New Frontiers #116 – 11/21/571 – Mother Boelle's Funeral & Adventurers Gather

11/20/571:

The long and eventful day finally came to an end.  The Civil War began, and enemy armies were on the move.  The King and Dame Sharl were rescued from Athenos.  Duke Relon put out a call for adventurers to gather at Castle Elcadan to aid in defense.  The Diabolus Molentis was discovered: a Spell Engine made to counter demons and devils.  Jallarzi used the device to eliminate any such creatures in Elcadan.  Castle Elcadan was cleared of any danger and will be moved in to today as it has better defenses than the Sallavarian Estate.  The three vacant noble estates were also cleared and are being prepared to be used as a refuge for the Citizens of Elcadan.

The Blackhawk is taken to Alexandria to rescue Sir Alon Teramar and Sir Justin Moore.  It was a trap, but the Guardians were able to complete the rescue before any harm could come to them.  The King's Royal Guard were held there as well.  This group was commanded by Lord Andrel Rowan, Sir Corley's older brother. The Royal Guard swore their allegiance to the proper king.  Lady Argent teleported everyone back to the Sallavarian Estate.

Back in Elcadan, the Duke and Duchess of Streel treated many to a fine dinner at the Waterfall Inn.  There they question Jallarzi and Killian about their previously unknown relationship.  Sir Acerion got to spend some quiet time with Lady Ivy, as did the King and Dame Sharl.

There were more surprises for those who went on the rescue mission once they were back at the Sallavarian Estate.  Lady Argent attempted to retire for the evening only to find her double, Argent, was already there.  The two got into a loud argument and Jallarzi exiled them to the kitchen.  Before she could retire for the evening, Sir Corley asked Jallarzi if she could rescue Lady Vera Ardel like she had done earlier for the King.  She could and together they did.  They return with a traumatized Lady Ardel in a short amount of time.  Vera was exhausted from the ordeal and fell asleep quickly.  Sir Corley, after removing his armor, stood by her side all night.

11/21/571:

A new day dawns, presenting new challenges.  The majority of the Guardians are staying at the Sallavarian Estate.  Only Sir Acerion and Lady Ivy are not present.  Seemingly they both stayed in Elcadan overnight as they were last seen walking away from the Waterfall Inn.  Lady Jocasta Demendria, Sir Acerion's Squire, also did not return.  However, when Sir Acerion does go to leave the Temple of Hieroneous, he will find Squire Demendria waiting there for him.  She took a room at a nearby inn for the evening.

The biggest event for the morning is the funeral for Mother Boelle, the former High Priestess of Azrella.  She was a mother figure for both Elspeth and Ivy and helped many others, including, Duchess Lysandra when she was a teenager.  After lunch, it is expected that the adventurers will start gathering at Castle Elcadan.  After the morning meal, the staff and families at the Sallavarian Estate are going to be evacuated by way of the Blackhawk.  Sherra and Serena will be asked to pilot the ship to the castle to make the move easier.  There is a private dock on the north side of the castle that can be used.

Mother Boelle's Funeral:

The ceremony starts at the Azrellan Temple at mid-morning.  Prayers are offered and songs are sung in her honor.  Lady Lyonessa performs a special hymn of the Azrellan faith in her own unique style.  Her sister, Myveria, assists in playing the flute and adding background vocals.  After the ceremony is complete, Mother Boelle's body is loaded onto a wagon to begin her final journey in the mortal world.  A pair of horses pulls the wagon slowly through town at a pace easy for those on foot to maintain pace.  A small crowd gathered along the path as Mother Boelle touched many lives in Elcadan.  An honor guard of Heironeous, Helm, Tymora, Mortidus and Mystra Priests and acolytes line the path leading away from the Azrellan Temple.

The funeral procession starts in Old Town and takes the High Road out of Elcadan City.  It turns south onto the Streel Road and into the hills just south of town.  Away from the main road is the place where Azrellans cremate their dead.  The body is solemnly placed and the fire wood added.  The wood is ignited and in time the body will be completely burned.

GM Notes:

Welcome to the next day!

The funeral starts around ten, so there is time in the morning to do other things.  Most people will be showing up at the funeral to honor Mother Boelle, but not everyone will make the trip to the cremation site.  Those who do not go along for the cremation can reach Castle Elcadan before the adventurers arrive.  If you do continue on to the cremation, you'll arrive after some of the adventurers.

Lady Ardel can be visited in the morning by those who wish to do so. Anyone seeking out Argent and Lady Argent is told that they are sleeping, having been up half the night.  But they should turn up later on at Castle Elcadan later on.  There are many other conversations and issues going on.

A reminder that we are keeping events focused on just one post instead of scattering them across multiple threads.  So this post will cover Mother Boelle's Funeral and the gathering of the adventures at the castle.  What happens later this evening will be covered in New Frontiers #117.  I will leave New Frontiers #115 open, so players can post for those events.

So now what?

Post by Ivy »

Ivy:

In the Azrellan Temple, Ivy sleeps and holds Sephie close to her.  She dreams or is it a forgotten memory?

It is daytime in the outdoors.  Ivy seems to be lying on the ground, as above her is what she guesses to be a man in armor.  He brandishes a sword pointed down at Ivy.  He speaks.  “Know this foul creature, that the Nobles of Cynalon will always rise up to strike vermin like you down!”  The sword rises up with a flourish in preparation to strike.  “I, Sir Validar Vanarkus, end your rampage here and now!”  The sword falls and Ivy screams.

“IVY!” Sephies cries out, shocking Ivy awake.  “You're hurting me!”

Ivy awakens with a start and realizes that her arms are still encircling Sephie.  But it is not a gentle grasp, but a tight and deadly embrace.  Ivy lets go and Sephie scrambles off.

“I'm so sorry...” Ivy starts to say, but Sephie doesn't appear to be listening as she keeps moving away.  “I didn't mean...”

A few of the other children wake up and can't help but stare at Ivy.  Feeling the uncomfortable weight of those stares, Ivy stands up and takes her blanket with her.  There has to be some place she can sleep and not hurt anyone.  Ivy settles down in the chapel.  Two benches become a makeshift bed and the blanket a pillow.  An uneasy sleep eventually comes.

Sometime later, Ivy awakens to the smell of freshly brewed tea.  She yawns and opens her eyes.  Looking up, Ivy could see Elspeth seated on the bench beside her, a cup of tea in her hand.

“I thought you could use something to warm you,” Elspeth tenderly says.  “It looks like you did not have a pleasant rest.”

“Not at all,” Ivy says as she sits up and stretches.  She accepts the tea and takes a sip.  “Sephie?”

“She'll be fine,” Elspeth answers.  “What happened?”

“I'm not really sure,” Ivy tried to explain.  “It must have been a bad dream.  I didn't want to hurt any of the others, so I came here.”

Elspeth accepts the explanation without comment.  “Come, let's get you cleaned up and something to eat.  The funeral is in a few hours, and we need to be ready for our guests.  You need to be ready for him.”

Ivy nodded in agreement.  The pair stood and then moved away from the chapel to prepare for what was to come.
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

The Adventurers Gather

Post by GM Mad »

The Adventurers Gather:

The activity at Castle Elcadan starts early.  Guards are already in place and the movement of people and goods from the Sallavarian Estate has begun.  The Blackhawk settles in at the small dock on the north side of the castle.  Entry into the lower level of the castle can be accessed there.  Work has begun on making the kitchen usable again.  The various bedrooms are being prepared for use.

Those who only attended Mother Boelle's funeral services at the Elcadan Temple, or who did not go at all, can be at the castle before the adventurers arrive.  Duke Relon put out the call for them to gather at the castle to help defend Elcadan. Those who attend the cremation will arrive after the adventurers.  Jallarzi attends the funeral, but not the cremation. She's returning to her estate to pick up the Argents.

The adventurers are asked to fill the grand hall on the first level of the castle.  The Guardians of Light, the Seekers, and the various familiar members of the nobility, royalty and local priesthoods are asked to either go to the back dining area or up to the second level of the castle.  The King's Herald announces the nobility and royalty as they arrive.

There used to be two adventuring bands of note based in Elcadan.  One was led by the late Drakkimor, but disbanded after his death. The other one was headed by another powerful mage by the name of Sorvani Caladon.  Sorvani is known to some of having participated in the reclamation of Gateway a few years back.  The core members of his group were all on hand when Gateway was liberated.

Sorvani himself was in his mid-twenties.  His black hair was tied back in a ponytail and matched his equally dark eyes.  While he was best known as a mage, he carried a sword and could handle himself in a fight.  Standing with Sorvani was a blond-haired woman wearing the robes of a Priestess of Mystra.  She was Sorvani's wife, Kayla.

Next to them was a human female with dark brown hair and eyes.  She was dressed like a woodsman and bore the holy symbol of Ehlonna.  Mara Korvin was her name and she too served at Gateway.  She wore expensive looking leather boots and pants, along with a leather vest.

A human male wearing leather armor was next.  Dallar was his name and he wore a rabbit foot around his neck. Such symbols of luck are known to be holy symbols for the Priests of Tymora, the Goddess of Luck.

The last of the core members of Sorvani's band was named Tevra.  She was a human female with red hair.  Her most notable feature was that small arcs of electricity play about the woman and her hair occasionally spikes as if she is being shocked. This gives the woman a wild look about her.  The other noteworthy thing was that her leather boots were of excellent craftsmanship and must have been very expensive.  Her trousers were leather as well.  A leather vest was worn over her light blue blouse.  The boots, pants and vest matched the ones Mara was wearing.  The only difference in the boots was that Tevra's rose up to her thighs and had high heels.  Mara's fell below her knees with a low heel.

After that, a more random selection of adventurers arrive.  Among them is a pair of bards.  One goes by the name Omni Tuens and he is known to Validar.  Omni joined the Seekers not long before Validar was summoned home.  The other is a tall, blond-haired woman dressed in a woodland outfit with a long brown cape topped with a feathered hat. Perched on her shoulder is an average-sized red owl and waddling behind her is a humongous badger.  Her name is Maroshe.

There is a pair of very attractive half-elves ladies that will draw a lot of attention.  They are Kaylin Tremayne, a bard and Priestess of Felix who is accompanied by her cats Geordi and T'ang.  Kaylin's partner is Gloriana, a mage and Priestess of Mystra.

The tallest person here is another woman who stands an incredible 6'9” in height!   She wears platemail armor and answers to the name Lady Shkai'ra Mek Kermak.  She hails from the distant Island of Konnazan further to the east in the Great Southern Sea.  The inhabitants of this island are known for their larger than normal size.  The island itself would be to the south of the old Keln Lands. Konnazanians are not all that common in Cynalon, but not rare either.

Other adventurers of note include a Paladin of Heironeous named Jordane and Rifkin, a half-elf wearing leather armor.  There are many more adventurers present, close to forty, but these are the most promising ones.

Around two in the afternoon, the King's Herald pounds his staff three times to get everyone's attention.  He cries out, “Presenting Lady Jallarzi Sallavarian and Lady Argent!”  The sound of someone clearing her throat is clearly heard and the herald adds, “And guest.”

The exasperated voice of Argent, one of them anyway, cries out, “Really?!”

GM Notes:

And that is the adventurers!

Sorvani and his associates were actually created to replace Drakkimor's band. Originally, it was Drakkimor's band that Argent joined on the mission to the Ruins of Demara's Castle.  But I used them in Corunglain and that turned out to be happening at the exact same time, so I had to use someone else.  Sorvani's group was created to fill that void.  When the Gateway game came along, it gave me the opportunity to use Sorvani and give him an origin story.  Once past the events of Gateway #1, Sorvani would be assigned to a different squad where he would meet the other members of his group.  Validar probably met Sorvani as he was Sir Alon's Squire during those events or, at the very least, knew of him.

Neither Kayla nor Dallar had yet to appear, while Mara Korvin was the scout in the group that Sir Justin Moore commanded.  Tevra was introduced back in the Borderlands game on Q-link.  She was a member of the original group Argent joined up with.  She is a lightning mage and enjoys using her powers to freak out others.

Omni Tuens was a member of the Seekers as noted.  I believe he also left the group when they merged with the Company of the Sword.  The other named adventurers were all players in the Borderlands game back on Q-link.  The more memorable ones at least.

The Argents return!  Chapter Nine of their tale ends with the carriage arriving at the castle.  Chapter four is being edited, and I'll have to do some rewriting for chapter five as that was the catching up on current events chapter.  Events have changed a great deal since I originally wrote that part last summer.

Now what?

The Argents

Post by Argent »

The Argents:

Jallarzi's carriage had delivered us to the front steps of Castle Elcadan.  We stepped out of the carriage and stretched after the long ride.  Jallarzi led the way up the steps.  We passed through the main entrance and into a large foyer.  Numerous guards were present but they let us pass.  Several did a double take upon seeing us but no one barred our path.  Being noticed never bothered either of us.  It was normal and, with two of us now, going to become even more common.

We passed through another set of doors and into a huge chamber.  The ceiling of this vast chamber was open all the way up to the third floor of the castle.  Walkways could be seen encircling the Grand Hall on the floors above.  A huge number of people were present, mostly chatting among themselves.

A staff rang out loudly as it pounded three times on the floor.  Lady Argent knew that this was the King's Herald.  He would be announcing Jallarzi and herself.  She loved this part.

“Presenting Lady Jallarzi Sallavarian and Lady Argent,” the Herald called out in a loud voice.

One name was noticeably absent.  Argent cleared her throat in agitation.  After all she was there too.

“And guest,” the Herald responded.

Lady Argent laughed and Argent cried out, “Really?!”

“You're not a noble, therefore you're not going to be treated like one,” Jallarzi bluntly noted.  “You promised to behave.”

“I know...”, Argent muttered in disappointment.

“There's a lot of people here,” Lady Argent observed as she took in the Grand Hall.  There were even more on the upper levels.  While the folks on the first floor were strangers to her, those up above she knew.  Spotting Chareos, Lady Agent would smile and wave at him.  “It's okay.  She's not going to hurt you.  It's safe to come down.”

“And there are some of the people that I know,” Argent spoke up.  “The adventurers I've been with lately.  Come on.”

While Jallarzi made her way to the upper levels of the Grand Hall, Argent led Lady Argent up to the Sorvani's adventuring band.  She introduced her double to Sorvani, Kayla, Mara, Dallar and Tevra.  “Hey guys,” Argent called out in greeting.  “I'd like to introduce you to my evil twin.”

“Hey!” Lady Argent objected.  “I'm no more evil than she is.”

“We didn't know that you had an identical twin,” Kayla noted in mild surprise.  “Is she a mage as well?”

“I am the Lady Argent of the Guardians of Light,” she explained. “I was there during the Siege of Corunglain.  And yes, I am an Invoker of no small power.”

“I've heard of you,” Tevra noted as a wave of electricity arced across her face.  “I simply assumed that it was a different Argent.”

“We're not different Argents,” Argent tried to explain.

“We're the same Argent,” Lady Argent added.  “One person made into two.”

“That is unique,” Sorvani observed.  “I have so many questions...”

“I came back to Elcadan to adventure,” Argent explained, “while she was supposed to be out east.”

“My situation changed, and I ended up back here,” Lady Argent reported.  “We surprised each other just last night.”

“So twin Invokers,” Mara noted.  “And you're both named Argent.  That's not confusing at all.”

“Its simple.  She's Argent, I'm the Lady Argent.  Say, you've all got those magical leather garments too?”  Lady Argent realized.  Both Mara and Tevra had the same items as Argent did.  Even the same fancy, adjustable leather boots that Lady Argent really wanted.

“Yes,” Tevra explained.  “There were enough for all of us women to have the boots and pants.  I just love them!”

“I bet you do,” Lady Argent said sarcastically.  Argent just laughed.

“Say what you want,” Argent noted, “the ladies of this adventuring band are stylishly dressed!”

“Say, is that Burant over there,” Lady Argent suggested, changing the subject.

“Where?”  Argent responded as she looked around in vain.  “I don't see him.”

Lady Argent started to walk off in the direction she thought she saw Burant in.  “I think it's him behind that tall armored woman.  I'm going to test out a hypothesis.”

“What hypothesis?”

“That he's still a wonderful kisser,” Lady Argent explained.

Argent processed that for a moment.  “NO! No you're not!  Don't even think of it!” She yelled as she took off after her double.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

The Duke & Duchess

Post by GM Mad »

The Duke & Duchess:

It is early morning at the Sallavarian Estate.  In the Master Suite, the new Duke and Duchess of Streel are getting ready to start their day.  Their dear friends, General Logan and his wife Lady Brenna, are visiting while Lysandra is preparing for the day to come.  Hilda was helping style the Duchess' hair this morning while the men were talking on the other side of the room.

“This used to be your sister's favorite style, Your Grace,” Hilda explained as she worked.  “I think I got it right.  It's been a long time.”

“It is exactly as I remembered it, Hilda,” Lysandra answered as she looked at the style from various angles in the mirror.  “Well done.”

Hilda was the long time personal assistant to the late Lady Jenae Sallavarian, Jallarzi's mother.  Lysandra knew Hilda from her time living at the Sallavarian Estate before she was married.  Hilda's daughter, Hanna, currently filled this role for Jallarzi.  Hilda herself now ran the entire household at the Sallavarian Estate.  Her task complete, Hilda bowed and made her way out of the suite.

“What can you tell me about this Lady Ardel that my son is captivated by?”  Lady Brenna wondered.  “I can see her obvious charms, but what is she really like?”

“Lady Ardel is quite lovely, as you noted,” Duchess Lysandra explained.  “I think she will make a good wife and a fine mother.  What she lacks is the ability to lead, to inspire others.  If she is to become Baroness of Ardelphia then she will have a lot of work to do.  She seems like a simple soul, one unaccustomed to the complexities of ruling.”

“Yet another young noble that needs tutoring,” Lady Brenna realized.  “Seems that you are picking up all these strays and have been tasked with turning them into something more refined.”

“More or less,” Lysandra agreed with a laugh.  “I see a lot of potential among the ladies here.  Those already of noble birth and those who were recently granted titles.  These young ladies will reshape our kingdom.”

The door to the suite opened once more and Lady Sallavarian swept into the room.  “Breakfast is ready, Your Grace,” she announced.

“Thank you Jallarzi,” Duke Relon stated as he and General Logan departed together.  “See you there, dear.”

“We'll be there shortly,” Duchess Lysandra announced.  “There is a stop I want to make first.  You will talk to Sir Alon?”

“I will handle it,” the Duke vowed.  With that, he was off.

The Duchess, Lady Brenna and Lady Sallavarian followed after the Duke a moment later. Trailing behind them a a short distance was Sir Belfor.  The procession stopped in front of the room used by the Argents.

“How are your apprentices doing?”  The Duchess inquired.

“The overnight staff did not report any more fighting,” Jallarzi reported.  “I think they made it through the night.  They were up very late, so I am letting them sleep in.  I'll come back after the funeral to check up on them.  Where is this stop that you mentioned?”

“I wish to check up on Lady Ardel,” Lysandra easily answered.

"My mother used to wear her hair that way," Jallarzi noted as the trip walked along.

"She did indeed," Duchess Lysandra answered with a grin.  "I wished to honor her today."

"I'd like to think she would appreciate that," Jallarzi suspected.

The Duke & the Knight

Post by GM Mad »

Duke Relon & Sir Alon:

Down in the dining area, breakfast was being served.  The King and many of his knights and advisors were present already.  Before eating, Duke Relon approached Sir Alon Teramar while General Logan reported to the King.

“Sir Alon?  A word if I may?”  The Duke called out.

“What can I do for you on this fine morning, Duke Relon?”  Sir Alon was the senior knight in the Order of the Golden Griffon.  His dark brown hair was beginning to lighten with age.  While the knight was remarkably fit, he was now into his late thirties.  Age showed around his eyes and lines on his face were beginning to form.

“It's about my daughter,” the Duke answered.

“Ah, so the Duchess has finally relented?”  The knight said in mild surprise.  “I was beginning to wonder if she ever would.”

“She has indeed, Sir Alon,” Duke Relon happily agreed.  “It is our wish to see Rachel become a squire to one of your knights, assuming that there are any openings.  We believe that her getting out into the world will be good for her.”

“There is one opening,” Sir Alon reported.  “Admittedly, I was content to not take on another squire before I retired to a simpler life, but I will make an exception for the Lady Rachel.  If she is anything like your son, it will be an interesting apprenticeship.”

“Thank you so much, Sir Alon,” Duke Relon said as he shook the knight's hand.  “This was more than we could have hoped for.”  The Duke turned and looked back at the dining area.  Lady Rachel had arrived just a moment ago.  “Rachel,” the Duke called out, getting his daughter's attention.  “A word please.”

Lady Rachel Vanarkus dashed over to the two older men.  “Good morning, father.  Sir Alon.”

“Sir Alon has graciously decided to take you on as a Squire,” the Duke explained.  “You now answer to him.”

A look of complete surprise came to Rachel's face.  She knew her mother had finally consented to allowing her to go out adventuring, but had not expected anything like this!  She could have been knocked over with a feather.

“Thank you, Sir Alon!” Lady Rachel stammered to say with a bow.  “Thank you for this opportunity!  I will not let you down!”

“That remains to be seen, Squire,” Sir Alon noted.  “As you said, this is an opportunity.  What you make of it is yours alone to shape.  You will work hard, harder than you ever have before.  Will you become a weapon like your brother, or be broken by the experience?  Only time will tell.”

“If Validar can do it, I can do it!”  Lady Rachel countered.

“Time will tell if you can live up to your bravado,” Sir Alon intoned.  “For now you need to make ready for the ride to come.  Prepare my horses and have my gear at the ready.  Also, bring your gear and horse as well.”

“Right away!”  With that, Lady Rachel started to dash off on her appointed tasks.

“Squire,” Sir Alon called out, drawing Rachel back to him.

“Sir Alon?”

“It's going to be a long day,” Sir Alon explained.  “Eat breakfast first.  You're going to need the energy.”

Lady Rachel bowed sheepishly and then made her way to the breakfast table, her exuberance having yet to fade.

The Duchess

Post by GM Mad »

The Duchess:

Jallarzi led the Duchess and Lady Brenna to the room where Lady Ardel was resting on the second floor of the Sallavarian Estate.  At one time, this portion of the house was used as servants' quarters.  Over time, homes were built for the staff elsewhere on the property as they started to have families of their own.  These rooms have become general-use rooms or guest rooms should the need arise.  Given the sheer number of guests currently at the Sallavarian Estate, nearly every room was occupied.

Outside the room, Sir Corley's Squires, Lord Bascar and Lord Moonshadow, stood on guard.  They bowed together and said “Good morning, Your Grace,” as the Duchess approached.

“Pleasant morning gentlemen,” the Duchess answered.  “Is Lady Ardel awake?”

“I believe so,” Squire Bascar reported.  He opened the door to the small room and stood aside.

Inside the small room, Lady Vera Ardel was sitting up in bed and was eating the morning meal.  Sir Corley was seated in a chair beside her bed.

“Your Grace!” Lady Ardel called out in surprise.  “I must apologize for my appearance.  I haven't had time to make myself presentable for an audience.”

“Duchess Lysandra,” Sir Corley said, as he stood and bowed.

“Not to worry, my dear,” the Duchess easily answered.  “I merely wished to check up on you and see how you are doing.  I shall not linger too long.”

“Your color is better this morning than it was last night,” Lady Brenna observed. “That's a good sign.”

“You are most kind, Lady Brenna,” Lady Ardel gratefully answered.

“How do you feel, Lady Ardel?”  The Duchess asked.

“Relieved,” Vera admitted.  “I was so scared, so afraid for three days that I barely slept.  I had no food or drink during that time.  I'm very weak and feel that I need to sleep some more.  Thank you for what you did for me, Lady Sallavarian.”

“It was my pleasure,” Jallarzi easily answered.  Looking towards Sir Corley, she added, “When Lady Ardel is ready to travel, you should bring her to the castle, Sir Corley.  My regular staff is evacuating the castle today, so after breakfast you'll be on your own here.”

“I understand,” Corley replied.  “I will allow the lady to sleep some more, and then I'll personally bring her to the castle this afternoon.”

Jallarzi nodded her understanding.

“I will make sure a chamber is prepared for Lady Ardel,” Duchess Lysandra spoke up.  “So that she has a comfortable place to complete her recovery.  For now, rest dear.  We'll talk later at Castle Elcadan.”

“Thank you, Your Grace,” Lady Ardel said, bowing her head.  “I look forward to the conversation.”

Having said her piece, Duchess Lysandra retraced her steps out of the small guest room.  She, along with Jallarzi and Lady Brenna, made their way down to the dining area on the first floor.

Before the Duchess could take a seat, Lady Rachel rushed up to her and gave her mother a hug.  “Thank you, mother!  Thank you so much!”

“I trust that an opening was available?”  Lysandra answered, mildly surprised.

“I've been accepted to be a squire by Sir Alon himself!” Lady Rachel proudly stated.

“Well done, Rachel” Lady Brenna complimented as she lightly patted the younger girl's shoulder.  “He'll teach you what you need to know to survive out there.”

“I am pleased that you are happy,” the Duchess said with a smile.  “You have much to live up to.  In time, you may not be thanking me at all.  But for now, let us enjoy one last breakfast before you depart on your grand adventure.”

“I'd like that, mom” Lady Rachel admitted.

The Funeral

Post by GM Mad »

The Funeral:

Later that morning, Jallarzi's carriage arrives outside the Temple of Azrella.  Duchess Vanarkus, Lady Sallavarian, Lady Allonica and Lady Rowan are among those who disembark.  The guests enter the temple and mingle for a time before the funeral begins.  The King himself and many knights are present, but not all stay for the ceremony.  The Temple's chapel is small and today's events are supposed to honor Mother Boelle.

Duchess Lysandra makes a point to speak to Mother Elspeth.  Lady Sallavarian accompanies her.

“My deepest condolences, Mother Elspeth,” the Duchess stated.

“Thank you, Your Grace,” Elspeth said with a bow.  “She will be missed by all.”

“I wanted to let you know,” Duchess Lysandra continued, “that if it becomes necessary to evacuate the children, bring them to the castle.  They will be safe there.”

“I appreciate the offer, but let us hope it does not come to that,” Mother Elspeth responded.

“My thoughts as well,” the Duchess replied.  “But I have also found it better to be prepared than caught unaware.”

Mother Elspeth nodded her thanks and looked grateful for the offer.

Duchess Lysandra casually moved through the crowd towards Lady Ivy and Sir Acerion.  The priestess looked much as she did yesterday, but now looked as if she had not slept enough.  The Duchess couldn't comprehend just what the young woman was going through, but clearly it affected her greatly.

She hugged Ivy for a moment without saying a word.  Sometimes words were not necessary.  “When you are ready to talk, you know where to find me,” the Duchess finally said before departing.

“Thank you, Your Grace,” Ivy managed to stammer out.

“Take care of her, Sir Acerion,” Lysandra offered as she stepped away.

A few moments after that, Crysania of Hieroneous stepped up to Sir Acerion and Lady Ivy.  “Well met,” she says to the pair.  “I've been informed about something that could be useful to Ivy here during my morning prayers.  One of the oldest trainers of Heironeous initiates is here in Elcadan.  I was told that he could be helpful for whatever issues you are dealing with.  Seek out Varian at the Hieroneous Temple at your convenience.”

“I will remember that, Priestess,” Ivy would answer a bit surprised.  “My thanks.”

After Crysania has moved off, Ivy will ask Sir Acerion,” Are you familiar with this Varian she spoke of?”

The funeral comes to an end and Duchess Lysandra will speak to Lady Lyonessa before she departs.  “A fine performance, my dear,” the Duchess compliments.  “Clearly, you and your sister have performed together before.”

“Many times, Your Grace,” Lyonessa answers.

“With our father being an accomplished bard, us playing together was common when we were growing up,” Myveria explains.  “I can compliment my sister, but she inherited most of the talent.”

“You both did very well,” the Duchess answers. "I am sure many burdened souls were lifted by your performance.  Good day, ladies.”

“Thank you, Your Grace,” Lyonessa states with a bow.

The ladies climb into the carriage once more.  Jallarzi simply teleports back to her estate to rouse the Argents.  Once its passengers are dropped off, the carriage will return to the Sallavarian Estate.

At the castle, the Duchess shows Lady Brenna around.  Lysandra explored the castle yesterday, figuring out what rooms would be where.   Off the Grand Hall of the castle was the audience hall to be used by the Duke and Duchess on official business.  Not far from this was a more relaxed sitting area that the Duchess intended to use for her private gatherings.  The chairs were arranged to suit her tastes.  A guest room was assigned to Lady Brenna and General Logan on the second floor of the castle.

When the adventurers start to arrive, the Duchess will be behind closed doors, but will emerge later on to catch up on matters of interest.

The Morning Funeral -

The long day turned into the long night and then became an even longer night as Corley and Jallarzi had rescued Lady Ardel from her kidnappers. Gabriella had stayed awhile to help with her recovery, until she was properly cared for and fully resting. Gabriella had wanted to talk further and even though Validar waited up for her return, the morning events would be upon them soon enough. They retired in each other's arms, their issue not completely resolved, but the full intent was well underway, just the same.

The morning came and they both stayed in bed as long as possible before needing to get ready for the funeral this morning. Validar had requested to have the morning meal brought to their room to save some time in the morning preparations. Validar once more wore a military outfit with his coat of arms emblazoned on his chest. His weapon, the Warblade, was sheathed at his side as usual. Gabriella wore a more traditional Cynalonian style dress in bright blue and put her hair up in a fancy updo with gilded hair combs, helping to keep her curls in place.

First they stopped by to check on Lady Ardel. Corley was still there and looked like he hadn't slept all night. Validar and Gabriella lingered for a short time; Gabriella sitting on the edge of Vera's bed and chatting. Validar was pleased to see that Hanna had taken care of their comfort, food had been brought for them already and Corley shared that the Duchess had told him to bring Vera to the castle soon.

Validar will walk Gabriella down to the waiting carriage and she travels to the Azrellan Temple with the Duchess, Lady Brenna and Jallarzi. Validar rides his horse alongside the carriage as it travels the distance between Jalarzi's estate and the temple. The Baron escorts his lady out of the carriage and the pair walk hand in hand into the foyer.

"It's a full congregation," Gabriella states as she looks at all the attendees, including the king and his consort.

"The Azrellan temple is well regarded by most for their duties," Validar says, voicing the obvious. "Mother Boelle was one of the forces that kept Elcadan from becoming even worse than it was. Many people owe her gratitude, including my mother, the Duchess."

"Yes," Gabriella agreed, "Lady Lysandra shared several stories about her teenage years."

The Baron and his betrothed followed along behind Duchess Lysandra, first offering condolences to Mother Elspeth. Lysandra had commented upon the offer the evacuate the children to Castle Elcadan. He added," With hope and a sound strategy, the enemy army will not get close to the city."

Lysandra stopped after moving through the crowd somewhat, acknowledging people here and there as she went. She then turned to the Baron. "What are your plans in regards to the ceremony, my son?"

"I intend to attend not only the ceremony here but also ride along to the cremation. While I may not be on Ivy's list of favorite people, Sir Acerion is a good friend and I will honor their loss as best I can." He looks toward Gabriella who gives his hand a firm squeeze of affirmation.

"Very good. I am required to help manage and prepare for the influx of adventurers coming to the castle with your father, the Duke," Lysandra says appreciatively. "It is good that there is official representation throughout the entirety of today's events honoring Mother Boelle."

"It is my honor to do so."

"I would ride with you, my love," Gabriella speaks up. "If it is not too much trouble." Lysandra looks on the pair with a satisficed smile. Apparently they had worked out the issues that were troubling them. Or at least were working on it. She moved on and approached Sir Acerion and Lady Ivy.

"Your presence is always welcome, sweetheart." A careful smile filled his face, despite the somber mood. "I would be most pleased to have you by my side for the rest of these services, my future Baroness."

The couple wait until there is a moment to speak to Acerion and Ivy. There are many who seek to offer their solace and sympathy. Eventually there is a moment and Validar and Gabriella approach. Validar placed his left hand on Acerion's shoulder and clasped wrists, while Gabriella took Ivy by the hands and gave her a comforting look.

"If you have need of anything," Validar looked first to Acerion and then nodded toward Ivy, "You have only to ask. It is our pleasure to honor the life of Mother Boelle and all that she has done, all that she has touched."

"The same goes for me," Gabriella quietly adds. "You don't have to face everything alone. That's what friends are for."

Validar and Gabriella stay on the outskirts of the ceremony as neither are true followers of Azrella. Lyonessa and Myveria's performance is both solemn and uplifting, as Lyonessa is quite the songstress. It is a lovely tribute as part of the overall ceremony. After Boelle's body is loaded onto the wagon, Validar will help Gabriella onto his horse and saddle up behind her. They follow the procession slowly near the rear.

Waiting until the fire is lit and the body is nearly consumed, the pair stand a respectful distance away. Before the fire dies, they discreetly mount up the horse again and slowly ride back. Once out of sight of those finishing up the cremation ceremony, Validar will pick up the pace and ride the two back to Elcadan castle.

Jallarzi Sallavarian:

Jallarzi leads the way into the grand hall of Castle Elcadan, followed by the Argents.  The lunch and then the carriage ride into town with them was interesting.  It answered some of Jallarzi's concerns, but not all of them.  But now, she really needed some time away from her apprentices.

Along the way, Jallarzi stopped to chat with Kaylin Tremayne and Gloriana.   The pair had been charged with the reclamation of an old Temple of Mystra to the north of the Great Swamp near the Orlane area.  It turns out that goblins had been massing there and were looking to attack the village.  But they stopped the assault along with the others in their group.  A few weeks back, Jallarzi helped repair some of the damaged walls using her magic.  The pair were in town to replenish supplies when they heard the call to come to Castle Elcadan.

Continuing on, Jallarzi takes the stairs to the upper floor where almost everyone else has gathered.  Spotting Lord Chareos and Burant, Lady Sallavarian steps up to them.

“They survived the night without killing each other,” Jallarzi reports. "Although, you'll probably want to keep them apart for the sake of your own sanity.  Good luck, gentlemen.”

Approaching the main group, Jallarzi will give a scouting report on the assembled adventurers below.  “There are a few beings below that I am unfamiliar with, but I know many of them.”

“That there is Sorvani Caladon,” Jallarzi says, pointing in his direction. "He leads a small adventuring band along with his wife, Kayla.  He's close to my skill when it comes to magic.  Dallar, Mara and Tevra round out his core group.  He routinely recruits others depending on the mission that they are undertaking.  It seems that the other Argent has completed several missions with them.  She trusts them and so do I.”

“The attractive half-eleven ladies are Kaylin and Gloriana.” Jallarzi reports. “They recovered an old Temple to Mystra to the west of the Orlane area, just north of the swamp.  They were in town for supplies to continue their mission.  The rest of their band is back at the temple keeping watch.  Kaylin is a Priestess of Felix, the Guardian of Lost Knowledge. The cats are essentially her intermediaries and don't be shocked if you hear them talk.”

“The lady with the owl and giant badger is named Maroshe.  She's actually a bard who is really good with animals.  Maroshe and the paladin over there, Jordane, lead a group who dealt with some issues near Elstrich a few weeks back.  I'm actually surprised that she's here.  Maroshe is more comfortable in the woods than in cities.”

“That brings us to the very tall lady in armor,” Jallarzi continues.“She hails from the Island of Konnazan to the southeast of Cynalon.  Shkai'ra Mek Kermak is her name, and she's a noble from her lands.  She's had several adventures around Elcadan.  A slaver from Zakhara captured her and several other women to take back to his home.  Shkai'ra escaped and defeated the slaver and freed the other captives.”

“In my opinion, those are the ones who have the most promise in helping out during this crisis,” Jallarzi concludes.

Having said her piece, Jallarzi steps up to Killian.  “In hindsight, I should have taken that rub down last night.  You would not have believed the evening I had!”

Chareos,
Waking up early, Chareos makes ready for the day. Putting on his Ring of Vampiric Regeneration and Ring of Free Action, he then dons his clothes and puts his bracers on along with his Boots of Feather Fall. Strapping his Frostbrand to his hip and Long tooth dagger, Chareos looks into the mirror at the image before him. “The remnants of my childhood are gone. I barely recognize the young man before me,” he says as he looks at the young view before him and takes up his staff and heads out for the day.

Taking up the reigns of his mount, Chareos heads to the funeral. He looks about and sees many people. Not one for funerals or for persons of faith, Chareos stays to the outskirts of the temple. Seeing the sheer amount of people, “To touch so many is a fruitful life, indeed." As the funeral procession moves past him, “May you find peace,” he says as he lowers his head in respect.

Seeing Lyonessa and her sister, Chareos will approach and offer: “Your performance was most beautiful. Your talents are truly a blessing to us all,” he says as he bows ever so slightly to the two songstresses.

He sees Lady Ivy and Lord Acerion, but makes no move to engage them with all the nobles about. Lord Validar and Lady Gabriella as well with in the throng of people. Becoming slightly uncomfortable Chareos excuses himself and makes his way back to his mount. Checking the tack, Chareos then mounts up and heads back to the Castle for the gathering.

Castle Elcadan comes into view and for a moment, Chareos stops his mount and merely gazes at the formidable structure. “The Guardians have come a long way since that night at the inn,” he says to himself more than to anyone as he brings his mount toward the stables.

Gathering up his gear, Chareos makes his way and hears various Lords and Ladies announced before him. Several moments later they announce him. And for a moment he realizes it was he that was called, as he walks forward his staff echoing off the stone. Making his way to the second floor, Chareos grabs a goblet of water and some refreshment and begins walking through the other guests.
Walking up to the pair, Chareos extends his arm. “Sorvani is it? I heard of you. Your exploits in Gateway proceed you. I am Lord Chareos of the Guardians of Light.”

He then hears the herald call the Argents, And he heads to the banister to watch.
Chareos chuckles and waves in return with a smile. “Thank you for your assurances! She is a fiery one.”

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Sir Acerion:

Having spent the night at the temple of Heironeous, Acerion sought out peace in the solitude and quiet, but his thoughts moved to Ivy and her decision. It would likely be one of the toughest things the paladin had to do in quite some time, but he vowed to ensure that her wishes were met. Whatever that might mean, it only mattered that Ivy came out on the other side of this healed.

At some point, Acerion slumbered, but dawn arrived quickly, and so he set about preparing for the day. Acquiring help for his armor was no struggle given he was at the temple. Ensuring everything was in order, he moved with those of the temple that would also be attending the funeral, at least until the point when he needed to meet Ivy and escort her the rest of the way.

There is no shortage of attendees, noble birth or commoner, gathering in and around the chapel. Acerion stands as Ivy's shield, though he knows he cannot offer the protection she most needs. Eventually the pair are approached, and words of support and expressions of empathy are given. In the spaces between is just silence between them as the paladin wishes not to disturb his lady.

Acerion bows and nods in response but otherwise remains stoic.

Acerion thinks about the name and recalls what he knows of Varian. "A bit yes," he answers, silently wondering what the notable trainer might have that could aid his lady. A question he would like to know the answer to but one that might be out of his reach once Ivy desires the solitude she needs.

"The same goes for me," Gabriella quietly adds. "You don't have to face everything alone. That's what friends are for."
Acerion returns the clasp firmly, attempting to convey his gratitude towards Validar in the gesture. Inclining his head slightly to catch Validar's eye, he gives a look meant to convey the two of them have things to discuss later, but this is not the venue for such conversations. Hoping his meaning was properly received, he smiles at Gabriella's words and thanks both of them silently.

Argent

Argent:

Lady Argent went rushing off towards what Argent believed to be Burant.  Both moved towards the large armored woman.  Argent caught up to Lady Argent near the tall warrior.

“Ha!”, Argent proclaimed.  “I told you that these boots made me faster!”

“Argent?”  Shkai'ra said in confusion as she looked down at the pair.  Her Konnazan accent was heavy.  “Argents?”

“Hi, Shkai'ra,” Argent casually answered as she looked upwards.  “How have you been?  Have any interesting missions since we ran into those ogres?”

“Nothing all that exciting,” Shkai'ra announced.  “I don't see your partner anywhere?”

“That's a long story,” Argent started to explain.  “Both Thorvid and my evil twin here.”

“You know her?” Lady Argent wondered.

“We helped out a caravan that was being bothered by ogres,” Argent quickly explained.  “It was between Demara's Ruins and Baltron's Beacon.”  Turning back to Shkai'ra, Argent started to tell the tall warrior what happened to Thorvid.

Lady Argent quickly became bored with their conversation and looked around. Spotting Chareos, she calls out to him and he responds.
Charoes wrote:Chareos chuckles and waves in return with a smile. “Thank you for your assurances! She is a fiery one.”
“Tell me about it!” Lady Argent calls out.  She looks around for a moment and then, once finding the stairs, advances on them, leaving Argent and Shkai'ra behind.

Once on the second floor, Lady Argent quickly advances on Chareos and gives him a hug.  “Thank you for being you,” she whispers as they embrace. "It was really brave trying to get in between me and her last night.  You're lucky you didn't lose an arm!”

“What's the plan for today?”  Lady Argent wonders.  “I still need to rememorize spells from yesterday.  We also promised to go back to the estate tonight to help protect it.  Jallarzi thinks that it could be attacked, and we're not going to let anything happen to it.  It's been our home for the last two years.”

Validar caught the look, and cocked his head slightly as he considered the meaning. He wasn't entirely sure what Sir Acerion was alluding to, but it was likely important. And now was not the time. The Baron nodded. "A later time, my friend." He then shared the paladin's smile at his fiancé and the pair stepped away toward the outer edges of the gathering.

Ivy:

With Elspeth's help, Ivy cleans up as best she can.  However, the redness around her eyes betrays her lack of restful sleep.  Before long, the preparations for the funeral are underway and guests are starting to arrive.  Ivy keeps watch near the main entrance, and finally she sees Sir Acerion and his fellow followers of Hieroneous approaching.  They embrace when able and Ivy will feel much better.

When the guests start to arrive for the service, Ivy and Acerion stand near the back.  Some of the guests will offer words of condolences and Ivy will just nod her thanks to them.  A worn staff doubling as a walking stick is carried by Ivy.  Some may note that it was this staff she wielded when she first appeared in Pyris in response to Sherwood's call.  Her Holy Mace is not to be seen.
Lysandra wrote:Duchess Lysandra casually moved through the crowd towards Lady Ivy and Sir Acerion.  The priestess looked much as she did yesterday, but now looked as if she had not slept enough.  The Duchess couldn't comprehend just what the young woman was going through, but clearly it affected her greatly.

“Well, what do you know about him?” Ivy says after a real answer did not seem to be coming.

“Thank you,” Ivy manages to respond, but says nothing more. Her nervousness is apparent.

Lyonessa and her sister perform near the end of the ceremony.  They take the traditional Azrellan hymn of goodbye to the departed and perform it in a more modern style.  The bard's skill is quite obvious, and she holds the audience in a swell of emotions.  Ivy will thank Lyonessa for her beautiful rendition.

A little while later, the body of Mother Boelle is loaded onto a wagon to begin its journey to the cremation site out of town.  Ivy is content to simply walk behind the wagon, but will ride if Acerion offers it.  The streets are lined with the citizens of Elcadan out to offer respect to the fallen.  The wagon moves slowly, allowing those on foot to keep pace.  Most who attended the funeral did not follow for the last part of this ceremony.

Once outside of town, it turns south on the Streel Road that leads all the way to Athenos on the coast.  Not far past the edge of the city, low hills begin to rise.  A side road leads into this area and the cremation site.  The crematorium has already been prepared.  Wood was put into place earlier this morning.  The body is lifted onto the metal grate over the fire.  The fuel is lit, and soon the body begins to burn.  Ivy has seen this all before, but this time it is very personal.

Time passes as the fire does its work and the crowd begins to thin out. Turning to Acerion, Ivy would say, “Thank you for accompanying me on this sad day.  My spirits have been lifted. I understand that you are needed elsewhere.  Please go and do what you need to do.  I will linger here a while longer and then make my way back into town.”

Assuming that Acerion complies, Ivy will remain until the fire has burned itself out.  “Goodbye, mother,” Ivy says as she turns and begins to her walk back to Elcadan.

Small Update

Post by GM Mad »

Updates:

As the day rolls on, more arrive at the castle. Lord Chareos and Burant ride up after a brief stop at the Azrellan Temple. Their horses are taken to the nearby stable after they dismount. As they advance inside, Lord Chareos is announced, but Burant is not.
Walking up to the pair, Chareos extends his arm. “Sorvani is it? I heard of you. Your exploits in Gateway proceed you. I am Lord Chareos of the Guardians of Light.”
“Words of your exploits are starting to reach my ears as well, Lord Chareos,” Sorvani easily states as they shake hands. Introductions are made to the rest of Sorvani and Kayla's adventuring band.

“I was a member of his last mission,” Burant adds. “That's where I met my Argent again.”

“Gateway seems like a long time ago now,” Sorvani continues. "We did our part on that mission. My friends and I only returned to town last night, but heard about the call for adventurers. I've only heard rumors, perhaps you can fill us in with what is going on here?”

A little after that, Sir Corley and his squires arrive. Once more he carries Lady Vera Ardel in his arms. Lady Brenna quickly directs him up to the second floor of the castle. There a room has been prepared for Lady Ardel to recover in. This chamber is much larger than the one back at the Sallavarian Estate. It's a regular guest room featuring a bed, several chairs and couches, a dressing area and a wardrobe for clothes storage. A desk, table and chairs round out the main attractions of the room. This chamber is right next door to the room assigned to General Logan and Lady Brenna.

GM Notes:

Varian is known as a long-time combat trainer for those of the Heironeous faith. Lesser known is his skill at helping those he trains control themselves in battle from being either too aggressive or too passive.

XP's

Post by GM Mad »

It's only been about 17 years since I last did XP's, so XP's have been updated!

I spent Lyonessa's points and she gained levels in both of her classes. Chareos has a lot of points available and could gain a level as a Fighter should he so choose to.

They are listed in your sheets in the usual spot.

Ivy:

After the cremation, Ivy starts to walk back to town using her staff for support.  The weather is sunny, but there is an unmistakable chill in the air on this late fall day.  The Streel Road is reached and Ivy walks alongside of it towards Elcadan.

It's not long before the city comes into sight.  The Southern Slums are the first to be seen, easily the worst part of the city.  The buildings here are uncomfortably close to each other and the spaces between them are almost like a maze.  It is said that only the worst of the worst live here.  Or, perhaps, only the most desperate.

The intersection with the High Road is reached, the main road into Elcadan itself.  Ivy pauses for a few moments, as if lost in thought. What she really needs right now is some sleep after the horrible night that she had.  But where?  Not the temple as she could never forgive herself is she hurt a child.  Was there an alternative?

An idea comes to her weary mind and Ivy starts to walk once more, further north along the Streel Road and away from Elcadan.  A guest room was prepared for her at Jallarzi's home, the Sallavarian Estate. There were no children there, so it should be a safe place to rest.

Time passes as Ivy walks along.  Ivy's mind wanders on her journey.  It does seem strange that Jallarzi and Elspeth were such close friends. They had very little in common.  One was an orphan, the other raised in noble splendor.  And yet they were good acquaintances.  Jallarzi did supply aid to the temple. Food and clothes for the children. She never drew attention to her donations, so clearly they were not just for show.  But still, it seemed like there was some great, but unknown, reason for their friendship.

Ivy is barely awake when she reaches the side road that leads to the Sallavarian Estate.  A few guards are noted patrolling the grounds, but they do not bother Ivy.  They have seen her before.  The main entrance is reached and Ivy goes inside.  She climbed the main stairs up to the second floor towards where her guest room was.  Or, rather, where she thought it was. The fact that hardly anyone was around went unnoticed by Ivy.

The door to what she thought was her guest room is opened and Ivy goes inside.  The door is closed behind her, and she drops her staff on the floor.  Climbing on the bed, Ivy closes her eyes and tries to sleep. Praying that her dreams from last night do not plague her slumber claims her.
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

Jallarzi:

Killian Thalamar, the local High Priest of Tymora, slowly rubbed Lady Sallavarian's shoulders.  He could feel the tenseness in her muscles as he skillfully worked.  Jallarzi told him what had transpired since they last saw each other.

“You did have a busy and stressful evening,” Killian noted understandingly.  “Two Argents?  One can be tough to take at times.”

While Killian himself didn't spend much time around Jallarzi's Apprentices, he did hear stories about them.  He was the Lady Sallavarian's confidant when she needed to talk about something.

“Tell me about it,” Jallarzi agreed. "We are making progress at least.   Hopefully they won't make a spectacle of themselves in public.”

“Thanks,” Jallarzi stated as Killian finished up his work.  “I really need that.”

“I'll tend to the rest of you once we have some privacy,” Killian vowed with a grin.

“I'm going to hold you to that,” Jallarzi vowed.

Taking his hand, she led Killian among those assembled on the upper levels of Castle Elcadan.  On the ground floor were the numerous adventurers who had answered the call.  Above them were the nobility, royalty and members of the Guardians of Light and the Seekers.

“I must confess that I am unaccustomed to the world you live in,” Killian noted as they made their way through the crowd. “Being with nobles and other important people.  You make it seem so normal.”

“Because I live in the light and not the shadow,” Jallarzi explained.  “You knew that if we were to be together, you would have to become accustomed to a completely different lifestyle.”

“I know,” Killian admitted. “But that always seemed so far away that it almost didn't seem real.  And now...”

“And now you're in the thick of it,” Jallarzi finished.  “For better or worse, my aunt and uncle changed the dynamic of our relationship forever.”

“That they did.”

“But, upon reflection, I think for the better,” Jallarzi continued. “Being outed allows us to spend more time together, not less.  Would we even be conversing now if they hadn't done what they did?”

“I see your point,” Killian agreed.  “No, we would probably be unhappy on opposite sides of the room.  Perhaps I can get used to this.”

Before Jallarzi could answer, King Victor the 8th stepped up with his consort, Dame Sharl Harlena.  “It seems the stories that we heard were true after all,” the King noted.  The King and Sharl had been in their own private dining room when Jallarzi and Killian's relationship was revealed.

“They were, Your Majesty,” Lady Sallavarian answered with a bow.  “May I present my consort, High Priest Killian Thalamar.”

“Funny, I thought you were my consort,” Killian jested with a broad smile as he also bowed to the King.

“This is a good thing,” the King noted. “So many, seemingly happy, couples assembled here.  After this unfortunate war is finally over, I can foresee many weddings to follow.”

“And many children not long after that,” Dame Sharl noted.

“Indeed,” the King continued.  “Securing our next generation of nobility and royalty.  Cynalon's future is in good hands.”

“When called upon, I will do my part, Your Majesty,” Killian slyly answered.  “You can count on that.”

The two couples shared a laugh and then drifted apart once more.

Jallarzi led the way to the door of a nearby guest room.  Standing on either side of it was Sir Corley's two squires.  Clearly, this had to be the chamber that Lady Vera Ardel had been relocated to.

“Who is this now?”  Killian wondered.

“Lady Vera Ardel was rescued last night,” Jallarzi explained. “I told Sir Corley to bring her to the castle this morning.  Those are his squires, so clearly he followed my instructions.”

“I am unfamiliar with this Lady Ardel,” Killian admitted.  “This is your world after all.”

“She is the surviving heir to the Barony of Ardelphia.  Vera's clothes were essentially destroyed from her ordeal.  While we do not share similar body types, she is as tall as I am.  I brought some of my old dresses so she would have something to wear.”

“Most generous of you,” Killian nodded approvingly.

The door to the chamber opened, and the pair stepped inside.  Sir Corley had finally fallen asleep on the couch close to the bed.  Lady Ardel was sitting on the edge of her bed.  It appeared that she had woken up just a short time ago.

“Lady Sallavarian!” Lady Ardel noted in surprise.  “I was not expecting to see you so soon.”

“Forgive the interruption, Lady Ardel. How are you feeling?”  Jallarzi inquired.

“I feel rested,” Vera explained.  “A little bit hungry.”

“A late lunch should be served shortly,” Jallarzi answered.

“That would be wonderful,” Vera responded.

“I won't keep you for long,” Lady Sallavarian stated.  “The clothes you were taken in were essentially destroyed and were beyond repair.  Since you are about as tall as I am, I thought perhaps one of my dresses would suit your needs temporarily.”

Vera's face brightened up upon hearing that.  “Thank you, Lady Sallavarian!  That is most kind of you.”

Jallarzi pulled several dresses from her personal Bag of Holding and laid them out on the back of a nearby chair.

“So who is your quiet friend?”  Lady Ardel inquired.

“Oh him?  This is the High Priest of Tymora here in Elcadan, Killian Thalamar.”

“A pleasure to meet you, Lady Ardel.”

“He is my consort,” Jallarzi explained further with a wide smile on her face.

“I see,” Vera answered with an intrigued look on her face.

“I'm never going to hear the end of that one,” Killian noted. “There are worse fates, I suppose.

Argent:

As her conversation with Shkai'ra was wrapping up, Argent became aware that her evil 'noble' twin had wandered off.  Argent looked around nervously, but could not see her double anywhere.  What was she up to now?  She better not be going after Burant!

“Typical," Argent muttered under her breath.  “She gets bored when she's not the center of attention!”

However, not far away in the crowd Argent did see Burant talking to Sorvani and Kayla.  Weaving her way through the assemblage, Argent made her way back near the entrance to this large chamber where her most recent adventuring band was talking.

“Hello again,” Argent called out to Burant once she was close enough.

“There you are,” Burant responded excitedly.  “I thought I saw you from overhead, both of you actually, but when I came down here I couldn't find you.”

“It is easy to get lost in a large crowd like this,” Argent noted.  “Can we talk in private?”

“Sure.” Burant took Argent's hand.  He said his goodbyes to Sorvani and the pair moved towards the edge of the Grand Hall.  Stairs leading up were not far away.  The pair moved partway up the stairs, enough to have a measure of privacy.  “Will this do?”

“Nicely,” Argent purred.  She took a step up and turned to face Burant.  This way, Argent could look at Burant eye to eye.  Reaching out, Argent put her arms around Burant's neck. He responded by putting his arms around her waist.  “Sorry about what happened last night. I lost control of myself and the situation just got out of hand.”

“I was more surprised than anything,” Burant admitted.  “But I did get to spend the evening with Chareos, excuse me, Lord Chareos.  He explained what happened to you.  Both of you.”

“Good, then no need to tread over old ground,” Argent replied.

Leaning forward, Argent moved to kiss Burant.  He was surprised at first, but quickly went along with it.  Their lips touched and Burant drew Argent closer and into his body; his left hand moved to softly cradle the back of her head.

“You still have the touch,” Argent cooed once their lips parted.  “You're still a great kisser.”

“Thanks,” Burant offered, a smile gracing his features.  “You're pretty good yourself.”

“Still the charmer,” Argent countered, alluding to the first kiss they shared almost two years ago, back in Gateway.  They had kissed and seemed very interested in each other, but at that time both were just apprentices and didn't want to cause undo attention in Lord Sharadin's home.

“We're not apprentices anymore,” Burant happily noted.

“No, we're not,” Argent laughed.  Their brief encounter two years ago ended with Argent stating that they would not be apprentices forever. That at some point they could be together again.  Argent had been with other men during those two years, a few she even really cared about, like Crandor, but it always came back to what could have been with Burant.  While he was not large and powerful, he was intelligent and handsome enough to hold Argent's interest.

Burant stared into Argent's eyes. “So about us...,” he finally managed.

“I think we're still clearly interested in each other,” Argent rationalized.  “I'm all for trying this out, seeing if we work.”

“So soon after what happened to Thorvid?”

“That is a tricky topic.” Argent looked away for a moment at the thought of that painful memory.  “What I had with Thorvid was never going to last.  Sure, when I was a novice mage I sought out powerful men for protection.  I'm no longer a novice nor do I need that kind of protection.  What I do need is a man that I can talk to, who is my intellectual equal.  Thorvid could never fulfill that role.  I just never had the chance to tell him.”

“Okay then." Realization dawned on Burant's face.  “Let's see where this goes then.”

The two kissed more passionately this time, both wishing they were somewhere more private and not just in a stairwell in Castle Elcadan.  Finally, their lips parted once more.

“I am all in favor of continuing this most interesting conversation at a later date.” Argent smiled as she pulled away. “But this is neither the time nor the place.  I've heard that the King himself is here.”

“He is,” Burant confirmed.  “Lord Chareos walked up and talked to him like it was nothing!  I was nervous the whole time.”

“I would be too,” Argent agreed.

Taking each other's hand, the pair continued up the stairs and emerged on the balcony that ringed the lower area.  Doors to private chambers lined the east and west walls.  One of the doors on the east wall had two armored guards around it.

Argent looked around but found almost everyone up here a stranger to her, outside of Jallarzi, Killian and her evil twin.  The man she was talking to must have been this Lord Chareos she kept hearing about. Clearly, this was her double's world while Argent's was down on the ground floor.

That realization made Argent understand why her double didn't linger down below.  Those people down there were not her friends, they were up here. Argent now was the one who felt out of place.

The couple walked up to the balcony railing, but mostly stayed away from the crowd.  Argent turned her gaze to Chareos.  He didn't seem anything special at first glance.  Kind of average when it came to looks.  What did her double see in him?

“So you and Chareos were both Lord Sharadin's apprentices?”  Argent asked. “So you must have spent a lot of time with him. Tell me about him.  I'm just trying to figure out what she sees in him.”

“He's a nice guy, kind of quiet. He also had warrior training in addition to mage training.”

“I see,” Argent said.  “A warrior and a mage in one man. A nice combination. But still he doesn't seem all that powerful, as least from here.”

“He's acquired a lot of magic items since he went out adventuring,” Burant continued. “He told me that Mystra herself increased his intelligence and that he had a belt that gave him the strength of a giant.  His sword is magical as well.”

“She had her intelligence increase too.” Argent made a sour face at that thought. “She flaunts that and her noble title to me constantly.  Still, I think I can understand the root of the attraction.”

“Like I said, he's a good guy.”

Turning back to Burant, Argent added, “Well, that leaves you all for me then! But let's be clear about something.  She wears that ostentatious tiara and I have these fabulous boots.  Just don't go around kissing the wrong Argent!”

Chareos
Once on the second floor, Lady Argent quickly advances on Chareos and gives him a hug. “Thank you for being you,” she whispers as they embrace. "It was really brave trying to get in between me and her last night. You're lucky you didn't lose an arm!”
Returning the hug with a gentle but firm squeeze, Chareos smiles, “It is all I know how to be.” He whispers back as he smells her hair and gets poked slightly by her tiara.
“What's the plan for today?” Lady Argent wonders. “I still need to rememorize spells from yesterday. We also promised to go back to the estate tonight to help protect it. Jallarzi thinks that it could be attacked, and we're not going to let anything happen to it. It's been our home for the last two years."
Extending his arms he looks down at her, “I am not sure. I too need to rememorize my spells and perhaps try to learn some from you, if you are willing to share them.” He said evenly, “I did have a thought though. Considering our evening was interrupted yesterday, perhaps you would do the honor of accompanying me for dinner? I am sure we can find a nice inn or place to eat and enjoy the night, before we return to the mansion and defend it.”

Seeing Burant and leather booted Argent gazing upon him he can’t help but feel a little odd but quickly dismisses it as he turns back to Lady Argent. “Why do I feel like I am being measured?” he thinks to himself. “Burant and your sister seem happy. I hope they do well for each other.” Hoping that she does not get offended, “Last night while you were away, Burant was asking about you and us. Fear not I did not tell him much.”

With Sorvani
“Words of your exploits are starting to reach my ears as well, Lord Chareos,” Sorvani easily states as they shake hands. Introductions are made to the rest of Sorvani and Kayla's adventuring band.

“I was a member of his last mission,” Burant adds. “That's where I met my Argent again.”

“Gateway seems like a long time ago now,” Sorvani continues. "We did our part on that mission. My friends and I only returned to town last night, but heard about the call for adventurers. I've only heard rumors, perhaps you can fill us in with what is going on here?”
“ You honor me.” He says inclining his head in respect.
“He could not find a braver and steadfast companion.” He says with a smile as he pats Burant on the back. “ You will have to tell me of the tale.
“Sadly, I only know so much, but I will share what I can. We rescued Sir Alon Teramar and Sir Justin Moore. Unbeknownst to us, Lord Andrel Rowan and the royal guards were liberated from their captivity as well.” He said, taking a sip of his drink. “With Elcadan cleansed it now needs to be defended. I believe that is why the call went out, but I cannot be sure for certain. I am sure they will tell us soon.”

Lady Argent:

On the upper level of Castle Elcadan, the Lady Argent has caught up to Lord Chareos.  They embrace.
Lord Chareos wrote:Returning the hug with a gentle but firm squeeze, Chareos smiles, “It is all I know how to be.” He whispers back as he smells her hair and gets poked slightly by her tiara.
Lady Argent doesn't say anything and is content to enjoy the closeness.
Lord Chareos wrote:Extending his arms, he looks down at her, “I am not sure. I too need to rememorize my spells and perhaps try to learn some from you, if you are willing to share them.” He said evenly.
“Of course, I'll share my spells with you,” Lady Argent easily responds.  “My books are always open for you.  As I recall, you wanted to learn Wall of Force.  That settles it then, later this evening, we'll go back to the estate.  We can learn and study and be there in case there is trouble.”
Lord Chareos wrote:“I did have a thought though. Considering our evening was interrupted yesterday, perhaps you would do the honor of accompanying me for dinner? I am sure we can find a nice inn or place to eat and enjoy the night, before we return to the mansion and defend it.”
“That's a wonderful idea!” Argent replies excitedly.  “I just know the place too.  When I was an apprentice, we would come in town to celebrate milestones in our training.  Mine, Kharyna's and Kylie's training, that is. Jallarzi took us to the Waterfall Inn in New Town.  The food is amazing!”
Lord Chareos wrote:Seeing Burant and leather-booted Argent gazing upon him, he can’t help but feel a little odd but quickly dismisses it as he turns back to Lady Argent. “Why do I feel like I am being measured?” he thinks to himself. “Burant and your sister seem happy. I hope they do well for each other.”
“Oh?”  Lady Argent says in surprise.  Looking around, she can see the two of them on this level, not all that far away but slightly behind Lady Argent.  There, Burant and Argent were holding hands and apparently studying us.  Lady Argent looks at them for a few beats and then turns her gaze back to Lord Chareos.

“Only time will tell if they work out or not,” Lady Argent easily offered.  “They deserve to be happy, just like us.”
Lord Chareos wrote:Hoping that she does not get offended, “Last night, while you were away, Burant was asking about you and us. Fear not, I did not tell him much.”
“There's nothing to worry about," Lady Argent casually answers. "He was simply trying to learn more about me, or rather, her.  I would imagine that right now she's grilling him about you.  Trying to figure out what I see in you.  I say let them wonder.”

With that, Lady Argent stands on her toes and kisses Lord Chareos passionately in a manner sure to annoy her double.

After their lips part, Lady Argent will add, “I met Burant about two years ago when I was trying to become an apprentice to Lord Sharadin.  You were away on an errand when this happened and this was before I was beside myself.  Anyway, Burant and I quickly became infatuated with each other, and we ended up kissing.  But given the circumstances, nothing else came of it.  I left the next morning on my journey to become Jallarzi's Apprentice.  That was the last time I saw Burant.”

“Later on, our accident happened, and we went down separate paths.  Hers led to Burant, mine to you. From the looks of it, they are seeing if they can have a relationship.  For me, it's a 'what could have been' situation.  I do still have some feelings for Burant, but they pale in comparison to what I feel for you.  You have nothing to worry about.”

Taking Chareos' hand, the pair walked off.  “Let's find Validar and see what is going on.”  Spotting the Baron not too far away with Lady Allonica by his side, the pair advanced in that direction.

“Good afternoon, Baron, Lady Allonica,” Lady Argent calls out. “What are our plans for today?  We had some plans of our own and wanted to see where we were needed.  We both need to relearn our spent spells and planned on spending the evening at the Sallavarian Estate.  I promised Jallarzi that I would help defend her home should it be attacked.  It's been my home for the last few years as well.  What else is going on?”
