New Frontiers #44

The battle on the road to Corunglain continues!

Lord Corley continues to attack the humanoids on foot with his two-handed sword. He is rushed by five hobgoblins who attempt to overpower the lone warrior. One of the five is slain by Corley's sword, and the other four are not powerful enough to overwhelm the young noble.

Ivy smashes one of her hobgoblin foes with her mace. The creature drops to the ground and lies still. In retaliation, another hobgoblin stabs her with its spear, but again her Stoneskin saves her from harm. The Priestess of Azrella eludes the bugbears' attacks.

Lord Validar continues to ride amongst the horde. His longsword takes two more hobgoblins down. The throng around him tries to bring the noble down off his steed. Numerous hands grab at Havoc and Validar's legs. Havoc will have none of this and tramples one of the hobgoblins for his efforts.

Likewise, a small horde of hobgoblins attempts to overwhelm Lord Acerion by grabbing a hold of the paladin's arms and legs. One pays for their efforts with his life as the Axe of the Valorous neatly slices the goblinoid in two. The others are not powerful enough to bring Acerion down.

Arocken rides in firing his bow. The elf brings one hobgoblin down with his arrows.

Chareos rushes in and expels his Potion of Fiery Breath on the humanoids standing before Ivy. A cloud of fire washes over the small group of goblinoids, creating the awful smell of burnt humanoid flesh. Both bugbears menacing Ivy go down in flames, along with several other hobgoblins.

A bugbear on the edge of the fiery cloud is singed by Chareos' fiery spittle. Grondar rushes in and whacks him with Truth Giver, ending the beast's life.

Sherra and Laucian ride up firing their bows. Each archer puts down two hobgoblins.

Lyonessa greets a hobgoblin with a solid mace strike, dropping the enemy.

The tide of the battle has turned and the goblinoids' resolve is shaken by their rapidly dropping numbers and their inability to overwhelm any of the Guardians. Many, but not all, begin to retreat. A cheer goes up from the refugees.

"Not this day, foul humanoids!" Acerion calls out as the rush of the hobgoblin horde swirls around him in all the chaos that battle can bring. He feels hands clutching at his armor trying to find a hold and bring him to his knees or worse.

With power of faith, strength and magic, Acerion continues to swing his holy axe, barely noticing that it cleaves through one unfortunate hobgoblin. Even as many of the horde are beginning to regret attempting to match steel and nerve against him and his companions, the day is not yet won. Acerion will continue to swing his axe against any foe within its reach.

Laucian

Quickly moving forward he sees the hobgoblins move about Lyonessa. He quickly nocks an arrow, takes aim and fires, dropping a hobgoblin in turn. He quickly drops another with a well-placed arrow.

Soon some of the hobgoblins turn to flee as a shout of praise comes from the refugees. Knowing that the battle is still not decided he forgoes his bow and draws sword and dagger. Advancing to Lyonessa's (left) side he will proceed to attack the closest hobgoblin within sword reach.

Chareos

Chareos rushes in and expels his Potion of Fiery Breath on the humanoids standing before Ivy. A cloud of fire washes over the small group of goblinoids, creating the awful smell of burnt humanoid. Both bugbears menacing Ivy go down in flames, along with several other hobgoblins.

"Never to menace these good people again," he says more to himself than to those around him. As he watches the smoldering bodies fall to the ground, the horrid smell of burning flesh invades his senses, though he quickly pushes it to the back of his mind.

He readies his quarterstaff for battle and begins to go through the fluid motions he was taught by Sharadin. He will attack and parry the closest hobgoblin to him.

Grondar:

Truth Giver proves as powerful a weapon as Grondar believes it to be. With one powerful blow, the hideous creature before him is smashed to the ground.

Seeing that many of the attacking creatures are beginning to flee, Grondar races to cut them off. To his mind, they cannot be allowed to menace others. "<Your time of terrorizing others has come to an end!>" he shouts in Goblin. Grondar tries to herd them back toward his friends, much as a trained dog will herd sheep, whacking any with Truth Giver that seem reluctant.

Melee Tide...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Now surrounded by the guttural-voiced humanoids, Lord Validar swings his sword in vicious arcs, cutting down the hobgoblins that try to pull him down in vain. Their pitiful attacks draw neither mirth nor sarcasm from the young noble, rather it is simply a function that needs to be completed. This is war, pure and simple. Validar strives to take his opponents down as quickly as possible, forgoing any words at all.

Havoc contributes to the battle by crushing a hobgoblin beneath his hooves, as the battle rages all around. In moments however, Validar can feel the obvious tide turn in the beastal opponents as their resolve crashes and the press against him lessens slightly.

Satisfied that the Guardians are about to win this battle, Validar will continue to hack at his opponents and if possible strike at Bugbears if they present themselves. He will not pass up the opportunity to kill more Hobgoblins however, should that be all that is near him.

Sherra can not help but let a grin creep onto her face despite the grim reality of the battle that rages on. Her shots, along with the others, are dropping the hobgoblins in a quick and efficient manner. She notices now that the full weight of the group is attacking the hobgoblin horde, they no longer want to fight.

Not wishing any of the enemy to be given the chance to regroup, Sherra will ride out a little more to the right and begin firing upon targets that present themselves, regardless of whether or not they are in retreat.

Lyonessa:

The combat swirls around Lyonessa, and she barely can comprehend it or her role within it. It is almost overbearing to her senses as she tries to keep her wits about her and defend herself.

Lyonessa greets a hobgoblin with a solid mace strike, dropping the enemy.

It is as if a fog is lifted from the battlefield as she faces off and defeats her foe. This combat is not so different from the one in Rennydale, but the hobgoblins seem to swarm about and act in much less disciplined fashion than the mind-controlled troops they had faced earlier.

Finally she hears sounds and cries of her fellow companions and they seem to be all around her. This provides to settle her mind even further and she hefts her mace once more, preparing to swing at any hobgoblin that closes with her.

Argent

Argent:

The Invoker grins widely as her Magic Missiles sparkle in the night sky like diamonds. The intense study Argent has made with the Magic Missile spell has paid off handsomely. She can adjust the appearance of the missile, making her own spell stand out from others and even generate more of them than normally possible. The last wyvern learns this lesson painfully.

"A bit of overkill there," Argent thinks to herself as bolts and arrows fly through the night sky taking down the winged beast. "But better safe than sorry, I guess. I wonder if there are any useful spell components that come from wyverns?"

With the wyverns defeated, Argent urges her horse closer to the battle, but keeps a safe distance. Laucian rushes past her, firing arrows from his magical bow. From what she can see in the limited light, all of her companions are engaging the enemy and causing heavy losses.

From her vantage point, Argent can see the magical glow of Acerion's Battleaxe and Ivy's Mace. The Invoker had only heard tales of Holy Weapons before, but had never seen any in action. Acerion's Axe cleaves anything that gets in his way with tremendous power. It is an awe-inspiring sight.

For now, Argent will hold her position and her spells unless she deems someone in a life ending situation. The she'll cast Magic Missile to aid them.

Ivy:

Ivy holds her ground as the humanoid horde advances on her. She's never been in this kind of battle before and is more than a bit apprehensive as it begins. Quickly the enemy surrounds her and she finds a pair of the larger creatures attacking! The Kiss of Azrella strikes twice, but only wounds the two creatures.

To Ivy's surprise, several attacks just bounce off of her skin. Sherwood's Stoneskin spell must still be active! While that is most certainly a blessing, it is not a permanent one. She recalls how Chareos' protection eventually gave out and he was wounded in an earlier battle. It's now only a matter of time before this protection is gone and the weapons will strike flesh. Another hit is quickly taken, but Ivy downs one of the hobgoblins in return.

Suddenly, a wall of fire envelops Ivy's foes! Glancing to her right, Ivy can see Chareos breathing fire once more. In quick order, the enemy she had been fighting is down. Ivy waves her thanks to Chareos and then turns to see where she can help next. A strong voice is heard over the sound of battle.
"Not this day, foul humanoids!" Acerion calls out as the rush of the hobgoblin horde swirls around him in all the chaos that battle can bring. He feels hands clutching at his armor trying to find a hold and bring him to his knees or worse.
"Acerion!", Ivy cries out in horror as she sees the humanoids swarming around her beloved! Rushing forward, Ivy will lend her aid against the enemies attempting to overpower Lord Acerion!

Corley:

Behind the hobgoblin horde, Lord Corley continues to mount his assault. The enemy cannot survive more than a single hit from his greatsword and quickly go down. The next thing Corley knows, the hobgoblins attempt to swarm over him and overpower him with their superior numbers.

"Have at you!", Lord Corley calls out in defiance. "You'll not take down this Son of Cynalon, you curs!"

Corley will continue to fight until either the enemy is defeated or he is slain. I'm betting on the former!

Post Continued:

The will to battle for the humanoid horde is waning and many of their numbers break. However, the Guardians give no quarter and the combat continues!

Lord Validar rides among them on Havoc. His longsword takes down a hobgoblin and a bugbear. Havoc rumbles over another hobgoblin.

Laucian ditches his longbow and rushes to Lyonessa's side with longsword and dagger in hand. The sword slashes out once, slaying a hobgoblin and then the two weapons act in tandem taking out another. Lyonessa herself misses a hobgoblin with her mace.

Close by Ivy rushes to assist Lord Acerion. Acerion ends the life of another hobgoblin and brings down a bugbear with his second stroke. Ivy steps in and bashes two hobgoblins to the ground.

On the other side of the rapidly thinning humanoid horde, Lord Corley slays a bugbear and gets a hobgoblin as it rushes past.

Chareos wades into the battle with his quarterstaff. He swats two hobgoblins, sending them flying away with ease.

Behind the ranks, Sherra and Arocken continue to fire arrows. Three more hobgoblins go down from their efforts. Behind them, Argent watches with interest and quickly realizes that her magic will not be needed in this battle.

Grondar rushes out and around those who are retreating. A bugbear charges him, swinging its morning star. The Priest of Berronar is struck and retaliates with Truth Giver. There is a bone crushing crack and the beast goes down.

All of the sudden, the fighting is over. The few enemies that remain are either blinded from Lyonessa's earlier spell or cowed into submission.

Twelve hobgoblins and three bugbears are all that remain of the horde. As noted above, most are still blinded by Lyonessa's Glitterdust spell. It's easy to tell which ones as they still have sparkles about them, outlining their position.

Everyone's mounts are recovered easily enough.

Grondar:

The Guardians of the Light continue their struggle. While greatly outnumbered, their skill, courage and magical abilities stand them in good stead.

Racing to cut off the humanoids' retreat, Grondar encounters the savage bugbear leading the pack. It strikes him a glancing blow with a wicked-looking morningstar. Berronar's grace has protected him from serious injury, and does so again. While the damage is minimal, the pain is sufficient to cause the dwarven priest to bite his lip. Fortunately, the vicious creature has no such godly protection, and Grondar's retributory blow hammers it to the ground.

With their companions falling like rain in a storm, the humanoids' will to fight quickly dies. Noting the change, Grondar ceases attacking, but continues his vigilance in not allowing the creatures to escape.

"Lord Validar!" he shouts. "What shall we do with these craven creatures? I'm not inclined to slaughter them in cold blood, but we cannot simply release them to continue their rapacious ways. Perhaps we can bind them and leave them in the care of these fine folk until we are able to turn them over to the proper local authorities?"

Chareos gives a smile and nod in return. Looking back he parries a blow with his staff and swats a hobgoblin away from him, sending it into another of its kin. "One could get used to this," he thinks to himself as another hobgoblin goes down by his hand

Soon the resolve of the horde is broken, "
Lord Validar!" he shouts. "What shall we do with these craven creatures? I'm not inclined to slaughter them in cold blood, but we cannot simply release them to continue their rapacious ways. Perhaps we can bind them and leave them in the care of these fine folk until we are able to turn them over to the proper local authorities?" comes a shout from his right.
"Grondar, if you may not have noticed the city has been seiged. That would take some time to do. And I doubt these good people would care to handle them for that length of time. Perhaps we should merely bind them and leave them for the wyverns to find? After all they would not be so merciful with us," he shouts in return.

Chareos will defend himself until what decided is put into action.

The first engagement winds down...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

The Guardians success is clear as little remains of the attacking horde. Now is the moment to bring this skirmish to a close. Lord Validar will urge Havoc on and careen into the remaining humanoids slashing his sword at those remaining enemies whether they are fleeing or not. From his battles in the Keln Frontier, Validar knows that these creatures neither deserve nor require any quarter.

It is a moment however, before he hears Grondar's voice over the now fading sounds of combat as little of the enemy remains.

The noble pauses for a moment, as the words reach him. Incredulous, he stops for a moment in his attacks. Turning to Grondar, he finally replies. "Indeed, if they are left to their own devices, they will surely rejoin their ranks and continue the battle. Or they will attack and kill the citizens we rescued. These people are unprepared and unable to handle a task that perhaps soldiers may not be properly suited for and even if they were, I doubt there is a citizen here in Corunglain who would wish to leave their mortal enemies alive!" Validar is certain, that while slightly undesireable, there is only one choice when dealing with evil.

Chareos - "Grondar, if you may not have noticed the city has been seiged. That would take some time to do. And I doubt these good people would care to handle them for that length of time. Perhaps we should merely bind them and leave them for the wyverns to find? After all they would not be so merciful with us," he shouts in return.

Validar agrees to a point with the fighter-mage. "I am not in favor of allowing the monsters that roam about to do our dirty work for us. We have enough problems with what to do with the refugees without worrying about prisoners, anyway." Validar looks over to the group that escaped the city, comprised mostly of women and children, and shakes his head.

"Clerics and healers! See to the wounded," he says, indicating the refugee group, with his sword. "Get them ready to travel. We cannot leave them out here alone in the elements, unprotected and undefended. Neither can we concentrate solely on them, when the entire fortification is in danger of falling."

Once the healers have moved toward their task, Validar will lead the fighters in the group in the dirty task of dealing with the remaining humanoids that haven't run away. Unless any of them drop their weapons in obvious surrender, then they will strike them all down.

Validar will have Arocken and Po begin to collect weapons from the fallen humanoids to arm the refugees who are able and willing to defend themselves. He will then address his group. "Unless anyone has a better means to protect these fine citizens of the Kingdom, then they shall have to travel with us. We will attempt to secure the gatehouse that these people exited from and no doubt their pursuers did as well. There these people can be properly defended and we can continue our reinforcement of the city's defenses."

"By my recollections and standard estimates of attack and seige tactics, there were some 7500 people here, with a predominant number of them being soliders. That means in order to breach the heavily fortified defenses, we are likely seeing an attack on the order of 25,000 humanoids, and quite possibly more.

"How many area effect spells do our spellcasters have remaining at their disposal?", Validar will ask as well. "Each of them will be vital in our counter-attack."

Validar will also ask the refugees what they know about what happened to cause the attack and how the attack took form.

Arocken -

Being a mortal enemy of hobgoblins anyway, the elf Arocken does not pause in his shooting of arrows. Unless specifically stopped by someone, he will continue to drop the hobgoblins with arrows, an angry snarl etched on the elf's face.

Laucian

Stashing his bow within his quiver he advances to Lyonessa's side. Drawing sword and dagger he lets out with his blades; with one sword swipe a hobgoblin goes down as does another of its kin by a sword and dagger stroke.

Soon the humanoids begin to waver in their pursuits and begin to flee. Laucian will keep his blades ready for an attack that comes his way but speaks to the remaining Horde.

At hearing Validar and Grondar's conversation he can't help but side with Validar. There are not many alternatives to the humanoids fate. "They plague the land like vultures. It would not sadden me to see them wiped from the earth," he will add rather coldly." Let them decide."

Afterward he will begin seeing to some of the refugees.

Soon after Validar asks about spells.
"I have but a few that would be of use. Hold person, Call Lightning, Summon Insects; though for Call Lightning a storm needs to be near. Perhaps Command-Surrender spell as well for a strong opponent."

After the meeting Chareos will approach the refugees and ask, "When did the seige of the city begin?"

Sherra's smile remains in place as her arrows continue to find targets. Soon, however, only those under Lyonessa's spell or with broken morale are left. Sherra knows that the effects of both will wear off eventually and there will be fighting once more. A quick debate crops up about what to do with the remaining foes.

The words of Chareos and Validar ring with truth, and the elf Arocken seems unwilling to yield in his attacks. Sherra feels no remorse for striking down those that would slaughter the women and children refugees if they had caught them. She too will move to remove the remaining hobgoblins from the ranks of the living as efficiently as she can.

Acerion:

"Acerion!", Ivy cries out in horror as she sees the humanoids swarming around her beloved! Rushing forward, Ivy will lend her aid against the enemies attempting to overpower Lord Acerion!

At first, Acerion is uncertain whether Ivy is calling out to him because she is in mortal danger or because of his own situation. Soon enough, Ivy appears by his side and the question answers itself. Acerion is relieved that it was not the other because he would have been hard pressed to have been able to save her quickly.

Close by Ivy rushes to assist Lord Acerion. Acerion ends the life of another hobgoblin and brings down a bugbear with his second stroke. Ivy steps in and bashes two hobgoblins to the ground.

The bugbear that faces off against him is an impressive looking foe, but his holy axe makes short work of even this beast. Acerion catches Ivy's own attacks from the corner of his eye and is likewise impressed by her ability.

It appears the horde's back has been broken and only the cowering, the demoralized or those under the effects of magic remain. Acerion takes the moment to lower his axe and catch his breath, but he dares not remove his helm quite yet.

"Clerics and healers! See to the wounded," he says, indicating the refugee group, with his sword. "Get them ready to travel. We cannot leave them out here alone in the elements, unprotected and undefended. Neither can we concentrate solely on them, when the entire fortification is in danger of falling."

If any of the group's clerics approach him, Acerion will wave them away. "My wounds are not grevious and there may be others in more dire need than I," he will say.

Unless there is need for his own limited healing to be administered to the refugees, Acerion will wait until the fighters and others have finished off the remaining hobgoblins. While he will not strike down those who can no longer fight, he understands why Validar and the others must finish them off. He will stand vigilant in case any of the hobgoblins decide to fight to the end and will move in to assist if that situation arises.

Grondar listens to Chareos' suggestion. While he doesn't consider it optimal, it seems like an acceptable option. However, before he can reply, the conversation continues with input from several other members of the group.

The solution put forth by their leader, Lord Validar is to simply slaughter the remaining humanoids, which seems to meet with the agreement of other Guardians. Grondar shakes his head as he moves to follow Validar's order to assist the refugees. He cannot help but worry for their souls; are they in danger of becoming as bad as those they fight? It is a subject that needs to be discussed, but now is not the time.

The dwarven priest moves back to the refugees with whom he left his horse. "I am a priest of the Revered Mother, Berronar Truesilver, and would like to help. Is anyone in need of medical care?" He will provide healing - both magical and mundane - and spiritual counseling as needed.
Validar wrote:"How many area effect spells do our spellcasters have remaining at their disposal?", Validar will ask as well. "Each of them will be vital in our counter-attack."
Grondar ponders the question for a moment. "I have no miracles of the sort that you mean. I can still spread Berronar's blessings upon our own members via the miracle known as Prayer. Otherwise, those that I currently have access to only affect one or a few targets."

"Thank you Laucian," she will say to her companion with as much smile as she can muster given the situation. It proves to be a minor distraction that costs her a swing at her foe. Still, the situation is proving less dire with each passing second.

All of the sudden, the fighting is over. The few enemies that remain are either blinded from Lyonessa's earlier spell or cowed into submission.

Lyonessa is relieved that it is over, and will move to aid the refugees in mundane or magical means of healing as needed. She will not approach Acerion per his request, figuring by his comments and his own paladin healing he will be able to tend to himself if necessary.

"How many area effect spells do our spellcasters have remaining at their disposal?", Validar will ask as well. "Each of them will be vital in our counter-attack."

"I have no area-effects spells left Validar, but have several spells remaining that will affect single or small numbers of individuals like Blindness and Hold Person," Lyonessa responds. If she needs to convert spells to magical healing, she will use her least combat-effective spells first.

At hearing Validar and Grondar's conversation Laucian can't help but side with Validar. There are not many alternatives to the humanoids fate. "They plague the land like vultures. It would not sadden me to see them wiped from the earth," he will add rather coldly."

"Yes, they are a plague," Validar will reitterate. "They are not even human and they are pure evil. They would slaughter our defenseless citizens and had we any other choice, then perhaps we could avoid unpleasant answers to this situation. But we are obviously, albeit suddenly and unexpectedly, at war and I cannot sacrifice the future in the slightest way by not making hard decisions now."

Validar sees both Arocken and also Sherra continue their attacks against the hobgoblins affected by Lyonessa's spell and nods grimly. It is not to his liking to slaughter like a butcher, but in war sometimes we have to choose what is difficult, he thinks to himself.

Lord Validar will note the responses of the spellcasters. Unfortunately, they are woefully low on area effect spells. Their loss of mages has been a loss of offensive capabilities on a large scale. "We will use what we have to our best abilities. Chareos, we may use up that Wand of Lightning this day, but if so it will be in a truly glorious manner. I hope there is enough energy in that wand to help us carry the day, but if not, then we shall do so by strength of arms." There is not the slightest indication that the Baron's son has any doubt that they can win this fight despite the odds arrayed against them.

"Those without area effect spells, use your spells as best as you can and as best as you know. But do not waste them. This may indeed be a long night of battle and there are many engagements such as this one we just completed where simple skill of weapons can carry the skirmish. Our spells should be used where most effective and I fear that the healers may end up using all of their abilities as healing simply to carry us through this battle."

"It may also be prudent to collect as many arrows as we can salvage from here, or take from the hobgoblins. I have a feeling we will be needing them all."

Validar takes a moment to consider that the fair Lady Gabriella may still be in the besieged city. While his resolve would be no different if that were not the case, this battle may now be even more personal. The fact that he currently has no way of knowing tugs at him like a missing piece. Regardless the battle is about to continue!

Laucian

Laucian ditches his longbow and rushes to Lyonessa's side with longsword and dagger in hand. The sword slashes out once, slaying a hobgoblin and then the two weapons act in tandem taking out another. Lyonessa herself misses a hobgoblin with her mace.

"Thank you Laucian," she will say to her companion with as much smile as she can muster given the situation. It proves to be a minor distraction that costs her a swing at her foe. Still, the situation is proving less dire with each passing second.

"You're welcome. I would not wish to see you harmed, Lyonessa," he will say with an easy smile.

When Validar begins to lead the archers and fighters into the remaining humanoids Laucian will be among them. Unless they throw down their weapons in surrender he will cut them down.

Afterward he will move among the bodies of the fallen looking for arrows to disperse among his fellow archers and himself.

"I will use it well and with any luck during the latter parts of this battle. I neglected to mention I also have one draft left of my fire breathing potion which could prove useful. If you would wish to make use of it through another member of our group then by all means you are welcome to disperse it to whomever you deem fit."

Ivy:
Close by Ivy rushes to assist Lord Acerion. Acerion ends the life of another hobgoblin and brings down a bugbear with his second stroke. Ivy steps in and bashes two hobgoblins to the ground.
Ivy makes her way across the battlefield to assist Acerion. His Holy Weapon glows as it strikes down the enemy. While Ivy's own weapon is geared to the destruction of undead, it is more than powerful enough to take down hobgoblins. Seemingly as quick as the battle began, it is over with.

After making sure that Acerion is okay and saying that she is also unhurt, Ivy will move away. She overhears the dialogue between Grondar, Validar, Chareos, and Laucian that occurs.

"Normally I would be in agreement with you, friend Grondar, on the side of mercy. But I did see Lord Acerion's axe glow as it did engage the enemy. His weapon is constructed to counter evil. If noble Heironeous deems these creatures to be evil, then I will not question his divine wisdom. From what we can see Corunglain has been attacked. These people were fleeing for their lives while these creatures hunted them down like animals. My compassion goes out to these poor souls who have lost their homes and to those who have lost their lives. While I have vows that I must uphold, preventing these creatures from getting what they have earned is not among them."
"Clerics and healers! See to the wounded," Validar says, indicating the refugee group, with his sword. "Get them ready to travel. We cannot leave them out here alone in the elements, unprotected and undefended. Neither can we concentrate solely on them, when the entire fortification is in danger of falling."
Having said her piece, Ivy advances on the refugees and assists them. "Everyone who is hurt gather close to me! I am Ivy of Azrella and the touch of my goddess is available to those in pain!"

Once everyone is close enough, Ivy will try out another function of her Holy Weapon she has yet to try. She'll burn her Orison and convert it into a Cure Light Wounds spell. She'll cast this upon her mace, which in turn will blanket the immediate area with the healing magic.

"It was no mistake that my mace and Lord Acerion's Axe was given to us at this time," Ivy thinks to herself. "The gods foresaw what was to come and have given us the tools needed to counter this threat. Azrella be praised!"

After doing what she can for the refugees, Ivy will rejoin the others wondering what they plan to do next.
"I am unsure of this course of action, Lord Validar, but I cannot think of any better plan. These people need a place of safety and they shall find none out here on the plains. We are too far away from Rennydale. They would never make it on foot. I see no other recourse but to secure a safe place for them back in Corunglain itself."
"How many area effect spells do our spellcasters have remaining at their disposal?", Validar will ask as well. "Each of them will be vital in our counter-attack."
"While my magic does not cause harm, I do have some helpful spells, Lord Validar. I have Bless, Remove Fear, Entangle, Charm Person, Hold Person, Silence 15' Radius, and Dispel Magic available."

Argent:

The invoker watches on horseback as the fighting plays out before her. As the battle winds down, she rides closer but still stays a bit away. There is a grim look on her face as she can see the fires consuming Corunglain off in the distance. While the young sorceress has been involved in battle before, nothing has ever been on this scale. The group has ridden into a war.

Argent does not comment as the discussion of what to do with the remaining humanoids comes up. It's clear in her mind that if the situation was reversed there would not be any mercy either. Finally she'll speak up when Validar puts forth his plan.
Validar will then address his group.
"That's a brilliant idea, Lord Validar! Given the state of Corunglain, it is doubtful that the enemy will be expecting a counter-attack so soon. Even better, should we succeed, then we'd not only have shelter for the refugees but a place for we spellcasters to regain spells. While I can now conjure a magical dwelling much like Sherwood can, it is not large enough to house everyone here. Nor can I make it undetectable to the naked eye. It could be breached if we were attacked while inside."

"I do have one question. Should not someone be sent to Rennydale to appraise them of the situation here in Corunglain? So that they can send reinforcements?"
"How many area effect spells do our spellcasters have remaining at their disposal?", Validar will ask as well. "Each of them will be vital in our counter-attack."
"While I was not expecting combat on this scale, I am still well-stocked in large scale magic," Argent will say proudly. "Among my offensive spells I have Ice Storm, Fireball, Web, Agannazar's Scorcher, and three more Magic Missiles. I also have several defensive spells and magic to aid me including Fly."
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Corley:

Unaware that the enemy is broken, Lord Corley will continue to battle any goblinoid that comes his way until none are left. Once the battle is over, Corley will retrieve Destrier and his lance and ride up to Lord Validar.
"Aye, Lord Validar! As Sons of Cynalon it is our duty to protect these people and repel the scourge that has invaded Corunglain! The blood of our citizens has been spilled! I shall not rest until Corunglain has been liberated from these foul invaders! It is as we said, my friend. There shall be much glory and honor on our journey! The bards will sing of our exploits!"
"By my recollections and standard estimates of attack and siege tactics, there were some 7500 people here, with a predominant number of them being soldiers. That means in order to breach the heavily fortified defenses, we are likely seeing an attack on the order of 25,000 humanoids, and quite possibly more."
"I agree," Lord Corley will add. "We have to assume that the humanoids are in control of the city. It will be a battle every step of the way as we seek to reclaim it. But perhaps our presence will renew the vigor of those warriors already fighting within those walls, giving new strength to their weary limbs. Aye, our actions on this day will be the stuff of legends should we succeed or that of a great tragedy should we fail. Let us ride for victory!"

One skirmish down, many to come...

Lord Validar -

Chareos - "I will use it well and with any luck during the latter parts of this battle. I neglected to mention I also have one draft left of my fire breathing potion which could prove useful. If you would wish to make use of it through another member of our group then by all means you are welcome to disperse it to whomever you deem fit."

"That is a useful suggestion. You have not only your spells and the Wand of Lightning, but also your own fighting abilities. Even one 'breath weapon' will be useful in another's hands. Or mouth, as the case may be."

Validar considers for a moment. "I would think that Lyonessa or Ivy would be the ones to find this ability most useful or perhaps Sherra. I would plan to use this as a defensive counter-attack move, rather than strictly offensively since we have both Chareos and Argent's abilities and our archers for that. If any of you three have the desire, then please accept Chareos potion." Validar will offer it up for use by whomever chooses it.

Ivy - "I am unsure of this course of action, Lord Validar, but I cannot think of any better plan. These people need a place of safety and they shall find none out here on the plains. We are too far away from Rennydale. They would never make it on foot. I see no other recourse but to secure a safe place for them back in Corunglain itself."

While I can now conjure a magical dwelling much like Sherwood can, it is not large enough to house everyone here. Nor can I make it undetectable to the naked eye. It could be breached if we were attacked while inside."

"The plan is one that allows us to protect these people and still carry the fight to the city. We cannot abandon either. This will become an offensive assault from a defensive position."

Argent - "I do have one question. Should not someone be sent to Rennydale to appraise them of the situation here in Corunglain? So that they can send reinforcements?"

"The thought crossed my mind, but I do not think we have that luxury. We are a day's ride from Rennydale and if the humanoids are attacking here, we cannot be certain that there are not more roving bands seeking to capture escapees from Corunglain. One or two of us would not be as easy a fight against a large band of humanoids. Also we do not have the luxury of losing any of us, especially two or three. All of us will be necessary in this battle and the winning of Corunglain. Perhaps if we could rally some troops, we may have the chance to send some of them to warn Lord Cavius of the danger here."

Corley - "Aye, Lord Validar!

"Indeed my friend. The success of this battle will go a long way to stabilizing the Duchy and also give us momentum for continuing the attacks to repel these invaders from our lands completely, once and for all time!"

Argent - "While I was not expecting combat on this scale, I am still well-stocked in large scale magic," Argent will say proudly. "Among my offensive spells I have Ice Storm, Fireball, Web, Agannazar's Scorcher, and three more Magic Missiles. I also have several defensive spells and magic to aid me including Fly."

"Very good. I would suggest we use the fireball on enemy on the walls or better outside the city. Perhaps the same can be said of Ice Storm. I do not know the useage of this Scorcher spell you mention. As for Magic Missiles, our best use for them will be against any humanoid shamans or any other spell-casters that may be in their midst. Or else perhaps against some of the most powerful fighters in their ranks to quickly down dangerous opponents."

"This will not be a fight that endears itself to chivalry or to honor or mercy. We need to strike down the most dangerous targets as quickly and efficiently as possible and wear down the bulk of their troops with our skill at arms. We also need to stay together. Hold ranks to keep them from swarming and overwhelming any individuals. This is vital if we are to carry this day."

Ivy - "While my magic does not cause harm, I do have some helpful spells, Lord Validar. I have Bless, Remove Fear, Entangle, Charm Person, Hold Person, Silence 15' Radius, and Dispel Magic available."

"We may find uses for some of those spells and we may simply need all the healing we can get before this night is ended, Ivy of Azrella. My fondest wish is that not only will we be successful in our battle, but that all of us live to share the glory that comes from it. Each healing spell may be the one that saves a life."

Corley - "I agree," Lord Corley will add.

"Lord Corley is correct. We must assume the worst in regards to the city, but with hope, there is still time to have our counter-attack prove fruitful. Even holding one part of the city by morning will be a success and we will inflict huge casualties on these invaders. Let us not fail. We are the Guardians of the Light and on this night, the light of Cynalon needs our presence. Victory is the only option that each of us can accept."

"Once we are prepared, let us ride toward the battle. Laucian, Sherra and Arocken will proceed in the lead and hopefully get us a view of what is happening. We need to find the nearest gatehouse and first cleanse it and secure it."

Laucian listens to the conversation at hand between Argent and Validar.
"The plan is one that allows us to protect these people and still carry the fight to the city. We cannot abandon either. This will become an offensive assault from a defensive position."

After hearing what is heard Laucian can't help but make a suggestion.
"Perhaps a few of the refugees would be willing to help us in this matter. After they are armed they could ride out on the spare horses and raise the alarm to Rennydale," he will suggest.

Lord Validar -

After hearing what is heard Laucian can't help but make a suggestion.
"Perhaps a few of the refugees would be willing to help us in this matter. After they are armed they could ride out on the spare horses and raise the alarm to Rennydale," he will suggest.

The young noble will look again at the refugees: women, children and old men. "I think you expect more of them than you should, my elven friend. This group does not have enough able bodies to protect themselves on a day's ride and they are not prepared for the elements. It shall not be long before we take the gatehouse and then we can send some soldiers for reinforcements. If we were to send the refugees, we cannot be certain they will even safely arrive in Rennydale."

Validar is silent for a moment. "It is an unecessary risk. If we require the reinforcements to reach us, then this battle is already lost. It will take a minimum of two days for Rennydale's soldiers to arrive. In two days we will have either won this war or lost it. Rennydale's troops will only help us to drive off the remaining humanoids that might be lurking about and help to secure this city. Surely another hour or two will not turn the tide of the battle significantly."
