Yusef, the wandering Priest of Celestian has joined the expedition. The Mudlark continues its lazy journey up river. The ship's speed is not particularly impressive and it seems that you can walk as fast as the Mudlark is sailing. The fact that the ship is on the move around the clock helps it reach its destination much faster.
The first day on the river passes without incident. The ship's cook fries up fish for the evening meal. Shortly after dawn of the second day, the Mudlark sails past the small village of Verge. Near the end of the second day, Threshold comes into view.
Threshold reminds you of a frontier town built on the shores of a small lake. It is primarily built of wood, a resource in abundance in this area. A high stone wall surrounds the small town. You'd estimate that perhaps a thousand people live here.
"Threshold reminds you of an onion, in that it grew in layers," Sherwood will explain. "A new wall to surround the growing town has been added twice in the last five hundred years. So the portions closest to the river are the oldest, while those furthest away are the newest."
"Part of Threshold extends to the small island of Fogor. No wall surrounds it and it's where most of the river boats dock. Two stone bridges connect the island to the mainland at the northern and southern tips. Keep your weapons covered and do not cast any spells while in town."
"Fogor Island is the 'seedy' part of town, so be on guard," Sherwood continues. "We'll not be staying there long."
The Mudlark docks at one of the open slips. Lines are tossed and the ship is drawn up to the dock. Sherwood thanks the captain for the safe trip and leads the group off the ship.
Fogor Island is somewhat dirty and dingy. The streets and alleys are far too close together for comfort, giving the place a claustrophobic feeling. It's even worse at night as street lights are few and far between. Under one streetlight, a trio of scantily clad attractive women beckons for Sherwood and Yusef to join them-- for a price of course.
Sherwood continues to lead the way off Fogor Island and to the mainland portion of Threshold. Rounding a corner, something small barrels into Sherwood's legs. At first glance it appears to be a child. The lad bounces off of Sherwood and lands on his backside.
"Hey, watch where yer goin', you overgrown weed!", the small figure cries out in a decidedly unchildlike voice.
Half a dozen seedy looking men sprint into view. They wear leather armor and carry clubs and shortswords with them.
"Just hand over the thief and there won't be any trouble," the leader of the band says. "And you don't want to be causing trouble."
"This is just a misunderstanding," the small man will respond, looking back towards the group. "I just found some coins and these thugs are trying to rob me of me fairly found prize!"
The small man, a halfling you can tell by now, does a double take as he looks at the group. "Kylie, me lass, is that you?"
Kylie can immediately tell that the halfling is none other than her old mentor, the Master Finder Rat!
Now what?

Try it and find out!
New Beginnings
Kylie:
Later, when the opportunity arises, Kylie pulls Lilia aside. "We might want to keep an eye on Yusef; there's something about him that I don't really trust."
As they arrive into Threshold, Kylie watches the city approach from the bow of the ship. It seems an odd town, and Sherwood's description bears that out. Fogor island is described as seedy, but doesn't appear any rougher than where she grew up. She takes note of Sherwood's admonition regarding spells and weapons.
They are not far off the boat when trouble seems to find them. A small child-like person bumps into Sherwood, followed by some local ne'er-do-wells. The voice of the small person sounds familiar and Kylie takes a closer look even as the men make their accusations.
"Well, hello there, Master Rat! A pleasure to see you again. Have you done something naughty?" she asks with a grin. Apparently boring has already fled the scene...
Her friend's words do nothing to relieve the misgivings in Kylie's mind. Apparently her own mixed heritage will make her search for her mother that much more difficult. "Thank you for the information, Lilia. It seems my quest is destined to be difficult."Lilia wrote:"That may not be the case, Kylie. We elves prize our home forest greatly and do not let outsiders in. Apart from Alfheim Town, very few non-elves, outside of invading orcs, have ever sat foot in our woods. Such a thing is not permitted."
Glancing at Sherwood, Lilia will add, "Although there have been exceptions made for certain individuals. It is entirely possible that your father was not allowed in because he is human. There are those elves who consider the joining of a human and an elf to be-- unnatural."
"Anything is possible," Kylie admits. "From what I was told, they met along the northern edge of the Elfholds, but whether her clan was based there, I do not know."Lilia wrote:"Of course", Lilia will agree. Another thought does come to her mind. "Is it possible that your mothers clan was not within the Elfholds? Like Nariya's clan here?"
"Boring and quiet is just fine with me," Kylie says with a smile, "though it seems that things never work out quite that way.Sherwood wrote:Sherwood will seem pleased with Kylie's response. "You adapt to the strengths of those around you. As you suggest, stealth may be this groups largest asset. While I am unsure what lies ahead, I find it hard to believe that we'll be encountering any large organized resistance. These mountains have been mostly quiet for centuries, apart from the occasional drow raids mentioned earlier. This mission may well be quite boring."
Yusef wrote:"My father's family lives in Elcadan. Perhaps you have heard of the DeVille merchant clan? They are without honor or compassion, and I do not wish to be associated with them."
The name doesn't mean anything to Kylie; she had never really had any contact with the rich people of the city. Sherwood does seem to recognise it, however, and appears to be content with the man's story.Sherwood wrote:"I do not blame you there, Yusef", Sherwood will say. "I am familiar with their history and it does explain a great many things. The fact that you've overcome your beginnings and became a follower of Celestian does you credit."
It seems that coming from a rich family does not always equate to a pampered life as she had thought. That his mother was a slave, and used as a bedwarmer by his father implies a tough life indeed. Though she knows her not, Kylie's heart goes out to the woman. "I am sorry to hear that, Yusef, you and your mother have had a difficult life."Yusef wrote:Yusef winces. "While I have never actually been in that area of the city, Dog Alley has a fearsome reputation. It is not a good place for a little girl to grow up.
"My father's family lives in the merchant quarter in a large estate, and that is where I grew up. My mother was a slave to the family, and thus so was I. I am very fortunate to have escaped, as they are despicable people who casually commit the greatest of atrocities."
Yusef wrote:"Thank you, Sherwood. From what little I have heard, the road you travel appears to be an adventurous one, and I would be very interested to join your quest. I believe you will find my skills to be very useful on such a path." He noted the mention of someone named Nightmist, but has no idea who that might be. Still, he is intrigued.
Kylie pauses to eye Yusef critically. "I am not opposed to his joining us, at least for a time."Lilia wrote:"I defer to your judgment in this matter", Lilia will diplomatically state.
Yusef wrote:"From the sound of it, I suspect there is a far grander tale here, would any of you be willing to share it with me as we travel up-river?"
Sherwood answers the question as far as is really necessary, to Kylie says nothing.Sherwood wrote:"There's really not much to tell, Yusef. We have reason to believe that an elf named Nightmist has vital information. We have reason to believe that she dwells up in the Black Peak Mountains. Our goal is to find her and question her."

Travelling Ever Onward
Yusef:
Eventually, the group settles in for the remainder of the trip. Yusef splits the time between meditating and watching the scenery as they glide up-river.
When they arrive in Threshold, Yusef collects his horse and small bag of personal belongings and joins the group in debarking. Sherwood's description of the city proves interesting. "The city has grown quite a bit in the last few centuries, then. I wonder what has caused the influx of people?"
Shortly after departing the ship, they encounter a halfling being pursued by a gang of local toughs. Yusef has seen their like many times in the last couple years. Surprisingly, Kylie appears to know the halfling. "Kylie? You know this man?"
The men accuse the halfling of theft, and the halfling claims he just found the money. Doesn't seem a very likely story to him. "You found money lying around? That hardly seems likely, mister Rat. Perhaps you should give it back to these nice gentlemen."
Yusef whispers over to Sherwood. "You said no weapons or spells, eh? Perhaps then if this gets ugly, it would be best to let me handle it?"
"I have heard wondrous things of the Elfholds, Lilia; I would love to visit, but not being an elf, I doubt the opportunity will come my way."Lilia wrote:"I am from the Elfholds to the north, priest. My clan is one of the eight major clans. It is not surprising that you are unfamiliar with them, as I was just telling my friend here, non-elf outsiders in the Elfholds are very rare."
"Thank you, Sherwood. It has been quite a journey, yet I like to believe that my true path has only recently opened before me."Sherwood wrote:"I do not blame you there, Yusef", Sherwood will say. "I am familiar with their history and it does explain a great many things. The fact that you've overcome your beginnings and became a follower or Celestian does you credit."
"Thank you, Kylie," Yusef replies. "It is my mother that really deserves your sympathy. She has been a slave for longer than I have been alive, and remains so to this day. It is my goal to free her some day, though I have not yet the resources to do so."Kylie wrote:"I am sorry to hear that, Yusef, you and your mother have had a difficult life."
"My life is anything but dull", Sherwood will agree. "You are welcomed to join our expedition."
"Sherwood's comment causes Yusef to chuckle. "Thank you for accepting me. I know it is not easy, particularly considering my unusual appearance."Kylie wrote:Kylie pauses to eye Yusef critically. "I am not opposed to his joining us, at least for a time."
It is clear that there is more, but Yusef chooses not to pry. He is new to the group, and trust is often hard-won."There's really not much to tell, Yusef. We have reason to believe that an elf named Nightmist has vital information. We have reason to believe that she dwells up in the Black Peak Mountains. Our goal is to find her and question her."

Nariya:
Nariya listens to Sherwood's explanation of Threshold with little interest. Not that Sherwood drones on, but rather that human settlements are all the same to Nariya: too many people in too small of a space. One last thing Sherwood says does bring comment to her lips.
"Fogor Island is the 'seedy' part of town, so be on guard," Sherwood continues. "We'll not be staying there long."
"The quicker the better," states Nariya. "Not just Fogor Island, but all of Threshold."
Nariya focuses on the fact that she can still see the night sky as she manuevers with the others through the narrow streets. It is all she can do to keep her composure, but the fact that the streets seem quite deserted at this hour does help. Suddenly, her attention is drawn to the scene unfolding as a small child, no, a halfling, runs into Sherwood.
"Hey, watch where yer goin', you overgrown weed!", the small figure cries out in a decidedly unchildlike voice.

Despite Yusef's whispered words, Nariya picks them up quite easily. "They don't seem to care about the supposed 'no naked weapons' rule," she will say pointing to their clubs and shortswords.
"We have no time or desire for this," Nariya will admit. "Are you going to get involved Kylie or can we press on?"
Nariya has no idea what the relationship between the two of them might be or may have been, but she's expecting that everyone will be drawn into this confrontation, so she slides her hands slowly to the hilts of her swords in anticipation.

Lilia:
Yusef is allowed into the group and the trip upstream continues. This is much more to Lilia's liking. Travel without saddle sores or having to direct a mount. Just lay back and let the crew sail the boat. No doubt an elf invented sailing ships!
The Elf Maiden will be shocked to see that Threshold is built entirely out of wood and that logging is running rampant in this area. However, this was much the case back in Twin Forks, so upon reflection, should not be a big surprise. If they continue on in this manner, the forests in this area will be no more!
The panic Lilia feels is mercifully interrupted by the sudden appearance of a halfling who seems to know Kylie. In turn, the halfling is being chased by others who are accusing him of stealing. A halfling thief. What a surprise.
Threats are exchanged; a battle seems imminent. Lilia will steathfully grab her Manabow and have it at the ready. If a fight does break out, she'll aim and fire her bow at the most convenient target.

Sherwood
Sherwood:
The expedition reaches Threshold and we find ourselves crossing Fogor Island at night.
"Sorry, fair ladies, but alas I am under the protection of a trio of fierce elf maidens and you'd have to fight your way through them first. Perhaps another time?"
If the men still attack, Sherwood will go for his swords and defend himself.
"Always causing trouble, aren't you Rat?"

"One more night, Nariya," Sherwood will say a soothing voice. "Then we'll be outdoors for the rest of the mission.""The quicker the better," states Nariya. "Not just Fogor Island, but all of Threshold."
The tight streets of Fogor Island are upsetting to the elves who prize wide open spaces. Sherwood plots the quickest course that he knows through this maze. Perhaps then if this gets ugly, it would be best to let me handle it?"
"Patience, Nariya, this will only take a moment.""We have no time or desire for this," Nariya will admit. "Are you going to get involved Kylie or can we press on?"
Turning back to the men chasing Rat, Sherwood will say, "Actually, my friend it is YOU who doesn't want to be causing any trouble. If my friend says he found what you want, then it does seem that it is you who are really the thieves. I am leading an experienced party of adventurers and they'll be able to cut you all down with spells and arrows before you can even get within striking distance. So, I suggest you go back the way you came and call it an evening.""Just hand over the thief and there won't be any trouble," the leader of the band says. "And you don't want to be causing trouble."
If the men still attack, Sherwood will go for his swords and defend himself.

I do what is necessary.
Rat
Rat:
Clearly, it was a case of mistaken identity. Yet another case of the tall folk picking on the little folk. After all, how was he to know that pouch of coins actually belonged to someone? It was just sitting on the table there, right out in the open unprotected.
And so Rat did what he does best and found the abandoned pouch of coins. Then these ruffians showed up claiming that it was theirs. There were no identifying marks on the pouch to provide any clue to ownership and possession was the law. I had it, they didn't.
Alas, as the tall folk are wont to do, they got nasty and so Rat found himself racing along the dark alleys of Fogor Island. Rounding a corner he found himself face to legs of yet another human.
"Hey, watch where yer goin', you overgrown weed!" Rat cried out.
The small man, a halfling you can tell by now, does a double take as he looks at the group. "Kylie, me lass, is that you?"
"Ho, ho, you boys are in for it now! That'll teach to go around bossin' the small folk and tryin' to steal their fairly earned prizes! This here be Sherwood, the arch-wizard! He'll make mince meat outta ya and use yer innards for his dark magic rituals! Run while you still can, you bullies!"

Have ye taken leave of yer senses, lass? Have ye forgotten everything I've taught you since you took up with them spellcasting folks? Aye, the shame of it all. Ye had such promise too. Me legacy tarnished once again.""Well, hello there, Master Rat! A pleasure to see you again. Have you done something naughty?" Kylie asks with a grin. Apparently boring has already fled the scene...

I was just minding my own business, not botherin' a soul when I found a lost coin pouch. It's these claim jumpers here that are causin' all the trouble! Once we have completed the tasks that we have set for ourselves, perhaps we may be able to aid you in freeing your mother."Yusef wrote:"Thank you, Kylie," Yusef replies. "It is my mother that really deserves your sympathy. She has been a slave for longer than I have been alive, and remains so to this day. It is my goal to free her some day, though I have not yet the resources to do so."
"You're welcome," Kylie answers. She looks at him for a moment before asking the question that is perhaps on everyone's minds. "If it is not too forward of me to ask, why exactly do you look the way that you do?"Yusef wrote:"Sherwood's comment causes Yusef to chuckle. "Thank you for accepting me. I know it is not easy, particularly considering my unusual appearance."
Nariya wrote:"The quicker the better," states Nariya. "Not just Fogor Island, but all of Threshold."
"You know, I was just thinking how much this reminds me of home," Kylie says with a smile. "Not that that is a good thing, mind you."Sherwood wrote:"One more night, Nariya," Sherwood will say a soothing voice. "Then we'll be outdoors for the rest of the mission."
"I'm not sure I - or we - have any choice at this point. Besides, Rat is an old friend of mine, so I really should see this resolved before continuing on."Nariya wrote:"We have no time or desire for this," Nariya will admit. "Are you going to get involved Kylie or can we press on?"
"Ah, my appologies, old friend. I wouldn't want to besmirch your pristine reputation," Kylie says with a snicker. "How callous of me."Rat wrote:"That be Master Finder Rat, ye lass! Master Rat makes me sound like something that chitters and runs around in the sewers with a long tail! What? Me do something improper? Have ye taken leave of yer senses, lass? Have ye forgotten everything I've taught you since you took up with them spellcasting folks? Aye, the shame of it all. Ye had such promise too. Me legacy tarnished once again."
Sherwood wrote:Turning back to the men chasing Rat, Sherwood will say, "Actually, my friend it is YOU who doesn't want to be causing any trouble. If my friend says he found what you want, then it does seem that it is you who are really the thieves. I am leading an experienced party of adventurers and they'll be able to cut you all down with spells and arrows before you can even get within striking distance. So, I suggest you go back the way you came and call it an evening."
Kylie has nothing to say to the local toughs. Instead, she just stands there looking casual and relaxed. She has plenty of spells available, and will use them if it becomes necessary, though she doubts it will.Rat wrote:"Ho, ho, you boys are in for it now! That'll teach to go around bossin' the small folk and tryin' to steal their fairly earned prizes! This here be Sherwood, the arch-wizard! Yusef:
Yusef will move gracefully and confidently toward the men who had been chasing the halfling. "Perhaps it would be best if you left before this degenerates into something that you won't like the results of. Okay?"
"Should that time come, then your aid would be greatly appreciated," Yusef says with a bow.Kylie wrote:Kylie hesitates for a second. "That is a worthy goal. Once we have completed the tasks that we have set for ourselves, perhaps we may be able to aid you in freeing your mother."
Yusef pauses and sighs. Should have expected this, really, though it's not something he likes to talk about. "No, I suppose it needs to be said. As I understand it, my father's family consorts with creatures of the lower planes. Thus, I have some of their blood running through my veins."Kylie wrote:"You're welcome," Kylie answers. Nariya wrote:Despite Yusef's whispered words, Nariya picks them up quite easily. "They don't seem to care about the supposed 'no naked weapons' rule," she will say pointing to their clubs and shortswords.
"Very well," Yusef says. "I just don't see any reason in violating the laws if it isn't necessary. Since I trained in handling multiple attackers barehanded, and none of these seem like particularly skilled opponents, I just thought I would offer to demonstrate some of the value of having me in your company."Sherwood wrote:"We can defend ourselves and as you noted, the rules here on Fogor Island are not strictly enforced. However, I doubt this situation is going to require much skill or any spells to resolve."
Yusef nods. "I will take your word for it, for the moment." The others seem inclined to support the halfling, so Yusef will take that as good enough.Rat wrote:"As I told me former student, cat eyes, I am Master Finder Rat. "Sherwood? Did you know about this taint?"
Inquiring elves want to know!
Lilia wasn't really paying that much attention to what was going on around her until she heard those words. Sherwood:
"The Deville's were a noble family until a hundred years ago or so when Baron Matthew Deville sold his soul to Orcus and was transformed into a vampire. His daughter Eleanor was transformed into a succubus in a dark ritual. Yusef is a direct ancestor of Eleanor and that's where his unusual appearance comes from. He's not a demon himself, just one whose bloodline has been tainted by demon blood."
"Matthew and Eleanor were destroyed a long time ago and the Deville's lost most of their noble status. They are little more than a merchant family now with no real authority."
Sherwood will stand aside and give Yusef access to the street toughs.
"Yes, I do," Sherwood will answer. "As I stated previously, there are no evil priests of Celestian. Yusef here has risen above his beginnings and made something good out of himself."Yusef pauses and sighs. Should have expected this, really, though it's not something he likes to talk about. Rat will say as if hurt by those words. "I don't know what you been talkin' about Sherwood! I'm the innocent party here! I was just minding my own business, not botherin' a soul when I found a lost coin pouch. It's these claim jumpers here that are causin' all the trouble! Probably had too much ale and can no longer think straight, I'd wager! Aye, let's rob the little person since he can't defend himself! It's a plot, I tell you! Why, it's like a small folk can't ply an honest trade anymore…"

While passing through Fogor Island on their way to the mainland portion of Threshold, the adventurers have bumped into Kylie's former mentor, the halfling Master Finder Rat. Rat was being chased by several thugs claiming that the halfling had stolen something of theirs. This accusation was denied by Rat who claims he only found an abandoned coin purse.
Upon realizing just who he had run into, Rat took a more aggressive stand against his pursuers.
The thugs will exchange worried glances and their resolve seems to weaken. This is followed up by Yusef closing in on the men.
The remaining thugs exchange worried more glances and then back off.
"We'll let you go for now, halfling! Just don't come back here again!"
The gang then collects their downed man and runs off.
Now what?

"You don't look so tough!" one of the thugs states as he pushes his way to the front of their ranks. The street tough rushes Yusef and wildly swings his club. The attempt misses badly and Yusef retaliates almost faster than the eye can follow. Sherwood:
Sherwood watches with interest as Yusef lays out one of the thugs with only his bare hands. He appears to be skilled in some type of unarmed combat that Sherwood is unfamiliar with. The thugs lose their resolve and take off but not before making a veiled threat.
"There, that was easy enough", Sherwood will say to the group. "Come, let us continue our passage to the Hook and Hatchet. We'll be spending the night there and beginning our trip into the mountains in the morning."
Turning to our uninvited guest Sherwood will add, "As for you Master Finder Rat, would you do us the pleasure of your company? After all, we wouldn't want you to fall prey to any other unscrupulous persons here on Fogor Island."
Assuming that Rat agrees, Sherwood will continue to lead the group off of Fogor Island.

Lilia:
When the humans run off in search of easier prey, Lilia will store her longbow but keep her eyes and ears open for any other source of trouble. She is not surprised that Sherwood has the one called Rat go along with us. Easier to keep the halfling out of trouble that way. Besides, if he is a friend of Kylie, then it'll make her friend happy.
Lilia is eager to complete the trip through this claustrophobic place and waits impatiently for the group to continue on.
The Elf Maiden nods her understanding of Sherwood's words, but doesn't really know what to make of them. In her mind, anything associated with demons should be destroyed out of hand. But his being a Priest of Celestian, admittedly a god she knows very little about, and that they are not evil does soften her mood a bit. No doubt Yusef has struggled to find acceptance for all his life. Still he will bear watching in the future. Lilia's trust is not something that is easily earned.Sherwood wrote:"Yes, I do," Sherwood will answer. "As I stated previously, there are no evil priests of Celestian. Rat:
Rat watches from behind Sherwood's legs as Cat-Eyes make short work of the big bully with his wicked magic-like hands that deal death! Rat makes a mental note to not get up the ire of this being! Those hands could really do some damage!
"I can see why you have Cat-Eyes along with you, Sherwood! He your bodyguard or something? That was impressive!"
With that, Rat begins to walk away. After a few steps he pauses and looks back.
"Where we be goin' again, Sherwood?"
"I should say not, lass! After all, my reputation as a premiere finder of things lost is nearly legendary!"Kylie wrote:"Ah, my apologies, old friend. I wouldn't want to besmirch your pristine reputation," Kylie says with a snicker. "How callous of me."

"Well, I don't know, Sherwood…", Rat begins to say. "Pretty motley looking group you've got here. Kylie is a fine lass and a promising finder and you've got the death hands of Cat-Eyes here. A pair of elf-maidens who are no doubt lethal with their bows. Aye, it seems to be that you are in desperate need of the skills of a Master Finder such as meself. Nariya:
Nariya removes her hands from where they rested lightly upon the hilt of her swords after seeing Yusef's display that sent the thugs running for their mothers. Nariya isn't overly impressed however, for she feels quite certain any one of their band could have driven them off easily enough. Still, the situation is resolved.

"None too soon," Nariya replies and will follow off with the rest of them. Morning can not arrive quickly enough for her and until she is clear of Threshold, she won't really be completely at ease.

Yusef:
Lilia and Sherwood discuss his background for a moment. From her expression, it seems the elven woman finds his background distasteful. In truth, so does he, but there isn't anything he can do about it. "Thank you for your support, Sherwood. I'm not really happy about the circumstances of my birth, but the truth is that none of us get to choose our parents."
Yusef ignores most of the reparte between Rat, Kylie and Sherwood. They talk as old friends - or at least acquaintances - do. However, he does not share that relationship, so he stays out of it.
Not wanting to kill one so pitiful, Yusef had been careful not to use a killing blow. He kneels down to make sure that the man isn't seriously hurt. Once assured that the thug will recover in due time, Yusef rises and rejoins the others.
Sherwood invites Rat to join them, to which the halfling seems to agree - even if he does try to make it sound like it was his idea. However, Yusef notes that the diminutive Finder keeps referring to him as Cat-Eyes, which doesn't really please him. "Excuse me, Rat, but my name is Yusef. I'd prefer you call me by that rather than Cat-Eyes." Yusef gives him a look to let him know that he is serious in the request.

A nod and a small smile is Yusef's only reply before he moves forward to confront the men. One of the men gets up the courage to attack, and Yusef responds accordingly. The thug swings a club at him, but Yusef easily glides out of the way of the clumsy swing. Stepping forward, a palm strike to the chest is sufficient to knock the man off his feet and leave him stunned. The other toughs run off, shouting impotent threats.Sherwood wrote:"Ah, well, that's a different story then, Yusef. By all means, let us see what you can do."

New Beginnings
Kylie:
In response to her question, the man calling himself Yusef admits to being related to demons! As far as she is concerned, this more than justifies her suspicion of the man. Lilia seems to share her concern, even though she tries not to show it. Sherwood doesn't seem concerned, but he has always seemed a bit too trusting.
Sherwood and herself banter back and forth with Rat, her former mentor in the acquisitions trade. Kylie chuckles happily in such company. "I confess, Rat, all we bigger folk really do wish that we were lucky enough to be halflings like yourself."
Yusef easily avoids being clubbed by one of the thugs, and lays him out in the street with an odd style of punch. Though strange, it seems to be quite effective. Kylie raises one eyebrow as she regards the man. His grace and quickness appear to be the match for her own, and he has skills she has not encountered before.
Sherwood invites Rat to join them, at least for the night, and Kylie is happy to hear him accept. It will be good to catch up with her favorite halfling. "I'm glad we'll have a chance to chat a bit and catch up on each other's lives," Kylie says to Rat with an affectionate smile.
Not knowing the way to the inn Sherwood mentioned, Kylie falls in behind her mentors old and new for what will hopefully be a short trip with no more unpleasant encounters. Lilia and Nariya seem to be uncomfortable enough, so the less time they have to spend here the better.

The thugs menacing Rat have been driven off and the group continues onward. The rest of the trek through Fogor Island passes quickly and without incident. In a few minutes the group reaches the southern bridge that crosses over to the mainland. The bridge is stone and about fifty feet long.
Stepping off the bridge and into the mainland portion of Threshold is almost like stepping into another city. Unlike Fogor Island, this part of town is more open. The buildings are further apart and the feeling of claustrophobia fades.
In spite of the more roomy feel, the town still has the same smells of Fogor Island. Refuse and bodily waste end up in the gutters. An occasional dog will be spotted foraging for something to eat there.
Finally, the Hook and Hatchet comes into view. It is built along the inside of the original town wall. Since that time two more walls have been erected as Threshold grew in size.
The interior of the Hook and Hatchet is pleasant enough. The Inn is a favorite among the local constabulary and rarely sees trouble. The food and drink is of above average quality. However, there are only three rooms available for the night, but they can each sleep two.
GM Notes:
Welcome to the Hook and Hatchet. Decide who is going to share a room with whom. The plan is to depart Threshold in the morning on foot. Anything else you want to do before departing?

Any feeling of relief upon reaching the broader streets of Threshold is squashed by the horrid smells that linger everywhere. She quickly voices her disdain, "How can humans stand to live in such unclean conditions?"
Finally the Hook and Hatchet is reached, but Nariya has no stomach for food. When the discussion of sharing rooms comes up, she'll figure her and Lilia will be together. She wouldn't mind Sherwood or Kylie's company, but figures Kylie and Rat will want to catch up with each other and Sherwood is about the only one who seems to trust Yusef right now. With that thought in mind, she'll approach Lilia, "Want to share a room then?"
There's nothing that Nariya needs from Threshold and will be more than ready to leave in the morning. She'll partake of a light breakfast, but otherwise be ready to go whenever the others are.

The Hook and Hatchet is yet another human inn and not as welcoming as the halfling one back in Rifflian. Thankfully only one night is to be spent here.
Once morning comes, Lilia will eat a light breakfast and will be most eager to depart this filthy human city.

It will give us a chance to converse more."Nariya wrote:Finally the Hook and Hatchet is reached, but Nariya has no stomach for food.
Once morning comes, Lilia will eat a light breakfast and will be most eager to depart this filthy human city.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!
Sherwood
Sherwood:
"We are going to be exploring the Black Peak Mountains in search of a elf-maiden who may possess vital information."
Upon learning that the inn only has three rooms left, he'll suggest sharing a room with Yusef. That'll allow the elves to be together and Kylie to catch up on old times with Rat.
After breakfast next morning, Sherwood will lead the group out of town to the north. Once beyond the city walls, he'll summon a trio of Phantom Steeds for the group to use as mounts.
"What more indeed," Sherwood will say with a grin. "If life was only that simple."Rat wrote:"That's what I said! It's a plot against us small folk! No doubt they are jealous of the idyllic life we shirelings lead! Aye, a nice fire to warm your feet… A fine meal and some ale to wash it down with. What more could you want from life?"
"This is Yusef, Rat. He's a wandering Priest of Celestian. He's not my bodyguard."Rat wrote:"I can see why you have Cat-Eyes along with you, Sherwood! He your bodyguard or something? That was impressive!"
Sherwood is pleased that Rat is going to be coming along. It will allow him to keep an eye on the halfling thief and, hopefully, keep him out of trouble.Rat wrote:"Well, I don't know, Sherwood…", Rat begins to say. Very well, you can come with me on your journey!"
With that, Rat begins to walk away. After a few steps he pauses and looks back.
"Where we be goin' again, Sherwood?"

I do what is necessary.
Rat
Rat:
Once at the Inn, Rat will secure himself a place near the fire where he can warm his feet. A fine meal, on Sherwood's tab of course!, follows. From the looks of it, Rat will end up sharing a room with Kylie which is fine with him. He'll indulge the lass in conversation before falling asleep.
"Well, naturally lass! What could possibly be better than to be a halfling? We take up less space and don't go 'round rapping our heads on the ceiling! We appreciate and savor the finer things in life."Sherwood & Kylie wrote:"What more indeed," Sherwood will say with a grin. "If life was only that simple."
Sherwood and herself banter back and forth with Rat, her former mentor in the acquisitions trade. Kylie chuckles happily in such company. "I confess, Rat, all we bigger folk really do wish that we were lucky enough to be halflings like yourself."
"Another elf-maiden, Sherwood? Three are not enough for ya?", Rat will say with a grin. "Have no fear, Sherwood, I can assure you that me mountain climbing skills are the finest you'll find in these lands! Indeed, me mum thought that I was part billygoat as a child!"Sherwood wrote:"We are going to be exploring the Black Peak Mountains in search of a elf-maiden who may possess vital information."
"Indeed it will lass!" Rat has always had a soft spot for Kylie and will seem quite affectionate of her.Rat wrote:Sherwood invites Rat to join them, at least for the night, and Kylie is happy to hear him accept. It will be good to catch up with her favorite halfling. "I'm glad we'll have a chance to chat a bit and catch up on each other's lives," Kylie says to Rat with an affectionate smile.
Rat is startled when Cat-Eyes speaks to him and gives him that look. Knowing that he possesses the almighty hands of death, Rat will eagerly agree with the request. "Why of course, friend Yusef! No offense was intended, I assure you! Why, all Priests of Celestian are such fine fellows…"Yusef wrote:Sherwood invites Rat to join them, to which the halfling seems to agree - even if he does try to make it sound like it was his idea.

Travelling Ever Onward
Yusef:
He notes that the young woman called Kylie gives him a strange look after he sends the thugs running. She says nothing however, so he chooses not to remark on it.
The elven women discuss their displeasure with the city, but it means little to Yusef. He has been in many cities, and they are often the same, so it is something he has grown used to.
The Hook and Hatchet looks like many of the inns he has stayed in during his travels. It proves reasonably comfortable and the food is good enough. Yusef makes sure that his horse is properly stabled, then joins the others inside. There is some discussion of rooming accomodations, but he has no objection to the suggested arrangements. "Staying with Sherwood is fine with me. I know that elves often don't sleep as long as we humans anyway."
What Sherwood tells Rat of their mission is no more than he himself was told, so there is nothing to be learned there. Still, Yusef finds that he is curious regarding exactly what they hope to learn from the elf. All in good time, he supposes.
Before retiring, Yusef will perform his daily devotions under the light of the moon and stars, if they are out. Otherwise, it will be somewhere outside not far from the inn, but in such seclusion as is available.
Rising the next morning, Yusef finds that, predictably, the elves are already long up. He engages in prayer for awhile, then proceeds to the common room to break his fast. Seeing that Sherwood has summoned some horses, Yusef goes and saddles his own more mundane mount.

New Beginnings
Kylie
Kylie really fails to see what Lilia and Nariya are complaining about. Once off Fogor Island, the city is far nicer than the area where she grew up. Growing up in the woods must be a very different experience!
Though the name sounds a bit disreputable, even piratey, the Hook and Hatchet isn't a bad place. In fact, Kylie finds it quite comfortable. Of course, practically everywhere they've stayed since leaving Pyris has seemed quite luxurious to her.
Pleased with the arrangements, Kylie spends quite a while catching up with Rat. Kylie talks about her training and all of the things they've done - in somewhat general terms - since leaving Pyris. Not surprisingly, Rat has a number of tales to tell as well, though as always, she suspects that they have been embellished a bit.
Knowing that halflings, like humans, need more sleep than elves, Kylie doesn't keep Rat up too late. Thus, she is able to rise somewhat earlier than the humans. Kylie spends the extra time studying her spellbooks. She will also spends time discussing the principles of magic with Lilia, if her elven friend is willing.
Once they are out of town, Sherwood summons mounts for them. If their aren't enough, Kylie can summon one for herself, as she has ensured that she has the spell available.

Once I get home from the trip, I'll update Kylie and Yusef's spell lists.

Post Continued:
After a pleasant evening of rest at the Hook and Hatchet, the adventurers are ready to depart. Seeing that Yusef is getting his horse ready for the trip, Sherwood will step up to him.
"Where we are going, and how we are getting there, you'll find that your horse is going to be very impractical and at some point you'd have to abandon him. If you wish, you can stable him here on my tab and pick him up later. He's also not going to be able to keep pace with the mounts I'll be summoning."
Assuming that issue is resolved, the group departs Threshold on foot. The city is just starting to come to life and the streets are getting busier. Sherwood speaks to the guards at the towns north gate and the group departs.
Sherwood leads the way across the plains and into the nearby light forest. Once out of sight from the city, he stops and conjures a trio of Phantom Steeds. It takes 10 minutes to summon each mount.
The Phantom Steeds have black heads and bodies, with gray manes and tail. Their hooves are smoke colored and insubstantial. They make no noise. The eyes of the magical mounts are milky white. They seem to come with what appears to be a saddle and a bit and bridle. There is a strong unnatural feeling to the creatures.
Once they are conjured, Sherwood will address the group.
"These are quasi-real horses who do not require food or rest. They can run much faster than a real horse, but will vanish when the spell expires. That won't be for at least ten hours."
"We'll need to ride double and there are weight limitations. Yusef, Kylie, and I will need to ride separately, but I think everyone else is light enough to be okay."
Once ready, the group mounts up and begins their trek. The Phantom Steeds do feel and respond like the real thing, so its not that big of a difference. The major difference comes as the steeds clear the light forest and begin to run. They easily reach the maximum speed for regular horses and then continue to accelerate! The terrain passes at a rapid clip as the magical mounts run nearly twice as fast as the real thing.
Up ahead, Threshold Lake comes into view. Strangely enough, Sherwood continues to ride directly towards the water. He doesn't stop!
The lead Phantom Steed hits the water and continues to gallop along-- on top of the water! The other magical mounts follow the first and the trio is racing across the surface of the lake. The whole experience is disconcerting to those unprepared for it.
In less than ten minutes the horses cross the lake and begin to head north along a narrow valley. Up ahead the Black Peak Mountains dominate the landscape. Sherwood follows a small river through the valley. At times he has the lead mount run across the river. At other times he just follows the river. The valley is a lightly forested hilly region.
Stones of an ancient road can be seen here and there along the way. Judging from their age they must predate the formation of Cynalon.
The valley begins to narrow and the mountains rise up on both sides. These are steep climbs that would be difficult to any but the most experienced climber.
Less that two hours after the beginning of the journey, it comes to an end. The valley closes up and the mountains take over. The thunderous sound of a water fall fills the area making it difficult to hear normal talking. The water falls off a sheer drop that is over three hundred feet high before continuing on through the valley as the small river. Huge clouds of white spray rise and obscure most of the area around the base of the waterfall.
Sherwood will slow his mount down and come to a stop a bit away from the waterfall. Far enough away to be heard clearly.
"According to the records and diaries that I read, my early ancestors came this very same way in the early days of the kingdom. This area used to be controlled by a fierce tribe of gnolls, but they were eventually defeated. They spoke of following an ancient road into this valley and finding a way up this cliff. They were able to ride along a little further before being forced to abandoned their mounts. Let's take a look around and see if we can find a way to continue along."

GM Notes
GM Notes:
As noted above, Sherwood, Yusef, and Kylie have to ride separately due to weight issues. So Nariya, Lilia, and Rat will have to choose their riding partners.
If Kylie suggests summoning her own mount, Sherwood will say not to, using the same reasons he gave Yusef. Nariya can estimate that the group covered nearly thirty miles in two hours.
The valley is primarily hills and light forest. Only normal, mundane creatures were spotted along the way. In spots the ancient road can be seen before being covered up again. It ran along the left side of the river.
Is there a way to continue up into the mountains or will you be forced to climb?

Rat
Rat:
The evening passes way too quickly for the halfling. He spends way too much time down in the common room sipping ale and warming his feet by the fire. He indulges the crowd with tales of his adventures, every word of which he will swear is true.
Later he'll relax in the room he shares with the young finder Kylie, although it doesn't take long for the halfling to fall asleep. The lass is already up and gone by the time Rat wakes up.
Mumbling incoherently to himself, Rat dresses and drags himself down to the common room. A hearty breakfast is devoured and those looking on can't help but wonder where the halfling puts it all. Rat goes back for seconds several times. Once having his fill, the Master Finder grabs his gear and heads out with the others.
"So lets go find us an elf!", Rat cheerfully calls out as the grand expedition begins. Mysteriously we slow down and come to a stop just a short distance from the city!
"Break time already? Well, fine with me! I could use a snack!"
Instead, Sherwood uses his dark arts to conjure a trio of black ghost-like stallions! Rat will cautiously eye the beasts. Horses never were his favorite anyway. Way too big.
"Uhm, pardon me here, Sherwood, but be these things safe? That one over there has got that 'halfling-eating glare' in his eye! I know that look as I've seen it before!"
After being assured that the black beasts are safe, comes the choice of who to ride with. Seems there are weight issues, but Rat doesn't quite understand any of that magical mumbo-jumbo.
Naturally, riding with Kylie would be his best choice, but seeing the looks on the elves faces makes him change his mind. Stepping up to Yusef, Rat will say, "If none of ye mind, I'll be riding with my good friend Yusef here. We can get to know each other better."
After getting settled in on top of the black beast, Rat is ready for a leisurely ride to find this missing elf. Or so he thought!
"SLOW DOWN! Watch out for that tree! No! Not the water!"
Yusef finds that the halfling has veritable death grip on him as he discovers just how special these horses really are! They are insanely fast and can run over water like it was dry land! The trip is mostly a blur to Rat as he spent more time hanging on for dear life.
Finally, the nightmare ride ends and Rat scurries off the evil horse as fast as he can. He hits the ground, tumbles to his feet, and then points an accusing finger at Sherwood.
"Be ye mad? Why didn't you warn us about these demon horses! That had to be the worse thing that ever happened to me! Well, the worse thing to happen to me today!"
Once settled down, Rat will use his considerable finding skills to find a safe way up the mountain.

Lilia
Lilia:
The Elf Maiden is up early and ready to depart. She has to wait while the others get up and have their breakfast.
Finally we depart this horrible place and head out into the countryside. The light forest, while not having seen elven care, is a welcomed relief from the conditions back inside Threshold.
Sherwood conjures a trio of Phantom Steeds for us to ride. Lilia is somewhat familiar with the enchantment as she recently added it to her spell book. The enchanted steeds have a limited weight capacity beyond the main rider, so it is only logical for the heaviest to be paired with the lightest.
That leaves Nariya, the halfling thief, and myself to be paired with Sherwood, Kylie, and the half-demon. Lilia can't help exchange glances with Nariya as she is sure that neither one of them wish to ride with him.
However, the situation is resolved as the halfling decides to ride with Yusef. Lilia will arch her eyebrow in surprise, but makes no comment of it. Her respect for the small thief just went up a notch.
To Nariya, Lilia will say, "If it makes no difference to you, I will ride with Kylie leaving you Sherwood. Is that agreeable?"
The speed of the Phantom Steeds still surprises Lilia even thought she was prepared for it. Their velocity is incredible! The fact that they can travel over water just further demonstrates just how skilled a wizard Sherwood is. Lilia is content to hang on and enjoy the ride and feel the wind blowing through her hair.
During the ride another notion comes to the Elf Maiden. It is refreshing to be in a peaceful land and not have to be concerned with being attacked by monsters and rampaging orcs.
The trip over the water is exciting and unexpected. All too soon the ride comes to an end at a water fall. The only way to go is straight up. Sherwood suggests that there is a way to get up this cliff with the horses.
"Perhaps this ancient road leads the way?", Lilia will suggest. The Elf Maiden will look to see if she can find this road and follow it.

Nariya:
Nariya is also up early as her desire to be free of the human city is her main motivation. She enjoys a light breakfast with those who are up as well. There is little else to do as she had no need to unpack any of her gear the night before.
Once out of the town, Sherwood conjures up some magical steeds. Nariya can't help but be fascinated by the effects, even though the horses seem a little intimidating at first.
The Phantom Steeds have black heads and bodies, with gray manes and tail. Their hooves are smoke colored and insubstantial. They make no noise. The eyes of the magical mounts are milky white. "That is fine," Nariya replies. "I usually don't get the chance to be so close to Sherwood, so I should jump at this opportunity, no?" To that, Nariya will laugh lightly.
The ride is exhilirating, especially when the speeds go beyond anything she has ever experienced before. Part of her is scared, but the rest of her is excited beyond belief! Nariya tenses up when they approach the lake, expecting to be thrown or make a quick turn. Once it is evident they continue across water without hassle, she relaxes and enjoys the unique sensation.

"If it does or doesn't, I can find us at least one suitable trail, even if it's my own," Nariya states matter-of-factly. She pulls out her bow and moves to the lead position to scout out a path, whether it be useable by the magical steeds or only by foot.
To Nariya, Lilia will say, "If it makes no difference to you, I will ride with Kylie leaving you Sherwood. Is that agreeable?"
The trip over the water is exciting and unexpected. All too soon the ride comes to an end at a water fall. The only way to go is straight up. Sherwood suggests that there is a way to get up this cliff with the horses.

Travelling Ever Onward
Yusef:
Once out of the city, Sherwood casts three spells, and three inky black steeds appear as a result. Something about them is clearly unnatural, but Yusef has dealt with the unnatural most of his life. Still, he pauses to look them over carefully, impressed by the fine musculature of these beasts - whatever they are. He listens as Sherwood brings them up to speed, noting that weight is still an issue with the magical mounts. Doubling up is perhaps not the best solution, but Yusef doesn't really mind, nor care which of the others he gets paired with.
The horses set off, and quickly achieve astonishing speeds. Yusef finds it both terrifying and exciting at the same time At first he is quite tense, focussing on just hanging on, but is able to relax as they go on. Despite the tightness of the halfling's death-grip, Yusef hardly notices and is discomforted not at all.
Yusef gets his first real surprise when they reach the lake. Approaching the water on what looks to be a terminal vector, Yusef takes the reins and turns the steed to the side a bit while also slowing some. However, he soon notices Sherwood - who is in the lead - continue on out across the water! Such a sight is truly astounding, but Yusef has enough presense of mind to release the reins and allow his mount to continue on with the others.
Eventually, the group comes to what appears to be a dead end; the valley ends at a cliff graced with a waterfall. Based on what Sherwood says, others have found a way to reach the top, so Yusef determines to help find it. First, he asks Celestian to guide his perceptions via a spell known as Call Upon Faith. He then moves to the cliff edge and begins searching for any kind of hidden passage.
Yusef listens quietly to Sherwood's advice, then pauses to consider for a moment. "What is the likelihood that we will be coming back this way, Sherwood? Perhaps it would make more sense to just sell the horse - and it's equipment - and buy another later if it is needed." Based on Sherwood's reply, Yusef will either stable or sell, depending on which seems to make the most sense. The saddle, saddle blanket, bit and bridle will either be sold or stabled with the horse. He'll carry the saddle bags with the rest of his gear over his shoulder.Sherwood wrote:"Where we are going, and how we are getting there, you'll find that your horse is going to be very impractical and at some point you'd have to abandon him. If you wish, you can stable him here on my tab and pick him up later. He's also not going to be able to keep pace with the mounts I'll be summoning."

After vaulting nimbly into the saddle, Yusef reaches a hand down to the halfling. "It would be my pleasure, Rat. And don't worry, I'll protect you from this hell-steed's teeth," he concludes with a chuckle.Rat wrote:"Uhm, pardon me here, Sherwood, but be these things safe? That one over there has got that 'halfling-eating glare' in his eye! I know that look as I've seen it before!"
Naturally, riding with Kylie would be his best choice, but seeing the looks on the elves faces makes him change his mind. Stepping up to Yusef, Rat will say, "If none of ye mind, I'll be riding with my good friend Yusef here. We can get to know each other better."

New Beginnings
Kylie:
Based on Sherwood's advice, Kylie doesn't bother to memorize the Phantom Steed spell. Sherwood's are bound to be better and faster, and will certainly last longer. She just assumes that he will summon enough for everyone. Yusef has to make provisions for his own horse, but that's the demon-man's problem.
Come morning and they exit Threshold, Sherwood summons his Phantom Steeds - but only three! It is interesting to watch as the more experienced mage performs his summoning, but Kylie is surprised when he stops so soon. She doesn't really like the idea of doubling up, especially with Yusef, but Sherwood resolves that issue quickly enough.
Having some familiarity with the spell, Kylie knew these Steeds would be fast, but wasn't really prepared for how fast! It takes Kylie some moments to get her breath back and adjust to the speed as they seem almost to fly along. Once she does adjust Kylie is relaxed and chats with Lilia as they go. Though not surprised by the Steeds' ability to run on the water, still it is a unique experience and Kylie revels in it.
When they arrive at the end of the valley, Kylie is a bit disappointed that the ride is already over. Rat's hysterics cause her to chuckle, but she goes over to make sure he is alright. "Are you okay, friend Rat? Quite a ride, wasn't it? Took my breath away."
"I once heard a story where there was a cave behind a waterfall. Perhaps there is something like that here. I'll go over and take a look.
"By the way, are there any humanoid races that have gills like a fish, like maybe those sea elves you mentioned or some kind of mer-people? If so, can you describe them to me? I could use their form to check in the water under the waterfall as well."
After Sherwood gives her a response, Kylie heads toward the waterfall, getting as close to it as possible without getting wet. Then, she'll try to look behind the waterfall, wading in the water as necessary. Then, she cast Alter Self to take on the form of whatever gilled race Sherwood described, and continue the search that way.

A thought strikes the young woman and she moves over to Sherwood.Sherwood wrote:"According to the records and diaries that I read, my early ancestors came this very same way in the early days of the kingdom. Sherwood
Sherwood:
Sherwood leads the way out of town after answering the guards questions at the city gate. Once a safe distance away and out of sight from prying eyes, he casts his Phantom Steed spells.
Sherwood sees that Nariya will be riding with him and will help her up onto the mounts back. "Hang on tight," he'll tell the Elf Maiden. "This is going to be fun."
Having used this spell numerous times before, Sherwood is fully aware of the abilities of these steeds. They are nearly twice as fast as real horses and can cover large chunks of ground quickly. They can also run across any surface, even water as everyone discovers as we take a shortcut across the lake instead of circling around.
The ride continues up the valley and to the base of the Black Peak Mountains. There the way to continue seems to be blocked.
While the others search, Sherwood will rummage through his Bag of Holding and pull out the book containing the notes of his ancestor concerning this particular expedition. It's peculiar that the notes were very meticulous leading up and into the mountains, but become very vague once farther along. Is there really nothing up here or perhaps there was something that they didn't want anyone to know about?
"I really don't know if our path will bring us back to Threshold or not. However, I can bring you back here if need be with my magic. If you have a strong attachment to your horse, than store him. If not, then sell him and that'll solve the problem."Yusef listens quietly to Sherwood's advice, then pauses to consider for a moment. Rat's antics will bring a smile to Sherwood's face. Things are not dull with the Master Finder around. "As I stated previously, they do not eat, so you're not on the menu. They also do not attack, so you'll be perfectly safe as long as you have a tight grip.Rat wrote:"Uhm, pardon me here, Sherwood, but be these things safe? That one over there has got that 'halfling-eating glare' in his eye! I know that look as I've seen it before!"

"I did tell you to hang on tight", Sherwood answers with a grin. "And the day is still young."Rat wrote:"Be ye mad? Why didn't you warn us about these demon horses! That had to be the worse thing that ever happened to me! Well, the worse thing to happen to me today!"
Sherwood listens to Kylie's suggestion as the others fan out to search. "Actually, there is no need to go into a full sea elf form. Just use the magic to give yourself gills and you should be able to breath underwater just fine. Although that may not be necessary. Make sure that there is not a way around the waterfall on the surface before going underwater. No reason to waste the spell if you don't need to."Kylie wrote:"I once heard a story where there was a cave behind a waterfall. Perhaps there is something like that here. I do what is necessary.
