Q Files Updates: January 2003

Post by Spectrum »

The first update for the Q Files has been posted. There is the upgraded version of New Crusaders # 1-4 that now includes my commentary.

Finishing up the Champions portion is Crusaders # 1 & 2 where everything on Q-Link began.

In the D&D section there is The Frontier # 1 & 2, that started my long running D&D game on Q. It's important as portions of it serve as both the background to Spectrum's books and as the backdrop to Terra Nova itself!

Discuss!

Hey gang!

Put up several new posts in the Q Files.

There's Crusaders #3-4 where things finally start to come together and there's the debut of a spinoff title called Crusaders Plus. CPlus starts off with a small Nazgul solo that leads into Crusaders Plus #1-2.

Over in the D&D section, we have Frontier #3-4 as the Seekers face their first combat.

Enjoy!

Greetings all. Well, I have to admit that I was never really as into the Champions game as the Frontier. That was a great game and I am dissappointed that I had to drop out two times. Looking back at what was written, the story was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the price of being on Q-Link was too much for me while in college. Too bad they didn't have unlimited access back then!

I would have to say that I would be MUCH more interested in a D&D game than a Champions MB game. Hard to believe perhaps, but we have plenty to do with Champions already IMHO. I would do a D&D game in an instant probably. Validar was a lot of fun and while I remember the story just a little, I am chomping at the bit to read through these again.

BTW: You may not have noticed it yet, but Specs was ruthless back then. If someone disappeared in the D&D game, they usually were killed. The slaughter was ongoing and brutal at times! It even caused returning a particular person from the dead when they returned after being gone for awhile!

Nothing personal, but the Champs games seem like a cheap sustitute to our current game. Granted at the time, they were often improvements over the first writing we did. So I guess it's a matter of perspective. But I already find myself skimming over the Champs files while reading and re-reading the Frontier. Can anyone say Frontier II? 8)

Yeah, Muskateer did nowhere near as much with online Champs as he was with the Frontier. He was involved for about the first year, before bowing out of Champs. Although he did do some guest shots for me here and there. His appearance as Jack O'Lantern in my live Champs game was quite memorable!

Validar dropped out of sight during the late 20's to around the mid 30's in the game. From there he lasted all the way until Post #100, so he lasted under less than half of the entire run. Stephanie was the only character around for the entire run. Finrod would probably be next, followed by, believe it or not Musky-- Padraig!

As Musky suggested, we've been doing lots with Champs for many years. I used to balance the two before, but its been heavily biased to Champs these last few years. So a change of pace would be nice. Likewise playing with the Q files is a nice change of pace for me from the normal grind.

Oh come now, I wasn't that bad! I mean just because I would have an active PC roster and then a Cannonfodder roster...

Seriously, if someone let me knew they were going to be leaving and had a last request for their PC, I would usually honor it. Or if they said they'd begone for a while for some reason, I would leave them alone. At worst I'd write them out of the main game for a while. However, if they just vanished without a trace and with no word, they were fair game. I think the worst bloodbath I had was taking out 6 former PC's during one massive fight. (The one with the green dragon, Musky.)

There are valid comparisons between the early Q stuff and our even older stuff. Yeah, there was a lot of re-telling of things we already did. I took a while for the Q Champs to come into their own. I'm certainly as proud as my work on the Q stuff as I am for the Old Stuff. Of course, I was there for all of it.

So does anyone think they can put up with Validar??

I did have a lot of fun in the game as a guest star. I remember playing a villain a few times and Jacko was a blast. I remember speaking to one of the players on the phone (Kityana who was in Frontier) and when the subject of playing Jacko came up, she exclaimed, "That was you?!? " There can be no better compliment. :D

There are some great characters in Frontier. I recall my favorites being Finrod, Dalliance, Arafel, Bernice and a few others who I am forgetting their names (Blod?).

Specs wiped people out left and right. Don't let him kid you. I remember the Green Dragon and also there being a few deaths in a raid on a Hextor temple. People came and went so often that it seemed very realistic in the body count. We didn't need many NPCs since it was all going so well.

I would be VERY interested in playing Validar again. Guess I am having a D&D withdrawal. Of course, some version of Jylsera would be interesting too! Anyway, hope everyone enjoys reading these stories, tehy were a lot of fun.

Some other interesting characters that Musky might be forgetting would include Araduin, Arocken, & Dar Thaltus. At least from the time he was around. There was quite a few characters I liked and naturally some that I didn't.

Blod was there too. He used to call Validar "Sir Clang!" And don't forget Zynara's familiar Sheba who used to scare Bernice, and then later, Tania. There was a great deal of humor in their posts as well. No one let Validar forget that one great battlecry of his-- "Soulless Snotbag!" Actually it was SOULLESS SLUG!! But Snotbad isn't bad either.

While Soulless Slug was popular, you did utter Soulless snotbag once too. And everyone noticed. And Blod used it regularly after that. Trust me, I just read that a few days ago.

Validar and Jylsera do exist in the same world...

And don't let him frighten you all. I wasn't that bad--- unless you annoyed me... Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

I did forget Arocken, who I liked and the catch phrase that seemed to go with him: "Gotta keep Arocken all night long." Of course, you have to have some 80's music experience to get that one. I honestly don't remember Araduin and Dar Thaltus (even though he's already appeared!) at all really. It has been a long time.

I forgot about Zynara's snake (what a familiar). I am sure there are a ton of people I will remember once the files get reposted. I already had pleasant reminders of Finrod, Arafel and Dalliance.

Looking forward to more! 8)

Actually, I was more partial to "Can't stop Arocken!" :)

Araduin hasn't appeared yet. Deslock (Ah yes, good ol' Des!) was his player and he and Bernice got on rather spendly. In fact it was his leg she used to wrap herself around at first. I recall that now.

My all time favorite bit was Bernie getting ready to take a bath back at the mansion and finding Sheba coiled up in the tub...

Yeah, you're gonna have to tell us some of these backstories with Arafel. There's stuff hinted at in the files that you never shared with the rest of us. From what I've seen so far, Dalliance didn't seem to like Validar much. Unless there was also contact between you two that I'm not aware of.

The bit with Sheba, Bernice and the tub was quite humorous.

I remember Bernice hiding behind Validar once or twice too. Never too fond of Halflings (I used to refer to them as half-things), I had a fond place in my heart for Bernice.

Dalliance and Validar did not seem to get along well, but I liked her posting style. It was unfortunate she didn't last longer.

As for Arafel and Validar, yes, there was a level of flirting between them. We spoke a few times on the phone and I think we exchanged e-mail about the characters behind the scenes, but have to see more of the files to remember honestly.
