New Frontiers #14
The Guardians of the Light have been formed in Lothar's house in Twin Forks. The basic groundwork has been laid, but a few matters remain unresolved.
The group splits up to deal with a few personal tasks before retiring after the long evening.
Sherwood and Validar go forth to speak to the town officials before departing for Pyris with Lothar in tow.
Corley, Kylie, and Po secure the supply depot and warehouse used by Lothar. Later they are relieved by the town guard so that they can get some rest.
Sherra and Laucian return from inspecting Lothar's barge. They discover a small stockpile of gold bars along with a strange metallic chest. An elegant elfin script graces the top of the chest, but is incomprehensible to anyone present.
Sherwood makes arrangements for everyone to stay at the Twin Forks Inn to rest and recuperate. The Twin Forks Inn is functional, but lacks the warmth of the Green Forest Inn. Guests are infrequent in Twin Forks, so the accommodations are not as nice.
Those wishing to inspect the room used by Artur and Arkane may do so. In fact, it will be necessary as those rooms need to be reallocated for Guardians use. The two men's chambers are spartan to say the least. Apparently they carried all their belongings with them and left nothing behind.
The rooms used by their guards are more cluttered, but offer nothing in the way of new information.
Eventually everyone lays down to rest, rising later that afternoon. Lunch and dinner will be available at the Inn, for those who wish to partake of it. Lothar's cupboards were rather bare when it comes to preparing a meal for such a large group of people.

Fun in Pyris
Meanwhile up in Pyris, Validar and Sherwood see to their own tasks. Sherwood speaks at great length with Jallarzi before seeking out Validar to return to Twin Forks.
Elsewhere, Validar discusses matters with his parents.
Later still, Validar speaks to his father in private. Baron Relon is feeling much better and even looks heartier then he was just a few days ago. He is very surprised to learn of Lord Cavius' involvement in this plot.
"That just doesn't make any sense, Validar. Cavius and I adventured together many years ago. We saved each others life countless times. I find it hard to believe that he would betray me like this. Unless what they tried to do to me has already been done to Cavius."
"At any rate, proceed with caution, Validar", Baron Relon will advise. "Lord Cavius may not be a willing participant in this plot."
The Baron will be visibly shocked at the returned presence of the Cult of the Blackflame. "Our forefathers thought them destroyed decades ago. The Swords of Cynalon did lay waste to the cult and retrieved the Crown Prince before harm could befall him. Alas, Princess Theandra was not as fortunate. No one ever did find out what happened to her."
"As I recall, the Swords of Cynalon did number eight regular members. My grandfather Validar and his brother Valerian, along with the mage James the Red. The others I cannot clearly recall. I believe that the Lady Sallavarian also had an ancestor in the group, in addition to her relation to James the Red. Perhaps she can recall some of the missing details."
Elsewhere, Validar discusses matters with his parents.
"Such seems often to be the way of things", Baroness Lysandra agrees. "I am confident that you will unravel this web of intrigue and arrive at the true culprits.""Our mission was successful, my mother. However, I would not call it a success as yet. One mystery has only led to the opening of two more."
"Very good, my son.""The man who delivered the poisoned wine has been turned over to our guards for punishment. Lothar was a bandit who haunted the High Road between Timberline and Elcadan. There should be a time of reduced attacks on caravans and travelers, at least until another moves in to take his place."
The Baroness will seem slightly surprised by this revelation. "I wish you would have discussed this matter with your father and I, but the deed seems to be done. Select the men you wish to travel to Twin Forks to aid you in this task.""We have taken steps to secure Twin Forks in Elcadan territory and Pyris will be having a much larger stake in that town's business endeavors. I also will need a small garrison to protect our interests there."
"We have recovered some of the treasure that was taken by Lothar recently and are using this to support the plan in Twin Forks and I have funds to contribute to the furthering of defenses at Timberline. I fear Elcadan may not be pleased with me when as my plans progress and I will be contributing regularly to the defense of our borders and preparing for the expansion of them."
"This is most troubling indeed. Lord Cavius has always been a staunch alley to Pyris. I cannot imagine why he would be involved in this foul affair of his own accord.""Finally, to tell of the continuation of my mission. We will not be staying long, Sherwood and I. Our discoveries have led us to next search out the lands of Lord Cavius in Rennydale. Surprising though it may seem, the bandit claimed, under magical interrogation, that he had nothing to do with the shipment itself and that Cavius simply hired the bandit to ensure that the shipment would arrive safely."
"Therefore, the source of this poison is in Rennydale, or was at the time. Sherwood had agents working and investigating Lord Cavius and we will be leaving for there tomorrow. I will not stop until I take my revenge upon the culprit who committed this low and base attack on our family."

Back to Twin Forks
After Sherwood and Validar return from Pyris, Grondar casts Speak with Dead on Artur's remains. The spell is cast and the pair wait for Artur's spirit to come forth. Long moments pass and there is no response. The minutes drag by and Grondar realizes that the spell duration has long passed. There was no response from Artur's spirit.
Kylie commits Comprehend Languages and Read Magic to memory. She casts Comprehend Languages and the writing the chest begins to move and twist in her eyes. The lettering moves of its own accord, changing into something she can understand. The message is short, simple, and comprised of four words.
The message on the chest reads: "A gift to Nylsara".
Laucian leads the questioning of Artur and Arkane's men, assisted by Grondar and possibly others. The men are very willing to talk and are somewhat puzzled as to why they were jailed.
The surviving men's names are Rebban, Bermon, and Semual. They, along with the fourth man that Corley slew, were all hired at the same time. The men hail from Corunglain and that is where they were hired to work as bodyguards by Arkane and Artur. The men will admit they are unsure why they needed bodyguards, as they were both easily more skilled than the guards were.
The band was attacked by wolves on the way down and they were driven off before any of the bodyguards could contribute to the battle.
Artur and Arkane arrived in Corunglain coming in from the north through the Broken Lands. They were hired to act as bodyguards for the journey to the south. From Corunglain, they traveled south to Elcadan. They stayed at the High Road Inn for several days, while Artur and Arkane attended to personal matters in town. They don't know who they saw or where they went as none of the men were present.
Four days ago, they arrived in Twin Forks from Elcadan, by way of Hendry. They were put in the Twin Forks Inn while Artur and Arkane dealt with someone they called Lothar. Again, neither man spoke to the hirelings as to the purpose of their actions. Both Artur and Arkane seemed very nervous and were always ready to move on at a moment's notice. The men thought they were somewhat eccentric, but the pay was good.
None of them have never heard of the Cult of the Blackflame and were just as shocked as anyone when they burst into blackfire.
Speaking with the Innkeeper, a man named Julen, reveals very little. The guests arrived four days ago and have mostly kept to themselves. The leaders of the band have spoken with Lothar, a retired merchant who lives in the area, on several occasions. It is believed that harsh words were exchanged and that Lothar was visibly shaken by this. Beyond that Julen is as much in the dark as anyone.

GM Notes
GM Notes:
That should be enough to keep everyone going.
Adventuring Bands - This side of the kingdom is more relaxed in their use of adventuring bands as compared to Gateway. The Crown sponsors very few missions here, so the regulations are not as strict. Still it is a good idea to pick a name to be identified as.
Kylie could have memorized two Identify spells. Which items does she wish to try them out on?
I'd like to wrap up the stay in Twin Forks this post, with the trek to Sherwood's tower coming up in the next one.
Now what?

Grondar:
From before:
Current:
A good night's sleep and a light meal in the inn's dining room leaves Grondar feeling refreshed. As usual, he spends some time in devotions after rising, and asks Berronar's blessings on his activities for the day.
Grondar feels some apprehension as he approaches the task of speaking with Artur's spirit. He has never done such a thing previously, and he feels disquiet at the thought of extending into the realm of the dead. Far too much like necromancy for his taste.
The time comes and the dwarven priest joins Sherwood for the ritual. Preparing carefully, Grondar calls upon Berronar's aid and bends her power to the task. Leaning back a bit, he waits for Artur's spirit to respond to the summons. And waits, and waits. Minutes tick by, and Grondar looks over at Sherwood with a questioning look in his eyes.
"What can have gone wrong? Did I perform the ritual incorrectly? It seems I was unequal to the task." A sense of disappointment at his own performance tinges Grondar's words.
Later in the day, Grondar joins Laucian to question the guards hired by Artur and Arkane. Fortunately, this task proves more successful than the earlier one. As the question the men, Grondar uses his talent for detecting truth to verify the veracity of the answers they receive.
It is interesting that the men are from Corunglain, not far from Rennydale, where so much of the current mystery seems centered. Grondar will be sure to query the men concerning any possible knowledge relating to the poisoned casks of wine.
Of greater interest is the revelation that Artur and Arkane came down from the Broken Lands or beyond. Grondar knows little of the region, but what he has heard is nearly all bad. That they visited Elcadan is not really surprising, considering what Kylie and Ivy have told him of that wicked city. It would seem to imply that there may be other members of the Cult in the capital.
Based on what the innkeeper reveals, Grondar will attempt to find out if any of the three questioned men know anything of what was argued about.
From before:
"I hear the anger and judgement in your words, my friend. The simple fact is that I believe that anything is possible. Based on my own beliefs and the teachings of the Revered Mother, if I err, I would rather do so on the side of mercy.""Your ideals are amazing. I do not pity your enemies, Grondar, for they have already been given more chances at redemption than they deserve. I am not so good and forgiving that I can allow one possible choice at the exact right time to suddenly make up for a life of criminal activities, banditry, murder and thuggery. I would not worry if our judges were to throw yhose lives away. Clearly they already have thrown their own lives away."
"Then that is what I shall do, friend elf. Hopefully, we can learn much from those men.""Your presence would be greatly appreciated in this matter Grondar."
"I, too, consider it a pity. He claimed to believe that Validar would slay him as soon as his usefulness was done. While Validar is a harsh man, the example of Po proves that his concerns were unfounded."Laucian begins to wonder the decisions of Saladin. We give this man a chance to turn his life around and he throws it in our faces. His reasons must have been many to do so. He shakes his head at this news "This is most unpleasant indeed. It is a pity that he choose that path rather than the one we had hoped he would. At least Po made the choice to stand with us."
"That is good to hear Master Sherwood. While I know little of you personally, I am heartened by your words, for they show wisdom and a spirit of caring for others that reflects well on you.""Only time will tell if your words ring true, Grondar of Berronar. However, I would never knowingly set adventurers on a task that I knew they were overwhelmed by. I may test groups and individuals to gauge their reactions, but I try to avoid hopeless struggles as much as possible. I will be there should such a battle be fought."

Kylie:
From Before:
Current:
Last action before retiring for the night, Kylie will search the rooms of Artur and Arkane carefully. She pays special attention to any possible locations for hidden compartments, within the walls, floor and ceiling of the room, as well as the furniture itself. If Sherra chooses to assist, Kylie will let her do most of the work, so she can focus on preparing for the long day ahead.
Between the castings of her Identify spells, Kylie uses a Comprehend Languages to read the script on the box. Finding that she can read it with the spell's aid, proves less helpful than she might have hoped. When all are gathered later in the day, Kylie will describe what she found. "Does the name Nylsara mean anything to anyone?" she asks.
__________________________________________________
First casting of Identify will be on the leather armor, the two swords and the mace. For the second casting, Kylie will focus on the 3 rings and the wand.
From Before:
Kylie gestures dismissively. "Like I said, I don't think it really matters. If you wish to set up some order for choosing such as alphabetically by name or whatever, that's fine with me.""Personally I do not choose to put my fate in the hands of chance and random events nor upon the indeterminable whims of a being not of this world. Even for something as inauspicious as this matter of distributing treasure. Is it possible for us to be a bit more organized?"
"That is certainly a possibility; we shall have to see. I suspect it unlikely, though. I think it more likely that they might have hidden something in one of their rooms which careful searching might turn up.""I thank you for your assistance, both of you. I am hoping that they heard the fight with Lothar and rush to his aid, in doing so not securing information that may be useful to us."
Kylie smiles. "You're a good man, Lord Corley." She doesn't seem inclined to elaborate."Perhaps not, good lady, but a proper gentleman will always be polite to the fairer gender until proven they are not worthy of such accolades. You have done nothing in my eyes to make me think otherwise, Lady Kylie."
"I hope you live to find all you seek." Who knows, perhaps she may have something to do with that..."Interesting? Perhaps to someone unfamiliar with it perhaps, but to me this is adventure is far more interesting. The time for training and being tutor has finally past. Now comes the opportunity to prove my worth to my family, my friends, and my liege. What more could a warrior ask for? Other than the love of a good woman, of course, and fine food and drink."
"Don't let it trouble you, Corley. There is good sense in that. I'm sure that I can find someone to instruct me in the finer points of this weapon - though perhaps not one so handsome..." She departs with a jaunty flip of her short-cropped hair."You are most welcome, Lady Kylie. My only regret is that I could not instruct you further. Alas, my size and strength suggest the use of a much larger weapons to do battle."
Feeling a bit uncomfortable with her own behavior, Kylie steps back quickly. "Uhm... Maybe. I don't know." The mage's words bear some ring of truth. Many here have shown her some measure of friendship, and Kylie is enjoying the opportunity to get to know those who share her mother's heritage. It is a side of her life that has been missing until now."In some ways I can understand what you are going through. The path we wish to walk and the one fate casts us upon are not always the same. I do know this, Kylie Lanthorn. You are a strong willed woman and can endure what lies before us. You survived Dog Alley and anything else this world has to throw at you will pale in comparison. Know this as well; as part of this band you will never be alone."
"Oh. Of course. You're right. I'm afraid I was just caught up in the excitement of the moment." Her eyes twinkle merrily."We all have much to learn and study from these tomes. Take your time, I have much to review as well."

VALIDAR -
"Personally I do not choose to put my fate in the hands of chance and random events nor upon the indeterminable whims of a being not of this world. Even for something as inauspicious as this matter of distributing treasure. Is it possible for us to be a bit more organized?"
Kylie gestures dismissively. "Like I said, I don't think it really matters. If you wish to set up some order for choosing such as alphabetically by name or whatever, that's fine with me."
"We have some time to resolve the dispersement. Once we are at Sherwood's tower, we can complete this matter." Validar thinks it odd that young Kylie is so determined to feel as though she has a direct choice, but has no care for the method. The procedure that the Seekers followed was sufficient and didn't so much resemble a game. Validar tries to remember that he is dealing with new individuals here.

"I can be merciful when the time comes and I can be harsh when need be, my dwarven friend. The bandits have received a more lenient sentence than was required by law. If I err, I would rather err on the side of the safety of my people, who are good and kind. I cannot bring myself to champion the cause of redeemed evil in the hopes that it will be successful. It is my goal to be cartain that innocents will not further suffer when that redemption fails."

Laucian begins to wonder the decisions of Saladin. We give this man a chance to turn his life around and he throws it in our faces. His reasons must have been many to do so. "I thank you for the compliment, albeit a bit upside-down. It is a harsh world and our kingdom is beset by harsh enemies and calamities. only do what I can to turn the Kingdom towards the better."

In Pyris:
"Thank you for the vote of confidence, mother. Our band is on the trail of the enemy and we shall root them out. Hopefully I will be able to return again to Pyris soon, but I cannot be certain how long this mission will last."
When the Baroness speaks of her surprise at the beginnings of Validar's plans, Validar is somewhat surprised himself.
"You know, mother, that while I am not yet the Baron, I am still an ambassadore of this land. My actions and that of our adventuring band will no doubt raise the ire of Elcadan's nobles and merchant guilds and it is best to be prepared to counter any actions those lowly slugs shall take."
"The Baron has often talked about the evil that seeps from Elcadans borders. Why else do we so diligently patrol the woods to the West? We all know the banditry is sponsored by Elcandan to further their ends. Father has often spoke of one day throwing off the heavy shadow of Elcadan. They dog our negotiations with other nobles due to their size. Their merchant guilds constantly attempt to drive us out of markets with their poor goods and sharp tongues. Their bandits make trade with Corunglain and Athenos an expensive proposition. The time has come to rise out from under the shadow of Elcadan. They covet our lands and our goods, our cities and our people. It is only a matter of time before tehy try to bring us completely under their foul clutches. I will not let that happen."
Conversation with the Baron-
"I hope for Cavius' sake that he is not to blame for this base assault on our Barony. We shall soon find out, my father. That is certain."
"Sherwood is retrieving information from Lady Sallavarian as we speak and we return to his tower for more research from James the Red. The Cult of the Blackflame may have risen again, but the Guardians of the Light shall extinguish that vile flame once and for all time."
"It does me well to know that Elspeth has managed to revive you and help you to regain your strength. Now we shall take our revenge upon the perpetrators."
"I want you to know that even though I depart our borders, I am committed to the defense of our lands. I have taken a portion of the spoils for more defense weapons for Timberline. As you spoke to me in my youth that Elcadan was an evil force that we constantly strive to free ourselves from, I am now able to take up that cause, my father. I will make you proud and I will help us take Pyris to new heights. Even now the seeds are being laid. The goals are to strike at Elcadan on many levels, and whittle their influence away. We cannot do battle with them on the field and be victorious as yet, but one day the flag of Pyris will fly over Elcadan city. This I swear."
"Rest and recover the remainder of your strength. I hope to return again soon."
Validar will turn over the designated percentage of his portion to the appropriate official. The plan is to spend the money directly on defensive seige weapons for Timberline. The town may need the extra defense in the future.
"Personally I do not choose to put my fate in the hands of chance and random events nor upon the indeterminable whims of a being not of this world. Even for something as inauspicious as this matter of distributing treasure. Is it possible for us to be a bit more organized?"

Elspeth
Elspeth:
Elspeth looks up from her prayer book as the door to the baron's bedchamber opens. A pleased look comes to her young face as she sees Sherwood and Lord Validar enter. They must have completed their mission down in Twin Forks and have returned. Excusing herself, Elspeth rises from her chair and goes to greet the new arrivals along with Jallarzi and Baroness Lysandra.
"Welcome back, Sherwood and Lord Validar. I trust your mission was a success?"
When the subject of the Baron's health comes up, Elspeth will say:
"The Baron is almost completely healed from his ordeal. It is becoming most difficult to keep him in bed. Thankfully, Lady Gwendolyn offered to assist in this task. He may return to his regular duties tomorrow."
When speaking privately to Sherwood, Elspeth will add:
"How is Ivy? I trust she is doing well."
---
Elspeth is a tall, but thin woman in her early twenties. She has brown hair and matching eyes. There is an air of great innocent about her. Elspeth wears the standard blue robes of Azrella and her Holy Symbol hangs about her neck.

Jallarzi Sallavarian
Jallarzi:
The Lady Sallavarian is speaking to Baroness Lysandra when the boys return. A sigh of relief follows. Jallarzi goes to greet them, along with Elspeth and the Aunt Lysandra. The movement wakens Edwina, Jallarzi's familiar, who had been sleeping on her mistress' shoulders band upper back like a great cat.
"Hey!", Edwina cries out with a hiss as she is awoken. The pseudo-dragon spreads its wings, as if stretching. "Can't I get a proper nap around here or what?"
Looking around, Edwina spies that stuffy forester Sherwood approaching with some guy in armor. "Well, look what the griffon dragged in: Sherwood!"
Leaping from Jallarzi's shoulders, Edwina flies over to Sherwood, circling him and Validar. "Did you bring me a present?"
Upon being told no, Edwina will pout and wrinkle her little nose. "Boy, do you reek! Take a bath, tree-lover!"
With that, Edwina will buzz Validar to see if he brought her anything good to eat.
"Edwina! Behave!", Jallarzi will chastise. Edwina pauses but then returns to her perch on Jallarzi's shoulder. The pseudo-dragon lands with a toothy grin.
"You have news?", Jallarzi inquires of Sherwood.
"We need to talk," Sherwood answers.
After speaking with Elspeth, Sherwood and I depart for a private chamber. Once there, Sherwood relates his findings concerning Lothar.
"That was unexpected on multiple fronts", is Jallarzi's immediate comment. "Logically, our next step is to go to Rennydale."
"Agreed. I plan to swing by the tower first, to look up James the Red's journals on his initial encounter with the Cult of the Blackflame before traveling to Rennydale. From what I do recall, his notes were written more technical in nature. Much was discussed of the nature of the Blackflame, but not exact details of the adventure."
"Yes, the Swords of Cynalon they were called. I read about them in my great-grandfather's own journals. Jalazar Sallavarian was a priest of Mystra and mage of no small power himself. He was also more a people person than James the Red was. He wrote much about the members and their inter-relationships."
"Then perhaps by comparing the texts of James the Red, Jalazar Sallavarian, and the original Validar we may get a complete picture of their encounter with the Blackflame. Ideally, it will lead us to one of the former Swords who are still alive today."
"A good idea", Jallarzi will agree. "Since you're going past Elcadan, we'll meet at the estate to compare notes in a couple of days."
"That was my plan," Sherwood will state. "Have you heard any news from Kharyna?"
"Not yet, but I wasn't expecting to hear anything yet. When I contacted her, she and her companions were deep inside one of Gaz's towers. They had just finished a major battle and were recuperating. As you recall, we decided that Rennydale needed to be investigated, but that it was probably not a high priority target."
"The situation changed. Everything now points to Rennydale."
"I'll contact Kharyna again and see where they are at. If possible we'll meet up with your group outside of Rennydale."
"Agreed," Sherwood responds.
"How is Kylie holding up?"

Jallarzi is a woman of above average height who is distractingly attractive with her long, wavy honey blond hair and light blue eyes. Her broad smile and pearly-white teeth set off her healthy, tanned complexion most flatteringly. Edwina, her pseudo-dragon familiar resembles a miniature red dragon. Unlike a true red dragon, Edwina's tail ends in a stinger.

Lady Vera Ardel
Lady Vera:
While walking down on the hallways of Castle Pyris in the company of Lady Angelina, Lady Vera spies someone she was not expecting to see.
"Lord Validar! You've returned!"
Rushing up the armored warrior, Lady Vera will greet the young lord.
"Does this mean that you've completed you mysterious mission, my lord? I would just love to hear all about it! Perhaps over a pleasant meal this evening?"

GM Notes
GM Notes:
Grondar can tell that the men are speaking the truth. They also no nothing about any tainted wine. They never saw it on their travels.
Kylie will not find any hidden or concealed compartments in the Inn guest rooms.
When she turns her attention to Identifying some of the items recovered, here are the results:
Leather Armor of Blending +2 - Armor can change form upon the utterance of a command word and can be made to look like other types of clothing.
Longsword +3
Shortsword +1
Horseman's Mace +3
Ring of Sustenance
Ring of Feather Falling
Ring of Vampiric Regeneration - Wearer of the ring will be healed half the damage he does to foes with each strike.
(Also, I don't follow the full requirements for Identify. The spell simply allows the caster to check for a number of enchantments as the caster has levels immediately. Multi-function items will require one check for each extra function. Thus the leather armor took 2 checks, 1 for being enchanted to +2 and a second for it's blending ability. All other items took only 1 check. The wand was left out as it was last on the list and the leather armor used 2 slots. I should get a spell commentary file thrown together one of these days.)

Relon will reach out and grasp his son's hand. "Be well and fight with honor, my son. Much of what you say is true. The Kingdom is on the cusp of changing over to a younger generation. I am sure that you will do me and our ancestors proud.""Rest and recover the remainder of your strength. I hope to return again soon."
Try it and find out!
Ivy
Ivy:
After resting, Ivy will rise and recite her morning prayers and restore her cast magicks. She is pleased that Azrella has granted her access to a whole new level of spells. Ironically, she now could have cast Speak with Dead as per Sherwood's request. No matter, she will instead commit Dispel Magic to be able to extinguish Blackfire should we encounter in again.
Then Ivy will sample the Inn's cooking. It's not as good as Kylie's, but not the worst the priestess has eaten. From there Ivy will see how her comrades are doing offering assistance as needed. When Kylie asks if I've heard of Nylsara, Ivy will say no.
"I look forward to showing you the nicer side of Elcadan, Lord Validar.""You words ring true, fair Ivy. When we arrive in Elcadan a few days hence, I shall accompany you to your temple. The order of Azrella seems well suited to the task. We can use as many allies in this endeavor as possible. The Blue Lady's blessing on the actions in Elcadan should be construed by the nobles and merchants as nothing more than a peaceful attempt to assist the misfortunate. They should not see the other benefits we will receive for some time."

Lilia
Lilia:
Upon seeing the Twin Forks Inn, the Elf Maiden reconsiders her previous opinion of the Green Forest Inn. It seems most charming when compared to this-- place. Lilia will do her studying in Lothar's dwelling until she can no longer keep her eyes open. Then she'll take a quick nap at the Twin Forks Inn. Once rising, she'll memorize a new set of spells. Lilia will take a small sample of the Inn's cooking, but does not have high expectations for it and is not disappointed.
Lilia will then return to Lothar's house to continue her studies. She also has never heard the name of Nylsara before.
Lilia listens as Kylie Identifies some of the remaining items. Of this current batch, the Ring of Feather Falling interests her the most. Of the previously Identified items, the Bracers AC: 4 would attract her greatest interest.
Unless interrupted by others, Lilia is content to study her spellbook.

Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!
Corley
Corley:
Once relieved, Corley will retire to the Twin Forks Inn for a well deserved rest. Upon rising, he will consume more than his fair share of the afternoon meal. From there, Corley will check up on his comrades and how they are fairing this afternoon. He hopes that Lord Validar and Sherwood return soon.
Lord Corley can't help but grin as Lady Kylie departs, watching her lithe form until she is gone from sight."Don't let it trouble you, Corley. There is good sense in that. I'm sure that I can find someone to instruct me in the finer points of this weapon - though perhaps not one so handsome..." She departs with a jaunty flip of her short-cropped hair.

We fight for King and Country!
a little of this.. not much of that
Sherra:
For once it seems that Sherra doesn't have any pressing matters after waking. She will join whoever is down having breakfast and then as everyone splits up, she will see if anyone needs any help. Seemingly left to her own devices, at least for the time being, Sherra will tend to her horse and go over all her equipment for when we will be leaving so she does not have to spend but a moment to be ready.
If nothing happens and no one needs anything by that point, Sherra will make her way back to the small dock and sit there, listening to the river and thinking over the past few days, eventually daydreaming about all her years at sea. Once word of Validar and Sherwood's return is made, she will join the others and see what news is to be had and what the initial decision with the magical items will be.

Oh so many conversations!
VALIDAR -
"I look forward to showing you the nicer side of Elcadan, Lord Validar."
"Ivy of Azrella, those of us in Pyris do not often think that any side of Elcadan could be considered nice. However, I am sure that there is much we do not know of the city. I have visited there several times, but have not seen much outside of the official buildings and Maurice's Keep."
In Pyris, Validar will allow Sherwood to do most of the explaining of the past mission to Elspeth and Jallarzi. He will greet them respectfully.
"Thank you for your assistance with my father, Elspeth of Azrella. He looks ready to take on a horde of Gnolls himself, even now."
Validar hadn't really noticed Elspeth all that closely when she was here before. She seems to be much younger than he was expecting, now that he's had a much closer look and things are settled somewhat. the look about her is much what he expected from Ivy's description however. Validar wonders if the followers of Azrella actually live in the "same world" as him.
Validar is intrigued to meet the Fairie Dragon Edwina. He had heard about the strange familar that accompanied Jallarzi, but had yet to see her up close. "I am sure that we can have something tasty brought up for you, my winged friend. Perhaps some nice fowl?"
Before long, Sherwood and Jallarzi and Elspeth depart leaving me alone with my parents.
"I do agree with your actions. My comments were more directed to finding out about them after the fact, not that you proceeded as you did. I would have preferred to be more prepared is all."
"The situation developed only as we approached Twin Forks. I felt that there was not time to take counsel before putting the actions into play. However, I can let you know for certain that I intend more of the same as well as the continued build up of our forces and defenses. I apologize for the unexpectedness of these actions."
"While I have not made the ideal patient, the fair Elspeth has been most kind in her attempts to heal me. She is a wonderful young woman. But I grow tired of laying here and wish to get back to running the Barony once more."
"It seems that shall happen in the morning, father. I understand your impatience. I would not wish to be confined to a bed for so long as well. Thankfully all is returning to normal."
"I know you have your own counsel, but I recommend the further increase of our soldiers and defenses, should Elcadan prove beligerent. I will continue to provide funds for these areas from our adventuring and there is a sizeable portion of treasure in Gateway that is my portion from the Seekers. That will go a long way to our preparations. There is sufficient monies in Twin Forks to hire guards there directly, but I would be pleased to see Timberline much stronger. Also we should double the light cavalry patrols in the Western forests, despite the removal of Lothar, there are still subordinates working there. We should be able to round them up more easily without their leader."
Relon will reach out and grasp his son's hand. "Be well and fight with honor, my son. Much of what you say is true. The Kingdom is on the cusp of changing over to a younger generation. I am sure that you will do me and our ancestors proud."
"It is my fondest wish to make our family and especially yourself proud of me, father." Validar will return the strong grip. "I have been taught well by you and my mentors. I will strive to bring only honor, glory and nobility to Pyris and to the Kingdom as well."
Later, Validar will meet up with the beautiful Lady Vera Ardel. "Lady Ardel," Validar will respond, "I am pleased to see that you have remained with us in Castle Pyris. I had heard that you might be heading further south for the winter months."
"I am not certain that we are remaining in Pyris for more than a few hours. I had hoped to get some rest in the castle, but we shall be leaving again. Alas, the mission was successful, but uncompleted. We are now on our way north to Corunglain. Is there anything more that you could tell me about your time with the Duke or in Rennydale? Anything that may not have seemed right, but you didn't think about or cast it off as unimportant? Any unusual guests at court while you attended there? The slightest detail may be important. I am certain that we could partake of a quick meal and further conversation while I am still here." Validar will enjoy a meal cooked in the castle and also try to get some sleep here, if only a nap.
Once returning to Twin Forks, Validar will review what has happened while they were gone. At some point, he will see Sherra sitting alone by herself at the docks behind Lothar's old house and approach.
"I always enjoyed watching the water as well. Although we do not have any rivers in Pyris as large as this, I still always found it a time of introspection. And very calming as well."

Sherwood
Sherwood:
Pyris:
Upon entering the Baron's bedchamber, Sherwood notes the presence of several very familiar ladies.
After conversing with Jallarzi in private…
After Pyris:
After hearing what was learned from the guards, Sherwood will consider for a moment. "Far beyond the Broken Lands lie the frozen wastelands of Vassa, the dread realm of the Witch-King Zhengyi. Supposedly he was dispatched by the great paladin Valen and his wife, the sorceress Elena back in the early days of Cynalon. Before that time, the Witch-King frequently assembled great humanoid hordes that swept into the Cynalon lands like a great wave of evil."
"Gottman, the owner of the High Road Inn in Elcadan is a good friend of mine. If there is more information to be had about these men and their activities in Elcadan, he'll know it."
Sherwood will add to the consensus that Nylsara is a name that he has not heard before.
Pyris:
Upon entering the Baron's bedchamber, Sherwood notes the presence of several very familiar ladies.
"For the most part yes, Elspeth. However we've uncovered some new leads that will take us longer to explore. How is the baron doing?""Welcome back, Sherwood and Lord Validar. I trust your mission was a success?"
"Very good, Elspeth. I had every confidence that you could pull him through this ordeal.""The Baron is almost completely healed from his ordeal. It is becoming most difficult to keep him in bed. Thankfully, Lady Gwendolyn offered to assist in this task. He may return to his regular duties tomorrow."
"Ivy is fine. She's pulled her own weight thus far in the adventure.""How is Ivy? I trust she is doing well."
"If it isn't my favorite flying pigeon. No, I didn't bring you a present. Hasn't the cook barred you from the kitchen yet?"Leaping from Jallarzi's shoulders, Edwina flies over to Sherwood, circling him and Validar. "Did you bring me a present?"
Sherwood will chuckle as Edwina flies off to pester Validar.Upon being told no, Edwina will pout and wrinkle her little nose. "Boy, do you reek! Take a bath, tree-lover!"
After conversing with Jallarzi in private…
It was only a matter of time until Jallarzi brought up that question about her apprentice. "Kylie is well, all things considered. Perhaps feeling a bit overwhelmed at times, but she as done you proud. We might be able to make something of her yet." That last bit was said with a grin."How is Kylie holding up?"
After Pyris:
"I don't believe you did anything wrong, Grondar. In fact, I think the nature of this Blackflame is even direr then I first suspected. Not only does it devour living flesh, but the spirit as well! The reason your spell failed is that Artur's spirit was consumed as well. It no longer exists and thus cannot be summoned back. A most horrible fate."The time comes and the dwarven priest joins Sherwood for the ritual.
Edwina
Edwina:
That definitely gets Edwina's attention! The little dragon will lick her lips in eager anticipation. "And some pastries too?!"Validar is intrigued to meet the Pseudo-Dragon Edwina. He had heard about the strange familiar that accompanied Jallarzi, but had yet to see her up close. "I am sure that we can have something tasty brought up for you, my winged friend. Perhaps some nice fowl?"
Elspeth
Elspeth:
"He is a strong willed man", Elspeth will state with a smile. "I am pleased that I was able to help in this matter. If you will excuse me, I will let you catch up on things in private.""Thank you for your assistance with my father, Elspeth of Azrella. He looks ready to take on a horde of Gnolls himself, even now."

Lunch with Validar
Vera:
"Corunglain was very different, very fast paced. Raids from the Broken Lands were most frequent, so the Duke's castle was always in a high state of alert. The Duchess kept trying to pawn me off on one of her sons with the idea of marriage. Those two things did sour my desire to remain in Corunglain. I find it offensive for others to consider me some prize in a marriage lottery."
"There were other guests in Corunglain, but none that I found remarkable."
Lady Vera will noticeable cheer up when Validar mentions sharing a quick meal. "I look forward to it Lord Validar. If you will excuse me, I will prepare myself for the meal to come."
With that, Lady Vera and Lady Angelina will depart to get ready.
"Alas, I haven't made my mind up as of yet, Lord Validar. While the climate may be more hospitable, the hosts are somewhat lacking in their graciousness. Castle Pyris is a much more friendlier place to spend time. Have you met Lady Angelina? She has been the most pleasant of company."Later, Validar will meet up with the beautiful Lady Vera Ardel. "Lady Ardel," Validar will respond, "I am pleased to see that you have remained with us in Castle Pyris. I had heard that you might be heading further south for the winter months."
Lady Vera will seem disappointed that Validar's stay is going to be so short. "It appears that you shall be doing much traveling during this cold months, Lord Validar. Alas, my time in Rennydale was a few years back and mostly forgettable. The lord's manor was a cheerless place and I did feel most uncomfortable there. I don't believe that there were any other guests when I was there.""I am not certain that we are remaining in Pyris for more than a few hours.

GM Notes:
GM Notes:
"Very good then.""The situation developed only as we approached Twin Forks. I felt that there was not time to take counsel before putting the actions into play. However, I can let you know for certain that I intend more of the same as well as the continued build up of our forces and defenses. I apologize for the unexpectedness of these actions."
"Yes, I am eager to get back into the thick of things! I am also pleased that you've returned to take a greater role in the Barony.""It seems that shall happen in the morning, father. I understand your impatience. I would not wish to be confined to a bed for so long as well. Thankfully all is returning to normal."
"All of which are reasonable actions. I will alert the appropriate parties and get thing started.""I know you have your own counsel, but I recommend the further increase of our soldiers and defenses, should Elcadan prove belligerent. I will continue to provide funds for these areas from our adventuring and there is a sizeable portion of treasure in Gateway that is my portion from the Seekers. That will go a long way to our preparations. There are sufficient monies in Twin Forks to hire guards there directly, but I would be pleased to see Timberline much stronger. Also we should double the light cavalry patrols in the Western forests, despite the removal of Lothar, there are still subordinates working there. We should be able to round them up more easily without their leader."
"I have every confidence that you will succeed, my son.""It is my fondest wish to make our family and especially yourself proud of me, father." Validar will return the strong grip. "I have been taught well by you and my mentors. I will strive to bring only honor, glory and nobility to Pyris and to the Kingdom as well."
Try it and find out!

Corley:
During the day, Lord Corley will tend to the needs of his mounts. Feeding and grooming them. He will also see to the other horses as need be. Corley notes Sherra on the nearby docks sitting, seemingly lost in thought, but he does not disturb her.

"Also, I was wondering if you would be willing to do me a favor? I am interested in learning to use this sword that I picked up in the armory." Kylie displays the shortsword for Lilia. "I noticed that you carry a similar blade and thought that you might be a good teacher."
=====
Kylie is quite impressed when her spells identify so many of the new items. She has only had the opportunity to use the spell a few times before, and with mixed results. Apparently, her abilities in the magical realm really are improving!
The name Nylsara is proving to be quite the mystery. Even Sherwood admits to not knowing to whom it refers.

When the opportunity arises, Kylie will approach Lilia. "Hi Lilia," she says. "How is your studying of Arkane's spellbooks going? Were you able to learn any exciting new spells? I gained quite a few that I think will be useful.Of the assembled group, only Sherwood, Lilia, and Po actually carry short swords. Sherwood carries both a long and short sword with him.

"Okay," she replies. "I see no problem in waiting until then. We likely won't have identified all of the items before then anyway.""We have some time to resolve the dispersement.

Grondar:
=====
Grondar is disappointed that the interviewed guards don't know more. Still, there is some information there that they can check into.
"I certain support the idea of protecting innocents - it is a major tenet of my beliefs. I don't propose to be reckless in freeing criminals, merely that they not be slain out of hand whenever it's convenient, and that they be given opportunities to reform when it can be done under controlled circumstances.""I can be merciful when the time comes and I can be harsh when need be, my dwarven friend.
Grondar grimaces and says a quick prayer. "Destroying a person's soul is almost beyond comprehension. Truly this is a plague that must be stamped out..""I don't believe you did anything wrong, Grondar. In fact, I think the nature of this Blackflame is even direr then I first suspected. Not only does it devour living flesh, but the spirit as well! The reason your spell failed is that Artur's spirit was consumed as well. It no longer exists and thus cannot be summoned back. "Hmm... I have heard the name mentioned in dread whispers. If he yet lives and is connected to this Cult, then I fear we have a grave task before us indeed."After hearing what was learned from the guards, Sherwood will consider for a moment. VALIDAR -
Grondar - "I certainly support the idea of protecting innocents - it is a major tenet of my beliefs. I don't propose to be reckless in freeing criminals, merely that they not be slain out of hand whenever it's convenient, and that they be given opportunities to reform when it can be done under controlled circumstances."
"We shall see, my dwarven friend. Taking prisoners is the task for an army, not a band of adventurers quick on the move and small in number. It is difficult at best in practice." Satisfied with the little resolution there seems to be, Validar turns his attentions to further preparations.
Validar is intrigued to meet the Pseudo-Dragon Edwina. He had heard about the strange familiar that accompanied Jallarzi, but had yet to see her up close. "I am sure that we can have something tasty brought up for you, my winged friend. Perhaps some nice fowl?"
That definitely gets Edwina's attention! The little dragon will lick her lips in eager anticipation. "And some pastries too?!"
"Perhaps a few. I wouldn't want to spoil your dinner." Validar had heard that the small beast had a voracious appetite, especially for sweets.
"Yes, I am eager to get back into the thick of things! I am also pleased that you've returned to take a greater role in the Barony."
"There is much left in the details with Twin Forks, my father. I plan to continue my role here as well indefinitely. The call to battle in Gateway was strong and my time amongst the Seekers was glorious. The Seige of Gateway was a battle that made my blood boil and filled me with emotions I had not felt before. My place truly is on the field of battle. And my place is in the West, protecting Pyris' interests."
"I have every confidence that you will succeed, my son."
Validar takes great pride in his father's words. "We will speak more before I depart. I have some tasks to see to. And I will try to keep in touch regarding our mission and continued plans. It would be helpful if there were some magickal communication form that would allow me to keep you apprised of the situation. Does your magist have anything of this sort?"
Vera - "Alas, I haven't made my mind up as of yet, Lord Validar. While the climate may be more hospitable, the hosts are somewhat lacking in their graciousness. Castle Pyris is a much more friendlier place to spend time. Have you met Lady Angelina? She has been the most pleasant of company."
"Pyris would be honored to have you continue to grace our halls, Lady Vera. And, no, I don't believe we've had the pleasure. Lady Angelina, is it? I am Lord Validar." Validar will take the lady's hand and kiss it gallantly.
"Thank you for you information, Lady Vera."
Lady Vera will noticeable cheer up when Validar mentions sharing a quick meal. "I look forward to it Lord Validar. If you will excuse me, I will prepare myself for the meal to come."
With that, Lady Vera and Lady Angelina will depart to get ready.
"I will meet you momentarily." Validar will take time before and after the meal to put into place all the details he can regarding the situation in Twin Forks. An accountant and scribe will be appointed to the task of distributing and recording the fund dispersements and a retinue of guards will be assigned to the town as well. Validar will tell his full plan to the Baron for further follow through of the details. With Sherwood's help and a state-run trade route established, Twin Forks should both quickly grow an also be a perfect stepping stone into Elcadan's territory.
After hearing what was learned from the guards, Sherwood will consider for a moment. "Far beyond the Broken Lands lie the frozen wastelands of Vassa, the dread realm of the Witch-King Zhengyi. "We shall not have to worry about the redemption of our enemies, if the hordes of Vassa are our foes. It would explain the continued raids that plague us from the broken lands. While not as organized as eons ago, there has been much more intelligence behind the humanoids attacks than they normally would be given credit for."
"I have read the stories of Vassa's hordes and the evil of the Witch-King. He was defeated just after Cynalon was formed by King Victor the First. But his hordes had ravaged this area for thousands of years. Much like the situation with the Swords of Cynalon, there was no clear indication of what happened. Only that the hordes' rampaging ceased. Do you have reason for suggesting that Vassa may be behind the Cult? Or is it mere conjecture?"
"Gottman, the owner of the High Road Inn in Elcadan is a good friend of mine. If there is more information to be had about these men and their activities in Elcadan, he'll know it."
"I think we should complete our tasks here and be on our way. There is little left to do here in Twin Forks at the moment and with all preparations for this place complete we should move out for Sherwood's tower. I would like to take the next steps to solving the riddle that confounds us."

Conquer or Die!
a sight to sea..
Sherra:
"It's not nearly the same as taming the sea. The feel of a solid deck of a good ship beneath your bare feet as it rolls over the waves. I really don't think there is anything that can compare to that, but it is a fine river," Sherra will continue to smile as she remembers the excitement of the open sea.
Sherra will stand and be ready to accompany Validar back to the others, as she figures that will be happening now that he has returned. "So any good news to tell?" she will ask him before she turns away from the river.
Sherra will look up with a start not realizing how much time must have passed. She will smile at Validar and return to looking at the river.Once returning to Twin Forks, Validar will review what has happened while they were gone. At some point, he will see Sherra sitting alone by herself at the docks behind Lothar's old house and approach.
"I always enjoyed watching the water as well. Although we do not have any rivers in Pyris as large as this, I still always found it a time of introspection. And very calming as well."

Lilia the Instructor
Lilia:
"Greetings, Kylie. Yes, Arkane's spellbook has been most enlightening. It includes several of the most desirable spells of this level: Fireball, Lightning Bolt, Dispel Magic, the ability to fly without the need of wings and to create a field of invisibility. Other spells include the summon of creatures to defend me and conjuring an ghost-like steed for fast travel. If the spells in this book is any indication, then the ones in the next two tomes must be wondrous indeed!"
While Lilia would dearly love to continue studying the spell book, young Kylie's desire to know more about her elven heritage is important as well. From the sounds if it, she's been mostly raised as a human.
"Come, let us step out doors where we can have more room to maneuver."
Along the way, Lilia will draw her own shortsword.
"My own shortsword is mildly enchanted and was a gift from my father upon reaching the age to be considered an adult. It is a prized possession."
Out behind Lothar's house, Lilia will stop and move her blade before her.
"The shortsword is the traditional melee weapon for us elves for two reasons. One is because it is a swift weapon and is light to carry. Since many elves are archers as well, the shortsword is a good fall back weapon should the enemy close ranks and using a bow no longer becomes practical."
"A shortsword is much like a dagger, but only longer. It is almost as fast as a dagger, but capable of delivering more damage. A magical shortsword becomes an extremely valuable weapon. Show me how you would engage in battle with a shortsword."
Lilia watches as the half-elf complies with her request.
"No, that is wrong. The shortsword is a thrusting weapon, keep it between yourself and your foe at all times. Only a human would hold a shortsword like that. They are too accustomed to simply overpowering a foe with their swords, using them like clubs instead of the subtle finesse of a shortsword. In this position you can either attack or use the blade to block an incoming attack."
"Move on the balls of your feet. Fast footwork is the key to the proper use of a shortsword. Moving side to side to keep your opponent off balance and make yourself less of a target."
Lilia demonstrates this with her own sword, moving back and forth in front of the tree behind Lothar's house. He blade is held out in front of her at all times. Anyone rushing her would impale themselves upon it.
"Shift back and forth and when an opening presents itself, you lunge forward for the kill!"
Lilia suddenly lunges forward, driving her sword into the trunk of the tree. The blade is pulled out once more and Lilia steps aside.
"Now you try it."
Lilia looks up, annoyed to be interrupted from her studies. However, upon seeing the half-elf, her mood softens considerably. Next to her clansman, Laucian, Kylie is the closest thing to her own kind among this group and deserving of better treatment. When the opportunity arises, Kylie will approach Lilia. "Hi Lilia," she says. "How is your studying of Arkane's spellbooks going? Were you able to learn any exciting new spells? I gained quite a few that I think will be useful."

"Ah, yes the shortsword, the preferred weapon of many elves. I have been fully trained in its usage.""Also, I was wondering if you would be willing to do me a favor? Sherwood
Sherwood:
"While the Witch-King himself did not create the cult, it was started by Lerdron, the Lord of Blackflame, one of the dreaded Lich Lords. The Lich Lords did serve the Witch-King, so Vassa does figure into this to some degree. It was written that the Lich Lords were defeated by the Fellowship of Mages, the founders of the original Elcadan before Cynalon even existed. It is possible that they were not truly defeated, perhaps even imprisoned in some manner. It is known that they city where Lich Lords did hold court, Oos, was wiped from the face of the Earth in the battle. I have heard rumors of adventuring bands occasionally making the trek through the Broken Lands in search of the lost city of Oos for whatever treasures it might hold. Perhaps someone finally did find it and uncovered far more then they bargain for. It would also tie with Artur and Arkane arriving from Corunglain through the Broken Lands. If the Cult has resurfaced, then the true masters of Blackflame most lie within Vassa. Perhaps the information we can obtain from our ancestors will clarify things for us."
"Most would agree that the destroying of another soul is far worse than simple murder. A most heinous crime."Grondar grimaces and says a quick prayer. "Destroying a person's soul is almost beyond comprehension. Truly this is a plague that must be stamped out.."
"Actually, it was the other way around. The hordes were defeated and driven back and then Cynalon was formed by Victor the First, but you have the gist of the situation. Vassa being behind the cult is just conjecture at this point, but it does fit the facts.""I have read the stories of Vassa's hordes and the evil of the Witch-King.
"While the Witch-King himself did not create the cult, it was started by Lerdron, the Lord of Blackflame, one of the dreaded Lich Lords. "Agreed. Tomorrow morning we shall leave for my tower. It is essentially on the way to Elcadan, so it will not greatly reduce our arrival time in Rennydale.""I think we should complete our tasks here and be on our way. There is little left to do here in Twin Forks at the moment and with all preparations for this place complete we should move out for Sherwood's tower. I would like to take the next steps to solving the riddle that confounds us."
I do what is necessary.

GM Notes:
Lady Angelina will slightly blush at the introduction and courtesy in greeting. "I am pleased to finally meet you, Lord Validar. Words of your exploits are frequently heard within the walls of Castle Pyris. The Baroness speaks frequently of you."
"I am pleased to have you at my side once more, Validar. Woe be to our enemies!""There is much left in the details with Twin Forks, my father. I plan to continue my role here as well indefinitely. The call to battle in Gateway was strong and my time amongst the Seekers was glorious. The Siege of Gateway was a battle that made my blood boil and filled me with emotions I had not felt before. My place truly is on the field of battle. And my place is in the West, protecting Pyris' interests."
"I will have to look into the matter. Nothing comes to mind at the moment, but mages tend to be secretive of their powers to non-mages."Validar takes great pride in his father's words. "We will speak more before I depart. I have some tasks to see to. And I will try to keep in touch regarding our mission and continued plans. It would be helpful if there were some magickal communication form that would allow me to keep you apprised of the situation. Does your magist have anything of this sort?"
"Thank you, Lord Validar," Lady Vera will state. "You are most gallant.""Pyris would be honored to have you continue to grace our halls, Lady Vera. And, no, I don't believe we've had the pleasure. Lady Angelina, is it? I am Lord Validar." Validar will take the lady's hand and kiss it gallantly.

Try it and find out!
Corley watches from afar
Corley:
Lord Corley looks up from his tending of the horses as Lilia and Kylie come into view. Both ladies have a short sword in their hand. Lady Lilia then begins to instruct Lady Kylie in the proper use of the smaller blade. Corley will watch with interest from a distance, but does not interfere.

VALIDAR -
"I am pleased to have you at my side once more, Validar. Woe be to our enemies!"
"Woe, indeed, father. It is time for Pyris to take her next step into the glory and honor that she deserves."
"I will have to look into the matter. Nothing comes to mind at the moment, but mages tend to be secretive of their powers to non-mages."
"Truly I think the world would be a better place without all these mages and their secret writings and hidden labratories and potions and such. Alas they are here and we must make the most of their talents."

"The pleasure is mine, ladies. It is nice to meet you as well, Lady Angelina. I have met your father, Sir Belfor, some time ago. My mother speaks highly of you."
Either before or after the meal, Validar will take a few moments to discretely ask Angelina if she has learned anything about Lady Vera.
Validar listens as Sherra talks about her connection with the sea and she obviously feels very strongly about it. However, again she does not volunteer any information about herself.
"I have not spent any time on the open sea as yet myself. How long have you been a sailor?"
Sherra will stand and be ready to accompany Validar back to the others, as she figures that will be happening now that he has returned. "So any good news to tell?" she will ask him before she turns away from the river.
"I cannot say that anything dramatic was discovered. There are connections developing and a quick study of Sherwood's ancestral history may give us more details, but we have our trail to follow and perhaps more information as we travel it."

Truly our adventures will be the stuff of new legends. While I can think of no more dread foes than these, indeed we can reshape the Kingdom if not the world by opposing such vile evil. I hope your insinuations hold truth to them."

Laucian
Rising from the bed Laucian rubs his eyes and stretches. The floor is cold on his bare feet. He begins praying to Ehlonna for her continued guidance and blessings. Upon completion he realizes he can recall more spells than before.
He quickly dawns his armor, weapons and his boots. After checking if he hasn't forgotten anything he heads down to partake in the breakfast provided by then inn. Eating sparingly of the fruits, nuts and water provided he will excuse himself and walks outside into early morning air feeling quite refreshed.
During the day he will take out his bow and begin inspect it, Once satisfied he will begin to wipe the it. Placing it in his quiver he will remove the arrow supplies from his saddlebags and begin working on new arrows for the archers.
After a time he will replace the equipment to his saddlebags, he will seek out Grondar and head to the garrison.
Seeing the guards outside the garrison, "Good day to you, We would like to see the prisoners."
He begins to question the three men hired by Artur and Arkane. The men surprisingly are gab about what they know.
As the men begin to tell their tales of events several points spring to his attention. The fact they came from Elcadan 4 days prier is very interesting to him. Surely this city hold many secrets that need to be unveiled. The other was the notion they came out of the Broken Lands unscathed. The idea of hiring bodyguards and not using them also seems little outlandish to him and he will make a point of this to Validar and Sherwood.
As the questions is drawn to a close, " I thank you for your help. And I am bound my word, I will speak to those who hold you.
On his way back to the others he will ask Grondar, "Do you believe we can trust them? They did raise some similiarites between what Lothar attested to."
Upon Sherwood's/Validar's return he will tell them of what they found. "These men have raised some interesting points that Lothar said. All three had no contact with Lothar and from what they say Artur and Arkane left them in the dark. If these men were paid mercenaries or body guards than I believe they pose little threat to us and those around them. I gave them my word I would do what I could for them. If this information is true, can we send word for their release or to lesson their sentence?"

"I have not heard the name of Nylsara before now."
Returning to the house Laucian watches as Lilia teaches Kylie the art of the short sword. After a time he will remove his fletcher equipment from his saddle bag and begin working on new shafts for the archers.

Grondar:
=====
Grondar listens carefully to the information presented as Sherwood and Validar discuss the history of the Witch-King, the Cult and the war against them. Nearly all of this he had not known previously, but he fears that it may prove important in the not-too-distant future. "That is an ugly story, and bodes darkly for our future. Still, we must do what we can, and utilize whatever allies we may find, to stem this black plague upon the lands."
When Validar turns away, Grondar pauses for several moments, considering. It is clear that he and the noble warrior have radically divergent views on some of these issues. He can't argue that it is sometimes difficult to do what is right, but he believes the effort should be made whenever possible."We shall see, my dwarven friend. Taking prisoners is the task for an army, not a band of adventurers quick on the move and small in number. It is difficult at best in practice." Satisfied with the little resolution there seems to be, Validar turns his attentions to further preparations.
Grondar can only nod in agreement with Sherwood's statement."Most would agree that the destroying of another soul is far worse than simple murder. A most heinous crime."

Grondar considers his elven friend's question for a moment as they walk. "Insofar as what they told us, I believe so. It is given to my order to be able to discern lies, and I detected none. I believe we can consider the information they gave to be true to the best of their knowledge."On his way back to the others he will ask Grondar, "Do you believe we can trust them? Kylie:
=====
Kylie is happy the Lilia has agreed to help her master the new weapon. "Okay," she says, and follows her elven friend outside. She listens carefully as Lilia describes the background of the weapon and it's connection to the elven peoples. There is much she doesn't know about that side of her heritage, and she is happy to learn more. It is still her fondest wish to be able some day to visit among her own people on that side of her family.
When instructed, Kylie attempts to mock-fight using the weapon. It's greater weight over the knives she is used to using throws her off, and Lilia corrects her for her errors. "I'm sorry. I'm used to using my knives, and the greater weight of this weapon seems to impel me to change my style. I need to focus more on maintaining the style I learned with the knives and transferring it to the heavier sword."
That said, Kylie attempts to do so, after watching Lilia demonstrate on the defenseless tree. Of course, a stabbing blade like these is likely to do little permanent damage, nevertheless Kylie finds it strange that an elf would do so. Kylie does a much better job this time, treating the shortsword as much like a knife as she can manage. Still certain muscles in her forearm feel the difference in weight, and she realizes that they will need to develop a bit more before she will feel truly comfortable with the weapon.
As they practice, they seem to draw a small crowd of onlookers as first Lord Corley and then Laucian take up positions to watch. Kylie gives each a smile as the opportunity occurs as she continues her practice.
"That is true," Kylie replies. "It seems I have much to look forward to. Certainly, flying and going unseen would be of great usefulness to me." Her eyes get a far-away look as she envisions the things she might be able to do with such abilities. "It is almost hard to imagine what might lie in the more advanced books."Lilia looks up, annoyed to be interrupted from her studies. However, upon seeing the half-elf, her mood softens considerably. Next to her clansman, Laucian, Kylie is the closest thing to her own kind among this group and deserving of better treatment.

As of late, Lady Ardel has taken a great interest in knowing more about Validar.

Sherwood
Sherwood:
"Plus, Cynalon, when first founded, only consisted of what we now call the Inner Kingdom. It was many years before the lands of the Outer Kingdom were free enough from humanoid incursions to be safely settled. Taking six years to finally defeat the Witch-King isn't all that surprising given all the difficulties our founding fathers had to contend with."
"The magicks used to create a lich are spells of the highest level. Currently, there is no one in Cynalon capable of employing such spells. The closest being my Uncle Sharadin, the Archmage of Gateway. To confront a lich is to confront the most powerful and ruthless type of spellcaster imaginable. A mage of the highest level with hundreds, if not thousands of years to hone their skills and devise magicks unseen by mortal men. At the present, we need to only stop the plots of their agents as we grow in our own personal power. Eventually, should we survive, then we may be able to stop the source of this evil in our lands."
After hearing what Laucian has to say, and is backed up by Grondar, Sherwood will consider for a moment.
"If they are telling the truth, then they really may not have had anything to do with any of thus. As for why they were hired in the first place, the only thing that makes sense is to serve as cannon fodder should Artur and Arkane run into something they couldn't handle. Artur did try to flee once he realized he was overmatched. Since they don't appear to have committed any crimes, they should be set loose then."
"That is correct for the most part. Humanoid incursions have plagued the kingdom since it was founded and continue to this very day. None, however, have approached the size and strength of any of the great hordes. Some of the theories I have read indicate that the hordes were either gathered by unusually strong leaders or sorcery was involved. While it is true that most humanoids have a great dislike of human, elves, dwarves, and other races, they also battle amongst themselves. Thankfully this tends to decrease their numbers without any effort on our part, blunting their own threat to us.""The stories that I read indicated that the Witch-King was not defeated until some six years after the forming of Cynalon by the Great King Victor. The main attack on the hordes came before the Kingdom was established, but the attacks continued to come in smaller waves until the Witch King was defeated. That was part of the way the historians established his destruction: the hordes were not reformed again. Of course that does not mean that Vassa was beaten permanently."

"I sincerely hope they do not, Validar. I am no coward, but I also know when I am severely overmatched. This band is nowhere near powerful enough to directly take on a lich, let alone several of them. Indeed, were I to gather the mightiest adventures that I know, we might succeed in defeating one lich, but at a horrific cost.""Even better. "Such is the way of history, or so it seems. There are far to many ugly historical stories and not enough uplifting ones. As the old curse goes, 'May you live in interesting times.' These days are most interesting.""That is an ugly story, and bodes darkly for our future. "While the shortsword is heavier than a knife, it isn't much more than the shortbow you use. You use different muscles with between the bow and the sword, but together they compliment each other nicely. Furthermore, acquiring a enchanted shortsword is highly desirable, as such weapons are usually light as a feather, making them even easier to use."When instructed, Kylie attempts to mock-fight using the weapon. Chareos
The young mage rises after a much needed rest feeling quite refreshed. He gets dressed and gathers his equipment and proceeds downstairs. He will greet the others with a morning and will fill his plate with the food the inn has provided.
Having finished with the First level tome the night before he returns it{ To whomever holds the spell books} Gathering up the second spell book He finds a large tree near Lothar's house and begins studying the new tome.
Occasionally he looks over the top of the books to see the others coming and going. Laucian and Grondar can be seen walking back conversing. He raises to his feet and approaches them, "Did you learn anything of interest? Or did they wish to remain silent?"
As the day rolls on he returns back to his tree and begins to study the pages most eagerly. He looks over the pages to see Kylie and Lilia apparently training for the up coming journey . As well as Corley in the stables with Laucian nearby, working on what appears to be shafts. The young man closes his tome and returns it, he gathers his Quarter Staff and approaches the two men. "Seeing how we have sometime on our hands I was wondering if either of you would wish to partake in some training?" he will look between both Corley and Laucian with a easy smile.
The young mage listens with open ears as Sherwood retells the tale of the Witch-King and his apparent demise at the hands of the Paladin and Sorceress. His curiousity gets the better of him. " Would you happen to have records of this as well? I would be most interested to learn more."

Kylie:
Kylie smiles. "What you say makes sense. I did note that one of the newly-acquired magic items was a shortsword. Perhaps that would be a good choice for me, then. Of course, the Bracers would be desireable too, as the enchantment appears to be far stronger that the one on these," she says, indicating the bracers on her own arms."While the shortsword is heavier than a knife, it isn't much more than the shortbow you use. You use different muscles with between the bow and the sword, but together they compliment each other nicely. Furthermore, acquiring a enchanted shortsword is highly desirable, as such weapons are usually light as a feather, making them even easier to use."

Grondar:
Returning from speaking with the captives, Grondar and Laucian are met by Chareos.

Returning from speaking with the captives, Grondar and Laucian are met by Chareos.
"It seems they were hired as bodyguards by Arkane and Artur," the dwarf replies. "The most interesting points were that the two had come down through the Broken Lands, and that they stopped for several days in Elcadan before coming here.""Did you learn anything of interest? Or did they wish to remain silent?"
=====
"I would support that decision," Grondar replies. "They cooperated fully and I believe that they were telling the truth as they knew it. We have no good reason to hold them. If no one objects, I will go ask Geris to release them.""If they are telling the truth, then they really may not have had anything to do with any of thus. As for why they were hired in the first place, the only thing that makes sense is to serve as cannon fodder should Artur and Arkane run into something they couldn't handle. Artur did try to flee once he realized he was overmatched. Since they don't appear to have committed any crimes, they should be set loose then."
The dwarf snorts amusedly. "You are right, Sherwood. Unfortunately, most times interesting translates to pain and suffering for a lot of people. It is my life's wish and goal to make life far less interesting for as many people as possible.""Such is the way of history, or so it seems. There are far to many ugly historical stories and not enough uplifting ones. As the old curse goes, 'May you live in interesting times.' These days are most interesting."
Lord Corley
Corley:
Lord Corley watches with interest as the elf maiden Lilia instructs Lady Kylie in the proper use of the shortsword. What an odd fighting style! It seems to emphasis speed and agility over bone crushing force. Small wonder Corley never bothered to use such a little sword.
Still it makes sense from the standpoint that elves are smaller in stature, lacking in physical strength, but seeming more agile. Regardless, it is an eye opening experience.
Lord Corley's is drawn away from the contest by the arrival of Chareos.

It hardly seems to be a fair contest to use my two-handed sword against your staff and I have no desire to cause you injury.""Seeing how we have sometime on our hands I was wondering if either of you would wish to partake in some training?" he will look between both Corley and Laucian with an easy smile.
We fight for King and Country!
Sherwood
Sherwood:
"Anything beyond that is idle speculation, for no one from that adventure ever returned to Cynalon. Since the humanoid hordes never did regain strength, it was assumed that the Witch-King was defeated. The fact that neither Valen nor Elena returned, suggests that perhaps it was mutual destruction on both sides. As in the case of many things, the truth might be completely different and may well never be discovered. Admittedly, it is just one of many mysteries I would love to investigate were it not for the continued defense of Cynalon requiring my presence."
"It is believed that the Witch-King was a lich of great power. Fitting that such a monster would live in a barren wasteland such as Vassa. It is said he created the five Crowns of Eternal Night which in turn seduced Alphatian Mages into become the dreaded Lich Lords who it is believed served the Witch-Kings interests from their stronghold in the city of Oos."
"Furthermore, it is believed that these same Crowns caused the Fellowship of Mages to descend into madness after defeating the Lich Lords many years earlier. These Crowns of Eternal Night are artifacts of the highest degree of evil. If the Witch-King crafted them, then he is perhaps the most powerful mage that I am aware of."
While Grondar is running that errand, Sherwood will seek out Laucian, Kylie, or Sherra, or which one he comes across first.
"I have a small task for you. We are releasing the men who were accompanying Artur and Arkane. I would like you to follow them and observe what they do. They appear to be innocents in this affair and I merely wish to verify that they are nothing more than that."

"There are some records from those days. Notes and musings from my distant ancestor, James Sculley who adventured with King Victor the First himself. Unfortunately, there is not much known about the mission of Valen and Elena. They and their adventuring band set out on the difficult trek to reach the wastelands of Vassa and the remote Citadel of the Witch-King. They departed the Inner Kingdom and fought their way through the Broken Lands and through other dangers during their weeks long expedition."The young mage listens with open ears as Sherwood retells the tale of the Witch-King and his apparent demise at the hands of the Paladin and Sorceress. His curiosity gets the better of him. " Would you happen to have records of this as well? I would be most interested to learn more."

I do what is necessary.
Notes
Notes:
Grondar will do as Sherwood requests, running off to talk with Geris. Once he gets back, he'll start on Swimming and Dwarven lessons with Sherra.
Kylie is pretty busy with reading spell books and learning a new weapon. Thus, I'll leave Sherwood's errand to Laucian or Sherra.

Good luck with the move, Steven!

Chareos
"What did you have in mind, friend Chareos? It hardly seems to be a fair contest to use my two-handed sword against your staff and I have no desire to cause you injury."
"This is true my friend, To face you with your weapon and no armor on my part would be a folly. What I purpose is a simple game if you will. First we will need a tool A pitchfork or something to that extent, surely there should be one near by. If we remove the head or snap it off we will have two staves. One make shift and my own. What I purpose is lending you my quarter staff and I would take the makeshift one, There by eliminating the advantage of my own weapon with in my hands. If You wish we can Make it best of 3 hits so we do not tired nor hurt one another. If these terms are suitable to you than we can begin."
"Before we begin I wish to tell you this a quarter staff is used more defensively than your two handed sword. So patience is needed."
If Corley agrees he will look for something suitable to use as a makeshift staff and lend him his.
