Operation: Graystone #29
Operation: Graystone #29
Operation: Graystone #29
April 16th, CR 569
The squads are engaging another caravan that they found moving towards the goblin lair. The caravan was ambushed and thus far the battle decidedly one sided. Vernar strikes the ogre (#15) before him once more with sword and axe finishing him off. Butternut climbs up on top of the wagon and starts to remove the sleeping hobgoblin archers. After dealing with the ogre, Vernar climbs up on top of the next wagon to do the same to those archers.
With this part of the caravan under control, Vardra, Gerett, Kendell and Sorvani rush to aid those in the front of the caravan while Wimzy moves closer to keep an eye on things.
A bit further along, Lucyus and Sann converge on ogre #5 and between the two of them put it down. With the number of enemy starting to dwindle, Kaylessa puts two arrows into ogre #3 and it drops having been wounded by Flare earlier. Flare moves ahead to get a bead on ogre #2, wounding it.
Lucyus, Vardra, Kendell and Gerett all converge on the last two living ogres and the beasts of burden did not stand a chance. All the ogres were quickly slain and others work to remove the sleeping hobgoblins. In short order, the battle has ended!
A quick look shows that all of the wagons were empty. Clearly this caravan was looking to pick up supplies from the goblin lair, not drop them off. Ren runs around looking all the bodies of their coins. The enemy forces are dealt with as darkness starts to fall.
“Anyone need healing?” Wimzy will inquire in the fading light.
As night starts to come in, a strange yellowish-orange glow is noticed far off through the forest. It seems to be coming from the direction of the main road, where the caravan that M'Lady spotted earlier today was moving. It is the glow of fire! Something off in that direction is burning!

GM Notes:
The fire off in the distance is over a mile away, so not an immediate threat, assuming that it is the forest on fire and not something else. The main road is around that distance away too.
Hit Points:
Butternut – 23 of 26
Kaylessa - 11 of 16
Vernar – 41 of 45

Butternut:
Seeing that Vernar is confident about finishing the wounded ogre alone, Butternut clambers up onto the last wagon. Moving from one sleeping hobgoblin to the next, she efficiently slits their throats while whistling a jaunty tune. Once done with those on this wagon, she makes her way up the caravan from wagon to wagon eliminating any surviving opponents as she goes. She is soon covered in blood and gore, which bothers her not at all.
Eventually, Butternut becomes aware that the fighting is done and no more throats need cutting. Looking around from the top of the wagon she's on, the halfling tunnel-rat notices the flickering glow to the south. She turns and hails her companions and points toward the strange light. "Hey everyone! Looks like something's burning down near the main road!"

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
Trotting up the line of wagons, Vardra sees that Gerett and Kendall have the ogres hitched to the next wagon well in hand and Sorvani not far behind. "Good job!" he enthuses and waves them forward. "I think the last few are toward the front."
As he continues forward, he gets a glimpse of Lucyus advancing up the caravan. 'Must've had the same idea,' Vardra surmises. He passes the third wagon just as Sann and the paladin cut down the remaining ogre there, so he keeps going.
At the second wagon, he sees both ogres sprout arrows; the far one on its knees and flopping forward. He knows that Kendell and Gerett are just behind him, so he uses his speed to reach the front wagon. Though wounded, the ogre there is still struggling to get free, so Vardra drives his sword though the ugly brute's stomach. The ogre drops like a stone.
Walking back down the line, the soldier sees that all of the enemy are down and the last of the sleeping hobgoblins are being dealt with as Ren relieves them of any valuables. Wimzy comes into view near the burning middle wagon looking for anyone in need of healing, but it seems most of them have come through just fine.
At that moment, he hears Butternut call out something about a fire and looks in the direction the gore-encrusted halfling's pointing. It does look like something may be burning, so he scans the area for their other woodsman. "Flare? Can you send M'Lady down to take another look over yonder?"

Vernar -
Vernar finishes fighting the ogre and moves up onto the wagon, making short work of any hobgoblins slumbering. From his vantage point, he looks around and spots Butternut taking care of a few sleeping foes while most of the group has moved on to finish up the fighting at the front of the caravan. Retrieving his daggers and buckling everything down after wiping off the blood and gore, Vernar rejoins the others.
"I do not want t' be sayin' that was easy, but..." he lets his voice trail off as he glances along the tree line seeing if anything is lurking in the growing darkness.
The one thing Vernar notices at the same time as most of the group is that there seems to be something on fire a good distance away. Vardra asks Flare to send his bird, so the dwarf simply waits to hear the report and whatever Erisciana and Lucyus decide to be the next course of action.

Re: Operation: Graystone #29
Small Update:
Flare sends M'Lady off to scout out what the source of the burning is. The fire is at least a mile away and if memory serves, the main road connecting Gateway to Fort Graystone should be in that area.
About 15 minutes later, M'Lady returns and lands on Flare's arm. She squawks for a time to Flare. Finally, the ranger is ready to make his report.
“She says that the large caravan she spotted earlier is now on fire!” Flare relates. “It's been attacked, but she can't tell by what. All she sees are these creatures fighting among themselves.”
Flare gestures towards the bodies of the hobgoblins and ogres.
Now what?

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
When M'Lady returns, the soldier listens thoughtfully to Flare's translation of the bird's report. "Could there be two factions among the Hextorite forces?" he asks. "If so, letting them fight it out and then sweeping in to mop up those that remain could go a long way toward helping the fort. I know we're probably low on spells at this point, but it seems like a golden opportunity that we shouldn't pass up. Once we get close, the scouts can observe and determine the best time to attack." He looks around to see if anyone else has a better idea.

Kaylessa
Kaylessa sees the smoke in the distance, as she begins to refill her quiver.
Flare’s bird soon returns with news apparently they are fighting each other. “Perhaps when we removed the Cleric of Hextor, it created unrest?” she asks the others.
“ I could use some, priestess.” she says in reply. “ I was grazed by two arrows, but bandages would probably work just as well.”
“Anyone need healing?” Wimzy will inquire in the fading light.

Lucyus
As the sounds of battle draw to a close, it is quickly noticed that these wagons were picking up instead of dropping off. Even still it is a blow to the enemy supply line and less humanoids that the land has to defend against.
Picking up a tattered cloth, Lucyus wipes the blades of his battleaxe as he looks around to the others. None look worse for ware as Flare send ups his bird to scout about as a smoke plume is seen. Upon it’s return, Mi’lady tells of the humanoids fighting one another.
“Vernar, let us see what the humanoids are about. Observe and report but do not engage as we are losing daylight. I do not know how well we would do in a night skirmish ill prepared. Agreed?”

Vernar -
Once his group is ready, Vernar will make haste towards the fire and the fighting. With that commotion, there should be little issue with moving up stealthily. Still, he will make sure he stays off the main road and keeps a sharp lookout for scouts, outriders, or anyone else who might not be in the middle of the fray that could pose a problem to the scouts.
"Certainly," Vernar responds and then turns to the rest of the scouts. "Shall we be off once more?"“Vernar, let us see what the humanoids are about. Observe and report but do not engage as we are losing daylight. I do not know how well we would do in a night skirmish ill prepared. Agreed?”

Butternut:
Climbing down off the wagon, Butternut returns toward the other. As she goes, she checks each wagon she passes to confirm that they are empty. She spots Ren rifling through the various hobgoblins' pockets when she passes a gap between two wagons.
Flare sends his avian companion to take a look at the fire. While they wait for M'Lady's return, Butternut rips a swatch of fabric off one of the hobgoblins and uses the scrap to wipe the worst of the gore from her face and clean her weapons. She's never forgotten her training from Galen and his crew, and he was a big proponent of weapon maintenance.
The hawk returns and Flare relays her message. Apparently, the enemy are fighting among themselves. Kaylessa suggests that it might have something to do with their killing of the Hextorite priest a couple nights ago. "That makes some sense. An army that large is likely to include hobgoblins from different tribes, and the priests may be necessary to keep them working together."
A decision is made to investigate the fire.

"I'm ready!" Butternut asserts, smiling. Noting that Ren is crouched over yet another hobgob, she calls to him. "Hey Ren! Come on! We got work to do!" She quickly makes sure that her weapons are rigged for quiet movement, then starts off into the woods on Vernar's flank. She takes the side nearest the road, as their is a little more moonlight there which helps her see more clearly. Re: Operation: Graystone #29
Post Continued:
April 16th, CR 569
The attack on the second caravan went much easier than expected and was taken out without much fuss. However as the night sets in, a distant fire back around the area of the main road can be seen. Flare sends M'Lady out to scout once more.
While M'Lady is away, Wimzy inquires if anyone needs healing.
M'Lady returns and reports that the caravan it originally saw is now burning and being attacked by other hobgoblins and ogres! Lucyus calls for the scouts to go forth and observe the situation. Vernar gathers up Butternut, Flare and Ren and is off into the woods.
After the scouts vanish, the rest of the combined squads gather up their horses. They clean up and wait for the scouts to return while keeping a fair distance from the caravan they just took out.
Up ahead, the scouts move through the underbrush along the side of the road. There is plenty of cover here and travel goes quickly. As they get closer to their destination, the sounds of battle get louder and louder. Finally, the scouts are able to secure hiding places close enough to get a good view of the battle.
The majority of these wagons are burning, as is some of the foliage in the immediate area. Unlike the wagons the squad just sacked, these ones are loaded with supplies. Many of the enemy forces are down and a few are still locked in combat with their attackers.
As M'Lady suggested, most of those involved in the struggle are hobgoblins and ogres but not all of them. However, the ogres are mostly the pullers of the wagons and not real combatants. Obviously, these ogres are weaker members of that foul race and have no real combat skill. Otherwise, they would not be regulated to such a menial task.
Two female ogres are wading into the battle with the hobgoblins, sending the goblinoids flying with their clubs. Backing up the ogress' are several female orcs and hobgoblins! What looks to be a goblin female looks down the battle from the top of one of the wagons not burning. This goblin goes into spell casting and sends a pair of Magic Missiles at one of the hobgoblins near the two lady ogres.
“Zam!” the female goblin calls out in excitement upon completing her spell.
“Yes, Zammie, you did well”, another voice says in common close to the goblin.
That attracts Vernar's attention the being near the spell casting goblin and he recognizes her. It's the female dark elf who stole a horse a few nights ago and caught Kaylessa and Vernar in a web spell! This drow seems to be leading the attack!

Butternut:
Fire is spotted down near the main road, so the scouts set off to investigate. They glide through the underbrush, keeping their senses peeled for any sign of ambush or foes. As they draw closer to the source of the firelight, the unmistakable sounds of combat are heard.
Moving more slowly so as to avoid being noticed, each of them finds a hidden spot where they can observe the battle. From where she's tucked in, it looks to Butternut like nearly all the wagons are aflame and look to be fully loaded! That's gonna be a blow for those attacking the fort.
As reported by Flare's companion, those attacking the wagons consist of goblins, hobgoblins, ogres, and orcs. Stranger still, the attackers are all female! One of the female goblins casts Magic Missile at a male hobgob, and shouts excitedly. Another responds, though Butternut cannot see who.
Watching the females defeat their male counterparts brings a joyful smile to Butternut's face, though she manages to suppress a rousing whoop. Getting into the spirit of the moment, Butternut looks for a male target to receive a quarrel from her crossbow. She's more than happy to help out her fellow women in putting a stop to their men's indiscretions...

That way, we can help out the scouts if they get into trouble, or help press the attack, whichever the case might be."

Vernar -
Observing the battle from the safety of the darkness and sufficient cover, Vernar watches what appears to be a collection of female humanoids attacking and destroying a fully loaded caravan of supplies. He catches Butternut's smile at seeing the females of a variety of species laying waste to the males, but he is distracted before he can acknowledge her joy.
He motions to Ren and Butternut to find better, deeper cover while we wait. As he looks over at Butternut, he thinks he sees her ready to fire a crossbow bolt. Knowing he can't call out without alerting the enemy, he hunkers down, hoping that the origin of her shot is not realized.

Lucyus
“We will move up accordingly, though as long as Vernar and the others do as they were asked, there should be no danger.” the Paladin cleric says then thinks, As long as no one does anything stupid.
Lucyus will have the main group move up about a mile away from the plume of smoke.
Lucyus watches as the scouts begin to move off in the growing darkness. Silently he hopes they do not run into trouble. But if they only observe and report they should be fine, the paladin reassures himself. But then he hears the words of Vardra.Vardra checks his quivers, and tops them off with extras taken from the dead hobgoblin archers. Seeing the others fetching their horses, he does the same. He also collects the reins of one of the scouts' mounts. That done, he rejoins the rest of the squad. "You know, it might be a good idea to move partway down the road toward that fire. That way, we can help out the scouts if they get into trouble, or help press the attack, whichever the case might be."
“We will move up accordingly, though as long as Vernar and the others do as they were asked, there should be no danger.” the Paladin cleric says then thinks, As long as no one does anything stupid.
Lucyus will have the main group move up about a mile away from the plume of smoke.

Kaylessa
The generalist elf gathers whatever arrows she can find and hears the call for the scouts to move out. As she returns to the group she finds that the scouts had already left, taking Flare in her stead. Shrugging to herself she hears Vardra and Lucyus speak of what to do and is ready to move out when the direction is given.

The scouts have gone ahead to investigate the source of the fire spotted on the main road. Turns out that it was the caravan that M'Lady had spotted earlier. Apparently, the caravan the squads just took out was a different one. This new caravan is already under attack and some of it is burning. The attackers are mostly female goblinoids along with a female drow!
Vernar motions for Kaylessa to go back to the rest of the group and report what has been found. At nearly the same time, Butternut takes aim at an unsuspecting hobgoblins and drills a crossbow bolt into the back of his head! The hobgoblin falls over and given the on going battle, no one seems to notice that this attack came from elsewhere. The battle mostly seems to be with the hobgoblins, as the ogres pulling the wagons are limited in what they can do.
The rest of the squad has rounded up the horses and has mounted up. Vardra suggests moving closer in case the scouts need back up. Lucyus agrees and the group starts to slow ride around the caravan they just defeated and ride towards the main road. Night has fallen by now, a light source will be needed among the dark forest. The scouts horses are brought along as well.
After a few minutes of riding, Kaylessa comes into view and reports what is going on.
GM Notes:
The squad was already a mile away from the action. Now you're about half a mile.

Vernar -
Butternut does indeed fire her crossbow, hitting a hobgoblin with what looks like a killing blow. Thankfully, no one on the battlefield seems the wiser, so Vernar lets out the breath he was holding in relief.
With little else to do but wait, Vernar settles in somewhere well hidden but as comfortable as he can manage. As the daylight fades, he keeps track of the battle as best he can with his dwarven eyes, periodically glancing at Ren and Butternut to make sure they remain safe as well.

Butternut:
Spotting a male hobgoblin standing over a female goblin with sword raised, Butternut mutters, "Not in this lifetime..." and fires. Her bolt plows into the back of his head, causing it to practically explode like an overripe melon.
She turns to Vernar with a huge grin on her face, which fades away when she sees the consternation on his. "Sorry. Got carried away," Butternut whispers. Noting his gestures, she moves a little ways in the other direction and selects a new clump of foliage to hide in. She continues to observe the battle, doing her best to resist the urge to participate further.

Kayless hangs back as Butternut and Vernar move forward. It is to far to make out what the halfling is doing but she sees Vernar tenses then look her way. He than motions for the elf to go back and inform the others.
Turning on her heel and running, Kaylessa runs back the way she came. She sees the horses and their riders soon enough as she bends over and catches her breath.
“The drow and other humanoids are attacking the Hobgoblins. Come on I’ll show you but you must be quiet!”
Kaylessa will be ready to lead the remainder of the group to the scouts.

Riding slowly out the mounted group runs into Kaylessa as she doubles over catching her breath and telling of their findings.
“This is fortunate and unexpected.” he says easily. “Lead on, Kaylessa. We will follow your lead.” he says simply as he urges the other forward after the elf.

Kaylessa has returned to the main group who was waiting on their mounts. She explains that a different force of goblin, hobgoblin, ogre and even a drow females attacked this other caravan, setting it on fire. The riders pick up their pace and move closer to the battle site.
While the scouts watch and wait, the fighting continues. The drow female that Vernar spotted moves out of sight once more, along with the goblin that cast the Magic Missile. The smoke from the burning caravan thickens as the barrels of goblin spit go up. Some thought they heard something moving overhead, but nothing could be seen above the concealing smoke.
Then a strong breeze is felt! But this wind seems to coming from overhead! The wind is blowing downward, causing the smoke to fan out from the caravan. In a matter of moments, the scouts loose sight of each other. Many are choking on the smoke and its unpleasant smell. Now it is heard more clearly. The flapping of wings! There is something flying over the battlefield, but its lost in the smoke filled sky.
The smoke approaches the rest of the group as they ride closer. It's already starting to cover the first riders and just seems to be getting worse. Those with really good hearing note the flapping over large wings overhead.

Shortly after they start riding south toward the main road, Kaylessa glides out of the fading twilight. She pauses to catch her breath, then announces that a group of their foes' females are attacking the hobgoblins' caravan. Definitely the last thing he expected to hear!
Lucyus agrees that the squad will follow her toward the battle. Thinking about the elf's request that they move quietly, Vardra poses a question: "Should we dismount at some point as we get closer?"
Further down the road, they start to notice the area becoming smokier. Vardra does his best to cover the sound as he begins coughing. The smoke continues to get worse as they approach the fires and sounds of combat.
The sound of large wings flapping is soon heard from overhead. Vardra recalls seeing a large creature flying over the fort a couple days ago and wonders if this is the same beast. He cranes his neck to look up, hoping to get a glimpse of the creature though the haze.

Butternut:
The drow mage and her goblin friend Zam move out of sight as the fighting continues. As the fire reaches the barrels of that horrid goblin beverage, the smoke and stench get worse, causing Butternut to hold her nose.
The wind suddenly shifts to coming from above and the flapping of wings can be heard! Some kind of flying creature must be above the battle and fanning the smoke downward into the combatants. It's becoming difficult to breathe, and Butternut starts to cough.
Looking over at Vernar, Butternut manages to choke out a question. "You want me to see if the women want some help? Being female, they may not attack me immediately. Either way, we're gonna need to do something about whatever that is." She punctuates the last statement by jabbing a finger upwards toward the sound of the wings.

Vernar -
Smoke starts to swirl across the battlefield, making the air nearly unbreathable. It seems to be stirred up from something above them, but Vernar cannot see well enough to make anything out. Moving back a bit while trying not to cough, Vernar finally spots Butternut's form in the dense smoke.
If things don't clear up in the next few moments, Vernar will signal to Butternut and Ren to start making their way back towards the road. If the beast, or whatever is responsible, leaves or lands and the smoke starts clearing, Vernar will stay put and see what develops, including possibly letting Butternut venture up further if she remains confident about slipping in among the women combatants.

With the smoke and flapping wings, Butternut accepts Vernar's recommendation and waits on trying to contact the female warriors. Instead, she back away from the sound of the wings, hoping to find a spot where the smoke is less dense. She keeps her crossbow at the ready, in case she gets a decent shot at the winged creature overhead.

The source of the fire that the squad saw from the caravan that they attacked was a different caravan being attacked by what appears to be a group of female goblins, ogres, hobgoblins and even a drow! Smoke from the fire becomes thicker and thicker making it hard to see. Even worse, something is flying overhead and the beat of its wings is driving the smoke down and outwards from the burning caravan.
From their position hidden near the fighting, the scouts find the smoke getting worse. Its starting to thicken and limit just how far they can see. The smell is most unpleasant and you have fight back against choking. Vernar gives the order to withdraw back to the road and the scouts pull back.
A loud noise draws their attention back towards the caravan. The flying creature soars in and breathes some sort of gas! The gas combines with the thick smoke limiting sight to only a handful of feet. The screams of many dying creatures are heard as well. You have no idea it friends or foes are falling!
A bit further back, Kaylessa leads the rest of the squad mounted on their horses towards the scouts. The riders can see visibility getting much worse as they approach. The flying creature remains overhead, concealed by the smoke.
Suddenly many cries of those dying reach the ears of the riders! Something is happening up ahead. As the smoke surges towards the riders, the forms of the scouts can been seen as they are moving closer.
And then it happens. The flying creature is heard hovering overhead! It's wings beat rapidly and the smoke in the immediate area clears enough to see just what this beast is. It's a gigantic forest green lizard of some kind! The mere sight of the flying creature triggers fear the likes of which none of you have ever felt before. All the members of the squad run or ride off in random directions and are lost in the smoke and the darkness.
Eventually, the dragon fear fades and you can control yourself once more. You have no idea just how long you ran or rode or even in what direction you went. The smoke has thinned out or is now completely gone. You are now all alone in this forest with enemy forces about and a green dragon flying overhead!

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
Kaylessa leading on foot, the squad rides toward the fires in search of the scouts. Smoke from the fires blankets the area, seeming to get thicker with every stride. They can hear the flapping of a great beast's wings, and Kaylessa warns that they are not alone as she looks pointedly toward the sky.
A minute passes, and Vardra can just make out shapes moving toward them through the smoke. They seem smallish, but he's unsure whether these are the scouts or potential foes. Apparently also seeing the approaching figures, Lucyus calls out for the squad to dismount. Even as he does so, the flying creature moves closer and the smoke parts just enough to make out the form of an enormous green dragon framed against the darkening late evening sky!
Waves of fear wash over the soldier, rational thought burned away by a tsunami of terror. As bad as it is for him, his mount seems affected even worse. Forelock emits a screeching sound no horse should ever make, spins, and races off at full speed through the darkened forest. Not being a trained rider, it is all Vardra can do to hang on.
It is some time before Vardra recovers his wits, and even longer before he can bring the horse to a stop. Miraculously, Forelock didn't run into any trees or stumble and fall due to the uneven ground - despite the encroaching night. Looking around, the soldier realizes that he has no idea where he is. There is nothing but a sea of trees in any direction, and his jumbled memories don't recall crossing any roads.
Taking a deep breath, the soldier finally has a chance to follow Lucyus' last order and dismounts. He quickly checks Forelock for any injuries, but only finds a few scratches, probably from branches broken off during their wild flight. "Thank the gods," he says softly, knowing it could be so much worse. Fortunately, most of his gear is still in the saddlebags and his backpack, so he just needs to figure out what to do.
Looking around, he sees a small spot that should make a good camp for the night. During survival training, they had taught that when lost, it was best to secure your situation first. Since it is nighttime, spending the night here seems like the best option. In the morning, perhaps he can follow Forelock's path back toward where this all started.
Vardra feeds Forelock from his bags, then sets up camp, pitching his tent and building a small fire to cook himself a dinner. His helmet serves well enough as a makeshift water bowl for the horse. After eating, the fire provides enough light that he is able to examine Forelock more closely and put some salve from his bag on her cuts. Afterwards, he douses the fire, says a quick prayer to whichever gods might happen to be listening, then settles in to sleep.

As they back away, the smoke continues to thicken until she can barely make out Vernar, no more than a dozen paces away. Breathing is becoming a challenge too, and she holds a fold of her cloak over her nose and mouth in an attempt to filter out the worst of it. Hearing Vernar call for a retreat, she turns and strides in the opposite direction from the fires, still dimly seen through the choking haze.
A noise grabs her attention and she pivots in time to see a flying reptile breath some kind of gas down toward the center of the battle. The night air is filled with the screams of the dying, and Butternut turns away to continue the trudging retreat.
After a little ways, it seems like the smoke is getting slightly thinner. The halfling naturalist can hear the sound of hooves ahead and adjusts her course to move in that direction. Butternut hopes that it is the rest of Wyvern Squad, but cannot be certain. "Kaylessa?" she calls softly in Elvish.
Hearing the sound of wings draw much closer than before, Butternut spins to see what can only be a green dragon silhouetted against the moon. "There you are, you scaly --" she says as she raises her crossbow. She gets no further before her eyes bug out and her limbs turn to limp noodles. Terror rains down into her mind and body, making it even harder to breathe than in the worst of the smoke.
Butternut's brain can only process one thought, "Flee!" and so she does, her short legs pumping away like pistons as she plows through the underbrush. Instinctively, she navigates a relatively safe path, her training keeping her just functional enough to not spit herself on a branch, trip on a root, or fall into a ravine.
Eventually, exhaustion forces her to stop and Butternut collapses to her knees. The air is somewhat clearer, and her lungs labor to pull in enough oxygen. It takes some minutes, but her breathing eventually returns to normal. Looking around, she can see that she is near the edge of a small clearing. Based on her recollection and trained sense of direction, she thinks that she was moving west or southwest, but really isn't certain.
Thinking back, Vernar and Ren were closest before fear took her. Perhaps they are still nearby. Pressing herself into a hollowed tree trunk, Butternut whispers loudly. "Vernar? Ren? You there?" She pauses for a couple of minutes before trying again, a bit louder. A third time, this time at normal speaking volume; she's not willing to make any more noise than that.
As she waits for a response, she considers her situation and prepares to fight for her life - if it comes to that. It occurred to her earlier in the day that her protective Armor spell had worn off. She'll have to fix that come morning. In the silence of falling night, she can hear the trickling of a small stream and the occasional croak of a frog; at least there is water nearby.

I'll stop there to see if there is any response, good or bad. If not, I'll continue in another post.

Vernar -
The whole situation just keeps getting worse. No longer able to keep an eye on the enemy, or even where the enemy is with all of the smoke, Vernar motions to everyone to get clear and start making their way back. He tries not to cough, but fails, winching with each sound for fear of some enemy or other finding out he is lurking about. He spots Butternut pulling back, and thinks he sees Ren through the smoke before it begins to swirl around him. At least they understood, he thinks, and then suddenly nothing else makes much sense.
The next thing the dwarf knows is he is running. He stumbles through some brambles and ungracefully rolls down a slight embankment. Finding his feet again he runs and runs, until he no longer knows why he was running. Used to traveling on foot for long distances, combined with his dwarven fortitude, Vernar's breathing is quite controlled as he stops and looks around. He has no idea where he is at the moment, but he does not hear screams or the beating of wings. Running his fingers through his tangled beard to pick out a few sticks and leaves he accumulated, he looks around once more. The darkness does not help things either.
Finally, he finds an old stump long devoured by weather and termites, and sets his back against it. He munches on some rations and washes everything down with some lukewarm water. Placing his axe across his lap, he takes one last look around before settling in to try to get some sleep. He will try to make sense of where he is and where he needs to go in the morning.

Instinctively, Vernar turns away, pulling his cloak up to cover his mouth and nose. His eyes begin to water as he starts stumbling back through the light brush. He trips and falls, his eyes going skyward, as the massive shape, barely a shadow seen through the smoke, passes overhead. He can make out wings, and scales, and a massive eye looking about. The eye!A loud noise draws their attention back towards the caravan. The flying creature soars in and breathes some sort of gas! The gas combines with the thick smoke limiting sight to only a handful of feet. The screams of many dying creatures are heard as well. You have no idea if friends or foes are falling!

Post Continued:
April 16th, CR 569
The sight of a green dragon has installed dragon fear into the members of the squad, sending them all running or riding off in blind terror in random directions. Finally, the terror subsides and each stops to catch their breath and take stock of their situation.
Vardra:
After the terror fades, Vardra finds himself alone in the forest. Nothing looks familiar and with the darkness his vision is greatly limited. His training takes over and Vardra sets up camp for the evening. His mount is tended too and he starts a fire to cook with. As Vardra eats, he suddenly hears what might be a twig snapping not too far away from his camp. Something is out there!
Butternut:
Butternut comes to a stop in a small clearing in the forest. She calls out for the other scouts, but there is no response. Looking around, Butternut can spot a faint light far off back to her right. Could it be the burning caravan she was just scouting?
Moving is first heard and then a voice follows from close by. Whoever it is, they are not skilled in moving silently through the forest. They are also unaware that Butternut is in the area.
“Janice!” the voice cries out as much as it dares. The speaker does sound female. “Where are you? I'm scared!”
Vernar:
Elsewhere, Vernar comes to a stop after his flight of terror. The forested area he finds himself is slightly sloped, going down in the direction he had been going in. Locating a stump from a fallen tree, Vernar settles in for a drink of water and some food while contemplating his next move.
Several noises are heard off to his right. There are beings moving past Vernar not very far away. He quickly realizes that they are goblins as he can understand their language. The goblins, there are at least three of them based on the speakers. They are complaining about the assignment that they have been given. It seems that they were sent out to find out what happened to a caravan that they were expecting. The goblins don't like being out and exposed like this.
Now what?

Lucyus
Seeing the beast fly overhead, Lucyus turns his mount as the terror and fear of the dragon runs through his veins. “ Hold on, Wimzy!” he says as he kicks his heels into the horse, but it needs no proding.
Lucyus barely holds on as the steed pouches it’self in sheer terror. He tries to slow the horse down but to no avail as tree limbs and brush rattle off his armor.
Within time the fear dissipates and Lucyus is able to get control of his mount. “Woah! Steady.” he calls out as he slowly brings his mount about looking back the way they came. Dismounting he looks to Wimzy, “I don’t think we should light a fire. There is no telling what is out there tonight. Are you ok?” heling the cleric down from the mount.

Kaylessa
Seeing it, all rational thought is lost as she is frighten to her core. She takes off running as she tries to look back at the beast she clips a tree and spins to the ground as he bow and quiver go awry. Scrabbling forward, Kaylessa does not hold back nor dares to look, her elfin feet carrying her away.
The fear fades and Kaylessa leans over looking back at the way she came. As he breaths lowly steadies, she stand up to full height and straightens her bow and quiver. And it is then she realizes. She is alone in the dark with god knows what about her. She looks about herself as she lowers herself to the ground in a crouch.
Resisting the urge to call out, Kaylessa looks about trying to see if there are any landmark she recognizes in the growing smoke and darkness. She will slowly make her way back the way she came, retracing her steps. Perhaps it’s gone? She tells herself as she steels herself stepping forward.
(Quietly move forward, trying to be aware of her surroundings.”
A smile comes to her face seeing the forms of the scouts coming forward through the growing darkness and smoke, but then wings are heard above. Her elfin eyes go wide in shock and terror she lays eyes on a green dragon.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:
In the deepening darkness of nightfall, Vardra sets to making camp: pitching his tent, building a small fire, caring for his horse, and getting them both fed and watered. The evening goes well, all things considered. Being lost and alone in the wilderness is a new experience for him; fortunately, his commanders provided good training in basic survival.
After eating, the soldier finds himself relaxing by the fire before going to bed. Suddenly, his reverie is interrupted by a sound in the darkness. 'Did a twig just snap?' he wonders to himself. Alarmed, he draws his sword and backs away from the fire, trying to keep it between him and the source of the noise. "Who's there?!" he calls softly, hoping it's one of his friends though it could just as easily be a wild animal of some sort. Or one -- or more -- of the hobgoblins from the caravan...
Vardra prepares himself mentally to fight for his life in the glow from the fire.

Butternut:
Minutes tick by as Butternut waits. No response. She hadn't really expected to find one of her companions nearby, but it had seemed like the best first option. Time to figure out her next step.
Extracting herself from the burnt-out stump, Butternut takes a good look around. She can just make out a source of light far off, though she's not certain of the direction. She could head there and check it out, though spending the night here might be safer. 'Tough choice,' she thinks.
Before she comes to a decision, the halfling naturalist hears movement nearby and quickly crouches down behind a nearby bush. Whoever they are, it's not hard to hear them as they blunder through the woods. Then she hears a female voice call out. It doesn't sound like anyone from Wyvern Squad; perhaps it's one of the females that attacked the caravan...
Thinking fast, Butternut makes a fateful decision. "This way," she calls back softly and waits with sword and dagger at the ready in case this is a setup and things turn nasty.

Vernar -
Vernar will not move, listening to the conversing goblins. He is thankful that he spent some time learning their language, as he is able to put together the dislike of their task easily enough. Once he is confident they have moved a bit past his position, Vernar will quietly get up and follow them silently. He will try to determine exactly how many goblins there are and figure out if they are traveling together in a tight group or if there are stragglers. He will keep his hand on his weapons, but they will remain sheathed so as not to give away his position from any glittering metal.Several noises are heard off to his right.
