New Frontiers #23

Finishing up with the peasants, the Guardians continue on their way. Scouts are sent forward for reconnaissance. As foretold, the Bridge at Elderhold is encountered after just a few miles down the road.

The Bridge sits in another draw, but unlike the others you've encountered thus far, this one has a deep ravine splitting it in half. The bridge is the only way to cross, without having to backtrack and circle around, a journey that would take several hours to accomplish.

The ravine itself is seventy five feet wide at the location of the bridge and at least that deep. The bridge is ten feet wide and constructed out of wood. It doesn't appear to be in the greatest of shape structurally, either. Holes can be noted in its deck. There is a noticeable arch to the bridge as it crosses over the ravine.

On the other side of the ravine and just off of the road, there is a small thirty foot diameter tower. The roof is some twelve feet above ground and on the roof is a ballista that can cover the entire bridge. Four men were spotted on the top of the tower keeping watch.

Next to the tower, and blocking the road, is an iron gate. One side of the gate is set into the walls of the tower, the other into a small wall erected on the other side of the road. Two more guards patrol behind the gate.

There is not enough room on the far side of the ravine to circle around the tower or the gateway. Those attempting to do so without any climbing skills would most likely fall into the ravine.

Based on the lay of the land, the scouts conclude that there is no normal way to reach the bridge without being spotted by those in the tower. The terrain is mostly open and there is very little cover. The only safe cover is the behind the hill leading down to the draw. The bridge is about 200 yards from this safe position, the tower itself almost 225 yards.

GM Notes:

My apologies for taking so long to get an update posted. My private life has been hectic as of late, and that's an understatement. Just not much free time to spend in front of the computer these last few weeks. Fortunately, this should only last another two weeks or so.

As of yet, no one has actually gone down into the draw. This is what could be observed from a distance by the scouts. Likewise, no one has attempted to speak to the guards yet.

How do you want to proceed from here?

Attacking the tower...

Post by Validar »

VALIDAR -

As the scouts are sent forward, the rest of the group advances slowly towards the Bridge at Elderhold and the tower. Validar moves to the front of the column to lead the procession.

"Seeing that the guards were bribed by the peasants, we can assume that the guards are not very high in the command structure or at least are not well rewarded. I do not imagine the bribe amounted to much coin at all. That is of course if we believe the peasants' story to begin with."

Validar will ask Sherwood, "Do we know whether the soldiers had any influence from the Cult of the Blackflame other than simple fear and such. Is it a matter of fanaticism in the whole organization or just control by a select few? Based on the guards for Artur and Arkane I would guess the later. In which case, these guards would be outnumbered by us and could be easily made to allow us passage or to quit their posts with a sufficient show of force."

Validar will address the entire group, once the scouts have returned as well. "If the guards number twelve or so as the peasants indicated, then we may out-number them. We have a few options to circumvent this tower: we can send in a stealthy group to take out the guards and open the gate, we can convince them to pass with a show of force, we can asimply attack in force, or we can attempt to negotiate with them and perhaps have them quit their posts entirely or even ally with us in the coming battles. What say the rest of you? My impression is that the guards are perhaps a minimal concern and there is little need to kill them if we can make them allow us passage."

"We should also have one of the scouts check the ravine bottom for an unusual surprises. I would expect to have heard such from the peasants if that were the case, but no reason not to be prepared."

Sherra:

After we get ready to leave the peasants, Sherra moves out with the rest of the scouts. Soon enough she sees the tower and the bridge and moves carefully to avoid being spotted while gathering everything that might be of importance.

She makes her way back to Validar and the rest of the group, passing on what she observed and listening to hear what the others noticed that she might have missed.

"An excellent idea," Validar will respond. "As long as the ravine is clear and no danger is present, then having even one person in a hidden position could be helpful depending on what we do with the guards."

"Who else has a suggestion to add?"

Lyonessa:

With the best of our blessings, magic and offered food we leave the peasants, making the way to where the bridge lay. Lyonessa patiently waits until all those scouting make their return. Validar seeks some answers from Sherwood and then addresses the entire group, speaking about there being no real need for loss of life.

"I would agree and I believe this would be one of the situations we had discussed earlier Lord Validar, is it not? I noticed no mention of using magic, but several spells would fit in with this situation. Under cover of archers if need be, could we not cast sleeps, charms, friends, hypnotise or other such spells and make short work of this delay?"

"Not all of their number could be awake 24 hours a day either, so is their more guards than already seen or does that number include those sleeping? If two or three are charmed or otherwise convinced we are no threat and the rest in magical slumber there would be no alarm raised to wake others that may be sleeping normally beyond."

Lyonessa will think over other options, only coming up with one other that would make any sense. "I do not wish to cause excess harm or death, but if we must do so then there are potions of flight in possession and probably spells amougst the others as well to make an attack from the air and end it as quick as possible. It would use up more powerful magics for such a seemingly easy challenge this early on, so I believe it to be the last option to consider."

Laucian

Backing up a bit--

"There are enchanted beasts as well," the Old Man declares. Although he doesn't exactly explain what an 'enchanted beast' is. The trouble began about four or five months ago.

Enchanted beasts indeed he thinks to himself, as he rubs his chin thinking. Five months gives whomever is behind this matter ample time to prepare, This does not bode well....... "Thank you for your time." he will reply.

"Not long ago, Laucian. I arrived by way of magic, as I am wont to do. I trust things went smoothly in my absence?"

"As well as can be expected. There were no matters of concern," as he sits down to eat.

"I doubt we'll find anything just yet, Laucian. Rennydale itself is still a few hours ride away as memory serves. Now doubt the darkness we've been seeing on the horizon is coming from Rennydale itself. The Bridge at Elderhold is only a few miles from here. Let us circumvent that obstacle before doing any serious scouting. Once we are closer to Rennydale, then we can scout out the situation and decide how to act."

"As you wish," he will say and move to remount Starfire. He will continue watching the perimeter.

Soon we begin to get ready to move out and Validar speaks.

"This Bridge at Elderhold is our next target it would appear and the first strike of ours in Rennydale itself. We need to have the scouts ride ahead, perhaps off the road, and scout the incoming area to the bridge, as well as the bridge and tower itself. Who here among us has climbing skills?"

"I do have some climbing skills but, I must admit I do not have much practice in scaling mountains and ravines..."

Soon it comes time for the scouts to leave the column and Laucian welcomes a chance to ride Starfire faster than he would be allowed to while in a column.

Reaching the draw with in the bridge Laucian begins to look for tracks amongst the ground. He quickly sees the tracks of the wagon and several prints of humans whom were very light on their feet. Mostly the peasants he thinks to himself, thankfully there are no other tracks to be found.

He soon returns to the others and tells the other in which he found. Soon after Validar ask opinions on what to do.

Laucian will listen to what the others have to say and then suggest, "I do not believe bribery of them would be sufficient. They may have homing pigeons and send word of our passing to their commanders. Negotiation would be best, though if it fails we will need to take it by force and quickly."

In which case, these guards would be outnumbered by us and could be easily made to allow us passage or to quit their posts with a sufficient show of force."
"It seems unlikely that these guards have any significant connection to the cult, otherwise they would not be at such a minor post. More than likely they serve Lord Cavius now because they served him then and continue to serve out of loyalty or fear. I believe that we should capture them as gently as possible, resorting only to sterner measures should they resist or put up a stronger then expected fight. Once captured, we can charm the ranking guard and learn more information."

"We should also have one of the scouts check the ravine bottom for an unusual surprises. I would expect to have heard such from the peasants if that were the case, but no reason not to be prepared."
"I can polymorph into an eagle and explore the ravine easily enough. Likewise, I would be able to draw much closer to the tower without rousing their suspicions."

"I would agree and I believe this would be one of the situations we had discussed earlier Lord Validar, is it not? I noticed no mention of using magic, but several spells would fit in with this situation. Under cover of archers if need be, could we not cast sleeps, charms, friends, hypnotize or other such spells and make short work of this delay?"
"I am in agreement with this, Songstress. The magic possessed here can easily neutralize the guards. Unfortunately, the spellcasters will need to close in on the tower to work their magicks. I don't trust the bridge to hold much more than one rider at a time, so that does limit any direct tactics."

"Those who have other ways to cross over the ravine should do so and we'll gather on the far side. Sleep spells should be cast at the tower and perhaps a web cast inside to neutralize any who are unaffected by the magic. Then Lilia could go in and disarm them much like she did when we encountered Lothar's bandits. Sherra could circumvent the ravine as she noted and open the gate permitting passage off the bridge."

"Those not engaged in the main operation could come riding down the draw, attracting the attention of the guards and distracting them from the spell casters. As Lyonessa suggested, this should all be over in a matter of minutes with the skills we have assembled here."
I do what is necessary.

"Perhaps I could help? I'm familiar with horses, but not with training war horses - though I would like to learn. Perhaps this would be an opportunity to learn more," Kylie suggests.
"I was unaware that you were familiar with horses, Lady Kylie. Nonetheless, I would welcome your presence in this task."

The ride is exhilarating and the company pleasant. Still, it is nice to dismount and spend a little time alone together. "So, tell me about your family, Lord Corley. Do you have any siblings?"
Lord Corley hesitates for a moment before speaking, as if he is slightly uncomfortable. "Aye, milady, I have two older brothers. My oldest brother, Beltran, is a Captain in the Royal Navy. My other brother, Andrel, is a member of the King's Guard. Both have made fine careers for themselves and earned the respect of our father."

Lord Corley has little to add once we arrive at the bridge. "Indeed, the bridge and tower is well defended against normal attacks. In this particular instance, my combat prowess is of little use."

"One does not need to climb when one commands the power of magic, Lord Validar. I can grow wings as I did back in Twin Forks and simply fly over the impasse or use them to explore the bottom as needed. Likewise, the cloak of my kin will conceal me from prying eyes."

The Elf Maiden listens as Sherwood presents his thoughts on taking the guard tower.

"Sherwood Elf-Friend's thoughts mirror my own. The tower can easily be taken by magic. Sleep and Web spells can put an end to their resistance easily enough. My magic ring allows me to pass through Webs without hindrance, so I can disarm them making them helpless when the magic is removed."

Assuming that we opt for this plan, Lilia will cast Alter Self to gain wings once more. Then she'll fly across the ravine away from the tower circling back in from behind. While she does not have a Sleep spell committed to memory, she can cast Web to incapacitate the guards.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Gathering up her courage, Talia will step forward with Sherra. "I can assist in this particular area. The cloak I just received allows me to climb walls like a spider, so I can just simply go down the side of the ravine to explore. Such a thing is more inline with my training anyway. Then perhaps Sherra and I could come up once the attack begins and open the gate, allowing passage off of the bridge?"

"I learned to ride while studying with Jallarzi. She has a fine stable. Never quite got up the nerve to try the griffons, though," she says with a blush.

Kylie nods. "Hopefully they're as fine a men as you." She doesn't seem particularly impressed by their positions. "So no sisters? That is too bad," Kylie says with a smirk.

"What is your mother like?"

=====
Upon hearing of the barrier before them, Kylie moves forward with the other scouts to take a look. The defenses seem adequate for a simple military force, but don't seem particularly well suited for defense against magic.

They return and report in to the rest of the group. "I have to agree with Sherwood, between him, myself, and the other scouts and mages, this gate would seem to present little barrier to our group. I myself have a number of spells which should be of use here.

"If I understand the spell correctly, Alter Shape should allow me to take on bird form and fly across. Sherwood could even chase me in his eagle form. That might give reason for me to land on the tower. I also have Sleep and Web spells for subduing the guards." If any guards remain, a Friends spell should help gain their cooperation.

A though occurs to her and she looks at Talia. "If that's true, then you could probably cross unnoticed along the underside of the bridge."

Arriving at the lip of the valley in which the guarded ravine sits, Grondar waits for the scouts to report. In truth their plans sound well reasoned, and he has little to add.

"I can add little to their plan, Lord Validar. It seems the best use for my talents will be to wait, ready to race in and provide support and healing should anything go wrong." At least his new boots would get him there quickly if the need arises.

After Dealing with the peasants Chareos goes to mount up after the others but than hesitates for a second. He reaches down into his pouch and removes several copper pieces from his pouch and approaches the Elderly man.
"I know it is not much, but please take it." he will then place the coppers in the man's hands.

Later on the scouts are sent forward to assess the area. While they are gone Chareos takes a dart from his pack and begins to become accustomed to its light weight in his hand. As the riders return Chareos will listen to the information given and concur with Lilia.

"I foresee no difficulty in removing these guards from the field. I have a sleep and web spell in memory that would be of use. Otherwise we could use a web spell upon the top of the tower where the Ballista resides hopefully rendering it useless and the men with it."

Assault on the Tower -

Post by Validar »

Validar -

Validar listens to the suggestions at hand and makes his own proposal based on the input of everyone. A smile graces his face as numerous suggestions are put forth and it is not necessary for him to simply dictate a plan of attack.

"Very well. Based on most opinions voiced, we should look to take the keep by magic if unable to negotiate our way through. We should be able to avoid much loss of life, as Lyonessa mentioned, and we may be able to add a bit of support to ourselves or at least allow passage without much difficulty."

"Those with the power of flight, Sherwood, Lilia and Kylie, should go across by magical means and be prepared to surround the tower, hitting it with sleep spells and a web on that ballista as Chareos suggested."

"Meanwhile, Talia and Sherra can advance through the ravine once Sherwood indicates that all is well there with a quick fly over. They can then close the gap on the tower and be prepared for any surprises that may occur."

"The rest of us will ride forward en masse with a show of force in order to give the guards some concern of their own. We will attempt to cross unmolested, but the magic users will be prepared should something go wrong. We have a few archers in this group, which can be deployed on the flanks of the column as we approach."

Validar will lead the column set up at two wide with archers ready to dismount on the flanks. As they approach the bridge, Validar will call for the column to halt and signal the column to spread out behind him, with archers dismounting on the right flank. Validar will ride forward and call to the guards at the gate or on the tower and ask for the leader of the tower to come forth.

Post Continued:

Having arrived at the Bridge at Elderhold, the Guardians prepare to pass this obstacle. Sherwood Polyselfs into the form of an Eagle to scout the area from above. He flies down into the ravine and emerges a few minutes later to explore the land beyond the tower.

Sherra first uses her Armor of Blending to change it into something that blends into the surrounding terrain. (Basically becoming camouflage in color.) She has to move slowly, as it is not a perfect disguise. Talia trails along, moving from rock to rock to reach the edge of the ravine. Coming to the edge, Talia simply steps over and sticks to the side of the cliff. Sherra uses her magical boots and slowly floats down.

Kylie and Lilia cast Alter Self spells on their person. Lilia sprouts gossamer wings once more, while Kylie takes on a more bird-like appearance. Lilia takes a circular flight path over the ravine, coming in on the tower from the rear. Kylie simply crosses over near the bridge, but away from Sherra and Talia.

Lord Validar brings the rest of the Guardians to the bridge in a riding column. The riders then spread out behind him, with the archers dismounting and having their bows ready.

By now, the tower guards can't help but have noticed this activity. More guards appear on the tower top and the ballista is readied for fire.

Validar rides forward and on to the bridge. The bridge feels surprisingly sturdy, but it is unnerving to see numerous holes in its deck. It creaks as if in protest with each hoof Havok plants.

Halfway across, Validar is ordered to halt or the guards will open fire. Validar responds by asking that the Head of the Guards present himself. The guards respond back with, "Who are you to make demands of us!? Move one step closer and we shall open fire! Surrender and you won't be hurt!"

Those close to the tower could have sworn they heard someone else in the tower add, "Much…"

GM Notes:

Down in the ravine, the scouts will find the remains of bodies underneath the bridge. There are some that have been picked to the bones, others in various stages of decomposition. None of the bodies have armor or gear. Most have had their hands lashed behind their backs. The most recent body appears to have been dead only several days. Several well fed rats will be seen.

There are now a total of 8 guards on the roof of the tower. It takes six of the men to operate and reload the ballista. (It's a non-standard type that fires multiple bolts in one shot.)

Four more guards are by the gate itself. Those by the gate are carrying pikes, allowing them to pass between the bars to attack intruders.

All the guards are focused on Validar and the other riders.

Now what?

VALIDAR -

As the mages and some scouts break of to use magick to surround the tower, Validar leads the remainder of the Guardians of the Light to the Bridge at Elderhold.

As the group dispurses, Validar rides forward, the pinion from his lance billowing in the light breeze. The bridge protests with the weight upon it, but it holds well. The guards yell for the noble lord to halt and he slows Havok.

"I am Lord Validar, eldest son of Relon, the Baron of Pyris," Validar will say with some disdain in his voice. "Lord Cavius should train his soldiers better to recognize a noble lord and especially one from an allied house to his own."

Validar will pause for a moment, seeing the guards readying to fire, but continues speaking as he raises his hand as if in salute, but in reality signalling the others to act. "Surely, the fine soldiers of Lord Cavius of Rennydale have the sense to respect their master's allies. My father adventured with Lord Cavius when they were both younger men. I myself have travelled to Rennydale on numerous occassions in the past. Open the gate and allow us passage," Validar will continue. He will keep talking trying to hold their attention and in truth there is little to draw it away, until Lilia, Kylie and Sherwood are able to act. Once the web spell commences, then Validar will ride forward to cross the remainder of the bridge.

Then she watches to see what these follish little guards will attempt to do.

The guards huddle and talk amongst themselves after Validar makes his proclamation. Heated words are exchanged among the men, but they are too far away to make out clearly. Finally, the sound of weapon exchanges are heard, but these last only a few moments. A moment later, one of the men separates himself from the others and comes to the edge of the tower overlooking the ravine.

"You may pass, Lord Validar!", the man calls out. "Open the gate and allow Lord Validar and his party to pass unmolested!"

The gate does indeed open to allow easy passage. On top of the tower, five men are holding two of their number captive while the one who called out heads down to ground level. The others with their prisoners follow shortly afterwards. The top of the tower is now deserted and the ballista unmanned.

Validar rides across and passes through the gate without incident. On the other side, the four men with pikes have their weapons at ease. The man who called out emerges from the tower and salutes.

"Welcome to Rennydale, Lord Validar. I am Private Robensen. I sincerely hope that you and your band are here to remove the cloud of darkness that covers Rennydale these days. These are most desperate times."

"Traitors!", one of the restrained men cries out in anger. "You've betrayed your lord and master! You'll be hung for this!"

"Our lord betrayed us first!", Private Robensen retorts. "This has gone on too long and something needs to be done!"

Turning back to Validar, Robensen adds, "Will you assist us in our time of need?"

"Of course, foolish of me not to realize that, milady. I had assumed that since you were unfamiliar with identifying the good qualities of a horse that you were unfamiliar with riding them as well. Indeed, I too would be most nervous in using a flying mount. I fear that great heights make me a bit woozy at times."
Kylie nods. "Hopefully they're as fine a men as you." She doesn't seem particularly impressed by their positions. "So no sisters? That is too bad," Kylie says with a smirk.
"They are both respected in their fields, Lady Kylie. Indeed, I can only hope to achieve a fraction of the respect they have afforded to them by way of their deeds. No, no sisters. Had my parents had daughters, we may have actually settled down and not wandered the kingdom as much as we did. My life might be different in that respect."
"What is your mother like?"
"The Lady Brenna is a marvelous woman. I cannot think of asking for a better mother than mine. Warm, generous, and charming. She raised three strapping boys mostly on her own while father was away on the King's business. Stern when needed, but kind as well. Much of what I am I owe to her."

Lord Corley wishes Kylie the best of luck and her returned safety as she invokes her magic and changes into a bird. Once she is away, he joins with Lords Validar and Acerion near the head of the riding column.

Much to Corley's surprise, the guards allow us to pass after a small scuffle. Intrigued as to what is going on, Corley rides after Validar, maintaining a safe distance in case the bridge is unable to support both of our mounts at the same time.

Once on the other side, he hears some of what Private Robensen said. Corley will keep his eyes open for treachery while Validar speaks to the man.

That might give reason for me to land on the tower. I also have Sleep and Web spells for subduing the guards." If any guards remain, a Friends spell should help gain their cooperation.
After hearing Kylie speak about her intentions, Sherwood seizes the moment to do a little tutoring on spell applications.

"Alter Self is a limited form of the Polyself spell that I use. The duration of my spell is measured in hours, while yours is in minutes. Thus it is important to do as much as you can while the magic is in operation as possible. So you and Lilia should be among the last of us going over the ravine to leave to ensure the spell doesn't give out in midair."

"Changing into a bird is a good idea, however it eliminates your ability to cast spells while changed. You would have to land on the tower, change form, and then cast either Sleep or Web before the guards noticed and struck back. The spell does not allow you to take a different form, so you can only stay as a bird or revert back to your real form, ending the spell in the process. Perhaps not the best strategy in this particular circumstance."

Changing into an eagle, Sherwood scouts out the ravine and the lands beyond the tower. He is dismayed by the remains found at the bottom of the ravine. Who were these people that had been tossed into the gorge and left to die?

Flying back to the tower, Sherwood can see Validar giving the signal to attack, but holds off seeing the action taking place on the tower. Seems like a power struggle is in progress.

When the riders are allowed to cross, Sherwood continues to watch just in case of treachery. When none is forthcoming, the Ranger/Mage will land and change into an elf to keep his spell in operation.

"What are those remains at the bottom of the ravine, Robensen? Who are they and why were they sent to their deaths?"
I do what is necessary.

VALIDAR -

Lord Validar gives the signal to attack, but quickly cancels it as a skirmish breaks out on the tower. Validar trots forward a few steps as he looks to see what is happening. A moment later a voice calls out to allow him passage and the guards at the gate, open it and stand aside.

Validar looks back to his comrades and rides forward boldly, passing the gate, and returning the salute of Private Robensen.

"Welcome to Rennydale, Lord Validar. I am Private Robensen. I sincerely hope that you and your band are here to remove the cloud of darkness that covers Rennydale these days. These are most desperate times."

"Thank you for welcoming us to Rennydale. I only wish it were under better circumstances. Your lands have been caught under a dark shroud and the Guardians of the Light have arrived to lift the darkness."

"Traitors!", one of the restrained men cries out in anger. "You've betrayed your lord and master! You'll be hung for this!"

"Our lord betrayed us first!", Private Robensen retorts. "This has gone on too long and something needs to be done!" Turning back to Validar, Robensen adds, "Will you assist us in our time of need?"

"Are these men cooperating with the evil that plagues this land of their own free will or have they been corrupted directly by the dark influence? In either case, they must be stripped of their armor and weapons and incarcerated. If they are evil themselves, they should be put to death."

"We are here to assist the citizens of Rennydale to overcome the death and darkness that haunts these lands. We shall not rest until the darkness has been dealt with and defeated once and for all time. Can we count on your assistance from this post?"

Validar is also curious to hear the answer to Sherwood's question.

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Acerion:

Having had little to add to the plan, Acerion listens quietly and nods his head in approval as the pieces fall into place. The combination of stealth, magic and a strong initial showing of force should more than be adequate for the task at hand.

Mounting back up, Acerion moves up with Corley and Validar, positioning himself to allow the three of them the best access possible given the width of the bridge. Hopefully the bridge will indeed hold, but Acerion makes sure not to crowd the others. All the weight of armor, arms and horses will put a strain on the structure regardless.

It appears that things will not be going smoothly as more guards rush to take positions at the gate and ballista. Acerion watches closely, waiting for Validar's signal. His own hand closes around his battle axe, gripping it tightly as he prepares to charge forward. However, something else intervenes and Acerion watches with the others as it plays out.

Looking as if some of the guards are relieved of their duties, the gate is opened and Validar rides forth after being welcomed. Acerion moves up as well as he sees the others of the group beginning to make their way to find out the truth of the situation. Listening to the words of Private Robensen, Acerion weighs in the bravery of this soldier. Although it seems only a couple of the others were responsible for the seemingly evil work being done, it still took a measureable amount of mettle to break from this corrupt leadership.

Acerion keeps an eye out as the others join up, making sure everyone makes it. He is also interested in hearing further answers to this troubling situation.

Q & A:

"What are those remains at the bottom of the ravine, Robensen? Who are they and why were they sent to their deaths?"
"Some are the remains of simple travelers, pushed to their deaths by our former commander. I do not know the identity of all of them, or even how many. We tried to let as many pass without hindrance, but were forced to charge excessive tolls when our leaders were about. We finally could stomach this cruelty no more. I remember Lord Validar passing this way before and seeing the sizeable force at his command hoped that he had come to free us from this evil."

"Are these men cooperating with the evil that plagues this land of their own free will or have they been corrupted directly by the dark influence? In either case, they must be stripped of their armor and weapons and incarcerated. If they are evil themselves, they should be put to death."
"They will be incarcerated immediately, milord." At Robensen's direction, the two men are taken away. "I cannot say for certain if they are acting of their own free will. I do know they are not the same commanders I served with before this summer. They were not as cruel and heartless before."
"We are here to assist the citizens of Rennydale to overcome the death and darkness that haunts these lands. We shall not rest until the darkness has been dealt with and defeated once and for all time. Can we count on your assistance from this post?"
"It does my heart good to hear that, milord. My fellows and I do not understand what is going on. It does, however, have something to do with the Beleme Swamp to the north of Rennydale. There was numerous undead coming from that accursed evil place. Lord Cavius led an expedition to destroy this menace this summer. When he and the others returned, they were not the same. They were more cruel and evil than any can ever remember. Priests of some unknown, no doubt evil god, accompanied them and now only they have the Lord's ear."

"It is said that Lord Cavius uses a magical brazier to summon forth trolls and strange enchanted beasts. These creatures have free reign in Rennydale and are feared by all. The stories we hear out at this distant outpost are too fantastic to consider, but we hear them frequently enough to believe them."

"We will do what we can to assist you fellows, Lord Validar. However, I am not sure how we can be of any aid judging by the size of the force you already command. We are simply soldiers, not great warriors."

Ivy:

Ivy is somewhat relieved when the guards actually cooperate for a change. She was sure that another needless battle was going to occur. When it comes her time, Ivy rides across the bridge. She's not fond of the narrow width of the bridge, and especially the holes in it. Once on the other side, she'll ride up beside Acerion to listen to what is going on.

"Undead!", Ivy cries out when Private Robensen speaks of it. The normally peaceful priestess seems unusually eager to enter into battle. "Then perhaps in this swamp is where our true enemy lies! Let us ride there and end this blight once and for all!"

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden is mildly surprised when the tower is taken without any resistance. It would have been nice to have some excitement after several long days of riding, but it was wise on their part to surrender to an obviously superior force.

After it is obvious no battle is going to occur, Lilia flies in and lands close by. She'll simply let her Alter Self spell expire on its own.

"From the sound of it, these men were corrupted by something that lies in this swamp. Perhaps it is the same thing that Arthur and Artur were controlled by. Be that the case, then we should closely observe these men's commander and try to determine how he is being controlled. If magic is being used, then it should be able to remove it as well."

Lara:

Lara watches what is going on standing beside her mount with her bow drawn. She's already picked out her target on the top of the far tower when the time for battle comes. However, things are resolved peacefully. Storing her bow once more, Lara mounts up and grabs the reigns to Lilia's horse and takes both across the bridge to the other side.

The tiny elf quietly listens to what is being said. When the time comes to state her own thoughts she adds, "We can't rule out the notion that it wasn't the same men who came out of the swamp who went in. Lord Cavius and his men might have been replaced by others. They might still be held prisoner in the swamp, if they are even still alive. This tower commander needs to be questioned in depth to find out what happened during their mission to the swamp last summer."

mass grave...

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Although it is painfully slow going, Sherra is impressed by the Armor of Blending's ability. A ring or potion of Invisibility would have been faster, but at least she knows more of what the armor can truly do. Eventually her Boots of Levitation lower her to the ravine floor.
The sight is quite disheartening. Luckily the peasants they encountered did not endure this fate. Giving Talia a quick glance, Sherra looks for a good spot and gets ready to begin her ascent. She hears what sounds like commotion and then hears the horses begin to advance across the bridge in an orderly fashion. Apparently some good fortune occured above. Sherra will take a few more moments to examine the bodies quickly, seeing if any distinguishing marks can be found on any of them. During this time she will also concentrate and return her armor to the elegant black tooled leather that she had adopted as its normal appearance. Sherra will also try to determine race and gender of the most recent victims. Anything that might be helpful before crossing once again to the other side of the ravine.

Sherra uses her Boots and rises up to rejoin the group on the gated side of the ravine. She hears a good deal of the conversation as she gets closer, finally able to put her feet on the ground once more. Definitely not the speediest way to travel she thinks. Sherra hears talk of undead and possible mind control, possession or other sinister deeds. She agrees with Lara when she voices the need to talk with these commanders.

"I agree with the need to learn what we can from these commanders before they are to be incarcerated. Maybe one of the priests or mages has a spell that can help us get whatever truth they may have possession of," Sherra will suggest.

We tried to let as many pass without hindrance, but were forced to charge excessive tolls when our leaders were about. We finally could stomach this cruelty no more. I remember Lord Validar passing this way before and seeing the sizeable force at his command hoped that he had come to free us from this evil."

"I am certain that you did what you could to help those who passed by escape the evil of these men." Validar will glare at the two being held as he speaks. "We will learn of the truth behind their actions and if they are guilty of their own free will of these crimes, they will receive the same fate that they deemed to mete out. As a lord of the Kingdom, I have the responsibility to enforce the King's law and the murder of another man is punishable by death."

"They will be incarcerated immediately, milord." At Robensen's direction, the two men are taken away. "I cannot say for certain if they are acting of their own free will. I do know they are not the same commanders I served with before this summer. They were not as cruel and heartless before."

"As my comrade Lara Spellsword noted, they may not physically be the same men, but rather come sort of doppleganger. While the potion that was attempted to be infiltrated into Castle Pyris seems to suggest otherwise, it is a possibility we should not discount. Likewise, Artur and Arkane seemed to be controlled by something evil rather than being completely evil entities. My guess is that the influence of Blackflame has changed them rather than replacing them, but we shall endeavor to learn for certain."

"As Lilia mentioned, we should closely examine these men and learn all that we can from their condition. I only hope that death is not the only escape from the darkness that corrupts their souls."

"Undead!", Ivy cries out when Private Robensen speaks of it. The normally peaceful priestess seems unusually eager to enter into battle. "Then perhaps in this swamp is where our true enemy lies! Let us ride there and end this blight once and for all!"

"While your enthusiasm is well appreciated, Ivy of Azrella, we should determine much more truths before we rush off with revenge in our eyes and hearts. The telltale word in your own voice is 'perhaps'. We not only need to deal with the results of Cavius and the evil priests and whichever other nobles and minions are controlled by the Blackflame, but also the source of this evil. We will either cure those afflicted or distribute swift justice upon them. Then we shall deal with the source of the vile evil as well."

"We will destroy these evil priests and the undead that plague these lands. The Beleme Swamp will be cleared before we depart Rennydale. Any who have sided with the Cult of the Blackflame will be destroyed. "

"Do not underestimate the value that you and your men may be in this war. Already you have helped all the people who have passed this place to escape the land. The fate of all other refugees who pass is in your hands. I implore you all to not allow anyone in the control of Lord Cavius to take leadership of this tower and the bridge. I entrust you to make certain that no one even enters this tower or proceeds across the bridge if they are flying Rennydale colors. We will fly a blue pinion from the flag mast instead of Rennydale green to indicate that this tower is no longer under the control of the evil forces. Your task is to control this tower until Rennydale is returned to its former glory. If you complete this task and assist any refugees to pass, temporarily encamping in Ansimont or some other nearby place, then all of you shall be greatly rewarded in honor and in coin."

Turning to Sherwood, Validar will ask, "What do we know about the capture and testing of those who have been affected by the Blackflame? Have there been any who were successfully freed of the influence of Blackflame? You mentioned that Blackflame can be extinguished with a Dispel Magic. Does this affect the people in any way? And finally what spells and methods do you suggest to learn all that we can about the conditions of the two men that have been captured and how to learn all we can about the situation without Rennydale nobility and the army?"

Sherwood:
Turning to Sherwood, Validar will ask, "What do we know about the capture and testing of those who have been affected by the Blackflame?"
"From what I read, those captured by or defeated in battle soon went the way of Artur and Arkane. Nothing was left to question or test. The fact that the commander is still with us does seem to suggest that whatever afflicted him was not the Blackflame itself. Perhaps it is a tool used by the Cult to dominate others without spreading the flame too thin? A way to control others who, for reasons currently unknown to us, are not able or worthy to carry the Flame itself? Perhaps it was what they were attempting to induce into your father."

"Have there been any who were successfully freed of the influence of Blackflame?"
"None that I am aware of."

"You mentioned that Blackflame can be extinguished with a Dispel Magic. Does this affect the people in any way?"
"It is reasonable to conclude that the Blackflame in someone can be Dispelled before they are consumed by it. However, there is no way of knowing if such a thing is possible until tried. Another factor to consider is that Dispel Magic is never a sure thing. It's a matter of the casting wizard enforcing his will over the magic of another wizard. The more powerful that other wizard, the more difficult the task. For example, it would be easier for me to Dispel an effect cast by Lilia then it would be for her to remove one of mine."

"And finally what spells and methods do you suggest to learn all that we can about the conditions of the two men that have been captured and how to learn all we can about the situation without Rennydale nobility and the army?"
"The first step is to cast Detect Magic on the men to see if they are under the affects of an enchantment. If they are, then we shall attempt to Dispel it. Should that fail, then we should attempt to Charm the man and gain information that way. It is difficult to say how to proceed beyond that without knowing what was learned in the earlier steps."

"Unfortunately, of all the spells mentioned, I only have Dispel Magic in memory. Anyone have Detect Magic available to them?"

If Magic is detected, Sherwood will then try to Dispel it.

VALIDAR -

Sherwood explains that there have been no known cases of freeing someone from the Blackflame, but that may not be what is afflicting these men or many of the others under their influence.

"This may be getting even more complicated then, until we learn some concrete answers. But perhaps also, this Blackflame is not as pervasive as we once feared. If there are using a less powerful method to control subordinates, then we have a much easier task before us."

Sherwood gives his explanation on how to proceed with the captured men. Not having a Detect Magic in memory, Sherwood himself is unable to proceed. However, someone else speaks up...

KHARYNA -

Not really concerned either way whether the tower cooperates or not, Kharyna is ready to attack, but just as happy to not have to bother. This Validar seems to have a way with his words.

Going across the bridge in time, Kharyna arrives to hear the discussion of the Blackflame and how to proceed with the captured men, as well as Sherwood's admission that he is not carrying a Detect Magic at the moment.

"As any who are familiar with the ways of Mystra would know, Detectign Magic is a special gift that the Lady of Mysteries bestows upon her followers. I can Detect Magic multiple times per day without memorization of the spell. I also have a Dispel Magic spell in memory for use."

Kharyna will cast Detect Magic on each of the men, as requested by Sherwood.

Lyonessa:

Although she is not placed in the best position for approaching the gate, Lyonessa knows anything could happen and everyone will have a needed role. She keeps her potion close in case she is needed to move up to the gate and assist the others who are already circling using their various spells. The outcome is quite different then the songstress thought it might play out, but she is relieved none the less. She returns her potion to her pack and moves across the bridge when it is time.

Lyonessa listens to all of the conversation and wonders how her old group, much smaller and lacking such nobles as Validar who seemingly has such influence in many lands, would have ever passed. Would a fate of so many of the bottom of this ravine been theirs, and mine, as well? and what of sis? no, she would have found an easy way around men such as these Something said shakes Lyonessa back to the conversation and she speaks up.

"Could it also not be the lure or promise of power for loyalty in such a coup? Many are swayed to gain power, rank, prestige or wealth. Kingdoms have risen and fallen because of it. Men and others of evil or selfish hearts could easily be ones like those who were in command here, wishing to do well for their masters so they may be elevated themselves."

Lyonessa knows that a detect magic will be initiated. While waiting for those results she speaks, "If under no magical control it does not mean we could not place them under ours to gain the information. Charms or friends spells could gain anything they may know easily enough, although these men may not be entrusted with much information this far out from the main action."

Kylie:
Corley wrote:"Of course, foolish of me not to realize that, milady. I had assumed that since you were unfamiliar with identifying the good qualities of a horse that you were unfamiliar with riding them as well. Indeed, I too would be most nervous in using a flying mount. I fear that great heights make me a bit woozy at times."
Kylie chuckles. "It seems we have something in common, after all."
"Oh, I can assure you, having sisters would have changed your life more than you suspect." Kylie smiles mischieviously. "You'd be an awful lot more familiar with women, for one thing."
"The Lady Brenna is a marvelous woman. I cannot think of asking for a better mother than mine. Warm, generous, and charming. She raised three strapping boys mostly on her own while father was away on the King's business. Stern when needed, but kind as well. Much of what I am I owe to her."
"Yes, indeed," Kylie replies. "I would say that your mother did a fine job, based on the evidence I see before me."
Validar wrote:"The rest of us will ride forward en masse with a show of force in order to give the guards some concern of their own. We will attempt to cross unmolested, but the magic users will be prepared should something go wrong. We have a few archers in this group, which can be deployed on the flanks of the column as we approach."
This surprises her. Kylie had thought that they were talking about taking the tower by stealth, rather than a show of arms. Oh well, it's his choice...
Corley wrote:Lord Corley wishes Kylie the best of luck and her returned safety as she invokes her magic and changes into a bird. Once she is away, he joins with Lords Validar and Acerion near the head of the riding column.
"Thank you, Lord Corley. You be careful, and don't take any unnecessary risks." Kylie is slightly shocked to hear herself sounding a bit like a mother.
Sherwood wrote:"Alter Self is a limited form of the Polyself spell that I use.

Kylie listens to Sherwood's lecture, though with a bit of a puzzled look on her delicate features. When he finishes, she responds with several questions and comments. "This is a new spell for me, so my understanding may be poor. However, I was under the impression that the spell would last a minimum of 10 minutes, and perhaps as many as 20. I wouldn't have thought it would take that long to fly across the ravine over there.

"So how long does it take to revert to my usual body? I had assumed it would only take a few seconds. Hardly long enough to leave myself particularly vulnerable. I knew I wouldn't be able to cast spells as a bird, but thought I could change quickly - particularly if they aren't paying much attention to me - and then catch them with a quick spell. Sleep, for example, is very fast, and Web takes only slightly longer."

Once the decisions are made, Kylie changes into a crow and flies across. No normal bird flies in a straight line, so she wheels about a bit on the way, changing altitude as well as direction. Once there, she lands on the main post on the far side of the gate from the tower. However, it seems that the issue is already decided. The guards invite the Guardians in, and withdraw from the tower. Seeing this, Kylie flits over to the tower, lands, and watches the discussion from there. After a listening in, she decides that there is little chance of treachery, and cancels her spell. She then decends from the tower the same way the guards did and joins them on the field behind the gate.

The discussion of the bodies in the ravine sickens Kylie. Such a terrible waste of lives. Hopefully that practice will stop now that the leaders here have been deposed. When it is revealed that there may be undead, Kylie is no less pleased. "Undead. Great..." she murmurs unhappily as she wanders over to collect her mount from Corley.
Validar wrote:"As my comrade Lara Spellsword noted, they may not physically be the same men, but rather come sort of doppleganger.
Kylie shoots Validar a shocked and angry look, but says nothing. It seems she is so low in this particular noble's eyes as to not even get credit for her own ideas.

"I don't either," Kylie replies to Sherwood. "However, like Kharyna, I have some ability to detect enchantments - though not as often as she."

Crossing the Bridge

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:

At Validar's orders, Grondar takes his assigned position in the column for the crossing of the bridge. He looks at Sherra as she prepares for her own crossing. "Be well, young Sherra. May Berronar and your own gods bless you and keep you from harm." He takes the reins of her horse and ties them to the horn of his saddle.

They ride out onto the bridge, drawing the attention of - and a flurry of activity from - the guards stationed there. With the rest of the archers, he dismounts, handing off his reins to one of those still mounted. Cocking and readying his crossbow, he moves forward with the others, taking a position and drawing a bead on one of the men manning the ballista.

Words are exchanged between Validar and those in the tower. There is some commotion on the tower, then they are bidden to cross. Warily, Grondar follows the others slowly, keeping his eyes and crossbow on the men manning the ballista. Only when they dismount the tower does he relax and reclaim his horse. Grondar finishes the crossing on foot, leading his horse - and Sherra's - by the reins.

It is good to see that violence has been avoided. Grondar welcomes Sherra and the other scouts as they return to the group. He listens carefully as Validar and Sherwood question this Private Robenson. It seems they have much to do here.

"Be of stout heart, lads," Grondar says to Robenson and the other guards. "Lord Validar is a man of his word, and you have my word as a priest of the Revered Mother that we will get to the bottom of this and root out whatever evil may be afoot."

VALIDAR -

Lyonessa - "Could it also not be the lure or promise of power for loyalty in such a coup? Many are swayed to gain power, rank, prestige or wealth. Kingdoms have risen and fallen because of it. Men and others of evil or selfish hearts could easily be ones like those who were in command here, wishing to do well for their masters so they may be elevated themselves."

"A very valid point," Validar will comment. "As Sherwood mentioned, perhaps they cannot spread the Blackflame too thin among the people. Perhaps the total power is limited and they may choose not to 'waste' it on those unworthy. You are correct. These men may be under some influence or they may simply be evil of heart. In any case, we should find out soon enough."

Kylie shoots Validar a shocked and angry look, but says nothing. It seems she is so low in this particular noble's eyes as to not even get credit for her own ideas.

While speaking, Validar catches the surprised and upset look from Kylie (he does have keen eyesight after all) as she is behind the guards. "Lara was simply the one to mention it during this conversation and in any case, it is just a theory. After all,..." Validar pauses for a moment as if lost in thought.

After a moment, he catches himself. "After all, we have no indication that anyone has been replaced, but rather changed: Artur, Arkane, the Baron of Pyris. All were changes or attempts at changes. The thought that concerns me however is that what we are dealing with may be more than the Blackflame alone."

"The Cult seemed to always work behind the scenes and not come out directly into the open. They managed to get the kingdom to believe Keln was responsible for much of their dark deeds and slink away to recover. I would not expect them to change their ways at this point in time, even if the Kingdom is a shadow of its former self. The Cult may be using some other faction of power to corrupt the lands and seek to overthrow the Kingdom. If they are successful, then the Cult has the power strings. If not, then a mere puppet has been lost, albeit a powerful one."

"The other possibility is that the Cult is being used by someone even more dark and evil than they. We have assumed that the Cult is who we are facing and despite the appearance of Artur and Arkane, there are no other direct indications that the Cult is responsible. Certainly, we must bring them down regardless of their involvement in this plot or not."

"The potion that was introduced to my father may or may not have anything to do with Blackflame. Similarly, these lower men commanding this tower seem to not be shrouded in Blackflame. The priests who advise and counsel Cavius may be cultists and may just as easily be worms of Hextor or another evil deity. Artur and Arkane may have been mere advisors in the attack against Pyris or they may have been involved of their own individual machinations."

"Hopefully, these men will be able to answer even a few of our questions, as it appears we have many that are unanswered. This plot may end up having more participants or more layers than we were expecting. Grondar's words may prove correct in that we will root out 'whatever evil may be afoot' and not only the Cult of the Blackflame."

KHARYNA -

Kharyna listens to the discussion and questions between Sherwood and Kylie and Kylie's obvious confusion.

"If I may add a few things here, I was never a big fan of Alter Self, since the size restrictions it places on you may not be good for being unnoticed. At most, you could be 50% smaller than normal as a bird, but that would still be a very big crow and not likely to go unnoticed and your form would still be some-what man-shaped. However, you are correct that you could maintain your Altered form for up to 20 minutes, any flight is much slower than a real bird and I think Sherwood meant that you would have to not only fly across the ravine, but have to circle far around the tower to not be noticed as a 40-some odd pound bird."

"Personally, I have always preferred the combination of Invisibility and perhaps Flight, but that may just be a personal preference."

Chareos

The bridge and tower come into view, the archers are dispatched and take their positions on the flank as Validar rides cautiously across the bridge towards the guards. Chareos takes up position near Acerion and Corley with his wand of lightning in hand. As the tension begins to mount Chareos chooses his target of one of the guards behind the gate hoping that the metal gate will magnify the effects.

Soon there is a commotion within the tower and Validar raises his hand to signal then suddenly stops. Wondering what is happening Chareos looks around curiously and sees the gates open and Validar and the others move forward. Chareos waits his turn and crosses carefully on the rickety bridge. When he comes to rest of the ground and dismounts he hears a portion of the conversation.

Chareos' mind begins to race with possible explanations of what may cause this but only a few come to his mind. When the time comes he will add, "I agree with Lara. Perhaps when Lord Cavius lead this expedition he and his men were captured and forced to consume tainted rations and then replaced. Only to be left alive for the information that only he knows of his Barony? How long was this Expedition to be gone?"

We will do what we can to assist you fellows, Lord Validar. However, I am not sure how we can be of any aid judging by the size of the force you already command. We are simply soldiers, not great warriors."

"You have done much already by allowing us across, but do not count yourselves short so soon. Yes it is true you may be merely soldiers but you are defending your home and loved ones. You would be surprised what normal men and women are capable of when their homes are threatened."

"As I recall The only spell that would be worth to us that I have in memory is Dispel Magic."

Laucian

Laucian quickly dismounts and draws his bow back and takes aim at one of the Ballista team and awaits the signal to fire. He begins to watch as a fight amongst the guards in the tower commences. Not knowing whether to fire or not he chances a glance at Validar and sees the signal to attack drawing his sight back at the tower he begins ready to fire as one of the man is overtaken by the others.

He watches in bewilderment as Validar is allowed across the bridge unmolested by the guards and the others soon follow suit.

Laucian soon rides his mount across the bridge in turn and catches only a little bit of the conversation When Ivy speaks of smiting undead to the north. "I do not believe we should run to this swamp with out knowing more of the situation my friend. Let us see what the commander knows before we act so rashly."

As the conversation turns to helping the Guardians of Light further, Laucian will ask the Private, "By chance would you happen to have any extra Lantern oil that you could spare and perhaps some cloth?"
