War for Gateway Recap Session #16

April 23rd, 569

About an hour after the encounter with the enemy barge, the Hover Barges see the canal open up into a gigantic cavern. They power down the Hover Barges so as to not stand out so much. The canal leads into a cavern roughly 300' wide and 500' long. It is dark in the cavern, but several areas of light are noted further ahead on the left hand bank.

There is a beach on either side of the waterway. Three more enemy barges are found. They are crudely constructed and are essentially logs roped together. The ropes are cut to prevent further usage.

On the right back is a large field of giant wild mushrooms. Wimzy approaches them as she loves mushrooms and wants to eat one. As she approaches, tentacles emerge from one of the mushrooms and slaps several party members. Everyone wisely backs off from the mushroom with the flailing tentacles.

Flare notes a well-worn path that hugs the cavern wall away from the mushrooms. This leads to an worked opening in the cavern wall. Standing in the middle of this opening is a 8' tall figure in black plate mail armor. It has six arms and each holds a weapon in it. The upper arms have a longbow, the middle longswords and the lower arms daggers.

On the other shore another opening is found and a second six armored figure identical to the first stands guard. Further down the shore, several cave openings are noted with light coming out of them. Each opening leads into a mine tunnel and not too far along a Continual Light spell has been placed on the ceiling.

The group explores a little bit and ends up in a section not lit by the Continual Light. Dark shapes are noted and Wimzy realizes that they are shadows! Wimzy and Ma Granite are powerful enough to destroy the undead while Eris and Laurel can only turn them. The group comes to believe that the Continual Light spells are there to pen in the shadows and suspect the these mines are trapped for those trying to avoid the guards at the main entrances.

Reluctantly Wyvern Squad and the Goblin Kickers rush the six armed figure on the left hand shore. The groups weapons do very little damage and Eris believes these to be magical guardians of Hextor. Something called a Battle Golem. Eris manages to affect the construct with a Dispel Magic and it stops moving. Everyone runs past as the effect will not last long.

The main tunnel shows signs of old use. Ruts are dig into the floor where many ore carts passed in the past. A few damaged carts are noted along the way. Not too far in the passage opens into a larger chamber. A large shaft drops away from the floor. A crude lift was once here, but it broke apart ages ago. A rock with Light cast on it is thrown down and it is estimated that the shaft is 300' deep.

Two doors are noted on the far side of the chamber. Both are barred from this side. One door leads into a room where a chest sits on the floor. Brock goes to open the chest only to discover it is a mimic! The mimic's tongue misses Brock and he simply backs away. The other door leads into a passage and to a door. The group figures that this area, since it is barred, just holds more traps and monsters so they return to the main passageway.

A ramp going up is discovered further ahead, but at the top of the ramp is a portcullis. With that way barred, the group continues onward and enters into a large cavern. The ancient dwarves built buildings inside this cavern. Each is around 10' tall and the cavern ceiling is around 25' overhead.

Hobgoblin archers appear overhead and open fire. Battle is join as several of the group climb up to the archers. Other enemies emerge from behind the buildings. A Fireball explodes among the group. Eris stuns the spell caster with a Color Spray. After a short and brutal combat, the enemies are defeated.

The map for Bollo's Spear is far too big to post here in the forum. Its on the bottom of the roster/sheets page with the other large maps. The location of the shadows and the mimic are noted as well. The squares on the map are 10' in size.

Here is the Link

Here's the key for the letters:

BG = Battle Golems
EB = Enemy Barges
HB = Hover Barges

Now what?
