Crucible #29 - "Danse Macabre: Part Two"
Roll Call: Blackout, Flux, Nemesis, Gladiator, & Psi-Lad
Inside the PRIMUS Base…
Having defeated Fire & Ice, the heroes move to investigate the hole in the containment cell block. Blackout can hear four voices coming from inside the cell area. Flux shrinks down once more and enters the hole to investigate.
Stepping around and through the debris, Flux moves deeper into the opening. The hole in the wall was the outer wall of Fire & Ice's cell. The cell door, on the opposite side of the wall, remains intact. There is a small view port in the door head high, but it is covered from the outside.
Phasing through the door, Flux enters the main cell block. A total of eight cell doors can be accessed in this small hallway. In one corner of the room is a booth that serves as an observation/guard post. The booth has viewing windows made of some glass-like substance. Next to the guard booth is what appears to be the main entrance to this area.
Four individuals are standing in the center of the hallway. They are all known to Flux. He recognizes them as the Warlord, the Priestess, the Black Magnus, and the main from Horton's Plaza known as Affrighter. A large bandage covers the side of the Warlord's face. Each of the four criminals is wearing a prisoner jumpsuit.
"It is agreed then," the Black Magus states. "We will work together to escape this dungeon and plot our revenge on those who dared oppose us."
"I do not trust this sorcerer…", the priestess begins to say before being cut off by the Warlord.
"As long as he serves me, he shall live", the tyrant declares.
This just brings an eerie laugh from Affrighter that echoes about the chamber in his odd sounding voice. "Then let us be gone! Apotheosis may still be achieved!"
In a flash of energy, Affrighter and the others all disappear from the cell block…
Outside the PRIMUS base…
Silver Avenger Rackham has gone off the deep end. He has even assaulted his own troops for daring to question his orders. Having had enough of this, Nemesis strikes!
A blast of energy flies from the pink-clad girl's hands, striking the Silver Avenger in the chest. The attack penetrates Rackham's armor and draws a small amount of blood. With an enraged snarl, the Silver Avenger lunges at Nemesis.
"You'll pay for that you traitor! This is America and we don't want your kind around here!!"
Nemesis moves to her right and Rackham's wild punch only moves air. Undaunted, the Silver Avenger begins to close in on Nemesis again…

Roll Call: Lily & Tesla
Chimera and Harpy have flown off leaving our heroines alone on the rooftop. After a short discussion, Tesla flies off to locate Archangel, while Lily goes to check out Armstrong.
Tesla flies off in the direction Chimera and Harpy seemed to come from, figuring that it would lead her back to Archangel. It is not the same direction that the two women departed in.
Behind her, Lily moves back to the edge of the building where Armstrong took his plunge. Looking over the edge, Lily is surprised to see that the impact crater is no longer occupied. Armstrong is gone!
A few blocks away, Tesla spots Archangel laying sprawled on another rooftop. As she lands, Tesla can see that Archangel is breathing and that there doesn't seem to be any sign of injury to him.
Roll Call: Frostbite, Eldrich, Serena, Polaris, & White Crane.
The battle against the giant magic absorbing zombie continues! It holds an unconscious Devilspawn in one hand, while Serena struggles to get free in the other.
Deftly moving around the giant, White Crane strikes the back of the zombies hand in an attempt to free Devilspawn. The giant maintains a tight grasp on the scantily clad demoness.
Eldrich teleports in, reappearing beside Serena. He grasps the Knight's shoulder and attempts to teleport away once more. The magic is invoked, but instead of the desired affect, the energy is channeled into the giant zombie, causing it to grow three more feet!
"Polaris can you hit it from afar?", Frostbite inquires of the Young Champion. "If so do so."
"No can do, ice cube. I can only push or pull metals at the moment. However, my bio-electric, magic free punch may do something!"
The green and blue clad man bounds into the air once more, moving across the battlefield like a Mexican jumping bean. He leaps straight at the giant and prepares himself to strike. Polaris lands his punch, generating an electric shock upon impact. The giant feels this and unexpectedly shrinks one foot in height. It now stands fourteen feet tall.
Gathering herself, Serena attempt to force the giant to release her. She swings Blessed Salvation once more, this time aiming for the arm that is holding her. The Holy Blade slices into the arm, severing it as desired. The Knight falls to the floor of the arena and frees herself from the hand holding her.
Seeing this, Frostbite changes tactics and targets the giants torso after Polaris has bounded away. He unleashes another volley of icicles and most of them strike the giant. Once more the giant shrinks, returning it to twelve feet tall.
The zombie flails about momentarily as if unaware that it has lost an arm. It unexpectedly turns, and begins to walk away.

Changing his target to the monsters torso he lets loose with another volley of ice shards. Most of them hit and the monster shrinks further from their combined efforts.
It begins to walk away not noticing the fact that it has no arm! He lowers his aim to the other arm containing Devilspawn And aims an Ice ram at the other arm(elbow}

Flux takes point to survey the potential conflict. Working towards the central hall feeding onto the cell doors, he is in time to catch the closing statments of four of the prisoners before they depart.

On the Failure of Magic
Eldrich Arcane
Eldrich Steps to Lady Serena, graps her shoulder and casts the second Step. The magic of the spell is drawn into the giant undead causing further growth instead!
Fortunetely, the Lady is able to free herself and disarm her foe-literally.
Polaris and Frostbite are even more successful in their attacks, actually reducing the creature's size somehow in the proccess.
I do not understand this. Any active magic makes the thing grow no matter the intent of the spell or source, yet physical strikes and attacks with the native energy here weaken it.
"Lady Serena, you and I must not engage the monster; we are only feeding it. The others are having greater effect. Instead let us remove the threats of the other demon and the artificer before they recover."
Would null-magic spells succeed in stopping the effect or would the casting only increase it's strength? A pretty problem from a speculative veiwpoint but unsafe to test here, assuming I could remember how to do so.

Looking down, Lily finds Armstrong's crater empty. An unladylike curse slips from her lips at this unfortunate revelation.

Swing Blessed Salvation as well as she can given the circumstances, the Knight manages to sever the arm holding her from the giant's body. Serena crashes to the floor and frees herself from its undead grasp. Eldrich is close by.
Rushing to where the Denier fell, Serena will use Blessed Salvation to slay the beast.

Once she succeeds in waking him, if in fact she can, she will try to find out if he knows what happened and if Chimera was indeed responsible. She will then suggest they go back to help Lily with the fallen Armstrong, although Tesla is pretty sure Lily's ape form should be strong enough to pick him up.
Tesla will land and move over to the slumbering Archangel and try the traditional ways of waking someone. If after calling his name and shaking him lightly fails to revive him, she will try a bit more force in her shaking of the sleeping angel. Shrugging off the sudden memory,( not without some regret ) Eldrich moves to the downed flying man with the artifacts to make certain he does not awaken and search him for weapons to use against the giant dead man.

Inside the cell block, Flux looks about after the four have teleported away. Most of the other cell doors are open, including the one leading back out into the main hallway. There are two unconscious guards inside the observation booth. Only the emergency lights are working down here, so seeing is not that easy.
Before departing the area, Flux checks in with Edgar.
"No reports from any of the other teams as of yet. I did overhear a follow up report to the incident at Ocean Pier Point. The man who washed up on the beach that has been designated as Rage appears to be deceased. The Protector known as Doc Sonic is currently on the scene."
Flux then rejoins the others outside where Fire & Ice was defeated. A moment later they can hear Nemesis' calling out as she approaches:
"Hey Sarge! The Silver Avenger has gone nuts and is attacking people! I need a little help up here!"
Roll Call: Tesla & Lily
On a nearby rooftop, Tesla finds a slumbering Archangel. She lands and attempts to awaken the winged Young Champion. After some minor shaking he starts to come around. Archangel seems confused at first, but them smiles upon seeing Tesla.
"Ah, mon cheri! What a most pleasant way to be woken up to find a lovely woman before you! My head is spinning!"
Archangel will relate that he was flying after when he was struck down by some unseen force. The attack was mental in nature and he doesn't remember much after that. Then he came around to find Tesla beside him.
Lily has discovered that Armstrong has wandered off after taking his plunge off the building. Turning back into an eagle, she goes in search of the man in the white tuxedo. As she flies along in her search pattern, Lily hears something that attracts her attention. Nearby is a middle aged man plainly dressed in a polo shirt and dress shorts wandering the street shouting.
"This isn't real!", the man cries out, all the while getting odd looks by those few people in the area. "None of this is real! Can't you understand it? This can't possibly be real! Just look around you!"

And the battle continues!
White Crane whacks the giant zombie once more. The staff strike causes the giant to shrink down just a little bit more. Polaris bounds in again and punches the creature with his electric shock. It shrinks down more.
Frostbite generates an ice ram and launches it at the giant's remaining arm. His aim is true and the giant shrinks down and is now only seven feet tall. Coupled with its smaller size and being struck on the arm, the giant's grasp on Devilspawn is broken. The demoness falls to the ground.
White Crane sweeps in, moving far faster then most, and picks up the woman. She easily carries Devilspawn away from the giant. More attacks from Polaris and Frostbite weaken it, making it man-sized once more.
The zombie flails around, its eyes glowing with energy once more. The energy leaps out and settles around the body bags that Frostbit iced over earlier. Energy seeps out of the bags and flows back to into the giant, causing it to grow once more.
Frostbite also receives Flux's message by way of Edgar about the possibility of more people popping in.
Not that far away, Serena moves towards the Denier with the intent of dispatching the demon from this plane. He strikes with the Holy Sword once more and the Denier is burned, but his skin is tough enough to turn the blade aside! Try as she might, Serena is unable to slay the Denier! He will, however, but out for a very long time.
Eldrich checks up on the Aviator. The man in the bomber jacket is still unconscious. Checking out the man's pockets doesn't turn up much. Some of the local currency, a small packages containing white sticks that seem to contain some type of plant matter, and a small silver flask of some type.
The belt is large and bulky, but does not seem to hold any pockets. The attachments to the belt appear to be part of the belt. No visible way to open them up.

"All right. Blackout, get Nemesis to take you to the convention center if she can. Gladiator and I will stay here long enough to establish a proper chain of command with the PRIMUS people after SA Rackham is restrained, then we'll follow."
Forestalling the objection sure to follow Flux says, "I know, you'd rather stay, but if anyone gets arrested for attacking a PRIMUS agent I'd rather it was me than you. Responsibility of being leader."
Flux looks at Gladiator next.
"I don't know the status of Sanctuary employees regarding international law. Is there such a thing as diplomatic immunity for your people?"
Well, it was a nice dream; save the world and have a civilian job too. Now it's time to wake up and face reality. Stronghold looms in my future unless this goes well.

Unusable Artifacts and Suspicious Components

What odd things these are, Eldrich thinks, sniffing at the white rectangles. Is that mint?? Strange way to keep components-especially for an artificer.
Eldrich will open the silver flask too and sniff the contents.
Looking at the attached items once again shows no magic eminating from them at all.
Cursed fortune! I see nothing familiar here nor any hint of how to use these things. Abyss take the lot of it!
Eldrich continues to search the man while keeping an eye on the battles, silently cheering as the undead is reduced in size again.

Polaris and White Crane continue thier attacks on the creatures causing it to shrink even further. Unfortunatly the creature still shows no sign of dropping Devilspawn.
"We got to free her quickly before he grows again." he thinks to himself.
He concentrates on the arm of the beast and is rewarded when his ice ram makes contact with its arm causing it to shrink further. He smiles as the creature drops is apparent prey to the ground. Before he can say anthing tot he others Whitecrane sweeps in and wisks her away to relative safety.
"Time to him out once and for all! What the??" its eyes begin to glow and the ice covered body bags begint o leak, apparently feeding the master as he grow in size.
"Cant you stay one size.... he says in fustration as he is about to concentrate on another ice ram at the undead beast.
*Edgar, warn the team at the center that four more hostiles may be in route via magic to their location.*
*Once we take care of Tall dark and Decaying we will be ready for them."

Jen flies through the PRIMUS basement in search of the guys. When she spots them she calls out, "Hey Sarge! The Silver Avenger has gone nuts and is attacking people! I need a little help up here!"
Landing by the guys, Jen waits to see what they are going to do next. "It's really weird. It's like he's on some psycho power trip or something. Obey me or else!"

The combat in the basement goes simply enough. Flux and Blackout seem to be efficient in their efforts to contain the escaping prisoners. Nemesis unexpectedly returns with news that the Silver Avenger has gone off the deep end.
Assuming that the matter is settled, Gladiator will go greet the Silver Avenger while the others depart. He will neutralize the man as quickly and as harmlessly as possible.

Perhaps the wave's affects those who already had super powers differently, causing them to behave radically.""Hey Sarge! The Silver Avenger has gone nuts and is attacking people! "You may proceed, Nemesis and you should take Flux with you as well."The leader of the Vigilant speaks up first. "All right. Blackout, get Nemesis to take you to the convention center if she can. "I'm only as heavy as I appear, and I haven't even had a big meal today," he tells her, smiling deviously."Uhm, yeah, I guess I can do that, as long as it's okay with Sarge here. Unless Blackout is heavier than he appears, I should be able to make it okay."
"Looks like you're tagging along there 'bossman,'" Blackout tells Flux, patting him on the shoulder. "You can't get rid of me that easily. Once Archangel is fit to travel, she will suggest they meet back up with Lily in case she had any problems with Armstrong.
"Then just sit there and don't make any sudden moves until your head stops spinning," Tesla is not quite sure if his head is spinning because of the 'lovely woman' who woke him up, which she knows he means her, or from Chimera's attack. Regardless, while Archangel recomposes himself, she will relate all that transpired from the short engagement with Armstrong to meeting Chimera with Harpy in tow. She will see if the winged one recognizes either the name Chimera or these 'Furies.'"Ah, mon cheri! What a most pleasant way to be woken up to find a lovely woman before you! My head is spinning!"
Archangel will relate that he was flying after when he was struck down by some unseen force. The attack was mental in nature and he doesn't remember much after that. Then he came around to find Tesla beside him.

Roll Call: Serena, Frostbite, Eldrich, White Crane, & Polaris.
The fighting in the Convention Center continues! The zombie has been yo-yoing in size as it takes more damage. With its power sources gone, the zombie searches for magical energy. The only thing close is the energy it imbued into the other body bags. It takes this energy back, and grows once more.
Polaris bounds at the zombie once more, smacking it with his fists. Upon contact, a bio-electric shock is generated, sending the giant back a few paces. It shrinks again accordingly.
A short distance away, Frostbite begins to generate ice on the ground before in a ball shape. Further behind him, Serena and Eldrich can only watch the battle, keeping their distance to prevent the zombie from absorbing their energies to power itself.
White Crane slips in behind the staggering zombie and using her staff trips the giant, sending it down to the floor and back to its normal size. Polaris is on the offensive once more and does a cannonball on top of the corpse. The impact is terrific and the zombie is partially embedded in the floor.
Frostbite comes in with his giant ball of ice and heaves it at the zombie, burying it. After that, the corpse doesn't twitch. Minutes pass and it has yet to move. The fight is finally over.
"Way to put him on ice!", Polaris says with a goofy grin on his face.
During the passing time, no one else has suddenly appeared in the Convention Center. White Crane will inform Eldrich that the items he found were cigarettes and a lighter.
Suddenly, there is motion from the other side of the convention center. A costumed man comes flying in from the outside and streaks towards the middle of the arena where he hovers.
It is a man wearing a deep blue tunic, black leggings and sleeves, and white boots, belt, and cloak. A large blue gemstone brooch is attached to the front of his cloak. The man looks about as if searching for something.
"I sensed great mystical evil in this place", he mutters. "Evil that shall fall before the mystic might of Dr. Wraithe!"

Roll Call: Blackout, Flux, Nemesis, & Gladiator
Nemesis has returned to the PRIMUS basement with the news that the Silver Avenger has gone nuts and attacked her. It is decided that Gladiator will stay and neutralize the wayward PRIMUS operative. Nemesis picks up Blackout from under his shoulders while Flux shrinks and hops on her shoulder.
The Silver Avenger can be heard calling out back where the heroes first entered the basement. Hearing that, Nemesis flies off the other way and searches for a back exit leaving Gladiator behind.
Locating a flight of stairs, Nemesis goes up them and emerges near the front lobby of the PRIMUS base. This part of the building is still intact. Spotting the front entrance, Nemesis flies that way and departs the PRIMUS base.
Once outside, Jen quickly accelerates to a faster velocity. Once confirming her destination, Nemesis streaks off in that direction. Flux can confirm that Jen actually flies faster than Goldstar!
Unexpectedly, a blast of energy shoots across Nemesis' flight path, forcing her to swerve. Look off to the right, you can see a winged man approaching, golden energy fading around his hands. The man wears an ornate white uniform with starry black sleeves and leggings. The trim on the gloves is bright gold, as is his hair and glowing eyes. He is easily recognizable as Quasar, the leader of the protectors!
"Halt criminals! You will not escape from Quasar! Surrender immediately!"

Tesla relates what happened to her and Lily in regards to Chimera and Harpy for his input.

Archangel takes flight once more, followed by Tesla in search of Lily. They locate her a few moments later down near street level in eagle form. Nearby, an ordinary man is raving about none of this being real…

As Jen swerves unexpectedly, Flux loses his grip and starts to freefall away.
Gah! Lose weight, glide, no-get bigger, less distance to fall, wait-go desolid-no damage that way ,uh what about falling through the earth, where's the ripcord, where'stheripcord...
Scrabbling madly for a chute release that isn't there, Flux tries to reduce his mass, increase his height, and go unsolid, all at the same time! The results are something he hadn't dared to hoped for.
What happened? I stopped falling! No, better, I'm moving through the air laterally. This is, is flying! Me flying!!
It was true enough. Flux could feel the sensation of controlled motion through the air-exhilarating in the extreme and much better than a parachute drop. It takes a moment for him to notice that he is also now at his full giant size.
Oops. This'll give the neighbors something to talk about. Better get back up there before Quasar gets the wrong idea
In the back of his mind Flux recalls Edgar saying that he had some control over gravity.

The zombie battles persistantly, but without magic to feed upon it falls to the combined forces of the non-magic combatants. The final stroke is delivered by Frostbite via a giant iceball that pins the body to the floor.
"That should be the end of it unless those other mages arrive to revitalize it."
With the passage of several long moments and no appearence of further enemies, Eldrich relaxes somewhat and asks the others about the items he has found. The White Crane answers him, but the answers are of little help.
A 'lighter' that produces a small flame, that is useful but what are 'cigarettes'?
The appearence of Doctor Wraithe is sudden and Eldrich is prepared to battle again but the others seem to know him so Eldrich will accept their judgment.

Searching for Armstrong proves a frustrating experience. The man in the white tux seems to have successfully fled the scene.
However, Lily does stumble upon a man who appears to be raving in confusion. Landing in a nearby alley, Lily shifts her form to that of an older hispanic woman. She walks over to address the man. "Are you all right, sir?"

Frostbite
Frosty watches as the others bound in and wither the zombie down to size. He quickly begins to generate a ball of ice on the ground before him and hoists it up in his hands. Waiting for the others to bound out of the way from the embedded zombie. He tosses his make shiftball with a yell "Incoming!!!"
The ball strikes the zombie and the monster doesnt even twitch. He silently watches the for a few moments realizing it isnt getting up He says, "Well I think rigamortous has finnally set in. Let secure the others for movement..."

Frosty watches as the others bound in and wither the zombie down to size. He quickly begins to generate a ball of ice on the ground before him and hoists it up in his hands. Waiting for the others to bound out of the way from the embedded zombie. He tosses his make shiftball with a yell "Incoming!!!"
The ball strikes the zombie and the monster doesnt even twitch. He silently watches the for a few moments realizing it isnt getting up He says, "Well I think rigamortous has finnally set in. Let secure the others for movement..."
In back of him a he hears an unfamiliar voice say,"I sensed great mystical evil in this place", he mutters. "Evil that shall fall before the mystic might of Dr. Wraithe!"

Serena eyes the battle as it comes to a close, having played very little part in it. At least good has triumphed and the Knight can take some comfort in that.
However, it seems that the battle as not yet reached its conclusion. A man comes flying in and claims that he is searching for mystical evil to combat. Serena immediately unsheathes her sword and prepares for battle.
But the strange man does not appear to be an enemy. Reaching out, Serena can determine that the man does not have any evil intent.
"I sense no malevolence from this individual", the Knight coolly states. Seeing that Frostbite recognizes the man, Serena will sheath her sword and move closer to the man to see what happens next.
"Beyond me as well," Serena agrees. "I fear that we shall never fit into this strange world. Nothing makes sense. What good am I if I cannot carry out the task of which I was bred?""I can only agree, Lady. The demons here are inexplicably strong and nothing like the tales of my home realm describe. These items have no magic in them yet perform like great artifacts. It is all beyond me."

Jen is momentarily surprised when Flux shrinks and jumps on her shoulder. "Wow! That's a neat trick! Now if you bounced around like Polaris does, you could call yourself the Flea! So where's where the heck am I going now?"
After picking up Blackout, Jen is off to the races. No sense heading back towards where PRIMUS is waiting, so it's slipping out the back way. Once outside, Jen accelerates after telling Flux to hang on tight.
Nemesis is happily flying along when an energy blast flies in front of her, forcing her to swerve. "Hey! What's the big idea?"
During all the excitement, Nemesis failed to not that Flux fell off. That is until she sees him super sized and flying down below him! "Gee! And he needed me to carry him?"
"That's good", Nemesis replies with a laugh. "I'm stronger than I look, but not overly so."Blackout chuckles at Nemesis' comment and pats his costume-covered belly. "I'm only as heavy as I appear, and I haven't even had a big meal today," he tells her, smiling deviously.
"Aye, aye, captain," Jen responds with a small salute. Thankfully, Flux agrees to this and the matter is settled."You may proceed, Nemesis and you should take Flux with you as well."
