New Frontiers #45
The horde of hobgoblins and bugbears has been broken. Many of the creatures attempt to flee while others suffer from the lingering effects of Lyonessa's Glitterdust spell. Several of the Guardians continue to attack the retreating enemy.
Sherra and Arocken continue their arrow bombardment. Each of their arrows strikes true and each slays four hobgoblins in as many shots.
Chareos strikes a bugbear that was advancing on him with his staff. The giant humanoid is sent staggering back and falls to the ground in the grip of death.
Laucian continues his assault with his longsword and dagger combination. A hobgoblin near himself and Lyonessa is his target and the goblinoid goes down. Acerion stands ready near by, but none of the remaining horde approach.
Lord Validar, still astride Havoc, continues to strike with his longsword. A hobgoblin and a bugbear are ridden down from his efforts.
Lastly, Lord Corley serves as the last line of defense, preventing any of the enemy from slipping past him. A pair of hobgoblins and a bugbear meet their end attempting to flee from the young lord.
In a matter of minutes, the combat is over and the enemy slain.
With things settled down, the Guardians can see the make-up of the fifty or so refugees. They are primarily children, some women, and a few old men. It is easy to tell that none here can properly wield a weapon, let alone stand against a foe in combat.
These people have little more than the clothes on their backs. Most shiver in the cold and several have no shoes. The most seriously wounded huddle around Ivy and are healed via the magical enhancement provided by her enchanted mace. The Kiss of Azrella lives up to its name and those around Ivy feel the powerful healing magic of the Blue Lady.
Likewise, Grondar, Laucian, and Lyonessa find themselves swarmed by those seeking help. Most of the people here are not hurt, but several bear the marks of weapon wounds and a few have burns to their body. Everyone here is weary, but happy to be alive. Numerous children cry and call out for their mothers and fathers, but receive no answer.
A shrieking cry of pain pierces the night air. A woman in great pain can be heard. "It is Bella!", an unknown voice calls out. "She is with child!"
Those Priests in the area will be shown to the young woman named Bella. It is a girl in her late teens/early twenties who is full with child. She lies on the ground, face flushed with pain. "My baby!", Bella pants. "My baby is coming! Help me!"
When Validar and Chareos attempt to question the group, a man who appears to be in his thirties limps forward. "You have our thanks and gratitude, milords! I am Orin, a former member of the guard until one of these devils took my leg a few years back. I led this group in our attempt to find shelter."
While Orin is indeed young and fit, you'll note that his right leg is missing and he hobbles about on a wooden crutch. He will relate what he knows about what has transpired.
"It was supposed to be a great victory celebration for the city," Orin will relate. "The mighty wizard Drakkimor had liberated Fort Runnels from the humanoid hordes that had held it for all these years. A great feast was planned to celebrate this great achievement and a division of guards was sent to occupy the fort."
"This horror all started three nights ago, on the night of the feast at the Duke's fortress. I was at home with my wife and son when the alarm bells sounded. Every able-bodied man and woman took up their arms to defend the city against invasion. But somehow the invaders were already inside the city and swarming!"
"I saw-- ," Orin says with a sob, "I saw my son go forth to protect the city while I could not. He was overwhelmed by orcs and stabbed repeatedly before my eyes! So in shock was I that the orcs saw me standing there and rushed our home. I managed to bar the door and my wife and I fled out the back. People were running everywhere, being chased by orcs, goblins, even kobolds. An orc arrow took my wife from me. She died in my arms..."
Choked with grief Orin pauses in his tale. He continues after regaining his composure.
"Those of us who cannot fight tried to make it to the shelters for safety, but there was no time. The enemy was already inside and the streets of Corunglain became filled with bodies. Someone dragged me from my wife's body to safety."
"We hid where we could while trying to avoid the hordes. By now the shelters were all sealed and were no longer an option. Most of the fortifications were either overrun or were continuing to fight the enemy. They were not safe to approach. Our only choice seemed to be to flee the city."
"We made our way through Southtown towards the Vesubian Gate. I had noticed that over the days the enemy forces were comprised of creatures who were only seen during the day and those seen only at night. As if they had a duty rotation. We made for the gate as twilight set in and ran across. It had been overrun earlier and the gate was wide open. I guess one of the devils spotted us and they ran after us."
Orin falls to the ground, as if the strain of his story was too much to bear. "Those miserable creatures took everything I ever loved away from me! Give me a weapon so that I can fight them! I swear by the gods, that I will avenge my wife and son or die in the attempt! I'll kill them! I'll kill them all!"

GM Notes
GM Notes:
The weapons from the humanoids can be easily collected. None of them are special, ranging from spears to short swords, bastard swords, clubs, morning stars, and flails. Many had shortbows and 189 arrows can be collected.
Corunglain sits in the middle of a Y shaped formation of rivers. The Streel River flows in from the eastern side of the Y and continues on to the south. The Vesubian River comes in from the west from the Broken Lands and merges with the Streel.
There are three land gates going into Corunglain. The Vesubian Gate, the South Gate, and the North Gate. As you might expect the Vesubian Gate spans the Vesubian River. The other two gates span the Streel River. All three gates are large stone bridges that span the fast flowing waters. Each bridge has two supports in the river itself before reaching the city.
Much like Rennydale, Corunglain is mostly surrounded by a 15' high stone wall. The city itself can be divided up into five distinct districts.
The only unwalled section of the city is the docks district on the southern tip of the city. This is where the river barges dock to load/unload cargo. Numerous warehouses, ship building/repair facilities, and other related businesses can be found in this area. Every other area of the town is walled and access between areas is by guarded gates.
The next area of Corunglain is Southtown. This is the area for the shops and manufacturing in Corunglain. The Vesubian Gate and Southgate give access to this area. Another gate leads to the docks, while two more gates lead to the next part of the city: Northtown.
Northtown is the primary residential area of the city. The Northgate spanning the Streel River is in this district. Two more gates lead out of Northtown. One leads to the Green Valley district, where most of the nobility live and the other to the Duke's star shaped fortress.
To enter the city, the Guardians will have to make their way across the Vesubian Bridge and the Gatehouse that guards it. The gatehouse is made up of two three-story towers with connecting walkways on top. There are innumerable arrow slits in the structure. A drawbridge connects the Gatehouse to the bridge. It is currently down.
Oh, and Bella is having her baby.

Ivy
Ivy:
Ivy finds herself among the refugees and her heart can't help but go out to them. They are cold and shivering, children cry for their missing parents. More than a few tears can't help but find their way down Ivy's face.
Her healing spell seems to have helped many of those here, but it is only temporary. Safe shelter must be found and quickly or many will die.
A cry of pain reaches Ivy's ears and she looks off in that direction, intent on easing that person's suffering.
Turning away from Bella, Ivy will yell, "I need blankets over here right now! A child is about to be born and it will need to be kept warm!"
Turning back to Bella, Ivy rolls up her sleeves and sets about helping the young woman give birth to her child.

Those words cause Ivy to rush as fast as she can to the side of the mother to be."It is Bella!", an unknown voice calls out. "She is with child!"
Reaching Bella, Ivy will kneel down to lend aid. "I am here, Bella. Don't you worry, my order is trained to be midwives. You and your child are in safe hands."Those Priests in the area will be shown to the young woman named Bella. It is a girl in her late teens/early twenties who is full with child. For the glory of the Blue Lady!
The situation looks grim...
Lord Validar -
The noble surveys the area and sees that all of the enemy have been dispatched to their dark gods. With a nod of satisfaction, Validar continues on with his actions.
When Validar and Chareos attempt to question the group, a man who appears to be in his thirties limps forward. "You have our thanks and gratitude, milords! I am Orin, a former member of the guard until one of these devils took my leg a few years back. I led this group in our attempt to find shelter."
"You did well, Orin of Corunglain. Truly you are a brave individual and these people have you to thank as much as us."
After Orin's tale is completed, Lord Validar feels sorrow for the man. His tale is one of continued heartbreak. "You may have your chance to help defend the gatehouse when we take it back."
Validar will see how the organization of the refugees is going. "Clerics, we need to get these people ready to move as soon as possible. The gatehouse is open and the drawbridge down. We have an opportunity to strike now. Arm whomever is able to carry a weapon, even in self-defense."
Validar will then see Ivy working on the pregnant woman and Validar closes his eyes in frustration and concern as he sees that a baby is about to be born. Standing behind Ivy, but not in a position to interrupt her actions, he will ask, "How soon will the baby arrive? And how quickly can we move them?"
Validar will address the group with his plan. "Our most important task will be to secure that gatehouse. We need to make our attack quickly and efficiently and secure it as best we can."
"We have the advantage of an air attack and the fact that the gates are open and the drawbridge is down. Corunglain's gatehouse towers generally house about 30 soldiers each, so we should be looking at no more than 100 enemy there even if completely occupied and guarded. If we move swiftly and together, then we will be successful."
"Argent can fly and will be our 'warmachine' for this attack. Get enough altitude to not be seen and come down over the top of the gatehouse, slightly inside the walls. If there are a large grouping of humanoids around the gatehouse area, then she can Fireball them. Otherwise, she will be our eyes on the scene from above. Do not worry about troops on the gatehouse, unless there is an obvious target of opportunity: shaman, mage or leader."
"Lord Acerion can take Chareos on his Pegasus and land on one of the towers. They will take the one on the right as we approach. They should be strong enough to deal with any remaining enemies on the tower and move down the towers to secure the drawbridge controls and the gates. Chareos can use his Lightning Wand to clear the top of the Gatehouse crenellations or towers if needed."
"Sherra, Laucian and Arocken will move in and give us covering ranged bow fire. Meanwhile, Lord Corley, Grondar and myself will ride in or in Grondar's case, likely run, and take the left tower from the bottom. Once inside, the archers will follow, splitting up and taking firing positions in the towers."
Once we close the inner gates and secure them, then Ivy, Lyonessa and Po, who will be protecting the refugees keeping them out of bowfire range until then, will move in. We will then get them into the gatehouse and secure all the gates and close the drawbridge."
"What do the rest of you think?"

Conquer or Die!
Sherra has an idea..
Sherra:
Sherra continues to fire her bow, and something about it strikes up a memory from her days long ago as a pirate. She has to force herself to remember that these hobgoblins are evil and are no way worthy of mourning like all those sailors she had cut down on the decks of ships that her old pirate captain had wanted as a prize.
Once the deed is over, she will join in the collecting of arrows, taking only ones that will fly true. She doubts these humanoids know how to craft impressive arrows. She will also pick up another short sword since the battles to come may require as many weapons as she can carry.
She joins the others as Validar explains the plan for the next stage. The strategy sounds solid, except for the fact that crossing the bridge will be the most dangerous part for the riders who will not be able to return fire. Suddenly, Sherra remembers something and interjects, "I have something that may be of use."
Carefully, she opens her scroll case and removes a battered sheet of parchment. Producing it, she explains, "It's a Wall of Fog spell. I'm not sure what level the scriber of the scroll was, so I'm not sure how much area it can effect, but the way I understand the spell it can be manipulated pretty decently to cover the ground we need it to. Given that it's night, or early dawn at the latest, when we will probably attack, a fog would not seem odd. If we cover the bridge, then the riders can ride with the benefits of cover as long as they ride straight for the gates. We can probably even set it just above the ground so that riders will at least be able to see the bridge they are riding across."
Allowing time for everyone to take in the possible addition to the plan, she will turn to Validar with a playful grin, "Besides, we don't want you sprouting any arrows, now do we?"

"An excellent suggestion," Validar will respond. While the spell may prove useful later on, the taking of the gatehouse is of the utmost importance. "It may not be necessary for the taking of the defensive position. But it will make this next step sure to be successful."
"If you are not of an objective mind, then I think Argent would be the best choice for the casting of the spell on the scroll. We may need your archery skill to help clear the tower ramparts and Argent should be able to approach close enough without being seen since she is coming in from above. This addition does not change any of the other plans and will certainly help to shield the approach of the refugees from anyone else."

Conquer or Die!
Acerion
Acerion:
His help turns out to not be needed as the handful of hobgoblins are cut down rather quickly. Once it is done, Acerion will remove his helm to let some of the trapped heat that his body generated during the fight inside his armor escape faster and to drink in the night air as it cools him.
"Lord Acerion can take Chareos on his Pegasus and land on one of the towers. They will take the one on the right as we approach. They should be strong enough to deal with any remaining enemies on the tower and move down the towers to secure the drawbridge controls and the gates. Acerion will approach Chareos, "It would be wise for you two to familiarize yourself with one another," he will say to him while indicating his pegasus. "I would not want you thrown while in mid-flight simply because you were accidently viewed as a stranger and potentially a threat."
Acerion has nothing more to add to the plan the way it has been presented. He lets his attention stray to watching Ivy help with the peasant woman and her arriving infant. Then he will return to making sure his pegasus will be fine with Chareos and their coming task.

Chareos
After the task at hand Chareos approaches the group, Lord Validar and Chareos soon get answers.
When Validar and Chareos attempt to question the group, a man who appears to be in his thirties limps forward. "You have our thanks and gratitude, milords! I am Orin, a former member of the guard until one of these devils took my leg a few years back. I led this group in our attempt to find shelter."
Placing his hand on the man's shoulder he will say, "You have done well, my friend." Feeling sorrow he will add, "I am sorry for your loss. If it is your wish then you shall have it. As well as my promise. I will see that the pain these creatures have caused you is revisited back on them ten-fold."
After Validar sees to Ivy, Chareos will approach the young noble out of earshot from the refugees. "There may be more to what this man has spoken of. I believe Fort Runnels was ever retaken more so just a diversion to lessen thenstrength of the guard and preoccupy those within. It all makes sense, does it not? If I am correct we may wish to seek out this Drakkimor, if he still lives."
Leaning on his staff he listens to the plan for taking the Gatehouse, never being in a fight of this caliber before, he will say to himself, "We are in for a long night it would seem. Let us hope Tymora smiles on us."
Acerion will approach Chareos, "It would be wise for you two to familiarize yourself with one another," he will say to him while indicating his pegasus. "I would not want you thrown while in mid-flight simply because you were accidently viewed as a stranger and potentially a threat."
"Yes Indeed, I have some experiance with horses but none with such a steed as yours. Let us hope he finds me to his liking." Thinking for a moment he will add, "Would you mind accompanying me? I would not wish to spook him nor feel his hooves." He will ask with a nervous smile.
Placing his hand on the man's shoulder he will say, "You have done well, my friend." Feeling sorrow he will add, "I am sorry for your loss. If it is your wish then you shall have it. As well as my promise. I will see that the pain these creatures have caused you is revisited back on them ten-fold."

Laucian
After the humanoids are dispatched, Laucian cleans his blades off and stows them back in their sheaths. He begins to gather arrows from the dead. Looking up towards the refugees he takes note of how many women and children there are. For a few moments he is lost in thought; he soon speaks sullenly, "So many. It is as though history is repeating itself," thinking back to stories he was told.
He soon begins to help the refugees with their injuries with bandages the best that he can and give words of encouragement to them. But then the cries of children calling for their loved ones is heard with no reply. His heart goes out to them for he knows their pain all too well. He soon approaches those in turn that he can and comforts them with words the best he can.
Hearing Ivy's cry for aid Laucian will fetch a blanket and robe from his mount and return with it. "Is there anything else you may require?"
After a time Validar addresses the group on the actions we are going to partake in.
Laucian will have nothing to add nor suggest. He will merely ask,"When do you wish to begin?"

Ivy
Ivy:
"The baby will take as much time as it wants. It may be a matter of minutes, it may be hours. There is no way to tell with these things. I would guess that all this rushing about has sent Bella into labor. Its possible that her labor pains will subside and the babe not be born this night."
"We have no choice but to move them immediately. They'll both need a safe and warm environment. We'll need a litter to move Bella as she's in no condition to move quickly. She'll have to be carried. I can carry the baby."
Ivy will cover Bella with the robe to keep her warm and place the blanket to be on hand so that she can place the baby in it.
Ivy continues to work on Bella as she answers Lord Validar's questions.Validar will then see Ivy working on the pregnant woman and Validar closes his eyes in frustration and concern as he sees that a baby is about to be born. Standing behind Ivy, but not in a position to interrupt her actions, he will ask, "How soon will the baby arrive? And how quickly can we move them?"

Save perhaps a prayer said for us to survive this night."Hearing Ivy's cry for aid Laucian will fetch a blanket and robe from his mount and return with it. "Is there anything else you may require?"

Argent:
"I guess that makes sense. Perhaps we can hope that someone made it out of the city when the attack first began and is getting aid. Perhaps by river barge since that seems the safest route to take."
The Invoker listens as Lord Validar explains why we won't be sending someone to alert the surrounding areas.Lord Validar wrote:"The thought crossed my mind, but I do not think we have that luxury. We are a day's ride from Rennydale and if the humanoids are attacking here, we cannot be certain that there are not more roving bands seeking to capture escapees from Corunglain. One or two of us would not be as easy a fight against a large band of humanoids. Also we do not have the luxury of losing any of us, especially two or three. All of us will be necessary in this battle and the winning of Corunglain. Perhaps if we could rally some troops, we may have the chance to send some of them to warn Lord Cavius of the danger here."
"I guess that makes sense. Perhaps we can hope that someone made it out of the city when the attack first began and is getting aid. Perhaps by river barge since that seems the safest route to take."
"I am well versed in how to use my spells, Lord Validar. I have no need for such instructions."Lord Validar wrote:"Very good. I would suggest we use the fireball on enemy on the walls or better outside the city. Perhaps the same can be said of Ice Storm. I do not know the usage of this Scorcher spell you mention. As for Magic Missiles, our best use for them will be against any humanoid shamans or any other spell-casters that may be in their midst. Or else perhaps against some of the most powerful fighters in their ranks to quickly down dangerous opponents."
Argent will simply nod her understanding at her role in the battle to come. Before the attack is to begin, Argent will cast Strength, Fly, Halo of Eyes, and Shield upon herself.Lord Validar wrote:"Argent can fly and will be our 'warmachine' for this attack.
Sherra's statement will catch the attention of Argent's ears. "I am familiar with the magic", the Invoker will state. "I have the very same spell in my book. The bridge is too long to be completely covered, but if we place the far end of the fog at the Gatehouse, it would prevent anyone riding up from being seen. The fog obscures all sight and while goblinoids have infravision much like our elven friends, there is a limited range to it. The magic will not last long and strong winds may break it up even faster. My advice would be to ride hard as soon as the spell is cast to reach the gatehouse before the fog dissipates."Sherra wrote:Carefully, she opens her scroll case and removes a battered sheet of parchment.
If Sherra is willing to give up her scroll, Argent will accept it and place it in her scroll case for safe keeping.Lord Validar wrote:"If you are not of an objective mind, then I think Argent would be the best choice for the casting of the spell on the scroll. We may need your archery skill to help clear the tower ramparts and Argent should be able to approach close enough without being seen since she is coming in from above. This addition does not change any of the other plans and will certainly help to shield the approach of the refugees from anyone else."
I am an Invoker of no small power.
An imminent attack...
Lord Validar -
After Validar sees to Ivy, Chareos will approach the young noble out of earshot from the refugees. "There may be more to what this man has spoken of. I believe Fort Runnels was ever retaken more so just a diversion to lessen the strength of the guard and preoccupy those within. It all makes sense, does it not? If I am correct we may wish to seek out this Drakkimor, if he still lives."
"Lord Cavius warned us that there was trouble in Corunglain, but was not certain of its form. It seems this may be the result of that which worried him. In fact, Fort Runnels may not have been liberated at all, and this was just a pretense not only to weaken the defenses, but even to defeat a portion of Corunglain's soldiers in an ambush."
"But I doubt that Drakkimor is involved in this attack, either directly or indirectly. Sherwood mentioned that one of his followers was a Priestess of Heironeous. She would not be involved in such a thing and still be a follower of him to be certain. And we freed all the people from the Balck Water influence a full day before this battle was to have started, in which case, Drakkimor would have remembered and warned everyone."
"However, the enemy could have used the fort situation to lure troops away from here to Runnels to make it easier to take the city. It is a cunning tactic."
Leaning on his staff he listens to the plan for taking the Gatehouse, never being in a fight of this caliber before, he will say to himself, "We are in for a long night it would seem. Let us hope Tymora smiles on us."
"We may be in for several long nights, my friend. I do not see our actions as sufficient to liberate Corunglain in one attack or even two. This will be the greatest battle any of us have ever been in as yet."
The Invoker listens as Lord Validar explains why we won't be sending someone to alert the surrounding areas. "I guess that makes sense. Perhaps we can hope that someone made it out of the city when the attack first began and is getting aid. Perhaps by river barge since that seems the safest route to take."
"That would be wonderful if someone escaped the city and is alerting others to the situation here. We can be certain that Rennydale did not know before we left unfortunately, or we would have been made aware as well."
"If not, then we shall do so when we have the ability to do so without weakening ourselves. A small group of Corunglain cavalry should be sufficient if we can control the gatehouse."
Argent - "I am well versed in how to use my spells, Lord Validar. I have no need for such instructions."
"Yes, I am aware from our conversation that you are, but this was also for everyone else's benefit. We all need to know what to expect and what will be happening once the attack begins. Further, our biggest fault in the attack on Castle Cavius was people acting without taking into consideration what you spellcasters are capable of. That battle was begun without the opportunity for planning we have here and this one is also many times more difficult. Individuality does not serve well in a war of this magnitude."
Sherra's statement will catch the attention of Argent's ears. "I am familiar with the magic", the Invoker will state. "I have the very same spell in my book. "Covering the entire bridge is not as important as simply blocking the views from the gatehouse ramparts and towers. Can you make the Wall taller rather than deeper? If they cannot see through it at the Gatehouse walls then covering the entire bridge is not as vital."
Validar watches Lord Acerion and Chareos go to ready themselves for their part in the attack, while Ivy responds to his questions.
"I like the sounds of that, Ivy of Azrella." Lord Validar will stand with a flourish. "Make ready everyone! We are moving out immediately!" Validar will stop to place his heavy cloak over the shoulders of a shivering, barefoot young lady who is trying to help keep two frightened children calm as well. He will then stride to Havok and mount his warhorse, waiting for everyone to assemble.
Once Argent, Acerion and Chareos are all airborne, the group will move out. Validar will then lead the charge over the bridge when the fog begins to take form.

Conquer or Die!
Lyonessa:
Likewise, Grondar, Laucian, and Lyonessa find themselves swarmed by those seeking help. Most of the people here are not hurt, but several bear the marks of weapon wounds and a few have burns to their body. Everyone here is weary, but happy to be alive. Numerous children cry and call out for their mothers and fathers, but receive no answer.
Lyonessa will tend to those that need it, and offer words of comfort and encouragement to those who suffer no physical pain. The crying children tear at her very heart, but she thinks of something that might help.
While Ivy helps the pregnant woman and the others talk of battle plans that don't seem to include her, Lyonessa sits down and begins to play a very soft melody. She will smile at the children and beckon them to come sit with her, and any others who wish to listen. While she plays, she will softly sing a tale that will transport the children far from these fields of battle to a better place filled with laughter and sunshine. She will not make the melody one that will put them to sleep for it sounds like we will be moving out soon, but rather one that erases their fears, if only for a time.

My voice, my will, my magic - three blessings bestowed by Mystra that spell your doom
further details..
Sherra:
Sherra will hand the scroll over to Argent and go to prepare for the coming attack.
Sherra will listen to everything Validar and Argent have to say on the matter before replying. "The spell is very adaptable despite its shortcomings," she will begin. "I can read the spell probably as clear as Argent sees it, but it would be better in my opinion too if she is able to cast it. I would hate to trip over a pronounciation and ruin the spell since I do not have the experience that she does. Also, she will have the best vantage point to best lay the fog. From my understanding infravision is just as hampered as regular vision when trying to pierce the fog's layers. Unless they have a spell caster prepared with a spell to blow the fog away, I'm pretty positive it will last long enough for the riders to cross the bridge, especially at a quick pace."Sherra's statement will catch the attention of Argent's ears. "I am familiar with the magic", the Invoker will state. "I have the very same spell in my book. Acerion:
"Yes Indeed, I have some experiance with horses but none with such a steed as yours. Let us hope he finds me to his liking." Thinking for a moment he will add, "Would you mind accompanying me? I would not wish to spook him nor feel his hooves." He will ask with a nervous smile.
"Yes I fully intended on accompanying you," Acerion will reply. "My apologies if I had not made myself clear."
Once (hopefully) his pegasus and Chareos get comfortable around one another, Acerion will move into position. He will also make sure the pegasus will be able to handle the additional load as he wants neither himself or Chareos falling from such a height, let alone putting too much strain on his mount.

Advancing on Corunglain
Grondar:
"What exactly is it that makes them evil, Ivy? I would suggest that it is their savagery and their disregard for the lives of others. How then are we any better than they if we butcher them as blood-thirstily as they would us? Is not the point of being Good to set a higher moral standard than they - to show that there is a better way? Wholesale slaughter of these primitive humanoids - turning this place into an abattoir - brings our gods no glory."
Grondar cannot watch as his companions go about their bloody work. However, he has other things to do. The refugees have great need of their help, and he does his best to address that need. Ivy finds a miraculous means of spreading healing about a large group. "That is quite a wonder that you have performed here," Grondar says to the human priestess. "Such an ability may prove quite beneficial to us all. Can you do that with healing miracles invoked by myself and other priests?"
Seeing as Ivy appears to have handled the most serious injuries, Grondar will focus on non-magical healing; he strongly suspects that Berronar's blessings will be more greatly needed later. Pulling out his medical bag, he proceeds to bind the remaining injuries as needed. He also speaks with the refugees, trying to soothe nerves and support troubled spirits. As he works, Grondar overhears bits and pieces of the discussion of their next step in trying to retake Corunglain, but says nothing.
A cry is heard, and Ivy informs them that a baby will soon be born. Grondar smiles happily and moves to assist Ivy in caring for the mother. While he has not her experience in such matters, Grondar has been properly trained, and delights in the wonder that is childbirth. He will provide Ivy with any supplies or help that she needs.
Grondar takes note of his assignment in the attack on the gatehouse. It seems he is to be a footman in this assualt, rather than support. Either role works as well for him. Nevertheless, he will take his crossbow along, just in case he needs it. When the time comes to make the attack, Grondar will cast Prayer on all those who wish to receive it's blessings.
Validar wrote:"Yes, they are a plague," Validar will reitterate. "They are not even human and they are pure evil. They would slaughter our defenseless citizens and had we any other choice, then perhaps we could avoid unpleasant answers to this situation. But we are obviously, albeit suddenly and unexpectedly, at war and I cannot sacrifice the future in the slightest way by not making hard decisions now."
"In case you haven't noticed, I am not human, either. Am I therefore less deserving of mercy than you? And let's not kid ourselves here; the choice you are making is the expedient one, not the difficult one."Ivy wrote:"Normally I would be in agreement with you, friend Grondar, on the side of mercy. But I did see Lord Acerion's axe glow as it did engage the enemy. His weapon is constructed to counter evil. If noble Heironeous deems these creatures to be evil, then I will not question his divine wisdom. From what we can see Corunglain has been attacked. These people were fleeing for their lives while these creatures hunted them down like animals. My compassion goes out to these poor souls who have lost their homes and to those who have lost their lives. While I have vows that I must uphold, preventing these creatures from getting what they have earned is not among them."

Gordon (fanchergw AKA Kylie, Grondar, Yusef, Lily Pak / Menagerie)
Lord Validar -
Sherra will listen to everything Validar and Argent have to say on the matter before replying. Unless they have a spell caster prepared with a spell to blow the fog away, I'm pretty positive it will last long enough for the riders to cross the bridge, especially at a quick pace."
Sherra will hand the scroll over to Argent and go to prepare for the coming attack.
"Very good. I am sure this will help our advance, and especially that of the refugees. Let us go and take the gatehouse!"
Grondar - "In case you haven't noticed, I am not human, either. Am I therefore less deserving of mercy than you? And let's not kid ourselves here; the choice you are making is the expedient one, not the difficult one."
"Perhaps it was a poor choice of the word," Validar will concede. "I did not intend to refer to race, but rather to their morality, or rather their lack thereof, and their malignant and destructive influence on everything around them. Likely I should have said 'humane'."
"However, while our choice may be considered 'expedient', I do not apologize for that. It also does not preclude it from also being 'difficult'. By claiming that it is not, you imply at best that our morals are of severely lower standards than your own and at worst that we simply have no morals whatsoever and that such bloodshed is not only accepted, but desired. I assure you it is not. However, there are no other choices available. The hobgolins will not walk away never to return, the people here cannot guard them and if we do so then we are sacrificing others in the city that we could otherwise save. To not come to this conclusion jeopardizes anyone they come into contact with in the future. I will not have innocent blood on my hands simply in an effort to be NICE to these evil beings."
"Just because the decision is not one you agree with does not make it wrong. If the choice is to kill these monsters so that citizens of the Kingdom (human, dwarf, elf) will live, then I will make that choice EVERY time. My duty is not to them, but to my people."
"Further, we are not rampaging in their lands, slaughtering their females and young and capturing and torturing any we do not kill. When we do, then you can equate our actions with theirs and begin to ask if we are acting evil. Until then, the defense of our lands and our people will be completed with every means at our disposal. If that is what you deem 'expedient', then so be it."
"I do not care what glory the gods gain or not. Nor is the gaining of my own glory the goal here. It is to defeat the enemy in total. This war will never be over while the evil humanoids exist or until they are driven far from our borders. Trying to co-exist with evil is like trying to live in a home that is in the midst of a raging fire. Unless you stamp it out completely, it will ultimately consume you and all that you have."

Laucian begins to make ready some of the refugees as a debate of some scale begins to flourish. For the most part he pays it little heed but then something catches his ears.
“The likes of their kind have butchered, raped and pillaged these lands for as long as I can remember. As such, I have seen it first hand, as a child and an adult. I wonder, have you had your clan ripped from your eyes in mere moments? One moment you are just a child in your mother's arms then next you are fleeing for your very life. Your only wrong doing is being in their way.”
“I somehow doubt that there is any good in them, nor are they primitive in the art of war. Look around you! These people would be nothing more than memories if we did not intervene. The city lies in turmoil under their grasp. I wonder if the Drow fell upon your clan’s home, killing everything you know and loved, if you would be so merciful.”
“I recall hearing your voice over the battle speaking that they would never terrorize these people again. And you were right. They will never terrorize another living creature again whether it be human, elf, dwarf or any woodland creature.”
Afterward he will turn and move to his mount shaking his head in disbelief. Mounting up he will then move near the front of the column and be ready to move out.
“Nor am I Grondar nor am I. And I do not believe that is what Lord Validar intended it to mean.” Pausing for just a moment he adds, “How are they evil? You must have your head buried beneath this earth if you cannot see.”Validar wrote:
"Yes, they are a plague," Validar will reitterate.
Ivy wrote:
"Normally I would be in agreement with you, friend Grondar, on the side of mercy.
"In case you haven't noticed, I am not human, either. Am I therefore less deserving of mercy than you? And let's not kid ourselves here; the choice you are making is the expedient one, not the difficult one."

Is not the point of being Good to set a higher moral standard than they - to show that there is a better way? Scouting...
Lord Validar -
While we are waiting for the refugees to prepare and a make-shift litter is being crafted for the pregnant woman, Validar will gather Arocken and Laucian.
"I think we should take a quick scout to see what the situation is at the gatehouse. Nothing necessary to get too close, just whether it is heavily defended or not."
"Make sure you are not seen."

Post Continued
Post Continued:
The refugees fleeing Corunglain have been saved from the humanoid horde that was chasing them. While the priests tend to the refugees and an expectant mother, plans are made for what to do next.
Refugees:
After the initial round of healing and wound tending, Lyonessa begins to play a soft melody to lighten the spirits of those around her. There are only a few children gathered at first, but more quickly circle the Songstress. Their cries begin to fade as they are lost in the enchanting melody. Many of the adults stand with their children. The loud din begins to fade.
Close by, Ivy aided by Grondar tends to Bella, the expecting mother. A crude litter is being made to help transport the woman back to the city.
However, before she can be placed on it Bella's baby begins to emerge from the womb. The child is being born now!
Flight:
Acerion escorts Chareos over to his Pegasus. The winged mount will look over Chareos and snort in his direction. The Pegasus seems to be indifferent towards Chareos and will allow him to ride along with Acerion.
Once airborne, Acerion can feel that the combined weight is slowing the winged steed down. It is a strain, but one that it can endure for a short flight.
Once they are ready, Argent casts a series of magical spells. Three of the four provide no visible change to the Invoker. However, one of the spells does have a dramatic visible effect. A circle of eyes appears above Argent's head, permitting her to see in all directions at the same time.
Argent rises into the air and flies off into the night followed by Acerion and Chareos on the Pegasus. Below them, Arocken and Laucian ride forth to scout out the area around the Gatehouse. With Bella giving birth, the main force has yet to move out.
The Vesubian Gatehouse:
As the fliers and scouts get closer to the city, the Vesubian Bridge comes into sight. It is a thirty feet wide stone bridge that spans the fast flowing waters of the river. Estimates would place the bridge in the 130' long range. There are two bridge supports in the river to help bear the massive bridge.
At the far end of the bridge is the Vesubian Gatehouse. Two 25' high towers flank the Gatehouse, while the gatehouse itself is 15' high. The bridge leads over a huge drawbridge and into two side-by-side tunnels leading through the gatehouse to a small courtyard beyond. The drawbridge is down and the iron gates that block the tunnels are raised. On the other side of the gatehouse is a small defensive courtyard. The roads split at this point and each go out another, smaller gatehouse and into the city.
Laucian and Arocken can see through the open gates and into the courtyard. A few fires are burning in there and they do provide enough illumination to see. They spot odd, lanky figures moving about in the courtyard. They seem to resemble trolls. The elves can also make out figures moving on the battlements, but cannot make out what they are at this range.
The fliers get a better picture of what is going on. They can make out that there are several dozen beings on the rooftops of two different races. The largest group is composed of orangish-skinned humanoids. They have flat faces, broad noses, pointed ears, wide mouths, and small, sharp fangs. The creatures stand about 4' tall. They are recognized as being goblins.
The smaller group is comprised of man-sized beings that resemble primitive humans. They have green-gray skin covered with coarse hair. They have a slightly stooped posture, a low jutting forehead, and pig-like snout instead of a nose. These second creatures are recognized as being orcs.
The flyers estimate that there are about thirty or so orcs and goblins. The majority of the creatures are looking down into the courtyard. They are laughing in their odd guttal languages and seem to be urging something on down there or cheering. They are paying little attention to what is going on outside the walls of Corunglain.
The flyers pass over the gatehouse and are able to see what is going on down inside the courtyard. Several small fires burn to provide illumination. There were three catapults here, but they've been burned to the ground. There is a pike wall that surrounds the exit from the main gatehouse, but the roads are unimpeded.
Down in this area the flyers can see four trolls tearing into a small group of people. Only two of the people are still alive out of what once was a larger group. Two of the trolls stalk the last two standing, while the others munch on the bodies of others. It is a gruesome sight and blood covers the area. A few of the bodies have been impaled on the pike wall and are in various states of being consumed.

GM Notes
GM Notes:
The riders are faster than the fliers and will reach the Vesubian Bridge first, but the flyers can cross without having to sneak. A more in-depth description of the Vesubian Bridge can be accessed from the reference page.
With the baby being born, I wasn't sure if the main group was going to move out with the refugees as planned. Therefore, Argent has not cast Wall of Fog just yet.
The flyers are in the neighborhood of two hundred feet overhead to avoid detection. The scouts are about halfway across the bridge and have only a limited view of what is going on. They'll be able to slip back to the main group and report what is going on with ease.
Going to carry on as planned and leave Bella behind, or wait for the child to be born?
Hit Points:
Acerion - 44 of 46
Grondar - 47 of 52
Havoc - 22 of 24
Now what?

Lord Validar -
Validar is pleased to see the baby begin to be born. At least the event is in motion and we are not paralyzed by waiting.
While the clerics do their tasks to assist the birth, the scouts return with a brief description of the area. "The trolls are an unwelcome addition, but should not greatly impact our attack. Perhaps delay it at best."
As Validar considers his final thoughts, he will ride over to Ivy and ask, "Ivy of Azrella, what, or rather who do you need to complete your task there? The time for attack must be now and we are moving out. You will have to follow as soon as mother and child are able to."
To the entire group, he will say, "The Wall of Fog should give everyone enough approach time and once our assault begins, especially from the flyers, the humanoids attention will be drawn to us and not any further approach. The archers should try to clear the outer battlements as best they can and then move in behind us as quickly as possible. There are many towers to clear in the Corunglain gatehouses and our numbers are minimal at best. Each of us will have much to accomplish this night. I am sure that each of you will do your very best."

Ivy:
"I do not believe that one act of mercy will change any of their points of view from a lifetime of savagery. It is as the others have said. If they are released, they will simply rejoin their comrades and continue the assault. As distasteful as their deaths are, I will rest easier that no more innocent blood will be on their hands. If these creatures were truly interested in a better way of life, they would not be here."
"Were these creatures human, they would have also been put to death for their crimes. Those nobles among us have the power and authority to administer the King's Law as they see fit. These creatures are not being treated any better, nor any worse than if they were human. They are being put to death for what they have done, not who they are. Deeds speak louder than words. Their crimes are clear for all to see, as can the screams of their victims be heard."
"Wait, Lord Validar! That's not what I meant! I meant moving them after the baby is born, not before!"
Alas, it is too late and Validar is already gone on his task. However, events take yet another turn..
"As priests we do strive to maintain a higher moral standard as decreed by our god. You use the words 'good' and 'evil' as if they are tangible and definable things. They are simply points of view according to how each individual sees the world around them. Have you not considered that what we consider to be evil from these creatures, they think is good and natural to them? That it is we, in their eyes, who are the evil ones who must be obliterated? What is considered good varies from individual to individual and from race to race.Grondar wrote:"What exactly is it that makes them evil, Ivy? I would suggest that it is their savagery and their disregard for the lives of others. How then are we any better than they if we butcher them as blood-thirstily as they would us? Is not the point of being Good to set a higher moral standard than they - to show that there is a better way? Wholesale slaughter of these primitive humanoids - turning this place into an abattoir - brings our gods no glory."

"I do not know for sure," Ivy will admit. "However, I would suspect that one must be a follower of Azrella to make full use of the mace's powers."Grondar wrote:Ivy finds a miraculous means of spreading healing about a large group. "That is quite a wonder that you have performed here," Grondar says to the human priestess. "Such an ability may prove quite beneficial to us all. Can you do that with healing miracles invoked by myself and other priests?"
As Ivy helps Bella, she hears Lyonessa's soothing melody. Ivy can't help but sigh in relief and send the Songstress a smile if she can see her. Anything to help calm these people can only help.Lyonessa wrote:While Ivy helps the pregnant woman and the others talk of battle plans that don't seem to include her, Lyonessa sits down and begins to play a very soft melody.
Ivy welcomes Grondar's assistance with Bella. "Your assistance will make this much easier. Help prop the mother up and keep her calm. I'll tend to the baby."Grondar wrote:A cry is heard, and Ivy informs them that a baby will soon be born. Grondar smiles happily and moves to assist Ivy in caring for the mother. While he has not her experience in such matters, Grondar has been properly trained, and delights in the wonder that is childbirth. He will provide Ivy with any supplies or help that she needs.
Validar wrote:"We have no choice but to move them immediately. They'll both need a safe and warm environment. We'll need a litter to move Bella as she's in no condition to move quickly. She'll have to be carried. I can carry the baby."
"I like the sounds of that, Ivy of Azrella." Lord Validar will stand with a flourish. "Make ready everyone! We are moving out immediately!"
"Wait, Lord Validar! That's not what I meant! I meant moving them after the baby is born, not before!"
Alas, it is too late and Validar is already gone on his task. However, events take yet another turn..
"The baby is coming!" Ivy calls out. "This will be over with soon."However, before she can be placed on it Bella's baby begins to emerge from the womb. The child is being born now!
Not looking away from her task, Ivy will answer. "Once the birth is complete we'll be able to move the mother. I'll need Grondar's assistance to complete the birth and he can help Bella along. Perhaps young Po can help too. We'll be along as soon as possible. Oh, a dagger! I'll need a dagger too!"As Validar considers his final thoughts, he will ride over to Ivy and ask, "Ivy of Azrella, what, or rather who do you need to complete your task there? The time for attack must be now and we are moving out. You will have to follow as soon as mother and child are able to."
For the glory of the Blue Lady!
Lord Validar -
Lord Validar is not certain that he agrees with the explanation given by Ivy about good and evil being merely frames of reference and points of view, but he does agree with the rest of her comments.
He nods in agreement as Ivy speaks of wasted mercy and the King's Law.

"You have what you require. Po, you will assist Ivy and Grondar here in the birthing of this babe. When you are all able, join up with us in the gatehouse. We will need all of you when you are able." Validar is certain that there will be many injuries to tend to, but with the number of healers they have and the fact that Lord Corley and himself both have means of self-healing that we should be able to battle hard without casualties.
Validar will approach Lyonessa. "With Grondar helping the refugees, I need you to take his place with Lord Corley and myself." He will offer the flask of Fire Breathing from Chareos. "Ride with us into the gatehouse and help us take out those trolls."
"Our task is to take the entire gatehouse, so it is important for everyone to work together, to support each other and to take them apart one piece at a time. Fortunately, we have the advantage of striking from two directions at once and can catch them between us in a pincer move."
Validar approaches Orin. "You lead these folk here and your actions helped to save them. I need you to lead them again back into the gatehouse once we reclaim it. Three of our number are absorbed with the birth of the baby and we cannot spare anymore as direct protection. However, between the fog and our own attacks you should come under no direct danger. You may use one of our horses and we have a few extra for those that may need them. Do you understand what I ask of you?"
Validar takes one last look at everyone there and then raises his sword in the air. "May you all fight with honor and pride and every last ounce of strength within you. We fight for the defense of the realm. Let us ride!"
Lord Validar is not certain that he agrees with the explanation given by Ivy about good and evil being merely frames of reference and points of view, but he does agree with the rest of her comments.
He nods in agreement as Ivy speaks of wasted mercy and the King's Law.

Conquer or Die!
Lyonessa:
After the initial round of healing and wound tending, Lyonessa begins to play a soft melody to lighten the spirits of those around her. There are only a few children gathered at first, but more quickly circle the Songstress. Their cries begin to fade as they are lost in the enchanting melody. Many of the adults stand with their children. The loud din begins to fade.
As Ivy helps Bella, she hears Lyonessa's soothing melody. Ivy can't help but sigh in relief and send the Songstress a smile if she can see her. Anything to help calm these people can only help.
Lyonessa continues with her melody, grateful that it has the desired effect. Soon, she finds herself surrounded by an audience who drink in her soothing words and notes, and that brings warmth to her heart. There seems to be no more time to do anything further for these people however, as Validar approaches her with a tall order.
Validar will approach Lyonessa. "With Grondar helping the refugees, I need you to take his place with Lord Corley and myself." He will offer the flask of Fire Breathing from Chareos. "Ride with us into the gatehouse and help us take out those trolls."
"More trolls," she says. why in Mystra's good name does it always seem to be trolls? She looks a little uncertain at first, but knows she is needed to replace Grondar. Lyonessa will set herself and take the offered flask before getting to her horse. "I shall be there in a moment, Validar."
As she rides to catch up to the lords Validar and Corley, she will pause to show a smile to the gathered refugees. She will show them she has no fear as she is about to ride into the mouth of danger in hopes to keep their spirits up after she departs.

He soon mounts up and urges his mount forward toward the besieged city. As the elves ride closer to the gates the blaze becomes more apparent as do the figures moving within the city. Squinting to try to make out as much detail as he can, his work is soon done and he rides back towards the others.
After telling Validar of what was seen, he listens to the intentions of Validar. He soon learns that three of their number will not be following them right away, for the child will not wait. Lyonessa is soon asked to fill the place of Grondar 'til relieved.

The words seem hesitant to the elf and the look of uncertainty that is etched on her features soon confirms his suspicions. He will approach Lyonessa, "I know what is asked of you is a great burden, one which you may or may not be used to. But you will not face it alone.” Adding an easy smile, “I will do my best to protect you and the others with my bow while you accomplish your task.”

Acerion:
Acerion escorts Chareos over to his Pegasus. The winged mount will look over Chareos and snort in his direction. The Pegasus seems to be indifferent towards Chareos and will allow him to ride along with Acerion.
Once airborne, Acerion can feel that the combined weight is slowing the winged steed down. It is a strain, but one that it can endure for a short flight.
"Much is asked for all of us this day," Acerion will tell his pegasus reassuredly. "Thank you for allowing Chareos to accompany us on this task set before us."
Acerion knows that the pegasus will not be able to carry both of them for long and so directs the flight to get some information about the forces contained within. The situation unfolds as he suspected and the occupying force looks large but lax. Initial surprise should be theirs easily enough.
If Validar and the others don't begin their ride soon, Acerion will have to land, even if briefly, to allow his pegasus to rest a bit. If that proves to be the case, he will choose a good place where he can easily see the riders as they approach and yet be out of range of any enemy eyes that might spot them. Otherwise, he will direct the pegasus' flight towards their target once everyone is in place.

round 2...
Sherra:
Before Sherra heads out for the coming attack, she finds Grondar. In between the hectic moments of an expectant birth, she will put her hand on his shoulder and tell him in dwarvish, "I will see you soon, my friend."
The elves outdistance her while scouting and their superior sight allows them to begin picking out details a bit before her keen vision (for a human!) can hope to spot things. Soon enough they provide ample information to allow for everyone to begin the attack. Sherra will move up to a suitable area stealthfully and use her Armor of Blending to allow her to be nearly invisible. Once she is in a position where she can do the most damage, she will wait, her fingers lightly holding the first of many arrows her bow will be sending into the ranks of the enemy.

Chareos
As Acerion and himself approach the Pegasus it lets out a snort and merely looks indifferent toward him, while Chareos starts speaking softly, “I don’t like this anymore than you do, friend.”
As they mount up and begin to take off Chareos can’t help but notice the way the creature moves and soon he tastes his first flight.
“Under better circumstances this would be much more enjoyable,” he says as he holds on with his feet and free hand.
He soon notes several of the others moving into position. Though Validar and the others are not among them.
Taking the wand of lightning and placing it in his other hand he wipes the sweat from his left hand. He looks to Argent's direction in the hopes of seeing her cast the Wall of Fog. Once he sees the fog in place he will target the right tower with a forked bolt from his wand (being extremely careful not to hit the Pegasus’ wing)

Advancing on Corunglain
Grondar:
"Going back to what you said earlier, they don't see their actions as crimes. They are operating under the orders of their leaders. As Validar keeps saying, 'this is war', and they are following orders. They are invading our lands just as we invade theirs and various nations of our people have invaded each other all down through history. War is a function of agression, for war cannot happen if one nation or people do not seek to take the lands of another, and history is rife with war. Is it not the habit in war to take prisoners in war? It certainly is among most nations that I am aware of."
The pregnant woman among the refugees goes into hard labor; the child will be born very soon! Plans for transport on a litter prior to the birth are abandoned.
"And just because you make the decision, does not make it right. When it comes to questions of morality and ethics, as a priest I believe that I have more training in such areas than you. After all, that is our function as priests: to guide and teach others in the proper way to live and act. There are always options if one is willing to see them."Validar wrote:"Just because the decision is not one you agree with does not make it wrong. If the choice is to kill these monsters so that citizens of the Kingdom (human, dwarf, elf) will live, then I will make that choice EVERY time. My duty is not to them, but to my people."
Validar wrote:"Further, we are not rampaging in their lands, slaughtering their females and young and capturing and torturing any we do not kill. When we do, then you can equate our actions with theirs and begin to ask if we are acting evil. Until then, the defense of our lands and our people will be completed with every means at our disposal. If that is what you deem 'expedient', then so be it."
"Exactly," Grondar replies to Ivy before turning back to Validar. "If I am not mistaken, and I don't believe that I am, we raid into the lands that they think of as theirs as well, slaying their women, children and elderly in the process. Does that then make us evil as well? Many attrocities are commited on both sides under the banner of 'This is war'."Ivy wrote:"As priests we do strive to maintain a higher moral standard as decreed by our god. What is considered good varies from individual to individual and from race to race.
"It was not my thought or intention to change or 'convert' any of them. My intention is to show and teach our own people that there is a better way than to match savagery with savagery. Is that not our function as priests? I know that I did not join the priesthood just so that I could use my deities' spells to assist in slaughter. I understand and support Azrella's crusade against the unnatural undead, but I don't believe that we can treat living mortal beings in the same manner."Ivy wrote:"I do not believe that one act of mercy will change any of their points of view from a lifetime of savagery. It is as the others have said. If they are released, they will simply rejoin their comrades and continue the assault. As distasteful as their deaths are, I will rest easier that no more innocent blood will be on their hands. If these creatures were truly interested in a better way of life, they would not be here."
"Yes, they have the power and authority. But they also have a moral obligation to temper their judgements with mercy, and providing counsel in these matters is part of our job.Ivy wrote:"Were these creatures human, they would have also been put to death for their crimes.
"I hear the pain and anger in your words, Laucian. You have undoubtly suffered greatly at their hands at some point in your life. However, I do not believe that the Guardians of the Light - as we have chosen to call ourselves - should allow our decisions to be determined by personal vendettas. By taking such a name, we claim to stand for something better, and I believe that we should strive to do so."Laucian wrote:“The likes of their kind have butchered, raped and pillaged these lands for as long as I can remember.
"Yes, I was and am entirely committed to stopping them. However, I remain opposed to the vengeful slaughter of a cowed and surrendering opponent."Laucian wrote:“I recall hearing your voice over the battle speaking that they would never terrorize these people again. And you were right. They will never terrorize another living creature again whether it be human, elf, dwarf or any woodland creature.
The pregnant woman among the refugees goes into hard labor; the child will be born very soon! Plans for transport on a litter prior to the birth are abandoned.
As plans are made and the others move out, Grondar remains behind to help Ivy with the birth and the mother.Ivy wrote:Ivy welcomes Grondar's assistance with Bella. "Your assistance will make this much easier. Help prop the mother up and keep her calm. I'll tend to the baby."
"Wait, Lord Validar! That's not what I meant! I meant moving them after the baby is born, not before!"
Alas, it is too late and Validar is already gone on his task. However, events take yet another turn..
"The baby is coming!" Ivy calls out. "This will be over with soon."
Not looking away from her task, Ivy will answer. "Once the birth is complete we'll be able to move the mother. I'll need Grondar's assistance to complete the birth and he can help Bella along. Perhaps young Po can help too. We'll be along as soon as possible. Oh, a dagger! I'll need a dagger too!"
Grondar smiles up at his human friend from his position supporting the soon-to-be-mother in her birthing position. "Indeed. We shall meet again soon." Grondar has no doubt that healing will be needed by those attacking the castle and intends to rejoin the others as soon as the baby is born and Ivy is able to handle the mother and baby herself.Sherra wrote:Before Sherra heads out for the coming attack, she finds Grondar. Argent
Argent:
Once we are ready to move out, Argent invokes a series of spells. First she casts Strength to amplify her own, admittedly, feeble strength to something better. The spell's duration is in hours and if it comes down to hand to hand combat, it'll help her out immensely.
Next is her standard Fly spell and it should last about two hours. Next is a spell that she really wanted to try out: Halo of Eyes. Upon the completion of the spell, a circle of eyes appears above her head. These magical eyes not only permit vision in all directions, but also allow her to see Infravisionally!
Lastly, a Shield spell. Mainly its there to protect her from any enemy Magic Missiles.
Then we're off as the Pegasus carrying Acerion and Chareos takes flight. Argent keeps pace with the winged steed. Soon we're at the Gatehouse and can see what is going on.
Regardless of what does happen, Argent will cast Wall of Fog from Sherra's scroll. She'll make the fog form upwards to cover the Gatehouse and block sight out onto the bridge. Create a 20' high, 40' wide Wall of Fog about 10' above the ground in front of the Gatehouse. That should block the sight of those there.

Bile rises up Argent's throat as she sees the horror unfolding before here. She'll whisper to Acerion and Chareos, "Should we not try to save those people? I'd Fireball'm, if those people weren't there!"Down in this area the flyers can see four trolls tearing into a small group of people. Only two of the people are still alive out of what once was a larger group. Two of the trolls stalk the last two standing, while the others munch on the bodies of others. It is a gruesome sight and blood covers the area. A few of the bodies have been impaled on the pike wall and are in various states of being consumed.

Corley
Corley:
The battle is over before Lord Corley realizes it. All of the sudden, there is no more enemy. He'll hold his two-handed sword high and let out a battlecry of victory!
But alas it is a short-lived one as the plight of the refugees becomes the main focus. While not having the healing touch of the priests or the soothing words to comfort them, Corley will donate his blankets and extra clothes to the refugees so that they can be made more comfortable.
As he listens, Lord Validar outlines his plan to return to Corunglain and secure a safe haven there for the refugees. While unsure just how this task is going to be accomplished, the young noble cannot think of any better alternative.
"Fear not, Lady Lyonessa. Stay behind Lord Validar and myself and we'll deal with the foul creatures! I will not allow them to harm you."
Once we are ready to ride, Lord Corley will spur Destrier on as we ride hard to the Vesubian Gate and the challenge that awaits us! If the opportunity presents itself, Lord Corley will lance any enemy that gets in his way or run over them with Destrier at the very least. He will use his lance against the trolls should it seem feasible before entering into hand to hand combat.
