Blackflame #5
The search for Sherwood continues! The explorers have defeated on Rock Reptile, but have discovered that Sherwood has been dragged deeper into the monster's lair. More growls can be heard up ahead in the distance.
Nariya crawls up to the four-way intersection seeking traces of which passage Sherwood was taken down and the direction the growls are coming from. Both things seem to be coming from the passage directly in front of the wood elf.
Kylie, still in Wraithform, catches up with Nariya at the intersection. After learning which direction to go, Kylie billows forward to explore.
The tunnel travels onward for about ten more feet before reaching another four way intersection. The noises and growls are louder now and still seem to be coming from straight ahead.
Up ahead in the darkness, Kylie can see something moving towards her-- it's another Rock Reptile! All she can make out is the creatures head and its mouthful of sharp teeth!
Outside the tunnel network and on the cliff side road, Rat watches for his companions to return. Unexpectedly, a shadow passes over him, forcing the halfling to look upwards. High in the sky, a giant bird circles and seems to be coming back…
GM Notes:
Kylie has about a minute or so left on her Wraithform spell.

Receiving the silent signals from Nariya, Kylie forges on. Reaching the next intersection, the growls are clearer and she is able to determine the direction on her own. A moment's hesitation, and another of the stony lizards heaves into view straight ahead.
"This way!" she calls back to the others. Even as she does so, she surges forward. Moving quickly, she intends to pass the creature, hopefully getting it to try to attack her while giving the others time to advance. She wants to get as far beyond it as she can - while still able to see the reptile - before her spell runs out. When that happens, she'll have her Magic Missile ready to use on it or the nearest of it's friends.
Kylie pauses a moment to look at Yusef, not saying anything. Was that real concern she heard in his voice? She still isn't certain what to make of this man.Yusef wrote:"Be careful, Kylie," Yusef says, caution in his voice.

Another Rock Reptile has found Kylie and closes in on her. Kylie rushes forward as well and grimaces as the monster tries to bite her Wraithform body. The ghostly Kylie passes harmlessly around the Rock Reptile and continues on back through the tunnel behind it.

The halfling waits patiently while the others are off in the dark tunnels searching for Sherwood. Suddenly he notices a rather large bird flying overhead. Rat audibly gulps upon seeing it.
"Go away!", Rat calls out, doubtful that it'll pay him any attention. "I'm not your next meal!"
Rat eyes the tunnel and then the big bird overhead. "Better to brave the darkness than be lunch I always say!"

Lilia the Halfling chases after Kylie into the tunnel, but quickly has to stop as she catches up to Yusef. It's hard to tell what is going on from her position. Her sharp elfin hearing picks up more growls and she can tell that they are dealing with more than one creature.
If Lilia is able to see another of these reptiles and lock in on it, she'll cast her remaining Magic Missile at it.

New Beginnings
Kylie:
Kylie gets an uncomfortable feeling from Yusef's smile. Having admitted that he was part demon or something, she is certain that trusting him would be a mistake.
As the lizard creature unsuccessfully attempts to bite her, Kylie flows around it and on down the corridor. Moments later, her spell lapses and she regains solidity. Fortunately, the hallway here is wider and she can move a bit easier.
Ahead, she sees that there is a large cave not much farther down the way. Multiple growls seem to eminate from that direction. Perhaps they will find Sherwood there!
Looking back, she sees the reptile worming it's way toward Nariya and the others. She crawls forward for a peek into the large cave. Remembering the earlier encounter, she remains wary of the possibility of the creatures being perched on the ceiling or walls near the opening and does not emerge from the tunnel itself.
She hears a shout from Nariya, but continues to scan around the inside of the large cave. Depending on how the others do with the lone lizard, she can either use her Magic Missile to help them, or retain it to defend herself from the other creatures here in the cave.

Hearing a snap of teeth but unable to see much beyond Nariya, Yusef can only guess that the rock reptile attempted to bite Kylie and failed. Good.
Sensing motion behind him, he twists his body for a quick look. Lilia, looking like a young female halfling, has caught up with them. "Welcome, Lilia," he says, turning back. "Nariya says one of the creatures is coming, so be ready."

The second Rock Reptile charges Nariya, but the elfin ranger is prepared. She pulls a spear out of her magical quiver and holds it before her, set to receive the lizard's charge.
The monster takes the spear in its soft, fleshy mouth and the spear stabs deeply! The lizard hisses in pain and anger from the damage done to it. It's large, gator-like mouth slams shut, snapping the spear in half.
Angered, the lizard continues forward towards Nariya, but it is moving slower than it was before. Its injuries are slowing it down and it can no longer out run the explorers in these tunnels.
Behind the reptile, Kylie moves forward to see into the second cave. This one is much larger than the first. It is roughly thirty feet across and somewhat circular in shape. The floor of the den is littered in trash, much like the old abandoned den she found earlier. Even with the trash on the floor, the ceiling averages at least seven to eight feet in height.
But what really gets Kylie's attention is that there are three more of these lizard creatures in the chamber and they are closing in on Sherwood! The mage-ranger seems to be unconscious and unable to defend himself.
Unlike these lizards encountered earlier, these ones are much smaller being only about four feet in length. They are within ten feet of each other and are just a few feet before Sherwood's unmoving body.
Outside the tunnel system, Rat crawls into the cave to get away from a large bird that was eyeing him hungrily. Seeing its prey get away, the bird flies off after a time.

"If that is the case, then I suggest that we back off to the cave we just left. It is unwise to battle a foe when they have a superior position on the field. However, the same cannot be said for Sherwood. She sees him slumped, apparently unconscious, as several smaller reptiles - probably children - approach in search of a meal!
Slipping into the cavern, Kylie stands up upon the mountain of refuse. With a word and a quick gesture, she sends a brace of Magic Missiles at the trio of young lizards, one for each.

From the sound and what little he can see beyond the elven woodswoman, Yusef suspects that Nariya has landed a telling blow on the reptilian creature.
"I agree with Lilia, we should try to pull back if we are hard-pressed by this creature. It sounds like you wounded the beast, Nariya, so that may not be necessary."
He waits to see if she moves back past him. If so, he will move to block the passage while facing the creature in a hunched over position on his knees. He'll use his fists to block, parry and strike while moving backwards as best he can.

With the advancing Rock Reptile slowed by its wounds, Nariya has the time to pull out a second spear from her Quiver of Ehlonna. Using the weapon, she thrusts it forward and jabs the monster. The lizard growls in pain once more but slowly keeps advancing.
Nariya stabs the reptile once more, this time inside its open mouth. The spear point drills through the roof of the beasts mouth and emerges out of the back of its head covered in goo. The lizard lets out one weaker roar and perishes.
A bit further ahead, Kylie has found Sherwood and discovers that three smaller reptiles are closing in on him. The young half-elf steps into the cavern and her feet sink a few inches into the trash that litters the floor. She quickly casts Magic Missile and hits each Rock Reptile with its discharge.
The young hiss in pain and then tunnel their way into the trash litter the floor of the cavern. The lizards are quickly lost from sight, but Kylie can hear them moving beneath her feet…

Well, that got their attention, Kylie thinks to herself as the stony reptiles turn and burrow into the muck in her direction. At least Sherwood isn't in immediate danger anymore.
"Ahhh, guys?... I could use a little help here," Kylie calls back down the tunnels. Using her stealth, she edges off to one side of the opening to the tunnels. Hopefully, this will confuse the creatures and prevent them from surrounding her initially, and also allow her friends to come help.
Casting a quick Blur on herself, Kylie draws her shortsword in her right hand and her best dagger in her left and prepares to battle the young lizards.
Well, that got their attention, Kylie thinks to herself as the stony reptiles turn and burrow into the muck in her direction. At least Sherwood isn't in immediate danger anymore.
"Ahhh, guys?... I could use a little help here," Kylie calls back down the tunnels. Using her stealth, she edges off to one side of the opening to the tunnels. Hopefully, this will confuse the creatures and prevent them from surrounding her initially, and also allow her friends to come help.
Casting a quick Blur on herself, Kylie draws her shortsword in her right hand and her best dagger in her left and prepares to battle the young lizards.

At almost the same time, Kylie calls back down the tunnel, requesting help. Concerned, Yusef queries the elven woodswoman. "Nariya? Are you okay? Did you finish the beast? It sounds like Kylie needs help."

With the advancing Rock Reptile slowed by its wounds, Nariya has the time to pull out a second spear from her Quiver of Ehlonna. Using the weapon, she thrusts it forward and jabs the monster. The lizard growls in pain once more but slowly keeps advancing.
Nariya stabs the reptile once more, this time inside its open mouth. The spear point drills through the roof of the beasts mouth and emerges out of the back of its head covered in goo. The lizard lets out one weaker roar and perishes.
Nariya lets the spear sag in her grip and tries to relax her muscles to relieve the strain of fighting in such an awkward position. Other things however seem to be inconsiderate of her desires for rest.

"I'm fine, but this hulking corpse of a reptile is blocking the passage now," Nariya replies. "Unless you think we can somehow move it out of the way, we aren't getting through."
Nariya will try to determine the liklihood that any one of them would be able to fit through whatever space remains around the now dead reptile. Next would be to determine if they would be able to actually move the body out of their way. Nariya isn't too optimistic at this point about either of those thoughts.

Nariya has slain a second Rock Reptile. The problem now is that it blocks the passageway! Fortunately, the battle took place near the four way intersection. With effort it would be possible to push the corpse down one of the adjacent tunnels, making it possible to bypass. Nariya begins to work on the task, using her spear for leverage.
Up ahead, Kylie has found Sherwood and he's unconscious, but not alone. Three smaller Rock Reptiles are advancing on the mage. Kylie hits them each with a Magic Missile and they scatter, diving into the refuse that covers the cavern floor. The reptiles move through the trash, much like sharks in water.
The half-elf stealthfully slinks off to one side to avoid being attacked by the young. The plan works and the young reptiles erupt from the trash where Kylie had been. While they are distracted, Kylie casts Blur on herself.
Homing in on their prey once more, the kids close in on Kylie, but her enchantment confuses them and they all fail to strike flesh. Kylie lashes out with her shortsword and hits one of the kids, but her dagger misses.
The kids close in once more and again fail to sink their teeth into the nimble half-elf. Kylie's dagger finds a target this time and the reptile hisses in pain.
All three dive into the refuse once more and are lost from sight. The cave grows strangely silent and long minutes pass without another attack. It seems the young have fled!
Nariya, Yusef, and Lilia finally reach the large cavern by now and still no sign of the young. Yusef sinks deeper into the trash than Kylie did. Best guess would place the trash at several feet deep.
Sherwood is reached and it does not appear that he is seriously injured. There is a nasty looking bump on his forehead. He'll come around with assistance and be a bit dazed at first. The last thing he remembered was being dragged along and then hitting his head.

Using a weapon in each hand, this is a fight like she's never experienced before. She doesn't like fighting hand-to-hand, and a trickle of fear slithers down her spine.
Kylie slashes and stabs to the best of her ability. She has some limited success, wounding one, and then another, while managing to avoid the creatures' attempts to bite her.
Though she fails to slay any of the stony lizards, they soon retreat. Kylie stands there for several long minutes, wary and breathing heavily from exertion. It appears they have gone.
As Yusef enters, Kylie moves toward Sherwood. "The young seem to have fled," she tells the others as she starts to inspect her pseudo-uncle. "I don't know where they've gone or whether they will return.
"We need to either get Sherwood out of here or return him to consciousness."
Grasping the mage's shoulder, she shakes it gently. "Sherwood! Are you okay?" she calls.

Yusef does his best to help Nariya pry and push the large lizard off into a side passage. In minutes, they are past, though Yusef is sweating heavily from the effort. "Well, that takes care of that," he says, to no one in particular.
Crawling on down the tunnel, he enters the larger cave where Kylie appears to be waiting warily. From the way she's standing and holding her weapons, his evaluation is that she is not hurt and that she successfully fought off whatever was here threatening Sherwood.
Stepping in, he sinks down nearly to his knees into the garbage that seems to comprise the floor here, causing him to yelp in surprise. He would hate to have to defend himself under these conditions.
As she moves to assist Sherwood, Kylie gives a brief summary of what happened here while they were detained. "So they were a mated pair, and you encountered their young in this room, Kylie? How many were there?"
He begins to slog his way over to Sherwood as Kylie begins her attempt to wake the mage. "Hold up there, Kylie. Please give me a chance to examine him. We don't want to exacerbate any injuries he may already have..." Moving close, Yusef examines Sherwood carefully to determine his condition.

All Lilia can do is listen as Nariya confronts the reptile in the tunnel. It sounds like mortal blows have been landed on the beast and it dies. But the trouble with these creatures is not over with yet as it now blocks the way! Even worse, Kylie is being attacked by more of these monsters behind it!
There is little Lilia can do given her position. Long minutes pass as she waits for Nariya and Yusef to clear the way. During this time, Lilia's Alter Self spell ends and she's suddenly back to her normal form. That makes transversing these tunnels a bit more difficult for the Elf Maiden.
Finally, the way is cleared and Lilia brings up the rear as we enter the large cavern where Kylie and Sherwood are at. Kylie has weapons drawn and blood can be seen on them, but the young half-elf does not seem injured herself.
Lilia doesn't really sink into the trash as much as everyone else. Strangely enough, her movements seem to be unaffected by the refuse.
"You have done well, Kylie. You've driven the beasts off. But to where?"

The last thing I remembered was being grabbed by something and being bounced off of the walls of a tunnel. It ate right through all my Stoneskins and then I hit my head on something. That's all I remember before waking up here. It looks like you've all had an adventure while I was sleeping."

Nariya simply lets out a huff at Yusef's words and proceeds into the cavern ahead.
As Yusef enters, Kylie moves toward Sherwood. "The young seem to have fled," she tells the others as she starts to inspect her pseudo-uncle. "I don't know where they've gone or whether they will return.
"Let's hope they don't have an extended family down here," Nariya says plainly.

You need to watch where you walk," Nariya says, her voice somewhere between sarcastic humor and that of a mother chiding her young son for wandering off in the woods alone. "We should get going as soon as you're able in case the kids, and possibly other extended family, return."

Yusef's words cause Kylie to reconsider her rash action. However, it seems he's too late as Sherwood appears to be regaining consciousness. Kylie rolls her eyes a bit, then offers up a more complete version of events. "We heard you shout behind us, and just got a glimpse of you disappearing into these hideously-narrow tunnels. After crawling around a bit, Nariya was able to find your trail, so we followed that as quickly as we could. I used a Wraithform to allow me to check the side tunnels for other dangers. We were soon set upon by a large, rocky lizard, which Nariya and Yusef soon defeated. A little further along, we encountered another adult of the species. I wafted past it and came on into this tunnel in search of you. When I entered, three smaller ones of the same creature - presumably their children - were preparing to eat you. Before anyone can object, Sherwood will add, "I'm still under the influence of the Polyself spell and can change form at will. Meaning that I'll be able to move much faster through the tunnels then you'll be able to too. Get going and I'll take a look around."
To demonstrate, Sherwood changes into a large snake and begins to slither into the trash. He'll try to find out where the kids went before following Yusef into the tunnel.
Sherwood listens as Nariya and Kylie relate what has transpired, while Yusef examines him.
"Yes mother", Sherwood responds with a grin using the same tone as Nariya. "I feel well enough to travel. "Judging by the amount of trash here, I'd say these creatures have been snatching the unsuspecting for a very long time. It’s a good thing this isn't a highly traveled road! At any rate, lets get out of here before reinforcements show up."Kylie rolls her eyes a bit, then offers up a more complete version of events. "We heard you shout behind us, and just got a glimpse of you disappearing into these hideously-narrow tunnels. After crawling around a bit, Nariya was able to find your trail, so we followed that as quickly as we could. I used a Wraithform to allow me to check the side tunnels for other dangers. We were soon set upon by a large, rocky lizard, which Nariya and Yusef soon defeated. A little further along, we encountered another adult of the species. I wafted past it and came on into this tunnel in search of you. When I entered, three smaller ones of the same creature - presumably their children - were preparing to eat you. Fortunately, I was able to drive them off. Assumable, the others killed the other adult."
"I'll be fine. In fact, the spell I am under has certain recuperative abilities when completed. I'm sure that I'll be healed very soon. In the meantime, lets start leaving. Nariya will lead the way so that we don't get lost on the way out. Lilia will go next and then Kylie. Yusef will follow and I'll bring up the rear.""Being conscious and being able to defend oneself, or for that matter, a whole group of people, are two drastically different things," Nariya responds impatiently. "I would consider we all should worry until we are free of these narrow, treacherous caves."
Before anyone can object, Sherwood will add, "I'm still under the influence of the Polyself spell and can change form at will. Meaning that I'll be able to move much faster through the tunnels then you'll be able to too. Get going and I'll take a look around."
To demonstrate, Sherwood changes into a large snake and begins to slither into the trash. He'll try to find out where the kids went before following Yusef into the tunnel.

Sherwood has been rescued from the Rock Reptiles. Except for a bump on the head, he's no worse for wear as Yusef will discover. The explorers remain on guard for the smaller reptiles, but they seem to have fled this cavern.
Nariya uses her spear to prod for them, but does not find them. On one of her prods, she does hear a loud clang as if her spear point struck something metallic down in the muck.

Tunnels exist in the muck from the reptiles recent passage. Following these, Sherwood finds an opening in the cavern floor. Another tunnel leads away and there are signs of recent passage. This is the way the kids fled, but there is no sign of them now. Surfacing once more, Sherwood slithers after Yusef and follows him in the tunnels.
The way out of the tunnel system is uneventful. Nariya unerringly leads the way to the surface. She startles Rat near the exit. It seems the halfling crawled into the tunnel to escape the notice of a large bird, but didn't go in too far.
Finally the group is back on the surface once more on the cliff side road. It is late in the afternoon and the sun has begun to set. Sherwood's Polyself spell expires shortly after he exits the tunnels. As he predicted, the magic heals the knot on his head.

Once they are all gathered outside, Kylie puts forth the question of what to do next. "So what now? There are still a few hours of daylight left, so we could probably make some more progress. On the other hand, there are still some tunnels back there that we didn't fully explore. We could either do that after a little rest, or wait until morning when we have a full complement of spells.
"Personally, I'm concerned about those young lizards. If we leave them alone, they could well grow up to prey on other travellers in the area. It's clear that they have been doing so for far too long already."

Travelling Ever Onward
Yusef:
Yusef ignores the squabbling of the elfish women. He is however, proud of Lilia for staying out of it so far.
Though he has seem some strange things already from the mage, Yusef is still momentarily stunned by Sherwood's transformation into a giant snake! He stares for several moments as the snake disappears into the refuse at their feet. Having nothing better to do, he turns and joins the exodus as instructed.
"Greeting's, friend Rat," Yusef says as they emerge from the tunnels. "I'm glad to see you looking hale and hearty."
"It matter not to me whether we resume now or in the morning. However I know it may make a bid difference to you wizards."

Kylie looks at Nariya a moment, her attitude vaguely offended. "We have defended ourselves quite competantly, and Sherwood is a mage of great skill and power. It would take something of far greater power than we have seen so far to put us in any real danger."
Nariya seems to be choosing her words carefully before she says, "It seems the point I was making has been missed." She debates saying something further, but Kylie seems much too young to get the wisdom she was trying to offer. 'never argue with wizards' my family always warned me, 'magic rots the brain and makes them arrogant.' she thinks before turning away.
"Yes mother", Sherwood responds with a grin using the same tone as Nariya. "I feel well enough to travel. I imagine that you elves are feeling very claustrophobic right now, so let us move out."
"You would be lucky to call me your mother," Nariya says through a wide smile. "Yes, it will be nice to get clear of these caves."
Striking the metal object with her spear, Nariya is only barely interested in what it might be. Having little use for a heavy and clumsy metal shield, helmet or armor that it probably was, she doesn't consider stopping to examine it.
Easily enough, they return to the surface and Nariya takes in the wilderness once more, glad to see the sky smiling upon them. However the mood is not meant to last.
"Personally, I'm concerned about those young lizards. If we leave them alone, they could well grow up to prey on other travellers in the area. It's clear that they have been doing so for far too long already."
"I agree," Yusef says. "These reptiles have been preying on innocent travellers for far too long. This cannot be allowed to continue. We should remove their threat to these roads.
"And what right do we have to wipe out more of the family then we already have?" Nariya says, spinning on her heel. "Sure they wallow in trash and were trying to feed their young," she says, dripping with sarcasm about just how horrible those two things really are, "but they are not inherently evil. The odds are now against the young that they will even survive to reach adulthood, but if they do, it will be because nature's course was played out, not our swords."
"I was not brought on as a guide for some young hunters that want to cut their teeth on a few denizens of the wilderness. We killed only because we needed to rescue Sherwood. That is done now and the reptiles have fled, so my part is finished. If you're going back, then I'll wait here until you decide you're done." Nariya will move away from the others and scan the terrain and horizon, looking for a good spot to make camp for the night.

Rat:
The Master Finder is content to remain hidden in the tunnel safe from the hungry predator that seemed to have a taste of halfling for dinner. So intent is he on keeping an eye on the sky, that the elfin trailblazer does sneak right up on him!
"AIGGGHHH!", Rat cries out after being prodded by Nariya. The halfling scrambles out of the tunnel as if denizens of the nether worlds themselves were on his heels! "Halfling devourers from the deeps of the Earth! Run for your lives!"
Out safely on the path, the Master Finder turns back to the tunnel opening and draws a dagger from his belt. Surprisingly, the dagger grows to the size of a short sword in the halfling's shaky hands!
"I have to warn you creature of the underworld, that this blade is the bane of your existence! Why, it was forged from the iron teeth of the mighty demon lord Humpapuff! Its touch alone will send you screaming back to the fiery pits of the Abyss!"
The bravely fearful look on Rat's childlike face softens considerably when Nariya crawls out into the daylight. His weapon shrinks back to the size of a dagger once more and is stored in his belt.
"Well, bless my house! It's you Miss Nariya! Returning safe from the tunnels if the mysterious mage grabbers! Did you find Sherwood? Are all of you safe?"
In quick order the rest of Rat's traveling companions emerge from the tunnel, including Sherwood who's taken the form of a sinister looking serpent!
"So, did you find anything interesting?"
Talk quickly turns to the horrible monsters the group faced while within the tunnels and how they seemed to have human mage on the menu! Rat will visibly shiver at their horrific description!
"Lucky for these monsters that my assistance wasn't needed. Why, I would have skinned the beasts for a new vest, I would!"

"Yes, friend Yusef, I am indeed hale and hearty, although I was greatly concerned about your fates! Indeed, I was very nearly ready to crawl in there and assist you in your most dangerous quest! Alas, you performed your task so splendidly that I did not have to come to rescue you! Congratulations!""Greeting's, friend Rat," Yusef says as they emerge from the tunnels. "I'm glad to see you looking hale and hearty."
"So, did you find anything interesting?"

The Elf Maiden remains on guard while in the large cavern, but is more than eager to depart this place. The idea of something overhead and not being able to see the sky or feel the breeze on her face is at troubling one. How can anyone live like this?
"I agree, let us depart these suffocating caves post haste!"
Storing her short sword, Lilia will follow Nariya into the tunnel. Panic begins to grow more or more on her face until finally the outside is reached! Moving away from the tunnel, Lilia will lean against a rock and try to regain her composure.
"I pray to Father Larethian to never have to endure anything like that again!"
Talk turns towards what course of action to take next.
"I am all for continuing on and away from these accursed tunnels! I have no desire to go back in there to hunt for treasure or to slay the remaining beasts. Let us continue on our mission to find this missing elf."

After satisfying his curiosity, Sherwood in the form of a serpent slithers after Yusef and the others. Travel through these tunnels is much easier in this mode. It would be difficult in his full human size. Once outdoors talk turns on what to do about the lizards.
Sherwood listens intently as both Kylie and Yusef make the case for slaying the remaining lizards, while Nariya simply wants to let them be. The ranger/mage considers for a few moments before speaking.
"You all raise very good points. Were this road closer to civilized lands I would be more inclined to agree that these creatures need to be eliminated. We are traveling on a road that probably very few in the kingdom even know exists. Do not forget what we went through to even get here, traveling up the dead end valley and passing through the illusionary wall to even find this road. Any travelers who pass by on this road are not your typical citizens of the kingdom."

However, there is one place that I would like to return to that I saw earlier, and I doubt I'll run into any of the little beasties on the way." Maybe she can still gain something from this experience.
Kylie turns to Yusef and Rat, as she doesn't feel like she can count on the other two right now. "Would you two be willing to wait at the opening and come help if I get in trouble?"
If they agree, Kylie will lie down in the tunnel, then cast Fly on herself. This should allow her to move quickly and quietly through the tunnels. Her goal is to reach the first nest she found but was unable to explore because her Wraithform spell was in effect at the time. Kylie will be prepared to cast her remaining Magic Missile if needed.

Kylie is a little shocked that Nariya, and perhaps even Sherwood, is willing to sacrifice peoples' lives to feed these beasts. "I really hope that you're right that other people won't come this way. Clearly, these creatures have been feeding on something, or they would have either starved or moved away. If they agree, Kylie will lie down in the tunnel, then cast Fly on herself. This should allow her to move quickly and quietly through the tunnels. Her goal is to reach the first nest she found but was unable to explore because her Wraithform spell was in effect at the time. Kylie will be prepared to cast her remaining Magic Missile if needed.

Yusef listens to the rest of the debate regarding routing out the rest of the lizards. The opinions appear to be heavily divided, and strongly-felt on both sides.
"I can understand Kylie's concerns, but also Nariya's reluctance. Like Kylie, I don't know what lies on the path ahead, but if you are certain that other travellers won't fall prey to these reptiles, Sherwood, then I will take your word for that."

Yusef smiles. He can see the glow of avarice in the young woman's eyes. "I would be happy to assist you in this way. Once you're done, we can join the others at the camp site they pick out. "Would you two be willing to wait at the opening and come help if I get in trouble?"

"Well, bless my house! It's you Miss Nariya! Returning safe from the tunnels if the mysterious mage grabbers! Did you find Sherwood? Are all of you safe?"
Nariya chuckles at the halfing, surprised to have startled him so. Obviously he forgot we were in there, or possibly something else distracted him. "All is fine now, thank you for putting away that marvelous weapon. Were I truly a demon, I would be tempted to quake in my boots."
"We found Sherwood, a little bruised and battered, but no worse for wear," Nariya tells Rat, "and all of us are safe."
"You all raise very good points. Were this road closer to civilized lands I would be more inclined to agree that these creatures need to be eliminated. We are traveling on a road that probably very few in the kingdom even know exists. Do not forget what we went through to even get here, traveling up the dead end valley and passing through the illusionary wall to even find this road. Any travelers who pass by on this road are not your typical citizens of the kingdom."
"From what you tell me, Nariya does seem correct in that these creatures were just animals doing what they had to survive. There was no malice involved here. They were just trying to feed their young. In my opinion, we should just leave them alone and continue on."
Sherwood does a good job of settling the situation, allowing Nariya to cool off some. She knows her stance is peculiar for anyone who lives in crowded cities, becoming too tame to survive in the harsh wilderness. All of nature's beasts have to struggle to survive whenever man builds new roads or towns in their homes. Man, of course, always seems to fail to see that side of it.
Still, it seems most of the others are going back to the cave, seemingly for reasons of greed, another grossly human trait. whatever, she thinks to herself, if they find something useful from the corpse of someone who was foolish maybe it'll placate them
She busies her time scouting out the area in all directions, looking for a suitable place to camp. In case they move on for a short while after exploring the cavern, she will look for places a little distance away. She will still remain in view, or at least earshot, should something go awry.

These rock reptiles could very well be keeping the populations of other monsters in check. These animals could actually be doing a service for us."
Once Kylie is within the caves, Sherwood will sit down on the mountain road and fish through his Bag of Holding. Finally, he'll pull out Crystal Ball and set it on his crossed legs. "Let's make sure she doesn't get in over her head. Lilia, would you assist me please?"
Sherwood concentrates and invokes the magic of the ball. The clear crystal becomes all dark.
"Lilia, I'll need your eyes to keep track of Kylie since you can see in the dark and I cannot."
Assuming that Kylie's mission is carried out without incident, Sherwood will store his Crystal Ball right before she's ready to emerge from the caves.
That over with, the group will continue onwards until Nariya finds a good place to camp. If the campground is large enough, Sherwood will cast his Hidden Lodge for protection.
"Oh, I make no claim that I absolutely know for sure that no one will ever come this way. I am fairly confident that anyone who does pass by won't be someone without skill. Don't forget we crossed a gorge to reach this spot. I doubt that we'll find any great hidden cities up in these mountains. They were heavily explored during the early days of the Kingdom and such a thing would have turned up in our records.
