New Frontiers #49

Gatehouse:

The riders have departed the Gatehouse on their mission to rescue the sacrifice victims. In the process of the riders departing, several orcs slipped in to the Gatehouse while the gates were up. They rush Grondar and Ivy!

The priests greet the orcs with weapons at the ready. Ivy lands one blow each on two orcs with her holy mace, dropping both. Truthgiver downs one of the attackers. Grondar drops his second orc before Ivy can assist him.

With the courtyard cleared, the priests rush to join their companions up on the battlements after closing the inner gate.

Arrows and bolts fly fast and furious up on the battlements. Argent misses badly on her first few attempts to hit an enemy, but later manages to hit a few orcs.

Sherra and Laucian rain down a steady stream of arrows. Sherra hits 3 out of every four targets, while Laucian does not miss.

Po tries to help with his shortbow, but his skill with the weapon is poor. He only hits as often as Argent.

Several refuges help on the battlements as well. Orin fires the ballista on top of the cell block tower while two boys re-arm the weapon. Some of the refugees manage to hit a target, but most miss.

The battlements provide substantial defense against enemy archery. Only Po and Laucian take hits, but those are minor. However, one of the refugees was killed by arrow fire.

Grondar joins the archers and fires his own crossbow into the throng below. Once a bolt is fired, the bow re-cocks itself on its own, greatly speeding up the amount of time between shots.

The group of humanoids begins to thin out down below once more. More than twenty of their number has fallen to missile fire so far.

Those with sharp eyes will note that someone is unexpectedly firing on the orcs and goblins from outside the Gatehouse! The arrows are coming from a secluded spot between nearby buildings. Three arrows are fired out in the amount of time most others can only fire two and all three hit a separate orc slaying them.

The next round three more arrows are fired from the shadows and two take out orcs. Between the efforts of this mystery archer and those in the Gatehouse, the immediate area has been cleared once more.

A figure moves out of the shadows and tentatively comes closer. Those with sharper sight came make out that it is a blonde-haired elven woman wearing the garb of a woodsperson. She holds a shortbow before her that is ready to be fired.

"I am Valena Feador of Ehlonna!", the woman calls out. "Who holds the battlements of the Vesubian Gatehouse?"

Park:

The riders have reached the park in the Northtown District and are working to clear the area of Orcs.

Lord Acerion directs his Pegasus forward and dives toward the leaders of the orcs.

Arocken fires the Arrow of Silence at the orc leaders and misses them. The arrow sails past them and lands in the ground.

Chareos slows his charge enough so that he can safely cast Lightning Bolt. The bolt zips forward towards a group of orcs on the outside of the main group. At least seven of them fall from the electrical discharge.

As the pegasus nears the ground, Lord Acerion drops off his steed! He lands with a small crash, but is quickly on his feet. Out of the corner of his eye, a familiar color scheme is noted. Daring a look, he spots a human female amongst the sacrifices wearing tattered dark blue robes with silver trim. The colors of Heironeous!

Acerion is greeted by one of the orcs in plate mail-- the one that still has both eyes. The orc lashes out with a morning star and strikes the paladin solidly. Acerion, his battle axe glowing with power, retaliates and lands his own powerful strike! Unlike the orcs battled previously, this one does not go down! It flashes its jagged teeth at Acerion.

"Know you human", the orc croaks in bad common, "I Urko the Humancrusher!"

Urko strikes again with his morning star, forcing Lord Acerion back from the power of the blow.

Lords Validar and Corley charge onto the scene on their warhorses. More orcs were plowed over along the way. Validar closes in on the head priest of the orcs, but the other priest moves to intercept him. This second priest deftly avoids Validar's sword slash. The nobleman continues on past the orcs on Havoc.

Lord Corley slows his approach and dismounts from his warhorse. Leaving his mace with the horse, Corley draws his massive two-handed sword and rushes the head orc.

The leader of the orcs has picked up chanting once more. He stands in the walkway with his arms raised upward. As he chants, a tangible aura of divine energy comes over the orc. Those within thirty feet of the priest can't help but feel it.

A wave of fear washes over Lords Acerion and Corley. Acerion fights back the panic and overcomes it, but Corley is not as fortunate. The young noble unexpectedly turns and runs away in fear!

Overhead, Lyonessa struggles to control the pegasus. Without any riding gear or bit and bridle to control the animal, she's only a passenger. She gently takes ahold of the pegasus' mane with one hand for support. With the other she holds the Wand of Lightning.

After dropping Acerion off, the pegasus heads skyward once more avoiding missiles tossed its way. The winged stallion banks and flies back to the battle once more. Lyonessa can see the divine energy gather about the head orc, but is far enough away to be unaffected by it.

Using the wand once more, Lyonessa fires another lightning bolt at a crowd of orcs. The bolt takes out at least eight of them.

Having recovered from their initial shock, the regular orcs rush to defend their leaders. Orcs close in on Lord Validar, while others rush towards Arocken and Chareos who are a bit further away. These regular orcs do not attempt to help Urko in his battle against Acerion.

Laucian
Aiming his Hunter's bow he begins firing his bow as fast and as accurately as he can. If he was not mistaken all of his arrows struck their targets. As the barrage of arrows commences Laucian takes a glancing arrow across his shoulder.

Looking quickly it is minor at best, muttering under his breath he says, "You will pay for that." Nocking another arrow he aims at the orc that hit him and puts an arrow to its chest.

As the humaniods' number drastically falls by the volleys, arrows come streaking out of an alleyway. In record time 3 arrows are sent at different targets! More so all three die from the well placed shafts.
He looks closer as the shadowy figure fires constantly into the Orc ranks. As the skrimish soon ends the shadowy figure moves forward.
A figure moves out of the shadows and tentatively comes closer. Those with sharper sight came make out that it is a blonde haired elven woman wearing the garb of a woodsperson. She holds a shortbow before her that is ready to be fired.
As his eyes focus in on the tenative ally he knocks an arrow and looks for a target. The blonde elf soon walks into the light. Recognizing the colors of a woodsmen he relaxes his bowstring hand. A glitter of metal around her neck catches his eye. Returning his bow to his quiver he will approach the wall for a better look.
"I am Valena Feador of Ehlonna!", the woman calls out. "Who holds the battlements of the Vesubian Gatehouse?"
"Be at ease Valena Feador of Ehlonna, for the Guardians of Light reside in these walls. I swear no harm will come of you. I am Laucian Nailo of Clan Grundalf and a fellow follower of the Lady of the Forests!"

He will send for a rope and tie the end off at his end dropping it to the ground below. "Make haste. There may be more lurking about." If there is any doubt within Valena's eyes he will remove his holy symbol and dangle it so she may see he speaks the truth.

Acerion, his battle axe glowing with power, retaliates and lands his own powerful strike! Unlike the orcs battled previously, this one does not go down! It flashes its jagged teeth at Acerion.

The sight of a follower of Heironeous does little to set Acerion at ease. All of these people suffer and he means to strike a blow for each of those who could not in their own defense. His first such blow bites into the orc, but surprisingly the humanoid remains standing and Acerion is unable to determine the damage his blow dealt. "So I see they do grow some of your kind strong after all," the paladin comments.

"Know you human", the orc croaks in bad common, "I Urko the Humancrusher!"

Urko strikes again with his morning star, forcing Lord Acerion back from the power of the blow.

Acerion does his best to ignore the blow and regain his footing. Turning his gaze to the orc, he replies, "Then that is a shame that you do not face a human!"

With those words, Acerion re-enters the fray, bringing his axe down with all his might seeking to send Urko to the orc's foul deity himself.

The young noble unexpectedly turns runs away in fear!

Acerion feels the wave of unnatural fear tug and prod at him, looking to sink its claws into him and cause him to succumb to its power. The paladin will have none of it however, for his determination is too strong and his faith too powerful for some lesser sorcery to affect him.

Ivy:
The priests greet the orcs with weapons at the ready. Ivy lands one blow each on two orcs with her holy mace, dropping both. Truthgiver downs one of the attackers. Grondar drops his second orc before Ivy can assist him.
Anger surges through Ivy and she drops two of the invaders before she even realizes that they are down. Gathering her wits about her, Ivy steps over to help Grondar but finds her worries unfounded. The dwarf has dispatched the other two orcs.

"We'd best get up on the battlements with the others," Ivy says as she rushes to join the other defenders.

Once on the battlements, Ivy watches as the bowmen work to defend the Gatehouse aiding them where she can. She's not permitted to use the weapons being employed by them, forcing her to be a spectator.

With grim satisfaction Ivy watches as the number of enemy attackers drop. Unexpectedly there seems to be an ally of ours outside the gates. Someone who is also firing upon the orcs! Seeing someone come forward, Ivy rushes closer.
"I am Valena Feador of Ehlonna!", the woman calls out. "Who holds the battlements of the Vesubian Gatehouse?"

"Be at ease Valena Feador of Ehlonna, for the Guardians of Light reside in these walls. I swear no harm will come of you. I am Laucian Nailo of Clan Grunalf and a fellow follower of the Lady of the Forests!"

He will send for a rope and tie the end off at his end dropping it to the ground below. "Make haste, There may be more lurking about." If there is any doubt within Valena's eyes he will remove his holy symbol and dangle it so she may see he speaks the truth.
Ivy is surprised to hear that it is an elfin woman, but grateful nonetheless. "At least it will be one more to defend these walls."

Lord Validar wrote:"Our family histories are to be proud of regardless of our station or heritage. Each of us makes our own mark on the world."
"That is true, but some family histories are re-told in the songs of bards, while others are not. Perhaps my efforts will help elevate my own family's status somewhat. Only time will tell."
Validar wrote:"I am concerned for the well being of all our comrades, Argent. And you have certainly contributed greatly to our cause this night. But any additional assistance will be welcomed. Our goal this night is to strike as hard and as many times as we can and to make our main assault on the enemy tomorrow."
"Yes, of course," Argent will say, sounding as if she's somewhat disappointed. "I'll do what I can to assist the others staying here in the gatehouse."
Arrows and bolts fly fast and furious up on the battlements. Argent misses badly on her first few attempts to hit an enemy, but later manages to hit a few orcs.
The Invoker is unsurprised at her efforts at archery. Weapons training was not something she's ever really sought out and it shows. Finally a few of her arrows do hit a target, boosting her confidence and the number of foes begins to drop dramatically.

Seeing someone approaching the walls, Argent moves closer to hear what is being said.
"I am Valena Feador of Ehlonna!", the woman calls out. "Who holds the battlements of the Vesubian Gatehouse?"

"Hold a moment!", Argent will call out. "How can you be sure that she is what she appears to be? It could be a trick to get her inside the Gatehouse."

Corley

Post by Corley »

Corley:
Lord Validar will clap his friend on the shoulder, his metal gauntlet ringing against the shoulder plate of Lord Corley's armored form. "No need to be embarrassed, my friend. We all perform upon a stage already: the stage of life. But to be certain, I place even more faith in your sword arm than in your tongue."
"You are a very wise man, my friend. Come, let us begin this mission of mercy!"

Reaching the park, Lord Corley will ride after Lord Validar towards the leaders of this travesty. Storing his mace once more, Corley will slow his steed and then drop off the warhorse, giving him a slap to send him out of harm's way. Drawing his greatsword, Lord Corley will rush to engage one of the three main orcs.
A wave of fear washes over Lords Acerion and Corley. Acerion fights back the panic and overcomes it, but Corley is not as fortunate. The young noble unexpectedly turns runs away in fear!
An unexpected display of power is unleashed before Corley's eyes and unnatural fear claws its way into his brain! Possessed by this unreasoning fear, Corley turns and flees!

Valena Feador

Post by Valena Feador »

Valena:

Staying to the shadows Valena made her way across Southtown toward the Vesubian Gatehouse. A white flag was now flying there where one had not been seen before. It had to be investigated.

Nearing the Gatehouse Valena picked up the sounds of fighting. She caught a glimpse of riders departing the Gatehouse in spite of a small group of orcs attacking. Bowmen fired their weapons from the battlements in an effort to bring these hated beings down.

Drawing closer, Valena could make out numerous humans on the battlements. While being unsure just how they got there, they still needed assistance. Reaching a position where she could do the most damage, Valena drew her shortbow and opened fire.

The orcs went down in quick succession and the immediate area was momentarily cleared. Seizing this opening, Valena drew closer.

"Be at ease Valena Feador of Ehlonna, for the Guardians of Light reside in these walls. I swear no harm will come of you. I am Laucian Nailo of Clan Grunalf and a fellow follower of the Lady of the Forests!"

"Hold a moment!", Argent will call out. "How can you be sure that she is what she appears to be? It could be a trick to get her inside the Gatehouse."
"Those are questions I could inquire about you as well," Valena will respond to the human. "I too bear the holy symbol of the Lady of the Forests, something only a friend of the woods may do without divine retribution. Lower your rope, brother of the forests, so that I may join you. It appears that we have much that needs to be discussed."

Assuming a rope is dropped, Valena will climb up it to the battlements. Once on top, Valena's features can be fully seen.

She is elfin in origin and stands an even five feet in height. Her hair is blond in color and held back by a headband. She wears a pale green woodsman outfit, but elfin chainmail can be seen underneath in spots. Her eyes are jade in color.

"Who are you people and how did you come to the Vesubian Gatehouse?"

Holding on for dear life, the pegasus doesn't throw her, and for that Lyonessa is grateful. As the magnificent creature climbs and banks, she has moved to a position where she can be better seated. The pegasus seems to know what its role is and so she uses the wand once more. This time a large cut bites deep into the orc mob, leaving many dead.

Taking a moment to take in the scene, she sees Lord Corley running away and Lord Acerion taking heavy blows from the large orc he is facing. Her other friends seem to be doing okay for the moment. Lyonessa is unsure how badly hurt the paladin is, but she means to keep an eye on him should he stagger or fall. She is uncertain if she can do anything for Lord Corley, but he doesn't seem to be chased after for the moment.

Until something else happens, Lyonessa will use the wand once more, aiming to cut down as many orcs as she can. She hopes the magic in the wand lasts long enough or that the orcs take enough casualties to start to lose morale soon. As she does so, a thought enters her mind, and so she tries it, calling out to the people held captive there, "We are here to save you! The liberation of your city is at hand! Fight back against your captors and help us free all of you!"

Battle for Corunglain

Grondar:
Chareos wrote:As the Riders make ready to depart Grondar Offers a spell of his patron for protection. As the dwarven priest approaches Chareos will accept his protection. "Thank you Grondar. Any aid you would be able to spare would be appreciated."
"You are welcome, my friend. May the gods bring you back safely," says Grondar. "And good luck to you as well; at least we have the fortification of this gatehouse to help keep us safe."

The riders leave, and a few orcs manage to slip in. Fortunately, he and Ivy are there to greet them in an appropriate fashion. All four go down quickly beneath the might of the two priests.
Ivy wrote:"We'd best get up on the battlements with the others," Ivy says as she rushes to join the other defenders.
"Way ahead of you," Grondar replies with a mischievous grin as he takes off for the walls at magically-enhanced speed.

The battle is fierce but subsides quickly as the area is cleared of goblinoids by the archers. Grondar's enchanted crossbow contributes to the tally, though he is clearly not the best archer of the bunch. Sadly, one of the refugees is killed by the return fire from below, though only the one, and Laucian and Po suffer the only other injuries.

As the remaining goblinoids fall back, a woman steps from the shadows. Apparently she had been helping from where she was hiding, though Grondar hadn't noticed at the time as he was so busy with his own crossbow.
Valena wrote:"I am Valena Feador of Ehlonna!", the woman calls out. "Who holds the battlements of the Vesubian Gatehouse?"
Laucian wrote:"Be at ease Valena Feador of Ehlonna, for the Guardians of Light reside in these walls. I swear no harm will come of you. I am Laucian Nailo of Clan Grundalf and a fellow follower of the Lady of the Forests!"
As the woman speaks, Grondar calls upon the power of TruthGiver to verify the veracity of her words. One can never be too careful, as others apparently agree.
Argent wrote:"Hold a moment!", Argent will call out. "How can you be sure that she is what she appears to be? It could be a trick to get her inside the Gatehouse."
"The power of my Holy weapon is such that any falsehoods will soon be known to me," Grondar says in an aside to Argent. "If by chance she is false, she will be discovered soon enough."
Valena wrote:"Those are questions I could inquire about you as well," Valena will respond to the human. "I too bear the holy symbol of the Lady of the Forests, something only a friend of the woods may do without divine retribution. Lower your rope, brother of the forests, so that I may join you. It appears that we have much that needs to be discussed."
Grondar is inclined to believe the woman based on what she says, though it would be possible to deface the symbol in such a way that it wasn't obvious from this distance. Either way, Truthgiver will tell him the truth.

Meanwhile, Laucian provides the woman a way to mount the walls, and she soon joins them. [Assuming that TruthGiver doesn't declare her a liar...] Taking a good look, Grondar groans at the thought of yet another elf in their midst.
"Who are you people and how did you come to the Vesubian Gatehouse?"
"As Laucian has stated, we are known as the Guardians of the Light. This company of adventurers was assembled by Lord Sherwood Scully and Lord Validar of Pyris. We came here to help in the battle against the goblinoids that we had heard were overrunning the area. It seems those tales are all too true. We arrived just this day after encountering a group of refugees from the city. After successfully storming this gatehouse from without, we brought the refugees inside for their own safety and have taken to its defense."

Sherra:

There really isn't an opportunity to help Argent correct what she's doing wrong with her bow, but Sherra notices that the invoker is able to hit a few of the humanoids. "You're getting the hang of it," Sherra will say as she reloads and fires at another orc.

There seems to be help from someone outside the walls as well, which brightens Sherra's mood somewhat. She couldn't imagine all of the resistance would have been slain or driven out. The woman is elven and deadly with her bow. Laucian calls down to her as everyone gathers around a bit in case the elven woman is not as friendly as she seems.

Sherra in the meantime will keep a vigilant eye out for additional enemies lurking about. She would hate for any of her companions to be hit because they let their guard down a bit while crowded near the edge of the wall. Regardless of what happens with Valena, Sherra will keep watch and be prepared to repel another attack.

Lord Validar -

Back at the Gatehouse:
"Our family histories are to be proud of regardless of our station or heritage. Each of us makes our own mark on the world."

"That is true, but some family histories are re-told in the songs of bards, while others are not. Perhaps my efforts will help elevate my own family's status somewhat. Only time will tell."

"I am certain that your exploits have already made a name for you, Argent. And once this battle is won, there is no question that all of our names will be elevated, at least in this part of the kingdom."

"I am concerned for the well being of all our comrades, Argent.

Lord Validar does not quite catch the reason for the disappointment in Argent's voice. "Do not be disappointed, Argent. This battle is far from ended and we will have further need of your talents. For now, we all do what we must."

At the Battle:
Lord Validar leads his group against the orcs in an attempt to halt the vile sacrifice taking place, but things do get off to a good start for them. The Lightning Bolt from Lyonessa's wand was helpful, but failed to remove any of the orc leaders. A moment later, Arocken's Arrow of Silence sails wide of its target and the Silence Spell's further usefulness is lost to them. Validar curses to himself and realizes at that moment he should have had Arocken fire the arrow into the ground at their feet rather than trying to also do damage with it. That one act, or rather lack of it, may seriously threaten this attack.

Lord Acerion exchanges blows with the large brutish orc as Lord Corley and himself charge on the leader of these slugs, while another Lightning strike slams into the orc horde. The other priest moves to intercept Validar. "If you desire to die so quickly, then so be it!", the young noble will shout. However, in redirecting Havok to change his course to properly strike the shaman, Validar looses his grip on his weapon. While it does not drop from his hand, the hesitation causes him to miss his target (word is that he rolled a "1"). Validar continues past his targets as he regains his composure.

Turning, he can see that the head shaman has been chanting and Lord Corley has turned and run due to some effect of the vile creature. Validar closes his eyes for a brief second as he looses one of his quite tiny group to magic. The frustration builds for a quick moment, but he masters it before it even causes him to pause.

Lyonessa has cleared out more of the orcs on the flanks with another Lightning Bolt. The attacks are effective, but until their leaders fall, the orc horde will likely be ready for the attack filled with furvor and flush with recent battle success. No matter, Validar thinks to himself. Better that they can kill all these vile, putrid beings here and now anyway.

"Lyonessa, Chareos!! The rest of the orcs are unimportant! Take down the leaders and we can finish the rest with ease!" Validar will do his best to ignore the normal orcs closing in on him, allowing Havok to bash and trample a path direct to the shaman he missed on his first attack. He will focus on that target and try to drop him with powerful sword strikes, engaging the orc until it is dead. Hopefully, Lyonessa and Chareos can strike the head shaman enought to weaken it and keep it from unleashing any more nasty surprises.

Validar's henchmen

Po -

Po is not very skilled with his shortbow, but he continues to fire as best he can. A few of the humanoids go down from his efforts and he is pleased that the attack is thwarted, regardless of who gets the glory. He is just doing his job and his duty.

He takes a couple wounds in the process, not being deft enough to use the crennellations as complete defense in between shots. One arrow grazes his shouler and another his side. Once the orcs are driven off, he will check the wounds, but stays at his post.

Arocken -

Arocken slows his mount and fires the enchanted Arrow at the orc shaman. A moment later he lets an elvish curse escape his lips as the arrow sails wide of the mark.

A moment later, he sees Lord Corley running back towards himself and the fighter-mage Chareos. "Lord Corley! Fight the fear! It is not natural! We need you!", the elf will call out to the large fighter.

Orcs start to close in on the pair, and they hear Lord Validar calling for attacks on the orc leaders. "Use your magic, Chareos," Arocken will say stepping in front of his comrade. "I will hold them at bay for a moment." Arocken will fire his arrows into the advancing orcs and then unsheath his sword and move to hand-to-hand combat.

Chareos

As the battle unfolds, Chareos sends a Lightning bolt into the horde before him. It does not have the desired affect that the young fighter-mage would have hoped for but at least it cut some of their numbers down.

As he prepares to meet the orcs that confront him, Arocken steps before him brandishing his bow and proceeds to take aim at the orcs.

"I will do the best that I can. But I am running low on spells!", he will reply. Concentrating and reciting the words to his Magic Missile spell he will attempt to target the Leaders with in. Not knowing which are the leaders within the chaos Chareos will use Lord Validar as well as Lord Acerion as markers within the crowd and cast his spells on the Lead orcs his comrades battle.

Laucian

After Introductions are made Argent makes her feelings known.
"Hold a moment!", Argent will call out. "How can you be sure that she is what she appears to be? It could be a trick to get her inside the Gatehouse."
The elf maiden soon reponds-
"Those are questions I could inquire about you as well," Valena will respond to the human. "I too bear the holy symbol of the Lady of the Forests, something only a friend of the woods may do without divine retribution. Lower your rope, brother of the forests, so that I may join you. It appears that we have much that needs to be discussed."
"Perhaps you are correct about her intentions, but what she speaks of is the truth! She did not have to put herself in harms way to aid us. To leave her to fend for herself out there after she aided us would be unwise. Besides we could use the assistance."

He will lower the rope to the ground. Once Valena has begun climbing the rope Laucian will watch for any possible archers that may wish to take a shot at the elf.

Once she nears the fortifications Laucian will offer his hand in aid to his fellow priest.

He will listen to Grondar's explanation of the situation and then ask Valena, "Where you here when the seige began? How did you enter Corulgain?" he will ask.

Arocken -

Orcs start to close in on the pair, and they hear Lord Validar calling for attacks on the orc leaders. "Use your magic, Chareos," Arocken will say stepping in front of his comrade. "I will hold them at bay for a moment." Arocken will fire his arrows into the advancing orcs and then unsheath his sword and move to hand-to-hand combat.

"I will do the best that I can. But I am running low on spells!", he will reply.

"It may only take a couple to assist our comrades in killing the enemy leaders. The important thing is if you hit them with your magic, they are limited in what they can do to us in return. The Seekers were quite effective in dealing with enemy spellcasters in this manner!" Arocken will speak as he shoots as many advancing orcs as he can before having to draw his sword for close combat.

Post Update:

Gatehouse:

The area outside the Gatehouse is now littered with the arrow-filled bodies of numerous humanoids. Emerging from the shadows you can see a blond-haired elf carrying a shortbow. She introduces herself as Valena Feador of Ehlonna and wishes to know who it is defending the Gatehouse.

While she and Laucian are conversing, Grondar uses Truthgiver to determine the legitimacy of her words. According to the enchanted Hammer, she does speak truly.

A rope is lowered and Valena climbs up to the battlements. The area around the Gatehouse continues to be empty. Grondar explains what has transpired to Valena.

Grondar wrote:"As Laucian has stated, we are known as the Guardians of the Light.
Laucian wrote:He will listen to Grondar's explanation of the situation and then ask Valena, "Where you here when the siege began? How did you enter Corunglain?" he will ask.
"My thanks," Valena will say as she is pulled up by Laucian. "I was away on a scouting mission when the attack took place. Fortunately I was in the lands to the east and had direct access to the city through the Northern and Southern Gatehouses. They are both still held by the city defenders."

"My goal has been to make contact with my superiors, but they all seem to be trapped in the Duke's Fortress. I am told that there was a large gathering at the fortress on the night of the attack. Most of the higher officials and ranking officers were attending it. As it stands now, those Gatehouses that we currently hold are being run by less experienced officers."

"Under the cover of night I have been sneaking into the city and scouting out the enemy and rescuing citizens as I could. As strange as it seems there are more humanoids in the city itself than there are those who are engaging in battle. If the humanoids were to unleash their full strength they could easily overwhelm the defenders. It seems that conquering the city is not their top priority for whatever reason."

"I have uncovered vital information that needs to be acted upon and soon. It seems that the source of the invasion was from within the city walls itself! There is a warehouse here in South Town where large numbers of humanoids leave, but do not return to. There is also such a building in North Town."

"There is a small maze of tunnels already existing underneath Corunglain. Most are unstable and collapsed as we uncover them. The only theory that makes sense is that the enemy has successfully tunneled underneath the city and come up in those two locations. Until these two tunnels are sealed off, there will be no end to the number of humanoids within Corunglain."

"When I saw the white flag raised on the Vesubian Gatehouse-- indicating that it was safe here-- I came to investigate and saw you defending the fortifications from the orcs. Sharing a common enemy, I figured we were on the same side."

"How many are there among you? Would you be able to launch an attack on these entry points into the city?"

Thus far the area outside the Gatehouse remains vacant. No foes to shoot at just yet.

Riders:

The conflict in the park continues on at full bore!

The battle between Lord Acerion and the orc known as Urko the Humancrusher rages on. Both sides land devastating blows, strikes that would have killed any ordinary soldier or orc. And yet both continue to stand! Acerion lands two solid strikes, while Urko makes an error and connects only once with his foe.

From seemingly out of nowhere, three Magic Missiles streak onto the scene courtesy of Chareos. He spreads the missiles so as to strike each of the three head orcs with one. The two lesser orcs shrug off the missiles.

A remarkable thing happens when the lone Magic Missile nears the orc leader. The missile rebounds off some unseen force and is hurtled back at Chareos! He is lightly wounded by his own missile!

Before Chareos, Arocken fires his bow twice and each shaft ends the life of an orc.

Overhead, Lyonessa clings to the Pegasus. Acting on its own accord, the noble steed flies back over the battlefield. Lyonessa can feel that the pegasus is flying much easier now and its speed has increased dramatically.

Hearing Lord Validar's call to target the leaders, Lyonessa prepares to use the wand again and the Pegasus maneuvers into a position where she can shoot two of the orcs and avoid the one fighting Lord Acerion.

The lightning strikes the two orcs once more and yet they still refuse to go down. As the pegasus flies off once more, Lyonessa implores the captives to fight back.
Lyonessa wrote:"We are here to save you! The liberation of your city is at hand! Fight back against your captors and help us free all of you!"
Her words serve to spur the prisoners on and scuffles break out amongst the remaining humans and their captors.

As the pegasus is flying off, Lyonessa can't help but notice something below. There's what appears to be an open wagon being driven towards the center of the park! What's more remarkable is that the wagon is being driven by a creature that looks something like a small ogre!

If that wasn't odd enough, seated beside the driver is a dwarf who holds a flaming hammer in his hand. The dwarf throws the hammer forward and it unerringly strikes one of the orcs. As if by magic, the hammer flies back to its master's hand!

The wagon is being directed towards the scuffling prisoners and Orcish captors.

Elsewhere, Lord Validar spurs Havoc on and rides back towards the three orcs. He rides through a group of regular orcs who attempt to stab at them with their weapons. While none hit their intended target, Havoc is grazed by a bastard sword.

Breaching the barrier of orcs, Validar rides towards the lesser priest. While doing this, he closes to within thirty feet of the orc leader and comes within range of his unholy display of power. Validar feels fear for just a moment and then it vanishes from his body.

Reaching the lesser priest, Validar slashes at the orc striking him twice solidly. The foul priest of Gruumish remains standing and retaliates, lightly wounding Validar with his spear.

The head orc bursts onto the battle between Validar and the priest far faster than would seem to be possible. He wields a massive long spear, easily twelve feet in length, and drives its point home into the side of the noble warrior! The blow is backed by far greater strength than should be possible! Validar winces in terrific pain and is forcibly knocked off the back of Havoc!

Away from the main battle Lord Corley still feels the effects of the power of the orc leader. As he flees in terror, he is struck by orc weapons as he passes. A few penetrate his armor, but the wounds are minor.

Finally the terror departs his mind and he stops. A pair of orcs rush the young lord, but they are first sliced in half by his massive sword.

Lord Acerion and his Orcish foe can barely stand by now. Both have taken heavy damage from their exchanges and blood flows freely from both warriors. The orc connects with another smash from his Morning Star while Acerion sinks his battleaxe deep into his foe's chest!

The orc drops, sinking into death, while Acerion falls to his knees in near exhaustion and not far from death himself.

Arocken switches to his swords as the orcs close in on him. He stabs at his enemies furiously and with reckless abandon. Behind Acerion, Chareos casts a second Magic Missile and this time targets only the lesser priest. All three missiles slam into the priest without surprise.

Validar is up on his feet again. He rushes around Havoc and strikes down the lesser priest with his longsword. As he turns to face the head orc, the leader stabs Validar with his long spear once more! The weapon is driven deep into Validar's midsection and much to his surprise, the orc actually lifts him off the ground and holds him aloft!

Suddenly, from out of the blue, a flaming hammer smashes into the back of the lead orc's head sending him stumbling forward! His grip on the spear is lost and Validar falls to the ground once more. The spear is pulled free from his chest from the impact and blood flows freely from the massive wound.

Steeling himself, Validar gets to his feet and advances on the momentarily surprised orc leader. His longsword slashes into the orc's side, but it doesn't slay him. The orc turns to face Validar and unleashes a hideous laugh at him!

A little ways away, Lord Corley continues to rush back to join his comrades. More orcs bar his path and he slices into them with reckless abandon. The wounds he inflicts on them heal his own wounds in the process.

Lyonessa continues to fly overhead on the pegasus. With all the close quarter fighting going on down below she hesitates to use the Wand of Lightning once more.

Her attention is once more drawn to the wagon as the team of horses drawing it runs over any orcs who dare to get in its way. She sees the dwarf throw his flaming hammer once more, this time hitting the orc leader in the back of the head. The action allows Validar to free himself from the leader's long spear.

The wagon screeches to a halt near a woman wearing dark blue and silvery robes. The ogre-like man jumps off the wagon and lands on a pair of orcs before the Priestess.

"GORSO SAVE!!", the man-beast roars.

Reaching the priestess, Gorso rips the gag that had covered her mouth off and in an equally powerful motion snaps the chains holding her wrists together.

The priestess says nothing and pauses as if to gather her strength. Then she screams a single, incomprehensible word, that explodes outward like a sonic boom. Everyone within thirty feet of the priestess has their spirits lifted as warmth and goodness fills the area. Acerion is near the outer edge of this effect and knows that the power of Heironeous himself is present.

But that is not the most remarkable thing that happens. Every single orc within thirty feet of the priestess simply drops dead. They fall like puppets who's strings have been cut.

Spent from her exertion, the priestess falls but is caught by the man-beast named Gorso.

The orc leader cries out some command in his natural language. The throng of orcs begins to retreat from the park. The leader himself dashes off, moving far faster than one could without magical assistance. He picks up the orc Acerion was fighting and then rushes off into the night. In sudden, dramatic fashion, the tide of battle has shifted and the enemy is in retreat!

GM Notes:

Attacks of Opportunity can be made against the fleeing orcs if you so desire. Once the area is clear enough, the pegasus will land close to Acerion.

Gorso and the dwarf with the flaming hammer will stay near the human priestess. Here are their descriptions:

Gorso is easily 8' tall with greasy black hair, green eyes and a purplish skin tone. Ugly sucker too.

The man wielding the fire hammer is a grizzled dwarven warrior. His beard is trimmed short.

In spite of the disheveled robes she wears, the priestess is quite a lovely woman with long flowing brown hair and brown eyes.

Current Hit Points:

Acerion - 4 of 46
Chareos - 56 of 59
Corley - 41 of 52
Grondar - 47 of 52
Havoc - 20 of 24
Laucian - 53 of 64

The tide turns again...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Validar sets his sights on the lesser orc priest and with a snap of the reins, charges Havok straight for him. Several of the orcish soldiers foolishly attempt to block his way, but the heavy warhorse bashes his way forcibly through the throng, trampling and crushing those he hits.

As he closes the gap, Validar feels the unnatural grip of fear take hold of his mind. It is unexpected and alien, and Validar steels himself against it, but it quickly passes from him. Undaunted, he rides forward and slashes the orc priest that is his target. "Die, Vile scum!"

The orc is clearly a superior foe to normal enemy orcs, as the creature not only remains standing after these attacks and the magical strikes that his comrades have added, but manages to strike back in the process. As Validar is determined to kill this orc, the leader suddenly buries his spear in Validar's side.

A moment later Validar finds himself unhorsed and on the ground. The attack had much more force behind it than it should have and Validar winces in pain from the blow.

Looking over as he collects himself and rises again, Lord Acerion and the orc fighter trade terrific blows and both struggle to remain on their feet. Validar is confident in his friend's ability and therefore moves to confront his own foes.

Moving around Havok, Validar closes as quickly as he can. With a scream combined of hate and anger, he slashes the lesser priest and his sword bites deep into the orc's neck. Validar notices the life go out of the orc's eyes and immediately casts his attention at the leader before the other orc has even hit the ground.

"Now you will die, vile slug!", Lord Validar yells as he moves in on the attack. But the orc is unnaturally quick and hits with his long spear before Validar can close the distance. The spear strike avoids his shield and imbeds in his mid-section. A moment later, Validar is amazed to be hoisted off the ground, the spear still imbedded in him!

Lord Validar grabs the spear with his shield hand and is about to try to break the spear shaft with his enchanted blade, when a flaming hammer strikes the orc in the head. Dropping to the ground once more, the noble warrior pulls the spear free and tosses it aside. These clearly are no normal orc foes!

Gathering his strength, Validar gets to his feet once more and advances on the attack again. The leader is surprised by the sudden turn of events quite clearly and as Validar connects, a grunt escapes from his lips from the powerful blow. The orc leader turns and simply laughs an inhuman sound at him. "Laugh now, but know this: You will die by my hand, now or in the future!", Validar retorts.

As the battle rages around them, Validar can see some help arrive and he sees Acerion go down a moment after felling his own foe. A feeling of grim satisfaction comes over the Guardians' leader as he sees the battle finally going their way.

The orc leader breaks off and shouts the command to retreat. Seeing this happening, Validar will hasten his own comrades to continue their assault. "Strike hard! Chase them down and kill as many as possible while we can!" Validar will strike at those around him, until there are no more in striking distance.

As the orcs flee the scene, Validar drops his sword arm and sheathes his weapon. His gauntleted hand is bloodied from holding his own wounds, but he is confident that his regenerative abilities will soon stop the flow of blood and begin to heal the wounds received from his opponent.

As soon as he composes himself, Validar will remount Havok. "Lyonnessa can you see to our fallen paladin there. Arocken and Chareos, gather together the prisoners. We will escort them to the Gatehouse. Lord Corley, stand guard on our return direction. We will be moving out as soon as we are able."

He will then ride over to the pair who rode in on the wagon. "Your assistance was most fortuitous in this attack. These orcs were lead by far more than normal leaders. Your help allowed us to drive them from the field of battle. I am Lord Validar of Pyris. We have retaken the Vesubian Gatehouse and are here to strike at the heart of this vile enemy."

Acerion

Acerion:

Lord Acerion and his Orcish foe can barely stand by now. Both have taken heavy damage from their exchanges and blood flows freely from both warriors. The orc connects with another smash from his Morning Star while Acerion sinks his battleaxe deep into his foe's chest!

The orc drops, sinking into death, while Acerion falls to his knees in near exhaustion and not far from death himself.

Sweat and blood mix in their escape from Acerion's body, but he proved to be superior to his foe. His axe buried deep in the chest of the powerful orc proves that to Acerion. Unable to stand, he takes a moment to try and recover some of his spent strength, knowing there are others all around him that would seek to end his life.

Acerion can't help but feel the power of Heironeous flow from the woman he had spotted earlier. He does not recognize her saviors, but she puts her divine power to good use. Even though many enemies drop around him, he still puts his feet under him and frees his axe in case other foes still linger.

Acerion is startled by the sudden appearance of the orcish leader and how swiftly he retrieves the fallen body of his lesser. He is quite surprised actually that there would even be the thought in the orc's brain to retrieve the body of his fallen, unless there is something valuable that the orc he vanquished possessed. As he ponders the thought, the orc leader is gone.

"Nay, Lady Lyonessa, keep your spells for those who may need them more than I," Acerion will say. He will use his paladin healing on himself before joining Validar and the others. Seeing that the priestess is unconscious, or at least seemingly so, he will regard Gorso a moment before asking, "Will she be alright?"

Sherra:

Seeing no other foes, Sherra still stands watch as Valena climbs the offered rope and joins the companions on the wall. She will stay within earshot to hear the elven woman's tale, but makes no comments. Laucian and Grondar are more than enough to tell the elf Valena what she wants to know.

So instead, Sherra will walk the walls, checking on those who are stationed there and providing pointers where needed. Most of the townspeople that are manning the walls with them are obviously not expert bowmen, but everyone fared well enough to repel the few dozen that stormed the walls. What she fears is a larger horde looming just out of sight. Tymora grant us luck to see all of us through this night at least she will think quietly to herself.

Battle for Corunglain

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:
Laucian wrote:"Perhaps you are correct about her intentions, but what she speaks of is the truth! She did not have to put herself in harms way to aid us. To leave her to fend for herself out there after she aided us would be unwise. Besides we could use the assistance."
It quickly becomes clear from TruthGiver's glow that the woman speaks the truth. "There are no falsehoods in this woman's words," Grondar says.

The dwarf listens carefully to all of the information provided by Valena. The city is certainly in dire peril, but the people of the city still hold out in several places. Her description of the tunnels does much to explain the success of the attack; however, it concerns him greatly that the humanoids seem to have unknown higher priorities. "Any ideas, Valena, regarding what they are focusing their efforts toward?"
Valena wrote:"How many are there among you? Would you be able to launch an attack on these entry points into the city?"
"There are nearly fifty refugees here in the gatehouse grounds. Of the Guardians, what you see here are about half our number. The others, including our leader Lord Validar, are currently on a raid into the city in an effort to stop a sacrificial rite to the orc's foul god Gruumsh."

As the discussion continues, Grondar moves among the defenders on the wall checking on the condition of any injured. Noting that Po is the worst affected, Grondar will offer the former bandit the healing powers of his diety. If accepted, he converts Enthrall to a CMW and casts that blessing on the young warrior. He also pauses to say a prayer over the body of the refugee who died in the fighting. He will have to determine whether the man had any family here, and offer his sympathies to them if he did.

Stopping back by Laucian, Grondar says, "I assume you can take care of your own wounds; however, if you need assistance, please let me know."

Of those others remaining in the gatehouse, only himself is injured, and those wounds are too feeble to bother with holy blessings, but he will pause to change the dressings and rebind.

The lightning strikes the two orcs once more and yet they still refuse to go down. As the pegasus flies off once more, Lyonessa implores the captives to fight back.

Lyonessa can simply not believe the resiliance of the orcish leaders. there must be some sort of magical defenses at work here She is glad however to see that her words have stirred the prisoners into action.

That's a sight the songstress of Mystra doesn't see every day! She isn't sure at first whether the pair is friend or foe, but as orcs start to fall, her doubt leaves. However, the battle below is becoming very chaotic and she isn't sure about wielding the wand any further. She watches intently as the unlikely pair fight their way to free a woman.

The woman turns out to be a priestess and unleashes a powerful force that slays orcs that are too near to her. It is an awesome sight, and it forces the orcs to reconsider their plans.

The orc leader breaks off and shouts the command to retreat. Seeing this happening, Validar will hasten his own comrades to continue their assault. "Strike hard! Chase them down and kill as many as possible while we can!" Validar will strike at those around him, until there are no more in striking distance.

Lyonessa will do just that, and line up another shot with the wand, looking to cut deeply into the fleeing mass. She will of course not aim anywhere near one of her own friends or the allies. If she can get the orc leader in the line, then she will take the shot, but will not waste an opportunity to strike as many as she can.

"Nay, Lady Lyonessa, keep your spells for those who may need them more than I," Acerion will say. He will use his paladin healing on himself before joining Validar and the others.

Lyonessa will shake her head at Acerion's words, even though it is admirable at the resolve the paladin shows. She will watch him carefully, if his own healing is not enough. Otherwise she will move through the prisoners and offer healing to any who need it, converting spells as appropriate, or simply binding and tending to lesser wounds.

"My thanks," Valena will say as she is pulled up by Laucian. "I was away on a scouting mission when the attack took place. Fortunately I was in the lands to the east and had direct access to the city through the Northern and Southern Gatehouses. They are both still held by the city defenders." [/i]
"My pleasure, he will reply.

"Understandable," he will state plainly. "From what you heard was there anyone else of major importance that was invited to this gathering?"

"If what have you seen is true then it does make sense," he says while looking between those who are listening. "It would seem that they are rotating their units to keep them fresh as Coruglain's defenders waver. Though what does not make sense is if they do posses the numbers in which you speak they could simply starve those within." Scratching his head slightly he will ask, "Do these warehouses of which you speak have sentries and how often do they emerge from it?"

"Then this has been planned for some time then. To dig a tunnel of that magnitude as well as under a river would take some time to accomplish," he will add matter of factly.
"How many are there among you? Would you be able to launch an attack on these entry points into the city?"
"There are nearly fifty refugees here in the gatehouse grounds. Of the Guardians, what you see here are about half our number. The others, including our leader Lord Validar, are currently on a raid into the city in an effort to stop a sacrificial rite to the orc's foul god Gruumsh."
"Though most of those who are among us are too old or young to go to battle, if all went well the others will return this night." Thinking for a moment he will look to the others and then return his gaze to Valena and say, "Before this night is through you will see those caverns sealed, though for now we are charged to hold this Gatehouse until Validar and our comrades return."

As the conversation comes to a close and Laucian begins to walk the walls speaking amongst the defenders Grondar approaches.
Stopping back by Laucian, Grondar says, "I assume you can take care of your own wounds; however, if you need assistance, please let me know."
"I apperciate your concern Grondar, though I am fine," he will say with an easy smile. "I will see to them soon."

Afterward he will burn his Sunscorch into a CLW and cast it upon himself and then begin walking the wall awaiting his companions' arrival or a humaniod attack.

Validar & Acerion wrote:He will then ride over to the pair who rode in on the wagon.

Seeing that the priestess is unconscious, or at least seemingly so, he will regard Gorso a moment before asking, "Will she be alright?"
"And here I was going to thank you for your assistance", the dwarf will state. "The name's Oran Firehammer. The handsome lad is Gorso, Drakkimor's half-ogre bodyguard. The lady is Crysania, Priestess of Heironeous. I think she's just tired. We're all tired for that matter. Feels like I've been fighting for three straight days now."

"Uttering the Holy Word is draining," Crysania will softly say, "but I will recover. I had feared that I would never see you again, my friends. Have you seen Drakkimor? He was here but I lost track of him. Does he still live?"

Validar's henchmen

Po -

As the discussion continues, Grondar moves among the defenders on the wall checking on the condition of any injured. Noting that Po is the worst affected, Grondar will offer the former bandit the healing powers of his diety. If accepted, he converts Enthrall to a CMW and casts that blessing on the young warrior.

Po accepts quietly and is pleased to see that he was not overlooked. As not only a former bandit, but not a full member of this group, Po is not always sure what the others think of him. As the healing takes effect, Po gives the dwarven priest a slight smile.

Arocken -

Arocken will take up his bow again and fire on the retreating orcs until there are no more in range. With a snarl on his lips, he will shout, "And do not return here, unless you want to meet your disgusting god face to face!"

Arocken nods his understanding and gets on to the task at hand. We will check on the prisoners and try to acertain how many of them are soldiers and how many are regular citizens. We will get them all grouped together and ready to move out with Chareos assistance.

Lord Validar -

"And here I was going to thank you for your assistance", the dwarf will state. "The name's Oran Firehammer. The handsome lad is Gorso, Drakkimor's half-ogre bodyguard. The lady is Crysania, Priestess of Heironeous. I think she's just tired. We're all tired for that matter. Feels like I've been fighting for three straight days now."

"Greetings to all of you. You are welcome to join with us. We have reclaimed the Vesubian Gatehouse and therefore have a place to rest and recover. We could use your assistance in this battle most certainly."

Seeing the priestess of Heironeous stir, he will say, "Your ability was quite spectacular, Crysania of Heironeous. Your part in the battle as well was very much appreciated."

Regardless of whether the others come with us (and I hope they do), Validar will turn to Lord Acerion. "Lord Acerion, I require your counsel for a brief moment." The two step away and speak, although Validar is not trying to hush his voice or hide what they are saying.

"The orcs were a bit more than what I expected. My overconfidence put us at a disadvantage and yet I am loathe to let this setback hinder us in our attempt to free this city and to engage the enemy on as many fronts as possible."

"I would like to see the Fire Giants catapults destroyed and only Lyonessa and the Wand of Lightning are capable of that. Also I would like to secure the West Gatehouse as well, even if we do not occupy it this night. What are your thoughts?"

Once Arocken and Chareos have assembled the prisoners, Validar will ask, "How many are soldiers or adventurers? Do we have any that can help us defend our holdings?"

Chareos

From seemingly out of nowhere, three Magic Missiles streak onto the scene courtesy of Chareos. He spreads the missiles so as to strike each of the three head orcs with one. The two lesser orcs shrug off the missiles.

A remarkable thing happens when the lone Magic Missile nears the orc leader. The missile rebounds off some unseen force and is hurtled back at Chareos! He is lightly wounded by his own missile!

Two of his missiles strike their targets though they do not hinder much from what he can tell. As he looks to the third orc his eyes widen as the spell rebounds away from the lead orc. Within seconds he groans as he is hit by his own missile.

" I will not make that mistake again!" he growls to himself.
He begins chanting and concentrating on another magic missile spell. He soon targets the other orc priest and the big orc fighter and all three beams of magic energy slam into his intended targets.

A roar is soon heard that draws his attention: "GORSO SAVE!!!" and the next thing he knows a woman's scream is heard as many orcs fall to the floor as if the strings controlling them were cut.

In mere moments the tide of battle has been turned, and the horde of orcs begin to retreat.
The orc leader breaks off and shouts the command to retreat. Seeing this happening, Validar will hasten his own comrades to continue their assault. "Strike hard! Chase them down and kill as many as possible while we can!" Validar will strike at those around him, until there are no more in striking distance.
Brandishing his quarterstaff he will smack any orc within range of him with it.

The park soon clears and only his comrades and another group of adventurers remain. Looking about to his comrades all are well though
Acerion looks to be on his last legs.

Giving a nod in understanding Chareos heads towards the prisoners and begins checking on them, as well as asking them who are fighting men (if he cannot tell by their clothing). He gives them praise for being so resilient in the face of peril. "You did well this night all of you. We will have you within safe walls soon enough," he will say reassuringly. Eyeing the chains that bind them he can't help but wonder just how greatly his strength has been modified by his girdle.

Reaching down and picking up a chain he will try to bend/break the chain. If he succeeds he will do so again further down the link.
To serve and protect those who cannot.
