Avengers #2 - "Mission: Murder"
Prologue:
A band of hunters in the West Virginia mountains stumbles across a cave where Dark Seraph had been magically imprisoned. A priest with them blesses the cave, undoing the spell holding Seraph. He thanks them by killing them with his bare hands.
End of Prologue
In an unmarked van outside of Mercy Hospital, Mechassassin reviews the offer sent to him by a local crimelord. Basically, it's kill Hunter for a lot of money. Mech accepts and fights his way through a military guard post.
The combat attracts the attention of Helena Kirby, who is keeping vigil in her fathers hospital room. She spots Mechassassin from the window and sounds the alarm. Her father's EKG machine goes flatline.
Mechassassin continues onward and encounters Flare and Sunturian. He soundly defeats both of them. Continuing on, Mech runs into Muskateer & the Thing near the front entrance. He stabs both Avengers with his blades. Right after downing Muskateer, Sunturian flies in and blasts Mechassassin. He shoots her down with his gun.
Ms. Marvel and the Enchantress arrive on the scene. Mech's gun makes short work of the Enchantress and Marv does a move through on the mercenary, downing both.
Back up in the hospital, Helena paces outside her father's room. Finally, one of the doctors emerge. He tells Helena that her father has died.
Back outside, Musakteer & Flare have recovered and are standing near Ms. Marvel when she regains consciousness. Mechassassin, who was playing possum, takes all three of them out with a grenade.
Mechassassin continues onward and is stopped by Ms. Marvel near the front door. He wraps her up in his steel bolos and then blasts her through the doors with a punch. Mech laughs about having defeated the 'Mighty Avengers' only to have the Thing punch him from behind. The Thing collapses a moment later.
Epilogue #1: The team goes to celebrate their victory over Mechassassin only to learn that Hunter has died.
Epilogue #2: In her apartment, Helena Kirby reviews memories of her father before dressing up in her costume. She reasons that it was Mechassassin's presence that helped trigger her father's heart failure. She voes to find out who hired the killer. Thus swears the Huntress!

Avengers #3 - "Visiting Hours"
The Thing is recuperating in the hospital from the wounds inflicted by Mechassassin. While he rests, a whole host of villains attempt to reach the wounded hero to even old scores, forcing a whole host of heroes to protect him.
Avengers Annual #1 - "Old Friends"
After years of imprisonment, Dark Seraph is back and out for vengeance! His search begins with the Enchantress. Once she is dealt with, the other members of the Circle will be next.
It is a quiet afternoon at the Avengers HQ as Muskateer and Sunturian work out in the gym. Suddenly, Seraph crashes through the ceiling and proclaims that he seeks the magician. Fortunately, Gwen was out lunching with her brother. Seraph departs, nearly leveling the gym in the process.
The two work fast in trying to locate the other Avengers. The Thing is still in the hospital recovering. Flare is missing. Ms. Marvel is located at PRIMUS HQ and all three meet at the restaurant where Gwen and Allen are eating.
Everything appears calm for awhile and the five mingle. Unexpectedly, Dark Seraph emerges from the floor and attempts to carry the Enchantress off. After an aerial battle, he is defeated by the efforts of Musakteer.
It is now the weekend and Flare is still missing, but the Thing is resting at HQ. The Enchantress went home for the weekend to Boston.
Around noon, Muskateer hears reports of a battle between Ms. Marvel and Deathbird. He and Sunturian travel to aid the Avengers leader.
During the aerial slugfest, the rookie Avengers spot Megaman and his two partners: Dynamo and the Wraith. The Megamen are dealt with quickly. but Deathbird is not so easily vanquished. Speedster, from the Freedom League, tries to help, but is hurtled through a wall by Deathbird for his troubles. The fight ends in a draw. Unknown to anyone, Deathbird managed to inject Ms. Marvel with a poison.
Flying home, the heroes hear over the PRIMUS radio band that Flare has been accused of robbing a bank and that Major Tom is to going to the Avengers base to arrest Flare, and take the rest of the Avengers in for questioning.

Much like Avengers #1, #2 was also re-written from the original version after we had our C64 computers. It was at this time the scenes with Helena were added. Originally, the file only held the Dark Seraph prologue and the battle with Mechassassin.
As noted in the A1 thread, I only had Enemies III to work with and so that's where these villains all came from. For the most part, this file has become new Avengers #4 with the dialogue jazzed up a bit. Nightingale was added into the mix as well in the hospital room.
On the whole, not much in the way of changes between this file and the version on the site. Primiarly, just who hired Mechassassin and how Hunter actually died. Oh, and Mechy challenging the new team to explain how they arrive in the 'nick of time'.
The recap for Avengers #3 probably seemed very short. Unlike the previous 2 issues, #3 was NOT re-written. In fact, we deleted it from our continuity when we merged our campaigns back in the 80's. You see, this issue was an adaption from a comic and thats why it was removed. It was based on an old issue of Marvel 2-in-1 where the Thing was injured and a whole host of villains tries to get to him while all the NY heroes try to protect him. Mayhem in the Mighty Marvel manner pursues from there. For us, it was simply deleted.
Annuals, in our sense of the word, covered events that were ran live and face to face; IE normal RPGing to you folks. They were basically short recaps of what transpired. In fact, the review from above is the Annual #1 recap with just slight modifications. (Basically, I replaced the word you with Muskateer, as it was originally written to him.)
The Dark Seraph encounter became new Avengers #5, while Deathbird was replaced by Artemis & tied into Hunter's death. Flare was captured by the Morbanes, who were the old nameless types at this point in history, and brainwashed. Portions of this became Avengers #7 & 8.
The new Avengers #6 was all original. Since the GSVC was resolved in X-Factor before our games merged, the Avengers were never involved in it. We wanted to add portions of the GSVC in the Avengers and thus cooked up this issue. Muskateer was always fond of the Destroyers and they became our villains of choice.
These old issues all occured over months in real time. During that time I had picked up a few more Champions books, namely the Circle & METE, PRIMUS & DEMON, & the Blood & DR. McQuark Organization books. A few things were reconnected into the characters, such as the Enchantress being a graduate fo the Circle & Sunturian (later Firestar) being Blood. The capture of Flare and the deception with PRIMUS was part of a scenario in the PRIMUS & DEMON book. Boy, has that one been milked for all its worth!
Megaman and his Megamen were some of those lame villains I mentioned in the A1 thread. They were wisely discarded a long time ago. That's all I can remember from these issues. I'm sure Muskateer will have some other insights to add to all of this.

More random notes:
I don't think I ever knew that the actual blessing by the priest was what freed Dark Seraph. Wasn't very clear in the write-up. Always thought it was the disturbance of the place.
Mechasssassin womped everyone, but it was necessary for the fight. I think now, he would be in big trouble against this group. Something to be said for experience though.
Even back then we were doing edits to try and make the stories better and more involved and make more sense. And no one but us ever saw them!
Specs seemed to like the old comics for inspiration. There were quite a few adaptions. Some directly from comics. Some were interesting and would basically fit the story quite well. I remember one that was particularly not quite appropriate that used Peter Parker getting an apartment for Musky. Just didn't seem to jive with me,. Of course, we won't be seeing that in the new stuff. Just like all of those references, scenes or files. Our decision to distance our selves from blatant copies did away with the good as well as the bad. (Still hanging on to the Thing though!)
The old Avengers has some definite fond memories for me, but the new stuff just really blows it all away!

Yet again, still more random notes:
Yep, it was indeed the blessing. After all, who in there right mind would bless Dark Seraph??
At the time old comics, and more importantly comics that I knew Musky didn't read, were a great source for inspiration. I was still new to running Champs and needed ideas. That was fine for a private 2 person game, but not something I would do here on the site or for a online game.
In the old stuff, the GM's did most of the writing for the PC's. So, I wrote almost all of Muskateer's dialogue, and he wrote almost all of Spectrums. Now adays its the opposite. Still it could be somewhat jarring to see something coming out of your mouth that you knew you'd never actually say.
I do have a lot of fond memories of the Old Stuff and the Q Stuff. In fact, I did set up my C64 again and reviewed a few old things. Some interesting stuff to recap in the days and months to come.

That was particularly odd. I got used to it, but it was lacking at times and not very accurate!Spectrum wrote: In the old stuff, the GM's did most of the writing for the PC's.
