New Frontiers #40

Outside the Shrine:

Lyonessa steps up to Kieran.
"Are you alright?" she will ask in a tender voice. "I'm sorry that happened to you. We freed you as soon as we could."
Kieran will look quite weary. "I wasn't strong enough," he'll finally say. "Again I was controlled by these men!" After a long pause he'll add, "Thank you for rescuing me... again."

Many of the Guardians follow Elspeth into the Shrine, while others remain outside on guard. This includes Argent, Gwenith, Corley, Swanny, Lara, Kieran and Lyonessa. Sherra takes a position at the entrance to the Shrine, while Kharyna, Kylie, and Chareos observe inside the building.

Inside the Shrine:

Elspeth begins the ceremony by casting a spell. To those who understand such things, it appears nothing more than a Purify Water spell. Elspeth's body begins to glow slightly and the glow becomes brighter with each person who joins hands.

The glow extends to each as they join the Circle of Power. A nearly overwhelming feeling of goodness and innocence is felt from Elspeth. With each member who joins more feelings are felt.

Purity of spirit and more feelings of goodness are felt from Acerion and Ivy. Oddly enough, the light around Acerion shifts, seemingly at random, through the various colors of the rainbow. An intense hatred of undead is felt from Ivy.

The noble spirits of Sherwood, Jallarzi, and Validar are added to the mix, along with the compassion and protective nature of Grondar. A love of forests and things Elfin are added by Arocken, Laucian, and Lilia.

When the light has reached its peak, it's projected forth from Elspeth and strikes the black liquid. The liquid recoils from the light, trying to move away from it as if it was a living being. Having nowhere to go, the water can't help but be struck by the light.

The 'resolve' of the liquid increases and tendrils of black energy are snaking their way back up the light beam. When they finally reach Elspeth, the entire gathered Circle of Power is thrown into darkness...

Those watching from the outside have no idea what is going on within.

Proposals:

The darkness fades and you each hear a voice in your mind trying to tempt you. "I am not your enemy," the voice intones. It sounds neither male nor female, and is emotionless in tone. "Throw down the shackles of your false gods and join with me. All that your heart desires can be yours!"

In Elspeth's mind's eye, the image of the gentle healer being reunited with her parents appears. Her father is a tall and powerful warrior dressed in blue and silver wearing chain mail armor. Her mother is dressed as a sorceress and wields a staff. "At long last you can know who your parents are and be joined with them. All this can be yours if you serve me."

Lord Acerion sees the City of Ardelphia before him. Not as it is now, but rather as it once was. The streets are bustling with people carrying out their business. Ivy stands by his side. "That which was lost can be regained. It and more can be yours if you forsake your misplaced allegiance."

Ivy beholds her home village as it was before the undead attack. Instead of being an orphan, she grew up with her parents and her brothers and sisters. Together they lead a simple, but happy life. "The family that you lost can be regained. Things can be as they should have been."

Sherwood can see Darya before him as she was before her untimely passing. "I can give you back that which you truly desire. That which was your greatest failing can be made right. Your wound can finally be healed."

Lady Sallavarian finds herself in a large classroom inside a gigantic tower. "It is you who should be given the honor of directing the Tower of Magic, not your apprentice. She's not even a true Mystrian! Her bloodline is tainted!"

Lord Validar finds himself on an outdoor balcony. Down below, troops march in time. "Under your guidance, Cynalon will at last be united. Your rule will be the stuff of legends. Serve me and your name shall live forever!"

Grondar stands before an ornate altar at the front of a church. The pews are filled with beings of various races. "All beings should learn and follow your teachings. I can give you all the followers that you could ever want."

Laucian finds himself back in the forests of the Elfhold. He stands before the door to a vaguely familiar cottage. "I can reunite you with your parents. You will never have to know the pain of being separated from them."

Lastly, Lilia envisions herself in a vast library filled with tomes beyond number. "The magical might and books of wisdom that you crave can be yours for the taking. Just give yourself to me and I will make your dreams come true."

Counter-Offers:

Right after the strange voice speaks to each individual in the Circle of Power, another voice is heard and the accompanying visions change. "Do not succumb to the Dark One's prattling. His offers many appear desirable, but they are rotten to the core."

In Elspeth's eyes, the vision of her parents changes ever so subtly. Crystal begins to form around their bodies and each remains motionless. A female voice is heard and Elspeth knows that it is Azrella herself. "The Dark One only offered to reunite you with your true parents. He said nothing about freeing them from their prison. You will find your parents and free them when the time is right. This I promise you. Now rebuke the Dark One and his lies."

"Look closer my son", Lord Acerion hears in his mind. The voice is a strong and masculine one. Acerion knows that he hears the words of Heironeous himself. "See the true nature of what he offers."

Doing as he instructed, Lord Acerion can see that the people of Ardelphia all have blank expressions. Looking at Ivy he realizes that everyone here, even her, is under his complete control. They are little more than emotionless, mindless puppets.

"Is there any honor or justice in this foul dream? Do not forsake all that you have learned for this vile sending."

"Your life has not been an easy one, child", Ivy will hear in her mind knowing that is the words of the goddess Azrella. "But it has prepared you for the great task ahead. There are many undead that need to be defeated and you have the tools to carry this worthy task out."

"What he offers is just an illusion. There is no life here, only the echo of it. Reality can be harsh, but it is always preferable to fantasy. Your friends need your strength. I know you will not let them down."

Sherwood hears a soft and caring voice in his head. He knows from past experience that it is Mystra. "You are not to blame for Darya's fate, my son. You needlessly blame yourself for something beyond your control. Cherish the time you spent with her, but do not live the rest of your life missing her. Do not live in the past; plan for the future. You are needed."

"Do not listen to the Dark One, daughter", Mystra begins to tell Jallarzi.

"I have no intention of doing so, My Lady of Mysteries", Jallarzi quickly counters. "I know my place and I know my purpose. He cannot tempt me with the destiny of another. I find his attempt to do so clumsy and somewhat amusing. He must be desperate to stop us."

"I am pleased, Daughter," Mystra will respond.

"There is no honor in this," Lord Validar will hear in his head. The speaker is a man with a strong voice. "The legend of a man is his alone to forge. It cannot be handed to him in the blink of an eye. If you are to rule, if you are to lead, it will be because you have earned it by valor of arms, courage of heart, and unquestionable honor. Refuse the dishonorable plea of the Dark One."

"You cannot force beings to follow you, my son", a raspy female voice whispers to Grondar. He knows that he hears the words of Berronar Truesilver herself. "Those who want to follow your teachings will. Forcibly gaining followers is contrary to your beliefs. Teach those who will listen and carry out my tenets. I can ask no more from any of my followers."

"The fate of your parents was tragic," Ehlonna will mentally tell Laucian. "But without that loss, you never would have been taken in by my temple and raised in my teachings. The Dark One lies to you and only wishes to take away what you have worked so hard for. He cannot give you what you truly want. Do not fall for his deception else all forests shall end up as this dire swamp."

"Those who crave power are consumed by it," is said to Lilia in Elvish. The unseen speaker is male and has a harmonious voice. Lilia has no doubt that the speaker is the Father of all Elves, Corellon Larethian. "You might gain much by siding with the Dark One, but compared to all that you lost it is a hollow gift. No friends, no family, no one to care about you. See what your cravings for power will lead you to if you do not change your ways, blood of my blood."

Turning, Lilia notes her reflection in a nearby mirror. Instead of her soft elfin features, her skin has stretched tightly over her skull. Her eyes are gone and only reddish pinpricks of light remain. Lilia realizes that she has become a lich!

Those others inside the Shrine but not part of the Circle can only wonder what is going on inside there.

GM Notes:

So, which side are those in the circle going to choose?

The actions of Kharyna and Chareos were modified based on conversations that took place outside of the post as per their wishes.

The only magic Kharyna detected inside the Shrine were items belonging to other party members.

Now what?

Updated Hit Points:

Laucian

Placing his hands on the shoulders of those in front of him he closes his eyes for whatever may come. A strong feeling of goodness begins to flow through him and he feels the power of those within the circle. As the ritual starts to work its magic he is suddenly thrown into darkness.

Before him stands a cottage that he vaguely remembers in his deepest dreams. The smell of lilac catches his attention and he smiles as he remembers his mother and the way she would hold him and sing to him as a child.

A tear forms across his face as he hears a melancholy voice. Laucian finds himself back in the forests of the Elfhold. He stands before the door to a vaguely familiar cottage. "I can reunite you with your parents. You will never have to know the pain of being separated from them."

A warm voice begins to counter in his head, "The fate of your parents was tragic," Ehlonna will mentally tell Laucian. "But without that loss, you never would have been taken in by my temple and raised in my teachings. The Dark One lies to you and only wishes to take away what you have worked so hard for. He cannot give you what you want. Do not fall for his deception else all forests shall end up as this dire swamp."

"Ehlonna you have been a mother to me since the time I can remember guiding and nurturing. I will not stand by and watch idly as this monstrosity rips any more families and friends apart. He promises me my family. That I already have. I lost one mother but I have regained that and so much more by your teachings." As he says this he begins to feel his mother's necklace made by his father, become warm about his neck. "My family is always with me and I will be your voice, Ehlonna, with the last breath my body takes."

Laucian will reply back to the first dank voice, "Your words are as empty and vile as you yourself. Begone from my mind for my answer is No!!!"

"It is time you know the strength and will of the forests and its dwellers." Laucian will then ignore the Dark ones words and concentrate all the harder on completeing the ritiual.

That Old Black Magic

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:

The beginning of the ritual is of great interest to Grondar. Purify Water? An obvious choice in retrospect, he supposes. Still, he had expected something grander.

However, things soon turn curious. Elspeth glows like a small star as they all lend the best of themselves to the casting. Grondar can feel the love and beauty from within his companions and revels in the feeling. That energy flows through the spell into the water, which fights back like a living thing.

Black tendrils creep back up the light toward then. Grondar closes his eyes and begins to pray even as he is swallowed by the darkness.

The voice that appears in his mind is strangely pleasant, if emotionless. The words offer power and influence - two things he has never wanted. The images look pretty, but hollow.

Another voice is heard, one which Grondar recognises immediately: the Revered Mother. Grondar replies to her words with a chuckle. "Do not worry, Blessed Mother. I feel no temptation here. This has never been our way. While serving you is my heart's desire, I know that there are many worthy gods, and all of them deserve the veneration of their people. I would have others know of you, but not forsake those other deities which are your blessed friends and peers."

Grondar turns his attention to the first voice. "I do not desire what you offer. Look into my heart. I feel neither fear nor hatred toward you. Look, and see what you find there. I will show you love, such as only the Revered Mother can give."

Grondar opens his heart and mind to the other presence, trusting in Berronar to protect him.

Kylie:

Standing off to one side, Kylie observes the ritual as Elspeth begins. Not being a priest, she doesn't recognise the spell cast, but the energy released is quite impressive. She watches as the glow flows out and into the water, which seems to retreat at first.

Suddenly, the water strikes back! Ebon tendrils of energy flow back up the spell toward her friends. In moments, they are swallowed by the darkness! Jallarzi! Sherwood!

Spinning, Kylie spots Sherra in the doorway. "Sherra! Call the others in! We have to help them!"

Once everyone is inside, Kylie proposes a plan: They will link up hand-in-hand with one of the priests in the lead, then feel their way into the darkness in an attempt to locate their friends.

A futile attempt...

Post by Validar »

VALIDAR -

Validar watches as the ritual begins. He is not one who has placed much faith or stock in the deities that everyone worships. He agrees that there is a higher power than mere mortals, but it must also be higher than them as well.

Regardless, he joins the group to add his strength to the effort. He wishes to see this evil defeated, regardless of who is responsible for the actions and therefore to him, this is an alliance more than working as a supporter of Azrella and others.

Validar watches intently as the Black Water recoils and then springs forward as if in attack. Then the voice enters his mind and he sees a vision.

Lord Validar finds himself on an outdoor balcony. Down below, troops march in time. "Under your guidance, Cynalon will at last be united. Your rule will be the stuff of legends. Serve me and your name shall live forever!"

Validar is intrigued by the idea presented before him. He has big plans for himself, for Pyris and for Cynalon herself. A moment later, as he contemplates what is presented before him, another voice enters his head.

"Indeed you are correct. I am my own man and I do not need such assistance to forge my own rule, whatever that may become. A prize won too easily is eventually disdained or ignored and not given the proper respect."

"Your offer is grand, but empty and without satisfaction or honor. I refuse your offer and you. Get out of my mind!" Validar resists the voices in his head and tries to mentally drive them out. He steels himself physically as well as all his muscles tighten in response.

Chareos

Chareos watches as the group begins their ritual. As they do so his eyes scan the walls and pit itself. He watches as the water inside recoils then lunges towards his comrades and then there is darkness.

Having no idea what is going on he takes one step forward then halts as he hears Kylie's voice call out from the gloom.

"If we do as you say there may be the possibility of ruining the spell that Elspeth has cast. But I will not stand here and be idle as they may be in peril. If we do join our hands and search for them let us not just find them. Let us add our strength to theirs."

"Does anyone have a continual light spell? It may be of use to us.

Acerion:

Having closed his eyes to concentrate on giving Elspeth everything of himself that she needed, he was not aware of the black water seemingly recoiling and then counter-attacking until the voice in his head spoke to him and offered him a vision.

Lord Acerion sees the City of Ardelphia before him. Not as it is now, but rather as it once was. The streets are bustling with people carrying out their business. Ivy stands by his side. "That which was lost can be regained. It and more can be yours if you forsake your misplaced allegiance."

Acerion prepares an answer, but before he can even muster the thought, let alone the words, he hears the powerful words and wisdom of his patron deity.

"The only honor is the one I have just gained by your noble presence, Heironeous," Acerion will reply. "I believed the vision to be nothing more than what my friends and I would accomplish on our own. Definitely not something I would need such offered help with, and especially not with such consequences. Still I thank you for your offered truth which shines noble light on the foul deception. You need not worry about the decision of your faithful son this day Heironeous."

Acerion will answer the original voice next, "Your vision holds no power over me villian. I will accomplish what you tempt me with without such aid from the likes of you. The land would not be free if its people were still subject to such immoral control. That is not what I desire, and if you had looked deep enough, you would have known that. Begone from here as you are no longer welcome!"

Sherwood:

Thinking himself prepared for any contingency, Sherwood joins the circle and closes his eyes and concentrates. While unaware of the thoughts of others, Sherwood can feel the innate goodness in each of the circle. Such a diverse group has much to offer. The faith that he and Jallarzi had placed in them has not been misplaced.
Sherwood can see Darya before him as she was before her untimely passing. "I can give you back that which you truly desire. That which was your greatest failing can be made right. Your wound can finally be healed."
However, Sherwood was not prepared for that. Seeing his beloved Darya before him is stunning. Get Darya back? Be made whole once more? It is an almost overpowering temptation.
After hearing Mystra's soothing voice, Sherwood finally begins to breath once more, having forgotten to do so. "I know and understand, Grandmother. It's just not that easy to do. I know that the enemy cannot do what he promises without a horrible price no matter how much I wish it to be so."

Turning back to the enemy Sherwood will shout, "I will not give in to you! You do not offer hope, only pain and suffering. Go and darken us no more!"
I do what is necessary.

do not brave the darkness..

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:
Spinning, Kylie spots Sherra in the doorway. "Sherra! Call the others in! We have to help them!"
Sherra rushes in and sees, well she sees only darkness where her friends and companions once were. She stands there a moment, but not having witnessed what transpired, she is uncertain what to do. So she listens to Kylie's plan and what Chareos has to offer.

"Is it darkness or the black water that surrounds them?" Sherra asks. "If it is the black water, won't you risk yourself greatly by trying to walk through it? If it is merely darkness, then won't a continual light spell drive it back? Is there another way, a different spell, we could use to see if they were alright? You must excuse me, as I have no real training as a mage. Maybe they have a protective shell surrounding them inside and if we try to push through unprotected we'll end up like those we just finished fighting. Kieran has been through this before, does he recognize any of this?"

While waiting for possible answers, Sherra will say, "They have a powerful union in there with the strength of Sherwood, Validar, Jallarzi and Elspeth, let alone the others. If they are not strong enough, will we be? I for one have no desire to step into such darkness, especially if it is the black water. I made a vow to protect them from outside harm and that's what I will do. If they fail and become servants themselves, then I will ease the suffering to as many of them as I can with a well placed arrow before my life is ended. The forces of evil can not be allowed to have control over such power as our friends wield."

Sherra will turn, very solemnly, and go back to her guard post. Worry is evident on her face but it is clear she will not risk herself by entering the darkness. Instead, she puts her faith in her friends.

A dilemma ensues...

Post by Kharyna »

Kharyna -

Kharyna watches as the ritual begins. The light from the group drives into the Black Water and it fights back!

Kylie, Chareos and Sherra offer their opinions on the situation.

"I do have a Continual Light spell at hand," Kharyna will offer, brandishing her Staff of Power. "Although I am not certain that would be of much use."

"I am afraid that Sherra may be correct. If it is the manifestation of the Black Water that has engulfed them, then it is not mere lack of light. In which case, we are not prepared to stand against it by diving in to the middle of the battle. Unfortunately, I am arrayed more for battle than anything else in my spell selections."

Kharyna watches silently for several moments as she contemplates the situation.

Sherra will turn, very solemnly, and go back to her guard post. Worry is evident on her face but it is clear she will not risk herself by entering the darkness. Instead, she puts her faith in her friends.

"I have to agree with her assessment of our friends, if not her solemnness. We should watch and wait for our friends to counter this attack. I am confident that they will defeat this menace."

Kharyna will back away and have her Staff of Power at the ready.

Ivy:

Ivy can't help but feel the presence of Elspeth and Acerion in this union. Their individual goodness is a powerful thing. Likewise the others in the circle are felt and in the process it changes her perception of some of them.
Ivy beholds her home village as it was before the undead attack. Instead of being an orphan, she grew up with her parents and her brothers and sisters. Together they lead a simple, but happy life. "The family that you lost can be regained. Things can be as they should have been."

Ivy barely has time to think when the Dark One makes his offer to buy Ivy off. Her will wavers as she sees her home village and family as they were. Then Mother Azrella is in her mind as well, giving her the strength to resist the temptation.

"I have never seen my home or my parents, so how could he know of them? It is as you said, Mother Azrella, only an illusion to tempt me with. I may not have grown up with my family, but I grew up happy and loved. I could not ask for much more. I will use the strength and abilities you have entrusted me with to throw back this vile darkness and to destroy all undead that may cross my path!"

Ivy will reject the darkness.

Lilia:

At first the Elf Maiden is intrigued as she watches Elspeth invoke her magic. The spell effect takes an unexpected turn as she begins to glow as if possessed with divine power. That thought does spark an intriguing notion, but the Elf Maiden does not get to pursue it any further as the darkness fights back.
Lastly, Lilia envisions herself in a vast library filled with tomes beyond number. "The magical might and books of wisdom that you crave can be yours for the taking. Just give yourself to me and I will make your dreams come true."
Lilia's eyes bulge in shock and awe from her vision. All the things that she's desired are right in front of her. All the things that she ever wanted just there for the taking. Perhaps this Dark God is only misunderstood?

Those thoughts are interrupted as she feels the divine presence of the Father of all Elves. Corellon's words cut through Lilia's soul unlike those of any other. In that moment she realizes just how wrong she has always been in the way that she handled herself and that her goals are not ones a true elf would pursue.

Then comes worst part, seeing herself as an undead sorceress! It is more than Lilia can take and she screams at the top of her lungs, "NO!!!"
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

"Is everyone else within that? Jallarzi, Sherwood, and Lord Validar?"

She does note with some surprise that Kharyna didn't join them, but makes no issue of it. Confused by what is going on, Argent just listens to the others speak.

"I do not either," Argent will say. "Like all of us here, my spells were selected for battle.
"I have to agree with Sherra here. We don't know what we're dealing with. In our attempt to help, we may only cause harm. Let's wait a moment and see what happens."
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Elspeth

Post by Elspeth »

Elspeth:

Gathering the strength of the others as Mother Azrella directed her to do, Elspeth turns it loose on the darkness. To her amazement, the darkness resists as if it were a living thing! It strikes back and fills her mind with strange visions.

Elspeth is stunned by what she sees. She has no knowledge of her parents, so cannot even be certain what she sees is even true. The blue and silver of the man who is supposed to be her father reminds her of the trappings of a follower of Heironeous. Was her father a priest of that noble god? Her mother appears to be a sorceress much like Jallarzi.
Another surprise follows when Elspeth sees that her parents are somehow imprisoned. But where? By who? The word of Azrella does sooth her anxiety.

"I believe you with all my heart and soul, Mother Azrella. You have given me hope that did not exist before. I thank you."

To the Dark One she'll say, "You seek to offer me something that I will gain in the future anyway. It is a poor bargain and one I will not accept. Away with you and your foul sendings, darkness!"
How can I help?

Lyonessa:

Lyonessa hears some commotion inside the shrine while she was outside trying to comfort Kieran. She will head inside confused, quickly replaced by concern, when she sees a big blob of darkness. There is a discussion going on about what to do, if anything.

Lyonessa will add, "I do not have any light spells either. The only thing that might be of use is my Message spell. However, since I can't see any of them it might not work even though I know we would easily be in range."

Lyonessa will have to see if anyone thinks she should try the spell anyway, otherwise she will wait it out as well to see what transpires next.

Post Continued:

The battle between good and evil continues inside the swamp shrine. Those who joined with Elspeth in a Circle of Power to combat the enemy have vanished inside darkness. Those standing guard wonder what they should do to help, if anything.

Unexpectedly, a glow comes over Kharyna's mace. She doesn't notice it at first, but the others present do. Surprised by this, she grasps the enchanted weapon and stares at it. Suddenly the mace moves of its own accord towards the darkness forcing Kharyna's hands to follow. Bluish-white energy leaps from the mace and strikes the field of darkness.

One by one, those inside the darkness reject the visions they are tempted with. As each does so, more magical energy is unleashed from them. From Ivy and Elspeth it is sky blue in color. From Jallarzi and Sherwood it is bluish-white. From Acerion and Validar it is dark blue mixed with silver. From the elves it is forest green in color. Lastly from Grondar it is the color of purest silver.

"Disease!", the Dark One shouts into their minds. "Vermin! Parasites! You shall be obliterated! Pestilence! Cancer!"

The darkness around the circle is dramatically blasted away from the combined energies. Those in the circle can feel themselves pushing the black liquid away. The liquid before them is vaporized out of existence.

The collective energy does not stop there. Those in the circle can feel it traveling back along the underground path to where it originated, destroying the liquid as it passes.

After traveling underground for a long time, the group emerges in an extremely cold chamber. A figure sheathed in darkness rests upon an alter. The collective energy envelops the chamber and the cracks in it are repaired. The Dark One's prison is sealed once more. In doing so, all those previously under his influence are freed wherever they may be.

The collective vision ends for those in the Circle and the backlash from the summoned energies sends each backwards to the ground.

Parting Words:

Those who were part of the circle hear a few brief words before the vision ends.

"Keep the woodlands safe, my son", Ehlonna will say as she departs from Laucian's mind. Magical energy will surround Laucian's longbow, altering its properties. "To better carry out this task, I have improved upon your longbow. It is now a Hunter's Bow."

"You have done me proud", Berronar will say to her follower. "As a reward for your faith, I shall transform your weapon into something grander." Silver energy surrounds Grondar's mace, transforming it into a Truesilver weapon. "I present you with Truth Giver. Use it well, my son."

"The scales are even, the debt repaid," will be heard by Validar. "Fight with honor in the name of justice."

"You have done me proud, my son," Heironeous tells Acerion. "To better carry out out your duties, I shall imbue some of my holy essence upon your weapon, making it a powerful weapon against our foes." Silver-blue energy surrounds Acerion's battleaxe, changing it into something much grander. "I give you a Holy Weapon, the Axe of the Valorous!"

"My heart fills with pride, Daughter", Azrella will tell Ivy. "You have carried out a great task this day and have earned a boon." Sky blue energy surrounds Ivy's mace, changing it into a powerful tool against evil. "I give you the Kiss of Azrella, a Holy Weapon to better destroy undead."

"You are back on the right path," the Father of All Elves tells Lilia. "Do not give in to prejudice and greed. To help you remember this lesson, I give you a gift." Once more magical energy appears. It surrounds her shortbow, altering its properties. "Your weapon is now a Manabow. Use it well and never forget this day."

"Come, Daughter", Azrella will say to Elspeth. "We have much to discuss."

No words are exchanged between Mystra and Sherwood and Jallarzi. But a feeling of warmth and love are felt towards them.

Afterwards:

From the point of view from outside the circle, the darkness was blasted away by the combined energies from within coupled with those of Kharyna's mace. Then those in the circle were thrown back a short distance to the ground. As you watch, strange energies of various colors formed around some of their weapons, transforming them.

Slowly, those who were in the circle come around. However, Elspeth remains unconscious.

As this is going on, a female voice is heard in everyone's head. Kharyna and Lyonessa will know it to be Mystra herself.

"You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. For now savor your victory and know that you have our thanks and gratitude. To this end, I shall grant you each a boon for your efforts."

GM Notes:

Congratulations on completing this quest that has been going since the game started! What you have accomplished is great and the rewards just as great!

Mystra's Boon works as follows. You have to choice to do either one of two things.

1 - You may raise any Primary Stat by 1. You may exceed racial maximums by doing so. Each Sub-Stat will also correspondingly increase by one.

2 - Or you may spend 10 more Character Points to your Class Write Up.

The Choice is yours!

Here's what the special weapons given above do:

Hunter's Bow: Longbow +3, all ranges increased by a factor of 1.5

Truth Giver: Mace +4, can Detect Lie 3x/Day for 1 round per wielder level.

Axe of the Valorous: Holy Weapon of Heironeous. Battleaxe +5, +10 vs. Lawful Evil. 50% Magic Resistance when wielded. Wielder can instill Courage 3x/day in those within 20' of him. (This gives a +2 to hit, +2 to damage, and +2 to Morale bonus to those affected.) Axe will provide illumination for 30' upon command.

Kiss of Azrella: Holy Weapon of Azrella. Mace +5, +10 vs. Undead. Undead who are struck may save vs. Spells or be destroyed. Wielder is able to make use of the 'Kiss of Azrella'. Any Cure spell cast upon the mace will be transformed as follows. The spell will affect all within 20' of the mace, so a Cure Light Wounds spell will affect everyone within 20' instead of just one individual. Furthermore, any undead within the area of effect will take damage equal to the healing value of the Cure spell. The mace will also provide light in a 30' radius upon command.

Manabow: Shortbow +3, the bow magically generates arrows, so no ammunition is required.

With the completion of the current mission, you've reached a crossroads. Some of you have different paths to follow than others. Lots to decide and talk about.

The XP table has been updated and many levels were gained.

Updated Hit Points:

Acerion - 36 of 46
Gwenith - 29 of 30
Swanny - 28 of 73
Validar - 32 of 76

Now what?

The end of this Evil...

Post by Kharyna »

KHARYNA -

Noting movement of the others in front of the Shrine, Argent flies closer to investigate. Seeing them go inside, the Invoker joins them. What she sees shocks her!

"Is everyone else within that? Jallarzi, Sherwood, and Lord Validar?"

"Yes," Kharyna will respond. "They seem to have been counter-attacked by the Black Water."

"I have to agree with Sherra here. We don't know what we're dealing with. In our attempt to help, we may only cause harm. Let's wait a moment and see what happens."

"That is why I did not join them. In case we can help. But without knowing what is going on, how can we help them for certain?"

"I am not sure it would work," Kharyna considers for a moment. "My understanding is that there needs to be an unobstructed path to the receivers. My guess is that would count as an obstruction," she says pointing at the black blob.

About then, someone points out that Kharyna's mace is glowing. She grasps the weapon's shaft and looks closely at it. It seems to have a bluish tint to it and Kharyna realizes that Mystra's presence is here.

Suddenly the mace moves of its own accord towards the darkness forcing Kharyna's hands to follow. Bluish-white energy leaps from the mace and strikes the field of darkness.

At the same time combined energies in many colors erupts out from the black cocoon. Those in the circle are all thorwn back and to the ground. Some of the energy continues to play about various weapons. Kharyna watches as they transform before her eyes. "Many gods have been represented here and their power still lingers," Kharyna will say quietly.

"Thank you for your gift, My Lady of Mysteries. We have done what we were able and it was enough to re-imprison the Dark One. One day he shall have to be defeated in total and destroyed."

Kharyna will accept Mystra's Boon and increase her Intelligence by one point to 20.

"Now I believe that there was some talk of dismantling this loathesome place." However, she notices that Elspeth remains unconscious. Since Grondar and Ivy are still recovering from the battle, she will go to see to Elspeth.

Kylie:

Kylie is all for plunging into the darkness to save their companions, but it seems cooler heads will prevail. She pauses long enough to hear everyone's input, then notes the glow from Kharyna's mace as it moves toward the darkness seemingly of its own will. "Gods above!" she exclaims as a beam of light leaps forth from the mace to strike the darkness.

At almost the same time, bright energies emerge from the darkness and push it back, leaping out to smite the corrupted water. Energy pours into the water, which disappears, and continues to flow into the ground there.

Suddenly, something snaps and the energies dissipate, and those who had been within are flung roughly to the ground. New energies appear, swirling about the weapons of some of those on the ground, transforming them. Kylie watches all this fascinated, though not really understanding what is transpiring.
Mystra wrote:"You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. A voice appears inside Kylie's head. While she isn't certain, she suspects it may be that of Mystra herself! Kharyna's words seem to validate the impression.

"M-M-Mystra?" Kylie stammers, dropping to one knee. Though not a priest, she has long venerated Mystra, second only to Olidamara and Tymora. Neither of them has ever spoken to her before, however. "It is an honor to help you in whatever small way I can. Your gift is most gracious, and I will use it as best I can."

Grondar:

As he makes his decision, Berronar reaches through him to aid Elspeth in her efforts. The pure silver power of his patron joins the strength contributed by the others to stamp out the darkness. The Dark One screams of retaliation, but it sounds desperate, weak. Grondar stands firm beneath the assault.

They seem to travel through the ground to the very prison of the Dark One. He watches as the godly power heals the damage to the bindings placed on this ancient evil. Joy and hope sing in his heart, even as the spell ends and they are slapped back to their previous reality.
Berronar wrote:"You have done me proud", Berronar will say to her follower. "As a reward for your faith, I shall transform your weapon into something grander." Silver energy surrounds Grondar's mace, transforming it into a Truesilver weapon. "I present you with Truth Giver. Use it well, my son."
Grondar bows low before his patron. "It is my joy and honor to serve you, Revered Mother. Anything you ask of me I shall accomplish, or die trying." He pauses to look at his new weapon; it is truly beautiful. "This is a great blessing you have bestowed upon me. It shall ever be my companion and symbol of your goodness and purity. Thank you."

The vision fades, and Grondar begins to sense his true surroundings again. His body aches, but he know that will pass. Before he can even rise, another voice enters his head.
Mystra wrote:"You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. For now savor your victory and know that you have our thanks and gratitude. To this end, I shall grant you each a boon for your efforts."
While he doesn't know the human deities that well, something tells him that this is Mystra. "My lady, I am happy to have contributed to this great victory. Your words will be remembered and we will remain vigilant for the return of this evil power. Thank you for your Boon, my lady. I will endeavor to honor it with my actions."

As he becomes more aware and regains control of his body, Grondar will pause to examine his new weapon. Truth Giver. It is beautiful almost beyond words - a bright, gleaming silver that shines like a mirror in the sunlight.
Kharyna wrote:"Now I believe that there was some talk of dismantling this loathesome place." However, she notices that Elspeth remains unconscious. Since Grondar and Ivy are still recovering from the battle, she will go to see to Elspeth.
Words dimly heard slowly leak into Grondar's consciousness. Pausing a moment, he levers himself into a sitting position. "Indeed, lady Kharyna; we did speak of that. Give me a moment to recover, and I will join you in doing so."

When he gets a chance, Grondar will approach Swanny and offer her more healing. If she accepts, he'll start by Laying On Hands. Afterwards, he'll convert any remaining spells other than Strength of Stone and Dispel Magic to healing and use them on the warrior-woman as well.

VALIDAR -

As Validar mentally and physically strains against the Evil One who opposes them , he can suddenly feel the surge of power from his comrades as they join together to silence him.

"Disease!", the Dark One shouts into their minds. "Vermin! Parasites! You shall be obliterated! Pestilence! Cancer!"

But the mad rantings are as futile as the Dark One's misguided attempts to lure them to evil. The group's power drives the water back toward the source, destroying it as they go.

The group sees a collective vision of their results, the Dark one on his throne, the cracks in his prison sealed and the freeing of those influenced by the dire fluid.

Then, just as suddenly, the group is thrown back from the backlash of energy and Validar finds himself back in the shrine, laying on his back.

"The scales are even, the debt repaid," will be heard by Validar. "Fight with honor in the name of justice."

"Indeed I shall," Validar will reply. He considers for a moment and even though he does not follow any of these deities, he knows from experience and the obvious signs that his benefactor was Heironeous. He is not sure how he feels about that, but he is pleased that his actions have been greatly appreciated this day. "As I ever would." In the back of his mind, Validar is pleased that he is no longer under the debt of the one who raised him from the dead.

Validar notices the changes to various weapons as he sits up and removes his helm and as a man-at-arms, he is impressed. He will take the time later to ask specifically about the melee weapons and congratulate everyone on their new weapons.

As this is going on, a female voice is heard in everyone's head. "You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. For now savor your victory and know that you have our thanks and gratitude. To this end, I shall grant you each a boon for your efforts."

"We have done that which needed to be done," Validar will respond aloud. "Still we respectfully accept your gift." Without understanding how, Validar's mind is touched by the Lady of Mysteries and after a brief exchange, he feels another surge of power through his body, different from the one Heironeous provided, but strong nonetheless.

Validar will choose to take the Magic Resistance ability as his gift from Mystra. Seems both fitting and contrary at the same time.

Validar will stand and address the assembled group. "We have done well this day, my friends. The Kingdom is a safer and better place today due to our direct efforts. But there is much more good that needs to be accomplished. I know that many of you have other responsibilities to attend to now that this is completed, however, as before, I would be honored if each of you continued to ride with the Guardians of the Light. We have much to accomplish."

"In the meantime, I agree with Grondar's assessment that this place should be destroyed. There is no reason to leave it as a poor testament to the evil that was defeated here today. Better to remove all trace of it and allow the land to heal. To that end, I suggest that we encamp in this area, returning to Sherwood's Mansion and return to complete the task when rested and recovered. Then for those who do not have to leave immediately, we should return to Rennydale for a few days to recover and reflect on our accomplishments."

Ivy:

After refusing the darkness, Ivy can feel energy leaving her body. It bears the familiar feeling of belonging to Azrella herself, as if Ivy's body is just a conduit to carry out the Blue Lady's will. All at once the task is over and the Circle's purpose complete. Ivy is barely aware of hitting the ground back in the Shrine.
"You honor me, Mother Azrella. I only pray that I can repay the faith you have placed in me this day. I will cherish what you have given me and will make sure it is put to good use."

Just as Ivy begins to come around, another voice is heard in her mind. The voice is not familiar to her, but she figures that it is yet another power that has taken interest in the events that have occurred here.
"You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. For now savor your victory and know that you have our thanks and gratitude. To this end, I shall grant you each a boon for your efforts."
"You are most welcome," Ivy will say aloud still flat on her back.

Feeling tired, dirty, and sore Ivy will sit up. She can't help but appreciate the power of her altered mace and looks forward to her next encounter against undead to unleash its full power. But not even that can hold her attention long. Looking to her side, Ivy sees that Elspeth's eyes are still closed.

"Elspeth? Are you well?"

Forcing herself up, Ivy will move to examine her best friend. Kharyna beats her there.

"Is she going to be all right?", Ivy inquires of Kharyna.

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden is flung back with the others and hits the ground hard. She's aware of the Creator of Elves speaking to her and that he has altered her Shortbow. She's barely able to give her thanks before the voice fades.

Another voice is heard and it offers congratulations and another reward. Lilia can hear someone mention Mystra, so perhaps it was her. Weakly, Lilia gives thanks again.

Looking as if stunned by what has transpired, Lilia continues to lie on the ground, barely aware of what is happening around her.

Argent:
"Yes," Kharyna will respond. "They seem to have been counter-attacked by the Black Water."
"Incredible!", Argent will say in surprise. "And here I thought this was going to be the easy part."

Argent stares intently at the darkness, trying to decide what to do next. Suddenly, Kharyna's mace begins to glow and energy is emitted from it. It strikes the darkness and is joined by more energy from inside. In a flash, the darkness is gone and the ebony liquid quickly follows. The battle is seemingly over moments after that and those who were in the darkness are sent to the ground.

Rushing in, Argent will assist Jallarzi in getting back to her feet. "Are you all right, Jallarzi? Do you need a healer? What happened in there?"

A voice is than heard in Argent's mind that sort of answers those questions.
"You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. For now savor your victory and know that you have our thanks and gratitude. To this end, I shall grant you each a boon for your efforts."
Argent hears Kharyna addressing the voice as "My Lady of Mysteries", letting her conclude that the speaker was Mystra herself.

"You are most welcome, Lady of Mysteries", Argent will add. "Happy to help."

Validar will stand and address the assembled group. "We have done well this day, my friends. The Kingdom is a safer and better place today due to our direct efforts. Laucian

As the darkness begins to creep around him he begins to feel the combined efforts of those around him as the water before him is washed from this plane. Soon the visions that once were strong in his mind begin to fade as the prison is once more sealed on the Dark god. The backlash of there efforts causing him and the others to fall to the ground.

Apparently knocked unconcoius Laucian has a message from his patron, "Keep the woodlands safe, my son", Ehlonna will say as she departs from Laucian's mind. Magical energy will surround Laucian's longbow, altering its properties. "To better carry out this task, I have improved upon your longbow. It is now a Hunter's Bow."

A warm smile comes to his face as the sound of the voice reaches his ears. He replies back, "Until the end of my days so it shall be, My Lady. I will use it wisely and cherish it always."

Soon afterward a voice is heard in his head yet it is unfamiliar to him and it speaks, "You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. For now savor your victory and know that you have our thanks and gratitude. To this end, I shall grant you each a boon for your efforts."

He looks around to the others from the flat of his back, "Whom is this speaking?" and as his answer is quickly answered by Kharyna a look of embarassment crosses his face. " I had no idea it was you Lady of Mysteries, my deepest apologizes."

"Your words are very kind and I am honored to accept such a gift."
As the fogginess dissipates from Laucian's head he recalls the words of his beloved patron before the vision vanished and looks down at his bow. He looks it once over and notices a new etching above the grip. He smiles as he runs his hands across the engraving of the unicorn's head much like his symbol. He will say to no one in particular, rather more to himself, "Thank you mother, both of you."

He looks around to see the others are well. Soon though his sight falls on Elspeth whom still hasn't stirred. Before he can ask Kharyna and Ivy are by her side. He soon says a silent prayer for her well being.

"Here here!" as he raises his bow in agreement. " The honor is mine Validar, you are a fine man and leader. One of the few I have whom I'd call friend. Whatever lies ahead we shall do so together."

"I agree this place should not be left intact. And it would gladden my heart to see this swamp be resored to what it could be. Once we destroy this shrine, I am going to plant a few trees about the sight but before doing that I will bless the seeds. Any of those that wish to join me in this endevour are welcome."

Lyonessa:

"I am not sure it would work," Kharyna considers for a moment. "My understanding is that there needs to be an unobstructed path to the receivers. My guess is that would count as an obstruction," she says pointing at the black blob.

"That is what I feared as well if it is truly black water which surrounds them," Lyonessa will reply. "Mere darkness should not affect it however, but to test that will have to wait for another time."

Lyonessa watches in awe as Kharyna's mace begins to glow and move as if alive. It smashes into the shell of black water with wonderous results, seemingly coupled with something occuring within the shell. Those inside are ejected and knocked from their feet, and all seem unhurt except Elspeth.

"My many thanks to you, my lady, for the guidance you have shown me and for the praise and reward you grant us this day. I ever shall endeavor to do your will and spread word of your deeds and power through song and prayer," Lyonessa will say reverently.

Lyonessa listens to Validar and agrees with the assessment presented. She also begins to put thought into another ballad for the deeds done here this day. What Validar says next causes her to stop her thoughts momentarily.

"I still seek my sister, and it is with renewed hope that even if she was not in command of her own will that she has now been freed. I will continue with the Guardians at least until I have found my sister," Lyonessa will say, looking over at Kieran to reassure him that she will not give up that path. "Beyond that, I can not yet say."

"I agree this place should not be left intact. And it would gladden my heart to see this swamp be resored to what it could be. Once we destroy this shrine, I am going to plant a few trees about the sight but before doing that I will bless the seeds. Any of those that wish to join me in this endevour are welcome."

Lyonessa will approach Laucian, "I would like to join you in that task if I may. It is a noble gesture that should go far in healing the land even after we have left here."

Acerion:

Acerion continues to concentrate, even when it becomes clear that we have been victorious in the task of cleansing the water. When it is shown to him the resting place, or better put - prison, of the dark god, Acerion wishes there was a more, permanent solution they were able to do this day. In the end though, success is theirs and the vision ends, although somewhat violently.

Picking himself up, Acerion hefts his axe and gazes upon it. It is indeed a marvel to look at, and the paladin is overcome with emotion from the bestowed honor. Falling to one knee and bowing his head, he proclaims, "It has always been my honor to serve you, Heironeous, and it is you who fills me with pride at your recognition of my, and the others, deeds here today. May my future deeds shine as brightly as the gift you have bestowed upon me this day."

Acerion is not alone in his thoughts for long, for soon a female voice can be heard. It takes some figuring out, but he puts together what some of the others say out loud and believes it to be the voice of Mystra. She too appears to be offering a boon for their deeds this day. Acerion will bow his head in reply, "Thank you, Lady of Mysteries, your words alone would have been welcome thanks enough for our deeds. I shall choose wisely upon this boon you are granting. Fear not either, for whenever this foul evil believes it is safe enough to resurface, I shall be ready to throw its defeated corpse back into whatever pit of hell spawned it."

Talk begins of destroying every last trace of the shrine as well as helping the land reheal. Acerion nods approvingly at those who are prepared to aid in each task. Validar also speaks to everyone about their decisions to carry on, but before he can reply to him, Acerion notices Elspeth still has yet to rise. Walking past Validar, he clasps the fellow noble on the shoulder and offers only a brief statement in reply, "You know my mind on this."

Acerion will look to Kharyna to see if she can determine why Elspeth remains seemingly unconscious. He will kneel near her to see if he can determine anything about Elspeth's condition on his own as well. If need be, he will use his Laying of Hands upon her, but otherwise wait and see if he, Kharyna or anyone else there, can discern anything.

Sherra:

Sherra heads quickly back inside when she hears commotion break out. She knew that several of the others were discussing what to do, but apparently there is no longer the need. She sees the other members picking themselves up and notices some of their weapons glowing and even changing before her eyes. As she moves closer, she hears a voice in her head.
"You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. For now savor your victory and know that you have our thanks and gratitude. To this end, I shall grant you each a boon for your efforts."
Sherra is at first not sure how to take that. She believes in the gods, but has hardly ever been "touched" by one before. From what she hears from everyone else, it was Mystra who spoke. Even Tymora has not done such an act toward her, although Sherra is fairly confident she has felt the goddess tip her hand in certain circumstances. Still, it is quite a bit for the thief to take in. She has no long speeches like some of the others do, and so says only a mental thank you. Thankfully, Validar quickly changes the subject.

"Of course I will continue on Validar," Sherra replies with a smile. "Knowing you, you will probably be as restless as I will be until we are once again on the road."

Laucian

He looks around the shrine at the others and notices Lilia lying down on the ground. Wondering if she is okay Laucian squats down by her side and places a hand on her shoulder. "It is time to wake my sister. Are you well?", he asks upon seeing her frazzled features. Reaching for his wineskin he will hand it to her, "This may help."
Lyonessa will approach Laucian, "I would like to join you in that task if I may. It is a noble gesture that should go far in healing the land even after we have left here."
"But of course, Lyonessa. You would be most welcome. It pleases me to see that there are those amongst us that care about the land as well as its inhabitants," he says with an easy grin.

Before they leave the shrine for the night Laucian will walk the inards of the shrine looking for hidden doors or caches within.

Chareos

Chareos watches as magical colors are released amongst his comrades. "By the gods...." is all that he can whisper as he takes a step back as Kharyna's mace touches the darkness.

He watches as the others are thrown from their feet and land nearby. Strange magics weave themselves around various weapons and Chareos watches in awe.

Soon a voice echos within Chareos's mind. "You have done a great deed this day. Evil has been turned back and its power shattered. But do not be overconfident. It shall return one day when you least expect. For now savor your victory and know that you have our thanks and gratitude. To this end, I shall grant you each a boon for your efforts."

"I thank you for your wondorous gift, My Lady of Mysteries. I do not doubt evil will return in time. Though when it does we shall face it as we did here this day."

Afterward Chareos looks to the others noticing Laucian going to Lilia. Chareos follows. Leaning on his staff above her he notices her features. It is almost as if she was stunned at what she saw. Curious he asks, "What happened?" If she needs help to her feet Chareos will extend his hand.

Validar soon speaks of future plans to return to Rennydale. Chareos is quick to ask his companion. "For those of us that are upon the Path of the Guardians, wouldn't it be wise to purchase or acquire weapons to practice with? Seeing how we will most likely be in the wilderness for sometime?"

Interlude and plans

Lord Validar -

Recovering from the battle, the group begins to make plans to move on.

Argent - "As I stated previously, I will continue on with your band, Lord Validar. Your goals are noble and I cannot find fault in them."

"Again your presence wil be most welcome, Argent. I am pleased that you have not changed your mind."

"Here here!" Laucian says, as he raises his bow in agreement.

"Thank you for the compliment, my elfin friend. I welcome your skills to our tasks."

"As for the destruction of this place, perhaps we can do so with some magical means rather than physical dismantling. Perhaps Sherwood and Jallarzi have some suggestions as well as Grondar."

"I too hope that your sibling has survived until this day. For now, even if she were altered and corrupted by the vile Black Water, then she will now be free. My suggestion next after Rennydale is to head for Corunglain. There were some problems there alluded to and they may be the result of the Black Water and they may be something more. In any case, we should be able to get much information on the fallen forts and also on the current status in Stone Ridge."

Validar also speaks to everyone about their decisions to carry on, but before he can reply to him, Acerion notices Elspeth still has yet to rise. Walking past Validar, he clasps the fellow noble on the shoulder and offers only a brief statement in reply, "You know my mind on this."

"Indeed," Lord Validar will simply respond, as he watches the noble head to the still prone figure of Elspeth.

"Of course I will continue on Validar," Sherra replies with a smile. "Knowing you, you will probably be as restless as I will be until we are once again on the road."

"You're perception of me is quite accurate, I am certain, Sherra. There is much to do and we have many large tasks before us that remain. Thank you for continuing to do battle with us."

Validar is somewhat confused by the request, but he barely shows it. "What sort of weapons do you mean, friend Chareos? We all seem to be well-armed already, unless you are talking about learning new weapons skills. I am certain that when we return to Rennydale that Lord Cavius can supply us with whatever basic weapons we require. Failing that, if there is an opportunity to return somewhat briefly to Pyris, then we are certain to have what you need there."

"As for being in the wilderness, that may be true to an extent, although with the corruption of the Black Water defeated, we should have fewer dangers to face while in the secure territories of the Kingdom. And there are many towns and cities that can provide resting places for us. I realize that with both Sherwood and Kharyna leaving us, we will be without their magical encampments."

"I agree, my friend," Grondar says. "We have achieved much, yet there is far more that needs doing. Many people remain in peril from dire forces. I have said before that I intend to continue on, and that is still my intent and Berronar's wish."
Validar wrote:"In the meantime, I agree with Grondar's assessment that this place should be destroyed.
"I'm looking forward to getting started on this first thing in the morning. As long as Sherwood or Jallarzi can provide one of their most magnificent magical shelters, we should be in good shape to do so."
Laucian wrote:"I agree this place should not be left intact. And it would gladden my heart to see this swamp be resored to what it could be. "A fine idea," Grondar says. "I would happily contribute to any effort that reduces the influence and residual effects of the evil that inhabited this place for so long."

Looking about, Grondar notices that Elspeth and Lilia are still down. Elspeth is being tended to by Laucian, and Grondar is confident of the Elven woodsman's ability to deal with any ill effects the priestess may be suffering. Grondar joins Chareos at Lilia's side, kneeling down next to the fallen woman. "Are you hurt, Lady Lilia? Is there any way in which I might assist you?"

"As for continuing on, I believe that my path lies in another direction," Kylie says. She turns, addressing the assembled group as she continues. "I have been speaking with Sherwood, and agree with him that we can no longer put off following up on the clues pointing towards the re-emergence of the Cult of the Black Flame. The trail appears to lead toward Elcadan, and I intend to follow it wherever it may lead."

"I know many of you have pledged to continue on with Lord Validar on his noble quest. However, if any of you not so pledged would be interested in helping us hunt down this Black Cult, your companionship and participation would be of great benefit to this effort and will be greatly appreciated."

Kylie looks over at Grondar and Laucian in particular. "No doubt we will remain here for a few days to see this situation wrapped up, to rest a bit, and ensure that this swamp is no longer tainted. Personally, I would enjoy planting a few trees," she concludes with a smile.

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden continues to lay on the ground, seemingly oblivious to what is transpiring around her. In her mind, the words and images of what she's seen persist in her mind. Words do begin to creep in eventually.
"It is time to wake my sister. Are you well?", Laucian asks upon seeing her frazzled features. Reaching for his wineskin he will hand it to her, "This may help."
"I hear you, fellow clansman. I---", Lilia pauses trying to find the proper words. She sits up and accepts the wineskin, taking a drink from it. Afterwards, she remembers to say "Thank you."
Afterward Chareos looks to the others, noticing Laucian going to Lilia. Chareos follows. Leaning on his staff above her he notices her features. It is almost as if she was stunned at what she's seen. Curious he asks, "What happened?" If she needs help to her feet Chareos will extend his hand.
Focusing in on Chareos, Lilia finally finds the words to speak. "The darkness tried to bribe me. Offered me what I desired the most: magical might. I would have eagerly taken his offer if not for an intervention." Looking squarely at Laucian, she will say, "The Father of All Elves himself touched my mind and showed me the err of my ways. That the path I was on would only lead to dark things. I rejected the offer and then I felt his energy leaving my body to destroy the darkness. Then he used his magic to alter my bow so that it no longer needs arrows."
Still sitting on the ground, Lilia will turn to Grondar when he kneels down beside her and smile. "I am not injured, good dwarf. Thank you for your concern. I believe I have had an epiphany."

Lilia will accept Chareos' hand and will thank him for his assistance. Once on her feet, Lilia will try to focus on what is going on around her, but fails. She absentmindedly examines her altered shortbow. She experimentally pulls the bowstring back and as she does a vague arrow-shaped green energy comes into existence. Taking aim, Lilia fires the energy arrow at the Shrine wall well away from anyone else. It strikes the wall and puts a small hole into it. Those looking on will see a broad smile on the Elf Maiden's face.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

"You're not getting rid of me that easily, Lord Validar", Argent will say with a broad smile.

Suddenly, Argent gets an unexpected revelation! The formula for a new spell pops into her mind!

Argent immediately excuses herself and begins to dig in her Bag of Holding. Pulling out her spellbook, Argent begins to write down the arcane formula for "Otliluke's Resilient Sphere.

Once finished, she'll seek out her friends and tell them the great news. (Jallarzi, Kharyna, and Kylie primarily.) "I've just gained access to the 4th level of magicks! I have new spells to learn! Where's that captured spell book again?"

Corley:

While unsure about what just transpired, Lord Corley does know a victory when he sees it. He'll walk about congratulating his associates. He would have liked to have had a bigger role in the battle, but it was not meant to be in this case. Still, a victory is a victory, regardless of the role one played in it.

He is unsure just what is going on when he hears the voice in is mind. Regardless of just who it is, the gift is most welcome. Corley will thank his benefactor profusely.

Swanny is still shaking off the effects of that thing falling on her. It seems that the battle has ended while she's been out of it. Oh well, there's always more excitement to be had down the line. Discovering that her crossbow has been destroyed, Swanny will chuck it into the swamp. Swanny will stay near Kharyna and Lara.
When he gets a chance, Grondar will approach Swanny and offer her more healing. If she accepts, he'll start by Laying On Hands. Afterwards, he'll convert any remaining spells other than Strength of Stone and Dispel Magic to healing and use them on the warrior-woman as well.
"Thanks. I could use it."

Sherwood:

Wearily, Sherwood picks himself off the ground. He doesn't bother trying to dust himself off. He steps away from everyone else, trying to shake off the effects of his ordeal. Finally, he wanders back. He is concerned about Elspeth, but she has always been resilient and he is confident that she'll recover shortly.
Validar wrote:"As for the destruction of this place, perhaps we can do so with some magical means rather than physical dismantling. Perhaps Sherwood and Jallarzi have some suggestions as well as Grondar."
"It is not a problem to bring this shrine down with magic."
"As for continuing on, I believe that my path is lies in another direction," Kylie says. She turns, addressing the assembled group as she continues. Upon hearing this, Sherwood will step in and correct what Kylie said. "Actually, the clues point to the Black Peak Mountains, the range that separates the inner and outer kingdom. That will be our destination."

"For those who were not with us earlier, we encountered what we believed to be operatives of the Cult of the Black Flame in Twin Forks. The Cult is very old and thought to have been extinguished a long time ago. A band of adventurers known as the Swords of Cynalon defeated them. This band was comprised of eight adventures and some were the ancestors of myself, Jallarzi, and Validar. A few of the Swords were demi-humans and we hope that they were still alive today and can provide us with more information on the Cult."

"One such member was an elf maiden with silvery hair named Nightmist. An 'X' was marked on a map that belonged to my ancestor, James the Red. It indicated a place in the Black Peak Mountains and had the word Nightmist next to it. It is my plan to follow this map into the mountains and see if we can find Nightmist."

Lady Sallavarian will say a silent prayer to Mystra for her guidance and support. The next thing Jallarzi knows, Argent is beside her helping her up.
Rushing in, Argent will assist Jallarzi in getting back to her feet. "Are you all right, Jallarzi? Do you need a healer? What happened in there?"
"I am well, Argent. Thank you for your concern. The darkness tried to fight us off and tantalize us with visions of what he could give us. They were just hollow dreams and easily ignored."

Validar & Sherwood wrote:"As for the destruction of this place, perhaps we can do so with some magical means rather than physical dismantling. Perhaps Sherwood and Jallarzi have some suggestions as well as Grondar."

"It is not a problem to bring this shrine down with magic."
"Indeed, my cousin is correct. I still have numerous combat spells in memory. The close quarters of the combat limited their use to me."

Jallarzi will make the rounds and see if everyone is okay. She'll give each of her apprentices a hug and let them know how proud she is of them. Jallarzi will complement Argent on making it to 4th level spells.

That is true, but during NF #16 Sherwood looked into what the men did in Elcadan. His findings where reported in NF#17. It IS possible to try and dig further if you desire. The attempt to find Nightmist seemed like a better avenue to pursue as it might shed some light on the background of the cult itself.

No problem. I just want Kylie to give some accounting of why she had thought what she had. I hadn't really expected to have this conversation at this particular point, but Validar brought it up and I didn't have time to research properly or discuss with you.

What's up with Elspeth?

Post by Kharyna »

KHARYNA -

Words dimly heard slowly leak into Grondar's consciousness. Pausing a moment, he levers himself into a sitting position. "Indeed, lady Kharyna; we did speak of that. Give me a moment to recover, and I will join you in doing so."

"No rush. I believe it may be prudent to make our plans today and complete them in the morning. We will have more time to prepare that way and the process should be much easier."

"Elspeth? Are you well?"

Forcing herself up, Ivy will move to examine her best friend. Kharyna beats her there.

"Is she going to be all right?", Ivy inquires of Kharyna.

Other ask the same question as Kharyna examines the young priestess of Azrella. After a few moments, Kharyna leans back. "She seems to be simply sleeping. Perhaps she was more drained by the ritual than the rest of us since she was the focal point. And perhaps the deities are conversing with her still and she simply hasn't returned to our reality as yet. In any case, she seems to be fine."

Grondar - "I'm looking forward to getting started on this first thing in the morning. As long as Sherwood or Jallarzi can provide one of their most magnificent magical shelters, we should be in good shape to do so."

"Very good. And I have the Secure Shelter spells available as well. Not as marvelous as the ones Jallarzi or Sherwood can produce, but adequate nonetheless."

Lord Validar -

I know that many of you have other responsibilities to attend to now that this is completed, however, as before, I would be honored if each of you continued to ride with the Guardians of the Light. We have much to accomplish."

"I agree, my friend," Grondar says. "We have achieved much, yet there is far more that needs doing. Many people remain in peril from dire forces. I have said before that I intend to continue on, and that is still my intent and Berronar's wish."

"I thank you, my dwarven friend. We welcome your continued dedication to the cause of our fine Kingdom. I am sure you will do well to make your patron proud."

"This has been a good victory, and we can take pride in the fact that we didn't lose anyone. While I have experienced some measure of trepidation along the way, I feel privileged to have been able to participate in what we achieved."

Lord Validar listens to Kylie's short speech. Based on that, it seems this short adventure has increased her maturity. He nods in her direction. "It is a noble cause, young Kylie, to be certain. I have my own desires to see the Cult of the Black Flame extinguished for all time. Should you need our assistance at any time in the future, the Guardians of the Light would make ourselves available to you if we are able."

"Again your presence wil be most welcome, Argent. I am pleased that you have not changed your mind."

"You're not getting rid of me that easily, Lord Validar", Argent will say with a broad smile.

"Nor would I try," Validar will say with a return of the smile. "Nor would I try."

"Impressive," Validar will say. "A fine weapon for an archer. I am certain you will be an even greater threat to your enemies."

Corley - "My vow to Stone Ridge still remains, Lord Validar. There is much we Sons of Cynalon have yet to accomplish! This is just the beginning!"

"Indeed, my good friend. It seems that bard we spoke of may be needed back home afterall. I am pleased we will continue to ride and fight together."

"As for the destruction of this place, perhaps we can do so with some magical means rather than physical dismantling. Perhaps Sherwood and Jallarzi have some suggestions as well as Grondar."

"It is not a problem to bring this shrine down with magic."

"Very good, Sherwood," Validar will respond. "We can make our final preparations and plans this evening and complete the task in the morning. I will be pleased to see this place changed when we leave. Our vow to rid this swamp of evil will be complete."

Validar listens to the conversations about the Cult and the Black Peak Mountains, taking in all that he can, but does not comment at the moment.

Once most of the conversations are done and Elspeth has returned to consciousness, then Validar will assemble everyone outside and prepare to return to where they left Po and Talia.
