New Frontiers #39

The epic struggle in the depths of Beleme Swamp continues!

Chareos casts Magic Missile at the Shambler suffocating Gwenith. His enchanted arrows strike the beast, but it continues to hold Gwenith fast.

Grondar rushes in and casts Cure Moderate Wounds on Gwenith, restoring some of her health.

Having been freed from the Hold spell by Elspeth, Kylie gives her thanks and circles off to the right. Once she has a clear shot, the young half-elf casts Magic Missile at the fighter engaging Validar. The projectiles slam into the fighter, ending his life.

At nearly the same time, Kharyna sends her own Magic Missiles at Swanny's opponent. The result is the same and the second fighter goes down.

Seeing this transpire, Lilia sends her Magic Missile at the Shambler attacking Gwenith. Her Missiles further wound the monster, but it refuses to release Gwenith.

Freed from their foe, Validar and Swanny rush to engage the approaching Swamp Monster. Validar connects twice sending mud and rotting plant flying from the giant's leg.

Pausing only to exchange her shield for her Short Sword of Quickness, Swanny joins Lord Validar in the assault on the Swamp Monster. Her twin blades bite deep into the beast's other leg, further injuring it.

Argent joins the festivities casting her own Magic Missiles at the Swamp Monster. The four sparkling missiles slam into the Shambler holding Gwenith. The spell slays the monster and it drops to the ground in a heap. Weakly Gwenith pulls herself free from the mess.

Switching to her mace, Lyonessa rushes to engage the zombie that attacked Lord Acerion. Reaching it, the Songstress of Mystra bashes the thing right in the face, forcing it back into the scummy waters of the swamp. The zombie does not return.

Lara casts Magic Missile at the Swamp Monster, causing more damage to it.

Laucian maneuvers to have a clear shot at the Lord of Corruption. Once set, he fires off a pair of shafts. The first is inexplicably wide of the mark. The second arrow does connect, wounding Vryxnr.

Enraged at this Vryxnr dashes forward and attempts to smash Validar in the back with his mace. The deranged priest misses.

Sherwood who had been chasing after Vryxnr finally catches up to him. The Ranger/Mage strikes with both Lifeshield and his Flametongue Shortsword. Both blades strike true, but Vryxnr does not go down.

Lady Sallavarian continues the assault on Vryxnr by casting Melf's Acid Arrow. The magically created arrows fly at Vryxnr, but mysteriously miss him by several feet.

Lord Acerion maintains his assault on the Shambler that rose up from the left hand side of the path. His enchanted battle axe strikes something solid in the swamp monster, but it still stands. The monster slams Acerion back with one of its flailing arms doing minor damage to the Paladin of Heironeous.

Close by, Lord Corley attacks the Shambler that has incapacitated Ivy. He hits twice with his greatsword, slicing away huge chunks of the monster. Finally, enough of its body has been destroyed that the Shambler falls apart and into the swamp. Ivy has been freed from its embrace, but the Priestess tumbles into the swamp with the remains of the monster.

In the middle of the battle zone, Elspeth destroys one of the few remaining zombies with her mace.

Sherra uses her Boots of Levitation to rise above the battle field. After relocating the moving Vryxnr, she locks in on him and fires a pair of shafts. This time there is no distortion effect and both arrows strike solidly to the vile priest's midsection. He goes down from the assault.

The gigantic Swamp Monster has sustained heavy damage and becomes wobbly on its feet. Unexpectedly, it collapses down on top of Swanny and Lord Validar! The two warriors become lost from sight as the monster falls on top of them! A zombie that was in the area was crushed as well.

Ominously, the Swamp Monster draws forth more material from the ground to repair the damage done to it. The beast remains prone, but it's only a matter of time before it will rise up once more!

GM Notes:

Ivy has been freed from the Shambler, but has taken a tumble into the swamp waters. She'll spend the next phase catching her breath and getting water out of her lungs. Gwenith has also been freed and will also need to catch her breath and get rotting vegetation out of her mouth. (ICK!)

Both Validar and Swanny are inside the Swamp Monster and unable to communicate with anyone else. The battle is entering the home stretch!

The Swamp Battle Map has been updated.

Hit Points:

Acerion - 28 of 46
Gwenith - 12 of 30
Swanny - 45 of 73
Validar - 51 of 76

Busting out...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Lord Validar is pleased as the plan begins to take form. In quick moments, the fighters engaging Aswansea and himself are dropped by magic from their comrades and Validar leads the brave warrior woman towards the Spirit of the Swamp.

Validar swings his enchanted blade in a mighty arc ripping apart chunks of the monster's leg with each swing. Validar says nothing, sticking to the monumental task at hand. Nearby Aswansea also hacks wildly at the monster and sends bits flying. Grimly, the fighters continue their attack.

Validar catches a movement coming at him as he continues to attack the Spirit of the Swamp and manges to barely evade an attack by Vyrxnr himself. Fortunately, Sherwood arrives and engages the mad priest and Validar can continue to focus on his task.

Then Validar's eyes widen with realization as he sees the results of the attacks on the creature. It teeters on its damaged limbs and then collapses down upon them.

There is not much Lord Validar can do except endure the crushing weight of the swamp cascading down upon him. When the force has stopped, Validar is unable to see or communicate in any way, so he does the only thing he can. He starts swinging his sword in an effort to cut his way out of this disgusting mess.

To Argent

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

"Some of us are also honor bound to help recover the lands of Stone Ridge that have fallen. My goal is to stabilize the Western lands and safeguard the territories of my family as well as strengthen the Kingdom."

"I learned much about this region during my apprenticeship with Jallarzi. I am certainly open to achieving such lofty goals to help re-stabilize the kingdom. Should I gain more magic and jewels in the process, so much the better. Plus there are always other incentives to be had", Argent adds with a sly smile.

"We will be pleased to have you with us the, Argent. I am sure that your personal goals as well as those of the kingdom can happily co-exist. Your presence here will certainly enhance our group in many ways," Validar says, returning the smile with one of his own.

"That does not tell you much about myself, but it does explain how I am here."

"Thank you for your time and your tale, Lord Validar. Perhaps we can get into more personal details some other time. A pleasant evening to you, milord."

"And to you, as well, Argent. I would be happy to continue our conversation at another time." Validar will bow his head slightly toward the beautiful mage and take his leave.

Surviving the Swamp Monster

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:

Berronar's blessings flow into the critically-injured swordswoman, improving her condition notably. Over the the next few moments, attacks from their comrades slay the creature that threatened to end her life. Noting that Gwenith was now out of immediate danger, Grondar scans the battlefield.

Another of the Shamblers is slain in short order, eliminating that threat to Ivy as well. The two warriors who had been engaging Lord Validar and Aswansea are put down by spells from a couple of the mages. More importantly, Vryxnr himself closes to melee range with Validar and Sherwood, and is quickly killed! Praise be to the Revered Mother and all the gods above! He notes that Sherra struck the final blow; he will have to congratulate his friend when the battle is done.

The threats have become few indeed, however the greatest of them all still remains: the Spirit of the Swamp! A combination of attacks causes it to fall - right on Validar and Aswansea! Grondar swallows hard at the thought of the possible demise of these two fine companions. It is clear that the swamp monster is down, but not out. Something must be done!

A thought comes to Grondar, causing him to shout out, "Sherwood! Jallarzi! I think the monster was summoned! Might it not then also be dispelled?!"

There remains also one zombie, and it is near enough to threaten the fallen Gwenith or others. Rather than allow that, Grondar races close and attempts to destroy it with his mace. If successful, he will loop around and interpose himself between Kieran and Gwenith. The young is Held for the moment, but Grondar is unsure how long that state will remain.

Surviving the Swamp Monster

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:

As she moves, Kylie notes the battle finally turning in their favor. Gwenith and Ivy are rescued from the disgusting fates that awaited them in the grasp of those putrid swamp creatures. Her own Magic Missiles slay one of the opposing warriors, as Kharyna does the same for the other. Kylie feels a moment of exhultation at the successful use of her spell.

Without the Shambler to hide behind, Vryxnr moves to attack Validar, missing the large warrior with his mace. Perhaps he wasn't as great a threat as he imagined himself! Even better, Laucian, Sherwood and Sherra combine to complete his doom. Caught up in the moment, Kylie joyfully shouts "Yes!" upon seeing Vryxnr slain. "Whoohoo!"

Kylie suddenly comes to the realization that the Swamp Spirit still remains. However, attacks from many directions cause it to fall as well. The huge creature collapses right on top of Validar and Swanny! Kylie stops, shocked. Are they dead? Could anyone survive that?

It seems the creature has survived the terrible damage done to it once again. Seeing it start to move, Kylie prepares her Lightning Bolt. However, she hears Grondar's shouted questions and pauses, waiting for the response of the elder mages. Hopefully the priest is right and they can eliminate the monster. However, if it appears to be rising, Kylie will attempt to slow it with her Lightning Bolt.

To Remove the Spirit of the Swamp

Post by Kharyna »

Kharyna -

Kharyna follows Lord Validar's plan and sends her Magic Missiles at the Fighter battling Swanny. He quickly drops alongside his comrade, who is feled by Kylie striking at nearly the same moment.

"So far so good," Kharyna says to herself.

The others begin to rip into the Swamp Monster and in a few short moments, it teeters and falls! However, it is not a moment for elation as it falls on Swanny and Validar. To add insult to injury, the summoned Spirit is not destroyed and simply reforms itself by absorbing the swamp into itself.

"Now we end this!", Kharyna will shout. She will cast a Lightning Bolt at the creature, making sure to target a limb or the head and not be anywhere near the part that fell on the two fighters. Having gained a little more altitude, she fires it at an angle and therfore is less likely to hit anyone else as it shoots into the ground.

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Acerion:

Acerion's axe bites deep, but still the shambler refuses to go down. He has to tug hard to pull the axe free from whatever he had connected with inside its body.

He dares a glance around him and sees both Corley and Lyonessa successful in their tasks. He sighs a bit of relief in knowing that Ivy will be alright and knew it was wise to trust the young noble in his actions to save her. He brings his attention back immediately, but is unable to ward off another blow by the creature.

His wounds don't seem too serious yet, but Acerion has no time to allow for a thorough examination, so he adjusts the grip on his battle axe and once again sets to the task of chopping down this vegatation monster.

Sherwood:
Sherwood who had been chasing after Vryxnr finally catches up to him. The Ranger/Mage strikes with both Lifeshield and his Flametongue Shortsword. Both blades strike true, but Vryxnr does not go down.
Sherwood sighs in relief when he finally catches up to Vryxnr and manages to draw blood. It's not enough to defeat the mad priest, but Sherra takes care of that with a few well-placed arrows. Sherwood will wave in her direction, congratulating the young woman on her skill with the bow.

Looking about, the battle seems to be winding down. Only the gigantic Swamp Spirit is active in the immediate area. While deciding how to deal with the monstrosity, Sherwood hears Grondar's voice call out.
A thought comes to Grondar, causing him to shout out, "Sherwood! Jallarzi! I think the monster was summoned! Might it not then also be dispelled?!"
"It's worth a shot!", Sherwood will call out. "Jallarzi if you will do the honors? Everyone else who can, attack the monster with weapons or spells. Magic Missiles would be ideal in this situation as they won't harm those trapped within!"

Sheathing his blades, Sherwood will speak the mystic words to cast a spell of his own: one designed to forcibly remove an extraplanar creature from this plane. Sherwood will cast Dismissal at the Swamp Spirit, hoping to force it back to where it came from.

Jallarzi:
Lady Sallavarian continues the assault on Vryxnr by casting Melf's Acid Arrow. The magically created arrows fly at Vryxnr, but mysteriously miss him by several feet.
Jallarzi mentally kicks herself for trying that particular spell. She forgot that Melf's Acid Arrows is not an automatically targeted spell like Magic Missile. Vryxnr's Cloak of Displacement caused her to miss.

Eyeing the Swamp Spirit, Jallarzi really wishes that she had a Wall of Force spell in memory. But she doesn't so there is no point going any further down that line of reasoning.

After hearing Grondar and Sherwood speak, Jallarzi will say. "It would be a pleasure, gentlemen."

Cast Dispel Magic at the swamp creature itself in hopes of dispelling it.

"Yes!", Argent cries out as her spell finishes off the swamp monster trying to devour Gwenith. The Invoker looks back in horror as the Spirit of the Swamp collapses on Lord Validar and Swanny! "We've got to get them out of there before it's too late!"

Argent is ready to send a Lightning Bolt at the prone monster when she hears Sherwood calling out.
"Its worth a shot!", Sherwood will call out. "Jallarzi if you will do the honors? Everyone else who can, attack the monster with weapons or spells. Magic Missiles would be ideal in this situation as they won't harm those trapped within!"
"Yes, that makes sense and Magic Missile is my favorite spell!"

Argent will cast Magic Missile at the Swamp Monster. (By my calculations she should have at least two more Magic Missiles available beyond this one.)

Corley gives out a victory cry when he finally dispatches this wet and slimy horror! Lady Ivy is freed from its infernal grasp, but plunges into the swamp waters with it!

"IVY!", Lord Corley cries out. Realizing that armor and swamp waters usually don't mix, Corley won't go in after Ivy unless she is in need of immediate aid. (Doesn't resurface, appears to be drowning or attacked, etc.)

If Ivy is momentarily safe, Corley will rush to assist Lord Acerion against his foe.

Help Lord Acerion attack the remaining Shambler.

Shortly after being drawn into the strange swamp monster, Ivy feels herself coming out again and that she is falling. Before a cry of surprise can escape her lips, Ivy hits the scum-covered swamp waters with a terrific splash.

"Not again", Ivy mutters to herself.

If the water isn't too deep, Ivy will stand and try to pull herself back up onto the path. Ivy coughs a few times to get unwanted stuff out of her mouth and bring fresh air in. Spying Lord Corley standing there she will urge him to help the others in the battle.

"I'll be fine, Lord Corley. Just a bit damp and soiled is all. Go help the others."

The Elf Maiden will curse once more as it was not her magic that felled the foe in question. That honor belongs to the human sorceress Argent this time. It is interesting how her Magic Missiles look different from everyone else's. How does she make them sparkle like that?

The center of attention turns to the huge Swamp Spirit as it appears to be just about the only significant foe left. Lilia will flutter a bit closer, but will keep well out of the monster's reach. Hearing the exchange between Sherwood and the dwarf, Lilia will send her last Magic Missile at the Swamp Spirit.

With the combined efforts, the shambler holding Gwenith is dispatched and Chareos gives a sigh of relief. "That was close," he says to himself as he watches Gwen recatch her breath.

It is short-lived as a large thud is heard from behind. Turning and looking he notices the Spirit of the Swamp lying on the ground and with Swanny and Validar not in sight.

Calls for Magic Missiles come and he quickly casts Magic Missile spell at the gigantic figure of the swamp beast.

Sherra isn't sure if either the magical effect that Vryxnr had protecting him was not working any more or because she knew what she was looking for that caused it to fail, but whatever the case, her aim is true and her arrows strike home, dropping the vile priest and he rises no more.
Sherwood sighs in relief when he finally catches up to Vryxnr and manages to draw blood. It's not enough to defeat the mad priest, but Sherra takes care of that with a few well placed arrows. Sherwood will wave in her direction, congratulating the young woman on her skill with the bow.
Sherra will raise a hand back in response to Sherwood and an easy smile slips into its usual place. There doesn't seem to be many foes left to deal with, and she is thankful for that. Apparently however, the large swamp monster seems to be regenerating.
A thought comes to Grondar, causing him to shout out, "Sherwood! Jallarzi! I think the monster was summoned! Might it not then also be dispelled?!"

Sherra has no such magic, but prepares another arrow. She will hold her fire until all the various dispels and other magics are used and will attack only if they prove to be ineffective. If she needs to attack, she will try to not aim at anyplace where Validar or Swanny might be trapped under.

Lord Acerion is still struggling with the shambler, but she doubts she could provide much help, especially seeing Corley moving in to offer aid.

The rest of the struggle revolves around the much larger Spirit of the Swamp, but she has no distance spells that will be helpful against battling that monstrousity. She decides to stay near the lords and Ivy in case the battle turns sour and one of them needs a healing spell. Otherwise, she will keep an eye out for more undead or anything else coming out of the swamp.

Laucian watches as his first shaft sails wide of the mark. He draws another arrow from his quiver and fires again. Much to his delight he strikes his foe but the priest/mage(could be both) still stands.

He sees the Lord of Corruption enraged by their actions run for Validar and try to strike him. Before he can utter a warning of the encounter the priest is brought down by the Guardians' combined efforts.

As the others begin battle with the Swamp beast it takes heavy damage and before his comrades can move it teeters and falls...."Look out!!!!" is all the elf can say as Validar and Swanny vanish from sight.

Knowing full well he is better with his bow he will draw more arrows and aim at the head/shoulder of the Spirit of the Swamp, while he says to himself, "Hold on my friends."

Post Continued:

The battle in Beleme Swamp continues!

The number of enemies continues to dwindle and more of the Guardians join the assault on the Swamp Spirit. The large creature slowly rises to his feet once more, having healed itself of the damage done to it by absorbing more of the swamp into its being. An armored foot is sticking out of the giant's chest, showing the rough location of either Swanny or Lord Validar. You can't be sure just which one it is.

Following Sherwood's suggestion, Chareos, Lara, Lilia, and Argent hurl Magic Missiles at the behemoth. They are careful to target areas away from the trapped fighters. A total of 13 missiles slam into the spirit, many blowing away portions of its body.

This is followed up by Lightning Bolts by Kharyna and then Kylie. Both ladies target the head of the giant to avoid striking anyone else. The head of the giant is blown clean away by the two Lightning Bolts.

The force of that attack is unintentionally felt by those trapped within the giant. (The giant is composed of all elements that make up the swamp, including water. Water conducts electricity so those inside are damaged too.)

Lady Sallavarian and Sherwood cast their spells next and attempt to remove the Swamp Spirit. While their spells are different, their intended results are the same. However, their magic appears to be for naught and the Swamp Spirit remains.

What remains of the giant becomes unsteady due to the massive damage done to it. It teeters for a moment and then drops to its knees. Multiple arrow volleys from Sherra, Arocken, and Laucian follow. Each missile rips into the giant and more of its body is expelled violently, as they pass through.

Unexpected movement from the giant's chest gets the onlookers' attention. Suddenly, a longsword slashes out of the chest from the inside! A wide rip in the Spirit's chest appears and Lord Validar can be seen. A moment after that what remains simply collapses to the ground forming a mound of mud, plant, and water.

Those previously trapped within the giant can now be seen and pulled out, including those stepped on previously. The Swamp Spirit does not reform.

In the background, the other battles are wrapped up as well. Grondar smashes the last zombie with his mace. Lords Acerion and Corley team up and shred the last of the Shamblers, sending the moss and vegetation that comprised it flying every which way. The monster does get one last hit in on both lords before it is destroyed. The damage done to Lord Corley is repaired by his magical ring after hitting his foe. Lyonessa stands guard over the lords as they defeat their enemy.

Ivy finds the swamp water to only be waist deep and catches her breath before wading back to shore. Elspeth assists Gwenith who is also catching her breath from being smothered by a Shambler. The battle at the evil shrine in Beleme Swamp is over.

Covered in muck, but victorious...

Post by Validar »

LORD VALIDAR -

Lord Validar cannot see and realizing he is inside the Swamp Spirit causes him to not bother to try and speak. Even his hearing is muffled, as if underwater. He can hear shouting, but cannot seem to make out any of the words.

As he tries to hack his way out of the muck, he feels movement and realizes that the Swamp Spirit is still active and functioning. This only serves to fuel his resolve and he swings his enchanted blade even more and with more fervor.

There are sounds of small explosions and larger ones and Lord Validar feels a pair of electrical shocks shoot through his body. He steels himself for more to come, gritting his teeth against the pain.

Fortunately, there are no more electrical shocks and the feeling of motion continues. This time going down, rather than up, and twisting. He tries to avoid the feelings of extreme vertigo and concentrate on freeing himself.

Moments later, one of Lord Validar's strikes reaches fresh air. His arm and sword rip out of the Spirit of the Swamp sending large quantities of muck flying everywhere and the young noble takes in a long deep breath of (somewhat) clean air.

Finally, the beast collapses to a pile of swamp water, mud, plants and insects. Validar pulls himself free of the disgusting mass and saltues to his comrades with his sword. The blade is clean and shiny as the muck simply drips off the enchanted weapon and while his tabard and cloak are mud-stained, the fine armor seems to repel the dirt and grime as it continues to drip from the wet noble. "Well done!", he will call out to his assembled friends.

"So, now we seem to be unimpeded for Elspeth to complete her task, but I would advise caution. The Shrine itself may yet hold surprises. Perhaps the priests should try to Detect any further taint of Evil?"

She moves away from the battle against the giant swamp creature. Reaching Gwenith, Elspeth will assist in moving the swordswoman to a place of safety where she can recover.
As he speeds toward the zombie, Grondar notes Elspeth moving to assist Gwenith. He nods in approval just before smashing the final zombie into little more than powder with his enchanted mace.

Grondar can only watch as the others go to work on the humongous creature. Spells and arrows tear numerous chunks out of the giant. However, the final blow seems to come from within, as first a sword emerges, slashing this way and that. The powerful blade is followed by none other than Lord Validar as he steps from the chest of the monster, even as it returns to disparate masses of which it was composed. Moments later, Aswansea can be seen emerging as well.

Looking about the battleground, Grondar notes several of their band who are seriously injured. Validar himself will of course not wish Berronar's assistance, but the others may well be less resistant.
Validar wrote:"So, now we seem to be unimpeded for Elspeth to complete her task, but I would advise caution. The Shrine itself may yet hold surprises. Perhaps the priests should try to Detect any further taint of Evil?"
"Should we not patch up the wounded some first, Lord Validar?" Even as he asks, Grondar moves to Aswansea and Acerion to assess their injuries.

Surviving the Swamp Monster

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:
Sherwood wrote:"It's worth a shot!", Sherwood will call out. "Jallarzi if you will do the honors? Everyone else who can, attack the monster with weapons or spells. Magic Missiles would be ideal in this situation as they won't harm those trapped within!"
Kylie takes note of Sherwood's instructions. Unfortunately, she has no Magic Missiles left, only the Lightning Bolt. She will just have to use that, and hope that targetting the head will leave those entrapped within the monster's body unharmed.
Ivy wrote:If the water isn't too deep, Ivy will stand and try to pull herself back up onto the path. Ivy coughs a few times to get unwanted stuff out of her mouth and bring fresh air in. Spying Lord Corley standing there she will urge him to help the others in the battle.

"I'll be fine, Lord Corley. Just a bit damp and soiled is all. Go help the others."
Ivy's words from not far away attract Kylie's attention. It is comforting to see that the priestess is alright and managing to extract herself from the muck of the swamp.

Kylie joins the other spellcasters in blasting at the swamp spirit. They are joined by others firing arrows, and even Validar carving his way out from inside! Amazing. Apparently they have found the creature's ability to withstand punishment, as it discorporates into its component materials.

A big sigh of relief escapes Kylie's lips as the reality of their victory seeps into her consciousness. Validar and Aswansea pulls themselves from the the muck which represents all the remains of the swamp giant.
Validar wrote:"So, now we seem to be unimpeded for Elspeth to complete her task, but I would advise caution. The Shrine itself may yet hold surprises. Perhaps the priests should try to Detect any further taint of Evil?"
Unfortunately, the truth is that they are not done here yet, and the young acquisitions expert's elation sinks a little. Oh well, they have done well so far; perhaps the worst is behind them. Kylie prepares for the investigation of the shrine.

Once the priests have done as Validar asks, Kylie will make a suggestion. "Perhaps some stealth would be advisable at this point, Validar." It occurs to her that her Wraithform and Detect Invisibility might allow her to scout the interior in relative safety.

The lords dispatch their foe and so Lyonessa turns to watch the others finally bring the Spirit of the Swamp down. She is very relieved when it appears all members of her band are alive, although several are injured. As she prepares to give aid in the form of healing spells, or with more mundane means as necessary, she remembers Kieran.

"Let us not forget Kieran," Lyonessa will say. "I pray that one among us has the power left to free him."

Lord Validar -

"So, now we seem to be unimpeded for Elspeth to complete her task, but I would advise caution. The Shrine itself may yet hold surprises. Perhaps the priests should try to Detect any further taint of Evil?"

"Should we not patch up the wounded some first, Lord Validar?" Even as he asks, Grondar moves to Aswansea and Acerion to assess their injuries.

Lord Validar considers the comment, as he looks around at those who have been injured. Only three other of their number seem to show any damage from the battle. "By my count, we have six members capable of healing and only 3 injured seriously besides myself. We should be able to not only help the wounded immediately, but also not delay in dealing with this vile structure," Validar will indicate the shrine with his sword point.

Validar helps Aswansea pull herself from the muck if she needs the assistance and then steps over to regard the shrine without getting too first before the priests' complete their tasks.

Once the priests have done as Validar asks, Kylie will make a suggestion. "Perhaps some stealth would be advisable at this point, Validar." It occurs to her that her Wraithform and Detect Invisibility might allow her to scout the interior in relative safety.

"I would not discount that suggestion, Kylie. There is no need to rush our way into a trap or unexpected situation. At the same time, I do not wish to give this place any time to recover in any way." A thought comes over the young noble. "Arocken, Lara, keep your eyes on the dead Vryxnr. I don;t want to have any surprises. The rest of you keep an eye on the swamp and also on the shrine. And once the healing we plan to do is completed, we should spread out more to get better views of the whole space. But don't anyone wander off just yet. We cannot assume the danger has passed."

"Let us not forget Kieran," Lyonessa will say. "I pray that one among us has the power left to free him."

"Indeed, she is correct. If someone could see to him as well?"

KHARYNA -

Kharyna is pleased to see that the Lightning Bolts that Kylie and her threw at the Spirit of the Swamp did not overly harm Swannie and Lord Validar. They are pretty tough and she figured they could survive the onslaught.

Kharyna will lower herself to the ground level and watch what's going on. She will "burn" her Wall of Fog spell and cast a CLW on Swannie. She will then look to keeping an eye on the shrine. Depending on what happens next, she may cast another heal on her friend.

"That's quite the smell you've uncovered there, Swannie. We may not let you sleep in the room with us," she says with a sly grin and holding her nose, mockingly.

Sherra:

Everyone's attacks hit their mark on the Spirit of the Swamp, but it isn't until Validar cuts himself free from inside the beast that it finally can take no more punishment. She smiles easily as the battle is finally over. There will definitely be quite a tale to tell Talia!

Lowering herself back down to the swampy ground using her boots, Sherra will keep her bow at the ready. She heard Validar say we would be moving inside soon enough. She will keep watch on the surrounding area and make sure nothing lurks out from inside the shrine itself.

He notes Kharyna moving over to Aswansea and using her own healing spells upon her young friend. Thus, he approaches Acerion. "May I tend to your wounds, young lord?" If he agrees, Grondar will convert his Silence, 15' Rad to a CMW and use that.

When he gets a moment, Grondar wanders over to Sherra. "That was some great shooting, Sherra! It must feel good knowing you were the one to put that hideous pustule down."

"Just wanted to mention that we have other options than busting down the door and storming in. For example, Wraithform would allow me to slip in through a crack while protecting me from most attacks. In fact, most undead would ignore me completely. And there may be others here with similar options available to them so I wouldn't have to go alone."

Based on Validar's instructions, Kylie moves to one corner of the building so that she's in sight of the others, yet has a good view along that side to the back and out across the swamp.

Post by Acerion »

Acerion:

Acerion puts a gauntleted hand on Corley's shoulder, "Thank you for the assist. That one was very determnided." Acerion is glad to see that the shambler does not rise once more.

Turning he sees Lyonessa stayed close in case there was need of assistance. He will nod his thanks to her before seeing about Ivy. He will brush a strand of soaked hair from her face and look into her eyes. The moment is interrupted by Grondar.

Since Grondar doesn't currently have any Detect Evil miracles amongst the blessings granted by Berronar, he assigns himself to the healing cadre. Laucian

Laucian watches as the combined efforts of both magic and arrows seemingly end the threat of the Spirit of the Swamp. After only a moment Lord Validar soon carves himself out of the innards of the beast. With the beast finally disposed of a smile forms across his weathered features.

"Well done my comrades!" he says looking to the others with a wide smile.
He looks around at the others looking for injuries. Finding only a few hurt he moves to Elspeth and Gwen. Seeing that the young Captain is in the need of healing he will burn his Stalk spell and convert it to a healing spell and heal the warrior.

Afterward he will seek out Sherra, "Thank you for watching over us while we were petrified." He will extend his hand to hers in a way of thanking her. If she takes his hand he will lean down and kiss it in thanks.

He soon draws his bow and arrow and watches the horizon/sky for any possible threats if any zombie is within range of his aim he will take it.

"Thank you for such kind words Grondar," Sherra will reply, smiling at her dwarven friend. "It does kind of swell the pride to know my arrows sent him to his demise." She will laugh lightly, for though she wouldn't normally enjoy bragging, it seems most appropriate right then.

"Really it was nothing, but you are most welcome. I wouldn't let any of our group come to harm when they were put in such a situation. This time it just happened to be you who were among those in need of aid," Sherra will say, smiling easily to let Laucian know her sincerity and appreciation of his thanks. She will take his hand and be a bit surprised at the kiss, but will keep her smile in place and nod her head to him in response.

Chareos watches as his friend's sword cuts through the interior of the swamp beast emerging from the grime within. Approaching Lord Validar, "It is good to see that you are well. You had us worried for a time," he says with a reassured smile.

As options are laid out among the others whether to heal then move on Chareos speaks up, "I feel we should heal those who need it most and then move on. This place is not yet secure and to dally could prove unwise. As for the shrine itself, I too have a wraithform within memory if it is decided to use such a method for scouting. Though what if the shrine is somehow protected by such magics?"

The front entrance to the shrine is a simple opening in the otherwise stone building. A ragged and torn curtain serves as a door. It is the only entrance to the small shrine.
After he receives the healing spell, Acerion will use his own Detect Evil abilities and relay any information revealed to Validar and the others.
The entire swamp continues to radiate intense evil as it did before.

Ivy:

Fortunately, the foul swamp water isn't too deep and Ivy finds solid footing. Air is quickly breathed in and the priestess begins to feel a little bit better. Turning, she wades back towards the shore and tries to find her way up.

Lord Acerion is already there, having dispatched his foe while her back was turned. He offers his hand and Ivy eagerly accepts it. The paladin easily pulls me up on shore.

"Thank you, milord. This swamp is quite putrid!"

While Lord Acerion brushes a stray hair out of my face, I notice that there are still some zombies moving about. (One's already turned.)

"Have at them!", Ivy calls out and grabs her enchanted mace once more. "Don't let any of them get away!"

Unless somehow blocked, Ivy will rush forward and start pounding away on any zombies left in the area. She won't permit any of the foul creatures to escape her wrath!

Sherwood:

Sherwood's spell doesn't work as he had hoped and the giant swamp creature remains.

"Guess we'll just have to use more direct methods."

While getting ready to cast his own Magic Missile at the giant, Validar bursts forth from the behemoth and it seemingly goes down for good.

"Must have ate something that didn't agree with it," Sherwood will note with a relieved look on his bearded face.

Looking about, it seems that all the enemy has been dealt with. Healers are moving to tend to the injured and Validar has set up guards.

"Those who can Detect Magic should do so and relieve these men of any magic they may have in their possession."
Chareos wrote:"This place is not yet secure and to dally could prove unwise. As for the shrine itself, I too have a wraithform within memory if it is decided to use such a method for scouting. Though what if the shrine is somehow protected by such magics?"
Sherwood catches some of the conversation on how to proceed into the Shrine. Moving to the front of the Shrine, he'll say to those present, "Save your spells. I'll secure the shrine."

Stepping up the entrance, Sherwood will draw Lifeshield and mentally command it to full defense. Then he'll step up to the entrance, throw the curtain aside, and step in.

Argent:

The Invoker continues to fly a safe distance from the battle. She adds her Magic Missiles to those of the others and together we manage to overcome the so-called 'Spirit of the Swamp'. With the threat seeming over, Argent will come in closer and land.

However, once Lord Validar gives the command to spread out and keep an eye out for any danger, Argent will take off once more. She'll do an aerial sweep around the immediate area looking for any trouble.

She'll note Ivy calling out down below and trying to continue her assault on the few zombies that remain.

"I should have seen that coming", Argent tells herself having spent enough time with Schar to know of her hatred against undead. "There's no way she'd simply just let them walk away unharmed."

Argent will lend Ivy a hand and cast Magic Missile. She'll spread the attack evenly between two zombies if at all possible.

Jallarzi:

"Nicely done," Lady Sallavarian will compliment as the Swamp Spirit finally falls.

That matter taken care of, Jallarzi moves to continue guarding Elspeth, her enchanted hand following behind for protection. Sherwood moving to enter the shrine does not cause any concern to Jallarzi. She's well aware of the abilities of Lifeshield when it comes to magical protection.

While that is going on, talk of the paralyzed Kieran reaches her ears.

"Yes, I had nearly forgotten about him. Stand back and I'll Dispel the magic affecting him. But remember he was being controlled by Vryxnr before and still may be."

Jallarzi will cast her second Dispel Magic on Kieran.

Once Sherwood has cleared the way, Jallarzi will escort Elspeth into the shrine so she can carry out her part in this mission.

Seeing Lord Acerion go to Ivy's aid, Lord Corley will continue forward and see what needs to be done. Unexpectedly, Lady Ivy comes rushing past poised for battle! The remaining zombies seem to be her target.
"Have at them!", Ivy calls out and grabs her enchanted mace once more. "Don't let any of them get away!"

"Thanks", Swanny mumbles as she's helped back to her feet.

Post Continued:

In the aftermath of the battle, some of the Guardians take defensive positions while others assist the wounded.

Gwenith is nearly completely healed by Elspeth, allowing Laucian to keep his Stalk spell. Grondar casts Cure Moderate Wounds on Lord Acerion. Kharyna casts Cure Light Wounds on Swanny.

The only real excitement comes when Ivy goes after those few zombies who are still on solid ground. Her mace dispatches another one, while Lord Corley slices one in half with his greatsword. Argent lends a hand and downs the last one with a Magic Missile. The only zombies left in sight are those wading into the swamp waters.

Jallarzi casts Dispel Magic on Kieran and he is freed from both the Hold spell and Vryxnr's controlling spell.

Lilia Detects Magic and begins to collect magic items from around the battle site.

Sherwood approaches the Shrine itself and puts Lifeshield into full defensive mode. He casually pushes the curtain covering the entrance aside and enters.

A minute or two passes before Sherwood returns. He rips the curtain down and gestures that the Shrine is safe to enter.

As you walk up the steps into the Shrine, you leave the mud behind and find your feet on solid stone. The inside of the Shrine is composed of three chambers. The first is also the largest. It's fifty feet by sixty feet in size. Two smaller chambers of equal size are on the left and right hand walls. (The main chamber is as large as the outside entry platform of the Shrine as shown on the Swamp Battle Map. Just carry the sides all the way back to the rear of the building.)

Just inside the shrine are several bottles and vials carelessly strewn on the floor. There are half a dozen of these bottles and two have broken from being dropped. The other four are all open and whatever they once held is gone. Dirt and refuse cover much of the chamber's floor.

The main feature of the chamber is a large, almost circular area in the middle. Stone steps, five in all, lead down to a muddy area. Near the heart of this depression you can see blackish water rising up from the ground. Several large bowls are nearly buried in the mud to collect the water. Numerous empty bottles are in the area, along with a ladle.

The side rooms are also empty. The one on the right seems to have been a large common rest area. Numerous bedrolls are present, but no one is here. The one on the left is also a rest area, but seemingly for only one individual. Curtains much like those on the main entrance separate these areas from the main chamber.

There is no one around. Those who do enter can almost feel the malevolence coming from the black water in the center depression.

Kharyna -

Kharyna sees that Swannie is quite affected by the ordeal she went through inside the Spirit of the Swamp and does not even respond to her sarcasm they so often share as a group.

Kharyna can tell that Swanny is still a bit groggy from the whole ordeal and her words don't get a response.

"I've been better", is all that Swanny will say. She does feel a bit better from being healed.

"I can see that." Kharyna casts a heal spell on her friend and when it is clear that none of the other clerics are heading this way, she will then burn her Web spell (under the cleric list) and cast a CMW on her friend.

Kharyna looks over to Lord Validar who went through the same ordeal as Swannie and despite a slight limp, hardly shows signs of the effects. Were situations different she would enjoy getting to know this warrior better. Unfortunately circumstances would soon be taking them both on different paths. She shook her head slightly and returned to seeing how Swannie was recovering.

A few moments later, Sherwood exits and with a flourish declares that the Shrine is safe to enter. Kharyna will enter, curious as to the contents, but behind the initial warrior group. She will then cast a Detect Magic inside the shrine to see what it identifies.

Surviving the Swamp Monster

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:
Acerion wrote:"Yes, I would be most appreciative of your abilities," Acerion will reply. After he receives the healing spell, Acerion will use his own Detect Evil abilities and relay any information revealed to Validar and the others.
Grondar isn't certain that the healing provided by the one spell is sufficient. If he can get Acerion to hold still long enough, he'll convert Command into Cure Light Wounds and Aid into Cure Moderate Wounds, then cast them both on the paladin.
Sherra wrote:"Thank you for such kind words Grondar," Sherra will reply, smiling at her dwarven friend. "It does kind of swell the pride to know my arrows sent him to his demise." She will laugh lightly, for though she wouldn't normally enjoy bragging, it seems most appropriate right then.
"You are both welcome and deserving, Sherra. That was quite a feat, and quite a victory for us all. It is worth celebrating, and we shall have to do so once we reach somewhere a little more accommodating."

Grondar notes Ivy rushing off to destroy the last of the zombies. While his heart is with her, he feels the need to heal his comrades takes precedence at the moment. Otherwise, he would have been only too willing to join her in that worthy endeavor.
Sherwood wrote:Sherwood catches some of the conversation on how to proceed into the Shrine.

Grondar looks up just as Sherwood enters the shrine, far too late to stop his friend from taking this risk. He looks on in dismay, praying fervently to Berronar for Sherwood's protection.

More hopefully, Jallarzi suceeds in freeing Kieran from the self-proclaimed Lord of Corruption's vile influence. Corley, Ivy and Argent quickly end the unlife of the remaining undead.

The seconds seem to creep by impossibly slowly. Finally, Sherwood reappears - unharmed, thankfully. Apparently, the way inside is now clear.

Grondar stands at the entrance and watches as the others enter the shrine. As they pass, he assesses who might still have need of healing. Acerion should be well on the way to mending, and hopefully the other priests in the group have seen to the others' injuries as well.

Of course, that is only part of his reluctance to enter. Grondar can feel the deep-seated evil of this place; it seems almost to suck at his very soul.

Steeling himself, he enters. Inside, the shrine is pitifully bare. Surprised, Grondar takes a moment to scan the empty room. No altar. No (un)holy symbols. No religious imagery. Just a pit, some putrid liquid and detritus. Even the side rooms are nothing more than bare floors with space for people to sleep. Pathetic.

Grondar will wait for Elspeth to do what she came to do. While he waits, he begins assessing the possibilities for destroying the building entirely. Perhaps by using Soften Earth & Stone and Stone Shape on the structural supports, along with judicious application of my mace, I can bring this heap of garbage down forever... he muses.

Surviving the Swamp Monster

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:
Ivy wrote:"Have at them!", Ivy calls out and grabs her enchanted mace once more. "Don't let any of them get away!"

Unless somehow blocked, Ivy will rush forward and start pounding away on any zombies left in the area. She won't permit any of the foul creatures to escape her wrath!
The sudden shouting startles Kylie; she had thought that this was all over. In moments, however, she realizes what is occuring. Kylie giggles quietly to herself as she watches Ivy to go traipsing off into the swamp after the last few pitiful zombies.
Lilia wrote:"That I can do", Lilia will say. She'll land and use her innate talent to Detect Magic to locate magic items on those we have defeated.
"May I help?" If Lilia agrees, Kylie will use her innate ability to detect magic to help Lilia collect up whatever enchanted items can be found.
Sherwood wrote:Sherwood catches some of the conversation on how to proceed into the Shrine.

"Sherwood, no!" she shouts in alarm, but it is too late. Kylie can only wait in stupefied horror for her uncle Sherwood to emerge. After some time, he does, and Kylie breathes easier. Thank Tymora! She was certainly with him today.

Once Sherwood has indicated that the Shrine is safe to enter, Kylie will do so, though warily. She remains ready to cast Wraithform at a moment's notice, should danger arise. With the overbearing sense of evil in this place, it is hard to believe that no danger remains.

Inside, it is ugly and all-but-empty. Not much of a temple at all. Depressing, really. With nothing much to do, Kylie wanders around, poking through the side rooms with hope of finding something of interest.

Lord Validar -

Validar helps Aswansea to her feet, and she seems to have been strongly affected by the experience inside the Spirit of the Swamp. She barely responds to him and Kharyna is spotted heading this way, so Validar turns his attention to the shrine once more.

Chareos watches as his friend's sword cuts through the interior of the swamp beast emerging from the grime within. Approaching Lord Validar, "It is good to see that you are well. You had us worried for a time," he says with a reassured smile.

"It will take far more than a putrid pile of slime and stink to defeat this Son of Cynalon. I thank you for your concern, but I can assure you that I am 'made of sterner stuff' as the saying goes." He will clasp Chareos on the shoulder briefly before turning his attention elsewhere. "Keep your eyes attentive, my friend. This battle may not yet be ended."

Lord Validar notes the various healing going on and the more he's thought about it, the better he thinks the decision. Something about all this leads him to believe that it's not over yet. The hairs on the back of his neck remain raised, as if some unseen threat still lurks about.

The group moves out and continues their efforts. Some of the group take up positions of guard before he even has a chance to mention it, such as Lilia and Arocken. The young noble barely takes notice of the battle against the remaining zombies. He notes that it is over briefly and since it is relatively unimportant, concentrates on the shrine itself.

Lord Acerion indicates that the Evil that still pervades this entire area remains and that nothing particular can be detected due to the all encompasing nature of the Evil.

"That is what I was afraid of, my friend. I had hoped that Vryxnr was the one behind much of the Evil here, but likely he was nothing more than a lowly pawn in this. Someone corrupted himself and empowered to do another's bidding. His abilities seemed nothing special and the defense of the place was poor in the extreme."

Kylie offers some suggestions on exploring the shrine, and is joined by the fighter-Mage Chareos, when Sherwood speaks up and takes matters into his own hands. A few minutes after entering, Sherwood indicates that the shrine is safe to enter.

Lord Validar will be one of the first to enter, leading the group inside with drawn sword. The place looks as poor on the inside as out and Validar is clearly disappointed that such a threat seems so shabby. The pool of black liquid seems almost alive however, as it seethes with malevolence.

"Elspeth should do her actions now and be done with this vile liquid. Then we will dismantle this foul place, stone by stone if need be. A few of our number should be prepared both inside and out to be ready for any unforseen surprises."

barely a nest..

Sherra:
"You are both welcome and deserving, Sherra. That was quite a feat, and quite a victory for us all. It is worth celebrating, and we shall have to do so once we reach somewhere a little more accomodating."
Sherra will have nothing further to add, and she knows her dwarven friend will probably need to help heal those who were injured. There weren't many of us that were this day, but the few who sustained injuries looked pretty grevious. Thank Tymora it wasn't worse she will say in her thoughts.

Sherwood surprises everyone when he just plunges headlong into the shrine. Nobody rushes in after him, and Lord Acerion is seemingly unable to pinpoint any further evil but it apparently flows all around us. Many tense moments pass, but finally Sherwood emerges once more, no worse for wear.

Sherra is curious about the shrine, even though her combat effectiveness is limited in such circumstances. Still, she follows Validar and the others inside.
Just inside the shrine are several bottles and vials carelessly strewn on the floor. There are half a dozen of these bottles and two have broken from being dropped. The other four are all open and whatever they once held is gone. Dirt and refuse cover much of the chamber's floor
"Potions of invisiblity?" she asks to no one in particular when she spots the broken and empty bottles and vials. The rest of the shrine, except for the black water, is void of anything that resembles comforts, let alone even bare neccessities. "I've seen pirates, bandits and thugs who lived the lives of kings compared to the conditions here," Sherra will comment.

Without much else to do and knowing Elspeth will need to work her magic, Sherra moves back to the entrance where she can ready her bow once more and stand guard should something emerge from the swamp and attempt to stop the cleansing.
