TechTank (Episode 13)

Post by GM Fang »

With information from their Mon Calamarian contact Lanni indicating where Sinasu the Hutt may be hiding out after the attack on GreenTop, the team attempts to locate him. Even with directions, finding TechTank is difficult. They cannot fly directly to the point indicated on a map. They must fly their ship or speeder into a sprawling water recycling and treatment complex covering several square kilometers. They must find their way through enormous pipework, with pipes up to three meters in diameter, clouds of steam from venting pipes, and other obstructions.

Ymira fires up the Archelon and is soon off. Approaching TechTank's location. she realizes it lies in the heart of a massive water treatment and recycling station. A web of giant pipework crisscrosses several square kilometers, connecting tanks with filtration machinery and more. Some pipes are several meters in diameter, and most of the visible tanks are hundreds of meters wide. The flight path looks to take the ship deep into the tangled mess of pipes, venting steam, and confined spaces.

Ymira, with help from Roona in the co-pilot position deftly flies through all the dangers and obstructions, with only a slight contact with one of the pipes. Zavi goes to work on making sure the systems are all still working normally.

Once near the Tech Tank coordinates, the ship's path leads to a massive maintenance access point large enough to fly a ship into, straight down into the ground. However. it is blocked by an enormous metal hatch. The team discusses ways to bypass the hatch, including explosives, but decide against it. Ymira lands the ship nearby and Xander steps out to try and access the controls.

Xander links his computer relay from the ship directly into a maintenance connection. It takes several minutes for him to gain access to the computer system and once he does, he searches for the program to access the maintenance hatch. Finally he is successful and the huge hatch begins to open the security rods retract and the metal grate pivots upward to allow access to the water treatment center. Xander's computer sensors pick up a few nearby vehicles and R5-D12 informs him of their nearby proximity. When he tries to send out a contact message the two unidentified entities turn course away from the Archelon.

Ymira takes flight once more and directs the light freighter down the hole. Her incoming flight vector is slightly off and she bounces lightly off the far side of the access tunnel. Zavi says that's more work for him.

The shaft descends 500 meters below ground and opens into an enormous water storage tank. The ship descends into a wide open, cavernous space. It is obviously an enormous metal tank around two kilometers across. Aging, dim lights hang from the gently arcing ceiling. The water's dark surface is about 100 meters from the top of the tank. About a kilometer away, you see a cluster of bright lights and machinery on a huge platform in the center of the tank. Through the middle of the platform is a large shaft that appears to run from the top of the tank to the bottom. The platform is about a meter above water level. There are wide, clear areas separated by parked speeder bikes, metal sheds, and makeshift accommodations.

The platform is about 100 meters in diameter. Much of it is flat and open, and there is more than enough room to land the ship. The structure is obviously stout. Maintenance sheds, tents, and repurposed cargo containers are the heart of TechTank, and cluster around the central shaft. The shaft is mostly superstructure, with a mechanical drive that raises and lowers the platform with the surface of the water. Turbo lifts, pipes, and conduit fill out the remaining space.

Not long after the ship touches down, a door on a nearby cargo container opens. A metallic blue 3-PO protocol droid emerges and walks stiffly towards the Archelon. It stops near the main hatch and waves. It turns up its voice synthesizer and loudly yells, "Greetings. I am TT-3PO, TechTank customer relations. Please, if you would be so kind as to come down, I can discuss your service needs in detail and at a much more civilized volume."

With the presence of TT-3P0, the team opens up the cargo ramp and heads down to the TechTank platform. The protocol droid reacts as if everything is fine. When asked about the rest of the TechTank employees, the droid indicates that they will be along shortly and it asks several questions about what business the ship has here.

Eventually they mention that they have a delivery for Sinasu and that with GreenTop damaged they received information from Lanni to bring the delivery here. When asked if Sinasu was here, the droid acted as if it were confused by the question.

What the team didn't know was that Tennom, the Bothan who ran this operation, and Sinasu watched via concealed cameras and sensors from a nearby cargo container-turned office and command post. It doesn't take long for Sinasu to recognize the team, but he wonders how they found him and whose side they're on. Sinasu and Tennom direct the droid to pursue this line of questioning. Unfortunately the team was also trying to be evasive and so would not mention the dragons directly. It became a verbal game of innuendo and implied messages.

Eventually the reference to the dragons was made and the droid instructed the team to bring the crates out of the cargo hold. TT-3P0 inspected the controls and sent a silent message to the Hutt. Sinasu came out on a specially modified repulsor sled followed by Tennom. They quickly inspected the crates more thoroughly and Sinasu seemed quite pleased. The team was told to move the crates toward one of the cargo containers and Tennom offered some repairs or supplies for the ship at a reduced cost. Someone mentions the proposed turncoat Pon and Sinasu angrily sets a guard near the tent where the recovering Twi'lek lay.

Everything seemed like it was a perfect ending to a slightly challenging delivery job. And then the blaster fire started.

Before the team has a chance to complete their transactions and depart, Cordol's bounty hunters arrive on the scene. The first Indication is when a tech runs up to Tennom and Sinasu with a data pad and starts screaming about the sensors at the hatch and lifts being tripped. Several unexpected alrspeeders are inbound. As the techs scramble to their defensive positions, Sinasu berates the team for their incompetence in being followed. He starts to head for his hiding position, his repulsorsled moving at high speed.

Moments later, a large turbolift in the central shaft opens up, and a half-dozen armored bounty hunters fly out, firing at everyone except Sinasu. They have strict orders to capture the Hutt, preferably unharmed. Sinasu realizes they are outgunned and that the best way out is via the Archelon.

Sinasu turns towards the ship, yelling for the team to get the dragons back on board.

The bounty hunters attack as Sinasu rushes his repulsor sled toward the Archelon. Tor Cordol is a master hunter and a name know throughout the Hutt space region. His deadly shot nearly takes down the first of the team, knocking Irdis to the ground. He pops his medpac to recover before he succumbs to the wound. Then staggers over to the crates and tries to get them back into the cargo hold. By this point the platform has erupted in a maze of blaster fire. The techs are engaging the hunters who came down the turbo lift and the three other hunters use their jet packs to try and get better firing angles on the team who are land-bound. Xander manages to take one of the speeder out with the dual-laser mount of the Archelon.

As the battle rages, Ymira, Zavi and Roona also take serious hits from Tor, each one pushing them to edge of consciousness. Meanwhile, Sinasu's sled suddenly goes veering off towards the edge of the platform. Pon can be seen with a remote in his hand gloating toward Sinasu. At the same time, the platform has started to sink slower towards the water level of the tank.

As the battle continued, the platform bgan to drop below the water level. Tennom managed to hit one of the bounty hunters with a missile which obliterated the enemy flyer. Xander made the attempt to hack Pon's data pad and the struggled back and forth trying to each control the sled. It was a quickly ended struggle when Pon was dropped by blaster fire. At this point, the attack was breaking off. Tor took to flight having taken several hits on his battle armor and was in need of healing. The remaining speeder picked up some of the attackers and techs broke off on speeder bikes as the platform continued to sink.

The team managed to get the crates back onto the ship and Sinasu soon joined and they were off. The remaining speeder sought to give chase but was also blasted out of the sky and bodies and debris splashed into the water. Sinasu recommends they go to Spaceport 27, a small spaceport on Nal Hutta. Amidst the sound of sirens and red lights blaring throughout the pipe works, the Archelon carefully picked its way along as it tried to emerge to safety. A moment after clearing the network, an alarm went off on the control panel. R5 beeped a series of concerned noises and Xander informed everyone that they were being pursued by two CloakShape starfighters!
