Crucible #28 - "Danse Macabre"
The Vigilant has teamed up with the Young Champions to investigate various troubles throughout San Diego...
Roll Call: Eldrich, Frostbite, Serena, White Crane, and Polaris
The heroes have chased the demonic duo of Devilspawn and the Denier, along with their human companion, the Aviator, into the San Diego Convention Center. The arena is being used as a temporary morgue in the wake of yesterdays life altering events. Hundreds of body bags lay on the floor.
Inside the Convention Center, the heroes have engaged the enemy. The Aviator was the first to fall. The Denier seems to be made of sterner stuff while Devilspawn teleported away from White Cranes attack.
Devilspawn reappeared on the other side of the arena. Frustrated in her search to find the body of the Monster, she casts a simple locator spell. Her magic streaks off to find the corpse she is looking for. Unexpectedly, the magic does a sudden ninety-degree turn and strikes one of the numerous body bags. Even more unexpectedly, the body bag sits up!
Devilspawn regards this with a measure of surprise. "I'm pretty sure that wasn't supposed to happen… But whatever happens, I'm sure that it'll be lots and lots of fun!"
With out warning, White Crane is on Devilspawn once more. The white clad martial artist strikes Devilspawn across the back with her staff. 'Spawn is violently thrown forward, crashing amongst the bags and seems to be unconscious.
"I hope it was as fun for you as it was me," White Crane notes as she eyes the unmoving Devilspawn. "How can one so attractive dress in such a degrading manner?"
With the Aviator down, everyone else attacks the Denier!
Eldrich sends a magical bolt at Denier, but meets with only limited success. The Denier spreads his large wings and flies up towards Eldrich. The demon just barely misses with a punch at the hovering mage.
Down on the ground, Serena pauses long enough to cast a Divine Aid spell upon herself, boasting her strength and speed. Polaris bounds in and leaps at Denier, but misses the flying demon. Frostbite launches another ice ram, but is wide of the mark this time.
Eldrich teleports away from the menacing Denier, while Serena rushes to join the fray. The Knight runs and leaps into the air. Blessed Salvation is swung in a wide arc, striking the Denier across the chest. The demon cries out in pain and is flung backwards, crashing awkwardly amongst the dead. Denier is disorientated, but very much conscious.
Back by White Crane and Devilspawn, there is more movement by the body bag that just sat up. It slowly unzips to reveal middle aged brown haired man wearing a polo shirt and shorts. His eyes are unmoving and eerily wide open.
White Crane inadvertently gasps upon seeing him, the small woman clutching her staff even tighter. "What are you?", she wonders.
The man rises to his feet, ignoring White Crane's query. Instead, he walks a few steps towards Devilspawn. The red-clad demoness is just beginning to come around as the undead man reaches down and grabs her!
"What the--?? Hey, I'm usually the one who does the grabbing here, buster!", Devilspawn complains. "Not that I mind a little physical contact, doncha know?"
Looking back, Devilspawn is shocked to see an animated corpse is the one grabbing her! "EEEWWWWW!! Diabolical zombie-like dude! Like, hands off coffin critter!"
The man says nothing, but continues to hold tight to Devilspawn. Colorful energy gathers about the undead man's hands. Even more energy rushes to join that energy from Devilspawn's body! In response, the dead man grows even more robust. Hollowed out cheeks become fuller and his skin expands away from his bones.
"Hey, get your freakin' hands off of me, creep! I'm not that kind of girl! Actually, I am that kind of girl, but I have a headache right now, so leggo!"
The undead man ignores Devilspawn's complaints and begins to grow even larger, gaining height and weight! Suddenly he's seven feet tall and continuing to grow!
With the lull in the battle against the Denier, everyone in the Arena can see the dead man growing and siphoning energy from Devilspawn!

Roll Call: Tesla & Lily
Elsewhere in San Diego, Lily and Tesla, accompanied by Archangel of the Young Champions came across a battle between Harpy and a man calling himself Armstrong. Harpy fled when the heroes arrived on the scene, with Archangel giving chase.
Lily transformed into a gorilla and landed on the rooftop, joined by Tesla. The electrical heroine just blasted Armstrong into a Heating/Cooling unit on the rooftop, but he just shook the attack off. Undaunted, he approaches Lily once more.
"And just what kind of contract are you attempting to fulfill", Lily questions.
"Collection of specimens", Armstrong answers in his slow, deliberate speaking style.
"However," Lily adds, "committing an assault on either of us is likely to land you in jail. You are already subject to charges by that winged woman who just left - should she choose to press them. You don't need more trouble piled on your plate."
To that Armstrong simple shrugs and says, "Who cares?"
Seeing Armstrong go after Lily again, Tesla lets him have another electric blast! The large black man is struck once more and sent flying backwards again. This time over the edge of the building!

Out at the PRIMUS Headquarters in Coronado, the rest of the heroes are in the basement. Psi-Lad was just rendered unconscious by Gladiator after behaving strangely. It is believed that someone else was controlling him. Nemesis flies out of the young mentalist while the others continue to search for people to help.
While Gladiator carries out one injured man, Blackout examines the others. One, a woman is dead, but another man is only unconscious. He is next taken out.
Noise from an adjacent corridor attracts the heroes attention. It sounded like something just blew a hole in one of the walls. Debris could be heard landing. Nearing the corridor, they stop when a jet of fire erupts from the passageway and strikes the opposite wall!
"Why?!", an angst filled voice cries out from down the other corridor. "Why did I change again?"
Another blast of fire follows.

Armstrong seems about as impressed with Lily's legal advice as Tesla does, but at least Lily is keeping his attention. However, he doesn't seem to be concerned and looks ready to collect Lily as a "specimen," whatever that means, and that just won't do.

"That's great Lily! You confuse and slow them down by spouting legal banter and I'll mop 'em up! Good teamwork," Tesla will say as she flies over to where Armstrong took his bad fall and looks down to observe her handiwork.Seeing Armstrong go after Lily again, Tesla lets him have another electric blast! The large black man is struck once more and sent flying backwards again. This time over the edge of the building!
Flux
Flux will shrink down and work his way behind the attacker, going desolid where needed to pass through walls, debris, ect. to get in position. He will evaluate the situation from there.
I just know we're going to see our three friends from Otherwhere before too long. Can hardly wait.
"See if you can get a medical team down here too!" Flux shouts out.Nemesis flies out of the young mentalist while the others continue to search for people to help.

Dead Man Rising
Eldrich Arcane
The red demon is strong in many ways. It seems to resist my bolts and Lady Serena's sword as well as the ice attack from the elemental man. It is agile too. Nothing like the stories of demons back home. Still, if people here can be exceptional then why not demons too?
Eldrich is startled by it's physical attack and Steps away as Lady Serena strikes it down.
Eldrich is about to continue the attack when he sees the large man holding a demon and seemingly draining away it's magic to grow stronger!
And what manner of strangeness is this? Not an ally of the demons, that is certain. But is it an ally of ours or another danger to us?
Eldrich is uncertain which target is the priority here or even if magic is the best response to the large manlike figure.

Overgrown Zombie with bad fashion style
Frostbite
Down on the ground, Serena pauses long enough to cast a Divine Aid spell upon herself, boasting her strength and speed. Polaris bounds in and leaps at Denier, but misses the flying demon. Frostbite launches another ice ram, but is wide of the mark this time.

He watches as Polaris leaps through the air at the demon. Seeing an opportunity to tag the Denier he lets out with another ice ram and is wide of the mark hitting some seats in the upper deck. "Whoops! I gotta work on that aim.. I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside." he thinks to himself.
Soon Serena leaps in and makes contact with the flying demon, sending him hard to the ground amongst the body bags. Raising up he looks to be winded, but behind his figure Frostbite see's the Growing form of a "zombie" type man begin to grow while his hands appear to be attached to 'spawn. There is an eerie light energy coming from the creatures hands as he begins to grow larger. Soon the creature is 7 ft tall. " I dont know what he's doing to her but we need her to answer for Horton plaza he thinks to himself."
Frostbite will skate down to where The creature is and try to send ice shards at the things arms and torso hoping it will let go and stop growing.

Armstrong is knocked off the edge of the building by the blast. Lily scampers over to the edge and looks down. Though she doubts that Armstrong was hurt terribly by the fall, she needs to verify that, as well as getting a better feel for the distance to the ground.

"The judge will care once we put you behind bars." Based on his own words, there is no question in Lily's mind that he is engaged in illegal activitity or that she could get a conviction in court. "Let him have it, Tesla," she says, even as the crackling woman is doing just that.To that Armstrong simply shrugs and says, "Who cares?"

In the meantime, Jen will help out as she can. She siphoned enough medical knowledge from Nightengale to be confident enough to do basic first aid.
Jen chuckles at Blackout's comment. "Nice shot. I guess that's why they call you Blackout? At least you didn't say she was grounded.""Guess I found her 'off switch'," Blackout smiles, grinning wide, obviously pleased with himself for his accuracy and his wit.
"Gotcha", Nemesis calls out as she flies off. Once outside, Jen will set Psi-Lad down in a safe location and try to get the attention of the rescue workers outside."See if you can get a medical team down here too!" Flux shouts out.
"Hey! You've got injured down in the basement! You need a medical team right away!"

Nemesis emerges from the basement, flying out with an unconscious Psi-Lad in her hands. Moving a safe distance away, Jen lands and sets Psi-Lad down. Looking around, she can see PRIMUS operatives working nearby, along with Silver Avenger Rackham.
"Hey! You've got injured down in the basement! You need a medical team right away!"
The Silver Avenger turns, a look of anger on his face. "What do you think you're doing here? This is a government installation and you are trespassing! I want her arrested immediately!"
The PRIMUS agents look at the Silver Avenger and each other, as if unsure what to do…
Inside the PRIMUS base…
After the blast of fire and debris, Flux shrinks and moves forward to investigate the cause. Rounding the corner, Flux sees the man he was expecting: Fire and Ice who was changed at the saucer site yesterday. Waves of fire and ice ripple across the man. He holds his head as if in pain and lets out a primordial scream.
The wall behind the man has a large hole blasted in it. A few wisps of fire can be seen around the hole.
Removing his hands from his head, Fire and Ice just points away from himself and a blast of ice fills the corridor! It completely misses Flux and his friends. It is clear that the man is not in a rational state of mind.
Roll Call: Lily and Tesla
Among the rooftops in Downtown San Diego, Tesla has just blasted Armstrong off the roof! Both heroines go rush to the edge to see what become of the white tuxedoed man. Reaching the edge and looking down, they can see Armstrong imbedded it the sidewalk some 8 stories below. He's not moving, but there doesn't seem to be any blood around him on the concrete.
"Nicely done, ladies."
Lila and Tesla turn to the source of the voice. It is not Archangel as they initially expected. Instead, it is a tall woman in a royal blue and purple costume. A golden birdlike emblem covers her heart and a matching golden birdlike helmet covers the top of her head. A long beak protrudes from the helmet over her hose and small feathered wings sweep away from her ears. Long auburn colored hair can been seen flowing from underneath this helmet. Lastly, a pair of wings made up of some transparent bluish energy emerges from her back and supports her.
Ominously, the silvery Harpy hovers several dozen feet behind the woman in royal blue and purple, as if nervous or unsure.
"That's one less man to deal with. Forgive my manners, I am Chimera and I am seeking like minded women to join forces with me. Behind me is my latest recruit, the Harpy. So what say you? Will you join us in the Furies?"

In the San Diego Convention Center, the Denier is down but not out. The demon quickly shrugs off the affect of Serena's attack and begins to rise. Polaris bounds in and this time he connects. There is an electric flash as he makes contact with a punch. The Denier is flung nearly a dozen more feet backwards and this time seems to be unconscious.
However, most everyone else's eyes are on what is going on nearby. Somehow, a one of the victims of yesterdays White Event has risen from the grave and latched on to Devilspawn! The scantily clad demoness tries to resist, but her powers are being drained by the zombie who begins to grow larger!
Eldrich hovers close by, unsure what to do. Likewise, the White Crane eyes this warily, her battle staff moving effortlessly in her hands.
Frostbite skates in and lets loose with a shower of ice shards. Some of the shards connect with the zombie, piercing his flesh and passing through his body! The diabolical Devilspawn catches a few as well and is knocked out.
The large zombie's eyes flare with colorful energy. It gathers there for a few moments and then is fired outward. The energy does not strike the heroes, instead it settles around the body bags at the zombies feet! It envelops the bags and disappears inside. A heartbeat after that, the five body bags that were struck by the energy suddenly sit upright and begin to unzip…
Now what?

"Sleeping like a baby," Tesla comments after seeing Armstrong imbedded in the concrete after his fall. She turns to Lily, "Can we bring him up on charges for the destruction of city property too since he didn't take measures to land the right way?"

"Now what?" Tesla turns and sees this Chimera person and Harpy, but no Archangel. That doesn't bode well.

Flux will stay small until he gets behind F&I then expand under him to normal size, delivering a blow with growth momentum added.
Hrm. No sense in trying to talk to the man; he's too busy talking to himself. Despite the circumstances, Lily finds herself wondering if the man who called himself Armstrong was okay. I should probably go down there and make sure he's still breathing...
She and Tesla are addressed from behind by a strange woman in bird-theme armor. She is accompanied by the woman called Harpy, but there is no sign of Archangel. She quickly grows concerned, particularly upon hearing this Chimera's vitriol toward men.
Lily nods in agreement with Tesla's reply. "Just what exactly do you and your Furies hope to accomplish, Chimera?"

Blackout will bound out into the corridor and hurl his rod at the disoriented and troubled Fire and Ice. He'll be ready to catch the rod as it might rebound a bit crazy with all this ice around.

The Knight is pleased when the one called Polaris manages to down the demon.
"One down, one to go."
Turning back to where the demoness was, Serena is surprised to find her in the clutches of a zombie giant. Before her eyes, the giant unleashes more mystical energy and animates more zombies for protection.
Changing course, Serena rushes toward the giant zombie, hacking her way through the smaller zombies if need be.

"If you are referring to the winged man who was menacing Harpy here, he is sleeping a few rooftops away. I can assure you that he is just unconscious, as I find the idea of taking the life of another deplorable."
"Chimera says that she might be able to make me normal again", Harpy quietly adds. "That's all I want. To be normal again."
"I will make use of all of my resources to cure Harpy", Chimera adds. "As I would for all who so desire. Otherwise, the Furies will seek to protect the innocent from those who would cause them harm and train woman to make the best use of their abilities. I thought that perhaps you were both like minded individuals, or was I mistaken?"
"Do not be so quick to judge," Chimera corrects. "I do not hate all men. Only those who prey upon others, like the ruffian that you just dealt with. There are people in this city who need help and I aim to help those who wish it.""I don't think either of us has a serious 'man hate' going on right at the moment. So despite the tempting offer, I'm going to decline, but want to ask if you have seen our wayward little angel?" Tesla directs the last towards Harpy, but will take an answer from either of them.

In the basement of the PRIMUS base, the rescue efforts have taken the heroes near the containment cells where another prisoner is attempting to escape. Fire and Ice blasted his way through his outer cell wall and now stands in the outside corridor, his powers out of control.
Flux shrinks and phases to draw closer, while Blackout prepares to throw his rod. Gladiator touches Blackout on the shoulder to get his attention. He gestures to the black garbed man that he's going to circle around the other way and come in from behind.
An ice blast randomly flies out from Fire and Ice, but doesn't come close to striking someone. Blackout acts first, stepping into the corridor and flinging his rod at the unsuspecting Fire and Ice. The deranged man is struck solidly in the side of the head.
At the same time, Flux grows underneath him, driving Fire and Ice up and into the ceiling! Between the two attacks, Fire and Ice is down for the count. However, his body continues to alternate between being on fire and being frozen even while unconscious.
Gladiator sweeps in from the rear, but the issue has already been settled. The mentor of the Young Champions goes to say something, but Blackout interrupts him.
"I can hear voices", he announces. "Coming from in there..." He gestures to the hole that Fire and Ice made in the wall of his cell.

Silver Avenger Rackham has just ordered that Nemesis be arrested for trespassing on Government property. Jen tries to explain the situation to the PRIMUS agents, sensing that the Silver Avenger is too far gone to reason with.

Looking towards the basement, the men can't help but notice the unconscious form of Electra.
"She's right, sir", one of the men notes. "She was part of the contingent from Sanctuary and there are more injured down here."
The Silver Avenger does not take this lightly. "I'm in command here! Do you hear? Major Star got what he so rightly deserved and now I'm in charge! Obey my orders or I'll have to put you under arrest as well!"
To further illustrate his point, Rackham punches the PRIMUS Agent who spoke up, sending him flying backwards!
"You will obey me! I will make you obey me!"

The Denier has fallen and now the heroes focus their efforts on the strange zombie that has risen from the grave and somehow given life by Devilspawn's magic. The demoness is dangling unconsciously in its grasp.
Eldrich strikes the creature with a Smiting Hammer spell, but does not get the expected results. Instead of the magic harming the zombie, it only serves to make it grow larger! It shoots up to ten feet tall!
Energy unleashed from the zombies eyes had caused several more body bags to animate before it. As they begin to stir and unzip, Frostbite skates in and coats them all with ice. Their movement slows until it stops entirely.
Seemingly from out of nowhere, White Crane strikes the zombie in the back of the legs with her staff. Everyone could have sworn that the small woman was in front of the giant just a moment earlier. The blow doesn't seem to affect the giant zombie.
Screaming a battle cry, Serena joins the fray. She strikes at the giants mid-section with Blessed Salvation. The holy blade cuts threw flesh and bone, but doesn't really seem to do much damage to the undead creature.
Suddenly, the giant reaches out and grasps Serena's torso with its free giant hand. Immediately, the Knight feels her magical energy being drained away. In response to this, the giant shoots up to twelve feet in height!

I feared as much, thinks Eldrich, as the undead merely grows larger from contact with his magical spell. A creature that is nourished by such energy cannot be harmed by it.
Frostbite locks the other undead in his grip of ice while Lady Serena strikes the dead flesh of the giant to little effect-and her magic is added to fuel the monsters growth.
Eldrich teleports to Lady Serena,[ 1/2 move] with the intent to remove her from the grip of the creature via a second teleport spell.
"Attend! Magic is worse than useless in this battle! You others must strike against the undead monster. Lady Serena and I dare not!"
On the edge of remembrance, the spells of counter-magic beckon, just beyond recall...

He steps out and bounces his rod off Fire and Ice's head. Next thing he knows, Flux puts him into the ceiling to add more structural support to the badly damaged base. "Good thinking there, Flux! He fits in that hole perfectly."
Blackout nods and then thinks about telling him don't bother. Thinking quickly he begins to concentrate on bring forth ice to engulf the bodies hopefully ceasing their movements or at least some of them. Ice issues forth form his out stretch hands and begin to coat the body bags with ice slowly the bags cease to move and come to a halt. " That should hold ya till we get rid of Papa here." Turning his attention back to the zombie he sees Serena take a slice out of it with her sword and suffers a tightening grip for her troubles, Causing the Undead beast to grow taller{and probably stronger.}

Frosty will look around for anything that might help the situation. He will look to the ceiling and see if there is anything above the zombie that the could possibly bring down on it when Serena and Spawn are free.

Tesla will make note of which direction Chimera heads off in and then turn to Lily, "I doubt that's the last we'll be seeing of them. Hopefully not on the 'wrong side' though. I would like to believe she meant what she said. Shall we go see if we can find our sleeping angel and wake him up?"
Tesla will wait to see if Lily changes form and then fly off looking for the snoozing Archangel.

"And I hope you both find what you are looking for."
"As for Archangel, why don't you go collect him and bring him back here. I'll gather up Armstrong so that he doesn't wake up and go wandering off. I'd like to see him behind bars as soon as possible."
That said, Lily will make her apely way down to the street. Then she'll work on prying Armstrong out of the hole in the pavement.
