Recap:

Avengers #1 - "The Older Order Changeth"

The prologue begins with a discussion between Captain Valor and Sargon. Sargon basically got bonked on the head by a fist-sized diamond that fell out of the sky. Valor thinks this to be nutty. A few moments later, they spot a young woman in an adjacent room in a yellow and orange costume.

Meanwhile, Hunter is approaching the Avengers Mansion via the rooftops. He spots a young woman burning her way out of the back of the Mansion. Hunter moves closer to investigate and the Mansion blows up in his face. End of Prologue.

In the compound of the West Coast Avengers, the team is trying to decide what to watch on TV. Wonder Man and Vision want Cosby, while Ms. Marvel, Wasp, and the Scarlet Witch want to watch Magnum. Black Widow interupts this when an emergency call from Washington comes in. Before Ms. M can answer the call, a special bulletin comes across the TV. Reporter Allen Kingston tells the viewers about the explosion and that 4 of the 5 Avengers present were killed. Sargon, Captain Valor, Crusader, & Wildcat are believed to be dead, while Hunter was gravely injured. Vengeance is sworn.

One week later, a formal burial is held at Arlington National Cemetary. While there, Ms. M speaks with Spinnerette, Morning Star, and Nightingale (originally spelled Nightengale). The conversation gets around to what is going to happen to the East Coast team now. Marv explains that she's returning to the East Coast. Flare will be returing as well. The team will be using an old military training complex out on King's Point until a new base can be built.

Marv asks if Spin & MStar know of any other heroes who may like to join. Spin declines as she is a member of the Guardians. Morning Star also declines as she just joined X-Factor. MStar also introduces Spectrum and Icicle to Ms. Marvel. While at the cemetary, Marv runs into the Thing who agrees to rejoin the team.

A few days later, Muskateer is recruited in Chicago after a short battle with the Buffalo. Two days after that, Marv recruits Sunturian while in St. Louis after conferring with her stepmother.

The next afternoon in her civilian ID of Linda Danvers, Ms. M approaches an attractive blonde haired woman while on the campus of Princeton University. Gwendolyne Kingston recognizes Ms. M as an old acquaintance. The two talk and Linda tries to talk Gwen into joining the team.

Gwen is shown photos of the other members and stops when she sees Muskateer's picture. She has the pecular feeling that she's met him before, but knows that she hasn't. Gwen accepts the offer, saying that college has become a bore.

Two days later, Sunturian is moving into her cabin on the Avengers temporary King's Point base. Flare offers to help her unpack. He notices her box of romance novels, makes a stupid comment and is sent packing by Sunturian.

Avengers #1 Continued

A cab pulls up outside the temporary base dropping off Muskateer. He is greeted by Ms. Marvel and the two talk. In the background, the Thing is unloading his personal Pizza Oven and asks Ms. M where it can be put. She suggests the kitchen.

Flare walks past, mumbling to himself after his encounter with Sunturian. Muskateer notes that "I know I'm not going to like that guy already."

Continuing on with the tour, the pair arrive at Gwen's cabin. The Enchantress, wearing her blue costume, is unpacking. Items fly under their own power throughout the cabin. Gwen finds our sword swinger interesting, while Muksateer notes that she has nice legs.

Muskateer asks if Gwen went to a special store to buy stuff that puts itself away. She claims that its a talent. Muskateer asks if she means like swallowing gold fish. Gwen says hardly.

Later, the team has a group get together to get to know each other better. The Thing has made pizza for the occassion. He also calls Sunturian 'Small Fry' and Muskateer 'Junior'. Muskateer asks not to be called Junior. The Thing responds with, "Sure thing, Junior."

There is an instant attraction between Sunturian and Muskateer and both get rather silly during the pizza eating. Flare is bored by the whole thing. The Enchantress complains when the Thing brings out a pitcher of beer. "Beer? How droll."

Flare suggests to the Enchantress, ""I agree completely, my dear. Perhaps we should retire to my quarters and sample something a little finer?"

The Enchantress reply is, "Not on your life." Flare cuts out shortly after that. Gwen is also annoyed a bit at Sunturian who is seemingly throwing herself at Muskateer. Muskateer in turn concludes that Gwen is stuck up.

The Thing wonders why the Enchantress isn't eating. What's a matter, sister? Donja like pizza?"

"Yes... I was merely waiting for the silverware to be brought out."

"Oh, is we too dainty ta eat with our mitts?"

"It is rather primitive." Ms. M goes to get some silverware and a wine cooler for our heroine. "At last, someone with a semblance of taste. It shall do in a pinch."

"Strange how someone so dignified runs around in a costume like
that," Muskateer notes.

"At least I don't have to hide my face," the Enchantres fires back.

Next day, Muskateer is working out in the weight room when an emergency call comes in. The team converges on the Quinnjet Hanger and are off to answer the emergency.

Avengers #1 Still Continued

Post by Spectrum »

While enroute to their destination, Ms. Marvel explains the nature of the emergency. A group of four villains were spotted outside the Simon Labs Warehouse. Sparkler was one of the villains.

As the team arrives, the flyers depart out the hatch while the Thing lands the jet.

Inside the warehouse, Power Crusher threatens Thunderbolt. Darkon comes up telling them that Sparkler has gotten the safe open, ending the argument. Next the villains hear the Quinnjet arriving.

Flare streaks in ahead, ignoring Ms. Marvel's orders and is promtply blown back out of the warehouse through the roof courtesy of Thunderbolt. The Enchantress is ordered to catch Flare before he hits the ground.

"I don't know why I'm saving this fool. He deserves to fall on his head. Oh well....", the Enchantress grumbles.

Ms. Marvel flies in and bops Sparkler on the top of the head, stunning her. Then she runs into Darkon and then is ambushed by Power Crusher.

Elsewhere, Sunturian and Thunderbolt trade attacks with Sun getting the worst. She's blasted out of the warehouse and sails over Muskateer and the Thing as they are approaching. Muskateer vows to trash Thunderbolt.

Power Crusher and the Thing go at it. Flare and the Enchantress return and together they take out Sparkler. Muskateer whacks Power Crusher during his chase of Thunderbolt. Flare joins in and blinds PC. The Enchantress casts a spell to drain away Power Crusher's stolen energy and the Things clobbers him.

Elsewhere, Muskateer closes in on Thunderbolt, but Flare beats him to the punch. When Flare's attack proves ineffective, Muskateer strikes Thunderbolt with his sword and an explosion follows. When the smoke clears, Tbolt is down and in bad shape. "I think you overdid it," Flare observes.

After the villains have been carted away, the team is flying back home when they recieve another emergency call. Mechassassin has been spotted by the hospital where Hunter is recovering. The team goes to intercept.

I almost don't know where to begin when it comes to this file. There's just so much stuff to talk about!

If this file seems huge to you, then you're not imagining things. It is huge. It's very nearly the size of a regular issue of the Avengers while still in our modified script format.

Not only that, but this is also a rewrite from the original Avengers #1. Much of our very early stuff was done by hand or by other methods before either of us had a C64 computer. After we had computers, the earlier files were converted to the new format. When it came time to re-do Avengers #1, it was a major upgrade.

The original file was handwritten and was also written in the style of a comic book script. There was a breakdown of each panel, narration, and dialogue. The idea was for Muskateer to draw the issue, but that never happened. This was probably where our modified script writing style actually started.

The original #1, which no longer exists, pretty much picked up with the members arriving at the Kings' Point base and proceeds from there. The stuff before it was all added in the rewrite.

The stuff in the prologue was added to compliment material Muskateer added in a story in a future issue of the Defenders. This ended up being a very important element of the early stuff on the website.

No reason why Muskateer or Sunturian were picked was given in the files. So, a reason for them to be asked had to be come up with. With Muskateer it was his possible ties with Iron Maiden, and for Sunturian, her unexplained appearance at the Mansion on the night when everyone died.

Naturally, Sunturian changed her name to Firestar a bit later on. Likewise, Flare was renamed Lightburst. Nightingale was not a member right away, so there were only 6 members at first. Also, Esper was not part of the villains at the warehouse originally. She was added to help balance out 'Gale's presence.

The Enchantress started out as a blonde wearing the blue costume. She was much more arrogant at first, but later changed into the Gwen that you're more familiar with. Much like the Sunturian/Firestar name change, we just dropped that part and went straight into the characters we were more familiar with.

There's a great many similarities between this file and what was posted on the website. Much of the dialogue was lifted and jazzed up for the new version. The events in old Avengers #1 ended up covering new Avengers #0-3, with a great deal of new material added in between. Naturally, some stuff was changed or deleted too.

The Avengers, much like X-Factor went thru a phase of having numerous bases. I decided against all of that right from the start and had them back in the Avengers Mansion.

As noted in the Bizzare Adventures/X-Factor threads, the stuff with Spectrum and X-Factor came first. It was at least a year in before Muskateer saw the light of day. At first we decided to run our games in completely seperate worlds.

The Avengers was probably my first serious running of a Champions Campaign. I had run a bunch of stuff for D&D, but not for Champions. I can't honestly recall if I even ran anything during our pre-campaign games or not.

So, when I started out, Muskateer owned everything there was for Champions. The first Champions books I owned was Champions III and Enemies III. If any of you wondered why I used so many E3 villains in the early stuff, it was because they were only ones I had!

I did make a bunch of forgetable villains, most of which never saw the light of day in the new stuff. About the only one of any importance from this group was Iron Maiden. It was bad enough to not have many villains to use, but then there was NPC heroes to create as well. That's why there were so many comic book based characters used at first.

Later on when our campaigns became merged, a great many of these characters were simply dropped. Likewise, when it came time to do the website, just about all of the rest of them were dropped. The West Coast Avengers were dropped and were essentially merged with the Guardians. Marv became Black Diamond, while Wonder Man was Supreme. Scarlet Witch & Vision became Density and Warlock, while Spin replaced Black Widow. Some of the lesser used Guardians were dropped in the process as well.

The big rock that hit Sargon on the head was indeed the Crystal. Unlike the website, it was already complete when it arrived on Earth. The Crystal was another mystery that didn't have an answer in the old stuff. It was there, but I had no idea who created it or why it was here. Lady Darkness didn't exist in the old stuff, and was later used as the target for the Crystal. Eventually the stuff with the Crystal was played out and it was shattered, covering Night Girl in the process. But that's a story for a later file.

Lady Darkness and Lord Evil originated in my Q-Link stuff as part of an origin for a PC called Magebane. Both were simple Morbanes in those days and other than the way they looked, completely unlike the versions on the site. Anyway, Lady Darkness scarred Magebane's face to gain power as a Morbane. As you might have guessed by his name, Magebane didn't take too kindly to this. In fact, he didn't get along too well with his fellow LA Knight the Enchantress because of this.

Oh, and that Enchantress while possessing the same powers as Gwen, was nothing like her at all. In fact, her name was Shiela Grace! She was more like a biker chick with her boyfriend/hubby Nightstalker and wore a different costume.

One last interesting tidbit about Magebane. He kept his face covered because it was frightening to behold. However, the only one who wasn't repulsed by it was Sapphire. (Basically the same Sapphire you're familiar with.) Because of this, the two became close. Magebane took it upon himself to teach Saph about dating and Earthly mating rituals, breaking numerous ribs from the later. He also had Saph dressing up in leather outfits as well.

That's about all I can think of about Avengers #1 at the moment. I'm sure Muskateer will have some very different insights to all of this!

The Avengers was much different in the first presentation than what you see now!

I had forgotten about the comic book description form originally done. That was an interesting memory that had been purged. We had attempted to draw a D&D adventure as a comic, but never got very far with it. I remember a few pages is all. This one never really got off the ground since we were not co-located in the same city at the time, like we were with the D&D one.

The first re-do we did on the files was a definite improvement, but still not up to our current standards. I shudder to think we could do this again in 15 more years!!

Wildcat was obviously re-done as Black Tiger. Originally his daughter appeared later in the Defenders, also known as Wildcat, but she has likely been written out of the future. Many of the appearances didn't cross over between the West Coast in the first writing since we weren't using the same world, but that's already been mentioned before.

I remember that Muskateer and Firestar got along very well and there was the beginnings of a relationship between the newbies right from the beginning. Gwen? She was a terrible stuck-up snob. Couldn't stand her at this point really, although she was attractive. She really came across as thinking herself so much better than other people. It would take a couple serious actions and changes for the situation to alter.

Firestar and Muskateer sort of moved apart when the Avengers fell apart and had too many crises at one time. She ended up with Marv's group and nothing much developed beyond that point. In the new writing, they had more of a friendship, but the connection between the two remained.

The situation with Gwen was much more drastic in the re-write. Specs decided that the change that Gwen went through was really too drastic to happen so quickly. And since we had so much more history with her acting like she does now, it made sense to just eliminate the haughty, snobby witch (with a B) attitude. It wasn't terrible as it happened before, but this version is much, much more realistic. Gwen is a great character and now she always has been.

Flare was a pain even then. He was overconfident and stupid. He has been intensified a little in the new stories and appropriately, no one seems to like him. What did Marv/Black D ever see in that twit?! :?: :?:

Muskateer was created just like a newbie hero and I didn't have any ambitions to have him lead the Avengers, EVER. I played him like a part of the team and a fun-loving character. As things developed however, it was inevitable that he would move towards a leadership role. We just made it much more soon in the new stuff. We were probably just used to it by then. A lot of changes into this version came about in that way.

I think I got the first idea that Muskateer was an admirable fighter and could really hold his own when they ran into Dark Seraph (which hasn't been gotten to yet in this recap). With the Thing and Marv around, Musky only had to be a good fill-in. This really changed as I learned how to utilize the character and hence he is a better combatant in the new stories right from the beginning. Experience, I guess.

I believe Lightburst was always named Flare in the old stuff and we changed the name for this version only. I recall the later Flare from the Defenders was known as Flare 2. Sunturion was changed to Firestar during the old version however.

Actually, we didn't really drop the blonde Gwen with the light blue costume. We just said that look was from her earlier Crusader days. Originally she relied on magical gadgets for some of her powers. We eliminated that in the changeover.

As Specs had EIII and used mostly villains from that, most of the villains I used were from the first 2 Enemies books!

The Crystal would play a big role in the original stories as well, but it changed with the new ideas. Everything we are doing now is building off our old good ideas, adding new good ideas, fixing old bad ideas and throwing out the old really bad stuff!

The Avengers went though some very chaotic periods at the beginning. Similar to X-Factor, people came and went, bases were destroyed, people changed main characters. It just didn't happen at the same time. I really think the newest versions of our world have some great stories, great characters and great ideas. Hope you guys enjoy all this even a fraction of how much we did making it! :D

Here's some comments to Muskateer's comments.

We always seemed to have the idea of actually making our own comic, be in D&D or Champions. Never did pan out. Although, Muskateer did write a mini-novel covering the opening adventure for his Victor 2 character. By hand yet!

If you think I've going to write Avengers #1 for a 4th time, you've got another thing coming! (Not for free, at any rate! )

There was indeed a female Wildcat, but I don't believe she was related to the original in any way. In fact, that Wildcat was a hot little hispanic number with an equally hot temper. Imagine Spin with more attitude and claws. She was adapted from a DC character as well. THey had a female Wildcat before the Crisis ruined a great many things. (Like the original version of the Huntress! Those dogs!) All in all, Wildcat will probably not appear in the new stuff. Too many female felines.

I should note that Sunturian changed her name and Gwen changed her personality very early in the game, around Avengers #6 or 7, so its not like either one was that different for that long. Of course that could have been a year or more in real time!

What does/did Marv/Di see in Flare/Lightburst? She's simply one of those women who is attracted to the wrong kind of guy. It happens in real life all the time. (What does she see in him?!) We'll have to see of Eclypse is her final man or not.

Muskateer is good in combat. Sometimes too good! It became a royal pain in the butt to deal with his combat prowess at times. Used to annoy me to know end until I stopped taking it so personally when a plotline got ruined by him not losing! By now, I know how to deal with him much better.

Lightburst was indeed always Flare in the Old Stuff. I'm not sure where the name Lightburst even came from. Might have been Q-Link. There was a Flare 2, who was based on the Champions Comic Book character, but was a man instead of a woman. (Remember those comics anyone? )

The new Flare certainly made Marv do a double take when he debuted! The orginal Flare departed our game a few years earlier in Avengers #21 or 22. What happened to him? Well, he was liquidated. (And yes, that IS a pun!)

Ironically, for a short time the blond and blue outfit Enchantress served as the appearance for the Sorceress! That got changed around and Tanya got her own unique look.

The opening scenario for the Avengers was how the Qlink Crusaders game started as well. The team was tragically killed and in the Crusaders case a whole new team was formed. Ironically, two of those new recruits were Firestar and Imperial! This Firestar was also completely different person and was repeated voted Team Leader through out the Cruasders 220+ posts run. Crusaders is where Imperial originated as well.

That's all for now.

Whoa! Looks like somebody got a little carried away here. All this in less than 24 hours! Yikes! I'm thinkin' somebody's got a lot of time on their hands. :P Ahh... to be single and childless again...

Lots of juicy goodness here. This 'script' format does allow a lot to be compressed into a small space, but of course doesn't carry the weight of detail that the fully written stories do.

The Magebane character sounds kind of cool. Any chance of him appearing or learning more about him?

I've got some time on my hands, and yes being single does have some advantages when it comes to free time. :D

Yes, the modified scripts do cover a lot of ground, but also leave some stuff out. Back in those days, Muskateer & I were pretty much on the same wave length, so it was easier to understand what the other was doing. So the old files were also part shorthand as well. But, as you noted they do tend to be rather lacking as far as emotional responses and indepth details. They started out personal responses written specifically for one person, not a wide audience.

Magebane was one of the characters I liked. I was friends with his player back on QLink and we were both compensated GM's as well. (I was GM Mad & he was GM Kill.) He ran a character in Crusaders called Timeshift, who was rather unique. I just had to made sure I remembered to include the 'F' in his name at all times!

I've had some contact with him in the post Qlink days, but that was years ago. He didn't mind me using Timeshift for the site should I so desire, so I imagine he wouldn't mind when it came to Magebane. I still have every character sheet from the Q days, so I have his write up.

There's a few details that I skimped over in Magebane's backstory. You see, his old girlfriend was the woman who became Lady Darkness. (Her and Lord Evil were not married, they simply co-ran the LA DEMON Base.) She was offered power by DEMON and had to prove her worth by scarring her someone she cared about. With the way his face was, Magebane had a strong Phantom of the Opera sense about him. Intense and brooding. Althought, none of that bothered Saph as she was used to seeing all sorts of aliens, so someone who was disfigured didn't faze her at all.

Perhaps he'll show up someday.

Random comments:
I may be wrong, but I seem to recall a different original name for Sargon that also began with a S. Not sure about the details on when it was changed. Probably for the firs re-write before the official site.

Imperial did come from Q-Link and was one of my twisted ideas to dupe the group using an existing person (Specs) playing in the game to be a predetermined mole. He was designed to be working for Viper I believe and get the team's confidence, which was pretty easy. I always thought it was strange that everyone trusted everyone else who just showed up and no one knew anything about. This was to prove that is a mistake.

That mini novel for Victor was tough and very difficult to edit, so you have to write it first in your head. Thank God for word processors!

Yet again, still more random comments:

I think the name Musky is searching for is "Salizar". I don't recall much else apart from that at the moment.

Impy was fun on Q. He was deliberately a thorn in the teams side. Later on, he formed his own villain team out of former Crusaders. (Basically characters that started out as PC's and then became NPC's when their players vanished. A regular happening on Q.) I forget what that team was called, but they battled the Crusaders at least once a year.

I've read the Vic mini novel several times in the last decade or so. Good stuff. Just have to figure out how to get it onto a PC. The main problem that it was written in pencil...
