New Frontiers #25

Having restored the leaders of the Bridge at Elderhold, the Guardians continue onwards riding deeper into Rennydale. Sherwood changes back into his usual eagle form and flies on ahead. Laucian and Arocken ride ahead to scout for potential dangers up ahead.

From here on, the sky is dark with the haze spotted earlier, giving everything a dire tinge. Even the sun does not shine as brightly here. The road passes through several more hills and draws, but none of the crossings are guarded. No peasants or other creatures are spotted either.

A few hours later, Sherwood begins to spiral over a spot directly along the riding path. The action alerts the elfin Rangers to potential trouble up ahead and they move in to investigate.

Cresting the last hill before Rennydale, they can see what Sherwood was indicating. The road ahead passes beneath a gallows frame hung with three iron cages. Two of the cages contain rotting corpses and rats feeding on the remains. The third cage contains what appears to be a young man who is slumped over. The frame and cages is about 100 yards ahead.

Laucian's sharp elfin senses detect the presence of other creatures lurking in the brush along the side of the road near the gallows. As he and Arocken watch, a reptilian like creature steps out into the road. It is about seven feet long, has dull brown scales that change to yellow on its underbelly. The creatures eyes glow pale green and it has four sets of legs. The creature, about the size of a horse, moves across the road and into more brush. The rangers believe they can make out a second beast in the brush as well.

Overhead, Sherwood continues to fly onward towards Rennydale. The town of Rennydale can be seen from the top of the hill. Rennydale is situation in a valley, so common in this region. At the far end of the valley up on a ridge sits the castle of Lord Cavius.

The castle itself is small and rectangular in shape. The outer wall of the castle is two stories high and a walkway on top of the battlement connects individual towers. There are two small towers on either side of the main entrance; a portcullis and draw bridge arrangement. Four larger towards, complete with a mounted ballista sit at the corners of the castle. In between the corner towers, except where the main entrance is located at, is another tower midway along the walls. The whole structure is about 200' x 400' in size.

Inside the outer walls is the castle proper. More towers rise up from the castle, rising to 4 to 5 stories in height. More ballista's can be seen on the tops of these towers. There are a total of five towers rising from the main part of the castle. Seen from above, the castle rests along the most likely path invaders from the broken lands with take to reach Rennydale.

The castle itself is surrounded by a moat. Water flows from the north and has been diverted around the castle. Passing the castle, the water continues down into the valley and again has been diverted to surround the town of Rennydale. A total of four bridges over the river lead into Rennydale. Each entrance has its own drawbridge, portcullis, and tower arrangement. More ballista's are mounted here as well.

The entire village is surrounded by a twelve foot high wall that has seen much damage and numerous repairs. Small towers are interspersed along the way, but are smaller than the ones near the drawbridges.

There doesn't seem to be many guards on duty at the moment. Only a very few people can be seen moving among the city. It's almost like a ghost town. The drawbridge closest to the Guardians is open and a few guards are posted there.

GM Notes:

That should be enough to get things going. The two basilisks near the gallows are well out of gaze range. They also don't seem to be aware of the elfin rangers present either. They are around 100 yards away.

Sherwood will also note four trolls guarding the entrance to the castle. It is now late in the afternoon. You've got about an hour of daylight left before darkness falls.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Grondar:
Ivy wrote:When Grondar does ask, Ivy will relate that she has access to certain protection spells outside normal clerical magic. "The Blue Lady has give me access to defensive and protection spells so that I may better serve her. When I grow more skilled and powerful in my magicks, I may be able to do battle against those undead who wield powerful magick. Some day I will battle lichs and win."
"Ahhh. That would explain why I had heard of no such blessing. Quite a gift, I must say. I pray that you will see that day when no undead thing may stand against you. A worthy goal, to my eyes."
"I find comfort in that, friend Grondar. Between our skills, we may be able to defeat these zombies on our own allowing the others to concentrate on those enemy we are not so proficient in defeating."
"I do not doubt that we could, Ivy. However, considering the enthusiasm some of them exhibit," Grondar pauses to glance meaningfully at Lord Corley in particular, "we may not be able to hold them back from joining in."

They ride for some while. Grondar continues to work on teaching Sherra his native language, while remaining aware of their surroundings and the potential for danger.

Eventually, the town of Rennydale is located by the scouts. As well, there appears to be something of a trap prepared not far ahead. The scouts report sighting a couple of the gaze lizards, along with some unfortunates in hanging cages.

Grondar turns to Validar and Chareos. "It seems we have time to prepare for the battle with these beasts, and any guards that may be hiding with them. Shall we test out Chareos' tactical suggestion? If so, whom should I be teaming up with, and where should we be positioned?"

Regarding the Iron Mind spell, I assumed that Grondar would only be familiar with the blessings he has access to and those that are reasonably common (i.e., those in the priest part of the PH). Any others would have drawn the same comment.

Kylie:
Validar wrote:"Actually," young Kylie of Elcadan, "I never said that 'death' was glorious. I have no intention of dying myself. Only that the 'cause' is glorious and that death may be an inevitable by-product of such a quest. And while I agree with the ugly and unpleasant part, I seem to be a living example that death does not have to be final."
Kylie purses her lips. "I doubt we can all count on being as lucky as you in that regard, Validar."
"That is a good observation, Kylie. That is why I have taken this flag of Rennydale. If there is any attack at all by us, having this flag may indicate to the soldiers that those truly loyal to Rennydale and not the corrupt rulers have come and they will flock to our side. It will at the least give them a rallying point to rise up against their masters."
"I hope that is all it will take," Kylie says. "Just in case, I have a spell that may be of some assistance. I will try to keep a copy ready in case we need it."
Laucian wrote:The Elfin ranger can't help but be relieved as he is paired up with Arocken. "When we set out from our base camp when would you wish us back? Before first light?"
This is a good question, and Kylie listens for an answer.
Corley wrote:Corley looks on a little bit confused. "Did I say something amusing, Lady Kylie?"
"Yes," she says, continuing to chuckle. "But it would be difficult to explain."
Sherwood wrote:"Then you need to practice your spells more than you have been. That is how one learns what can be done with a particular spell. Unfortunately, circumstances have kept us on the road for weeks now with little downtime. Learning new spells under such conditions is difficult. My advice, for the moment, is to go with the spells that you do know and trust. Don't leave anything to chance in battle."
"Unfortunately, I can't say that I am entirely certain of any of my spells at this point. I'll just have to stumble along as best I can, and hope nothing goes terribly wrong in the meantime. I look forward to having some time to just practice, as you suggest. However, under the circumstances, I suspect that may be some time in coming."
"Perhaps she'll learn a thing or two", Sherwood responds with a wink.
"From you, uncle? Well, maaayyybe..."

They ride until the scouts find signs of the town and it's defenses. The story of the people in cages shocks Kylie, though she's certainly seen her share of suffering in the past. "We must try to free that poor man. No one should have to suffer like that."

Grondar brings up the question of tactics, and Kylie nods, needing some clarification herself.

Most of Kylie's uncertainty is also mine. Much of it lies in the details of interpretation (as we have seen) regarding the points that are not necessarily detailed in the spell descriptions. Additionally, I post from work as often as home, and I don't have my books available there.

Laucian
Arocken and Laucian soon ride out in front of the column looking for any potential dangers. For most of the ride the hills and valleys begin to pass more easily.

High above in the distance the eagle form of Sherwood begins to circle as if it was a bird of prey. Riding toward the sign they crest a hill where gallows lay with two having the remains of two unfortunate souls the third a slumping body. "He may yet be alive. If we free him he may be of use to us," he thinks to himself.

Movement from one of the bushes catches his eye and he motions to it to Arocken. A beast ambles forth from the brush. The first thing that catches the ranger's eyes is the glow of its pale green eyes, its coloring. He watches for a few moments judging its speed when it ambles to the brush on the other side. Scanning back where the beast came from he spots movement but the brush is too thick for even his elfin sight to penetrate.

Returning to the column he retells what he had seen, " There are three gallows up ahead, with brush on either side. There was one creature of which the Commander spoke of with eerie pale green eyes to be sure of and perhaps a second. The brush was too thick to be sure of it."

" The beast ambled into the western brush. The scent of the remains in the gallows may have aided us for it did not seem to catch our scents. There is something else. One of the gallows contained a body slumped over, whether they live I do not know. But if they do they will be of use to us."

Laucian will wait to see what the others make of what they have told him and be ready to ride bow in hand with an arrow ready.

Chareos listens as the scouts tell of the Dangers ahead. " I agree if this person yet lives they may be of some help to us. We must free them."

" I may have overlooked something. If any of the mages have Color Spray in their memories it may be of help. It temporary blinds the opponent. Perhaps it will help with the gaze affects as well?"

Grondar's question of tactics in the upcoming battle catches his ear and he turns to Validar to see what their leader has to say. "If you wish to test it out, now would be a good time." He will wait to see what Validar has to say before going further.

Lyonessa:

As things finish up with hearing the tales from the men who were under evil's sway, various members of her new group speak up about her concerns, most notably Laucian, Chareos and Validar. Lyonessa listens to the words these three men speak and shows visable signs of comfort. She notes how confident all three of them, and most of the group actually, seem to be. I have witnessed but a small portion of their actions, but their words ring with truth and strength. Truly good company I have found here.

The time arrives to ride forth once more. With the vigilant scouts, Lyonessa plays a low but happy melody, humming through most of the words to the particular tune chosen so as not to draw undue attention but to help the main group of riders cope with the foul-seeming surroundings. Once it is apparent the elven scouts have been alerted to something, she stops playing, waiting as patiently as possible.

Soon Laucian returns with grim description of what lies ahead. Lyonessa agrees the man should be helped if alive, at least removed and lain to rest properly if not. I fear more attrocities just lie ahead for us to witness and deal with.

The assault is coming...

VALIDAR -

Kylie purses her lips. "I doubt we can all count on being as lucky as you in that regard, Validar."

"My dear Kylie, there are many things I believe in. However, luck is not one of them. People make their own 'luck'."

"I hope that is all it will take," Kylie says. "Just in case, I have a spell that may be of some assistance. I will try to keep a copy ready in case we need it."

"I do not know whether the site of their own flag at the head of an assault on the evil leaders will be enough to be a rallying point, but I think that the soldiers will understand what is happening. A noble's flag is his communication on the battlefield. The soldiers know to follow the flag and to assemble on its location as the battle progresses. And the loss of a battleflag is often demoralizing to those on the other side. Anything your spell can do to assist with the situation, will be most helpful."

The Elfin ranger can't help but be relieved as he is paired up with Arocken. "When we set out from our base camp when would you wish us back? Before first light?"

This is a good question, and Kylie listens for an answer.

"We should make our plans to attack as soon as possible. We can group up again before first light and then retire and rest. Once our plans are completed we can make the attack at dusk tomorrow or by dawn of the next morning at the latest."

"We must try to free that poor man. No one should have to suffer like that."

"In most cases I would say that the man probably deserved his fate for some vile transgression. In this case, considering that the current ruling party is our enemy, then we can likely assume that he is a foe of our enemy and therefore a potential ally. Perhaps even someone important. We will free him in a few short moments."

Grondar turns to Validar and Chareos. "It seems we have time to prepare for the battle with these beasts, and any guards that may be hiding with them. Shall we test out Chareos' tactical suggestion? If so, whom should I be teaming up with, and where should we be positioned?"

"Our two horn groups should engage as previously detailed. Otherwise, we will have Arocken, Lara, Kharyna and Grondar attack the right side, with the rest attacking the one on the left. Let's try not to use too many highly noticeable spells. I would rather not alert the entire castle with a Fireball going off just now. Let's be quick and deadly with our attack."

"I agree with Validar. Given how recent the man would have been locked in there and still possibly be alive, then he most assuredly did something to offend those in command who are held in the sway of vile evil," Acerion adds.

"If, for some reason, he is in there because indeed he did commit some foul act himself of his own free will, we can uncover that for ourselves easily enough once he is down from there."

Acerion dons his helmet and readies himself for the coming combat when something comes to his mind, "Do we have any idea what the gaze of these beasts might have upon our steeds? I can only surmise that a basilisk's traditional gaze would turn a horse to stone as easily as a man. This is a bit more of a unique creature we will be facing, but is it something we need to consider?"

As they ride, Kylie listens to Lyonessa's music, finding it quite pleasant. "That's a nice tune, Lyonessa. What's it called?"
Validar wrote:"My dear Kylie, there are many things I believe in. However, luck is not one of them. People make their own 'luck'."
Kylie stops, surprise on her face. "So you arranged for your own resurrection? How did you do it? That must have required substantial magic!"
"I do not know whether the site of their own flag at the head of an assault on the evil leaders will be enough to be a rallying point, but I think that the soldiers will understand what is happening. "Okay. I don't know how effective it will be, but it may help."
"We should make our plans to attack as soon as possible. We can group up again before first light and then retire and rest. Once our plans are completed we can make the attack at dusk tomorrow or by dawn of the next morning at the latest."
"Hmm..." Kylie murmurs. "We can scout the place tonight. Then, tomorrow night, we can infiltrate and get in position to open gates and whatnot to help the rest of you enter. That should work."
"Our two horn groups should engage as previously detailed. Otherwise, we will have Arocken, Lara, Kharyna and Grondar attack the right side, with the rest attacking the one on the left. Kylie nods, then moves to form up on the left side of the road with the others. She prepares her bow and readies an arrow, a second held in her hand for rapid fire.

"Good point," Grondar says. "As long as there aren't too many of them, this shouldn't be too tough a fight. I suspect we can manage it with minimal magic."

"My dear Kylie, there are many things I believe in. However, luck is not one of them. People make their own 'luck'."

Kylie stops, surprise on her face. "So you arranged for your own resurrection? How did you do it? That must have required substantial magic!"

Validar is unmoved by the naivete of the young lady from Elcadan. "Young Kylie, we can create favorable situations for ourselve without having to set up every step along the way. By being honorable and brave and forthright, we affect everything in the world around us. I do not think that things happen completely at random, but that does not mean that all good results came from our direct intervention, even though we had a hand in the events. And I am talking about more general situations than the event that lead to my death and re-birth. That is something that I do not have all the facts for, but I can assure you that it was not some random, lucky event that resulted in my return to the Seekers."

"Hmm..." Kylie murmurs. "We can scout the place tonight. Then, tomorrow night, we can infiltrate and get in position to open gates and whatnot to help the rest of you enter. That should work."

"My only question is whether the castle is more 'alive' at night or during the day, due to the monsters about. We will base our time of attack on the learning of that information," Validar will offer. "If night is deemed to be the safest time to attack, then we shall attack then otherwise, we may attack at dusk. Either way, this evil in Rennydale will soon fall."

Anything your spell can do to assist with the situation, will be most helpful."

"Okay. I don't know how effective it will be, but it may help."

"That is all anyone asks," Validar responds.

"Talia and Kylie will be responsible for freeing the man once we have dealt with the basilisks. I am sure your skills are suited to such a task. The archers will continue to cover the surrounding area and those from the 'horns' will keep in their groups and advance on the flanks slightly towards the city, forming a sort of 'protective bowl' around the gallows and our unfortunate friend there."

Grondar - "Agreed. At the least, perhaps we can learn something more of the situation from him."

"He may have some useful knowledge. And if not, I believe we will some have all we need to liberate our Rennydale allies."

"That is a good question, Lord Acerion. I would tend to imagine that the beasts whether typical basilisks or this new variety would affect anything with eyes. Sherwood, what is your experience with such a situation?"

"All part of my oath to destroy all undead in the world, my friend."
"I do not doubt that we could, Ivy. However, considering the enthusiasm some of them exhibit," Grondar pauses to glance meaningfully at Lord Corley in particular, "we may not be able to hold them back from joining in."
"Nor would I wish for them to hold back. As long as they are destroyed, then it matters not who lands the final blow. It is the deed that concerns me, not the means at which the destruction of undead is carried out."

After a pause, Ivy will add with a grin, "But it would be well advised to stay clear of Lord Corley. I'm still working on removing the stains from his battle rage back against the bandits outside of Twin Forks."
They ride until the scouts find signs of the town and it's defenses. The story of the people in cages shocks Kylie, though she's certainly seen her share of suffering in the past. "We must try to free that poor man. No one should have to suffer like that."

Chareos listens as the scouts tell of the Dangers ahead. " I agree if this person yet lives they may be of some help to us. We must free them."
"I must agree. This is most cruel, even for the nobility. I fear that based on what we've heard about Rennydale that the worst is yet to come."

When the decision is made to attack, Ivy will gather with Acerion and Swanny in preparation of riding in with them. Once close enough, Ivy will dismount and attack the beast's flank, while avoiding looking at the creature's eyes.

Sherwood:

After finishing up his explorations, Sherwood will rejoin the others, reverting back to his human form before his Polyself expires.
Sherwood considers for a moment before speaking. "You're more skilled than you give yourself credit for, Kylie. Most spells perform just as written in your spell books, so some studying does seem to be in order. Of course, on the other hand, you're not as dedicated of a mage as the rest of us are, so some confusion should be expected. You're young and still searching for your place in this world."
"I may have overlooked something. If any of the mages have Color Spray in their memories it may be of help. It temporary blinds the opponent. Perhaps it will help with the gaze affects as well?"
"It may or may not be effective," Sherwood will say after considering. "The basilisk already has poor eyesight, so blinding it may not be that effective. As for the spell blocking its stoning or charming gaze, only experimentation will reveal its effectiveness. It's not surprising that they would be out in the day time. Basilisks are comfortable in the light of day, while trolls are nocturnal creatures. Furthermore, the main entrance of the castle is guarded by several of the beasts. Those attempting to lower the drawbridge and raise the portcullis may have quite a fight on their hands."
"Unless we wish to use the battle as a distraction to slip the scouts into the city. I personally would just assume not do that, but it is an option. Furthermore, I would suggest waiting just a little bit longer so that twilight will further conceal our actions from those who may be paying attention. Another option would be to lead the beasts away from the gallows allowing a small group to determine the condition of the man."

"That is a good question, Lord Acerion. I would tend to imagine that the beasts whether typical basilisks or this new variety would affect anything with eyes. Sherwood, what is your experience with such a situation?"
"The gaze of a basilisk will turn any living creature that meets its gaze into stone, or charm them as these basilisks brought forth from the brazier seem to do. So mounts are also at risk."

Trying to recall where he fits in with this "Bull's horn" arrangement, Sherwood draws his longbow and readies his flight arrows for firing.

Final preparations...

VALIDAR -

Ivy - "I must agree. This is most cruel, even for the nobility. I fear that based on what we've heard about Rennydale that the worst is yet to come."

Validar looks over at Ivy as she speaks and considers her words. "Does she have such a low view of all nobility or is it just her experience with Elcadan?", he thinks to himself. "Despite the lack of controls on the Dukes and Barons of Cynalon, most of our nobles are not vicious, cruel animals. Perhaps your experiences with the nobles of Elcadan have unduly influenced your view of us, but I can assure that if a man deserves to be put to death in Pyris that it would never be done as such."

Sherwood - "It's not surprising that they would be out in the day time. Basilisks are comfortable in the light of day, while trolls are nocturnal creatures. Furthermore, the main entrance of the castle is guarded by several of the beasts. Those attempting to lower the drawbridge and raise the portcullis may have quite a fight on their hands."

"Then, as I suspected, there may not be any advantage either way to attacking by day or by night, except against the few human guards there are. And those I am not greatly troubled about."

going to the gallows...

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:
They ride for some while. Grondar continues to work on teaching Sherra his native language, while remaining aware of their surroundings and the potential for danger.
Sherra pays close attention as she begins to learn more of the advanced and challenging aspects of the Dwarven language. She continually practices, even during times of rest stops or solitude, of which there haven't been many thus far.

Sherra also spends some time listening to Lyonessa's playing and how it almost seems to be as natural an element as birds singing or other wilderness noises one would expect to hear.

Once it becomes apparent there indeed are creatures ahead, and from the sounds of it, these unique basilisk-like creatures, Sherra grabs her bow and readies an arrow. She holds it notched, in one hand, so she can still guide her mount until an appropriate time to engage these creatures. She takes her position and waits until everyone is ready to move out.

Kharyna -

Kharyna will be rather nonchalant about the upcoming attack on the basilisks. After all, their small group had taken on much worse opponents than this.

"I have a couple of Magic Missiles that I can use," she says simply. Not having had a chance to change her spell list yet to one with more of the useful spell, she still does have a couple available to her.

Kharyna doesn't expect the battle to take long with the group assembled, but just in case she has her wand ready as well.

Laucian listens as the others decide the tactics in which they will use for the coming battle. It is decided that they will use the Horns as Validar indicated. Taking up his Long bow and knocking an arrow to it and take his place among the archers.

Chareos makes ready for the coming battle taking his quarter staff in hand. When the battle begins he will use his magic first and then judge his role further as the battle continues. If the need arises he will bring his quarter staff to bare.

He just can't help but wonder if these such creatures of the brazier are somehow linked to each other. And if so does the one commanding such creatures see what they see.

VALIDAR -

Lord Corley will saddle up and grab his lance and ready it for battle. Once ready, the young noble will ride up beside Validar.

"I dare say that very little of this basilisk shall remain once our lances have done their work!"

"Indeed you are correct, my friend," Validar will respond. "Although if our allies do their tasks as well as I expect, we may not have a living target by the time we reach it."

--------------------------------------------------------------

Battle Plan Recap for clarification -

There will be two flank attacks.
Group 1 will be: Validar, Po, Corley
Group 2 will be: Acerion, Aswansea, Ivy
Group 1 attacks on the right flank, Group 2 on the left.
After the basilisks are taken care of, both groups advance forward some to control the area and allow the lock-pickers to free the prisoner.

Main group is split into two as well (per Chareos suggestion):
Group A will be:Chareos, Laucian, Lilia, Lyonessa, Sherra, Sherwood
Group B will be: Arocken, Lara, Kharyna and Grondar
Both groups will attack by range and move in slowly. Group B attacks the basilisk on the right and Group A on the right. Talia and Kylie will move in and free the prisoner.

If something beyond this happens, we will deal with it as best we can. It is important to not alert the castle we are here and then to destroy everything we encounter.

Post Continued:

En route to Rennydale, the Guardians have come across several prisoners rotting away in cages hanging from a gallows. Close by several of the 'enchanted creatures' that they've been hearing about have been spotted. The creatures are basilisks, a beast that can turn people into stone with just a look. A magical brazier in the possession of Lord Cavius is said to be able to conjure up a special type of basilisk that instead of turning its victim into stone, compels them to enter the Beleme Swamp and seek out the temple of the Lord of Corruption.

Having mapped out their strategy, the Guardians move forward to defeat the basilisks and free the lone surviving prisoner. The main body of the adventures moves forward in two groups to draw the basilisk attention and attack with ranged weapons. On the left flank of this group are Chareos, Laucian, Lilia, Lyonessa, Sherra, and Sherwood. On the right flank are Arocken, Lara, Kharyna, and Grondar.

Circling around on the left flank are Acerion, Ivy, and Swanny, while Validar, Corley, and Po come in from the right flank. While this is going on, Talia & Kyle are sneaking towards the cages and will attempt to rescue the prisoner.

The main group moves forward and as they draw closer can see two basilisks. Still well outside of range of the beasts gaze attack, they begin the assault.

The left hand group targets the basilisk on the left. Chareos tags it with a trio of Magic Missiles. Lilia and Sherra both connect once with arrows, while Laucian scores two strikes. Both of Sherwood's arrows miss their target.

The onslaught gets the basilisk attention and it begins to move towards its attackers. Chareos prepares to cast another spell while the bowyers continue to fire. Lilia connects once more, while Sherra misses with both of her shafts. Laucian is on target and after his arrow impacts the beast drops.

Meanwhile, similar results are achieved on the right hand flank. Kharyna opens things up with a swarm of four Magic Missiles. Lara follows up with two arrow hits, the first striking the beast in the flank, the second a devastating shot to the head. Follow up arrows and bolts from Arocken and Grondar put this basilisk down.

The flankers move closer to their targets, only to have them already removed from the field of battle. The right-hand flankers note a third basilisk concealed behind the brush and out of sight of the main body. Lord Corley spurs Destrier on and lowers his lance. The lance is driven deep into the basilisks side, scoring a critical hit. Validar rides in behind Corley and cleans up what little remains of the basilisk. A quick reconnaissance of the area turns up no other basilisks.

Over at the gallows cages, Kylie and Talia move in to rescue the man in the cage. They can hear his low moans as they approach. As they get closer they can see that he has been severely tortured and bears many, many wounds. It's a miracle that he's even still alive. Even more curious, the man is wearing a uniform that bears the symbol of the Barony of Pyris. The man is delirious at the moment and does not respond to questioning.

The lock on the cage is easy to pick, but given the current state of its occupants, the thieves are reluctant to move him.

GM Notes:

That turned out to be a horrifically easy battle! Couple of really nasty critical hits mixed in there as well.

There have been a couple of updates in the New Frontier's reference page. XP's have been calculated and handed out. The new numbers are reflected on the Adventurer's Roster page. At long last, Validar has gained a level! Only took him about fourteen years real time.

There's also a new reference page as well. This one covers the appearances of the adventures and some of their physical data. The idea was to provide a place where you could find descriptions of the various characters without having to hunt through old posts. There are only a couple of characters there at the moment and everyone is more than welcomed to write up their characters descriptions. Comments and suggestions for the page are welcomed.

That brings us to the eternal 'Now What?'

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Acerion:

Acerion moves his warhorse into position alongside Ivy and Swanny. Getting his axe ready, he patiently awaits until enough time has passed and the trio charges off, taking their position along the left flank and closing the gap between themselves and these vile creatures.

The sound of arrows in flight and magic being released fills the air as Acerion sees the beast closest to them fall due to the barrage sent forth by the main group. Pressing on, he catches glimpses of the other basilisk fall as well. As he brings his warhorse to a stop, he thinks he spots Corley as he charges a third basilisk, driving his lance solidly home. He watches as Validar moves up and, seemingly half-hearted, puts his lance through it for good measure.

Removing his helmet, he remains atop his warhorse and surveys the terrain. A hint of disappointment can be seen upon his face and he turns in his saddle and addresses the two ladies, "It would seem our foes are no more. Although I expected a bit more of a fight from them, it rings with good tidings for the outcome of this campaign to free Rennydale and its people. At least none of our people were hurt at this early stage, that is the true benefit of a sweeping victory such as how this engagement ended."

He will nod in respect to both Swanny and Ivy, letting a smile dance on his lips when he looks at Ivy. He will then wheel his warhorse to survey the terrain one last time, leaving his helmet off so his long hair flows over the shoulder plates of his armor. If there are truly no more foes that can be seen, he will only then return to the main body of the group and see if the prisoner is indeed still alive.

The atrocities continue...

VALIDAR -

Confident that their strategy is not only sound but likely to support them should they encounter a small army of basilisks, Validar rides forward, leading his small group to the right flank. When everyone is in place he will calmly close the visor on his great helm and raise his sword. With a look across the way toward the left flank, Validar will drop his sword to signal the charge and the attack.

Validar spurs Havok on and he can hear the two warriors with him rush forward as well. He does not look back, trusting that the two main groups will move forward and begin the missile barrage soon enough. As they reach a full gallop, Validar lowers his lance. Corley, showing his typical enthusiasm, rides harder than Validar and moves slightly ahead on the charge.

A moment later, the barrage begins and Validar sees the beast filled with shafts both magickal and normal. The basilisk drops to the ground, blood streaming from its wounds. As they close around the bushes, Lord Corley sees another target and drives his lance deep into the creature's flank, as it lets out a tremendous roar which turns to a gasp. Corley's strike was true and punctured the beast's vital organs. Left to its own, it migth die anyway, but Validar rides by and pierces its neck with his lance, looking more toward the castle and gauging whether they were noticed.

The others ride up and hold the ground past the cages, but there seems to be no further danger.

The two lockpicks move up and open the cage freeing the man, and as Validar watches some of the procedings, his eyes narrow as he sees the all too familiar uniform of his own barony. He quickly leaves his post and rides to the cage and dismounts.

"Ivy, Grondar, can you help this man? He is a subject of Pyris and part of the messenger party I dispatched to Rennydale a short time ago."

Validar wrote:"Talia and Kylie will be responsible for freeing the man once we have dealt with the basilisks. I am sure your skills are suited to such a task."
Kylie smiles over at Talia. "I think we can handle that - if you think you can handle the beasts without us." Truth be told, she's just as happy to miss the fight.

The battle goes remarkably quick. Even as she and Talia work on the lock, she hears the fight start and end in quick order. Fortunately, they are equally fast with the lock.

She is surprised by the livery of the man in the cage. While Kylie is no expert, the markings on his garb seem similar to what she has seen Validar display and also on various banners around Pyris. Could he be one of Validar's people?

The question is answered soon enough as Validar comes over immediately. "So he is one of yours. I thought he might be. I am sorry," she says, a grim look on her face.

At the approach of the healers, Kylie steps back to allow them room. As she does so, she notes that a third beast was slain, and Corley has an exhulatant look on his face.

"I take it you met with greater success here today?" she asks, grinning.

Grondar chuckles, a deep sound like rocks grinding together. "Sound advice, my lady."

Focussing on his target, Grondar is pleased that his group manages to slay their target swiftly. That done, he looks around, noting that not one, but two other beasts were destroyed nearly as quickly.

Grondar is making a quick circuit of the group to determine if anyone was injured in the brief altercation, when he hears Validar's summons. He quickly moves over to the gallows and peers into the cage at the badly abused man. Looking up at Validar, he says, "This man appears to have been thoroughly tortured, but I will see what I can do for him." Grondar applies his skills, both mundane and magical, in an effort to help this poor man.

Swanny:

The grand attack begins-- and is over a few moments later. All is said and done before Swanny could even attack! Sigh. Now that was disappointing.

"Well, it seems that we were not needed at all", Swanny says to her riding companions. "I'm not used to things being this dull. Before joining up we were in at least half a dozen life or death battles a day. This is almost boring. Oh, well. At least sacking the castle should generate much more excitement."

With everything seemingly under control, Swanny will ride towards the gallows intent on seeing to Talia's safety. As the least combat experienced of Kharyna's small group, Swanny always tried to keep an eye on her for safeties sake.

Ivy:

Clutching the reigns of her horse tightly, Ivy rides after Acerion and Aswansea towards the waiting beasts. She glances back and can see the archers sending numerous shafts toward the basilisk, enticing them forward. They don't seem to even be aware of our presence as we circle towards them. Alas, the arches do their work too well the monsters are slain without incident.
"It would seem our foes are no more. Although I expected a bit more of a fight from them, it rings with good tidings for the outcome of this campaign to free Rennydale and its people. At least none of our people were hurt at this early stage, that is the true benefit of a sweeping victory such as how this engagement ended."
"Yes, this does bode well for us", Ivy agrees. "Perhaps it is as Lord Validar said. We are strong enough to carryout this dire task and beat back our enemies. Still, we shall see what transpires against foes who have intellect and are not little better than animals."
He will nod in respect to both Swanny and Ivy, letting a smile dance on his lips when he looks at Ivy.
Ivy will smile back, before looking away, her cheeks reddening slightly. "We will battle together another time, Lord Acerion."

Turning her mount, she follows Swanny to the gallows. Grondar is already there examining the wounded man, so Ivy will give the others a quick check to make sure that they are no longer living nor that they are undead.
"Ivy, Grondar, can you help this man? He is a subject of Pyris and part of the messenger party I dispatched to Rennydale a short time ago."
"Your messenger is in good hands, Lord Validar. Grondar will see to his wounds."

Corley Charges!

Post by Corley »

Corley:

The call to battle is sounded and Lord Corley rides forward on his new warhorse. Lance lowered, Corley leads the charge towards the distant monsters! Arrows and magicks come flying in and the monster is quickly and efficiently downed. Spotting another monster further along, Corley charges fearlessly towards it. Lowering his lance, Corley drives the long weapon into the creature flank. Releasing his weapon, Corley rides on past and behind the creature. Looking back, Corley can see Lord Validar dispatch the enchanted creature.

"Well struck, Lord Validar! Indeed, as promised our lances did dispatch this foul beast in a most efficient manner!"

Lord Corley will dismount and move to retrieve his lance from the creatures flank. Placing his foot on the beasts side for leverage, he pulls his lance free of the monsters flesh. After accomplishing that task, Lord Corley will return to his mount and clean the blood from his lance. Once that task is complete, he'll ride to join the others.
At the approach of the healers, Kylie steps back to allow them room. As she does so, she notes that a third beast was slain, and Corley has an exultant look on his face.

"I take it you met with greater success here today?" she asks, grinning.
"Indeed I have, Lady Kylie", Corley responds with an equally large grin. "A third of these beasts did fall to our lances further back! It was a quick battle, but a glorious one!"

"That's a chance I'm willing to take," the dark haired scout adds with a grin. At last, finally some way she can contribute to this mission that doesn't require combat.

Talia is pleased the battle is handled so efficiently and quickly. Likewise, the lock on the cage is just as easily dealt with.

"He looks on death's door", Talia notes. "We better not move him until a healer can examine him first. We may cause more harm in the attempt."

When the others arrive, Talia will step away and keep an eye out for trouble.

VALIDAR -

"Talia and Kylie will be responsible for freeing the man once we have dealt with the basilisks. I am sure your skills are suited to such a task."

Kylie smiles over at Talia. "I think we can handle that - if you think you can handle the beasts without us."

"I am sure we will manage," Validar will respond with a smile of his own.

"Well struck, Lord Validar! Indeed, as promised our lances did dispatch this foul beast in a most efficient manner!"

"It seems you were correct after all, Lord Corley. Your lance struck true and deep. The glory of this kill is yours. I merely finished the job, my friend." Validar will lift the visor on his helm as they watch the valley and then the messenger is revealed and Validar heads to him.

Could he be one of Validar's people?

The question is answered soon enough as Validar comes over immediately. "So he is one of yours. I thought he might be. I am sorry," she says, a grim look on her face.

"I thank you for your concern, Kylie," Validar will say grimly as he watches Grondar use his healing on the man. "The guards must have already been slain. Only the messenger remains. His name is Lodric. his family has served our barony well for many generations."

"This man appears to have been thoroughly tortured, but I will see what I can do for him." Grondar applies his skills, both mundane and magical, in an effort to help this poor man.

"I am certain you will do your best, my dwarven friend. He is a loyal subject of the barony." Validar continues to watch grimly as the man is healed. It is likely that he will not regain consciousness for some time after his ordeal. "We will need to bring him along or else perhaps create some secure location for him to rest. What are our options, Sherwood?"

Ivy - "Your messenger is in good hands, Lord Validar. Grondar will see to his wounds."

Validar signals for the onslaught to begin and Laucian takes aim at their target. Adjusting for the wind he lets loose and is pleased that his arrow finds the mark. He quickly nocks another arrow and takes aim and fires and soon finds his mark again. As he nocks another arrow he notices many of his fellow archers arrows also find their target. He takes aim again and his aim is true. The beast staggers for a few moments then falls to the ground unmoving, blood issuing forth from its wounds.
"Well fought my friends," he will say to the others.

He looks around at the other beasts and is pleased to see them brought down as quickly. He makes his rounds among the others to see if any are injured. Seeing that none need his help he moves to the gallows and sees the poor tortured soul being healed by Grondar. It is soon found out that the man is wearing a Pyris uniform.

Chareos--
"Perhaps they merely are confined to the dungeons my friend, though doubtful. I am surprised the man is alive. It sends a powerful message to anyone who crosses their path to see a messenger in the gallows."
"What if this Lodric never relayed the message he was entrusted? I hope it was not of significant importance."

"We shall find out in time Chareos. He is in no condition to answer us now." Taking a bit of his dry rations and waterskin from his pack, he will make some food for this Lodric."See to it that he eats sparingly when he awakes. He would not have had food or drink for some days now." He will wait by Grondar's side and see if he can be of use to the cleric.

He will say a pray for the two unfortunate souls within the gallows while they wait for the man to awaken

Once the man awakes and has something to eat he will move to the dead beast and look at its clawed paws trying to distinguish the type of print it would make then look at the tracks around it for future reference. Once doing so he will nock an arrow to his bow and move to make a perimeter facing the castle watching for movement as Validar has suggested.

Chareos

The battle begins as Validar drops his sword and Chareos wastes little time as he begins to cast his spell. Upon completion three energy beams issue forth and find their target as some arrows from the others imbed in the beast's hide. He begins to cast another spell but the beast is quickly brought down by his companions. The other beasts are brought down with equal efficiency.

With the battle over Chareos congratulates the others in a well fought battle. "Well done my friends. If only all are battles were as well planned as this."

He lingers for a moment at one of the beast's sides then moves to the Gallows with the others. Kylie and Talia soon pick the lock and Grondar goes to the man's aid. It is soon learned that the man is not only from Pyris but also a messenger of the court, "What manner of man would imprison a messenger under a flag of friendship? It is despicable."

Validar--
"I thank you for your concern, Kylie," Validar will say grimly as he watches Grondar use his healing on the man. "The guards must have already been slain. Only the messenger remains. His name is Lodric. His family has served our barony well for many generations."

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Validar signals the beginning of the attack and Sherra draws forth her first arrow, which as it turns out will be the only one of hers to hit, not only in the initial barrage but in her second volley as well. Thankfully, the combined efforts of all the other archers and the magic released against these beasts prove more than enough. I definitely need more practice, unless Tymora was leveling the playing field today to humble me. Let's just hope I don't need further humbling anytime soon. Sherra still manages an easy smile because the efforts of the entire group seemed to work well together, and this battle at least was over quickly.

Moving up to the cages, Sherra notes that Validar and Corley seemed to have found a third beast lurking somewhere and dispatched it. Poor beast, never had a chance, she thinks, keeping her smile in place. Noting that Laucian and Acerion seem to be scanning for any other potential threats, Sherra moves in to find out the commotion going on over at the cages.
"Ivy, Grondar, can you help this man? He is a subject of Pyris and part of the messenger party I dispatched to Rennydale a short time ago."
Validar's words bring her quickly over the remaining distance left to cover, and she watches as her dwarven friend begins to work his healing on Validar's messenger. She struggles with thoughts in her mind about what all this could mean, and looks over at Validar with concern on her brow. To do this, such an open and bold statement, and yet leave their lands so lightly guarded and patrolled. Only madness could reside in these lands.

Grondar casts Cure Light Wounds on Lodric and that greatly improves the young man's condition. He is no longer in danger of dying. While not in the best of shape, he can relate that he was taking a message to Lord Cavius at the direction of Lord Validar. Once finished in Rennydale, he was next to deliver another message to the Duke of Corunglain.

The group had some difficulty in getting past the Bridge at Elderhold, but were finally allowed passage. Shortly after that, they were attacked by what appeared to be Rennydale soldiers. Lodric has lost all track of time and has no idea how long he has been in the cage, nor does he know what happened with the others riding with him.

The other victims in the cage are all deceased and none detect as undead.

Also a few minutes after being defeated, the fallen basilisks vanish in flash of fire, leaving nothing but bloodstains and burn marks on the ground. Their tracks do remain and Laucian will be able to commit them to memory.

Sherwood:
Validar -
"Then, as I suspected, there may not be any advantage either way to attacking by day or by night, except against the few human guards there are. And those I am not greatly troubled about."
"We can always use a direct attack at the front gate as a diversion to allow the scouts to sneak into the castle. Indeed, I doubt the guards or even a few trolls will prove much of a challenge to our frontline fighters. Draw everyone's attention away from the real invading force."

The battle begins and Sherwood shows his less than stellar skill with the bow. That's why he mainly sticks to magic. At any rate, the battle is quickly over thanks to superior tactics. The basilisks also vanish in a burst of fire. Not surprising if they were summoned creatures. They usually do vanish after the spell ends or they are slain in battle.

After the excitement ends, he joins the others by the gallows.
"We will need to bring him along or else perhaps create some secure location for him to rest. What are our options, Sherwood?"
"We can neither bring him with us into battle, nor can we leave him unattended. A third option is to teleport both of us back to Jallarzi's Estate. I need to fill her in on what we've uncovered in Rennydale anyway. We'll need to inform our other operatives the potential danger that now exists in all the cities in this part of the kingdom. He have no idea just how many have fallen under the influence of this Lord of Corruption, so we'll need to be vigilant. Continue on with the scouting as planned and I shall return in a few hours."

Assuming that there is nothing else to deal with, Sherwood will teleport away with Lodric.
I do what is necessary.

Lara:

"Not shabby", Lara notes as her second shaft strikes the beasts head.

To Kharyna she'll add, "Swanny may be top dog when it comes to hacking things with a sword, but she can't touch me when it comes to bowmanship! Never mess with an elf armed with a bow."

Afterwards, Lara will maintain her position and chat with Kharyna while the leaders plot our next move.

Lilia:

Taking aim, Lilia launches her arrows towards the distant basilisk. Only one of her shafts hits the target, while two of Laucian's do. The follow up barrage ends the short battle and it was Laucian's arrow that finally felled the beast.

"Well shot, clansman", Lilia will compliment. "You skill with the bow is impressive."

After the short battle, Lilia is content to remain on guard and keep an eye out for potential trouble from the nearby human settlement.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

VALIDAR -

Chareos - "Or perhaps they merely are confined to the dungeons my friend, though doubtful. I am surprised the man is alive. It sends a powerful message to anyone who crosses their path to see a messenger in the gallows."
"What if this Lodric never relayed the message he was entrusted? I hope it was not of significant importance."

"With the change in the leadership of Rennydale, the message may have been ignored or been enough to anger Cavius and his allies enough to cause this horrible treatment of my messenger. In either case, it does not change the current situation in any way."

Validar returns Sherra's look with a nod of recognition. He watches as Grondar heals the man and Laucian sees to getting him some food.

Validar will thank Lodric for his service and apologize for the pain he encountered. "Had we known the situation here in Rennydale, I never would have sent you here."

Sherwood - "We can neither bring him with us into battle, nor can we leave him unattended.

"That is a good idea, Sherwood. My man here is an example of what happens when information is not available. We will continue as discussed and meet with your when you have completed your tasks. Thanks you for seeing to Lodric's safety."

Sherwood - "We can always use a direct attack at the front gate as a diversion to allow the scouts to sneak into the castle. Indeed, I doubt the guards or even a few trolls will prove much of a challenge to our frontline fighters. Draw everyone's attention away from the real invading force."

"It is a possibility. Seeing the sweeping victories we have had so far and the discontent some of our fighters have been having, I dare say that a direct attack would clear some of the tension that has been building. As was stated before, there is no reason to believe that we cannot storm the castle directly with nothing more than a frontal assault. However, I think it is wise to complete our plan after the scouts make a more thorough search."

Once Sherwood heads out with Lodric, Validar will round everyone up. "It is time for the scouting groups to begin their missions. Kylie, you have the choice of continuing alone or joining one of the other groups with Sherwood now indisposed. "

"Laucian and Arocken will be primarily responsible for scouting the surrounding terrain and looking for good approaches to the castle should any exist. Anything further you can determine will be beneficial, especially troop movements and details, as well as guard towers."

"Talia and Sherra will have the duties to infiltrate the castle the deepest and see if you can locate where the priests and Cavius and any other subordinates are. Be careful. Your magickal abilities as well as your natural skills are impressive, but do not risk unnecessarily."

"Lylia and Lara will be responsible for scouting the outer areas of the castle and the guard towers to the far side of the castle. If anyone has a chance to remove monsters quickly, then do so."

"We will all meet back up behind those hills to the east," Validar will say as he points over to the area indicated. The rest of us will try to circle the area and clear out any resistance we encounter. Then we will control those hills for the scouts return."

"Any questions?"

Lyonessa:

truly a remarkable spectacle to watch these adventurers move into action as one. Lyonessa moves with her assigned group, remaining vigilant even though she is lacking in any beneficial spells or weapons at this distance. it is over before it even begun.

Lyonessa moves forward not knowing how serious the injuries this man may have suffered, but Grondar has the situation well in hand and soon the man is coherent. a messenger from Lord Validar's realm. Are these others, long expired in the cages, messengers from other lands?

Debating moving to check the basilisks, the option is stolen from Lyonessa as they vanish, leaving only small evidence that anything occured here. what wondorous potions or other magics could have been devised if there had been time to gather ingredients from them

Sherwood departs, and soon the scouts will seperate and strike out once more. Danger is still high, but the group is confident at their success, and why shouldn't they be? Lyonessa prepares to move once more.

Laucian

As their beast is dispatched by a final arrow let loose by his bow his fellow clansman offers congratulations.

"Well shot, clansman", Lilia will compliment. "Your skill with the bow is impressive."

He will redden slightly more than his usual brownish skin, "You honor me. I spent many long hours honing my skills with the bow. Though I am afraid I have much more to learn for my aim was off my intended mark."

Soon Validar speaks of the scouting teams' assignments.

"Laucian and Arocken will be primarily responsible for scouting the surrounding terrain and looking for good approaches to the castle should any exist. Anything further you can determine will be beneficial, especially troop movements and details, as well as guard towers."

"You will have all that you ask of and more Validar. If it is acceptable to you, we should also look for ground that is easily defended if the need arises to fall back and regroup, after the engagement is begun."

Regardless of Validar's answer Laucian will make ready for the scouting of the terrain looking for ground cover, guard towers{and armory if he can make it out} and any guards{numbers, weaponry}.

Kylie:
Corley wrote:"Indeed I have, Lady Kylie", Corley responds with an equally large grin. "A third of these beasts did fall to our lances further back! It was a quick battle, but a glorious one!"
"Good. It is nice to see you so pleased," Kylie replies.
Talia wrote:"He looks on death's door", Talia notes. "We better not move him until a healer can examine him first. We may cause more harm in the attempt."
"Ah, I believe you are right. I'm sure one of them will be along momentarily." And indeed they are, as Grondar approaches moments later and sets to work on the badly-injured man.
Validar wrote:"I thank you for your concern, Kylie," Validar will say grimly as he watches Grondar use his healing on the man. "The guards must have already been slain. Only the messenger remains. His name is Lodric. his family has served our barony well for many generations."
"Lodric," Kylie says, more to herself. "I pray he recovers well and fully."
Chareos wrote:"Or perhaps they merely are confined to the dungeons my friend, though doubtful. I am surprised the man is alive. It sends a powerful message to anyone who crosses their path to see a messenger in the gallows."

"Any questions?
Kylie listens as the situation is discussed and assignments are handed out. Pausing to consider for a moment, Kylie then replies to Validar's question. "I will work solo for now. If he returns before we do, Sherwood should have no trouble finding me. It will be my task to work down to the lower levels and seek out any prisoners. I'll try to get a feel for their numbers and condition, and whether we might benefit from releasing them during the battle."

Grondar:
Validar wrote:"I am certain you will do your best, my dwarven friend. He is a loyal subject of the barony." Validar continues to watch grimly as the man is healed. It is likely that he will not regain consciousness for some time after his ordeal. "We will need to bring him along or else perhaps create some secure location for him to rest. What are our options, Sherwood?"
Grondar gives no reply as he focusses his attention on healing the man.
Laucian wrote:Taking a bit of his dry rations and waterskin from his pack, he will make some food for this Lodric."See to it that he eats sparingly when he awakes. He would not have had food or drink for some days now." He will wait by Grondar's side and see if he can be of use to the cleric.
"Thank you, Laucian," Grondar replies, accepting the food and drink. "I will see to it that he doesn't overwhelm his stomach."
Sherwood wrote:"We can neither bring him with us into battle, nor can we leave him unattended. A third option is to teleport both of us back to Jallarzi's Estate. Grondar looks over at Sherwood. "A good idea, as long as the transit won't be too hard on him. Please see to it that he is taken immediately into the care of one of the healers there." Grondar does his best to prepare the man for the trip.

Once Sherwood leaves with Lodric, Grondar will join up with the others and prepare to support their actions as laid out by Validar.
