New Frontiers #15

Twin Forks:

The Guardians continue to relax in Twin Forks.

Out behind Lothar's house, Lilia instructs Kylie on the use of the shortsword, using a tree as a target. Close by, Chareos and Corley spar using quarterstaffs. A rake is found near the horse pen and a second staff is created by removing the head. Chareos allows Corley to use his own staff, while Chareos uses the rake handle. Corley is not wearing his plate mail armor and gauntlets, by the way.

Moving away from the horse pen, the two begin to circle each other. With a cry, Corley lunges at Chareos, striking the mage with his own staff. Chareos retaliates and hits Corley in turn.

Corley lunges once more and this time Chareos is ready for him. He avoids the attack and hits Corley with his own. This scenario is repeated and Chareos once more scores a hit to gain his third strike, ending the practice session.

While Grondar goes to see Geris about releasing the prisoners, Sherwood asks Laucian to follow the men to make sure they are nothing more than they appear to be. The bodyguards are released and they gather up their gear.

Outside the militia barracks, the men converse as to what to do next. They decide to return home to Corunglain as soon as possible. They pick up their belongings from the Inn and retrieve their horses from the stables. Once ready, they depart down the road to Hendry.

All the while, the men do not appear to be acting in a suspicious manner. While they are quick to leave town, they are not necessarily in any great hurry. Laucian follows them long enough to make sure they are leaving town.

The short day draws to a close and the group gathers for the evening meal. Sleep soon follows as tomorrow promises to be another long day.

On the Road:

Morning comes way too early for some. After a hearty breakfast, it's back on the road again. Sherwood leads the way as this is, literally, his own backyard. The weather continues to be overcast and it drizzles off and on during the day. Everyone will be soaked by the time the ride comes to an end.

The Ranger/Mage avoids the road to Hendry. Instead he crosses the Grayhare River and proceeds in a southwesterly direction. Light forest is found immediately outside Twin Forks, but there is a navigable path to be followed.

After a few hours, the light forest grows more deep. The path narrows, limiting travel to single file.

The trip continues on without incident. Night begins to fall, but Sherwood pushes on. Suddenly, the trail opens up to reveal a mist filled valley below. Rising up above the mist can been seen a large, circular tower measuring 100' in diameter.

The trail leads down in the valley below. The mist becomes thicker and thicker, reducing visibility to just a few feet. You can't even see where you are riding and just barely see the rider before you, all of which are just following Sherwood who easily rides along.

Unexpectedly, Sherwood comes to a stop. He raises his hand above his head and there is a flickering flash from one of the rings he wears. Seemingly in response to that flash, the mist withdraws from around the tower permitting normal visibility. Looking back, you can see the mist surrounding the tower like some sort of wall.

Riding on, the group quickly reaches the front gate of the stone wall that encircles the tower. Once more the ring flashes and the gate swings open of its own accord, creaking loudly in the process. Sherwood rides in and gestures for everyone to quickly follow him.

"Hurry! The gate will only remain open as long as I am close to it! The tower and its surroundings were highly enchanted by my ancestors. The ring I bear marks me as the owner of the tower. Stray too far and you will not be protected by its magic."

Once inside, Sherwood rides away from the gate and it closes once more with a resounding thud. Riding faster now, Sherwood leads the way to a small stable situated beside the tower. The mounts are secured for the night and everyone makes their way to the front door of the tower.

"My Friends, welcome to the home built by my ancestors."

Sherwood's Tower:

Once everyone is present, Sherwood opens the door to allow easy access. Behind the door is a short hallway with a small side room to store coats and cloaks. On a shelf in the cloak room are many towels that may be used to dry yourself off with.

As Sherwood moves deeper into the tower, his ring flashes several more times. Each time, the lights in each chamber turn on. The lights themselves are wall mounted with an open-topped frosted globe surrounding them. The light is not fire and is much brighter than normal candlelight.

The short entryway ends at a circular hallway that circles off to the left and right. A door stands directly opposite of the entryway. Opening the door, Sherwood leads everyone into a large room that fills the middle of the ground floor of the tower.

It is a large sitting room. A huge circular fireplace sits in the middle of the room. Comfortable easy chairs and couches surround the fireplace. More lights on the walls turn on as Sherwood passes. A fire is quickly started in the fireplace and the chill begins to go away.

A large portrait of an attractive brown haired/brown eyed woman in armor is hung over the fireplace. Several other portraits line the walls. A small bar is on one side of the large chamber and features many different refreshments. There are several other entrances to the chamber. Shelves of books line the other walls of the chamber. Some hold various knickknacks and other such trophies.

"Through that doorway", Sherwood says, pointing to one of the exits, "and across the hallway is the stairs. The floor above is filled with guest chambers. Choose one for your use tonight. There is enough for everyone. The stairs circle the outer wall of the tower and continue up for all four levels. However, do not under any circumstances attempt to travel up to the third level without my presence. The wards inscribed in the tower will react violently to any such intrusion. Kylie can vouch for that. Many of the rooms also have extra clothing, if you wish to change into something dry."

"Kylie, Ivy, once you've dried off, I'll show you to the kitchen and we'll see what we can come up with for the evening meal. Everyone else may relax. Be careful what you touch. Some of the items here are not as innocent as they appear to be."

Relaxing at the tower:

After the evening meal is devoured, a hearty stew by the way, the group relaxes once more. Sherwood disappears into the upper level of the tower and returns later in a clean set of clothing. He carries with him something that looks like a large stone slate set in a crude wooden frame.

"This is a rare magic item known as a Slate of Identification. Lilia, open up the bag holding the magic items."

Sherwood takes one of the items as of yet unidentified, the wand. He places the slate flat on a table and then places the wand on top of it. After a minute, he removes the wand. There is now writing on the slate where the wand had been resting.

"This is a Wand of Lightning. The command words are 'Lightning Stroke Strike'."

From there, the other items can be identified with ease.

Sherwood will answer questions as best he can about the tower or the magic items. He will also show those curious about past history a few of the books in the bookcases.

Eventually, everyone retires for the evening.

The morning comes and everyone feels refreshed. Sherwood will address the group before leaving on the next phase of the journey.

"According to my ancestor's notes, the Swords of Cynalon did number eight. James the Red, my direct ancestor, Jalazar Sallavarian, Jallarzi's own ancestor, and the brothers Validar and Valerian. Other lesser known members include Nightmist, Arak Stonehand, Beleme, and Melchor. Unfortunately, these people are unknown to me. I've heard the dwarven family name of Stonehand before, but not of Arax himself."

"The name Nightmist suggests someone of elvish descent, but I could be mistaken. Curiously enough, I found a small map tucked inside one of the books. It shows an area of the Blackpeak Mountains that I am unfamiliar with. Even more mysterious, a location is indicated with the word 'Nightmist' next to it."

Lots of ground to cover again!

Here's the complete list of Identified magic items:

Full Plate Armor +2
Helm of Underwater Action
Bracers AC: 4

Longsword +3
Horseman's Mace +3
Shortsword +1
Dagger of Venom
4 Daggers +1
12 Darts +2

Girdle of Hill Giant Strength (19 str)
Girdle of Many Pouches

Ring of Water Walking
Ring of Vampiric Regeneration
Boots of Levitation
Boots of Speed
2 Bags of Holding 1500 lbs.
Talisman of Memorization
4 Potions of Healing
1 Potion of Water Breathing

I'm assuming that the treasure from Twin Forks was dealt with as per Validar's plan. Probably a good time to give everyone their share of the loot and hand out the magic items.

Also what about the strange metal chest you found? I assume it was brought along.

After a brief time at the tower this morning, you'll be on the road once more.

New posts for this game will go up on Saturdays for the rest of this year. I'll update as possible and necessary during the week.

As some of you may now, this particular game world has been around since 1989 when it debuted as The Frontier on Q-Link (now being reposted on the main website). Since that time there have been several other games in this same setting. Sword of Doom and Borderlands on Qlink, with Borderlands 2 offline. Live gaming included the exploits of Kharyna and Jylsera, other characters of Validar's.

Not only is the setting itself over 14 years old, but much of the background was lifted from our earlier games from the early to mid eighties. The founder of Cynalon, Victor the First, was yet another Validar PC. My character from those days was James Sculley, the first significant mage of Cynalon. (And Sherwood's ancestor.)

Victor the first married Christina and they had twins, a boy named Victor the 2nd and girl named Veronica. James married Stephanie and they had a girl named Renee and later on a boy named Justin. Other characters who hung around with these people were Lina, Akbar, Zina, Hawkeye, and Logan. (I'm sure Validar can supply many, many more names. This Logan was the namesake of the later General Logan.)

Years later Victor the 2nd set out on his first adventures with Veronica and Justin. Veronica and Justin eventually married and have several children, a son named Jason being one of them. (Sherwood and Jallarzi are direct ancestors of Veronica and Jason.) This was our second campaign.

Victor the 2nd married Ariel and they had ten children all together. Among them was Victor the 3rd, Jacqueline, Vincent, Aaron and Rachel, to name a few. This was our briefly lived third campaign. Eventually Victor the 3rd married Irena to continue the royal line. Vincent, a mage, tried to seize the throne for himself but was defeated.

From this point there were several short lived games involving the descendents of these characters, but none of them lasted. A few of those characters may be introduced as past ancestors.

So, in my usual long winded way of saying things, if it seems that there is a great deal of history to this world, that's because there is. Nearly 22 years worth by now! It didn't all come in overnight, just added piecemeal as the years went past. There is now more then enough to do in this world to keep several bands of adventurers busy for several years.

Kylie:

Lunge and parry. Jab, deflect and stab. Having realized just how dangerous their mission is, Kylie applies herself studiously to mastering her new weapon. Fortunately, she's fairly fit, and doesn't tire too easily. Still, she gets bored after a while and has to be prodded by Lilia to keep going. Kylie doesn't wish to appear lazy or foolish in the eyes of her best link to her mother's culture. While Laucian is also an elf, Kylie doesn't feel like she's developed the same emotional link to the male.
=====
As she needs less sleep than most, Kylie is up early the next morning. She spends a little while committing the last few spells of her selection to memory. After that's done, she seeks out some food. While the meal provided by the inn isn't great, it's sometimes nice to not have to do the cooking. Kylie takes advantage of the opportunity, knowing that she'll be handling that chore a lot during their journey.

Once she's done eating, Kylie will return to her room to pack her things, then proceed to the stables. She spends a leisurely time preparing her horse for the day's ride, chatting with the others as they arrive. Knowing that the dwarf isn't particularly proficient at such things, Kylie prepares his pony as well.

Unfortunately, the weather is unpleasant, and Kylie's mood is soon ruined. She rides along, muttering unpleasant things to herself and avoiding those of her fellows who try to cheer her up. By evening, she's quite tired and grumpy, and is most displeased when Sherwood insists on pressing forward. At least she knows where they're going, and that it's not far. Still, the sight of that value and the strange fog that surrounds it stirs something in her emotions as she recalls the first time she was here.

Knowing just what this place is capable of, Kylie is careful to stay close to Sherwood, at least until they're comfortably settled inside. She's more than happy for the opportunity to dry off after that miserable ride; she is, perhaps, less modest than others in doing so than others might be, as her life has left her with little in the way of modesty.

Kylie slumps into a comfy couch to relax for awhile before starting the cooking. She drops her stuff in one of the guest rooms - strangely, the same she used last time she was here - then proceeds back downstairs to the kitchen. Fortunately, Sherwood has a good, well-equipped kitchen and a well-stocked larder. Dinner comes together easily, and the result is pleasing even to her.

After dinner, Kylie watches as Sherwood puts his Slate of Identification to use. She has actually seen it on one previous occasion, so is not surprised this time by its capabilities. She is surprised when Sherwood pauses after the last item from the bag is identified.

"What about the box Sherra found on the boat? Couldn't the Slate tell us what it is and how to open it? I'm sure we'd all like to see the contents."
=====
Later, the remaining money from the Twin Forks raid is distributed, and Kylie is quite happy to accept her share. However, she is even more interested in the distribution of the many items of power which have been identified.

Kylie turns to Validar. "As I understand it, we're to tell you what enchanted items we're interested in, and you'll make the final decisions. Not my preference, but I guess it will have to do. Not surprisingly, I would like the Bracers; I have a similar pair, but the enchantment on mine is far weaker. I also have an interest in the Shortsword, but would okay with a couple of the Daggers instead. The Ring of Feather Falling or the Boots of Levitation could make climbing much safer. On the other hand, the Girdle of Many Pouches would be an excellent option for me as well."
=====
Kylie gets a good night's sleep, and is up to make breakfast in the morning. She relaxes on a couch as the others discuss ancient history.

Grondar:

During the last few hours of the day, Grondar joins Sherra for a swimming lesson. As she gamely attempts to teach him, Grondar gives her the dwarven words for many related things: water, river, boat, swim, splash, kick, etc. Having his race's notable lack of bouyancy and suspicion towards water, this may be one of the most difficult things he has ever done. Fortunately, Sherra is much better at learning his language; by the time he can swim competantly, she ought to be quite fluent.
=====
As usual, Grondar sees to his devotions and prayers both before and after bed. One of the last to come down, he eats a quick breakfast, then joins the others in the stables. Grondar is careful to thank Kylie for seeing to his mount, as he does not wish to upset the young woman.

The ride is long, and Grondar does his best to improve his riding skills. The weather doesn't bother him overmuch, as he has lived mostly outdoors for the last few years and has survived much worse. Still, by time they reach Sherwood's tower, he's quite tired and his rear is sore. Were he less worn out, he would be amazed at the seemingly-magical fog and the tower itself, but he hasn't the energy for much more than eating and collapsing into a bed.

A rest on a couch while dinner is prepared and a scruptious meal revive Grondar somewhat. Grondar accepts his portion of the funds acquired in Twin Forks without comment. Most of it will be sent back to his order once they reach a sizable town; typically, Grondar keeps just enough money to cover his expenses, and they seem particularly low on this mission.

When the subject of magic items comes up, Grondar will watch keenly as the items are examined by Sherwood's amazing piece of slate. Grondar can't help but admire the workmanship on the suit of armor. Unfortunately, it is far to big for himself to wear. The helm is also made by a skilled hand, and Grondar examines it closely as well.

"That's a lovely suit of armor, but far too large for my small frame," he says with a bit of irony in his tone. "I'm sure one of you will get fine use from it. Despite Sherra's best efforts in my behalf, I would like to avoid the possibility of drowning if at all possible. The Helm would be my first choice, though the Boots of Water Walking or the Potion of Water Breathing would be acceptable as well. Of course, as the slowest person here, I could probably get great use out of the Boots of Speed. Otherwise, there is little here to interest me. I do think that the Bags of Holding might best be reserved for use by the entire party for transporting our heavy gear."
====
Grondar sleeps as one dead, though he does not forget his devotions.

He listens to the discussion about the earlier adventurers, and is particularly interested in the mention of a dwarven member of the band. Grondar searches his memory for any recollection of the name. He also requests a look at Sherwood's map and tries to recall anything he might know pertaining to the Blackpeak Mountains or the particular spot marked.

When the discussion comes to a close, Grondar will gladly spend some time reading in some of Sherwood's books, adding to his knowledge of the history of this land.

the long ride

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

As the day nears its end, Sherra and Grondar have a few hours to get his first swimming lesson in. Sherra doesn't have much in the way of normal clothing besides her leather armor, but she doesn't feel like spending more time drying that off, so she finds something as suitable as possible and joins the dwarf in the shallowest part of the water.

Sherra listens intently as Grondar begins to share some of his language, and she tries to put together any of those words from what she heard so long ago as a child, but no luck. A few times she has to ask Grondar to repeat himself as the splashing around makes it tough to catch a couple of the words. Sherra stays close to her dwarven companion the whole time they are in the water should he need "saving."

After getting some sleep and waking up decently early, Sherra is not in too much of a hurry as she already prepared her pack and her steed to travel. The rain during the day doesn't bother her, and least not for a while, as she keeps the hood of her cloak up and concentrates on reciting the words she learned over and over in her head. Sherra also keeps an eye of how Grondar is doing during the ride just in case. Eventually the rain does dampen her mood, but not as much as some of the others she wagers. Sherra was used to riding out worse storms than this on the open sea.

Seeing the valley stretched out below and the fog-hidden tower peaking out is truly a remarkable sight to Sherra. As the group rides through the fog, Sherra stays close and tries to pick out distant shapes in the fog. Even her sharp eyesight doesn't seem to penetrate the fog all that well, and she is glad to have Sherwood as our guide.

Sherra will marvel at the comforts inside Sherwood's tower. She will hang up her drenched cloak and dry off her leather armor quickly in one of the guest rooms she chose before coming back down and relaxing in the main room. Sherra will look at the various portraits and see if she can guess who each of them might be based on what Sherwood has told of his ancestory.

As the group begins to discuss possible choices and prefrences for magical items, Sherra will think it over before speaking up. (OOC: wasn't there some magical leather armor too?) "As far as magical items go, I'm not too worried about having the first choices or anything. I have a few items that are duplicated by what we have acquired, so there will be no need to consider those for myself. The Ring of Feather Falling matches the enchantment on my own ring. The daggers seem to be the same strength of enchantment as my own, and I have plenty. I do not think anyone here will be in need of a Dagger of Venom, so it should be disposed of in my opinion. The leather armor or the girdles are of interest, although the girdle enchanted with Giant Strength would be better suited for one of our fighters. The Boots of Speed would be nice, but Grondar is probably a better choice for those as he stated. The Bags of Holding should stay as a group item for all of our benefits. Beyond that, maybe one of the Potions of Healing, but it really matters not."

VALIDAR -

Last post -

Validar agrees that the guards have made some poor choices, but have done nothing wrong (at least that they have knowledge of) and should be released. Validar is pleased though when Sherwood gets Laucian to follow them out of Twin Forks.

Lady Angelina will report that she hasn't seen any indication that Lady Vera is anything more than what she appears. A distraught young woman who is trying to regain her lost homeland without much success thus far. It seems that many have taken up her quest and failed to return. As of late, Lady Ardel has taken a great interest in knowing more about Validar.

"Very good, milady. The Baroness indicated that you would be an expressly discreet individual to handle this task. You have done well. Continue in your task."

"I sincerely hope they do not, Validar. I am no coward, but I also know when I am severely overmatched. This band is nowhere near powerful enough to directly take on a lich, let alone several of them. Indeed, were I to gather the mightiest adventures that I know, we might succeed in defeating one lich, but at a horrific cost."

"And I am no fool, Sherwood, nor an overconfident, boorish lout. We may not be powerful enough today, but our time will come. Even were one or more of these dread liches the ultimate enemy in our quest, I am sure that those insane creatures have many layers that we will have to fight through to approach them. Do not devalue the potential that we have assembled. One day, my friend, you will see the true wisdom in the choices that were made assembling this band, motley though it seemed on first viewing."

Treasure dispersement at Sherwood's Tower-

Validar has eight identical pouches prepared for the group at the dinner table. They are a dark blue velvet and closed with a silken drawstring. Each is set next to a place setting. "The pouches are identical in make and in content. This is the financial reward for our rather easy assault on the evil there in Twin Forks, according to the plan we agreed upon." Each pouch will contain 30 of the tiger eye gems as well as 183 gold coins of the realm. Validar will have already presented Po with a small portion of treasure as well in the amount of 50 gold coins.

On the road -

Having been on campaign in the Frontier to the East, Validar is not noticeably bothered by the weather. He wears an oversize hooded cloak of dark blue over his armor, his helm stashed away in his saddlebags.

Validar looks on with an interested gaze as he sees the misted vale and Sherwood continues to lead them on. He rides in the rear as usual and keeps his keen gaze always on the look out.

"My Friends, welcome to the home built by my ancestors."

"Your hospitality comes at a welcome moment, Sherwood. It appears that the heavy rains have dampered many of our spirits here. Perhaps a warm fire and a hot meal will replace some of what we left out on the trail this day." Validar removes his drenched cloak and leaves it to dry, but does not remove his armor as yet. He waits paitiently as the others see to their clothing changes.

Validar continues to look at the tower with an interested eye. This tower has been in Sherwood's family for generations and likely contains all manner of interesting artifacts and unusual items. Validar looks at the largest painting in the central sitting room. There seems something familiar about her image, but the noble warrior cannot seem to place it.

Once everyone has gathered and Sherwood passes on his information on the tower, Validar will excuse himself. "I wish my armor to be treated with the respect it deserves and to have it dry by morning. Please excuse me while I tend to my things." Validar will head to the stairs and claim a room as his own. Once there, he will remove his armor. He wipes each of the armored plates and pieces meticulously, trying to minimize the water's damage. He then arranges each of the pieces near the fire to dry the padding underneath. Eventually, his task suitably completed, Validar will return to the main room for the hearty dinner. He wears his sword belt as usual, almost never seen without it.

Afterwards, Sherwood and his magick slate identifies the items that they carry. The amount of magickal equipment acquired is quite substantial and will increase the Guardians of Light's power and fighting ability.

Some of the members begin to place their requests for items once all have been identified. Validar will agree with Kylie's question to Sherwood about the box which references the name Nylsara.

"Sherwood and I make the decisions and it is not as autocratic a policy as it may first appear. You will see that as time plays itself out. The process also benefits those who commit to the group for a longer period of time."

Grondar and Sherra also make their opinions known. (The armor is Leather Armor of Blending +2)

"Sherwood and I have already conversed about many of the items and have some decisions ready. As you say Grondar, the Boots of Speed will benefit you greatly and as such, they are yours. There are only two of us who can truly benefit from the plate armor and therefore it shall go to Lord Corley."

"The Bags of Holding are indeed of best use as a group item and shall remain as such. Also most of the Healing potions as well, and they will be carried by the clerics, 2 with Ivy, 2 with Grondar and 1 with Laucian. In this way, they will be spread among the group should their use prove necessary."

"I agree with Sherra that the Dagger of Venom should be disposed of. Laucian, I know that you have been admiring the Mithral sword since we found it and it is now yours. I am sure that it will serve you well. Kylie, the Ring of Feather Fall is yours. Sherwood and I both had considered it for you and as you have interest, that is a perfect arrangement."

"Sherra will receive the magickal Leather armor as it befits her to make the best use of it. And I trust no one will begrudge the next presentation I wish to make. Po, the magickal shortsword is yours. As you have decided to remain with us, you must be armed appropriately and effectively. We do not have hangers on in the Guardians of the Light. We will expect you to pull your own weight and I trust that you shall."

"What do the rest of you wish?" (OOC: Please note - We had already made a preliminary dispersement of items to ease the process along. Once people confirmed interests, those items were dispersed. It is NOT a matter of first come, first served.)

"Also, once the first items have been passed to everyone, some members will receive choices of the remaining items depending on the perceived value of their awarded items. Some remaining items may be kept for future use or sold for mission funds."

The next morning -

Validar retired earlier than would be expected to his chosen guest room, a book or two with some information about the Lich Lords or the Fellowship of Mages under his arm, but is one of the first to awaken as usual.

The next morning, Sherwood tells about the Swords of Cynalon members. Specifically they focus on the dwarf Arak Stonehand and this unknown and mysterous Nightmist.

"One would not at first expect to find one of elvish decent in the Blackpeak Mountains, I would think. It is a potential fool's errand, especially since it is in the opposite direction of Corunglain and Rennydale, but the information that could be recovered if successful is substantial."

-----------------------

OOC- The move to Las Vegas has been made, but as expected is not yet completed as there is plenty to still unpack. Thanks to everyone who wished Tanya and I well. Looking forward to being here permanently (or at least semi-permanently).

Laucian

The young elf gather his equipment and head towards the garrison. The three hired bodyguards are released and converse with each other for a time. Laucian begins to keep his distance but always a watchful eye as they gather their gear and mounts. They seem to be taking their time and begin to make their leave of Twin Oaks. He follows them for a time keeping to the brush and foliage after a time he is satisfied that they are in fact no danger and returns to the others.

Once he finds Sherwood he will report his findings "The men gathered their belongs and left town towards the west. I followed them for a time, none seemed to be acting suspiciously and are in no hurry. I believe they are returning to their home lands and seem to be putting this matter behind them."

As the day draws to a close he will eat sparingly of the dinner meal and retire for the night.

He wakes early for his devotions to Ehlonna prepare his mount and gear. Finding a clear and fertile spot he will dig a hole with his dagger and proceed to plant a Yew seed near Lothar's house but out of it shadow. Once completed he will make ready his mount.
Noting the overcast skies and slight drizzle "I hope the weather holds." he mutters as he removes his cloak from a saddle bag.

Riding near the front of the group, he scans the tree lines for potential dangers. Occasionally seeing various forest dwellers in the brush. A faint smile crosses his face as he makes note of each in turn.
Sherwood's tower emerges from the misty valley and they begin to ride deeper into the Mist towards it. Laucian tried to gaze into the fog on his flanks but even with his vision it seems fruitless. He rides quickly after Sherwood as he commands so.

Laucian begins to look around the tower as Sherwood welcomes us. Having never seen a dwelling such as this he will merely look around and take in his new surroundings.

He gathers his things and stows them in one of the rooms. He quickly removes his soaked cloak and armor and dawns a green robe. And returns to the others as Sherwood brings out a large plaque and sets it on the table and identifies several of the items.
"You said that the ring grants the one who wears it protection. Protection from what exactly?"
"What does the Ring of Sustenance and the ring Of Vampiric Regeneration qualities entail?
When Sherwood takes us to look at the journals Laucian will be most interested in acquiring information on the group they are about to confront.

Laucian will approach Sherwood and Validar about his interests in the loot.
"Of all the magical items that we have acquired only a few would be of interest. If yourself or Lord Corley does not wish it, i would be interested in the Mythral sword. It would give us the added option of using me as a front line fighter as well as a distant threat. The ring Of Sustenance also would be of interest to me. I believe the potions of Healing should be dispersed amongst the clerics and maybe the mages."

As Validar and Sherwood soon disperse the magical items. Much to his surprise They have entrusted him with the Mythral sword that he has greatly admired as well as hoped for. "I thank you my friends, It is a Magnificent weapon and I will cherish it."

Post Update

Post Update:

Backtracking a bit here:

While back in Pyris, Jallarzi will inform Sherwood that one of the adventurers he summoned to gather at the Green Forest Inn was delayed and arrived after he had departed. Otto, the operator of the Inn, directed the lad to Castle Pyris where he made contact with Jallarzi.

With that, Lady Sallavarian will introduce Lord Acerion to Sherwood and Validar. Lord Acerion wears the traditional trappings of a follower of Hieroneous; plate mail armor and dark blue clothing with silver trim. He carries a battle axe with him. (I'll allow Acerion to introduce himself in his post. New character!)

Onward:

Grondar & Rumors:

Grondar's knowledge of the Black Peak Mountains is sketchy at best. It is the range of mountains that separates the Inner Kingdom from the Outer Kingdom. (Basically the mountain range south of Pyris to south of Crossroads.) It is generally considered that the Black Peaks are relatively free of monsters or fantastic creatures as they were heavily explored in the earlier days of the Kingdom. It is known that there is no overland route through the mountains, making them an impressive barrier. The map Sherwood found leads into the mountains from a path starting north of the small town of Threshold in the Inner Kingdom.

The Stonehand clan is one known to most dwarfs. Many fine warriors came from the Stonehand family. Arax Stonehand is one of the better known, but this was many years ago. Grondar is unsure of he is even still alive. There is a Gilana Stonehand out there, but she has a rather sizeable bounty on her head back in Rockhome.

Lady Angelina:
"Very good, milady. The Baroness indicated that you would be an expressly discreet individual to handle this task. You have done well. Continue in your task."
"As you wish, Lord Validar. Thank you for your kind words."

The Mystery Box:

Placing the box on the slate will reveal the following: The container is called a Box of Security, although Sherwood has never heard of such an item. Even more mysteriously, the contents of the box is something the slate calls a 'Star Crown'.

(Edited because words were missing.)

GM Notes:

Welcome the newbie!

The Leather Armor +2 of Blending was not listed, but is present.

Here is the updated list with those items that have been given out:

Full Plate Armor +2 - Corley
Leather Armor +2, Blending - Sherra
Helm of Underwater Action
Bracers AC: 4

Longsword +3 - Laucian
Horseman's Mace +3
Shortsword +1 - Po
Dagger of Venom - Disposed
4 Daggers +1
12 Darts +2

Girdle of Hill Giant Strength (19 str)
Girdle of Many Pouches
Ring of Feather Falling - Kylie

Ring of Sustenance - Allows wearer to go up to 1 week without food or drink & gain 8 hours worth of rest in only 2 hours of time. Must be worn 1 week before becoming active and after 1 weeks use will be dormant for 1 week.

Ring of Water Walking

Ring of Vampiric Regeneration - The wearer of the ring will be healed half the hit points in damage he does to a foe. (So back in Twin Forks, when Artur struck Validar for 17 pts of damage, Artur was healed 8 points at the same time, up to his HP maximum.)

Boots of Levitation
Boots of Speed - Grondar
2 Bags of Holding 1500 lbs. - Group Items
Talisman of Memorization
4 Potions of Healing - Priests
1 Potion of Water Breathing

Also, there are only 4 healing potions, so giving 2 to Ivy, 2 to Grondar, and 1 to Laucian doesn't work out. The 5th potion was Water Breathing.

Lord Corley

Post by Corley »

Corley:

Lord Corley looks on with interest as Chareos attempts to create a second staff. The young noble is mildly surprised when Chareos hands him his personal staff to use in the contest. Since no danger was expected this day, Corley is out of his armor. Since this is only a training test, and having no desire to harm Chareos, his Gauntlets are removed and placed in his sword belt.

"Very well, the first to three hits will determine the winner."

Taking the staff in hand, Corley tries to get a feel for the weapon. It is far lighter then what he is accustomed to. Once comfortable enough, Corley closes in on Chareos.

Going back to his own training with the two-handed sword, Corley tries his best to bash the mage. Alas, the mages skill with a weapon of his own training shines through scoring three hits to Corley's one.

"Alas, my friend, your skill with this weapon is superior to mine. Admittedly, I have not trained with a weapon such as this. I feared that it would break in my hands! Now if we were to engage in swordplay, the outcome may have been different!"

Finally, Sherwood and Lord Validar return, but they are not alone! Another man is with them!

"Hail, Lord Acerion! I am Lord Corley! Welcome!"

The journey to Sherwood's tower is most unpleasant, but not surprising for this time of year. If it continues to become colder then we may see snow before the end of this venture. Even protected by his cloak, Lord Corley feels chilled to the bone. Finally, the long day comes to the end as Sherwood leads us through the seemingly unnatural mist to his ancestral home.

Charger is placed in the stable and we are quickly ushered inside. The cloak is set aside to dry. Going up his quarters, Corley removes his armor and places it beside the small fireplace in his room. Changing into military uniform, Corley rejoins the others. The young man can't help but be distracted by Kylie in her wet and clingy clothes as he samples some of the beverages from the wet bar.

He marvels at the many strange and wondrous things in the tower. Heeding Sherwood's warning, Corley will look, but not touch anything. There is so much history to this important family gathered here in this tower. Corley can only hope that some day his own ancestors will have such a place recording his own families deeds.

The stew is most welcomed and Corley will consume four bowls. "A most welcomed meal, Lady Kylie!"

When the monies earned are handed out, Corley will casually examine the contents of the bag. He quickly adds the coins to his one coin bag, leaving the gems behind. Rising, he will approach Lady Ivy.

"Lady Ivy, I wish to donate my portion of the gems to your church so that they may continue their good works. Use them well."

Later as the magic items are identified and handed out.

"Speaking for myself, those items of greatest interest to me would be the ones related to combat. The girdle of giant strength, the enchanted armor, the horsemen's mace, and the ring of regeneration would top my list."

With great pride, Corley will accept the new suit of Armor, "Sherwood, Validar I thank you for this fine armor. I will wear it proudly in battle. Alas, that makes my current suit of enchanted mail redundant. Perhaps someone else could make use of its protection?"

Once that task is complete, Corley will retire to his chamber. He'll admire the armor and become accustomed to it before retiring for the evening.

Ivy:

After her day of inactivity, Ivy is pleased to be back on the road again. However, Istus plays an unpleasant trick on us and the weather is simply dreadful. The rain soaks Ivy once more and there seems to be no way to avoid it. With a sigh of unwanted acceptance, Ivy presses on with the others.

Night begins to fall and still no sign of Sherwood's Tower. She believes he knows where he is going in this horrid weather, but doubts can't help but creep into her mind. Finally the tower can be seen, but it is enveloped by a strange mist. There is powerful magic here.

Weary, but relieved, Ivy places her horse in its stall and makes her way to the tower glad to finally be out of the cold and rain. The priestess carefully towels off. Excusing herself, she will travel up to the second floor with a handful of towels. Selecting a room, Ivy closes the door behind her and strips down. Her wet garments are carefully placed around the fireplace to dry. In the meantime, Ivy changes back into her plain dress worn at Lothar's house.

Returning back down stairs, she joins many of her companions around the fire. The priestess can't help but notice the portrait over the fireplace.

"She's very lovely, Sherwood. May I inquire as to who she is?"

The warm food is most welcomed, and Ivy will agree that Kylie outdid herself on this evening.

Gathering back the fireplace, Sherwood identifies the rest of the items and the initial disbursement begins.

"As I stated earlier, many of the items collected I am not permitted to use. The bracers would be most welcomed as they are of a stronger enchantment than mine. Any of the girdles, boots, or rings would be welcomed. I could carry some of the potions or even one of the Bags of Holding for the group. Otherwise, I have no real preference."

Ivy will also retire early as the long, wet trip has made her weary. She will rise next morning and say her prayers to Azrella before going to assist Kylie in the kitchen.

Ivy will warmly greet Lord Acerion and try to engage the man in conversation to learn more about him.
"Lady Ivy, I wish to donate my portion of the gems to your church so that they may continue their good works. Use them well."
"Thank you so much, Lord Corley. My sisters will make great use of this. We will see to then needs of many with these gems."

In her gratitude, Ivy will give Corley a grateful kiss on the cheek.

Lilia

Post by Lilia »

Lilia:
Lunge and parry. Jab, deflect and stab. Having realized just how dangerous their mission is, Kylie applies herself studiously to mastering her new weapon. Fortunately, she's fairly fit, and doesn't tire too easily. Still, she gets bored after a while and has to be prodded by Lilia to keep going. Kylie doesn't wish to appear lazy or foolish in the eyes of her best link to her mother's culture. While Laucian is also an elf, Kylie doesn't feel like she's developed the same emotional link to the male.
Sensing Kylie becoming bored with her training, Lilia is surprised that she continues on anyway. "How-- human-- of her", Lilia thinks to herself. Of course it is a byproduct of the fact that humans and half-elves have shorter llifespans when compared to regular elves. When one can live hundreds of years, there is little need to rush if the situation is not an emergency. Lilia's own instruction in the shortsword took place over a ten year period. Her bow training nearly twice as long.

Not every single day was spent in training of course. There were other things to do, such as enjoy the fragrant smell of flowers, frolic with her friends, or simply sit back and watch the day go past. What's a day or two spent in observing the world when you can live hundreds of years?

Alas, humans have such short life spans that they must rush about with reckless abandon to accomplish their tasks. This Great War that Cynalon engaged in occurred while Lilia was younger. Indeed, humans have gone through five or six generations since Lilia's birth. It must be horrible to live such short lives.

Holding her hand up, Lilia will gesture for Kylie to stop. "That's enough for today, Kylie", Lilia will say in her native elvish. "There will be other days to grow accustomed to the shortsword."

The next day comes and we're on the road once more. The weather is miserable. Aerdrei Faenya must be displeased about something to send such foul conditions. (She's the elven goddess of weather, among other things.)

Lilia rides along, cursing in her native tongue under her breath. These conditions are most trying, but she will not show weakness under these circumstances. Just another of the things the Elf Maiden will have to endure to get what she wants as part of this group.

Upon seeing the tower rise up from the misty valley below, Lilia will utter a thankful prayer to Corellon Larethian in relief. At last this miserable day is coming to a close. (Corellon is the father deity of the elves.)

In spite of her misery, Lilia is greatly intrigued by this tower. The taste of magic is strong in the air. Powerful enchantments were placed here. The ring Sherwood bears seems to protect us from whatever spells are invoked here. Indeed, the ring tells the enchantments who he is. It is a notion that intrigues Lilia and she will inquire about it later, but her clansman beats her to it.. Having some idea at the power of the enchantments placed her, Lilia will observe all instructions that Sherwood gives.

"Continual Lights?", Lilia will note when she sees the tower light up as Sherwood travels deeper inside.

Once inside the tower, Lilia will dry off and change into dry clothing: a simply forest green gown that drops to her ankles, tied off with a belt. Lilia will go barefoot within the tower.

While this 'stew' is not something that Lilia will typically eat, it is nonetheless warm and filling. She'll pick around the meat and only consume the vegetables. Less than half the bowl will fill her up.

She examines the various knickknacks for things of interest. The Slate of Identification gets her immediate attention. "Ah. Now I understand why you said to wait on identifying the items gained. I see the wisdom in your words now."

The magic items gained here greatly interest Lilia. When asked, she would like to have the Bracers are they are superior to her own, the Talisman, any of the girdles, rings, or boots.

When the coins are handed out, Lilia will pocket hers for later use.

The elf maid will observe the human who returns with Sherwood and Validar with interest and caution. She will not approach him or speak to him unless he does so first.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

VALIDAR -

Back at Castle Pyris
Before Validar and Sherwood leave, Validar is introduced to a Lord Acerion. "Greatings, Lord Acerion. I am Lord Validar. Welcome to Castle Pyris. I trust you have enjoyed the hospitality here."

"Your weapon and colors mark you as a warrior of Heronious. My good friend Cereld who adventured with us in the Frontier for a time this past season, was a follower of your patron as well. However I do not recognize the name. What family do you hail from?" Validar notices that the young man gives him an unusual sense, something slightly exotic or foreign, about his features, but the noble warrior says nothing.

Treasure dispersement
Laucian - As Validar and Sherwood soon disperse the magical items. Much to his surprise they have entrusted him with the Mythral sword that he has greatly admired as well as hoped for. "I thank you my friends, It is a Magnificent weapon and I will cherish it."

"It is magnificent indeed. Use it with honor."

With great pride, Corley will accept the new suit of Armor, "Sherwood, Validar I thank you for this fine armor. I will wear it proudly in battle. Alas, that makes my current suit of enchanted mail redundant. Perhaps someone else could make use of its protection?"

"You have earned this reward, my friend. I am sure this armor will protect you in many battles with the monsters and evil which we will combat in defense of the Realm. As for your other armor, only Lord Acerion here could make use of it besides myself. Acerion is your armor enchanted?"

(OOC: Sorry about the error on the healing potions. I was thinking 5 potions when I wrote that. Make it Ivy-2, Grondar-1, Laucian-1 and the WB potion to Sherra, since she's probably the best swimmer.)

"With more requests made known, we can proceed further with more of the magickal treasure dispersal. Ivy will receive the new Bracers of Protection. If hers are better than others who employ them, then would you be so kind as to offer them? In addition for you sacrifice, you can have the Ring of Water Walking as well. The Bracers from the person who gets Ivy's magickal bracers will be sold for travelling supplies and group money."

"Corley you will receive the Ring of Vampiric Regeneration for giving up your suit of armor. As one who battles with the fury that you do, this Ring should serve you well."

"Lilia of Grunalf, I noticed that Sherwood offered the most advanced of the slain spellcaster's books to you first. Therefore, you should receive the Talisman. Chareos, you are the last to receive a prize and as a fighter and a mage, I believe the Wand of Lightning would best placed with you. For myself, I choose the Horseman's Mace. It may not get much use, but it is a magnificent weapon and one I will take great pride in owning."

"To supplement certain members whose items may not be as powerful as some others, we will give out more of the items. Grondar indicated that the Helm was greatly desired by him and so it shall be. Kylie, you may also make a choice of the remaining items for yourself."

Kylie:

"You're welcome," Kylie replies when Grondar thanks her. She's a bit surprised at her own graciousness in the matter.
=====
"Very well," Kylie says when Lilia instructs her to rest. She has worked up a sheen of perspiration, and Kylie wipes her face on her sleeve. Sitting down near the elven woman, Kylie admits her fears, speaking in elvish so as not to be overheard by the others. #There is much danger before us, as I'm sure you realize. I'm afraid. I can't help wondering if being able to defend myself properly will be the difference between whether I survive the coming months or not. I know that there are just as likely to be dangers that a sword will be of no use against, but I feel the need to be as prepared as possible. Part of me wishes I hadn't agreed to stay with this band. I don't want to die...#
=====
With a happy smile on her face, Kylie examines the velvet pouch she finds at the dinner table next to her plate. Her eyes gleam with pleasure when she sees the gems and gold inside. The pouch quickly disappears into a pocket or other hidden spot about her clothing. She notes the others examining their pouches as well and is content, knowing that they all deserve their rewards as much as she.
=====
Kylie notes Corley's interest as she's drying off, and gives the big warrior a coy smile.

She notes the large amount of her stew that he consumes, and nods when he thanks her for it. "You're most welcome, Lord Corley. A powerful man such as yourself needs to be well fed."

Kylie is a bit mystified when Corley gives his money to Ivy, but it is his choice and he can do with his reward as he sees fit. The kiss he receives in return from the beautiful priestess causes her some consternation, and she stalks away unhappily.
=====
The response to the testing of the Box is strange indeed. Kylie is surprised to hear that it is an item unfamiliar to Sherwood, who is undoubtedly the most knowledgable of them all in that area. She looks at Sherwood, curiosity in her eyes. "Can we assume that this Star Crown, whatever it is, is contained within the box? And do you know of any means to determine how to open the box, since the Slate didn't tell us?"
=====
Kylie watches with great interest as Validar begins to distribute the magical items. When Validar presents her with the ring, Kylie accepts it and immediately slips it onto her finger. She pauses for a second to admire it, then turns to Validar. "Thank you, Validar. It is nice to know that I needn't fear falling in the future." She's a bit disappointed that she didn't receive any of the better items she requested, but notes that many are still to be awarded. Moments later, she feels a bit of envy as the Shortsword is given to Po; however, she can't deny that he is a better choice for it and so does her best to hide her feelings.

Lord Corley is awarded the fine armor, and Kylie smiles in his direction. He seems quite pleased with his new armor and Kylie finds that she is happy for him.

The disbursement of enchanted items continues. Ivy receives the fine new Bracers, and Kylie once again feels the bite of bitter disappointment. They would have gone a long way to helping her survive the coming challenges. Ivy's receipt of the Ring of Water Walking seems somehow appropriate, in remembrance of her sudden dunking in the river behind Lothar's house.

After more items are given out, including the regenerative ring to Corley which pleases Kylie as it means Corley is even more likely to survive, Validar grants Kylie the option to pick a second item for herself. "Thank you for letting me choose, Validar," she says as she rises to walk over to the table on which the remaining items lay. Since she already has received the Ring of Feather Falling, the Boots of Levitation are of less interest, though still a nice item. With the Shortsword gone, she has some interest in the Knives, but there are several and she can wait. She could learn to use the Darts, but they may benefit someone else immediately. Besides, she's busy learning to use her new sword right now.

"I choose the Girdle of Many Pouches," she says, picking the item up and beginning to put it on. "I believe I can find many uses for it." Kylie then runs her gaze between Validar, Ivy and Sherwood. "I don't know how strong the enchantment on Ivy's bracers are, but I know the one on mine is not particularly strong. Perhaps we could compare them on your Slate, Sherwood, and determine if it would be worth replacing mine with hers?"

Regardless of the outcome of the Bracer discussion, Kylie returns to her seat and begins to transfer items to the Girdle. She places spell components into the pouches on the left side of the Girdle, and various other small items - such as her lockpicking tools and gold - into the pouches on the right. Even when she is finished, Kylie marvels at the fact that many of the pouches remain yet empty.

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Sherra will take the new leather armor and set it to the side, waiting for the discussions to die down and everyone to retire for the evening before seeing exactly what the blending properties will allow her to do. She will offer up a reply, "My old armor can be used however we see fit. I will keep it in my saddlebags if there not a use for it immediately. We can sell it or distribute it to another party member, current or future, as needed."

After everyone begins to head up to their rooms, Sherra will don the new armor in the guest room she is staying in. She will attempt to figure out its function and make it take on the appearance of a finely crafted and tooled suit of black leather armor. The tooling would be barely noticeable, keeping it black on black, but would be done to accent her ensemble and pay homage to her time on the open sea, as well as to the goddesses Alesh and Tymora.

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Acerion:

Upon seeing Sherwood arrive, Acerion will move to greet him, clasping wrists firmly. "Hail Sherwood, my apologies for being too late to meet you at the appointed time. The journey from Alexandria took longer than anticipated. Lady Sallavarian and Jallarzi have been most gracious." Acerion will smile at either or both of them if the ladies are still present.

"Indeed, and well met Lord Validar." Acerion will clasp wrists firmly with him as well. "Indeed I follow the teachings and wisdom of Heronious." Acerion will be pleasantly surprised to have his faith be recognized by Validar.

"I am the son of Lady Asheea Kalindor, formerly of Ardelphia. Currently her and my grandmother, the Lady Vanessa Kalindor are residing in Alexandria. It is why I have arrived so late, tending to matters involving Mother."

Acerion will prepare for the journey back to Twin Forks and pressing on to Sherwood's tower. He tends to his warhorse "Temer" and secures his weapons and pack. When everything is in order and Sherwood and Validar are ready to depart, he is more than ready.

Seeing the rest of this adventuring group engaged in various activities, Acerion will converse lightly with Sherwood, catching up on what has transpired and learning of our new destination.

Once on the road, Acerion seems tireless during the long, wet day, although he is appreciative when we finally do reach the tower and have a chance to dry off. Acerion will take some time cleaning and drying everything that was soaked, including tending to his warhorse and removing the chain barding and drying that completely as well. It is quite some time before he rejoins the others. He is wearing dark blue clothing, all adorned with silver trim, and wears only a dagger on his belt currently.

Finally, after getting a portion of the evening meal, there is time to meet the others of this group, which he will do so eagerly.

"Hail, Lord Acerion! I am Lord Corley! Welcome!"

"Well met, Lord Corley." Acerion will clasp wrists with the young Lord, giving him a firm embrace.

Ivy will warmly greet Lord Acerion and try to engage the man in conversation to learn more about him.

"A pleasure, my Lady," Acerion will kiss her hand. "I am a Paladin following the teachings and wisdom of Heronious. I was delayed in my leaving from Alexandria and was not able to join all of you at the original time as I had hoped."

The elf maid will observe the human who returns with Sherwood and Validar with interest and caution. She will not approach him or speak to him unless he does so first.

"Greetings to you, my Lady," Acerion will attempt to take Lilia's hand and kiss it as well.

Acerion will continue the same greetings with the rest of the group, giving firm clasps of wrists to the male members and kissing the hands of the ladies as allowed. He will engage anyone in further conversation if so desired after introductions have been made.

"You have earned this reward, my friend. I am sure this armor will protect you in many battles with the monsters and evil which we will combat in defense of the Realm. As for your other armor, only Lord Acerion here could make use of it besides myself. Acerion is your armor enchanted?"

"Alas, it is not, but I am suitably protected for the short term if the armor would be a benefit to yourself, Lord Validar. I was not at your engagement with the enemy and so would not dull either your honor or this fine group's by requesting something I have yet to earn."

Grondar:

Sherra finds she has to pull Grondar's soaking body from the river several times before he even starts to get the hang of swimming. It is a good thing he is not wearing any armor at the moment, or he would likely be too heavy for her to lift. Unfortunately, it's all-but-impossible for him to float, due to his dense dwarven physiology. And his stubby legs are of only minimal help when kicking. Fortunately, his arms are strong, and he can probably learn to remain on the surface as long as he continues to stroke properly.
=====
"Hail and well met, Lord Acerion," he says as the new man is introduced to the group. "May Berronar's blessings be upon you." Examining the man, Grondar notes certain indications of his beliefs. "I'm afraid I'm not an expert on human deities", the dwarf continues, "but I would venture to guess that you are a representative of Heironeous. I'm sure you will prove a powerful addition to our company."
=====
At dinner, Grondar takes a quick glance inside the pouch found upon his plate. "I take it this is our portion of the spoils from Twin Forks, Lord Validar? I thank you; I'm sure my order can put the funds to good use."
=====
Later discussion centers around the other members of Victor the First's party. There is not much that he can contribute to the topic, but Grondar adds what he may. "I'm not well familiar with those mountains, though they have something of a reputation among me people. I cannot be certain of Nightmist's reason for going there, though it would not be a bad place to retire.

"Arax Stonehand and his clan are well known among my people. Unfortunately, he would be very old now, and I know not if he yet lives. One of his descendants, Gilana lives, but may be hard to find. Also, she is not one to trust, as she has been exiled from Rockhome and a bounty placed upon her head."

Grondar scratches his chin, deep in thought. "If we decide to seek information from these two, we may be best served by splitting the group until we learn what we can."
=====
Bowing, Grondar accepts the Boots and the Potion gravely. "Many thanks, Lord Validar. I shall use these items to the best of my ability in the service of our company and the Revered Mother." He bows to Sherra as well, as she had voiced support for the idea of his receiving the Boots.

Some moments later, Validar awards him the Helm as well. Grondar's eyes light up at the fine workmanship on the helm. Picking the helmet up from the table, he places it on his head to check the fit, then removes it again. "Again, I thank you, Lord Validar. This will serve to ease my concerns greatly."

The distribution of items moves quickly, and the choices made show good judgement, about which Grondar is pleased. Many seem pleased with what they receive, and that bodes well.

Noting Sherra's words, Grondar follows her lead. "Since I now have this fine new Helm, I have no need of the old one. It can be made use of however the group sees fit." He will retrieve the helmet from his room, a plain, rounded helmet of the type commonly used by his people and many others.

Kylie:

As the evening winds down, Kylie finds herself thinking more and more on the pouch of valuables which she received. Eventually, she approaches Sherwood. Holding the pouch in her hand, which now contains the 30 gems but not the gold, she addresses the mage. "I have decided that I would like for my father to have these," she says, indicating the fine velvet pouch. "Is there any way in which you might help me see that it gets delivered to him?"
=====
The new warrior greets the various members of their party in turn. Kylie, a small woman with indications of possible elven blood, smiles weakly. "A pleasure to meet you, Acerion," she replies. "I am Kylie Lanthorn, of Elcadan." Kylie is currently wearing a simple peasant's outfit of a burgundy tunic and grey tights.

She's not certain she likes all this kissing of hands, as it seems rather forward and inappropriately intimate, but tolerates it for the moment. It seems quite popular among some circles, mostly the wealthy and nobility, as far as she can tell.

Long Winded Sherwood

Post by Sherwood »

Sherwood:
"And I am no fool, Sherwood, nor an overconfident, boorish lout. We may not be powerful enough today, but our time will come. Even were one or more of these dread liches the ultimate enemy in our quest, I am sure that those insane creatures have many layers that we will have to fight through to approach them. Do not devalue the potential that we have assembled. One day, my friend, you will see the true wisdom in the choices that were made assembling this band, motley though it seemed on first viewing."
"Nor did I suggest you were, Validar. I certainly do not make little of the potential of the people here. After all, they are here because Jallarzi and I considered them to have great potential in the first place. One day we may be able to confront these lichs. It just won't be tomorrow, or next week, or even next month."

Sherwood will go and greet Lord Acerion when Jallarzi mentions his presence. "Very good. Another strong sword arm does not hurt. Or in his case a strong battleaxe."

After informing Lord Validar, Sherwood will add, "You will have interest in Lord Acerion. His family were minor nobles in the Barony of Stone Ridge and they also lost their homes when Ardelphia fell."
"I am pleased that you managed to arrive. We've already completed the mission that we set out upon, but have uncovered many other plots against the Crown that demand our attention. You are most welcomed to ride with us."

(BTW: Lady Sallavarian and Jallarzi are one and the same. Lady Jallarzi Sallavarian.)

Teleporting back with Acerion won’t be a problem, but bringing his warhorse along will be. Too much weight. Fortunately, Jallarzi has a Shrink spell on a spare scroll, shrinking the horse down to dog sized. Since it is much lighter now, the mount can be teleported back to Twin Forks along with everyone else by Lifeshield.

Sherwood will also bring Lord Acerion up to date on what has transpired thus far.

Upon returning to Twin Forks, Sherwood is surprised to find Kylie actively learning how to use the shortsword. Even more surprising, Lilia is instructing her in the elvish method of using the weapon. That method probably is better for Kylie to master since it stresses agility over muscle.
Once he finds Sherwood he will report his findings "The men gathered their belongs and left town towards the west. I followed them for a time, none seemed to be acting suspiciously and are in no hurry. I believe they are returning to their home lands and seem to be putting this matter behind them."
"Very good then. Thank you, Laucian."

The ride home is an unpleasant one for all involved. The trip takes longer then Sherwood remembers it to be. Of course, it's rare to have visitors to the tower that arrive by way of horseback. Magical travel alternatives are always so much faster!

Finally the terrain becomes more familiar and the tower comes in sight. Sherwood leads the way down into the valley and past the obscuring mists to the tower itself. The horses are stabled for the evening and we all go inside to dry off and relax.
"You said that the ring grants the one who wears it protection. Protection from what exactly?"

Indeed, the ring tells the enchantments who he is. It is a notion that intrigues Lilia and she will inquire about it later, but her clansman beats her to it.
"Protection from the powerful enchantments laid upon this tower. The tower can, for lack of better words, defend itself from outsiders should they try to gain entrance."

"I am not sure if the same thing applies when it comes to clerical magic, but the mage who casts certain spells are also immune to that spell. For instance, a Wizard Lock magical seals a chest or door, preventing it from being opened by outsiders. But it will open easily for the mage who casts the spell. Why?"

"My ancestor, Renee Sculley, theorized that just as each of us has a different appearance and different style of handwriting, that the same applies to magic as well. Each mage has a distinct and identifiable magical signature. It is this signature that allows an enchantment to identify its caster and not affect him. The same is true for this tower. This ring holds the signature of Renee, as she is the one who built the tower and laid the enchantments upon it. She devised a series of mage spells with this very idea in mind."
"Continual Lights?", Lilia will note when she sees the tower light up as Sherwood travels deeper inside.
"Of an advanced fashion, yes."

Once everyone is situated and dried off, the task of the evening meal comes to the forefront. The pantry is better stocked than Sherwood remembers it to be. Of course it could be part of the enchantment upon the tower too. Regardless the stew is hardy and filling.

Returning back down stairs, she joins many of her companions around the fire. The priestess can't help but notice the portrait over the fireplace.

"She's very lovely, Sherwood. May I inquire as to who she is?"
Seeing that members of the adventuring band eyeing the painting over the fireplace, Sherwood will speak up about her. "That is Darya. She is--" Sherwood abruptly pauses in his explanation, as if trying to find the proper words. "She was my wife." But Sherwood doesn't say anything beyond that.

"The other portraits are of my ancestors. Over there is James the Red. That one there is a family portrait of made just after the wedding of Justin and Veronica. It shows Victor the first and his wife Christina, along with James and Stephanie. Victor the second is there along with Renee."

Retiring to my private chambers on the third floor, Sherwood changes clothes and returns downstairs with the Slate of Identification. A handy magic item that greatly simplifies the identification of enchanted items. Frees up spell slots too.
"What about the box Sherra found on the boat? Couldn't the Slate tell us what it is and how to open it? I'm sure we'd all like to see the contents."
"The slate only identifies what the item is and what magical properties it possess. It skimps over the fine details and only generalizes."

Pulling the metal chest out, Sherwood places it on the slate. "I've heard of a Chest of Security, but not a Box of Security. Assuming that the two are related, then the inside of the box is much like the inside of a Bag of Holding. An extra-dimensional pocket inside a very sturdy container."

"Likewise, exactly what a 'Star Crown' is also remains a mystery. Since this Box cannot be opened by normal means, magical ones must be used. Everyone stand back just in case something goes wrong."

First Sherwood will attempt to Knock the sealed container. The spell fails as the box remains tightly shut. A Dispel Magic follows and even that fails to break the enchantment. "Opening this chest is proving to be very problematic at best. I may have to consult with my Uncle on how to proceed from this point."

Handing out Magic Items:
"Sherwood and I make the decisions and it is not as autocratic a policy as it may first appear. You will see that as time plays itself out. The process also benefits those who commit to the group for a longer period of time."
"The general idea is that we distribute the magic items to those who can make the best use of them. Inevitably, someone may be shortchanged this time around, but they will receive higher consideration the next time. So someone who ends up with 2 items now, may only receive 1 later. Likewise, someone with only 1 magic item may gain 2 from the next time we hand out magic items. It will balance itself out over time."
As Validar and Sherwood soon disperse the magical items. Much to his surprise They have entrusted him with the Mithral sword that he has greatly admired as well as hoped for. "I thank you my friends, It is a Magnificent weapon and I will cherish it."
"Use it well, my friend."
With great pride, Corley will accept the new suit of Armor, "Sherwood, Validar I thank you for this fine armor. I will wear it proudly in battle. Alas, that makes my current suit of enchanted mail redundant. Perhaps someone else could make use of its protection?"
"I am sure you will, Corley. Also, it is a fine idea to allow another to use an existing magic item that you have replaced by a more powerful one. It will benefit the entire group."

"One would not at first expect to find one of elvish decent in the Black Peak Mountains, I would think. It is a potential fool's errand, especially since it is in the opposite direction of Corunglain and Rennydale, but the information that could be recovered if successful is substantial."
"I don't believe my ancestor would leave this map in this location by accident. Perhaps to refresh his own memory about something. After the situation with Lord Cavius has been resolved, then we can investigate this clue. If Nightmist is still alive and at this location, then we will gain vital information on the Cult."

Sherwood will accept the pouch of gems. "I can arrange it. In fact, you could deliver them yourself if you wish. I can take you there and back before resting this evening."

Over the morning meal, Sherwood will offer the following information. "My ancestor wrote at great length on his theory of the origin of the Blackflame it self. He hypothesized that it existed at the conjunction of the Elemental Plane of Fire and the Negative Material Plane. It does seem reasonable as it is a type of fire, but one that feeds upon the life force of others. The Negative Material Plane is said to absorb the life force of the living, so it is a logical conclusion."
I do what is necessary.

Lounging at Sherwood's Tower

VALIDAR -

Backing up to Pyris again-

Sherwood - "Nor did I suggest you were, Validar. I certainly do not make little of the potential of the people here. After all, they are here because Jallarzi and I considered them to have great potential in the first place. One day we may be able to confront these lichs. It just won't be tomorrow, or next week, or even next month."

"If your goals are not kept firmly in your sights they are just dreams, little more than smoke. I am committed to my goals. Many of which will take years to complete. I am not as impatient as you seem to imply."

Acerion - "I am the son of Lady Asheea Kalindor, formerly of Ardelphia. Currently her and my grandmother, the Lady Vanessa Kalindor are residing in Alexandria. It is why I have arrived so late, tending to matters involving Mother."

Validar is intrigued when he hears the reference to Ardelphia. "I have heard the name Kalindor before. Welcome to the Guardians of the Light. I imagine the ride alone from Alexandria took much of your time. Have you yourself ever been to Ardelphia?"

After informing Lord Validar, Sherwood will add, "You will have interest in Lord Acerion. His family were minor nobles in the Barony of Stone Ridge and they also lost their homes when Ardelphia fell."

"I recognized the name Kalindor from my readings. I have been perusing information on Stone Ridge recently since meeting the Lady Ardel. He is a very interesting individual in that sense."

Back to the Tower -

At dinner, Grondar takes a quick glance inside the pouch found upon his plate. "I take it this is our portion of the spoils from Twin Forks, Lord Validar? I thank you; I'm sure my order can put the funds to good use."

"It is indeed, my dwarven friend. Certainly the uses we have chosen for this money are more noble and honorable than that of Lothar and his bandits or even the wretched Merchant Guilds of Elcadan."

That is Darya. She is--" Sherwood abruptly pauses in his explanation, as if trying to find the proper words. "She was my wife."

"A fine example of Cynalon's beauty, my friend. I am sorry for your loss." Validar says nothing more about the matter, not wanting to tread on areas that may be sensitive.

Validar grants Kylie the option to pick a second item for herself. "Thank you for letting me choose, Validar," she says as she rises to walk over to the table on which the remaining items lay.

"Not at all, young Kylie. Choose well," Validar will respond as he watches her make her decision. Kylie chooses the Girdle of Pouches.

Once the comparison of the Bracers are made, it will be determined that Kylie's bracers are of a lesser enchantment that Ivy's and that the others who use them are the same power as Ivy's. "Very well, Kylie, it appears you have a slight increase in protection as well. Kylie's old magickal bracers will be sold or traded for group funds for supplies and equipment."

Sherra and Grondar make mention of their extra regular equipment that has been replaced by new magickal items. "It never hurts to have back-up equipment in the field. I remember the fireball that a mage hit us with that destroyed many of the Seekers items. We were days away from any sizable towns and without extra arms and armor, many would have been near defenseless."

"I trust all of you are pleased with the dispersement of the treasures. Anyone who wishes the daggers may take one. Do any of the mages or scouts have knowledge of dart use? If not, then these too will be converted to funds for the group. The last item of power that we must make use of it the Girdle of Giant Strength. I propose that Lord Corley receive this as well. It would preclude you, Corley, from the next dispersal however as you already received two items. As for the Ring of Sustenance and the Boots of Levitation, we can store them, trade them or make use of them."

"As for your other armor, only Lord Acerion here could make use of it besides myself.

"I thank you for your deference, but I am sure that you noticed that my plate armor was fashioned especially for me. I am not desiring to give it up lightly. That said, it seems foolish to store the armor away until you have 'proven youself' to us. I know that the followers of Heironeous fight with honor and valor and if you are worthy of your calling then earning this armor is a trivial detail sure to be accomplished in due time. Unless you choose to wait, the armor is yours, Lord Kalindor."

Talk turns to the Swords of Cynalon's possible surviving members -
Grondar scratches his chin, deep in thought. "If we decide to seek information from these two, we may be best served by splitting the group until we learn what we can."

"It would serve to speed our gathering of information, as that is what these missions entail. Perhaps we will learn another clue or two in Elcadan as well."

Validar listens intently to the talk about the Blackflame. He looks over to Ivy, knowing that she will take even more interest in the quest with this supposition, being an enemy to all denisons of the Negative Material Plane.

Chareos

The young mage looks around for a second staff. Close by he pen he finds a rake and quick removes the head. Walking back to Lord Corley he hands him his quarter staff. The rake handle is far lighter than he is used to and though similar in use. He grasps the staff with both hands and faces his comrade.
Noticing his uncertainty with the weapon, "When you are ready we will begin."
With a loud cry Corley gets with in his defenses and strikes him in his side. Chareos is pleased that the young noble will give him a challenge. As they circle and parry each other staves,Chareos sees a few opens and takes them in turn striking with three unanswered blows.

"Alas, my friend, your skill with this weapon is superior to mine. Admittedly, I have not trained with a weapon such as this. I feared that it would break in my hands! Now if we were to engage in swordplay, the outcome may have been different!"

"Aye, I have trained with the quarter staff for sometime now. Nor have I have the training with such weapons as you are comfortable with my friend. What you say is very true, if we were engaged in swordplay I believe it would be very different. But I have never been one to turn down a challenge. If you would like to do so in the future, with practice swords of course, I would welcome it." he says with a smile.

Lord Validar and Sherwood soon return to Twin Oaks with a stranger wearing Plate mail armor and dark blue clothing with silver trim.
"Hail and well met Lord Acerion, I am Chareos." reaching out with outstretched hand.

After studying for sometime he will go to sleep. The morning comes to fast as he dresses and proceeds to gather his gear. After double checking he has everything he heads down stairs and greets the others, partaking in a filly breakfast of eggs.

The ride to Sherwood's tower is rather unpleasant and cold for the young mage. While riding there he gathers his cloak around him trying to keep the rain and cold at bay. Unfortunately this is a losing battle as he quickly becomes soaked to the bone. The tower emerges from the distance from a most unnatural mist. Chareos looks upon it with wide eyes as they slowly make their way to his home.
Once his mount is in the stables they are ushered inside by Sherwood. Once inside The mage begins to look around in marvel at all the wondrous sights. He begins to look at a sculpture as Sherwood reveals not to touch anything. He quickly pulls his hands away and removes his wet cloak placing near the fireplace to dry.

The meal is served, a fine smelling beef stew, Of which he will have two helpings
Validar explains of the contents of the bags near each place setting. He gathers the bag feeling its weight and then ties it to his belt loop. After dinner Chareos will begin to help out
" Kylie you have certainly outdone yourself." as he begins to help clearing the dishes.

Sherwood brings a slate down and places it on the table. Chareos eyes it curiously. It is soon revealed it tis a very rare Slate of Identification.
Several of the items are placed on the slate including a wand of lighting with its command words.
Having all the items Identified Validar and Sherwood ask of what each of us want and hand out what would be best suited for each member.
"Many of these items I am not proficient in so most would be a waste on me. I will leave it in your hands to decide what is best used by me."

He waits patiently as the others are handed items best suited for them.

"I thank you, I will use it wisely." he states as he begins to examine the wands making and writings written upon it. He makes a mental note of the Command words and will not utter them. Noting that Sherwood has apparently been over looked or cares for none," What of Sherwood's selection, In fairness he should receive or choose something."

Afterward Sherwood begins to explain of information on the Black Flame Cult. Chareos ears perk up and he begins to follow Sherwood to gain more information that his ancestors journals entail. He will gather a few books related to the topics relating the the band of warriors that first confronted this cult.
He will head to bed and begin to study the books in which he borrowed as well as memorize more spells before going to bed. If he was time he will begin to examine the wand more thoroughly and copy the wands marking on a piece of parchment for his personal records.

Eating of the meal provided by Kylie and Ivy, Chareos listens with attentive ears. This information is slight disturbing to the young mage. It also raises his curiousity. He quietly thinks to himself thinking of the possibilities. 'Is there a creature that produces the same flame as he had witnessed. And if so could this creature be summoned to this plane and there by worshipped. .' he shutters at this idea and quickly sets it from his mind.

Kylie:
Sherwood will accept the pouch of gems. "I can arrange it. In fact, you could deliver them yourself if you wish. I can take you there and back before resting this evening."
Kylie looks up at Sherwood, a note of surprise and delight in her eyes. "Really?! Could you?!" She pauses for a moment. "It would mean a lot to me to see my father again."

A thought comes to Kylie and she puts out her hand. "Could I have the pouch back? Before we go, I'd like to make one change." Taking the pouch, Kylie begins to add gold from her pockets to the bag. She returns the 183 pieces the were originally in the bag, and adds 17 pieces of her own, for a total of 200. That plus the 30 gems should be sufficient for her father to live on for quite some time, should she not come back.

"Alright. I'm ready."
There is a sadness in Kylie's eyes, even as she makes the exchange. "These Bracers were a gift from my mother, so they have a sentimental value. However, I know my mother would want me to survive, too, so I will take the better item." She removes her bracers and places them somewhat reluctantly on the table. Picking up Ivy's bracers, she walks back to her seat, the bracers still in her hand.
" Kylie you have certainly outdone yourself." as he begins to help clearing the dishes.
"I'm glad you enjoyed this simple meal, Chareos," Kylie replies with a smile.

Sherra:
Sherra and Grondar make mention of their extra regular equipment that has been replaced by new magickal items. "It never hurts to have back-up equipment in the field. I remember the fireball that a mage hit us with that destroyed many of the Seekers items. We were days away from any sizable towns and without extra arms and armor, many would have been near defenseless."
"I mentioned it mainly because my old armor is slightly enchanted and so it might fetch a decent price should we decide to sell it. I agree though to be prepared and will store it in my saddlebags in case something unforseen happens," Sherra will reply.

Sherra will also store away the potion, and although she feels quite confident she would never need it, she will not press her luck with Tymora. There might be some yet unrevealed reason or opportunity where having just such a potion could prove vital.

Sherra will allow Acerion his formal greeting and smile at him. "A pleasure to meet you, Lord Acerion." She wonders about the adding of yet another seemingly-powerful warrior to the group and contemplates what sort of additional dangers might actually be waiting for us.

back at the castle:

Validar is intrigued when he hears the reference to Ardelphia. "I have heard the name Kalindor before. Welcome to the Guardians of the Light. I imagine the ride alone from Alexandria took much of your time. Have you yourself ever been to Ardelphia?"

"Thank you for the welcome. The ride, although pleasant, was indeed a long one. The only memories I have of Ardelphia are fleeting ones, better remembered by the words related to me from Mother. All of my recent years have been engaged in my pilgrimage to learn the teachings of Heironeous and qualify for paladinhood."

Acerion almost laughes at seeing Temer reduced to the size of a hound, but keeps himself composed. It is an efficient way to manage magical arrival to Twin Forks. He will spend some time after their arrival with his faithful warhorse, once returned to normal size, to make sure the animal does not feel it was somehow being punished.

"I am sorry," Grondar says, laying a hand on Sherwood's arm. "I sense sadness and regret in your words my friend. If you ever wish to discuss it, my door is always open to you."
"The other portraits are of my ancestors. Over there is James the Red. That one there is a family portrait of made just after the wedding of Justin and Veronica. It shows Victor the first and his wife Christina, along with James and Stephanie. Victor the second is there along with Renee."
Grondar nods. "Ahh... It is good to put faces with the names we have heard so much about."
=====
Grondar listens as Sherwood discusses both the missing members of the original party and theories of the Blackflame. While both are fascinating, he has little to add, and thus remain quiet.
"Very well, Validar. I shall place my old helm in one of the Bags of Holding belonging to the group. Thus it will be there should we need it later." Grondar puts actions to words and the helmet disappears into one of the Bags.
As for the Ring of Sustenance and the Boots of Levitation, we can store them, trade them or make use of them."
Grondar clears his throat, then presents another option. "It occurs to me that Laucian expressed an interest in that Ring. I see no reason why it would not be appropriate for him to have it.

"Also, both Ivy and Sherra expressed an interest in Boots. Ivy has received two fine items, and as one of our archers, I would think that Sherra would benefit greatly from those Boots. I would suggest giving them to her.

"I hope you will not feel that I speak out of turn."

Tower musings...

VALIDAR -

In Pyris Castle-
Acerion - "Thank you for the welcome. The ride, although pleasant, was indeed a long one. The only memories I have of Ardelphia are fleeting ones, better remembered by the words related to me from Mother. All of my recent years have been engaged in my pilgrimage to learn the teachings of Heironeous and qualify for paladinhood."

"It seems your pilgrimage has met with some success."

Treasure disbursal -
Chareos - Noting that Sherwood has apparently been over looked or cares for none," What of Sherwood's selection, in fairness he should receive or choose something."

"Friend Chareos, Sherwood already deferred taking any magick as well as treasure. I am sure that any of these items are a mere redundancy to what he already holds claim to and as you can see by this marvelous tower, a few gold coins are meaningless directly to one such as he. Now the item in that box I am sure has gotten our host's attention."

Kylie - "These Bracers were a gift from my mother, so they have a sentimental value. However, I know my mother would want me to survive, too, so I will take the better item." She removes her bracers and places them somewhat reluctantly on the table. Picking up Ivy's bracers, she walks back to her seat, the bracers still in her hand.

"Are you certain you wish to give up a family heirloom, young Kylie. There is a greater enchantment on the ones you now hold, but if these have sentimental value," Validar says pointing to the enchanted bracers on the table, "perhaps it is better to keep them and their memories. You are in a group that will protect you. While not as powerful as many of the adventuring bands that have formed in Cynalon, we are growing in power." Validar looks over to Po and Acerion as he says this. "If you truly wish to take Ivy's bracers over your own, then by all means do so. However, there are more important things than the blind acquisition of the most powerful magickal items attainable."

"I mentioned it mainly because my old armor is slightly enchanted and so it might fetch a decent price should we decide to sell it. I agree though to be prepared and will store it in my saddlebags in case something unforseen happens," Sherra will reply.

"Ah, now that is another story entirely. I think that we should gain some funds for items we need, but would rather carry the items than coins. Once we reach Elcadan, we can decide what to trade off to pay for our lodgings, meals and supplies."

Acerion - "Yes, I can definitely see the quality of your armor. Let us talk no further about this. I shall take the offered magical armor. Thank you, Lord Validar."

"We are a group and have committed to being one. Therefore the group's interests are what are most important. This will benefit you and few others here. Corley can only wear one suit of armor and if he keeps eating and growing, he may not fit that one before long," Validar says with a smirk.

"What do you think of my proposal regarding the Girdle, Sherwood? I think it should go to he who would get the most use from it. There is no question that Lord Corley will be in the forefront of battle time and time again. His bravery is unquestionable. However, that means that his magickal gauntlets will be redundant and therefore available to be passed on as well. Your thoughts?"

"I agree that we should make use of what we can in th best possible way, my dwarven friend. Laucian did indeed express an interest in the Ring. Also while Sherra mentioned the Boots of Speed, the surprisingly quiet Lilia has also expressed interest in both the Ring and the Boots. Sherwood, perhaps you could resolve this minor dilemma?"

"And friend Grondar, this is not a military order, despite the number of nobles we have assembled here. You are certainly free to speak your mind at all times and I trust you shall. For only by accepting and utilizing the knowledge and skill of all of us, will we reach our full potential as a group. Suggestions are always welcome."

Kylie:

At Kylie's request, Sherwood calls upon the mystical power imbued within his sword, Lifeshield. Within moments, Kylie finds herself standing outside her father's home. She has only seen his new house, and the town in which he now lives, a few times. It is a nice house, if small, yet far better than the hovel in which they lived in the slums of Elcadan. Light streams from the windows in the deepening twilight, indicating that he is home and yet still awake.

Kylie looks up at the mage for a moment, uncertainly. Smiling supportively, Sherwood nods, and Kylie turns. She begins to walk, hesitantly at first, toward the door. Surprisingly, by time she reaches the door, she is nearly running.

A knock, then another. Seconds later, the door swings slowly open. "Yes?" A face peers out, at once familiar and yet not. Tomas Lanthorn looks healthier and happier than Kylie can remember ever seeing him. There is a moment's pause, then recognition blossoms in his eyes.

"Kylie!" he exclaims, reaching out and grabbing her in a big bear hug.

Arms pinned to her sides, Kylie still manages to return the hug with her forearms. "Hello... Dad," she says, a bit stiffly.

"Come in, come in," Tomas says, his eyes bright as he gestures into the small main room of the cabin. "Please, have a seat. Can I get you anything? Food? Something to drink?"

Kylie wanders inside, taking a seat at the small table which serves as both desk and dining table. A few odd items are scattered about, and a deck of cards sits on one side. She hadn't realized that her father played cards. Perhaps this is something new, since moving here.

"I'm fine, thank you. We just ate." Kylie pauses for a moment. "You look well, Dad. Life here seems to agree with you..."

Tomas joins her at the table. "That it does, sweetheart. I can't thank you or the Lady Sallavarian enough for giving me this opportunity. I never thought I could enjoy life again, but I was wrong.

"How are you, Kylie. You look well, too."

Kylie smiles. "I'm doing well, Dad.

"It seems I have a new occupation. Jallarzi's cousin Sherwood has recruited me into one of his adventuring bands. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it yet. It's certainly dangerous, but I suppose that we are doing something worthwhile. Just in the last few days, we shut down a bandit who had been plaguing the roads between Timberline and High Guard."

Kylie pauses for a second, summoning her courage. "I-- I brought you a present," she says. Pulling the velvet bag from under her cloak, Kylie sets it on the table in front of her father.

Slowly, Tomas lifts the small bag, noting the heft of it. Cautiously, he looks inside. His eyes widen in surprise as he takes in the plethora of gold coins with the twinking gems scatter amidst. "Kylie! I-- I don't know what to say. I-- I can't take this. I have enough to get by, as you can see. Surely you have more use for this than I." He closes the bag and begins to push it back across the table toward his daughter.

Shaking her head, Kylie keeps her hands in her lap. "It is yours. I have no use for it. Everything I need has been provided by Sherwood."

Kylie swallows, hard. "Listen, Dad. The group I'm in - the Guardians of the Light, we call ourselves - we have a lot more to do. And it's going to get very dangerous, very soon. I-- I don't know if I'm going to make it back; whether I'll ever see you again." Tears begin to glisten in her eyes. "At least this way, I know you'll be alright."

Tomas sits silently, staring at his daughter, an ugly worm of dread wriggling in his gut. Long moments pass as a gulf of silence looms between father and daughter.

"Are-- Are you sure about this? That this is what you want to do?" Tomas asks. "I know that Sherwood's bands do good work, and have achieved important successes that improve life for everyone else.

"Still, you're my daughter. And while I haven't been much of a father," he holds out a hand to forstall any disagreements from Kylie, "I can't bear the thought of losing you. Still, you must do what you believe is right."

Unwilling to meet her father's gaze, Kylie keeps her eyes on the tabletop. "No, I'm not sure. But I am committed. I made a promise to Sherwood and the others that I would continue on with them. And I believe that, ultimately, what we do will benefit those living the life we did and help supplant the decadent rulers of Elcadan. Perhaps it will save others from suffering as we did.

"I have to try." The tears leaving streaks down Kylies face are matched by those of her father.

Tomas sits quietly for several more seconds. "I have some news, too," he says, changing the subject to something pleasanter. "I have met someone. While no one will ever take the place of your mother, she helps to relieve my sadness." He pauses to look at Kylie, who has lifted her head and is gazing at him with an expression of wonder. "Her name is Myriel; she's a widow and a couple years younger than me. She's not beautiful like your mother, but she's good to me and truly seems to care.

"Perhaps, when you return - and I have to believe that you will - you can meet her."

Kylie manages a fragile smile, wiping the tears from her face. "That sounds nice, Dad. I'd like that." Tomas smiles.

It occurs to Kylie suddenly that Sherwood is still waiting outside. "Look, Dad. I'm sorry, but I must go," she says, rising. "Sherwood is waiting outside to take me back to the others."

"Sherwood?! Here?! You should have told me, dear. We should have invited him inside..."

"It's okay, Dad. We needed this time together." Kylie gives her father a fierce hug. "Thank you."

Tomas returns the hug and kisses Kylie on top of her head. "It was great to see you again, Kylie. Please, be careful."

"I will, Dad," Kylie replies, releasing her father and stepping back. Turning, she retreats to the door and steps outside as Tomas follows in her footsteps as far as the door.

"Goodbye," she says softly, glancing back over her shoulder at her father, limned in the light at the door. She fades into the quickly growing shadows and Tomas closes the door slowly, a melancholy attitude drowning his earlier cheer.

Kylie makes her way back to where Sherwood awaits. "I'm sorry for taking so long. I'm ready to go back." Somehow, in her own head, her words sound like a death sentence.

"That's okay, Kylie. It wasn't that long and it gave me a chance to relax for a few minutes." Casting a spell, he opens a gate which deposits them back in his tower.

"Thank you, Sherwood," Kylie says softly. She retreats to her room for the rest of the evening. Sleep is long in coming, but she eventually finds an inner calm she didn't know was there, and with it, hope.

Sherra will smile at Grondar for his words. She is glad to see the bond she was hoping they were forming. It feels good to her to finally begin to have people around her she can feel comfortable with and allow herself to grow close to.

Laucian

Laucian accepts both the sword and potion with a smile. He will place the potion next to his place at the table and unsheathe the Mythral sword a fraction and check the blade of the new sword.
"I would like to keep my old sword with me for a time. If anyone here is in need of it in the future or wish to learn how to handle this weapon, I will gladly teach them."

Grondar begins to speak up on his own behalf.
"Friend Grondar, I do appreciate your concern on my own behalf, However I was merely curious of their qualities and benefits. Seeing How I received two items,a new sword and potion, to use in the best interest of the party, I do not feel it necessary from me to possess such a ring even though its most beneficial qualities."
"These coming months will be hard pressed with the coming of winter, and provisions might be scarce when we are in the wilderness, I for one do know how to hunt and that will lesson this concern to an extent. This ring should be used by the party as a whole,as we all could benefit from its use. Though," He looks over at the four empty bowls before Corley, with a smirk froming on his face. "I believe Corley would be most beneficial of such an item due to his monstrous appetite."
"Good day Lord Acerion, I am Laucian Nailo of Clan Grundalf." He will shake his outstretched arm with a firm grip. "It is good to have you join us."

Backing up a moment

The next morning, Sherwood tells about the Swords of Cynalon members. Specifically they focus on the dwarf Arak Stonehand and this unknown and mysterous Nightmist.

"One would not at first expect to find one of elvish decent in the Blackpeak Mountains, I would think. It is a potential fool's errand, especially since it is in the opposite direction of Corunglain and Rennydale, but the information that could be recovered if successful is substantial."

Laucian absently moves a piece of hair from his face and speaks, "When I was but a child the priest who raised me, Ivellios told me stories. One of the tales told of a race of elves would detested sunlight so much they made their home in the earth an rarely ventured forth from the abyss they embraced. If I recall the tale correctly they were known as The Drow, it may be possible that this Nightmist may be of this race."

"It is indeed possible, friend Laucian. The Seekers have a member who goes by the name of Mercy who has one parent that is a drow. Mercy is a follower of Mortidus. I cannot say I learned much about the man, but his presence is clear proof that drow have interacted in the surface world."

"I believe you are right," the dwarf replies, obviously a bit disgruntled, "I'm afraid I lost track of Lilia's request." He glances over at the elven woman. "I appologize. I did not mean to slight you, dear lady."

Grondar turns back to Validar and Sherwood. "Now that you mention it, Lilia would be a good choice for the Boots as well. I believe she has only received the one item so far - the Talisman. Since she's both an archer and a mage, the ability to get up above the fray might be very useful to her."

He pauses to consider for a moment. "If I'm not mistaken, Chareos has only received one item so far as well. While he didn't specify any particular preferences - rather leaving it to you to decide for him - it seems to me that he could benefit from the Ring as much as anyone. If a specific need arises, he could always lend it to someone else."
A chuckle escapes Grondar's lips. "You are probably correct, Lord Validar. I'm not one known for keeping my peace. While I can't claim any special knowledge or skill in this matter, any extra viewpoint often has its own value."
Sherra will reply, "Thank you for your speaking up on this matter Grondar, but Validar is right about my initial interests. The armor and potion I've already received are quite satisfactory, and especially if Lilia is still interested in the boots, she should be considered for them over me."

Sherra will smile at Grondar for his words. She is glad to see the bond she was hoping they were forming. It feels good to her to finally begin to have people around her she can feel comfortable with and allow herself to grow close to.
Grondar returns the smile, though it looks not near so charming on his weather-beaten face. "It is my pleasure, Lady Sherra. And you're right that Lilia would be an excellent recipient for the Boots. I would not want anyone to leave here feeling they did not receive due consideration or compensation for their contributions."
The dwarf turns to Laucian. "While I suspect that you are as likely to end up using the Potion to Heal someone other than yourself as I am with the one entrusted to me, if you are content, then that is sufficient. As I said to our lovely companion," Grondar winks over at Sherra with a happy smile on his face, "I would not see anyone go away disappointed or feeling unappreciated."
=====
The discussion regarding the drow brings a frown to Grondar's face. "I know little personally of the drow, or deep elves as they are sometimes known among my people. However, I do know that they have long been antagonistic toward us and we have often warred over lands far beneath the surface."

Kylie stops to stare at Validar for several moments, clearly offended. "I am certainly well aware that there are more important things than the blind acquisition of the most powerful magickal items attainable! At the same time, I don't believe my mother would value sentiment over my life. While I understand that there are many of us looking out for one another, there is likely little you or anyone else can do about a sudden arrow or spell directed at me.

"However, since I am torn in my own mind on this issue, I will sleep on it and make my final decision in the morning." That said, she turns away from Validar to focus on considering her choice further.
=====
The next morning, Kylie takes Ivy's old Bracers and places her own in the Bag of Holding with Grondar's helmet. If anyone asks, she will explain her choice. "In truth, it was this bow," she says, indicating the fine elven bow strapped across her back, "that my mother graced me with that was special to her and is most closely linked to her memory. I cannot envision ever parting with it. The Bracers, on the other hand, were just another useful item in her mind, and certainly not of greater value than her daughter's life. Thus, I will go with whatever is likely to keep me alive long enough to one day see her again, if she still lives."

VALIDAR -

Kylie stops to stare at Validar for several moments, clearly offended. "I am certainly well aware that there are more important things than the blind acquisition of the most powerful magickal items attainable! At the same time, I don't believe my mother would value sentiment over my life. While I understand that there are many of us looking out for one another, there is likely little you or anyone else can do about a sudden arrow or spell directed at me.

"On the contrary, young Kylie. There is much that can be done and will continue to be done. Sherwood confered Stone Skin spells upon some of you before and I am sure that in the future, whether by him or another, that will also be available at times. Our tactics and our abilities and our planning will also limit the danger that each of us are placed under. We have assembled a varied and talented grouping of clerics here to heal, protect and enhance us. It is not wrong to try and protect oneself. We live in a dangerous time and we are on a dangerous mission, no question."

"But you mistake my words for condemnation or scorn, when in fact they were meant to be words of support and understanding. I know the decision you face, if not from the same stance. In the Seekers Mansion in Gateway a shield hangs on the wall in my room there. It was the shield of the first cleric of Hextor I slayed. His was magickal and the one I carried today is not. I kept my own shield with my coat of arms emblazoned on it when I could have used the new shield. In fact I commissioned a duplicate of that magickal shield and sold it for other supplies and living expenses, rather than give up the shield that has personal meaning to me."

"These items we use whether armor, steel, magick, they are not what keeps us alive. This is," Validar says as he points to his heart. "And they are." He points to each of the others around the room. "Do not take my words the wrong way. I saw the sadness in your eyes. I know fear tugs at your heart and creates this outburst. I was not judging you and there are many reasons for the choices we make. Each choice simply has a price."

"I will sleep on it and make my final decision in the morning." That said, she turns away from Validar to focus on considering her choice further.

"Treasure awards are hardly an exact science and as Sherwood pointed out before, will equal out in the long run if all are patient. My experience in the Seekers has borne this out as well."

"Your comment is true, althoug Lilia has the ability to fly as she proved in this past battle and this would give us three airborne ranged combatants if Sherra were to get the Boots of Levitation, including Sherwood in that list. By the same token, were Lilia to receive them, then that could save a spell for something else. Either option has its advantages and from the standpoint of the group as long as someone does not horde or hold an item when it could be used by another, then each will benefit us."

He (Grondar) pauses to consider for a moment. "If I'm not mistaken, Chareos has only received one item so far as well. While he didn't specify any particular preferences - rather leaving it to you to decide for him - it seems to me that he could benefit from the Ring as much as anyone. If a specific need arises, he could always lend it to someone else."

"You are correct, Chareos has also received only one item. However, if Corley is awarded the Girdle of Strength then perhaps Chareos could receive Corley's gauntlets. Or they could go to Laucian as an alternative."

"I feel the remaining choices are best left to Sherwood to decide and award, as I have made my suggestions known. My feelings on the subject are that each of us should receive an equitable item. If one is not equal to others, then another choice could be added. If someone receives something, but has to pass an item that is being replaced down, then there should be an extra item to replace that, as Ivy and Corley have received. It is not only what one gets, but how improved one is by the awards."
"Corley, for instance could receive 3 items from this award when others have only gotten one, but he will have given up two items of great value that he already possessed. This is not a gain of 3 items, but perhaps 1-1/2 at best. So all this must be taken into account as well."

"My current feeling is that most of us received an item of great value, except perhaps for Kylie, Grondar and Lilia. Grondar and Lilia received extra items and both are useful to each. Lilia has a useful item, but should likely receive one more item to make all roughly equivalent. Sherwood can make the final decisions regarding the rest."

"Meanwhile, Lord Acerion, may I speak with you in private for a short while?" If he agrees, then Validar will ask the newest Guardian of the Light to join him in a side room upstairs.

Lilia

Lilia:
Not quite sure what to say, Lilia will answer back in Elvish. "For a human, Lord Validar does have some good thoughts. The true enemy does not exist out here, but inside you. I have had extensive combat training as part of my upbringing that you lack. Conquering ones own personal fear is the greatest challenge you will face. No rational being wishes to die, but acting upon impulse and ones own fear is a quick way to be sent on to the next world."

"Both of our own styles in battle are similar, Kyle Lanthorn. In as such we both use our bows and magic from a distance. Thus we will always be away from the main action that others will be facing. Since we will be on the edge of any conflict, we should be safer then most in the group. There are several skilled warriors among us and several priests to heal wounds should the worse occur."

"Keep a clear head and you should emerge unscathed from most conflicts. Also remember that we watch each other back should the worst occur. As part of a group, you will never be along on the battlefield."
"Greetings to you, my Lady," Acerion will attempt to take Lilia's hand and kiss it as well.
Lilia does not offer her hand. She finds the ideal of a human slobbering on her hand a bit disgusting.

Lilia is intrigued by this notion and surprised that she didn't notice it before herself. "I would like to see these spells, if it is possible."

Lilia watches with interest Sherwood attempts to open the strange metal box. The item contained within, the Star Crown, does intrigue her. What is it? What does it do? Who is this Nylsara?

Lilia stoically watches as the items are handed out. At least at first.

Corley is given the plate armor and that is not a surprise. He is Lord Validar's best friend after all. Sherra receives the enchanted leather armor. In Lilia's estimation, only Sherra or Laucian should have received it, but since Laucian was given the longsword, it is only fitting that Sherra gets the armor.

In quick succession, the items that most interested Lilia are given to others. The dwarf gets the Boots of Speed and Kylie the Ring of Feather Falling. Ivy is given the bracers. Even worse she is given a second item before everyone has even received their first! What is going on here?

Not to be outdone, Corley is also given a second item as well. Funny only humans are being given second items before others even get their first.

Finally, Validar gets around to we lowly mages. Chareos is given the wand and I am handed the Talisman, perhaps the least desired of the items she asked for.

Adding insult to injury, Kylie is allowed her choice of the items remaining and before anyone else with only one items is allowed to make a selection, Corley is going to be awarded a third (THIRD!)item.

Having had enough of this farce, Lilia lets her feeling be known. "So, I see just how fair and unbiased this whole process is going to be. What a joke! All I see is to get what one wants is this group is to either be friends of or liked by Validar. Everyone else gets the crumbs that are left over. So be it. I will remember this insult."

Lilia will spin and depart the chamber. She will not accept any of the remaining items, mainly as anything she wished for was thoughtlessly given away to others, some as second items. Lilia will retire for the evening and has no desire to speak to anyone.

Sherwood:
"I am sorry," Grondar says, laying a hand on Sherwood's arm. "I sense sadness and regret in your words my friend. If you ever wish to discuss it, my door is always open to you."
"It was years ago, Grondar. But thank you for your concern."

"What of Sherwood's selection, In fairness he should receive or choose something."
"These items will do more good in the groups hands then in mine, Chareos. Thank you for your concern, Chareos, but while a few items do have interest, there is nothing here that I must have."

"No one is required to exchange items if they get something better. While it is a good practice, it is not a requirement. Some items do have great sentimental value and should not be parted with. Likewise items do tend to get destroyed frequently, so having back up gear is also desirable. Keep your mother's bracers Kylie and Sherra hold on to your old leather armor."

Sherwood gets distracted, as he frequently does, and finds several items given out while he was mentally away.
"I think that we moved too fast here and went beyond our initial discussions in this matter. You set the precedence by allowing Kylie to choose her second item, therefore it is only fair to allow all the others with only one item to select something before arbitrarily award anyone a third item."

"The difference between the girdle and gauntlets is not as great as may appear. They would only make Corley slightly more affective, but not much. The girdle could be used by anyone here, as opposed to the gauntlets as they would prohibit mages from employing spells with them on."

"That was certainly unpleasant, but not too surprising. Had we discussed it further, I would have recommended that the Talisman remain a group mage item. There is no special bonding process required to use it, so which ever mage had the most spells to memorize could have used it one night, and another the next."

"Regardless, the deed is done. Since Lilia does not wish any of what remains, my recommendations would be to give the Girdle to Chareos since when he does enter into combat it is hand to hand as opposed to ranged attacks, the Ring of Sustenance to Laucian as it is highly desireable to a ranger while traveling, and the Boots of Levitation to Sherra. The remaining daggers and darts can be taken by whoever desires them. I would also suggest that Lilia get first choice of items next time around to avoid a reoccurrence of this situation."

Kylie looks up at Sherwood, a note of surprise and delight in her eyes. "Really?! Could you?!" She pauses for a moment. "It would mean a lot to me to see my father again."
"Of course I can. I would not tease you about such a thing."
"Certainly."
"Alright. I'm ready."
"Very good." Sherwood will place one hand on the hilt of Lifeshield and place his other on Kylie's shoulder. Mentally, he will think to Lifeshield to teleport him to outside of Kylie's father's home down in Orlane. The sword complies and the two reappear there. Kylie rushes to see her father while Sherwood relaxes by leaning against a tree.

Sherwood casts Teleport this time and both he and Kylie returned to the designated arrival point in the tower. No picture is required as Sherwood has done this hundreds of times before. They arrive in a chamber on the top floor of the tower. Once Kylie is ready, Sherwood will escort her down to the second floor to protect her from the tower's defenses.
Laucian absently moves a piece of hair from his face and speaks, "When I was but a child the priest who raised me, Ivellios told me stories. One of the tales told of a race of elves would detest sunlight so much they made their home in the earth and rarely ventured forth from the abyss they embraced.

"We are getting a bit ahead of ourselves, my friends. We have yet to even ascertain that Nightmist is even an elf, let alone a drow. I only mentioned that that the name Nightmist did seem one an elf of certain clans might take, not that it truly was one. I could be a colorful name used by a human thief for all we know."
I do what is necessary.

VALIDAR -

Having had enough of this farce, Lilia lets her feeling be known. "So, I see just how fair and unbiased this whole process is going to be. What a joke! All I see is to get what one wants is this group is to either be friends of or liked by Validar. Everyone else gets the crumbs that are left over. So be it. I will remember this insult."

"What an odd behavior. Why did she wait until things moved along so far before saying something if she was unhappy and why did she indicate the Talisman second and yet be unhappy when she receives it." Validar watches the elf maid depart but certainly does nothing to stop her. Her own vanity and selfishness spoke loudly enough already.

"No one is indeed required to give up items they have, but it certainly changes the thought process that goes into the procedure in my estimation."

They would only make Corley slightly more effective, but not much. The girdle could be used by anyone here, as opposed to the gauntlets as they would prohibit mages from employing spells with them on."

"There are more pressing needs than spending all night huddled about the treasure gained and how it will be disbursed, I should think. You yourself said that it all works out in the long run, Sherwood. As for awarding a third item to Corley, it was neither arbitrary nor a sure thing. I made a suggestion, nothing more. Many assumptions were made here and I was moving this process along in the sake of efficiency. I shan't make that mistake again."

"If we want to turn this into a long, drawn out procedure, then perhaps I should keep out of the process entirely. Everyone may choose however they wish." Validar will not comment on the remaining of the treasure disbursal process.

"What he or she is or is not is currently irrelevant anyway. So speculation has no fault or prematurity. Unless we are very lucky I trust we will not know the answers until we were to seek out the spot on that map. I for one would like to learn what there is to be found in Elcadan first."

Acerion:

Lilia does not offer her hand. She finds the ideal of a human slobbering on her hand a bit disgusting.

Acerion will note that Lilia has no desire to offer her hand to him, so he respects her wishes. Instead he bows his head slightly and then looks up into her eyes. Lilia sees something in those piercing green eyes of his, a depth to them that she has never seen exist in any human's eyes she's ever seen. Something that makes her wonder if appearances are all they seem to be...

"Meanwhile, Lord Acerion, may I speak with you in private for a short while?" If he agrees, then Validar will ask the newest Guardian of the Light to join him in a side room upstairs.

"Of course, Lord Validar. Whenever you are ready," Acerion will reply and will follow him upstairs.

Corley:
"Aye, I have trained with the quarter staff for sometime now. Nor have I have the training with such weapons as you are comfortable with my friend. What you say is very true, if we were engaged in swordplay I believe it would be very different. But I have never been one to turn down a challenge. If you would like to do so in the future, with practice swords of course, I would welcome it." he says with a smile.
"I look forward to it, friend Chareos", Corley will eagerly state. "While my skill with them is not as great, I am capable of wielding the broad and longsword as well. No need to employ my greatsword for such training combat."
Kylie notes Corley's interest as she's drying off, and gives the big warrior a coy smile.
Corley will give a big goofy grin of his own.
She notes the large amount of her stew that he consumes, and nods when he thanks her for it. "You're most welcome, Lord Corley. A powerful man such as yourself needs to be well fed."
"I've always had a hearty appetite", Lord Corley will respond, really unsure on just what to say. "Good food is always a welcomed reward after a fine battle."
"Thank you so much, Lord Corley. My sisters will make great use of this. We will see to then needs of many with these gems."

In her gratitude, Ivy will give Corley a grateful kiss on the cheek.
"You are most welcomed, Lady Ivy", Corley states, a touch of embarrassment showing in his face.
Kylie is a bit mystified when Corley gives his money to Ivy, but it is his choice and he can do with his reward as he sees fit. The kiss he receives in return from the beautiful priestess causes her some consternation, and she stalks away unhappily.
Looking around Corley notes that Lady Kylie has departed, but is unsure why.

"Corley you will receive the Ring of Vampiric Regeneration for giving up your suit of armor. As one who battles with the fury that you do, this Ring should serve you well."
"Thank you, Lord Validar. It's magic will be most welcome."
"Well met, Lord Corley." Acerion will clasp wrists with the young Lord, giving him a firm embrace.
"May glory and honor be ours!", Corley will add with conviction.

Ivy:
"With more requests made known, we can proceed further with more of the magical treasure dispersal. Ivy will receive the new Bracers of Protection. If hers are better than others who employ them, then would you be so kind as to offer them? In addition for you sacrifice, you can have the Ring of Water Walking as well. The Bracers from the person who gets Ivy's magical bracers will be sold for travelling supplies and group money."
"My thanks, Lord Validar." Ivy will proceed to remove her own bracers and replace them with the better ones. "I will feel better being protected in battle." Discovering that Kylie will benefit from her old bracers, Ivy is happy to give them to the young half-elf.

A slight look of embarrassment comes to Ivy's face when she gets the ring as well. Someone has a peculiar sense of humor here. "Thank you once again."
"A pleasure, my Lady," Acerion will kiss her hand. "I am a Paladin following the teachings and wisdom of Heironeous. I was delayed in my leaving from Alexandria and was not able to join all of you at the original time as I had hoped."
"Most interesting", Ivy will agree. "I too am a Holy Warrior, but one of Azrella dedicated to the destruction of undead. I am pleased to have a follower of the Honorable Warrior among us."
"I was taught that the Negative Plane was where undead gather their strength from. It is the antithesis of the positive life force. Certain undead can steal away the life energy of others with their unlife touch. As gruesome as this is, it may also suggest a potential defense against the Blackfire. I now have access to a spell called Negative Plane Protection. It may serve as a protection against Blackfire. Unfortunately, there is no way to test my theory outside of direct confrontation with the cult itself."
"To be perfectly honest, Lord Validar, at no point was it indicated that items were supposed to be requested in any type of order. Indeed, my own selections were simply selected by running down the list, not by putting any weight to any of them. I personally am pleased with what I received, but if I had only received the least desired item and saw other desired items going to others as second choice items before I had even received a first, then I probably would not be pleased either."

"The process needs to be fair and unbiased and this did not seem to be. Everyone should be rewarded one item before anyone receives a second. While certain items in certain hands may seem ideal from a group point of view, do not forget that a group is always made up of individuals who may not think alike. This certainly seems to be a case of not everyone being on the same page as everyone else. Assumptions were made and some were not correct."

(I missed this before.)
Lilia is intrigued by this notion and surprised that she didn't notice it before herself. "I would like to see these spells, if it is possible."
"Certainly. They are occasionally useful spells. I also have a few other spells that would benefit the mages of the group. I will put them together for all to use."

Ivy - "I was taught that the Negative Plane was where undead gather their strength from.

"If what you say turns out to be true, then we will be much better protected against our enemies. As you say unfortunately, there can be no sure way to tell if we are successful, for the Blackflame struck me in this past battle and while the wound was stronger than normal due to Artur's magickal enhancements, the Blackflame itself did not affect me. That said, we would be wise to attempt this defense where possible."

"As you say, we do not all think alike. There are a number of things you say which I find near incredulous. While it is true that it was never expressly stated to make a list of the items in order of personal preference, why on earth would you not if it was known that choices were going to be made based on those preferences? If I asked you what you would like to eat and you said, perhaps some fresh fish cooked with exotic spices, roasted chicken, steamed cabbage or maybe hearty beef stew and then I brought you the steamed cabbage, would you have room to be upset when you really wanted the chicken? Why wouldn't you just say that? If one was so unconcerned about the process to not even bother to indicate a preference, then where is the unfairness if an item indicated is in fact chosen for you? I certainly expected the list to be in order, knowing that a choice would be based on that list."

"As for people receiving a second choice, that was only due to the fact at first that some items replaced others that were given, much like your own bracers. You did not get the full benefit of improvement that those bracers would bring, since you already had similar if weaker bracers. The same situation exists with Corley, who gave up an item immediately usable by another and therefore did not fully benefit from his award, as he would have if he did not have magickal armor."

"As for anyone receiving a second item before all received their first, I don't know what you're referring to. In truth you and Corley were given those secondary items for having given up items immediately useable by others in the party. In the same breath, Lilia and Chareos were made their awards. This was all one event in the planning stages and the order of statements is irrelevant. One thing happening did not affect the other, as it was decided simultaneously based on our conversations and the lists each indicated. If the big uproar is simply the order that items were stated then I suggest that certain members of the party find some maturity as it is much more important than any magickal affectation that we may discover."

"The important thing is the end result, not the manner or order of the recital. When all is complete then there is room to critique and criticize. When the choices are made by the leaders, there is no difference in how the spoken order goes. To think such is to not trust the process."

"Finally the idea that each person should be given one item and then move on has no bearing on the fact that we were chosing the best end result for the group. It is not a defining method, nor is it necessary for all to receive equal compensation. If we each went around a circle and chose an item out then yes, there should be one choice each, perhaps with items that are duplicated put back into the grouping for further selections. Some reward would be given to the one who placed the item back in, but then that creates all more sets of problems. If you do not pass items around then the party does not grow in total strength. This method only serves to make the process more individualized. We commited as a group to be a group and we agreed to the process of magick disbursement to be a group process. Then suddenly when the process doesn't take the exact form we expect, it smacks of unfairness. That statement is not valid nor logical."

"There was no bias in the awards. Had Lilia indicated that she had a PREFERENCE for some certain item then she likely would have gotten it. She received the second item she indicated. She would not have received the Boots of Speed as Grondar has a much more pressing need for them. She would not have received the Bracers that you now wear, Ivy of Azrella, as you do not fight at range, while she does and therefore you have more direct need of further protection. Sherwood completely agreed with these choices. She did not receive the Ring of Feather Fall although had she indicated such was her top choice, then she likely would have. The choices were made together. Had she indicated that the Girdle of Pouches was more desireable that would be hers. Furthermore, had Sherwood indicated his intentions regarding the Talisman when the process began rather than be occupied elsewhere, then Lilia may have been more placated. A misunderstanding, nothing more, and certainly not some plot to reward people I like better than others."

"Grondar and I have had many philosophical differences and even disagreements and yet he was the first I spoke words of an award to. Does that somehow make his choice the most important or the most desirable. No, he simply indicated an item as being desirable that was already likely to go to him if the choices were simply up to us. Once they agreed the award was made. Order is irrelevant. This is no biased conspiracy, just a process. And one that I grow tired of speaking about."

"My goal is to make this group better. Not to give preferential treatment to people I deem worthy and I consider such a comment to be low, simple and bordering on foolish. I desire to defeat our foes and strengthen our kingdom, and I want the most powerful group available to help me do that. As I said, I care not for the process and there are no truly fair methods of choosing anyway. Only in the long run does it all work out. I have seen this from direct experience. The process was more fair than any other that has been suggested. It will work out in the end." Validar will then excuse himself to speak with Lord Acerion.

Acerion:

"Most interesting", Ivy will agree. "I too am a Holy Warrior, but one of Azrella dedicated to the destruction of undead. I am pleased to have a follower of the Honorable Warrior among us."

"Indeed, most interesting," Acerion will reply at learning Ivy is also a paladin. "I would be most interested, when time allows, to speak with you about your beliefs and the wisdom of Azrella. Until now, I have not met another Holy Warrior, especially not a woman." Sensing that might be taken the wrong way, he adds, "Do not mistake my comment, for on the contrary, it shows your strength and convictions, for the road to obtaining paladinhood is not an easy one. I am truly honored." Acerion will show his sincerity in his eyes as he speaks those words to Ivy.

As Acerion waits for Validar, he listens closely to what he has to say regarding the distribution of the recently acquired magical items from the group's engagement at Twin Forks. Acerion has not been with the group long enough to know the motivations and reasonings of each member, but he can see the newness of the group. He realizes this is not the first issue the group has had as a whole, nor will it probably be the last. He does notice that there are differences of opinions, but that is good. Acerion notes Validar strives to straighten it out with everyone still present, and if only Lilia would have not stormed off, maybe the words would have reached her. Acerion sees there are several present who speak their mind, but he views that as a good thing too, for conversation keeps heads level and keeps people thinking. It is when no one speaks and only lets those thoughts boil in their bellies that problems begin to occur.

Chareos
He looks at the dwarf with concealed surprise, as he begins to barter for everyone within the group who he feels has been short-changed.

"If I'm not mistaken, Chareos has only received one item so far as well. While he didn't specify any particular preferences - rather leaving it to you to decide for him - it seems to me that he could benefit from the Ring as much as anyone. If a specific need arises, he could always lend it to someone else."

"You are not mistaken my dwarven friend. It is true that I too have only received one item." He considers for a moment before speaking choosing his words carefully not to make offense. "I spoke to Validar in private beforehand about my interests as well as among all of you. Validar believes that this method is best and I believe him. This is why I left it to both Sherwood's and Validar's decision."

Though several of the items do interest him greatly he wishes to have the items to be disbursed to those who would benefit from them the most.

"These items will do more good in the groups hands than in mine, Chareos. Thank you for your concern, Chareos, but while a few items do have interest, there is nothing here that I must have."

"It is a small matter Sherwood. I merely wish to be fair."

"That was certainly unpleasant, but not too surprising. Had we discussed it further, I would have recommended that the Talisman remain a group mage item. There is no special bonding process required to use it, so whichever mage had the most spells to memorize could have used it one night, and another the next."

Chareos looks at the departing form of Lilia and begins to think rapidly, then speaks. "Excuse me Sherwood. This still could be accomplished. I realize that this wand is of no mere enchantment and should be used wisely. If Lilia has interest in the wand, it could be possible to trade her for the talisman. Upon doing so I would place it with the communal to be used as you proposed. With the compensation of the girdle I do not mind doing so. What are your thoughts on this?"

"If the darts are of no ones interest I would like to make use of them. Seeing how we would sell such an item if no one claims it." He will reach into his pouch and take a few gold pieces from his pouch and place them before Validar or Sherwood whomever is closer."For our cause my friends."

He will gather the Girdle as Sherwood has stated and proceed to put it on over his robe.

Laucian

Laucian listens as Validar explains of a recent comrade in arms. One of this Mercy's parents was a drow. He can't help but wonder which one could it be. He tries to recall more information from the stories Ivellios had told him when he was young.

Laucian sits quietly as his clansmen stalks from the room. He can't help but wonder why she would think she would receive everything that her heart desired within such a group. Though he can see why she is upset given the fact some got 2 items before everyone got one.

"I tend to agree Ivy, although not full heartily. While the individual wants should be taken into consideration, we are still a unit. If we let the individual wants get in the way of the party's needs than we will have dire situation on our hands."

Laucian will gladly except the ring of sustenance and place it on his ring finger.

Validar -

Chareos looks at the departing form of Lilia and begins to think rapidly, then speaks. "Excuse me Sherwood. This still could be accomplished. I realize that this wand is of no mere enchantment and should be used wisely. If Lilia has interest in the wand, it could be possible to trade her for the talisman. Upon doing so I would place it with the communal to be used as you proposed. With the compensation of the girdle I do not mind doing so. What are your thoughts on this?"

Validar listens closely to the young mage's offer of sacrifice for his comrade at arms. As he has removed himself from the process, Validar says nothing specifically about the man's offer to help placate their offended partner's hurt feelings. "If we all approached the group as you did, friend Chareos, we would all be much better served. Your compassion and understanding make me proud to stand by you in this mission for the Crown." Validar will look to Sherwood and wait to see if the mage is more interested in placating the snobby elf at Chareos' expense or if maturity and honor are what is respected here.

Chareos - "If the darts are of no one's interest I would like to make use of them. Seeing how we would sell such an item if no one claims it." He will reach into his pouch and take a few gold pieces from his pouch and place them before Validar or Sherwood whomever is closer." For our cause my friends."

Validar will stop the young mage in his actions. "Put away your gold, my friend. Sherwood already stated that they are for the taking of whomever so desired. We do not buy magick items from the group and if we did I trust that even a dozen darts would fetch a fair price in the hundreds."
