New Frontiers #11

The battle is just beginning outside the Twin Forks Inn. Arkane quickly moves away from Corley and outside of the Silence around the young nobleman. He chants the words to a spell and suddenly five more Arkanes appear around the mage.

Kylie sneaks in around the backside of the Inn and sees Arkane casting his spell. Seeing that the bandits are roughly lined up to be caught in a Web spell, the half-elf casts that particular spell and creates a Web between the buildings. The magic of the spell swallows up all but one of the bandits around Corley, but Arkane himself remains free. Kylie can't see if her spell also ensnared Artur from her vantage point.

The remaining bandit stabs at Corley with his shortsword, but misses. Corley retaliates with his two-handed sword and nearly cuts the bandit in half. The thug goes down in a bloody mess.

On the other side of the web, Validar dismounts and steels himself for battle against Artur. Kylie's spell comes into existence and the outer edge surrounds Artur. As Validar watches, two remarkable things happen. The first is that the Web is seemingly unaffected by the flickering black flames on Artur's longsword. The second is that grunting, Artur pulls free of the Webs and closes in on Validar!

The noble warrior is ready and scores two hits with his own longsword. Artur is wounded, but not slowed down. The armored warrior strikes back, rocking Validar with a blow far more powerful than should seem possible. The Blackflaming Sword strikes Validar, but other than being hit does not affect him.

Behind Validar, Po tentatively approaches; fear clearly etched on his young face.

Overhead, Sherwood casts Hold Monster hoping to catch both Artur and Arkane in its effect. The magic is cast, but doesn't appear to bother either man.

Out back behind Lothar's house, Laucian brings the bandit on shore. Ivy and the airborne Lilia join him. Sherra comes rushing past from the barge. She drops a length of rope off. "Bind him with this," she instructs as she runs past. "I'm going to check on the others in front of the Inn."

While Ivy works on pulling the arrow out, Laucian quickly removes Lothar's weapons. A sheathed longsword is tossed aside along with a small collection of daggers. Several rings are found on Lothar's fingers and these are removed and tossed onto the pile of weapons. After tying Lothar's hands behind him, Laucian chases after Sherra.

While Lilia watches, Ivy casts a Cure Light Wounds and seals the wound caused by the arrow. Ivy feels Lothar move and the bandit tries to roll over on his back. "Get the hell off of me!", he screams. "Kill them! Kill them all!"

On the road leading in from the north, Grondar and Chareos have encountered Lothar's men. Grondar fires another Crossbow bolt and downs the bandit that was fleeing from him.

A bit further along, Chareos sends his Flaming Sphere after another bandit. The ball of fire closes in on the thug and he goes down as the ball of fire rolls over him.

Both men continue along the road leading to the Twin Forks Inn. As they ride past the bandit's warehouse, Grondar spots movement. The door to the warehouse closes, but there is no one in sight. Did someone just go into the warehouse?

GM Notes:

Another round bites the dust!

Both Sherra and Laucian can see Validar and Artur in battle. The Web obscures their ability to see anyone behind it. They can also see two more bandits rushing in between house from the North.

The Twin Forks map has been updated once more. That gunk on the map is Kylie's Web spell.

Current Hit Points:

Validar - 46 of 63

Now what?

Kylie:

A smile lights her small face as her Web spell catches most of the bandits menacing Corley. Even better, it seems to have succeeded in separating Artur and Arkane.

Corley quickly removes the remaining bandit, leaving little more than a gory pile of flesh and blood behind. Arkane responds by casting what appears to be a Mirror Image spell. Fortunately, this is one that she's familiar with - though she hasn't yet learned it herself - from Jallarzi's demonstration and explanation.

Kylie adjusts her position so that Corley isn't directly between her and the multiple Arkanes. Then, selecting at random, she begins firing at the various images of the mage, knowing that those that are not the real thing will disappear as soon as they are struck.

"Get 'im, Corley!" she shouts. Of course, Corley doesn't know which is the real one either, but if he can get in the midst of the images, the dwarf's spell should prevent the real Arkane from casting any more spells.

Grondar:

The bolt from his crossbow slams into the fleeing bandit, knocking him to the ground. He doesn't appear to be rising immediately, and Grondar prays that he's not dead, but doesn't have time to check on him.

Grondar turns in time to see Chareos' ball of flame roll over another fleeing bandit. Grimacing, Grondar is glad he is far enough away to not smell the burned flesh - something he has experienced before and is unlikely to ever forget. Again, he murmurs a quick prayer for the man, but knows that he must proceed on.

Time is pressing, and Grondar continues to ride into town behind Chareos. A movement off to the side catches the dwarf's attention and he turns to see a door to the warehouse close. Immediately, he becomes suspicious. Grondar considers calling out to Chareos, but knows that the warrior-mage's assistance may be important in apprehending their main targets. Whatever is happening here is a low priority, and Grondar will deal with it himself.

Turning his horse, Grondar rides over near the door he saw close. Dismounting, he strides up to the door. Unfortunately, he's never been much good at stealth, particularly in all this armor, so sneaking up on whoever is inside isn't very likely. Grondar swings the door open and steps back simultaneously, his crossbow at the ready. If no attacks are made on him after a second or two, he steps inside and looks around.

It's possible this may take more than one round, so Grondar will react to events, such as someone driving the wagon out the main doors. Let me know if you need a response to something.

VALIDAR -

As Validar dismounts, he sees the Web spell spring into existence and snare Artur. Not surprisingly Artur easily frees himself, but not in the manner expected. The Black Flame, Validar recalls, burns cold, not hot and so does nothing to the Web. However, his opponent extricates himself quite simply. No matter, Validar thinks to himself as he closes with his foe.

The two combatants close and strike steel against steel. Validar manages to get two good blows to the man's body, but also takes a tremendous blow in return. Feeling that in their initial clash, Validar gave at least as well as he took, the noble warrior presses the attack. He thinks about trying to disarm his dangerous foe, knowing full well that a protracted battle against a bearer of a Black Flame weapon could result in final death. However, Artur is clearly very dangerous and Validar continues his combat without trying any special moves.

After further deliberation, check the called shot. Too difficult against someone as skilled as Artur.

"Watch yourself, Po! Do not get too close. If you can strike from afar, then do so, but this battle is mine sword to sword!!" Validar hopes that Po will have a chance to do something, but his sacrifice is not worth turning Artur's attention.

Validar wonders to himself where the rest of Corley's group ended up to. They were supposed to have advanced on the Inn with Corley. Perhaps he was the only one to break through? Those are issues for another time however, as the Black Flame dances on his opponent's sword and Validar sees an opening and strikes!!

OOC - Welcome back Sherra. Glad to hear the hurricane and tornados didn't 'sink your ship' permanently.

Bless Tymora that the barge was fully equipped with supplies as I had no way to carry anything extra during my most-welcomed swim Sherra thinks as she bolts past.

As she rounds the corner, Sherra can see the chaos of the erupted battle still being waged. She also notices a few bandits that have not yet learned they are in a losing situation. She will alter her course slightly and throw one brace (which means two for any unfamiliar with the term) of throwing knives from one of her wrist sheaths at the closest guard. If he refuses to go down from that attack she will draw her magical dagger and slam into the guard, rolling with the impact and hopefully landing on top of him where she can end his struggling.

===============================================
OOC: Good thing Lothar didn't have Isabel on his side or things wouldn't be going well for us at all. I'm just glad to be back! Thanks Mad and Validar for covering Sherra's actions in my absence.

Corley

Post by Corley »

Corley:

Lord Corley is startled when the Web spell erupts close by. There had been no warning whatsoever and given his Silenced state had there been one, it would have done little good. Daring a look back, the young noble sees Lady Kylie standing in the shadows, a pleased smile illuminating her fair features.

Corley pauses long enough to wave in her direction before turning back to the grim task of battle. The helmet conceals Corley's own smile.

Relocating his foes, Corley mutters a soundless curse as he sees the enemy mage has moved away and was able to invoke magic! There are now six of this accursed mage!

A lesser bandit bars Corley's path, but not for long. Continuing on towards the mage, Corley will close and bring his massive sword into play once more trying to bring the mage down and without killing him if possible.

Decisions, Decisions...

Post by Sherwood »

Sherwood:

The Ranger-Mage continues to hover overhead. No serious injuries have occurred to our side thus far and Sherwood is grateful for that. This whole mission has gone off on a completely unexpected tangent. For a brief moment, Sherwood considers if this assembled group is ready for this serious of a task. That is not to say that the situation regarding Validar's father wasn't serious, but with the inclusion of the Cult of Blackflame events have taken a dire turn.

Sherwood allows himself a momentary swell of pride as Kylie casts a Web that bisects the battle and removes most of the unimportant players. Sherwood's eyes dart back and forth trying to figure out which man is the most dangerous and should be taken out first.

Arkane has slipped beyond the area of effect of the Silence spell and casts a defensive spell for further protection. However Lord Corley is quickly advancing on the mage once more, so that momentarily lessens his danger. The warrior with the Blackflaming sword is the greatest threat right now.

Turning back to him, Sherwood will cast Magic Missile at the man, hoping to give Validar an advantage over him. Artur is the one that Sherwood will like to take alive the most. The effects of the Charm Person spell is weakened against those with great and active minds, so mages are typically less affected by that particular magic.

Sherwood will cast a second Magic Missile should it prove to be necessary, while keeping an eye on Corley's progress with Arkane.

Ivy:

Ivy is about to shoo Laucian away from Lothar, but reconsiders. Lothar could still be a threat even given his current condition, so it is wise to disarm the man and remove any obvious magic items. So Ivy makes no comment about Laucian's efforts.

With great care the arrow is removed. Even more blood comes forth, but that was to be expected. Typically is better to leave the arrow in when dealing with a wound such as this to reduce the amount of bleeding. The bloody arrow is tossed aside and not given another thought by the Priestess.

"We were fortunate," Ivy will tell Lilia. "Had Lothar been facing you, your arrow would have pierced his heart."

Converting one of her spells into healing magic, Ivy chants the words to her Cure Light Wounds spell. A soft blue glow comes over her hand upon the completion of the spell. The hand is then placed over the wound sealing it.

Unexpectedly, Lothar comes to his senses after the completion of the spell and begins to thrash about. Ivy bends down and tries to use her own weight to keep Lothar under control, but isn't heavy enough to slow the bandit down.

"Lie still! You've been injured! You're our prisoner and will be treated fairly!"

Should Lothar continue to resist, Ivy will cast her Hold Person on him in hopes of controlling the bandit.

Lilia takes aim

Post by Lilia »

Lilia:

With Lothar safely on the shore, Lilia lands softly. The duration of her Alter Self spell is unpredictable. However, the Elf Maiden can determine that it should last a minimum of fifteen minutes before trying Tymora's patience.

An arrow drawn and ready to fire, Lilia keeps a close watch on Lothar for any signs of treachery. Laucian steps in to relieve the bandit of his weapons and any potential magic items. That task done, he binds Lothar with a rope Sherra dropped off on her way to assist the others.

Lilia considers going to help them as well, but when Laucian also departs, she decides against it. While not slighting the Priestess' abilities, Lothar should not be left alone with her. Plus the Elf Maiden vowed to Lord Validar that he would be captured and she's a woman of her word.

While Ivy works, Lilia will let her eye wander to the items that were thrown aside. If possible, she will try to determine if any are enchanted, but not at the expense of her guard duties.

Ivy speaks while she works:
"We were fortunate. Had Lothar been facing you, your arrow would have pierced his heart."
"On the contrary, Ivy of Azrella. The Lady of Fate played little part in this. My arrows struck precisely where I aimed them. I specifically aimed to the side away from his heart."

At that moment, the priestess works her magic and Lothar begins to recover. He thrashes about and curses out loud.

Lilia boldly steps forward and points her shaft directly at the face of Lothar.

"You will be silent and cease your movements!", the Elf Maiden will hiss, trying to sound as menacing as possible. "I am an elf and I can see you as plain as day. Our skill with the shortbow is without question. At this close range I will not miss!"
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Chareos

Chareos begins to concentrate on sending his spell after his intended guard. As the Flaming sphere rolls across the town it begins to singe and burn leaving a burnt and charcoal colored path in its wake. The burning globe of fire hunts down and fells the bandit. All that remains of the man is a burnt and smoldering shell of his former self.
The young fighter-mage cringes slightly at the sight of his body. He has known full well what his spell can do, but has never come to terms with it.

The familiar sound of blades clashing catches his ear. His head turns looking for the origin of these sounds. He can see two forms fighting in the distance, one of which is without a doubt Validar, the other he has never seen before.

He begins to ride towards the conflict, as he draws closer the details of them become more apparent in the bonfire and torch light. The unfamiliar armor and weaponry of his opponent begins to manifest out of the darkness. The most unique thing among this man's features is a sword engulfed in black flame. 'Most curious, some sort of enchantment.' he thinks to himself.

As he approaches his eyes fall upon the melee of Validar, the black flamed warrior and Po. He watches for a few moments as the men exchange blows. He quickly slows his horse and dismounts. He begins to cast a magic missile at the black flamed warrior.

Laucian

The Young Elf lowers Lothar to the ground being careful not to injure the bandit any further. He quickly begins looking for weapons and finds several daggers and a long sword. He removes them and tosses them in a pile nearby. Noting the man's rings and not knowing if they are magical or not he also removes those just to be on the safe side.
Sherra quickly runs by and tosses a rope, before he can say anything her form is seen running towards the inn. Laucian quickly ties the man's hands/arms behind him then rises to his feet.

He quickly gives chase after Sherra and comes to a halt near Lothar's house. The scene of several bandits ensnared in a web, Validar, Po, and a warrior come into view. The blade of the warrior catches his eyes as it burns black! He has never seen the likes of such a weapon nor wants to feel its sting.

He places his bow in his quiver and begins to draw his sword and dagger. He stands but for a moment watching his opponent and steeling himself for the ensuing battle. He runs as fast as his feet will carry him towards Val and Po taking up which ever flank on Val's side is clear and engages the Black flame warrior.

Post Continued:

The battle continues!

Hovering overhead, Sherwood unleashes a barrage of Magic Missiles at Artur. Five of the enchanted daggers strike the armored warrior, but fail to slow him down.

Validar closes in on Artur once more, but his strikes are turned aside by Artur. Artur swings his blackflaming sword at Validar. The noble warrior raises his shield for protection. The sword strikes the shield at an odd angle with a loud clang. Unexpectedly, the sword shatters from the impact!! The action startles both Validar and Artur!

Laucian draws a bead with his longbow and fires upon Artur. One of the shafts penetrates the armor and draws blood. Po fires more arrows from his shortbow, but all miss the target.

Further down the road, Chareos can make out enough in the faint torchlight to differentiate between Validar and Artur. He chants the words to his own Magic Missile spell and Artur is struck by to more missiles.

In spite of all the damage done to him, Artur remains on his feet. Still startled by the destruction of his ebony flaming blade, Artur absentmindedly drops the hilt to the ground. Realizing that he has no other weapons on his person and that he is surrounded, Artur begins to sprint away from the area! The armored man moves far faster than would seem possible, nearly twice as fast.

Close by, Sherra tosses a pair of throwing daggers at an approaching guard but is wide of the mark. She can't help but notice as Artur sprints past, rushing back down the road Validar used to ride into town.

On the other side of the web, Corley closes in on Arkane. The enemy mage begins to chant the words to another spell when the silencing field around Corley envelopes him. Before Corley can reach the mage, Kylie sends two shafts his way. One sails harmlessly wide while the other removes one of the images shifting randomly around the mage.

Corley swings his massive sword once, twice. One of his attacks miss, but the other removes yet another image.

A bit further north, Grondar rides up to the bandit warehouse. The dwarven priest dismounts and cautiously moves up to the door he just saw close. Crossbow at the ready, Grondar flings the door open and steps back expecting trouble.

Instead, everything is still and quite inside the warehouse. Close to the door is the covered wagon Kylie described earlier. No one is in sight.

Back on the shores of the Grayhare River, Ivy and Lilia stand over Lothar. Ivy had just healed the bandits' wound and in the process revived him. He begins to squirm and resist even with his hands tied behind him. Ivy attempts to lie on him, but Lothar lashes out with his leg, kicking the Priestess in the stomach, driving her away.

Lilia glides in and points an arrow directly at Lothar's face, giving the bandit reason to pause. Behind Lilia, Ivy regains her footing and chants the words to a Hold Person spell. Upon releasing her magic, Lothar stiffens up and is unmoving.

GM Notes:

My apologies for the lateness of this update. Real life messed up my weekend pretty good!

This post covers one more round of the battle. Hit Points are as per the last update.

Artur fell victim to one of my house rules that I felt I should share with everyone. When someone rolls a natural 1 on their attack roll, I re-roll and if another 1 comes up the weapon used in the attack breaks! It doesn't happen very often, but just enough to add some spice to the game. That's what happened to Artur's sword in the post.

Now what?

VALIDAR -

As Validar continued his combat with the evil fighter, Artur, and his weapon created by the Cult of the Black Flame, he sees a series of magickal blasts slam into his foe from above. Pleased to see that Sherwood has joined the battle with Artur, Validar decides against trying to disarm the man. However, he is skilled and Validar is unable to land any clean blow to his opponent, his sword and armor turning all of Validar's attacks aside.

Artur is just as eagerly returns some of his own thrusts, but the young noble is just as easily able to deflect the blows harmlessly. Validar raises his shield upward to block an overhead strike by the flaming weapon and quite surprisingly the sword shatters with the powerful blow. Both men pause for a moment at the incredible events.

Just then an arrow strikes Artur, drawing blood while another bounces off the fighter's helm. More arrows come in from the flank of Validar and he is pleased to see that Po took his advice.

Not to be outdone, more magickal bolts fly in and strike Artur from the other direction. Artur drops the hilt of his weapon and then starts running away. He heads out of the city towards the east at an alarming speed. His is almost twice as fast as an ordinary man.

Validar quickly turns and doesn't waste a moment as he re-mounts Havok. "To your horses!", Validar shouts, his blade raised before him as he spurs his noble mount forward at full speed. Hopefully some of the others have their mounts nearby as well. "Po, get back on your horse and follow me. Keep your bow ready if we can get closer to him. We can not let him out-distance us." As he continues his ride, Validar hopes that Sherwood will assist them with at least one more attack volley.

Seeing the handsome warrior wave, Kylie winks back at him before turning to fire. Her efforts on that front are rewarded as she sees one of the illusionary wizards disappear. Moving in close, Corley also manages to remove one of the fake mages.

Having met with some success, Kylie decides to maintain the course. Kylie advances forward to reduce the range and her chances of hitting her friend, then fires off another pair of arrows.

Grondar breathes a sigh of relief when he isn't instantly skewered upon opening the door. As he gazes through the door, it occurs to him that it is a little too quiet in there. Chances are someone is lying in wait for him.

Switching to his mace in the close confines of the doorway, Grondar steps through, his shield leading the way. He has every expectation of someone leaping out and trying to cut him down. As soon as he has a good view, he'll check to see if there are horses hitched up to the wagon. Initially, he'll stay near the wall and try to circle the interior of the building that way. If he encounters no opposition, he'll move toward the wagon.

Tymora is attempting to keep me humble I see, Sherra thinks and even manages a small smile despite the seriousness of combat around her and all of us.

"What the...??" Sherra stammers as the full-armored Artur rushes past with incredible speed.
Validar quickly turns and doesn't waste a moment as he re-mounts Havok. "To your horses!", Validar shouts, his blade raised before him as he spurs his noble mount forward at full speed.
Sherra knows her horse is quite some distance away and that the other horses have long been driven off. She can not match speeds with Artur, so she focuses on the one task that she can accomplish, dealing with these pesky guards so that Validar and the others can give proper chase without being slowed or hindered.

She keeps her focus on the one guard who was blessed enough to avoid her inital barrage of throwing knives. If he is still a bit away, she will throw a second brace at him and continue to close. If he is close enough for melee, then she will draw her magical dagger and dispatch him that way.

Laucian

Standing near Lothar's house Laucian readies himself and raises his bow. He takes aim at the struggle between Validar and Artur, seeing an opening he takes aim and fires. As he is about to let loose five bolt of energy from above slam into the warrior. Slightly distracted by this, Laucian lets loose with an wild shot. Thankfully his shot is wide of both men. Cursing to himself in elvish he draws another shaft and takes aim again. He stands poised ready to fire as Artur's blade lands a blow against Validar's defenses. Both warriors seem to hesitate though he can not see why. Not letting an opportunity get away the Elf lets loose another volley. His aim is true and penetrates his armor near the warrior's shoulder.

Laucian calmly knocks another arrow to his bow as two daggers of energy find their target on the bewildered warrior. Amazingly enough The man still stands but not for long. The man soon turns and runs. Laucian quickly takes aim and lets loose another shaft but the Artur is moving much faster than he had anticipated, and his arrow sails harmlessly into the side of a house.

Val yells "To your horses!"
Laucian calmly knocks another arrow and takes aim at Artur as he runs away. He will aim at his back between his shoulder blades in the hopes of piercing one of the man's lungs.

Chareos comes to a halt near the inn and watches as Validar and Artur exchange blows. Several arrows glance off the man's armor; only one finds its mark. He watches as the battle seems to be going in either direction and he begins to chant the word to a magic missile spell. Two beams of energy fly from the young mage's hand and slam into the man's side. Soon after the men exchange blows yet again but with the strangest of effects. The warrior's black flamed sword shatters as Validar raises his shield to block. His eyes widen at the man's misfortune as he throws down his hilt and flees.

"To your horses!" Validar yells. Chareos follows suit and remounts his steed and begins to ride after him.

If the warrior comes into range of a Sleep spell and none of the party are near he will slow down and begin to cast Sleep upon him. If not he will ride his mount as hard as he can after the warrior in the hopes of getting in front of him.

Undaunted, Corley continues to advance and slash at the mage until he hits something real.

Sherwood:

Continuing to hover overhead, Sherwood watches as Magic Missiles and arrows strike Artur from all sides. Yet the warrior stands! Unexpectedly, the flaming black sword shatters against Validar's shield! Tymora was truly with us during this battle! With the sword destroyed, Artur's threat has been significantly reduced.

The warrior, realizing that the tide has turned against him, makes a break for it. Sherwood can't be sure just how he is gaining such incredible velocities. A number of possibilities come to mind. It could be the result of a Haste spell, or a Potion of Speed, or could be caused by a magic item such as Boots of Speed. A Dispel Magic would take out two of those three options.

But if Sherwood guesses wrong, then he would have wasted a spell and allowed Artur to travel even further along. Instead, Sherwood will send another volley of Magic Missiles his way and then fly after the fleet-footed fighter.

"On the contrary, Ivy of Azrella. The Lady of Fate played little part in this. My arrows struck precisely where I aimed them. I specifically aimed to the side away from his heart."
"Oh, I see," Ivy responds. The priestess can't help but wonder if the elf has any idea just how haughty she sounds. Apparently self-confidence is not lacking with her. "A wise course of action."

The next thing Ivy knows, Lothar kicks her in the stomach and she is flung back. Strangely, Ivy was unhurt by the assault. Then she remembers the protective magic that Sherwood cast upon her. The enchantment must still be in operation and continues to protect Ivy from harm.

Overcoming that shock, Ivy looks back to see Lilia aiming her bow at almost point blank range. There appears to be a stand off between Lothar and Lilia that somehow must be broken. To solve this problem, Ivy casts Hold Person on Lothar. Tymora smiles on the Priestess and Lothar appears to have gone rigid.

Ivy lets out a loud sigh. "He shouldn't trouble us any further. The spell should last five minutes or so. We should further incapacitate him until Sherwood arrives."

Grabbing more of the rope Sherra dropped off, Ivy will bind Lothar's legs at the knees and ankles. If possible, Ivy will attempt to tie Lothar to something solid on the ground, be it a tree, a nearby dock support or even the barge itself.

Lilia:
"Oh, I see," Ivy responds. "A wise course of action."
"Indeed", Lilia responds in her typical stoic manner.

After Lothar kicks Ivy away, Lilia steps in and delivers her threat to Lothar. She can see the bandit staring at the arrow tip mere inches away from his face. Perspiration gathers on his forehead and Lilia can see fear in his eyes.

Suddenly, the bandit ceases moving and Ivy sighs behind me. So intent was Lilia's concentration that she didn't notice the Priestess invoking the power of her goddess.
"He shouldn't trouble us any further," Ivy explains. "The spell should last five minutes or so. We should further incapacitate him until Sherwood arrives."
"Very good," Lilia says as she steps away, allowing Ivy access to her patient. The Elf Maiden will stand back, but keep her eyes open for trouble.
Lilia's sharp hearing picks up Lord Validar off in the distance. "To your horses!", Validar shouts.
Daring a look behind her, Lilia spots an armored man rushing down the road leading east. He is traveling far faster then would be possible without the use of magic. Since she already has an arrow nocked, Lilia will fire at the rapidly moving target before he is out of sight. However, Lilia will not leave her post in guarding Lothar.

Post Continued:

After shattering his ebony-burning blade, Artur makes a break for it! He rushes past Validar and down the East road seemingly heading out of town.

Validar runs back to Havok and quickly mounts up. Holding his sword in one hand and the reigns in the other, Validar rides after Artur. Po follows a few moments later.

High overhead, Sherwood sees Artur making his break for it and conjures another barrage of Magic Missiles. Once more, five missiles streak forward and slam hard into Artur's right arm causing the armored man to cry out in pain. His left hand grasps his right arm as favoring it.

Laucian continues firing arrows as Artur rushes past. He aims and fires, his elven sight being able to easily pierce the darkness despite only slight illumination. The Elven Rangers aim is true and an arrow strikes Artur in the back. The impact knocks Artur off of his feet sending him forward to the ground. The warrior lands hard and does not rise back up.

This delay allows Validar and Po to ride up to Artur. The armored man has yet to stir.

Close by, Sherra tosses two more throwing daggers at the bandit across the street. The first one rips into the man's left arm, causing him to cry out in pain. Blood flows freely form the wound and the bandit uses his opposite hand to cover the wound. The bandit dropped his weapon in the process and reverses course, going back the way he came. The second dagger chases him into the darkness.

On the other side of the web, Kylie and Corley are engaging the mage Arkane. Incredibly, the mage begins to move his hands in odd, but fluid gestures. He completes his spell before either adventurer can launch another attack. Arkane seems to fade away a bit, making it harder to see him in the darkness.

Undaunted, Kylie fires two more arrows at Arkane. She is rewarded by removing two more of the mage's protective images. Only one more image remains.

Corley swings his massive sword and does seemingly connect with something solid. However, the force of the blade is suddenly stopped, as if it hit some unyielding surface! No blood is drawn.

Arkane is visibly moved by the attack and stumbles forward towards the web. Before the young adventurers startled eyes, Arkane enters the web and continues to pass through it! Arkane is lost from sight as he fades into the web blocking the street.

Further up the shore, Ivy adds more ropes to further bind Lothar. A rope is ran from a post on the dock to the bandit, effectively leashing him. Lilia watches with an arrow at the ready.

Hearing the commotion behind her, Lilia turns and spots Artur running. She takes aim and prepares to fire, but another shaft takes down Artur first. With her target down, Lilia releases the tension on her bow.

Chareos urges his mount on faster and reaches the Inn. He lost track of Artur, but looking to his left can see Validar and Po moving to surround the warrior. Noticing movement to his right, Chareos can see a Web has been erected between two buildings. A translucent man, along with what appears to be his exact duplicate, emerge from the web.

A bit further north, Grondar switches to his mace and enters the warehouse. The covered wagon sits just inside the large doors. No team is attached to the wagon at the present. As he moves forward trying to be quiet, Grondar can hear a faint noise coming from inside the wagon.

Corley:

Corley is now seriously annoyed by this puny mage! Somehow, in spite of the Silence around him, he cast some sort of spell! Finally Corley's massive blade actually strikes something solid but it fails to penetrate flesh and bone! Even when it hits, Corley is unable to harm his target.

Even more remarkable, the force of the blow does send the mage stumbling toward Lady Kylie's Web! Yes! Now if he gets held fast then this battle is over!

Corley's jaw drops in astonishment as the mage seemingly passes through the Web as if it wasn't there! He's getting away!

Turning, Corley begins to run towards Kylie. His intent is to circle around house B and continue the battle with the mage on the other side of the Web. Thankfully Grondar's magical silence prevents Kylie's fair ears from hearing his string of curses at the way this battle has played out.

Sherwood

Post by Sherwood »

Sherwood:

Watching from overhead, Sherwood is relieved with Artur appears to have finally been defeated. He can't tell if Artur is still alive or not. That'll be for Validar and the others to determine. With Artur out of the equation, Sherwood can focus his attention solely on Arkane.

Turning back around, Sherwood finds that the situation with the mage had taken an unexpected turn. Arkane steps harmlessly out of Kylie's Web on the side opposite of Corley. The pair has whittled him down to just one Image of himself.

"Hmmm… Must have cast Wraithform", Sherwood surmises. Sherwood has the same spell in his own spellbook and does make frequent use of it. The fact that Arkane is now 'not all there' indicates this to be true. Even more telling is that this spell does not require any vocalizations on the part of the caster, nullifying the effectiveness of the Silence around Corley. "How annoying."

Deciding enough is enough, Sherwood will cast Dispel Magic at the mage, attempting to remove all his active spells. That should make him much more docile!

Ivy:

Unaware of what is going on elsewhere, Ivy secures Lothar with more ropes. As the Priestess works, she becomes more and more aware of just how cold she is after taking that dip in the river. A place beside a warm fire would be most inviting right about now.

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden takes aim with her bow and prepares to fire on the fast moving target. However, someone beats her to the punch and a different arrow drops the target. Moments later, riders approached the downed armored man.

Satisfied that this threat has been neutralized, Lilia turns her attention back to Lothar. Ivy has tied him further and that should keep him in check. The Elf Maiden will keep an arrow drawn just in case. In the meantime she'll eye the items taken from Lothar to see if any are magical.

Sherra smiles a bit as it finally appears that these bandits are learning exactly how poorly they are faring. She will hurriedly cross the street after Validar and Po pass and scramble up a suitable tree. Sherra will have her bow at the ready and search for the injured bandit and keep an eye out for any other surprises. If she sees her target, or any others trying to be sneaky, she will dispatch them at range, otherwise she will prepare to add her own arrows into the body of the stubborn Arkane should Corley and the others for some reason not be able to drop him.

VALIDAR -

As Validar spurs on his noble steed and gives chase to the fleeing Artur, he witnesses with pleasure that Sherwood continued his attack on the Cult of Black Flame member. Five more magickal bolts slam into the retreating fighter, hitting him on the right side, and causing him to cry out in pain. Still the man does not fall. All things aside, this Artur is a very formidable opponent.

As Validar closes the distance, the noble warrior sees Artur stumble and fall to the ground. As he closes the final distance, Validar sees an arrow sticking from the man's back, that was not there a moment ago.

Validar is off his horse in one fluid movement and advances on the prone foe. He hears Po ride up a moment later and also dismount. "Take up a position opposite him, Po. I will see if this adversary is still breathing." Validar will close in cautiously, his sword and shield still ready.

Validar will either place his sword point at Artur's neck between his helmet and breastplate or if possible at the underarm between his breastplate and shoulder plate. He will give the man a slight increase in pressure, not to pierce the skin or injure, but to let him know that he will die if he continues to resist. "I will not fail to kill you simply by leaning on my weapon now, vile scum. While it would be advantageous to take you alive, I will not hesitate to end your existance now."

"Po, remove the man's helmet and see if he still breathes." Validar will take a moment to survey the surrounding area. He sees Sherra nearby and makes out the form of who must be Laucian in some of the illumination of the bandits' fires and Chareos a bit farther away. Grondar is nowhere to be seen and the others are also outside of his vision.

If Artur is still alive, but in need of medical attention, then he will turn to Sherra and say," Sherra, we have captured Artur and unfortunately, we need this slug alive. There are many questions to be answered by the existance of that Blackflame weapon. Do you know where Ivy is?"

If Artur is alive but not bleeding to death, or already dead, then Validar will continue to keep watch over the downed foe and guard this area against anyone who seeks to escape this way. "Death is not always permanent," the noble warrior says softly to himself.

Grondar:

Entering the warehouse and looking about, the interior is much as the thief-mage Kylie had described. To one side, he notes the barrels, which Kylie had said were full of oil. He'll have to be extra careful in their presence.

As he starts to circle the interior of the building in a direction away from the barrels, Grondar hears a noise apparently coming from within the wagon. So there is someone in here, after all! His senses did not deceive him, it seems. However, he does not know whether there might be others here or not, so caution is called for.

Continuing to survey his surroundings for any other dangers, Grondar circles toward the open rear of the wagon. He uses whatever crates and other cover may be present to help avoid being spotted by the person in the wagon. Hopefully, he will find a position where he can see who is inside and what they are doing, preferably from behind some cover.

To Battle, To Battle

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:

Despite the Silence in effect around him, the mage begins to cast a spell. She knows from her training that there are some few spells that require no words to be spoken, though she has yet to learn any herself. She prepares to fire, but the spell is completed before she has the opportunity to interrupt the casting, causing the wizardly group to become indistinct and ghostly. Still, her shots are rewarded with the departure of two more of the illusions. This leaves but one false mage and the true wizard, both seemingly intangible.

Corley presses the attack against the two remaining targets, and succeeds in striking the real mage. Strangely, his sword strikes and yet draws no blood - stopping in mid-swing as though striking a castle wall! Yet the mage does feel an effect; he stumbles into the waiting Web which Kylie had created but a short time ago. Even stranger still, the Web seems to impede the mage not at all! He continues on through as though air through the trees. Searching her memory quickly, Kylie finds that she has no idea what spell the mage used that would cause these effects.

Even while she ponders, Corley acts. The large warrior turns and thunders silently past, apparently attempting to circle the building behind them to reengage the mage on the other side.

As she can no longer see the mage clearly from here, it is clear that Kylie must find some other means of returning to the battle. Since there are no trees between the Web and the water, Kylie searches the side of the house with a practiced eye for a good means of climbing to the roof. If she can mount the building quickly, she will do so. Otherwise, she will follow Corley around to the other side.
________________________________________________
Essentially, if Kylie believes she can climb up to the roof in this round, she will. I want her to be in position to fire next round, if Arkane hasn't already been subdued. If it will take longer than one round she'll opt not to.

Dead or alive?

Post by Chareos »

Chareos

He digs his heels into his horse's side urging it forward. Chareos slows to a stop as he loses the others in the darkness near the inn. He scans the area looking for the others. Laucian is not to far away ,as well as the forms of Validar an Po and a downed figure can be seen further along. Seeing no need to head towards them he continues looking around.
As his field of vision moves to the right, he sees a Web spanning the gap between the Inn and a house with several occupants inside. As he looks to make out the detail on the faces within the web, two translucent forms emerge from the web!
He begins to contemplate which spell might have been used to cause such a result or if it isnt a spell and just undead. Much to his thinking he can not recall which. Not being one to find out If it is friend or foe he will being to cast magic missile at the transparent forms.(one missile at each form)

Laucian

Laucian knocks an arrow and begins to lead Artur flees. He lets loose his first arrow and it sails over his targets head. He quickly knocks another and takes aim just as five bolts of energy slam into Artur's right arm. Laucian watches as the the man moves to hold his arm as he cries out in pain.
He draws back on his bow and aims through the darkness. He lets loose, the arrow finds its target in just a few heartbeats. Artur is uprooted from the blow and lands face first in the dirt. Laucian lowers his bow and watches for a few moments, his target does not stir. Several thoughts run through the young elf's mind, Is he dead or just lying in wait for his life blood to spill from his veins.
Seeing none of the other clerics/ priests in the vicinity, Laucian will run at full speed towards Artur once there he will speak with the others. "Is he alive?" not waiting for an answer he will begin to see to the man's wound, If the man is dying he try to remove the arrow and than convert his Faerie Fire into Cure light wounds hopefully increasing the time he has to live until one of the better healers can get to him. If the man is dead he will close the man's eyes and say a silent prayer.
