New Frontiers #26
The basilisks have been defeated and returned to the flame that spawned them. The prisoner in the cage hanging from the gallows turned out to be a messenger that Validar had dispatched earlier from Pyris. Grondar heals the man's wounds, saving his life. Afterwards, Sherwood teleports Lodric to Jallarzi's estate so that he can be safely returned to Pyris. The trip will also allow the ranger/mage to inform his cousin on the latest news.
That matter taken care of, the scouts prepare to depart. The sky has continued to grow darker and nightfall is near. Coupled with the strange darkness over the sky in Rennydale, visibility is limited.
There is a loud crash far off in the distance, followed by a second and then a third. A fourth quickly follows. Those with sharper eyesight can see that the drawbridges leading into the town of Rennydale have been raised for the night.
One after the other, lights along the top of the wall surrounding Rennydale come to live. The source appears to be beacon lanterns that direct the light outwards from the wall top, across the moat, and over two hundred feet away from the city. The lights are arranged so as to overlap each other and surround Rennydale in a zone of light. Additionally, the light is constant and does not flicker like a regular flame would.
Up at the castle, several lights do come on, but they do not completely illuminate like those in the town do. Circling around the town, the scouts move to investigate the castle.
The terrain around the castle is bare. A few bones are found here and there, along with broken armor and rusting weapons. The area has been the site of numerous battles in the past. Any rocks, trees, or shrubs that one might have used to approach the castle unnoticed have been removed. There is no cover to conceal one with.
Furthermore, the highest tower in the castle can see over the tops of the nearest hills and down into their valleys. Any cover that may have been in these valleys has also been removed.
Fortunately, the lack of light around the castle does tend to conceal the scouts. As they draw nearer the castle, they can hear guards moving about, but are too far away to see them. The night is overcast and quite dark. Any of the noises heard are to far away to be seen with infravision.
The moat around the castle does present a major obstacle. It averages around thirty to thirty-five feet across. Along most of the castle there are small patches of land on the other side of the moat. About two to three feet between the moat and the castle walls. At the base of the outer towers that small patch of land is gone, but the distance across the moat to the tower wall is as low as twenty-five feet. The tower walls go right into the moat.
As Sherwood reported earlier, there is only one entrance into the castle. It is a drawbridge over the moat between two small towers. It is also the location of the trolls Sherwood spotted earlier.

GM Notes:
GM Notes:
So, how are the scouts going to get into the castle? As noted there is only one main entrance and a wide moat surrounds the castle. I'm assuming that the scouts haven't gotten too close to the drawbridge just yet as there is potential danger there. As far as you know, the drawbridge is still down.
Visibility is limited and infravision isn't much of a help in seeing those up in the castle. Coupled with their height and the width of the moat, they are beyond the standard range of infravision.
I'm also assuming that the main group is well out of sight of any of the town or castle's lights.
Now what?

Scouting operations
VALIDAR -
"You will have all that you ask of and more Validar. If it is acceptable to you, we should also look for ground that is easily defended if the need arises to fall back and regroup, after the engagement is begun."
Regardless of Validar's answer Laucian will make ready for the scouting of the terrain looking for ground cover, guard towers{and armory if he can make it out} and any guards{numbers, weaponry}.
"Very good. We need to know which way around the city will be more beneficial, if any, as well."
"I will work solo for now. If he returns before we do, Sherwood should have no trouble finding me. It will be my task to work down to the lower levels and seek out any prisoners. I'll try to get a feel for their numbers and condition, and whether we might benefit from releasing them during the battle."
"Very good, Kylie. Be careful on your infiltration. They may be lax, but the castle has been used to repelling invaders and may have some unexpected surprises in store."
Validar watches as the town begins to close up with the onset of night. The lights of Rennydale come on and Validar begins to wonder if it wouldn't have been easier to infiltrate in the light of day, when the soldiers lack of vigilence may have benefited them more than the now-removed shroud of night. "No matter," Validar will say. "We simply have to adjust our plans for approach to the castle slightly, giving the town more berth. I want everyone to be careful. Do not be too nonchalant just because we expect them to be lazy and enthralled by evil overconfidence. A sleeping dragon is a dangerous enemy."
Validar will lead the main group around the hills to the east and outside of the city lights. They will be looking for trouble.

Political issues
Kharyna -
Kharyna will turn to Swannie when the lights come on in the city. "This would be so much easier if we could just attack the castle with magick. Of course, this is a political issue and I imagine we want to take as many people alive as possible. Except for maybe those clerics."
"If things get out of hand, I'm going to start blasting things," she says without a hint of fear or worry. "Everything can be sorted out later, but I won't sacrifice anyone from our group just to save any of these people from Rennydale."
Kharyna will then approach Validar after the scouts move out, but before we leave the area. "I have some area affect spells available that may help this attack. I can create a Wall of Fog, I have a Hold Person and a Sleep, as well as Web and Levitate. I can make myself Invisible or another and also have a Silence spell. Most of the rest of the spells are individually offensive, except for Fireballs and an Ice Storm."
"With my Stone Skin in place, I could cast Invisibility on myself, move in closer to the castle, Levitate above the walls, and start casting spells. First the Fog Wall, Sleep, etc, and then some attack spells as needed. Should be able to take out those smelly trolls before they know what hit them, or at least hurt them really bad."
I understand that the spell list that was most recently submitted has not been changed to as yet. Hopefully we will take a break for resting and be able to do so.

Beginning of plans
VALIDAR -
Validar listens as Kharyna lays out some suggestions for the upcoming attack. "Your suggestions are interesting and very useful. This attack you suggest would help us to enter the castle and in coordination with a scout or two going over the walls would be useful in bypassing the drawbridge and gate for a main group."
Validar turns to address all his comrades. "My standard plan, which has worked well in many instances now, is to split our group into three sub-groups. We have used this already in Twin Forks with success and it was a very useful tactic in the Frontier lands in many instances. Each group covers the other and we are strong enough to complete such a tactic. The enemy usually reacts to one or two prongs of an attack, but rarely is there sufficient discipline in the troops to react to three. Our advantage in the make-up of us as individuals gives us an advantage over regular troops."
"If anyone has group or individual tactical suggestions, I am always ready to hear them. I believe that we cannot complete our plans until the scouts return with their information, but the beginnings of a plan are already well-formulated. We will need to take advantage of every ability and skill that we possess to ensure our success in this mission."

Laucian
As the sky begin to darken as Laucian makes ready to fulfill job of scouting the perimeter. A strange haze begins to loom above the castle and surrounding area and the Elfin ranger grumbles to himself, "This does not bode well for our efforts. It seems Tymora has deemed us unworthy."
Soon there are four loud crashes in the distance at first he thinks they are merely thunder but as he looks in the castles direction it is merely the sound of the draw bridges raising for the night.
As Arocken and himself move out Lights begin to spring into existence along the castle walls. The light seem to be continual and not of normal flame for they do not flicker in the wind. This unnatural light engulfs the town and illuminates even past its walls.
Steeling himself for the job before him, he urges Starfire on to scout the surrounding area. As he makes his rounds, his heart drops to the pit of his stomach as he scans the terrain in the growing dark. He dismounts for a moment and kneels down to the ground and picks up a handful of soil and let it fall through his fingers. This place as seen much ruin and despair, noting a rusty sword and a few scattered bones, They will be reminded of Ehlonna's gifts.
Riding through the night the towers of the castle stand against the darkened sky, only the lights illuminating them. Noting the largest one. "They will raise the alarm even before we can make out the castle walls..." as he realizes they will be able to see far beyond his present position.
Riding back to the rest of the column he will begin to report his finding. "The castle dwells in the middle of a barren wasteland. There is no vegetation nor boulders to shield us on our approach as well as bones and worn and broken weapons litter the earth, but this is not what troubles me. There is a tower at the center of the castle that may have the eyes of eagles, It will surely raise the alarm before we even come remotely close to the town/castle."
"There is no easy way to say this, there is no approach that would be beneficial to us, I fear that one is as good as the next."

Deception
Chareos
Sounds of thunder rumble in the distance he wonders what it could be as Lights begin to light up the sky. Realizing the answer of his question lies before his eyes in Rennydale he does not ask.
As the scouts return he will listen to what they have to say before offering his suggestions. Laucian soon speaks his mind and speaks of that one approach is as good as the next cover wise.
Chareos soon speaks up, "My friends, Perhaps deception is our ally in this situation? Validar, Lodric and his guards were messengers that were intercepted and dealt with accordingly. I wonder how they would react to a column of their own men? We only need to ride to the bridge crossing and recover their banner. We could conceivably ride under Rennydale's colors and heed word of the bridge's falling into enemy hands."
"This group could infiltrate the castle/town, make sure the draw bridges remain open as the rest of the force ride in."

"This group could infiltrate the castle/town, make sure the draw bridges remain open as the rest of the force ride in."
"That was my idea, when I took one of the Rennydale banners," Validar will unfurl the green banner of Rennydale that was stored away. "This may help rally others to our side and also help to allow us an easy approach to the castle initially."
Laucian - "There is no easy way to say this, there is no approach that would be beneficial to us, I fear that one is as good as the next."
"Based on that information, then unless we develop something different, then my original tactics should prove sufficient. We will see what the rest of the scouts say. How many guards are in each tower of the castle and do they patrol the walls with any diligence?"
Just an FYI to everyone, Mad clarified this for me and I am passing it on to make sure we are all thinking alike. The castle is not connected to the town. It sits on a ridge overlooking the town and blocking the way from the Broken Lands direction. The town is illuminated all around, but the castle not as much. The idea is that the castle can see approaches to the town better than approaches to the castle itself. Not as bright around the castle on this side. Also the beacon lights are illuminating out from the town and not as bright inside either. We may be able to avoid use of the town altogether or at most as an approach for a group flying the banner.

"I can not be sure. The most I saw were mere shadows, I am afraid that acursed light hampers my vision greatly. Perhaps one of the others had better luck.""Based on that information, then unless we develop something different, then my original tactics should prove sufficient. Talia
Talia:
As they draw closer, the scouts can see that the castle is very well defended against invaders. The moat is very wide and no doubt has some type of creatures in it. The drawbridge is the only real entrance available and according to Sherwood it was guarded by trolls.
"Seems to me that we didn't think this part out very well. Still, I may be able to get around all this security."
Talia moves towards the nearest corner of the castle, to where the towers rise up out of the moat. The dark-haired thief eyes the span carefully, a plan forming in her mind.
"I think I will be able to get across here. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll have to go on by myself. Go back and inform the others. I'll return as quickly as possible."
Backing up and staying in the shadows, Talia will run towards the moat and then use her Boots of Springing and Striding to leap across the water. Ideally she'll hit the side of the tower, but should stick thanks to her spider cloak. If she lands successfully, Talia will go up the wall and look for a safe place to enter, or continue on to the top of the tower. On with the mission!
Otherwise, she'll be swimming with the fishes!
Talia simply nods and prepares to move out with Sherra. "I'm more accustomed to operating in dungeons", Talia will say. "Breaking and entering like this is not my style, but one must adapt.""Talia and Sherra will have the duties to infiltrate the castle the deepest and see if you can locate where the priests and Cavius and any other subordinates are. Be careful. Your magical abilities as well as your natural skills are impressive, but do not risk unnecessarily."

Swanny
Swanny:
"Yeah, tell me about it. I can see their point about capturing those who are being influenced against their will, but not all these guys are being controlled. Is it my imagination or do these Cynalonian's do everything the hard way?"Kharyna will turn to Swannie when the lights come on in the city. "This would be so much easier if we could just attack the castle with magic. Of course, this is a political issue and I imagine we want to take as many people alive as possible. Except for maybe those clerics."

Looks like there'll be some excitement after all.""If things get out of hand, I'm going to start blasting things," she says without a hint of fear or worry. "Everything can be sorted out later, but I won't sacrifice anyone from our group just to save any of these people from Rennydale."

Lilia
Lilia:
Moving on from the cages, Lilia watches as the town closes up for the night and all the lights come on. "Continual Light spells cast inside beacon lantern's", she notes. "Coupled with the wide moats, a formidable defense against humanoids and their ilk. Their infravision has been negated and the darkness that they craved removed. A well thought out defense strategy against their most common enemy. However it is one that magic can easily bypass. They may be able to hold back a horde of orcs, but a small band of elves can easily penetrate."
Near the castle, Lilia and Lara move off to perform their scouting mission and quickly discover that entrance to the castle is not so easily gained. "Unfortunately, I already used my Alter Self spell back at the gorge. I have no other way to enter the castle apart from the main entrance, where the trolls are. Clearly, we cannot continue our mission without attracting attention. Best to fall back and report in."
Once back with the main group, Lilia will report what obstacles that were encountered.
"Had my spell selection been different, I could have easily investigated the castle. However, with trolls at the main entrance, it was impossible for us to pass unnoticed. How do you wish to proceed now?"
Unfortunately, Lilia has nothing constructive to add given her current spell list.
"I speak only the truth, clansman. Your hours of practice show."He will redden slightly more than his usual brownish skin, "You honor me. I spent many long hours honing my skills with the bow. Though I am afraid I have much more to learn for my aim was off my intended mark."

After hearing this Lilia will add her own opinion. "Unfortunately, Levitation only provides up and down movement. Even if cast at the edge of the moat, you may still be outside of spell range for some of the magicks you are suggesting or at best be unable to see a clear target. It is a risky move that may very easily backfire. Were this castle defended by elven archers, your protective magic would only last a few moments.""With my Stone Skin in place, I could cast Invisibility on myself, move in closer to the castle, Levitate above the walls, and start casting spells. First the Fog Wall, Sleep, etc, and then some attack spells as needed. Should be able to take out those smelly trolls before they know what hit them, or at least hurt them really bad."

Lara on the outside...
Lara:
"Lilia and Lara will be responsible for scouting the outer areas of the castle and the guard towers to the far side of the castle. If anyone has a chance to remove monsters quickly, then do so."
Lara nods as Validar gives out the instructions. How odd to be taking orders from someone other than Kharyna! Most unusual. Given the deep darkness, Lara saves her Invisibility spell. No need to cast it just yet.
However, the explorations don't turn out as well as expected.

Lara nods as Validar gives out the instructions. How odd to be taking orders from someone other than Kharyna! Most unusual. Given the deep darkness, Lara saves her Invisibility spell. No need to cast it just yet.
However, the explorations don't turn out as well as expected.
"Agreed. I've got fire magic for the trolls, but that would get everyone's attention. Lets go back and see what the others think. A direct attack at the main gate may every well be in order.""Unfortunately, I already used my Alter Self spell back at the gorge. I have no other way to enter the castle apart from the main entrance, where the trolls are. Clearly, we cannot continue our mission without attracting attention. Best to fall back and report in."
could we just knock..?
Sherra:
Sherra moves up with Talia and sees that the terrain and defenses do not seem to be very forgiving. Actually Sherra would have been a bit offended if this proved to be too easy.
Sherra will check the moat and try to determine its contents. Not one afraid of water, especially chilled water, she could easily make the swim, unless it proves to not be water or has fast and manueverable nasties lurking within.
The other option she whispers to Talia, saying if Talia takes one end of her coil of rope when she jumps across, Sherra can activate her Boots of Levitation and it should be easy for Talia to pull her across the distance of the moat since there would be no gravity and effectively no weight to Sherra at all as she hovered just above the ground.

"I don't think you'll have to go on alone if you give me but a moment to check out a few things," Sherra will whisper back, hopefully catching her fellow thief friend before she goes jumping across the moat.Talia moves towards the nearest corner of the castle, to where the towers rise up out of the moat. The dark-haired thief eyes the span carefully, a plan forming in her mind.
"I think I will be able to get across here. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll have to go on by myself. Go back and inform the others. I'll return as quickly as possible."

Sherwood
Sherwood:
And Sherwood teleports away with his charge.
"It's the logical thing to do", Sherwood quietly adds. "And will accomplish two tasks at the same time. I'll return as soon as possible.""That is a good idea, Sherwood. My man here is an example of what happens when information is not available. We will continue as discussed and meet with your when you have completed your tasks. Thanks you for seeing to Lodric's safety."
"The experience will be far gentler then riding on horseback, I can assure you, Grondar."Grondar looks over at Sherwood. "A good idea, as long as the transit won't be too hard on him. Please see to it that he is taken immediately into the care of one of the healers there." Grondar does his best to prepare the man for the trip.
And Sherwood teleports away with his charge.
I do what is necessary.
Talia holds the line...
Talia:
When reminded about her Boots of Levitation, Talia will say, "I had forgotten about those. Yes, I should be able to pull you across easy enough."
Talia will take one end of her climbing rope and tie it around her waist and let the rest of it play out on the ground.
"At the very least, should I come up short you can pull me out", Talia will add with a grin.
Talia is momentarily surprised, but will wait for her friend."I don't think you'll have to go on alone if you give me but a moment to check out a few things," Sherra will whisper back, hopefully catching her fellow thief friend before she goes jumping across the moat.

Kharyna -
Swannie -"Yeah, tell me about it. I can see their point about capturing those who are being influenced against their will, but not all these guys are being controlled. Is it my imagination or do these Cynalonian's do everything the hard way?"
"Still how do you tell who is controlled and who isn't? It's not like they have a large red C on their foreheads. They do seem to have more concern about the ramifications of their actions, but they are also in their own country, while we are merely vistors."
"Just give the word", Swanny will say with a grin. "I've got a special treat for those trolls at the drawbridge. Looks like there'll be some excitement after all."
"I for one do not think this will be a cut and dry as it appears. I personally think the regular four of us could take this place, but it would not be remotely easy. With the numbers we have and the abilities, I think we have a fight on our hands, but we should prevail, after some 'excitement'."
Some of the scouts return rather quickly and we find that there are not many easy ways to sneak in, especially with some of our magic depleted from the attack against the Tower at the Bridge.
Were this castle defended by elven archers, your protective magic would only last a few moments."
Kharyna's ears perk up at the comments from their elfin companion. "I am aware that Levitatiton is only for vertical movement. The idea is simply to gain height to see over the walls of the outer castle, thereby negating any of the benefits of the walls and tower roofs. I would have direct line of sight to the ballistas and any troops manning them as well."
"Furthermore, of the spells I suggested only Sleep and Wall of Fog have a range of less than 200 or so feet and some quite a bit more. Therefore, even with altitude and the slight distance of the moat, there is plenty of range. And from a sufficient height, anyone who can see me, I can also see, especially on the tops of those towers or walls, so that takes care ofmuch of the line of sight issues and with sufficient height, the ballists cannot reach me. If our estimations are correct, then my Magic Missiles could nearly travel the width of the castle and even my Fireballs have sufficient range to travel the breadth; even Hold Person has such range."
"As for the elven archers idea, I have much more capability at my disposal than you give me credit for, Lilia. Imagine for instance a Mirror Image, which I even have in memory, cast while Invisible on top of the Stone Skin in place already. That would eliminate much of the first volley and a Protection from Normal Missiles, which I intend to have ready, would make them even less of a threat. Not to mention my wondrous Spell Shield which will reflect back missiles at their shooters, including Magic Missiles. Those wondrous elvin archers of yours would be hitting themselves with their volleys on any misses and I would not be so vulnerable as one would imagine."
"So as you can see it is not as dangerous as one might imagine. Especially since I will not be alone in the attack. All of the rest of us will also be involved in the attack. My tactics are but a small portion of the complete plan. But I am curious, where do you seem to find risk in a move such as this, other than having my Levitate dispelled and falling?"

VALIDAR -
Laucian -"I can not be sure. The most I saw were mere shadows, I am afraid that acursed light hampers my vision greatly. Perhaps one of the others had better luck."
"We will know when they all return."
Once back with the main group, Lilia will report what obstacles that were encountered.
"Had my spell selection been different, I could have easily investigated the castle. However, with trolls at the main entrance, it was impossible for us to pass unnoticed. How do you wish to proceed now?"
"We will see what the others report and proceed from there. If we feel we need more reconnaissance, then we will rest and do so. Otherwise, we will make our attack plans final, rest and prepare for the battle."

"Hey, you're the one who wanted to start blasting and sort things out later. I figured those with any common sense would get out of the way."Swannie -"Yeah, tell me about it. "Perhaps, but then again this is not the sort of thing we would do on our own. I doubt there is much treasure to be found in this place. No coins, jewelry or enchanted items that we are so fond of here. While this has been a pleasant diversion, admittedly I am looking forward to going back to doing our own thing. lilia recants
Lilia:
The Elf Maiden stoically listens to Kharyna's response before speaking in her own defense.
"My apologizes, Kharyna of Mystra", Lilia says with a slight bow. "Apparently I spoke with only hearing a part of the conversation and not its entirety. It was my understanding that you were considering launching this attack at night and that is where my concerns arose form. I withdraw my remarks and bow to your superior magical prowess in this matter."
Lilia will bow again and excuse herself.
With that, Lilia will go locate her mount and wait for what we re going to do next.

Sherra checks the moat and finds it to be plain water. She can occasionally hear something in the moat break surface, but nothing is in sight. Rather than risk swimming with some guardian beasts, Sherra agrees to be pulled across by Talia.
Talia then prepares to try and jump across the moat near one of the corner towers. She ties a rope around herself and lets is drop near the bank of the moat. After taking a running start, Talia starts covering ground in large leaps and bounds before finally making the big jump. Propelled by her magical boots, Talia leaps clear across the moat and lands on the side of the tower, sticking there!
However, she lands with a loud thud, breaking the relative silence of the dark night. Noise and commotion can be heard from the top of the tower. The only openings in the tower and outer wall of the castle are small slots for arrows to be fired out of.
Now what?

Scouting the Castle
Kylie:
The scouts move to check on the possibilities for entering the castle. Unfortunately, the combination of moat and guards make it a difficult proposition. However, Talia and Sherra seem to come up with a plan that will work well for them. Lilia and Lara should be able to complete their assignment from the outside. This leaves Kylie to get herself inside.
Fortunately, she has an option that should work. Kylie will leave her bow, arrows, shortsword and much of her gear with Corley, as such things could interfere with her work - particularly if she needs to adopt a disguise. She does keep several of her knives strapped about her body and most of her magic items with her.
Pulling the Ebony Fly from her Girdle of Many Pouches, Kylie activates the magic figurine and mounts up. Flying high over the castle, she seeks a secluded spot to land, using a Sleep spell if necessary to ensure a surrepticious arrival.

Twiddling our thumbs...
KHARYNA -
"Hey, you're the one who wanted to start blasting and sort things out later. I figured those with any common sense would get out of the way."
"I did say only if things got out of hand, 'psycho' Swannie," Kharyna will say with a chuckle.
Or taking some time off in the tropics and having fun. Cold weather and riding horses all the time just doesn't agree with me anymore!"
"Yes, this doesn't seem to be much of a lucrative adventure by any means," Kharyna will say somewhat wistfully. "But we are here as a favor to my mentor Jallarzi. She has been very helpful to us in the past and I am sure will be again. Once this is completed, then we can get back to the Towers of Gaz and my own mission for Mystra. Afterall, there is much more treasure to be had there, as we already know."

Kharyna listens to Lilia's response quietly. "It's alright, Lilia. Everyone should be proud of their own people and heritage. But it is a common mistake in this world to underestimate what we see and how capable our foes are. In general, I have found, that the one who underestimates their foe is the one who ultimately pays for it in the end."
"We were accosted by a group of roudy dwarven mercenaries at the Tower of Gaz who had been routinely strong-arming any adventurers to the towers and 'taxing' them on gold that was brought out. We didn't go along, they underestimated us and now they're all dead. Much like this castle and the rulers here. The underestimate attack thinking they have struck outside their own realm now. They will learn their error very quickly." Kharyna just smiles as Lilia bows and steps away.
Validar - "We will see what the others report and proceed from there. If we feel we need more reconnaissance, then we will rest and do so. Otherwise, we will make our attack plans final, rest and prepare for the battle."
"Sounds good to me. I am getting a little anxious to have some action, just like Swanny there. But I would love to be able to change my spell selection a bit. Hopefully nothing goes wrong with any of the remaining scouts out there."

Some questions about the layout of the area near the castle:
The river comes from the north, and the castle is on a ridge. Does this mean that the river is coming from an even higher elevation? Is the castle on the low point of the ridge or the high point? (Confused because the high point is most defensible, but low point is the most likely path for invaders as mentioned.) Is it in a pass of mountains or hills? Trying to figure out if this is the high point in the area or not.
How far from Rennydale to the castle?
How steep is the ridge not on any path from Rennydale to the castle? Is it rideable? How high?

Talia
Talia:
The dark-haired thief curses to herself upon making so much noise. "Got to work on my landings in the future", she thinks to herself. "Still landing hard on stone usually does make noise."
Talia will crouch down and lay flat along the wall, in hopes that anyone who does look doesn't notice her. If obviously spotted (shouts, alarms go off, fired upon) Talia will get up and leap off the wall and back out over the moat yelling for Sherra to, "Pull me in!"
Once back on the ground, Talia will beat it with Sherra back to the waiting others.
If not noticed, then Talia will get up and look around. If it seems clear, Talia will pull Sherra across and then head up the wall. The arrow slits are too small to slip through, so she'll have to head to the top of the wall and look for a safe place to go over. Someplace away from the guards.

"Admittedly, I am looking forward to that. Too bad the towers are underground, but the rewards are more than worth it. Hopefully we can finish up this task in a quick and efficient manner. I hope Talia's okay out there. I hope she doesn't do anything stupid in an attempt to prove her worth.""Yes, this doesn't seem to be much of a lucrative adventure by any means," Kharyna will say somewhat wistfully. Corley:
"Proceed with caution, Lady Kylie. And know that if you need assistance, I shall ride like the wind to save you."
Corley accepts Lady Kylie's weapons in confusion at first. He in turn will see that her belongings are safely stored on her horse.Kylie will leave her bow, arrows, shortsword and much of her gear with Corley, as such things could interfere with her work - particularly if she needs to adopt a disguise.

GM Notes:
Kylie produces her figurine and summons up the Ebony Fly. The magic item grows up to a pony-sized fly. Mounting up, Kylie is off and into the sky. The only sign of her presence is the tell-tell buzzing of the fly as it flies along.
Rising high up high, Kylie can see the castle down below. There seems to be some activity in the highest tower. Several individuals are there, gathered around a large brazier. Each of the towers has a guard or two on them, but the walkways in between seem clear. Kylie's too high up to see the ground that clearly right now. Where do you wish to land at?
Talia hugs the wall waiting to see what happens next. A soft buzzing sound comes to her ears. The guards notice it too and stare up into the sky trying to find the source. They appear to have forgotten about Talia.
Now what?

Talia sneaks in...
Talia:
Seeing that her landing has gone unnoticed, Talia will whisper for Sherra to rise up so that she can be pulled across. Once that is accomplished its up to the top of the wall. Seeing that the guards only seem to be on the towers and not along the walkway, Talia will creep up on top.
Now to find our way inside and down.
Since the towers are occupied, its time to go down over the wall to ground level. Sticking to the shadows, Talia will attempt to find a way to get inside that is not guarded.

Sherra watches as Talia clears the distance smiling at her success until she lands hard on the stone wall. Sherra cringes and then crouches down, letting her Armor of Blending gain the most of the dark night and terrain. Long tense moments pass until a strange buzzing is heard. Sherra would swear it was a fly or bug of some sort, but it sounds too distant for her to have heard, unless it was a giant one. Not familiar with this area, but with all the water around there could be dozens or more breeds of bugs, giant or otherwise.
It seems there is no challenge or alarm raised, so at Talia's prompting, Sherra levitates up enough to be pulled across. She will make her way up with Talia, using the Boots if she risks making too much noise climbing. Sherra will look around, staying close to Talia so they can whisper or signal as needed, and look for ways in without being noticed as well as anything unusual.

Chareos
Chareos recalls Kharnya mentioning Trolls are vunerable to fire which raises an idea in his head. " If these trolls are indeed guarding the gates then I may have something to aid us in our assult." Pulling a potion bottle from his pack, "This is a fire breathing potion, I believe it contains 3 more drafts. If we do infiltrate the castle under Rennydale's banner I would suggest the first two men in the column perhaps drink it in case they don't receive us kindly. It will give the front pair a weapon that the guards will not see until it is exumed from their mouths, giving the rest of the column the time they need to react to orders or any activity that we may come across."

VALIDAR -
Chareos offers his suggestion about his fire-potion.
"Perhaps it would be better for the 2nd line of people to be empowered by it. Then they can use the potion and the front line can still be in place to attack. Another option would be to give it to the scouts who will be attempting to open the gate and drawbridge for us as we approach."

Chareos considers this then offers his reply, "As long as those in the second line realize the range that this potion can cover. It gives the drinker the power to spew a single breath wave if you will, much like that of a dragon. It maybe used better in the scouts' hands if they are to hold the drawbridge untill reinforcements arrive."
"Though I must warn those who do volunteer to consume it. When I bought this potion the merchant warned me not to keep it down for too long."

Scouting the Castle`
Kylie:
Flying high over the castle, Kylie is able to get a feel for the layout and the disposition of forces. Since all of the towers, both on the wall and on the castle itself appear to be occupied by guards, that limits her choice of landing places.
Kylie swoops down, trying to find a location to land on the roof of the castle that is well away from any of the towers. If there don't appear to be any good options there, she'll fly over to the long buildings along the front wall of the castle and land on the roof of one of those.
"I shall, Lord Corley. And thank you," Kylie says, giving Corley's hand a squeeze.Corley wrote:"Proceed with caution, Lady Kylie. And know that if you need assistance, I shall ride like the wind to save you."

Scouting the Castle
Grondar:
Listening to the discussion of plans, Grondar nods gravely. "It is clear that the castle is well defended. I don't like our chances if the scouts cannot get the gates open. While we have some magic that would help at least some of us get over the walls, it is clear that they have magic of their own to oppose us with.
"Since they are using trolls as guards at night, the cover of darkness is less benefit than it might otherwise be. Plus, I believe the darkness would actually hamper some of our number. Rather, a daylight raid might be best - perhaps in the morning shortly after the guards change out.
"That way, we could use the cover of darkness to get into position. Also, the scouts would only have to keep the gates open, rather than actually open them. Having the drawbridge down will make crossing the moat much easier."
Chareos' mention of the fluid in the flask catches Grondar's attention. "I might be willing to try that. It seems I have a cast-iron stomach, anyway," he concludes with a chuckle.
