New Frontiers #37

The squad of mounted basilisks near the swamp has been defeated and the riders freed from being controlled. Captain Yorick and his men will set off back to Rennydale and home. That just leaves Kieran behind.
Lyonessa tries to tell just how well Kieran knows her sister, but is uncertain. "Thank you for telling me what you know. I am worried about her even more now, but it is good to hear news regardless. I know she was still alive when you last saw her, and that is a comfort."
"I fear for my friends as well. Our band was small and went by the name of Rathlar's Raiders. We numbered only five and had hoped to slip into Ardelphia without notice. Scout around a bit, learn the lay of the land, and perhaps score a sizeable haul of treasure. Alas, things did not go as planned. The last I knew all of them were alive. But now, many months later, I cannot say for certain."
Lyonessa will pause a moment before continuing, "Were you two close? Maybe you wish to go with us to help find her?" Her question is repeated by Validar a moment later.
"We were friendly, but not close in the romantic sense."
Validar will approach Kieran as well. "I overheard your comment that you adventured with Lyonessa's sister. You are welcome to travel with us as we hope to locate her in the course of our adventures. Also as you are not of Rennydale, perhaps it would be safer than traveling alone."
Kieran will consider the offer for a moment. "I would very much like that. It is my plan to find my missing colleagues in Ardelphia. However, I do not have any way to free them much as you have done for me. And as you say, these lands are too dangerous to cross alone. I know the way through the swamp and how to reach the Shrine where your enemy lies. I can lead the way. The trip takes only a few hours."

Elsewhere, the scouts enter the swamp. Jallarzi and Kharyna fly overhead on their griffons. Sherwood joins them in the form of an eagle. They return less than an hour later.

"The shrine is a few miles inside the swamp, close to the center", Sherwood reports. "The going looks like it'll be slow and I would concur with Kieran's assessment that the journey will take a few hours. The shrine is nothing special. The whole building is only 50' x 100' in size. It sits on a dry part of the swamp, perhaps four times larger than the shrine itself. A few men were spotted. But no beasts. I also noticed a good spot to set up our night's camp as well. It's about twenty minutes walk into the swamp. A nice tight stretch of path with danger on either side. There's very little room for the enemy to set up an ambush if they do track us. We should get moving and reach the spot before night falls."

GM Notes:

The group is able to reach the spot Sherwood picked out and set up the Mansion without incident. The swamp itself is a source of evil. Acerion picked up on this earlier, but now that you are inside the swamp its noticeable by all. It makes each of you very uncomfortable. There is no breeze inside the swamp and the smell is somewhat overpowering.

The path to the shrine is a long and narrow one. Travel by horseback is limited to single file until you reach the shrine itself. Now is the time to make your plan of attack and decide your final spell lists.

Now what?

Kylie:
Argent wrote:"Perhaps, but Feather Fall has its own uses beyond being memorized in conjunction with a fly spell. There are plenty of times where an adventuring may find themselves trapped somewhere up high or falling. It could save your life."
"Certainly. The spell has plenty of its own uses - as I've made use of the ring I wear. However, it still seems like poor spell design for one spell to all-but-require another in order to be used safely. Now that you've pointed it out, I can see that it is possible to sense the end of the spell and adjust accordingly. On the other hand, I can anticipate some situations where that may not be sufficient. Plus, some spellcasters may not know the Feather Fall spell, which puts them at risk. If the spell were designed to deposit the caster on the nearest solid footing before the spell ended, that seems more practical to me."

Kylie joins those scouting the area on foot. An oppressive feeling of unmitigated evil hangs over them like a pall, causing Kylie to shiver beneath her cloak. Fortunately, it turns out to be a short mission, and they soon locate a suitable camp site. By time they return to the rest of the group, Sherwood, Jallarzi and Kharyna are already addressing the group with what they found.

Gathering up her gear, Kylie helps the group move and get set up in Jallarzi's mansion in the swamp. As usual, she turns her attention to her spell books once everyone is situated.

At some point later in the evening, Kylie comes running out of her room, shouting excitedly. "I get it! I understand!" She soon tracks down Jallarzi and Argent. "I figured it out!" she says breathlessly. "I don't know if your training with the Fly spell pushed me over the edge or not, Argent, but I finally understand the deeper mysteries. I even figured out a brand new spell, called Item!

"Oh, I need to go dig through Arkane's spell book," Kylie says before turning and running off. She collects Arkane's spell book, as well as the one donated by Sherwood, and returns to her room. Hours of study and transcribing is rewarded with a significant number of spells added to her personal spellbook.

Finally turning in, Kylie gets several hours of good, restful sleep. Apparently her joy at advancing so far offsets the malevolent aura of the swamp. She rises early and spends the remaining hours preparing her spells for the battle ahead.

Sherwood wrote:"I think I've grown far too accustomed to working alone as opposed to with a large group such as this. I tend to keep my thoughts and plan of action to myself at times. The fault is not entirely yours, Grondar."
"That's okay, Sherwood," Grondar says, "it's good to know that you're nearly as fallible as the rest of us..."
Sherra wrote:Sherra drowns in a fit of laughter that she can't bring under control for quite some time. She feels guilty, and a bit embarrassed, but thankfully Grondar is laughing as well. Finally she's able to regain her composure, but the laugh was definitely refreshing. She gives the dwarf a hug and says, "Well if it makes any difference, you're the wisest and most noble turnip I've ever met."
Grondar joins Sherra in a hearty laugh, wiping a bit of moisture from the edge of his eye. "Thank you, my friend. Perhaps I should have that graven on my tombstone - wisest and most noble turnip. What say you?"
Validar wrote:"That would make using a two-handed sword a challenge indeed. And yet, were it to come to that, I still would bet my family's castle on the outcome."
Grondar nods agreeably. "I see your point, as I'm sure would they."
"You may yet get your wish, my good friend. Afterall, swamps are often homes to black dragons. And my guess is that if the proximity of this Lord of Corruption has not tainted everything in the swamp, the creatures who live here will be a natural defense at the least. At worst, the inhabitants will be actively defending the shrine. We may have to fight our way to the shrine first."

"We do not know what to expect and it is important that we do not become overconfident due to the lack of challenge we have experienced so far. We must be quick to strike the acolytes down and nto allow them any surprises. As for this Lord of Corruption, he will not be a threat for much longer."
Grondar listens as Validar discusses the situation with Lord Corley, scratching his beard in thought. The following day could bring many unexpected challenges, and they will have to deal with them as best they may.

Validar then turns back to their discussion. "I agree. We need to strike hard and fast. I believe we will suffer fewer casualties that way."

While some scout out a location for their camp, Grondar sees to getting those heading back to Rennydale safely on their way. He then joins the rest of the group on guard until the scouts return.
Kieran wrote:Kieran will consider the offer for a moment. "I would very much like that. It is my plan to find my missing colleagues in Ardelphia. I know the way through the swamp and how to reach the Shrine where your enemy lies. I can lead the way. The trip takes only a few hours."
The crusty dwarf approaches the new warrior. "Welcome to the Guardians of the Light, Kieran. I am Grondar, acolyte of our Revered Mother, Berronar Truesilver. It is a pleasure to meet you. If you need anything, just ask."
Sherwood wrote:"The shrine is a few miles inside the swamp, close to the center", Sherwood reports. Grondar listens carefully to Sherwood's report. It sounds as though they should be as secure as can be for the night. Collecting his mount and equipment, Grondar joins the others in moving to the new spot and settling in. Fortunately, Jallarzi creates her wonderfully comfortable lodging. He eats a good meal, performs his rituals, then settles in for the night.

Some time later, Grondar is awoken by shouting. "Huh? Wha-?" Stumbling sleepily out of his room, he wonders at first if they are under attack. It turns out to just be that excitable half-elven girl, so he returns to his bed.

Come morning, Grondar spends time in worship and asks Berronar for her blessings for the battle ahead. He then emerges from his room and eats a light, healthy meal before joining the others in last-minute preparations for the battle ahead.

Ivy:

Sherwood returns from his scouting and the group prepares to enter the swamp. Ivy will ride up beside Lord Validar and those near the front of the column.

"Lord Validar, I should be near the front of the column once we enter into the swamp. I can sense the presence of undead in the same manner that Lord Acerion can note the evil in men's souls. Furthermore, when we do come across zombies and other undead I can attempt to turn them right away."

Ivy can't help but feel the smell of evil in the air. It is distracting but she tries to focus on sensing the presence of undead. Ivy is noticeably relieved and tired from her exertions upon entering the mansion. She'll relax and turn in early, but will not shirk her duties in preparing the evening meal.

Jallarzi:

The Lady Sallavarian had been relaxing in one of the spacious chambers inside the Mansion chatting with those around her when Kylie bursts in.
"Then congratulations are in order, Kylie. I'm very proud of you."

Jallarzi will answer immediate questions that her youngest apprentice might have before she runs off to research more spells.

If the spell were designed to deposit the caster on the nearest solid footing before the spell ended, that seems more practical to me."
"On the contrary, Kylie, the spell does precisely what it sets out to do: make the target fly. Landing safely is in the hands of the flyer. Magic itself is a force to be used and directed. It is not sentient nor can it make choices for you. It is a tool and a means to an end. It is up to the wielder to use it safely and properly. Should a spell expire while it is still needed, then it is the caster who has erred. Magic, just like life, has risks to it. Complaining about the spell not being designed properly accomplishes nothing. The caster must be aware of how the spells they cast are going to work."

"I would imagine that it is possible to create a Fly spell that converts into a Feather Fall upon expiration. I would also imagine that it would be significantly higher level and neither one of us could make use of it. So we use the current version and incur the risk that goes with."

"I do have to find it ironic that someone who used to take all types of chances and risks before coming to Jallarzi, complains about spells being too risky", Argent concludes with a grin.

At some point later in the evening, Kylie comes running out of her room, shouting excitedly. "I get it! I understand!" She soon tracks down Jallarzi and Argent. "Glad to be of service", Argent will say with a smile. "Come see me after you finish with those books and I'll let you see the spells I have."

In spite of the overwhelming presence of evil, Argent does try to be upbeat. She'll pitch in with the kitchen chores as she is something of a skilled cook. Later she'll relax with and chat with those around her.

For a moment, Sherwood's normally stoic expression fades and it looks like as if Grondar's words had pierced him as if they were a weapon. It lasts only a moment before the usual look returns.

"Yes, it must be a relief…", Sherwood mutters before walking off.

"Thank you, Jallarzi!" Kylie replies enthusiastically, giving her mentor a hug. "I really have you to thank most of all for taking me in and giving me a good foundation in the mystic mysteries." Kylie is too excited to really buckle down and talk shop with Jallarzi right now, but no doubt she will have plenty of questions in the days to come.
Argent wrote:"Glad to be of service", Argent will say with a smile. "Come see me after you finish with those books and I'll let you see the spells I have."
Kylie almost vibrates with excitement. "I most certainly will, Argent! And I've added a few to my repertoire since you last looked - you might find a few worth adding to your own selection." She disappears back into the confines of her room after buzzing around the magical mansion like a hornet on speed.

Kylie is happy that Ivy and Argent have taken up the task of making dinner this evening, as she is far to engrossed in her discoveries to focus on anything else.

Grondar cants his head to one side, puzzled by Sherwood's strange reaction to his jest. Can the mage really believe that he is as perfect as the gods? Is it so hard for him to accept the thought of only being a little better than the rest of them? Everyone makes mistakes; surely someone as intelligent as Sherwood must know that?

VALIDAR -

Validar will wish the men returning to Rennydale well, as the aerial scouts do some reconniasance. They return in about an hour.

"That is very good. We should be able to proceed without much impediment to the camp location. Lead on."

Ivy - "Lord Validar, I should be near the front of the column once we enter into the swamp. I can sense the presence of undead in the same manner that Lord Acerion can note the evil in men's souls. Furthermore, when we do come across zombies and other undead I can attempt to turn them right away."

"That is quite true. For the moment, I see no need to set our riding order for a short 20 minute ride. Your presence near the front should satisfy the protection. In the morning we will have a prepared order of riding."

The group makes it to the camp location and sets up the Mansion. The next morning, everyone is prepared for the push against the shrine. Validar ignores the stench of evil which is all about them.

Our riding order will be as follows:
Sherwood
Ivy
Kieran
Lilia
Elspeth
Jallarzi
Gwenith
Corley
Talia
Laucian
Aswansea
Argent
Po
Grondar
Sherra
Acerion
Kharyna
Chareos
Kylie
Lara
Lyonessa
Validar
Arocken

With the thick swamp, the griffon riders are not as useful, so everyone will ride in file. Once we near the shrine, some of the scouting types will go forward in advance, leaving one ranger with the main group. Perhaps with aerial coverage if necessary.

"We need to know what we are up against before we can commit to an assault. However, for such a small building, we should be able to assault en masse. I would like to know if there are multiple arrival paths at the shrine, or only one."

Acerion:

Acerion goes over the riding order as Validar reveals it. It seems sound enough even though the length of it will stretch over quite a long piece of ground.

He will walk up and clasp a hand on Validar's armored shoulder and say, "Looks like you won't be getting your blade dirty on this one. If there's anything left by the time I get there, I'll try to leave you a little something." The last will be with an easy grin.

Acerion knows the seriousness of the situaition, but sees no harm in keeping the mood light.

Laucian

He makes his way among the others, being hard pressed to push the feeling of dread from him. Once the Dwelling is conjured Laucian tends to his weapons and armor then relaxes for the evening by a fireplace.
He will talk to any who wishes to talk.

When the Riding order comes to pass, Laucian is suprised to see that he is near the middle/rear of the column but quickly regains his composure.

When the time comes to bunk he will do his daily rituals and prayers to Ehlonna. He will ask for added guidance in the days to come.

Chareos

As we make our way to the camp site Chareos can't help but feel his body being plagued by some evil. He tries to steel himself the best he can and moves on with the group.

He watches as Jallazri conjures their dwelling for the night and enters. He will make ready his equipment. Once finished he will take out his quarterstaff and move to a unoccupied area. He knows he may come into melee in this coming battle and he has been forsaking his training. Taking his Q staff in hand he will begin to go through his routine and practicestriking and defending himself against unseen opponents.

He will then take a seat and flip through his tome and speak with anyone who wishes to. Afterward he will study his spells and go to bed early in the hopes of avoiding a restless sleep.

Argent:

The Invoker looks around at the others inside Jallarzi's Marvelous Mansion.

"Boy, what somber group!", she concludes. "You'd have thought we lost the battle to come by the way we're acting here."

"Sure it looks like it'll be a nasty battle against the forces of the Dark One, but there's always hope. Speaking for myself, I just hope that these zombies are of the ordinary variety. Back in my early days with the Company, we ran into this nutty necromancer calling himself the Zombie Master. Let me tell you, he was exactly what he advertised! He had zombies, ogre zombies, rust monster zombies, goblin zombies, and so on. That was a very harrowing adventure, but we still survived against great odds. Old ZM is no longer with us and I am."

(Argent does leave out the part in her story where she ran from the zombie lair frightened for her very life. Can't reveal everything!)

"I do have a question for our fearless leaders. Since this path is so narrow, do you think it wise to ride our horses to this shrine? I mean on foot we would take up less space. Perhaps it would even be more prudent for me to ride near the end of the column. Once things get going I'll be using a Fly spell to get around the battle, so me up and abandoning my horse in the middle of the column is going to cause problems."

Argent's spell strategy is to cast Fly on herself as we near the shrine and then Mirror Image once there. When the battle begins, she'll fly off away from the others and keep herself around 100 yards away from her intended targets. (Around the maximum range of her combat spells. Spell list has been updated.)

Ivy:

Ivy can't help but feel the anxiety that comes from the night before a battle. The fact that undead are expected to be encountered puts her even more on edge. The priestess hatred for the unliving becomes palatable to all present.

Argent's words about her past encounter with zombies does bring Ivy back for a time.

"I've not heard of monstrous zombies the likes of what you speak before," Ivy will say with concern in her voice. "Zombies are typically regular beings, but using larger things does make sense to those demented enough to animate the dead. Regardless, I shall destroy them!"

Next morning, Ivy will ride behind Sherwood where indicated. She'll go back and forth, scanning each side of the path for the presence of undead.

(Ivy's spell list remains unchanged.)

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden is surprised, but pleased to discover that she's near the front of the procession. Argent's concern over what to do about her mount does resonant in Lilia.

"Indeed, that is a concern that I share as well. Typically, I would use Alter Self to grown slyph-like wings to gain altitude to safely cast spells and fire arrows. My horse would be left behind and be potentially in the way. Unless you have some other strategy in mind for myself."

Realizing the graveness of this situation, Lilia will pay attention to the strategy talk and learn her role in the battle to come. Before entering the battle, she'll cast Alter Self and Shield upon herself.

Lyonessa:

with Laucian:

Laucian looks on in understanding as Lyonessa's features are torn between worry and relief. Feeling as though his comrade may need some support he approaches and gives her a half smile as she waits for her answers.

Lyonessa smiles in response to the support Laucian shows her. She feels much more at ease with him close.

with Kieran:

"We were friendly, but not close in the romantic sense."

She nods her understanding, and really has nothing more to say on it.

"That would be most appreciative, Kieran. We both can look forward to a reunion with those who matter to us."

Lyonessa is glad that he will be helping out and traveling with us. Even a glimpse into her sister's recent travels is better than no word at all. She surpresses a desire to let fear eat at her and wonders if it is not just the touch of the land that bothers her so.

current:

As everyone is settling in for the night, Lyonessa picks up the mood of everyone, laced with dread and very solemn. She finds a decent spot, not knowing how the magical dwelling will affect acoustics and begins to play. She chooses a slow piece, one that is quiet but to remove the melancholy. It's uplifting tones subtle but noticeable to those who wish to listen for it. To any others, it will not be distracting to those who have other duties this night.

Once those who desire sleep begin to head off, she will sing softly well into the night. "Rest not upon beds that troubled sleep bring, but cradles from the stars find thee thy rest. Fey song drip like sweet honey upon thee, carry away upon hooves of unicorn. Let none pass through harm, felt far from this plain, nor let it bring burden to thoughts of the day. Thy blessing is light upon yon brows sweet goddess, for that we forget all but what be seen from a child..."

VALIDAR -

After Validar gives the riding order for the swamp ride to the shrine, he listens for comments. There is a look of surprise on some faces on their location.

"I have the rangers spread throughout the group in case there is something to cause us to be split up. Furthermore, the fighters and mages have been split up and spread throughout and those who are less of direct combatants have more able fighters near them. This way, no one is at a danger from any surprises."

Acerion goes over the riding order as Validar reveals it. It seems sound enough even though the length of it will stretch over quite a long piece of ground.

"Then it saves me the unpleasant task of cleaning the zombies fluids from my blade," Validar will respond with a smile of his own. "I have a strange feeling about this battle," Validar will then say, turning more serious. "Either this will be much easier than we expect or much more difficult and I fear it may be the latter."

Kieran will report that there is only one main entrance to the shrine. There are numerous intersecting paths, but only one goes to the shrine.

"That is unfortunate and does seem to bog us down a bit. We shall have to make do with a single approach in one rank file."

The Invoker Argent looks around at the others inside Jallarzi's Marvelous Mansion.

"Boy, what somber group!", she concludes. "You'd have thought we lost the battle to come by the way we're acting here."

Validar will approach the Invoker. "It is good that you can keep your spirits up about you, as well, Argent. Some of us get more morose as a battle beckons. Some have nervous energy that needs to be worked off. For me, the itch of battle is strong but it only really grips me in the moment before the first clash is made. In the meantime, I try not to get too excited nor too melancholy. Perhaps you would care to tell me more of your adventures in the Frontier?"

Lilia soon after also speaks up and mentions her flight abilities. Validar considers for a moment. "You are correct that horses only seem to make this a more cumbersome assault and one that is strung out even more. Very well, I concur that we should leave the horses. One of the mages can conjure a lesser magickal edifice and Po will stay with the horses inside. In that way, our mounts are safe and we will have less of us diverted to caring for them. Anyone else who wishes to remain behind of course may also do so."

Validar will note Argent's tactic as well as Lilia's for the upcoming assault.

"Our file order will remain the same with the extraction of Po. We should be able to array ourselves for battle better without the mounts as well. At the moment, we still do not know what to expect at the shrine. Our initial tactics will be for those in the front to move in, search for possible foes using all abilities at their disposal. Those who have flight abilities can use them to spread out and gain alternate attack angles. We do not want to be bunched up. A main group of fighters will form the vanguard before the shrine. Perhaps Grondar and some of the other clerics can cast advantageous spells on them."

"We need to keep Elspeth safe and hence her position by Jallarzi. Corley is also well positioned on the approach with Gwenith for protection of Elspeth. I would also recommend as many magickal defenses as possible to be ready. We do not know what powers this Lord of Corruption will assault us with."

As Lyonessa begins her melodies and soft singing, Validar will ready hsi armor and weapons and go over the battle plans in his head. He would prefer more reconnaissance and knowledge of what they are to face, but that seems to be a luxury they shall not have this day. The will have to have options and then there is the case of Elspeth. If they are unable to succeed on their own, perhaps she will be as successful as the stories say.

Validar will meet with anyone who is in the common areas, talking and discussing varying topics. He does not show a sign of nervousness or anxiety at the upcoming battle.

Talia:

The dark haired thief will almost gulp audibly when it is revealed that she's going to be riding so near the front of the precession. For a few moments Talia considers what to do, including taking her concerns to Kharyna. However, more conversation reveals that the horses are going to be left behind with Po.

"I think I'll help Po with the horses", Talia says trying to conceal her nervousness. "I'm not sure that I could be much help in this type of battle."
I shall find the safest path.

"Why of course, Lord Validar", Argent says with an easy smile. "Come, let us sit and relax while we speak. It will be a pleasant opportunity to get to know each other better."

After picking out a nice place to relax and converse, Argent will launch into her tale.

"As you might already know, I'm also an apprentice of Jallarzi. When it came my turn to leave the nest, it was suggested that I join up with other adventures that Sharadin was gathering for a quest. So, I came to Gateway and with these other adventurers formed the Company of the Sword. It was our task to reach Karn's Keep and locate the Sword of Doom, an ancient artifact of reputedly great power."

"We traveled north from Gateway accompanying a caravan to Gerald's Fort. En route we fought off a band of hobgoblins and safely escorted the caravan to its destination."

"Next we continued on northward. Along the way we came across a strange and twisted evil forest. In the midst of this forest was a lone Temple of Ehlonna. We managed to reach the temple and met an old priestess. She told us that a being known as the Zombie Master had done the damage to the forest and that he operated out of a graveyard a short ride away."

"The Company entered the graveyard, but we were unprepared for the sheer number of zombies that were there and were forced to regroup. After formulating a new strategy, we returned to the graveyard and dispatched the horde of zombies. We penetrated the mausoleum and discovered the entrance to an the underground lair of the zombie master."

"This is where we encountered numerous monster zombies. The battle was fierce and many a good companion fell in the battle, but the Company was victorious. The Crystal Ball that I possess came from the Zombie Master lair."

"After dealing with the Zombie Master, we returned to the Forest Temple. There the priestess said that Ehlonna was going to give us a reward for our service. Next day, a strange mist teleported us to outside Karn's Keep."

"As if that wasn't enough of a surprise, the keep itself was gigantic in stature! The structure appears to have been built by and for giants! It appears abandoned, but strangely enough there was a man and a woman there. They introduced themselves as Corley and Ariel."

Argent can't help but give a quick glance in Lord Corley's direction, but then quickly looks back to Lord Validar. Surely them both having the same name is only a coincidence.

"Anyway, they were monsters the likes that I had yet to seen and were defeated in a great struggle. With them gone, we began to settle into the keep and unravel its mysteries."

"Given my ability to comprehend the Kelnish writings, I played a significant role in this task. I came to the conclusion that the Sword of Doom was not a weapon in the traditional sense of the word. It appears that in reality it was the name of a flying ship Karn used to travel and adventure. The story of the Sword of Doom had been misunderstood and changed with the passing years until it was no longer the truth."

"At any rate, we decided to press on. It appeared that Keln used the Pillar Artifact to hide the Sword of Doom. He set up a series of quest that once complete would allow you to finally reach the resting place of the Sword of Doom."

"We decided to bypass Karn's Quest and head directly to where the Sword of Doom was hidden. To that end, we took the first of Karn's Quests as it would take us closer to our ultimate destination. However, Lady Fate had other ideas."

"The Pillars took us to a mountainous area on the former Island of Neverwinter where it was quite wintry. We were forced into a battle with a white dragon and managed to drive it off. The weather was awful and it was bitterly cold. Reluctantly we returned to Karn's Keep."

"We continued to explore the keep and managed to penetrate several areas that had been magically protected from intrusion. Using magic, I entered the private chambers that had once belonged to a sorceress. Much of my current clothing and magic items came from her. However, the sorceress was still around and her spirit possessed me for a short time, but we managed to destroy her in the end."

"Right after that, a force of Hextorites attacked. They had been dispatched on the very same quest by the enemy. We bested them after a fierce and brutal battle. Just after that was when the Seekers appeared in our midst."

"Not much more to add at this point. The two groups decided to join forces to continue the quest. Some of us declined and I was among them. I actually did leave Karn's Keep, but Sharadin quickly tracked me down to help him research the Pillar Artifact and that's what I had been doing. It was a bit more dangerous then I had first anticipated and I had a 'accident' involving the pillars. It is our theory that the pillars are breaking down and becoming unreliable. It has been decided to not use them anymore if possible."

"I was recovering from my accident when Sherwood and Jallarzi stopped by. One thing led to another and here I am! That's pretty much all of my experiences in the Frontier lands."

"So, Lord Validar, perhaps you can tell me a bit more about yourself?"

Validar wrote:"You are correct that horses only seem to make this a more cumbersome assault and one that is strung out even more. Very well, I concur that we should leave the horses. One of the mages can conjure a lesser magickal edifice and Po will stay with the horses inside. In that way, our mounts are safe and we will have less of us diverted to caring for them. Anyone else who wishes to remain behind of course may also do so."
"A sound decision, Lord Validar. Let us make things easier for ourselves and harder for our enemies."

Argent will continue to chat with Validar for as long as he wishes and will listen to Lyonessa's playing, hoping that it will soothe some of the nervousness tonight.

Argent wrote:"Boy, what somber group!", she concludes.

Grondar, in fact, seems pretty much his usual self, showing no signs of being unusually (for him) somber. He does seem quite determined, however. Argent's tale catches his attention and he listens quietly.

"Quite a tale you have there, Argent. I have not encountered quite that great a variety of undead. It would certainly be a challenge, testing Berronar's gifts against such strange adversaries." When Argent proceeds to tell Validar more of her adventures, Grondar settles himself nearby and listens to her stories, seeing it as an opportunity for good, wholesome entertainment.
Argent wrote:"I do have a question for our fearless leaders. Since this path is so narrow, do you think it wise to ride our horses to this shrine? I mean on foot we would take up less space. Lilia wrote:"Indeed, that is a concern that I share as well. Typically, I would use Alter Self to grown slyph-like wings to gain altitude to safely cast spells and fire arrows. My horse would be left behind and be potentially in the way. Unless you have some other strategy in mind for myself."
Validar wrote:Lilia soon after also speaks up and mentions her flight abilities. Validar considers for a moment. "I do have a few spells available that I would be happy to share with others," Grondar says in reply. "Only two of them can affect more than one person, however."

As they make their last-minute preparations in the morning, Grondar approaches Sherra. "How are you feeling this morning, my friend? Are you ready for the battle before us?"

Kylie:

Having been preoccupied the previous night, it is only as she is preparing in the morning that she learns of the decision to leave the animals behind. In truth, she is disappointed, as she enjoys riding and appreciates having a fast means of fleeing nearby should it be needed.

As they get lined up to start on their way, Kylie approaches Chareos, whom she has been placed next to in the order. As he is also a mage, she feels some connection to the warrior. "How are you doing this morning, Chareos? I must admit that I feel both a sense of excitement and fear at the prospect of today's events. I gained some wondrous new spells last night, which have given me greater confidence, yet I can't but wonder if they'll be sufficient against such a fearsome foe."

Post Continued:

After securing the horses in Sherwood's Magical Cabin, the Guardians continue on deeper into the swamp on foot. The deeper the group moves into the swamp, the warmer it becomes and more intense the feeling of dread and evil. It is very humid and sweat comes easily just from walking. Brush and reeds line the pathway. Great broad cypress trees laden with moss rise up to block out the sun. There is no breeze and the stench is most unpleasant.

Sherwood leads the way, occasionally conferring with Kieran when a choice of path comes up. For those following it becomes harder to focus on the task at hand. The mind wanders and the water reserves are being consumed at a greater than normal rate. The standing water in the swamp is not frozen due to the unnatural warmth of the place. It is covered with a sheen of mold and scum.

This deep in the swamp the entire place radiates intense evil to Acerion, making that sense almost useless. Ivy attempts to locate undead but has yet to spot any.

Sometime later, Sherwood brings the procession to a halt. Word is passed down the line that you have reached the path that leads to the shrine, although it cannot be seen through the thick trees. You're minutes away from the shrine.

As you move down the path you can see portions of a structure ahead between the trees. The shrine appears to be have originally been constructed of stone, but is now covered in moss giving it a sickly green color. There is a single entrance.

Suddenly the path widens and the obscuring cypress trees fall away. The area around the shrine is mostly open. A figure in black robes can be seen in the distance near the front entrance.

He calls out, "Welcome adventurers. I've been expecting you. You will join us or die!"

GM Notes:

And now the fun begins!

A Swamp combat map is now up in the map section of the New Frontiers Reference page. Vryxnr's location is noted, but the adventurers are not. The front of the precession is just off the map on the trail at the bottom of the map.

The trail you are one averages about 10' wide, making it possible to move three across in places. It is also slightly elevated above the swamp. There's a small slope of around 2' along the sides of the path to the swampy waters on either side.

Ivy will detect the presence of undead to either side of the path, presumably underneath the scum covered swampy waters and on the small island the shrine sits up. The undead ahead must still be buried in the ground as they cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Other than Vryxnr, no living creature can be seen, although you cannot see inside the Shrine or behind it. Who knows what other threats are concealed within the swamp itself?

The small break before you reached the swamp would have been an ideal spot to activate any combat preparatory spells.

Now what?

Grondar:

As the burden of evil rises, Grondar begins to quietly recite dwarven scripture to himself. He trusts in Berronar to keep him safe, but the recitation helps calm his nerves and maintain his focus. The stench assails his nose, and he does his best to ignore it, though part of him feels like vomitting.

Since he is near the middle of the group, Grondar watches to both sides for any sign of attack. He carries his crossbow with a bolt loaded and ready to fire. Fortunately, the trip to within sight of the temple passes without incident.

Sherwood calls a halt, and Grondar can see glimses of the malodorous shrine through the vegetation. Still, he has things to do during this all-too-brief respite. First, Grondar approaches Sherra. "Friend Sherra, I have a spell that I have saved specifically for you. It should provide you with a bit of extra protection during this battle. May I share Berronar's blessing with you?" If she agrees, Grondar will cast Protection from Evil on his friend. If she refuses, he will offer it to Kylie. Unfortunately, none of his other spells last long enought to be worth casting so far before the battle begins.

Soon, they start forward again. In mere moments, they enter a clearing which leads all the way to the front of the temple. The area seems a perfect place for a battle... or an ambush. Grondar scans the area, but finds only one opponent, the Corrupter himself! A snarl escapes Grondar's lips as he eyes the reeking blackguard. "As Berronar is my judge, it is you who shall die this day," Grondar growls. "You have my oath on that, miscreant."

Glancing over at Validar, Grondar awaits their orders. If it were up to him, they would split into their three groups, with the first and second circling in a pincer focussed on the Corrupter and the third holding the rear with their long-range attacks. However, it is not his decision and Grondar knows that Validar's long experience will provide a viable plan.

Kylie:

With Sherwood in the lead, the Guardians press on into the swamp. In truth, Kylie is glad to be near the back, as the oppressive sense of evil in this place is giving her the willies. She walks with an arrow nocked and ready, frequently turning her head to scan the trail behind them for threats from that direction. As she looks about, she notes that others seem to be discomfitted by the smell of this place. While it is certainly unpleasant, having grown up in Elcadan's slums, she is somewhat inured to such things.

The trip seems to take forever, yet is only a matter of a few hours. When Sherwood calls a halt, Kylie is greatly relieved. She has been feeling terribly tense since they started, and this gives her a chance to unwind a bit.

As they prepare for the final approach to the shrine, Kylie casts Shield on herself as an initial defense, as it has the longest duration. [If Sherra refuses Grondar's spell, Kylie will gladly accept it.]

Soon they ride into sight of the fetid temple and are greeted by the Corrupter. Ice chills run down Kylie's back at the sound of his voice. An impulse to flee sweeps through her, but Kylie manages to squash it.

She only hopes that Validar has a great plan...

Sherra:
As they make their last-minute preparations in the morning, Grondar approaches Sherra. "How are you feeling this morning, my friend? Are you ready for the battle before us?"
"I am quite rested," Sherra will reply to her friend's question. "I believe Lyonessa's songs carried me off to a very peaceful sleep indeed. I am, however, anxious to get underway and see an end to the vile taint that has plagued the land."
"I think I'll help Po with the horses", Talia says trying to conceal her nervousness. "I'm not sure that I could be much help in this type of battle."
Sherra will embrace Talia briefly before she departs, understanding the reasoning her fellow thief has offered. "We shall return soon enough," she promises with a small smile.

The walk is quite ominous, but she does her best to shrug off the feelings that creep across her skin and keeps her bow at the ready. Keeping her eyes moving, Sherra remains alert to a possible encounter from either side. Eventually the procession halts and Sherra knows that our destination must have been reached.
First, Grondar approaches Sherra. "Friend Sherra, I have a spell that I have saved specifically for you. It should provide you with a bit of extra protection during this battle. May I share Berronar's blessing with you?"
Sherra smiles warmly at her friend, "Of course I will take the blessing and I appreciate the extra protection it will provide." Sherra will keep her bow ready and move into position after receiving Grondar's spell. She will keep vigilant and wait for Sherwood and Validar's orders.

Laucian makes himself ready for the trails of the day and begins to make for his horse, but recalls the earlier orders. He leaves Starfire to Kieran's hands and strokes his horse's head. "I won't be long my friend," he says in elvish.

As the march goes underway Laucian removes his bow and watches through the gloomy air for possible targets but the march proves uneventful. Soon the "parade" comes to a halt and the Lord of corruption is seen apparently alone. He knocks an arrow to his bow and begins to watch the trees for any unusual movement.
Before the battle commences he wil cast his bless spell.

I gained some wondrous new spells last night, which have given me greater confidence, yet I can't but wonder if they'll be sufficient against such a fearsome foe."

"As well as one can be, given the task at hand. And you?" he says with a grin. " That is good to hear. I prey they serve you well. We shall see how formidable they are in time. Keep these thoughts to the rear of your mind for they do not bode well to think on before battle. It will rattle your nerve and plant a seed within yourself and you may doubt yourself when we need you most. We have a fine group here. We will do well this day."

As the Lord of Corruption makes his apparent speech, He calls out, "Welcome adventurers. I've been expecting you. You will join us or die!"

"Where did I hear that one before. Come let us take care of this souless windbag."

He mentions to the others near him. "I have a spell that will greatly add us, if there are no objections of course?" Depending on those around him answer he will Cast Protection from Evil 10' if space is adequate to do so. If space is limited he will wait with lightning rod in hand for orders.

VALIDAR -

(Will respond to Argent's talk, but have to skip it for the moment.)

"I think I'll help Po with the horses", Talia says trying to conceal her nervousness. "I'm not sure that I could be much help in this type of battle."

"Very well. The task will be easier and not so tedious with another hand in it." Validar does not have time to consider the woman's motives, nor does he have the inclination with other more important tasks at hand.

"A sound decision, Lord Validar. Let us make things easier for ourselves and harder for our enemies."

"That is always the desire. I would like to have every hand available against this foe, so whatever maximizes that is a good decision."

Grondar listens to the discussion, then nods as Validar comes to a decision. "That seems a wise choice, Lord Validar. Personally, I'm much more maneuverable on foot," he says with a smile.

"Indeed that is true. You will be valuable in your mobility, along with those who have flight capabilities. We will need to strike fast against the Corruptor. Mobility is an advantage we must utilize."

"I do have a few spells available that I would be happy to share with others," Grondar says in reply. "Only two of them can affect more than one person, however."

"Very good. I am sure you will put them all to the best use available."

Validar watches the procession as they continue in the swamp. Being near to the back, the others all fall in line before him. He gives Arocken an unspoken look, which the elf returns and the two quietly complete the end of the column.

Lord Validar walks along with his sword unsheathed and his shield at the ready. His eyes scan to both sides of the path as well as behind, but Arocken has the tail well under control. Eventually they reach a small clearing.

Here the spellcasters prepare themselves with advanced spells and Validar will encourage anyone to prepare what they can here. Validar will drink heartily but not excessively. The heat and oppressive smell do not seem to bother him, but when he removes his helmet, his hair is already soaked with perspiration. "Come, let us make our last approach to the battle. All of you will fight bravely today and when this task is over, there will be less evil in the land."

As they approach the shrine, Validar will start to move towards the front of the group.

Suddenly the path widens and the obscuring cypress trees fall away. The area around the shrine is mostly open. A figure in black robes can be seen in the distance near the front entrance.

He calls out, "Welcome adventurers. I've been expecting you. You will join us or die!"

Lord Validar will take walk quickly but not overly so to the front of the column, giving his comrades some time to spread out. He will nod and point to those with flight mobility as he passes to signal the time to move out.

Grondar and Chareos have already verbally responded to the vile enemy before them, but Validar will also respond as he signals the groups to spread out and flank the area as best they can.

"You are mistaken. If you truly are this Lord of Corruption, then you are also a fool. We will neither join you nor die this day. This shrine will fall and the evil that holds this swamp in its sway will be defeated."

Validar strides confidently forward towards the Shrine and the black robed figure as he speaks. He points with his sword as he speaks. "Guardians of Light! Spread out to each flank, left and right, those with mobility, get airborne. We want a loose semi-circle with the fighters advancing in the middle. Clerics are responsible for any undead first and protection and support of the others second. Do not get too close to the swamp edges, as we do not know what to expect. Keep each others flanks guarded, so we cannot be attacked from surprise. Archers, open fire! Spellcasters hit him with everything you have!"

Validar will continue to approach, hopefully followed by the other fighters. He will keep an eye on the surrounding area, but focus on Vryxnyr. "The swamp itself may be our biggest foe," Validar will say to his comrades. Do not discount it! This slug before us may be but one minor part of the whole. Still we must hit him hard and fast! Guardians, strike!!"

Validar will move forward and seek to engage Vryxnyr in hand to hand combat with his sword, if something does not prevent it.

Kharyna -

Kharyna is happy to be nearing the end of this battle. While she has enjoyed the tasks at hand and meeting old and new friends, she is ready to get back to her own goals.

At the stopping point close to the shrine, Kharyna will cast (in order):
Levitate on herself (6 t)
Mirror Image on herself (18 r)
Protection from Evil on Aswansea (18 r)

Once they reach the shrine, Kharyna will move a few feet to the left off the path, use Levitate to gain some altitude for casting magic and then fire off a Lightning Bolt at Vyrxnr.

Argent:

The swamp is quite repulsive as Argent walks along. The humidity is unpleasant and she's perspiring heavily. So much for making herself presentable this morning! All that work for nothing. There's already mud on her green dress!

The Invoker leans heavily on her staff and drinks far too much from her waterskin.

"Why does the enemy always have a stronghold in such out of the way places? It's a pain to travel to these hidden areas. This swamp is horrid. I'm sure that this dress is going to be ruined by the time we're done with this!"

Just before reaching the shrine, Argent will cast Fly and Mirror Image on herself.

The head nasty shows up and Lord Validar gives the notice to move off. Argent will fly off to the right taking a position some 100 yards away from the guy in the black robes and forty feet overhead. She'll send a barrage of Magic Missiles towards him to start with.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Talia:
Sherra will embrace Talia briefly before she departs, understanding the reasoning her fellow thief has offered. "We shall return soon enough," she promises with a small smile.
Talia happily returns the embrace from her friend. "I know you will. I shall be waiting to hear your tale of victory. May Tymora watch over you."

Talia will watch the others depart before going inside the house. The dark haired scout tends to avoid Po during this long wait.
I shall find the safest path.

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden finds this swamp to be quite distasteful. A horrible twisting of nature to dire ends. It makes her miss her beloved elfin forest all the more. Still, the end of this mission is close. With victory comes freedom from the quest.

At the prep spot, Lilia will cast Shield, Detect Invisibility and Alter Self in order to grow her insect-like wings.

When the battle begins, Lilia will fly off to the left and take a position ten feet overhead. Seeing all the spells being flung at the Corruptor, Lilia is content to fire arrows at him for now.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Ivy on the offensive!

Post by Ivy »

Ivy:

Ivy forces herself to concentrate on the task at hand. Her hatred for undead manages to keep her going onward in this dismal place. Finally, the shrine of evil can be seen. More importantly Ivy finally begins to detect the presence of undead!

"There is undead in the swamp!", Ivy will call out. "They are underneath the waters. Even underneath the ground around the shrine!"

With her focus solely on the undead, Ivy doesn't pay much attention to what else is going on around her. She'll grasp her Holy Symbol and present it dramatically towards the swamp on her side of the path to Turn them.

"Be gone, foul undead! In the name of the Blue Lady, I command you to fall into natural death!"

After making her Turn Undead attempt, Ivy will grab her mace and whack any undead that she can see. Ivy will make every effort to stay on the path and not go into the swamp itself.
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

Lord Corley

Post by Corley »

Corley:

The young noble comes out of the funk he's been in as the group nears their destination in the gloomy swamp. As the shrine comes into view, Corley will draw his two-handed sword and prepare to engage the enemy.

Corley will step ahead of Lady Elspeth and Lady Sallavarian to ensure their safety. "I shall stay in front of you, ladies. I vow that none shall get past me!"

True to his word, Corley will stay close and not rush off to engage the enemy. He'll scan the swamp near them in case any of the undead Ivy mentioned surface and attack.

Elspeth

Post by Elspeth »

Elspeth:

The Gentle Healer feels the same oppression caused by the swamp as everyone else tries to shake it off.

"Do not give in to fear, my friends. I am confident that we shall be victorious and that evil shall be driven from this place for all time!"

When Ivy reveals that undead are near and underneath the water, Elspeth will take hold of her own Holy Symbol and Turn Undead on the other side of the path away from Ivy. Between the two of us, we may be able to clear the way to the shrine.
Corley will step ahead of Lady Elspeth and Lady Sallavarian to ensure their safety. "I shall stay in front of you, ladies. I vow that none shall get past me!"
"My thanks, Lord Corley. I fear that our destination is within the shrine itself. Once these undead have been cleansed, that is where we must go. My visions tell me so."

Elspeth will pick up her own mace and bash any undead that gets too close to her or her companions.
How can I help?

Sherwood:

Sherwood leads the party through the swamp with a grim look on his face. At the spot before the shrine, he casts Polyself and changes into an elf. Upon reaching the swamp and spotting Vryxnr, Sherwood will cast Dispel Magic on the man, hoping to free him before the battle even starts.

If that attempt fails, Sherwood will change into a harpy and gain altitude to give room for those on foot. At this point he'll hold and see what the current situation is before deciding his next course of action.

Jallarzi

Post by Jallarzi Sallavarian »

Jallarzi:

On the morning of the last part of the journey to the shrine, the adventurers will see that Lady Sallavarian has changed into more suitable attire than her usual silk dresses. Such garments are wholly unsuitable for adventuring. It is a lesson that her apprentice has yet to learn.

Jallarzi's style of dress is more commonplace. A frilly white top and riding britches. She wears a pair of soft boots and a cloak, both of which are of elven manufacture. As usual, her bracers are around her wrists. They appear to have been made out of reddish lizard-like hide and are bound with platinum filigree and bloodstone settings.

Lady Sallavarian has removed almost all of her unnecessary jewelry. She only wears a pair of rings. Slung around Jallarzi's shoulder on a strap is a small carrying case that holds five wands.

Lastly, Jallarzi walks along with a staff.

As the excitement begins, Jallarzi will stay close to Elspeth as she engages the hidden undead. She's content to save her magic for the moment and not waste it in the opening rounds of what promises to be a long, drawn out battle. Should she be menaced by undead, Jallarzi will hit them with her staff.

Post by Acerion »

Acerion:

Acerion will press on through the swamp led by sheer determination. The sheer stench of evil is almost more than he can bear, and combined with the unfavorable conditions within the swamp make it a dual challenge. With grim resolve he continues on until finally the lead elements of the group come upon the shrine.

As Validar begins to direct the group, Acerion retrieves his horn and moves into the mass of the group, attempting to gather as many of his companions in the beneficial area of effect before sounding the horn. He will then grab his battle axe and begin to move forward, keeping aware of any attacks from the sides, especially those that may target Ivy and Elspeth, as he has vowed to make sure they will make it through this conflict alive.

Lyonessa:

Lyonessa listens carefully as the scene is described to her. She closes her eyes and envisions where gruesome undead linger beneath murky surfaces. She tries to picture the lay of the land around the shrine from the descriptions and what she could observe from further back. When she has everything in place in her mind, she begins a low song.

Weaving the descriptions into the song, she lets everyone around her see what she sees. She builds her companions confidences in her telling of victory and warns of the unseen undead that Ivy and others have detected. She plays out possible outcomes, woven in her words, but varied in results - each time though portrays her companions' victory. She rallies her friends so they may benefit from an increased attack bonus.

Chareos

Update to last post- He will cast Protection from Evil 10' before the battle begins upon Kylie.

Orders are given to move forward and begin to flank the Lord of Corruption himself in a half arc. Chareos follows suit with Lighting wand in his hand and staff in the other. He takes up the left flank not getting too close as ordered and says the word of power to the wand, sending a lighting bolt into the Lord of Corruption

Sherra wrote:"I am quite rested," Sherra will reply to her friend's question. "I believe Lyonessa's songs carried me off to a very peaceful sleep indeed. I am, however, anxious to get underway and see an end to the vile taint that has plagued the land."
"That is good to hear, Sherra," Grondar replies. "This unpleasantness will be behind us soon enough."
Sherra wrote:Sherra smiles warmly at her friend, "Of course I will take the blessing and I appreciate the extra protection it will provide." Sherra will keep her bow ready and move into position after receiving Grondar's spell. She will keep vigilant and wait for Sherwood and Validar's orders.
"Then you shall have it." Grondar casts the spell upon her, uttering words of thanks to Berronar in the process.
Validar wrote:"Indeed that is true. You will be valuable in your mobility, along with those who have flight capabilities. We will need to strike fast against the Corruptor. Mobility is an advantage we must utilize."

"Very good. I am sure you will put them all to the best use available."
"As you say, Lord Validar. I shall do my best to assist our group in any way I can."

Validar wrote:Validar strides confidently forward towards the Shrine and the black robed figure as he speaks.

Grondar takes note of Validar's orders as they approach the Shrine. As soon as the ground widens out, Grondar waits for Validar to move just far enough ahead, then stops for a Prayer, positioning himself to catch as many of the others in the effect as possible.
Ivy wrote:"There is undead in the swamp!", Ivy will call out. "They are underneath the waters. Even underneath the ground around the shrine!"

Once Grondar has completed the casting of his spell, he will move to the center behind the fighters. As needed, he will watch for any undead that get past his fellow priests, zipping to one flank or the other to mash them with his mace. This will also position him to provide healing to any who need it.

Kylie:
Chareos wrote:"As well as one can be, given the task at hand.
Kylie nods at Chareos' words. "You are right. This is a day for acting, rather than contemplating. I will try to keep my thoughts free of doubt, and focus on what I can do."
Chareos wrote:He mentions to the others near him. "I have a spell that will greatly add us, if there are no objections of course?" Depending on those around him answer he will Cast Protection from Evil 10' if space is adequate to do so. If space is limited he will wait with lightning rod in hand for orders.
Chareos wrote:Update to last post- He will cast Protection from Evil 10' before the battle begins upon Kylie.
"Sounds good to me," Kylie responds, sidling close so as to gain the benefits of Chareos' spell.

Proceding forward on the last bit of path before the ground widens out in front of the Shrine, Kylie hears Validar's orders. The flank seems like a good place to her. As soon as she is able, Kylie moves to the flank with Ivy and opposite Lady Elspeth and Lord Corley. Once she is within range, she will stop and toss a brace of Magic Missiles at the Corrupter.
