Tales from the Past (Roona)

Post by GM Fang »

"Roona, can you hear that?"

Roona's antennae twitched as she strained to catch the faintest sound in the vast rocky sprawl of Ryloth. She was a Rodian, a good scout with plenty of talents, with hearing so sharp it could make a Tusken Raider's look dull. The two other figures beside her, a human named Kai and a hulking brute of a Wookiee called Grok, nodded in response. They had been traveling together for weeks now, a motley crew thrown together by fate or desperation—she wasn't quite sure which. Their mission was as clear as the air was dry: locate the rumored secret stash of weapons and resources that could shift the balance of power in this sector.

The sun blazed above, casting long shadows that danced upon the dunes as they approached the coordinates provided by their mysterious employer. The fourth member of their group, a sly-looking Twi'lek named Xara, had been quieter than usual. Roona had noticed her eyes darting back and forth, as if she was hiding something. The Rodian's instincts told her that Xara was more than just a fellow mercenary, something about Xara was off; she had the stench of the Black Sun on her—an operative for the notorious crime syndicate.

They reached the base of a rocky outcrop that looked like a giant, petrified beast. The wind howled through the ravines, carrying with it the faint scent of something metallic. It was a smell that could mean only one thing: tech. Roona signaled for the group to split up. Kai and Grok took the left flank, while she and Xara approached from the right. Her blaster was loose in its holster, her grip tightening as the suspicion grew heavier.

As they scaled the jagged rocks, Xara spoke into her comlink in hushed Basic, the words faint but clear enough for Roona's keen ears. "We're in position. They're right where the intel said they'd be."

Roona's heart sank. The Empire had been hunting for this stash for months. If Xara was selling them out to the highest bidder, it could mean the end of everything they'd worked for—and a swift end for them all. She had to act fast.

"Grok, Kai, hold up," she called into her own comlink. "I think we've got company."

The Wookiee's growl was her only reply, but she knew he heard. With Xara's back to her, she saw her chance. In one swift motion, she drew her blaster and fired. The shot rang out across the desert, echoing off the rocks. Xara spun around, surprise and anger flashing across her features before she crumpled to the ground, a smoking hole in her chest.

"What are you doing?" Kai's voice was urgent in her ear.

"Betray us," Roona said, her voice tight. "Empire."

"We can't trust anyone," Grok rumbled, his fur bristling.

They exchanged grim nods. The mission had just gotten a lot more complicated. They had to find the stash before the Empire did, or all of Ryloth would pay the price.

Roona led the way up the rock face, her nimble Rodian body moving with surprising agility. She knew the Empire would have tracked Xara's signal, so time was of the essence. As they reached the top, the landscape opened up before them: a sprawling complex of metal structures half-buried in the sand, surrounded by a sea of dunes. It was the kind of place that looked abandoned, but she knew better. The air hummed with the faint buzz of energy shields and the distant whine of droids at work.

They approached cautiously, blending into the shadows cast by the metal behemoths. Roona's eyes darted around, searching for any sign of movement. Suddenly, a red light flared to life in the distance, a warning siren piercing the silence. Xara's treachery had not gone unnoticed.

"Must move," Roona hissed, adrenaline spiking through her veins.

Kai and Grok nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. They split up again, Roona taking point. She moved swiftly, her blaster at the ready, as they weaved through the corroded corridors of the ancient compound. The air was stale, filled with the scent of dust and oil. The only sounds were their footsteps and the distant alarms, growing louder with every step.

As they reached the heart of the complex, they found themselves in a chamber filled with crates and containers, each stamped with the symbol of the Black Sun. Roona's stomach turned. Xara had been right; this was a Black Sun operation all along. But why leave the loot here? Unless it was a trap for someone else...

Her thoughts were interrupted by the unmistakable sound of blaster fire. Kai and Grok had found trouble. She sprinted towards the noise, her instincts honed from a lifetime of dodging danger on the lawless streets of Tatooine.

The chamber ahead was a maelstrom of chaos. Stormtroopers had breached the compound, their gleaming white armor stark against the rusty walls. Kai was pinned down, firing back with everything he had. Grok was in a frenzy, tearing through the soldiers with his bowcaster, roaring with every shot.

Roona took a deep breath, steeling herself. This was their chance to turn the tables. With Xara out of the picture, they had a shot at not just surviving, but coming out on top.

They had to fight their way through the stormtroopers, find the stash, and get off this rock before the Empire swarmed the place. It was going to be a close call, but Roona had faced worse odds before. And she wasn't about to let her newfound comrades down.

With a fierce battle cry, Roona leaped into the fray, her blaster blazing. The heat of the barrage washed over her, but she spent more time than she wanted in the desert, used to the unforgiving embrace of Tatooine's twin suns. She targeted the stormtroopers' weak spots—their eyes, the joints in their armor—picking them off with a precision that belied her small size.

The clang of metal and the sizzle of blaster fire filled the air as they fought back-to-back, a whirlwind of sand and chaos around them. The stormtroopers were disciplined, but they were no match for the raw instinct and ferocity of a Rodian scout and a Wookiee berserker. They fell, one by one, until the chamber was clear.

Panting, they took a moment to catch their breath. The air was thick with the smell of burnt circuitry and scorched plastoid. Kai's eyes were wild, his chest heaving beneath his armor. Grok bellowed in victory, pounding a fist against the nearest crate. Roona's antennae twitched again, picking up the faintest hint of something amidst the cacophony.

"Koona," she urged, her eyes narrowing. They followed her lead, deeper into the complex. The corridors grew narrower, the air cooler. The scent of the metallic tech grew stronger, and with it, the smell of something else: fear.

They found the stash in a chamber hidden behind a false wall. It was a treasure trove of weapons and gear, enough to arm a small rebellion. But it wasn't just the sight of the loot that sent a chill down Roona's spine—it was the figure standing before it, his hood thrown back to reveal the gleaming cybernetic eyes of an Imperial Inquisitor.

"You're too late," he sneered, his synthetic voice echoing through the chamber. "The Empire already knows everything."

Roona's stomach twisted. Had Xara been playing both sides? Or had the Inquisitor been one step ahead the whole time? Either way, they had to act fast.

"Chuba sa nobata bolla," she spat back, raising her blaster. They needed to keep the Inquisitor from leaving.

The Inquisitor's smile was cold, his eyes gleaming with malicious intent. "Then I suppose we'll just have to see how long you can hold out."

With that, he ignited his lightsaber, the crimson blade sizzling through the air. The fight was on.

Kai and Grok flanked Roona, their weapons ready. The Inquisitor was a force to be reckoned with, his blade a blur as he sliced through the air. But they had one advantage: the element of surprise. And they were fighting for their lives.

The battle was intense, the clang of metal against lightsaber a cacophony that filled the chamber. Roona's blaster sang a deadly melody, each shot a note of defiance against the Empire's relentless tune. Kai's quick reflexes and Grok's brute strength kept the Inquisitor on his toes, even as he danced around them, his blade leaving a trail of destruction.

But Roona knew they couldn't keep this up forever. They had to find a way to end this, and fast. Her eyes darted around the room, searching for an opening, a weakness. And then she saw it: a console, half-buried beneath a pile of debris. If they could disable the shields, they might have a chance to escape.

"Wateeba bata!" she shouted, her voice cutting through the din. They retreated, the Inquisitor giving chase, his blade a crimson shadow in the dim light.

As they reached the console, Roona dove behind it, her hands flying over the controls. The air around them crackled as the shields dropped. She could feel the heat of the Inquisitor's breath on her neck, his blade mere centimeters away. Then suddenly the room erupted in a series of explosions. Kai had tossed his pack of grenades further into the room and the resulting blast threw everyone to the ground.

"Shado ateema," she murmured into her comlink as she struggled to her feet, blood dripping from her forehead. She felt like her leg had been injured but that was not important now.

Kai and Grok nodded, their eyes on the prize. As the last of the shields flickered out, they made their move. The Inquisitor roared, but it was too late. They were already sprinting for the exit, a portion of the treasure of the Black Sun in their grasp.

The Inquisitor's lightsaber sizzled through the air as he lunged at them, but Roona was ready. She rolled to the side, her blaster firing in a controlled burst. The crimson blade clashed with the durasteel wall, sending sparks flying as she and her companions dashed for the exit. The corridors they had traversed earlier now seemed like a labyrinth designed to trap them, but the layout was etched into her mind.

They sprinted through the dusty halls, the echoes of their footsteps taunting the remaining pursuing stormtroopers. The Inquisitor's relentless chase grew closer, his blade a constant reminder of their mortality. Roona's heart pounded in her chest, each beat a staccato rhythm that matched the pulse of her weapon.

As they neared the surface, the door to their escape ramp slammed shut, sealed by an emergency lockdown. Roona skidded to a halt, her large dark eyes scanning the room for an alternative. There was no time for panic, only action. She spotted a ventilation shaft, its grate hanging loose.

"Unko!" she shouted, pointing to the narrow opening. Kai and Grok didn't hesitate, squeezing through the gap with surprising agility. Roona ducked and shimmied into the shaft, the cold metal scraping against the leather of her armored clothing. The Inquisitor's footsteps grew louder, his lightsaber slicing through the air like a crimson scythe.

The vent was a tight fit, even for a Rodian, but she pushed on, her muscles burning with effort. The heat grew stifling, the air thick with the scent of fear and determination. They crawled through the dark, twisting maze of ducts, the sound of their breaths amplified by the metal walls. The Inquisitor's angry shouts grew distant, muffled by the layers of metal and dust.

Finally, they emerged into the open air, the desert wind a sweet relief after the suffocating confines of the vent. They had made it to the top of the dune, the speeder bikes they had arrived on waiting for them below. They slid down the sandy incline ignoring their injuries, the adrenaline rushing through their veins as they leaped onto the bikes.

The engines roared to life, the sand parting before them like a sea of gold as they raced away from the compound. The Empire's shuttles were already descending, casting long shadows across the dunes. But they were faster, more nimble. They weaved through the desert, the wind tearing at their clothes and hair, the speeder bikes leaving contrails of dust in their wake.

The horizon grew closer, the promise of freedom within their grasp. But Roona's thoughts were elsewhere, on the betrayal of Xara and the unknown fate of their mission. The Empire knew they had a portion of the stash, and that meant their employer would be expecting a return on their investment. The game had just become more dangerous, the stakes higher than ever before.

They had to find a safe haven, to regroup and plan their next move. The desert was vast, but it was also unforgiving. They had to be smart, to outwit the Empire's forces that would surely be combing the sands for them.

As they disappeared over the next dune, the sun setting in a fiery embrace, Roona couldn't help but wonder if victory was truly theirs. The Empire was a hydra with many heads, and she had just chopped off one of its limbs. But she knew better than to think the beast was dead. No, it was only beginning to get angry. Fortunately the Empire didn't commit many resources to this part of the galaxy. Why was an Inquisitor here then? Something wasn't adding up.

Their speeder bikes grew smaller and smaller, swallowed by the desert. But the weight of their discovery was a beacon that could not be hidden. The Outer Rim was a chessboard, and they had just moved a piece that could topple warlords. The game was far from over, and their next move would be the most crucial of all.
