The HIVE has been defeated! The victors now take a look around the formerly buried Elder City of Shelvestra.

On the deck of the Dauntless, Captain Roma asks if anyone was rescued from the clutches of the HIVE.

She pauses a moment longer, her face showing her grief. "I'm sorry, Captain, but the only captives we found were being used as food for the Hive larva. They are are beyond suffering now."

“It is as Kylie stated, Captain,” Lilia quietly adds. “There was nothing to be rescued. Those deemed unworthy to become part of the HIVE were consumed by them.”

“That is disappointing,” Captain Roma admits. “But not entirely unexpected given the nature of this particular foe.”

Seeing Lilia take flight to return to their companions, Kylie rises into the air. She pauses for a moment looking at Captain Roma. "Thank you, Captain. That was an impressive display. It was a pleasure meeting and fighting alongside you and your fine crew."

“You are most welcome, Lady Kylie,” Captain Roma responds. “The Dauntless will remain on guard for a while longer while this mission wraps up. Then we shall depart. I have much to report to my superiors in Alphatia.”

“Oh, and Your Majesty,” Captain Roma directs towards Lilia, “we shall meet again in the ruins to the north of the Sylvan Ream in three days. I have not forgotten what you told me earlier. Those slavers will regret daring coming to Arret.”


Kylie and Lilia depart the Dauntless. The warship starts to circle the Elder City while it waits for everyone else to conclude their business. After a short discussion, Kylie, Lia and Lord Sharadin return to the groups arrival point. There Sherry, Terry and Talen are on guard underneath the defensive shield of a Spell Engine. Talen wants to examine the city to city Pillar Artifact and the second of the smaller ones before leaving.

The elfin priests go forth to see if any souls need guidance into the afterlife. More eggs are broken and the last few larva slain as they work their way through the egg field. While this is going on, the dwarves rush off in search of the treasure of the black dragons!


Talen and those with him, Lord Sharadin for sure, reach the city to city pillars. Like he has done before, Talen links with the Elder Artifact. Silvarn, Saryn and Quirin are present as well. Lothtor remained back where the last of the black dragons fell.

“Other than the recent use by the HIVE to reach Shillesta this device has not been used for a very long time,” Talen reports. “There are only two possible destinations from here. One is Shillesta up by the Sylvan Realm. The other is Shullindra, the last of the three Elder Cities left on Arret. From what I can tell, it is currently underwater. That's weird. The Elder Artifact is asking if I wish life support to be enabled or not. That giant pillar up in Shillesta asked me the same thing. There are no records from more than 65 million years ago.”

“I can ssssense sssomething here,” Quirin will say. “But communicating with it is beyond my ability. How sssstrange.”


While the city to city teleporter sits roughly in the center of Shelvestra underneath the large rift, the second Pillar Artifact is on the opposite side of the city from the first. The first was roughly in the northeast corner, the second Pillar Artifact in the southwest. There are signs that numerous HIVE guards were placed around the second artifact like there had been about the first. Most likely the last group of HIVE you fought was the guards from this distant Elder Artifact.

However, unlike the other Pillar Artifact, this one is translucent! Its there, but you can see right through it! Due to this, everyone is hesitant to get to close to the strange sight. Fortunately, Talen just needs to be near to it to communicate with it and not actually touch it.

The data records indicate that his Pillar Artifact is only partially here. Meaning, its also partially somewhere else. The records confirm that one of the Argent copies arrived at this Pillar Artifact at the same time as another one did at the northeast artifact. However, that Argent then was sent to the somewhere else this Pillar is also at.

It seems that this Pillar Artifact is stuck between two different places. Sometimes more of it is here, sometimes more of it is there. The Pillar Artifact can be used as an arrival point, like it was for this particular Argent. However its been damaged and cannot be used as a place to travel from. So assuming this other Argent survived the trip to where ever this Pillar Artifact is connected to, she could not use it to get back here. Passing through is Pillar Artifact is a one way trip. But to where?

The records are also clean from more than 65 million years ago. The strange phasing of this particular Pillar Artifact started twenty thousand years ago. It's also noted that the elves were expecting this other Argent to be another HIVE Queen. Turns out that was not her fate at all.


While traveling through the ruins of this Elder City, a few other buildings were unearthed. Unlike Shillesta far to the northwest, the stone here is not red nor does it glow. Near one of unearthed buildings, but then again collapsed, both Talen and Quirin sense something. There is something buried underneath the collapsed building!

GM Notes:

Admittedly, I covered a lot of ground here, but the information gleamed from the two Pillar Artifacts had been revealed earlier in the HIVE interludes. That's part of the reason I did it at that time to help speed things long afterwards.

Only a handful of souls were aided by the priests. There really wasn't much left after the fireballs.

The dwarves return bags full of gold coins and some silver. There were so many coins in the dragons nests that they didn't have enough bags for all the silver or any of the copper ones!

Now what?

[Lilia]

Lilia:

Getting ready to depart the Dauntless.

“You are most welcome, Lady Kylie,” Captain Roma responds. “The Dauntless will remain on guard for a while longer while this mission wraps up. Then we shall depart. I have much to report to my superiors in Alphatia.”

“Oh, and Your Majesty,” Captain Roma directs towards Lilia, “we shall meet again in the ruins to the north of the Sylvan Ream in three days. I have not forgotten what you told me earlier. Those slavers will regret daring coming to Arret.”

“Thank you, Captain,” Lilia responds. “Your aid is most appreciated.”

Lilia allows herself a small smile. With the aid of the Alphatians, the slavers are going to be in for a surprise when they arrive. One that they will not like!


Several make the trip back to our entry point to the Elder City. Talen and the twins are waiting there. The dwarves rush off in search of the slain dragons' treasure. Their lust for gold does not surprise Lilia at all. Many of the priests go forth to finish destroying the HIVE eggs and slaying of larva. Last rites are given to their victims, but only a handful of these remain. The fire magic used to destroy the HIVE saw to that.

After a time, Lilia spots many of the others making their way towards the large pillars further away in the city. The dragons and Quirin have joined them, so Lilia goes to see what is going on. Talen can communicate with this larger pillar like he did the smaller ones.

“Perhaps one day, this larger artifact will see use again,” Lilia wonders. “It does connect this place to the Elder Ruins to the north of the Sylvan Realm. But the arrival point is buried beneath the earth once more. It would take much work to uncover it but ultimately would connect the two.”

“Assuming that they mean life support in the same manner as Spell Engines, the device is telling you that the arrival point is inhospitable,” Lilia adds in regards to other Elder City Talen called Shullindra. “Being underwater could explain that.”

“I can ssssense sssomething here,” Quirin will say. “But communicating with it is beyond my ability. How sssstrange.”

“How interesting,” Lilia mutters, raising an eyebrow as she does so. The couatl can sense the devices, but cannot interact with them.


From there its on to the other Pillar Artifact. It sits on the other side of the ruined city from the first, which makes sense Lilia guesses. It would make no sense for them to be close together. However, something very strange is going on here! The Elder Artifact is only partially there! Talen indicates that this pillar is stretched between two different places! One of the other Argents arrived at this Pillar Artifact and then was passed on to where ever the rest of this device is at. She was not taken over by the HIVE but has gone elsewhere.

“There is the chance that this Argent survives in the place this portal leads to,” Lilia surmises. “But this cannot be used to get back from there. I think we should leave this alone for now. We don't have enough information to make a plan of action. We are needed back in the Sylvan Realm anyway to deal with the slavers.”


On the way back to the arrival point, both Talen and Quirin sense something. Given that Quirin can only sense Elder Artifacts while Talen can speak to them, perhaps another device has been buried here?

“Any idea what it is?” Lilia inquires.

[Laucian]

Laucian

Laucian mentions that it would be good to check in with Talen and the twins. Lia and Sharaden volunteer to do so. "I'd like to join you as well," Kylie says to Lia. She will float along as they travel back to the portal where they initially arrived.

Laucian watches as Kylie and Lord Sharadin fly away towards the Defensive bubble. A hint of a smile etches across his face. “Young love. Is there nothing more valued at ones’ age?” says to himself though others about him could hear his words.

He pauses a moment and stows his bow in a quiver, as he looks to Gweyr, ‘Even love at any age is valued more than others.’ he thinks to himself as he draws his black bladed longsword.

“I'm not sure much remains...,” Lilia starts to say before catching herself. Onas is doing the appropriate thing for a priest to do. Something that Lilia herself is now since the change. The spirits of the dead need to be guided into the afterlife, even if they are not elves. “You are right. We must at least make the attempt, Onas. We owe the that much.”

“With respect, I will not join you in this. I do not believe Ehlonna would wish it so.” he says evenly and honestly. “We would be extending a courtesy that we would have not received and our fortunes been different.” As he slowly walks away he hears the voice fill the dark giving the ranger cleric pause. He looks back finding Lilia as the source. Surprise comes to the ranger’s face. Somehow it is fitting though a queen who can captivate with word and song alike.

Laucian reaches Gweyr and asks if she needs some help. Casting Flameblade in his off hand, Laucian begins moving through the eggs helping what has not been shattered already.

When Talen arrives and the others begin looking into the ruins. Laucian will attend and observe. Curious of the Dragon’s nest’s Laucian will ask the dwarves if there were any swords or other weapons within their nests.

[Kylie]

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:

“You are most welcome, Lady Kylie,” Captain Roma responds. “The Dauntless will remain on guard for a while longer while this mission wraps up. Then we shall depart. I have much to report to my superiors in Alphatia.”

Kylie nods at Captain Roma's commentary, but has nothing to add before flying back down to rejoin the rest of the team. She is pleased to know that the Dauntless will be on their side when it comes time to face the slavers.

Kylie listens silently to the good-natured jousting between brother and sister with a half smile on her face. Talen reports that there was no attempt to attack them, to which she responds succinctly. "Good."

Talen jumps at the chance to investigate the other Elder artifacts in the cavern. Unfortunately, this means leaving the twins behind. Kylie looks over to Sharadin for his thoughts before departing with Talen and Lia.

“Uhm, has anyone seen these other teleporters?” Talen asks a bit sheepishly. “I don't know where they are at.”

"No, we haven't seen them yet. We've only explored a fairly small portion of the cavern so far, so we'll have to do a bit of searching."

After some time, they find the larger of the three pillar artifacts in the cavern, meeting up with Lilia, Onas, Silvarn, Saryn and Quirin. Talen communicates with it, though curiously, Quirin cannot. He informs them that it connects to Shillesta, which they visited a few days ago, and another city named Shullindra. However, this city is underwater! The pillar offers a life support function.

“Assuming that they mean life support in the same manner as Spell Engines, the device is telling you that the arrival point is inhospitable,” Lilia adds in regards to other Elder City Talen called Shullindra. “Being underwater could explain that.”

Kylie pauses to consider the information. "Do you think the life support would allow you -- us -- to explore that city safely, Talen? Also, can you get any sense of where Shullindra is relative to the rest of the world?"

After leaving the larger pillars, they continue to explore the cavern. Onas seems focused on finding any victims of the HIve and seeing their souls on to the afterlife. Sadly, there seem to be precious few.

Reaching the far end of the cavern, they find the other pillar that Talen had sensed as both being here and not. It quickly becomes apparent why: the pillar formation is transparent, and only fully here part of the time! Talen reveals that one of the missing Argents passed through this portal, so she may yet be alive.

“There is the chance that this Argent survives in the place this portal leads to,” Lilia surmises. “But this cannot be used to get back from there. I think we should leave this alone for now. We don't have enough information to make a plan of action. We are needed back in the Sylvan Realm anyway to deal with the slavers.”

"Talen, can you tell where the other end of it is, geographically? That might help us plan our later exploration."

Once done here, they head back toward the arrival point where Sherry and Terry wait, collecting the rest of their companions as they go. Not surprisingly, it seems the dwarves have found some treasure. Suddenly, Talen and Quirin both sense something buried in the vicinity of some collapsed buildings. Lilia voices the question on all their minds, so Kylie waits to see if an answer is forthcoming.

[Talen]

Talen:

After waiting for what feels like months, the others have returned to our foothold in the Elder City. Kylie and Lia are among them, along with Lord Sharadin, and that makes Talen happy. He is eager to check out what this lost city can tell him. Talen sets off to find the other Pillar Artifacts, but doesn't know where they are at.

"No, we haven't seen them yet. We've only explored a fairly small portion of the cavern so far, so we'll have to do a bit of searching."

“Oh,” Talen says. “Guess we have some exploring to do!”

And the search is on! By the time the larger city to city device is located others have joined in on the search. Talen takes a good look at this larger Pillar Artifact. He only caught a glimpse of the one in Shillesta and that was before his change. This larger formation is something like three times bigger, but seems to work the same way. However there are only two other destinations that could be reached from here.

“I'm not sure if it would really be worth it,” Talen counters. “I mean this one is hard to get to as is the other up north. The connection under Karn's Keep seems like the best one to use.”

“I guess that makes sense,” Talen slowly agrees. “Perhaps the Elders had their own version of Spell Engines?”

Kylie pauses to consider the information. "Do you think the life support would allow you -- us -- to explore that city safely, Talen? Also, can you get any sense of where Shullindra is relative to the rest of the world?"

“Possibly?” is all that Talen can say. “I can always try it and find out. As for where Shullindra is at, its far to the south and east. There are other Pillar Artifacts in the area, but they are all underwater. I think its in the middle of the ocean!”


Continuing on, we eventually find the other Pillar Artifact. Or rather what is left of it! It's only partway here and somewhere else at the same time. It seems that one of the other Argents, one that we have yet to meet, passed through this portal and ended up somewhere else. Just where Talen cannot say for sure. Even worse, this one is a one way trip!

“Whatever caused this to happened, also happened twenty thousand years ago,” Talen states. “Yet another piece in the weird puzzle. Twenty thousand years ago half the Elder Cities and the Pillar Artifact vanished. This one here seems to be the sole connection between the artifacts that remain and the ones that vanished. Seems to me that where ever this goes, the rest of the stuff that vanished is there as well.”

"Talen, can you tell where the other end of it is, geographically? That might help us plan our later exploration."

“No, not at all,” Talen tells Kylie. “The connection to the web of pillars on Arret ends here. It does not go through this portal. What lies beyond, even what conditions are over there, where ever that is, are completely unknown. I know you want your friend to be safe, but I can't give you any answers.”


With the tour complete, we start to make our way back to the arrival point. Along the way, Talen senses something. Quirin as well. It seems the couatl can sense the Elder Artifacts like Talen can, but cannot interact with them.

“There is something here,” Talen calls out. “It's an Elder Device....”

Talen pauses as if listening to something no one else can hear.

“Any idea what it is?” Lilia inquires.

“It's asking me questions! It told me that is was 'scanning',” Talen will slowly answer. “Than it said 'identity confirmed. How can I assist you?' What the heck does that mean?”

[Onas]

Onas Brightsword:

“With respect, I will not join you in this. I do not believe Ehlonna would wish it so.” he says evenly and honestly. “We would be extending a courtesy that we would have not received and our fortunes been different.”

"Very well, friend Laucian," Onas replies. "We will meet up with you later." He is not fully knowledgeable regarding the dogma of Ehlonna's faith, so accepts her priest's decision on the matter.

Lilia's singing proves a pleasant counterpoint to the grim nature of his task. About half-way down the length of the cavern, they find that Talen and those with him have met Silvarn, Saryn and the coatl at a larger set of pillars. Onas joins Lilia in going to meet them. Talen relates what he learns from the pillars, and discussion ensues, though most of it goes over his head. It does seem that it is connects to an Elder city that they have not yet visited. However, that city is apparently underwater, and will thus be difficult to visit or explore.

Continuing on, then weave back and forth across the cavern and eventually reach the far end. Sadly, he has found less than a handful of other victims of the Hive, and so has performed rites for those mere few. What they do find is another pillar formation, but this one seems ghostly, like some kind of magical image. Talen explains that it is trapped halfway in this place and half in another. Where that other place is is a mystery, but they suspect that some part of Kylie's friend Argent may be there. This one too will be difficult to explore, and the queen states that it will need to wait until other more pressing matters are dealt with.

As they return to the pillar artifact that brought them to this cave, Talen and Quirin both note the presence of an Elder artifact that seems to come from the ground.

“It's asking me questions! It told me that is was 'scanning',” Talen will slowly answer. “Than it said 'identity confirmed. How can I assist you?' What the heck does that mean?”

This is certainly out of Onas' area of expertise. "Perhaps it has determined that you meet the qualifications as an Elder? It seems to want to know what you wish it to do. Does it have any information that it can share, maybe regarding its function or purpose?"

The aftermath of the battle against the HIVE continues in the ruins of the Elder City of Shelvestra...

Laucian reaches Gweyr and asks if she needs some help. Casting Flameblade in his off hand, Laucian begins moving through the eggs helping what has not been shattered already.

“Always happy to have help,” Gweyr responds with a smile.

Her fire elemental continues to move ahead at a safe distance causing eggs to explode from its heat. Laucian helps by casting a Flame Blade spell.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you what we found in Pinit,” Gweyr adds after time referring to her Clan Hold. “We found a treant in the center of town! More cooshee's and some elfin cats too! It was an incredible experience.”

When Talen arrives and the others begin looking into the ruins. Laucian will attend and observe. Curious of the Dragon’s nest’s Laucian will ask the dwarves if there were any swords or other weapons within their nests.

The dwarves will offer several bags of gold as part of the elves 'cut'.

“Nay,” Lieutenant Stonebeard will respond. “All that they had were these coins. No gems or jewels or anything else.”


Elsewhere, Talen is making an inspection of the Pillar Artifacts that remain in this ruined city. First up is the City to City teleporter.

“Perhaps one day, this larger artifact will see use again,” Lilia wonders. “It does connect this place to the Elder Ruins to the north of the Sylvan Realm. But the arrival point is buried beneath the earth once more. It would take much work to uncover it but ultimately would connect the two.”

“I'm not sure if it would really be worth it,” Talen counters. “I mean this one is hard to get to as is the other up north. The connection under Karn's Keep seems like the best one to use.”

“I doubt Cynalon will be setting up an outpost here in these ruins,” Lord Sharadin adds. “Perhaps to study what is here, but not for moving goods up to the Sylvan Realm. The Pillar Artifact underneath Gateway seems the most practical choice for that.”

“Assuming that they mean life support in the same manner as Spell Engines, the device is telling you that the arrival point is inhospitable,” Lilia adds in regards to other Elder City Talen called Shullindra. “Being underwater could explain that.”

“I guess that makes sense,” Talen slowly agrees. “Perhaps the Elders had their own version of Spell Engines?”

“Or devices that perform a similar function,” Lord Sharadin suggests. “The Elders constructed some very powerful devices in their time. Who can say what their limits were?”

Kylie pauses to consider the information. "Do you think the life support would allow you -- us -- to explore that city safely, Talen? Also, can you get any sense of where Shullindra is relative to the rest of the world?"

“Possibly?” is all that Talen can say. “I can always try it and find out. As for where Shullindra is at, its far to the south and east. There are other Pillar Artifacts in the area, but they are all underwater. I think its in the middle of the ocean!”

“A reasonable assumption,” Lord Sharadin says. “Talen can look at the world map back at Karn's Keep to get better idea just where in the world Shullindra is at.”

“I would advise against activating this 'life support' right now,” Silvarn speaks up. “If that city is underwater than it is also possible that water breathing beings could call it home. Make the city hospitable for you might inadvertently harm others.”


The second of the two small Pillar Artifacts lies on the opposite side of the ruins, about four miles away from one used as the arrival point. However, its not truly all here! It stuck half here and half somewhere else. The Argent copy that arrived at this location was passed on to where ever else this devices is connected to. However, there seems to be no way to determine that lies on the other side.

"Talen, can you tell where the other end of it is, geographically? That might help us plan our later exploration."

“No, not at all,” Talen tells Kylie. “The connection to the web of pillars on Arret ends here. It does not go through this portal. “Argent was doing research on the Pillar Artifacts at my request,” Lord Sharadin announces. “We did not realize what had happened to her. We thought that there were only two of her now, not six. If another one of her passed through this portal, than I will deal with her recovery. Don't worry, Kylie, I will make this right.”

“I could pass through it,” Silvarn offers. “I have to visit Hyperion anyway, so however distant it maybe it is not a hindrance to me.”

“Let's hold off on that for now,” Lord Sharadin suggests. “But I will keep that in mind.”


While walking back to the arrival point, Talen senses another Elder Device. This one seems to be in a building that had collapsed. This one is asking him questions!

“It's asking me questions! It told me that is was 'scanning',” Talen will slowly answer. “Than it said 'identity confirmed. How can I assist you?' What the heck does that mean?”

This is certainly out of Onas' area of expertise. "Perhaps it has determined that you meet the qualifications as an Elder? It seems to want to know what you wish it to do. Does it have any information that it can share, maybe regarding its function or purpose?"

Talen communicates with this unseen Elder Device while the others look to uncover it. The Elder Device tells Talen that its designation is 'Ironaya'. Part way through the conversation, Ironaya rises up from the rubble on its own! Its appearance is quite shocking!

Ironaya is very big, some ten feet tall. It has reptilian features and seems like a relative to lizard men so common in this swamp. On its head are several horns and there is a great bony crest emerging from the back of its neck. The body was green in color with yellow highlights. The creature had a long tail, longer than its body. The sight of it makes the nickname 'horn head' that you heard in the Shelvestra make sense.

GM Notes:

The HIVE Queen just buried Ironaya but did not destroy the Lore Keeper during her tantrum. Ironaya is basically a walking Elder library. Talen can ask it questions which it will answer if it has the information. This is done telepathically and only Talen can receive the answers. The HIVE Queen went through this before in her interludes. Here are the relevant details from those things I already revealed in the earlier posts.

The six Elder Cities were constructed 197 million years ago. The Elders were not from Arret, but came from another world. Each of the six Elder Cities were dedicated to one specific scientific endeavor. Shillesta was built for weapons research and development. The native population died out 65 million years ago.

The Elders were locked in a battle with the Darkness that came from a place they called 'The Great Wound'. This darkness was taking over many of their kind and using them as soldiers. Weapons to fight them were developed here in Shillesta. The HIVE was one such weapon, but they provide to be uncontrollable and that line of research was abandoned. That had been called Project: Infection.

As the war against the Darkness raged on, other projects came into being. One was Project: Exodus. This one would rapidly move the population of one world to another if it was attacked by the Darkness. Another was Project: Resonance that would use the Pillar Artifacts themselves destroy those infected by the Darkness. The world to world pillars sent the attack to all Elder Worlds and from there is spread out among the smaller Pillar Artifacts. This was how the Elders died out 65 million years ago when their own attack was used against them. Many of the Pillar Artifacts were damaged from this attack and became unusable. Any data from before the attack was lost as well.

Twenty thousand years ago an unknown surge of energy triggered Project: Exodus, the mass relocation of individuals to another planet. With the Pillar Network damaged, the results were not as planned. Only about half the living things on Arret along with roughly half of the Elder Cities and Pillar Artifacts were moved. All those beings though to be lost all those years ago were actually moved to a different world! That is where the other three Elder Cities are now along with the missing Pillar Artifacts. The 'phasing' Pillar Artifact sends those going through it to this other world. Ironaya calls this place Lamina.

That should give you a few things to talk about. Any other questions for Ironaya?

Treat Ironaya as essentially a golem, just one that can be communicated with. It's not a living creature.

Now what?

[Kylie]

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:

At the larger pillar formation, they learn that it connects to a third Elder city called Shullindra. However, it is located underwater. When Kylie asks about it's location, Talen suggests that it lies at the bottom of the ocean. Sharadin confirms that this is likely. "Oh," Kylie replies, having already suspected that might be the case, though she had hoped more for a lake or large river. "Still, if the life support works, it would be interesting to investigate someday. Of course, thorough preparations would be needed.

“I would advise against activating this 'life support' right now,” Silvarn speaks up. “If that city is underwater than it is also possible that water breathing beings could call it home. Make the city hospitable for you might inadvertently harm others.”

Kylie turns to the silver dragon. "That is a good point that I had not considered, Silvarn. We may need to find a different way to approach the location - if we decide to explore it further at some point."


Some time later, they reach the third pillar artifact located at the far end of the cavern. It appears translucent and Talen notes that it is stuck between two different worlds. This also happened twenty thousand years ago, like so many other things related to the Elders. Like the other, this too seems an incredible opportunity to explore and learn, once they have time to plan and prepare.

“No, not at all,” Talen tells Kylie. “The connection to the web of pillars on Arret ends here. It does not go through this portal. What lies beyond, even what conditions are over there, where ever that is, are completely unknown. I know you want your friend to be safe, but I can't give you any answers.”

Kylie sighs. "You're right, Talen, I am concerned for this Argent, and I pray that she is okay. It is strange that there are so many... 'versions'... of my friend, but I care about all of them. It was tragic what happened to the one infested by the Hive, and I hated having to kill her." There is an unpleasant weight of grief lingering in Kylie's chest, and she cannot help wondering if it will ever ease.

“Argent was doing research on the Pillar Artifacts at my request,” Lord Sharadin announces. “We did not realize what had happened to her. We thought that there were only two of her now, not six. If another one of her passed through this portal, than I will deal with her recovery. Don't worry, Kylie, I will make this right.”

“I could pass through it,” Silvarn offers. “I have to visit Hyperion anyway, so however distant it maybe it is not a hindrance to me.”

“Let's hold off on that for now,” Lord Sharadin suggests. “But I will keep that in mind.”

"Thank you both," Kylie says softly to Lord Sharadin and Silvarn. "I greatly appreciate whatever you are able to do to learn more of this Argent's fate."


Returning in the direction of their exit, Talen and Quirin sense another Elder artifact - this one apparently buried in the ground. Onas' response to Talen's frustrated questions make sense, so Kylie waits for more information to become known.

As Talen communicates mentally with the Elder device, the ground shakes and it starts to rise from the its' shallow grave. It is huge, standing nearly twice Kylie's height! It appears to be similar to a golem, though in a shape that roughly resembles a lizard man. The spikes on its head and neck bring to mind the reference to a 'horn head' that they encountered in Shelvestra. Perhaps this is what that species of Elder looked like, though Kylie is unsure if they were this big.

Kylie listens as Talen relates the information that has been shared with him. "Talen, can Ironaya tell you about any other Elder artifacts or pillar travel destinations that we haven't found yet? What endeavors were the other Elder cities dedicated to? And what does it know about Lamina? Also, does it know anything about the giant pillar we found in the harbor up near Shillesta?" Kylie pauses, realizing that she's let her curiosity get the better of her. "Uh... sorry for asking so many questions, Talen."

[Onas]

Onas Brightsword:

“Or devices that perform a similar function,” Lord Sharadin suggests. “The Elders constructed some very powerful devices in their time. Who can say what their limits were?”

Discussion of the main pillar artifact leads to mention of other Elder devices. Lord Sharadin's comment brings a thought to Onas' mind. "We've seen a number of Elder devices so far, but nothing that was obviously a weapon. If they had enemies, it seems like they would have created weapons to fight with. Is it possible they took all of them with them, or we simply don't recognize them as weapons? I got the impression from what was mentioned earlier that they left in something of a hurry. People in a hurry tend to forget or leave behind things; at least, that's been my experience."

Kylie seems heart-broken over the loss of another duplicate of her friend. Lord Sharadin and the dragon Silvarn promise to help resolve the situation. Onas is impressed by their kindness and thoughtfulness, and whispers a brief prayer to Angharradh for their well-being.

Another Elder artifact is located as they make their way toward the extraction point. This one is quite large and roughly humanoid in shape, though with reptilian features. For a moment, Onas wonders if this is yet another opponent they will have to battle. However, it soon becomes apparent that it is not immediately hostile, so he relaxes and sheathes Frostfang.

Listening to Kylie run off at the mouth, Onas considers what he has heard. Apparently the Elders were at war with a foe from across the galaxy. It is hard to even think about war on so vast a scale. "Not to intrude, but I would really like to learn more about this 'Darkness' you mentioned, Talen. They must be a powerful foe indeed."

[Lilia]

Lilia:

Much new information is learned as we explore the Elder City.

“I'm not sure if it would really be worth it,” Talen counters. “I mean this one is hard to get to as is the other up north. The connection under Karn's Keep seems like the best one to use.”

“I doubt Cynalon will be setting up an outpost here in these ruins,” Lord Sharadin adds. “Perhaps to study what is here, but not for moving goods up to the Sylvan Realm. The Pillar Artifact underneath Gateway seems the most practical choice for that.”

“Not anytime soon,” Lilia will agree. “But perhaps someday. We elves tend to take a long term view of things. Just because what is here now cannot serve a useful purpose does not mean that one day it can. If these three Elder Cities are viable, than rapid transportation between them would be a boon.”

“I guess that makes sense,” Talen slowly agrees. “Perhaps the Elders had their own version of Spell Engines?”

“Or devices that perform a similar function,” Lord Sharadin suggests. “The Elders constructed some very powerful devices in their time. Who can say what their limits were?”

“I wouldn't put it past them to have devices such as Lord Sharadin theorizes,” Lilia agrees. “Given just how their creations seem to withstand the ravages of time and are millions of years old, their works seem to be even more advanced that those of Alphatia.”

“Possibly?” is all that Talen can say. “I can always try it and find out. As for where Shullindra is at, its far to the south and east. There are other Pillar Artifacts in the area, but they are all underwater. I think its in the middle of the ocean!”

“A reasonable assumption,” Lord Sharadin says. “Talen can look at the world map back at Karn's Keep to get better idea just where in the world Shullindra is at.”

“I would advise against activating this 'life support' right now,” Silvarn speaks up. “If that city is underwater than it is also possible that water breathing beings could call it home. Make the city hospitable for you might inadvertently harm others.”

Kylie turns to the silver dragon. "That is a good point that I had not considered, Silvarn. We may need to find a different way to approach the location -if we decide to explore it further at some point."

“We'll investigate this third city when we are able,” Lilia suggests. “There is no compelling reason to go there right now, but perhaps one day we will have the time. Logically, finding it and traveling to it seems the best way to proceed. As Lady Silvarn suggested, we may inadvertently cause harm to those who already dwell there.”

“Whatever caused this to happened, also happened twenty thousand years ago,” Talen states. “Yet another piece in the weird puzzle. Twenty thousand years ago half the Elder Cities and the Pillar Artifact vanished. This one here seems to be the sole connection between the artifacts that remain and the ones that vanished. Seems to me that where ever this goes, the rest of the stuff that vanished is there as well.”

“So many things happened twenty thousand years ago,” Lilia wonders aloud. “I'm beginning to think that all these seemingly separate events from that era all part of the same larger event. We elves were forced to abandon Evergreen during that time. Many elf clans were lost by the time they reached the Sylvan Realm.”


On the trip back to the arrival point, another Elder device is encountered. Its talking to Talen, but no one else can hear the conversation. Finally, whatever it is digs itself out and stands before us. It's a huge reptilian creature, nearly twice as tall as Lilia! Its scaly and has horns. It calls itself Ironaya, but it does not seem to be a living creature. It identifies itself as a Lore Keeper, one who stores the knowledge of the past.

Talen asks many questions and Ironaya seems to have many answers. The construct fills in details about the Elders, this city, and what happened to them. It seems that the Elders were responsible for the HIVE! Kylie asks follow up questions.

Kylie listens as Talen relates the information that has been shared with him. "Talen, can Ironaya tell you about any other Elder artifacts or pillar travel destinations that we haven't found yet? “Based on what we are being told, assuming that it is true, then all those who were lost twenty thousand years ago where actually sent to the World of Lamina,” Lilia hypothesizes. “There could be descendants of all those lost elfin clans on that world today. I wish to go there and see if they did survive to reunite with our lost kin.”

Listening to Kylie run off at the mouth, Onas considers what he has heard. Apparently the Elders were at war with a foe from across the galaxy. It is hard to even think about war on so vast a scale. "Not to intrude, but I would really like to learn more about this 'Darkness' you mentioned, Talen. They must be a powerful foe indeed."

“The story about this darkness does have a few similarities to what we encountered in the Belme Swamp,” Lilia notes. “Beings controlled by a black water. Those of us who joined with Elspeth in conflict with darkness itself. It was said to be a godlike power. Perhaps it is the same being in both conflicts? This forgotten god who wishes the destruction of all who live?”

Lilia will ask a question for Talen to relate when the time comes. “If the Elders created the HIVE millions of years ago, then how did they survive for so long to become a threat to us today?”

[Talen]

Talen:

Talen is excited as he uncovers many new pieces of information.

“It's okay,” Talen says, giving Kylie a gentle hug. “I know you do, but what was done was needed to be done.”

This is certainly out of Onas' area of expertise. "Perhaps it has determined that you meet the qualifications as an Elder? It seems to want to know what you wish it to do. Does it have any information that it can share, maybe regarding its function or purpose?"

“That seems to be the case, Onas,” Talen answers. “Yes, it says that it is a Lore Keeper. I guess it has knowledge but we need to ask it questions to get answers.

A series of obvious questions follows with some astounding answers being provide. Talen feels overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information! Not to mention just what this Lore Keeper looks like!

“She says that she knows of the Pillar Artifacts on this world, but not on other worlds. Other Elder Artifacts may still survive, but she does not have any direct contact with them. Her knowledge is also 65 million years out of date. Current circumstances are beyond her knowledge.”

“Shelvestra was dedicated to weapons research and development. Shillesta was using an experimental substance to provide city-wide warmth for its inhabitants. The Elders were warm blooded creatures and needed heat to survive in cold climates. Shillesta was a test for future cities and outposts in wintry conditions. Shullindra was testing the possibility for underwater cities and outposts. Shalcantra was testing the viability of cities and outposts on the surface of oceans. Sholvinar was a manufacturing center where all the Pillar Artifacts for this world were built. Lastly, Shalranta was deep underground testing the viability of outposts and cities in extremely hot areas. It was also studying the core of Arret.”

“Lamina is a distant planet in a different solar system that was originally scouted by the Pathfinder. A world-to-world teleporter was placed on that planet, but otherwise there were no other Elder artifacts on there. Later, it was to be used as a safe destination for Project: Exodus for those living on Arret.”

“The large pillar at the Port of Shillesta is a world-to-world teleporter. It was placed here by Pathfinder 238 million years ago.

Project: Resonance was a plan to directly attack those who were infected and kill them. Instead it was used to wipe out both the Elders and the infected. The Darkness acted intelligently, but never communicated what it wanted from the Elders. It seemed to want them gone, for whatever reason.”

“When Project: Infection was abandoned the samples were sealed away in stasis for safe keeping, in case they ever wanted to conduct future research in this project.”

“What does stasis mean?” Talen asks.

Elder Lore Keeper Ironaya has been discovered and a wealth of information has been learned about a great many things.

The Fate of Shelvestra:

“Not anytime soon,” Lilia will agree. “But perhaps someday. We elves tend to take a long term view of things. Just because what is here now cannot serve a useful purpose does not mean that one day it can. If these three Elder Cities are viable, than rapid transportation between them would be a boon.”

“That would be exciting to see,” Talen is agrees. “Seeing these ruins come back to life.”

“Not something that I would have considered, at least not in my life time,” Lord Sharadin admits. “It could take decades or longer.”

“But to some whose lifespans are measured in hundreds of years, its not very long at all,” Silvarn adds. “Much work would need to be done, but it could eventually happen. It just becomes a question if that much work is worth the results.”

“It's something to look for,” Lord Sharadin adds.

“It's also possible what the Elders considered to be a weapon may look nothing like what we think a weapon should be,” Silvarn states. “They may not be recognizable as such, assuming that it even survived this long. Sixty five million years is a long time, even for a dragon. Give on little actually remains here, they could have rotted away millions of years ago.”


Shullindra:

The name of the third Elder City on Arret has been revealed. It is Shullindra and it is believed to be on the bottom of the ocean to the south and west. Talen is given the option to activate life support at Shullindra, suggesting that it is currently inhospitable to air breathers right now. While pondering if to activate it or not, Silvarn suggests not activating it.

Kylie turns to the silver dragon. "That is a good point that I had not considered, Silvarn. We may need to find a different way to approach the location -if we decide to explore it further at some point."

“There are many creatures who call the beneath the water home,” Silvarn adds. “Not all are enemies, nor are all friends either. Caution is always warranted. No reason to cause accidental harm.”


Pillar Artifact of Two Worlds:

The second Pillar Artifact in Shelvestra is most unusual. Its partly on Arret and partly on Lamina, a whole different world! It seems that one of the Argent copies passed through this portal and was sent to that other world.

Kylie sighs. "You're right, Talen, I am concerned for this Argent, and I pray that she is okay. It is strange that there are so many...'versions'... of my friend, but I care about all of them. It was tragic what happened to the one infested by the Hive, and I hated having to kill her." There is an unpleasant weight of grief lingering in Kylie's chest, and she cannot help wondering if it will ever ease.

“Oh, that reminds me, I have news for you, Kylie,” Lord Sharadin will speak up. “The Argent that you returned a few days ago is doing much better now. Elspeth helped her over come the trauma of what she went through. Jallarzi and the other Argents took her home to Crossroads. She's still there, as far as I know.”

“However, after we learned about the Argent that had been infected by the HIVE that you were forced to kill, a plan did come to mind,” Lord Sharadin continues. “We believe that she can be recovered and restored to normal. We need to recover the body, of course. The plan is simple. Remove the HIVE infecting her, have a priest cast Raise Dead on her. There is a limit to how many days a dead body can be raised once more, but we have some time, but not a lot. Once raised, a priest would than have to cast a Heal spell on her to repair the damage done. Afterwards, we hope that Elspeth can help that Argent out as she did the one you found.”

“She says that she knows of the Pillar Artifacts on this world, but not on other worlds. Other Elder Artifacts may still survive, but she does not have any direct contact with them. Her knowledge is also 65 million years out of date. Current circumstances are beyond her knowledge.”

“That makes sense,” Lord Sharadin agrees. “Ironaya knows what was, not what is right now. But still, old information can be useful.”

“The large pillar at the Port of Shillesta is a world-to-world teleporter. It was placed here by Pathfinder 238 million years ago.”

“Ask it what Pathfinder is,” Lord Sharadin tells Talen.

Darkness:

The subject of the enemies of the Elders comes to light. They called the Darkness and it seems familiar.

"Not to intrude, but I would really like to learn more about this 'Darkness' you mentioned, Talen. They must be a powerful foe indeed."

Through Talen, Ironaya explains just what the Elders knew of this Darkness.

Seeming a great hole in space where anything that passes through it is gone forever. The Pit of Despair is at the heart of our galaxy. All that various stars and worlds circle around it.”


HIVE:

Lilia will ask a question for Talen to relate when the time comes. “If the Elders created the HIVE millions of years ago, then how did they survive for so long to become a threat to us today?”

“When Project: Infection was abandoned the samples were sealed away in stasis for safe keeping, in case they ever wanted to conduct future research in this project.”

“What does stasis mean?” Talen asks.

“They were essentially frozen,” Lord Sharadin explains. “Preserved in some fashion and somehow one woke recently.”


Lamina:

“So many things happened twenty thousand years ago,” Lilia wonders aloud. “I'm beginning to think that all these seemingly separate events from that era all part of the same larger event. “It is a common theme in the history of many cultures,” Lord Sharadin adds. “It's hard to believe that lost civilizations may still exist on that different world.”

“Based on what we are being told, assuming that it is true, then all those who were lost twenty thousand years ago where actually sent to the World of Lamina,” Lilia hypothesizes. “There could be descendants of all those lost elfin clans on that world today. I wish to go there and see if they did survive to reunite with our lost kin.”

“That would be a trip to make,” Lord Sharadin agrees. “Someday when things are less hectic and the war is over.”

“Lamina is a distant planet in a different solar system that was originally scouted by the Pathfinder. A world-to-world teleporter was placed on that planet, but otherwise there were no other Elder artifacts on there. Later, it was to be used as a safe destination for Project: Exodus for those living on Arret.”

“That settles it,” Silvarn states. “I'll pass through the portal and do a quick scout before I return to Hyperion. At least get a feel for what is going on there before any trips are made. Maybe I'll be able to find Argent while I am there.”

"Talen," Lord Sharadin asks of his nephew. "We could spend days asking Ironaya questions. Days I don't have to spare right now. Can she be moved? Say through the Portal Artifact to the basement of Karn's Keep? Can she leave this city?"

Lilia's and Talen's comments trigger a thought in Kylie's mind. 'Perhaps one of these cities would be a good option for a half-elven clan home. It could serve at least two purposes: research and giving the half-elves a place of their own that isn't dependent on the elves.'

“We'll investigate this third city when we are able,” Lilia suggests. “There is no compelling reason to go there right now, but perhaps one day we will have the time. Logically, finding it and traveling to it seems the best way to proceed. As Lady Silvarn suggested, we may inadvertently cause harm to those who already dwell there.”

Again, Talen finds himself in agreement. “There's more than enough things to sort through before even worrying about this underwater city.”

"Don't worry, Lilia," Kylie says with a smile, "I wasn't suggesting that we should go there right away. Just one of may possible opportunities for a later time."

“There are many creatures who call the beneath the water home,” Silvarn adds. “Not all are enemies, nor are all friends either. Caution is always warranted. No reason to cause accidental harm.”

Silvarn vocalizes what Kyle was already thinking, so she doesn't bother to comment further.

“Based on what we are being told, assuming that it is true, then all those who were lost twenty thousand years ago where actually sent to the World of Lamina,” Lilia hypothesizes. “There could be descendants of all those lost elfin clans on that world today. I wish to go there and see if they did survive to reunite with our lost kin.”

“That would be a trip to make,” Lord Sharadin agrees. “Someday when things are less hectic and the war is over.”

Kylie turns to the queen. "I would like to accompany you on that trip, Lilia, whenever you choose to go."

“It's okay,” Talen says, giving Kylie a gentle hug. “I know you do, but what was done was needed to be done.”

Kylie accepts the hug from Talen, a moistness evident in her eye. "Thank you, Talen. I know, and yet I hate that it was necessary."

“That settles it,” Silvarn states. “I'll pass through the portal and do a quick scout before I return to Hyperion. At least get a feel for what is going on there before any trips are made. Maybe I'll be able to find Argent while I am there.”

"Thank you, Silvarn. I hope your trip goes well and bears fruit," Kylie says softly.

“Oh, that reminds me, I have news for you, Kylie,” Lord Sharadin will speak up. “The Argent that you returned a few days ago is doing much better now. Elspeth helped her over come the trauma of what she went through. Jallarzi and the other Argents took her home to Crossroads. She's still there, as far as I know.”

“However, after we learned about the Argent that had been infected by the HIVE that you were forced to kill, a plan did come to mind,” Lord Sharadin continues. “We believe that she can be recovered and restored to normal. We need to recover the body, of course. The plan is simple. Remove the HIVE infecting her, have a priest cast Raise Dead on her. There is a limit to how many days a dead body can be raised once more, but we have some time, but not a lot. Once raised, a priest would than have to cast a Heal spell on her to repair the damage done. Afterwards, we hope that Elspeth can help that Argent out as she did the one you found.”

"Thank you for telling me, Lord Sharadin," Kylie says. "I'm glad to hear that she is recovering and is at home with her family."

The idea espoused by Lord Sharadin heartens Kylie a bit. "I pray that you are right and we are able to make it happen before time runs out." As she thinks about it, another idea pops into her head. "If we do succeed in bring all of the Argents back, I wonder if it would be possible to return them to being one person. Then again, I don't know if they would want that."

“The story about this darkness does have a few similarities to what we encountered in the Beleme Swamp,” Lilia notes. “Beings controlled by a black water. Those of us who joined with Elspeth in conflict with darkness itself. It was said to be a godlike power. Perhaps it is the same being in both conflicts? This forgotten god who wishes the destruction of all who live?”

“That was my thought as well,” Lord Sharadin says. “So similar that it cannot be a coincidence.”

Kylie's mind floats back to the day when they confronted that dark power. It was formidable, even as it slumbered. "So this god, buried under the Beleme Swamp, is linked to this hole in the center of our universe? If so, we may need to understand the connection better if we are to have any hope of removing the threat."

“She says that she knows of the Pillar Artifacts on this world, but not on other worlds. Other Elder Artifacts may still survive, but she does not have any direct contact with them. Her knowledge is also 65 million years out of date. Current circumstances are beyond her knowledge.”

“Shelvestra was dedicated to weapons research and development. Shillesta was using an experimental substance to provide city-wide warmth for its inhabitants. The Elders were warm blooded creatures and needed heat to survive in cold climates. Shillesta was a test for future cities and outposts in wintry conditions. Shullindra was testing the possibility for underwater cities and outposts. Shalcantra was testing the viability of cities and outposts on the surface of oceans. Sholvinar was a manufacturing center where all the Pillar Artifacts for this world were built. Lastly, Shalranta was deep underground testing the viability of outposts and cities in extremely hot areas. It was also studying the core of Arret.”

“Lamina is a distant planet in a different solar system that was originally scouted by the Pathfinder. A world-to-world teleporter was placed on that planet, but otherwise there were no other Elder artifacts on there. Later, it was to be used as a safe destination for Project: Exodus for those living on Arret.”

“The large pillar at the Port of Shillesta is a world-to-world teleporter. It was placed here by Pathfinder 238 million years ago.

Her questions result in a deluge of information that Kylie does her best to absorb quickly. The divergent paths of research for the various cities proves quite interesting. Then her thoughts turn to the world transporter. "We only saw one in Shillesta, though all others have been in sets of six; is it likely that the other five are in the bay up there? Would it function as just one pillar without the other five? It may be worth trying to determine if that pillar links to this other world, Lamina."

“The entity known as the darkness came from what the Elder's call 'The Great Wound'. They describe it as living darkness that would coat other Elders and force them to do their bidding. The Elders were forced to kill those infected before they could infect others. The HIVE was an attempt to infect those infected and change them back, but it went horribly wrong. Project: Exodus was a method to safely the populations of Elder worlds who were being attacked by those infected. Project: Resonance was a plan to directly attack those who were infected and kill them. Instead it was used to wipe out both the Elders and the infected. The Darkness acted intelligently, but never communicated what it wanted from the Elders. It seemed to want them gone, for whatever reason.”

"It seems that Project: Resonance is the answer to what happened 65 million years ago. Talen, does Ironaya have any knowledge of how it was turned against the Elders or what precipitated it being done at that particular time?"

“I wouldn't put it past them to have devices such as Lord Sharadin theorizes,” Lilia agrees. “Given just how their creations seem to withstand the ravages of time and are millions of years old, their works seem to be even more advanced that those of Alphatia.”

“It's also possible what the Elders considered to be a weapon may look nothing like what we think a weapon should be,” Silvarn states. “They may not be recognizable as such, assuming that it even survived this long. Sixty five million years is a long time, even for a dragon. Give on little actually remains here, they could have rotted away millions of years ago.”

Onas shrugs. "Lilia was just commenting on how Elder creations seem to have weathered the passage to time, so it seems possible. I suppose it depends on what they were made of and whether we're capable of recognizing them."

Onas turns to Talen. "Can you ask the Lore Keeper about what the Elders used as personal weapons and whether any might have survived to this time?"

“So many things happened twenty thousand years ago,” Lilia wonders aloud. “I'm beginning to think that all these seemingly separate events from that era all part of the same larger event. We elves were forced to abandon Evergreen during that time. Many elf clans were lost by the time they reached the Sylvan Realm.”

"That seems likely, my queen," Onas says deferentially, nodding in agreement. "I guess the real question is: what precipitated these related events and how might one prevent something similar from happening again?"

Queen Lilia, Lord Sharadin, and the dragon Silvarn provide more information and speculation about this 'Great Darkness'. The Lore Keeper artifact named Ironaya adds considerably to that through the Chosen, Talen. Considering what has been learned, Onas decides that he should try to research this dark god as soon as he has a bit more time. There is mention of a Pathfinder entity, and Lord Sharadin asks the question that was just forming in his own mind.

Lord Sharadin provides Kylie with some news regarding her friend, Argent. It seems hopeful and she appears somewhat relieved by the news.

“Not something that I would have considered, at least not in my life time,” Lord Sharadin admits. “It could take decades or longer.”

“But to some whose lifespans are measured in hundreds of years, its not very long at all,” Silvarn adds. “Much work would need to be done, but it could eventually happen. It just becomes a question if that much work is worth the results.”

Laucian listens to the others talk about long passed civilizations and the knowledge that they bring comes to light. “Pardon my skepticism but perhaps if these ruins were lost. Perhaps they were lost for a good reason. Why bring the past to our time when we do not know what troubles come with these boons that you speak of.” The Ehlonna follower states.

“Our trials for the tokens would be a good example of this. The Narwhale in particular. Not to mention our weapons may not work as well as we hope nor our spells whether divine or arcane may not function well either. “They were essentially frozen,” Lord Sharadin explains. “Preserved in some fashion and somehow one woke recently.”

“That troubles me,” Lilia will admit. “If I am understanding this correctly, than there are other HIVE Queens asleep here in the ruins. We must make sure that they never wake up. Can Ironaya show us where they were kept?

“Are there any other projects such as this? Is there anything in stasis now that we should know of?”

Lilia nods in agreement. That is a very good question.

“From my observations,” Lilia will state, “all that seems to have survived from the Elders was these Pillar Artifacts of various sizes, some of their cities and creations. But no personal items, no furniture or things one would make use of everyday. The things that considered to be important were built to last.”

“Before our mission here,” Lilia speaks up, “I too had considered such a thing but lacked the divine magic to pull it off. That Argent could have had insights into the HIVE to no other could. The intelligence learned may have been vital against the HIVE. Now that information is no longer necessary, other than her recovery of course.”

“I have heard tales of what they called the Great Wound,” Silvarn says. “Its known as the Pit of Despair to most now. Seeming a great hole in space where anything that passes through it is gone forever. The Pit of Despair is at the heart of our galaxy. All that various stars and worlds circle around it.”

“No, the imprisoned darkness was far away from the Beleme Swamp,” Lilia adds. “Those of us joined with Elspeth traveled back across the dark water from the swamp through the earth to far distant location. That's where the sliver of darkness was at. The chamber imprisoning it was damaged. Water seeping in touched the darkness and was transformed by it. This dark water than flowed through the earth before coming up in the swamp. We repaired the damage and purified the dark water so it could harm no other.”

“Sherwood Elf-Friend did tell us the tale of how this Dark God did come to this world long before any of our races did exist,” Lilia continues. “The gods to rally against him and eventually imprisoned him. He's still here and still imprisoned after all this time. Perhaps he even came from the darkness in the center of all things.”

“That settles it,” Silvarn states. “I'll pass through the portal and do a quick scout before I return to Hyperion. At least get a feel for what is going on there before any trips are made. Maybe I'll be able to find Argent while I am there.”

“Good hunting, Lady Silvarn,” Lilia tells the silver dragon.

"Talen," Lord Sharadin asks of his nephew. "We could spend days asking Ironaya questions. Days I don't have to spare right now. Can she be moved? Say through the Portal Artifact to the basement of Karn's Keep? Can she leave this city?"

“If that is indeed possible,” Lilia wonders, “than perhaps Ironaya should stay close to Talen. After all, he is the only one who can communicate with it.”

Many other questions are asked for Talen to communicate to Ironaya. Lilia is curious for the answers.

“She says that their minds were their weapons,” Talen relates not completely understanding what that means.

“Ask it what Pathfinder is,” Lord Sharadin tells Talen.

“Pathfinder was an Elder ship that flew through space,” Talen explains. “It looked for habitable worlds and upon finding one placed a world-to-world pillar on it. That way the Elders could just use it to go to any newly seeded world.”

“They were essentially frozen,” Lord Sharadin explains. “Preserved in some fashion and somehow one woke recently.”

“Oh, I see,” Talen says grasping the concept. “A form of sleep then?”

“That troubles me,” Lilia will admit. “If I am understanding this correctly, than there are other HIVE Queens asleep here in the ruins. We must make sure that they never wake up. Can Ironaya show us where they were kept?”

“Yes,” Talen answers. “Ironaya will led us to the location.”

“Are there any other projects such as this? Is there anything in stasis now that we should know of?”

“No,” Talen relates in relief. “No other such projects.”

"Talen," Lord Sharadin asks of his nephew. "We could spend days asking Ironaya questions. Days I don't have to spare right now. Can she be moved? Say through the Portal Artifact to the basement of Karn's Keep? Can she leave this city?"

“If that is indeed possible,” Lilia wonders, “than perhaps Ironaya should stay close to Talen. After all, he is the only one who can communicate with it.”

“She can leave the city if someone directs her to,” Talen confirms. “She could come back with us to the Sylvan Realm!”

Talen has nothing else to add, but will hold on for as long as she wishes.

“One of their own used the attack on their own kind,” Talen reports. “Sounds like he went nuts to me.”

Lia listens to the others speak of other civilizations living under water and far off places. For a time Lia remains quiet trying to fathom the magnitude of the situation.

"Talen," Lord Sharadin asks of his nephew. "We could spend days asking Ironaya questions. Days I don't have to spare right now. Can she be moved? Say through the Portal Artifact to the basement of Karn's Keep? Can she leave this city?"

You are not worried about having a Sentient creature program with the walls of Karn’s Keep? Though it would be better inorder to access it more freely. I guess it would be worth the risk.”

“She can leave the city if someone directs her to,” Talen confirms. “She could come back with us to the Sylvan Realm!”

“Ask her about the Artifact in the Slyvan Realm. Why would the elves of old make it difficult to get to, is it in working order? Or is it dormant for a reason.”

“She says that their minds were their weapons,” Talen relates not completely understanding what that means.

“Minds? How do you attack with your mind?” she asks curiously. Not like you can out think someone. She thinks to herself.

“Pathfinder was an Elder ship that flew through space,” Talen explains. “It looked for habitable worlds and upon finding one placed a world-to-world pillar on it. That way the Elders could just use it to go to any newly seeded world.”

“ Is Pathfinder still active? Where was it last?” she asks curiously.

“Yes,” Talen answers. “Ironaya will led us to the location.”

“Can the dormant beings be terminated from here?” she asks curiously seeing how he has all this information at his fingertips or mind prints.

“One of their own used the attack on their own kind,” Talen reports. “Sounds like he went nuts to me.”

“ Genocide.” she says simply. “ What would drive one to do such a thing.

The coalition is wrapping up their mission in the Elder Ruins. Lord Sharadin shares news about the Argent that was returned from the Sylvan Realm several days ago and about the other Argent who was taken over by the HIVE.

"Thank you for telling me, Lord Sharadin," Kylie says. "I'm glad to hear that she is recovering and is at home with her family."

“Jallarzi would know more details about that,” Lord Sharadin states. “She traveled with the Argent's to Crossroads. I do not know the future plans of that Argent. Hard to say, given what she went through.”

“I do not know if that is even possible,” Lord Sharadin will say in regards to rejoining all the Argents. “Or even, as you say, would they want such a thing.”

“But she was entombed in the earth. It would take some time to get to her even with magic. There is a chance that we remove the earth and it caves in once again. Do you think that worth the risk for one person’s life, even a half life?”

“I have other methods at my disposal that would, providing they work as I believe they should, allow us to recover her body without much effort,” Lord Sharadin tells Laucian. “Argent was working on the Pillar Artifacts on my behalf and so I bear a measure of responsibility for what happened to her. I wish to make things right. Would you do any less for those under your command?”


More questions are asked of Ironaya and more information revealed. The Pathfinder was an Elder ship that searched for worlds to colonize. Upon finding such a world, a large teleportation pillar was placed on it. This would allow the Elders to travel to that world at their leisure.

“Is Pathfinder still active? Where was it last?” she asks curiously.

“Unknown,” Talen will answer for Ironaya. “Ironaya only knows of Pathfinder, not any current information about it. Like Uncle Sharadin said, she only knows what was, not what is right now.”

Ironaya is capable of leaving this particular Elder City. Given how inhospitable the ruins are, Ironaya will be coming along with you when you leave.

“You are not worried about having a Sentient creature program with the walls of Karn’s Keep? Though it would be better in order to access it more freely. I guess it would be worth the risk.”

“It seems to only respond to Talen and ignores everyone else,” Lord Sharadin notes. “But it is worth testing out if she is docile when he is not around.”

“Ask her about the Artifact in the Sylvan Realm. Why would the elves of old make it difficult to get to, is it in working order? Or is it dormant for a reason.”

“I don't have to ask her about that, as I was in contact with that Pillar Artifact before,” Talen notes. “It's working fine. The elves put defense up around it to keep outsiders out. I can't really blame them.”

“Minds? How do you attack with your mind?” she asks curiously. Not like you can out think someone. She thinks to herself.

“Beings such as mindflayers do just that,” Silvarn explains. “As does Quirin. That does explain a few things. They manipulated their environment with their minds.”

“Can the dormant beings be terminated from here?” she asks curiously seeing how he has all this information at his fingertips or mind prints.

“Ironaya only knows of them,” Talen says. “She can't do anything about them.”


Ironaya leads the coalition to where the HIVE samples were stored. The building that they were in is long gone, having sunk into the mud. There really is nothing to see, just a empty field. But Ironaya will say that the samples are below ground.

“Let's make sure they stay that way,” Lord Sharadin says. The Archmage casts a Transmute Mud to Rock spell and in response the entire area, and deep into the ground, is changed into rock. “That should seal them in.”


The coalition makes their way back to the Pillar Artifact that they arrived in. Captain Roma and the Dauntless depart, flying back up through the rift overhead. Soon the Alphatian warship is gone. Silvarn also departs, returning to the Pillar Artifact that leads to lamina. Once there, she passes through the portal and is gone. Saryn and Quirin also depart, both returning to their far away homes. Lothtor will return to Karn's Keep with the rest of the coalition.

Ironaya travels about as face as the dwarves, so it takes time to lead her back to the Pillar Artifact. The twins are there awaiting everyone's return. The defensive shield is lowered once more while Talen activates the Pillar Artifact. Everyone steps through and you are now back at Karn's Keep.

“A fine meal awaits us upstairs,” Lord Sharadin will announce. “Everyone go and enjoy yourselves. This was a well earned victory.”

Moving things along. Everyone is back at Karn's Keep and there is a feast to be had!

I had written most of this post before Lia posted and had to go back and add her responses back in. That's why they all ended up essentially in the middle.

The Elves itinerary goes something like this. The rest of this day is free. Tomorrow is free as well, but on the day after the Sunflower needs to be at Desnae to pick up those elves traveling to the Sylvan Realm to assist in the conflict with the Slavers. The Sunflower than returns to the Sylvan Realm and the next day the slavers arrive.

But for right now, you are back at Karn's Keep.

"Thank you, Sharadin," Kylie says. "I will ask Jallarzi about it if I get the chance." Sharadin speaks further of his commitment to helping all of the Argents, and Kylie is gratified by his concern for her.

“Pathfinder was an Elder ship that flew through space,” Talen explains. “It looked for habitable worlds and upon finding one placed a world-to-world pillar on it. That way the Elders could just use it to go to any newly seeded world.”

“Unknown,” Talen will answer for Ironaya. “Ironaya only knows of Pathfinder, not any current information about it. Like Uncle Sharadin said, she only knows what was, not what is right now.”

Kylie finds this story very interesting. "That is truly amazing..." she says. "Does Ironaya know how many worlds received a pillar?" 'If it is still out there... that opens up all kinds of possibilities, both good and bad,' she thinks.

“That troubles me,” Lilia will admit. “If I am understanding this correctly, than there are other HIVE Queens asleep here in the ruins. We must make sure that they never wake up. Can Ironaya show us where they were kept?"

This idea startles Kylie and she mentally kicks herself for not thinking of it. If there are other threats buried here, those threats need to be ended.

“All we are speaking of right now are possibilities, Laucian,” Lilia comments. “While I do not see we elves having anything to do with these ruins, it could still offer a direct connection to the Sylvan Realm when it comes to matters of trade and passage. That is something I have to take into consideration when it comes to us dealing with the outside world.”

Kylie thinks for a moment. "It seems to me that what we do not know of can become a problem when we are least prepared to deal with it. Knowing what dangers or opportunities exist allows us to prepare for them."

“She can leave the city if someone directs her to,” Talen confirms. “She could come back with us to the Sylvan Realm!”

Kylie smiles at Talen's obvious enthusiasm.

“I'll go as well,” Talen speaks up. “There's more to learn with three more Elder cities there!”

Kylie smiles at Talen and gives his hand a squeeze. It suddenly occurs to her that she has been holding his hand for a while now and hadn't even noticed. Huh. It just feels right somehow.

“Before our mission here,” Lilia speaks up, “I too had considered such a thing but lacked the divine magic to pull it off. That Argent could have had insights into the HIVE to no other could. The intelligence learned may have been vital against the HIVE. Now that information is no longer necessary, other than her recovery of course.”

Kylie nods as she listens to the queen's comments. It is clear to her that she herself is too emotionally close to this to maintain her detachment. Lilia makes a good point about what the Hive Argent might be able to tell them of the Hive. "It occurs to me that we don't know for a fact that this is the only Hive outpost on this world -- or any other for that matter. Who knows where they may have spread to over the millennia since the Elders disappeared?"

“No, the imprisoned darkness was far away from the Beleme Swamp,” Lilia adds. “Those of us joined with Elspeth traveled back across the dark water from the swamp through the earth to far distant location. That's where the sliver of darkness was at. The chamber imprisoning it was damaged. Water seeping in touched the darkness and was transformed by it. This dark water than flowed through the earth before coming up in the swamp. We repaired the damage and purified the dark water so it could harm no other.”

“Sherwood Elf-Friend did tell us the tale of how this Dark God did come to this world long before any of our races did exist,” Lilia continues. “The gods to rally against him and eventually imprisoned him. He's still here and still imprisoned after all this time. Perhaps he even came from the darkness in the center of all things.”

"Were you able to determine how the chamber was damaged?" Kylie asks curiously. If it were to be damaged again, the danger would not doubt return.

“One of their own used the attack on their own kind,” Talen reports. “Sounds like he went nuts to me.”

"Or perhaps was infected by the darkness?" Kylie suggests.

“Let's make sure they stay that way,” Lord Sharadin says. The Archmage casts a Transmute Mud to Rock spell and in response the entire area, and deep into the ground, is changed into rock. “That should seal them in.”

Kylie watches as Lord Sharadin casts his spell and seals the ground in the area. It seems like a good temporary solution, though she worries that someone could eventually undo it and release the other Hive queens. Ultimately, destroying them would be a more permanent solution, though that may have to wait.

They return to the pillar artifact and Sharadin states that a meal has been prepared. Kylie passes through the portal once Talen opens it; it is strange to see Ironaya accompany them through into Karn's Keep. It has been a long and eventful day, so she will enjoy the meal and relax during the evening, chatting with those in attendance.

[Onas]

Onas Brightsword:

“From my observations,” Lilia will state, “all that seems to have survived from the Elders was these Pillar Artifacts of various sizes, some of their cities and creations. But no personal items, no furniture or things one would make use of everyday. The things that considered to be important were built to last.”

"As you say, my queen," Onas says respectfully.

“She says that their minds were their weapons,” Talen relates not completely understanding what that means.

“Minds? How do you attack with your mind?” she asks curiously. Not like you can out think someone. She thinks to herself.

“Beings such as mindflayers do just that,” Silvarn explains. “As does Quirin. That does explain a few things. They manipulated their environment with their minds.”

Onas tries to keep up with the discussion. "So -- if I'm understanding you right, Silvarn -- it is kind of like magic, but based on the mind rather than spells or divine powers." Onas considers that for a moment. "I can see how that could be very formidable."

Queen Lilia asks about other Hive Queens buried here, and thought that concerns Onas greatly. Talen says that the lizard statue will lead them to the place. After the battle they just had, he cannot help but wonder how they will overcome several of those giant flying bugs.

Eventually they reach the place where Ironaya says that the remaining Hive Queens are buried. Lord Sharadin casts a spell that hardens the muddy field into rigid stone. The archmage seems confident that it will do the trick, and Onas is not one to doubt him.

After a short trek, they return to Karn's Keep through the same pillar artifact that they arrived through. Onas is pleased to be out of that strange sunken city. The mention of a waiting meal sounds good to him and he follows the others upstairs after observing what they do with the reptilian golem.

[Lilia]

Lilia:

“Yes,” Talen answers. “Ironaya will led us to the location.”

“Very good,” Lilia will say.

The place where the HIVE eggs were stored is revealed. Lord Sharadin seals them away, at least for the time being.

“Let's make sure they stay that way,” Lord Sharadin says. The Archmage casts a Transmute Mud to Rock spell and in response the entire area, and deep into the ground, is changed into rock. “That should seal them in.”

“At least to something more permanent can be done,” Lilia adds.


Talen confirms that Ironaya can leave the ruins.

“She can leave the city if someone directs her to,” Talen confirms. “She could come back with us to the Sylvan Realm!”

“Perhaps,” Lilia counters, “It would it not be best to have her stay in Shillesta, among the Elder Ruins?”


Talen reveals information about a ship the Elders called Pathfinder. It seeded other worlds with a arrival pillar, allowing the Elders to travel there using their artifacts.

"Were you able to determine how the chamber was damaged?" Kylie asks curiously. If it were to be damaged again, the danger would not doubt return.

“There was a crack in the ceiling,” Lilia confirms. “Probably the result of earth tremors.”


With our business in Shelvestra wrapped up, we started to head back to Karn's Keep. Goodbye's are said as Captain Roma, Silvarn, Saryn and Quirin all depart. Travel is slow as Ironaya can only move at a dwarves pace. Eventually we are back in the large basement and Lilia lets out a sigh of relief.

“A fine meal awaits us upstairs,” Lord Sharadin will announce. “Everyone go and enjoy yourselves. This was a well earned victory.”

“Thank you,” Lord Sharadin,” Lilia compliments. “Most gracious.”

Having attended such feasts before, Lilia is confident that proper elfin food will be served along with fey wine.

Once apart from the others, Lilia will speak to those who traveled here with her. “My friends, we have spent weeks fighting numerous battles. I say that we have all earned a rest. We have no obligations for the rest of this day or for tomorrow. After that, we must arrive in Desnae in the Elfholds to bring back reinforcements to contend with the slavers. Lilia will appear at ease during the feast and will chat with those by her. She is curious to see how Myev is doing while we were gone. Afterwards, she'll go to the mage library and attempt to add new spells to her spell book. Then she will sleep in the Sunflower to be ready for what comes tomorrow.

“It seems to only respond to Talen and ignores everyone else,” Lord Sharadin notes. “But it is worth testing out if she is docile when he is not around.”

“She says that she was no designed for combat,” Talen relates. “She's a walking library not a fighter!”

“Perhaps,” Lilia counters, “It would it not be best to have her stay in Shillesta, among the Elder Ruins?”

“That makes more sense,” Talen says after a moments thought. “Once back at Karn's Keep, I'll send her on to Shillesta for safe keeping.”


The Elders had mental powers!

To Kylie he adds, “I don't know if you had any plans, but you are welcome to come along with us.”


Talen will eat the regular human food until he is ready to burst. Afterwards he'll relax, but makes a point to hit the mage library to pick up some new spells before departing.

Lia takes the information in turn and wonders than asks, “Would Ironaya know of it’s path? If it is similar to that of a caravan or ship, would it know of the path it planned?” she asks curiously.

“ I think that would be a wise idea. Beside putting us at ease.”

“I don't have to ask her about that, as I was in contact with that Pillar Artifact before,” Talen notes. “It's working fine. The elves put defense up around it to keep outsiders out. I can't really blame them.”

She listens to her brother then a slight smile comes to her lips, “Forgive me if you asked already. But Can you ask Ironaya, when was the Artifact in the palace last used? And if any other artifacts were active off world?” Lia asks curiously wondering if there was any other places that might have activated, Or were the elves being proactive in defending their home.

Lia says goodbye to Captain roma and waves as it departs. She also says goodbye to Silvarn, Saryn and Quirin offering her hand in friendship. “May your travel be short and your rest long. If you are ever in need, we are here for you as you were for us.” she says with a smile.

Stepping through the artifact, Lia looks to her Uncle. “One that we can all be proud of. It is good to work with our allies. To see our differences as strengths when we are together in a common goal.”

“ Seeing what the mages can do with four, I hate to see what they can do with all six!”

A smile etches her features as she thinks of Nightmist. “I’d like that!” she says with a widening grin. Though she can’t but wonder if her grandmother would approve of her decision. Turning to her Uncle, Would you and your daughters like to come? I am sure Grandmother would like to meet you.”

At the feast Lia will fill her plate and enjoy herself. When the music comes on Lia will get up and dance, feeling the freedom and movement of the music. Those that watch her will notice she seems at peace, though some of the movements look like a sword could be in hand.

[Laucian]

Laucian

“I have other methods at my disposal that would, providing they work as I believe they should, allow us to recover her body without much effort,” Lord Sharadin tells Laucian. “Argent was working on the Pillar Artifacts on my behalf and so I bear a measure of responsibility for what happened to her. I wish to make things right. Would you do any less for those under your command?”

“In truth until the Golden Gryphons, I only answered for myself and to Ehlonna.” he says simply. “I am concerned that if you disturb the area further that the whole structure or surrounding earth would once again consume what once was or harm those still that draw breath.”

“Of course I would. There is also a chance we could recover the other bodies of our fallen kin, even those that lost their way.” he says evenly not wishing to say the cleric’s name.

“Let's make sure they stay that way,” Lord Sharadin says. The Archmage casts a Transmute Mud to Rock spell and in response the entire area, and deep into the ground, is changed into rock. “That should seal them in.”

As the others begin to move away, Laucian will follow till he stops. He will cast soften stone and earth upon the roof of the cavern above where the hive queens stone grave is, in the hopes of collapsing the tunnel upon the area.

The coalition makes their way back to the Pillar Artifact that they arrived in. Captain Roma and the Dauntless depart, flying back up through the rift overhead. Soon the Alphatian warship is gone. Silvarn also departs, returning to the Pillar Artifact that leads to lamina. Once there, she passes through the portal and is gone. Saryn and Quirin also depart, both returning to their far away homes. Lothtor will return to Karn's Keep with the rest of the coalition.

Laucian says goodbye to each in turn wishing them safe travels. To the dragons he extends his arm in the warrior grip. “Thank you for your assistance. I fear without your assistance we would all be hive now.” he says simply knowing how vital to their cause they were.

At the mention of food, Laucian’s stomach begins to growl in anticipation. But the Queen wishes to have words.

Resting a free hand on his sword hilt, Laucian walks and stands near Gweyr as Lilia gives her speech. “Rest?” he mutters, “What is that?” he says he chuckles to himself. “ Make sure you do the same Highness..” he says as he inclines his head to Lilia.

As the feast begins, Laucian will enjoy whatever wine they have and food. He will spend sometime with Gweyr and the go speak with the dwarves. “It has been some time since I broke bread with dwarves.Might I offer you dwarves a drink?” he says as he lifts up a tankard of ale and looks to a serving wnech to fetch more for his bearded companions.

Looking to Gweyr as the night progresses, “ If we are to return to the Slyvian Realm perhaps we should return to the Elfholds to get somethings of home that we may need or want.”

[Kylie]

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:

Lilia seems to share Kylie's thought that they need to eventually come up with a more permanent solution for the buried Hive queens. Something to think upon as time permits...

Lilia and Talen discuss what to do with Ironaya. Lilia puts forward the idea of the golem staying in Shillesta, to which Talen agrees. "Seems like a good idea," Kylie concurs. "Having been constructed by the Elders, it may feel familiar to her." It is feels odd referring to the construct as 'her', but Talen seems to think that it is feminine on some level so she does her best to accept it.

“Mind and Will,” Talen mutters. Once he realizes that the others are looking at him, Talen adds, “The Elders believed in six elements to the universe. Air, Earth, Fire and Water like we do, but also added Mind and Will. That makes more sense now.”

Though she says nothing, this idea resonates in Kylie's mind. As the Elders seems to be more advanced in many ways, Kylie suspects that their knowledge of magic may be as well. She will keep this in mind as she continues to improve her theoretical understanding of magic.

Kylie nods. "From the way it was referenced, it sounded like the ship might be magical or sentient, and thus perhaps not dependent on crew. I guess I read too much into it. I was just conjecturing possibilities, really."

Lilia describes the damage to the chamber of the black water. "Good to know, Lilia. Thank you."

The food is wonderful, though Kylie eats lightly -- at least relative to her usual eating habits. For beverage, she sticks to the human wine, as she is still leery of the elven Feywine. Hearing the queen's words, Kylie gives some thoughts to how she would like to spend the free day. Her first thought is to visit her dad in Orlane. While it hasn't been that long, she had promised to visit him whenever she got the chance, and she really would like to see him.

Casting a glance at Lia, Talen will say,” We can go home and visit grandma! There is some much to tell her!”

Turning back to Lilia, Talen adds, “I think we'd like to be dropped off in Lost Valley to see our grandmother.”

Kylie smiles warmly at Talen and squeezes his hand. "I would like that, Talen," she says, thinking back to their first visit to the lost valley where they originally met Talen and Lia. "If there is time, I would also like to visit my dad."

As the feast wraps up, Kylie will join the other mages in the library. Looking around in wonder, she thinks about all of the accumulated knowledge contained here. It really is staggering, though perhaps small from the perspective of the Elders. Selecting a book from the shelves, she settles in to read...

[Onas]

Onas Brightsword:

Onas says goodbye to Captain Roma, Silvarn, Saryn, and Quirin when they depart. It has been an uplifting experience meeting and working with such diverse individuals.

“Mind and Will,” Talen mutters. Once he realizes that the others are looking at him, Talen adds, “The Elders believed in six elements to the universe. Air, Earth, Fire and Water like we do, but also added Mind and Will. That makes more sense now.”

Though he is not well versed in magic, his training did cover some basics of their beliefs regarding the nature of the universe. 'I wonder if there are yet other fundamental forces,' Onas muses. 'Surely the gods are a fundamental element of the universe. Could belief or devotion be a natural force as well?'

Stepping through the artifact, Lia looks to her Uncle. “One that we can all be proud of. It is good to work with our allies. To see our differences as strengths when we are together in a common goal.”

"Well said, Lia," Onas agrees with a nod.

The feast is a wonderful celebration, with good food and great companionship. Onas takes advantage of the opportunity to relax with his friends and comrades. Queen Lilia congratulates them all on yet another victory, and declares the next day to be one for pursuing personal interests or obligations. When she mentions visiting the Elfholds, he perks up at the opportunity to visit those he left behind.

As the feast progresses, Onas moves around the room, making time to talk with each of those present. He finds an opening across the table from the queen at one point and sits down. "I, too, would like to visit our homeland tomorrow; there are many that I would take council with."

Onas watches Lia dance for a while, admiring the grace of her movements. As the party winds down, Onas wanders off to find a secluded spot to perform a full devotional service for his patron. He has been far too busy lately to honor the Triune Lady as he should, so he will make that time tonight as best he may.

The elves are wrapping up their business in the sunken Elder City. A wide range of topics are being discussed.

Argents:

Lord Sharadin mentions what has transpired with the Argent that was returned from the Sylvan Realm while believing that they can recover the one taken over by the HIVE and subsequently killed. Laucian has his doubts.

“In truth until the Golden Gryphons, I only answered for myself and to Ehlonna.” he says simply. “I am concerned that if you disturb the area further that the whole structure or surrounding earth would once again consume what once was or harm those still that draw breath.”

“I do not think that will be an issue,” Lord Sharadin assures Laucian.

“Of course I would. There is also a chance we could recover the other bodies of our fallen kin, even those that lost their way.” he says evenly not wishing to say the cleric’s name.

“So you lost other elves during the cave in?” Lord Sharadin realizes. “Then perhaps we can accomplish both goals. My plan was to summon an Earth Elemental to do the job. They can travel through the ground as easily as you or I move through water. It should be able to find the bodies and bring them back up to where we can recover them. We can accomplish both of our goals.”


Pathfinder:

They have learned about the Pathfinder, an Elder Ship that traveled the stars and placed a world-to-world teleport pillar on promising worlds it discovered.

“Pathfinder had a certain path, but it should have completed it long ago,” Talen explains. “The ship had a control center. Some place Ironaya calls Brill. From what I gather its one of the main Elder Worlds. Where ever that is.”

And if any other artifacts were active off world?” Lia asks curiously wondering if there was any other places that might have activated, Or were the elves being proactive in defending their home.

“People from the east tried to use the pillar to reach the Sylvan Realm just recently,” Talen recalls from his contact with that pillar a few days ago. “But they ran into the Elves defenses and had to go back. Ironaya has knowledge of the pillars, but does not have access to their information. I can access it when I am close to them. Makes sense that she can do the same thing.”


Elders were Psionic:

The Elders had mental powers, not the traditional magical might available to mages and priests. Instead, they were able to do things with their minds.

Onas tries to keep up with the discussion. "So -- if I'm understanding you right, Silvarn -- it is kind of like magic, but based on the mind rather than spells or divine powers." Onas considers that for a moment. "I can see how that could be very formidable."

“Essentially,” Silvarn answers.

“The mind directsss thessse abilitiesss,” Quirin adds, still in his couatl form. “but it isss the ssstrength of onesss will that drivesss them.”


Saying goodbye:

The mission complete, the coalition starts to go their separate ways. The Dauntless sails off through the rift over the sunken city and is soon gone from sight. Silvarn passes through the portal that leads to the distant world of Lamina. Saryn and Quirin depart together, with the gold dragon taking the couatl back to his home jungle. Saryn says that he makes his home in at Seapoint on the island of Ochalea in the Pearl Islands. This is a tropical location and explains why he was so scantily dressed.

Laucian says goodbye to each in turn wishing them safe travels. To the dragons he extends his arm in the warrior grip. “Thank you for your assistance. I fear without your assistance we would all be hive now.” he says simply knowing how vital to their cause they were.

“It is good to see the younger races band together in a crisis,” Saryn states. “To often you argue and wage war over trivial things instead of focusing on the larger dangers in the world.”

Lia says goodbye to Captain Roma and waves as it departs. She also says goodbye to Silvarn, Saryn and Quirin offering her hand in friendship. “May your travel be short and your rest long. If you are ever in need, we are here for you as you were for us.” she says with a smile.

“We shall meet again, Lia,” Silvarn will say before she departs. “You can count on that.”

Karn's Keep:

What remains of the coalition travels back to Karn's Keep. There Lord Sharadin has had a feast prepared for everyone to consume upon return. Ironaya travels with the group as well and then Talen sends her on to Shillesta to wait for your arrival there.

Lilia announces to the elves that they have the rest of this day and tomorrow to do what they please. She plans to take the Sunflower to the Elfholds tomorrow and can drop people off at other destinations along the way. Talen suggests that he and Lia return to the Lost Valley and visit their grandmother, Nightmist.

A smile etches her features as she thinks of Nightmist. “I’d like that!” she says with a widening grin. Though she can’t but wonder if her grandmother would approve of her decision. Turning to her Uncle, Would you and your daughters like to come? I am sure Grandmother would like to meet you.”

“I had planned to do so at some point,” Lord Sharadin states in regards to visiting Nightmist. “Tomorrow seems as good as time as any. There is much I wish to discuss with her. For instance, she knows my own father better that I ever died. He vanished during the Battle of Shadowkeep when I was a baby.”

“In fact,” Lord Sharadin continues, “I was planning on taking the Lady Iris towards Elcadan tomorrow. I can stop off at the Lost Valley along the way, leaving the Sunflower free to travel to the Elfholds without this side trip. Is that agreeable to all?”


The feast offers a wide variety of foods for Lord Sharadin's guests. One area is set up for the elves who tend to prefer natural foods found in nature. There are fruits and vegetables and nuts to be had and salads make of those ingredients. Food that is light to the palate. Fey wine is there for consumption. To a human, elfin food can be consumed, but having it all the time is not very fulfilling.

The dwarves have their own area with distinctly different style of foods. Several kegs of ales are tapped. The dwarves favor meats and stews with vegetables served in a thick gravy with bread. While humans can eat dwarven food, they will find it to be very bland and lacking of any seasoning. To an elf, its very heavy and uncomfortable to consume.

The last section has the human foods and drinks. There is beef and chicken and stews to be had, along with fresh bread. Wine and water are also available. To a dwarf, humans kill all the flavor in food, while elves find it more palatable than dwarven cooking, but not something they could eat often.

Lothtor receives more healing once back at Karn's Keep and he is now feeling more like his old self. He partakes in all the varieties of food to be had and engages all in conversation.


Myev is overjoyed to see everyone when they return. She's studied the maps here at Karn's Keep enough to help her pilot the Sunflower to its destination. Surprisingly, her own particular tastes in food are not represented here. While she can eat the traditional elfin fare just fine, its not to her liking. The dwarven foods are too heavy and the human meal is just lacking 'something' that she cannot put into words. While most elves are vegetarians, Myev does not have a problem eating meat. However what she is used to is not prepared in the normal human or dwarven style.

Laucian joins Andlin and Lothtor in spending time at the dwarven table sharing ale.

As the feast begins, Laucian will enjoy whatever wine they have and food. He will spend sometime with Gweyr and the go speak with the dwarves. “It has been some time since I broke bread with dwarves. Might I offer you dwarves a drink?” he says as he lifts up a tankard of ale and looks to a serving wench to fetch more for his bearded companions.

“Have ye ever known a dwarf to turn down ale?” one of the dwarves calls out followed by the laughter of the others. “Ye elves more than held your own this day. It was an honor to fight by yer side!

Looking to Gweyr as the night progresses, “ If we are to return to the Sylvan Realm perhaps we should return to the Elfholds to get somethings of home that we may need or want.”

“It has been a while since I was last home,” Gweyr agrees. “Yes, I could stand to stop in Pinitel and pick up my belongings.”

Lothtor will step up to Lilia as the evening is winding down. “With your permission, Your Majesty, I would like to accompany you on your trip to the Elfholds and to the Sylvan Realm beyond. I think it would be a fascinating experience.”

GM Notes:

Here's where I have people going come the morning.

The Sunflower will fly to the Elfholds and drop people off along the way.

Valena's home is in Feador, and pretty much the first Clan Hold the Sunflower will reach. Just past it is Pinitel, the Longrunner Clan Hold. This is Gweyr's home. Lilia and Laucian are from Ainsun, and that is in the northwest part of the Elfholds. Shieldwall is the home of Arlen and Onas Brightsword and that is in the southwest. Myev will travel with the elves, but has no preference on where she goes. Its all new to her!

Kylie, Lia, and Talen will be traveling on the Lady Iris to the Lost Valley along with the Lord Sharadin and his daughters Terry and Sherry. At some point this group needs to reach Desnae to rejoin the others on the trip to the Sylvan Realm.

The Lady Iris was not present when you arrived earlier this morning, but has since returned and it sits in the small lake outside Karn's Keep with the Sunflower.

Ironaya is based on a Titan Keeper from Wow, constructs made of earth and stone. That one is a she, so I've kept it with the Elder Construct.

Now what?

[Lilia]

Lilia:

Lilia mostly listens to the ongoing conversation about recovering the body of the slain Argent. Lord Sharadin seems confident that he can perform this task without triggering another cave in. Laucian is skeptical.

“So you lost other elves during the cave in?” Lord Sharadin realizes. “Then perhaps we can accomplish both goals. My plan was to summon an Earth Elemental to do the job. They can travel through the ground as easily as you or I move through water. It should be able to find the bodies and bring them back up to where we can recover them. We can accomplish both of our goals."

“That would be most welcomed, Lord Sharadin,” Lilia speaks up. “Those fallen elves cannot rest properly until they are returned to an elfin land. It is a task we would have had to do eventually and I still was unsure how to accomplish it.”


Talk turns on what to do with Ironaya, the walking Elder Library. Talen wants to bring it to the Sylvan Realm. Lilia would rather keep it out of the elf lands as its presence would only cause problems in her mind. She suggests taking it to the Elder City to the north.

“She says that she was not designed for combat,” Talen relates. “She's a walking library not a fighter!”

“That may be,” Lilia counters, “but something that large could harm others inadvertently due to her great size.”

“That makes more sense,” Talen says after a moments thought. “Once back at Karn's Keep, I'll send her on to Shillesta for safe keeping.”

“Thank you, Talen,” Lilia states. “I believe that would be best for all.”


The existence of an Elder Ship called the Pathfinder has been discovered. It was this vessel that placed the world-to-world teleports on other planets so that the Elder could just teleport there.

Kylie nods. "From the way it was referenced, it sounded like the ship might be magical or sentient, and thus perhaps not dependent on crew. I guess I read too much into it. I was just conjecturing possibilities, really."

“I had not considered that possibility,” Lilia admits. “I assumed that it was crewed by Elders only.”

“Ironaya says that while there were Elders on the ship, there were also beings like her,” Talen relates. “Unliving constructs designed for certain tasks. Those could still be around.”

“They could be indeed,” Lilia repeats. “Assuming this ship still even exists.”

“Pathfinder had a certain path, but it should have completed it long ago,” Talen explains. “The ship had a control center. Some place Ironaya calls Brill. From what I gather its one of the main Elder Worlds. Where ever that is.”

“I had also not considered that either,” Lilia speaks up. “The six Elder cities were each created for a specific line of research or production. Clearly they were not the Elder's home. As Talen says, this 'Brill' must have been an Elder world. That would be something to see. Again, assuming it stills there after all this time.”


Once back at Karn's Keep, Lilia announces that everyone has some free time to do with as they please before dealing with the Slavers.

Casting a glance at Lia, Talen will say,” We can go home and visit grandma! There is some much to tell her!”

Turning back to Lilia, Talen adds, “I think we'd like to be dropped off in Lost Valley to see our grandmother.”

“I am sure we can arrange that,” Lilia will say but is really unsure if the Sunflower could reach the Lost Valley and all the needed locations in the Elfholds as well. Traveling in such a manner is still a new experience.

In quick succession, Kylie and Lord Sharadin and his daughters join the now growing group returning to the Lost Valley. Lord Sharadin offers up an alternative way to reach that destination.

“I had planned to do so at some point,” Lord Sharadin states in regards to visiting Nightmist. “Tomorrow seems as good as time as any. There is much I wish to discuss with her. For instance, she knows my own father better that I ever died. He vanished during the Battle of Shadowkeep when I was a baby.”

“In fact,” Lord Sharadin continues, “I was planning on taking the Lady Iris towards Elcadan tomorrow. I can stop off at the Lost Valley along the way, leaving the Sunflower free to travel to the Elfholds without this side trip. Is that agreeable to all?”

“Your assistance would be most appreciated, Lord Sharadin,” Lilia states in a pleased voice. “However, I do not see just how you could reach Desnae on your own. But, we plan to be at the Shillesta the day after that. Perhaps you could reach one of the Pillar Artifacts and reach the Elder Ruins on your own?”

Resting a free hand on his sword hilt, Laucian walks and stands near Gweyr as Lilia gives her speech. “Rest?” he mutters, “What is that?” he says he chuckles to himself. “ Make sure you do the same Highness..” he says as he inclines his head to Lilia.

“I plan too, Laucian,” Lilia announces. “No need to worry about that.”


Myev is waiting for us when we return and tells who she has studied the maps and is confident that she can properly navigate the Sunflower's course.

“That's wonderful, Myev,” Lilia happily tells the tall elf. “You'll have your chance tomorrow to do so.”

Lilia eats lightly, as she tends to do and has some Fey wine to help take the stress of the day away. Surprisingly, Myev doesn't seem to favor traditional elfin foods and neither the human or dwarven fare appeal to here.

“Then, if I may ask, what do you consider normal food for yourself?” Lilia wonders.

Lothtor will step up to Lilia as the evening is winding down. “With your permission, Your Majesty, I would like to accompany you on your trip to the Elfholds and to the Sylvan Realm beyond. I think it would be a fascinating experience.”

Lilia is momentarily surprised by the request from the Steel Dragon. “You would be most welcomed to spend time among us, Lothtor. In the proper form of course.”

Its not like Lilia could tell a shape shifting dragon that he cannot go somewhere. He could simply do so should he so desire. Lilia is pleased that he at least asked first.

Once done adding new spells to her spell book, Lilia retires to her cabin on the Sunflower. She notes that the Lady Iris is now here, while it was absent when the Sunflower arrived earlier today. The captured Alphatian ship now seems to have a crew on it. It seems like Lord Sharadin is getting ready to make use of this new asset.

[Kylie]

Kylie Lanthorn the Half-Elven:

“Hundreds she says,” Talen reports. “But that was long ago. There has to be more by now!”

"Hundreds, perhaps thousands of other worlds..." Kylie muses. She had never before considered the possibility of there being that many other worlds out there. "Talen, would these have all been habitable worlds? Ones that people like us could conceivably live on? Does Ironaya know how they chose which worlds to place pillars upon?"

“I had not considered that possibility,” Lilia admits. “I assumed that it was crewed by Elders only.”

“Ironaya says that while there were Elders on the ship, there were also beings like her,” Talen relates. “Unliving constructs designed for certain tasks. Those could still be around.”

“They could be indeed,” Lilia repeats. “Assuming this ship still even exists.”

Kylie absorbs Talen's response. "So it is conceivable that they could still be out there planting pillars. If the ship still exists -- as you say, Lilia -- and the constructs were capable of managing the ship and placing the pillars by themselves, that is."

“Pathfinder had a certain path, but it should have completed it long ago,” Talen explains. “The ship had a control center. Some place Ironaya calls Brill. From what I gather its one of the main Elder Worlds. Where ever that is.”

"Hmm..." Kylie thinks about this for a moment. "This is an interesting point. If the set path were completed and the Elders were gone by time they returned to Brill, what might the constructs have done? While it is possible that they may have selected a new path, they may have just chosen to wait there. I don't really know how much autonomy or decision-making ability Ironaya and her kind possess."

As Talen says, this 'Brill' must have been an Elder world. That would be something to see. Again, assuming it stills there after all this time.”

Lilia makes an interesting point. Still, Kylie is not certain that she will live long enough to visit the many places they already know of to explore.

When the time comes, Kylie wishes Quirin, Saryn, and Silvarn well. This is the second time she has met Silvarn, and she hopes there will be a third. Quirin's departure causes the world to seem a little more bleak; she hadn't realized just how much she had adjusted to having his aura of goodness and peace around her.


Kylie is very pleased to see Myev again and gives her a big hug. Apparently she has spent much of the time with the maps and has learned a lot that will be helpful in piloting the flying ships. "Myev, it is so good to see you! Have you joined the mage guild here? There are many tomes and spell books to learn from." When Lilia raises the question of what Myev prefers to eat, Kylie leans in to hear the answer.

[Onas]

Onas Brightsword:

The discussion of the Elder ship flying through space and visiting other worlds proves a bit much for him, so Onas spends that time chatting with the dwarven warriors.

“The mind directsss thessse abilitiesss,” Quirin adds, still in his couatl form. “but it isss the ssstrength of onesss will that drivesss them.”

The couatl's sibilant voice sounds both strange and yet beautiful to the elven crusader. "These are the same type of powers you weild, Quirin? And Talen has them too?"

It is good to see Lothtar returned to full health once again. Still, sometimes the emotional and mental damage can be just as debilitating as the physical -- and far harder to heal. "How are you feeling now, Lothtar?" Onas asks during the feast. "You appear to have recovered well."

At one point during the feast, Onas notes Myev sitting and talking with a couple of the others. Though he doesn't know her well, he eventually makes his way over and offers greetings to the unusually-tall elf. "Hello, Myev. How are you doing? What have you been up to during your visit here?"

[Talen]

Talen:

Talen confers with Ironaya for a few moments before answering. “The Elders seem to have been like us in that we can both survive in the same environments. They did not like cold all that much. Guess that's normal for lizards. The worlds where there were pillars placed were habitable at that time. Now? Who knows?”

"Hmm..." Kylie thinks about this for a moment. "This is an interesting point. If the set path were completed and the Elders were gone by time they returned to Brill, what might the constructs have done? While it is possible that they may have selected a new path, they may have just chosen to wait there. I don't really know how much autonomy or decision-making ability Ironaya and her kind possess."

“I don't know,” Talen will say. “If they are like Ironaya here, then once their last instructions were completed, they would simply wait for new orders. I guess they react instead of act.”


Later on, Lilia proclaims that the following day we are free to do as we see fit. Talen immediately blurts out about going home to Lost Valley. Lia agrees.

“Then its settled then,” Talen chimes in. “Both sides of our family will get to meet each other.”

“In fact,” Lord Sharadin continues, “I was planning on taking the Lady Iris towards Elcadan tomorrow. I can stop off at the Lost Valley along the way, leaving the Sunflower free to travel to the Elfholds without this side trip. Is that agreeable to all?”

“Works for me,” Talen says.

“Your assistance would be most appreciated, Lord Sharadin,” Lilia states in a pleased voice. “However, I do not see just how you could reach Desnae on your own. But, we plan to be at the Shillesta the day after that. Perhaps you could reach one of the Pillar Artifacts and reach the Elder Ruins on your own?”

“How far away from the ruins we just left is Elcadan?” Talen wonders. “We could get dropped of there and use the Pillar Artifact to return to Shillesta.”

Kylie smiles warmly at Talen and squeezes his hand. "I would like that, Talen," she says, thinking back to their first visit to the lost valley where they originally met Talen and Lia. "If there is time, I would also like to visit my dad."

Talen smiles back, enjoying the simple wonder of just holding hands. “Where does your dad live?” Talen will ask. “Close to Elcadan?”


Talen indulges in the chance to eat some human food. This is far more to his liking that the natural foods that elves favor. Afterwards, he makes his way to the mage library to add more spells to his spell book. Much to his surprise, Talen discovers that he has access to a whole new level of spells that he could not cast before.

As the feast wraps up, Kylie will join the other mages in the library. Looking around in wonder, she thinks about all of the accumulated knowledge contained here. It really is staggering, though perhaps small from the perspective of the Elders. Selecting a book from the shelves, she settles in to read...

After a time Kylie enters the library. Talen can't help but notice her and glance in her direction. In time her presence becomes too distracting and closes the books that he has open. After putting the books away, Talen comes closer.

“I was thinking about going for a walk,” Talen says. “Get some fresh air to clear my head. Want to come along?”
