“I’ll let you all you big strong heavily armored men lead the way. While I have no desire to get close to this Ember, I do want to see what sort of magical treasures and spells he has in his possession!” Argent will go through the portal, but near the end of the procession.Lord Validar wrote:"This is the most dangerous battle we will ever have seen. It is also truly the most glorious. Because of the risks, I certainly cannot speak for any of the rest of you."

Aria
Aria:
While many of the others are bothered by the oppressive atmosphere, Aria is not one of them. She’ll glance in the direction of the new arrivals and is ready to use her throwing axe, but holds off, as they are friendlies.
Having been among humans during her time in Corunglain, Aria is aware that a new king has long been desired. Time will only show if this is a good thing or not.
Aria takes an immediate liking to this Sharadin when he insists of going after the dragon and slaying it before he has time to recover.
“Then lets get going then! Me axe be ready to rend dragon hide!”
To Grondar she’ll add, “Looks like we might be having dragon steaks after all!”
“As my pappy used to say, ‘Thems good eats!”Grondar chuckles in appreciation at the axe-mistress' enthusiasm, courage and ferocity. "Admittedly, I've never had the opportunity to try dragon steaks, Lady Aria, but perhaps that oversight will be corrected someday."

Lord Corley
Corley:
When the elfin archer calls out that she’s found something, Lord Corley will go to investigate. He coughs every so often on the foul air within this cave. The smell of battle rarely is pleasant.
But Corley is called back after taking only a few steps forward. Lord Sharadin and his delightful daughters have arrived! Lord Corley had met the mage in passing before. The wizard frequently worked in concert with his father, General Logan.
“Well met, Lord Sharadin and your lovely daughters as well! I bid you welcome, Lady Silvarn.”
For a moment Lord Corley is most conscious of his current physical appearance. Between the smoke and all the blood, he must be quite a sight. It’ll take days to properly clean his armor.

“Indeed! Long live the King!”Lord Validar will raise his sword at the news. "All hail, King Victor! Long live the King of Cynalon!"
The great sword is there, as if there was ever any doubt. “Let us finish what we have started here this day! Let us deliver the head of this dragon to our new king!”Turning to the rest of the team, he will add, "This is the most dangerous battle we will ever have seen. It is also truly the most glorious. Because of the risks, I certainly cannot speak for any of the rest of you." Lord Validar will then look to Corley to see his response, fully expecting the powerful warrior to add his great sword to theirs.

Valena
Valena:
The archer carefully makes her way across the battlefield. Bodies are strewn everywhere and the air is thick enough to make her gag. Water runs from Valena’s eyes from the foul soup that passes for air. How do dwarves stand this?
New arrivals show up and a discussion follows. It seems that they wish to continue the chase for the dragon by passing though this portal.
After some thought, Valena will finally say, “You’ll need some one to keep this side of the portal secure. I'll stay here and stand guard in case any of the orcs get brave enough to come back.”
Valena will offer her hand to the cat so that it can get her scent before attempting to pet the animal.
“Give him to me. I’ll tend to him while you go off with the others.”

“Over here!”, Valena calls out. “I think I found the portal you were looking for!”Valena discovers something unusual in the back wall of one of the side chambers. There is a spot where the omni-present haze does not exist. Reaching out, her hand passes through this area and vanishes! (This is the location of the invisible portal. The haze made it stand out even thought it was not visible to the naked eye.) Valena calls out her discovery.

Spying Laucian and the cat, Valena will approach. “Who’s your friend, Laucian? Where did you find him?”Laucian wrote:Looking back to the others he will say, “I will see this to whatever end,” the elf states, then looks down to his new friend. “You do not have to come, though if you wish to, I will look after you.” If the tabby wishes to come he will then give it the name of Onyx as it best suits its coloring.

Laucian
He will introduce himself to Silvarn and the others upon his arrival of seeing them, “It is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Milady."
“I think I will name him Onyx,” he says as he pets the tabby’s head.
As Valena offers her hand to the cat he will say jokingly with a smile, “Watch yourself, he is liable to eat your hand, hungry one this one is.”
Giving the cat a few pets and scratches behind its ears Laucian hands the cat to Valena, “Thank you.”
As the column moves to the Portal, Laucian will be ready to walk through with his Bow nocked and drawn.
