Rendezvous on Tatooine (Interlude)

Post by GM Fang »

On the return trip to Tatooine from the mission to the Oridium mining center on Gavos, the team discussed the dreaded upcoming meeting with Bargos and their smaller than expected monetary extraction. He could easily think they were trying to cheat him which might be deadly for some or all of them. Ymira asked Kel to come along and assist with the expected negotiation and Kel agreed for a fee.

Once the team landed back at Landing Bay Aurik in Mos Shuuta, they proceeded to Vl'Grax and a transport to Mos Espa, which Bargos had already procured. On the way, Xander received an interesting transmission from his Muun financier, Tebora.

Tebora has helped out Xander before with small jobs, taking a cut from his work to pay off the favor Xander owes the Muun. Tebora, despite being gangly and awkward, seemed far too refined to survive on Tatooine. There must be more to him than initially met the eye.

“Good day, my young henchman, “ the Muun began cordially. “I see you have returned from your trip to Gavos. I trust it went satisfactorily? Don’t be surprised that I know about this little endeavor. I do like to keep tabs on the activities around Mos Espa that might have repercussions for myself.” Tebora did not comment on what those repercussions might be however.

“Allow me to cut to the chase, as it were. We both know that you would like to get out from under the thumb of that rotund Rodian fool, Seedoneo. And it would free you up to do more important work for myself and my associates.” Tebora let the thought set in before continuing.

“I have a trivial deal nearing completion, a simple product exchange of some small value. I simply require you and your friends to acquire a means to transport several crates, meet with a ship in a remote location, in order to avoid any Imperial entanglements, exchange a credit chip, and bring said crates to a warehouse location which I indicate back in Mos Espa. Doing so will earn your team, say 2500 credits for your trouble. If you complete this satisfactorily, there is a much bigger and better paying job in your future.”

The team discussed the thought and decided that even with the cost of transportation that the credits would come in handy. They all had various needs for extra credits. Tebora indicated that they should be prepared for some detailed information regarding the job over the next few days.

Eventually, they arrived in Mos Espa and the dreaded meeting with Bargos. The droid, C3-P9, was waiting for them at the docking point of Vl'Grax's shuttle. Those who had not been to Bargos' mansion before are greeted by typical Hutt luxury. As you step into the mansion you find yourselves in an opulent lobby, decorated in luxurious silks and red velvet wall hangings. The floor is polished marble, though here and there you can see dirty trails left by a slithering Hutt, and the occasional puddle of Gamorrean drool. Two large Gamorrean guards stand at the far end of the room. They are armed with cumbersome vibro-axes and glare menacingly at you with their red, beady eyes.

A side door opens and Bargos' majordomo, Genko, flutters into the room. He is a wily Toydarian with pale blue skin and an extravagant mustache, borne aloft by a pair of constantly flapping wings.

'Ah, greetings. Bargos is expecting you, no? Please, follow me."

Zavi informs the others that Genko accompanies Bargos at all times. He has been a close counselor to Bargos for decades. After Bargos lost his left eye (and rumors say a portion of his brain) to the disruptor pistol of a would-be assassin, he started relying on the Toydarian to handle the day-to-day operations of his criminal organization. Genko is said to be a loyal follower, and as far as is known he makes every effort to protect Bargos and his interests. There did seem to be a lack of noticeable guards in the mansion however.

Genko leads you down a corridor decorated in the same sumptuous style as the reception area and flings open a pair of large double doors leading into Bargos' office. Inside the Hutt rises from his couch to greet you. Bargos is a rather odd-looking Hutt; he is long and lithe (relatively speaking) and exceptionally slimy. His skin is a pale green color, patterned with mottled bands of dark grey. You've heard that as a youth Bargos was nearly slain by an assassin armed with a disruptor pistol. As a result his left eye and much of the left side of his face have been badly maimed, twisted into a lumpy mass of gastropod scar tissue.

Behind Bargos' couch stand two more hulking Gamorreans and C3-P9. Bargos lifts both his arms in warm welcome and burbles out a string of rumbling Huttese, which the protocol droid translates for those who don't speak the language. "Konchee je moolee-rah?"

The droid says "The Mighty Bargos is asking if you have succeeded in your mission." Those who know Huttese understand that Bargos had much less elegantly asked simply, " Where's my money?"

Kel and Ymira used the materials they had copied from the mine and with sufficient flattery and a copious detailed description of everything that happened, including the miners promise to step up production, attempted to sway Bargos to accept their recovered payment. Bargos was furious. 87,000 was not 100,000! But as the team continued to present their case, the Hutt relented, perhaps more easily than it seemed he should.

Bargos slowly considered the situation, as he disgustingly downed a tree frog in one gulp. Bargos whispered something to Genko, who nodded cautiously, while staring at the team. Turning back, the Hutt smiled at the assembled group. It was more frightening than his angry face! "Foonta Bargon", the Hutt says with uncharacteristic warmth. "Nagoola moolee-rah. Oto chubah weeteebah flootah poonoo. Grancha poonoo. Mu moolee luto k'wanna!"

The protocol droid says that Bargos is satisfied with the arrangement and your success at the mines. He says that Bargos will graciously pay you 5% of the funds that were recovered and that he has an upcoming job for your group to assist him. Suddenly the downtrodden protagonists had gone from scrounging for credits to having two paying jobs, and promise of more. Were things actually looking up or was this more trouble facing them down the road?

Things were starting to look up for our intrepid band of ne'er do wells. An easy transport job from Xander's financier was just waiting for the details. And Bargos was surprisingly happy with the results of the mine visit, despite the destruction caused and the lower than demanded credit total. The Hutt had a job waiting for them as well. Things were looking up indeed.

The group was gathered together in Qexi’s, an absolute dive of a cantina filled with the dregs of the galaxy. Most of the current flock of customers mostly consist of Humans, though a number of Bothans, Rodians, and even a couple Trandoshans. It seemed that since this was a waiting time, the team figured that they might as well take advantage of it while they could.

Roona is off to one side, caught up in a sabbac game with several unscrupulous looking fringers. She seems to be on a bit of a winning streak and anyone paying attention can tell that the others are getting a little heated. Zavi and Xander trade stories about mechanical and computer feats, exaggerations increasing as the drinks come. Kel and Ymira have a quiet conversation about their upcoming plans and the potential of the team continuing to work together for everyone's benefit.

The quiet conversations are interrupted when a Human woman enters the cantina, and from what anyone can tell, she’s certainly not a local; her clothes, while a little roughed up, are of better quality than can usually be found in the local market. She takes a quick look around and then heads for where the four protagonists are currently sitting. As they regard her curiously, she puts a finger to her lips before glancing furtively across the room. After a few moments, she turns back to the heroes, slips into their booth in the back corner of the cantina and asks in a low voice, “Any chance you’d be interested in helping a girl in trouble?”

Ymira asks the blonde woman what sort of trouble, and sees that she is roughed up and injured. "The name’s Renci Tosh, and as I’m sure you guessed, I’m a visitor to Tatooine, and I seem to have fallen afoul of the local criminal element. I could use some help getting back to my ship. I can’t pay you now, as I left all my goods back at the ship, but once that’s recovered, I can promise a reward of 500 credits apiece. So if you’re interested, we need to get started right away. Can you help me?”

The group starts to discuss the option, when more trouble walks in the door. A group of men wearing crude uniforms and carrying blaster pistols, seven in total, burst through the door and start looking around. They begin to rudely look for a woman matching Renci’s general description and while she tries to blend in with your group, a Rodian at the bar nods to the men and points over at your booth.

The crude men reach for Renci and inform the rest at the table that this is official business and not any of their concern. Zavi, having spent much time in Mos Espa, recognizes their uniforms as a "private security firm" which is really just a protection racket run by a local crime lord named Madon Ani. The Chevin is also well-known as a slave trader and works with Kees Thelu, who runs a fighting pit out of an old docking bay in a seedy part of Mos Espa.

These men are trying to take potential money out of your pockets! What do you do now?
