The Guardians of Light begin their plan to re-take the Vesubian Gate. A trio of flyers hovers over the gate. Argent is supported by her magic while Lord Acerion and Chareos are carried by the Pegasus.
From this vantage point, over two hundred feet overhead, the trio can see most of Corunglain below them. They can see six more Gatehouses just like the Vesubian Gatehouse in the different parts of the city. Heavy combat seems to be going on around several of the Gatehouses; mainly the Southern and Northern Streel Gatehouses and the Green Valley Gatehouse. The others, the Port Gatehouse, the East and West Gatehouse are quiet. The last gatehouse, the Duke's Gatehouse which does not resemble the others is also under attack.
Ominously, flaming catapult fire illuminates the night sky as small meteor-like objects bombard the Star-Shaped fortress of the Duke of Corunglain. Some blocks of the city are engulfed in flames, while others remain untouched. Goblinoids and other foul creatures run wild in the streets unchecked.
Out beyond the Vesubian Bridge, Lords Validar and Corley are ready to lead the charge into the Gatehouse assisted by Lyonessa. Behind them, an archer unit consisting of Sherra, Laucian, and Arocken are ready to move forward to give them support.
Much further back, the rag-tag group of refugees are preparing to advance back over the bridge and into the Gatehouse once it is safe. Behind them, back out on the plains, Ivy and Grondar help an expectant mother.
Argent casts Wall of Fog from Sherra's scroll and the battle begins! A roughly rectangular bank of fog springs into existence blocking sight of the top of the Gatehouse.
Seeing the Wall of Fog, Validar and Corley ride hard over the bridge toward the Gatehouse with Lyonessa bringing up the rear.
Behind them, the archers move into closer range. Sherra uses the blending ability of her armor and is already halfway across the bridge. The Wall of Fog works both ways and they are unable to make out targets on top of the Gatehouse. However, the adjoining towers are not covered and their silhouettes can be seen.
Chareos unleashes a double forked Lightning bolt from his wand that briefly illuminates the top of the right hand tower. The magic takes down half a dozen orcs and goblins in the process.
The archers lock onto targets on that tower top and fire. A volley of shafts are fired and several of the silhouettes go down, but exact details cannot be made out at this range. They can make out Acerion bringing his Pegasus in for a landing.
Overhead, Acerion directs the Pegasus to land on the roof of the right hand tower. Chareos' removed many of the enemy targets and others are taken down by arrows. Only two goblins remain on the tower top. They stare in awe and are frozen in place as the Pegasus flies towards them.
Down on the ground Lords Validar and Corley ride through the tunnels in the Gatehouse at full speed. Lord Corley lowers his lance as he spies a troll in the road dead ahead. Destrier fearlessly rides towards the creature and Corley skewers it on his lance. The lanky troll is impaled through the chest and hangs limply from the lance. The momentum of the charge carries Lord Corley past the stationary wall of pikes and deeper into the compound.
Nearby, Lord Validar slows his charge and slashes at a troll menacing a frightened refugee. Twice Lord Validar's sword bites deep into the troll. Lord Validar's momentum, coupled with the troll's surprise at being attacked, forces the creature to stumble forward. A half-wall embedded with spears and pikes awaits the troll as it impales itself in nearly a dozen places. The troll twitches unnaturally as it hangs on the spears.
The refugee, a teenage boy, looks up in shock as the troll that was getting ready to make a meal out of him is suddenly and violently dispatched. The other two trolls spin and begin to rush towards Validar. Lyonessa sees this as she rides up.
The attack on the trolls can't help but be noticed by those on the top of the Gatehouse and the adjoining towers. They cry out in their own languages, most likely things that are not all that complementary.
Much further away, Bella gives birth with one final push and her son is born!

GM Notes
GM Notes:
Here's a round by round breakdown of what is happening and where each character is at:
Round #1: Argent casts Wall of Fog
Round #2: Riders cross over the bridge and engage trolls and archers fire their first volley. Chareos uses his Wand of Lightning on the enemy forces on the top of the right hand tower. Acerion brings the Pegasus in to land. Lyonessa and Argent can still act in this round.
Round #3: Combat continues. Corley, Validar, Chareos, Acerion, Sherra, Laucian, and Arocken's next actions take place in this round. Lyonessa and Argent can cover their actions for the next two rounds to bring them up to speed with the others. With everything happening on the courtyard side of the Gatehouse, the archers can't see any targets on the rooftops as they are on the other side. They can see some of what is happening in the courtyard through the access passages in the Gatehouse, but it is just a small firing window. Bella's baby is born.
There is a combat map for the Gate battle in the usual location. The map's view is multi-leveled, but uncolored like the main Gate Map. The Gatehouse roof is 15' above the ground and the Tower Roofs are 25' above the ground. With the exception of the doors between the gatehouse and the tower, all the doors shown are on the ground level. The doors between the gatehouse and the towers are on the gatehouse roof level and enter into the 2nd floor of the tower. There is an open hatch in the tower leading down inside to the 2nd floor.
Current Hit Points:
Acerion - 44 of 46
Grondar - 47 of 52
Havoc - 22 of 24

Lyonessa:
The words seem hesitant to the elf and the look of uncertainty that is etched on her features soon confirms his suspicions. He will approach Lyonessa, "I know what is asked of you is a great burden, one which you may or may not be used to. But you will not face it alone.” Adding an easy smile, “I will do my best to protect you and the others with my bow while you accomplish your task.”
"Thank you Laucian," Lyonessa will say with a gentle smile as she rests her hand gingerly on his arm. He can see that she still seems worried, but a little more at ease at his attempts of comforting.
Corley will nod his rough understanding of the fight to come. Seeing the uncertainty on Lady Lyonessa's face, Corley will say a few words to the Songstress.
"Fear not, Lady Lyonessa. Stay behind Lord Validar and myself and we'll deal with the foul creatures! I will not allow them to harm you."
"And I will appreciate your valor this day, Lord Corley," the songstress replies, "but do not put yourself into a reckless position over me. We have good folk to save. Do not worry, I will do my part."
Seeing the Wall of Fog, Validar and Corley ride hard over the bridge toward the Gatehouse with Lyonessa bringing up the rear.
Despite her trepedations, Lyonessa spurs her horse on, but it can not hope to catch the thundering warhorses of Lords Validar and Corley. They have struck mighty blows against the trolls before she can even reach the scene, but she knows that trolls will fight on well past when they should have died.
The refugee, a teenage boy, looks up in shock as the troll that was getting ready to make a meal out of him is suddenly and violently dispatched. The other two trolls spin and begin to rush towards Validar. Lyonessa sees this as she rides up.
As she gets closer, Lyonessa will take the Potion of Fire Breathing and noting the two trolls spinning to face Validar, she will spew forth the potion hoping to get both of the trolls in its firey wake.

Validar's Henchmen
Arocken -
Arocken fires at the targets of opportunity on the tower as the Lightning Bolt illuminates the sillouettes amongst the Fog. He is not certain if his shafts connected but as a group several of the enemy are downed.
Without a moment of hesitation, Arocken will continue across the bridge and fire arrows at the trolls moving on Validar.
(If they are both down, then move through the gatehouse, and into the courtyard. Use the pike walls as some cover and begin to fire at the tower next to the one that Chareos and Acerion landed upon.)
Po -
Never having been involved in a birthing before, Po stands by nervously and awaits Ivy's commands.

Conquer or Die!
Corley
Corley:
Turning Destrier around, Corley rides back to assist Lord Validar and the fair Lyonessa in their struggles against the remaining trolls. Once close, Corley will dismount and engage the remaining creatures in combat with his greatsword.
"And save them we shall, milady! Both Lord Validar and myself have enchanted rings that heal our wounds at a rapid pace, although mine is based upon wounding others first. In short, neither one of us has any great fear of being hurt while in battle as the wounds will be healed quickly. So there is no need to put yourself in harm's way if it is not required. I do not question your valor or your courage, milady. I only wished to spare you unnecessary injury."Lyonessa wrote:"And I will appreciate your valor this day, Lord Corley," the Songstress replies, "but do not put yourself into a reckless position over me. We have good folk to save. Do not worry, I will do my part."
Having lanced one of the unnatural trolls, Destrier's speed carries us deeper into the courtyard, past the thankfully open portions in the speared defensive wall. Knowing that the trolls death-like state is only temporary, Lord Corley looks about for a more permanent solution. Spotting fires still burning in the courtyard, he'll ride towards one and drop the troll-- still on the lance-- into one. Let the flames finish off this foul creature!Down on the ground Lords Validar and Corley ride through the tunnels in the Gatehouse at full speed. Argent
Argent:
Forcing herself to look away, Argent casts the Wall of Fog and the assault begins. Nearby Chareos uses his wand to clear away part of the one tower. A moment later, the armored Lords ride into the courtyard to engage the trolls.
Argent spends a few moments examining the situation and where best to make use of her magic. The roof of the Gatehouse seems to be teeming with orcs and goblins, so that makes the best target. Argent will cast Fireball in an effort to take out the enemy there. She'll have the Fireball explode above the rooftop, so that its area of effect will not reach ground level. And she'll also make sure that it does not reach Acerion or Chareos.
The Invoker pauses to take in the sight of Corunglain beneath her. It is one that causes her to realize the enormity of the situation that lies ahead of them! This is all far beyond anything that she's ever encountered before and fear can’t help but grip her. From this vantage point, over two hundred feet overhead, the trio can see most of Corunglain below them.

Laucian
As they ride closer to gates Laucian can only make out mere shadows so he lets loose a volley of arrows towards them. Not knowing the outcome he presses forward. He quickly judges that their volley of arrows, as well as a stroke of lightning was effective, 'cause there is no return fire.
Moving forward through the haze of the fog the forms of the trolls soon come into sight. Noting Lord Corley out of position from Validar and Lyonessa he will knock an arrow to his bow. Aiming at the rightmost Troll he will let loose.

Shaking his head slightly in disagreement he will merely say," Do not confuse one's feelings with one's duty. I am sworn to protect the woodlands and those who call it home. They threaten all that I am devoted to perserve and protect. Any who threaten these ways will rue the day they did so."Grondar wrote "I hear the pain and anger in your words, Laucian. You have undoubtly suffered greatly at their hands at some point in your life. However, I do not believe that the Guardians of the Light - as we have chosen to call ourselves - should allow our decisions to be determined by personal vendettas. By taking such a name, we claim to stand for something better, and I believe that we should strive to do so."
Laucian wrote:
“I recall hearing your voice over the battle speaking that they would never terrorize these people again. And you were right. They will never terrorize another living creature again whether it be human, elf, dwarf or any woodland creature.
"Yes, I was and am entirely committed to stopping them. However, I remain opposed to the vengeful slaughter of a cowed and surrendering opponent."

Chareos
So much damage and loss of life. Chareos looks down and he promises himself that he will see this to the very end.
Raising his wand he aims at this appointed tower and fires. The sky is lit up brightly as screams of humaniods are heard from its path. The flight path and landing path clear they begin to land on the roof. Quickly dismounting he looks about himself seeing two Goblins looking awestruck.
He will look to the next tower that lies above the stables. If he sees humanoids there he will let loose another forked Lightning bolt from his wand at the tower.
Glancing to the earth below he catches the flickering fires as they sail through the air bombarding the fortress. As well as Humaniods moving about the streets unchecked and unchallenged. From this vantage point, over two hundred feet overhead, the trio can see most of Corunglain below them. Acerion
Acerion:
Overhead, Acerion directs the Pegasus to land on the roof of the right hand tower. Chareos' removed many of the enemy targets and others are taken down by arrows. Only two goblins remain on the tower top. They stare in awe and are frozen in place as the Pegasus flies towards them.
There is no doubt in anyone's mind that the attack has commenced. Acerion wheels his pegasus into a fine position where Chareos is able to devastate those who swarmed upon the right tower with his wand. A few arrows strike home as well, leaving only two pitiful goblins left to gawk at their looming fate.
Acerion plays on their growing fear and leaps from his pegasus at the earliest convienence, making sure Chareos will not be dropped roughly upon the roof by his sudden departure. He brings forth his holy axe and charges at the remaining goblins with a bellowing cry, "For Corunglain!"

hey.. it worked!
Sherra:
Sherra is relieved to see the spell goes off without a hitch and that it was worth the risk in acquiring it all that time ago. As that was essentially the signal to start, she activates her magical armor and begins to move into position. As the magical lightning casts an eerie light upon the battlements, especially through and around the fog, Sherra lets herself only be distracted for a mere moment before finding and locking in her first target.
Argent casts Wall of Fog from Sherra's scroll and the battle begins! A roughly rectangular bank of fog springs into existence blocking sight of the top of the Gatehouse.

Once the target options become sparse on that tower and she sees the pegasus beginning to land, Sherra advances up and keeps her eyes scanning the walls and towers. It seems there are a number of foes in the courtyard ahead, and Laucian begins to add his fire in assistance to the riders already inside. Sherra however is more concerned about archers springing up from hiding places and raining death down upon them. She will move up fairly quickly, keeping her eyes above. If no targets present themselves, she will find a spot and use her Boots of Levitation to gain higher ground and fire at available targets in the courtyard or beyond. The archers lock onto targets on that tower top and fire. A volley of shafts are fired and several of the silhouettes go down, but exact details cannot be made out at this range. They can make out Acerion bringing his Pegasus in for a landing.
The Attack begins...
Lord Validar -
Grondar -"And just because you make the decision, does not make it right. When it comes to questions of morality and ethics, as a priest I believe that I have more training in such areas than you. After all, that is our function as priests: to guide and teach others in the proper way to live and act. There are always options if one is willing to see them."
"Then for now, we likely are to, at best, agree to disagree. I may not have your level of morals and ethics. I am simply acting in the best interests of my people. That must be my first concern."
"Exactly," Grondar replies to Ivy before turning back to Validar. "If I am not mistaken, and I don't believe that I am, we raid into the lands that they think of as theirs as well, slaying their women, children and elderly in the process. Does that then make us evil as well? Many attrocities are commited on both sides under the banner of 'This is war'."
"I do not know where you get the idea that we have slaughtered them. I fought for two campaigns in the Keln Frontier, battling humanoid raiders and encampments, and only saw military targets. No one I have been associated with have slaughtered defenseless humanoids nor have any of my commands."
"Going back to what you said earlier, they don't see their actions as crimes. They are operating under the orders of their leaders. As Validar keeps saying, 'this is war', and they are following orders. They are invading our lands just as we invade theirs and various nations of our people have invaded each other all down through history. War is a function of agression, for war cannot happen if one nation or people do not seek to take the lands of another, and history is rife with war. Is it not the habit in war to take prisoners in war? It certainly is among most nations that I am aware of."
"Which do you accuse them of being, civilized and 'only following theor orders or as savages, because they cannot be both. I can assure you that while the humanoids are not savages, they are savage and bloodthirsty as well. I have seen enough in the battles I have been in before to be assured of this. We are not dealing with human or demi-human foes and I will not treat them the same."
"As for prisoners of war, they are taken when the battle is done, not during it and cetainly not while trying to make a counter-strike. As for that matter, they were not cowed and surrendering, they were routing or simply blinded. A routed foe may run off the field of battle and they may rally to recover and continue the fight. I am not willing to take the chance that one of our people may be killed by those humanoids in the future and therefore, we are obligated as stewards and protectors of the realm to first address the needs of our people."
"If when we win this battle, as we most assuredly will, and there are surrendering humanoids, then we can discuss what to do with prisoners of war. Until then, they are combatants, regardless of their state of morale, and must be treated as such. To do otherwise only courts disaster and more potential deaths."
"Obviously, this is not the time for a full-fledged debate. My goal is to win this battle and we must destroy the evil attacking Corunglain. We will do so with every means at our disposal. Your advice is noted and I would like to hear your final proposal for dealing with those humanoids that didn't run and how you would have stopped the ones who were fleeing. When this battle is over, we should have much time to contemplate such questions."
Lyonessa - "And I will appreciate your valor this day, Lord Corley," the songstress replies, "but do not put yourself into a reckless position over me. We have good folk to save. Do not worry, I will do my part."
Lord Validar listens to the Bard's conversation with Lord Corley and nods silently in her direction before riding off. The bravery she showed in the face of the Ice Lizards was true indeed. It was not his original intention to have non-fighters in the direct attack, but Lyonessa's courage proves the decision to be a good one.
As the attack begins with Argent casting the Fog spell, Validar charges Havok across the bridge and into the courtyard of the Gatehouse. Riding through one of the portals, Validar sees a troll about to attack a young lad and slashes the troll, impaling it on the pike wall. "Find yourself some cover, but stay here, there are more coming," Validar will say to the boy.
Dismounting, Validar moves against the trolls approaching him, targeting the one furthest from the gatehouse, as this allows a firing line at the other one for Lyonessa and the archers behind him. Validar will attack one troll with the intent of downing it before moving on.

Ivy
Ivy:
It is clear in Ivy's face that this discussion is making her more and more angry. She can't help look at the dwarf in a different light. A light that she doesn't like.
Having had more than her stomach can bear of this 'conversation', Ivy will go forth to help the refugees.
Finally, the baby emerges and Ivy will wrap the infant up in a blanket and cut the umbilical cord.
"Congratulations, Bella. You have a son!"
Taking up the babe in her arms, Ivy will wait until Grondar and Po are ready to make the trip back to the others with Bella.
"We can't linger here. We best regroup with the others and get these two out of this cold."
Ivy shakes her head in near disbelief. "What are you talking about?? We raid their lands and cities like they raid ours? Have you taken leave of your senses? Were you struck in the head during the battle? These creatures live in the most desolate and god-forsaken places in the world. Why would we want to attack their homes? They attack us. They have always attacked us and they will always attack us as that seems to be their place in the world. Seemingly their sole reason for existing is to obliterate every human, dwarf, and elf in the world. They cannot be reasoned with. Violence is the only language that they understand. History brings this lesson home over and over again. What you speak of is sheer fantasy.""Exactly," Grondar replies to Ivy before turning back to Validar. "If I am not mistaken, and I don't believe that I am, we raid into the lands that they think of as theirs as well, slaying their women, children and elderly in the process. Does that then make us evil as well? Many atrocities are committed on both sides under the banner of 'This is war'."
"It is the function of a priest to spread the word and ethos of the one they have given their soul over to. For Laucian here it is to spread the word of the Lady of the Forests and to defend such places against those who would do evil there. For Lyonessa it is to spread the word of the Lady of Mysteries, Mystra. For Acerion it is to speak for Heironeous, the God of Honor, Justice, and Valor. For myself it is Azrella, the Blue Lady. It is my duty to protect the innocent and help the abandoned. It is my duty to destroy any undead that I find for they are bane to life. It is my duty to protect all enlightened beings and to not kill any such worthy creatures. In my opinion, none of that would serve to shield the perpetrators of the evil that has been done to the City of Corunglain."Grondar wrote:"It was not my thought or intention to change or 'convert' any of them. My intention is to show and teach our own people that there is a better way than to match savagery with savagery. Is that not our function as priests? I know that I did not join the priesthood just so that I could use my deities' spells to assist in slaughter. I understand and support Azrella's crusade against the unnatural undead, but I don't believe that we can treat living mortal beings in the same manner."
"As I see it, they are getting the same mercy they showed their victims. None. What goes around, comes around."Grondar wrote:"Yes, they have the power and authority. But they also have a moral obligation to temper their judgments with mercy, and providing counsel in these matters is part of our job.
It is clear in Ivy's face that this discussion is making her more and more angry. She can't help look at the dwarf in a different light. A light that she doesn't like.
"Who was also still attacking, in case you didn't notice. Chareos was directly attacked during the last moments of the conflict. They were not all in retreat."Grondar wrote:"Yes, I was and am entirely committed to stopping them. However, I remain opposed to the vengeful slaughter of a cowed and surrendering opponent."
Having had more than her stomach can bear of this 'conversation', Ivy will go forth to help the refugees.
"The baby is almost out!" Ivy will tell Bella. "I know that you are tired and weary, but just one more push!"Much further away, Bella gives birth with one final push and her son is born!

The battle to re-take the Vesubian Gate continues!
Lyonessa rides into the courtyard following Lords Validar and Corley. The Songstress spies a pair of trolls moving closer to Validar. She drinks the last of Chareos' Potion of Fiery Breath and spews forth a stream of fire! Both trolls are covered and damaged from the discharge, but both continue to advance.
Hovering overhead, Argent sends a Fireball to the Gatehouse Roof. The spell blossoms into a huge fiery ball, sending heat and flames in every direction. The flames cover most of the roof, and some do pour down over the sides. Tongues of flames shoot down through the murder holes into the tunnels under the gates, but do not reach the ground. The spell illuminates the night and can't help but be noticed by anyone in the area.
The bodies of those orcs and goblins caught in the area of effect are nearly incinerated by the magic. A few are sent flying outwards and a couple of flaming bodies hit the courtyard ground. The flaming remains land with a sickening thud and do not move. The spell consumed nearly twenty of the enemy.
On the roof of the right-hand gate tower, Lord Acerion brings his Pegasus in to land. He spies a pair of goblins caught flat footed. Once close enough, Acerion leaps from the Pegasus and lands on the roof with a loud clang. He raises his battle axe, utters a war cry, and charges the two goblins!
Not being the bravest of creatures, the two goblins turn, nearly stumbling into each other in the process, and retreat down the open hatch leading down into the tower. Acerion can see that there are steps leading down to the second floor.
Chareos dismounts and the Pegasus flies off once more. The warrior mage looks around for enemies. Down on the Gatehouse Roof he can see nearly two dozen smoldering humanoid bodies. No one down there seems to have survived the Fireball.
The right-hand stable tower seems to be vacant at the moment. However, Chareos does spot movement on the top of the left-hand gatehouse tower. There are several orcs and goblins on that tower top. Perhaps half a dozen in total.
Back down in the courtyard, the fighting continues. Validar dismounts and prepares to engage the two trolls. His longsword bites deep twice into the first troll and it drops. The second troll is delayed as it steps around the flaming body of an orc laying on the ground. The second troll lunges at Validar, but his armor saves him from the beast's claws and teeth.
Arrows whistle through the air towards the troll from outside the Gatehouse. Farther back, Arocken and Laucian close and fire a single shot each. Laucian strikes the troll in its side, while Arocken's shot goes wide. It goes so wide of the target that he accidentally hits Validar! The shot grazes the nobleman's left shoulder, but does no serious damage.
Behind the elves, Sherra advances keeping an eye out for enemy archer fire. She finds none and once reaching the gatehouse walls, commands her enchanted boots to rise her up into the air. Sherra rises up to the level of the Gatehouse Roof and can see the carnage of Argent's Fireball. She'll note movement on the rooftop of the left-hand Gatehouse Tower.
Further back in the courtyard, Lord Corley drops his lance and the troll on it into a small fire that remains from one of the catapults. The young lord then rides Destrier back towards where he left Validar and Lyonessa.
Much further out on the plains, Bella has given birth. Ivy carries the newborn in a blanket while Grondar and Po carry the mother on a litter. Up ahead they can make out the rear of the procession of refugees.

GM Notes
GM Notes:
With the exception of Lyonessa and Argent, everyone has completed their 3rd round actions. Those two can still act in that round.
The majority of the archers turn was taken up by advancing, causing them to only be able to attack once. The rest of Sherra's turn was taken up by her levitating up the wall.
The combat map has been updated.
Current Hit Points:
Acerion - 44 of 46
Grondar - 47 of 52
Havoc - 22 of 24
Validar - 73 of 76
Now what?

Grondar:
Both Validar and Ivy voice their complaints with Grondar's views. "Perhaps the histories that I have read were wrong. I do know that we dwarves have attacked the goblinoid races because we thought it might stop them attacking us, or as revenge for them attacking us. And it goes ever on and on, back and forth.
"But I agree that this is not the time for a grand debate. I hoped to prevent something that I didn't agree with, but failed. There is yet much to do."
The baby is born almost before they are ready. Grondar does his best to assist with the birth in any way he can. Ultimately, it is the mother who does the real work. Once the baby is born, Grondar gives a quick prayer of blessing for the child.
"Congratulations, ma'am. He looks to be a fine, strong son."
Hearing Ivy give the order to move out, Grondar gets Po to help him get Bella onto the stretcher that had been built earlier. "Let's move out, Po," Grondar says. He lifts his end of the stretcher with ease and starts off at whatever pace Po can manage.
It is not long before the spy the other refugees ahead of them. Gladness for their continued safety brings a smile to Grondar's face.

Corley
Corley:
After disposing of the troll, Lord Corley rides back to join Lord Validar and Lady Lyonessa. From the top of Destrier, Corley can see that only one troll remains and Validar is already engaging it. The rooftops seem to be quieter now after Lady Argent cleared the gatehouse with her impressive display of magic.
Riding back through the defensive wall, Corley spots a girl off to his left. The sight of the other dead and partially devoured bodies sickens Corley as does the smell.
Riding closer, Corley offers his hand to the girl. "Come! We'll get you to safety!"
Assuming that the girl follows his instructions, Corley will pick the girl up and set her upon Destrier with him.
Turning, Corley will ride back towards Lord Validar. He'll assist his friend if he needs it, otherwise he'll ride towards the entry to the left hand tower. He'll drop the girl off with the other survivor beforehand. From there, Corley will enter the tower and proceed to secure it, engaging any enemy that crosses his path.

Argent
Argent:
Continuing to hover high over head, Argent can't help but watch her spell as it lights up the night and eliminates most of the enemy forces gathered there. Very good!
And then a thought comes to the Invoker. The fireball was probably noticed by those in this part of the city. Anyone looking in this general direction might have noticed it! Argent may have just inadvertently drawn more enemies to the gatehouse!
Looking back towards the city, Argent spies the smaller gateways into the main city. They are open right now but if closed no reinforcements could come to help defend the gatehouse.
Argent fly off in that direction. If the area where the gates are lowered and raised is clear, she'll land and attempt to drop the gates, sealing the Gatehouse off from the rest of the city. If they are more humanoids there, she'll clear the area with a Magic Missile. If there are a great number of humanoids there, she'll cast her Ice Storm.

Ivy
Ivy:
Relieved that Bella has had her baby, Ivy moves through the night as quickly as she can, but will keep pace with Grondar and Po as they bear the new mother's litter. At last the rear of the refuges comes into sight.
"We've almost caught up to the others," Ivy will state. "Let's leave these two at the front of the procession and then go to assist the others in clearing a safe place for these people."
Once near the front, Ivy will inform Orin of what has transpired. "We're going to go help clear the way. Can you take care of these two for the moment?"
Assuming Orin says yes, Ivy will take up her mace and rush to join her comrades in the battle for the gatehouse.

She drinks the last of Chareo's Potion of Fiery Breath and spews forth a stream of fire! Both trolls are covered and damaged from the discharge, but both continue to advance.
The sensation of breathing fire is not something Lyonessa has ever experienced before. Partly-exhilirating and partly-fearful in doing so, she is relieved to see she was on target and did not catch Validar in the path of flame.
Back down in the courtyard, the fighting continues. Validar dismounts and prepares to engage the two trolls. His longsword bites deep twice into the first troll and it drops. It looks like Validar has the situation well in hand until arrows sail past her and one strikes the noble! Lyonessa spins and readies her mace, but only sees Arocken and Laucian there. She's not sure whose arrow struck him, but is fairly certain it was accidental.
Turning, Corley will ride back towards Lord Validar. He'll assist his friend if he needs it, otherwise he'll ride towards the entry to the left hand tower. He'll drop the girl off with the other survivor before hand. From there, Corley will enter the tower and proceed to secure it, engaging any enemy that crosses his path.
"To me!" she will call out to the survivors. With the arrival of the archers, Lyonessa will take a defensive stance for the moment and protect the survivors. Should any enemy bear down upon them, she will put herself in between them and the survivors and use her mace appropriately.

Validar's henchmen
Arocken -
Arocken winces briefly as he grazes his friend in his haste to fire at the troll. Seeing that Validar has the troll in hand, he will move up an set fire to the downed trolls wth whatever debris is at hand and the flaming corpses of the humanoids that Argent blasted. "Well struck!" he will shout as he lights a large piece of wood on a smouldering orc.
Po-
Po will quietly do as he's told regarding the pregnant woman. He will carry her to the gatehouse and set her down where Ivy directs. He then unhitches his shield from his back and draws his short sword and heads with the others to assist in taking the Gatehouse.

Lord Validar -
Apparently Ivy is just as incredulous at Grondar's comments as the rest of them, perhaps more so. Validar listens as Ivy adds comments to the dwarves odd postulating.
Validar is about to add something further, but thinks better of it and lets the matter end, as Grondar capitulates due to more pressing concerns.

Gatehouse battle continued...
Lyonessa comes forward and bravely breathes fire on the trolls. The surprise it causes allows Validar to close with the closest one and strike it down before it could attack.
A blast of fire lights up the sky and Validar scarcely pays it much heed as flaming humanoid corpses start to drop around him with dull thumps in the courtyard. He moves on the remaining troll, concentrating on giving his comrades the opportunity to move into the courtyard. "I can take this troll myself! Continue to take the towers!"
The troll is unable to get past his defenses and he is unfazed by the arrow grazing his shoulder. The damage is inconsequential.
As Lord Colrey rides up, Validar waves him off. "I have this one. Take the towers, my friend!" Validar watches the young noble ride off the short distance, dismount and head for the tower.
Validar will continue to engage the troll while trying to direct the attack. "We need to close the gates to the inner city!", the young lord will shout. "Secure this area so that we can defend it!"

Conquer or Die!
Acerion
Acerion:
"Chareos, the enemy means to escape!" Acerion calls over his shoulder as he vaults down the stairs after the fleeing goblins. Just like lesser humanoids to turn and flee when facing a foe that has a chance to beat them. Killing the weak and helpless is all they could ever manage to do on their own.
Acerion will chase after the goblins until he can close the distance to within axe-reach, and then he will see about ending their miserable lives.

new vantage point..
Sherra:
Sherra will step onto, and carefully pick her way across, the gatehouse roof, avoiding any open flames or smoldering bodies. Scanning the left gatehouse tower, she will ready her bow once more and begin to fire at targets as they present themselves.Behind the elves, Sherra advances keeping an eye out for enemy archer fire.

Laucian
Emerging from the shroud of the fog, Laucian spots a troll advancing on Validar. Quickly nocking an arrow he let loose and strikes the beast in the side. He soon hears Validar call off Corley to move ahead.
He hesitates for a moment as he hears Lyonessa call for the survivors to stand nearby for protection. Readying his bow he moves to follow Lord Corley into the tower firing his bow at possible targets that present themselves.

"Do not fear they will not wander far!" As he gives chase after Acerion, he will cast a magic missile into any enemy ranks that may lay before them (spread the missiles out).

The Guardians swarm into the Vesubian Gatehouse in their efforts to retake the fortification. Lord Corley rides back to where the conflict with the trolls is taking place. He picks up one of the two survivors of the attacking trolls, this time a young girl. She hesitates but then takes the young noble's hand. She is easily picked up and set on top of Destrier.
As Corley rides up, Lord Validar engages the second troll. His armor protects him from a second round of attacks, but the troll has no defense against his longsword. A powerful strike slices the creature in half, sending parts of it flying. Arocken is quickly on the scene, setting fire to the troll remains.
While that is going on, Lord Corley drops off the girl who rushes to Lyonessa for protection. They are joined by the boy Validar saved earlier.
Corley rides towards the door to the left hand tower, trailed by Laucian. As Corley gets closer he dismounts from Destrier. Up ahead he can see into the nearby stable as the doors are wide open. The stench of death can be smelled and blood ruins the inside of the stable. Several horses can be seen laying on the ground disemboweled.
While this is going on, orcs on the top of the left-hand tower fire arrows down into the courtyard. Laucian is hit once and Validar takes another glancing hit. All other shafts hit the ground harmlessly.
Joined by Laucian, Corley advances on the door to the ground floor of the tower. The door opens easily and a 5' wide corridor is behind it. A few feet away is an open door and inside the sounds of inhuman creatures can be heard. They can't tell how many there are inside, only that it sounds like more than four. There are two other closed doors in the corridor further along.
In the right-hand tower, Lord Acerion charges down the stairs leading from the roof in pursuit of a pair of goblins. He easily catches the pair with his fast strides. The Axe of the Valorous lashes out and nearly obliterates the pair. The axe glows in the presence of the foul creatures.
This action does not go unnoticed as several orcs in the area move towards Acerion. Several fire crossbow bolts, but do not hit the mark. Behind Acerion, Chareos casts Magic Missile and spreads it over three orcs. One of the trio drops from the attack.
Down the right-hand corridor a larger than normal orc appears. He trudges down the passageway towards Acerion. He wears plate mail armor and carries a sword and a flail in his hands. It is an orog, a more advanced form of orc.
On the nearby Gatehouse Roof, Sherra moves among the smoldering remains of orcs and goblins courtesy of Argent's fireball. She spots movement on the top of the left-hand tower. Several orcs are up there and they are firing arrows down on those in the courtyard!
Sherra takes aim and fires. One orc cries out in pain as he is hit by an arrow and disappears from Sherra's sight. The second shaft is high and sails harmlessly over the target.
Argent sets down on the top of the wall over the gateway leading into the city. Below her, a pair of portcullis are open, allowing access into the city. On the top of the wall a pair of simple winch mechanisms control the portcullis. A thick chain embedded in the stone floor is attached to the winch's handle, locking the winch in place. Remove it and the handle is free to move, allowing the portcullis to fall.
Argent tries to remove the chain by hand, but does not have the strength to move it even with her enhanced strength. The door to the far tower swings open and four humanoids rush out! Spotting the Invoker, they move to the attack!
Outside on the plains, Grondar, Ivy, and Po have reached the refugees with Bella and son in tow. They leave the newborn and his mother with Orin near the front of the group. The trio then continues onward to aid their teammates. They reach the Vesubian Bridge and begin to cross.

GM Notes
GM Notes:
Grondar can move twice as fast as Ivy and Po. If he uses his full speed, he can be across the bridge in this round while Ivy and Po are just beginning to cross. This would put Grondar within visual range of Lyonessa and Validar, but not yet in the courtyard with them. He'd be on the other side of the Gatehouse from them.
The combat map has been updated and expanded to show all three levels of the complex and where everyone inside it are at.
Current Hit Points:
Acerion - 44 of 46
Grondar - 47 of 52
Havoc - 22 of 24
Laucian - 59 of 64
Validar - 72 of 76
Now what?

Grondar:
[Assuming that Orin is up to the task and there don't appear to be any current dangers to the refugees...]
With his magic boots, Grondar is able to easily outdistance Ivy and Po. He moves to about the middle of the bridge with his crossbow and looks for any targets while the other two catch up. He will fire if a target presents itself.
It is very important to Grondar that these refugees remain safe. Only if he is certain that Orin can keep the group safe until they return will he join Ivy and Po in advancing on the gatehouse.Ivy wrote:Once near the front, Ivy will inform Orin of what has transpired. "We're going to go help clear the way. Can you take care of these two for the moment?"

Corley
Corley:
The young girl rushes forward at Corley's invitation and is quickly lifted up on top of Destrier. Lord Validar finishes off the last troll as Corley rides up. The girl is dropped off again and she rushes to Lyonessa for protection.
Continuing on, Lord Corley rides deeper into the courtyard. He spies the open stable up ahead and begins to ride towards it as it would be a safe place to put Destrier while the battle rages. Instead he comes to a sudden halt as he sees the remains of several noble steeds laying on the ground in pools of blood!
"By the Crown!", Corley calls out in a mixture of shock and rage. "Is there no end to the vile depredations of these evil creatures?"
The sound of arrows whizzing through the air brings Corley back to the current situation. Archers on the top of the tower Corley was riding towards are firing on us!
Dropping from Destrier, Corley shoos his horse away for safety. He then rushes towards the door leading into the tower. As he nears the door, Corley realizes that Laucian has joined him. Nodding to the elf, Corley opens the door and steps inside.
A hallway with several doors in it leads away. The closest door is open and inhuman sounding voices can be heard inside. Corley will gesture for Laucian to follow and be ready for battle. Stepping gingerly forward, Corley will try to quietly reach the door. Once there he will burst inside and engage whatever lies inside in battle. Unless they are not goblinoids that is!

Argent Alone
Argent:
The Invoker lands on the wall top near the controls for the gates to the inner city. They are nothing complicated, simply winches to manually raise and lower the gates below. They are locked in place by a thick chain attached to mechanism's handle. Remove the chain and the gates will drop.
Reaching out Argent grabs the chain and gives it a yank. It doesn't even budge, in spite of her magically augmented strength!
"Brute force alone isn't going to solve this problem", the Invoker reasons to herself.
Inspiration strikes her and she pulls her staff out from her Bag of Holding. Perhaps using it as lever will generate sufficient force to make the chain move off the handle.
Before she test out her theory, a nearby door swings open and four unfriendlies rush out!
"Yikes!", Argent cries out. Regaining her composure, she drops her staff and casts Magic Missile at the group. Spread the missiles so that two enemies are struck by two, one by one, and one enemy remains untouched.

I am an Invoker of no small power.
Ivy
Ivy:
Thankful to have safely reached the refugees, Ivy is eager to get back into the thick of things. That is until Grondar breaks up the point of making sure the refugees are safe.
To Grondar she'll say, "Go on ahead. You're much faster than we are. Po and I will remain to insure their safety. We'll lead them across the bridge once we see the all clear signal. Their safety should be my most important concern, not seeking battle."
Once Grondar is away, and working with Orin, Ivy will lead the group closer to the bridge, but will not begin to cross it. She anxiously awaits the signal to bring the refugees across.

Crossbow loaded and in-hand, Grondar races across the bridge, watching for targets as he goes.

Under the circumstances, Grondar won't stop mid-bridge as previously posted. Better to get his healing skills to the others in case they may be needed. After all, he has no idea how the battle inside is going.

Lord Validar's Henchmen
Po -
Po is ready to cross the bridge, when Ivy says to Grondar that she and he will remain with the refugees.
"I thought I should join the others, but Lord Validar did say to protect the refugees until they were in the Gatehouse." Po will look for the signal to move forward, a little thankful that he is not in the thick of the fighting and a little disappointed that he is not in the thick of the fighting.
Arocken -
Having completed setting fire to each of the downed trolls to make sure they do no arise again, Arocken will look to his friend.
"I shall take the left tower and you can take the right one," he says with a grin, indicating the farther towers that Argent is currently between. With a war cry, he rushes forward and heads for the door to that tower, ready to hack anything in his way.

Conquer or Die!
The courtyard has been cleared...
Lord Validar -
Seeing that the courtyard of the Vesubian Gatehouse has been cleared, Lord Validar looks around at the situation quickly. There is not much enemy fire left coming from the tower parapets and most of his comrades cannot be seen, so likely they are taking the fight inside the towers to the enemy.
Arocken - "I shall take the left tower and you can take the right one," he says with a grin, indicating the farther towers that Argent is currently between. With a war cry, he rushes forward and heads for the door to that tower, ready to hack anything in his way.
Seeing Argent's Magic Missiles light up the top of the wall, Validar agrees. "Get to the top as quickly as you can so that we can secure the gates. Once we control them, we have realized our defensive position!"
Validar will head across the courtyard as quickly as his armored form allows him and rush into the door in the center of the 3 smaller towers. He will enter and engage any humanoids he encounters, while looking for the stairwell up to the roof.

Lyonessa:
The fighting in the courtyard has come to a stop and Lyonessa finds herself protecting not one, but two survivors.
While that is going on, Lord Corley drops off the girl who rushes to Lyonessa for protection. They are joined by the boy Validar saved earlier.
A few arrows rain down but seem to be only a minor nuisance. Still, Lyonessa will make sure she finds a safe spot for herself and her two charges before one of those arrows gets lucky.
She watches the rest of the warriors rush into the towers and feels as though the battle has escaped her. Still, she will not allow these two to be left alone. Suddenly she is aware of Grondar approaching, which must mean the rest of the refugees as well as Ivy and Po are not far behind!
Crossbow loaded and in-hand, Grondar races across the bridge, watching for targets as he goes.
"Grondar!" Lyonessa will call out once he is close enough. "They are all in or on the towers. There is still fierce fighting inside!"
She will continue to guard over the two in her care, defending them and herself if necessary. If she spots any other survivors, she will beckon them to her side.

Laucian
Watching Lord Corley urge the refugee toward Lyonessa and quickly ushering his mount away, Laucian does the same with his mount and begins to follow Lord Corley.
Having minimal cover Laucian is struck in the arm and the elf lets out a groan as it pierces his armor. As they reach the doors Laucian pulls the arrow from his arm with a grimace and tosses it to the ground. It is then that he sees the stables and the poor animals that met a cruel fate.
"By the Crown!", Corley calls out in a mixture of shock and rage. "Is there no end to the vile depredations of these evil creatures?"
"You have seen but a taste of what these creatures are capable of. Come the night is just begun and we have much to accomplish."
As he reaches the corridor he overhears the inhuman mutterings of the humaniods. He listens for a few moments and the words become clearer. Recognizing the creatures as goblins he mouths to Corley, "Goblins"
Soon after Corley motions to be quiet and be ready for battle. Quietly drawing two arrows one nocked the other in his bow hand he slides the arrow into place ready to fire. He will follow Lord Corley though a few paces farther back. He will let loose at the further goblins (if they are seated say the 4 or 5th on in) within the room.

Sherra:
"That'll teach you to not poke your head out," Sherra says more for own amusement, not even sure if those orcs understand the common tongue. Things have been going pretty well, but Sherra isn't quite ready to celebrate yet. She spots something across the way that attracts her attention.
Sherra will ignore the orcs above her and turn to help Argent. She will fire a volley into the approaching orcs in the hopes that, combined with Argent's own magical attack, they can clear the enemy quickly so Argent can finish her task unmolested.Argent tries to remove the chain by hand, but does not have the strength to move it even with her enhanced strength. The door to the far tower swings open and four humanoids rush out! Spotting the Invoker, they move to the attack!
"Yikes!", Argent cries out. Regaining her composure, she drops her staff and casts Magic Missile at the group. Spread the missiles so that two enemies are struck by two, one by one, and one enemy remains untouched.
Acerion
Acerion:
In the right-hand tower, Lord Acerion charges down the stairs leading from the roof in pursuit of a pair of goblins. He easily catches the pair with his fast strides. The Axe of the Valorous lashes out and nearly obliterates the pair. The axe glows in the presence of the foul creatures.
This action does not go unnoticed as several orcs in the area move towards Acerion. Several fire crossbow bolts, but do not hit the mark. Behind Acerion, Chareos casts Magic Missile and spreads it over three orcs. One of the trio drops from the attack.
Acerion pays no attention to the poorly-fired crossbow bolts as he removes his axe from the second of the doomed goblins he just felled. Chareos lets loose with some magic and drops one of the orcs moving in to try their luck. Acerion merely smirks as he hefts his holy axe upright and prepares for another swing.
Down the right-hand corridor a larger than normal orc appears. He trudges down the passageway towards Acerion. He wears plate mail armor and carries a sword and a flail in his hands. It is an orog, a more advanced form of orc.
As he squares off with one of the orcs facing him, he takes notice of a larger foe, an orog the paladin believes they are called, appearing down a side corridor. "Looks like the local boss," Acerion says to Chareos with a head nod in the orog's direction.
Acerion will look to make short work of the orcs that block him from advancing upon the orog. He will not leave Chareos dangerously outnumbered however, and is patient enough to let the orog come to him.

Glancing down the corridor he sees a large foe amble towards them with weapons in hand. "Why are the leaders always uglier than the rest?" he will add with a smirk. Changing his target he will send his Iron Spikes spell into the oncoming Orog.
