New Frontiers #47

The fighting in the Vesubian Gatehouse continues. Outside the gatehouse and on the other side of the bridge, Ivy, Po, and the refugees wait for the signal to advance.

Grondar rushes across the bridge rapidly thanks to his magically enhanced boots. The Wall of Fog remains in effect and he cannot see anyone or thing on the top of the Gatehouse. No targets are spotted on either tower.

In the road leading through the Gatehouse, Grondar finds Lyonessa and two more refugees. They had just stepped into the tunnel and out of sight from the orc archers on the roof of the left hand tower.

In the ground floor of one tower, Laucian and Lord Corley advance. The Elfin Ranger says that there are goblins in the nearby chamber. The pair sneak up to the door and then burst in.

Inside they find five goblins in what appears to be a dinning hall. The little humanoids appear to be ransacking the food stores and the place is a mess. Half-eaten food is everywhere and containers dumped of their contents. An open door on the left-hand wall looks into a kitchen.

The pair are on the humanoids before they can react. Lord Corley's mammoth sword slices through the creatures, taking three of them down. Laucian follows up with a pair of shafts taking out the last two. This immediate area has been cleared.

On the second floor of the right-hand tower, Lord Acerion and Chareos are engaging orcs. Acerion blasts the first orc with his Holy Battleaxe, downing it with ease. Behind him, Chareos casts Iron Spikes at the large orog in plate armor. The orcs behind rush up to engage the intruders.

The spell, while similar to Magic Missile has its differences. Instead of generating bolts of magical energy, the spell creates iron-like bolts. These 'Iron Spikes' are propelled forward just like a Magic Missile and whiz around friends and foes in-between the caster and his targets. The three spikes slam into the orog's plate armor and lodge in his chest, forcing the creature back a few steps. Undaunted, the orog growls and continues forward. Blood begins to flow from the three wounds.

Outside in the courtyard, Arocken and Lord Validar rush towards the towers flanking the left hand gates into the city. Arocken rushes past the open stable and can see the horror inside there. He reaches his tower first and rushes inside. Behind the door is a small hallway with numerous doors. Opening the first few doors suggests that they are private quarters. A way to go upwards is not readily apparent.

Lord Validar reaches the far tower and opens the door. To his dismay, he finds that the lower level of this tower serves as a jail. Four cells take up the ground floor and there is no access to the upper levels of the tower.

Argent stands on the roof over the left-hand city gates. She was attempting to lower the gates, but proved unable to. Her attempt was noticed by four orcs and they rush to attack the Invoker.

Argent casts her favorite spell and five sparkling Magic Missiles light up the night. Two of the orcs take two of the missiles and one of the other orcs the last missile. All three orcs go down under the magic.

From seemingly out of nowhere, arrows come flying in at the last orc! One hits the creature in his shoulder, but does not put him down. Stunned by just how suddenly his friends were taken down and now finding himself under fire, the orc turns and rushes back into the tower leaving Argent alone on the wall top.

The orcs on the top of the left hand tower fire more shafts in a vein attempt to hit someone. Arocken, Validar, Argent, and Sherra all have arrows fired at them, but all miss their intended target.

GM Notes:

Goblins, and other critters under 1 HD are subject to what is called a Heroic Fray. Under these situations, warriors can attack twice as many times with their primary weapons. That's how Corley was able to take out three goblins in one single round.

The enter into a Heroic Fray, the warrior must be outnumbered by the enemy and the enemy must be under 1 HD. Warriors who are over 10 levels apart vs. enemies who are also outnumbered can also go into a Heroic Fray. An 11th level fighter surrounded by 1 HD orcs can also do a Heroic Fray. If the Warrior uses two weapons, the 2nd weapon gains 1 additional attack.

Combat Maps have been updated.

Acerion - 44 of 46
Grondar - 47 of 52
Havoc - 22 of 24

Next tower...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Lord Validar rushes across the Vesubian Gatehouse courtyard and opens the door to the middle of the three smaller towers. As soon as he does, he remembers the configuration as he is confronted by the Gatehouse holding cells. These were temporary cells for anyone caught in the immediate area doing a crime or in the case of smuggling goods into or out of the city.

Grumbling to himself about his hastiness, he backs away and checks the area. Arrows continue to fly, but they are nearly non-existent, which means the towers' tops have few archers remaining on them.

Lord Validar considers checking to see if any enemies are in the area through the nearby porcullis, but there are others behind who can close the gates once the portcullis are dropped. The most important thing is getting them dropped in the first place.

He quickly leaves this area and heads to the remaining tower further to the right. He will enter and look for a way to the top.

Grondar:

As Grondar rushes across the bridge, he finds that the Wall of Fog that was cast earlier blocks his sight of the tops of the wall and towers. At least it keeps him from getting fired at.

Entering the gatehouse tunnel, Grondar comes upon Lyonessa and her two young charges. His heart goes out to the children caught up in this conflict.
Lyonessa wrote:"Grondar!" Lyonessa will call out once he is close enough. "They are all in or on the towers. There is still fierce fighting inside!"
A thought occurs to Grondar. "I can run them back to Ivy and the other refugees and get back here very quickly. That would free you up to help the others, as well."

If Lyonessa doesn't have an objection to his plan, Grondar will scoop up the two kids - one in each hand - and zip off to deliver them to Ivy and company.

Po -

The cleric Ivy does not respond to Po's comment, but she has been nice to him so far, so he does not think much of it. He watches the Gatehouse, but little can be seen with the Fog shrouding the entrance. Grondar soon disappears into the entrance.

Arocken -
Arocken sees the slaughter of the horses as he passes the stable and the fiery elf only grits his teeth that much harder. Once inside, he finds some private quarters. He continues to open doors looking for enemies or a way to the top of the tower.

Readying his bow as he slowly follows Lord Corley into the room the goblins come into view as Corley cuts down three of the surprised creatures in the blink of an eye. As the remaining two goblins turn to engage them Laucian lets loose with two shafts ending their lives.

He quickly nocks another arrow to his bow and slowly makes his way across the remains towards the open doorway of the kitchen. As he moves closer he will attempt to look into the kitchen. If he sees any hostiles he will fire upon them.

Saying the encantation Chareos concentrates as the spell comes to life. Not knowing what to expect from the spell, three iron spikes materialize and speed toward the armored Orog. As he watches the spikes hit he smiles slightly. The Orog steps back a few paces but only growls in return. His smile fades as it continues moving forward as blood drips to the floor.

"Well that didn't work all too well now did it," he thinks to himself. Taking his quarterstaff in hand he will move to engage one of the remaining orcs and let the Orog come to them.

A thought occurs to Grondar. "I can run them back to Ivy and the other refugees and get back here very quickly. That would free you up to help the others, as well."

"That would be wonderful, Grondar," Lyonessa confesses, glad to hear that Ivy and the refugees are not far away. She will explain to her two charges that Grondar will take them quickly to where others from their town are, and they will be safe. There is little doubt in Lyonessa's mind that they could be anywhere safer than under the protection of the noble dwarf.

After she makes sure Grondar is safely away with the pair, she will turn and run across the courtyard, hoping to avoid being a target for orc arrows. She will try to catch up to Arocken since he went into a tower alone, and unlike Validar, did not immediately re-emerge.

Ivy:

Ivy waits impatiently with the refugees as the fighting in the Gatehouse continues on. It's hard to tell what is going on from this far away and it is that uncertainty that bothers Ivy the most. The fate of her friends and loved ones can't help but run through her mind.
Po wrote:"I thought I should join the others, but Lord Validar did say to protect the refugees until they were in the Gatehouse." Po will look for the signal to move forward, a little thankful that he is not in the thick of the fighting and a little disappointed that he is not in the thick of the fighting.

The cleric Ivy does not respond to Po's comment, but she has been nice to him so far, so he does not think much of it. He watches the Gatehouse, but little can be seen with the Fog shrouding the entrance. Grondar soon disappears into the entrance.
(Not a big surprise since Ivy hasn't posted since Po made his remarks!)

"This may not be the most exciting of tasks", Ivy will finally say, "But it is an important one. These people need our protection. I am sure that we will all be sick of battle by the time this is all over with."

"If we survive", Ivy will mentally add. No need to frighten Po any more than he already is.

Ivy continues to wait for the word to advance.

Corley:

Near the stables:
Laucian wrote:"You have seen but a taste of what these creatures are capable of. Come the night is just begun and we have much to accomplish."
"That we do, my friend. I was raised to respect such noble animals and to find them so cruelly cut down is beyond comprehension. Let us cut a path of retribution through these honorless foes!"
Laucian wrote:As he reaches the corridor he overhears the inhuman mutterings of the humanoids. He listens for a few moments and the words become clearer. Recognizing the creatures as goblins he mouths to Corley, "Goblins"
Corley nods his understanding and continues forward.
Inside they find five goblins in what appears to be a dinning hall. The little humanoids appear to be ransacking the food stores and the place is a mess. Half-eaten food is everywhere and containers dumped of their contents. An open door on the left-hand wall looks into a kitchen.

As he had hoped, we burst in and catch the invaders unaware. Corley's mammoth sword slashes out and removes three of the five. Fine archery from Laucian takes care of the rest. The immediate area is clear but the creatures have been into the food supplies. If Corley learned anything from his father its that an army can only go as far as its supplies will take it. The refugees will need food and water in addition to shelter.
Laucian wrote:He quickly nocks another arrow to his bow and slowly makes his way across the remains towards the open doorway of the kitchen. As he moves closer he will attempt to look into the kitchen. If he sees any hostiles he will fire upon them.
Seeing Laucian head towards one door, Corley will take the other.

"We must make our way up to the top of the tower and remove those archers before they can cause any more harm!"

Corley will rush out the door and search for a way to reach the top of the tower.

Argent:
Sherra will ignore the orcs above her and turn to help Argent. She will fire a volley into the approaching orcs in the hopes that, combined with Argent's own magical attack, they can clear the enemy quickly so Argent can finish her task unmolested.
I'd just as soon be unmolested by them too! :D

The Invoker is mildly surprised, but quite pleased, to see all three orcs go down. She had only expected two of them to fall, so the extra one is a bonus. With the magical defenses she has in place, Argent is confident that she'll be able to deal with one of these creatures.
The incoming arrows arrive so quickly that Argent is unable to track them with her magical sight. It's as if they came from out of nowhere! Looking back across the courtyard, Argent is unable to pick out just who fired those arrows (assuming that Sherra's armor is concealing her), but she is grateful nonetheless.

More arrows come flying in, this time from the tower top where more orcs are encamped.

"I've had just about enough of your kind", Argent will say before casting another Magic Missile. If possible spread her attack so as to hit five of the orcs.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Grondar waits for Lyonessa to explain the situation to the children. Once she's done, he asks, "You ready go, kids?" Once they assent, Grondar is off, zooming across the bridge at astounding speed.

He screeches to a halt in front of Ivy, kicking up a small cloud of dust in the process, then sets the kids down. "Hi. The others had found these kids inside and I found Lyonessa protecting them. I brought them back here to be with others from the city and to free up Lyonessa to help the others.

"As far as I could tell, the courtyard had been cleared. From the sounds I heard, our friends appear to be busy clearing the towers and walls. I don't think anyone has been seriously injured. If everything is okay here, I'd better get back and help."

Grondar will answer any questions, then race back across the bridge.

Sherra shakes her head at not being able to put down the last orc, but at least she made him flee. Argent probably could have handled herself, but Sherra had no desire to take that chance. It doesn't appear that Argent can see her, so that at least lets Sherra know her armor is still doing its job.

"Now, back to you," Sherra says softly and focuses once more on the inept orcish archers on top of the tower. She will ready another volley of arrows to be fired just as soon as one of the humanoids pokes his head out for her.

"Don't crowd," Acerion will attempt to instruct the orcs pushing in, "if it's death you want, I'll hand out plenty for all of you."

His Holy axe ends the life of yet another foe to make his point as Chareos decides to use magic against the orog. The spell doesn't seem to have affected it too greatly, but Acerion hasn't the time to be that discerning. "He is a bit better built than this fodder it seems at least," Acerion tells Chareos, talking about the orog.

It has been too long since Acerion has faced a worthy opponent, but he will continue to swing his axe at these humanoids for as long as they can remain standing.

Post Continued:

Grondar picks up the two kids who had earlier been menaced by the trolls and rushes them back across the Vesubian Bridge to the rest of the refugees. They seem numb in shock from what they have seen and do not resist.

In the right-hand tower, Acerion's Holy Weapon lashes out two more times and two more orcs fall before it. Chareos steps in and whacks the remaining orc with his staff. The lone orog continues to advance.

In the left-hand tower, Corley and Laucian search for more enemies and a way to reach the tower battlements. Stairs going up are located and the pair ascend. Stairs leading to the roof are immediately spotted.

On the wall top over the city gates, Argent sends a volley of Magic Missiles towards the orc archers on top of the left hand tower. Five sparkling missiles fly forward and unerringly slam into five archers. Several go down from the assault.

Sherra moves forward and fires her own arrows. An orc is struck. He staggers on top of the battlements for a few moments and then plunges over letting out a strangled cry. He hits the walkway below and goes silent.

The archers fire more shafts, but miss all their targets.

Down in the courtyard, Lyonessa avoids a few arrows as she rushes to join Arocken. She enters into the middle tower and finds a hallway with open doors. The doors along the sides seem to lead to private quarters while the one at the end of the hallway has stairs behind it. The Songstress goes up the stairs.

Across the courtyard Validar enters a very similar looking tower. At the far end of a hallway are stairs leading up.

Arocken emerges from the middle tower and dashes across the wall top towards Argent. The Invoker explains what needs to be done to lower the city gates. Together, they are able to send the first gate down with a thunderous crash.

Grondar arrives at the far end of the Vesubian Bridge baring the boy and girl. He leaves them off and then rushes back across the bridge to rejoin the others.

Acerion steps forward to engage the orog. The orog tries to stab the paladin with his sword, but misses. Acerion does not and another falls to the Axe of the Valorous. Together with Chareos, they explore the rest of this tower and find no other foes.

Sherra continues to fire on the rooftop archers. One more falls to her bow. The next thing the archers know, Lord Corley and Laucian are among them. After a very brief scuffle, the last of the archers are put down.

Lyonessa emerges on the rooftop and joins Argent and Arocken. The last city gate on this side is lowered.

On the other side of the courtyard, Lord Validar emerges on the other battlement. Almost immediate as he opens the door he finds an orc in front of him. The orc is so startled to find Validar before him that it doesn't even try to defend himself.

After downing the orc, Validar continues along and reaches the winch controls for the remaining city gates. He easily gets the first down and is joined by Lyonessa, Argent and Arocken when lowering the second.

Grondar returns to the courtyard and finds no one on the ground level. The immediate area is a mess as there are flaming troll and orc remains there as well as numerous mutilated bodies.

The lowering of the city gates was loud enough for everyone in the Gatehouse to hear. No other goblinoids are found within the complex. The Gatehouse has been cleared!

The Gatehouse is liberated...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

The noble warrior is unimpeded as he moves through the tower until he comes to the rooftop battlements. There a surprised orc quickly falls and there is no other resistance.

Lord Validar drops the inner portcullis and as he moves to the outer one the tower from the middle tower opens, readying his sword, he sees that it is Lyonessa, Arocken and Argent. He drops the outer portcullis then turns toward them. "It seems we've cleared the area," he will say. "Good work, all of you."

Scanning the courtyard and the tower tops from this point, Validar sees Grondar re-enter the courtyard and calls down to him. "Grondar! The Gatehouse is free! Send word to bring the refugees forward!"

"Argent, since you can fly, send word to the rest of the Guardians that we need to assemble everyone together. Once the gates are all closed we will meet in the courtyard. Lyonesssa, can you go to find those that entered the main towers and have them ready to close the portcullis on the main gate when the refugees arrive? I think I see Lord Corley and Laucian on the far towertops. Arocken, come with me to bar the inner gates to seal off the portcullis below."

Lord Validar will lead Arocken down to the courtyard and together they will close and bar the heavy wooden inner gates on the two portcullis which lead into the city. Waiting for the refugees to arrive, Validar will make sure that all of the Corunglain flags are flying from each tower top, if the goblins have torn them down. We need to let anyone in the city know that this place is under friendly control.

Lord Validar will also check the Ballistas on the tower tops as well and load each of them aiming into the city. If there is time, he will man the one on the left inner tower until the refugees arrive.

Argent:

Satisfied that her Magic Missile did some damage to the archers in the far tower, Argent turns her attention back to the stubborn winch.

Another door is thrown open and the Invoker spins, prepared to cast another Magic Missile. Instead it is the elf known as Arocken!

"Arocken! I need help in lowering these gates. I have not the strength to do it alone!"

Aided by the elf, the first gate goes down with a tremendous crash. As we lower the next, Lyonessa joins us.

"Several orcs attacked, but one ran off that way! We better take care of him before he can cause more trouble!"

Argent points off in the direction opposite the way the others came. The inside of the far tower is a large barracks and there are only two ways to go. Up to the roof or out to the next battlement. Going that way we find Lord Validar and the missing orc.

"I see you've taken care of my missing orc, Lord Validar. Thank you."

The last of the city gates are lowered and the Gatehouse is secured.

"As you command, Lord Validar. Lyonessa, I'll send word to Lord Corley and Laucian. Why not see if you can locate Lord Acerion and Chareos? They were in the other tower the last I saw them."

Argent will then fly to the tower where the orc archers were and relay Lord Validar's wishes to Lord Corley and Laucian.

After completing that task, Argent will return to Lord Validar for her next set of instructions.

"Lord Validar, my flight spell will last for at least another hour and I still have combat magic in memory. While hovering of the city we could make out several other gatehouses being attacked, along with the Duke's Fortress which was being bombarded with flaming catapult fire. Perhaps I should try to make contact with one of the other gatehouses that are under siege? My magic may be able help drive off their attackers, if only for a short time. Your thoughts, my lord?"

Sherra smirks and watches the orc plummet from the tower. She cringes a bit at the sound of his body hitting unforgiving ground. The fall is indeed much deadlier than say from the rigging of a ship. She doesn't let the distraction affect her any further as there still seems to be enemies to kill.
Sherra continues to fire on the rooftop archers. One more falls to her bow. The next thing the archers know, Lord Corley and Laucian are among them. After a very brief scuffle, the last of the archers are put down.
Sounds of fighting erupt from the top of the tower and soon she can pick out the forms of Corley and Laucian. Looking across the way, she sees several of her companions have now joined up with Argent. Looking around carefully, there doesn't seem to be any more foes, and the gatehouse is secured with the ringing of falling portcullis.

Satisfied with the outcome, Sherra wills her magical armor back to its more custom design and takes a step off the gatehouse roof, confident in the magic of her ring to save her from death. If anyone notes her plunge, she will merely smile at them once on the ground and walk away as if what she had done was a completely normal and acceptable way to get down.

"My pleasure. But you really must take care where you leave such things in the future," the noble warrior says with a grin, unseen due to his visored helm.

The last of the city gates are lowered and the Gatehouse is secured.

I think I see Lord Corley and Laucian on the far tower tops. Arocken, come with me to bar the inner gates to seal off the portcullis below."

"As you command, Lord Validar. Lyonessa, I'll send word to Lord Corley and Laucian. Why not see if you can locate Lord Acerion and Chareos? They were in the other tower the last I saw them."

"Very well," Lord Validar will respond.

After completing that task, Argent will return to Lord Validar for her next set of instructions.

"Lord Validar, my flight spell will last for at least another hour and I still have combat magic in memory. While hovering over the city we could make out several other gatehouses being attacked, along with the Duke's Fortress which was being bombarded with flaming catapult fire. Perhaps I should try to make contact with one of the other gatehouses that are under siege? My magic may be able help drive off their attackers, if only for a short time. Your thoughts, my lord?"

"That is important information, Argent. My next plan was to send out scouts including those of you with aerial abilties to find out what is happening in the rest of the city."

"We need to let the others know that help is available and also to allay some of the attacks on the city. My thoughts are that the Duke's Fortress is the most important area of defense and the most necessary to assist. But all are important."

Lord Validar considers for a moment. "I think we should not tarry and if we hit them in waves the enemy may believe there are more of us than there are." After another moment of thoughts, he concludes, "We need you to hit the attackers on the Duke's fortress with as much magic as you have left. First get a rough estimate of what is attacking there and from where. Then hit them as hard as you can. If there is the opportunity to make contact with anyone that would be good, but do not set yourself up to be attacked by Corunglain's defenders."

"If you are able to do reconnaissance flights over the other gatehouses before returning to determine whether there is fighting, how badly it is going or whether any have fallen that would be great information and very helpful in our continued attack plans."

"Before you go can you do a quick check of the immediate area to let me know if there are enemies massed at all in the area of this Gatehouse?"

Laucian
Nocking an arrow to his bow he proceeds to secure the kitchen area. Finding no hostiles he makes to follow Lord Corley through the tower. The search for humaniods is fast paced and they soon reach the tower's hatch.

Hearing humaniods above he makes ready his bow and follows Lord Corley into the fray. After a brief scrimmish with the remaining orcs the tower is won.

Looking to Lord Corley,"You fought well this day my friend."
Argent will then fly to the tower where the orc archers were and relay Lord Validar's wishes to Lord Corley and Laucian.
"We will do so. Would you be as so kind as to tell Lord Validar congratulations on a well executed plan. I do not think it could have been planned any better."

Afterward he will make his way to the controls and lower the gates after the refugees are secured within.
Making his way back to the tower battlements he makes note of the fires within the courtyard. Grabbing two orcs by their ankles he will drag them to the courtyard wall. Making sure not to block any doors nor hit any of his comrades or refugees he will yell, "Look out below!" as he begins dropping orcs off the tower walls (perferably in one pile), to bring them to the fires.

He begins doing so when he notices Sherra drop from the gatehouse," No!" As she lands softly he will catch his breath and say, "Are you mad woman!?" and she merely smiles in return.

Acerion

Acerion:

In the right-hand tower, Acerion's Holy Weapon lashes out two more times and two more orcs fall before it. Chareos steps in and whacks the remaining orc with his staff. The lone orog continues to advance.

Acerion steps forward to engage the orog. The orog tries to stab the paladin with his sword, but misses. Acerion does not and another falls to the Axe of the Valorous. Together with Chareos, they explore the rest of this tower and find no other foes.

Once it is clear that the tower is cleared of enemies, Acerion removes his helm to wipe his sweaty brow. He clasps a guantlet-encased hand on Chareos' shoulder and proclaims, "Good job, friend Chareos. Let us make sure that there are no more enemies lurking about."

With that, he puts his helm back on and exits the tower. With some relief, he sees a number of his friends and companions milling about on top of the towers or in the courtyard, and it becomes obvious their first objective has been secured. He will raise his axe above his head in salute to those who can see him in response to their valor this day.

After listening to Validar's instruction, Argent makes the job a little easier by doing some of it herself. "Of course, no problem," she will say simply and head down to the courtyard.

Relieved that the fight is over, Lyonessa reaches the courtyard to hear Laucian cry out to Sherra. She spots the woman also in the courtyard and sees her smiling. Obviously she missed whatever Sherra had done to make Laucian cry out.

Lyonessa heads towards the tower she suspects Lord Acerion and Chareos to be in and will relay Lord Validar's instruction upon finding them.

Entering Corunglain

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:

Ivy doesn't appear to have any questions, so Grondar races back across the bridge into Corunglain. Surveying the courtyard, Grondar feels a bit of intestinal discomfort at the gruesome scene. However, there are more important things at the moment - particularly locating the other Guardian.

One of the portculises leading into the city drops into place with a resounding crash. Looking up, Grondar can make out figures on the wall near there that look like Validar, Argent, Arocken and Lyonessa.
Validar wrote:Scanning the courtyard and the tower tops from this point, Validar sees Grondar re-enter the courtyard and calls down to him. "Grondar! The Gatehouse is free! Send word to bring the refugees forward!"
"I'd be happy to!" Grondar calls in reply. As he turns to leave, he notes Argent taking to the air once again on some unknown task.

It is not long before Grondar reaches Ivy and the refugees. "It looks like we have liberated the gatehouse. Validar has asked that we bring all of our new friends into the gatehouse where we can aid and protect them properly." That said, Grondar will return to his position in carrying the new mother's litter into the gatehouse. He is careful to make sure that he doesn't go too fast for Po.

Po -

"This may not be the most exciting of tasks", Ivy will finally say, "But it is an important one. These people need our protection. I am sure that we will all be sick of battle by the time this is all over with."

Po will nod his agreement and smile weakly.

Soon, the dwarf comes back and he calls to move the refugees forward. Po takes up his position on the liter and helps to carry the new mother into the Gatehouse with Grondar.

Once finished he will arm himself and gather with the rest of the Guardians at Lord Validar's direction.

Arocken -
Arocken joins Lord Validar to bar the inner gates to the city which closes off the Gatehouse from attackers in the city.

He will then assemble with the rest of the Guardians. If it takes some time for everyone to gather, then he will assist Laucian in the disposal of the dead bodies on the fire.

Ivy:

Out across the bridge, Ivy can make out Grondar approaching bearing two more survivors.
Grondar wrote:He screeches to a halt in front of Ivy, kicking up a small cloud of dust in the process, then sets the kids down. "Hi. The others had found these kids inside and I found Lyonessa protecting them. I brought them back here to be with others from the city and to free up Lyonessa to help the others.
"A sensible precaution", Ivy will answer.
Grondar wrote:"As far as I could tell, the courtyard had been cleared. From the sounds I heard, our friends appear to be busy clearing the towers and walls. I don't think anyone has been seriously injured. If everything is okay here, I'd better get back and help."
Ivy is relieved to hear this bit of news. "Good we'll be able to move out soon. Thank you!"

Turning to the refugees, Ivy will announce, "My associates have nearly cleared the Gatehouse. Be ready to move on a moment's notice!"

Grondar returns just a few minutes later. During that time, Ivy has the group ready to move. The newborn is in her arms once more. She'll let the refugees pass over the bridge first and then she and Grondar and Po can bring the mother across last.

Corley:

The tower has been cleared of the enemy. Lord Corley pauses to catch his breath.
Looking to Lord Corley, "You fought well this day my friend."
"As did you, Laucian, but this day is not yet done. We must prepare for the arrival of the refugees and see to the other defenses. Much to do."

A few moments later, Lady Argent arrives bearing her message. "It shall be done, Lady Argent. This I do promise you."

Corley will retreat to the middle level of the tower. Before moving over the Gatehouse, Corley will check the door that leads out to the outer wall from this tower and make sure it is secured against intrusion. Then he will step out on the Gatehouse Roof.

The area where Lady Argent's fireball went off is still smoldering a bit and there are numerous dead bodies there. After locating the gatehouse controls, Corley will wait for the refugees to arrive.

In the meantime, he'll call out to Lord Validar in the courtyard.

"We'll need to clear these structures of all the dead invaders, my friend. The tower Laucian and I investigated had dead goblins right inside the front door. Perhaps we should put them in the other tower for the time being?"

Once all the refugees are in the Gatehouse, Corley will raise the drawbridge and then begin to lower to the portcuillis.

Giving a smile he will respond, "And you my friend. It would seem we work well together. Come let us cleanse the place of their retched smell."

Upon reaching the courtyard he sees several of the others milling about. Soon Lyonessa finds them and tells them of their orders. He will reply, "It is good to see you well. How did the fire potion work out for you?"

"Yes, I doubt it will be long now," Grondar says before zipping away.

Upon his return, they make ready to move the refugees inside. Due to the restrictions of moving a large group - particularly one where some are not in the best of health - this process takes a little while. Fortunately, it goes well enough and they are soon inside the protective walls of the Vesubian Gate.

The next task is the get the refugees settled in. "Validar! Are there rooms here where these people can be housed for the time being?"

After the refugees are taken care of, Grondar will visit each of the Guardians to determine the level of injuries currently in effect and whether anyone needs healing right away.

"And you as well," Lyonessa replies. "Both of you," she will add quickly to include the paladin. "The potion worked well, although the last of it has been used up. Was that your only flask of it? It was a most unique experience I must say."

Securing the Gatehouse...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

"My pleasure. But you really must take care where you leave such things in the future," the noble warrior says with a grin, unseen due to his visored helm.

"Oh, no. I claim no ownership of that thing. Those things creep me out!"

"Now you DID say that it was YOUR orc," Validar will retort.

With that, he puts his helm back on and exits the tower. With some relief, he sees a number of his friends and companions milling about on top of the towers or in the courtyard, and it becomes obvious their first objective has been secured. He will raise his axe above his head in salute to those who can see him in response to their valor this day.

Validar returns the salute when he sees Acerion emerge into the courtyard, before continuing on his business.

Argent lands nearby after signalling everyone.

"That's a lot to digest, but I think I understand. I check out the immediate area and then return before heading to the fortress."

"That is correct. I want to know if anything noticed us or if there may be assembled groups in the area that we can take out of action quickly."

While Lord Validar and Arocken bar the inner gates, Lord Corley call down from the Gatehouse walls.

In the meantime, he'll call out to Lord Validar in the courtyard.

"We'll need to clear these structures of all the dead invaders, my friend. The tower Laucian and I investigated had dead goblins right inside the front door. Perhaps we should put them in the other tower for the time being?"

Validar will call back to his friend. "It looks like Laucian has already started that." He points to the elf dropping orcs off the top of the tower. "I would rather just bring them all out to the courtyard and burn them as well as any other carnage that may remain from the attack. We need to stop the spread of any disease and better to just be done with it!"

The next task is the get the refugees settled in. "Validar! Are there rooms here where these people can be housed for the time being?"

After the refugees are taken care of, Grondar will visit each of the Guardians to determine the level of injuries currently in effect and whether anyone needs healing right away.

"There are barracks rooms. I would like to try and fit most of the refugees into those two towers," Validar will say, indicating the two towers to the left of the Gatehouse entrance. "It will be easy to keep track of them as well as keep them safer. We will need to know if any of the group have soldiering experience and can act as guards, or eyes on the towers. Also please see if you can indentify any of the older children that may be able to act as communications runners within the gatehouse. There are not many of us to defend all these walls as yet."

"We will also need any of the women to check the food and water stores that remain here and clean up any of the damage that the invaders may have done. All of our clerics may be needed to help supply food and water to this group, especially if we attract more soldiers to the defenses and this combat ends up protracted."

Once the refugees are inside the gate, Lord Corley raises the drawbridge and drops the portcullis. They will then bar the inner gates like before and close the pikewall defense as well. Then the refugees are directed to the barracks in the side towers and clean-up is begun.

As everyone is together, Lord Validar will address the group, although a few may be absent on various tasks. "Congratulations to each of you. We took this Gatehouse with little injury and little difficulty. However, our work is just begun. Argent has informed me that the Duke's Fortress is under direct assault, as are many of the other Gatehouses throughout the city."

"We need to secure this location, but we are also going to have to make attacks at other enemies as we are able. Argent is scouting the immediate area for any nearby attackers and then is going to attack the invaders at the Duke's Fortress using up the remainder of her attack spells. She will then return and set up her Secure Shelter, which the mages will use for rest to regain their spells. We will need attack spells as soon as possible."

"Those of you who have attack spells remaining will have a chance to use them before also retiring for the evening. I would like Acerion and Chareos to go out and allow Chareos to make some attacks on the closest Gatehouse that is under attack. Chareos will then be able to retir as well. Then if your new steed is up to the challenge I would like Lyonessa to use Chareos' Wand of Lightning (who has already agreed to it) and make some aerial attacks on the enemies attacking the other Gatehouses, and especially the Duke's Fortress. If we can relieve them, then we have potential allies in a larger counter-attack to drive back the enemy invaders."

"We need our scouts to get into the towers overlooking the city and prepare to defend against any humanoids who noticed our attack. We should bar all the access from the outer walls connecting to the two main towers as well. The fighters should prepare themselves for another attack, especially should we locate any groups in this area of the city. Our work is not ended this night. There is still much to do and much blood will yet be spilt, but we shall not falter until Corunglain is won!"

Following Validar's instructions, he will work with Ivy to get the refugees settled into the two indicated towers. He'll ask Ivy to follow up with the women with regard to getting them organized to check the stores and make the area livable. At the same time, he'll be interacting with the men to find any that could serve as watchmen on the walls. They don't even need to be able to wear armor or bear weapons. Any with decent eyesight and the ability to keep watch from the top of one of the towers will be recruited - women could serve in this capacity as well, which he will mention to Ivy. Hopefully, they'll find enough for at least two shifts on each of the towers - or at least the three inner towers.

If possible, he will also try to find a few that are capable of running the winches and such to open and close the gates for when they need to get in and out. Since Orin is the functional leader of the refugees right now, Grondar will get him involved in organizing the able men for the needed functions.

Validar's second part of the conversation will cause him to comment, "I'm sure that as long as my pegasus will accept Lyonessa then there shouldn't be any problems with that. I know with two riders along with the weight of arms and armor these trips are going to have to be short, otherwise the risk to the animal is too great."

Pegasus shuttle...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Acerion looks to Chareos and says, "Ready to do our part again this night?" Assuming Chareos is ready, Acerion will prepare to head out once more in hopes to strike a devistating blow against the invaders.

"Argent will have already struck by the time you arrive there, so the two of you as the second wave will be at a point as they are recovering from the first attack. I am confident that you will be able to strike a telling blow."

"I understand that the pegasus' agreement is also needed and I hope he will be acceptable of the bard. If not, then Chareos should use the wand and we will be limited to two waves instead of three. Can you determine before leaving if your mount will accept her?"

"I do understand that two riders will cause the pegasus to be slower and to tire more. Perhaps you can land across the Vesubian
River temporarily to rest should it be necessary. As for the weight, that is part of the reason that I suggested Lyonessa to go as she is much smaller than Chareos. Were it possible for you yourself to use the lightning wand then we would do so. Unfortunately, it does require a mage to wield. If fortune favors us then perhaps we will be able to strike enough in the three waves to drive off the attackers on the Duke's Fortress."

Grondar and Ivy begin the tasks of settling the refugees into the towers. With luck they can all be fit comfortably into the larger one, which also has a kitchen and pantry. The dining area could be converted into more sleeping areas if necessary. The archers man the towers and watch the nearby city as we await Argent's quick return on her scouting trip. Validar himself mans the ballista on the central of the three smaller towers, while he waits.
