New Frontiers #27

Scouts of the Guardians have moved in to investigate Cavius Castle. Laucian and Arocken checked out the terrain around the castle, while the others were to move inside. Lilia and Lara failed to find a way in and returned to the rest of the group who were watching from a safe distance.

Talia used her Boots of Springing and Striding to leap across the moat surrounding the castle. Her spider cloak allowed her to stick to the side of the corner tower wall. Once determining that her landing didn't attract any undo attention, Talia pulled Sherra across the moat. Sherra used her own magic boots to levitate upwards.

Continuing onward, the two moved down the wall of the castle and away from the tower. Nearing the middle between the outer towers, Talia begins to climb upwards. She reaches the top of the wall and takes a peak. The area seems deserted, so she and Sherra climb over.

Overhead, Kylie moves across the sky on her pony-sized fly. The fly is normally an inert figurine, but when the command word is spoken it is magically animated into a living, breathing giant fly. Only the buzzing made as it flies along reveals its presence.

Flying over the castle, Kylie looks for a safe place to land. The top of the castle is a large 'A' frame in construction. While the roof does offer some concealment, there isn't any place that can't be seen from at least one of the towers.

For a moment, Kylie considers landing on the roof of the small buildings adjacent to the main entrance. However, these buildings are only one story high and are below the level of the outer wall.

While Kylie ponders what to do next, a horn is suddenly sounded down below! Another horn follows and the castle below is a flurry of activity! More lights are unveiled from the towers, illuminating even more of the terrain around the castle. The sound of men moving below is easily heard.

The horns and the increase in light are noted by those waiting for the scouts to return.

GM Notes:

None of the scouts can be absolutely sure if they were spotted or not. No one is calling out to challenge Sherra, Talia, or Kylie. Talia and Sherra can hear guards moving about and footsteps do seem to be getting closer.

I've updated the castle map on the Rennydale Reference page to include the extra lights and the approximate locations of Talia and Sherra. Kylie is noted as well, but she is at least 100' overhead of the indicated position.

Oh, and I should mention that the scouts will have reported that the drawbridge to the castle was not raised when the lights came on. As far as they know it is still down. There hasn't been any loud crashes since the drawbridges of the town where raised, so more than likely the front entrance is still open.

Now what?

The time for attack has come!

Post by Validar »

VALIDAR -

While discussing tactical ideas with the group, Validar's attention is diverted by horms going off in the castle. As he looks to see what is happening, he sees a flurry of activity on the walls and more lights spring to life from the towers.

"That is not a good sign, my friends. We cannot be certain whether all of the three remaining scouts are safe or not and we cannot take a chance. Cavius and his evil allies will torture and kill any captives."

Taking the banner of Rennydale, Validar will lead the group toward the castle at a light gallop. "Follow me, my friends. Mages and clerics we will need to use as much non-lethal magic as possible to subdue the guards and clear the towers. Archers should assist as much as possible with select targets. Fry the trolls at the gate. Fighters will have the vanguard attack." With luck, Validar thinks, the banner should allow them to get close, as though they are responding to the alarm. Also once he gets a chance, he will try to rally some of the soldiers to the true Rennydale banner and cause.

"Anyone with grappling hooks should prepare to try and scale the wall if we cannot pass the gates. Stay in groups of two or three at least to protect each other. Men-at-arms we are striking for the castle keep!", Validar will yell to the others as they approach the castle flying the green Rennydale banner unfurled.

Is the drawbridge still down?
Are the gates open or closed?

Finally, some real action!

Post by Kharyna »

Kharyna -

Kharyna will fall into the column advancing toward Castle Cavius nearer to the rear. She will cast her Detect Invisibility spell first and the join the line, holding her Spell Shield ready as well as her Wand of Fire in that hand, leaving her other free to guide her horse.

Kharyna will be looking to single out the trolls and get a fix on them as the group approaches, but also use the Detect Invisibility to see what else she can.

"Looks like you get that action you've been wanting, Swannie. Let's go take a castle," she says as her friend rides past toward the front of the column.

GM Notes:

How many guards on each of the towers?
Unknown. The scounts couldn't tell either. (Those who reported back in at any rate.) The guards are behind the bright beacon lights and that gives them some concealment. Also out of standard infravision range.
How many trolls at the gate?
According to Sherwood there were four.
Is the drawbridge still down?
Are the gates open or closed?
There's something I didn't realize until this morning, even though I was the one who drew the map. The river is channeled away from the castle in two locations, effectively creating a natural barrier for the drawbridge. The river is not fordable up by the castle, but it is down by the town. So, to ride up to the drawbridge, one has to go near the town and then up the road to the castle. You'll be close enough to the town to be covered in the their light and be spotted.

Coming in from that direction, you'll need to crest the hill to be able to even see the drawbridge. Part of the drawbridge is illuminated, so you can see that it is still down. The gates beyond are behind the lights and obscured by the darkness.

Post by Talia »

Talia:

"Out of my element once more", Talia thinks to herself as she climbs up the side of the castle wall. "Second story jobs were never my thing, but with this cloak I could make a killing! Provided I wanted to go around stealing things."

Glancing back, Talia makes sure that Sherra is still close by. Seeing that her friend is there, Talia continues to crawl up the side of the castle wall. Reaching the top, she sneaks a peak and finds the area clear. Gesturing for Sherra to follow, Talia goes over the top of the wall.

Gathering her bearings, Talia looks about. They came over the back wall of the castle. The longer distance between towers here providing better cover than anywhere else.

"So far, so good."

And then things go south. Horns are sounded and even more lights are turned on from the towers. Footsteps can be heard off in the distance. Have we been spotted?

"Famous last words..."

Panic rising in her, Talia looks wildly about and then crouches down low to present a smaller target. Her first thought is to simply run using her cloak and boots to escape. But that would leave Sherra by herself and Talia couldn't do that. The footsteps seem to be coming closer.

"Over the wall!", Talia whispers and goes over the wall on the castle side. She'll crawl down about five feet or so and then stop. "Hopefully they'll be looking for intruders outside the wall and not inside!"

"We do we do now?" Talia will ask of her companion.

To the rescue!!

Post by Corley »

Corley:

Lord Corley waits impatiently for the scouts and Lady Kylie to return. Waiting is something every soldier experiences, but it is never welcomed.

Finally something happens to break the monotony. Alarm horns and more bright lights are heard and seen about the castle!

"They've been found out!", Corley calls out, slipping his helm on. Raising his lance, Corley spurs Destrier causing the warhorse to surge forward. "We must rescue the ladies!"

Lord Corley will ride hard towards the castle and attempt to find a way in, letting no one or nothing stand in his way.

(Unless someone stops him before he gets too far that is...)

Swanny:
"I did say only if things got out of hand, 'psycho' Swannie," Kharyna will say with a chuckle.
"Who says that my definition of 'getting out of hand' is the same as yours?"
"Yes, this doesn't seem to be much of a lucrative adventure by any means," Kharyna will say somewhat wistfully. "But we are here as a favor to my mentor Jallarzi. She has been very helpful to us in the past and I am sure will be again. Once this is completed, then we can get back to the Towers of Gaz and my own mission for Mystra. After all, there is much more treasure to be had there, as we already know."
"Yeah, I know", Swanny agrees. "Jallarzi's an all right gal. Elcadan is a bit rundown compared to some of the places we go, but the gambling houses can be fun. Always a fight or two whenever I'm there! All the excitement one could want."

"Curiously, did Mystra give you a deadline on completing this mission? I mean, based on some of the stuff Lara's been talking about, we've seem to have barely scratched the surface of this place. This could take many months to accomplish. Not that I'm complaining. If the goodies we've found so far are any indication, the deeper levels would make a dragon envious!"

Swanny listens stoically when Kharyna and Lilia have their little talk. Afterwards Swanny will say, "I'll say one thing, she does speak her mind. Which can be good or bad. You really thinking of letting little miss snotty come along with us?"
"Looks like you get that action you've been wanting, Swannie. Let's go take a castle," she says as her friend rides past toward the front of the column.
"Now you're talking!" Eagerly, Swanny mounts up and rides to the front of the group. She'll keep her Flame Tongue at the ready for when we come to the trolls. Once the attack begins, Swanny will let the monsters come to her, allowing the mages to do their thing first. "Just save one for me, wizards!"

Kharyna -

Lara listens as Lilia and Kharyna have their exchange with an amused look on her face. After Lilia departs, Lara will add, "Believe it or not, I think she respects you. She's a bit rough around the edges, but does have talent."

"Really?", Kharyna will say. "I can't say that I noticed, but she did back off awfully quick. Honestly I was hoping to maybe see a point I hadn't thought of yet."

Swanny listens stoically when Kharyna and Lilia have their little talk. Afterwards Swanny will say, "I'll say one thing, she does speak her mind. Which can be good or bad. You really thinking of letting little miss snotty come along with us?"

"I'm not sure. She spoke up awfully quick, but without really thinking and making assumptions. We have a great group that has always worked well together. The four of us, with Daramos, have accomplished much that larger groups may have had trouble with. Talia is a nice addition for our needs. We need to see if Lilia can fit in with the rest of us well enough before I can make that decision. I'm not just looking for bodies. We can get them anywhere."

Swannie - "Who says that my definition of 'getting out of hand' is the same as yours?"

"Yeah, you always did look for any reason to have a fight. I'm a bit more refined than that," Kharyna will say with a playful chuckle.

Swannie - "Curiously, did Mystra give you a deadline on completing this mission? I mean, based on some of the stuff Lara's been talking about, we've seem to have barely scratched the surface of this place. This could take many months to accomplish. Not that I'm complaining. If the goodies we've found so far are any indication, the deeper levels would make a dragon envious!"

"Actually, considering the scope of this mission, I cannot imagine any timeframe being realistic. The fact that we are making progress is good in and of itself. Mystra has informed me that there are 8-10 levels in each of the towers and to restore the temple to its proper position, we will have to clear them and defeat all foes and enemies. I don't expect this to happen quickly and it's why we were able to take the break to be here." Kharyna thinks back on the tower for a moment. "We still have a lot of work ahead of us here."

Lara - "Admittedly, I am looking forward to that. Too bad the towers are underground, but the rewards are more than worth it. Hopefully we can finish up this task in a quick and efficient manner. I hope Talia's okay out there. I hope she doesn't do anything stupid in an attempt to prove her worth."

"Well, we pretty much have to go underground to find anything special. Little of it is left laying in a field somewhere. Most treasure has been hoarded away somewhere. Which is perfect for us."

"If we're doing our jobs, there shouldn't be anything left when you get there, Swannie!", Kharyna will call after her friend, unsure if she even heard her. "Come on Lara, let's blast these trolls back to where they came from. I hate trolls."

Laucian

As the battle plans are being discussed horns sound in the distance. "They have raised the alarms. Let us go to their aid."

He mounts up quickly drawing his bow from his quiver and nocking an arrow to his bow. He is uncertian how to distingush the normal guards from the controlled.

As they ride towards the gates Validar shouts, "Stay in groups of two or three at least to protect each other. Men-at-arms we are striking for the castle keep!"

Laucian will attempt to watch the guards and fire upon those who do not sway in their actions against them.

VALIDAR -

As Lord Validar is about to lead the Guardians of the Light to cross the ford near the town, Lord Corley breaks out from the rear of the pack, seeking to rescue Kylie and the others.

"They've been found out!", Corley calls out, slipping his helm on. Raising his lance, Corley spurs Destrier causing the warhorse to surge forward. "We must rescue the ladies!"

"Corley! Lord Corley! Wait," Validar shouts to his friend. Not waiting but a moment, knowing Lord Corley's single-mindedness, Validar passes the Rennydale standard to Po and charges forward to head off his friend. "Come Havok, we have to catch our impetuous friend." Lord Validar spurs Havok as fast as the powerful warhorse will go, reigning up Havok in Corley's path.

"Corley! We need to follow the plan! Not rush off half-cocked! If you want to save them, follow me!" Validar will yell to his friend who continues his charge.

As the battle plans are being drawn up and discussed horns ring in the distance. Validar calls us to arms and Chareos turns to Grondar, "It seems now is not the best time for this potion my friend. Let us go and retrieve our comrades."

He takes his quarterstaff in hand and rides hard after the others. He hears Swannie's protest to save her some trolls to fight. "I will try but I make you no promises!" He yells back to the passionate fighter.

Arocken -

Arocken will see Lord Corley break into a charge and is ready to join him in the direct attack, when Lord Validar moves to stop things.

"We can take the castle in a direct attack! But we will follow your plans, Validar. You have proven yourself in the past. What shall we do?" The efin ranger says enthusiastically.

Po -

Po takes the battle standard of Rennydale and moves to the front of the forming column. He waits for further orders from Lord Validar before proceeding further.

up and over.... oops..!

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Sherra pauses in her ascent and lets Talia peak up over the wall and then, once given the signal it's all clear, climbs up over and easily settles in next to her friend.
"So far, so good."
Sherra is about to reply when suddenly an alarm sounds. Additional lights are revealed, but the two thieves are still in relative darkness. There seems to be guards moving towards them, but no one has called out a challenge, although the lights are too much contrast against the dark night to pick out much of anything from where they are.
"Over the wall!", Talia whispers and goes over the wall on the castle side. She'll crawl down about five feet or so and then stop. "Hopefully they'll be looking for intruders outside the wall and not inside!"

"We do we do now?" Talia will ask of her companion.
Sherra joins Talia, positioning herself as best she can, although she has no fear of falling. She concentrates on her Armor and lets it blend in with the castle wall perfectly since she isn't moving, and with her cloak up, as long as she doesn't look at anyone where her blue eyes would give her away, she is effectively invisible.

Sherra whispers to Talia, her lips as close to the other thief's ears as she can manage, "We wait and see if they pass and listen to what they're scrambling about for. Once they've moved on, we finish what we set out to do." With that, she points down to indicate to Talia that she doesn't think they were comprimised and that they should infiltrate further. After that, Sherra stops moving and waits patiently, perched on the side of the wall until the opportunity to continue on presents itself.

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden is silently waiting when the alarm is raised, momentarily startling her. She tries to see what is going on with her sharp elfin eyesight, but the bright lights foil the attempt. She mounts up when the others begin to move out, listening for what she is to do.

"Mages and clerics we will need to use as much non-lethal magic as possible to subdue the guards and clear the towers. Archers should assist as much as possible with select targets. Fry the trolls at the gate. Fighters will have the vanguard attack."

As the group rides along, Lilia mentally goes over her spell inventory. Fortunately she selected fire magic after the encounter with the icemen and is well prepared in that aspect. Once an engagement with the trolls begins, she'll cast Fireball if the area is clear of non-trolls or use Agannazar's Scorcher if the area is crowded. Burning Hands will be saved in case a troll gets too close, or a down trolled needs to be fried before it rises again.

Lilia will remain mounted and use her arrows for regular battle. There are plenty of competent front line fighters present already.

"Well, we pretty much have to go underground to find anything special. Little of it is left laying in a field somewhere. Most treasure has been hoarded away somewhere. Which is perfect for us."
"Oh, I am well aware of that Kharyna. I just don't care to be underground is all. At least the tower is very large and open so far, in spite of being below ground."
"Come on Lara, let's blast these trolls back to where they came from. I hate trolls."
"All I have is Fireball and Burning Hands at the moment, Kharyna. They shall have to do."

As Swanny rides off brandishing her Flame Tongue, Lara will add, "Don't get too eager, Swanny! Wouldn't want to singe the hair off that pretty head of yours!"

Cast Fireball as soon as the trolls are spotted and try to get as many of them as possible in the area of effect.

Roll Call: Sherra & Talia

Sherra and Talia go over the inside of the castle wall and down a bit. Up above them, several guards rush past without noticing them. There's not as much activity down below them in the compound. After a few minutes, the area seems deserted once more.

Where do you ladies want to go from here?

Roll Call: Outside group

After the horns sound and Lord Corley is reigned in, the group rides in an orderly fashion towards the castle. They move towards the northern side of town to cross the river before heading up to the castle.

Movement can be spotted on top of the tower beside the entrance to the town. However, no challenges are issued and no attacks are forthcoming. The drawbridge continues to be raised.

Continuing onward, the group rides up the hill and towards the front entrance of the castle. Drawing closer you can see the drawbridge is still down, but the current position of the portcullis can't be determined.

Riding closer, the group enters into the lighted area. No trolls can be seen. Occasionally a glimpse of movement can be spotted up in the towers flanking the drawbridge. There are several men in each of the towers. With the exception of a loud buzzing sound, everything is quiet.

"Who goes there?", comes a challenge from one of the towers.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Acerion:

Acerion notices the tension that some of the others have as we are waiting around. He remains at ease upon his warhorse, occassionally scanning about to make sure nothing out of the ordinary occurs. The only thing that does occur is that the castle seems to suddenly spring to life as more lights shine into the darkness and horns can be heard.

Suddenly the group springs into action, a few a bit too eagerly, and as Acerion dons his helmet and wheels his warhorse around, he spots Validar chasing off to reign in Corley. Acerion rides up quickly to take his designated spot, but is prepared to charge forward even faster if the plan falls apart. In short order though, it seems Validar brings everything under control and everyone heads out as planned - with purpose but not breakneck speeds.

Acerion keeps his battle axe at the ready, but not in a threatening manner. As they close the distance, it seems something else entirely is going on, but eventually they do get noticed.

"Who goes there?", comes a challenge from one of the towers.

Acerion closes his grip tighter around his battle axe and awaits to see if our ploy will work.

Kharyna -

"Coming up in mid-conversation didn’t help. It did sound like you were going to attack right away in the darkness. I knew you better and didn't need to say anything. She did not. She learned the error of her way."

"We all know what assume means," Kharyna says with a smile.

Lara - "Oh, I am well aware of that Kharyna. I just don't care to be underground is all. At least the tower is very large and open so far, in spite of being below ground."

"Yes, the tower is very large as we've seen. Who knows how long we'll be there this time."

Swannie - "It always takes time to get used to working with someone else. We are small and have been together a long time, so much easier for us to coordinate. Almost impossible in a group this large. If someone can fit in and fill a necessary niche, then I'm all for it providing we can co-exist with them. We have the advantage of being able to pick and choose our companions."

"Yes, it does make it somewhat easier."

"I don't go out of my way to find a fight. They just seem to find me is all. Just call me lucky!"

"Yeah, right."

"Given that, adding more competent members might be a good idea. One or two more frontline fighters for instance. You and Lara have the magic we need. Talia takes care of scouting and providing a safe passage. So just more hand to hand warriors would be need in my opinion. Adding Miss Snotty wouldn't be a drawback as she can do the same things as Lara. Cast a spell here, fire an arrow there, and go hand to hand if needed. Just my opinion. Can always kick her out later if she's too annoying."

"We'll see how she is the rest of this mission and decide from there, I guess. Not something to decide right now."

Kharyna watches with some surprise as Corley bursts out of the back of the group in a flurry of armor and horse hooves. A moment later, Validar stops him and they all fall in column.

Lara - "All I have is Fireball and Burning Hands at the moment, Kharyna. They shall have to do."

"As long as there are only four trolls, we shouldn't need more than one or two Fireballs from the group. Would hate to waste them, when we may need them against something else."

Kharyna is silent as they pass close to the town. She can feel a few eyes on them, but thankfully nothing happens as they quickly ford the moat stream and head towards the castle. Kharyna grips the reigns on her horse a bit tighter, prepared to jump off as soon as the action begins.

They close nearer to the drawbridge of the castle and are then challenged from the towers. Kharyna waits to see what Validar says, but stashes the Wand of Fire, preparing to cast her own spells. Fire doesn't seem necessary on the first attack, since the others also used Fireballs against the Ice Lizards. Perhaps a Wall of Fog or Mirror Image or even Invisibility to start. The moment stretches on...

VALIDAR -

Lord Corley is surprised when his path is suddenly blocked by Lord Validar.

"What are you doing?! I must--"

"Corley! We need to follow the plan! Not rush off half-cocked! If you want to save them, follow me!" Validar will yell to his friend who continues his charge.

Lord Corley sits there, trying to figure out what Validar is saying. He's unsure of his friends meaning, but knows that he would not lead him astray.

Validar rides closer to his friend now that he has stopped and puts his hand on the impetuous young noble's shoulder.

"Very well, Lord Validar. I trust your council, but let us ride quickly before it is too late!"

"I have every intention of that, my friend," Validar will say, his eyes piercing out from his visor. "Come, let us ride, but with purpose and not with too much flourish."

Lord Validar then leads the rest of the group forward, with knowing looks to the other fighters: Acerion, Po, Aswansea, Corley and others near the front. "We will have a chance to earn glory and honor this day, my friends. Let us strike with all the skill and strength we possess."

The Guardians manage to pass the town unchallenged. Validar rides along with Po holding the standard at his right side and leads the Guardians onto the road toward the castle. Validar's pulse begins to quicker as he anticipates the coming battle.

Validar leads his group closer at first closing the distance from 150 feet from the drawbridge to a shorter amount. He stops a short charge distance from the drawbridge and raises his arm to signal the others to stop.

For a long moment he is silent. "I am Lord Validar of the Barony of Pyris!," Validar will finally begin, his voice carrying through the cold night air. "We carry the banner of Rennydale!"

Validar will nod toward to Po who lifts the banner higher momentarily to emphasize the point. "We request entrance to the castle in the name of Rennydale."

Chareos

As they ride forwards Swanny shouts back a response, "That's all I can ask, mage! However, if you fail you will have to make it up to me later on!"

He can't resist the temptation of retorting back, "I do not plan on failing, but either way I would be honored by your company."

Eyes begin to watch as we pass by, the only thing possibly keeping us from harm at the moment is curiousity of the banner. For none of us seem to be wearing the proper uniform of their ranks.

We come to a halt near the draw bridge as someone from the castle yells " Who goes there?" The question is quickly answered by Validar and Chareos makes ready for the onslaught if it begins. He eyes the walls with squinted eyes trying to make out numbers but fails to do so.

He begins to recall his spells and quickly decides if trouble brews he will dismount and begin to cast mirror image.

Laucian

Laucian spurs Starfire after the others and falls beside Arocken in the rear of the column. They ride at a moderate pace towards the castle. He can't help but feel the eyes watch them from a far. Suprisingly the banner trick has deceived them so far but for how long he thinks to himself, this is not a place to be caught in a cross fire.....

As we come to a halt outside of the castle walls Laucian holds the reigns tightly in one hand as Starfire moves unsettled beneath him. He gives the stallion a pat on its flanks trying to calm it the best he can. As Validar exchanges words with the guards, Laucian tries to make out the walls and kill holes for potential targets. As he does so he whispers to Arocken , " I do not care for this my friend. Let us hope Validar knows what he is doing."

He holds his bow with his other hand making no sudden movements so he doesn't provoke them into firing.

If battle breaks out he will nock an arrow and fire at the first available target that presents itself, even if he is unsure whether it is a reflection of armor or not.

Lyonessa:

I don't like all this waiting. too much could happen and we would never know. still they seem confident in the abilities of the scouts, so I must as well Lyonessa sits and waits, not knowing what may come. What does come is as she fears, an alarm is raised. Moving quickly she prepares for action.

Taking the banner of Rennydale, Validar will lead the group toward the castle at a light gallop. "Follow me, my friends. Mages and clerics we will need to use as much non-lethal magic as possible to subdue the guards and clear the towers.

"My prepared spells should be adequate to subdue the guards, but I fear I have nothing to use against trolls," Lyonessa says, joining with the others. If there had been opportunity to spy closer on what may be faced, she could have roused everyone's morale. distance and lack of a good vantage point made that impossible this time. my other blessings of Mystra will have to suffice

Riding closer, the group enters into the lighted area. No trolls can be seen.

Lyonessa relaxes at this revelation, but trolls or other surprises could lurk anywhere, waiting to be revealed. She keeps her most useful spells as her center of focus, relenquishing worry about hidden trolls to those who have that responsibility. As the moments tick past while we wait what reply Validar will receive, Lyonessa looks for guards that must be dispatched if things turn for the worst.

Kylie:

Seeing that the roof is dangerously steep and easily viewed from the towers, Kylie goes to look at the longhouses. However, getting to them proves inconvenient as well. Looks like she will have to settle for the wall above the longhouses.

Just as she makes her decision, the castle alarms start to ring. Kylie can't help but wonder if it wasn't the buzzing of her mount that caused this reaction.

Soaring higher, she can see Validar and the others approaching the gates. This may be her best opportunity, as they provide a distraction.

Kylie descends at a dizzying pace, leveling out over the front wall of the castle. She does her best to land roughly half-way between the corner tower and the gatehouse. As soon as she lands, Kylie deactivates the magical Fly and drops to a crouch, using her Cloak to hide her presence as much as possible as she stashes the figurine back in her Girdle.

Once she feels that she is relatively out of danger, Kylie will move toward the gatehouse. If guards appear to be approaching, she will climb over the wall on the inside and hang above the longhouse roof below. Should she feel she is in danger of being found, she will drop to the longhouse roof, letting her Ring provide a soft landing.
_________________________________________________________
Kylie's landing spot should be just about where the "K" is marked on the map, but up on the wall and on the far (right) side of the gatehouse.

Their discussions of strategy are suddenly interupted by alarms from the castle. His thoughts immediately shift to the scouts and the possible dangers they may have encountered.
Chareos wrote:As the battle plans are being drawn up and discussed horns ring in the distance. Validar calls us to arms and Chareos turns to Grondar, "It seems now is not the best time for this potion my friend. Let us go and retrieve our comrades."
"You are right, my friend. Let us go save our companions!"

At Validar's command, Grondar mounts up and takes his place in the riding order. He nocks a quarrel in his crossbow in preparation for battle, though he lets the 'bow hang by his leg so as to be less obvious as they approach the castle.

Arocken -

As Validar exchanges words with the guards, Laucian tries to make out the walls and kill holes for potential targets. As he does so he whispers to Arocken, " I do not care for this my friend. Let us hope Validar knows what he is doing."

Arocken has his bow close at hand and ready to retrieve an arrow from his quiver should the castle guards decide to attack.

At Laucian's comment, an easy smile comes to Arocken's face. "Validar has the right idea. Why fight our way in, if they'll open the gate for us? And if not, well then we'd have to fight our way in anyway. Either way, we're no worse off. Watch for the guards to step into the light near the battlements to attack us. We'll concentrate our fire on the tower to the right to start."

"Oh I plan to stay close Chareos, have no doubt on that," Lyonessa says with a smile to the mage. "I have faith in the other's prowess."

There is no time for a discussion about trolls, but something sounds wrong to Lyonessa. "That can not be right Validar. I have not been an adventurer for long and maybe it is only my naivete on all this, but isn't a troll more than a match for two men without fire to battle it? My goddess, 20 trolls would decimate a small group. I would rather face 40 human soldiers given a choice of the two."

Lyonessa does not fall behind in the ride to the castle. She also does not expect Validar, or any other, to answer at length at this point in time. It is a topic she would pursue later however.

Not able to explain his thoughts at length considering the move against the castle, Validar will simply state," But it is not 40 human soldiers. It may be more like 100, plus leaders, plus Cavius and his henchmen and those clerics. And the unknown!"

Validar will leave it at that for now, but is certainly interested to consider such a discussion when the battle has ended.

Outside Group:

The main group of Guardians has arrived before Cavius Castle. The bright lights limit their ability to make out significant details to the keep. Someone on top of the towers over the drawbridge calls out a challenge.

"Who goes there?"

There is a momentary pause after Validar's response. Finally the reply comes.

"Enter and be welcomed, Lord Validar of the Barony of Pyris."

The sound of the portcullis being raised can be heard. The lights that shine down on the drawbridge are adjusted slightly allowing clear sight of the castle. On the other side of the drawbridge the group can now see the portcullis being raised. Men inside the tunnel through the wall are lighting torches for illumination. The complete this task and then vacate the area.

The courtyard on the other side of the drawbridge also comes into view as more torches are lit. The area is clear of men and monsters.

Kylie:

High above, Kylie watches as the other Guardians ride up to the castle and can overhear the exchange between Validar and the guards. After that dialogue, numerous torches are lit inside the castle walls to provide illumination. One at a time, large braziers on the tower tops are set aflame to provide warmth.

Kylie dives down on her fly and lands on the top of the wall, halfway between the gatehouse and the corner tower. The fly is returned to its inert state and stashed. Kylie crouches down to avoid being noticed.

The top of the wall is about ten feet wide and has a four foot high battlements. From her vantage point, Kylie can make out more details about the towers as the fiery braziers do provide some illumination. The corner tower has about five men stationed there. A ballista takes up the corner of the tower while three beacon lanterns shine outwards. The beacon lanterns are very large and would most like take two people to carry.

The situation is similar by the drawbridge, but there is only one beacon lantern. Six guards are stationed there.

Judging by the smells reaching her nose, the long building below her inside the courtyard is a stable. A few men can be spotted down in the courtyard lighting torches.

Looking to the main castle entrance, Kylie can spot movement of men in the flanking towers.

As far as Kylie can tell, she has not been spotted.

VALIDAR -

There is a momentary pause after Validar's response. Finally the reply comes. "Enter and be welcomed, Lord Validar of the Barony of Pyris."

The sound of the portcullis being raised can be heard.

Validar considers the stuation for a moment, with a bit of amusement and concern both mixed. His great visored helm obscures his features from anyone's site.

Lord Validar watches nonchalantly as the portcullis is raised and torches are lit. Then not surprisingly the men leave the tunnel between the gates empty. Validar's brow furrows slightly at this sight. More lights start to come to life in the courtyard beyond. "Fortune favors the daring," he says to no one in particular.

Validar turms his head slightly to talk to Acerion and Aswansea behind him, not loud enough that anyone outside this group can hear. "Castle Cavius is indeed equipped with murder holes in the portcullis tunnel. We must not tarry there. Pass the word. They may be luring us in in, simply so we cannot ride away."

The gate finally is lifted and all is quiet again. Turning to Lord Corley at his left, Validar will move closer on his horse and lean in. "Be ready my friend to have to lift the far gate should this prove a trap. Between yourself and Po and I we should be able to bypass such an inconvenience. Once in the courtyard, we must not stay too tightly grouped together. Best that we all mill about as much as possible."

Validar raises his right arm to signal the column forward. They will trot across the drawbridge, but break into a full gallop just before reaching the tunnel and rush down the tunnel with a flourish and into the courtyard.

Kylie:

The Guardians approach the castle, and words exchanged. Lights flare all around as they are invited inside. However, from all that they have seen and heard, Kylie does not trust that this is not a trap.

Putting her skills to use, Kylie moves quickly and quietly toward the gatehouse. She can smell the horses below, but they are not her concern right now. First priority is to make sure the portculis and drawbridge remain open, in case a retreat is needed.

Approaching the gatehouse, Kylie looks around carefully, attempting to identify the number and position of guards in both gate towers and the location of the controls for the portculis and gates.

Surprisingly, Validar's reply draws an invitation to enter the castle. Validar's words make it clear that he finds this as suspicious as Grondar does. "Aye, this smells fishy to me, as well, Lord Validar."

Grondar rides in and through with the others, his crossbow still ready for action. Should the portculis drop, he is prepared to leap from his mount and rush forward to help lift it. Be nice to use this mystic brawn for something besides killin', he thinks to himself.

The priestess in blue doesn't have much to add as the scouts move out to do their explorations. Ivy has no experience in such things and is better served remaining back here. Having little better to do, Ivy will meditate and try to rest in case we go into action this night.

Horns are heard in the distance and the group mounts up to ride to the castle. Ivy finds her place in line as quickly as she can riding beside Chareos. The trip is nerve-racking as Ivy expects to be attacked at any moment. She wonders just how many attacks the special protection Sherwood cast upon her would block.
"Do not trouble yourself over the trolls, From what Kharyna and the others have said the trolls shall not last long, for we have many fire spells at our disposal."

"Stay close to the rest of us and no troll will harm you."
"I'll help protect you, Songstress", Ivy will add. "The spells I prayed for are of no great help for what lies ahead and most likely will be changed into healing magic. I can fight well enough with my mace to protect you while you work your magicks."

Finally we arrive before the blinding lights of Castle Cavius. A guard challenges our arrival. Lord Validar responds and then is invited inside. Validar then turns to speak to those in line behind him but Ivy cannot hear him. Fortunately those before us pass the message on. Once near the tunnel we are to spur our mounts on to reach the other side without being trapped.

Nervously, Ivy holds the reigns of her horse. "I do not like this..", she whispers to herself. "It smells of treachery." Once the procession begins to move, Ivy urges her horse onward towards whatever awaits us.

Alarms are heard and Swanny becomes deadly serious in her demeanor. "If anything happens to the scouts, those responsible are going to pay!"

Mounting up, Swanny falls in near the front of the column. Her hand rests on the hilt of her Flame Tongue, ready to draw it at a moment's notice once the inevitable attack begins.

Surprisingly, we're let into the castle. "Well, that solves us getting inside. I just wonder who has trapped whom", Swanny adds with a sly grin.

Acerion is actually momentarily surprised when Validar is welcomed in as it was not the expected response. Thoughts of treachery quickly replace the surprise and Acerion keeps his battle axe handy as he quietly passes word of the defenses to be aware of and avoid upon entering.

Once we begin riding in, Acerion will pay close attention to any guards that get close to the group, looking for nervous habits or anything else that might betray this appearance of hospitality. He will also move a short distance from the others once we are further inside, acting as though impressed with the castle and looking about, so as not to be bunched up in a tight group in case it is indeed a trap.

Sherra did not expect to see Validar leading in the others as if he owned the place, although the more she thinks about it, it's exactly what she should expect from him, and allows herself a smile. She returns to the task at hand because the situation could very easily be a ruse and the others may have need of her and Talia's current advantage.
"This changes things quite a bit", Talia whispers to Sherra. "They could be walking into a trap. I wish I was more knowledgeable about things like this. What is the saying, the high ground is always more defensible?"

Sherra leans back into Talia, her lips close to her fellow thief's ears once more so her whispered words do not carry. "Indeed we should get into position, but we should not show our hand by taking the tower just yet, but be prepared to at the slightest sign of trouble. If we take it too early and the intentions of the castle's men towards Validar and the others are good originally, then that would change drastically and we would be forced to kill those we might not have to at this point."

Unless Talia says or does anything contrary, Sherra will begin to climb back up and find a position where she can remain hidden but be able to reach and assualt the tower very quickly if needed.

Hey gang!

Just wanted to alert you all to something happening this Saturday evening - April 24th - at 10 PM EST in the Chat Room. The next part of our story involves a conversation and such a thing is easier to resolve in a chat room rather than posting bits and pieces of it at a time. So, Validar and myself are inviting all players who can make it to attend to see what's going to happen next!

If you can't make it, no problem as you really won't be missing anything. What transpires in the chat room will form the basis of the next post and should any combat come up it'll be handled in the post like normal.

See you all there Saturday Night!

Chareos watches in anticipation as Validar speaks for our apparent entry. Time ticks by as if it feels like hours to him. Finally we are granted access to the castle.

He urges his mount forward following the others into the courtyard. He watches as guards lite torches and soon leave. He glances around to the others noticing some gripping their reigns tightly as well as their weapons. He remains on his mount with a tight grip on his quarter staff.

Laucian watches on as the group's good fortune takes its toll. With the castle open to us Laucian looks over at Arocken and states, "Perhaps I was wrong....But I still am wary."

As the others ride forward Laucian surges his mount forward making sure, as the last pair to follow, he doesn't get isolated. The courtyard soon comes into view with a few guards lighting torches and soon depart. He mutters softy to himself, "Where is our host?"

He holds his bow to his side but begins to look around at his new surroundings.

KHARYNA -

Kharyna is rather surprised as Validar manages to get the to open the gate for us and just let us walk in. She smiles admiringly to herself and then as the others start to ride through the entry tunnel, Kharyna will pull her Horn of Valhalla out.

The horns (at the castle) go off and we're on the move again. Lara rides beside Lilia and in front of Kharyna.

"Looks like Swanny is going to get her wish for excitement."

"That is very true. I don't see us using our status and strength to get the whole castle to surrender, like that tower did." Kharyna expects a nasty fight this time.

She sees the others break into a fast gallop as the rush through the tunnel and into the waiting courtyard. If this is a trap then she will be ready. As she rides under the tunnel, she will sound the horn. Hopefully it will be accepted as a arrival signal rather than anything else.

A number of fighters spring into existance in front of her. "Into the courtyard, please," she will command and the men break into a run flanking the remaining riders. "Spread out and take up a line over there," she says pointing towards the main entrance to the inner Keep. The fighters line up a few yards away from her.

Once inside, Kharyna will take her Staff of Power in her hand with her Spell Shield. Her Wands of Magic Missiles and Fire are ready where she normally keeps them prepared in a specially designed holder on her belt which gives her quick access to them in a fight.

She stays some distance from anyone else, but edges closer to Validar trying to get a good look at who is meeting them.
