X-Factor #5 - "The Circus Comes to Town"

Recap:

Recent news has Blizzard turning up in New York City, where he helped Freedom League foil a plot by the Ultimates. Blizzard later joins the team.

Back in Los Angeles, the circus has come to town and Spectrum decides to go and check it out. In addition to the usual rides and games, the sideshow features fortunetellers and a 'Zuvembie Lord' who performances what he claims to be voodoo magic.

The show under the big top begins and the production is rather lavish. Clowns, acrobats, fire-breathers, trained animal acts and a traditional strong man complete the entertainment. One of the more bizarre acts has a young albino man running an act involving bats. The bats fly through hoops, perch on his shoulder and do other tricks.

The owner of the circus, one Thomas Prest, acts as the ringmaster and is a big hit with the audience. A good time is had by all.

There is an odd story on the late news that night. It involves production of a horror movie, a remake of the infamous Plan 9 from Outer Space staring the unlikely combination of Mel Gibson and Jane Seymour. Production had to be moved because of sudden downpours of rain at the original location.

Next morning, Jim learns that his book publisher Rachel Moret's home was broken into. Ms. Moret was awakened in the night and discovered a thief in her room. She screamed loudly which alerted the attention of a passing police officer. According the Ms. Moret's eyewitness report, the intruder picked up the policeman and shoved him head first through a wall.

The intruder then fled. Even stranger, nothing was stolen and there were no signs of forced entry. Rachel did not see the intruder's face, but did notice that was dressed in all black. The policeman is in a coma due to a skull fracture from the attack. The police tried to contact the Guardians for assistance by were unable to make contact with the hero team.

Later on, Morning Star and Spinnerette interrupt Spectrum's work out. Spin seems to have a problem. She can't find her Guardian teammates! She returned to their base last night and they were gone. No signs of a break in and no word on where they went. Spin was hoping that maybe Spectrum had heard something. He had not.

Suddenly, the gym goes all black and Spectrum brightens the area to reveal the Void. Spinnerette goes on the attack but passes harmlessly through the ebony villain. A ghostly white hand emerges from Voids chest and grabs Spinnerette, causing her to scream in pain.

Spectrum blasts Void and Morning Star goes on the attack. Void claims that he's here looking for Shadow Queen, but has been unable to find her. Not surprising since Sque left the team days ago. Spectrum's light power harms Void, but Void's ghostly hand touches Spectrum in retaliation. Spectrum is down and dazed from the attack.

Morning Star helps Spectrum back to his feet. The pair then notices two others now in the gym. Icicle is there with a man in black and silver armor. A wisp of smoke clings to his gauntlets and Void is now down on the floor. Realizing that he is outnumbered Void phases away and flees.

Morning Star is relieved that Spectrum withstood the effects of Void's hand so well. She had seen him take out Brute before and is impressed. Together they go to greet the newcomer. Spin recognizes the man as Photon.

To that Photon says, "That's right, sweetheart. I was nearby and heard a battle going down, so I thought I'd lend a hand. I would've knocked, but there's such a big hole in the wall, I figured you must be havin' an open house or somethin'. Actually, I was on my way here for a reason: I want to join your team!"

X-Factor #6 - "Terror by Night"

Recap:

No clues are turned up on the missing Guardians and Photon is made a probationary member of the team. Spectrum finishes up a patrol and swings by Rachel Moret's place. Spinnerette and Photon are currently there, talking to the police. The pair had been looking into the incident at Rachel's home the night before.

Spin compliments Photon on his investigator skills and the discovery that he made. With Photon leading the way, the heroes move into Rachel's bedroom. A circle ticket stub was fond near the nightstand, but it wasn't Rachel's. Photon also found bat hairs caught in the drapes. Much to Spin & Spec's surprise, Photon announces that they are dealing with a vampire.

Returning to the X-Factor Base, SIMON informs Jim that he has plans for the evening. Seems that the team is having dinner with Julie (Shockwave) and her beau. They seem to have some sort of announcement to make.

Later that night at a very expensive restaurant, Jim, Denise, and Jennifer are having dinner with Julie and her boyfriend Mike Parkins. He's a very wealthy industrialist and the president of Berring International. Their big announcement is that they are getting married! It was love at first sight between the two.

Their second big announcement is that Mike is going to bankroll a real base for the team as compensation for taking Julie away. Julie plans on retiring from being Shockwave once she's married. They are getting married in a month.

It's nearly midnight before the team returns to the base. Spin and Photon are there waiting for them. Spin announces that things are starting to get weird. Not only are the heroes dealing with a vampire, but now zombies as well!

The heroes were keeping an eye on Rachel Moret's home and they noticed an unusual number of bats in the area. They caught one and it had a tag saying that it was from the circus Rachel had attended.

Then, Photon stopped in to catch some of the filming of the remake from Plan 9 From Outer Space. They were filming the climatic 'rising from the earth' scene when the zombies in the movie were attacked by the real thing! The director got the whole thing on tape.

The night passes by without incident, but Jennifer does have nightmares from all the talk of vampires and zombies. Next day, Photon does some more investigating at the circus. He thinks he's figured out whats going on and alert the team. That night, X-Factor stakes out Rachel's home. When they arrive, they find a strange mist hovering inside Rachel's bedroom!

X-Factor #7 - "The Feast of Blood"

Recap:

X-Factor moves out, circling the house. Spectrum goes in through Rachel's bedroom window, while the mist moves out the window. It solidifies outside and turns into Mr. Prest, the owner of the circus! In actuality, he is an ancient vampire known as Baron Heinrich.

Photon acts, striking the vampire with his silvery light, nearly slaying the vampire. Heinrich turns into mist to escape damage. The rest of the team moves in and Spectrum tries to blast the vampire. Heinrich summons a bolt of lightning that sends the team scattering.

When the team gathers their wits, Heinrich is standing over Icicle and brings her under his mental domination. Under the ancient vampires command, Icicle attacks her teammates.

Spectrum goes to deal with Icicle while the rest of the team continues the attack. Spinnerette is over powered and knocked unconscious by Heinrich. Photon blasts the vampire again. Morning Star moves in and slams the vampire with a tree she ripped up, shattering it into millions of fragments.

It doesn't even faze the vampire! A retaliatory punch sends Morning Star flying backwards. Heinrich turns back into mist, daring the heroes to follow him.

Icicle is overpowered and the vampire's spell over her is broken. The team follows the vampire to the circus. The team follows him into the Hall of Mirrors...

X-Factor #8 - "The Funhouse"

Recap:

Issue starts out with some answers to questions Specs had. The first one was why Photon wanted to join the group. His answer:

Well, basically, he's been around for a little while, but now he wants to get into the limelight, having operated in the underground up until now. Of course, if YOU were a monster hunter, it'd be kind of tough to operate out in the open. People don't exactly believe in monsters. He picked your group to try to join because it is fairly new and also you have just lost some members, making it a little easier to get a chance to join. Also, you've not been prejudiced in who you work with. Some think he's a little strange considering his 'hobby'.

There is also some background on Morning Star:

Quite awhile ago you asked me for some background info on Morning Star. I never did give that to you, so here it is: Morning Star is one of the most respected heroines around. Originally, she worked with Spinnerette as a duo, then the two joined the then newly forming Guardians. It was here that she gained most of her reputation. It was also with them that she developed her most deeply seated fear. She is terrified of heights. During one of the team's biggest battles with the Zodiac, the fighting eventually led to the top of the Empire State building. In a gang-up from Taurus, Aries, and Capricorn, she was thrown from the top. She barely survived the fall. Eventually the physical wounds were healed, but the emotional ones still remain.

Eventually she left the Guardians to go her own way. She had some things that she needed to do on her own. She even took some time off from the super-hero business to pursue her first love, racecar driving. The adventurer in her wouldn't sit still and she came back full-time.

Her full name is Denise Marie Long.

Back to the story:

The team pursues the ancient vampire Baron Victor Heinrich into the Hall of Mirrors at the circus. Spectrum leads Morning Star and Icicle through the entrance, while Spin and Photon go in through the exit.

While the Spectrum leads the heroines through the maze, all three are sucked into mirrors and then deposited in another chamber somewhere underground. They follow a long corridor out of the room they landed in and emerge in another chamber. It resembles a large barrel shaped room made out of glass that is spinning, creating a disorientating effect.

Spectrum picks up both Morning Star and Icicle with the idea of lying through the strange room. However, a wild array of laser fire fills the chamber and Specs is hit several times before he can reach the exit and falls to the floor.

As soon as the heroes are on the floor, the laser fire stops. However, the spinning causes disorientation and the floor is unnaturally slick. Icicle creates a bubble of ice around the three and then slides them out of the strange chamber. (Her ice reflects light based attacks.)

After recovering from the strange barrel room, the heroes are confronted with a maze. Spectrum hears something and comes to a stop. Heavy breathing is heard close by. "Maybe Heinrich is making an obscene phone call", Spectrum suggests.

Suddenly, the heroes find themselves face to face with a minotaur! It fires energy blasts from its horns and sends Morning Star flying. A minor fight erupts with the trio eventually defeating the strange creature.

Exiting the maze, the heroes find themselves in a strange upside down room with furniture on the ceiling! They catch up with Spinnerette and Photon here.

Continuing on, the group reaches another room and is attacked by what appears to be gargoyles. In the room beyond that, X-Factor finally finds Baron Heinrich. The room starts to spin as the heroes go on the attack. The vampire is unusually quiet and the reason for that is revealed with Morning Star, literally, knocks his block off! It's a robot!

A hatch opens up and the heroes enter. The hatch leads to yet another room where the heroes are separated by force fields and dropped down into chutes. Spectrum emerges in what appears to be a tomb. Laying on top of a raised platform is Rachel Moret wearing a simple white dress. She is either asleep or dead.

Spectrum goes to check and Rachel starts to come around. Suddenly, Rachel bares fangs and plunges them into Spectrum's neck! Spectrum fights back and blasts Rachel only to discover that she's yet another robot. Taking the only passage out of the tomb, Spectrum comes to a six-way intersection. Icicle is waiting there. She claims she was attacked by a big rock-like creature.

Morning Star comes out of another passage soaking wet. She was attacked by the Creature from the Black Lagoon! Finally, Photon and Spin arrive. Photon was attacked by Frankenstein, while a bloody Spin was confronted by a werewolf.

Following the remaining passage, X-Factor once more comes face to face with Baron Heinrich. The real one this time. He congratulates the team on passing his tests and dares them to attack him.

Everyone rushes to attack, but the vampire turns into mist once more. The floor suddenly springs up and everyone is sent upward through a series of shafts, twisting and turning like a bizarre roller coaster ride.

Finally, the shaft ends and the heroes are deposited in front of the circus grounds. Its almost dawn and they can see that the circus is at the end of the long process of being taken down. Almost everything has been loaded up onto trailers.

Several of the team are eager to go after Heinrich again, until Morning Star points out that they can't prove anything they say Heinrich did. It his word against theirs.

The team returns to base with Spectrum stopping off at Rachel's to make sure she's okay. Ms. Moret is safely asleep in her bed.

Once back at the base, Spectrum can see smoke billowing out of the base. Flying inside, he finds SIMON trying to put out fires and move debris. Apparently there was an explosion and it was centered on Morning Star's quarters. The heroine is dug out unharmed, but very groggy.

'Star explains that she was just climbing into bed when four of the Crimson Claw's flunkies broke in. They said that this was payment for interfering with his contest.

Later that night, after Spectrum gets up, he learns that the circus has moved on to British Columbia. The heroes consider follow to continue their battle against Baron Heinrich.

However, those plans get interrupted by something Photon sees on the television set. Rushing to where Photon is watching TV, they see a man in a spiked helmet on the screen giving some kind of speech:

"....and I, Timemaster, the world's most powerful supervillain, have an announcement to show the world. I have succeeded where all others before me have failed. I have slain the Guardians!"

The camera pulls back to show a large metal slab. On it rest five costumed figures: Hornet, Sidewinder, Lazerblast, Manta Man, & Duplicator.

"Only Spinnerette has eluded me. But not for long. I will deal with her and her friends in good time. Then the whole world will soon fall before the might of Timemaster! Hahahahaha!"

Diana just stands there staring at the screen, teeth and fists clenched in fury and tears streaming down her face.

"I'm going to get him. If it's the last thing I do."

Comments:

Its been a long time coming, but finally a new Old Stuff recap! Muskateer and I have decided to not really worry about giving things away in the Old Stuff any more for a couple of reasons.

1 - Given how slowly the main site is progressing, some of these situations and scenarios might simply never come to pass anyway.

2 - Even if we do re-do some of these things, there's no guarantee that they will turn out exactly the same way. There are different characters involved for one thing. So, knowing how we did something the first time around does not mean you'll know who it will turn out next time!

There was quite a bit of material involved in those four issues. XF #8 was nearly as large as #5-7 combined!

Yep, Photon was a member of X-Factor! Probably will be again. A couple of reasons we haven't gotten this far include Photon being busy elsewhere. He just did a guest shot in the Avengers that involved vampires, so doing another vampire story so soon didn't seem like a good idea. Secondly, Rachel Moret has yet to be introduced in the main site. (She does appear for the first time in the forthcoming Spectrum #33.)

The attack by Void and the later bombing of the XF base all tied into the GSVC. Finally having had enough of this, the team does something about it in the next X-Factor issues.

Shockwave getting married was quite a surprise as well. Her original first name as Julie and Spin's was Diana. Musky changed them for the site.

The Funhouse was quite bizarre. I wonder why they built it underneath a traveling circus so fast?

As was per our nature, everything was done from Spectrum's point of view, so that's why anything anyone else did seemed to happen off camera.

Ah... Another V&V adventure rears it's head (can't remember the name, though). Very nice.

I was surprised by the joining of Photon. He just seems like the ultimate 'loner' character. Kind of like the Punisher - who has teamed up a few times, but it never seems to work out; he just doesn't fit.

Oh well, thanks for the entertaining read,

No need to look any further than the thread title: "Terror by Night". Musky picked up about a dozen or so V&V modules. He used some on me and I used some on the Q folks.

Yeah, Photon was a member of XF. That's how he ended up with his own origin mini-series! I sort of let that slip when I mentioned that Musky wrote several mini's involving XF members. He wrote the Photon one, so it wasn't a tremendous leap of faith to conclude that Photon was an XF member.

I really don't know if he will be again or not. More up to Musky than me. This time around he's been more hesitant to have people quite XF than the first time around. Like Blizzard, who's been around far more then he ever was the first time around. Plus we have added new members-- Sabre & Mockingbird-- who weren't around the first time either. So, to add more members we probably should get rid of some of the current ones and we haven't been too eager to do that. Basically, everythings up in the air!

Photon was in and out of X-Factor. He still had his loner ideas and had disappeared when everything ground to a halt. I like the character. He and Spin ended up getting along quite well. Also there was something in these files that led to future events in LH for those two. How about that for linking from one end of the spectrum to the other?

I don't really see us getting rid of anyone in XF, except for Blizzard. So Photon may take his place. Hard to say what will happen until we write it!

These characters have a mind of their own sometimes!

D'oh! :x As if that wasn't bloody obvious enough... Guess I forgot to switch my brain on again. It gets so little use these days.

Actually, I'd kind of hate to see Blizzy go. Love his attitude; he makes a nice foil for the rest of the team. Of course, having him and Icicle on the team is a bit duplicative in terms of powers, so I guess that makes him the most expendable.

Musky and I have had discussions about this and it is not our intent to simply have Bliz drop off the face of the Earth. He'll still have strong ties to XF and the Spectrum titles. Plus Heroes for Hire could always put in an appearance or two in the upcoming online game. It'll be a nice place to showcase those folks who don't get enough appearances in the main stuff. And given just how slow stuff is moving, it could literally be years before Blizzard departs XF!

Yes, things have been moving quite slowly. Just part of the nature of this sort of thing. Life comes first and hobbies come second, unfortunately. Wish I would win the lottery and we could work just what we want and play as much as we want!!
