Round 5:
Ivy has been killed by the trolls and the fighting intensifies. Lord Acerion fights back his grief and attacks the troll standing over Ivy's body. The Axe of the Valorous slices easily through the troll and blood, gore, and body parts go flying across the immediate area.
Seeing that troll dealt with, Lord Validar moves to engage the one harassing Arocken. The nobleman strikes fires and the last troll goes down from the wound inflicted on it.
However, that is not the end of the trolls. Another troll breaks free from the web and moves to attack. Validar is ready for this new foe and slashes him with his sword. The beast's attacks are repelled by his armor.
While all this is going on, Grondar moves among the warriors and uses his own innate healing powers to restore some of Lord Acerion's health. Orc warriors attack the pair while this is going on and but seem almost unnoticed and their assaults do no harm. Close by, Sherra pours oil over one of the downed trolls and lights it on fire. Sherra and Validar are struck by enemy bolt fire for minor damage.
The fighting continues across the front lines. Chareos smashes back another orc while Lord Corley takes out two. However, others scramble to replace the fallen fighters. Chareos takes a sword strike and endures another round of bolt hits but remains standing. Lord Corley's magical ring heals his wounds as he inflicts them upon his foes.
Behind the lines, the mages and archers target the orc leader once more. Argent hits him with her own Lightning Bolt and more damage is done. The forked bolt clears a path all around the leader and his followers struck by the magic fall. It is now easier to pick the leader out from amongst the pack of invaders.
Lyonessa follows this up and attempts to Blind the orc leader. Mystra and Tymora are with the Songstress and her magic succeeds! The orc leader has been struck blind!
The archers home in on the orc leader and fire. Valena hits him once while Laucian lands a pair of shafts. The last shaft is the killing blow and the orc leader finally falls! Those closest to him are stunned to see their seemingly invincible leader fall in battle!
The ranged attacks continue to rain down on the Guardian archers and mages. Laucian is hit by two arrows, while Lyonessa is hit by an arrow and a bolt. Valena is struck by three arrows while Argent is completely missed.
The conflict on the left flank continues just as fierce against the bugbears. Both Aria and Rathlar down a bugbear. Rathlar is hit in return, but Aria is unscathed. Rathlar's wolves continue to attack a bugbear on the ground.
The enemy along the front line continues to fight with feverous intensity, seemingly unaware that their leader has fallen. Those further back are more aware and most simply hesitate while some begin to move back.
In the back of the grand cavern, the drow move off just as quickly as they appeared. Even the bugbears tossing spears seem to hesitate.
Unexpectedly the air near the fallen leader shimmers and an old man appears. He has long graying red hair, a full beard, and a bushy mustache. The man wears black silk robes embroidered with gold and silver.
"Dek, you fool!", the old man rages as he stares at the fallen orc.
To the enemy forces all around him, the old mage screams out, "Fight, you worthless vermin! Fight or death will be the least of your worries!"
That seems to renew some of the desire to fight amongst the orc army, but it can still be seen that most are not eager to take on the Guardians.
Turning, the old mage unleashes his rage towards the group. "This is all your doing! You dared to interfere with my plans and now you will pay the price of your meddling! Now you will all die!"
The old mage begins to cast a spell…

Battle Under Corunglain
Grondar:
The battle continues to rage unchecked. The punishment dealt out by both sides is fearsome indeed. Concentrated efforts even manage to take out the final orcish leader. *May Berronar be praised!* Two more of the trolls are felled as well, though yet another breaks free and assaults their ranks where it is met by Lord Validar.
Noting Sherra mere steps away lighting the body of one of the trolls, Grondar takes the briefest of moments to smile at his friend. "Great work, my friend!"
Unfortunately, they are taking a beating as well. Grondar notes with some distress the shear number of injuries his companions have taken and are continuing to suffer. Lyonessa appears the worst off, but she has the power to aid herself. Still, Grondar is tempted to focus on healing as many of his friends as possible.
Just then, a new leader - this one apparently an aged human - appears amongst their foes and vows their deaths. All thoughts of healing vanish from Grondar's head at this sudden crisis. This mage must be stopped.
Fortunately, Grondar has just the spell for the job. If only he can get the spell off in time... Calling on his patron deity, Grondar attempts to cast Silence 15' Radius just in front of the enemy mage.
"Of course, Aria. I have no wish to slight any of our worthy gods. Clangeddin deserves the fealty and respect of all our people. And yes, we do have much to do here before we can begin this great quest."Aria wrote:"Do not forget Clangeddin Silverbeard. It is the Father of All Battles we Stonehand's hold in high esteem, next to Moradin Soul-Forger. Regardless there is much yet to be done here in Corunglain. Our plans will have to wait a while longer."

Not needing any further encouragement, Grondar races over to Lord Acerion. Placing his hands on the mighty warrior's back, he allows the healing power of Berronar to flow through his hands into the noble lord.Aria wrote:"Go where you are needed, Grondar. The line will hold and the blood of our enemies shall drench the parched ground!"

The threat increases....
Lord Validar -
Lord Validar is pleased to see the trolls on their flank go down. Lord Acerion kills one and that frees him to drop the one menacing Arocken. Shaking his head as he stands, Arocken regains his feet next to the noble warrior.
Elation comes as the trolls are dealt with and they drop the Orc Leader. The tide has turned, Validar thinks, but only for a moment. His elation is measured in mere seconds.
A moment later, Validar sees one of the trolls rip through the Webbing and mount a rush at their position. Validar strikes the troll once in the head as it scrambles up the terrace. It tries to claw and bite at his legs, but his magickal armor is more than a match for the beast's talons and teeth. "Help me dispatch this foul monstrosity, my friend," Validar says to Arocken. "There is more evil on the battlefield."
Validar sees the mage, Opikus apparently, enter the scene. He rages for a few moments and threatens the Guardians with their lives. "We are closer to death, but closer to victory, with this one's appearance!", Lord Validar shouts, as much to himself as to anyone.
"The mage is the key to victory! Guardians attack!" Lord Validar knows the troll is too dangerous to disengage from, so he concentrates on the misshappen monstrosity as he shouts above the din. "Spread out! Fighters advance and charge! Hit him with everything you've got left!"
Lord Validar knows that bunched as they are currently, a Fireball would hit nearly half of them, if not more. Their vulnerable members would not likely survive the magickal attack. "Hold! Silence! He must not cast a spell! Archers! Target the mage!" And a Fireball may be the least of their worries, Validar thinks to himself, wondering just how powerful this mage is and if he really is even human.
While battling the troll, Validar thinks for a moment of what Crysania said. Opikus was the mage's name and he watched from a crystal tower. he blamed someone for the death of his mother. Someone in Corunglain? Someone in Cynalon? Validar does not have more time to think about these details.
Lord Validar knows that his allies on that side surely must be aware of the dire nature of this new threat. However, those on the left flank and caught in the frontlines may need some direction. Regardless, he cannot help himself continuing to communicate while battling the troll. "Arocken, help me with this troll, so I can disengage." Lord Validar will stay in melee with the monster, but move slightly away from the center of the group, circling the beast and try to be even a few steps closer to the mage.
"Lord Corley! Try to break through the line! Push towards the mage! Chareos! Disengage and hit the mage as well with magick!" Lord Validar tries with all his might to end the troll's existance as quickly as possible. He takes another look at the webbing to see how many more of the trolls are soon to break loose as well. Now, it is a measure of skill and speed, the noble warrior thinks to himself. Truly this will be their greatest test.

Arocken -
The elfin ranger shakes his head to clear it, recovering from the stunning blow. A moment later he is on his feet.
Lord Validar kills the troll that was facing him and another soon follows in its stead.
"Help me dispatch this foul monstrosity, my friend," Validar says to Arocken. "There is more evil on the battlefield
"Indeed I shall!", Arocken responds. "We will win this day or die trying."
"Arocken, help me with this troll, so I can disengage." Lord Validar will stay in melee with the monster, but move slightly away from the center of the group, circling the beast and try to be even a few steps closer to the mage
"I will hold this flank!" Arocken understands, seeing the mage now on the battlefield. This may be a more terrible fight than even the Seige of Gateway, Arocken thinks as he attacks the troll. He also tries to circle the monster, while still engaged, in the other direction from Validar. He understands that moving away from the center may be enough to save some from any incoming spell effects.
Once the troll is downed, Arocken checks to see if more trolls are a threat. If so, he will move to engage them or change to bow and fire at the mage, if no trolls are menacing them.

Laucian
(Note: If Laucian simply misses, then he will fire again.)
As the last arrow shaft finds its target, Laucian lets out a grin of satisfaction as he watches the Orc leader fall to the ground and those about it standing still in shock! Laucian’s elation is short-lived as the seering pain of arrowheads rend into his flesh. Grimacing he takes them out and tosses them to the ground before him.The archers home in on the orc leader and fire.
As the new threat appears and makes his displeasure known, Laucian is already making ready to attack. Drawing a single arrow he will launch it toward the mage hopefully hitting him. Though after hearing Lord Validar’s warning of Magic Missile’s rebound at Chareos, Laucian merely fire one arrow. If it pierces the Mage's defense he will then send another volley at the mage. If it does not Laucian will cast Summon Swarm and center it upon the Mage.Unexpectedly the air near the fallen leader shimmers and an old man appears.

Chareos
Swinging his quarterstaff with an even, yet strong swing Chareos pounds it into an orc. As it is half-way down another orc steps in to fill the gap. He has to admire their tenacity unfortunately he is feeling it first hand, as a sword strike falls upon him.
With his orders given Chareos obeys knowing full well that any moment may be his last anyway. Chareos will back away if he is able and cast his Melf’s Acid Arrow at the Mage.

“I will try,” he yells back as blood spatters about his mouth. ”Though the relentless bastards keep coming!!!”"Lord Corley! Try to break through the line! Push towards the mage! Chareos! Lyonessa:
Lyonessa follows this up and attempts to Blind the orc leader. Mystra and Tymora are with the Songstress and her magic succeeds! The orc leader has been struck blind!
"Praise to you, sweet Mystra," Lyonessa says softly through parched lips. She manages a smile as she sees arrow after arrow strike the now-blind, and probably confused and raging, orc leader until he finally goes down. Her elation is struck short just as quickly though as she is hit even further.
The ranged attacks continue to rain down on the Guardian archers and mages. Laucian is hit by two arrows, while Lyonessa is hit by an arrow and a bolt. Valena is struck by three arrows while Argent is completely missed.
Lyonessa staggers under the new attacks, but keeps standing. She knows she needs to heal her wounds, but a new enemy appears. One that could spell doom for all of them if they do not act quickly.
"By Mystra, he shall not," she will reply, although she doubts her voice carries far enough to reach Validar's ears. Even though sorely wounded, she still has her recent success with her last spell giving her confidence. She will cast her Hold Person on the enemy mage, targeting only him.

Turning Point (part II)
Lord Validar -
The Guardians move to attack the newly arrived mage, many of them forgoing self-preservation to do so. The noble warrior is very proud of his comrades, as he realizes the turning point they just passed has been nullified by the new threat.
Validar grits his teeth knowing that should they fail on the first volley to wound, or at least physically hinder, the mage before he can cast his spell, many of them may fall. A fleeting thought rushes through Validar's brain: What if that mage is really a dragon? He hopes it is just a strange, random thought and that they have an easier foe to deal with. Even more reason for the group to spread out now however.
Validar continues his assault against the troll, hoping to kill it or at least wound it sufficiently to let Arocken finish it off. While fighting, Validar realizes that the mage likely arrived from the magickal mirror that Crysania mentioned. Like the one the beautious Kharyna told him about, it is a two-way transporter, until closed. If they can kill the enemy and no one else is 'back there' to close it, then they could follow on to where the Crystal Tower is and perhaps where the ruling members of Corunglain were taken.

Conquer or Die!
Acerion
Acerion:
Ivy has been killed by the trolls and the fighting intensifies. Lord Acerion fights back his grief and attacks the troll standing over Ivy's body. The Axe of the Valorous slices easily through the troll and blood, gore, and body parts go flying across the immediate area.
Acerion intercepts the troll before Validar can strike it down. There is no satisfaction or comfort in killing the troll. Acerion fails to feel much of anything at the moment.
Barely aware of Grondar's presence, he does feel the effects of the dwarven priest. Bloodshot, sore eyes find the dwarf and Acerion nods his thanks grimly. The sounds of battle are almost unrecognized and barely audible to his ears, and his eyes barely make out Sherra as she pours oil onto one of the fallen trolls or Validar as he fights yet another troll.
"The mage is the key to victory! Guardians attack!" Lord Validar knows the troll is too dangerous to disengage from, so he concentrates on the misshappen monstrosity as he shouts above the din. "Spread out! Fighters advance and charge! Hit him with everything you've got left!"
Spinning, he sees orcs all around, still pressing the attack. Acerion bellows and leaps into the mass of orcs, covered in troll blood as well as his own. His eyes still wild, he swings his axe like a maniac, cutting a path to the enemy mage.

a grim task
Sherra:
The appearance of the mage doesn't settle well with Sherra. She would rather be firing arrows into his cursed hide, but that's out of the question. She only hopes the rest can dispatch him quickly.
Should any enemy reach her, she will use the flaming torch on them since it's the only real weapon she is wielding at the moment. She keeps one of her knives between her teeth while using the oil and torch on the trolls.
"Maybe so, but not my favorite of tasks," Sherra replies through clenched teeth as she gets hit with another bolt. She moves as quickly as she dares making sure to stay clear of melee combat so she can finish off the rest of the trolls. She is also careful not to set Ivy's body on fire. Sherra isn't sure there is anything further they can do for her, but a proper burial is the least they should do.Close by, Sherra pours oil over one of the downed trolls and lights it on fire. Sherra and Validar are struck by enemy bolt fire for minor damage.
Noting Sherra mere steps away lighting the body of one of the trolls, Grondar takes the briefest of moments to smile at his friend. "Great work, my friend!"

Round 6:
Dek, the mighty leader of the orcs has fallen! However, his superior, the mysterious mage known as Opikus has appeared, shimmering into existence from seemingly out of nowhere. The old mage rages for a moment and then begins to cast a spell that is guaranteed to destroy his foes. Still the Guardians fight on!
Lord Validar strikes first and fast against the troll he is facing. Two powerful hits later, the beast is down in a bloody heap.
Close by, Lord Acerion turns away from the troll he just dispatched and regards the horde of orcs before him. He lets out an unintelligible yell and leaps at the multitude of foes. The Axe of the Valorous lashes out to the right and to the left leaving dismembered orcs in its path.
Acting nearly as one, Argent, Chareos, and Grondar cast spells at Opikus with surprising results. Argent's Magic Missiles and Chareos' Acid Arrow pass harmlessly through the enemy mage! It's as if he's not really there!
However, when Grondar's Silence spell takes effect you can no longer hear Opikus saying the magical words necessary to cast his spell! The mage is enraged by this development, but you cannot hear his complaints. He turns and begins to walk away from the Guardians and deeper into the grand cavern.
GM Notes:
I stopped the action right in mid-round with the unexpected development that the magical attacks passed harmlessly through Opikus to give those who haven't acted yet the chance to change what they are going to do, should they desire to do so. Only Arocken, Laucian, Lord Corley, Lyonessa, Sherra, Aria, Rathlar, and Valena can alter their plans of attack. Everyone else has already acted as posted above.
Those who do change their actions will act later in the combat round then they will if they do not change. No damage has been inflicted upon the Guardians as the enemy forces haven't attacked yet this round.
The combat map has been updated. The brown area around Opikus is the zone of Silence.

Sherra:
Mostly unaware of the effects of the various spells being cast against the enemy mage by her companions around her, Sherra will continue on her original course of action. These trolls need to be permanently slain, and quickly. They can not afford to have trolls regenerating and rising up to cause havoc, and maybe further painful deaths, once more. Therefore they get a farewell gift of burning oil.

Laucian
As Laucian watches his companions launch various magical assaults upon the mage, Laucian watches in shock as the spells harmlessly sail through the mage's body.
Laucian gets an idea and begins to scan the cavern itself as well as those caverns that are within sight (without moving). Perhaps the mage is within eyesight of the 'phantom'. If no such thing is within sight he will return his gaze to that of the mage, ready to pepper the mage with arrow shafts hoping that they find their target.

Lyonessa:
Preparing to cast her Hold Person spell on the enemy mage, she notices other spells pass through him as if he were a ghost. However the spell cast by Grondar seems to have taken effect. She looks quickly around, as maybe the mage is displaced or lurking nearby. Lyonessa also wonders if because the magic was clerical rather than wizardly if that had something to do with the effects. "Could he be protected from mage spells and not clerical?" she will ask aloud.
Tortured with uncertainty, Lyonessa will cast Hold Person as soon as she seems certain the spell will have a chance of success.

Curious...
Lord Validar -
Lord Validar slashes the troll near him to the ground as he circles slowly. Seeing the troll drop lifeless, he turns to see Argent's Magic Missiles and another Missile spell pass through the mage's body.
Validar considers for a moment. The mage is 'here' and not an illusion or there would be no need to walk away from the Silence. Furthermore, he seems ready to attack and therefore is not likely to be ethereal. They have however fought foes, such as the Lord of Corruption, who where mysteriously able to avoid arrows.
"He may simply be displaced!" Validar will shout with some realization. "Rain arrows into the area! Use Magick arrows if you have them! Dispel his magic!" Validar tries to give suggestions based on the limited knowledge he has about the situation. "Anything with an area effect will be helpful!"
Validar looks to the trolls in the web to see if any more of them seem ready to break free soon.

Arocken watches his friend down the troll that just menaced him. He quickly looks to gauge the progress of the rest of the trolls in the Web. If one has broken free or is about to, Arocken will advance and attack with blades.
Otherwise, he will fire his bow at the mage, moving slightly more away from the center of the group between shots.

Battle Under Corunglain
Grondar:
Hearing Validar's orders match what he was already planning to do, Grondar casts Silence 15' Radius on the mage, whom he believes to be the Opikus mentioned previously. Others cast spells as well, and both mysteriously pass through the mage as though he weren't there. Fortunately, his own spell appears more effective, and Opikus' spell is ruined, forcing him to seek another place from which to cast spells. Grondar has never seen anything like this and cannot explain it in his own mind. Clearly, there is something very magical influencing the spell results.
As the others continue their attacks, Grondar scans for a path through the press of bodies to Opikus. If he can find a route, he knows that he can get there faster than any of the others and take the fight to the mage.
"I'm sorry for that, but know that what you do is vital to our survival here."Sherra wrote:"Maybe so, but not my favorite of tasks," Sherra replies through clenched teeth as she gets hit with another bolt.
Grondar notes the knight's grim thanks. "You're welcome, Lord Acerion," Grondar says, though he has not the time to say more.Acerion wrote:Barely aware of Grondar's presence, he does feel the effects of the dwarven priest. Bloodshot, sore eyes find the dwarf and Acerion nods his thanks grimly.

Round 6 Continued:
Amazingly, Opikus has seemingly ignored Argent's Magic Missile and Chareos' Acid Arrow. The enchantments simply passed through his body! However, a Silence spell from Grondar foiled the mages attempt to cast his own spell. Opikus then begins to walk away from the silenced area.
Seeing this, both Lyonessa and Laucian hold their planned movements. The elfin follower of Ehlonna scans the battlefield in the belief that the real Opikus is somewhere else within the cave. There's too much confusion, beings moving, smoke from the fires and the Pyrotechnics spell, to see the other side of the cave clearly. It is possible that someone could be concealed over there, but it would take time to scan the terrain and locate them. While he scans the cavern, a total of four arrows and bolts strike him, drawing yet more blood.
Lyonessa pauses as she is torn whether to cast her spell at the mage, unsure if it will affect him or not. The delay is a costly one as the half-elfin Songstress is struck by two more arrows. This is followed by a devastating spear that hits her right in the torso. The spear easily penetrates her body and Lyonessa goes down bleeding profusely.
Arocken and Valena follow Validar's instructions and pepper the mage with arrows. All the shafts pass cleanly through the mage, but three of them do strike other targets afterwards. One orc is even killed by this indirect fire.
Lord Corley begins to surge forward. He sweeps his great blade before him to clear a path. A pair of orcs go down. The young noble is struck once in return fire.
Further back, Sherra torches a second troll after sprinkling it with oil. The nearby Web continues to hold the trolls fast, but it's only a matter of time before another breaks free. Four arrows, out of about twenty fired into that area, strike the dark-haired thief further wounding her.
At the other end of the formation the battle against the bugbears continues. Aria downs one of the furry creatures and is struck back in turn. Rathlar slays two with his swords, but also takes return fire.

The Other Side:
Lyonessa feels the pain from the spear for only a heartbeat. Her eyes close and everything goes black, but even this lasts only for a moment. Now freed from its mortal shell, Lyonessa's immortal spirit slips free. It hovers over her body, invisible to all, for a few fleeting moments.
Then her spirit begins to accelerate. In the blink of an eye, it passes through the cavern ceiling and is gone. A bright light surrounds Lyonessa's spirit and she gets the feeling of traveling even faster now. Faster than what one would consider to be normally possible.
In another blink of an eye, Lyonessa finds herself in another place. She is standing among many others in a vast plaza in what, at first glance, appears to be a very large city. A great crystal spire dominates the city and seems to be at its center. Hundreds, if not thousands of other beings are here in the plaza, just as confused and disoriented as Lyonessa is.
As Lyonessa looks around, dozens of orcs simply appear out of nowhere, joining hundreds of their brothers. No one here has armor or weapons. Looking at herself, Lyonessa realizes that she's wearing the robes of a Priestess of Mystra. They are pristine in state.
"No!", a female voice calls out, very close to Lyonessa. "Not you too! I prayed that I wouldn't be seeing any of my friends this soon."
Turning, Lyonessa sees Ivy walking towards her! The Priestess of Azrella is wearing fine blue robes of her faith. There does not appear to be any trace of her mortal wound.
"I am truly sorry that you are also here," Ivy says as she gives Lyonessa a hug. "We have crossed over to the afterlife and this is the City of the Dead."

The battle rages on...
Lord Validar -
Lord Validar is aware of everything around him as the battle rages, from his current vantage point. The enemy continues to rain spears and arrows down upon them and while the armored members of their group are not seriously bothered by this, the others are beginning to feel the toll.
Sherra is hit as she alights another downed troll several times. At least those monsters will not bother them again. They cannot allow more to get free, Validar thinks. That would be disastrous.
The rain of missile fire continues and Lyonessa drops to the ground, blood pooling around her midsection, a spear embedded through her. It only takes a quick glance for the noble warrior to see that she is mortally wounded. Validar has seen much death in his day and already too much this very day. Two of their number have now fallen.
"Move forward!", Validar yells. "Advance on the enemy!" He is certain now that holding this position will only make them a better and better target, both for missiles fire and this foul mage's spells.
Validar does not hesitate in his plans. It takes only a moment for the alterations to their attack to crystalize. They must continue to spread out. They must hold the trolls back. They must eliminate the closest orcs and they must protect their archers and priests. Validar begins to bark out more orders.
"Chareos! Web those trolls in again! We cannot take the chance that any more will get free!" Pointing with his sword to his right, Validar steps forward and away from the opening a little to give Chareos the room he needs to seal those vile monsters in. He joins Lord Acerion in cutting a path through the orcs.
"Argent! Cast your Wall of Fire just past where Opikus is now!" Validar will motion with his sword as he strides towards the orcs, indicating the area. "From the wall there to those outcroppings! Angle back towards your first fireball! We may be able to cut off more of the enemy and reduce the damage from incoming missiles!" If the wizard is real, perhaps it will drive him back into the Silence area or at least cause him to move again. If not, perhaps it will help to eliminate this illusion.
"The mage may just be an illusion! Kill the orcs before him and let us cut a path through to him. Archers, concentrate on the orcs between us and Opikus!" Between killing the closest orcs and the opaque Wall of Fire, they should not only kill off the orcs that are the immediate threat, but also keep most of the ones further in the cavern from being able to see and greatly reducing the incoming missile damage. Even better the heat from the Wall of Fire may wound or kill some of the enemy and should help to drive off those who have wavering morale.
"Try to keep a distance from each other! Do not give the mage a chance to catch many of us in his spell effects! Laucian! Try to Dispel the mage's image. It may at least disrupt his next spell! Archers! Fire at the closest orcs!" The moment lingers. A new turning point has been reached and Validar knows that their ultimate success or failure may be realized in the next few minutes. They have already damaged the humanoids' morale. Another few successes and they may be able to route some of them.
Lord Validar hacks into the orcs alongside Lord Acerion and with the other front-line fighters, driving into the remaining orcs and sending their lifeblood flying with viscious attacks.

LOrd Validar's Henchman
Arocken -
Arocken lets out a yell of frustration as his arrows simply pass right through the figure of Opikus the mage. Clearly this must be some sorty of illusion, the elf thinks, but never had they experienced an illusion that could cast spells.
"The mage didn't actually cast a spell, as yet," Arocken adds. "Perhaps he is just an illusion." With this thought in mind, he wonders to what purpose an illusionary wizard could threaten them. Perhaps to delay them, but delay them for what?
Hearing Validar's directions, Arocken will move towards the orcs and away from the trolls. He checks to make sure that the trolls are indeed covered by the new Web spell as he moves toward the edge of the terrace he is on. (Move to the point on the terrace next to Chareos, the furtherest point into the cave still on the first terrace. From there, he can see all the orcs in the area.)
As long as the trolls are no longer a threat, then he will start to fire arrows at the orcs which are closest, in an effort to open a free path between the fighters and this Opikus.

Lyonessa:
A rush of emotion, confusion, and pain accompanies her, although she doesn't know if it's real or merely a dream, an illusion. could the mage have gotten off a spell? she wonders. no, it was a real death. real. It's over in the briefest of seconds, but it seemed like an eternity. Then she standing with countless others in a place more beautiful than any she has ever seen.
Lost in her thoughts, making no more sense than where she is now, they overwhelm her mind. where am i? am i truly dead, or is this mere illusion? my sister! i'll never be able to find her. my father! how will i ever immortalize my friend's great deeds that i witnessed? no, this isn't real. is it? A voice cuts through her thoughts, fears and questions.
"It's amazing," Lyonessa says, looking about her. "I never dreamed it would be such." Unsure of whether to be happy or sad, or what exactly to do or feel, she'll ask Ivy, "So what do we do now?"

Laucian
As he is preparing his spell Validar calls forth from the front lines "Try to keep a distance from each other! Do not give the mage a chance to catch many of us in his spell effects! Laucian! Try to Dispel the mage's image. It may at least disrupt his next spell! Archers! Fire at the closest orcs!"
With that being said Laucian asks Ehlonna to heed his pray as he begins casting his Dispel Magic upon the Mage’s form.
Laucian groans as the pain in his body becomes apparent due to the arrow and bolt fire. Leaving the deep ones and removing the shallow ones Laucian looks at the image of the mage.Seeing this, both Lyonessa and Laucian hold their planned movements.

Chareos
Chareos will pull back a few more steps as Validar takes his place (Im assuming that’s what happening or I can't read this right =P) and cast a Web at the trolls that are webbed in (Note: Have the same area targeted but a little closer than Argent’s so that they overlap. And seem like one.)

To serve and protect those who cannot.
Clarifying...

By my reading, Chareos already backed away from the front line to cast the Acid Arrow last post. Therefore, he can continue to back away, but is no longer engaged and he took no damage last round.
Validar is moving in on Lord Acerion's left, so basically not exactly where Chareos was, but in the same area and moving forward into the group.
Twenty plus orcs should hopefully not last long against a concerted effort to kill them, between the front-line fighters and the archers and mages.

Conquer or Die!
their morale can break at any time... no, really
Sherra:
Sherra will slide behind some cover, whether it be a rock outcropping, a ledge or whatever, even if she has to merely hug the ground. She will concentrate on her armor to hide her hopefully a little better as she retrieves a Potion of Healing. She will down the entire potion before continuing to burn the remaining troll corpses.
Arrows are flying in and Sherra is struck several times. She grunts with the pain, doing her best to keep from screaming out. She thinks she catches somebody else go down out of the corner of her eye. Was that Lyonessa? she thinks to herself. Doing a mental count, that leaves the group with only one real priest, being her dwarven friend, and she's sure he's going to be very busy. She knows though that a few more arrow hits, if that many, could put her down and out.Further back, Sherra torches a second troll after sprinkling it with oil. The nearby Web continues to hold the trolls fast, but it's only a matter of time before another breaks free. Four arrows, out of about twenty fired into that area, strike the dark-haired thief further wounding her.

Battle Under Corunglain
Grondar:
The battle rages on around Grondar, blood seeming flying everywhere. Many of his companions are wounded further, some critically. Meanwhile, Lyonessa drops, impaled through the chest by a spear. Sadly, Grondar doesn't have time to check her condition more thoroughly.
Lord Validar continues to call out orders to the group. The biggest threat is clearly still this mage known as Opikus. A thought occurs to the dwarf, which he relays to the others. "Validar! Guardians! I recall Kylie using a spell that made her whispish, like unto a ghost. I think she called it Wraithform. Is it possible that this Opikus is using something similar?"
With Ivy and Lyonessa down, Grondar knows that much of the task of healing his fellows has fallen on his shoulders. Looking about, it is clear that their situation is becoming critical. Something must be done.
Glancing down, Grondar notes the enchanted mace that was given to Ivy lying not far away. A desperate plan leaps into his mind and, without hesitation, Grondar scoops up the Kiss of Azrella. Raising it high, Grondar begins a fervent prayer.
"Blessed Azrella, please hear me! I come before you in an attitude of supplication. It is true that I am not one of your flock, and it is also true that you and my patron Berronar Truesilver share many of the same values. I believe that the work we do here, combatting this horde of villainny that has invaded Corunglain, is in keeping with your wishes and your greater glory.
"Having lost your servant, Ivy, we are in desperate straights. Our need is great, or I would not ask this boon of you. I beseech you to allow me to use this mace, the Kiss of Azrella, in the manner for which it was intended. I humbly ask this of you in the name of Ivy, the Guardians of the Light, and the Revered Mother."
Not knowing whether his request will be granted, Grondar steps to a spot between Sherra, Chareos and Arocken. If this works, hopefully, all three will benefit. With a quick prayer to Berronar, Grondar converts his Enthrall to a Cure Moderate Wounds and casts it into the Holy Weapon in the manner that he has seen Ivy perform on multiple occasions.

Acerion
Acerion:
Concerns about the enemy mage, trolls breaking the web spell, the apparent death of Lyonessa, all of it reaches his ears, but it is uncertain whether the paladin hears those words. The basic understanding is there, Acerion knows they need to break the enemies' morale and slay any of the enemy leaders still alive, but beyond that, there is no room for anything else. Pain, loss, words unsaid, deeds undone, they all dance in Acerion's head fighting for space and his precious attention.
Acerion keeps his mind set on the single goal, and leaps further into the orcish mob, swinging his holy axe at any foolish enough to stay close to his reach.

Ivy
Ivy:
The feeling of the trolls teeth around her throat quickly fades and Ivy finds herself on an incredible journey to higher planes. Although she knows what to expect from her studies to become a priestess, the experience still leaves her speechless.
"I wasn't ready...," Ivy mutters mostly to herself. "So much left undone..."
When her sight returns, Ivy finds herself in the arrival plaza in the City of the Dead. Her style of dress marks her as a Priestess of Azrella. All around her, more and more humanoids appear. She can't help but wonder if they are the spirits of those slain back in the caves.
Sadly, she finds a familiar face among the vast crowd.
"The City of the Dead is the arrival point in the outer planes for those who have perished. It is said that once we arrive here we'll be judged to determine our proper place in the afterlife. Since we are both priestesses and strong in our faiths, I doubt that'll be an issue. It is said that we'll be called when the time comes to leave here. Then we'll be taken to the lands of our patron where we'll continue to serve them as we did in life."
"The fates of these others vary. Those who have freely given themselves to a god should be taken to that god's home plane. The others, those who are faithless, are condemned to wander the Gray Waste until they cease to be. A horrible end for such selfish beings who couldn't open up their hearts to a greater power."
"But for right now, I too am at a loss. I just hope no one else we know arrives anytime soon."

Ivy is mildly surprised that Lyonessa is unsure what comes next, but does not make an issue of it. Perhaps Mystra's teachings do not focus on the afterlife as much as Azrella's does."No!", a female voice calls out, very close to Lyonessa. "Not you too! Argent
Argent:
Argent's Magic Missiles simply pass through the old mage! The Invoker is momentarily stunned by this development and doesn't speak up right away about the nature of what they are dealing with. In that short span of time, Lyonessa is slain by a spear.
"It's just an illusion!", Argent finally calls out. "It's not displaced or a Wraithform spell in operation. Those magicks do not work that way! The illusion cannot be harmed! Silence deadens all sound within the area, regardless of its source! That is why that spell worked!"
Argent casts Wall of Fire as directed.

If my spell takes effect first, then yours might remove it! Don't do it!"""Argent!
Argent casts Wall of Fire as directed.
I am an Invoker of no small power.
Lyonessa:
Ivy is mildly surprised that Lyonessa is unsure what comes next, but does not make an issue of it. Perhaps Mystra's teachings do not focus on the afterlife as much as Azrella's does.

Then we'll be taken to the lands of patron where we'll continue to serve them as we did in life."
"Right... yes.. of course.." bits and pieces flood back into Lyonessa's mind as she remembers what she had learned. "It was just, so much at once, and then stripped from me in an instant."
"I have no doubt that we will be judged worthy," Lyonessa says without arrogance, "I just had hoped to be able to spread Mystra's word and song, along with those deeds of heroic mortals, a bit longer."
"I guess this will be another parting of ways for us soon as well, once our godesses call for us," Lyonessa says, a bit sad even though she hadn't had much time to get to know Ivy very well.
Suddenly she thinks of Dusk! She had left him behind, not wishing to endanger him, although he could have easily sought her out. She knows what would happen to her if Dusk had perished, but wonders his fate now that she has passed on. Never having had a familiar, she isn't quite certain how it works for the familiar when the summoner meets a tragic end. Hopefully he is just released from the bond and can return home, but maybe that isn't the way it works...

Laucian
"I will do so," Argent calls out. Right before she begins to weave her spell, Argent will call out to Laucian. "Do NOT cast your Dispel Magic! If my spell takes effect first, then yours might remove it! Don't do it!""
Argents voice calls to him and Laucian turns to see. It is only then that he sees Lyonessa's form on the ground, which touches him with sadness.
"I will await the outcome then!", he yells back to the mage.
Laucian will hold his action 'til Argent casts her Wall of Fire. If the fire wall does come into existence Laucian will convert his Summon Insects spell to Heal Valena.
If Argent's spell Fails (nothing happens and no Wall of Fire or it doesn't cause the illusion to disappear) he will then attempt to Dispel the illusion of the mage.

The moment lingers and...
Lord Validar -
"It's just an illusion!", Argent finally calls out. "It's not displaced or a Wraithform spell in operation. Those magicks do not work that way! The illusion cannot be harmed! Silence deadens all sound within the area, regardless of its source! That is why that spell worked!"
Lord Validar's suspicions seem to be validated by their mage Argent. He seems to remember his study of battlefield magicks involving the limitations of illusions. They have advantages, but also limitations. Some are lacking certain sensory outputs. Although at higher levels, mages can actually cast spells through such a projected illusion. This Opikus must be quite powerful indeed. All the more reason to defeat him quickly.
"We must eliminate the illusion and find the true Opikus!"
Lord Validar wades into the orcs and other humanoids behind his shield and enchanted sword, dealing death as he advances.
