New Frontiers #28
The Guardians have arrived before the drawbridge to Castle Cavius. Surprisingly, they have been let inside. As the inner and outer portcullis' are raised, guards can be spotted lighting torches to provide more illumination. The men are dressed in leather armor. Their task completed, they retreat from sight.
Lord Validar leads the way riding in. The tunnel through the wall is unlit and appears empty. Heavy wooden doors are noted in the tunnel sides, but they are closed. Breaking into a fast gallop, the riders quickly emerge from the tunnel and into the courtyard.
A lone horn sounds while in the tunnel and, as if by magic, a squad of six men appears beside Kharyna. They are lightly armored and some carry longswords, while others wield battle axes. They follow along at the direction of Kharyna.
Once in the courtyard, the Guardians come to a stop and spread out to avoid being bunched up. Cavius Castle is nothing all that special to look at. It shows signs of past battle damage and repairs. You get the sense that there are men above the gatehouse and even more on the towers over the front entrance of the castle, but cannot make out any exact details. The courtyard itself appears deserted.
There are smaller, outlying buildings to the left and right of the riders along the outer wall of the castle. The look and smell tells you that they serve as stables. Each stable has multiple entrances.
The front door to the castle proper opens as the riders approach. An older man dressed in clothes typically worn by nobility appears, but his appearance is somewhat shabby. He wears a sword belt holding two swords: a longsword and a shortsword. Lord Cavius appears healthy and in his late forties. He's a tall, but thin man. A trio of men in leather armor stands behind him.
"Welcome Lord Validar, I've been expecting you", Lord Cavius matter of factually states. "And with many friends too. Very nice."
"I am not without influence of my own, Lord Cavius.", Validar responds. "It has been some time since last we met."
"That is true, Lord Validar. That is true. Is that Lord Acerion I see? Very good!"
"Indeed it is Lord Acerion. And Lord Corley as well, from Gateway."
"Oh, yes, Lord Corley", Lord Cavius notes, hand on chin. "I suppose he'll have to do as well as these promising others. Hmm... No Sherwood or Lady Sallavarian. That is disappointing."
"Disappointing? Why do you say that?"
"We had so hoped that both Sherwood and Lady Sallavarian would show as well", Cavius simply answers. "But I am sure that the most capable Sherwood did gather many fine individuals who will serve the master nicely. That you will. Very well."
"I am not certain I follow your line of thinking, milord. Perhaps you would care to elaborate in more detail?", Validar will ask, looking to get their host to tell them as much as possible.
Lord Cavius lets out a small, but malevolent chuckle. "Why Lord Validar, we never had any interest whatsoever in your father. He was just the bait. The master, the future master of all, is a most patient individual and wise beyond measure. Attempting to control those already in power would be noticed. But if he takes control of the future rulers of Cynalon, then it would be less likely to be noticed until too late."
"I am flattered", Lord Validar responds defiantly. "And who else is in this illustrious group you refer to?"
"So it is yourself, Lord Acerion, Sherwood and Lady Sallavarian that we are really interested in. Knowing Sherwood's knack for finding capable adventurers, I'm sure the others will fit in as planned. And you all came here of your own accord. Very nice."
"But of course, Lord Cavius. We could not be expected to do otherwise," Validar states, now that Cavius has confirmed that he knows their scheme. "And what plan is that you have for all of us, if I may be so bold?"
"Simple", Lord Cavius states. "You will join us. Partake in the black water and spread our master's power quietly until the time is right." Cavius pauses to let that sink in. "So you may dismount and come inside. It will all be over with shortly."
Validar snorts derisively. "We are here in the name of Rennydale." Validar will take the standard from Po and raise it high into the air. "I call no man, master. That shall not change today. We will free Rennydale!"

Page Two
Kylie:
Kylie moves forward across the top of the castle wall towards the gatehouse. The large chains that draw the bridge up go over the battlement walls and are then lost from her sight. Best guess is that the chains go through the roof of the gatehouse and down inside. Whatever mechanism is used to raise and lower them must be on the level below.
However, Kylie can't get much closer due to the number of people present. There are at least half a dozen men on top of the gatehouse watching what is transpiring down below. Many appear to have bows in their hands. One man who is watching intently has a coiled rope in his hands.
By now the Guardians have entered into the courtyard below. Kylie can make out Corley, Validar, Po, Chareos, and Ivy. The others are obscured by the battlements. There are also several armored men on foot amongst the riders who are unfamiliar to Kylie.
Kylie listens to what is transpiring down below. The conversation turns sour and battle seems imminent. She notes the men on top of the gatehouse getting ready to fire their bows.
Sherra & Talia:
Elsewhere, a pair of scouts are hiding on the inside rear wall of the castle. They rest of the group are, literally, on the other side of the castle and well out of sight. Some of the louder parts of the conversation will carry to their waiting ears.

It has truly hit the fan...
KHARYNA -
Kharyna listens as the conversation deteriorates and this Lord Cavius shows that he and his master have laid a trap for us. She scans the areas around looking for any signs of magic users and where any attacks may come from.
Confident in her defenses, Kharyna will motion to Laucian and Lara on either side of her to move closer. "Just to be on the safe side, especially for the first volleys." Kharyna uses her Staff of Power and generates a Globe of Invulnerability around herself, which will extend to others if they move into the area. She will look to see what happens and where to send her next spell.
"Fighters of Valhalla attack Lord Cavius and his attendants!", she will command.
"Take out the leaders," Kharyna will loudly offer to any who can hear her. "The others will not be an issue if the leaders have fallen!"

Validar snorts derisively. "We are here in the name of Rennydale." Validar will take the standard from Po and raise it high into the air. "I call no man, master. That shall not change today. We will free Rennydale!"
Lord Validar sees the anger and disappointment in Cavius' eyes at Validar's comments. The noble lord jams the standard into the ground, imbedding it there in the courtyard and he pulls out his sword with a flourish.
“Citizens and soldiers of this castle! We have come to free Rennydale! It will no longer bow to the foul blackness that corrupts this land! Join us and help free your homes and your families! Free Rennydale!!”
Validar will quickly close the distance between himself and the corrupted Lord Cavius and attack with all the skill and strength he can muster. "Come Lords! Let us show him the strength of our resolve and the error of his ways!"
As Validar strikes at his enemy , Validar will shout, "First Rennydale will be free and then we will strike at the soulless slug you call master! He will rue the day his blackness crossed the Guardians of Light!"

Lyonessa:
The conversation between the Lord Cavius and Validar start innocently enough, but soon it is apparent the intentions secreted behind eloquent words. Lyonessa can feel the weight of the force arrayed against us all closing in. here it comes and we stand in the center of it
Quickly, she begins scanning for any antagonist priests or magic users. If any are revealed, she will cast Taunt on one, which would force the affected individual to rush her in melee and take an unknown amount of dangerous spells away from the enemy arsenel.
Should no spellcasters be visible, Lyonessa will instead cast Hypnotism on the closest group of soldiers on her side. Using Validar's inspiring words, she will word her hypnotism in a similar fashion to sway all affected by her spell.

From the tone of the words that drift up to her, it is clear that they are imminently on the verge of combat. Unfortunately, the archers on the gatehouse have far too easy of a shot from here. As she is the only one nearby, Kylie figures it is up to her to deal with them.
Slinking forward quietly, Kylie casts a Sleep spell upon the archers lining the tower battlements. While she realizes that it may not do the job entirely itself, it will hopefully take out at least some of the archers while she moves closer to use other spells in her repertoire.

As Validar converses with Lord Cavius, the situation quickly goes from bad to worse. It is clear that everything they have heard so far is true. This land must be cleansed and the people set free.
"You will not find us so easy to turn to your devices, Lord Cavius," Grondar growls as he slides off his horse. Moving back toward the portculis to get Validar out of the area of effect, Grondar calls the blessings of the Revered Mother down on his companions in the form of a Prayer.
As Validar converses with Lord Cavius, the situation quickly goes from bad to worse. It is clear that everything they have heard so far is true. This land must be cleansed and the people set free.

Laucian
Laucian's eyes begin to scan the courtyard as Validar speaks for the Guardians of Light. His eyes dart across the two towers before him where men at arms stand but oddly enough there is one man not dressed as the rest which catches his keen eyes. He eyes the man in black cautiously and quickly glances at the other tower to see the same deployment.
"Must be mages or clerics.... He thinks to himself as Kharyna catches his eyes.
Confident in her defenses, Kharyna will motion to Laucian and Lara on either side of her to move closer. "Just to be on the safe side, especially for the first volleys."
He quickly tells Kharyna, Lara and the others who are in ear shot about the men in black. "There are men on the battlements in robes of black. I believe they are Spellcasters!"
With that being said he moves to Kharyna's side as she has indictated (not too close to crowd her.) and dismount from Starfire. Taking an arrow +1 from his quiver he will aim at the black garbed man on the rightside tower and let loose.

Chareos looks thunderstruck at the back of Validar's head and sees him snatch the banner from Po.

I for one will not stand by and watch this great land crumble into a mere shadow of itself!!!!"
He will than hear Corley speak of holding the left flank and Chareos goes to join his side. "Room for another," he says, as he takes a draft from his fire breathing potion. "Do not rush them Corley. Let them come to us...."

Hearing his fellow Ranger indicate an even more important tower on the battlements, Arocken will locate the target he indicates. As they had agreed to shoot the same target, Arocken will quickly nock arrows and let fly as quickly as he is able.
"Eliminate each target as quickly as possible! The others can take the other tower, Laucian. This scum is ours!"
Po -
Po watches Validar charge forward and as he has always done since joining the noble lord, Po follows his leader on his flank and moves in to attack. He will strike with his magic short sword at Cavius or one of the men with him, if they are between them.

Acerion had been content in letting Validar converse with Lord Cavius, but as he hears his name mentioned not once, but twice, he draws himself closer in. Motioning to the others closest to him, he lets them know he is moving up closer to Validar. He has heard enough himself and is more than ready to put an end to this conversational manuevering.
Validar will quickly close the distance between himself and the corrupted Lord Cavius and attack with all the skill and strength he can muster. "Come Lords! Let us show him the strength of our resolve and the error of his ways!"
Acerion needs no other prompting and, with his battle axe at the ready, moves against Lord Cavius and his guards. He attempts to position his attack to allow for full side-to-side swings of his battle axe, but if he can not, then powerful overhead strikes will suffice just as well.
"So you wanted me here as well Lord Cavius? Now that we are present I believe you will soon realize the mistake in such thinking. Hide behind one man or one hundred, it matters not, for we are coming for you!"

Sherra realizes how far out of position they really are when she can only pick up bits and pieces of the dialogue, at least until she hears Validar and the others shouting and attempting to rally support.
Still, this could prove to be very advantageous indeed as to her knowledge, Talia and herself have still not been found out. She leans back in close to Talia once more and whispers, "This is a perfect place to play havoc against anything they might send up against our friends up front. Look for leader types that we can dispatch. My guess is that most of the regular troops follow out of fear like on the bridge."
Sherra will move into the most advantageous position considering where she is to observe where any troops might move to assault the group in the front. Since she can't see anyone up front, then it means any troops of Lord Cavius can not either and will have to go around the castle or along the walls to get into better positions. With her bow she will attempt to pick off leader types, especially those using magic, beasts or any of the priest-types that might be exerting their control here. Personal Worth
Corley:
After being reigned in by Lord Validar, Corley quietly follows along, but there is an anger burning inside of him. We reach the drawbridge and after answering the challenge are permitted to enter.
Nearing the tunnel into the castle, Lord Corley spurs Destrier on and we gallop into the courtyard. As indicated by Lord Validar, Corley takes a position on the left hand flank.
The burning inside Corley gets hotter as Lord Cavius barely recognizes his existence! Perhaps Lords Validar and Acerion are better known, but Corley is as much of a nobleman as the rest of them!
"You may not think much of me now, Lord Cavius, but I will show you the error of your ways!", Lord Corley cries out. "I will more than prove my worth to you! The left flank is secure!"
Spying movement off to his left, Corley dismounts from Destrier, draws his mighty two-handed sword and prepares to engage whatever foe approaches with enchanted steel!

"I am ready for whatever lies ahead", Lord Corley stresses in response. "Let the bards sing of what shall transpire this day!""Be ready my friend to have to lift the far gate should this prove a trap. Nearing the tunnel into the castle, Lord Corley spurs Destrier on and we gallop into the courtyard. As indicated by Lord Validar, Corley takes a position on the left hand flank.
The burning inside Corley gets hotter as Lord Cavius barely recognizes his existence! Perhaps Lords Validar and Acerion are better known, but Corley is as much of a nobleman as the rest of them!
"You may not think much of me now, Lord Cavius, but I will show you the error of your ways!", Lord Corley cries out. "I will more than prove my worth to you! The left flank is secure!"
Spying movement off to his left, Corley dismounts from Destrier, draws his mighty two-handed sword and prepares to engage whatever foe approaches with enchanted steel!

"I think I can get us to a better position than this rather quickly. Just keep on levitating and hold on tight. This might get bumpy!"
If Sherra is agreeable Talia will begin to run down the wall and then leap to the ground below. Using the leaping ability in her boots, Talia will rush across the courtyard and up the castle wall and towards the highest tower.

"No actually I didn't," Sherra replies with a devious smile. "They're just regular troops Talia, surely you think our abilities are far superior to them, otherwise we won't last long as adventurers." Sherra holds back the laughter, not wanting to give away our position. "Been waiting on you," Sherra replies but braces herself for this impromptu flight about to begin. Once the pair of thieves are in their new perch, Sherra will concentrate her aim on those that seem to be ring leaders, especially those pesky priests rumored to be around. Otherwise any beasts or others that would not be typically loyal to Rennydale shall fall under her aim."I think I can get us to a better position than this rather quickly. The battle for Rennydale has begun!
Up on the wall near the drawbridge, Kylie glides through the shadows and casts Sleep on the men on top the left hand tower. The five men all drop to the ground in response. The action appears to have gone unnoticed by the guards on the right hand side of the gatehouse.
Alerted to the presence of black robed individuals up on the towers flanking the main entrance of the castle, Lara sends a Fireball up to the left hand tower. The spell explodes just above the tower, sending fire outwards in every direction. Cries of pain and the smell of seared flesh fill the air.
Up on the steps, Lord Cavius watches as Lord Validar and several of Kharyna's summoned warriors close in. "You will be put into your place, whelp!", Cavius hisses as he draws a longsword and a shortsword.
The blades sweep outwards in a deadly dance of steel. Two of Kharyna's summoned warriors drop and then 'poof' out of existence as they hit the ground. Two mighty strikes send Validar stumbling backwards and bloody the noble warrior.
Over on the right flank, Lilia rushes to join Swanny and Ivy. The Elfin Sorceress erects a Web between the stables and the castle, effectively sealing off that side. Several trolls and regular humans are entrapped in the sticky web.
The trolls are hideous looking creatures who are slightly hunched over and walk with an uneven gait. Their arms tend to drag on the ground behind them. Their rubbery hide is moss green in color and spotted. They appear thin and frail, but possess frightening strength. Their arms and legs end in three clawed fingers and toes. Their large eyes are completely black in color. They attack fearlessly and savagely.
On the left flank, Lyonessa spots a pair of humans and four trolls approaching. She sings a Hypnotism spell and enthralls the two humans with her suggestive lyrics. In response, the men turn and each attacks a troll!
Regaining his footing, Lord Validar rushes Lord Cavius and strikes the villain once, wounding him.
Behind Validar, a translucent Globe of Invulnerability appears around Kharyna from her Staff of Power.
With the right flank protected by the Web spell, both Ivy and Swanny turn their attention to the nearest combatants, in this case Lord Cavius and his henchmen. Ivy casts Hold Person and all three of the henchmen stiffen up.
Laucian and Arocken target the black robed individual on the right hand tower and let fly with arrows. The target falls after three solid strikes.
Grondar drops from his mount and rushes backwards towards the tunnel leading into the castle. He stops after traveling an appropriate distance and casts Prayer. After the magic is invoked, the doors inside the tunnel are flung open and men at arms begin to pour out. Two attacks are sent towards Grondar, but both miss.
Arrows rain down from the overhead positions. Lara is struck by one of four arrows sent her way by the tower she fireballed.
Lilia is struck twice by arrows from the right hand tower. Her protective Stoneskin causes them to bounce off. From above and behind Lilia, a net is suddenly dropped on her from the gatehouse. The net moves of its own accord to trap the elf maiden.
More arrows come flying in from the right side of the gatehouse, narrowly missing Lara and Kharyna.
The remaining Warriors summoned by the Horn of Valhalla attack. One misses Lord Cavius badly, while the others swarm over the Held henchmen, wounding each of them. Po helps out and downs one of the already wounded henchmen.
Swanny and Acerion converge on Lord Cavius and attack! Swanny lands two powerful sword strikes, while Acerion gets one slice in with his battleaxe. In spite of all the damage he's taken, Lord Cavius is still fighting on.
Lord Corley swings his massive two-handed sword at an approaching troll. He connects once, but the troll keeps on coming. It leaps at the young lord, but his claws and teeth fail to penetrate his plate mail armor.
Chareos drinks of his Potion of Fire Breathing and goes to aid Corley. He intercepts a troll moving in on Lyonessa and takes two claw strikes for his effort. Fortunately, Sherwood's protective magic saves him from harm.
The other two trolls on the left side go after the men Lyonessa Hypnotized. One goes down as the troll savagely tears into him with claws and teeth. The other man fares better, only taking a claw to the abdomen.
Back behind the castle, Sherra takes a hold of Talia as the dungeon scout uses her magic items to quickly move. Talia rushes down the wall and then leaps to the ground below. Sherra hits the ground hard and is momentarily dazed, but hangs on.
Talia is across the courtyard in just three bounds and then is moving up the side of the castle. She reaches the rooftop just in time to see Lara's Fireball go off over the left hand castle tower.

A smile crosses Kylie's lips. She hadn't expected her spell to take down all 5 men; her magic is working well at the moment, though she daren't tempt Tymora by getting too cocky about it.
The men on the other side of the gatehouse don't appear to have noticed her yet. Kylie continues to glide quietly forward, wrapped in her cloak.
She angles a bit to the right as she advances, attempting to stay out of the other guards' line of sight. As soon as she is within range, Kylie fills the area around them with webbing. That should make it hard to fire their bows!

It's hard to tell from the map as I'm uncertain what the dotted lines mean: Is there any way for Kylie to get over to the other side of the guardhouse, or are they two towers with a gap in between?

The dotted lines are the porticullis themselves. The top of the gatehouse is completely open, although not shown very well on the map. Consider the roofs connected between the dotted lines. Grondar is down in the tunnel on the ground level.fanchergw wrote:

It seems his choice of actions has left him exposed. Grondar casts his spell, but then is almost immediately beset from both sides. Fortunately, he is able to defend himself, though his left arm feels the aftereffects of a blow he took on the shield.
Seeing as it would be tough to cast spells in these close quarters, Grondar draws his mace and proceeds to defend himself. He will fight as a dwarf fights, and no dwarf ever goes down easy! Be there two or be there twenty, he will fight on.
Noting that more guards pouring from the gatehouse would endanger their lovely spellcasters, Grondar calls out, "Laucian! Protect the ladies!"

Nocking an arrow to his bow he goes through his motions of aiming at his target as a large fiery burst of flame erupts in his peripheral vision. For a moment he looses his concentration but finds his target once again. Letting loose he strikes his target solidly and reloads and fires once again. His aim is true as another shaft from Arocken ends the man's life and he disappears from sight.
He scans the surrounding area for any targets he could conceivably hit with his bow. In doing so he sees Lilia struggling within the confines of a net. "Hold On Lilia!" he yells as he begins to make his way to freeing his fellow clansmen. Yet before he takes a single step he hears the cries of warning from Grondar as movement his heard from behind him.
Turning his gaze to his rear flank he can see two guards engaged with Grondar as well as three more in the tunnel. Realizing his comrade is cut off. As he draws an arrow +1 and aims he yells for Kharyna, hoping that she will hear him in the chaos of battle, "Reinforcements!!! Grondar is cut off. "
He Will take aim at the closest guard and turn him into a pincushion. If the guards move with in melee distance he will drop his bow and take up his sword.

Acerion soon runs past him as hears noises to his left. Quickly realizing that only Corley holds the flank he moves to his comrade's aid. In doing so He spots a troll making its way through the flank and heading towards the interior of the group; he heads it off.
He adjusts his Quarter staff in his hands to a defensive stance, "Not so fast ugly...", staring into its all black eyes. He tries to defend himself the best he can but the beast shows surprising speed and breeches his defenses twice. Thankfully Sherwood's magic saves him from serious harm.
Realizing that this troll is hitting him without abandon and with a wild feral instinct, he tries to act with the same abandon. Looking into the creature's eyes he will bring his quarter staff to defend himself. As he does so He will spit the potion he drank into the face of the troll.

KHARYNA -
Trying to keep the unexpected from happening in this ambush, Kharyna chooses to create a protective Globe of Invulnerability around herself. Lara and Laucian move into the magickal aura as well.
Attacks come from all sides: Lord Cavius and his men, from the battlements behind, from the left and right of the courtyard and even from the tunnel behind them. In the swirl of combat, Kharyna looks for enemy mages or threats that could cause them more concern. One of them drops from the gatehouse onto Lilia and snares her in a net. Laucian moves out of the Globe of Invulnerability to help free Lilia.
She then sees him pull his sword and head for the tunnel entrance. As he makes his way to the entrance he yells for Kharyna, hoping that she will hear him in the chaos of battle, "Reinforcements!!! Grondar is cut off. "
Looking to see only soldiers coming from the gatehouse tunnels, Kharyna purses her lips as she makes a decision. "We need to clear the tops of the walls and gatehouse and deal with Cavius. Trying to keep the unexpected from happening in this ambush, Kharyna chooses to create a protective Globe of Invulnerability around herself. Lara and Laucian move into the magickal aura as well.
Attacks come from all sides: Lord Cavius and his men, from the battlements behind, from the left and right of the courtyard and even from the tunnel behind them. In the swirl of combat, Kharyna looks for enemy mages or threats that could cause them more concern. One of them drops from the gatehouse onto Lilia and snares her in a net. Laucian moves out of the Globe of Invulnerability to help free Lilia.
She then sees him pull his sword and head for the tunnel entrance. As he makes his way to the entrance he yells for Kharyna, hoping that she will hear him in the chaos of battle, "Reinforcements!!! Grondar is cut off. "
Looking to see only soldiers coming from the gatehouse tunnels, Kharyna purses her lips as she makes a decision. "We need to clear the tops of the walls and gatehouse and deal with Cavius. VALIDAR -
Validar closes on the corrupted Lord Cavius and is met with slashes from both of the nobles weapons. He is bloody by the attack and his advance is halted from the force of the terrible blows. Undaunted, he strikes back himself, wounding the lord of Rennydale himself.
"My place has already been determined, Cavius. I am a part of the freeing of Rennydale and if you continue to stand in our way, you will fall. We will see Rennydale free or die in the attempt and then we will strike down this Lord of Corruption."
Validar will strike Cavius again with all his might.

Suddenly aware of a troll almost upon her, she instinctively brings up her arms when her view is blocked by someone moving in front of her. She recognizes it to be Chareos and cringes as he takes blows meant for her. thank Mystra he seems uninjured, but for how long
With a moment to concentrate, she summons forth a Spiritual Hammer and prepares to use it wherever best the attacks would be welcomed. If Chareos and Corley seem to have the trolls well in hand, she will turn to aid those helping Grondar against the emerging mob of enemy troops.

Sherra finds herself hanging onto Talia for dear life as her fellow thief goes bounding down and across the castle grounds until finally settling into our new perch.
With the backdrop of a fireball exploding, Sherra knows the festivities have already begun, and so wastes little time scrambling about to bring as much into her view and line of sight as possible.
Sherra will use her new vantage point and see who is running the show in the towers and along the walls, looking for viable targets for her bow. She would prefer to target the more sinister ring leaders, but if these soldiers are going to cause harm or injury to one of her companions then it's them or us.

Po will continue to help down the henchmen that are Held along with Kharyna's warrior squad. If the henchmen are dropped before he can attack, then move to attack Cavius from behind.
Arocken -
Arocken will move to Lilia's side, seeing that she has been ensnared and attempt to free her. If the net resists his magickal blade's edge, then he will fire at the approaching soldiers with his bow.
