New Frontiers #53

Reinforcements have arrived at the Vesubian Gatehouse, along with two more Corunglain defenders in the form of the ranger Rathlar and the dwarven warrioress Aria Stonehand. Introductions are made and stories are exchanged. A plan to attack the two entry points the humanoids use to enter the city is finalized.

Rathlar will pause, as if in deep thought, when he hears the name Opikus.

"That name is known to me", he will state. "I've heard tales of a mage by that name from a distant land who settled far to the northwest in the Broken Lands. It is said that he dwells in a placed called the Valley of Fire. Fire Giants are also believed to live in the area. There has never been any trouble with this Opikus before."

Grondar wrote:"Pebbles, a fine name, that," Grondar says with a grin. "I would be happy to tell you if you would care to walk with me." Taking Pebbles reigns, he leads the mule toward the stables.

"Some weeks ago now, Lord Sherwood recruited me to join a band of adventurers he and Lord Validar over there," he gestures, "were assembling. With the church's blessing, I agreed and made the trip to Pyris where we all met. We have been travelling and fighting pretty much ever since.

"And you, milady?"

"I've been carrying on with the family tradition," Aria says. "There have been numerous warriors of renown in my bloodline and I'm trying to live up to that. I've spent the last year here in Corunglain helping defend the city against humanoid attacks. When finished here, my aim to relocate some of the lost dwarven cities in this region."

Dusk is sent to deliver a message to Arocken at the West Gatehouse, followed later on by Sherra. Lord Corley, Arocken and Sherra return to the Vesubian Gatehouse, while fifty soldiers go to reinforce the West Gatehouse. Instructions on the location of the second humanoid entry point are passed on to Drakkimor and his band.

The Guardians set forth to the warehouse Valena suspects as being one of the entry points into the city. The streets of Corunglain are strangely quiet this morning and everything is covered in snow. There is no sign of anyone out in the streets and no tracks are found in the snow.

Valena and Rathlar lead the group to the south and east of the Vesubian Gatehouse. They avoid the main streets and the group trudges through the snow.

As you get closer to the target, the group starts to pass through warehouses. You find each warehouse to be deserted, but it appears that numerous creatures have been here recently. Most of the warehouses have been emptied of their goods and there are sings of broken crates and damaged goods here and there.

It remains suspiciously quiet even as you pass through the warehouse directly next to the target one. Scouts are sent out for reconnaissance and each return with similar reports.

The outside of the warehouse in question is deserted and there are not even tracks in the snow. Apparently the goblinoids have yet to venture back out into the city! Each, however, believes that there are a few enemy troops inside the warehouse.

The Guardians split up and prepare to move in. Sniper positions are not taken as there's not anything to shoot at. The warehouse doors are thrown open and the group advances inside.

Unlike the other warehouses, this one is brimming with cartons, crates and other forms of cargo. Some goblins are quickly found and easily dealt with. Rathlar's wolves go forth and locate a few of the cowardly creatures hiding amongst the stored goods. There were about a dozen goblins in all.

Near the center of the warehouse you find a gigantic tunnel opening in the floor. It angles downward into the depths of the earth and is large enough for open wagons to traverse, which numerous tracks in the area will indicate has happened. Three such wagons sit near the opening and are only partially loaded up with cargo.

The tunnel itself is wide and seems stable. Lit torches provide luminance about every thirty feet or so along the way. You can't see the end of the tunnel and no creatures are currently in it. It slopes downward at about a thirty degree angle.

GM Notes:

A little bit of an extended post to keep things moving along. The opposition inside the warehouse was rather insignificant given the strength of the party and I didn't see any reason draw things out. I do assume that no one was wounded and that no spells were cast. Corley's earlier damaged was healed during the battle. Some goblins could have been captured if you so desire.

It's clear that most of the humanoids retreated down the tunnel, probably to escape the snow and cold. They've been looting the nearby warehouses, bringing goods to this warehouse and then transporting them down the tunnel.

Ready for an expedition into the depths of the earth?

Extra Note: I didn't notice Validar's last post until I closed the previous post, so the above wasn't written taking that into consideration. About the only significant thing that could be added by Rathlar, is that the Duke's Castellan a Lord Callaman is probably currently in charge of the fortress.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Battle for Corunglain

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:

Validar relates the details of the information provided by Crysania while they were at the West Gatehouse. Grondar frowns unattractively as he listens, not liking the sound of the confluence of forces against which they are poised. This is indeed a grave battle, and one that could well determine the fate of this region for decades to come.

"Mages and Hextorites," he growls angrily, his voice sounding like rocks grinding together. "We must throw them back before they can work their evil here. I suspect this battle will test us far more than even the struggle against that Corruptor we just defeated."
Aria wrote:"I've been carrying on with the family tradition," Aria says. "There have been numerous warriors of renown in my bloodline and I'm trying to live up to that. I've spent the last year here in Corunglain helping defend the city against humanoid attacks. When finished here, my aim to relocate some of the lost dwarven cities in this region."
"Really?", Grondar asks, more in surprise than disbelief. "Mayhap we can be of help to one another, then. While in Rennydale recently, I encountered an ancient named Kromag who spoke of a dwarven town that he had grown up in called Thunderdelve. None of the others there had heard of such a place, but he claimed it had been overrun by humanoids when he was young. He gave me some simple instructions to get there, and I promised him I would attempt to find it and reclaim it for our people. Apparently it is in the same general area as Krypthome, which needs to be cleared of those vermin as well." As he speaks, he gets Pebbles situation in the stables and returns to the larger group.

It is not long before they set out for the warehouse that Valena told them of. Strangely, none of the goblinoids infesting the city appear to be around. Even many of the warehouses in the area are empty.

Entering the warehouse believed to contain the tunnel entrance, they find a few goblins, who are quickly subdued. The place is piled high with crates and tracks indicate that much has been moved down the tunnel in wagons. The gaping mouth of the tunnel beckons.

Turning to Validar, Grondar says, "Well, it seems we have further yet to travel. We could simply close the tunnel, but that would bring us no closer to locating the missing nobles of Corunglain. I recommend that we proceed through the tunnel to wherever it may lead."
_______________________________________________________
Validar: I assumed that when it was written that stories were exchanged that everyone who was present heard all these details. Now it is possible that Grondar was not present and Aria and Rathlar both came after this would have been told, but they did not mention anything about contacting superiors, so it wouldn't have been brought up as yet.
Please note that Grondar certainly doesn't have an eidetic memory, either. Being mortal (if not exactly human), he is more than capable of forgetting something from time to time (like myself!). It always seems a little strange to me when characters never-ever forget anything.

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:
"When Sherra is ready, she will head to the Western Gatehouse to inform Drakkimor and his group of our plans and give them the location of the other warehouse. If we can coordinate our attacks it should throw the humanoids into chaos and severely weaken their morale. Then Lord CorleyArocken and Sherra can return here, while the soliders move out to reinforce that Gatehouse."
After not being seen for most of the night, except for whenever she was need to take a watch schedule, Sherra appears and notes what Validar needs her to do. She merely nods, not her normal jovial self, but hangs around to meet the newcomers and listen to the telling of Validar's tale as he fills in anything Lyonessa might have missed. After that, she takes off for the Western Gatehouse, clearly eager to be out of the confines of the gatehouse.
"Good morning to you, Lord Corley and Arocken," Sherra will say, visibly improved in mood, although neither of them would have been around to have noticed, after being able to stretch her legs even with the threat of enemies lurking everywhere. Still, she didn't seem to spot anyone on her way over. Sherra quickly confirms that Dusk did arrive and then lets them in on the rest of the plan. Within a small amount of time they are underway once more.

As the group moves out to the warehouses, there is a further lack of resistance. It appears all the goblinoids have sought shelter from the snow. Decisions are made to not bother with sniper positions and everyone moves in, finding nothing of importance until finally one warehouse is located that reveals a huge tunnel burrowing into the very earth.
Turning to Validar, Grondar says, "Well, it seems we have further yet to travel. We could simply close the tunnel, but that would bring us no closer to locating the missing nobles of Corunglain. I recommend that we proceed through the tunnel to wherever it may lead."
<"I'm thinking you're just wanting to show off now,"> Sherra will say in dwarvish to Grondar, smiling at him playfully. <"Getting tired of the surface world aren't you?">

Laucian

Trudging through the snow behind Rathler and Valena, Laucian nocks an arrow to his bow and scans the surrounding town from the column. No sign of any humanoids can be seen except for the crates and litter that they caused in their plundering.

Seeing the the building undefended or any signs of recent activity sniper positions are not needed and they head for the very doors of the rumored warehouse.

Before entering the doors Laucian will make it known to some of the others, mainly Validar and Acerion. "There are guards within. Perhaps we should take one or two to question?"

Drawing his sword before the doors are thrown open, they enter among the towering boxes and crates only to find a few goblins cowering about the crevices.

Moving about the crates, Laucian cautiously steps forward. A glint of sunlight catches his attention off to his right. Moving swiftly he blocks a dagger swipe from his right. Catching the goblin off guard he soon disarms the humanoid and rests his sword tip at the goblin's throat. He will speak in Orc to the new captive. "It would seem your friends disserted you. "Edging his blade to indicate to move back the way Laucian came, "Come, son of a gnome, let us join my comrades."

As he leads him back, the gaping hole within the earth becomes more apparent and the elf has the goblin drop to its knees, resting his sword at its neck. He will await the others as well as any other captives that may be brought forth then begin questioning. (leaving it off there for now)

--Questions he will ask
-Where does the tunnel lead?
-Why did they retreat?
-How many of their number?
-How long ago did they retreat?

At the first sound or sight of any humaniod force he will kill those at his feet outright.

Lyonessa:

Dusk returns and lets her know that he relayed the message and that he spotted Sherra arriving before he left to return here. Lyonessa is pleased and praises her familiar, also thankful to know that Sherra made it safely. Lyonessa will tell the others the news.

The Guardians set forth to the warehouse Valena suspects as being one of the entry points into the city. The streets of Corunglain are strangely quiet this morning and everything is covered in snow. There is no sign of anyone out in the streets and no tracks are found in the snow.

It is determined that Lyonessa will stay with the archers. She keeps her borrowed wand handy and is prepared to use her few ranged spells if neccessary. It all turns out to be of no worry however, for no foes appear, except for a handful of goblins they pounce on in one of the warehouses.

As questions are being asked of the goblins, Lyonessa looks down the large tunnel, suppressing a shiver. She hasn't had any real experience going underground and isn't sure what to think of the possibility that she might be doing just that very soon.

As the warehouse is secured the large hole in the earth is plain to be seen. "This is going to be quite difficult." (as if it hasnt been already!!!) Noticing no humaniods within sight and the crates looming nearby. Chareos will edge closer to the crates and begin looking within (random) them to see what their contents are.

He will ask Rathler," Would you be able to ask your wolves to inspect some of the crates or would the humaniods' scent be too strong for them to determine contents? I do not care for this much; there was no reason for them to retreat," he will say calmly.

Lord Validar -

Rathlar will pause, as if in deep thought, when he hears the name Opikus.

"That name is known to me", he will state. "I've heard tales of a mage by that name from a distant land who settled far to the northwest in the Broken Lands. It is said that he dwells in a placed called the Valley of Fire. Fire Giants are also believed to live in the area. There has never been any trouble with this Opikus before."

"That makes perfect sense. The humanoids are predominantly from the Broken Lands and the brought Fire Giants with them in this attack. He may not have been trouble here before, but that seems to have changed now."

"I would expect that to be the case as well, my dwarven friend. It seems that there are many foes cooperating to threaten our lands. But we shall oppose them and defeat them, regardless of what we face. Of that I am certain."

The next morning, there is little resistace to their 'attack'. The warehouse is entered and a tunnel into the depths of the earth is found.

Validar considers for a moment as the area is inspected and Laucian interrogates a captured goblin.

Turning to Validar, Grondar says, "Well, it seems we have further yet to travel. We could simply close the tunnel, but that would bring us no closer to locating the missing nobles of Corunglain. I recommend that we proceed through the tunnel to wherever it may lead."

"As do I, Grondar. It also would not defeat the enemy. We do not know if there are more than two of these tunnels at the moment. I suggest we take the fight to the enemy." Lord Validar eyes the wagons near the tunnel. He listens to hear the answers from the goblin which Laucian is interrogating.

(Validar's question: What does it appear that the humanoids used to pull the wagons? Are they hitched up already or just hitch-less wagons awaiting transport?)

Please note that Grondar certainly doesn't have an eidetic memory, either. Being mortal (if not exactly human), he is more than capable of forgetting something from time to time (like myself!). It always seems a little strange to me when characters never-ever forget anything.

I agree with that, although in games terms (and it is a little unclear now since it was referred to both as previous night and that morning by different people) the conversation just happened. So those who were there certainly would have remembered it. Unfortunatley in a game like this assumptions are often made and you just have to make the best of what is written.

Argent:

Argent listens quietly as the full situation is explained to them.
Grondar wrote:"Mages and Hextorites," he growls angrily, his voice sounding like rocks grinding together. "We must throw them back before they can work their evil here. I suspect this battle will test us far more than even the struggle against that Corruptor we just defeated."
"A combination that I've encountered before back at Karn's Keep. Having Hextorites this far away from the Keln lands is not a good thing. Battling enemy mages is never fun."

"But the chance to acquire new spells and magic items is!", Argent thinks excitedly to herself.

Next morning, Argent trudges forth with the others to the warehouse the elfin woman has indicated as the way the enemy managed to get inside the city. She has her bulky fur overcoat on with the hood up. (Argent will cast her Strength spell before hand to make things a bit easier for her.)

However, the orcs seem to have abandoned the warehouse, leaving only some goblins behind and they are easily overwhelmed. A few stragglers are rounded up by Rathlar's wolves. Cute and useful pets!

As Laucian begins interrogating the goblin captive(s), Grondar stands nearby, listening carefully to any replies. Anything they can learn regarding what awaits them further along can only help.

Not being particularly found of Orcs, Argent pays little heed to the interrogations. It appears that the journey now leads down into the earth. Argent finds herself standing near the tunnel entrance with Lyonessa.

"This will be a new experience. Hopefully the trip will be worth our while."

Argent will head down the tunnel when directed.

Lord Corley

Post by Corley »

Corley:

The long night at the West Gatehouse passes slowly for the young noble. The sudden snow storm ensures that no more enemy attacks will come this night and Corley sets up a light guard rotation for the night and tries to get some rest. Surely his strength will be needed come the morning!

The weather is noticeably nicer come the dawn. First Lady Lyonessa's new friend, the owl Dusk, arrives and somehow Arocken can converse with the bird! Not long after that another familiar face arrives.
Sherra wrote:"Good morning to you, Lord Corley and Arocken," Sherra will say, visibly improved in mood, although neither of them would have been around to have noticed, after being able to stretch her legs even with the threat of enemies lurking everywhere. Still, she didn't seem to spot anyone on her way over. Sherra quickly confirms that Dusk did arrive and then lets them in on the rest of the plan. Within a small amount of time they are underway once more.
"You are a sight for sore eyes, milady!", Corley will say energetically. "I trust you have vital information to impart?"

Lord Corley is brought up to speed on the latest news, including the arrival of reinforcements. This is passed on to the commander of the West Gate forces.

"Continue to hold this position. I am sure that we shall return shortly."

Mounting up, Lord Corley will lead Arocken and Sherra back to the Vesubian Gatehouse. Corley will offer Sherra a ride back on his warhorse since it appears that she walked here.

"Join me, milady. There is no need to walk back when Destrier has room for another."

Once back at the Vesubian Gatehouse, Lord Corley will greet his companions and introduce himself to the defenders of Corunglain. Seeing the elfin and dwarven ladies present, Lord Corley holds back on his usual tradition of kissing of hands. He recalls Lady Lilia's cold reaction to his greeting and has no idea if such a thing is acceptable to the lady dwarf. Better to simply refrain than to make an offense.

Not long after that, we're on the move once more led through the deserted streets of Corunglain by the rangers Lady Valena and Rathlar. Alas, the vermin infesting this town have chosen to stay indoors rather than brave the elements.

"Typical of the vermin. Only fight when they hold a position of strength on the field of battle."

Surprisingly, the warehouse the elfin ranger indicates is seemingly deserted. Only a few goblins were left behind serving as an inadequate guard force. But it appears that much looting has taken place and that goods are being transported down into the earth.

"Add my voice to those in agreement, Lord Validar. Aye, let us strike back at these cowardly dogs deep in their underground lair! Let the curs know what it is like to be on the defensive for a change!"

While the goblin is being interrogated, an idea comes to Lord Corley and he seeks out Lord Validar.

"We may be able to use these wagons of ill-gotten goods to our advantage, my friend. Depending on how long this tunnel is, there may be more guards along the way until we come across the main invasion force. Let us send a few of these loaded wagons down the tunnel as a greeting. The confusion that would ensue could be used to our advantage."

Aria:

"Really?", Grondar asks, more in surprise than disbelief. "Mayhap we can be of help to one another, then. While in Rennydale recently, I encountered an ancient named Kromag who spoke of a dwarven town that he had grown up in called Thunderdelve. None of the others there had heard of such a place, but he claimed it had been overrun by humanoids when he was young. Apparently it is in the same general area as Krypthome, which needs to be cleared of those vermin as well." As he speaks, he gets Pebbles situation in the stables and returns to the larger group.

"Such was the fate of many of our settlements in this area," Aria says. "None of these places were as large as even Kurdal or Ferryway. (Dwarven towns in Rockhome. Populations of 2000 or less.) In fact most were simply small communities and even single clan towns. There are several dozen of these small villages and mines throughout the Silver Sierras. All of these dwarven holdings should be cleansed of the rats that infest them. I am open to assistance in this task."

The battle at the warehouse was much easier than anticipated. Only a dozen or so goblins were found and they were quickly overwhelmed. A few were captured and are being questioned by Laucian.

The goblins are easily cowed and eye Rathlar's wolves with frightened eyes. They answer quickly.

Where does the tunnel lead?

The tunnel leads down to a giant cavern. It serves as the main staging area for the invasion force.

Why did they retreat?

They didn't retreat. They returned to their camp to celebrate their victory over the humans. It's much warmer down there than here on the surface.

How many of their number?

Over a thousand goblins.

How long ago did they retreat?

Late last night once the snow started to fall.

Chareos will edge closer to the crates and begin looking within (random) them to see what their contents are.
One crate holds, now mostly broken, ceramic pottery. Another holds a short swords. The contents seem to be mundane household supplies and weapons. Both are among the more common types of goods available in Corunglain.

Chareos wrote:He will ask Rathlar," Would you be able to ask your wolves to inspect some of the crates or would the humanoids' scent be too strong for them to determine contents? I do not care for this much; there was no reason for them to retreat," he will say calmly.
Rathlar will shrug. "Depends what you are looking for. I had them search for any enemies and the goblins were all that they found."

Validar's question: What does it appear that the humanoids used to pull the wagons? Are they hitched up already or just hitch-less wagons awaiting transport?

Pack lizards were brought up from the caves below to pull the wagons back down the tunnel. Supplies used by the invasion force were brought up with the pack lizards and Corunglain cargo was taken down on the return trip.

Grondar gives a long low whistle. "I had not realized that there were so many. It will take some time to clear them all. Once we have finished our work here in Corunglain, it would be my great pleasure to provide you any assistance that I may."
Validar wrote:"I would expect that to be the case as well, my dwarven friend. It seems that there are many foes cooperating to threaten our lands. But we shall oppose them and defeat them, regardless of what we face. Of that I am certain."

Argent wrote:"A combination that I've encountered before back at Karn's Keep. Having Hextorites this far away from the Keln lands is not a good thing. Battling enemy mages is never fun."

"I am glad to hear that we are in agreement, my friends. There is much yet to be done, and our path appears to lead in this direction."

It doesn't surprise Grondar at all that the goblinoids have set up their camp here under the earth. Those races have long tended to dwell beneath the ground, partly due to their sensitivity to full sunlight. Still, a thousand is a substantial number; they will have to be clever to destroy or drive away so many.

Sherra:
Mounting up, Lord Corley will lead Arocken and Sherra back to the Vesubian Gatehouse. Corley will offer Sherra a ride back on his warhorse since it appears that she walked here.

"Join me, milady. There is no need to walk back when Destrier has room for another."
"Why, thank you," Sherra will say, taking Corley's offer and joining him on Destrier. "The trek here was invigorating and much needed, but a bit of rest before we head out again will be most welcome."

Grondar looks puzzled for just a moment, then a chuckle burbles up from his abdomen. <"Why yes, that must be it. All that sun and blue sky is almost more than I can bear. Perhaps I will even allow you to witness my incredible dwarven earth magic...">
Completely deadpan, Sherra replies, <"I think you should save that magic of yours for the dwarven ladies."> Undoubtably, Grondar is going to look at her, and Sherra will maintain the straight face for as long as she can. Eventually though, a smile will start to break free until she can not contain it anymore, and will enjoy a moment of laughter with her dwarven friend.

Eventually the answers the captured goblins provided are shared with everyone, and the sheer amount of forces gathered somewhere in the tunnels is staggering. Sherra however, has her doubts. "Over a thousand, really? Are we sure any of them can count that high?" she will ask pointing to the wretched goblins cowering from the wolves. "If that number is true, we're going to need more arrows," Sherra will say, looking at Laucian.

Into the depths...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

"Mages and Hextorites," he growls angrily, his voice sounding like rocks grinding together. "We must throw them back before they can work their evil here. I suspect this battle will test us far more than even the struggle against that Corruptor we just defeated."

"A combination that I've encountered before back at Karn's Keep. Having Hextorites this far away from the Keln lands is not a good thing. Battling enemy mages is never fun."

"It is clear that the Hextorites and perhaps Keln herself are attempting to attack where they are not expected. The attack on Gateway was similar in combatants: humanoids made up the bulk of the enemy. And with Gateway they introduced a foul potion that weakened the defenders into the city's water supply. Now they threaten the Western lands of Cynalon. They shall be defeated once more."

"Yes, Hextor's minions have travelled far. It is time to teach them that they are not wanted here," Grondar growls.

"Indeed!"

"Add my voice to those in agreement, Lord Validar. Aye, let us strike back at these cowardly dogs deep in their underground lair! Let the curs know what it is like to be on the defensive for a change!"

"My thought exactly, my friend. They should be unprepared for defense and a unexpected attack. We should be able to do much damage to their forces and their morale with a sufficient strike."

"Indeed, your thoughts mirror my own, Lord Corley. Let us see if there are any kegs of oil or alcohol that we can use to alight the wagons. That should help to cause an even bigger commotion when they arrive at the guard locations."

"I am glad to hear that we are in agreement, my friends. There is much yet to be done, and our path appears to lead in this direction."

"Yes, we should prepare to attack. Argent and anyone else with flight perhaps should prepare their spells. Mobility is always an asset. We will light the wagons and send down two of them together, followed closer by the third, so as to try and surprise the guards and perhaps even remove them completely."

"We will send the scouts down next in an attempt to locate any enemies, while the remainder of the group advances in two groups. These groups will be close together relatively."

"The scouts are our most nimble and stealthy of the group and will advance some distance ahead of the rest. Group One are the main line fighters and Group Two are generally more mobile or ranged combatants."

"I would not be surprised, Sherra. The group attacking Gateway numbered well over 3000 goblins. The Seekers were able to attack them, surprise them and ultimately route them from the battlefield. Prepared as we are and with the firepower of our mages at the ready, I would think that 1000 goblins would hardly prove a suitable diversion. Likely we can route them with much less of their number actuallt engaged."

Laucian

Laucian listens intently to what the frightened humanoids speak. Still he wonders about the truth in their words and eyes them with great skepticism and disdain.

After reciting what is found to the others, Laucian will say his peace, "If what they say is true then we will have the fight of our lives before us. Over a thousand could mean any number of humanoids, let alone pets or creatures under their control." After pausing a moment he will say, "I would not trust these wretchs' filthy twisted words as far as I could throw them...... After all How many underlings would know the exact amount of the army they are marching with?"

"What shall we do with them; we can't let them to just go free," he will ask Validar.

"That is yet to be seen, Sherra. I would not worry about having enough arrows in the coming battle. Our sight will most likely be limited as will be our range. This battle will most likely be won by strength of arms and one's will; not by the skill of our archers," the ranger replies unemotionally.

"The scouts are our most nimble and stealthy of the group and will advance some distance ahead of the rest. Group One are the main line fighters and Group Two are generally more mobile or ranged combatants."
"We will hold our ground as best we can till your arrival Validar. Though if we encounter hostiles, and I'm sure we shall, we will need to form a fighting line so our archers/ mages can cause havoc within the ranks."

Chareos
One crate holds, now mostly broken, ceramic pottery. Another holds a short swords. The contents seem to be mundane household supplies and weapons. Both are among the more common types of goods available in Corunglain.
Picking up the ceramic pottery, Chareos frowns as he looks at the now ruined pottery. The next crate he discovers full of shortswords. Taking one for himself he will say, "This may come in handy," as he stashes it in his belt.
Rathlar will shrug. "Depends what you are looking for. I had them search for any enemies and the goblins were all that they found."
"Then it would seem your wolves completed their part, Rathlar."
"If that number is true, we're going to need more arrows," Sherra will say, looking at Laucian.
Overhearing the raven-haired thief he will add, "Perhaps there are more within these crates. I found a crate full of short swords, there may be arrows as well."

Having been given his role Chareos will ready himself for the coming battle. When the time comes to move out the mage will approach, staff in hand, just to see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Lord Corley is greatly pleased when Lord Validar agrees with his plan on using the wagons to soften up the enemy. To that end, he'll begin to search for flammable cargo to be placed on the wagons.

Ivy:

The Priestess is thankful that the battle at the warehouse was quickly resolved. She takes a guard position as the goblins are questioned and doesn't really have anything to add to the general discussion.

However, when the plan with the wagons is brought up, Ivy will say, "I do have another Silence spell in memory. It could be used to mask the noise made by one of the wagons as it travels down the tunnel."

Valena:

Valena isn't completely surprised that the streets are deserted on this cold morning. Truth be told, she'd rather be by a warm fire herself, or, even better yet, back home in the Elfholds where such extreme temperatures are unknown.

She is puzzled when the warehouse is mostly deserted. It seems the creatures have been raiding the neighboring warehouses for goods and transporting them down in the depths of the earth. That must have been part of what she saw earlier. Troops going back and forth and cargo being brought in.

The elfin ranger will look down the dark tunnel and find that it extends beyond her sight. She inadvertently shivers as, like most elves, she finds the idea of being underground deplorable. That is the realm of dwarves and gnomes.

Val will thank Rathlar's wolves for their fine job in rooting up more goblins. She'll hold them and pet their fur briefly and then let them scare the goblins into talking.

"That we will," Valena will add. "And every shot will have to count. Perhaps we should use a fourth wagon to bring additional supplies down with us, such as more arrows. The wagon could even be flipped over to block the passage and give us archers a position to fire from."

Aria:
Grondar gives a long low whistle. "I had not realized that there were so many. It will take some time to clear them all. Once we have finished our work here in Corunglain, it would be my great pleasure to provide you any assistance that I may."
"The mountains in this area are not as rich in minerals and metals as those of our homeland. It is only natural that any settlements here be smaller than in Rockhome. Save for the legendary Gloryhole Mine, of course."

Validar wrote:"Indeed, your thoughts mirror my own, Lord Corley. Let us see if there are any kegs of oil or alcohol that we can use to alight the wagons. That should help to cause an even bigger commotion when they arrive at the guard locations."

"While I do not disagree with your ideas," Aria will say speaking up, "I think that you are all overlooking something. You're assuming that this tunnel leads straight to the cavern the goblins spoke of. More than likely there may be turns and side passages along the way. Simply put, we have no way of knowing if the wagon will even reach its intended target. They might hit a wall, or crash into a wall at a turn. Or even flip over on unsteady terrain. All of which would defeat the purpose of what you are trying to do."

"I think it would be best to have the scouts explore ahead before launching the wagons. Make sure they are going to reach a worthwhile target first."

Lyonessa:

Not being particularly found of Orcs, Argent pays little heed to the interrogations. It appears that the journey now leads down into the earth. Argent finds herself standing near the tunnel entrance with Lyonessa.

"This will be a new experience. Hopefully the trip will be worth our while."

"Not a particular trip I'm overly looking forward to," Lyonessa will reveal, staring down into the looming darkness. "Although from what I'm hearing from the others, it sounds like we will be going," she replies after pausing a few moments to listen to Validar and the others discussing plans.

Turning to face Argent she will admit, "Still it will be better to take the fight to them. These people have suffered enough at the ravages of their invaders."

Attack plans...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Corley - "It is a most cunning stratagem. If the threat here in the Northwest portion of the Kingdom succeeds, then more of our armies will be sent here to counter it. The defense of places such as Gateway will be lessened, making them more vulnerable to another attack. They seek to spread our armies too thin so that we will be unable to protect any of our borders. Such a plan must not be allowed to succeed!"

"It is a matter of hitting where least expected and then hitting again when reinforcements are pulled away. It is a tactic I like to use quite often; much more effective than a single-pronged attack in most cases."

"Gateway already had relaxed their defenses some while I was there and I am sure that with the talk of invasion planned, another attack would not be expected. Even more so now that the Crown has called off the invasion plans against Keln. I am not certain that troops from Gateway will be pulled here, but certainly attacks from multiple areas does bode ill for Cynalon. Nor does the fact that they are not regrouping in Keln, but rather making strides against us here."

"A thousand goblins is nothing to underestimate surely, but it shall certainly not be the fight of our lives. As I mentioned before, the Seekers drove off in excess of three thousand goblins from the field at Gateway, albeit with some assistance, but that group is certainly no more powerful than this one is."

"With planning and strong hearts, we can easily carry this day, my elven friend. As for their words, should they be exaggerating, then we have little to fear from a smaller force. It is unlikely they are under-estimating as well, and even if they are an army of even two thousand would not much chance our tactics, nor our resolve. Therefore, we can assume the truth and prepare to adjust as needed.

"What shall we do with them; we can't let them to just go free," he will ask Validar.

"Indeed, not. You may choose to bind them securely hear and leave them for the guards to find or you may kill them yourself. Either way a handful of goblins is of little consequence.

Lord Validar listens to the comments from their dwarven ally. "Indeed we were making some assumptions, Aria. As I am sure you know more about the make-up of these tunnels than I, I welcome your counsel."

"I think it would be best to have the scouts explore ahead before launching the wagons. Make sure they are going to reach a worthwhile target first."

"It is feasible. We run the risk of being encountered along the way, but I think it is not a major problem. Very well, we shall take the wagons down as the scouts move on ahead about 300-500 yards. We will position Arocken and Grondar part way between the scouts and the rest of us for communication purposes."

"That we will," Valena will add. "And every shot will have to count. Perhaps we should use a fourth wagon to bring additional supplies down with us, such as more arrows. The wagon could even be flipped over to block the passage and give us archers a position to fire from."

"It is certainly doable. If we could locate an adequate supply, then we may as well bring ammunition with us. I would hope that this doesn't become a drawn out battle, but it could prove handy. Very well, see if we can locate any arrows."

However, when the plan with the wagons is brought up, Ivy will say, "I do have another Silence spell in memory. It could be used to mask the noise made by one of the wagons as it travels down the tunnel."

"A fine suggestion, Ivy of Azrella. That will help to add to the surprise factor most certainly. We shall make use of this spell once more."

Laucian - "We will hold our ground as best we can till your arrival Validar. Though if we encounter hostiles, and I'm sure we shall, we will need to form a fighting line so our archers/ mages can cause havoc within the ranks."

"If all goes according to plan, you should not run into a full compliment of enemy before we can arrive. We may be in a running battle if we continue to encounter smaller contigents along the way and we will need to establish an attack position when we find the full army of these scum. That is what our plan is designed to do and I am certain that we will succeed in our mission to drive these vermin from the field."

Battle Under Corunglain

Aria wrote:"The mountains in this area are not as rich in minerals and metals as those of our homeland. It is only natural that any settlements here be smaller than in Rockhome. Save for the legendary Gloryhole Mine, of course."
"Ahh, Gloryhole," Grondar murmurs, a tone of awe in his voice. "I have spent much of my life hoping to someday walk the halls of that fabled place."
Sherra wrote:Completely deadpan, Sherra replies, <"I think you should save that magic of yours for the dwarven ladies."> Undoubtably, Grondar is going to look at her, and Sherra will maintain the straight face for as long as she can. Eventually though, a smile will start to break free until she can not contain it anymore, and will enjoy a moment of laughter with her dwarven friend.
Grondar looks at Sherra confusedly for a moment. "Heh," he snorts.

"Heh heh heh." Moments later, the snort becomes a chuckle.

After another moment's silence, Grondar dissolves in a roaring guffaw. Laughing so hard his sides hurt, the dwarf clamps his arms along his ribs in a vain effort to relieve the strain.

<"Please don't say that around Aria..."> He hates to think what the dwarven lady would say, but he knows it would likely be more than he can bear.
Validar wrote:"It is clear that the Hextorites and perhaps Keln herself are attempting to attack where they are not expected. Grondar listens seriously to the mention of the attack on Gateway. "Is there anything more that you can tell us of the events at Gateway? Perhaps they will provide a clue to our current situation."

Grondar adds a question to Rathlar and Laucian's questioning of the goblin captive(s). "Are there any other forces down there besides the goblins? Any orcs, hobgoblins, bugbears, ogres or other creatures we should know about?" The numbers mentioned already are impressive, but Validar is right in that goblins tend to be cowardly and weak, and they should be able to dispatch them. However, if there are other foes as well, the battle could prove much more difficult.

The discussion of foes leads to a concern about arrow supplies. "A few extra crossbow bolts wouldn't go astray, either," Grondar adds as Valena and Sherra begin the search for additional missiles.

Grondar nods sagely as Aria brings up the issue of negotiating the burning wagons through the passages. "I must agree with Aria. Whether natural, goblin-dug or carved by dwarves, underground passages rarely run straight for any great distance." Fortunately, Validar takes Aria's counsel to heart and modifies their plans accordingly. He takes note of his own new assignment as messenger between the scouts and the main force. With his ensorcelled speed, it is a task he is well suited to.

Predictably, Laucian brings up the issue of what to do with the the goblins they have questioned, and Validar leaves the decision up to the elf. Grondar grits his teeth, knowing from experience that this group will not listen to his words if he protests their slaughter. Instead, he turns away to consider the blessings that the Revered Mother has bestowed upon him and how best to use them as they proceed.

The attack on Gateway was similar in combatants: humanoids made up the bulk of the enemy. And with Gateway they introduced a foul potion that weakened the defenders into the city's water supply. Now they threaten the Western lands of Cynalon. They shall be defeated once more."

Grondar listens seriously to the mention of the attack on Gateway. "Is there anything more that you can tell us of the events at Gateway? Perhaps they will provide a clue to our current situation."

"There is quite a tale in that, my dwarven friend. But the important details are as follows: As most all of you know, Cynalon and Keln have been at odds as long as anyone can remember. Keln was eventually defeated and Cynalon entered a long period of rebuilding. Also weakened by the constant wars, the humanoid invasions took parts of the Western Outer realms."

"However, seeing the plans enacted lately by the Hextorites, I am wondering if the humanoid attacks were not engineered by Keln in some way. In any case, the scum who worship Hextor are closely tied with Keln and likely running what has been recollected recently. Their base is in what they call New Keln, previously called Keln's Port in the south."

"Last year Gateway was finally taken from old Keln lands by General Logan and set up as a staging point for raids and for adventurers to help push back the vestiges of Keln influence and the many humanoid raiders who lived in these areas as well. While riding with the Seekers in the Frontier, the area of Keln now no longer controlled directly by them and the area Cynalon seeks to expand further into, we eventually encountered evidence of a large goblinoid army moving on Gateway."

"We eventually learned that the Hextorites were behind the attack and it included giants, orcs and goblins as well as their own black-garbed forces. The Hextorites had used a vile potion that had the effect of incapacitating the drinker. Our leader and Heironeous priest Cereld eventually came upon an antidote for the potion, by purifying and blessing it and using it as its own counter agent."

"The Hextorites introduced the potion into the water supply of Gateway and initiated a siege of the city. Fortunately, unlike in this instance, they had no direct way into the city and most likely were waiting for their vile potion to take further effect before assaulting the walls. The Seekers had tracked the goblins back to Gateway and attacked the encamped enemies. Eventually with the assistance of the 'cured' forces inside Gateway and our own assault, we drove the Hextorites and the goblins from the field of battle."

"There was to be a great mid-summer sacrifice to Hextor of magic items by those scum and the Crown had initiated a plan to assault Keln and put an end to it. Due to the setbacks caused by the Seekers and other adventuring parties, the sacrifice was cancelled by the evil priesthood. Therefore the attack was changed to an assault on New Keln to settle this conflict once and for all in Spring. However, that too has since been cancelled by our own King."

"The Hextorites and Keln have been a constant thorn and opponent to Cynalon and it continues here in this place. One day we must put an end to their vileness for all time. I do not know if any of this general information has helped with insights to what may be happening here. Clearly they are linked due to the involvement of our black-hearted enemies."

Grondar turns to Validar. "I, too, have been blessed by my patron with this magic. Whether to use it for this purpose or save it for use on any spellcasters we may encounter, I shall leave up to you."

"Very good. I think it best to save should we encounter a future need for such a spell. It is indeed useful against enemy spellcasters as well as other uses should we find ourselves in multiple battles. It is a short-lasting spell in my experience."

Post Continued:

The questioning of the goblins continues.
Grondar adds a question to Rathlar and Laucian's questioning of the goblin captive(s). "Are there any other forces down there besides the goblins? Any orcs, hobgoblins, bugbears, ogres or other creatures we should know about?"
"Oh, we thought you only meant number of goblins," the prisoners quickly answer as Silvermane growls inches from the humanoid's face.

The goblins converse among themselves and start to throw out figures for various races. They don't agree with each other, but you can get a consensus. They believe that there are at least 700 orcs, 500 hobgoblins, about 100 gnolls and bugbears, and maybe 50 or so trolls down in the great cavern. They claim to have seen a dark elf or two, but can't swear to just how many there are.

It is decided to scout ahead first instead of just sending flaming wagons down the tunnel. Four wagons are quickly lined up to be used for the mission. However, there's only enough flammable material for two wagons, so a third is discarded. Lantern oil is the flammable material in this case.

Several cases of arrows, bolts, and even sling stones are located. They can be placed on the last wagon, the lids of the crates open for easy access. Since you have no pack animals, the wagons will need to be controlled by hand. The stronger members of the group can control them well enough during the trip.

Once everything is ready, it's down the tunnel. The scouts move well ahead of the main group with Arocken and Grondar spaced in between to provide communication between the two groups. Laucian, Sherra, Valena, and Rathlar and his wolves comprise the scout group.

The tunnel proceeds downward at roughly a thirty degree angle and mostly straight. The passage does swerve to the left and to the right and a few large boulders are encountered, forcing you to lead the wagons around them.

After descending what the dwarves will estimate to be about 80' feet, a few side passages are seen, but they don't appear to have seen recent use. Aria believes these to just be part of the honeycomb of tunnels and passages underneath Corunglain that were mentioned before. They tend to be unstable and are quickly sealed off either by the defenders of the city or due to collapsing on their own. The main passage continues onward.

Around 200' feet below ground, a large second tunnel comes into view. This one comes up on your right and it appears similar to the one that you're traveling in and it leads upward. Scouts quickly explore this tunnel and finds that it runs upwards over 150' before ending. There is an opening much like the one you went down in the warehouse, with the exception that there is a wall of solid stone covering the top.

Travel continues onward and the minutes crawl by. The dwarves estimate that you're now over 500' below ground. Not only that, but you've traveled outside the city walls. (The basic direction of the tunnel is to the north-northwest, towards the Broken Lands.)

After passing the second upwards tunnel, the main passageway maintains about a forty-foot width. It continues to twist and turn, but roughly maintains the same northwesterly direction. Travel continues onward and the dwarves estimate that you're nearly 1200' below ground.

Sound reaches those with sharp hearing. It is the sound of innumerable voices from up ahead. There are too many voices being heard to clearly hear what any one of them is saying. It sounds like a large gathering is up ahead. The tunnel is becoming lighter as you draw closer to the voices.

Finally, some 2000' below ground, the scouts reach the large cavern the goblins spoke off. Their description of it does not do it justice. The great cavern in question is roughly 200' to 300' wide, and 200' long. The ceiling vaults overhead an impressive 175' to 250'. Natural terraces lead down from the tunnel to this grand cavern.

The entire cavern is choked with humanoids of all shapes and sizes. There are camp fires here and there amongst the cavern. Many orcs, goblins, and hobgoblins can been seen camped out here. Rough guess would place their total number in the 1500 range. Most are just relaxing in their little camps, enjoying the spoils of what they have stolen from Corunglain. A few fights break out here and there, but they are quickly broken up.

At least a dozen exits can be seen from this cavern. Some are quite huge, the largest being 70' wide, while others are just large enough for a single individual to move through.

The scouts retreat to report what they have found to the main group.

GM Notes:

At last you've located the main invasion force and they are legion!

The tunnel exit is 40' wide into this great cave. There are several large terraces that transition from the tunnel to the cavern floor. It would be possible for archers to be elevated above frontline fighters and have more than enough targets to fire at by using these terraces.

The scouts are 40-50' away from the tunnel exit with the main group in the 150-190' from them. Arocken and Grondar are in between these two.

Now what?

Quote:

"I had a feeling they were speaking in half truths," he will merely state.

Validar wrote
"Indeed, not. You may choose to bind them securely here and leave them for the guards to find or you may kill them yourself. Either way a handful of goblins is of little consequence."
"As you wish," he merely states as he readies his sword to slash out at the captives. Though from the corner of his eye he sees Grondar turn suddenly as though not wanting to see.

Against all better judgement he recalls what the dwarf said a night ago. "Bind and gag them." He says loudly enough so that Grondar can hear, "Though we will not leave them here unguarded."As the first goblin is bound and gagged he will place them within crates where there is room and seal them in.

"Let their masters find them and deal with them."

As they move into the earth, Laucian's nerves are tested as they begin to move deeper. The very walls seem to be closing in about him as he moves cautiously forward. "I do not care to be among the filth of a goblin hole." As he tries to remember the trees of his kin to settle his mind and spirit.

The tunnel comes to an enormous cavern where a large number of humanoids have gathered, "Well it seems they haven't retreated at all," he says to himself, as he wills his ring of Chameleon power to adapt to his surroundings.

He will send word to the others to move quietly and be on their guard for the whole invasion force seems to be ahead of them.

Lord Validar -

Before the Guardians enter the tunnels, Validar addresses the group.

"I am pleased to fight beside each of you. I know that we all will fight to the best of our abilities and we will not allow ourselves to be defeated. This combat is dangerous and I know that if any of us give our lives this day, we shall do so grudgingly."

"We fight for the greater good. We oppose evil at every turn and we shall drive it from our midst on this day. May each of you strike hard and strike true and together we will carry this day."

"Drakkimor and his band are headed into the tunnels from the other warehouse entrance, but we cannot be certain that they will be involved in the same combat as us. Therefore it is simply up to the 14 of us. There are no reinforcement and there is no further help coming. We simply have to defeat about 200 enemies each." The last part Lord Validar says with a wry smile on his face.

Before they leave, Validar will spend a few moments chatting with each of the spellcasters regarding what they are carrying and how they expect their roles to play out.

As we reach the tunnel going upward blocked by a Wall of Stone, Validar asks the scouts of they can determine if anyone just recently went down this path and also if this appears to be approximately where the other warehouse would be (question for the dwarfs and Valena to coordinate on)? I am wondering if this is Drakkimor's warhouse attack if they just closed the entrance and stayed above or closed it behind them and moved in?

Once the Guardians and their allies reach the main cavern, the scouts return with info on their reconaissance. Validar begins to mentally create the situation and comes up with a plan.

"The scouts should check the entrance to the tunnel for signs of traps or any guards while we organize ourselves. It is not likely, but I do not wish to be surprised right away."

"We will prepare the wagons as we stated before and send them into the humanoids midst. As that happens, the archers will be positioned just inside the tunnel on the top terrace and begin to rain down missiles on our foes. We will stage the last wagon on this terrace so as to have a ready supply of missiles should they be needed. This can also be a bit of cover for some of the archers as well. However, we do not want to be too close together in case the enemy has a chance to bring spellcasters into the fray."

"The fighters will then advance down a tier or two and prepare for the main assault to reach us. We must be certain to hold our ranks and not advance into the enemy. We must defend those near us and operate as a single unit. Otherwise we will be individually overwhelmed."

"At the intial attack, the mages should cast their area effect spells and spread them across the front of the encamped enemy. If we can eliminate those closest to us, it will take longer for the enemy to reach us and give us more volleys for the archers and mages. By my understanding, Magic Missiles and Lightning Bolts should reach any point in the cavern. Use your Fireballs and other medium range attacks on advancing groups, especially of the larger humanoids and the trolls."

"If we encounter a situation where we have to retreat, then the mages need to cover us with their defensive spells and we will engage in a fighting withdrawal. I do not want any of us to advance far into the cavern unless we cause huge casualties and the tide turns severely in our favor."

"We need the archers to try and locate leaders. While we prepare, they should be scanning the area for possible leader targets. If there are spellcasters on the field, we need to identify them as soon as possible and take them out as quickly as we are able. The humanoids are enough of a threat, but the presence of powerful leaders could cause us some serious concern."

"The mages, Chareos, Lyonessa and Argent, should be spread out and also interspersed with the archers so as to be defended and also to not concentrate them in case the enemy counter-attacks with magic. Those with Fly spells should cast them in advance so as to be ready should the ability be needed, but I would not want that to be used right away. No need to make targets of you. Rather I would use this ability in our advance and as increased fields of fire."

"Corley and Chareos and perhaps Aria should be enough to get the flaming wagons rolling into the humanoids' midst. Do not wait until they make contact before starting to fire. We need to get as many volleys into the enemy as we can. The wagons may be a diversion and a chance to gain us more fire opportunities as they either avoid their crash or retreat from them."

"Grondar, while you have a crossbow, I would like to see you with the front line fighters. There are only six of us including you and our line has to hold against the crush of advancing humanoids. Ivy will b in that group as well, but if you need to retreat back to use your spells then do so. We will align as such: Aria, Grondar, Lord Corley, myself, Ivy and Lord Acerion from left to right. The clerics are then on the center point of each flank and can be supported should spellcasting be necessary or advantageous. If either of you can Hold or Silence and leaders or spellcasters at the beginning of the attack, that would be very helpful."

"Cast what preparatory spells each of you are going to cast and let us all move into position. Strike hard, strike fast, strike true and strike often. This battle shall be truly glorious."

Lyonessa:

Lyonessa gathers her courage and joins the others as they descend into the tunnel. Quite a bit of time passes as side tunnels are explored, but Lyonessa is grateful for the thoroughness of everyone. Eventually the scouts find what we all were looking for: the invasion force.

The scene is described and she takes it all in with a bit of awe at the size of the underground world. She listens closely to Validar's plan and it sounds solid to her. Using the scouts' information, she decides on a spot that will work best for her magic. Before everyone breaks away though, she gathers them together to rally them, "Remember what we have done, what I have witnessed us do in my short time with all of you. It is the stuff of ballads and tales for the generations already. I have no doubt we will break the spirit of this force and we will strike swift and true. May my words, those of Validar and all of us be an additional strength to help carry each of us through this coming battle."

Just before she gets into position herself, she will cast Blur on herself and then prepare for the initial attack.

Lyonessa will use the bonus from the rally to give a bonus to everyone's attack rolls.

Battle Under Corunglain

Grondar:

Grondar listens as Validar gives a recounting of the seige of Gateway. It is a long and fascinating tale. There is a nagging instinct in the dwarf's brain trying to tell him that the tale holds some key to the current situation, but it eludes his detection. Perhaps it will come to him.

"Thank you for telling me the story, Validar. Perhaps it will prove useful in the coming struggle."

Later, during the questioning, the goblins admit to a large number of other forces in their camp - even trolls. This will indeed be a monumental battle, and there is no guarantee that they will survive it. Grondar takes a moment to give blessings to Berronar and ask her to watch over and protect them.
Laucian wrote:"As you wish," he merely states as he readies his sword to slash out at the captives.

Hearing the elf's words, Grondar turns back and walks over to him. "Thank you, Laucian. I know that was difficult for you, and I appreciate this gesture more than you know." In truth, Grondar feels that this will benefit the elf even more than the goblins in the long run, but has no way to say so that won't sound hackneyed or foolish. "May the gods bless you, my friend."

Validar makes a rousing speech about their mission into the earth to drive off the invaders. Grondar has heard many similar speeches over the years and he revels in the familiarity and heartfelt sincerity of it. Afterwards, the joins the spell planning discussion, offering his best ideas and encouragement.

Soon, they begin the trek down into the earth. In some ways, it is like going home for the dwarf, but home was never this crudely built. Such crude work can never compare to true dwarven craftsmanship.

As they move deeper and deeper into the earth's warm embrace, they pass tunnels branching off in other directions. At each one, Grondar pauses a momenht in an attempt to determine which - if any - is the one that connects to the other entrance near the eastern gatehouse.

Eventually, they reach their destination far beneath and beyond the walls of the city. A huge natural cavern opens out before and beneath them. Numerous exits lead out of the cavern in other directions. It is a grand vista, and Grondar pauses to appreciate the wonder of nature that it is. However, his eyes are inevitably drawn to the fractious goblinoids and their momentary allies that litter the floor of the cavern. As is so often the case, they squabble and fight among themselves; this has always been their weakness. Grondar races back to relay the message to the trailing group.

The group reforms a little ways back up the tunnel. Validar discusses strategy with them and gives out assignments. He seems to have put a lot of thought into this and his battle plan seems sound.
Validar wrote:"Grondar, while you have a crossbow, I would like to see you with the front line fighters. There are only six of us including you and our line has to hold against the crush of advancing humanoids. "I would be honored to join you and the other warriors in the front line, Lord Validar. It should take them a little while to reach us, and that will give me a little time to get off some bolts and spells before the real fight begins."
Validar wrote:"Cast what preparatory spells each of you are going to cast and let us all move into position. Strike hard, strike fast, strike true and strike often. This battle shall be truly glorious."
Grondar nods grimly and moves off to begin his preparations. First, he will offer a Protection From Evil to Sherra - or Laucian if she should decline. Next, he gathers the archers and other ranged attackers around him and casts Prayer as the other warriors take up their position on the ramp. Afterwards, he races down to join them and casts Protection From Evil, 10' Radius where it will benefit Aria, Lord Corley and himself just as the battle begins.

Readying his crossbow, he joins the other archers in firing down into the massed opponents below. Grondar keeps his eye open for any sign of spellcasters or leaders. If he finds one, he casts a Hold Person on them individually so as to make it as hard to resist as possible, then resumes firing.

Just before the first wave of goblinoids reaches them, Grondar stows his crossbow and casts Resitation centered on himself. Then, preparing his shield and Truthgiver, he enters the fray.

"Thank you for telling me the story, Validar. Perhaps it will prove useful in the coming struggle."

"So far I have been unable to determine any connection other than the participants and the similar method used by those vile scum. We did nothing unusual to defeat them, other than Cereld's reversal of the potion's effects. The day was won with strength of arms and magickal skills."

"I would be honored to join you and the other warriors in the front line, Lord Validar. It should take them a little while to reach us, and that will give me a little time to get off some bolts and spells before the real fight begins."

"There will be plenty for each of us when the horde does reach us. And a good thought I might add to use your ranged abilities while able, before the crush of the advancing enemy is upon us. If the mages and archers are successful, it will keep the horde from making contact that much longer as well."

Validar listens to the words and acknowledges the bard's words with an upraised sword. Then he watches for a moment as final preparations are made.

Lord Validar joins the others and looks on grimly as spells are cast and the archers start to rain down missiles on the enemy. A moment later, the lit wagons are sent down into the horde's midst and spells start to go off among the enemy. Validar readies himself and continues to scan the group below for signs of the leaders, as he grips his swordhilt even tighter. The few moments before the combat begins are always the most agonizing for the young noble.

"Keep in communication with everyone! We need to act as one! Do not allow yourself to get cut off from the others!" Validar shouts some last minute advice as the horde reacts to their attack.

A Slight Change to the BattlePlan:

GM MAD has informed me that Rathlar is not much of a bowman. He is more of a scout and tracker rather than a hunter. So he is going to take the far left flank with his wolves and do as Grondar. Fire some arrows while he can and then fight Hand to Hand as the enemy approaches.

Any of the other close combat fighters who have ranged weapons should do likewise. Every kill counts when fighting 1500 enemy at once.

Battle Plan:

Here is a rough graphical representation of where everyone is. It is assumed that the archers and mages on the higher tier are behind boulders or stalagtites/mites as available for cover.

Image

The clerics on the front row are slighly back to cast spells/fire missiles. The ranged fire line to the back has the fighter types (Arocken, Laucian and Chareos) towards the flanks so they can fill in the front line or extend it as necessary or perhaps do a flanking move on an enemy.

This is not intended to be to scale.

Some Corrections:

Here's what the battlefield looks like:

Image

The terraces are more in the cave then on Validar's map. There are no boulder's/stalagmites to be used for cover. The squares are the standard 10' in size.

Rathlar also planned to let the wolves wander between the lines and have them take on anyone that slipped past the first ranks. They are far more than just pets to him, so he's not going to risk them being killed while on the front line. The actual space is probably a little smaller than what you were expecting. (This wasn't mentioned when I talked to Validar earlier, so he had no way to know.)

Battleplan -

Was going just on what was posted. The text made it seem like the terraces were outside the tunnel rather than mostly inside them. But we can pretty much adapt to the terrain as shown.

In any case, my visual is just for a frame of reference. We need to move into the cavern enough so that the archers are not bunched up excessively. Likely they will need to be on the first and second tier, while the front line advances more into the cave. We do not want to be bunched into the tunnel, but want to be able to retreat to the opening if there are too many enemies massing against our line.

The tunnel opening limits how many of the enemy can attack at one time and that would be a good defensive position should it be necessary. The wagon will be staged at the edge of the left side of the tunnel opening.

Also I figured the wolves would be more of an assistance and that's why I had them behind him. Didn't imagine they would hold up against so many humanoids. So that is just fine.

Moving back within the tunnels Validar as well as Lyonessa give uplifting speeches that can't help to move the elf. He will acknowledge each speech with a silent nod, not wanting to make too much noise, and a raise of his bow.

When the time comes for pre-battle casting Laucian will cast a Bless on as many of his comrades as he is able.

Taking up his position on the left flank Laucian will nock an arrow to his bow and continue to rain arrows down upon their enemies, when the wagons begin to confuse those humaniods below.

Chareos
Pushing the wagon down the tunnel proves to be a chore not so much for the brute strength required but more so the handling of turns. The young mage can't help but know how a labor mule feels as he manuevers the wagon through the depths of the earth.

After a time the scouts report contact and begin to tell what lies ahead. Afterward Validar and Lyonessa invoke speeches expressing how proud they are to be among those gathered. The young mage can't help but feel uplifted by their words and he expresses his excitement by a tight grip on his staff as he raises it in agreement!

When Lord Validar orders the precasting of spells to begin Chareos will offer any of the front line fighters the benefit of his Cat's Grace spell, which increases one's dex, and then cast Fly upon himself.

Taking up his position on the left flank near Laucian, Chareos makes ready for the Tide of Humaniods to break across our rocks. Chareos will make ready with his spells. He will cast his Fireball spell at the front line of the camp as the Wagons tumble into their ranks, Aiming it at any Trolls or Big ugly Humanoids that may stand out in the front ranks (Leaders)

Corley:

Lord Corley assists in helping take the wagons down the tunnel with his magically-enhanced strength. A side tunnel is found along the way.
As we reach the tunnel going upward blocked by a Wall of Stone, Validar asks the scouts of they can determine if anyone just recently went down this path and also if this appears to be approximately where the other warehouse would be (question for the dwarfs and Valena to coordinate on)? I am wondering if this is Drakkimor's warehouse attack if they just closed the entrance and stayed above or closed it behind them and moved in?
"Before Lady Sherra arrived bearing your message of these warehouses," Corley will explain, "It was Drakkimor's intent to reach the Duke's Fortress and lend aid there. Perhaps by repelling the Fire Giants, if the snow storm had not already done so."

Later the news that we've found the main invasion force comes. Lord Validar lays out his plans and Lady Lyonessa inspires us with one of her fine tellings. The battle strategy is simple, even for Corley. Anchor the middle of the front line.

"I shall hold the line," Lord Corley declares. "None shall pass and those who attempt to do so will be dispatched to their foul makers! The line will hold!"

Once the attacks begin, Corley will have his sword at the ready and will engage those who close in on him.

Argent:
Lyonessa wrote:"Not a particular trip I'm overly looking forward to," Lyonessa will reveal, staring down into the looming darkness. "Although from what I'm hearing from the others, it sounds like we will be going," she replies after pausing a few moments to listen to Validar and the others discussing plans.
"Nor I," Argent will agree, "But it appears that we have no choice in the matter."
Lyonessa wrote:Turning to face Argent she will admit, "Still it will be better to take the fight to them. These people have suffered enough at the ravages of their invaders."
"Agreed. Better to fight them down here than up in the city. I won't have to worry about catching any innocents within my spells or damaging property."

Argent listens to Validar's tale with great interest. This all transpired after she had departed with the Company of the Sword on their mission to the northeast. It was only told to her later when she encountered the Seekers at Karn's Keep.
Validar wrote:As we reach the tunnel going upward blocked by a Wall of Stone, Validar asks the scouts of they can determine if anyone just recently went down this path and also if this appears to be approximately where the other warehouse would be (question for the dwarfs and Valena to coordinate on)? "It might be possible that this other warehouse was left unguarded and didn't seem as great a threat as the giants attacking the fortress. Sealing the tunnel of makes sense to prevent re-entry into the city at that point."

Lord Validar wrote:"At the initial attack, the mages should cast their area effect spells and spread them across the front of the encamped enemy. Use your Fireballs and other medium range attacks on advancing groups, especially of the larger humanoids and the trolls."
The talk turns to the application of spells, something that Argent will pay particular attention to. "Also, based on the formation put forth by Lord Validar, I'll be in the middle with Chareos on the left and Lyonessa on the right. Concentrate your efforts to your particular sides of the cavern. No sense in overlapping our magicks. I'll focus my spells to the middle of the cavern."
Lord Validar wrote:"If we encounter a situation where we have to retreat, then the mages need to cover us with their defensive spells and we will engage in a fighting withdrawal. I do not want any of us to advance far into the cavern unless we cause huge casualties and the tide turns severely in our favor."

"I can perform this task Lord Validar. I can fill the tunnel with a web while we retreat up it. Also, I do have another spell that I can invoke once I've spent all my magicks or it appears that we are on the verge of being overwhelmed. I can conjure a Wall of Fire to either completely separate us from the enemy or use it to further limit the number of humanoids that can reach us. The spell will last for as long as I concentrate on it and do nothing else. It will cause damage to those on the other side of the wall and help curtail their numbers."
Lord Validar wrote:"Corley and Chareos and perhaps Aria should be enough to get the flaming wagons rolling into the humanoids' midst. Do not wait until they make contact before starting to fire. We need to get as many volleys into the enemy as we can. The wagons may be a diversion and a chance to gain us more fire opportunities as they either avoid their crash or retreat from them."
"Hold a moment!", Argent calls out. Stepping up to Lord Validar the Invoker will add, "I just remembered something that may help to even further confuse and confound the enemy. One of the other effects of a Pyrotechnics spell, apart from the creation of fireworks, is to generate a thick cloud of smoke that blinds all trapped within. I would estimate that I may very well be able to fill the majority of the cavern with this smoke. Then hit them with the wagons and begin our offensive siege. What do you think?"

Regardless if this idea is approved or not, Argent will cast Fly right before the wagons are released and then take a position near Valena and the wagon holding the arrows and bolts.

Ivy:

The trip down the long tunnel seems almost surreal. Ivy doesn't say much and stays close to Lord Acerion. Ivy will nod her understanding of the battle plans and her role in it.

"Should it be necessary, I can also Withdraw from the battle to help heal others or even cast my own Bless."

Once the wagons are ready, Ivy will cast Silence on the first and then rush to take her place in the battle plan. She'll cast her Hold Person and Charm Person spells on anyone who seems to be a leader. Otherwise she'll use her mace against the enemy between Lord Validar and Lord Acerion.

"It is certainly doable. If we could locate an adequate supply, then we may as well bring ammunition with us. I would hope that this doesn't become a drawn out battle, but it could prove handy. Very well, see if we can locate any arrows."
"I'm sure there are plenty here to be found. I'll find them as I know what to look for."
As they move into the earth, Laucian's nerves are tested as they begin to move deeper. The very walls seem to be closing in about him as he moves cautiously forward. "I do not care to be among the filth of a goblin hole." As he tries to remember the trees of his kin to settle his mind and spirit.
Laucian's feelings mirror Valena's as well. "Our kind is not meant to live in the depths of the earth away from the woods, the wind, and the sky. It is not natural."

Valena examines the ground, but her findings are inconclusive. "Hundreds of beings passed through this tunnel within the last twelve hours. All going down, not up. This location should correspond to the second warehouse I noted."

Valena will take one of the crates of arrows and keep them within reach. She'll fire three shots per round initially. Should it be necessary to enter hand-to-hand combat, she'll cast Strength of Stone first.

Aria

Post by Aria Stonehand »

Aria:
"Ahh, Gloryhole," Grondar murmurs, a tone of awe in his voice. "I have spent much of my life hoping to someday walk the halls of that fabled place."
"Recovery of the Gloryhole Mine would ensure legendary status for those involved. That is something I would not refuse to be sure. Plus, it is said that several powerful magical axes are to be found in the Gloryhole. The legendary Azuredge for one."
Lord Validar listens to the comments from their dwarven ally. "Indeed we were making some assumptions, Aria. As I am sure you know more about the make-up of these tunnels than I, I welcome your counsel."

"Happy to be of service."
"I have more than enough strength to perform this task."
Soon, they begin the trek down into the earth. In some ways, it is like going home for the dwarf, but home was never this crudely built. Such crude work can never compare to true dwarven craftsmanship.
"Disappointing, is it not? The work of amateurs. I would be ashamed to say that I worked on this myself."

Aria nods her understanding of her role in the battle to come. Battleaxe drawn, she'll await the enemy scum to reach her.

"On my father's honor, I swear that none of these fell creatures shall get past me!"

Lord Validar -

"Before Lady Sherra arrived bearing your message of these warehouses," Corley will explain, "It was Drakkimor's intent to reach the Duke's Fortress and lend aid there. Perhaps by repelling the Fire Giants, if the snow storm had not already done so."

Lord Validar scowls as he hears these words and sees the clues to the question unfold.

Valena examines the ground, but her findings are inconclusive. "Hundreds of beings passed through this tunnel within the last twelve hours. All going down, not up. This location should correspond to the second warehouse I noted."

Validar exclaims to the others, "We are indeed on our own. Drakkimor and his associates do not seem to be supporting us in this attack. They obviously had their own ideas on how to combat the enemy."

Argent - "It might be possible that this other warehouse was left unguarded and didn't seem as great a threat as the giants attacking the fortress. Sealing the tunnel of makes sense to prevent re-entry into the city at that point."

"Perhaps. I would have expected there to be a remnant of goblins scrounging around there as well." Validar is about to say something else, when he decides against it. "No matter. We shall defeat the enemy ourselves."

"Very good, Argent," Validar will say. "From the center vantage point, you can help to direct the spells of the others, as well as your own. Magick will certainly help us to win this day. Make each of your abilities count as much as possible."

"If we encounter a situation where we have to retreat, then the mages need to cover us with their defensive spells and we will engage in a fighting withdrawal. I do not want any of us to advance far into the cavern unless we cause huge casualties and the tide turns severely in our favor."

"A Web will be useful for a moment, as will a Wall of Fire. If we give the call to retreat, then cast your Wall of Fire just past the engaged enemies against the front line. In this way, the Wall will slow down any pursuit and we can enter the tunnel safely, should it be necessary, simply by disengaging from the current combat."

"The Wall of Fire may also prove helpful against a concentration of Trolls. As will Chareos' Sphere of Fire. Otherwise I would hold it until necessary. Perhaps if the enemy is strongly organized and advancing, but we are still holding our own."

Ivy will nod her understanding of the battle plans and her role in it.

"Should it be necessary, I can also Withdraw from the battle to help heal others or even cast my own Bless."

"Very good. We do not know what we will be facing besides the horde and Healing may be necessary for many of our number while the battle still rages."

Lord Validar listens to the Invoker explain the spell and nods as she concludes her thought. "Yes, that will be most helpful. The longer we can delay the organization and comprehensive attack by the enemy, the more time we will have to deal with only a part of the horde. That will certainly give us more time to deal with this force and offer a better chance of our success."

"My suggestion would be to fill slightly over half of the cavern with smoke. We want to have clear lines of fire to the enemy for our missiles and spells. If we can be certain to obscure the openings leading to the otehr tunnels as well, then we could delay anything that might be there as well." Validar does not indicate that he has concern there is another horde of enemy in an adjacent cavern such as this one. "If the leaders are off in their own area, then it will help to keep the humanoids from organizing as well."

Acerion

Acerion:

As we delve down into the waiting earth, Acerion will lend a hand as needed with any of the wagons. Otherwise he keeps close to Ivy, an unrecognizeable mood on his features. He would probably enjoy the trip underground a bit more if not for the fact they are seeking out the enemy army. He would love to marvel at the terrain and the sheer size of the tunnel, but his mind is focused on the task ahead. Too many have suffered, not just his own people, at the rampagings of hordes such as this one, and he means to put a stop to this one for starters before it can do any more harm.

Everyone moves into position after listening to Lyonessa's stirring words. He marvels at her ability to keep everything simple and yet move everyone present.

He moves into position after stealing a long glance at Ivy. What he wouldn't do to find a place for them to be together and at peace, but this is not to be right now. There is always the future and the hope it brings...

Acerion will pull out his enchanted horn. Knowing he may not be able to get everyone in its effects, he will linger closer to the middle until the attack begins, then he will sound the horn and quickly move into position, returning it for his holy axe and await the first foolish goblinoid to charge him.

the battle under the earth...

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Sherra will take as many arrows as Valena and her can locate. It may be true that they will not need to kill every last goblin to turn the tide of the battle, but Sherra doesn't want to run out just before their morale breaks. Loaded down with as much extra ammunition as she can carry, she's ready to head off into the tunnel.

Sherra doesn't care one way or another about entering the tunnel. It doesn't matter to her where the battle will be fought, but she is impressed by the sheer size of it all. She looks over at Grondar several times to see his impressions of it and smile warmly at him.

She will gladly accept Grondar's defensive magic as well as listening in to Lyonessa's speech. Anything that will help them, magical, emotional or otherwise, will be a welcome boon. She spends long moments looking out into the vast cavern, staring at the numbers amassed there. She moves into position, blending her armor to match the cavern walls and places arrows at numerous points nearby. It gives her some flexibility for the coming batle as she doesn't want to keep firing from one spot for too long, lest the enemy be clever enough to track the arrows back to her position.

As she waits, she will scout out targetable leaders or spellcasters, hoping to find several targets to choose from. She does not want to spend precious seconds scanning for a worthy target in the chaos of battle. Sherra will choose her best first target and ready an arrow, waiting with her bow half-drawn until the time to attack arrives. Tymora, guide my aim and watch over my friends this day, she thinks quietly to herself.

"I have heard tales of that wondrous blade," Grondar replies with a far-away sound to his voice. "It would be a great honor to look upon so storied an artifact.

"Practically speaking, I think it would behoove us to start with some of the smaller mines and work our way up to the Gloryhole. That would give up time to build up an appropriate force to meet the dread challenges we are likely to meet - if the tales have any truth to them."
Validar wrote:"So far I have been unable to determine any connection other than the participants and the similar method used by those vile scum. We did nothing unusual to defeat them, other than Cereld's reversal of the potion's effects. The day was won with strength of arms and magickal skills."
"You may be right, Validar. Perhaps I am trying to read too much into the situation. Still, something keeps nagging at the back of my brain. I'll let you know if I come up with anything that might be useful."
Validar wrote:"There will be plenty for each of us when the horde does reach us. And a good thought I might add to use your ranged abilities while able, before the crush of the advancing enemy is upon us. If the mages and archers are successful, it will keep the horde from making contact that much longer as well."
"We all use our skills as best we can, for the greater good."
Chareos wrote:When Lord Validar orders the precasting of spells to begin Chareos will offer any of the front line fighters the benefit of his Cat's Grace spell, which increases one's dex, and then cast Fly upon himself.
Once Chareos offers his spell to those on the front lines and explains what it does, Grondar speaks up. "I would be happy to receive such an enchantment, my friend. I'm afraid quickness and agility are a weak point for me. However, if you feel any of the others could make better use of it, then that is fine as well."
Valena wrote:Valena examines the ground, but her findings are inconclusive. "Hundreds of beings passed through this tunnel within the last twelve hours. All going down, not up. This location should correspond to the second warehouse I noted."
"I would agree with your estimation of the source of this tunnel. It seems that Argent's suspicions are correct. Drakkimor and his band do not appear to have followed our plan." Validar soon expresses his agreement with this conclusion. It seems they are truly on their own.
Aria wrote:"Disappointing, is it not? The work of amateurs. I would be ashamed to say that I worked on this myself."
Grondar huffs. "Bah! Most of these tunnels look to have been clawed out by rock reptiles or other similar beasts. It is hard to imagine that any intelligent creature would perform such crude work."

There is much discussion of specific individual tactics, but most of it does not involve Grondar, so he stays out of it.
Sherra wrote:She will gladly accept Grondar's defensive magic as well as listening in to Lyonessa's speech. Anything that will help them, magical, emotional or otherwise, will be a welcome boon.
Grondar smiles, happy that Sherra has accepted this blessing of his patron. He would be gravely saddened if she were not to survive this encounter.

Chareos will nod in a agreement and say, "I will confine my magics to the left flank. Hopefully between the three of us we can damage their morale even before a sword stroke falls."

He will cast his fireball spell at the left flank forefront of humaniods; aiming for leaders, priests or trolls that may present themselves (i.e. the ones that look like they are barking orders)

The topic of the Wall of Fire and His own spell, Flaming Sphere. comes to the forefront of discussion.
"The Wall of Fire may also prove helpful against a concentration of Trolls. As will Chareos' Sphere of Fire. Otherwise I would hold it until necessary. Perhaps if the enemy is strongly organized and advancing, but we are still holding our own."

"It may come a time where we may need to fall back into the tunnel, my friend," he pauses slightly. "Though I would hate to see it come about, the Flaming Sphere spell could be used to fill the tunnel as we escape. As long as I concentrate on its form the spell will remain intact and can be used to tumble after any humaniod that is foolish enough to approach." Then he adds thoughtfully, "Or it could be used to by us sometime as Argent works some of her magicks."

Chareos wrote:

"None of the others wish to have its enchantment, my friend. Besides as you pointed out you may be the most deserving of such a blessing," he will say with a smile. And then cast Cat's Grace on the Dwarf.
To serve and protect those who cannot.

Laucian
Before the battle Laucian will gather some arrows (hopefully there are extra quivers as well, Fingers crossed) and place them about him in case they are needed.

As the Wagons and spells soon are put into the field Laucian will take a silent moment to himself in prayer to his beloved Ehlonna. "Though you blessed us in the past, I ask for your favor once more. I ask of nothing for myself though; Protect my comrades and guide our aim. Whatever the outcome I trust in your guidence and influence."

With that being said the Elf steels himself for the coming battle. In doing so he nocks an arrow to his bow and takes aim at the left flank. When the humanoids come within range he will cast a Produce flame and throw it at the horde, afterward returning to his trusted bow.

Should hand to hand become necessary he will Draw his longsword and dagger, awaiting any humanoid foolish enough to step into his sword's embrace.
