New Frontiers #22
Morning comes way too early for some after their night of dancing. Departing the Amber Waves Inn, the Guardians continue their trek northwards. The weather continues to hold and it is another pleasant day of riding. Temperatures peak in the low forties.
The Streel Highway continues to wind its way beside the Streel River. The river is wide and fairly fast moving in places. It's nearly half a mile across at its widest point. The river has long formed a natural barrier to invaders coming in from the west.
Several river barges are seen moving quickly downstream. A few are making the arduous trek up river, but are moving slower than the riders. Farm land continues to be a common sight all along the journey north.
Night is beginning fall when the lights of Favaro come into sight. Favaro is a smaller city compared to Ansimont, perhaps only one third in size. It has its share of grinding mills and textile factories much like Ansimont.
Unlike Ansimont, Favaro is a much quieter place. There are no obvious displays of anyone possessing great wealth. No fancy manor houses nor any real indication of an upper class. Due to their closeness to Alfheim, the capital city of the Elfholds, there is a fairly high elfin population in Favaro, along with numerous half-elves.
The Far Fields Inn lies just inside of town. It is nothing special to look at, but does have a homey feeling to it. Rooms are acquired and after a filling meal, everyone turns in for the evening.
Next morning, you come down to find Sherwood waiting for you in the common room, already eating his breakfast. After everyone has their morning meal, it's back to the road once more.
The Streel River narrows at Favaro to a point where it is possible to be bridged. A wide, stone bridge supported by columns spans the river. The columns are wide enough and high enough to allow river barges to pass through. Both sides of the bridge are fortified and manned by Corunglain troops.
Passing over the Favaro Bridge, the Guardians continue their trek northward. Patrols are regularly seen on this side of the Streel River flying the banner of Duke of Corunglain. The patrols become fewer the further you move away from Favaro. Now on the west side of the Streel River, the Streel Highway continues north, eventually terminating at the city of Corunglain.
Late in the afternoon, Sherwood turns off the Streel Highway and changes over to a well used dirt road. The track is wide and heads off in a general northwesterly direction. This road leads directly to Rennydale and Ardelphia beyond that.
A few miles along this dirt track, Sherwood calls for camp and the houses are conjured for the evening's rest.
It's back on the road again the following morning. The terrain to Rennydale is rolling hill country coupled with wooded valleys. The road winds through and over the hills, and the line of sight varies from half a mile to the horizon, depending on the elevation. Between each hill is a wooded draw, with the road following the smoothest grade. Several of the draws have streams flowing through them and the road crosses over on wooden bridges.
The first few draws are pleasant enough to look at with trees and signs of animal life. However, the trend does not continue the further you move along. Each draw after the first is a little more unpleasant than the one proceeding it. Fallen trees, more rocky outcroppings become common. A few of the bridges even seem in disrepair.
Even more ominous, a strange haze can be seen off in the distance. It lies in the direction that you are riding towards and seems to obscure whatever is behind it.
Coming to the top of the next hill, the Guardians can see a small group approaching them from down in the draw. It is what appears to be a group of a dozen or so peasants with a cart that they are pulling by hand loaded down with what little possessions they have.
Upon seeing the Guardians, the peasants pull their cart off to the side of the road and futily try to hide. As you draw closer, one of the peasants, an old man, approaches. All the peasants are either very old or quite young.
The old man speaks:
"Noble Lords, please do not kill us! We are simple peasants, miserable and piteous in our way. All used to pass freely. You must also go back the way you have come, for this road leads to Rennydale, and there is nothing good there. I beg of you, let us pass!
It is clear to onlookers that the peasants are near starvation and that several of them are sick.
Now what?

Try it and find out!
And so it begins...
VALIDAR -
After an evening of normal life, the Guardians are back on the road toward Rennydale. Validar will ride in the front of the column, taking Sherwood's normal place and turning the rear guard over to Lara and Aswansea.
Between Ansimont and Favaro, the road is easy and goes by smoothly. Validar passes the time by chatting with various members of the group about whatever seems to be the topic of the moment. He will ride at various points of the group, checking on everyone and spending at least a few moments talking with each of them.
Favaro is still a quiet sleepy town compared to the others on the Streel highway, as Validar remembers it. The Far Fields Inn is quiet and restful and homey. Validar spends some time chatting with whomever is sitting by the fire that evening before turning in himself.
Validar is up early the following morning as is customary for him. He sees Sherwood already there and greets him. "Hail, Sherwood," the noble lord states, leaving off the ranger-mage's own noble title. "I trust your tasks went as expected." Validar will join him for a meal.
As they leave Favaro, they cross into the Western side of the Streel Valley. Validar is pleased to see the Corunglain patrols in this part of the Duchy. The show of force is not excessive and the patrols seem routine, which means that none of the dangers from the north have made their way here in any serious threat. Eventually the group leaves the patrol zone of the Dukes soldiers and are on the open road again. Validar feels the familiar sense of impending excitement begin to well up slowly inside of him. Now there is just a hint of it. There will be a great battle soon.
Late that day, Sherwood turns the group to the northwest and onto the secondary road that leads to Rennydale and Ardelphia. Validar imagines that Lord Acerion must be feeling the same sense of anticipation that he is feeling. Eventually, they come to their encampment location for the evening and everyone retires to one or the other cabins for the night.
Early the next morning, Validar sees the haze on the horizon. Is it the wafting smoke from a large fire or something even more ominous? Validar rides to the front of the column as the anticipation of something to come mounts.
When the peasants are seen and the old one approaches, Validar will ride to the man and turns his horse so as to face him. "You have nothing to fear from us, old man. This band," he waves his hand over the column for emphasis, "is known as the Guardians of the Light. Rennydale is our current destination and beyond that, Stone Ridge. I am Lord Validar of Pyris, an ally of your Duke. We are here to investigate the situation in Rennydale. But first, our clerics will see to your maladies and give you a proper meal." Validar will signal to everyone to break the column and move off the road for a meal break.
Validar will take the first watch upon on of the nearby hills and have Po and Arocken take up a position on another point to form a triangle of guards. Now is no time to be caught unawares. "We may be near enemy territory even now," Validar will say to everyone. "There may be forms of patrols anywhere and of any form. Do not assume anyone flying the banner of Rennydale or even Corunglain is friendly at this juncture."

Conquer or Die!
Acerion
Acerion:
The memories of the night in Ansimont cling to Acerion like welcome ghosts as he prepares for the demands of several days of riding. Careful attention to his warhorse and his own gear is the only thing that causes a break to his reminisence of the time spent with Ivy.
The ride is indeed pleasant and uneventful. Acerion will spend available moments during the ride and meal breaks conversing with Ivy, Validar and Corley. The stop over at Favaro reunites the group with Sherwood and Acerion finds himself interested in learning anything that might be told to the group.
Acerion takes note of the patrols as the group presses on towards Rennydale. He sees no outward signs of increased concern that would betray possible apprehension within the patrols. Regardless, Acerion keeps his vigilance.
After another night of camping, Acerion believes he would have begun to see signs, however remote, of familiarity as they continue to press onward. However, for him, so much time has passed and he has seen such a wide and varied range of locales, that nothing currently strikes familiar. There is still quite some time to be had before reaching what would be the most recognizeable to him, but just the realization of all he has seen and witnessed to date hits him with its enormity.
The horizon begins to turn bleak, vaguely ominous in its appearance. The time to contemplate the scene is not long however, as a group of peasants approaches and then attempts a feeble cowering from sight. Validar approaches these peasants while Acerion shifts his battle axe to his lap, leaving one hand on his warhorse's reins while the other rests lightly on the axe keeping it balanced. Not all may appear as it seems and Acerion is not about to fall victim to a vile deception.
After a brief conversation, the group stops to rest so the priests may offer aid. Acerion stands close by the main group, seeing Validar already having assigned perimeter guards. Should it be needed, he will offer aid personally, until then acting as a sentinel within the temporary camp site.

Sherwood
Sherwood:
"They went very well indeed, Validar and I do bear news of interest to you and some of the others. The Order of the Green Gryphon, an adventuring band that is gaining some fame, has dealt with a cell of bandits operating around Timberline. Even now they are moving in on other bandit cells in league with Lothar."
"I also bear news from the Frontier lands. The Company of the Sword has secured Karn's Keep for the Crown. A force led by Sharadin and Captain Shea was dispatched to secure the fortress a few days ago. From what Jallarzi tells me, an impressive spell library was found there."
Sherwood will repeat the later story to Chareos, Kylie, and Kharyna. To Chareos, as he was a former apprentice of Sharadin, and to Kylie and Kharyna, as another of Jallarzi's apprentices who is known to them, the invoker Argent, is a member of the Company of the Sword.
Sherwood will inquire as to what transpired in his absence and is pleased to learn that the trip to Favaro was uneventful. Likewise, the journey towards Rennydale and hopefully the answers to this mystery are also quiet.
When the peasants are spotted, Sherwood will keep watch suspecting that they are just a diversion. The ranger/mage is content to have Validar speak with them, but remains close enough to overhear what is said.

I do what is necessary.
Ivy
Ivy:
"Thank you, Lord Acerion, for such a marvelous evening. I am sure that I could do this all night long, but alas we shall be riding come the morning and we should get our rest."
"If only there weren't so many others around and if only we weren't on a mission...", Ivy wistfully thinks to herself. The feelings given by Acerion's presence are almost overpowering. Ivy has never felt like this before, almost giddy.
Turning back, Ivy will give Acerion a gentle kiss on the cheek before saying goodnight.
She enjoys their chats over the next several days, but quietly is wishing for more private conversations than can be had while in the middle of such a large group.
Ivy is quickly off of her horse when we come across the peasants. "I can assure you, good people, that no harm will come to you while under our protection."
After doing an initial examination of the group, Ivy will use her Curative to cure disease on the sickliest looking of the bunch. From there she'll convert her first level spells into Cure Light Wound spells for the others. (She's hoping the other priests will donate some of their abilities as well.)
While helping heal and feed the peasants, Ivy will try to engage them in conversation. She'll try to learn why they are so afraid and who they were fleeing.
All too soon, the music comes to an end and Ivy, reluctantly, releases Acerion.Acerion feels warmth fill him and his heart quickens as Ivy leans into him as they dance slowly. He closes his eyes and lets the music guide both of them across the floor. He places one hand against Ivy's head, letting his fingers entwine with her hair as he holds onto the moment, wishing it to last an eternity.

Lara
Lara:
"Perhaps one day," Lara will agree. "We do take extended periods off from adventuring now and again. Mainly while Kharyna is off training and things of that nature. Perhaps then we can take such a trip."
"If there is one thing that I have learned in this world," Lara will say with a laugh, "it is that flattery will get you everywhere!"
All too soon the night comes to an end. Next morning, Lara is dragging to get up and moving once more. Oh, for the more simpler days of our smaller band where one could sleep in if needed.
The next few days of travel seem to pass slowly. Lara had forgotten just what it was like to travel by horseback everywhere. It seems almost barbaric compared to Chasreena's Mirror. But even that has it limits and horsepower is sometimes required.
When the peasants are spotted, Lara will move to the nearest hilltop to keep an eye on things. She'll sit on her mount with bow at the ready looking for trouble.
"Well that is something that we will have to remedy if time allows us to do so. The Elfholds are very beautiful, if I do dare say so. Many of the dwellings are among the trees though a few lay upon the earth. The scenery and the creatures that dwell with in are truly magnificent. Many times I would climb the trees and perch myself upon it branches and watch the wildlife from afar. If you would like I will escort you there."

"I'm also better with the bow than the sword. Then again, most elves are. Considering the number of archers here, perhaps we should have a contest one of these days to see who is the best?""When it came to training, Antinua and Ivellios were very strict and I must admit I am grateful they were, though at the time it didn't seem so. They taught me both swordplay and archery, of which I favor the bow."
Laucian will smile and watch Lara begin to dance and will mimic her movements to the best of his ability. As he begins to copy her moves he will state, "One could get used to this, especially with a teacher such as your self." he will meet her gaze and smile.
"If there is one thing that I have learned in this world," Lara will say with a laugh, "it is that flattery will get you everywhere!"
Lara accepts Laucian's hand. "We shall, my ranger friend. Let the bard play and our spirits rise as the night wears on!"The slower music coming forth from Lyonessa's lute soon reaches his ears for a moment he hesitates to ask Lara to dance but quickly regains his composure. He will offer his hand to Lara ,"Shall we?"

GM Notes:
As the peasants are tended to, the Old Man ("I'm not old-- I'm thirty-seven!") continues to speak.
"The Lord who rules Rennydale is cruel and vile. He sets his hounds upon the masses, and summons trolls to do his fell bidding. No one of youth is allowed to mature, but they are taken away by the creatures of the Dark Master to serve him. Whole villages are taxed to the point of starvation, and the townsmen are virtual prisoners, laboring in the forges and tanneries to equip the army of the cruel lord."
"Please, I beg of you. Do not go there!"

Travelling North
Grondar:
Arriving in Ansimont, Grondar's spirits rise notably. Despite the solemn reason for the occasion, the opportunity to spend some time among his own people brings a lightness to his soul.
Finding that Kax's widow is present and a priestess of Berronar proves bittersweet. It hurts to have to be the bearer of such grim tidings. He can see the pain in her eyes as he tells her what he knows of her husband's demise. Grondar translates Lyonessa's words into Dwarven so that they may hear his story in their native tongue. He also translates the words of the dwarves for Sherra's benefit, as she as come along - though he can do little more at the time.
When the appropriate time comes in the preparations, Kax's armor and shield are presented to his widow; who according to custom has the right to keep them or donate them back to Moradin's brotherhood.
After the ceremony, Grondar spends time consoling the widow and discussing matters of faith with her. When she retires, he meets with the other priests and priestesses in the temple. Grondar tells them of his travels and the small shrine he set up in Elcadan. He listens carefully as they relate the tale of the freeing of Ansimont and any further news.
That evening, Grondar wanders Dwarf Town, meeting, speaking, and celebrating with his people. He conducts a small service for those interested in the word of the Revered Mother, but otherwise avoids religious talk and just revels in the sensation of being among other dwarves again.
The next morning, Grondar joins up with his fellows as they prepare to depart the city. He is in high spirits, and does his best to cheer his companions.
The journey goes well, and Grondar rides alongside Sherra for most of the trip. Recalling the conversations of the previous day, he uses them as an object lesson to teach her many new words and some new lessons in dwarven grammar.
At the Amber Waves Inn, Grondar drinks and watches the others dance, but doesn't join in.
The following day proceeds much as the previous. Coming upon the starving, sickly peasants, Grondar immediately dismounts. He passes among them, using his skills and the blessings of Berronar to help as many as he may.
Even as he works, he hears the words of the townspeople's leader. It seems that much has gone wrong here in the far north. Whoever rules here has lost sight of the good of the people. The mention of this "Dark Master" particularly troubles this servant of the Revered Mother.
"What can you tell us, good sir, of this Dark Master to whom you refer?"

Travelling North
Kylie:
Though she doesn't know those who died, still the funerial service for Lyonessa's compatriots proves sobering. Kylie remains close to Corley for comfort and talks with him some little bit, though she is quiet and subdued.
Validar's gift of a horse to Corley is quite unexpected, and Kylie marvels at the fine steed. She watches as Corley gets to know the animal, and accompanies him on his ride. When the ladies get together to discuss magic and other matters, Kylie joins them, though she listens far more than she speaks.
She herself receives something of a present, the fine magical shortsword. Kylie is delighted and thanks Validar for it, quickly swapping it out for her old one. She offers her previous shortsword to Sherra so she won't have to spend money to buy one. Additionally, Kylie takes the time to speak with Lyonessa about the sword and its previous owner, so as to properly honor the former bearer.
They travel the next day, Kylie riding and chatting with Corley, Lilia, Kharyna and others. Evening comes soon enough in the town of Favaro, and Kylie is happy to dismount. To her delight, she finds that there are many elves and mixed breeds like herself there. Kylie spends much of the evening meeting and talking with them to gain an even better connection with that part of her heritage.
Morning comes rapidly, and they are on the road once again. Sherwood has returned from his mysterious mission, and tells them of other happenings. The news of Argent is particularly interesting. "It seems our dear sister is meeting with her own measure of success," she says to Kharyna.
As the day wears on, Kylie is one of the first to spot the haze on the horizon, and it doesn't look promising to her. Immediately, she begins to keep a closer eye on their surroundings and carries her bow ready in her hand.
Soon after, they encounter a small band of refugees. Their pitiful countenance says much of the conditions they are fleeing. Her heart goes out to them as they relate their wretched tale.
When Sherwood calls a halt, Kylie immediately begins food preparations. She cooks far more than usual, knowing that there are many hungry mouths among this lot of peasants. Having been in that state, she can't help but want to relieve their plight as best she can.

several days ride..
Sherra:
Kylie manages to catch note of Sherra's interest in purchasing a short sword and saves her the trouble.
Sherra keeps her eyes open once there becomes a noticeable change on the horizon during the following day's ride. As we make a stop to aid the peasants, Sherra helps in gathering the group's horses so the priests and guards can go that much quicker to their appointed tasks. She will then listen to the conversation and try to imagine such a horrible situation. Even the experience she endured during her early years doesn't match the savagery of what is told to the group by the peasant.
Kylie manages to catch note of Sherra's interest in purchasing a short sword and saves her the trouble.
"Thanks Kylie. I appreciate it," Sherra replies with an easy smile, "Sometime I'd like to start learning the basics and if you're up to it, I look forward to the opportunity." Sherra will still put the short sword away in her saddlebags until time proves more plentiful. She offers her previous shortsword to Sherra so she won't have to spend money to buy one.
Even though Grondar wasn't available for most of her trip around Dwarf Town, Sherra definitely welcomes the opportunity during the ride to review what she picked up and being able to answer her questions about some of the conversation she couldn't quite grasp. "Best way to learn is to dive right in sometimes," Sherra comments, smiling as she knows she made an off-hand reference to learning to swim and what NOT to do when learning that particular skill, despite the phrase. The journey goes well, and Grondar rides alongside Sherra for most of the trip. Recalling the conversations of the previous day, he uses them as an object lesson to teach her many new words and some new lessons in dwarven grammar.

Dark Lord?
VALIDAR -
In Favaro-
"They went very well indeed, Validar and I do bear news of interest to you and some of the others. The Order of the Green Gryphon, an adventuring band that is gaining some fame, has dealt with a cell of bandits operating around Timberline. Even now they are moving in on other bandit cells in league with Lothar."
"Very good. Our light cavalry patrols are quiet effective is securing the roads, but having the cell removed is a welcome relief. It will make the road that much safer and also eliminates Elcadan presence in that portion of the Barony."
"I also bear news from the Frontier lands. The Company of the Sword has secured Karn's Keep for the Crown. A force led by Sharadin and Captain Shea was dispatched to secure the fortress a few days ago. From what Jallarzi tells me, an impressive spell library was found there."
"There is much good to be done for the Kingdom in the East. And much opportunity for honor and glory. I had heard of some of the exploits of this Company of the Sword before I left Gateway."
On the Road-
The noble lord's eyes narrow as the peasant speaks. "My father adventured with Lord Cavius. I have met him personally. He may not be the most social of nobles, but he never was cruel and vile." Validar will wait until the peasant answer's Grondar's question before continuing. Validar will keep an eye on the peasants, once Ivy and Grondar begin to move amongst them. The noble lord does not suspect treachery, but it is always better to be prepared. He is concerned with how much of what the man says is based on truth and how much is fabricated nonsense.

Conquer or Die!
Chareos
Waking with his head aching he rises as early as he possibly can and washes his face. As he looks in the mirror he can't help but notice the look on his face and he thinks to himself, "It seems I have something else to remember that fine night besides just memories." Rubbing the tiredness from his eyes he gathers his gear and makes ready for the day's travel.
The weather is most agreeable with a little chill in the air as they begin their ride north to Rennydale. Chareos will engage in conversation with whomever wishes to talk. Favaro comes into sight in the early evening. A most welcome sight as his hind quarters are bothering him from riding all day. He eats heartily of the meal provided and makes small talk with the others during dinner. Soon it becomes too late and Chareos reads his tome for a time then falls asleep.
Morning comes too fast as he rises to meet the trials of the day. Gathering his gear he heads down to breakfast to find Sherwood and the others eating. He will welcome Sherwood back and then begin eating of his meal.
Later on Sherwood speaks to Chareos about the capture of Karn's Keep.
"I also bear news from the Frontier lands. The Company of the Sword has secured Karn's Keep for the Crown. A force led by Sharadin and Captain Shea was dispatched to secure the fortress a few days ago. From what Jallarzi tells me, an impressive spell library was found there."
"Tis wondrous news! When next I meet him I will have to hear the tale in full," he says with a smile. He can't help but picture Sharadin in his head looking over the newly acquired tomes and wishes the Guardians of Light could find such a library.
The ride north is most pleasing as he watches the surrounding draws and talks with the others. Validar soon rides the length of the column and begins talking with the others. Chareos is most curious about the lands ahead of them and especially the Lord Cavuis. "This Lord Cavius of Rennydale, what type of man is he?"
Soon the sight of peasants and a misty haze to the north can be seen. Validar soon calls the column to a stop and the peasants are fed and looked after by the clerics and Kylie's fine cooking.
The elder peasant speaks to the others and Chareos is intent on listening before leaving to watch the perimeter.
Validar soon interjects

He will speak up to Validar, "What you say may have been the case my friend. But with all due respect Validar, look at these people they are nearly skeletons and most are ill. It does not bode well to defend such a man." He knows full well that Validar's eyes will soon turn on him and bore a hole where his chest is with his eyes so he will speak before Validar has a chance to reply. "I do not know this Lord Cavuis of which you speak and I do not doubt your respect for him, but there is a possibility that he is not in his right state of mind. Judging by them" he will cast his hand at them," he is not."

Laucian
"Perhaps one day," Lara will agree. "We do take extended periods off from adventuring now and again. Mainly while Kharyna is off training and things of that nature. Perhaps then we can take such a trip."
"I will look forward to such a day."
"I'm also better with the bow than the sword. Then again, most elves are. Considering the number of archers here, perhaps we should have a contest one of these days to see who is the best?"
"It would be interesting to see whom among us has the best aim and range. We will have to arrange such an event."
"If there is one thing that I have learned in this world," Lara will say with a laugh, "it is that flattery will get you everywhere!"
Laucian will laugh in agreement.
Lara accepts Laucian's hand. "We shall, my ranger friend. Let the bard play and our spirits rise as the night wears on!"
"They surely will rise, though I fear we will not rise swiftly come morning." he will say with a laugh.
Morning comes too fast as Laucian rises with visions from the previous night still fresh in his mind. He gathers his gear and makes ready for the day's travel taking his usual place near the front of the column.
The weather is yet again pleasant and the ride to Favaro is long but uneventful. The town seems to be back to the earth type with many elves within the population. Eating fully of the meal provided at the inn Laucian turns in early doing his usual duties to his patron before turning in.
Seeing Sherwood already at the table early in the morning Laucian will ask, "Sherwood it is good to see you well. When did you arrive?"
Soon the column of adventurers is on the move again as they head in a north-western direction upon a dirt track road. As they ride Laucian notices several pleasant looking draws but as they proceed it seems each one in order begins to look worse than the previous draw. Raising his curiousity and knowing that some species turn the landscape into shadows of their former selves Laucian will ride to the draws and look for tracks of orcs and humoniod creatures.
As the trend continues Laucian raises a eyebrow and says in a low voice, "Something is amiss here," as a bridge that is in desperately need of repair comes into view. The Haze on the horizon soon catches his vision and he wonders what could cause such a sight. He thinks to himself, Fire it is possible, Bog or marshland unlikely unless it is of unnatural making.
A wagon is seen with several peasants trying desperately to hide from us. As we draw closer an old man speaks and Validar assures him that we mean him no harm. Laucian quickly dismounts and begins seeing to the ill and helping them the best he can. If needed he will convert one of his spells to heal one of the worse off. Noticing the the wagon with very little in it he gathers that they are running from something and in a hurry.
Laucian will not partake in the eating and use a charge off his ring of sustenance, so that those who need it more can have it.
Soon the elderly man begins to speak of what troubles this land.
"The Lord who rules Rennydale is cruel and vile. He sets his hounds upon the masses, and summons trolls to do his fell bidding. "Please, I beg of you. Do not go there!"
Laucian takes in what the troubled man says and asks, "When did these troubles begin? And what manner of creatures, besides trolls, are in his service?"
After the answering of the question Laucian will relieve Po of his post carrying a bowl of food to him, "Here my friend, I'll stand guard while you eat."
After a time of listening to what the man has to say Laucian will ask for a moment with Validar and Sherwood a moment in private. "If what they say is true then there must be some tracks of these creatures. It maybe wise to send out the scouts such as Arocken and myself possibly even Kylie or Sherra to look for signs of which they speak."

Lyonessa:
with Chareos:
He will take a drink of his ale and look at Lyonessa for a moment then ask, "You are a fine musician, but I wonder if you dance as well as you play. Would you care to dance?"
Laughter fills her voice and pleasantly carries across the air to ring sweet in Chareos' ear. "I dance nowhere near as well nor do we have music to accompany us anymore. If you still wish it, then let us do so." Lyonessa will bound to the dance floor and await the mage to come sweep her off her feet.
leaving with the Guardians:
Such an unexpected turn of events last night but most welcome Lyonessa will be slow in getting up in the morning. Having not had any further discussions with Validar or Sherwood, Lyonessa only can assume that she will be riding with the Guardians now. Knowing full aware that Validar already extended the offer, she still expected further discussion like her role, treasure and other such menial tasks that her previous group droned on about when they first met. these fine nobles and adventurers are most certainly a different lot
Not knowing where she fits in exactly in the riding order either, Lyonessa will stay somewhere in the middle, moving about once she can witness an overall order. The ride is indeed pleasant, helping to wash the stains from the previous work from her mind. Lyonessa will play a simple melody on her lute as they ride along through patrolled lands.
Lyonessa will enjoy the quiet time in the various inns and magical dwellings each night they stop. She will return to her normal routine of prayers at sunset and sunrise not wishing to invoke any ill will with the Lady of Mysteries. She begins to feel welcomed as the days passed and not worry so much about carrying her own way realising all in the group support each other.
When it is clear the lands are becoming more hostile she does not play her lute. do not want to risk an easy ambush by giving away our position The encounter with the peasants saddens Lyonessa at seeing their plight and she moves among the other priests offering aid and converting spells as needed.

Answering Questions...
VALDIAR -
The ride north is most pleasing as he watches the surrounding draws and talks with the others. Validar soon rides the length of the column and begins talking with the others. Chareos is most curious about the lands ahead of them and especially the Lord Cavuis. "This Lord Cavius of Rennydale, what type of man is he?"
"Lord Cavius is a bit eccentric, but he was a trusted ally of my father. Rennydale and Pyris have some trade between them and we have assisted each other with skirmishes in the past. I have not been to Rennydale for a few years, having been in the Frontier lands most recently and training in Crossroads before that when I ventured away from Pyris."
"I am concerend about what influence the Cult of the Blackflame may have had on him and if he succumbed to the same attack that was attempted in Pyris."
Later with the peasants -
Watching his friend and leader's eyes narrow in distaste for what the man has stated and Chareos wishes not to see an argument between the two men. He will speak up to Validar, "What you say may have been the case my friend. But with all due respect Validar, look at these people they are nearly skeletons and most are ill. "I do not know this Lord Cavuis of which you speak and I do not doubt your respect for him, but there is a possibility that he is not in his right state of mind. Judging by them" he will cast his hand at them," he is not."
"You are assuming that this man is telling the truth. We have not determined that as yet, friend Chareos. There are indications that what he says has some bits of truth to it, but the peasants often have a normal disposition to exaggeration and story-telling."
Turning back to the Old Man, "I am only interested in truth. Answer our questions without exaggeration."

Our newest 'recruit'
VALIDAR -
Lyonessa will be slow in getting up in the morning. Having not had any further discussions with Validar or Sherwood, Lyonessa only can assume that she will be riding with the Guardians now. Knowing full aware that Validar already extended the offer, she still expected further discussion like her role, treasure and other such menial tasks that her previous group droned on about when they first met.
While riding north from Ansimont, Validar will notice that Lyonessa has settled in to the middle of the column. With a slight adjustment to the riding order, we incorporate her into the group. Various people move about in the riding order, it is not completely strict, but used for our general location should something develop.
When Lyonessa mentions that her role is undefined, Validar will comment, "Our roles are not so defined in this group as in others. For one, we are quite large, although not overly so. The Seekers numbered 16 when we engaged in the battle to free Gateway from the beseiging Hextorites and their humaonids allies. Now we number 18 and perhaps have a much more challenging series of battles ahead of us."
"We have cavalry and mages, front line fighters and archers, healers and stealth members, secondary fighters and scouts. And most of not all of the Guardians can fill more than one role. Your own role will be determined by how you fit into the group and what your main abilities are. I know only that you are a mage, a songstress I believe I heard someone say, and that you are skilled with your instrument. However, what we truly need is a mage who concentrates on support and defense of the group. Most mages opt for the more offensive or personally defensive spells and while I am very appreciative of such, mobile artillery is not the only role for magick on the battlefield. Many clerics often fill such a role, but I have been taught that there are many spells of the non-clerical type that assist on the battlefield. What is your main area of expertise in the magickal arts, Lyonessa of Mystra?"

GM Notes:
Grondar:
Kax's widow is known as Tukinia Stonesplitter, a Priestess of Berronar. The couple also has a son, Kaxon, who is a small child. In spit of the circumstances, it is a pleasant visit. Kax will be much missed in this area.
News of the recent restoration of the Dwarven City of Illefarn is still a hot topic in Ansimont. It is a source of great dwarven pride, although the exact details are a bit sketchy from them as to what really happened. Illefarn is almost due west of Ansimont and is also the closest inhabitated city, so contact between the two cities is common.
If asked why so few dwarves live in Elcadan, they will state that they find the large human city a cheerless place and prefer the smaller towns. Ansimont is fair sized dwarven population as their skills, along with the forge they created, are in high demand.
All in all, a very nice visit and they hope Grondar will return soon.
The Old Man (from scene 23…)
Ivy questions the other peasants and they merely repeat the same stories as the old man. From what they indicate, trolls are allowed to freely wander the streets in Rennydale, snatching up anyone foolish to be out. Children are taken from their parents and not seen again. Anyone who publicly questions the Dark One's rule is slain on the spot. This small group of peasant fled during the night and relate the horrific journey as they could feel the eyes of unseen predators stalking them in the darkness.
One item of note is that they mention a bridge in a draw a few miles away. Unlike the other bridges you have seen thus far, this one spans a deep ravine. A small tower sits on the other side of the ravine and it guards the bridge. A ballista sits on top of the tower and they believe that there are at least a dozen guards there. It took all of the peasants remaining coin to bribe the guard to let them pass in peace. They call this place the Bridge at Elderhold.

The Old Man (from scene 23…)
"He is the Lord of Rennydale, Master Dwarf. The dark one, whose name we are dread to say.""What can you tell us, good sir, of this Dark Master to whom you refer?"
All the older peasants visibly flinch when Lord Cavius' name is mentioned. Each acts as if he or she is going to be struck at any moment. The noble lord's eyes narrow as the peasant speaks. "My father adventured with Lord Cavius. I have met him personally. He may not be the most social of nobles, but he never was cruel and vile."
"There are enchanted beasts as well," the Old Man declares. Although he doesn't exactly explain what an 'enchanted beast' is. The trouble began about four or five months ago.Laucian takes in what the troubled man says and asks, "When did these troubles begin? And what manner of creatures, besides trolls, are in his service?"
The Old Man cries out and covers himself, as if protecting himself. "Please spare me, milord! I have told you what I know! Don't kill me!"Turning back to the Old Man, "I am only interested in truth. Answer our questions without exaggeration."

Lord Corley
Corley:
Lord Corley is pleased to have Kylie along while he tests out Destrier. After a time, the riders dismount allowing their horses to rest and chat about this and that.
The next few days are spent riding further north. The weather is more pleasant and conversation does come easy. The sight of the peasants does anger Lord Corley. How could any nobleman allow his subjects to suffer so?
"I promise you that the villains behind this will be brought to justice! This I do swear!"
Corley is eager to get moving towards Rennydale and whatever evil waits there.
Corley is pleased to have Kylie standing with him at this solemn time. Before he even realizes what is happening, he finds his hand in hers. He's shocked at first to be taking such liberties, but since neither one seems to mind, no note is made of it.Though she doesn't know those who died, still the funereal service for Lyonessa's compatriots proves sobering. Kylie remains close to Corley for comfort and talks with him some little bit, though she is quiet and subdued.
"He is a fine animal indeed, Lady Kylie. I can only what happened to his previous master to allow such a fine animal to end up in a horse market. Slain in battle perhaps. He does have some training, but is not as skilled as Charger. Destrier will make a fine warhorse once I have completed his training. A long and arduous process to be sure."Validar's gift of a horse to Corley is quite unexpected, and Kylie marvels at the fine steed. She watches as Corley gets to know the animal, and accompanies him on his ride.

Sherwood
Sherwood:
After returning, Sherwood will take the time to speak to Lyonessa. "My apologies for not speaking to you sooner, Songstress of Mystra, but my duties often take me far and wide. As Validar explained, we don't have any strict organization to this group. We were primarily formed to counter the threat of the Cult of the Blackflame. Members may come and go as they please. If you wish to ride with us, you are more than welcome."
"Yes, very exciting news, Chareos. I plan to visit as soon as I am able.""Tis wondrous news! When next I meet him I will have to hear the tale in full," he says with a smile. He can't help but picture Sharadin in his head looking over the newly acquired tomes and wishes the Guardians of Light could find such a library.
"Not long ago, Laucian. I arrived by way of magic, as I am wont to do. I trust things went smoothly in my absence?"Seeing Sherwood already at the table early in the morning Laucian will ask, "Sherwood it is good to see you well. When did you arrive?"
After returning, Sherwood will take the time to speak to Lyonessa. "My apologies for not speaking to you sooner, Songstress of Mystra, but my duties often take me far and wide. If you wish to ride with us, you are more than welcome."
"I doubt we'll find anything just yet, Laucian. Rennydale itself is still a few hours ride away as memory serves. Now doubt the darkness we've been seeing on the horizon is coming from Rennydale itself. The Bridge at Elderhold is only a few miles from here. Let us circumvent that obstacle before doing any serious scouting. Once we are closer to Rennydale, then we can scout out the situation and decide how to act."After a time of listening to what the man has to say Laucian will ask for a moment with Validar and Sherwood a moment in private. "If what they say is true then there must be some tracks of these creatures. It maybe wise to send out the scouts such as Arocken and myself possibly even Kylie or Sherra to look for signs of which they speak."
"A very logical deduction, Validar. Given what we've seen so far, it is clear that the Lord of Rennydale is not the man he used to be, whether it was by his choice or it was forced upon him. Our task to discover the truth in the matter and free the citizens from the oppression they have been put under. Regardless, our answers lie in Rennydale. Let's finish up with the peasants and let them continue on their way. We still have ground to cover.""I am concerned about what influence the Cult of the Blackflame may have had on him and if he succumbed to the same attack that was attempted in Pyris."
I do what is necessary.

Lara:
Lara continues to keep guard while waiting for the group to move onward.
"It sounds like a lot of fun, Laucian. I look forward to it.""It would be interesting to see whom among us has the best aim and range. We will have to arrange such an event."
"I believe this what they mean by taking the good with the bad," Lara responds with a grin. "We shall truly pay later for this nights excesses. But I won't regret a thing.""They surely will rise, though I fear we will not rise swiftly come morning." he will say with a laugh.

Many clerics often fill such a role, but I have been taught that there are many spells of the non-clerical type that assist on the battlefield. What is your main area of expertise in the magickal arts, Lyonessa of Mystra?"
"Oh I am a priestess of the Lady of Mysteries first and foremost. My strongest magical talents lie with her blessings. I am also gifted in my voice as a bard, like my father is. The magical nature of those abilities come in the version of song, not like spoken spells as the more traditional mage. I tend to not have vulgarly offensive spells as most do their work through calming, soothing or almost lullaby qualities. Calm, sleep, hypnotism and the such, spells that do not leave a visable mark on their intended targets, human or animal. The few attack spells I usually portray are more one-on-one affairs, so I would be better suited to put a rank of soldiers to sleep then char them up in fire."

"It is understandable and no need for concern. My only true experience was in such a smaller sized group that each of us filled vital duties. I know little of this Cult, only in fleeting tales sung by bards and old-timers. This group has been most welcoming and kind, I will gladly aid in whatever manner I can. My primary concern is finding my sister, and from there, who knows."

Kylie:
"You might be better off asking her, Laucian or Sherwood to teach you. I'm strictly a novice, myself." Kylie shrugs.

Once they have stopped to talk with the peasants, Kylie notes some tension between Validar and the leader of the refugees. Kylie moves closer to speak. "It is possible that you are both right, Validar. Perhaps this Lord Cavius who calls himself the Dark Master is an imposter. It takes little magic to disguise oneself as someone else. Even as poor a mage as I can create a convincing disguise as virtually anyone.
"And worse, Jallarzi once told me of creatures called dopplegangers, who can shift their form to perfectly duplicate anyone. I suspect until we meet this Cavius, we won't know the truth of the matter."
"You're welcome, Sherra," Kylie replies. Then, she smiles, somewhat embarassed. "To be honest, I just started to learn to use it myself. Lilia started teaching me after that encounter in Twin Forks.Sherra wrote:"Thanks Kylie. I appreciate it," Sherra replies with an easy smile, "Sometime I'd like to start learning the basics and if you're up to it, I look forward to the opportunity." Sherra will still put the short sword away in her saddlebags until time proves more plentiful.

All the older peasants visibly flinch when Lord Cavius' name is mentioned. Each acts as if he or she is going to be struck at any moment.

"There are enchanted beasts as well," the Old Man declares. Although he doesn't exactly explain what an 'enchanted beast' is. The trouble began about four or five months ago.
Considering that the old man is probably still exaggerating, Validar nonetheless believes his timing of the unexplained happenings here in Rennydale. "That would mean that the attack generated from this land on my family in Pyris was quite soon after the problems began here."
The Old Man cries out and covers himself, as if protecting himself. "Please spare me, milord! I have told you what I know! Don't kill me!"
"I have no intention of killing you. We only seek the truth and useful information. This group will rid Rennydale of the evil that has infested it, that I swear. Ansimont is a fine city, you should settle there until Rennydale is cleansed and you can return to your homes."
"I promise you that the villains behind this will be brought to justice! This I do swear!"
Corley is eager to get moving towards Rennydale and whatever evil waits there.
"Indeed we shall bring them to justice. If Cavius is a duped puppet, we shall attempt to free him from his Dark Masters. If he is a willing participant, then our justice shall be swift and severe."
One item of note is that they mention a bridge in a draw a few miles away. Unlike the other bridges you have seen thus far, this one spans a deep ravine. "I doubt we'll find anything just yet, Laucian. Rennydale itself is still a few hours ride away as memory serves. "We should make certain that the guards at the bridge are dealt with and the Tower is defeated before moving on. Only 12 guards seems a minor task for a group of this calibur and even our scouts alone should be able to remove them as a nuisance."
"A very logical deduction, Validar. Given what we've seen so far, it is clear that the Lord of Rennydale is not the man he used to be, whether it was by his choice or it was forced upon him. "Indeed, we do have much ground to cover. Once the clerics are completed there, we must mount up and continue our journey to the very heart of this evil." Validar will take up the rear point again for awhile keeping a close eye out for trouble, until the scouts break off and begin their search of the area this side of the ravine near the tower. At that time, Validar will move to the front of the column. We will continue forward but at a slower pace until at least one of the scouts returns with news.

A small tower sits on the other side of the ravine and it guards the bridge. A ballista sits on top of the tower and they believe that there are at least a dozen guards there. It took all of the peasants remaining coin to bribe the guard to let them pass in peace. They call this place the Bridge at Elderhold.
"This Bridge at Elderhold is our next target it would appear and the first strike of ours in Rennydale itself. We need to have the scouts ride ahead, perhaps off the road, and scout the incoming area to the bridge, as well as the bridge and tower itself. Who here among us has climbing skills?"
Once we are closer to Rennydale, then we can scout out the situation and decide how to act."
Our task to discover the truth in the matter and free the citizens from the oppression they have been put under. Regardless, our answers lie in Rennydale. Let's finish up with the peasants and let them continue on their way. We still have ground to cover."
