Operation: Graystone #31

April 16th, CR 569

After fleeing from a dragon, the scattered Squad members are starting to find each other and others. Meanwhile the enemy siege of Fort Graystone seems to have been broken. The Goblinoids are withdrawing, but hobgoblins not directly involved in the siege are ordering those who were to continue the fight. Instead they fight with each other!

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

With the enemy forces having passed their position, Lucyus, Vardra and Wimzy begin to ride back to Fort Graystone. A short time later, riders coming from the fort are spotted. They are friendly as they carry the banners of the Army of Cynalon! One of the riders moves ahead of the others and calls out to the trio. Lucyus responds.
Lucyus wrote:“Team wyvern and Chimera. How is the status of Fort Graystone?” The Paladin calls back.
“At ease, men,” the rider calls back to those behind him. “We have a follower of noble Heironeous in our midst!

As Lucyus gets closer, he notes that the man before him is dressed in shiny plate mail armor. He removes his helm to reveal a man with long dark hair and a beard. Another rider sits a short distance behind the lead rider. He too wears well maintained plate mail armor and bears what is guessed to be the standard of the man speaking.

“Approach and report, members of Wyvern and Chimera Squad,” the armored man calls out. “I am Sir Justin Moore, Knight of the Cynalon, Defender of the Realm. It is the intention of my men and I to dog those who attacked Fort Graystone back to whatever hole they crawled out of and neutralize their threat. If you have knowledge of what lies before us, than you may join us in our quest.”

Sir Justin Moore is a name that all three of the Squad Members have heard before. As he stated, he is a Knight of the King of Cynalon. There were whispers that Sir Justin, along with Sir Alon Teramar were part of the force seeking to retake Gateway. His reputation as a champion of good proceeds him. Should he check, Lucyus will not even find a hint of evil coming from Sir Justin.

“Fort Graystone endures,” Sir Justin continues. “Preparations are underway to take the fight to the enemy. Today Cynalon starts to fight back!”

Butternut, Kaylessa and Vernar:

Elsewhere in Graystone Pass, Butternut and Kaylessa have located Vernar. Vernar had just spotted what he thought to be Ren, but the gnome trickster acted like he did not know the dwarven scout and dart off back into the woods. Confused by this development, Vernar brings Butternut and Kaylessa up to speed.

Talk settles in on what to do next. Either try to find Ren or make for the Eagle's Nest outpost figuring that any others who survived the dragon attack would go there. Neither direction seems any more dangerous than the other right now.

Ren moved back down the road towards the Goblin Lair. That's the direction the hobgoblins came from, so it stand to reason that area is light on enemy forces right now.

The hobgoblins and remainder of the army are clashing on the road that connects this area to the main road between Fort Graystone and Gateway. As far as Vernar can tell, the hobgoblins did not continue up the road towards Eagle's Nest, so that direction should be light on enemies as well. Neither path seems barred at the moment. Just a matter of which direction you want to go in.

Ren:

After moving away from the dwarf, Ren circles back around moving as quietly as he can. He takes a position deeper in the woods than before and finds a save spot to keep watch from. The dwarf has not seemed to move very much, but now he is not a lone. A lady elf and halfling has joined him! They are too far away to make out what they are saying.

GM Notes:

Apologizes for the long delay. It's been a very busy month and today is the first day off I've had since Easter. Things should settle back into our semi-regular pattern from now on.
Would the squad have been given some kind of call-sign to confirm their identity in such a situation?
The various Sergeants would have known the various codes needed for identification, but did not share them with the rank and file.

Now what?

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
Sir Justin Moore wrote:“At ease, men,” the rider calls back to those behind him. “We have a follower of noble Heironeous in our midst!
Upon encountering a party from the Cynalonian Army, Lucyus declares their identity. The leader of the military troop welcomes them, recognizing the paladin's service to Heironeous. Behind their leader, a second warrior bears the leader's standard. It seems familiar to Vardra and he searches his memory for this particular blazon. After a few moments, he recalls that this is the standard of none other than Sir Justin Moore!

Vardra has heard of this man, both during his own military training and from his father. Sir Justin's reputation is sterling; he is truly a hero of great repute and achievement.
Sir Justin Moore wrote:“Approach and report, members of Wyvern and Chimera Squad,” the armored man calls out.

“Fort Graystone endures,” Sir Justin continues. “Preparations are underway to take the fight to the enemy. Today Cynalon starts to fight back!”
As instructed, Vardra rides forward and turns his horse to join the knight's patrol. "Yes, sir! PFC Vardra Marcus reporting for duty, sir!" He is indeed quite happy to join in support of their goals and serve under such a renowned leader.

Vernar -
"We saw fighting. The hobs didn't seem to like the others giving up. Good seeing them kill each other off," Butternut says, grinning darkly. "I think any of ours that survived would likely head for the overlook." Butternut nods up the road toward the Eagle's Nest entrance. "At least there are supplies there; make a good base to search from."
"That seems t' be the best o' options at this point," Vernar replies.

He takes one last look out into the woods to see if he can glimpse the gnome, but then turns his focus back towards reaching Eagle's Nest.

"I did not see much in the way o' enemies up this way," Vernar says softly to both Butternut and Kaylessa, "but still be best t' not announce ourselves."

Vernar will start making his way towards the outpost. He will stay off the main trail and remain alert for anything lurking in the area. He knows both of his current companions will do just fine, so he focuses on not falling prey to an ambush or trap.

Butternut:

With Ren off who-knows-where, they have to choose a next move. Butternut suggests returning to the Eagle's Nest to set up as a staging point for further searching. Vernar agrees, so they have a place to start.
Vernar wrote:"I did not see much in the way o' enemies up this way," Vernar says softly to both Butternut and Kaylessa, "but still be best t' not announce ourselves."
Butternut nods curtly, then glances over at Kaylessa. "Gotcha." She takes up position to Vernar's right as they slink up the hill through the forest. She maintains enough space between them so that she can see him most of the time, but gives them each space to operate if they encounter trouble. With the elf, the three of them should be able to handle most problems they run into. As long as it's not a dragon...

As they work their way forward, the halfling finds herself wondering what's up with the gnome. Ren's always been a bit odd, but from what Vernar said, this feels different somehow. 'I hope he's okay...'

Prior to setting up position observing the dwarf and now a halfling and elf:

It had been some time since he had seen any sign of anyone. He felt safe, now, there had been no pursuit and he was alone. What is going on? He takes a quick rest and a long breath to recover a little energy from his unceremonious flight. Skirting the woods for awhile on the northern portion of the split pass near the foot of the mountain he has some time to recollect his composure before heading back south and it is at this moment he stumbled upon the gaping maw of Bollo's Shield.

For a split second some memories rush in as he stares at the slightly decayed entrance to these Dwarven caverns. Goblins! There were a bunch of goblins harassing dwarves in a giant arena. Scattered by a giant golem a host of them had been driven off. New friends, shortly lived. A wave of sorrow hits him as he recollects the valiance of a lost comrade. Yet he can't grasp the small details.

Blast it! Should I have not run away? I'll have to find my moment to reveal myself, but if there are other goblins around maybe I can at least shield those adventurers from surprise attacks.

Upon setting up position near Vernar, Butternut and Kaylessa:

Fantastic! I managed to get in position without him noticing me, but there are more now. A halfling and an elf?! What a strange party.

As he takes in more of the scene an odd sense of comfort sets in. His gaze affixed on the halfling he can't make it out but feels like he should know her. She seems... familiar. Her gait as she paces around, the ease with which she carries herself and practiced, deliberate movements.

Then he spies the elf. She had been slightly obscured from view in the foliage and between the trees till she shifted and suddenly like a tidal wave some of the details from his prior memories begin to fill.

In his mind he is walking out of the darkness within the tunnels towards a campfire, cautiously pushing forward alongside someone when they come upon the other squad, and silhouetted against the wall is this elf. Tall and lithe with a discerning stare. It was his first real occasion spending any time in the company of an elf and their composed and deft nature still left a small part of him in awe.

Well, I'm in the right place at least. I'll follow along till I must reveal myself for now. At least I can rest assured they are no foe.

Maintaining his hiding while following the group and beginning to focus his attentions around him rather than on the group, he will serve to protect them from ambush from this flank.

Vardra is the first to act, falling into their rank and file. Looking to wimzy then moving forward, Lucyus lifts his helm as he turns his mount.

“Hail and well met, Sir Justin, I am Lucyus of Heironous and this is Wimzy of the Blue Lady.

“The Eagle’s nest was won after a time. There is a pressure trap leading to the bowels of the mountain. Our Sgt. fell to the trap. We soon found remnants of Chimera Squad and joined forces. In time we found an abandoned dwarven fortress that was derolic and overrun with goblins. Thanks to a Stone guardian much of their people died in the coming battle. Knowing it was time to move, we retreated to the Eagle’s nest. We soon found ourselves under siege of Hexorite humanoids. In time we turned repelled their forces and broke their will, The Hextor followers slain. We explored The eagles nest more and soon found that it is connected to the fort below, Bollo’s shield. After some debate and good planning we harried and destroyed their supply lines. Burning their wagons and killing more of their number.

We soon set out again to cripple their supply lines further and did so. In the process we came upon a battle. A battle of humanoids and a great green dragon intervened before we could. I do not know where it came from nor where it went, but it put the fear of the gods within us all. Wimzy, Vardra and myself found each other. The others, a dwarf, halfling, elf and gnome I do not know of their whereabouts. If they went anywhere, I’d wager they would try to return to the eagle’s nest.”

Dismounting, Lucyus picks up a stick and draws within the dirt. Showing Sir Justin the rough positions of Bollo’s shield and Spear as well as where the Dragon showed up and the supply wagons were hit and the direction they were coming from.

“I do not know what forces lay ahead of us nor their strengths. I would imagine the goblins are still dealing with the Dwarven Guardian. If you encounter it, give it a wide berth. I will ride with you, Please tell your men of our friends so they maybe watchful.”

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

While riding back to Fort Graystone, the mounted trio has encountered a group coming from that direction. It is a dozen riders led by none other than Sir Justin Moore, a famous knight of the realm.
Vardra wrote:As instructed, Vardra rides forward and turns his horse to join the knight's patrol. "Yes, sir! PFC Vardra Marcus reporting for duty, sir!" He is indeed quite happy to join in support of their goals and serve under such a renowned leader.
“Welcome to the party, private,” Sir Moore intones when Vardra rides up.

Lucyus and Wimzy soon follow suit.
Lucyus wrote:“Hail and well met, Sir Justin, I am Lucyus of Heironeous and this is Wimzy of the Blue Lady.”
“Good to have you along, Lucyus of Heironeous,” Sir Moore states. “And to you as well, Wimzy of Azrella.”

With Lucyus, Vardra and Wimzy joining the group, the entire procession continues forward riding back towards the retreating army. Food and drink are offered to the new arrivals if they are hungry or thirsty. The man carrying Sir Moore's banner is his squire, Armon Flamehilt. As the group rides along, Lucyus brings the knight up to speed on what has transpired.

“I'll pass along word to keep our eyes open for others,” Squire Flamehilt vows. He lets his horse drift back through the procession, bringing the other riders up to speed.

“It sounds to me that your band had a large hand in causing the siege to break,” Sir Moore observes. “Its difficult to control such a large and unruly group as it is, but take away their food and drink... That's when they reach the breaking point. Well done!”

“The dragon attacked Fort Graystone a few days ago, but we were able to drive it off,” Sir Moore continues. “The foul beast is called Emerald and it has plagued this region for years now. Keep your eyes open for the beast overhead.”

Time passes as the large group rides along. There is one female among Sir Moore's group. She's human and dresses in the style of a woodman. Her name is Mara Korvin and the holy symbol she proudly displays tells you that she is a follower of Ehlonna.

“Look, Sir Justin!” Mara calls out and points down the road up ahead. Smoke can be seen rising up into the sky as the fires of the caravan that was destroyed on the main road smolder. “Smoke.”

“Be on alert everyone,” Sir Moore advises. “Looks like we are catching up to the enemy. Let's ride closer to get a better look at this destroyed caravan.”

GM Notes:

Sir Justin Moore is an unusual character in this game. I've referred to him several times in the past, even as far back as the Borderlands game on Q-link. But this is the first time that he's actually appeared in anything. He is a fighter and not a paladin so his armor and shield have no specific references to any of the deities of good.

His squire, Lord Armon Flamehilt, will later on become a member of the Seekers in the Frontier Game. Mara Korvin turned up recently in the Sylvan Realm game as part of a larger group that the second Argent had adventured with. Connections!

The dragon Emerald was mentioned way back on the 6th Frontier post on Q-Link. One of the assignments on the mission board was reward for defeating the dragon. Emerald's appearance in this game serves to demonstrate why there is such a large reward for slaying the dragon.

Going to do anything special as you ride up the ruined caravan?

Butternut, Kaylessa and Vernar:

Elsewhere in Graystone Pass other members of the squad have caught up to each other. The scouts found themselves relatively close to each other. Butternut, Kaylessa and Vernar share what they have learned. Ren has been spotted close by, but he mysterious ran off when Vernar tried to approach.

The trio decide to move on towards the Eagle's Nest area as it is a safe place with supplies. The group moves quickly through the forest staying well clear of the road. The sound of the goblinoids fighting fades as they move along until all is silent once more. Pausing the look around, the road up to Eagle's Nest now seems to be deserted.

Time passes as the trio move along, keeping an eye out for any traps along the way. All has been quiet for some time now. It seems that the hobgoblins didn't come this far and all of their attention was focused on the retreating army.

Eventually the scouts reach the end of the woods. Here the road starts to wind its way up the hillside toward the entrance to the Eagle Nest area. Bodies of hobgoblins defeated days ago still litter the area. Scavengers, rats, buzzards and the like are picking at the bodies. The area seems to be deserted.

GM Notes:

There's not much in the way of cover going up the hillside. Going to do anything special going up or just walk ahead. It's mid-afternoon by now and night fall is still hours away. There is a map of the outside are of Eagle's Nest in the Maps section of the Private Area to refresh your memories.

Ren:

The dwarf, halfling and elf converse for a time in hushed tones before moving off once more. The group fans out and moves ahead in the woods, staying clear of the road. Ren silently follows along.

Up ahead the smoldering ruins of a small caravan come into sight triggering a memory in Ren's mind. He vaguely recalls stabbing an ogre here and sure enough several dead ogre bodies are noted among the caravan. Some are still harnessed to the wagons!

The group Ren is follow continues onward. Sounds of battle can be heard coming from the side road where this caravan came from. The unlikely trio stays on the road they have been following and move past the caravan.

Time passes as Ren continues to follow along. All is quiet now with the sound of fighting having faded off in the distance. Up ahead, the dwarf, halfling and elf have come to a stop. They are looking at something ahead of them, but Ren cannot see what it is from his position.

GM Notes:

Ren attacked an ogre with his daggers in Operation: Graystone #28. That when the this caravan was attacked.

Sir Moore wrote:“Welcome to the party, private,” Sir Moore intones when Vardra rides up.
Vardra snaps a salute, then finds a place a row or two behind the leaders. He accepts a skin of water and a bite to eat, since it has been a few hours since they broke camp.

Lucyus the paladin provides Sir Justin Moore with a good overview of the squad's activities and experiences since they left the fort, and the commander seems pleased with their efforts. While in truth it has been less than a week, much has happened and been accomplished in those few days. It is a rewarding feeling knowing that their efforts contributed to the lifting of the siege.

Apparently the dragon, Emerald, had also harried the fort and is well know. With the day being clear, they should have fair warning if it returns, but Vardra keeps one eye on the sky anyway.

As they ride, Vardra will chat with a few of the soldiers nearby, asking about the siege experience from their perspective. He also asks after the welfare of one soldier, Private Drannon, he had met there before his squad was sent out, though he suspects it is unlikely they know of him.

As the platoon approaches the location of the last caravan they had hit, a woman dressed as a ranger points out smoke still rising from the area.
Sir Moore wrote:“Be on alert everyone,” Sir Moore advises. “Looks like we are catching up to the enemy. Let's ride closer to get a better look at this destroyed caravan.”
"I doubt they would have tarried long here, sir; there wasn't much left to salvage and it has been burning since last night," Vardra says. Still, he keeps his eyes peeled for stragglers or any other threat.

Butternut:

The sound of fighting fades away behind them as the scouts make their way uphill through the woods. They move roughly parallel to the road; occasionally, they get a glimpse through the woods and note that there don't appear to be any foes moving about this far up. Leaving the known threats behind them and approaching an area they know, there is a tendency to relax and be less cautious. Fortunately, these three are quickly becoming experienced adventurers and understand how unwise that would be. What you are unaware of is often far more dangerous than the threats you know of.

Well-trained scouts all, Vernar, Kaylessa, and Butternut are able to make good time as they glide stealthily up the hill. The woods are quiet and peaceful, and they do little to change that. Butternut spots an occasional bird or other small animal; a hawk glimpsed through a hole in the leafy canopy reminds her of their companion Flare. What became of him, she doesn't know, and can only hope that he fares well - wherever he is.

The woods thin and then fall away entirely at the foot of the steep ascent leading to the Eagle's Nest entrance. Pausing at the edge of the undergrowth, the trio eye the wide-open space before them.

"Don't like it -- too exposed," Butternut growls to her companions. "Vernar, remember that gully we chased the half-orc down? Better cover if we go that way." The halfling jerks her head in that direction to emphasize what she means.

"Might as well," Vernar replies simply. No sense in taking unnecessary risks after everything they have been through recently. As Vernar gets ready to head out once more, he will not only keep his eye around him, but also check the sky occasionally just in a case a dragon is roaming about nearby.

Kaylessa
Following into line with the others, Kaylessa moves as quietly through the trees as she can. She spots birds and other creatures upon her travel but nothing of a humanoid nature. It would seem the dragon has passed us by as well, at least for now.

As she follows the others, “ Let us hope that they did not go to the Eagle’s nest.We would be hard pressed to retake that.” she says evenly running after Butternut.

Seeing the break in the trees, Kaylessa looks about to the skies then to the left and right. “ Seems clear enough, but I agree it would be best for us to keep to cover. Hopefully that rope is still near that ledge, Or this will be all for naught. Unless you have more rope.”

At a cautious pace the group ahead advances with Ren in tow, though at this stage his focus is split. Struggling with grasping the situation he didn't notice at first as they approached a small intersectional clearing and lost in thought his foot kicks something lying on the forest floor. Glancing down, the corpse of the hobgoblin brings the rest of the gruesome scene into view. Several carts clearly aligned for transport lie overturned or burnt to cinders. The tiny licks of flame left as residue imply alchemical fire until the smell of putrid ash confirms it. A mass of hobgoblins and ogres lie strewn about in similar condition and though some have an almost peaceful, sleeping face many are twisted in pain.

It's the edge of nightfall and Wyvern Squad have been tracking this caravan for some time. The formation is set and the trap is ready with everyone spread within 20 feet of someone else for visibility. Looking back from the left flank, the steeled frame and piercing blue eyes of Vernar stare back. Signals similar to those given before Ren fled earlier are flashed in his direction. As Ren turns away and begins to lope off towards the front of the caravan at the bend, Kaylessa signals her intent to sleep the front caravan her easy strides carrying her to their flanking position. As Ren readies the alchemical grenade in his hands, he creeps with utmost care towards the caravan at the turn.

The guttural growls and grunts of ogres are accentuated by the tension as they pass amidst the occasional shouts and orders from hobgoblins. Seconds feel like minutes as Ren works into throwing range. A moment of silence as the grenade flies through the air and with the crash of glass, whoosh and crackle of igniting chemicals, and screams of a burning ogre and his drivers, the trap is sprung. The ogre is finished by a young paladin of towering height as the others spring to action capitalizing on the chaos of these first moments to sew confusion and cause massive damage. The front caravan crashes to a halt as the bodies around it slump to the ground causing the rest of the caravan to stop in a clattering mess as arrows and magic embed themselves in the other ogres and drivers.

Not wanting to be caught in the open Ren slides under the next caravan preparing his next move with daggers ready. The surviving enemy forces, still unable to regain their composure, are quickly being overrun and one of the dumb ogres has left it's back open. Springing from under the cart, Ren's daggers gouge deep into its back and leave a massive gash as they slice downward from his wild stab. Looking around as the adrenaline quickly fades, those hobgoblins bound by holy magics and those struggling to collect themselves are finished off by a remorseless Butternut and a gruff Vernar who seems to have given up on his bow. Other friends mill through the carnage including a warm little halfling who wanders through the remains of the fight asking to heal those wounded as Ren begins to line his pockets with the newly made corpses' spare change.

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

Three members of the Squad have encountered a patrol coming from Fort Graystone. Sir Justin Moore commands the unit who are pursuing the fleeing army after the broken siege. Joining up with Sir Justin, the unit continues along heading towards Gateway through Graystone Pass.
Vardra wrote:As they ride, Vardra will chat with a few of the soldiers nearby, asking about the siege experience from their perspective. He also asks after the welfare of one soldier, Private Drannon, he had met there before his squad was sent out, though he suspects it is unlikely they know of him.
One of the soldiers knows of Private Drannon. The last they knew he was still back at Fort Graystone.

Talk turns to the green dragon that first attacked the fort and then later caused the Squad to split up. Sir Justin names the dragon Emerald.
Lucyus wrote:“Is there an area that this, Emerald prefers?” he asks curiously. “If it has been in the region for a time someone would have taken notice, or no longer frequents due to its presence.”
“I am told that his kind prefers the forests,” Sir Justin states. “The dragon hasn't reached Crossroads, so we didn't pay it much heed. Were I to venture a guess, I'd say that we're on the edge of its territory or the Hextorites bought the dragon's services. If it does have a lair in this area, its probably some isolated valley in the mountains.”
Vardra wrote:As the platoon approaches the location of the last caravan they had hit, a woman dressed as a ranger points out smoke still rising from the area.

"I doubt they would have tarried long here, sir; there wasn't much left to salvage and it has been burning since last night," Vardra says. Still, he keeps his eyes peeled for stragglers or any other threat.
“Probably not, but then our foes are not among the most brightest of races either,” Sir Justin notes.

The riders cautiously advance towards the destroyed caravan. The bodies of orcs and ogres are strewn across the road. A few rats and other scavengers are spotted among the bodies. There seems very little to salvage from this caravan. All is mostly quiet, but the sounds of combat reach the riders ears after a time. The noise seems to be coming from down a side trail leading away from the main road. The Squad knows this to the way to Eagle's Nest and the goblin lair.

“There is battle ahead!” Sir Justin calls out. “Perhaps the rest of your squad mates are locked in combat! Let us ride to their aid!”

With that, Sir Justin spurs on his horse towards the sound of distant battle. The other members of his unit does the same. The mounts ride at a full gallop and quickly cover the distance to the battle site. But instead of finding orcs battling humans, its hobgoblins wearing black leather fighting against orcs and ogres, seemingly the members of the retreating army!

“To battle!” Sir Justin cries out as he fearlessly charges toward the enemy!

GM Notes:

The hobgoblins in black leather seem to be part of the same group that the Squad battled a few days ago. The orcs and ogres do not share a common uniform. There's about 20 hobgoblins and 30 orcs and ogres locked in combat. There are slain bodies of all three races in the immediate area. At the far end of the battlefield, wagons from the last caravan the squad took out can be seen.

Butternut, Kaylessa and Vernar:

The scouts have reached the base of the hill leading up to the Eagle's Nest. The trail winds its way up the hillside providing very little cover to those traveling up it. With the area and the sky clear, the scouts rush forward and begin the tedious climb. Butternut sets the pace and the others follow.

The bodies of the hobgoblins were moved to the side of the trail a few days ago to allow the squad to ride their horses down the hillside and then later on bring loaded wagons up. Before long, the gully is reached. There was a fire here a few days ago when the hobgoblins attacked but it has sent burnt out. The scouts leave the trail and slide down into the gully. The rope the hobgoblins used when they tried to attack from behind is still there. The scouts climb up the rope.

The wooded area at the base of Eagle's Nest is pretty much as the group remembers it. The supply wagons sit around the campfire area. There has been no sign of anyone being here.

GM Notes:

Its late afternoon by now, around supper time. Nightfall is still hours away. Going to set up camp here for the night or explore some more? Stay outside or check out the Eagle's Nest itself.

Now what?

Ren:

Ren continues to follow the dwarf, the elf, and the halfling. He has no trouble keeping pace with them. After moving through the woods for well over an hour, they come to a stop. They are talking about and looking at something that Ren cannot see. After a time, the trio start to move once more.

Ren continues to cautiously advance and is soon in the same spot the trio had been in. The woods fall way to reveal a barren hillside that seems vaguely familiar. The trail winds its way up the hill. The dwarf, elf, and halfling are making their way up the trail as Ren watches from cover.

The trial winds its way to the right from where Ren is at now. Than it curves back to the left, before turning right once more. At the second right hand turn, the trio is lost from sight.

Vividly those images of the battle are now burned into Ren's thoughts as he stares at the group in front of him meandering up the path. There doesn't appear to be any cover for a while so now Ren feels like he needs to make his move while there is maybe some avenue of escape. As they wind up the path and just before they approach the right cutback Ren runs up to the wall near the turn hugging in close so they would have to peer over to see him and calls out

"Hail, and be well met. For I do not know I know you but can't shake the feeling that I do. Do you know me? Let's start from there."

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

As they ride along the main road, Vardra leaves dealing with Sir Moore to the paladin Lucyus. As one of the squad's leaders, it's more appropriate for him to handle the officers. Vardra is more comfortable with the enlisted men.

One of the soldiers he's chatting with knew of Private Drannon and says he was well when last seen. "Thank you, that's good to hear." Vardra breathes a sigh of relief; the private was quite young and seemed like a good fellow.

As they approach the smoldering caravan, Vardra wonders aloud whether any of the foe would have stuck around the area.
Sir Moore wrote:“Probably not, but then our foes are not among the most brightest of races either,” Sir Justin notes.
"Aye, sir," Vardra replies with a nod.

The caravan indeed appears to be abandoned and naught but a smoking shell. They take a quick look around but don't find anything but dead bodies and scavenging animals.

Soon, the sounds of battle are heard approaching from up the trail to the left. "That's the route up to the Eagle's Nest and Bollo's Shield," Vardra states aloud.

Sir Moore calls for the platoon to ride to possibly rescue their friends, so Vardra readies his sword and shield and rides up the trail. They quickly reach the battle, but find that two groups of the enemy are fighting each other.
Sir Moore wrote:“To battle!” Sir Justin cries out as he fearlessly charges toward the enemy!
"To battle!" Vardra echoes enthusiastically, and charges his horse into the packed humanoids. All here are foes, and he will attack any that he comes across unless given orders to the contrary.

_____________________________________________________________________
I don't think Forelock is really a warhorse, but I didn't see any mention of Sir Justin dismounting, so figure Vardra would just follow along in his excitement.

Butternut:

Try as she might, Butternut cannot find a better way up. Though disliking being so exposed, Butternut leads the way up the steep mountain path. The only consolation is -- if there are enemy up by the entrance -- they would have to be right near the edge of the flat area to have any chance of seeing the scouts.

The hill is so steep that the path has to wend back and forth from side to side through several tight turns. Almost as soon as they step out of the woods, they go around a hard bend to the left As thy proceed, Butternut continuously scans the edge near the top for any sign of foes.

Just as they start into the hairpin turn back to the right, a familiar-sounding voice calls out from behind and to their left.
Ren wrote:"Hail, and be well met. For I do not know I know you but can't shake the feeling that I do. Do you know me? Let's start from there."
Though half-hidden, Butternut confirms the voice's identity from the shock of purple hair poking out in all directions. She scans around again to make sure no enemies heard his call. "Ren?" she calls back in a loud whisper. "It is you! Don't you remember us? You traveled with us since we left Crossroads. Kaylessa, Vernar," she gestures at each in turn, "and myself, Butternut. I'm glad you're well. You seen any of the others?"

Vernar -

Vernar trudges along with Butternut as they make their way out from the near constant cover that Vernar has been sticking to ever since things took a wrong turn with the dragon. He trains his vision in the directions where his halfling companion isn't looking so that she does not need to have her head completely on a swivel. As they are negotiating the path, Vernar hears a voice call out from nearby.
"Hail, and be well met. For I do not know I know you but can't shake the feeling that I do. Do you know me? Let's start from there."
Though half-hidden, Butternut confirms the voice's identity from the shock of purple hair poking out in all directions. She scans around again to make sure no enemies heard his call. I'm glad you're well. You seen any of the others?"
"Well, at least I be knowin' I not be goin' completely daft," Vernar lets out a sigh of relief that he hadn't imagined the whole brief encounter earlier.

Ren still doesn't seem to be, well, Ren. Cautious against some bewitching spell or shape shifter, Vernar will look around to see if he detects any glimmer of movement or if something doesn't seem quite right like an illusion. While scanning the area, he will wait to see what the response is from the gnome, if any.

Kaylessa spins and draws, staring down the shaft of her arrow and then begins to release the tension as realizes who stands before them. Kaylessa looks upon the thief. “Hail, though we have already met. Aye we know you.” she replies.

Kaylessa will take up position with her bow and watch the entrance before them.

Post Continued:

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

The trio has joined up with a unit of scouts and soldiers commanded by Sir Justin Moore, a famous Knight of the Realm. This unit is following the trail of the army from the broken siege of Fort Graystone. While doing reconnaissance at a destroyed caravan on the main road, the sound of combat can be heard coming from the side road that leads to the Eagle's Nest area. Fearing that other missing members of the squad are locked in battle, the recon unit rides to investigate.

In short order it is discovered that the battle is between goblinoids! On one side are hobgoblins all dressed in black leather armor similar to the style the Squad fought a few days ago. The other side is a ragtag band of orcs, goblins and ogres. Those who watch for a few moments can see that the hobgoblins are the superior fighters, but they are outnumbered by the ragtags.

“To battle!” Sir Justin cries out as he fearlessly charges toward the enemy!
Vardra wrote:"To battle!" Vardra echoes enthusiastically, and charges his horse into the packed humanoids. All here are foes, and he will attack any that he comes across unless given orders to the contrary.
Lucyus wrote:“Hold On Wimzy!” he calls back to his companion and urges his mount after the knight. “Let us go to their aid! And follows axe and shield at the ready.
“Like I have a choice?!” Wimzy calls out as she holds on for dear life.

Sir Justin, astride a warhorse complete with metallic barding, simply plows through the largest group of enemy forces he can find. One hand on the reigns, sword in the other, Sir Justin hacks his way along. Some of the enemy are bulled over and trampled under horse foot. Others are struck by steel and fall from the wounds.

Vardra follows in the wake of Sir Justin's passage. His bastard sword lashes out, wounding those with his passage. Lucyus trails Vardra with his battle axe at the ready. Wimzy has a death grip in the reigns as she tries to steer the shared horse. More enemies fall from the riders.

Others of Sir Justin's unit follow suit, while some dismount before reaching the enemy and simply wade into the fray as an organized unit. Mara has a longbow in her hands and fires arrows at any inviting target from atop her horse.

The riders passage has a devastating effect on the enemy forces. While hobgoblins hold their ground, the other goblinoids mostly flee for their lives. Some rush down the road while others seek shelter in the forest. A few ogres have some fight in them, but they are tired and already bloodied and prove to not be a dangerous opponent.

After making his first mounted charge, Sir Justin leaps from his mount and joins the fray. Lucyus and Vardra follow suit as do any others from the unit who were still on horseback. For those who watch, all can see that Sir Justin is highly skilled and easily makes quick work of any enemy he faces. After a few minutes, the one-sided battle has ended.

“Well fought all!” Sir Justin compliments, holding his sword skyward.

“What about those who ran off?” Mara wonders.

“Let them run,” Sir Justin commands. “In their haste to flee they will lead us to the rest of their forces.”

Turning to Lucyus and Vardra, Sir Justin adds, “I assume that you are both more familiar with this area. Which way to the the Eagle's Nest? We should check to make sure if any of your Squad mates went their for safety.”

In the background, Wimzy works to apply bandages to those with minor wounds while giving healing magic to those more seriously hurt.

Now what?

Butternut, Kaylessa, Ren and Vernar:

Not long after the scouts started to climb up the exposed hillside that leads to Eagle's Nest, a familiar voice calls out to them. Looking back and down the slope, they see Ren. Vernar studies Ren trying to ascertain if what he sees is an illusion or some sort of trick. From what the dwarven scout can tell, it really is Ren.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

At Sir Justin's battle cry, Vardra charges his mount Forelock at the battling greenskins. It is clear that the hobgoblins are fighting the others, though why is not clear. Still, it is encouraging to see them fighting one another.

Following in Sir Justin's wake, they cleave a bloody trail through the contending humanoids. The sudden attack, including those who dismounted and struck from behind, turns the battle into mass chaos. Many of the remaining orcs and goblins flee, while most of the ogres and hobgoblins seem inclined to continue fighting.

At the end of his charge, Sir Justin dismounts. Seeing this, Vardra follows suit. Looking about, he can see that Lucyus is doing likewise. The ogres seems less interested in fighting than the hobgoblins, so Vardra charges at them, hacking and stabbing with his bastard sword. More than one of the black-armored foes go down before his lethal blade.

Soon it is all over and Sir Justin's squad stands over a gore-covered killing ground. Vardra wipes the worst of the muck from his sword and shield, then sheathes the sword. As he does so, he sees Wimzy quickly turn to the work of healing the injured soldiers. Sir Justin commands that the fleeing opponents be allowed to go, as they can be followed to the rest of their army.
Sir Justin wrote:Turning to Lucyus and Vardra, Sir Justin adds, “I assume that you are both more familiar with this area. Which way to the the Eagle's Nest? We should check to make sure if any of your Squad mates went their for safety.”
"Aye, sir," Vardra replies and gestures in the direction they were heading. "On up the road there, then left at the fork. It would be good to reunite with our squad, sir."

Vernar notes that Ren has quickly accepted that he is known by the rest of the scouts and now wants to be brought up to speed on everything that has transpired to him and the group since having met. Unable to completely free himself of his suspicions, Vernar regardless does not feel this is the place to have such a lengthy conversation.

"We can certainly be tellin' that tale," Vernar replies after a moment, "but I not be thinkin' this be the spot fer it. We be tryin' t' regroup with any o' the others that might have survived the dragon."

Vernar indicates their destination as being the Eagle's Nest, and then looks around at their exposed position. "If you be willin' then you can follow us so we may all be relatively safer. Then we can be talkin' 'bout everythin' and anythin' t' hopefully bring back your memory."

If Ren is willing, then Vernar will turn and continue their trek. Otherwise, he will wait to see what the others want to do. He doesn't want to leave their friend and companion, amnesia or not, but Vernar has no desire to remain exposed for longer than absolutely necessary.

The gnome's response is odd, and a bit confusing, not unlike he himself. Listening to his words, Butternut realizes that he seems to have lost much of his memory of the last week or so. However, he also seems to have some recollection of Kaylessa at least, and some bits of leaving Crossroads, so that's good.

Thinking back, it seemed like he was fine last time she saw him during the battles the previous night. Butternut has heard tell of people losing their memory due to traumatic experiences, though never seen it happen before. "The dragon fear..." she mutters aloud, realizing that it must have been the cause.

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

The clash with the retreating enemy forces and the hobgoblins trying to get them to turn back around ends quickly and decisively. Many of the retreating army simply fled than fight while those who stuck around are defeated. Sir Justin and those riding with him took only minimal damage which Wimzy works to heal.

Seeing none of the other Squad members here, Sir Justin decides to ride to Eagle's Nest as it is a logical location to regroup.

"Aye, sir," Vardra replies and gestures in the direction they were heading. "On up the road there, then left at the fork. It would be good to reunite with our squad, sir."

With the destination noted, Mara Korvin takes the point once more as she leads the progression along. The battle site and the area where the last caravan the Squad took out are quickly passed. The now familiar road to Eagle's Nest lies ahead.

Butternut, Kaylessa, Ren and Vernar:

Near Eagle's Net, the scouts are reunited with Ren. The group talks on the road that winds its way up the side of the hill to the outpost. The gnome scout seems to have lost part of his memory and only vaguely knows the others. Vernar suggests that the group continue on to Eagle's Nest and continue the conversation there.

The scouts make their way up the road to the point where the gully that was partially burned during the hobgoblin attack. Using the same rope that the enemy tried to use to out flank the Squad, the scouts reach the area around the cave opening to the outpost. The wooded area is pretty much as the group remembers it. The supply wagons sit around the campfire area. There has been no sign of anyone being here.

Not long after that, movement is spotted down the base of the hill! Riders are approaching on horseback! The scouts quickly hide themselves to keep from being spotted. As the riders get closer it can be seen that they carry the banners of the Cynalonian Army! They are friends not foes!

The approaching riders begin their trek up the hillside at a steady pace. Once they get closer, the scouts can spot Vardra, Lucyus and Wimzy among them. The rest are unknown human males, with a single human female wearing woodsman gear.

From the riders perspective, the area at the base of Eagle's Nest seems deserted until the scouts come out from their cover.

Kaylessa looks on as Ren and the others speak. She casually looks about her bow still knocked and ready as she looks about.

“ Have you struck your head? You really do not recall what happened? How far back can you recall?” she asks the thief curiously.

The familiarity of the Eagle’s nest comes into view, as it does she can see the signs of their struggle. Looking to the others, Kaylessa will say. “See to the camp, I’ll keep watch for a time.” she says as she steps out from the others and watches the surrounding landscape.

The glint of metal draws her attention and she looks and sees a column of knights led by a woodsman. Bringing her hand to her face, shielding her eyes the forms begin to become more familiar. Turning back to the others, Kaylessa says, “ It seems our lost friends have made their way home and they have brought company!” she calls back to the others.

Lucyus

The skirmish is soon over and Lucyus, wipes the Blood from his axe with a rag from the dead. He looks about as the others soon finish their individual battles.

“It would appear that their army is suffering morale issues and has crumbled. You did well, Sir Justin. Our people will have a reprieve of their attacks if they do not regroup. That is if they stop running.” he says to the others.

With the destination noted, Mara Korvin takes the point once more as she leads the progression along. The battle site and the area where the last caravan the Squad took out are quickly passed. The now familiar road to Eagle's Nest lies ahead.

The follower of Ehlonna takes lead, “You will find many burnt bodies and shells of burnt caravans upon our way.” Lucyus says.

Riding for a time, Lucyus and the others follow Mara towards the Eagle’s nest. Lucyus will move up to Sir Justin and say, “ There is an outpost upon the top that could provide lodging. We will need to show you were the traps are located so that you may relay them to your superiors if we are to hold the outpost.

Soon the riders see Eagle’s nest up ahead. No one is in sight, “Perhaps they did not make their way back yet.” he says as he he sees movement ahead. The figure of Kaylessa is soon seen. “Seems I was wrong.” he says matter of factly.

Upon seeing the others, Lucyus will greet each in turn.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

With the battle done, Sir Justin decides that they will proceed on to Eagles Nest. A ranger Vardra has heard called Mara Korvin takes point. Since he is familiar with the route and eager to see if any of their other companions have made it back there, Vardra rides as close behind Mara as she appears willing to tolerate without crowding her or interfering with her job.

The split in the road is soon passed. Looking down the other branch, Vardra thinks he can still see debris from the first caravan they destroyed a couple days ago. Memories of that brutal battle flood through his mind and he has to struggle to clear them before he rides off the road.

Reaching the base of the steep approach to the cave entrance, they begin working through the series of switchbacks toward the top. As they ride, Vardra visually scours the edge of the plateau above seeking any sign of the others, but it seems deserted. Hearing Lucyus' words behind him, it seems the paladin has come to the same conclusion, and Vardra's heart sinks. He can only hope that any who made it proceeded to the top of the outpost and are waiting there.

Moments later, Kaylessa pops into view! Vardra rises in his stirrups and waves his arm above his head. "Hail and well met, Kaylessa! Have you see any of the rest of our companions?" He then spurs Forelock forward to reach the top of the rise in short order.

Butternut of the Foxburr Clan:
Kaylessa wrote:“ Have you struck your head? You really do not recall what happened? How far back can you recall?” she asks the thief curiously.
"Perhaps it was the dragon terror we all experienced last night that ruined his memories," Butternut says, her gaze shifting from the elf to the gnome. "Ren, you seemed to be fine through most of the day yesterday. Any recollection of the green dragon or the terrible fear it caused last evening?"

Moving as stealthily as they can manage in such exposed ground, the scouts approach the top of the hill. Butternut keeps her senses sharp for any sign of hostiles in the area, but none are found.

Reaching the wooded portion of the gully, she leads the team off the road and around to where the hobgoblins left their rope hanging a couple days previous. It hasn't been moved, so they use it to scale the embankment and enter the wooded area near the cave entrance.

A quick look about the plateau confirms that the wagons are still present and no sign of any others having been there is found. Butternut sighs a bit in relief as she finally relaxes visibly.
Kaylessa wrote: Looking to the others, Kaylessa will say. “See to the camp, I’ll keep watch for a time.” she says as she steps out from the others and watches the surrounding landscape.
Butternut nods in agreement and drops her pack near the cave entrance. She sets to building a fire and scouting the wooded area for food, as they could all use something fresh to eat.
Kaylessa wrote:The glint of metal draws her attention and she looks and sees a column of knights led by a woodsman. Bringing her hand to her face, shielding her eyes the forms begin to become more familiar. Turning back to the others, Kaylessa says, “ It seems our lost friends have made their way home and they have brought company!” she calls back to the others.
Hearing the elf's voice, Butternut makes her way to the edge of the woods near the embankment. Looking down the steep hillside, she can see a few of their companions coming up the winding road in the company of a larger military force. They don't appear to be captives, so hopefully these are Cynalonian soldiers.

Vardra appears to be riding fast up the last part of the hill, with others mostly behind him. Stepping out from the bushes, she can just barely see Wimzy sitting behind the large paladin, Lucyus. "Welcome home," she calls out with a snarky grin, waving her hand over her head.

"The boss is right," Butternut agrees. "Safety first, then talk." The tunnelrat will take point making their way up the hill, unless Vernar says otherwise.
"DRAGON?!" Ren squeaks. "I do believe the carnage I viewed earlier suggested caution but what is this about a bloody dragon? I certainly don't wish to be here by myself if there really is one around." All the while Ren is surveying the skies intently as if the dragon is just around the mountain's face. Caught off guard in the moment between his search of the skies and Butternut's brusque pace Ren startles forward anf scurries to catch up.
“ Have you struck your head? You really do not recall what happened? How far back can you recall?” she asks the thief curiously.
"Struck my head? Why heavens no I don't believe so. I would think there'd be quite the lump for there to be this much loss of memory. Though how much that is I can't quite gauge. I do remember Crossroads though the details of which are hazy and the timespan since then unknown. Little bits have been bleeding back into my mind but only certain things are oddly vivid in my mind when I come across certain... monuments." He ends in a questioning tone as he can't grasp the word he wants."The most recent of these moments was back at the destroyed caravan."

Post Continued:

April 16th, CR 569

The squad has been reunited! Most of them anyway. Lucyus, Vardra and Wimzy were making their way to Fort Graystone when they came across a pursuit unit commanded by Sir Justin Moore, a Knight of the Realm. They were following after the fleeing army taking out in stragglers along the way and making sure the area was clear for the allied forces to follow.
Lucyus wrote:“It would appear that their army is suffering morale issues and has crumbled. You did well, Sir Justin. Our people will have a reprieve of their attacks if they do not regroup. That is if they stop running.” he says to the others.
“We did well,” Sir Justin will stress. “An endeavor such as this is a team effort. Part of our mission is to locate any enemy strongholds so that we can lay siege to them for a change. This goblin lair you spoke of seems to be one such stronghold.”
Lucyus wrote:The follower of Ehlonna takes lead, “You will find many burnt bodies and shells of burnt caravans upon our way.” Lucyus says.
Mara simply nods her understanding as she continues to ride ahead of the main group.
Lucyus wrote:Riding for a time, Lucyus and the others follow Mara towards the Eagle’s nest. Lucyus will move up to Sir Justin and say, “ There is an outpost upon the top that could provide lodging. We will need to show you were the traps are located so that you may relay them to your superiors if we are to hold the outpost.”
“Good to know,” Sir Justin notes. “We'll make for this outpost so we can rest for the evening and plan our next move.”

Most of the scouts ended up on the side trail that connected the goblin lair to the Eagle's Nest outpost. Avoiding the enemy forces in the area, the scouts made for the Safety of Eagle's Nest. Having reached it, the scouts settle in for a night of rest after the harrowing day and previous night. As Kaylessa keeps watch she spies riders approaching bearing the banners of the Army of Cynalon. In short order the riders reach the base of the Eagle's Nest outpost and a reunited with the scouts.

“Greetings, I am Sir Justin Moore,” the knight calls out when he sees the scouts. “The Siege of Fort Graystone has ended and the enemy army is in retreat. Based on Intel provided by your companions it seems that some of the retreating enemy is making for the goblin lair down below. Come the dawn, we'll travel to this lair and assess the situation. We'll explore and confront enemies as need be. Other units will be following us tomorrow, so we can expect reinforcements. If the enemy forces are strongly entrenched, than we will withdraw and reconsider the situation. Let's get some rest, tomorrow promises to be a long day.”

Sir Justin will take the time to speak to each of the scouts in order to get to know them and find out any addition intelligence they might have learned.

GM Notes:

Any questions for Sir Justin or any of the other soldiers with him? There is one lone human female among the new arrivals wearing gear typical of a woodsman. She bears the Holy Symbol of Ehlonna.

Also, I've heard that Vernar's player won't be posting for the next month or so but plans to return.

Now what?

Caught off guard in the moment between his search of the skies and Butternut's brusque pace Ren startles forward anf scurries to catch up.
"Yeah, we'll discuss it later," Butternut replies brusquely. She's already in motion as she calls over her shoulder. "Come on!"

The scouts have reached the top of the rise and started securing the area near the cave entrance, when Kaylessa notifies them that riders are approaching from below. Looking over the edge of the precipice, Butternut notes Vardra near the head of the group of riders. Lucyus and Wimzy are further back with the main contingent. Soon, the leader of the patrol calls out.
Sir Justin wrote:“Greetings, I am Sir Justin Moore,” the knight calls out when he sees the scouts. “The Siege of Fort Graystone has ended and the enemy army is in retreat. Seems this knight has plans, and those plans include their little group. Butternut will reserve judgement until she sees him in action.

When Sir Justin approaches her, Butternut will fill him in a bit more. "I'm Butternut of Clan Foxburr. We met a dwarven historian name Sann recently. He said there's another dwarven fort in the area. Bollo's Spear, he called it. It might be near Falcon's Watch in the same way Eagle's Nest is connected to Bollo's Shield. Maybe not. Don't know.

"Oh, and there's a back way into the fort below, though that door's stuck. Opening it would likely be very noisy, so not a good recon entry. It does lead directly into the goblin chief's throne room, though."

When the opportunity arises, Butternut will talk to the human woodswoman. "It seems we share a calling. I'm Butternut, follower of Arvoreen. It looks like you serve Ehlonna. Have you traveled much in these lands?"

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

As they ride on from the destroyed caravans, Vardra can hear Lucyus discussing their recent actions with Sir Justin. There isn't much for him to add, so he passes the time chatting with the soldiers around him.

Having spotted Kaylessa at the top of the rise, Vardra urges Forelock up the remaining section of the steep road. As he crests the rise, he sees Butternut step out of the woods.
Butternut wrote:"Welcome home," she calls out with a snarky grin, waving her hand over her head.
"Thank you. Good to see you well, Butternut," Vardra replies.

The soldier rides over to the nearest tree or stump, dismounts, and ties off his horse. He scans the area for any signs of their other friends. "Any of the rest of our companions make it back here with you?" he asks the elven and halfling ladies. "Honestly, I had hoped that there would be more survivors..."

The commander of the patrol announces his intention to raid the goblin infestation in Bollo's Shield in the morning. It seems a good night's sleep is in order to prepare. With such a strong force, Vardra suspects that they will be well equipped to drive out the green-skinned vermin.

A question occurs to him, so Vardra approaches Sir Justin. "Sir? Is it your intention that we bivouac down here on this plateau, or up in the outlook's fortified quarters?"

"Well that's certainly reassuring. It's been a crazy day. Or is it days?" Ren plops down onto the grass near the top of the hill and will watch the others for now still confused and curious from the day's events.
