Operation: Graystone #28

April 16th, CR 569

Thanks to the aerial scouting of Flare's avian companion, the group knows that another caravan is moving down the main road from the direction of Gateway. Is it going to the goblin lair to resupply or is it heading directly towards the army of creatures attacking Fort Graystone? Only time will tell its destination.

Real food has been acquired and Sorvani and those helping him set out to make something edible out of it. The day long rain finally lets up as the meal is being prepared. The venison and rabbit meat is cooked over the open fire on long skewers as are the potatoes, onions and mushrooms. Its not the greatest meal, but it is far superior than iron rations. Fresh fruit is available to be had as well.

The sky is mostly clear after the meal has been consumed. Best guess would put nightfall two hours away. It is decided to act upon the information supplied by M'Lady and intercept the caravan coming down the main road. Gear is gathered up and the horses made ready to ride.

The scouts lead the way down the hillside and into the forest below. Its bright enough that you can ride at full speed without hindrance. The scouts do ride a bit further ahead of the main group. The scouts slow their pace and come to a stop. Based on past experience, you are close to where the road that leads back to the main road is at.

The scouts are alerted to something being up ahead of them as what is up there is making no attempt to be quiet. Around the bend in the road, at the intersection where the path travels in three directions, a caravan is spotted! It is moving from the trail leading back to the main road and turning onto the path that heads towards the goblins lair!

The wagons are being pulled by ogres and once more hobgoblins are acting as drivers and guards. The caravan is moving at a good clip, seemingly faster than the speed your horses could maintain while pulling the wagons the day before. The wagons that can be seen are of the smaller variety, pulled by one ogre variety.

GM Notes:

Here is the map for what you can see:
graystone055.jpg
graystone055.jpg (92.29 KiB) Viewed 11019 times
Like before, the sand color is the road. The group is at the far end of the left hand portion of the road. The caravan is coming up the road from the bottom of the map and turning to the right. The red is the wagons that can be seen. The dark brown circles are tree trunks in the area with the green being what the trees cover. The wagons that can be seen are the smaller ones, those lacking the archery platform. There are no additional enemies seen beyond the ogres pulling and the hobgoblin drivers.

I goofed a little bit on just how close nightfall was in the previous post. I had figured the hunters had returned around 5 pm and darkness was around 6. But after looking up the sunrise/sunset numbers for the game time of year, nightfall is around 8. So that gives you a few more hours of daylight to make use of. After traveling, the time is around 7 pm, so you have an hour of daylight left.

Wimzy also memorized a Light spell for today.

I'm in the process of relocating the Campaign History section of the forum to the website. The recap for this game has already been moved there.

It can be found here:

That covers the first 12 posts of the game. More will be added as time goes on. Right now the area is very bare bones.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

More on the moral discussion -
"And Lucyus, you speak of not wanting to kill them, but imply that it would be satisfactory should they meet the Stone Golem once more. How is such moral justification any better, any less dishonorable, than the direct alternative? I am not saying that this is not a moral quandary. But I also do not believe it is as black and white as some of you are making it out to be. Our actions and inactions will have results and implications whether we witness the results of those actions and inactions directly or not."

“As you point out, Control is an illusion. One can not control everything, only oneself. If they are sent to their ways and ill will befall them, then so be it. I did everything I could within reason to honor my word, so my heart is clear,” he says evenly to the priestess.

"Very interesting rationalization," she responds quietly. The priestess put up her hands. "If that is the justification that is needed, so be it." Certainly she would not have suggested the culling of the entire tribe if they were humans or dwarves or any other reasonable humanoid. There were more important issues remaining regarding the enemy in the area.
----------------------------------------------

The group readies themselves after a reasonable meal. The priestess is happy to partake of some normal food and once more thanks the hunters and the cooks for their efforts. Fortunately the rain ends as well. After a day spent in the consistent drizzle, everyone is rather damp and wet. A break in the rain gives them a bit more light as well. The scouts think we may be able to intercept the caravan before nightfall now, rather than trying to strike at dawn or in the dark of evening.

Erisciana will swap her clothing for her dry set and quickly don her armor. Mounting up on her trusty blue roan, she is ready to leave as the group heads out to the intersection and another conflict with the enemy.

As before, when the scouts slow and stop their advance, Erisciana commands the rest of the group travelling further behind the lead to divert into the woods to the left of the road. The enemy caravan can plainly be heard now as there is no effort to quell their noise. The wagon wheels clatter on the dirt road and the hobgoblins chatter makes it obvious what has caused the scouts to stop.

The priestess will call over Gerett and Lucyus. "We do not have time for a war council, yet again," she says with a frown. "The enemy is here and we must strike if we are going to do so. Vernar's group will decide the initial combat method and time, but we must be ready to support them immediately. We will break into the same groups we did last time," she says nodding to the other two. "Gerrett, you go across to the right hand side of the road. Lucyus, our group will advance along the left. We want to lead with Sleep spells on the hobgoblins when the attack begins. Both groups should advance through and clear the woods to either side to make sure that the enemy do not have their own scouts protecting the movement of the caravan. Do not advance past our scouts and await their signal to attack. Ideally we split the caravan in two with our initial attacks and work towards eliminating the lead half as priority. Flare's bird said there were many more beings this time. We should expect a more difficult combat, but we are also at full strength and not coming off an earlier battle as before."

Vernar -
Laurel will sidle over to the small group and pipe up, "I'd like to listen in if a lesson is being given... I'm pretty good with picking up languages."

Butternut looks up and gives the quiet priestess a ragged smile. "Sure, join us. If you're good with languages, perhaps soon you'll be helping me try to teach this hard-headed dwarf," she says with a smirk and a flick of her hand in Vernar's direction.
"Ah, that she may," Vernar says with the slightest hint of a chuckle. "More likely she be calmin' you down when you find out just how horrible a student I be," he says to Butternut.
Taking a bit of the fresh fruit, Kaylessa looks to the dwarf. “Perhaps, I should wrap a few arrow tips to hold a flame for a time? How many yards do you want us apart? It is possible they may have their own scouts out this night.”
"That be a good idea," Vernar replies approvingly about the arrow idea. "I say we stay within twenty yards o' each other so as not t' be losin' sight but also not fall victim t' any traps meant t' take us all out."

The ride is swift as there is still more daylight to be had. Vernar is thankful to have spent the time learning to ride when the pace was less urgent, otherwise he would be hard pressed to remain in a saddle now. Soon enough they reach the road, and a short time later, the sound of wagon wheels reaches their ears. Pulling off the road and dismounting, Vernar moves up, signaling the others to remain fanned out.

Vernar curses under his breath as they don't have the luxury of setting up a proper ambush. He ponders why they are heading to the goblin's lair, but it really doesn't make difference. If they strike quick enough, they may be able to rout the caravan before the goblins wake from their daytime slumber or are otherwise more prepared.

Deciding quickly, knowing the rest of the group behind them are going to act once it is clear that combat is engaged, Vernar motions to Ren and Kaylessa to go on the left side of the road (top of the map). Using a combination of whispers and hand signals, he indicates they should try to hurl alchemical fire and use flaming arrows on the wagons to sow confusion and halt the leading wagons with the range of Kaylessa's bow.

Turning to Butternut as he indicates her to follow him onto the right side of the road (bottom of the map), he flashes her a toothy grin, "Shall we get up close an' personal?" Hopefully Kaylessa and Ren can stop the caravan at some point towards the front, leaving the back of the train to slow or stop. Vernar wants to hit the very last wagon if it is not too far back. This will allow Erisciana's main group to slam into the middle of the caravan with spells, blades, and arrows, thereby hitting the hobgoblins from three different attack vectors.

Once more they found themselves on the move, ready to intercept another caravan before it reached Greystone. At least we know what we're about, he thought to himself. Monotony had never bothered him, not that battle could ever really get monotonous. They knew more about their capabilities now, and were practiced in fighting these goblins and their "ogres of burden". He wasn't ready to get overconfident yet, but certainly they would be approaching this second caravan ambush with the advantage of having already won a similar fight before.

As Erisciana gave the orders, he nodded to those in his detachment from the day before. Together they slipped off the road to the right side. Gerett kept his own eyes in the woods, on the lookout for a goblin vanguard. He would wait for the spellcasters to initiate the fight before firing his crossbow into the mix. With simple hand signals he motioned for Vardra to do the same: when the battle broke out, they would fire into the enemy to cause confusion, only moving into melee if they needed to intercept a group of enemies moving towards vulnerable members in their group, such as spellcasters or dedicated archers.

"That be a good idea," Vernar replies approvingly about the arrow idea. "I say we stay within twenty yards o' each other so as not t' be losin' sight but also not fall victim t' any traps meant t' take us all out."
Kaylessa nods in agreement and begins to do so then gathers her gear. And follows the other scouts out to the horses. Giving her mount a little attention before mounting up, Kaylessa is ready to head out.
Soon enough they reach the road, and a short time later, the sound of wagon wheels reaches their ears. Pulling off the road and dismounting, Vernar moves up, signaling the others to remain fanned out.
Seeing Vernar’s signal, she ushers her mount into the trees and dismounts, She moves as Vernar asked as she hears the wagon wheels about. Kaylessa will be mindful of enemy scouts and if seen she will see to them with bow in hand.
She sees the call to use the Alchemists fire and she wonders if she could throw a container that far without exposing herself. Looking to ren, She signs that she is going to cast sleep on the furtherest lead wagon that is within range. Hoping that it will delay them and cause a jam in the caravan

Lucyus
Cutting off a hunk of venison with his dagger, Lucyus begins eats the warm meat, it’s juices running down his fingers and some getting caught in his facial hair. “Oh that is good.” He exclaims as he wipes his face and beard of remnants. “It beats iron rations anyday”as he picks up a potato skewer and adds that to his meal.
Having eaten somewhat well, Lucyus than gathers up his gear and takes a spear from the armory. It takes him a bit of time to put on his platemail but thankfully he is getting used to taking it on and off.
The priestess will call over Gerett and Lucyus. "We do not have time for a war council, yet again," she says with a frown. "The enemy is here and we must strike if we are going to do so. Vernar's group will decide the initial combat method and time, but we must be ready to support them immediately. “Let us begin then!” he says as he is thankful for the light of day.
Lucyus will cast Bless before the group seperates, “Luck in Battle.”he will say to the others then move off to his flank. He will wait for the signal and begin battle by throwing his spear at the closest enemy before moving in with battle-ax and shield.

Butternut:

While not a skilled cook, Butternut's training in hunting and survival included some basic food preparation so she gives Sorvani a hand as best she can. She mostly focuses on the meat, since that's what she has the most experience with. Once a fire is built, the halfling ranger applies her skill to grilling and pan-frying what they collected.
Vernar wrote:"Ah, that she may," Vernar says with the slightest hint of a chuckle. "More likely she be calmin' you down when you find out just how horrible a student I be," he says to Butternut.
After the meal, Vernar brings up the subject of learning Goblinish and agrees to teach trap-setting in exchange. The cat priestess, Laurel, asks to learn the language as well. The dwarf's comment elicits a guffaw from Butternut. "As a priestess, yours may be just one more life she saves."

After gathering her things and saddling Zephyr, Butternut is happy to head out with the scouts. The woods are comforting and familiar, and the thought of killing more overgrown goblinoids brings a smile to her face. Vernar recommends that the scouts keep a moderate separation, to which Butternut responds with a nod. As usual, she stays near the front so sounds and trail sign won't be obscured by others.

As they approach the fork leading to the underground fort and the main road, noises up ahead bring them up short. Carefully looking through the trees, they can see that the wagon train is turning in the direction of the goblin lair. All of the wagons appear to be the smaller type from before. From the pace they're moving at, Butternut suspects that the wagons are empty. More concerning, she doesn't see the number of guards that M'Lady had reported...

Butternut dismounts and quickly finds a good spot to leave Zephyr well out of view of the road.

Vernar sends Ren and Kaylessa up the left side of the road with instructions to attack the lead wagon, then turns to her. His question brings a wicked grin to her features at the thought of slicing up hobgobs. "Sounds like fun, but where are all those troops Flare's bird reported?"

Erisciana wrote:"Hmmm, of that I think unlikely. The Queen of Heavens certainly commands the divine sphere of War. However other deities would have access to such as well, as I understand. But the tertiary magnitude of spells is not quickly granted to a follower. It is said that the first two magnitudes are a function of our belief in our god or goddess. Our study and immersion in the devotions allow a loyal follower access to divine benefits, including healing, but these are simple, rudimentary blessings in general. The tertiary magnitude is the first step to truly connecting with one's godhead," she says as she raises her hand to the sky. "This morning I was visited during my orison by a spiritual disciple of the goddess. It was quite exciting and awe inspiring," she says with a blushing smile.
"That must have been quite an experience," Vardra replies. Though he has always been faithful in his beliefs and devotion to the gods, he wasn't drawn to the priesthood. He's never been certain why, other than perhaps his family's long decades of military service.

Eating real food is a distinct pleasure after living on mostly iron rations for so long. Vardra makes time to thank the hunters and cooks for providing this fine meal.

After eating and donning his armor, Vardra goes to the makeshift stable to collect Forelock. "Time for another ride, my friend." He offers the horse a few apple chunks as he puts on the bridle and saddle. One last check of his armor and weapons, as well as verifying tht he has a few torches and bottles of oil with him, and then the soldier mounts up.

The ride down the hill goes quickly in the early evening light. As they approach the fork that leads to the goblin-infested outpost, a signal from the scouts causes everyone to pull off the road and tie up their mounts. Vardra gives Forelock an affectionate pat before seeking out Gerett.

The dwarf leads them into the woods on the right-hand side, which seems to be the direction the wagons are coming from. Lucyus and those with him take the left-hand side. The scouts have already disappeared into the underbrush.

Vardra nods his understanding when Gerett signals that they should start the attack with ranged weapons as soon as the spell-casters unleash their magic. He makes his way through the woods as quietly as he can until he finds a good spot to shoot from.

Post Continued:

The combined squads ride to intercept an enemy caravan. They find it moving off the road going back to Graystone Pass and turning onto the path that leads to the goblin lair. This new caravan is moving faster than expected, leading Butternut to believe that it is empty.

The scouts fan out, Ren and Kaylessa to the left/upper side of the road, while Vernar and Butternut advance down the right/bottom area. Behind them, the rest of the group dismounts and advances through the woods taking cover behind the trees and growth. Lucyus leads the group along the left side of the road, while Gerett is on the right.

As the scouts get closer, they get a better look at what they are dealing with. The wagons they initially saw, those pulled by only one ogre are the middle of the caravan. There are three larger wagons with archery platforms before them and three more behind! No hobgoblins are noted walking; they are all riding in the wagons.

GM Notes:

Here is then updated combat map. The map is too large for the forum, so I put it on the website.

Here is the correct link.

All the enemy forces are identified so pick your targets. As before the map is 1 square = 5 feet. The group is labeled as before as are the enemy. W is the wagon number and O is ogres. The first 2 hobgoblins of any wagon are the drivers, the last 2 are the archers for those wagons with 4 hobgoblins on them. If they are only 2, then they are the drivers for the smaller wagons.

The players were placed from best guess based on what was posted and what cover there was. There is more growth under the trees than shown, bushes and what not. Unlike the earlier battle, there is not the abundance of rocks and boulders along the side of the road. The whole area is fairly level.

Now what?

Butternut:

Peeking around the large maple's trunk, Butternut observes the caravan rolling by. Now that she's close, she can see that this wagon train is about the same size as the other and they have arrived just as the middle wagons are passing.

Glancing over at Vernar, she jerks her head to the right and whispers, "Last wagon's back there." She points at the large oak further to their right. "We should come in from there. A Sleep spell will cover our approach."

Fitting her actions to her words, the halfling hunter glides quietly through the woods towards the giant tree, watching for enemy scouts in the woods or troops following the caravan as she goes. As she nears the huge tree trunk, she prepares to cast the spell over the last two wagons.

________________________________________________________________________
Half-move to the big tree trunk to the left of the last wagon. Assuming that no enemy scouts or troops are encountered, cast the spell to catch as many of the hobgoblins on wagons 8 & 9 as possible. If scouts, focus on taking them down quickly and quietly. If troops and no scouts, cast the spell on the troops.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

Following somewhat behind the others, Vardra and Sorvani make their way forward to a small tree just off the trail. From here, they have a good view of the back half of the supply convoy. The soldier can see Gerett and Sann near another tree almost directly between them and the middle wagon. A brief flicker of movement is spotted further up, which he suspects is one of the scouts.

Not liking his current position, Vardra speaks softly and tells the warrior-mage his plan. "This will come to melee; I can feel it. I'm moving up to that tree over there so I can support the others." As he says this, he points with the arrow nocked to his bowstring at the small tree off to Sann's right.

Moving as quietly as he can through the woods toward the indicated tree, Vardra watches the wagons lumbering by and reviews the available targets in his mind. His first priority is the wagon drivers so that they cannot release the harnessed ogres.

________________________________________________________________________
Heading for the small tree 4 squares directly below where Butternut and Vernar are marked. He will begin shooting once the spell-casters or scouts have started the fight.

Vernar -
Glancing over at Vernar, she jerks her head to the right and whispers, "Last wagon's back there." She points at the large oak further to their right. "We should come in from there. A Sleep spell will cover our approach."
Vernar nods and sets his focus to the task at hand. Following Butternut, he remains alert to make sure neither he nor the halfling are ambushed by any hobgoblins that might be lingering in the woods. Should the way be clear, he will wait until her spell goes off before acting.

_________________________________________________________________
Vernar's goal is to cripple either ogre #12 or #14 if Butternut's spell takes all of the hobgoblins out on those two wagons. He will try to either backstab one of those ogres with his enchanted sword for maximum damage, or if their speed is too fast for him to get into such a position, throw his axe and one dagger to stay out of melee as they are harnessed. Since two ogres are hooked to these wagons, one ogre should not be able to keep pulling the wagon in theory, or at least at a greatly reduced speed.

If Butternut's spell does not put down all of the hobgoblins, he will instead hurl his axe and a dagger at one of the remaining active hobgoblins on one of those two wagons, prioritizing drivers over archers.

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

Varda had asked some questions about the Fortification spell that Erisciana had cast for defending the approach to Eagle's Nest. She explained that it was a new level of spell power that had been granted to her this very morning, which included a spectral visit from some exemplar of her diety.

"That must have been quite an experience," Vardra replies. Though he has always been faithful in his beliefs and devotion to the gods, he wasn't drawn to the priesthood. He's never been certain why, other than perhaps his family's long decades of military service.

"Indeed it was!" She responds enthusiastically. "It was inspiring and amazing, but peaceful at the same time. Very difficult emotion to properly descibe."
----------------------------------------------

The group halts as a caravan looms ahead of them, moving from the main road toward the goblin encampment. Erisciana is surprised that they have contacted the wagons so quickly. Based on what the bird said, it should not be here for several hours more.

The main group is directed into the woods, once she sees the scouts deploy into the trees. She decides to give the same breakdown of groups that they had for the first caravan assault. Hopefully everyone follows similar tactics so that they win this fight as easily as the last one, she thinks as Gerett heads off with his sub-group. The others move quickly across the road and advance, waiting for the scouts' signal to attack.

As the group on the left moves up, consisting of herself, Lucyus, Flare, Kendall and Laurel, they get within range and see two of the scouts split to their side, Ren and Kaylessa. The scouts moved up close enough to the moving caravan to strike. "Strange," the priestess mouthed almost silently, as her eyes narrowed, concern showing on her lovely features. "The bird said that there were 'many more' enemy with the wagons and here there are none," she thought for a moment as she moved closer to a large tree trunk for cover.

The priestess will move over to Lucyus and Kendall's tree. "Remember the lessons of the first ambush. Destroy the enemy on one wagon before moving on. Let us cut off the head of the wagon train."

Erisci then moves over to the tree where Flare is setting up. Here she is in range to hit the second wagon past the y-intersection (W3). "Strike at the hobgoblins ahead of our attacks as best you can, just like the other day," she will say to the ranger. "May your aim be true and your arrows strike well." She places her hand briefly on the man's shoulder and smiles as he glances her way briefly.

Waiting for the signal to attack, presumably from Ren and some others launching alchemical grenades, Erisci glances briefly at the surrounding area. Still no sign of support guards that the bird had mentioned. She begins to wonder if this is the same caravan that the bird saw. Regardless they need to destroy it, certainly. And quickly, if another was not far off. And larger. Once the grenade goes off, Erisci will cast a Sleep spell to cover Wagons 3 and 4 if W5 is the grenade target or wagons 5 and 6 if W4 is hit by flames.

Kaylessa

Seeing that the wagons are returning they do not bare the weight and are a lot faster then the previous caravan. Seeing this Kaylessa intends to slow them down a bit.
She looks back at Ren and signals that she will put the furthest front most wagon to sleep or at least hopefully.
Moving forward to the large tree( 5 tiles), Kaylessa will then cast Sleep upon the front most wagon, then proceed to use her bow.

Lucyus watches as the scouts move forward. As he waits the priestess notes the numbers are not the same or perhaps Flare’s bird was intoxicated like it’s owner. The Paladin Cleric looks back and whispers to her, “There is a chance we may get surrounded if their numbers are what the bird says.”
Lucyus unstraps his axe from his back making it easier to draw, his shield stays in his left hand and he grips the shaft of his spear with the right.
Lucyus will move up to Ren’s current position and once the signal is given he will launch his spear at the closest target then move in with his battleaxe and shield.

April 16th, CR 569

The squad move to attack the new caravan making it way towards the goblin lair. Everyone holds their breath and waits for Ren to start the show. The gnome gets close enough to toss a lit container of Alchemists Fire at Wagon #5. The fiery liquid explodes on the drivers, killing them instantly. The ogre is being burned alive and screams in agony. Lucyus throws his spear at the screaming ogre, putting it out of its misery.

Kaylessa casts sleep at the very first wagon. She can see the archers on top drop to the deck, but cannot see the drivers from her position. This wagon continues to advance forward.

Flare fires a pair of arrows at the archers on top of wagon #2. Both shafts hit and both hobgoblins drop out of sight.

Erisciana casts Sleep in the area between wagons #3 and 4. The archers on top of wagon 3 fall over. The priestess can see the two drivers on her side of the wagon have slumped over.

Seeming out of nowhere, Kendell charges into view yelling like a fool as he goes. The armored warrior rushes up and drives his longsword twice into Ogre #9, slaying it. The hobgoblins drivers of wagon #6 are stunned to see this.

Gerett and Sann rush to assist Kendell. Gerett fires his crossbow, but misses hobgoblin #17. Sann forgoes his ranged attacks and charges up beside Kendell. He slays hobgoblin #17. Hobgoblin #18 tries to stab Kendell with his sword, but misses.
Sorvani and Vardra advance forward as well. Sorvani casts his own Sleep spell and in response all the hobgoblins around wagon #7 fall asleep. Vardra fires a pair of arrows and kills hobgoblin #23.

Butternut also casts Sleep and all the hobgoblins on wagon #9 fall asleep. One of the archers on top of wagon #8 drops out of sight as well.

Seeing that not all the hobgoblins fell asleep, Vernar throws his axe and dagger at hobgoblin #24, killing it. The hobgoblin next to it fires an arrow at Vernar, but misses.

The enemy tries to gather its wits and fight back. Hobgoblins #7 and 8 pop back up after both being shot by Flare and fire arrows at Kaylessa, hitting the elf.

The very first wagon keeps on moving. The driver on the right hand side falls off the wagon and hits the ground hard and is not moving. The drivers of wagon #2 try to get the ogres to move faster, but find themselves stuck behind the slower moving wagon #1. Wagons #3 and #4 keep moving forward as well.

Wagon #5 is on fire and the ogre pulling wagon #6 was killed, bringing it to a halt. The wagons behind them try to keep moving but are starting to bunch up behind those wagons that have stopped.

Further off in the woods, Laurel and Wimzy come a bit closer, but are keeping their distance.

Erisciana, priestess of Ishtar -

The attack begins and the chaos of battle ensues. The closest wagon explodes and Sleep spells ring out into the enemy, dropping a large number of the hobgoblins. Unfortunately Kendall runs toward the back half of the caravan, leaving the group that is tasked with taking out the beginning of the caravan under-manned. He does kill an Ogre so that is very helpful.

Tensing her jaw, the priestess makes a decision. Stopping the front wagon will slow or stop all the rest to be dealt with more easily, otherwise they may keep going, forcing an unwelcome chase. Taking in the immediate area, Erisci sees only three of their number close enough to affect the front wagon. Lucyus is too far back and Ren is not quick enough. Hopefully they will cause enough damage on the few wagons ahead of the burning one, she thinks. Erisci calls out to Lucyus to catch his attention. She then points to herself and extends her hand toward the front of the caravan. Hopefully he will be able to work his way to the front at some point soon.

Moving over to Flare's side, the priestess says to him, "We need to stop the front wagon. Let's move to that large tree and shoot the lead ogres as best as you can. I will try to finish the hobgoblins atop the second wagon." (Half move to the large tree shown on the previous map due north of W2.) Passing Kaylessa, she entreats the elf to join them. "We're going to finish the task you started," the priestess says. "Come let us strike down those ogres pulling the lead wagon."

Reaching the large tree and staying behind Flare, so as not to interrupt his shot, she will cast a Magickal Missile spell at the hobgoblins 7 and 8 (one missile at each). Hopefully by giving covering fire to the two archers they can begin wounding the ogres to bring them to a halt.

Trying to keep the tree between himself and the hobgoblin firing arrows, Vernar nods his approval quickly to Butternut and her efficient spellcasting. Having two more daggers readily available, Vernar will hurl them at that hobgoblin (#25) while moving up to the wagon (#8), careful to stay out of melee range of the harnessed ogres. He will dart under the wagon if need be, but he hopes to put down the archer with his daggers, then use his enchanted sword against the slumbering hobgoblin (#26) and eventually retrieve his thrown weapons. Hopefully, the only thing the harnessed ogres can do at this point is rage and flail about until we can finish them off.

Butternut:

Advancing through the woods with Vernar watching her back, Butternut is puzzled by the lack of reinforcements with this wagon train. 'Perhaps Flare misunderstood his friend,' she muses.

Finding a good spot, the halfling elementalist pulls a pinch of dust from one of the pockets sown into her tunic and sprinkles it into her left hand. She murmurs a few words over the dust, shapes her left fist into a tube, and blows. Glittering sparkles float unerringly through the air to her target and settle of the rear two wagons. Five of the hobgobs collapse into deep sleep. Smiling at her spell's efficacy, she glances over at Vernar and sees her friend nod in approval. One of the remaining gobbos goes down as a result of arrows fired from somewhere off to her left, and Vernar kills another with thrown weapons.

Butternut continues to advance on the last wagon. Moving quietly, she comes up behind the nearer of the two ogres, hoping it doesn't notice her. Putting her small size to good advantage, she slips under the yoke connecting the beast to the wagon and attempts to hamstring it with sword and dagger.

Erisciana wrote:"Indeed it was!" She responds enthusiastically. "It was inspiring and amazing, but peaceful at the same time. Very difficult emotion to properly describe."
Listening to the priestess, Vardra purses his lips as he contemplates her story. "I can understand why..." Having little more to say on the matter, he lets his words trail off.

===

Soon the attack starts in earnest. Fire billows around the middle wagon of the caravan, followed by screams and roars as those manning it die in the flames. Yelling loudly, Kendall races in and slays the ogre pulling the next wagon back; the commotion draws the attention of many of the hobgoblins and ogres. Within moments, nearly all of the hobgoblins on the rear wagons are dead -- only two appear to survive the first attack and it looks like Vernar is going after one of them.

Vardra points to the other remaining hobgoblin. "Sorvani, can you take that one down? If you can, I'll go after the ogres to block the other wagons." Pausing just a moment for the warrior-mage's response, Vardra jogs forward and readies his attack.

If Sorvani is unwilling or doesn't seem confident in his ability to kill HG18, then Vardra will shoot at the hobgoblin. Otherwise, he'll draw his bastard sword and shield and charge Ogre 12.

Kaylessa

Kaylessa casts sleep at the very first wagon. She can see the archers on top drop to the deck, but cannot see the drivers from her position. This wagon continues to advance forward.
Kaylessa let’s a grin cross her face as she sees a few of the creatures on her wagon she targeted drop from sight. She watches for a moment when the wagon does not increase it’s speed. It must have worked she surmises.
The enemy tries to gather its wits and fight back. Hobgoblins #7 and 8 pop back up after both being shot by Flare and fire arrows at Kaylessa, hitting the elf.
Kaylessa eyes go wide as she sees the hobgoblins aim their bows at her. She tries to retract behind the tree but either she is to slow or she should have found a thicker tree as two arrows cut through her flesh. The sharp pain and warm trickle of blood cause her to curse in elfish as she knocks an arrow to her bow.
Closing her eyes for a moment, She takes a deep breath as she opens them she sees and hears Erisciana, Passing Kaylessa, she entreats the elf to join them. "We're going to finish the task you started," the priestess says. "Come let us strike down those ogres pulling the lead wagon."
“Their aim isn’t bad and their arrows sharp!” she calls back to the priestess. “But they will find my aim better and my Missiles drive deeper!” she almost growls as she grips both bow and knock arrow with one hand as she begins to chant the words to her magic missile spell. She will target Hobgoblin 7 & 8 one missile each.

Lucyus
Moving forward, Lucyus sees Ren light the alchemist’s fire turn and throw the deadly projectile in the air. Readjusting his grip on his spear he watches as the wagon erupts in flames, the drivers lost from sight in a fiery scream, The Ogre yet still lives as the fire consumes it as it franticly tries to put itself out screaming as it does. Taking the spear he aim as looses his spear. It finds a home and silences the orges screams as it falls into flames. “None should die such a death.” He comments more to himself then to anyone.

Brining his shield before him and drawing his battle axe. His voiced muffled slightly by his helm. “Nice throw, Ren. Stay behind me if you wish to.” He says as he hears Erisciana over the roar of the flames. As he chances a look, Lucyus sees her motion to the front wagons. Knowing full well he will have to fight his way forward. He raises his axe in a salute of understanding.

Lucyus will run to Orge 7 and attack it with both Battleaxe and shield in Hand.

April 16th, CR 569

The squads attack on the caravan heading towards the goblin lair continues.

After casting her Sleep spell, Butternut switches to her sword and dagger and glides forth underneath wagon #9 and up behind ogre #14. Her dagger neatly cuts the tendons behind the ogres left knee while the sword is wide of the mark. The ogre cries out in a combination of surprise and pain. He tries to find the source of the attack, but is not able to. However, the ogre next to him is not so limited. That ogre takes a clumsy backhand swing at Butternut, knocking the halfling off of her feet.

Vernar comes out from behind the tree and advances on wagon #8. The dwarf tosses two daggers at the hobgoblin archer on the roof top, but both miss. The archer fires back and one arrow grazes Vernar.

Vardra switches to his sword and shield and charges ogre #12. Two hits puts the ogre down. The other ogre, #13, takes a swing at Vardra but only slaps air.

Having downed ogre #9, Kendell continues down the caravan and attacks ogre #10 wounding him. Both ogres try to smash Kendell, but they miss the armored warrior. Gerett trails behind Kendell and finishes ogre #10 off with his halberd.

Sorvani switches to his short bow and moves into position to fire upon hobgoblin #18. Two arrows are fired and neither one hits the target. Sann takes out hobgoblin #18 with his battle axe.

Lucyus switches to his axe and shield and dashes towards ogre #7. His axe bites deep into the ogre's side, but is not enough to put him down. The ogre misses with a retaliatory strike.

Ren silently follows after Lucyus and then darts underneath wagon #4. Emerging on the other side, Ren moves forward and goes underneath wagon #3. Daggers in hand, it's clear to any who can see him that Ren intends to backstab one of the ogres.

Kaylessa casts Magic Missile back at the archers that fired out her. One missile impacts on each archer and they both drop from the attack.

Flare and Erisciana move forwards. Flare gets a better line of fire towards the ogre pulling the very first wagon. Two shafts are fire and both embed themselves in the unsuspecting ogre's back. The attack is not enough to put the ogre down, so Erisciana adds her own Magic Missile and the beast drops.

The first wagon comes to a sudden halt as the ogre falls to the ground. Many other ogres are looking around in confusion, but all are still attached to their wagons. However, movement is spotted by wagon #2. The two drivers, HG #5 & 6, were unaffected by the Sleep spells. The attack on the first wagon got their attention. Now they are dropping to the ground and are attempting to free their ogres, #3 & 4!

Butternut:

The ogre never sees her coming. Slipping in behind the beast, Butternut's dagger slices through its left hamstring just behind the knee. Pain causes it to roar and thrash in its harness, resulting in her short sword missing the other hamstring. A rough backhand serves as a painful reminder of the presence of another ogre in the other harness.

Picking herself up, a grin spreads across her face. 'You're next, fat boy,' she thinks to herself.

Edging to her left as she tries to get out of the other's reach, Butternut continues to use the nearer ogre's bulk to protect her from the archer on the leading wagon. 'Kidneys this time,' she thinks as she drives both weapons forward at the ogre's waist level.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

Sorvani nods his confirmation and Vardra charges in, swapping weapons as he goes. The nearest ogre is still struggling with its harness when he drives his sword deep into the beast's abdomen. Blocking a weakly flailing arm with his shield, he brings the blade down into the ogre's left shoulder. He hears the collarbone snap as the sword continues down into the chest cavity. The ogre emits a pitiful whimper as the life leaves its body and collapses to the ground.

Another ogre inhabits the neighboring harness, but is unable to reach the soldier. Letting the beast frustrate and exhaust itself, Vardra pauses for just a moment, then steps forward and launches a brutal attack in the hopes of ending this fight as quickly as the last. He can hear the sounds of battle all around, but has no way of knowing how it is going beyond his immediate vicinity due to the wagons blocking his vision. Kendall has downed another ogre off to his left and he can see several dead and sleeping hobgoblins. He will just have to trust that the others are having similar success against their opponents.

Vernar comes out from behind the tree and advances on wagon #8. The dwarf tosses two daggers at the hobgoblin archer on the roof top, but both miss. The archer fires back and one arrow grazes Vernar.
Vernar's aim is off just enough that neither dagger finds its mark. He feels the sting as an arrow tears into his broad chest, but it sails by instead of imbedding itself deeply - deflected slightly by the metal rivets in his armor.

"It be takin' more than a sting t' be bringin' me down," he mutters to no one in particular.

Stuck a bit out in the open, Vernar rushes forward to get up against, or under, the wagon (#8).

"Need t' be gettin' me more axes," he says aloud, making a mental list.

Drawing his enchanted blade, Vernar looks for an easy way up the wagon to take out the active archer (#25). He cannot let the hobgoblin lose interest in him and start firing on his companions.

Seeing them try to free their ogres Kaylessa will cast her last Magic missile between the two Hobgoblins.

The caravan strike continues!

Sorvani drops his bow declaring that he sucks at archery. Seeing one hobgoblin shooting arrows at Vernar, he casts Magic Missile and the twin missiles drop hobgoblin #25.

Erisciana and the Kaylessa both go into spell casting and get their spells off at nearly the same time. Hobgoblins # 5 & 6 stiffen up and then are struck by a Magic Missile. They remain unmoved and upright.

Butternut picks herself up from under the last wagon and circles around to her left, putting the wounded ogre between her and the one that struck her. The halfling stabs the ogre with her sword and dagger and this time it dies!

Flare targets ogre #3 with arrows and deeply embeds two shafts into the hulking brute causing him to scream.

Vardra moves to the next ogre and slices him with his bastard sword. The ogre drops before it can even defend itself.

Gerett tries to stab ogre #11 with his halberd but it gets pushed aside. Kendell take that ogre out with a massive sword strike it is belly.

With the hobgoblin shooting at him dealt with, Vernar moves under wagon #8 and homes in on the ogre next to the one Butternut just slew. His shortsword and dagger bite deep into the ogre, but it manages to life. A clumsy counter attack is missed.

A bit further away, Lucyus slays the ogre he was fighting, ogre #7.

Ren drives his daggers into the back of ogre #6, badly wounding it. Sann rushes up and using his axe takes out the ogre in question.

Laurel and Wimzy maintain their watch from a safe distance.

Butternut:

The wounded ogre seems to have difficulty tracking the small assailant as she circles and comes in on his left flank. The severed hamstring makes it impossible for the ogre to stand up fully and so it has adopted a crouched position. Determination etched on her features, Butternut steps in close, driving her short sword high into her victim's left kidney. Instants later, her dagger finds a temporary home in the ogre's groin. The oversize brute grunts heavily, then slumps and crashes to the ground at her feet; she watches as the last flickers of life fade from its eyes.

Looking up, Butternut looks on as Vernar steps up and carves into the ogre that had backhanded her a moment ago. The brutish humanoid roars in pain but doesn't fall. It flails weakly at the dwarf and fails to connect.

Seeing that Vernar has the remaining ogre well in hand, she flashes him a thumb-up sign, then clambers up the wagon to her right [#9] to finish off the sleeping hobgoblins.

Vardra Marcus, PFC:

The first ogre slain, the other ogre hitched to the wagon struggles in its harness as it attempts to get free. Vardra hears one of the straps snap from the brute's great strength and realizes that it could get loose if given enough time. "Can't have that," he murmurs under his breath.

Stepping over the dead ogre, Vardra approaches the struggling live one. Raising his bastard sword high, he brings it crashing down into the top of the ogre's head. The humanoid dies instantly, collapsing with hardly a sound.

Stepping past the wagon to the edge of the road, Vardra pauses to look around for a second. To his right, he sees that Vernar has gravely wounded one of the ogres pulling the last wagon, and Butternut climbing up to finish off the hobgoblins. To his left, his vision is mostly blocked by the trees and underbrush, but he can make out at least one ogre struggling to get free near the front of the caravan. Most of the sounds of combat he hears are from the front half of the wagon train as well.

Turning to his left, Vardra starts making his way up the caravan along the edge of the woods looking for any of the enemy to engage. The ogres are the bigger threat, though he won't hesitate to attack any hobgoblins that are still active.

Skirting along the edge of the ogre's reach, it does not land a blow on him after his blades bite deep.

"A bit slow I see," Vernar mocks but does not take his opponent for granted. A wrong misstep and Vernar could be knocked down, out or worse.

Holding the line in melee with his halberd, Gerett pressed the attack. It would be important to cripple these central wagons to prevent the rear from advancing. Hopefully the spellcasters had a trick to deal with the front of the caravan. He put his focus on the Ogres, trying to bring them down before they could begin tearing through the party.

Lucyus

Bring his axe across and down he strikes the Ogre before him. He watches as the light in the Ogre’s eyes dim then go out as it falls to the ground, it’s lifes blood spilling from the body.

Knowing that Erisciana is moving the team up the front of the caravan, Lucyus proceeds to the next wagon #3 from the left side. As he comes around the Wagon he sees an Ogre and he will engage it with Axe and shield.

Kaylessa

Kaylessa watches as her spell streaks toward their target and connects just as the go rigid and do not move. “That spell doesn’t do that!”

She knocks her bow and arrow, She will aim at Ogre 3
