Crucible #34 - "Siege and Besieged"
Prologue:
The woman gold and blue armor continued to observe the security monitors. Why were all these people here? It was supposed to be a long holiday weekend and yet it was almost like business as usual at ADT. While she yearned to carryout her mission unnoticed, she wasn't about to let anyone interfere with it either.
A squad of PRIMUS fools had been trying to gain entrance to the Security Center, but had failed so far. Others were in the building as well. Even now they were being confronted by one of the weapons she had found here. She could easily control it to do her bidding.
On a different monitor a winged woman in royal blue was chatting to the lady scientist in one of the labs. The scientist was raging just how she had been overlooked for promotions by stupid men. The winged woman understood completely and offered her aid.
The lady scientist held up what appeared to be a large metallic armband. "Back by the power of my laser gauntlets, no man will ever push me around again! No one will ever push around Dr. Photon!"
"Welcome to the Furies, Dr. Photon", the winged woman congratulates.
How dull, the armored woman thought as she watched. Suddenly her attention was drawn to another monitor. There was something approaching San Diego coming from the south. She was not surprised in the slightest, considering just what she was doing here. They were not going to be happy with her actions, not that she cared in the slightest.
Rising form her seat, the armored woman moved to the rear exit and departed the Security Control Center. She'd wait out the remainder of the time inside the weapon itself. The screen showed that 75 minutes remained until it was fully operational.

Roll Call: Eldrich, Lily, & Serena
Having disposed of the VIPER Agents, a noise draws the trio back towards the opening in the wall. A hidden elevator entrance was once here but it has since been ripped open. No car is present, just the open shaft. Taking a good look, the heroes can see that the shaft only goes down. What remains of the elevator car lies at the bottom of the shaft. The car appears to also have been ripped apart and violently tossed aside. Bright lights can be seen down there, suggesting that there is a well lit chamber down below.
There is another loud crash from below that shatters the silence and momentarily startles everyone. Lily can also make out what sounds like something walking down there. It definitely sounds mechanical. (Gears turning, servos in operation, etc.)
Now what? Going to go down and take a look?
Roll Call: Blackout, Frostbite, Polaris, and White Crane
The heroes are in the lobby of the ADT building. At the security desk, they've found a pair of guards gunned down in cold blood. Blackout picks up a noise off in the distance. It sounds like combat is taking place!
Everyone quickly runs off in that direction. Blackout can hear the fighting growing louder, but no one is talking just yet. A deafening explosion rings out up ahead, momentarily disorientating Blackout.
Rounding another corner, the group can see Psi-Lad sprawled on the ground unconscious. A bit further along with his back to you is Gladiator. He's shaking off the effects of the explosion.
As you draw closer, Gladiator's opponent comes into view. It is a man in what at first glance appears to be silver armor with purple and yellow trim. What appears to be a machine gun is part of the right forearm of the armor.
What does attract your attention is the man's face-- the right half is all mechanical and the left side human with dark brown skin. His right eye appears to be a telescopic lens. You quickly conclude that the man isn't wearing armor, instead he's a cyborg of some kind!
The cyborg flicks his left arm and a segmented blade snaps out. Brandishing the weapon, the cyborg closes in on Gladiator...
Now what?

Roll Call: Flux, Tesla, Starguard, and Nemesis
Out in the Oort Cloud, the heroes are getting ready to board the Tyrixx Warship.
"I'm going to teleport us onto the warship's hull", Starguard continues. "We'll move in on foot from there. I'm also putting us close to the heat source that should be Goldstar. We'll have to penetrate some eight feet into the ship to reach her. Activate your belts and we'll be ready to go."
When activated, the Life Support belts generate a field of light yellow energy around the individual. Starguard then teleports you all away.
A moment later you're standing on the hull of the warship. Open space is suddenly all around you. Once orientated to your new surroundings, Starguard leads you forward. A gaping hole in the ship's hull is a few feet away. Starguard flies into the hole and everyone else follows.
Once inside you feel the tug of gravity once more from the deck. (Those who wish to remain airborne may do so.) You're currently inside a dark corridor running to the left and the right. The heat source is coming from deeper inside the ship.
Starguard moves to the nearest door. "Everything on this ship responds to telepathy", Starguard notes. "We'll just have to open things the old fashioned way." Reaching the door Starguard grabs it and forces it open.
Movement is immediately noted as atmosphere from the other side of the door is sucked out into space. Those wearing the Life Support belts feel a momentary breeze on them. It ends after just a few moments.
Starguard projects a light from his armor to illuminate the chamber. The light settles on something large and nasty looking!
Standing there towering over everyone is a large insect like creature! The thing has a long, multi-segmented body covered by black and mauve plates. Their eight eyes are set in the middle of the head, between two horn-like projections and a row of razor-sharp teeth. Several ooze covered tentacles hangs out of its mouth. Six spidery limbs protrude from each side of their bodies. It stands a solid seven feet tall and begins to move to attack!
Now what?
Out in the Oort Cloud, the heroes are getting ready to board the Tyrixx Warship.
"It will work to a point", Starguard states. "The exoskeleton of the Warrior Tyrixx acts like a spacesuit, meaning they can survive in space without protection. The other castes do require air to survive. Exposing the ship to space will go a long way to destroying it. Should we come across any warriors, we'll need to pierce their armor to stop them."After a moment's thought, Jen will add, "Oh, Starguard I have a question. If this ship is filled with holes, then parts of it are exposed to open space. Can these bugs survive in space or are they only going to be found in places where there is air?"
"That might be an effective method of isolating any combat elements on that ship: puncture the hull in various places. Goldstar and Major Star don't need atmosphere and we have these belts. That ideas workable, 'Guard?"

With a concerned look on his face, Edgar moves to speak to Metalla and Sapphire.
"Excuse me, but my scanners are picking up something very troubling. I am reading twelve aircraft of some type approaching San Diego from the south. Cross-referencing them with air vehicles in my data base."
After a pause Edgar continues. "The aircraft is what is called a Minuteman Mark 5 belonging to an organization called Genocide. Their flight path will bring them very close to our present location. As I understand it, Genocide hunts those considered to be mutants. There are numerous mutants currently here."
With a concerned look on his face, Edgar moves to speak to Metalla and Sapphire.

Lily:
Lily relates what she sees to the others. "There is someone moving around down there. Looks like they're wearing armor.
"How about giving me a few moments to take a closer look?" If the others agree, Lily will transform into the smallest spider she can manage and creep silently down the shaft to get a better look. Not surprisingly, she tries to stay to the shadows so as to remain unnoticed.

Sliding after the others Frosty rounds a corner where Blackout has directed us to go. much to his suprise he sees Psi-lad on the ground apparently knocked out as well as Gladiator shaking off the affects of an explosion.
As he draws closer the subject of which the attack orginated comes into view. What first catches frosty's attention is the gun grafted to his arm. His eyes trail from his arm up his body to his face or should he say half face... He looks shocked for a moment that quickly gathers himself as he watches a blade spring forth from the man's arms. He begins to advance on Gladiator.
Trying to Draw the cyborg's attention away from Gladiator,"Hey Crome-dome suck on this!!!" as he aims an Ice ram into the things chest.

Blackout stumbles when the explosion goes off and he covers his ears, still doing a moderately impressive run-tumble-almost falling on his face routine. He shakes his head and mutters something, "That wasn't very nice."
Frosty cuts the corner before Blackout can, but he's right behind and quickly gets a bearing on what's going on. All the gizmos, gadgets and protrusions on our new antagonist's body and face verifies to Blackout that he's a bit more than human.
"My aren't you pretty?" Blackout chuckles. "Let's see if we can offer some beautifying tips for you."
With that, Blackout hurls his rod as he moves further into the room. It almost seems like he isn't even looking where he's throwing the rod, yet he archs his arm to release it on a path that will hopefully impact with the cyborg's head.

Once teleported Flux takes a moment to adjust to the oddity of weightlessness and the open starfields then activates his newly discovered flight ability to follow Starguard into the breach of the hull.
Flux notes Starguards seemingly greater than normal strength in forcing the door but does not have time to ask about it as the light reveals the enemy to him.
Flux will enlarge to full size (unless there is not enough room) to draw it's attention to him and strike. ( If room is insufficent increase mass instead.)

Jen's a little better prepared to be teleported this time, so she's not caught unaware. Once on the alien ship, she'll revert to her normal flight to get around. She follows Starguard into the ship.
When the creepy bug behind door number one Nemesis mouths something, but nothing comes out in the vacuum of space. Those who can read lips think it was something like "ICKY!!"
Jen will blast the bug only she can get a clear shot at it.

bugs.. why'd it hafta be bugs..?
Tesla:
Tesla concentrates and electricity arcs around her body seemingly not affecting or being affected by the energy-field belts. That brings relief to Tesla's mind as she next has to content with being teleported into the vastness of outer space. She gets her bearings and flies towards the hull opening.
A monstrous-sized bug awaits everyone, blocking our path further into the ship. Tesla watches as Flux grows to match or exceed the bug's size. "Doesn't look like there's going to be much room for the rest of us," she admits.
Tesla will be ready to hit the creature with a blast of electricity should an opportunity present itself, but she feels that at least the early part of this battle will be waged by the two overly-large combatants.

Lily changes form once more, shrinking and growing extra limbs. In seconds, she's changed into a spider no larger than a silver dollar in size. Walking forward on her eight legs, Lily steps to the edge of the shaft and then walks down the side of the wall.
The journey downwards takes quite a bit of time as the world is now so much larger to Lily. More noises are heard down below as the trip progresses.
Finally, Lily reaches the end of her downward climb. She arrives at the top of where the elevator opening would have been down here. Parts of it have been smashed out by the passage of something large.
The concealed elevator looks out into a short hallway. Several doors lead off into other chambers, but all of these have been smashed open by the usual suspect. Side passageways can be seen branching off at the far end.
Movement at the end of the corridor catches Lily's attention. A large shadow can been seen moving towards the hallway from an adjacent passage. Finally, it moves out into the light and can be clearly seen.
The thing is all mechanical in appearance and stands 11' tall with the basic humanoid appearance. It lacks a left arm which has been replaced by several weapons. (At least three gun barrels can be seen.) A grenade launcher rests on its left shoulder. In place of a right hand, the thing has a nasty looking three pronged claw. The things legs end in three pronged claws that has marked its passage throughout the base.
The thing is metallic green in color with silver coloring on weapons. The thing has no neck, its head appears to be in the upper torso. The face is blank except for a 1" wide slit running across the front of the helmet in a 'V' formation. It is possible for someone to be inside the thing, controlling it.
The thing acts as if it is searching for something. It stops suddenly and begins to walk down the hallway to where the elevator is. It makes the mechanical noises that Lily heard earlier as it walks down the cramped, to it, hallway.
It appears to be heading towards the elevator and Lily, but she can't be sure if it spotted her or not.

The search for Goldstar has taken the team into the Tyrixx Warship. Not surprisingly, they soon encounter a Tyrixx Warrior! The giant insect towers over Starguard in the doorway.
Tesla is the first to react. The electrical woman fires off an arc of electricity striking the Tyrixx Warrior. The energy plays about the giant bug, tossing him backwards into the chamber.
Starguard gives chase, generating an energy battle axe as he closes in on the prone insect. He swings the axe and it penetrates the Warriors exoskeleton exposing his flesh to the vacuum of space. In rather disgusting fashion, the insects insides are sucked out into space in stream of gore and fluids. It dies almost instantly.
Starguard is unexpectedly struck by something the others cannot see from the doorway. Starguard is sent hurtling sideways.
Nemesis flies into the chamber only to find two more Tyrixx warriors waiting for her. Flux trails along behind the pink clad teenager.
Jen immediately raises her hands to generate an attack at the large insects. Her powers adapt to the bugs weakness and a blast of superheated plasma comes from her hands! Everyone in the area can feel the warmth of the attack.
The Tyrixx Warrior is devastated by the attack. The plasma rips through his armor and his inners are also exposed to space. It quickly dies like its brother.
Flux grows to 12' tall, the most height the chamber will allow, and he increases his mass as well. Flux closes in on the remaining bug. He winds up and smashes him with all his considerable might. The bug is blasted back and bounces off the far bulkhead before floating back.
Tesla flies in and tags him with an electrical blast. This time, her attack breaches the armor and the last bug's guts are sucked into space. The chamber is now clear of bugs.

Inside the Advance Design Technology complex, Blackout and Frostbite have located Gladiator and Psi-Lad. They were on the ground floor of the building in combat with what appears to be a cyborg! A concussion grenade recently went off knocking out Psi-Lad and momentarily stunning Gladiator. The cyborg advances on the dazed mentor of the Young Champions, brandishing a huge segmented blade unleashed from his right arm.
Blackout throws his rod, seemingly without having looked at his target. It bounces off the ceiling and then several walls before striking the cyborg in the head. The machine man shrugs off the attack.
Polaris bounces forward to rescue Gladiator. "Hey! Get away from him, tin man!" Polaris gestures at the cyborg and a stream of magnetic energy is released between him and the cyborg. Using this energy Polaris can either attract or repel metallic objects. In this case, Polaris chooses to push the cyborg away from Gladiator.
The cyborg is stopped in his tracks. Frostbite slides in and tags him with an ice ram in the chest, blasting the cyborg backwards. Over thirty feet later, the machine man slides to a stop.

Now what?
Inside the Advance Design Technology complex, Blackout and Frostbite have located Gladiator and Psi-Lad. They were on the ground floor of the building in combat with what appears to be a cyborg! Lily:
From her position at the top of the opening into the room, Lily has a very good view. The amount of damage done down here is amazing. What proves even more amazing is the figure that moves out into the light. It is huge, vaguely humanoid, and appears to be entirely mechanical.
The figure turns and moves in Lily's direction. Discretion being the better part of valor, Lily turns and scurries back up the shaft as fast as she can.
Eldrich wrote:"Have a care Lily. Return swiftly if all is not well."
"I will. Thank you both," Lily says. "If I need help, you can be sure I'll holler." With that, Lily-spider crawls down into the darkened pit.Serena wrote:"Proceed with caution, Lily. I will come should you need assistance."

As quick as the bug appears, its gets swatted away. Starguard gives chase and then gets whacked by something for his efforts. Jen flies forward to lend aid.
Seeing two more of the creepy insects, she gestures at them and hopes that her power will give them a taste of something nasty! A blast of something very hot erupts from her hands and it takes out one of the bugs.
"I guess they can’t stand the heat", Nemesis proudly says, momentarily forgetting that there is no sound in space.
All three of the space creepazoids, as her teammate Tigress might have put it, are dealt with. Their inners float around the chamber in disgusting fashion. Jen flies to join the others, doing her best to avoid the in air hazards along the way. Creepy green blooded would look nasty on her nice clean pink costume!

Roll Call: Flux, Tesla, Nemesis & Starguard
The heroes have successfully engaged the Tyrixx and defeated the large insects. They now find themselves in large chamber with numerous exits. The largest of these exits is in the center of the floor itself. A hatch nearly 15' across covers it. Numerous pipes and conduits pass through the room, but their function is not clear.
Starguard looks around for a moment, as if formulating a plan. Stepping up to one particular pipe, Starguard grabs a hold of it and pulls. After a momentary strain, the pipe breaks open and as strange purplish liquid begins to drain out into space.
Moving to a junction box, Starguard rips the cover off and then gestures for Tesla to join him. He points at the contents of the box, which appears to be wiring connections of some type. He indicates that Tesla should blast it.
Sparks fly widely from the box after she does blast it. The few lights in the room flicker several times before going out. The purplish liquid begins to rush out of the ruptured pipe even faster now.
Satisfied with his sabotage thus far, Starguard motions for Flux to join him at the large opening in the floor. He indicates that everyone here needs to go down this hole. The top needs to be ripped open to allow passage.
Flux digs his fingers into the hatch and gives a mighty heavy, ripping it free. He tosses it aside causing more damage with its passage.
Looking down, you can see the shaft travels down through the warship. It's partially lit, but definitely not empty! At least half a dozen, if not more, Tyrixx Warriors are crawling up the sides of the shaft! The closest is only twenty feet away and more are on the way!

The cyborg rises from the initial attacks and raises his right arm. Mounted on the back of his arm is a machine gun turret! At the same time, Frostbite attempts to create a snowstorm around the cyborg. The machine man fires first!
"Lookout!", Polaris cries out as he dives towards Frostbite. The Young Champion crashes into Frosty and both go down to the floor, bullets chasing them.
From seemingly out of nowhere, White Crane sweeps in and smacks the cyborg's firing arm, causing the bullets to move away from Polaris and Frostbite.
Blackout seizes the opening to try a different tactic. His throws his rod once more, this time its swinging line trailing out behind it. The rob bounces off walls and ceils and all around the cyborg. The swing line wraps itself around the cyborg, holding it fast.
"Well played," White Crane compliments, "but I do not know how long it will hold him." Even now, the cyborg is straining to break free of the line holding it.
Elsewhere, Frostbite is picking himself up off of the floor. Polaris is half laying on top of him and is gently pushed aside. Rolling the Young Champion over, Frosty is shocked to find that Polaris has been hit by two bullets! Blood is seeping from the wounds and he is unconscious.

Lily safely makes the trip back up the elevator shaft to where Serena and Eldrich are waiting. The mechanical figure does not appear to be following her.

"No! he shouts. Knowing full wel that Polaris's heroics saved his life and sacrificing his own. Not knowing fuly what to do he turns to the others. "Polaris is down...Anyone know CPR? Anyone here a medic?" He wil wait but a few moments. If none answers his query he will work with what he has on hand.
Reaching his hand out over the wounds but not touching him directly as not to stick to him he will try to cool the blood to slow it in the hopes that it will start to clot. "Don't you die on me!"

Lily-spider appears out of the gloom of the elevator shaft to rejoin her companions. Changing back into her usual form, she brings them up to speed on what she found.
"The guy making all the noise down there is appears to be a robot - a kind of mechanical man," she says, remembering that neither Serena nor Eldrich are from this world. "And it is big - maybe twice as tall as I am. It appears to be bristling with built-in weapons, particularly on its arms.
"I believe its going to take all three of us to take it down. Any bright ideas on how to get all three of us down there together, at the same time? The other option, of course, is to wait for it to come out and try to ambush it. Unfortunately, there's no way to know how much damage it will do down there, or whether it will even come out the same way."

"Thanks," Blackout replies, smiling as realizes he's managed to bind the cyborg. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it's going to last very long. Before he can spring into further action, Frosty calls out to everyone.
Not wasting anymore time, Blackout leaps into range of the cyborg and bring his darkness up around him, plunging both of them into it. "Let's see if you're are disabled now as I'm hoping."
Blackout will try to gage the effectiveness that the darkness is having on the cyborg and keep him distracted, resorting to his martial arts as needed. He is basically trying to buy time for Frostbite to get Polaris clear and hopefully Gladiator and Psi-Lad will get back 'into the game' by then, or at least get clear as well.

"I see no problem in all of us venturing down the shaft. Eldrich her can float upon air and with my magical boots, I can stick to any surface. I simply have not had any need to use that ability as of yet."
To demonstrate her point, Serena leaps across the opening to the far side. Her boots land on the back wall. Drawing Blessed Salvation, Serena will look back to the others.
"Shall we engage the enemy in battle?"

Moving on, everyone prepares to descend a shaft after Flux makes it accessible. Unfortunately there appears to be some Tyrixx using it as their own passageway, and quite a number of them at that.
Tesla will fire at whichever warrior proves to be the easiest to target. She will also try to keep aware of the other passages so that none of the warriors can hopefully sneak up on the group.

If you zone out like this down there in front of the mechanical monstrosity, you could get seriously hurt." Lily's tone and expression seem genuinely concerned.
"I can get down there under my own power, of course, but I'm hoping that Eldrich can help me out. Having ripped open the hatch leading deeper into the alien vessel, the heroes come face to face with more Tyrixx Warriors!
Tesla acts first and sends an electrical blast at the lead bug. She connects, but with little effect. The warrior continues to advance.
Starguard creates an energy pike and uses the long weapon to stab at the same warrior Tesla struck. The insects armored exoskeleton turns the weapon aside.
Nemesis gets in on the gang up on the lead bug club and blasts it out of existence with another plasma blast. The bug remains is blasted backwards, but it only bounces off any of the other Tyrixx climbing up the shaft.
Two of the bugs leap out of the shaft. One lands on the deck and tries to stab Starguard with its large stinger. The attack just misses.
The second bug latches onto the ceiling and tries to sting Tesla. It also misses.

There are now two bugs within HTH range and more climbing up the shaft. The above covers the actions for phases 2 & 3. Flux can still act in phase 3.

The fighting with the cyborg continues. Blackout has just wrapped up the machine man with the line from his throwing rod, but it does appear that it will hold him long.
While the cyborg struggles to brake free, White Crane leaps into the air and kicks him in the face. The cyborg is forced back several steps, but otherwise appears unharmed.
Blackout gestures and field of darkness now surrounds the cyborg. White Crane is momentarily startled by this development, but quickly vacates the area.
Inside the blackness, the cyborg breaks free of the line holding it. It looks about and then settles in on Blackout. Extending his cutting blade once more, the cyborg runs towards Blackout.
Close by, Frostbite works to save Polaris who was hit by a pair of bullets. Afraid to touch Polaris with his icy aura, Frostbite tries to put his hands near the wounds in an attempt to make the flow of blood stop. As Frosty watches, the flow of blood does noticeably slow down.
"The lad will be fine", a voice says to Frostbite, startling him. So intent was his focus on Polaris that he didn't notice Gladiator joining him. "Polaris has remarkable recuperative abilities. He'll recover shortly. Why don't you go and help your friends?"
GM Notes:
The blackness field didn't hinder the cyborg and he's drawing a bead on Blackout with his long blade. Frostbite can't see into the blackness field, but can make out noises coming from it.

The fighting with the cyborg continues. Blackout has just wrapped up the machine man with the line from his throwing rod, but it does appear that it will hold him long.

"YIKES!!", is the official, but unheard quote as the bugs start to swarm into the chamber and try to stab people with those big nasty stingers!
Jen will try to blast the one sticking to the ceiling first and then continue to pick off bugs that are either open or are menacing her friends.

It takes too many combined attacks to keep the Tyrixx from swarming out of the hatch. One attempts to hit Tesla with a wicked-looking stinger, but she isn't about to sit still for that injection!
Tesla will turn to face the one that attempted to attack her and fire off another electrical blast, hoping for a bit better results this time around.

Strong as I am, I wish I had something to puncture with. Have to settle for knocking them backwards-keep them off the others...

A sigh of relief comes across his lips as he nootices the flow of blood slowing. He remains hopeful as a voice startles him causing him to raise his guard. Before he takes aim he realizes it is Gladiator.
Raising to his feet he turns to see a blackout in the middle of the hallway. "What the..." Not being able to see though he can hear the clinking of metal feet. He tries to hown in on the sound for a location when he is fairly sure where the creature is he says,"Hey Crome Dome I owe you! He will gesture at the cyborgs sound and send a 1/2 blast Ice ram into the Borg.
