Thick-Skinned (Postlude)

Post by GM Fang »

The party brings the glitter stim cargo to Bargos during the night. Bargos will take care of the cargo; he has a shuttle that will take it to his yacht. He will immediately congratulate them and offer them a fine selection of drinks while he attends to business, setting up the sale of it to Narrta in the morning. He will try to sell as little of it as possible to pay his debts, he knows that the rest can help him with other investments. As they celebrate, Bargos will even offer to order entertainment if the team would care for that indulgence.

The Hutt thinks the plan of planting goods on Thakba is a beautiful way to get back at him for screwing over Bargos and turning the mine into a death trap for the team. Thakba has his brand new freighter which he has spent loads of money on, tens of millions of credits. Bargos has a load of very, very illegal goods that the Empire would love to catch someone with. Bargos will agree that if the team discretely deliver some of the cargo into the cargo bay of Thakba’s new freighter Bargos would increase their pay. Thakba’s freighter is currently docked in the planet based ship yards and is completely ready to make its maiden voyage. There is a patrol that goes around the doors to the dockyards, but a couple of delivery uniforms and a forged cargo order can easily gain access to load the cargo into the freighter.

Xander and Roona are chosen to break in. Roona manages to steal delivery uniforms. Skipping the need for a cargo order, Xander manages to hack his way past a few doors. They slip the cargo into the freighter and disappear into the night.

The next day the group is on hand to watch the festivities at the launch party. Bargos will arrive early and will schmoose with the other Hutts. The group will notice that there are two Hutts exchanging rather heated words just off from the elevated platform. They will notice that the larger of the Hutts has definitely some problem with the smaller of the Hutts whom is trying to play whatever it is as nothing. The smaller one will take the
elevated platform and a protocol droid will begin speaking giving the opening announcement.

"Greetings fellow Hutts and investors. Today marks a great day in the Honorable Thakba Besadii Diori’s continued wealth. He has cleverly invested in his markets and has earned the respect of his peers by building the massive freighter Iridescent Pearl. It will be launching for its maiden voyage to the core worlds where it will bring profits to all its investors and most to the Great Thakba Besadii Diori. Please join in the celebration of this momentous occasion."

Thakba will then take over, thanking himself and his glorious and clever mind and explaining the numbers and profitability of the freighter. The other one (whom must be Narrta) sits back on his lounge area and looks on with thinly veiled contempt for Thakba. Bargos, whom looks very out of place amongst these very hefty and thick Hutts, with a subtle smile is typing away on a data pad. He gives the data pad to Genko who will give it to Ymira to deliver to Narrta the Hutt. As the smartly dressed Mirialan approaches, she will be stopped by guards who grab the data pad, scan it, and then give it to Narrta without talking.

Narrta will at first read it with widening eyes, then have an almost violent glare that he shoots at Bargos, whom is smiling contently to himself, seemingly enjoying Thakba’s speech. He will then go back to reading and get a wicked smile looking from Bargos to Thakba and then back to the pad, where he presses a few buttons then hands it back to his guards to hand to Ymira. She quickly walks back, trying to discreetly see what the datapad might indicate. Ymira gives it back to Genko whom flies it up to Bargos. Bargos will smile and nod to Narrta and put away the datapad and listen contently to Thakba whom seems to be slightly going on from a speech about his great abilities at negotiations and powerful connections, to his ability to pay well and how he will soon be above anyone who doesn`t join his growing trading empire.

Bargos then gives Genko a signal and Genko moves away and makes a call. In a few short minutes the Iridescent Pearl can be seen leaving its port. It is not particularly beautiful, it is however remarkable as it is a very large freighter that can actually fly down to a planet and back, opening up many markets.

Within a few minutes of its lumbering voyage to the sky a series of flashing lights is following it up from the planets docks. The local authorities have been alerted to the possible escape of a vessel carrying illicit cargo. The next sound everyone hears is of a squadron of TIE fighters flying close over head as they zoom to assist the local authorities in apprehending the freighter. Amongst the gasps and rumblings from the crowd the PA system picks up and you can hear the voice of an Imperial officer addressing Thakba. “Thakba Besadii Diori, this is imperial customs frigate captain Rycc Infontan. Your freighter has been impounded for a thorough inspection due to the suspicion of smuggling of illicit cargo. Return to port immediately and submit to the Imperial officers waiting for you at the dock. This is your only warning."

The event is now over; all of the Hutts want to avoid Imperial entanglement as much as possible; they depart with little fuss as Thakba now tends to his bruised ego and finances, as he calculates how much it will cost him to get out of this mess. Bargos gloats heavily in Huttese as the groups retreat to their private transports. Narrta seems to be in a better mood and discusses future business arrangements with Bargos and schedules a meeting with Bargos shortly in the future. Bargos is in the best mood any of the group has ever seen him before. He invites the group to meet him in three days for their reward and payment.

Several days pass for the quartet and they spend some of their hard earned money just existing. Then they are called into the mansion of Bargos the Hutt. He seems a much happier Hutt. There are more guards now, and there are even a few local business men or associates hanging around the lobby. Bargos himself looks better, still thin and lithe he has a new, better fitting patch over his eye and newly remodeled office. The room smells of spice and drinks as a servant girl in a sheer outfit tends to the Hutt and the team.

Roona asks about Thakba, "Choy che copa, Thakba-Huttuk? Meendeeya dopa-meeky slimo naga azalus."

Bargos laughs a deep laugh and will let them know that between Narrta and the deal Bargos made with him, Thakba should be shoveling poodoo for years before he is a threat. Bargos will let them know that Thakba will probably be having a Hutt firesale and then disappearing shortly. If Narrta doesn`t get him then the other Hutts that invested will.

C3-P9 will provide the group with a datapad. Ymira takes it and looks at the information on it. Bargos has indicated that the profit from the endeavor after all costs is 80,000 credits. The team has earned their 15% fee and there is a button to transmit 12,000 credits to the group's account. Ymira happily pushes the button and hands it back to the protocol droid. Bargos once more thanks them for their success in helping get revenge on the Hutt who set them up with a deathtrap excursion.

Bargos then calls Zavi and Ymira over to stand before him. "Nigoola niboba. Poonoo mo gootu. Hodruda mee jewz ku. Grancha creeda!"

C3-P9 will state that Bargos is particularly pleased at the successful business in helping eliminate a competitor. As a reward he is going to reduce each of your debts to him by a significant amount. (Zavi and Ymira each have 5 points of Obligation removed.)

The team is invited to stay to celebrate some more and indulge in food, drink or other vices. Roona will make a point at some part of the stay to open up a sabbac game with some of the individuals here. When the team leaves, Genko will see them out. He comments that the group has now been noticed by some of the Hutt Cartel in enacting the take down of Thrakba. Whether those connections will prove to be for good or ill remains to be seen, and likely some of both.

Soon after the meeting with Bargos, the team is invited to yet another meeting. This time with their other financier, Tebora the Muun. And even more surprising, the quartet has been invited to Tebora's own estate. For the most part, Tebora's residence on Tatooine on the outskirts of Mos Espa blends in amongst the other buildings around it. Standing two stories in height, it has plain pourstone walls. It might be cleaner than others, and those who know to look for them can see signs of armed guards and a security system, but it is otherwise unremarkable.

Once inside however is another matter altogether. At the entry they are met by a Toydarian, who introduces himself as Jetopa. A Besalisk guard stands nearby, looking gruff This open area is flanked by two sets of stairs leading to the building's upper level. It also boasts two pillars that support the rooms above. A hallway leads to other rooms on the ground floor, while double doors open into the courtyard. Jetopa speaks quietly to the group. "Been doing some Hutt work lately, no?"

He opens the door to the courtyard and flutters inside. The focal point of this entire estate is the courtyard in the center of the structure. It is filled with an impressive amount of greenery, the primary way in which Tebora shows off his wealth and influence. Indeed, this is where the Muun prefers to entertain important guests, especially those who are uncomfortable in Tatooine's dry environment. Periodically a pump system sprays the area with mist from the four corners of the inside walls. It is particularly refreshing, except perhaps for Zavi.

Tebora will greet the team from the open balcony surrounding the courtyard. Tebora the Muun looks gangly, awkward and too refined to survive on Tatooine. However, he seems to have done quite well for himself so far. "Jetopa, please have our guests join me in the dining room. I will be there momentarily."

The Toydarian snaps his fingers twice and two young females, one human and one pantoran, suddenly appear from almost nowhere. They bow and lead the group through the courtyard, out a door on the left hand wall and down a corridor. Jetopa observes from behind. The team enters a very large room. This room is filled with a long table surrounded by chairs, all made from expensive greel-wood. The servant girls bid the group to sit, two on each side and Jetopa joins once everyone is seated. "What can we get you to drink?" Jetopa offers. Orders in hand the human and pantoran servants quickly disappear out of the room once more.

Tebora enters a few moments later, typing away on a data pad, before he catches himself and sets in on the table. He takes his spot at the head of the table and extends his hands in a welcoming gesture. "Thank you for joining me here today. I foresee a great amount of business opportunities with your group of enterprising individuals. Those who stay loyal to me enjoy my continued favors, if you catch my meaning. My boy, Xander there, can vouch for my trustworthiness and fairness in all business deals. Why your whole group must now be aware of my generosity, as many clients may have simply pocketed the extra credits you saved me on the recent cargo transfer and left you with a paltry percentage. You wouldn't find the sort of deal that I offered from a Hutt." He glances at Jetopa as he stresses the last word.

The servants bring in any ordered refreshments and another human servant will arrive as well. She places additional glasses before them and fills each with a small amount of a deep amber colored liquid. Once completed, Tebora will raise his own glass and breath in the aroma. "Whyren's Reserve," the Muun states wistfully. "One of the very best whiskeys in the galaxy. Please join me in a toast to the growth of our business relations!"

Seeing how it would be rude to insult your host by not joining the toast, everyone takes at least a sip, while some may enjoy the rich, smooth and full-bodied almost nutty taste. "After dinner, and some discussions on upcoming activities, I will provide you with the codes to access your new ship, the Archelon. She arrived just last evening and has been made ready for you to outfit and stock. But first we will partake in the quite pleasing ritual of food that my esteemed cook, Siruli, has created. Siruli is a Askajian who enjoys nothing more than learning about new delicacies from around the world, practicing preparing them, and then sharing the food with myself and my guests. I trust this will be a culinary delight."

There are several bowls of exotic fruits available to snack upon before the first course is served. It is some form of roasted meat, along with colo claw fish eggs. As the group begins the meal, observant guests notice Jetopa glancing nervously at his datapad. As the second course is brought out, the Toydarian is typing away on the datapad. He gives Tebora a concerned look and Tebora will quite subtly indicate their guests with a slight side bob of his head. Jetopa frowns briefly but lets it go.

After the meal ends, Tebora turns all business. You can see that this is what he really loves, finance and mathematics. "I have just about completed negotiations with the Cobalt Front on Sullust to purchase the crates that you received from Hagt Baht recently. I will need you to take them to Sullust and complete the transaction. However I recommend that your crew take the GHTroc out on a test voyage first, to get the feel of the ship and its capabilities. A "blue milk run" I believe they are called in your field," Tebora says with an awkward smile.

"I will forward all the required information to you, but in a nutshell, you will be simply making a delivery to Aadlan Myder of the Cobalt Laborers' Reformation Front in Pinyumb. It should be a simple matter," Tebora pauses. "And if there are complications, then I am confident of your team's ability to handle said complications."

"Sullusta goola," Roona says, her snout wrinkling. "Hotsa Azalus. Lava. Gas," she explains. She then places her arm parallel and waves her other hand underneath. "Unubunko."

"Yes," Tebora agrees. "Sullust is a bit more harsh than even our 'fair' Tatooine. It is perhaps a bit barren on the surface. Oh and quite toxic. But the native population lives underground in technologically advanced subterranean cities that are highly regarded for their beauty. They make quite sufficient starships there. Not as famous as the Mon Calamari, but quite good, nonetheless."

"If you have further questions, they should all be answered when the rest of the information is provided to you. Also Jetopa will provide you with the access codes to the Archelon. Oh and Xander, I highly recommend getting rid of that annoying corpulent Rodian that you have been slumming for. I thank you all for joining me for this meeting and must now bid you goodbye." Tebora will take his leave and Jetopa will see the team out of the compound. On the way out, Ymira notices a couple of the Besalisk guards carrying an unconscious or dead Aqualish around the corner of the estate. Jetopa will quickly usher your group in the opposite direction and wish you a good day.

C3-P9 will state that Bargos is particularly pleased at the successful business in helping eliminate a competitor. As a reward he is going to reduce each of your debts to him by a significant amount. (Zavi and Ymira each have 5 points of Obligation removed.)
Zavi is mildly surprised that his obligation has been reduced. It feels like a long time coming but he is not completely out yet, so tries not to get to excited about it. He will graciously thank the Hutt for his generosity in the manner that seems to please Bargos.
Zavi will eat and drink his fill. Past experience has shown him what he can stomach and what he cannot. Free food and drink is free food and drink. Afterwards he will wander around for a bit. Gambling and drugs hold no interest for him. But perhaps some companionship would be nice. He is doubtful that there is another squib here, but with all the new employees, who knows?

Later we are summoned by Tebora. Seems a lot of people want us now. Zavi can't decide if that is good or bad. Probably both.
“Obligations,” Zavi mutters in response, but won't elaborate beyond that.

Zavi will pass on ordering any drinks for now, but will try the whiskey. He'll gulp it down without showing whether he liked it or not.

Zavi will try each of the offered food. Again, free food is free food. He'll eat his fill of what is offered.
After the meal ends, Tebora turns all business. You can see that this is what he really loves, finance and mathematics. "I have just about completed negotiations with the Cobalt Front on Sullust to purchase the crates that you received from Hagt Baht recently. A "blue milk run" I believe they are called in your field," Tebora says with an awkward smile.
Zavi assumed that this was not a social call, but rather business. At least business is getting us free food and drink! Zavi lets Ymira do the talking when business comes up. The squib can't help but notice all the odd things going on, as if there are other matters that Tebora is dealing with. If he has enemies then that means we'll have enemies too.

“We go see ship next?” Zavi asks of the group once the wining and dining are done.

During this down time, Zavi will seek medical attention to heal his wound.

Genko explains that the blood price on Zavi's somewhat incompetent sibling has been lowered. Zavi bows towards Bargos and the Hutt acknowledges the gesture with a wave of his meaty fist.

There are various groupings in Bargos' mansion. Some are engaged in various gambling games. Some are delving into legal, and likely illegal imbibings. Others are conducting business. As expected, Zavi does not find another Squib currently in the mansion. He does however come across a female individual sitting apart from all of the others. She is wearing laminate armor that is rather old or else very well worn.

The woman is sitting off by herself doing what looks like some repairs to her armor. When Zavi looks closer, he sees that she is actually working on repairs inside her arm! The woman mutters and curses to herself as she seems to be unsuccessfully completing her task. Cybernetics, Zavi muses.

Zavi's visit to a bacta tank will take several hours. His wound was on par with Kel's and a bit worse than either Ymira's or Roona's. It will cost him 200cr. I split out some personal credits to the group: 500 cr each.

"Problems?" Zavi asks, mildly curious. "Zavi Mechanic. Zavi fix?"
The woman looks up, slightly startled. She cocks her helmeted head for a moment, as she considers Zavi's offer. Wordlessly, she slowly offers her right arm toward the Squib mechanic. Zavi pulls out some tools and also takes the spanner that she was trying to use and puts it to work. After getting her to not block his sight, as she tries to watch what he's doing, Zavi can see that the actuator that makes her arm bend is not getting enough power. It looks like she's seen recent combat and taken a little damage from a laser blast. He reroutes the lines and replaces a power coupling. Leaning back, Zavi nods to her and she flexes her arm a time or two. It appears that was the problem and a job that required more than one hand to complete.

The woman removes her helmet once Zavi has completed his repairs. She has a cat-like face, with short, yellowish fur. Her eyes are small and vertically pupiled. A flat nose and wide mouth show large carnivore teeth. Her face looks hard and feral for a moment then softens. She takes Zavi's head in her hands and presses her forehead against his, making a quick rumbling noise in her throat. A moment later, a look of surprise or embarrassment crosses her feline features.

"Apologizing. Sometimes Syalla forget talk." She speaks slowly, as if considering her words and she rolls her R's almost like a low growl. "My people often communicates... cyberrrrrnetically. Syalla have been away from them so long now, everything quiet," she says, the last part somewhat wistfully. "Quiet not good. Arm good! Thank Zavi!" She flexes her arm and fingers several more times. She then gives him a light punch in the shoulder.

Zavi:

Zavi works quickly to solve the problem with the armored woman's cybernetic hand.

“Sometimes need two hands to fix one,” Zavi notes as he puts his tools away.

Zavi is mildly surprised when she removes her helmet and is covered in fur! But she is different fur covered race much difference than Zavi, something like a large cat. The next thing Zavi knows, she is holding his head in her hands and our foreheads touch. This is the way Squibs communicate with each other, relying on smells to say more than words. The move surprises Zavi. Perhaps her species has a similar way to speak. Zavi decides he likes the closeness.

“You do Hutt work?” Zavi inquires after the light punch to his shoulder.

Syalla:

The armored female watches closely, sometimes getting in the way a bit too much as she tries to see what Zavi is doing in repairing her forearm. Zavi reacts patiently as he maneuvers his way around the issue and gets the power coupling replaced and her wiring rerouted properly. Zavi notices that there is some kind of low-friction coating on the woman's armor, which makes it a little tougher to work on.

After Zavi finishes his work and closes up her cybernetic arm, she flexes it a few times to test it out. She nods in response after a moment.

Syalla listens as Zavi responds, cocking her head to the side. She nods knowingly in response. "Hutt work. Yes," Syalla answers. "Any work. Nar Shaddaa is born Syalla." She lowers her voice and looks around. "Syalla is Gank. Gank work for Hutts. Syalla work for Hutts. But Gank not like Syalla. Gank not work Syalla. Gank not speak Syalla." She frowns after saying this and replaces her helmet. "Syalla solo. Wanga." She takes a deep breath and sits up straighter. "Zavi work Hutts?"

Zavi nods his understanding. Syalla is an outcast among her own kind. The Squib does wonder what she did to get this treatment, but decides not to press the issue any further. Dishonor can be a sensitive issue as Zavi well knows.

“Zavi has obligations,” the Squib answers plainly. “Zavi work for others too if the job and credits are good.”

Syalla nods and says, "Syalla understand. Zavi help Syalla. If Syalla help Zavi, Zavi say. Syalla also obligations. Syalla cyberneticist. Mechanic. Fighter." She makes a fist and flexes her bicep. Syalla then shows you a large tube she carries on her back. "Syalla reverse engineer ion thruster. Now weapon, " she says proudly, almost purring as she shows it off.

Zavi looks closer. Apparently she's taken a small ion drive, possibly used for the propulsion of a one man fighter craft, and turned it into a hand-held weapon! The electrostatically charged protons are propelled out as a concussive force. It's already quite cumbersome and would need to be even bigger to do significant damage. But it would blow a droid halfway across a room and shut it down for a time. It also might shut down a speeder bike or something of that size. Apparently Syalla has her own version of boom boom.

“Zavi will remember,” Zavi says in regards to the notion of seeking Syalla for help at some point in the future.

The Squib is puzzled at first at what Syalla is trying to show him. Then he realizes that she took a propulsion system and changed into a weapon! Filled with interest, Zavi will pester Syalla on how she handled the various problems of making this unique weapon. Zavi nods approvingly at the improvised weapon.

Syalla -

Syalla nods her acceptance of this situation. She could use all the contacts for work available. Hutt work was readily available, but eventually everyone wanted more.

Syalla perks up at the discussion. "Must address charge / mass ratio. Must trade speed for power. Weapon charge slow but power strong." She points to a canister that attaches at the back end. "Gas enter here. Keep gas high pressure." She turns the weapon over, pointing to a button next to the trigger. "Gas release. Press first. Count to Cresh then pull trigger. Well, point target first." She pretends to aim at a droid going by.

"High pressure gas. Fast ion charge. Big propulsion. Here vent gas." She holds up a finger. "No put face. Painful. Gas vent counters propulsion. Gun stable. Heavy, cumbersome. But stable. Need weapon strap for support. Electrons heavy charge go out front. Electromagnetic ionization. Droids no like. Shields, sensors, all electronics no like. Shut down." Syalla taps the odd looking weapon fondly and shows it to Zavi once more to further inspect.
