New Frontiers #52

Vesubian Gate:

The latest wave of attackers has been repelled from the Vesubian Gatehouse. During this lull in the action, Valena hears voices calling out from the outside of the city. Rushing to the gatehouse, she looks out to find Lord Acerion, Lyonessa, and the pegasus standing on the bridge waiting to be let in.

The drawbridge is lowered and the trio gains entrance to the Vesubian Gatehouse. Lyonessa relates their adventures at the park to the north and their solo mission to stop the fire giants' bombardment of the Duke's Fortress. The pegasus was wounded when struck by a boulder in mid-flight and forced down. They landed on the western side of the Vesubian River and simply walked back to the gatehouse.

Just as Lyonessa is finishing up, her owl familiar, Dusk, flies in and settles down on her shoulder. It coos contentedly to her. Dusk mentally relates completing its assigned task to the Songstress.

West Gate:
"Indeed you are correct. I am a little concerned from where these ghouls came. Are they not ones to frequent graveyards? Would a battle of this scale be sufficient to draw them here or should we be concerned of a necromancer's presence as well?", Lord Validar will ask the mage.
"That is a misnomer," Drakkimor states. "Ghouls are not much different than any other creature in this aspect. They go where there is food. A conflict such as this is a banquet to them. I wouldn't be concerned about facing a necromancer just yet. Ghouls and ghasts are free-willed creatures unlike, say, skeletons and zombies. Their presence does not automatically indicate someone else is controlling them."
Validar will call back up to his elven ranger friend. "Arocken, fly the white flag here on your tower. We will continue to secure this gatehouse before moving on. Keep an eye out for any humanoids approaching."
On the tower top, Arocken raises the white flag signifying that the West Gatehouse is secure. He quickly follows this up with lowering the portcullis leading into the South Town district.

Crysania steps into the tower where Chareos located the ghouls. She fearlessly walks up to the creatures and displays her Holy Symbol. The priestess utters a command word and the power of Heironeous is brought forth. The divine energy obliterates the ghouls, leaving behind little more than ash. The ghast reels from the attack, but remains coherent enough to flee. Crysania chases after it and downs it with two strikes of her battleaxe.

Chareos and Lord Corley lead the solders as they move in to secure the towers. No more enemies are found within the West Gatehouse complex. More bodies are found inside the towers, including humans and goblinoids. In short order, the Gatehouse is secured.

Drakkimor will fish in his Bag of Holding and pull out a decanter. "Tell your men that I have fresh water available for them. This here is a Decanter of Endless Water. It will satisfy all their needs."

To demonstrate, Drakkimor will quickly fill the water troughs and rain barrels with fresh water.

"If we are going to be holding this position, then my associates and I shall be retiring for the evening. Unless there is something else you require of us?"

GM Notes:

The West Gatehouse is secure. Much like the Vesubian Gatehouse, the food stores have been previously plundered. Plenty of weapons are found and enough armor is found to fit all the men. (Some had to be removed from the dead, even from the goblinoids to do this.)

In case you haven't checked as of late, there has been a couple of updates to the D&D section of the Q-Files reposts on the main site. These games take place in same world as New Frontiers does.

The Frontier has advanced to the point where Validar left that game and turned up in New Frontiers #1.

Sword of Doom has been completed to where it later merges with the Frontier. This is the game where Argent originated.

A new game, Borderlands, has just begun. The set up rules for Borderlands are similar to the ones for this game. It is set in Elcadan and will feature many familiar faces and friends.

Check them out!

Gatehouse Secured...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

"That is a misnomer," Drakkimor states. "Ghouls are not much different than any other creature in this aspect. They go where there is food. A conflict such as this is a banquet to them. I wouldn't be concerned about facing a necromancer just yet. Ghouls and ghasts are free-willed creatures unlike, say, skeletons and zombies. Their presence does not automatically indicate someone else is controlling them."

"Very good. I simply wanted to be prepared in case in the voices that Arocken heard were not these ghouls but rather some unknown foul masters."

The Western Gatehouse is secured with the destruction of the ghouls and ghast who were feeding on the fallen soldiers and humanoids.

"Thank you, Drakkimor. I am certain that the men will be most appreciative." Lord Validar will remove his helm and drink as well.

"Lord Corley, you have command of the men. We will give them fresh water, arm and armor them from the weapon stores and clean up the dead in a fire. Set up four shifts to rotate them all through, as well as manning the walls. These troops will be remaining here. Once these steps have all been made, those not on guard duty can get some rest in the barracks. But have them remain ready as we should expect a follow-up attack once the humanoids find that we have closed up this gatehouse that they likely were using as a travel-way."

DRakkimor - "If we are going to be holding this position, then my associates and I shall be retiring for the evening. Unless there is something else you require of us?"

"Very well. Please get some rest. You have all done your share. There will be more fighting in the morning."

As the preparations are being made, Lord Validar will meet with the other three Guardians. "I have considered that we may be stretching ourselves thin by trying to control two gatehouses, but I think we have the resources amongst us and it will help to turn the morale on both sides of this battle in our favor."

"I would prefer to find more soldiers to help us guard these Gatehouses and hold them. If only we knew where to look. Short of going into battle at the other Gatehouses currently under contention."

"Lord Corley, you will have command of this location and these troops while I am away. Chareos and I will be travelling back to the Vesubian Gatehouse to meet up with the others and also to see why Lyonessa's owl was drawing our attention there. Arocken will remain here to help guard the walls."

Lord Validar claps his friend on his armored shoulder. "I will return before morning. Lead these troops well, my friend."

Turning to Chareos, he will add, "Are you ready for another ride?"

Validar will then ready himself and head out through the gates. He and Chareos ride at a full gallop toward the Vesubian Gatehouse.

What are the conditions of the catapults and ballistas at the Western Gatehouse?

Laucian

"It is good to see you as well Songstress," he will say with an easy and warm smile.

Lyonessa soon tells of what has happened to their assault on the fire giants, and how lucky they were to survive the boulder volley relatively unscathed. "It would seem Lady Luck has not left this city after all," he says quietly to himself.

He will inform their sitaution to the others about what took place at the Gatehouse leaving many minor details out though he makes it clear that it seems the Humaniods are testing the walls' defenses in different ways.

If Acerion allows him Laucian will begin seeing to Acerion's mount.

Chareos
Chareos and Lord Corley lead the solders as they move in to secure the towers. No more enemies are found within the West Gatehouse complex. More bodies are found inside the towers, including humans and goblinoids. In short order, the Gatehouse is secured.
As they begin to secure the tower Chareos moves in and out of rooms in his ghastly form conveying that there are no hostiles within and to move on. Before long his spell runs out causing him to regain his natural form.
Thankfully the castle is empty except for those whom have died in the recent battle.

Seeing the water spill from nowhere Chareos drinks from it, wiping the remains from his mouth with his robe.

Upon getting ready to leave he will wish Lord Corley luck, "May Tymora smile upon you my friend."

Slowly he turns to Lord Validar and gives a tired but determined smile, "Whether it be one more ride or a dozen; I will always be ready." Mounting up he takes his quarterstaff in hand and urges his mount forward to keep pace with Validar's mount.

Valena:
Laucian wrote:"As did you, Valena," he will say with equal feeling. "You honor me greatly, though your skill and speed with a bow is equally impressive. I am an archer of some skill, he will say modestly." On our last mission I was blessed by Ehlonna herself as she changed my mother's bow into a Hunter's bow."
Valena will eye the bow with wonder. She'll, if allowed, run her hand along the bow. "Yes, I can almost feel the presence of the Lady of the Forests in it. You have been greatly honored, Laucian."

"I've trained all my life with my bow to the point that it is an extension of myself. We are one and that is where my skill and speed comes from. Alas, such devotion has not made me as skilled with other weapons."
"Thank you," he will say as she helps bind his wounds.
"You are welcome."
"I am Lord Acerion, Paladin of Heironeous, and this is the songstress Lyonessa," Acerion calls out, not fearing the woman's drawn bow. "Where are Ivy, Laucian and the others?"

She nocks and leans forward over the battlements. Looking over himself he looks down. As he does so a sigh of relief and a small smile soon forms over his face. "Lower your weapon, Valena. They are our fellow Guardians, Acerion and Lyonessa."
Valena will ease up on her bowstring and return the arrow to her quiver. "Indeed, forest brother. Is that a pegasus I see? A most wondrous creature!"

Valena assists in lowering the drawbridge and then raising it once more once the adventurers are across. Likewise the defensive portcullis are raised and then lowered allowing them access to the courtyard. That task complete, Valena will meet the new arrivals down in the courtyard, eager to hear any news they may have.

"Well met. I am Valena Feador of Ehlonna, a member of the city guard. Will the rest of your group be returning soon? I have discovered the entry points the enemy is using to infiltrate the city. If we can close these off the tide of the battle will turn dramatically."

Ivy saw the elves run off to investigate something, but didn't know what. When she hears Laucian call out, Ivy will come running. She reaches the courtyard as they enter. Ivy wants to run up to Acerion to make sure he's alright and to hold him, but fights off the urge for such a public display of affection.

"You're safe! Azrella be praised! What has transpired? Why did you return this way?"
Acerion wrote:Seeing Laucian joining the woman and hearing his jest, Acerion smiles slightly, "My pegasus has been injured in our assault against the giants, so we had little choice. There is plenty to tell if only you would be so gracious as to let us back in."
Seeing the damage done to the Pegasus brings a tear to Ivy's eye. Such a proud and noble creature has served her friends well.

"I can heal the damage done here this day." Speaking up, Ivy will add, "Everyone who is injured gather near us. I'll use the power of my Holy Weapon to cure all your ailments in one fell swoop."

Argent breathes a sigh of relief when she hears this announcement. Hopefully this means that Lord Validar and the others are not far behind.

The Invoker joins the others down in the courtyard. "Since you are here, Lord Acerion and Lyonessa, then perhaps the time has come for me to create the magical dwelling so that we may rest for the evening and regain our spells."

Validar wrote:"Once the ghouls are defeated, Lord Corley, take Chareos and some soldiers in to finish scouting that tower. Then get to the top and have those portcullis closed. I would like to be quick about closing this area up and improving our defensive position."

Validar wrote:"Lord Corley, you have command of the men. We will give them fresh water, arm and armor them from the weapon stores and clean up the dead in a fire. But have them remain ready as we should expect a follow-up attack once the humanoids find that we have closed up this gatehouse that they likely were using as a travel-way."
Lord Corley tries to follow all of that, but misses a few things. Regardless, he'll pass these instructions on to the lieutenant so that they can follow the proper chain of command. "I'll see to it, my friend."
Validar wrote:As the preparations are being made, Lord Validar will meet with the other three Guardians. Lord Validar claps his friend on his armored shoulder. "I will return before morning. Lead these troops well, my friend."
"My first command," Corley notes with some surprise. "You can count on me, Lord Validar. We will hold this fortification at all costs!"
Chareos wrote:Upon getting ready to leave he will wish Lord Corley luck," May Tymora smile upon you my friend."
"No fate but what we make, my friend. No fate but what we make."

Once Validar and Chareos are off, Corley will have the portcullis lowered once more. He'll take a position on the battlements where he has the best view of the Northern Portion of town. The young noble suspects that any attack will most likely come from that direction.

Grondar:
Ivy wrote:"I know, my friend. It's just sometimes not enough."
"I don't know that I agree with you, but I can understand how you can feel that way. I wish I had better answers for you. The truth is, not everyone is as effective or as capable in every situation. We all have limitations, and must do the best with what we have. I know that you know this, but sometimes we all need a reminder." Grondar gives the woman's shoulder a gentle squeeze.
Lyonessa wrote:Once everyone gathers around, Lyonessa will quickly tell of all they encountered, including the powerful orcs, and who they have rescued. She will tell where they split from Lord Validar and the others, and of their attack against the giants. All will be told in a simplified tale rather than one of her heroic ballads as she is certain that the others want the information quickly.
Grondar listens quietly, looking troubled at the mention of the orcish priests and champions. "Alas, it is too bad you were unable to destroy the giants' catapults before our winged friend was injured. At least you are back safely, and the others are still well. Having met up with Drakkimor and his companions will boost their power significantly. Plus, with a sizable group of the city's militia, they should be quite able to protect themselves."
Valena wrote:"Well met. I am Valena Feador of Ehlonna, a member of the city guard. Will the rest of your group be returning soon? I have discovered the entry points the enemy is using to infiltrate the city. If we can close these off the tide of the battle will turn dramatically."
Valena relates her news to the new arrivals. This brings a question to Grondar's mind, which he presents to Lyonessa and Acerion. "Do you know anything of Validar's plans? Does he intend to return here?"
Ivy wrote:"I can heal the damage done here this day." Speaking up, Ivy will add, "Everyone who is injured gather near us. I'll use the power of my Holy Weapon to cure all your ailments in one fell swoop."
Having taken a couple light grazes from the goblin arrows, Grondar will stand close with the others.
Argent wrote:The Invoker joins the others down in the courtyard. "Since you are here, Lord Acerion and Lyonessa, then perhaps the time has come for me to create the magical dwelling so that we may rest for the evening and regain our spells."
"That seems like a reasonable suggestion, Argent. If another attack occurs, we can be summoned from our sleep. If there's enough time, we might consider sleeping in shifts, at least to some extent. Perhaps an early group and a late group, with overlap in the middle."

Post Continued:

The hour is late in Corunglain and dark clouds loom overhead. The air turns noticeably colder and a few flakes of snow can be seen starting to fall. The snow sticks to the cold ground and patches of white begin to form everywhere.

But not all is gloomy. Lord Acerion and Lyonessa have returned to the Vesubian Gatehouse lifting the spirits of those within. Seeing the damage done to the pegasus, Ivy brings her Holy Weapon into play once more. She casts a Cure Light Wounds on the Kiss of Azrella and the mace extends the healing magic to all who are near. Grondar and Valena are completely healed, while Laucian and the Pegasus are almost back to full strength.

With the return of Acerion and Lyonessa, Argent begins to cast Leomund's Secure Shelter. The Invoker steps out into the courtyard and begins to weave her magic. Long minutes pass and Argent continues to cast the spell.

A short distance away at the West Gatehouse, Lord Validar and Chareos ride off towards the Vesubian Gatehouse. The snow has picked up in intensity and there's now at least an inch on the ground. Visibility had dropped dramatically to only a few dozen yards. Fortunately, the invading humanoids are just as hindered by the sudden snow storm as everyone else is.

The only noise is the howl of the whipping wind as the pair ride along. Visibility continues to drop as more snow piles up. Finally, the battlements of the Vesubian Gatehouse come into sight. The white flag flying over it is all but lost in the near whiteout conditions.

After getting the attention of those on guard duty, Orin and Po raise the portcullis giving the riders access to the courtyard. Many of the other Guardians are inside the courtyard as Lord Validar returns, including Lyonessa and Acerion. An unknown elf maiden is among them.

Argent is there and she's continuing to cast a spell in spite of the horrible conditions surrounding her. So great is her concentration that she pays little attention to the storm around her and snow covers her head and shoulders. Argent has been casting the shelter spell for over half an hour now.

Validar is introduced to Valena Feador of Ehlonna and she relates her tale and what she has discovered to the nobleman.

Finally, Argent finishes casting her spell and a stone cottage comes into existence in the courtyard. Exhausted from the effort, Argent collapses into the snow.

Unlike the shelters that Sherwood created, Argent's is much smaller. Primarily a single chamber nearly 15' square. Furniture is sparse, only eight beds, eight stools, and a large table with benches. There is a fireplace, but it is not lit. A fuel source will be required to start a fire and fire will be needed to provide heat in the Secure Shelter.

Casting a forty minute spell in near blizzard conditions is not fun! As noted above, firewood will be needed to heat up the place.

Those with weather-related skills will feel that this sudden snowstorm will not be letting up anytime soon. Only Corley and Arocken are away from the Vesubian Gatehouse.

A temporary end to hostilities...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar

By the time Lord Validar has completed instructions to Lord Corley and the Gatehouse is securely under control, snow has not only started to fall, but has managed to begin to stack up.

"It seems that something is going this city's way," Validar states looking at the rapidly falling snow. "This should put an end to the humanoids' attacks this night. At least we should be certain to hold our defenses and recover our strength."

Validar locates a cloak from one of the barracks, replacing the one he gave to the young woman earlier this night. As he and Chareos prepare to ride out, he signals with a wave back to Lord Corley.

The blowing snow has caused the visibility to shorten considerably. Fortunately, the way to the next gatehouse is relatively simple. The trip is longer due to the worsening conditions, but eventually, Validar and Chareos arrive at the Vesubian Gatehouse. After getting the guards' attention, Po and Orrin raise the porcullis and they enter once more.

Introductions to Valena are made and the group's exchange exploits for the past hours.

"Lord Corley is in command of the Western Gatehouse with Arocken and about 50 soldiers, as well as Drakkimor's adventuring band. With this sudden storm, there is little chance of any more humanoid attacks this night. Ranged weapons are extremely limited and I would be surprised if they have the drive to storm an enclosed and fully defended Gatehouse at this time."

"We will continue patrols and continue to man the walls as best as we can. The spellcasters need to get their rest, as we will be attacking the warehouses in the morning. Valena, do you have more information or can you draw a map of the surrounding areas of these warehouses you indicate?"

Validar looks over to see Argent continuing to cast her spell. "I assume that will be the magickal mansion, when she is finished? The spellcasters will use that structure for their rest. The remainder of us will take our rest in the barracks rooms. Lord Acerion will be in charge of maintaining watch cycles and such. I trust firewood has already been gathered and collected while we were away? It seems that it will be a cold night indeed." Validar looks to the sky with a look that is both dismay and relief. He had wanted to attack more of the humanoids and drive them further away, but the storm has done some of that work for him.

Lord Validar asks the healers if one of them could tend to Havok, his warhorse, who was wounded in the orc attack.

A moment later, Argent's stone cottage forms nearby. It is much smaller than the ones created by Sherwood or Kharyna, but it will be sufficent for their needs. Just then, Argent collapses into the snow.

Lord Validar will rush over to the fallen sorceress and lift her into his arms. He takes the woman into the shelter and lays her on one of the beds. "We need to get a fire started and have one or two of the refugees tend to her. Also food would be most welcome, for all of us."

When the attendants arrive, Lord Validar will say, "She is very important to our counter-attack in the morning. Make certain that she is well-rested and supplied with all that she requires."

Lord Validar will then walk the walls of the Gatehouse, reviewing the situation and speaking to the refugees who are manning the walls. He hopes his words deepen their resolve and strengthen their morale.

He will take some time to discuss with Lord Acerion what went wrong with the attack on the Fire Giants and what could be done to improve their next attempt at attacking them. He will also ask for everyone's opinions on suggestions for attacking the warehouses that seem to "spawn" the humanoids. He will suggest that Drakkimor's group will attack one location, while some of them attack another. He will also suggest that all the spellcasters prepare for battle with their spells. Offensive and area effect spells are important, as are defensive spells for those who need them.

So for the most part, we are hunkering down for the night. Lord Validar wants to be informed when the snow lets up, whether he is sleeping or not. Everyone should eat up and get their rest, looks like more combat in the morning.

Lyonessa:

Just as Lyonessa is finishing up, her owl familiar, Dusk, flies in and settles down on her shoulder. It coos contentedly to her. Dusk mentally relates completing its assigned task to the Songstress.

Lyonessa smiles and praises her friend for a job well done. She is fairly confident that Validar understood the message and now can only await his and the other's return.

"Yes it would have given much needed relief to those under siege," Lyonessa replies. "We can only hope the defenders saw our efforts and that it helped strengthen their courage and know they are not alone."

Valena relates her news to the new arrivals. This brings a question to Grondar's mind, which he presents to Lyonessa and Acerion. "Do you know anything of Validar's plans? Does he intend to return here?"

"It was his plan to have us meet back up with him after our attack and then return together here," Lyonessa offers.

Soon a snow begins to fall, increasing in intensity quickly. Lyonessa wonders if Lord Validar will travel in it or wait it out. The answer presents itself as he rides in with Chareos. She is a bit surprised the others are not with him and hope nothing dire has ocurred. He soon explains the situation and it makes perfect sense to her, leaving her relieved that nothing further should happen this night at least.

Lyonessa approaches Validar later to explain. "I hope that when Dusk found you that you were able to determine what happened," she says to him, indicating her familiar. "The pegasus was hit by a hurled boulder during our attack. We were only able to destroy one catapult. Lord Acerion was able to heal the pegasus enough to make a strained flight back to the shore and we walked here the rest of the way. I knew of no other way to let you know we wouldn't be meeting you as planned."

She watches Validar rush off to pick up the collapsed Argent, and quickly follows in case healing is needed. She will stay nearby until everything is determined to be okay before settling in to get some much needed sleep herself.

"Your companion managed to get the basics of his message across. Although we could not ascertain the exact situation, it was clear that the owl wanted to draw our attention here."

"One detail that you may not have been aware of that would be more helpful in communication in the future, should it be necessary is that my elven friend, Arocken, is a ranger and able to speak with animals of the forests. Should such a situation present itself in the future, perhaps Dusk can give more details to Arocken directly. In any case, all seems to be well. Although I would have liked to silence those catapults completely, you performed bravely and admirably."

She watches Validar rush off to pick up the collapsed Argent, and quickly follows in case healing is needed. She will stay nearby until everything is determined to be okay before settling in to get some much needed sleep herself.

"I do not believe she is injured. Just exhausted and cold. I will take her inside and have some of the women here attend her this evening."

Battle for Corunglain

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:

Grondar looks up at the sky as the snow starts to fall. He's never particularly liked snow; in fact, he doesn't like it at all. As far as he's concerned, it's one of the reasons sensible dwarves live underground.

Azrella's healing power washes over him, causing his disposition to improve. Looking down, he notes that the minor cuts he had sustained have closed and are quickly being replaced by smooth new skin as the associated stinging fades away. A smile crawls across his craggy features.

"Thank you, Ivy. That feels so much better."
Lyonessa wrote:"Yes it would have given much needed relief to those under siege," Lyonessa replies. "We can only hope the defenders saw our efforts and that it helped strengthen their courage and know they are not alone."
"I have no doubt that they did. They cannot help but notice the reduction of missiles from those catapults the giants were using. I know such a thing would cheer me greatly, were I in their position."
Lyonessa wrote:"It was his plan to have us meet back up with him after our attack and then return together here," Lyonessa offers.
"Hmm..." Grondar mumbles. "If that was his intent, then hopefully he won't wait too long for your return."

And it quickly is demonstrated that he did not, as Validar and Chareos ride back into the gatehouse moments later amidst the blowing snow. Grondar is surprised and concerned when he doesn't see Corley and Arocken return with them, but Validar explains their absence.
Validar wrote:"Lord Corley is in command of the Western Gatehouse with Arocken and about 50 soldiers, as well as Drakkimor's adventuring band. With this sudden storm, there is little chance of any more humanoid attacks this night. Ranged weapons are extremely limited and I would be surprised if they have the drive to storm an enclosed and fully defended Gatehouse at this time."
"It is good to know that our friends are well. It sounds like they should be able to hold that gatehouse effectively."

Validar gives instructions regarding resting for the night and manning the walls while Argent works on casting her spell. As he is not needed right at the moment, Grondar heads off to the pantry. It has just occurred to him that among the many abilities granted by the Revered Mother is that of Purifying Water once each day. Since the gatehouse's stores are minimal and have been sullied by the goblins, Grondar will try to ensure that they have enough clean water at least for a little while.

Thus, he isn't present when Argent collapses from the strain of spellcasting.

Argent:
Grondar wrote:"That seems like a reasonable suggestion, Argent. If another attack occurs, we can be summoned from our sleep. If there's enough time, we might consider sleeping in shifts, at least to some extent. Perhaps an early group and a late group, with overlap in the middle."
Argent will turn to face Grondar. "I admit that this is my first attempt with this particular spell, so I cannot be exactly sure of the precise perimeters of the magic. I do know that the exact duration cannot be known as it includes factors such as location where the dwelling is summoned. I can safely estimate that it will exist for a minimum of nine hours, more depending on how generous Tymora is feeling this day. My advice is that all spell casters enter the cottage within an hour after it appears to ensure they'll be able to get a full night in."

The Invoker notes the first snow flakes beginning to fall as she starts to cast the spell. This type of magic is unlike any she's ever attempted before and the casting time is forty minutes in length!

The snowfall dramatically increases and the winds rise, and what had been an easy spell to cast has become much more difficult. It's not a great concern as Argent has been trained to ignore any distractions while invoking magic. But the strain increases as the incredibly long casting time begins to seem like an eternity.

The snow continues to pile up. Argent's arms feel like lead and the strain can be heard in her voice. Naturally this is when Lord Validar and Chareos decide to return! Argent is unable to greet them properly as it would ruin the magic she is weaving.

The Invoker's concentration begins to waver and the world around her begins to go black. Only by sheer willpower does Argent finish the spell. The blackness claims her and she's unable to see the fruit of her efforts.

Validar wrote:A moment later, Argent's stone cottage forms nearby. It is much smaller than the ones created by Sherwood or Argent, but it will be sufficient for their needs.

Blissfully unaware of what is going on around her, Argent is oblivious to being picked up by the handsome nobleman and cannot feel his strong arms around her. (Boy, she wishes she could!)

Exhausted from her day's efforts, Argent will sleep until morning. Then she'll begin to memorize a new set of spells for the battles to come.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Valena:

A sense of relief comes over Valena as she sees the snow begin to fall. Knowing that such a thing is common in Corunglain, the Elfin follower of Ehlonna suspects that it will last for several hours. This will effectively end the fighting for the time being. The weary defenders of Corunglain will have a respite from fighting.

When Lord Validar arrives, Valena will introduce herself and explain what she has discovered.
"This is good news. At last I feel that we have a fighting chance of throwing back these invaders."
Validar wrote:"We will continue patrols and continue to man the walls as best as we can. The spellcasters need to get their rest, as we will be attacking the warehouses in the morning. Valena, do you have more information or can you draw a map of the surrounding areas of these warehouses you indicate?"
"More warehouses surround these two points of entry. The first warehouse is almost beside the South Gatehouse. I am told that the enemy was able to enter and overwhelm that Gatehouse before anyone really knew what was going on. The Second warehouse is also in South Town, but this one is close to the East Gatehouse."

"In both cases, wide streets surround the long warehouses. Travel by rooftops has allowed me to get close enough to see what is going on, but such a tactic will not work with a large force of men. In my estimation, we could advance on the warehouse near the South Gate relatively unnoticed. We can stick to the side streets and even pass through other warehouses to get close to the target."

Valena will continue to pace the battlements for a time, her bow at the ready. Once satisfied that the storm has forced everyone to take cover, she'll catch up on her sleep. Fortunately, like many elves, Valena needs only a few hours to feel refreshed.

Chareos

As the gray clouds roll in over Corunglain dispensing the beginnings of a snowstorm, Chareos looks to the sky hoping that the weather continues to hamper the humaniods' raids.

Validar soon arrives with a new cloak about him. He too looks to the snowfall.
"It seems that something is going this city's way," Validar states looking at the rapidly falling snow. "This should put an end to the humanoids' attacks this night. At least we should be certain to hold our defenses and recover our strength."
"It would appear so." Looking to the young noble, "Aye, though we should tread carefully while we journey so we do not lose our own strength."

The snowstorm proves to have a strong and stubborn will as the snow begins to accumulate quickly about the ground. Grabbing his robe he holds it closer to him as his numb hands begin to shake on the saddle pommel.

Soon the silloutte of the gatehouse walls is seen in the distance and he begins to try to get the attention of the guards. Feeling they are not listening or cannot heed their call, he takes up his sling and places a rock within. Swinging it above his head he tries aiming it above the balista's so they strike the wall behind it.

The snowcovered forms of both Po and Orrin come into sight and Validar and Chareos are soon let in. Once inside he dismounts and looks about as a new elvin face is among his comrades and introductions are soon made.
Valena soon makes her plight known, "More warehouses surround these two points of entry.

"These warehouses of which you speak: about how wide are these streets? If these streets are narrower then I hope perhaps we could limit their movement by a few web spells and have the archers set fire to it from afar?"

Chareos will then gather some firewood for Argent's shelter and attempt making a fire. Once that is complete he will ask Lord Validar, "Is there to be a rotation of the watch? I will need to turn in soon if my magicks will be of any use in tomorrow's battle. If there is nothing else that you require of me, then I should retire. "

Laucian
Ivy brings her Holy Weapon into play once more. She casts a Cure Light Wounds on the Kiss of Azrella and the mace extends the healing magic to all who are near. Grondar and Valena are completely healed, while Laucian and the Pegasus are almost back to full strength.
Laucian slowly feels his wounds begin to close as Ivy's healing washes over him. "Thank you Ivy. It was most kind of you."

Snow begins to slowly drift to the ground covering his weathered features. Turning to Valena at their fortune he will say," It would seem Tymora has not left the confines of the city after all, sister."

Soon Chareos and Validar return to them though strangely Lord Corley and Arocken are not among them. The news of the gatehouse are quickly revealed and his fears are quelled within.

After Validar and Valena exchange happenings Laucian will approach Lord Validar. "While you were away, I had a thought my friend. Perhaps it was merely an oversight, but you did not appoint any of those remaining within the walls to lead us. There are times I do not object to to self-governing oneself but perhaps if and when you decide to leave some of the Guardians behind perhaps it would be prudent to appoint a leader in your absense?" he will suggest without any harshness in his voice.

Laucian will walk the walls with his bow at the ready. When the time comes to rest he will do so, though before doing so he will go through his devotions to the Lady of the Forests. He will not partake in any food trusting his Ring of Sustance to fulfill him.

Hunkering down for the night...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

"Lord Corley is in command of the Western Gatehouse with Arocken and about 50 soldiers, as well as Drakkimor's adventuring band. With this sudden storm, there is little chance of any more humanoid attacks this night. Ranged weapons are extremely limited and I would be surprised if they have the drive to storm an enclosed and fully defended Gatehouse at this time."

Grondar - "It is good to know that our friends are well. It sounds like they should be able to hold that gatehouse effectively."

"I am confident of Lord Corley's determination and commitment, my dwarven friend. Even more so with this weather working in our favor for the evening."

Valena - "This is good news. At last I feel that we have a fighting chance of throwing back these invaders."

"We are making dents in their attack now and picking away at their attack. This is a good beginning considering we were not prepared for battle and had to fight our way into the city with a group of refugees in tow. Had this storm not come up, we would be launching another attack now to further weaken the humanoids' attack and blunt their advances."

"As it is now, we will prepare for an important battle in the morning which I hope will stem the tide. They should not be expecting muc, as the war has mostly gone the enemy's way. That should give us even more of an advantage. Combined with the fact that the regular troops do not seem to have their heart as deeply into this attack and likely feel they have already won, we may be able to quickly turn their morale quite sour as well."

"That is good news, Valena. We will be taking the warehouse near the South Gatehouse, while Drakkimor and his band will take the northern warehouse. We will need to leave behind some defenders for the Gatehouses we have already taken, but I would prefer to attack in waves anyway. This will maximize our attack capabilities and also give us a chance to follow up an attack with another should it be necessary."

"Valena will be one of the point people for our attack since she knows the way and where we are going. We also will need as many flyers available as possible."

Lord Acerion will have command of the watch and rotation. Spellcasters will be excluded from the rotation or be placed on the first rotation now, so that you may get proper rest. The battle tomorrow is much more vital than guard duty this night, especially with the snowfall. Check with Acerion to see if he needs you on the walls for another hour and if not, then rest well. We will find much glory in the morning."

"Indeed you are correct, my friend. I under-estimated the battle we entered and did not expect us to be gone for so long. That will not happen again. And yes, I did consider that no one was officially in charge. That was an oversight that will not happen again."

Validar will address the group. "Do we have any suggestions on how we should break up our group and plan our attack. I think it wise we have two or three groups. One will remain behind to guard the Gatehouses and the rest will be on attack. Then the group that is behind will be able to continue the attack when the others fall back and regroup."

"I have te beginnings of a plan, but am curious what the rest of you think."

Ivy:
"Thank you, Ivy. That feels so much better."

Laucian slowly feels his wounds begin to close as Ivy's healing washes over him. "Thank you Ivy. It was most kind of you."

Grondar and Valena are completely healed, while Laucian and the Pegasus are almost back to full strength.

Lord Validar asks the healers if one of them could tend to Havok, his warhorse, who was wounded in the orc attack.
"You are most welcomed my friends," Ivy will humbly say to those she has healed. However, it appears that it was not enough to bring everyone back to full strength. Both Lord Validar's warhorse and the pegasus are still wounded as well.

"One more time then. Gather near the steeds and I will use the Kiss of Azrella again and finish the job."

"I have the beginnings of a plan, but am curious what the rest of you think."
"I am not a strategist when it comes to this sort of thing," Ivy will state. "But I do not wish to be left behind again. I have the skills to engage these creatures and wish to do so."

When the time comes, Ivy will go to rest. Next morning she'll pray for a new set of spells to better help the refugees. Ivy will cast multiple Purify Food and Drink spells, coupled with several Create Food and Water spells.

Post Continued:

Most of the Guardians have returned to the Vesubian Gatehouse. Only Lord Corley and the elfin ranger Arocken are away, stationed at the West Gatehouse.

A sudden snowstorm has blown in and effectively shut down the city. All fighting has ceased as shelter and warmth are sought out by all. Visiblity plunges down to near zero and only the roar of the wind can be heard. The storm continues all through the night, blanketing the beleaguered city; its weary defenders getting a well-needed rest.

Morning arrives almost unnoticed due the dark clouds overhead. The amount of snowfall has dropped considerably, but it is still lightly coming down. Rough estimates place accumulation to around a foot of snow. There is considerable blowing and drifting, making it less in some places and more in others.

The priests are up and using the spells they prayed for the earlier. Food is created and purified and quickly consumed by those who are hungry.

Plans and tactics are discussed for the upcoming assault against the warehouse the goblinoids are using to enter the city near the Southern Gatehouse.

The sun finally breaks through the clouds and the snow has tapered off to nothing. The clouds break and large patches of blue sky can be seen, lifting the spirits of all.

A hunting horn is heard far off in the distance. It blows once and then again, drawing everyone's attention to the drawbridge. Looking out, a wondrous sight is seen: a long train of soldiers on foot has arrived! One of the men in front carries the flag of Corunglain!

Near the front of the precision is a woodsman with three wolves near him and a dwarven warrioress in plate mail mounted on a mule.

"Lower the drawbridge!", Valena cries out. "These people are known to me! The man with the wolves is Rathlar, the senior ranger of Corunglain along with his wolf companions. The dwarf is Aria Stonehand."

The bridge is lowered and the new arrivals enter into the Vesubian Gatehouse. Introductions are made and Valena will greet Rathlar's wolves with hugs and they in turn will lick her face.

Rathlar is a man of average height and looks. He has shaggy brown hair with a full beard. He wears leather armor and carries a longbow. A longsword and a shortsword hang from his belt. He's a man of few words.

Aria stands four feet tall even and carries a battleaxe. Her long dark brown hair is braided and she has a noticeable five-o'clock shadow on her cheeks.

Much like Valena, Rathlar was out on patrol when the attack came. He quickly realized that more defenders were going to be needed, and so traveled to Fort Runnels for reinforcements. He found Aria there and returned to Corunglain with one hundred and fifty soldiers. They would have arrived last night if not for the snowstorm. They were forced to take shelter less than a mile from the city and finished the trip this morning.

GM Notes:

Some reinforcements have arrived and virtually everyone has been healed. If you haven't done so already, post your spells for this new day. The long, long night is finally over with!

The arriving soldiers are tired, but have provisions with them. They would have no trouble in holding the Vesubian Gatehouse if you wish to commit all the Guardians to the next round of attacks.

A new morning...

Lord Validar -

"As it is now, we will prepare for an important battle in the morning which I hope will stem the tide. They should not be expecting much, as the war has mostly gone the enemy's way. That should give us even more of an advantage. Combined with the fact that the regular troops do not seem to have their heart as deeply into this attack and likely feel they have already won, we may be able to quickly turn their morale quite sour as well."

"I have noted that as well," Valena states. "It is as if they are waiting for something to happen. My guess is that they are waiting for some Orcish holy day before beginning the final assault. A swift, decisive victory on our part will go a long way to winning the day."

"That is what we all wish for, Valena. I am certain we will all be up to the task and I welcome your assistance in this coming attack. As for some Orcish holy day, I am afraid I have no knowledge of these humanoids' cultures. However, I was told by the Priestess of Heironious that we helped to rescue that the attackers were specifically awaiting the arrival of someone. There seems to be some level of revenge included in this attack beyond simply trying to conquer Corunglain. Likely Hextor's minions are behind this attack. As for who the awaited person is, we are uncertain, but they must not only be someone of some import, but also someone likely to come during a battle."

Ivy heals the people who have been wounded during the battles and with Lord Acerion in command of the Gatehouse defenses, the defenders wearily ready for a well-deserved night's sleep.

"I have the beginnings of a plan, but am curious what the rest of you think."

"I am not a strategist when it comes to this sort of thing," Ivy will state. "But I do not wish to be left behind again. I have the skills to engage these creatures and wish to do so."

"Indeed. We have all done our part so far, but I intend to have everyone in the coming battle. We may need to make our attacks in stages so that the Gatehouses remain under adequate defense."

"I would suggest that we archers take positions on top of the nearby warehouses to secure sniper positions. We can take locations opposite the entryways into the warehouse. Places that are hard for the enemy to reach and relatively safe for the archer. We'll take care of any guards and clear the area so that the main force can advance."

"That is a good idea. As most of our archers are quite stealthy, that plan should work quite well. I would like to get an early start to our battle, and while this snow is likely to drive in most of the humanoids, I would rather catch them unexpected as much as possible."

As the evening winds down and preparations have been made for sleep, Validar will walk the ramparts one last time before turning in. Acerion has set up a watch and the structure seems to be operating well. Validar looks out over the city and sees the fires still continuing to burn, but there are not as many as before and the echoes of battle have been replaced by the howling wind.

Lord Validar will remove his armor and turn in for the night, awaiting his turn at watch early in the morning.

When Validar is awakened by one of the runners, he retrieves his weapons and armor and takes a place at one of the towers. It is still dark, but the snow has let up, now just falling lightly with little wind. From the tower position, Validar can see that a sizeable amount of snow has fallen and blanketed the city. Everything is a white wonderland and all the fires are now out. New snow always has a way of erasing the stain of battle.

More activity begins to take place after some time as everyone begins to waken from the night's slumber. After a time, Validar's watch is completed and he is informed that breakfast is ready in the towers.

As he is about to head down to the courtyard, he hears a horn blow. It seems to be from the drawbridge side of the walls. In moments, Valena is on one of the towers and calls to have the gates opened. Validar arrives as the drawbridge is lowered and the portcullis raised. He is quite pleased to see the column of soldiers flying the flag of Corunglain.

More activity commences as the soldiers settle into the structure and take up positions. The Guardians and their new friends gather for a hot meal after introductions are made and plans for battle are made.

"Your presence is most happily received here, Rathlar and Aria. We have established a defensive position here and at the Western Gatehouse and we are planning a new counter-attack on the enemy today. The presence of these soldiers will make that even more effective as we can commit more of our number now to the attack."

"We will need to contact Lord Corley and the others at the Western Gatehouse and make them aware of the situation and our plans." Validar will search out Lyonessa if she is not here and ask if her familiar Dusk can carry a message to Arocken at the Western Gatehouse. Just simple enough to let them know that someone is coming and that we have received some reinforcements here.

Validar will then send Sherra to the Western Gatehouse once plans are completed to inform Drakkimor and their group of their plans and also to have Lord Corley and Arocken rejoin them. Some of the soldiers here will be stationed at the Western Gatehouse as well to better even up the defenders.

Lyonessa:

Lyonessa is grateful for a quiet night's rest, and even more when she finds there is food for everyone the next morning. She hadn't realized how tired she was from the demands and worries of combat that stretched well into the night. She seems to have acquired a hearty appetite as well even though it is not a normal occurance for her first thing in the morning.

She will add a soothing melody to the morning meal to help bring warmth to everyone's spirit. The food and sleep will no doubt have performed miracles, but a pleasant tune can also go a long way to help in healing and recovery. Soon Lord Validar finds her.

"I can definitely do that," Lyonessa replies and summons her familiar to her. She will tell Dusk to seek out the ranger Arocken where he found Validar the night before. She will put Validar's words plainly to Dusk, knowing that the ranger will hopefully be able to get good information from her familiar. She tells Dusk to first circle above before departing so he can see the new arrivals and their numbers to better tell Arocken.

Chareos

Waking from an decent night's sleep the young mage yawns and stretches. Rising to his feet he pats off his travel worn clothes and throws on his robe. Grabbing his gear he makes to the courtyard having heard the ravenous sounds from his stomach.

As he makes his way to the wavering smell of food a Horn is heard in the distance, The call of Valena soon answers the questions raising through his head.Lower the drawbridge!", Valena cries out. "These people are known to me! The man with the wolves is Rathlar, the senior ranger of Corunglain along with his wolf companions. The dwarf is Aria Stonehand."

"It seems we are to have guests," he says to no one in particular as the gates are opened and a column of soldiers assemble within the courtyard.

Chareos will move forward and greet those who have entered. "You are a sight to behold my friends." Those close by can see the joy in his face upon seeing reinforcements.

Having not much to add to what was already suggested the young mage will simply say, "I cannot see anything that was not already added. Except collapsing the building upon them as they flee into the street, perhaps with a fireball or two?"

Ivy wrote "One more time then. Gather near the steeds and I will use the Kiss of Azrella again and finish the job."

Laucian will do just that. Afterward thanking Ivy for her kindness.
Valena wrote-"I would suggest that we archers take positions on top of the nearby warehouses to secure sniper positions. We can take locations opposite the entryways into the warehouse. Places that are hard for the enemy to reach and relatively safe for the archer. We'll take care of any guards and clear the area so that the main force can advance."
"I would have to agree with Valena. With archers on the rooftops we can quickly remove their leadership potential as well. There is a spell that can be of use that is granted to my priesthood. With the Glyph of Warding I can set a trap so that no one could see it and set it to trigger as a certain target closes in on its position. I could use this spell to ward off an entry way or exit or to cover our comrades if a retreat is called for."

Rising early the Elfin ranger makes his way to the walls, stopping to smell the food that has been made. He begins to chant the words to his Create Food/Water spell for the refugees/soldiers. Afterward he will ask those around where Lord Validar is. The refugee points to the walls. Nodding his thanks he makes his way to the walls.

"Morning, my friend," he will say in greeting, as he readies his bow from his quiver. "There is food ready within the kitchens when you care for it."

A few moments later a horn is sounded and Valena soon shouts her news. Reinforcements have come and they carry Corunglain's colors. A smile soon forms upon his face.

Normally he would descend the walls and greet those whom have come but he will remain viligant on the wall until his shift of watch is completed.
Til Ehlonna's will be done

Battle for Corunglain

Grondar:
Argent wrote:Argent will turn to face Grondar.
"Hmm..." Grondar murmurs, considering. "Unfortunately, my knowledge of wizardly magic is limited. At least we should all be able to get a good night's sleep - as long as there are no attacks from without."

Returning from purifying more water, Grondar finds Argent's shelter already invoked and the beautiful sorceress asleep inside. Knowing that the spell's duration is limited, the dwarf heads for a bed right away. Despite his own snoring, he sleeps well - fortunately, it isn't so loud as to keep most other people awake all night.

Rising, Grondar performs his morning devotions, selecting the blessings from the Revered Mother that he will carry through the day. He immediately heads for the kitchens to Purify as much food and water as his patron's blessings will allow.

Hearing the horn from outside the gatehouse, Grondar emerges to greet the new arrivals. His eyes grow large and his heart begins to hammer when he sees that a female dwarf leads the new arrivals.

And what a woman!

The euphoria is ablated as the newly-arrived forces continue to enter through the gate. So many mouths to feed! How will they ever come up with enough food for everyone? He has one spell left that will help, but he fears it will be far too little.

Grondar moves forward to greet their reinforcements, particularly the one Valena introduces at Aria Stonehand. "Welcome, milady Stonehand," Grondar says with a bow. "Grondar Foehammer at your service. May I stable your mount for you? We are most encouraged by your arrival." He smiles shyly at the dwarven warrior-woman.

When the discussion of tactics arises, Grondar listens carefully. "I agree that about a third of the new troops should be sent to reinforce our friends at the West Gate. I believe about half of the rest should be able to hold here while we make our attack with the remainder."

Learning that Corley and Arocken will be rejoining them, Grondar pauses to include that in his analysis. "Archers on the surrounding buildings is a good idea, especially if they can get there without being noticed. Our stealthier members should be able to handle that. Sherra, Laucian, Lyonessa, Valena, Arocken and our new acquaintance Rathlar may be the best choices for this duty.

"The rest of us could divide up into two groups and enter the building from opposite ends. I would recommend Lords Validar and Acerion, Ivy, and Argent make up one group, with Lord Corley, Chareos, Aria and myself in the other.

"Unfortunately, we have little idea what we'll confront once we enter the building, so we'll need to try to be flexible and adapt as best we can as we go."

Valena:

If allowed, Valena will pet and pamper both Acerion's pegasus and Lyonessa's owl familiar. "I just love all of nature's creatures," she'll say with a smile on her face. Valena will be most gentle with these noble beings.
Validar wrote:"That is what we all wish for, Valena. I am certain we will all be up to the task and I welcome your assistance in this coming attack. As for some Orcish holy day, I am afraid I have no knowledge of these humanoids' cultures. However, I was told by the Priestess of Heironeous that we helped to rescue that the attackers were specifically awaiting the arrival of someone. There seems to be some level of revenge included in this attack beyond simply trying to conquer Corunglain. Likely Hextor's minions are behind this attack. As for who the awaited person is, we are uncertain, but they must not only be someone of some import, but also someone likely to come during a battle."
"That is very strange", the elfin follower of Ehlonna utters. "There's only a few possibilities that come to mind as to who this person could be and have it be someone who would rush to Corunglain in times of need. The mages Lord Sherwood, Lord Sharadin, and Lady Sallavarian come to mind, as does the Crown Prince himself."
Valena wrote:"That is a good idea. As most of our archers are quite stealthy, that plan should work quite well. I would like to get an early start to our battle, and while this snow is likely to drive in most of the humanoids, I would rather catch them unexpected as much as possible."
"It won't take long to get into position, that assure you Lord Validar."
Chareos wrote:Having not much to add to what was already suggested the young mage will simply say, "I cannot see anything that was not already added. Except collapsing the building upon them as they flee into the street, perhaps with a fireball or two?"
The mage's comments trigger a thought in Valena. "Collapsing the building might be exactly what we need to take out as many of the enemy as possible and seal of their entrance into the city. The tunnels underneath Corunglain are somewhat unstable. We routinely seal them off only to have new ones emerge. If we can collapse this new tunnel then we'd seal the enemy off from having their numbers replenished."

A bright smile comes to Valena's face when she sees her friends returning.

After saying her hello's to Rathlar and Aria, Valena gives the wolves a special hello and will play with them in the snow. They lick her face and Valena can't help but laugh and feel joy.

"This here is Silvermane," Valena will say pointing to one of the wolves. "She's the lady of the pack. The boys are Woodstalker and Brushrunner."

Argent

Argent:

Sometime early in the morning, Argent awakens feeling very refreshed. She notes the other mages and priests asleep within the small, stone dwelling. Being able to create the Magnificent Mansion that Jallarzi conjured can't come fast enough!

The Invoker wonders what transpired while she slumbered, but first things first. Her spell books are pulled out and a new round of spells are committed to memory.

It's still early when Argent puts on her winter clothing and goes out of the magical hut. Much to her surprise there's a terrific amount of snow on the ground. It just makes her feel even colder inside. A hot meal is sought out and then Argent will try to find out what's going on now.

Argent spots Lord Validar pacing the battlements and will go and join him.

"Good morning, Milord. It seems that I missed out on some things. At least you and the others returned safely. I have already replenished my spells and am ready for whatever challenge awaits us on this new day. Hopefully, it won't involve me pretending to be an archer again."

Argent will watch from the battlements when Rathlar, Aria, and the more troops arrive. That alone should guarantee no more bowmanship in the Invoker's immediate future.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Acerion:

Ivy saw the elves run off to investigate something, but didn't know what. When she hears Laucian call out, Ivy will come running. She reaches the courtyard as they enter. Ivy wants to run up to Acerion to make sure he's alright and to hold him, but fights off the urge for such a public display of affection.

"You're safe! Azrella be praised! What has transpired? Why did you return this way?"

Acerion will find a moment to share with Ivy before needing to seek out Validar. "I am sure you have heard much of Lyonessa's retelling of our encounters, but it has been a day of great victories. Although I do wish we had been completely successful in thwarting the Giants' attack, but tomorrow is another day. I again find myself once more wishing we had more time for each other," Acerion confides as he takes her hand and lowers his head to kiss it. "I at least kept my promise to return," he will say with a small smile.

Once Acerion and Lyonessa are within the walls Laucian will ask them both, "How did the battle fare..." He asks then sees the wounded pegasus, "If you would allow me I can see to your Pegasus' wounds?"

If Acerion allows him Laucian will begin seeing to Acerion's mount.

"Of course, Laucian," Acerion replies. "I have exhausted nearly all of my healing for this day." However, it would seem that Ivy is more than willing to offer healing to all in need. Acerion smiles her way as she prepares.

He will take some time to discuss with Lord Acerion what went wrong with the attack on the Fire Giants and what could be done to improve their next attempt at attacking them.

When he finds Validar, he learns that Lyonessa has already explained all that had occurred. Seeing little that was missing from her telling of events, Acerion only adds, "Something with better range or simply more of us would have resulted in a different outcome. As it was, their strength is mighty indeed and they even threatened us when we landed on the shoreline."

Acerion nods at hearing Validar's words and sets up a watch and rotation. He takes the biggest block of time for himself, finding the snow-covered night to be one he wants to be a part of. He also knows that many of their group are exhausted and wants to offer as much sleep to all as possible. He will assign the non-spellcasters as well the more capable of the refugees in overlapping shifts and make sure all points of entry are covered.

Acerion raises his axe to his friend and fellow lord upon seeing Validar preparing to retire. The paladin's thoughts are a heady mix of memories, emotions and formulating plans, but he remains vigilant through his assigned watch. The night however, turns out to be peaceful, and Acerion finally retires after making sure everything is in place. He falls asleep quickly and soundly, sleeping through the arrival of the others. Eventually he will awaken and scrounge up a small meal, getting introduced to the others along the way.

Acerion listens to Grondar's thoughts and they seem sound. He has caught a few other suggestions as he has been walking about and his thoughts are yet to be uncluttered. He therefore bides his time a bit to see what some of the others say before speaking out.

If allowed, Valena will pet and pamper both Acerion's pegasus and Lyonessa's owl familiar. "I just love all of nature's creatures," she'll say with a smile on her face. Valena will be most gentle with these noble beings.

"Of course, Valena. I have no doubt you will be well recieved," Acerion will say as he notices the elven woman's interest and desire to approach his pegasus.

Morning plans of attack...

The mages Lord Sherwood, Lord Sharadin, and Lady Sallavarian come to mind, as does the Crown Prince himself."

"Indeed, all those same individuals came to my mind as well. I do not know why they desire this person to be here, but it certainly is not for anything good. Considering the plans they have made and already executed, there is likely to be a severe trap in place. We cannot allow this to happen. We must do all we can to defeat the enemy before their target arrives and is taken unawares."

"I seem to have underestimated our foe again, it appears. We will need a more organized and serious attack to drive away the Fire Giants. In any case, the two of you were quite valiant in your attack and even silencing one catapult was certainly welcomed by the fortress' defenders."

The next morning...

"We did what we were able. It was not as much as I had hoped, but we saved many and we gave the humanoids a defeat. I am certain that this morning will be a very important battle and your presence will be most helpful. This should be a battle that fits your skills very well."

"It is a good morning indeed, my elven friend. It is a morning that will see the tide of evil in this city beaten back. It is a morning which hints of the glory to come. None of which will happen on an empty stomach," he says with a grin. "Once everyone is organized, we will prepare for battle." Validar claps the ranger on his shoulder as he walks past. A moment later the horn announcing the reinforcements sounds off.

"I can definitely do that," Lyonessa replies and summons her familiar to her. She will tell Dusk to seek out the ranger Arocken where he found Validar the night before.

"Very good," Lord Validar will respond. "This way they will be prepared and ready this morning for what is to come."

"That is a good idea. As most of our archers are quite stealthy, that plan should work quite well. I would like to get an early start to our battle, and while this snow is likely to drive in most of the humanoids, I would rather catch them unexpected as much as possible."

"It won't take long to get into position, that assure you Lord Validar."

"Even better. When all are ready, the archers will move out on groups of two or three."

Chareos - Having not much to add to what was already suggested the young mage will simply say, "I cannot see anything that was not already added. Except collapsing the building upon them as they flee into the street, perhaps with a fireball or two?"

"Collapsing the building is an option should it come to that. Certainly the sacrifice of a few buildings is nothing compared to saving the city from further attacks."

"While collapsing the building may be useful, I would rather collapse the tunnel entrance if possible. In this way the entrance will be sealed and not simply blocked."

Laucian - "I would have to agree with Valena.

"That is an interesting addition. Perhaps you can cast it near to the exit so that it triggers in response to their exiting. I would like to think offensively here rather than making plans should we falter in our attack."

When the discussion of tactics arises, Grondar listens carefully. "I agree that about a third of the new troops should be sent to reinforce our friends at the West Gate. I believe about half of the rest should be able to hold here while we make our attack with the remainder."

"We shall reinforce the soldiers at the Western Gatehouse, but my intention was to leave the soldiers behind in this attack. I do not wish to risk the lives of the precious few defenders we currently have organized. Especially when we should be able to win this battle ourselves. Should be be unable to satisfy the task, then a few squads of soldiers should not make much difference I should think. I would prefer to have them available for other duties."

"When Sherra is ready, she will head to the Western Gatehouse to inform Drakkimor and his group of our plans and give them the location of the other warehouse. If we can coordinate our attacks it should throw the humanoids into chaos and severely weaken their morale. Then Lord CorleyArocken and Sherra can return here, while the soliders move out to reinforce that Gatehouse."

"Unfortunately, we have little idea what we'll confront once we enter the building, so we'll need to try to be flexible and adapt as best we can as we go."

"I agree with your choices with one small exchange: Lord Corley and Lord Acerion. It will better balance the fighting skills and the healing abilities. Ivy has strong healing skills."

"We do not know what we will encounter once we enter. The plan will be to hit the warehouse from both sides at once after an initial barrage of spells and ranged weapons. If there are humanoids who survive the opening attack outside, we should be able to clean them up. Be aware that the enemy has some strong individuals in their leadership. Target any leaders above any other targets at all times."

Any particular reason for putting Valena in charge of the archers rather than Laucian or Sherra? We don't really know Valena as we have just met her, and Laucian and Sherra have proven their skills and worth to our group many times.

Lord Validar -

"That is very strange", the elfin follower of Ehlonna utters. "There's only a few possibilities that come to mind as to who this person could be and have it be someone who would rush to Corunglain in times of need. The mages Lord Sherwood, Lord Sharadin, and Lady Sallavarian come to mind, as does the Crown Prince himself."

We must do all we can to defeat the enemy before their target arrives and is taken unawares."

Grondar considers the question for a moment and a disturbing possibility occurs to him. "I believe there is another possibility: If they are waiting for someone, it might also be some powerful leader or force that would assist them, but hasn't arrived yet."

Validar considers for a moment. "If I remember the words of Crysania correctly, the one called Opikus said to not let the siege end too soon. I do not think they are waiting for someone to arrive on their side of the battle as they are very confident they have already won. There also seemed to be talk of revenge and of the death of his mother. All of this lead to the implication and impression that they were waiting for someone on our side."

"While collapsing the building may be useful, I would rather collapse the tunnel entrance if possible. In this way the entrance will be sealed and not simply blocked."

"I believe we would be best served by doing both, if possible. Collapse the tunnel, then collapse the building on top to make it harder for them to dig out."

"In the short term, you are likely correct. We will need a long term answer, but that is something for the city leaders to decide, so this cannot be exploited in the future."

"As you wish. I would not have assumed that trained soldiers would be so ineffectual as to not be a significant force in our battle, but you have more experience with human troops than I."

"It is not a matter of our troops being ineffectual. It is simply a matter of their proper use. I am certain that these 50 soldiers we would take with us would fight and die with every ounce of courage and valor they possess. However, I am also certain that many of the soldiers would be killed in the attack and their sacrifice is simply not needed. If there are truly hordes of these humanoids, then were something to go unexpected, and I am certain that it might, we could lose them all in a battle and for nothing that we ourselves could not accomplish. They are better served as defenders and as part of a larger force in a future attack. I do not believe that these attacks will end the battle. More fighting will come and we will need these men, both for those attacks and defending more Gatehouses."

"I agree with your choices with one small exchange: Lord Corley and Lord Acerion. It will better balance the fighting skills and the healing abilities. Ivy has strong healing skills."

"That is a good point. I hadn't taken the effect of Ivy's enchanted mace properly into account."

"Also Lord Corley and myself would both have regenerative abilities as well, making this even more balanced. Lord Acerion has other abilities as well that may prove helpful in your group."

Any particular reason for putting Valena in charge of the archers rather than Laucian or Sherra? We don't really know Valena as we have just met her, and Laucian and Sherra have proven their skills and worth to our group many times.

My thinking was that the archers were going to be a much looser group being spread out amongst the buildings for the sniper attacks and didn't really need a 'strict' leader. Valena knows the area where they are going and the city around the warehouse, so she can direct them where they need to go. Made the most sense to me. In a different situation I would have chosen Laucian as you mention.

Ivy

Ivy:
Acerion will find a moment to share with Ivy before needing to seek out Validar. "I am sure you have heard much of Lyonessa's retelling of our encounters, but it has been a day of great victories. Although I do wish we had been completely successful in thwarting the Giants' attack, but tomorrow is another day. I again find myself once more wishing we had more time for each other," Acerion confides as he takes her hand and lowers his head to kiss it. "I at least kept my promise to return," he will say with a small smile.
Ivy will grasp on to Lord Acerion's hand with almost a death grip and then hold it tight to her body. "Sometimes I fear that we will never find time for ourselves. It seems we go from one desperate situation to another. I find myself yearning for peace instead of constant battle."

Ivy returns the affection and will gently kiss Acerion's hand as she holds it to her body.

After Argent creates her magical dwelling, Ivy will turn in for the evening. Sleep does not come easy for the priestess, but eventually it does.

Come the morning, Ivy will say her prayers and renew her magicks. Most of her spells go to purifying the food we found the day before and creating new. She'll make sure to bring some food to Lord Acerion, where ever he may be in the complex.

Ivy has nothing further to add as far as the fighting goes. "I do have another Silence spell available. Perhaps Lord Corley would like to have it cast upon him? I can also Bless those in our unit, with the exception of Lord Validar of course."

A question does come to mind though. "How are we to reach the battle? On foot or on horseback?"

GM Notes:

Rathlar:

"Your presence is most happily received here, Rathlar and Aria. We have established a defensive position here and at the Western Gatehouse and we are planning a new counter-attack on the enemy today. The presence of these soldiers will make that even more effective as we can commit more of our number now to the attack."
Introductions will need to made as the pair have no idea who you people are. They are both happy for your assistance. Rathlar has no great desire to lead men, so having the group's Lords direct the soldiers is fine with him. Rath is fine with the plan of attack and his role in it.

Aria Stonehand:
Grondar moves forward to greet their reinforcements, particularly the one Valena introduces at Aria Stonehand. "Welcome, milady Stonehand," Grondar says with a bow. "Grondar Foehammer at your service. May I stable your mount for you? We are most encouraged by your arrival." He smiles shyly at the dwarven warrior-woman.
"Well met, Grondar Foehammer," Aria will say as she drops from her mule. "We're pleased that we actually had something to come back to. Oh, thank you for caring for Pebbles. He can be a cantankerous beast. Tell me how you came to be in this place?"

GM Comments:

Validar beat me to the punch on some of the recently asked questions concerning Opikus and his goals. I will add that it probably would have helped if it was known that most of the upper ruling body in Corunglain is now gone. Both Valena and Rathlar would have been keen on making contact with their superiors.
Laucian - "I would have to agree with Valena.
Base on offline discussions, Laucian appears to have abandoned this idea due to the spell logistics. I should get a reference page for the care and feeding of Glyphs put together for everyone's reference.

Again, Validar beat me to the punch on this one. I will add that Lyonessa does not have any ranged attacks at this time. Not sure how she got put into this group.

Weeks to come:

Business wise, things really hit the fan starting in May. My availability is going to be limited for at least the first 2 weeks of the month. Will be doing 7 days a week and long hours each day. I'll try to keep up with the GM aspects of the posts and will probably let the individual characters slide during this time. Just have to play it by ear.
Try it and find out!

Battle for Corunglain

"Ah, okay. I knew of your healing gift, but was not aware that Corley shared it. I'm afraid I haven't been fastidious in keeping track of these things."

"Pebbles, a fine name, that," Grondar says with a grin. "I would be happy to tell you if you would care to walk with me." Taking Pebbles reigns, he leads the mule toward the stables.

"Some weeks ago now, Lord Sherwood recruited me to join a band of adventurers he and Lord Validar over there," he gestures, "were assembling. With the church's blessing, I agreed and made the trip to Pyris where we all met. We have been travelling and fighting pretty much ever since.

"And you, milady?"

Sometime after his talk with Aria concludes, Grondar will introduce himself to the other newcomer. Looking up at the human, he offers a hand. "Greetings, Rathlar. I am Grondar Foehammer. I am very pleased to meet you and to see the reinforcement you have brought. They will help greatly in the battle to free this city."

Admittedly, I was uncertain what Lyonessa's abilities were exactly with regard to combat. Perhaps we should add her and Po to the two groups which will be entering the warehouse.

More work means more money - which is a good thing! Do what we need to do, I'm sure you'll continue to give the game what time you can. A slowdown won't really hurt anything.

Lord Validar -

Some comments on various recent notes:

Introductions will need to made as the pair have no idea who you people are.

This was already done in a previous post in quick text form. So figured no need to do so again as these are just NPCs.
The bridge is lowered and the new arrivals enter into the Vesubian Gatehouse. Introductions are made and Valena will greet Rathlar's wolves with hugs and they in turn will lick her face.

I assumed that when it was written that stories were exchanged that everyone who was present heard all these details. Now it is possible that Grondar was not present and Aria and Rathlar both came after this would have been told, but they did not mention anything about contacting superiors, so it wouldn't have been brought up as yet.

Base on offline discussions, Laucian appears to have abandoned this idea due to the spell logistics. I should get a reference page for the care and feeding of Glyphs put together for everyone's reference.

Not a problem. We will forget about that part for this combat. No idea about the specifics or needs of Glyphs myself even as a player.

Well, Lyonessa does still have Chareos wand, which is a ranged attack and she has spells, so there is no reason she needs to be excluded from this group. There is also nothing to say this group will not end up inn close combat at some time. I think she is fine in this group.

Admittedly, I was uncertain what Lyonessa's abilities were exactly with regard to combat. Perhaps we should add her and Po to the two groups which will be entering the warehouse.

As above, we can leave Lyonessa in the archer group and I was thinking to leave Po behind to help guard the Gatehouse. Give the poor kid a break for one battle.

Lord Validar -

Since it was not clear that Validar told everyone what happened at the sacrifice and what Crysania told him (although I was going on the fact that it was said to those present), we will assume that it was not mentioned.

"I was not aware of that," Grondar says with a shrug. "Not having been there, I wasn't aware of what she had said, or perhaps I missed it in someone's retelling while I was doing other things."

"That may be. But it is important enough for everyone to have this knowledge."

Lord Validar will address everyone present about what he learned from Crysania regarding the behind the scenes events. "The city has few leaders left which I am certain has contributed to the ease with which the humanoids have taken so much of it, so quickly and so easily. There was a celebration at the Duke's Fortress which had all the nobility here in attendance and also many of the adventurers here."

"The enemy managed to infiltrate this feast and drug all of those in attendance and take them away. Crysania and Drakkimor were given to Dek the Orc leader to be sacrificed to their foul god. Fortunately, we managed to interrupt that."

"Without our presence, it is likely that the city will fall into chaos. There are no major leaders and we have no idea who may be the highest ranking noble within the city at the moment. All we can try to do is rally as many troops as possible and defeat as many of the enemy as we can. Eventually the tide will turn, but as for the kidnapped and captured nobles, it appears we have no idea where they may currently be. It may be another quest for our illustrious band."

"Opikus is a mage in a crystal tower who seemed to be behind the attacks or at least greatly assisting in them. He was directly the leader of the Hextorites and the orcs and others based on what Crysania stated. He is the one who claimed revenge and likely has the nobles as well. If they are waiting for someone from the kingdom to arrive, likely there is a potent trap awaiting them. If we had some way to contact them, we could warn them, but unless someone has a spell or magic item to do so, then we can only try to thwart their evil plans from here."

"I do not think that the target is Sherwood. He is a powerful force in the kingdom, but certainly not one of the same import as the Crown Prince or even Lord Sharadin. Likely it is one of them that is expected."

"So as you all can see, we are of vital importance to not only the safety of this city's inhabitants, but also the whereabouts of the taken nobles and also the safety of this individual they seek to trap. I believe that we will have more battles this day than any other in any of our lives."

"I have seen fewer dwarven soldiers turn the course of a battle, and was just surprised that you seemed to believe that these could not make a difference. Still, it is your call as leader."

"They may be able to make a difference, but I have no desire to squander them, when we have so few. If the talk of the numbers here is true, then 50 men is a miniscule amount in an attack, but very precious in defense. We need every living soldier we can get for upcoming attacks."

As for the posting, of course, we'll make due with what we've got. Time is tight here too and while we'd always love to have the game move along faster, life sometimes gets in the way.
