War for Gateway Session Recap #6

April 15th:

After regaining spells, Wyvern Squad mounts up with the intent of harassing the enemy army from behind. They ride from Eagle's Nest down the mountainside and reach the forest without incident. Not far into the forest they find a large rock sitting in the middle of the trail that was not there before.

The group moves off the road thinking that it might be an ambush. This is quickly confirmed as there are snipers up in the trees firing arrows. Anik is wounded, but the snipers are rapidly dealt with once located. Kendell moves the rock without setting off any sort of trap. However, once the group mounts up once more and rides past it, a magical mouth appears on the rock and screams something in hobgoblin!

Moving on once more, another rock is discovered in the road. This time the snipers are located and Laurel and Saladino climb up the tree to deal with them.

Growing weary of these ambushes, Wyvern Squad leaves the trail and goes through the forest towards the main road. After several hours of riding, the group reaches the main road. The army is not in sight, but coming down the road is a small caravan. Hobgoblin drivers control wagons pulled by oxen. The middle three wagons are larger and have archery platforms on top of them with more archers.

Splitting into groups, the Squad ambushes the caravan. Anik and Erisci target the archers with Sleep spells with Flare giving cover fire. Daubeny and Kendell rush the first wagon and engage the drivers. Saladino and Laurel come in from behind. Saladino climbs over the top of the last wagon and engages the drivers.

There is some resistance, but the hobgoblins are quickly defeated. The middle wagons are loaded with barrels of the loathsome Goblin Spit, a alcoholic beverage favored by goblin kind. The other wagons have mostly rations in them along with weapons. In the last wagon 10 ceramic containers of Alchemist's Fire are found. The squad decides to uses these to disrupt the enemy's rear.

Donning the garb of the hobgoblins, Wyvern Squad drives the three large wagons towards the enemy army who are camped about three miles away. The enemy is already cutting trees down to form barricades. Many other wagons are present along with numerous cooking fires where the oxen are slaughtered for food. Goblins, orcs, hobgoblins and ogres are seen. Alarmingly there are some hill giants as well.

Once as close to the enemy fortifications as they dare, the wagons full of Goblin Spit are lit on fire and the oxen prodded into motion. As the fire grows larger, the speed of the oxen increase. The first wagon is pulled into the area behind the barricades and into the enemy camp. Barrels of Goblin Spit explode as the driver-less wagons rumble along. The second wagon follows the first, while the last wagon remains outside the log barricades.

Using the chaos to their advantage, members of Wyvern Squad slip into the enemy camp and lob containers of Alchemist's Fire at tempting targets. Such as crates of supplies, tents and other important looking targets. Their task done, the group retreats with archers firing at them.

The group reaches their horses and ride away from the enemy army. Further down the road they had a wagon loaded with the supplies they wanted to take with them ready to go. Along with the wagon, the group rides back to Eagle's Nest. A third nest of snipers was found along the way, but this time the group just rode fast past them.

The safety of Eagle's Nest was reached and the Squad retired for the evening.

GM Notes:

Lots of XP's earned and many levels gained. There was enough healing magic left over to heal everyone back to maximum health.

The spells in the hobgoblin mages' book are listed in the spell book thread.

Now what?
