Crucible #22 - "Day's End"
The Vigilant:
Edgar leads Frostbite and Blackout back to the others. As they walk along Frostbite questions the golden man:
"Edgar you said everyone is waiting for us. You mean everyone is okay? Where was Goldstar taken?"
"Everyone is in excellent physical condition. Goldstar was briefly taken to the center of my being so that she could link with me and serve as a base template for my avatars. That task complete, we returned to the chamber from which she was taken. I apologize if I caused you any alarm. Are you aware that your body radiates intense cold that could be harmful to others?"
Reaching the chamber with the rest of the team, the group is surprised to discover two Edgars! "How many are you?", Frostbite wonders aloud.
"I can assume as many different avatars as are necessary. I will scan the local area to gain additional templates so as the differentiate those dedicated avatars from each other. Have you any preferences for the forms that I take?"
Wishing to return to the mainland, Edgar shows the team a flat bottom platform in the small cave with the ocean opening. The group step onto the pad and surprisingly it doesn't roll underneath their feet like a regular boat might. It remains steady.
"How fast does it go and better yet will we fall off!?", Frostbite asks.
"A trip to the shore will take you approximately two minutes so as to not be suspiciously fast. The platform will hold you in place. You will not fall off. I await your return."
With that, the platform slowly begins to accelerate out of the cave and into North San Diego Bay. Looking closely, you realize that the platform actually floats just a few inches above the water. A small force is exerted by the platform that holds everyone in place. This force can be overcome should anyone desire to do so. The ride is extremely smooth and no one has any trouble staying in place.
The platform reaches the docks about two minutes later. It slows to a stop and pulls up next to a landing. Stepping up on the dock and you're back on land. The platform remains there, awaiting your return.
Night has fallen as the Vigilant step back on the mainland. The dock area is extremely busy and what looks like a command post has been set up in this area. Chaotic is the best way to describe the area. PRIMUS operatives, paramedics, firemen, and police can be seen. Many are heading to a particularly large tent. The aroma of food can be picked coming from the same tent and the group heads towards it.
An emergency rest station has been set up inside the tent. Food and drink are offered on several tables. Plastic chairs sit around numerous round tables inside the tent. There is very little conversation inside the tent. Several televisions have been set up and most everyone is watching these. Several people are taking naps.
The food available is just as make shift as the tent itself and is being brought in from various fast food establishments. The food includes varieties of pizza, subs, chicken wings, burgers, fries, tacos, and soft drinks.
Gathering up what you wish to eat, the group selects an empty table and sits down. A television is close by and it is reporting on the days events.
Lily:
After playing with her powers, Lily unwinds and flicks on the evening news. Each of the local stations is running special reports about the crisis. It's hard to avoid the news coverage!
Unconfirmed reports state that the trouble started when a flying saucer landed at the intersection of Broadway and 1st Avenue. It used some type of weapon to open a rift in the sky. There was an explosion and a wave of white energy shot out in all directions.
The affect of the white wave was dramatic and wide spread. Many people simply perished from the contact while others were changed in a variety of fantastic ways. Still others were seemingly unaffected by the wave of change. Sadly, the known death toll has now topped 2000 people.
Other reports go on to state that strange beings and buildings appeared for a very short time but disappeared once more. Even dinosaurs were spotted! The PRIMUS operative known as Gargoyle has seemingly disappeared.
The Protectors from San Francisco have arrived to lend aid. The hero team includes: Doc Sonic, Brainstorm, Dr. Wraithe, Maelstrom, Helios, Quasar, Marksman, Renegade, and Silverfist. They arrived in their jet, the Sky Cruiser, about half an hour ago. Other reports suggest that a medical team from Sanctuary will be arriving within the next day or two from that south pacific island.
Reports and updates fly fast and furious. Here are some of the highlights.
Several buildings have collapsed. Emergency workers are trying to dig out any survivors.
There are widespread fires. Several are believed to have been started by a man who alternates between being on fire and covered in ice.
Other unknown superbeings have been spotted in the city performing a variety of criminal acts. These include a cat-like woman, another woman who can control the winds, and a black woman who appears to be superstrong among many others. The reporters warn that anyone not connected to the relief efforts stay away from Downtown San Diego for their own protection.

The City of Wonders and Terrors
Eldrich Arcane:
Eldrich turns to Edgar handing him a serpentine ring.
"Edgar, as a higher being I feel I can intrust this evil item to your keeping. Until I can determine how best to destroy it harmlessly it must be kept away from contact with others. I do not believe it can harm you so secure it in an unreachable manner for me."
Eldrich boards the floating platform with interest seeking the magic that propels it.
But of course there is none. Magic is a weaker force here and in truth neither Edgar nor the inhabitants of this realm seem to suffer from the lack.
The platform appears simple but moves effeciently over the great expanse of water while holding its passangers secure with gentle force.
The platform coasts to a stop against a wooden dock and Eldrich steps off with the others looking in all directions at the activity going on.
The group enters a large tent filled with diverse peoples and foods, chairs and tables made of unfathomable materials, and square boxes with glass fronts dipicting events from various parts of this afflicted city.
Eldrich does not know the foodstuffs he sees but assumes it is edible elsewise it would not smell so good. He will choose some of everything so as not to inadvertantly offend the unknown hosts and take a seat with the others.
The glass on the boxes detail many terrors; Collapse of great buildings and uncontrolled fires, a man of fire and ice, a woman with dominance of air, another with perhaps the dominance of earth. Eldrich eats what is before him while taking careful note of the uniform garb of the city's servants and defenders. It would not do to make a mistake later.

Have to stop those crazy paras first. The longer they rampage unchecked the more damage they do to the city and themselves.
Flux watches the reports for an idea of locations to head for while wondering how Miss Pak and Rose are doing.....

Blackout remains quiet during the short trek across the water. He does so only to resist the urge to spout off as a pirate captain with a minaturized Flux "parrot" on his shoulder. The smell of the food is overwhelming and Blackout grabs a handful of tacos and burritos and makes his way over to where the group's table is secured. Glad I made this mask the way it is so I don't have to remove it to eat.
Blackout won't look at any of the televisions while he eats, but will definitely listen to what they are reporting. After finishing a very satisfying meal (being extremely hungry can make almost any meal satisfying), he will see what Flux has to say about which priorities we should set out upon.

Lily:
Having been there at the time, much of the news report doesn't surprise Lily. She watches, feeling a bit numb at all the suffering shown on the news report. She had known that many had died or been injured, but hadn't been aware of the full measure of this tragedy. Tears well in her eyes, and begin to slowly trace twin tracks down her face.
The arrival of the Protectors is of interest to Lily, and the predicted medical team from Sanctuary even moreso. If she cannot find a convenient way to make it to the island, perhaps this will prove and opportunity to at least get the medical checkups they need.
A wave of guilt sweeps over Lily at the mention of the two metahuman women she had seen and been unable to do anything about. Though she accepts that Rose's needs had to come first, still she feels she should have done more - though she cannot think what.
Lily is surprised that there is no mention of her new friends, the Vigilant. Hopefully, they are well and helping with this disaster.

Happy that everyone is back together, Goldstar follows the others to Edgar's boat. She doesn't wish to offend her new friend, so Goldstar will ride along with the others. She'll stand near Frostbite since she can't be harmed by his coldness and the others can.
A thought does cross Goldstar's mind. Since she can do things a star can do, can she radiate heat as well? That may help offset Frostbite's chilly aura.
One back on land, Goldstar will follow the others since she's unsure just what to do by herself. They seem to want to relax and eat, so Goldstar will just tag along. She consciously avoids picking up anything to eat and will just sit with the others. Probably near Frostbite since she can withstand it.

The Knight listens intently as Flux speaks of us re-entering the city and splitting off into groups of three. Once we do split off, Serena will use her limited magic to make herself immune to Frostbites freezing temperatures.
The Knight will accept Flux's coinage of the realm. Much to her surprise it is only some type of paper and not metallic coins. How peculiar. (You gotta love a man who willingly gives women money!)
If Serena is surprised at just how smooth the boat ride is, she does not show it. In her mind its just another type of magic and leaves it at that.
Once on shore, the Knight will follow the others to the source of the pleasant smell of food. Most of the food is unknown to Serena. She can recognize the smell of cooked chicken, but is unsure of the form. Nonetheless she will take a handful of these chicken wings. Likewise the other fare will be sampled.
Coming to the soda dispensing machine, Serena is unsure just how to work the device and seems at a loss. Moving closer Serena will say, "Beverage please."
Once seated with the others, Serena will eat hardily and keep her eyes on the strange scrying devices. It is remarkable how they can show such lifelike images! And the duration of the scrying spells is most impressive! Even more impressive, the scrying devices are looking backwards in time to past events as Serena sees herself and others in the images! Amazing! This is a most impressive and powerful form of magic!
As the fine and most unusual meal comes to a close, Serena will say, "Based on the images displayed in yon crystal boxes there is much work left to be done. It seems to me the best way to lend aid is to help those unfortunates trapped in the rubble of the collapsed edifice and assist in extinguishing the blazes, if we are able."

No mention of 'demons' or any sign of Green Steel either. Hope nothing happened to him while he was dealing with Red.

"The beings displayed in the scrying box are familiar in my eyes. Most of them were in the area when I first arrived on this world in the strange metal coffin. The man who is engulfed in fire at one moment and covered in ice the next was there. He seemed surprised at his transformation and not at all in control of his himself. He was defeated in battle and appeared to be changed back to normal by the demon known as Yu. However, if he has reverted then perhaps the demon's touch was not permanent. If he has become a blazed once more, then he acts with out conscious thought and lashes out like a wounded beast."
"The feline warrior is as savage as her animal cousins. She did slay some strangely garbed men with her claws. The one who commands the air acts with her as if they are united in their cause of destruction. Both were fought in righteous battle and forced to retreat from the field of honor. The Major known as Star assisted in all of these conflicts, along with Goldstar and the demon Yu and his furry lizard companion."
"The dark skinned woman is unknown to me."
Serena doesn't quite grasp that train of thought, but decides not to press the point about helping out with the fires. "Does one require special training to assist in digging up survivors of a collapsed structure? It seems to me that our abilities would make it much easier and in turn save lives that otherwise might be lost.""Firefighting takes specialized training, Serena. Frosty listens as The gold skinned man explains why it took Goldstar. He is relieved that his friend was returned unharmed.
" You had me worried for a while there. There is no need to apologize nothing bad became of the situation. Just do me a favor,"he says with a smile,"Please ask for help rather than just abducting someone in the future."
The teenager looks at Edgar is surprise. "I knew I had a chilling/sticking
affect for those who come near me. Your pervious "tenant" found this out first hand. I will keep that it in mind when I'm around the others."
Edgar soon reveals that he can take many forms as he needs. Talk about being in multiple places at once. Wish I could do this for work he thinks to himself. "To each his or her own, If you would like I can bring back magazines that you could look at and decide on forms you could take, though don't pick any actresses or anything like that, would be hard to explain what they are doing here.
He steps on the platform,reverting back to human form as he does,with the others and looks around for a motor. He quickly doesn't find any. He makes a note to Edgar to ask how it propels itself. The platform soon begins to move. Most surprisingly he doesn't feel the waves beneath his feet and a strange force seems to be holding them in place.
They reach the docks to find a lot of activity. Paramedics,firemen, police and Primus agents are seen coming and going from a large tent.
Invisible fumes reach his nose as they walk closer. "I could eat a horse." he says out loud.
He walks in,again in human form, grabs a Italian sub and drink and heads to a table where the others are. He quickly inhales his food ad he watches the tv screens.
Sadly the death toll his reach 2000 and seems to have no intention of leveling off.
"Dinosaurs! How in the world?"
The reports soon turn toward metahumans that are causing chaos in the area. He makes mental notes of the powers they possess and begins thinking of ways to deal with them in turn.
When he is done drinking his soda he will lean back in his chair. " Oh that hit the spot! Feel like I haven't eaten all day."
"Those fires are intense. I say we deal with The Hot/cold head who is causing these apparent fires once we do so the Firemen can try to control the fire. And if needed I could lend them a hand.

Just as she reaches for the remote to turn the TV off, Lily is surprised as a report comes on concerning the castle in the bay. Though her new friends are neither interviewed nor mentioned by name, Lily recognises them. The Vigilant depart the Disaster Relief tent and go forth to render aid. Goldstar flies off carrying Serena and Frostbite, while Flux, Eldrich, and Blackout go forth together. Serena uses her minor magical abilities to enable her to endure Frostbite's close proximity. The others go forth on foot.
The next several hours pass with the heroes offering humanitarian aid. None of the troublesome supers from the television reports are spotted, but there are plenty of other tasks to be performed. Locating victims, rescuing people from the fires, securing the area from looting, clearing the streets from rubble, and so on.
Members of the Protectors were spotted during the night, but much like yourselves, they were too busy helping out to stop and converse.

Goldstar happily goes forth to pitch in. The golden-skinned woman rescues people trapped in the upper floors from fires and carries back down to safety. Switching into Neutron Star form, Goldstar lends her strength where it is needed.
The hours just seem to breeze by and before Goldstar is even aware of it, the night draws to a close. It seems all the fires have been put out and there really isn't much else to do.
Much to Goldstar's surprise, everyone else seems tired and exhausted. How strange!
"Well, I guess I'll go back to the castle then. Maybe Edgar will be able to tell me if an emergency comes up during the night or something. I guess I'll see everyone else later then. Bye!"

Blackout will investigate each situation as we come upon it, focusing his senses to figure out how many people may be trapped or in other need of assistance. He will pick his way in and around the debris and be careful not to cause additional damage or collapse. As people are found, he will ask for Flux's aid if needed to move stubborn, or just plain extremely heavy, rubble.
Finally returning to the aid station after we have done all that we possibly can for one day, Blackout will be nearly asleep on his feet. As the topic of returning to the castle is brought up, Blackout will reply, "I do not have much to return to, and I can always gather up my personal things once all of this calms down some. I'll go back to the castle tonight."
With that said, Blackout will wait for the others and hope that basic neccessities will be waiting, although even sleeping upon a stone floor seems inviting right now.

Unbelieveable! So much blood-metal, so readily available. Just as well magic is a weak force here. That much blood-metal would disrupt any long term magic or sunder it completely. If there were any doubts about my displacement they would now be dispelled. No fragment holds such a resource.
For Eldrich, the sun returns far quicker than he expected even for the harvest season. And sometime during the night he saw a sight that would have panicked him had he seen it sooner.
A large fragment, seemingly very close to this one, with either seas or large lakes on it, in plain view to everyone who might look up. No one seems to notice or care.

By the time daylight hits Flux is well into tired mode and wants to soak his aching knees in hot water, take aspirin and go to bed.
Getting too old for all nighters sarge.
Back at the tent Flux greets the returning Vigilant.
"Good work everyone. Get some rest now. We come back to it this afternoon when the Sanctuary contingent arrives on the island"

Back at the first aid area he will ask on of the others to grab him a really hot coffee. When it comes time to make a choice whether to go to the castle or to the house. He will choose to go to his house.
" I'm going to head home for the night. Ill head to the castle after work and catch up with the rest of you." noting that they dont have a meeting place to get the castle he will point this out to Flux. Where are we gonna met in order to get back to the castle?"

Vigilant:
Reunited back at the first aid station, the group calls it a night. Flux and Frostbite begin the journey home, while the others return the island castle. Retracing their steps back to the dock, the group is mildly surprised to find that the platform is not there! However, as they reach the edge of the dock the platform reappears on the water as if it had been concealed and your presence caused it to appear.
The trip back to the castle is much like the earlier voyage. It takes about two minutes and is perfectly smooth.
As you draw closer to the castle, you will note that is much better illuminated then it was earlier in the day. Modern lighting has been added to the exterior of the castle in addition to the spotlight on top.
The platform pulls into the dock that it departed from earlier. Even this seems different. The stonework is not as rough as it had been before. The crude workmanship of the primitive castle as been jazzed up. There are now proper steps leading down the arrival point for the platform.
Edgar is standing there awaiting your arrival. However, it is not exactly the same Edgar as you recall. While he has the same basic facial appearance, Edgar's skin has taken on a more traditional pinkish tone and his clothes remind you of a proper English butler.
"I am pleased that you have returned. My scans indicated that my earlier incarnation was somewhat out of place here in San Diego, California, United States of America, so I adjusted to something that would blend in better as Frostbite suggested to me earlier."
"I have installed a spotlight and updated the a modern electrical system as Flux prescribed. I have yet started to shape the lower levels for your private and personal use. Inform me of which you desire down there and I will try to accommodate. Also please let me know what other type of avatars would be desirable."
"I sense that some of you are in need of rest. Temporary quarters are ready for use on the second and third level of the castle. I shall escort you there immediately."

Wearily, Serena makes her way back to the dock where the platform is waiting. Or rather was waiting as it now appears to be gone. Too tired to really give the matter serious thought, Serena starts to say something just as the platform appears.
"Convenient", the Knight mutters and then steps on the platform.
The trip, while not actually any longer than before, seems longer due to just how tired Serena feels. It's been a long time since she pushed herself this hard.
Finally, the platform returns to the castle and Edgar is waiting for us. At least she thought it was Edgar at first, but now he looks different. The castle itself looks different too. The bright light is now at the highest point and the lighting inside, while much brighter than before, is not normal either.
Serena isn't quite sure what a modern electrical system is, but since Flux requested it, it must be desirable. "As for what chambers to add, a meeting area would be good, along with training facilities and beings to engage in mock combat. Oh, you should send the platform back to the docks so that Flux and Frostbite can return to the castle later on this day. Places to eat and sleep would be good too."
Serena herself will take one of the smaller rooms. She's never been one for creature comforts. After saying her goodnights, Serena will go rest. After removing her armor and carefully storing it, Serena will climb into bed and quickly drifts off asleep.

He quickly says goodnight to the others and departs. He will look for a safe area to change back to human form and begin to walk/run home as fast as his tired feet will carry him. As he runs he wonders about the new group and the challenges they will face in the future.
As his house comes into sight he breaths a sigh of relief as he is finally home and the warm bed that awaits him. As he walks into the house his father is standing there with a worried look.
He quickly dismisses his father's worries " Im alright Dad." and head to bed he doesn't remember even touching the pillow as he drifts off to a much needed sleep.
He quickly says goodnight to the others and departs. He will look for a safe area to change back to human form and begin to walk/run home as fast as his tired feet will carry him. As he runs he wonders about the new group and the challenges they will face in the future.

Goldstar will say goodbye to her friends before go back to the castle with the others. It appears that Edgar has been doing some reorganizing while we were gone. Modern lighting, a modern electrical system, and spotlight are now on the castle. Even Edgar looks different!
"Looks good so far, Edgar! I don't need to rest or eat, so quarters are not that big of a deal. Actually, I'm nor really sure what to do with myself at this moment!"
