Operation: Graystone #30

April 16th, CR 569

The sight of a green dragon overhead has installed blind terror in the members of the Squad, causing them to flee randomly away from each other. Many were mounted on horses and so they could be miles away from each other after their fear based flight. Several of the Squad come to a stop and take stock of their suddenly changed situation.

Kaylessa:

Kaylessa finds herself alone in the woods. The terrain to her left sloops downwards slightly, while it remains level to her right. Looking around, Kaylessa can see two areas of illumination far off in the distance. The brighter of the two was behind her on her right, while the dimmer was behind on her left.

Turning, Kaylessa slowly starts to move back the way she came. As she moves along she listens for any out of the ordinary noise. Faint voices reach her ears, but they are too far away to clearly make out. Several speakers seem to be on her right, while a single on is heard off on her left.

Lucyus:

The mount that Lucyus and Wimzy were riding was caught up in the terror as well, sending it galloping off in a random direction, forcing the riders to hang on for dear life. Eventually, the fear fades and the horse comes to a stop. The mount pants heavily after the sudden burst of speed leaving them surrounded by forest.
Lucyus wrote:Dismounting he looks to Wimzy, “I don’t think we should light a fire. There is no telling what is out there tonight. Are you okay?” helping the cleric down from the mount.
“I think I lost my wits somewhere back there,” Wimzy claims as she gestures back the way you came. “Otherwise, I'm fine. You'll need a safe place to sleep and rest. My kind are good at hiding in the woods. I'll find a safe spot for myself.”

Both take a stock of their situation. Lucyus tends to the mount while Wimzy looks about. A faint light is noted nearby. Must be a campfire based on how it is flickering. Wimzy moves off through the underbrush to investigate...

Vernar:

The goblins that Vernar had heard speaking have moved past his position. Ready for a fight, the dwarven scout glides through the woods towards where he heard the speakers. The forest lightens and eventually gives way to a dirt road going off to his left and right. The goblins are moving away to Vernar's right.

Vernar moves along the edge of the forest for cover as he stalks after the goblins. After a few minutes, he catches up to them and he can see there are three of them. They are causally walking along, not paying attention to what is happening behind them. Much further up ahead, a faint fire can be seen, but its too far away to make out any details at this distance.

Vardra:

Vardra has set up camp for the evening and has finished his meal. Right before he could put his camp fire out, a noise in the woods reached his ears. It sounded like the snapping of a twig! Grabbing his sword, Vardra moves away from the light of his camp fire and into the shadows.
Vardra wrote:After eating, the soldier finds himself relaxing by the fire before going to bed. Suddenly, his reverie is interrupted by a sound in the darkness. 'Did a twig just snap? he wonders to himself. Alarmed, he draws his sword and backs away from the fire, trying to keep it between him and the source of the noise. "Who's there?!" he calls softly, hoping it's one of his friends though it could just as easily be a wild animal of some sort. Or one -- or more -- of the hobgoblins from the caravan...
The brush in the area of the sound starts to move as something is getting closer! The thicket suddenly parts and Wimzy steps into the clearing. Glancing back the way she came the Priestess calls out, “Over here Lucyus! I found Vardra!”

Turning back to Vardra, Wimzy adds with a mischievous smile, “Did you make enough supper for everyone?”

Butternut:

Butternut is also out in the woods. She's heard a female voice calling out for Janice, whoever that is.
Butternut wrote:Thinking fast, Butternut makes a fateful decision. "This way," she calls back softly and waits with sword and dagger at the ready in case this is a setup and things turn nasty.
“Janice?” the voice tentatively calls out once more as it starts to come closer.

The brush slowly parts and Butternut can see that the speaker is the goblin spell caster she spotted during the earlier attack. The female goblin is alone. When she sees Butternut, her eyes go wide and she turns and starts to run away!

Now what?

Butternut:

Having heard a female voice call out, Butternut had beckoned them nearer. She can hear the woman coming closer, who calls out again in a questioning tone.

Another tense moment passes, then a female goblin parts the underbrush and steps into view. Butternut recognizes her from the battle earlier as the spell caster who spoke to the dark elf. What did the drow call her...?

Just as the name pops into Butternut's head, the goblin spots her, spins on her heel, and starts to run away. "Zammie! Wait!" Butternut shouts in goblinese, sheathing her weapons as she chases after the woman.

Of course, it would be the goblin... Time for some character development!

Vardra chuckles. "No, I'm afraid not. But there's more food in my pack; we can probably whip up something for you and the paladin. I'm not really much of a cook." Stepping closer to the fire, he starts to dig through his saddlebag for food to share.

Vernar -

Moving quietly, Vernar emerges from the woods at the edge of a road. Not sure if this is one of the roads he is familiar with, he pursues the goblins while trying to get his bearings. He also sees what he suspects is a fire further ahead. For now, he is content with following the goblins. One certainly, the dwarf muses about his odds, Two likely. Three might be a bit tricky before any harm comes to me.

Vernar is curious to see what the goblins will do as they get closer to the fire. If it is a camp of some sort, their reaction will tell him more of what he needs to know. If they separate to ambush someone, Vernar will move to backstab a goblin by itself. If they seem to recognize the camp, Vernar will instead just continue to spy on them and hope to learn whatever plans they may have.

“He's back there somewhere,” Wimzy answers. “You tall folk don't move through the woods as well as we halflings can.”
Vardra wrote:Vardra chuckles. "No, I'm afraid not. But there's more food in my pack; we can probably whip up something for you and the paladin. I'm not really much of a cook." Stepping closer to the fire, he starts to dig through his saddlebag for food to share.
“Let me help with that,” Wimzy says. “Cooking is one of the things they taught me at the temple. We'll get something edible put together!”

Vernar:

Vernar continues to trial behind the goblins walking down the road. As they get closer to the source of the distant fire, they start to slow. They speak to each other in tense voices and then decide to retreat!

The goblins start to travel back the way they came, while not actually running, but at a brisk pace. Vernar is able to conceal himself in the woods along the side of the road. The goblins dash past seemingly unaware of his presence.

Going to follow the goblins or check out what they were running from?

Mentally cursing to himself, Vernar does his best to slip into the woods and not get spotted. A sudden retreat by the trio of goblins was not what he expected. Clearly they want no part of whatever lies ahead. As long as it's not... Vernar thinks a moment, was that a dragon earlier? He believes it was, but he never saw enough to be certain before the terror overtook him.

Waiting to make sure the goblins don't suddenly find their courage, Vernar will move towards the fire. He will stay along the woods, but keep the road in view as best he can. Moving silently, the dwarf will cautiously approach to see what was so fearful to the goblinoids...

“One less to find.” he says to himself as he gathers up the reigns of the horse and begins walking toward the sound of Wimzy’s call. When he sees the camp fire he will say “ Hello to the camp!” which he approaches his axe in hand.

Moments later, there is a voice from the edge of the firelight which Vardra recognizes as their paladin. "Welcome, Lucyus! Glad to see you made it. Wimzy's fixing a bit of food. This seems as good a place to spend the night as any, so feel free to pitch your tent."

The split up squad are starting to find each other...

Kaylessa:

Thanks to her sharp elfin hearing, Kaylessa can hear voices far off in the distance on either side of her. In one direction there are several speakers, while the other has just one. Bow and arrow at the ready, Kaylessa stalks off in the direction of the single voice.

Lucyus, Vardra and Wimzy:

Wimzy has found Vardra's makeshift camp and then starts to work on making a meal for all. After a time, Lucyus finds his way to the camp. The night is mostly quiet as the trio eat and settle in for the evening. Perhaps in the daylight, the group will be able to get a better idea just where they are at.

GM Notes:

Going to post guards for the night?

Butternut:

Butternut and Zammie have crossed paths...
Butternut wrote:Butternut is getting tired from running again so soon after fleeing from the dragon, but fortunately the goblin slows down a bit. "I was watching the fight from the woods, and the dark elf called you that. Is she 'Janice'? I didn't do anything with her! She probably ran from the dragon just like I did." Her breathing growing heavy, Butternut calls out plaintively, "Can we please stop running? We're just going to get more lost than we already are."
Zammie does slow down and stop. Its clear that the goblin is not used to such exertions.

“Yes, that is Janice,” Zammie answers through labored breaths. “She saved many of us from horrible lives. I owe her everything and if I find out that you are lying...”

After letting that point hang, Zammie takes a deep breath and adds, “You're kind is always killing my kind. Why should I trust you?”

Vernar:

The scared trio of goblins have passed Vernar's position. Once sure they are safely gone, Vernar continues in the direction they had been going.

After few minutes he can plainly see what the goblins had discovered. Vernar is approaching a caravan that is burning! It takes a few moments, but the dwarven scout realizes that this is the same caravan that the Squad had attacked before moving on towards a different caravan that the female goblinoids were attacking.

Vernar now knows just where he is at. He is approaching the caravan from the direction it was traveling which means if he stays on this road and continues in the direction that he is now going, he will eventually reach the Eagle Nest base. If he takes the left hand fork where the caravan was coming from, it will lead to the area where the other caravan was at before the dragon fear split up the group.

Likewise, the direction the caravan was going and where the goblins came from and are now retreating too, is the goblin lair the Squad escaped from a few days ago.

GM Notes:

If you check the larger combat map from post #28, Vernar is approaching wagon #1 of the caravan that the group sacked earlier.

Kaylessa:

The multi talented elf glides through the woods homing in on the voice that she heard. As she moves along, more of the conversation reaches her ears. The initial parts are hard to make out, but it is becoming clearer as she gets closer. It sounds like Butternut close by!
Her breathing growing heavy, Butternut calls out plaintively, "Can we please stop running? We're just going to get more lost than we already are."

But then another voice speaks, “You're kind is always killing my kind. Why should I trust you?”
The woods thins out a bit up ahead, but Kaylessa can see the back of Butternut up ahead. She is unarmed and the other speaker is somewhere past her. The woods blocks Kaylessa from seeing just who Butternut is speaking to.

Decisions, decisions, Vernar thinks to himself, but at least he is no longer lost. Those goblins were right to be scared, considering the damage we did earlier.

No matter which way Vernar goes, it is a long trek on foot and he is about ready to wrap up his day and attempt some sleep. Since the caravan wreckage is a good landmark, Vernar will scout the woods and try to find shelter. A fallen tree, a large boulder, anything he can put his back to and give him a view of the remains of the wagons would be ideal, as long as it is sufficiently off the road.

Vernar will find some branches, leaves, small brush, whatever he can do to camouflage himself and settle in after using a branch to foul up any tracks he left. The dwarf will smear dirt on his face and hands, and across the blades of his weapons so they do not glint off of any light. He will eat some of his rations and try to fall asleep with his axe on his lap and his other weapons easy to grab.

Butternut:

The halfling woodswoman merely raises an eyebrow at the goblin's threat. Butternut's killed enough goblins herself that she doesn't find them very threatening except in large groups.
Zammie wrote:After letting that point hang, Zammie takes a deep breath and adds, “You're kind is always killing my kind. Why should I trust you?”
If she wanted to anger Butternut, this does the trick. "We're always killing you?! Halflings?! 'Your kind' slaughtered my entire clan -- including my parents, my husband, and my children!" Her lip curls in a snarl. "The only reason I don't kill you where you stand is because you fought against your menfolk."

Butternut chuffs like a badger as she works to get control of her emotions. "Hell with it. If you want to spend the night out here by yourself, then go right ahead. I'm going back to that clearing to get some rest." Not waiting to see how Zammie reacts, Butternut turns and starts back toward where she had been resting a few moments ago.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

He's already had some dinner, but Wimzy's cooking is much better than his own so Vardra has a few bites of what she prepares. He'll make light conversation while the others eat, then help with the cleanup. He seems to recall a small trickle of a stream nearby; if he can find it without getting lost, he'll use it to clean up a bit.

As he prepares to bed down for the night, a thought occurs to Vardra. "Think we should set up watches, Lucyus? I wasn't going to when it was just me, but I'm a pretty light sleeper."

Butternut & Kaylessa:

Butternut wrote:If she wanted to anger Butternut, this does the trick. "We're always killing you?! Halflings?! 'Your kind' slaughtered my entire clan -- including my parents, my husband, and my children!" Her lip curls in a snarl. "The only reason I don't kill you where you stand is because you fought against your menfolk."
Upon hearing that, Zammie dashes off once more as fast as her legs can carry her. In moments she is lost from sight.
Butternut wrote:Butternut chuffs like a badger as she works to get control of her emotions. "Hell with it. If you want to spend the night out here by yourself, then go right ahead. I'm going back to that clearing to get some rest." Not waiting to see how Zammie reacts, Butternut turns and starts back toward where she had been resting a few moments ago.
Turning around, Butternut notices something just on the edge of her night sight. Butternut reaches for her crossbow, but stops when Kaylessa identifies herself. With the immediate area secure, the pair settle in for an uneasy night.

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

Elsewhere, Lucyus and Wimzy have located the camp Vardra set up. All three lack the ability to see in the dark like other races can, so they are more on edge. The trio settles in for the night, but every noise heard out in the forest is like an alarm bell to them. In spite of the tense situation, the night passes without incident.

Vernar:

Having discovered his location and realizing that the Eagle Nest base is too far away to reach during the night, Vernar moves off in the woods to find a safe spot to camp for the night. About seventy yards from the road, a fallen tree is found. It is thick enough to conceal him from anyone searching the area. A crude camp is set up with weapons at the ready. Some food and drink are consumed and Vernar tries to get some sleep.

At last, this long day reaches its conclusion.

April 17th, CR 569

Vernar:

The light is just starting to chase the darkness away when Vernar begins to come around. He again hears voices off in the distance. They seem to be coming from the road the caravan was on.

Daring a glance, Vernar can make out figures in studded leather armor moving towards the sacked caravan coming from the goblin lair. After studying them for a few moments, Vernar realizes that they are dressed much like the attack force that tried to capture Eagle's Nest a few days back.

Unlike the goblin scouts from last night, there are dozens of of the hobgoblins. They are methodically advancing down the road, searching both sides of the road for enemies. A pair of the hobgoblins come into forest close to where Vernar is hiding. They scan the area looking for something to attack. Vernar ducks back down behind the tree and waits as quietly as he can.

Kaylessa & Butternut:

Thankfully, Kaylessa does not need much sleep and the night passes quickly. Morning comes and the pair takes a better look around. The area that Zammie fled off towards comes out on the side of a road! This one is wider than the ones that you are used to seeing. After thinking about it for a bit, the pair realize that this is the main road that connects Fort Graystone with Gateway! The sun rose in the pair's left as they are standing, so that means Gateway is days away in that direction. Fort Graystone and the army assaulting it is to your right.

Kaylessa picks up a noise coming from your right. It is the sound of many feet walking. The sound is getting louder. They are coming this way!

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

Morning comes too soon and good quality sleep eluded the trio. But with the light of day, the group can get their bearings better. Mountains rise up not too much further along in the direction the groups mounts had carried them. Its a sheer rise in this location and not a direction you can go in.

The sun rises in the east, so that direction is easy to figure out now. If you are standing facing the mountains, than the sun rose to your left.

“I think we crossed the main road and rode deeper into the forest on the south side of the main road,” Wimzy theorizes. She turns around, putting the mountain to her back. “The main road should be straight ahead and Fort Graystone to our left.”

A quiet noise off in the distance starts to become louder and louder as the group discusses their options. The sound of many beings walking grows louder as time passes. The noise levels out and it becomes clear whatever is making the noise is not getting closer, but rather is passing by.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Butternut:

Zammie dashes off and -- in disgust -- Butternut lets her go. As she turns, something catches her eye. She reaches for her crossbow, but realizes that the faint shadow against the tree is Kaylessa. "Ah, you made it. Good."

The halfling woodsman shows her elven companion back to the nearby clearing. She begins setting up her tent and preparing for the night. "Haven't seen any of the others. You?" she asks Kaylessa. "Think we should take watches?"

Butternut's dreams are strange, unsettling. Uncertain what to make of them, she pushes them from her thoughts. Rising, she eats and renews her spells. It takes but a moment to recast Armor on herself; the security that it provides is more than worth the expenditure.

Zammie's trail leads them to the main road. Checking the sun's position, they are able to orient themselves -- they are facing south. The Eagle's Nest, Bollo's Shield, and the area where they raided the caravan the previous evening are all behind them to the north.
Kaylessa wrote:“This is not a good place to be.” She says as she recognizes the area. We are between the assaulting army our fort.” as she tilts her head and listens as she unconsciously pulls an arrow out and knocks it to her bow.
“We have company, take cover.” she says to the halfling.
The elf's hearing is sharper than her own, though Butternut soon hears the troops herself. Butternut nods and pulls back into a thicket as she readies her crossbow. Now to see who travels the road...

Fortunately, the night passes without incident. "Thank you," Vardra whispers to whatever gods may be listening. A quick bite, and then he starts to pack up the makeshift camp and saddle Forelock.
Wimzy wrote:“I think we crossed the main road and rode deeper into the forest on the south side of the main road,” Wimzy theorizes. She turns around, putting the mountain to her back. “The main road should be straight ahead and Fort Graystone to our left.”
With light, Wimzy deduces their location quicker than the soldier can manage. "Then I suppose we should head for the road; that should at least give us some idea which side of the road back to Eagle's Nest we're on."

Soon they hear the clamor of troops marching by. The road must not be far from the sound of it. "Wimzy, you're the quietest of us. Feel like taking a look?" Vardra asks softly, then glances over at Lucyus to see if the paladin has other ideas.

Vernar -

Vernar wakes with a start, not entirely sure he had been asleep. He calms his breathing and glances about without moving or disturbing his makeshift cover. He thinks he hears, what? Voices? He cannot make out who or how many, so he carefully picks his way to a better viewing spot, taking his weapons with him.

Not good, Vernar thinks. Settling himself behind a tree, he remains as quiet as possible. Using the tree for cover, he looks around to plot out a quick escape route if he should be spotted or otherwise discovered. He chooses the best path that will give him cover and move the furthest away from the direction the hobgoblins are going. Your move, he thinks, while steeling himself for possible flight from so many foes.

An uneasy night as passed, as the members of the Squad were split up due to the sighting of a green dragon. Dragon fear forced them and their mounts to blindly run away. But some of the Squad has found others in the woods. With the light of day, a rough lay of the land has been revealed and most have a good idea just where they are. As for the locations of the others, that is unknown.

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

Wimzy theorizes that the they crossed over the main road and are now in the woods to the south. The Eagle's Nest and the goblin lair were all on the north side of the road.
Vardra wrote:Soon they hear the clamor of troops marching by. The road must not be far from the sound of it. "Wimzy, you're the quietest of us. Feel like taking a look?" Vardra asks softly, then glances over at Lucyus to see if the paladin has other ideas.
“That's the last time I mentioned my kind being quieter in the woods than humans,” Wimzy mutters to herself. “I'll go take a look.”

With that, Wimzy scurries off through the underbrush. She returns about half an hour later with an alarmed look on her face.

“We don't want to go that way,” Wimzy reports. “There hundreds, if not thousands of orcs, goblins and ogres moving down the road. But get this, they are moving away from Fort Graystone! I wonder if the siege is over?”

Kaylessa & Butternut:

Further up the main road, the pair of Butternut and Kaylessa are discovering that beings are approaching their position. A few orcs are seen at first and then an ogre. The numbers continue to increase until the pair have no choice but to move deeper into the woods and hide. It looks like an army is passing the pair by, but this army is moving away from Fort Graystone!

Fortunately they are not searching the woods along the sides of the road so the scouts remain relatively safe. Snatches of conversation are heard here and there. The goblinoids are all complaining about how hungry they are!

Vernar:

Elsewhere in the woods, Vernar has discovered more hobgoblins dressed like the ones who attacked Eagle's Nest a few days ago. There are dozens of the goblinoids and they are scouring the area for enemies. Fortunately, they do not go too deep into the forest and Vernar remains relatively safe.

Time passes slowly, but finally the sounds made by the hobgoblins fade away. It seems they've moved past Vernar's position and towards the caravan the squad attacked yesterday. The hobgoblins are now between Vernar and the route to the Eagle's Nest base.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Vernar -

As time crawls by, Vernar begins to have a sinking feeling that he might be one of the only ones to have survived what could only have been a dragon attack. Either that, or with all of these goblinoids roaming about, the others were captured by one patrol or another.
Time passes slowly, but finally the sounds made by the hobgoblins fade away. It seems they've moved past Vernar's position and towards the caravan the squad attacked yesterday. The hobgoblins are now between Vernar and the route to the Eagle's Nest base.
Vernar waits a bit more to ensure there are no stragglers. Hobgoblins have proven to be very disciplined and he does not want to emerge into a rear guard unexpectantly. Once the normal sounds of the forest return or, barring that happening from all the recent combat, when the dwarf is certain he is once again alone, he will begin to follow the hobgoblins. If they move towards the Eagle's Nest, then he will see if they try to force their way in, otherwise Vernar will return there to see if any of the others have made it, or else gather up supplies and begin to put some miles between him and the front. If he's the last of all the squads that were sent out, then there is little left for him to do but look after his own survival.

Butternut:

Hiding in the woods just off the road between Crossroads and Gateway, it soon becomes apparent that the passing greenskins are no scouting party. The sheer volume of enemy troops forces Butternut and Kaylessa to pull further back into the woods. They are clearly retreating back toward Gateway, and the complaints about hunger make it clear why. The halfling flashes her elven friend a 'success' hand-sign.

After a bit, Butternut tires of watching all these foes march past. She pulls a bit further back and talks softly with Kaylessa. "Seems the siege is over. If any of the others survived, the Eagle's Nest is probably where they'd go. You good with that?"

If the elf doesn't disagree, Butternut will start making her way uphill toward where they had ambushed the caravan, and the Eagle's Nest beyond. As she travels, she'll watch for signs of enemies or possibly where their friends may have gone.

Vardra chuckles, but decides not to antagonize the diminutive woman. While she's away, there's not much to be done, so Vardra spends the time checking on Forelock and making sure that all of his gear is safely packed and stowed. He's become a bit bored and sits munching on an apple when she returns.
Wimzy wrote:“We don't want to go that way,” Wimzy reports. “There hundreds, if not thousands of orcs, goblins and ogres moving down the road. But get this, they are moving away from Fort Graystone! I wonder if the siege is over?”
The soldier listens carefully to Wimzy's report. The information is interesting indeed! "You may be right, Wimzy; gods grant that they've given up and are retreating." Vardra looks to see Lucyus' reaction, then makes a suggestion. "Since they're moving away from the fort, perhaps we should move toward it. We can assess just how long the troop train is, and perhaps be able to access the road sooner that way. Where do you think our eventual goal should be: the fort or the Eagle's Nest? It would be good to find our missing companions."

April 17th, CR 569

It is the morning after the Squads were separated by the green dragon. They now find themselves spread out across Graystone Pass and faced with new challenges.

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

Three of the Squad have found each other on the south side of the main road between Fort Graystone and Gateway. Wimzy does some scouting and discovers that the enemy forces are moving away from Fort Graystone!
Vardra wrote:The soldier listens carefully to Wimzy's report. The information is interesting indeed! "You may be right, Wimzy; gods grant that they've given up and are retreating."
“Looks like all those supplies we destroyed made a difference!” Wimzy adds excitedly.
Vardra wrote:"Since they're moving away from the fort, perhaps we should move toward it. We can assess just how long the troop train is, and perhaps be able to access the road sooner that way. Where do you think our eventual goal should be: the fort or the Eagle's Nest? It would be good to find our missing companions."
“Fort Graystone,” Wimzy adds with barely a thought. “Once we catch up with the rest of the army, then we can go search for the others with a lot more people. Otherwise, we'd just be following a horde of goblins and other critters who could turn on us at any minute.”

Once the camp is picked up, the trio mount up on their horses. Wimzy rides with Lucyus once more. The Squad moves at a leisurely pace parallel to the main road while still in the forest. In time, the forest starts to end and the mountains are forcing the group to move closer and closer to the road. The Squad is forced to stop and hide as they are getting too close to the road and enemy forces can still be seen moving along.

Lunch is eaten while the Squad keeps an eye on the traffic on the road. Finally, the number of enemies dwindle to a few and then stops all together.

Want to advance to the road or wait a bit longer to make sure the enemy forces have passed?

Butternut & Kaylessa:

Further along the road to Gateway, Butternut and Kaylessa are hiding in the woods to the north side of the road. The retreating enemy is moving past and heading east, most likely towards Gateway. Butternut and Kaylessa decide to try to reach Eagle's Nest and be reunited with the rest of their missing squadron, figuring that would be their destination as well.

Movement is slow given the sheer number of enemy troops close by. By late morning, the pair reach the area where Janice, Zammie and others attacked one of the caravans. Some smoke comes from the wagons, but given the number of enemies in the area, neither gets close enough for a better look.

The side road that leads to Eagle's Nest is reached and the duo parallel the road while moving through the woods. This side road is also filled with enemies who also seem to be going to Eagle's Nest or the goblin lair. It's too early to tell as that fork is still further along. Clearly some of those fleeing from Fort Graystone are taking this side road instead of staying on the main road to Gateway. As Butternut recalls, the road splits once more up ahead with the left hand fork leading up to Eagle's Nest while the right hand fork down to the goblin lair.

The pair quietly follow along and then come to a stop as loud voices are heard up ahead. They can only make out snatches of the conversation. It seems that the retreating army has found more of those hobgoblins in dark leather armor who attacked Eagle's Nest a few days back.

From what the scouts can tell, the hobgoblins are demanding that they fleeing army turn around and resume the siege. The goblins and orcs are demanding food and drink. An impasse is quickly reached which escalates into violence! The two sides are attacking each other!

Vernar:

It is after lunch time when Vernar feels it is safe to emerge from the woods. He moves as quietly as he can towards the road that leads to the goblin lair. From the edge of the forest he checks to see if the road is clear of enemies. It is.

The dwarven scout starts to head west, back towards where the then combined squad took out their last caravan. Vernar stays off the road as he moves along, either moving from rock to rock along the side of the road or just inside the woods.

At least he can see what remains of the empty caravan the Squad attacked last night. At this point he can also see the rear of the unit of hobgoblins, but their attention is focused on what is ahead of them, not behind.

Loud voices reach Vernar's ears, but they are too far away to make out clearly. It sounded like goblins, orcs and hobgoblins yelling at each other. This is quickly followed by the sounds of battle and metallic weapons striking each other! This battle draws more and more of the hobgoblins towards the road that leads back to the main road and away from road that leads to Eagle's Nest.

Butternut:

After finding the caravan destroyed by Zammie, Janice, and their friends, the halfling and elfin women start to work their way quietly uphill through the woods. Due to the vast number of goblinoids on the road, they have to stay well off the road, which slows travel. Fortunately, there are fresh berries and such growing about the area, so they can find the occasional snack as they go.

Butternut estimates that they are getting close to where the road splits to go to either the Eagle's Nest or Bollo's Shield when they hear loud rough voices arguing ahead on the road. Butternut flashes a quick handsign to Kaylessa, then ducks into a nearby bush to listen.

Piecing the snatches of yelling and grunting together, a picture of the disagreement begins to form. Hobgoblins are insisting that they all must return to the siege, but the orcs and goblins only want food. It doesn't take long for the groups to come to blows. Butternut signs to Kaylessa that she thinks they should wait and observe. If they are patient, she thinks, there may be an advantage to be gained here. Either way, they need to cross the road at some point to head up towards the Eagle's Nest, and that won't be possible while this fight is going on. She yearns to put quarrels into a few of them, but her crossbow is noisy enough that it could give them away; Kaylessa's bow is a much better choice for this kind of situation.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

The three companions have figured out roughly where they are, and Wimzy has scouted and reported on the large enemy army moving up the road away from For Graystone. Speculation turns to the possibility that the siege is over.
Wimzy wrote:“Looks like all those supplies we destroyed made a difference!” Wimzy adds excitedly.
"Yup, I reckon you're right, Wimzy," Vardra replies. "It's good to know we make a difference."
Wimzy wrote:“Fort Graystone,” Wimzy adds with barely a thought. “Once we catch up with the rest of the army, then we can go search for the others with a lot more people. Otherwise, we'd just be following a horde of goblins and other critters who could turn on us at any minute.”
Vardra nods. "Sounds good to me. You, Lucyus?" The paladin is on board as well, so the trio mounts up and starts to ride toward the fort. The horses make enough noise that they stay well away from the road for the time being.

A couple hours into the ride, the remaining Wyvern Squad member find that the terrain is driving them towards the road. The road is still full of the enemy, so they dismount, hide, and eat some lunch as they wait for the road to clear.

In time, the traffic dwindles and then stops. The three warriors wait a few more minutes, but no one else passes. Vardra turns to Wimzy, "You up for a bit more scouting, Wimzy? It would be good to know if there is any sort of rear guard still on the road."

Vernar is able to pick out a handful of words in goblin amidst the yelling. Such alliances are often fragile, Vernar muses as he looks at his options for getting closer. The hobgoblins seem distracted, but the dwarf does not want to ruin his luck so far in following them. If he can safely, in his estimation, get to a better vantage point to watch the carnage he will, otherwise Vernar will stay put and merely listen the ensuing battle.

The Squads are spread out across Graystone Pass.

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

The trio of Lucyus, Vardra and Wimzy are making their way through the forest along the south side of the main road connecting Fort Graystone and Gateway. Out on the main road, what remains of the broken enemy siege is walking east back towards Gateway. It's assumed that all the attacks on the caravans stopping the delivery of food and drink broke the siege.

The hills and mountains in the area forces the trio to ride closer and closer to the main road until they are forced to stop to avoid enemy contact. Finally, the procession moving down the road becomes fewer and fewer until no more can be seen.
Vardra wrote:In time, the traffic dwindles and then stops. The three warriors wait a few more minutes, but no one else passes. Vardra turns to Wimzy, "You up for a bit more scouting, Wimzy? It would be good to know if there is any sort of rear guard still on the road."
“Aye, aye Captain!” Wimzy says enthusiastically with an attempt at a salute. The halfling priestess than scampers off into the underbrush and is soon out of sight.

Long minutes pass and finally rustling is heard in the nearby bushes. A moment later Wimzy emerges once more.

“The road is clear!” Wimzy reports. “Blue Lady be praised! The way to Fort Graystone is open!”

Butternut & Kaylessa:

On the side road that leads from the main road towards the Eagle's Nest area, Butternut and Kaylessa are hiding in the woods. On the road itself, a portion of the army that was laying siege to Fort Graystone has encountered more of those hobgoblins in black leather armor the squads battled a few days ago. The hobgoblins order the other goblinoids to turn and around and continue to fight. The army, driven by thirst and hunger, want sustenance. Battle soon follows!

Butternut and Kaylessa simply hide and watch for a time. However, the fighting soon spills over into the woods and begins to draw every closer! The pair are forced to continue moving to the north away from the battle, but closer to their ultimate destination.

In time, the sounds of battle soften as distance is put between you and them. The forest opens up ahead and what looks like a road is spotted. Looking around from the safety of the forest, the pair can see up the road on their left is the remains of the caravan the Squads attacked yesterday. Past the caravan is the path that leads to Eagle's Nest. The way to the right leads back to the goblin lair.

The immediate area seems clear, but then movement is noted in the woods on the other side of the road! Several shadows are spotted moving about! Are they friend or foe?

Vernar:

Vernar has caught up to the unit of hobgoblins that were moving away from the goblin lair. He can hear the battle among the goblinoids off in the distance, but is too far away to see anything. Picking his way through the woods, Vernar tries to keep pace. The dwarven scouts darts ahead to a new hiding place and waits to make sure all is clear before moving further along.

Just as he is getting ready to move once more, Vernar hears a faint noise coming from back the way he came. Looking back that way, Vernar catches the glimpse of a small shadow darting from tree to tree. The figure is also stealthily moving through the woods, much like Vernar has been doing.

Finally, Vernar is able to get a good look at this new arrival only to realize that it is a familiar face! Moving closer to Vernar's hiding place is Ren, the gnome scout!

A moment of sheer and utter terror. An image of massive powerful wings spread wide. The smell of smoke and brimstone. Then all went blank. Running, fleeing, legs moving faster than they ever have before. I must get away.

How long have I been running? What am I running from? What was I doing? Ren's legs begin to slow as his mind begins to steady. He looks around, surrounded by trees on all sides he must be in a forest of some kind?

Where the hell am I? I was traveling with...someone. Or were there others? Wait. Why was I afraid? What was I running from? As his thoughts begin to coalesce and he races for answers he begins to realize he doesn't remember much of the last couple weeks. He knows he had come from Crossroads and was scouting, but with and for whom he is unsure. He remembers dark caverns, and a large Dwarven hall. He remembers some conflict but he can't quite fix any images in his head. Well, whatever the reason, he knows he needs to focus cause he is most likely still in danger. Luckily forests make for easy natural cover and he begins to fade into the bushes and move around quietly. He knows he needs to find the edges of this copse of trees and assess the situation.

After some time he notices another figure crouched amidst the trees. He seems to be unaware and surveying or watching something else. Ren decides he will try to get a little closer to see who or what it is. As he draws near, he notices that it's a dwarf hiding there who turns his head as Ren rustles a bush in passing. Crap. Did he spot me? Were we fighting dwarves in their hall? Ren hides, holding very still, hoping that the dwarf doesn't notice him.

Butternut:

The memory of the battle with the hobgoblins a couple days ago is vivid in Butternut's memory. That black leather armor is unmistakable. She watches as the meeting between the hobgoblins and the orcs and goblins turns to bloodshed.

As the fighting draws closer, Butternut pulls back further into the woods, always trying to maintain sight to the edge of the battle. Should she find a straggler or two, she intends to reduce their numbers by that much. Disappointingly, their numbers are too great for her to be able to do more safely. 'Would that I could slay the lot of them...'

The battle pushes them northward for a time, but then draws away as the participants die off on both sides. At least they've moved in the right direction. It isn't far before she and Kaylessa draw within sight of the road to Bollo's Shield. There don't appear to be any goblinoids on the road up here, though the caravan they attacked last night is off in the distance to the left.

Butternut and Kaylessa pause to watch the road for a few minutes, and it's a good thing that they do. Movement is spotted in the bushes on the other side. From what she can tell, Butternut suspects that there are at least two beings over there - possibly more - though not likely more than a handful.

Gliding over closer to her elven companion, Butternut whispers with a gesture toward the moving shadows, "I don't think they're with the goblinoids. Cover me, I'll go take a look." Pausing for an opportunity to do so without being seen, Butternut slips across the road and into the bushes on the other side.

___________________________________________________________________
If Kaylessa wants to cross too, Butternut will ready her crossbow and wait for her in the bushes. If not, she'll ready shortsword and dagger, and slowly make her way toward where the movement was spotted.

Welcome back, Taylor!

Based on the receding sounds, it appears that the formerly-siegeing army has passed their position. At Vardra's request, Wimzy disappears into the underbrush to check the road. A smile crosses his face; the diminutive woman's cheery attitude is quite refreshing.

Some minutes later, there is a rustling in the bushes nearby. Vardra's hand moves to the handle of his sword, though he hopes this is just Wimzy returning. Sure enough, the halfling pops out and he relaxes.

The slightest noise and faintest movement of a shadow that shouldn't be right there catches Vernar's attention. Hmmm, he ponders, wonder who this is? Expecting any sort of foe from a drow elf to a brave goblin, Vernar tries to circle back around and approach from a different angle. He doesn't quite get as far as he wants before he sees the origin of the shadow. Could that be.. Ren?
Finally, Vernar is able to get a good look at this new arrival only to realize that it is a familiar face! Moving closer to Vernar's hiding place is Ren, the gnome scout!
"Ren?!" the dwarf calls out in a harsh whisper, while trying to move closer. Vernar will use a silent signal for both of them to group up a little further back. He does not want to risk a conversation even in hushed tones too close to any of the fighting.

With the huge looming mountains on either side, Ren realized he was in some sort of forested valley passage. There won't be a lot of room to maneuver if there are more out looking for me. I'll have to try and fall back and circle around anyone till I can get my bearings.

As Ren prepares to make his move, he checks back on the Dwarf who has moved a bit closer and intently focused on Ren's position. In a small panic Ren begins to run away back toward the northern fork of the road he had been skirting in the woods. Crashing through a few bushes, he only hears a harsh voice and a wave of the hand as the dwarf falls away from view. With a couple Zig zags between trees and changes of direction. Ren works his way in a looping fashion towards the north west having been traveling southwest.

After a little bit of time Ren rests and recollects. Who was that dwarf waving at? I didn't see any other movement, was he actually by himself? Something about those piercing eyes was familiar as well. Maybe I should try to work back and follow him. If I head South I should intercept him again. And so Ren redirects to try and silently follow the dwarf from another angle.

The Siege of Fort Graystone has been broken! Enemy forces are now retreating, forcing the split up Squadron to lay low.

Lucyus, Vardra & Wimzy:

The trio are waiting for the enemy to pass by their position. Finally, the long wait is over and the road seems clear. Mounting up once more, the Squad moves through the forest and onto the main road. The horses are urged up to a comfortable riding speed as the squads starts toward Fort Graystone.

About half an hour into the trip, distant figures appear on the road up ahead. It seems that riders are approaching you. While the riders themselves cannot be clearly seen, a few are carrying banners with them. These banners carry the symbol of the Cynalonian Army!

The two groups of riders get closer until they reach shouting range. The riders coming from Fort Graystone slow to a stop. There are about a dozen of them. One of the riders moves a bit ahead of the others.

“Identify yourselves!” the rider challenges. “Make yourselves known!”

Butternut, Kaylessa, Ren and Vernar:

Elsewhere, several other Squadron members are closing in on each other. Vernar thought he saw Ren trailing behind him, but when he called out and gestured towards the gnome he surprisingly turned dashed off in the other direction!

Across the road, Butternut and Kaylessa can see movement in the shadows of the forest on the other side of the road. They carefully cross the road and go back into the forest near Vernar's position. The scouts are reunited while wondering what to do about Ren. He moved back down the road the way he and Vernar had come. It was as if he didn't know who Vernar was.

Now what?

Coming to a pause, he draws reign. “ Riders.” he says as he brings his hand up to his brow to block the sun from view. A smile begins to etch across his face, “It’s the army! Our army… the siege must have been broken!”

As the groups draw closer, he calls out.
“Identify yourselves!” the rider challenges. “Make yourselves known!”
“Team Wyvern and Chimera. How is the status of Fort Graystone?” The Paladin calls back.

Kaylessa
Butternut and Kaylessa pause to watch the road for a few minutes, and it's a good thing that they do. Movement is spotted in the bushes on the other side. From what she can tell, Butternut suspects that there are at least two beings over there - possibly more - though not likely more than a handful.

Gliding over closer to her elven companion, Butternut whispers with a gesture toward the moving shadows, "I don't think they're with the goblinoids. Cover me, I'll go take a look." Pausing for an opportunity to do so without being seen, Butternut slips across the road and into the bushes on the other side.
Kaylessa looks on as the battle unfolds, moving northwards as the screams and sounds of battle are heard. Soon enough, the sound dies down and Butternut sees movement and soon asks the elf to cover her. Knocking an arrow, Kaylessa watches as Butternut moves forward across the way.

Whistling slightly she tries to catch Butternut’s attention and motions to Butternut that she will be coming over to that side.

Kaylessa slides through the undergrowth and then the road then the underbrush once again.

She will look around and see what she can see.

Butternut:

Checking both ways, Butternut scampers across the road and into the bushes beyond. She can make out Vernar moving through the woods a little way off and flashes a hand-sign of recognition to him. It is good to see him; she was worried that others of their group might not have survived the encounter with the dragon. There are still many to account for, though.

Hearing a soft whistle from back the way she came, Butternut sees Kaylessa preparing to cross, so she readies her crossbow, gives the come-ahead signal, and holds her position. The elf crosses the road quickly and quietly while Butternut scans the area for any threats. Fortunately, none appear, so Butternut moves closer to the dwarf.

"You alone, Vernar?" she whispers, glancing around. "I thought I saw someone else. The road is clear for the moment."

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
Lucyus wrote:“Let us hope that the fort is still in reasonable shape.” he adds looking to Vardra and Wimzy.
"It is to be hoped," Vardra agrees. "It seems likely, though it is hard to know how much damage the enemy did before retreating."

With the way open, they begin the long ride back to Fort Graystone. It is a beautiful day, and Vardra finds himself enjoying the warmth of the sun on his skin and the beauty of their surroundings. From the road coming down out of the mountains, the flatlands spread out before them like a green carpet.

Not long into the trip, they spot riders coming in their direction up the road. Their banners mark them as Cynalonian Army! The sight of allies is heartening, and Vardra waves his hand over his head to get their attention. The paladin, Lucyus, confirms with relief that those approaching are from their army.

As they get closer, the riders stop and call out for identification. As leader of the party, Lucyus takes responsibility for responding. Vardra looks over to Wimzy and smiles, while waiting patiently for their identities to be confirmed. He's looking forward to getting back to the fort and spending a little time out of the wilderness.

Would the squad have been given some kind of call-sign to confirm their identity in such a situation?

Vernar -
Vernar thought he saw Ren trailing behind him, but when he called out and gestured towards the gnome he surprisingly turned dashed off in the other direction!
"You alone, Vernar?" she whispers, glancing around. "I thought I saw someone else. The road is clear for the moment."
"Did you see...?" Vernar looks back the way he saw Ren dash off. At least he thought it was Ren. Then he suddenly realizes that he is reunited with Butternut.

"Um, yeah. I have been alone. Until now." Vernar still looks a bit confused. "Unless I be losin' my blessed mind, I swear that was Ren," he indicates by pointing where he ran off. "Unless it be an illusion, or somethin' sinister..." Vernar lets the last trail off as he contemplates everything that might be out in the woods with them.

Vernar nods to Kaylessa after another moment, then continues speaking to both of them quietly. "It be good t' be seein' both of you. I feared for the worst with everyone."

Approaching the dwarf, Vernar's reaction seems confused initially, but then takes stock of the situation.

"Wait. Ren?" Butternut asks, seeking confirmation. "He's here?"

"Yeah, good to see you too, partner." Butternut glances over at Kaylessa. "We weren't sure anyone else had survived the dragon."

"So what's this about Ren?" Butternut scans the surrounding underbrush, half expecting the mischievous gnome to pop out at them.

Vernar -
"So what's this about Ren?" Butternut scans the surrounding underbrush, half expecting the mischievous gnome to pop out at them.
"Headed off that way," Vernar responds, again pointing in the direction he last saw the gnome. "Acted like he not be knowin' it was me or somethin'..."

Vernar can relate, after everything that has happened recently, he might not be sure about much either. Still, Ren must've seen him before he bolted. Something is just not adding up.

"Maybe he still be sufferin' from some effect or other from the dragon," Vernar offers, "or somethin' else happened entirely."

With that, Vernar wants to re-attempt to find the gnome, but that might not be the biggest of their problems right now.

"So I be seein' a bunch o' goblinoids moving everywhere," Vernar says. "They seem t' be broken an' routed, but there be too many wanderin' for me t' get anywhere easily. We need t' be seein' if any o' the others made it."

Butternut looks off in the direction Vernar points, but doesn't see any sign of the missing gnome.

"Yeah..." Butternut thinks back to her own terror from the dragon. What if that didn't wear off? What kind of hell would that be. She shakes her head. "I hope he's okay -- wherever he is."

"We saw fighting. The hobs didn't seem to like the others giving up. Good seeing them kill each other off," Butternut says, grinning darkly. "I think any of ours that survived would likely head for the overlook." Butternut nods up the road toward the Eagle's Nest entrance. "At least there are supplies there; make a good base to search from."
